RESEARCH REPORT Melanie Hayes

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT

AGED CARE Margie Steffens

Tabitha Acret IN 2010, THE DHAA introduced the Dental Hygiene Research Fund (DHRF) available for any members working in research projects. The objective of the research fund is for the provision of better dentistry, support for leadership and professional development for dental hygienists within the dental profession. It is a great opportunity for members to enhance their careers, increase their personal and professional networks and add value to the profession in another way that may not have been possible. The grant, up to the value of $3000, is paid to any one winner for a one year period. There may be multiple winners if entries are judged worthwhile. Other monies may be received from other sources for the research in the application and further funding for continuation of the same research will require another application. An advisory panel will assess each application based on the set criteria and will advise the Research Committee Chair of their preferred recipient or recipients. I would like to sincerely thank Associate Professor Jane Taylor and Carol Tran for their contributions this year. Unfortunately the grant was not awarded this financial year. We had eight successful poster presentations for the National Symposium in Hobart, which was a great representation of the exciting work our profession is doing in the research space. Judged by a panel of three reviewers, for quality of content and presentation, the award for best poster was presented to Linda Wallace from the University of Newcastle. We will again have posters at the symposium in Adelaide, so please take time to view the posters and chat to the researchers about their projects. Building a research culture within dental hygiene is critical for the development of professional respect and advancement. The DHAA continues to support researchers in their recruitment of study participants, with researchers from many Australian universities getting in contact so that hygienists and oral health therapists may be involved in their valuable research.

IN 2017, THE DHAA Ltd has been strengthening relationships with universities and has been able to visit more of the training schools for Dental Hygiene and BOH nationally. Visiting the universities has proved a success for both the DHAA and for the students involved. The presentations provided help raise awareness of the great member benefits, student support and community involvement that the DHAA is either involved with or pioneered. It also allows for student to ask valuable questions about entering the workforce and career development. Nationally, the DHAA has been instrumental in helping guide and mentor our future colleagues as they navigate their way through the transition from student to their chosen next step. The DHAA has also been supporting graduation events through either hosting or helping with the costs of graduate functions and providing a University prize at all universities and TAFEs and help celebrate the amazing milestone they have achieved. Our next step now is to take the growing number of Student Members and have them convert in similar numbers to new graduate members.

THE DHAA is proud to be a member of the National Aged Care Alliance. Our future is looking bright, with both Rachel Bray and new recruit, Lynda van Adrighem, showing great dedication and enthusiasm in this very important area. Lynda’s arrival on the team will provide valuable representation for when either Rachel or I are unavailable. In fact she attended the last meeting in August, as I was away and Rachel is expecting her first baby very soon. As part of a university-driven project, in conjunction with Southern Cross Care, Lynda has been administering a case note audit and oral hygiene assessment. The plan being to establish a permanent role for a dental hygienist within the organisation. Hopefully by the end of 2017 we will have a clearer idea of dentists availability, student placements and an agreement with the Adelaide Dental School and Southern Cross Care (SCC). Dr Archana Pradhan is also very keen to run some workshops on Dementia training and will be attending IADR here in Adelaide with a view to implement a workshop at SCC. I think this would be a very important workshop that DHAA could consider at some point in the near future. Melanie Hayes and I attended a meeting at COTA head-office in Canberra with Sue McGrath, the National Policy Manager, to discuss support and strategies to enable better employment and workforce opportunities for dental hygienists within Supported Care Facilities. (SCF’s). We will keep the communication going with COTA and work toward national changes at a policy level. There has been a growing interest in our Aged Care committee lunch to be held during Symposium Adelaide.

he DHAA continues to support ‘‘ Tresearchers in their recruitment of study

participants, with researchers from many Australian universities getting in contact..’’ 21
