-Born and raised in Kuching, Sarawak -Graduated from an all girls school; St Mary’s Secondary School -Completed Foundation in Natural & Built Environment in Taylor’s University -Graduated from Taylor’s University with Bachelors of Science Honours (Architecture) “Eruption of buildings are unnecessary when there are many to preserve and beautify”
Erna Syafina is currently in her first year of working as an architect in a local architecture firm in Kuching, Sarawak. She is very passionate about preserving old heritage architecture as well as taking part in projects that will contribute to the community. She believes t that architecture is the medium that connects human beings and built forms; how four walls forms a space that then becomes a significant place. How important the roles of the materials chosen to enhance the poetic sense of the built form. How the past affects the present which indirectly influence the future. That the future lies in our past. How everything is interrelated and that architecture is a long journey of constantly learning something new everyday.
The building derived by maximising the potential of the site. The idea of the building is to bring the nature into the building. The view is obtained by having a different level as well as the look out point on the top floor. The roof of each floors has a dual function. It acts as a floor to the upper level. Rainwater harvesting system is applied by harvesting rainwater through a bamboo roof designed simulating a funnel. The issues of the site of not having a water supply is solved by having the system applied.Raw materials are used in constructing this building such as gabion walls using recycled construction concrete. The gabion walls allow a tinge of sunlight into the building creating a poetic affect. As the site is home to bamboo trees, bamboo are used as the railings as well as the floor deck of the courtyard.
The buidling design is designed in a way that it has an industrialised concept. The bicycle center has ramps made out of concrete that lead cyclist to the top floor. This acts as a continuation of the tar road going into the building. Steel is chosen as the material as it acts both for aesthetics and structural purposes. The steel facade is arrange in a chaotic manner that also acts as a small parking for bicycles in the building. Through this, the building indirectly showcases different types of bicycles by different user. The arrangement of steel frames results in the play of light in the building. The top floor is orientation overlooking the Kl tower. The scale and proportion becomes one of the aspect of the building design, tall steel columns are used to support the structure as well as to give a sense of majestic to the building.
The main focus on the building design is for the edifice to act as a sanctuary, a refuge that captures the splendid view of the beach, park, and forest. This leisure center highlights the lanscape and gives a sense of continuity into the building. The three storey building contains leisure activities such as swimming area and gym area even a spa center. The main highlight of the building is the internal stimuli that happens inside the building itself. Capturing the genius loci of the site. The external of the building is dense whilst the internal is soft and zen like. The design response to the surroundings as well as the site analysis such as the way the building is orientated as well as the opening of the building that provides cross ventilation.
