Monitoring the nation’s oral health The National Oral Health Plan is conducted every 10 years and 2016 is the year

M

arco Peres, Director of ARCPOH is pleased to announce that the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health (ARCPOH) will be conducting the 2016–2018 National Study of Adult Oral Health. A series of newsletters will be produced to provide updates on the study’s progress. The development of National Oral Health Surveys are core components of Oral Health Surveillance. The main aims of oral health surveillance is to assess population oral health outcomes and their determinants and to monitor them over time in order to inform policy makers, professional bodies and the public. For all of these reasons, it is highly recommended that national surveys

be conducted periodically. In fact, the National Oral Health Plan 2015–24 calls for an adult and child survey to be conducted every 10 years. ARCPOH, in partnership with the Commonwealth Department of Health and State/Territory Health Departments and Dental Services, will be coordinating the 2016–2018 National Study of Adult Oral Health (NSAOH 2016–18). This marks 10 years since the last national survey of adult oral health (NSAOH 2004–06) was conducted. Support has also been received from the Australian Dental Association and Colgate.

survey of a representative sample of people aged 15+ years across each State and Territory and will be comprised of two main components; a National Dental Telephone Interview Survey (NDTIS); and an oral epidemiological examinations among the dentate population interviewed. A two-stage, stratified, clustered random sampling design will be used to ensure a sufficient geographic distribution of participants from both urban and rural settings in all States and Territories. For the NDTIS component, approximately 14,000–15,000 people will be interviewed by telephone in order to gather information on socioeconomic conditions, dental

ADX 2016 – Success all round Danielle Gibbens reports on a successful event and new corporate relationships ADX 2016 WAS a massive three-day event with over 140 suppliers, the largest in Australia hosted by the Australian Dental Industry Association (ADIA) which DHAA was invited to attend. If you were at ADX 2016 in Sydney we hope you had the chance to pop on by to the DHAA stand and met some of the volunteers from NSW and some of the Executive committee including Vice President Kathryn Novak, aged care representative Margie Steffens and administrations officer Patricia Chan all there to answer questions, update/ recruit members and promote the DHAA and its upcoming events.

Our stand attracted some very positive attention

Those of us that attended had a great time, not only did we get to see what is the latest and greatest in oral health but we were able to network with dental companies, dentists and other interested parties to get the DHAA name out there along with what we stand for and are aiming to achieve. The team has come back with invaluable connections which we hope sees the association move forward into the future. Be sure to make it to Hobart Symposium as we welcome several first time dental suppliers met at ADX 2016 as they make their debut display at a DHAA event.

Mouthguard Awareness Month LAST YEAR, THE Australian Dental Association (ADA) launched a nationwide mouthguard awareness campaign to promote the importance of custom made mouthguards, after the 2015 Dental Health in Active Australians Survey revealed some jaw dropping statistics: ‘More than two thirds of active adults (68.8%) never wear a mouthguard when playing team sport’ and ‘only 6% of children aged 5-17 years wear a mouthguard during competition’. At a local community level, Northwest Dental, a family owned private practice based on the Northwest Coast of Tasmania, launched their inaugural Mouthguard

Awareness Month, as the sports season kicks-off. The number of sporting injuries presenting to our clinics in Burnie and Wynyard, highlights there is a need to promote the importance of wearing custom-fitted mouthguards within the community. Only last year a local hockey player sustained significant facial injuries when she was struck by a hockey stick. A team of dental

practitioners and dental assistants attended local sporting clubs and schools. We were also lucky enough to have former coaster and St Kilda Football player Maverick Weller as our sports ambassador during the campaign. Participating patients had the opportunity to win electric toothbrushes and subway vouchers,

Actively promoting awareness

but the biggest prize up for grabs was a club sponsorship; congratulations to the Burnie Dockers Football Club who referred the most patients to our practice for a custom made mouthguard. We would like to extend our appreciation to our local sponsors, ambassadors, schools, clubs, parents and players for their participation and support during Mouthguard Awareness Month at Northwest Dental. DHAA Naming As part of the ongoing re-structure of the DHAA we are considering the

T

he DHAA has recently completed a successful restructure from a federation of state-based entities, to a National Company Limited by Guarantee. As we continue to evolve the association needs to remain relevant to it’s members. Over the past decade, with the introduction of new education and training courses, the demographic of the membership has changed; we now have dental hygienist and oral health therapist members. Given this change in demographic, it would seem sensible to consider changing the name of the Association to be more reflective of the membership profile. We have started by liaising with Past National Presidents, National Life members, IFDH delegates, current Directors and State Chairs. These members have provided valuable insight into the key issues when considering a name change. Key points to consider include: nR etaining the focus on preventive oral health practice. n I nclusiveness of dental hygienists and oral health therapists. nO ur Association and its brand have a good reputation in the dental sector. nD ental hygiene is a globally recognised profession; oral health therapy is a term unique to Australia and few other nations. With these points in mind, our current suggestion is a small, but simple change to the Dental Hygiene Association of Australia Ltd. This small change would allow the Association to keep its reputable brand, remain relevant to the current membership and retain international recognition; we believe it would also be more inviting to Oral Health Therapists who do not identify with the title “Dental Hygienist, but do identify with preventive oral health and dental hygiene service provision as core to their profession. All members were recently invited to fill out a short survey regarding a proposed name change for the Association; we now share those results with you, which show strong support for the name change, as well as some valuable suggestions to be considered by the Board.

Convention adoption a new name to better reflect what we stand for

Q4: Would you support a name change for the Association?

I think it is the hygienist association, dual qualified operators are still a Dental Hygienist. Otherwise why have two separate Associations, may as well have only one for both.

Yes No

o, you have wisely considered a number of N different facets. The simple change is significant and relevant to all membership but the brand remains recognisable and no expensive logo changes. Well done.

2016 CONTINUES TO fly by at a whirlwind rate – which means that it is nearly the end of the current three-year CPD cycle. Hopefully your CPD records are scrupulously up-to-date, and you have attended many interesting CPD events that extend and deepen your knowledge and skills, within your chosen stream of dental practice. It’s always a good time to reflect that attaining CPD hours should not just be a matter of fulfilling the AHPRA registration requirements and doing the minimum set hours, but

“ It’s always a good time to reflect that attaining CPD hours should not just be a matter of fulfilling the AHPRA registration requirements” an ongoing experience of sharing and discussing case studies with your colleagues, by attending courses and reading articles, that give you the background to justify your treatment modalities and decisions. Who’s next in the AHPRA Audit line? The DHAA continue to try and bring our members the most relevant speakers and topics, and in choosing these we are particularly mindful of requests for CPD

that we have had over the years. There are still a few outstanding requests that we hope to fulfill over the next 12 months. We had a wonderful evening with Nikki from Nood Food, who gave an energetic and passionate talk on nutrition, as well as bringing us some of her delicious healthy snacks. Our half-day seminar is on the 28 May, with some of WA’s top specialists, covering TMJ, Xerostomia and MID. On Saturday 27 August we will bring you a practical radiography update spread over two sessions – morning or afternoon – to cater for those of you that work on a Saturday morning. We are also planning a special Christmas function this year so keep an eye out for a “save the date”! We are always looking for keen and interested people that would like to assist with local CPD events, and also participate in community oral health promotion. For further info please contact me at: dhaawa.president@ gmail.com You can keep up to date with all our events on the new DHAA website. Natasha Hunt Western Australia State Chair

South Australia

“ Part of our responsibility as an oral health care provider is to know what these medications are and any implications they may have when it comes to dental treatment.”

Northern Territory

THE LAST THREE months have just flown by, I can’t believe we are nearly half way through 2016 – but as they say; ‘Time flies when you are having fun.’ In April I had the pleasure of visiting the dental school at Gilles Plaines TAFE SA and meeting with the first-year ADOH students. The students were keen to hear about what the DHAA does and what the benefits are of being a member. I am pleased to say each one of them signed up as student members and many have registered for our upcoming CPD supper meeting. It’s great to see so many enthusiastic new faces coming in to the industry. The South Australian committee is very excited to be hosting the 2017 National Symposium here in Adelaide over three days from 12-14 October. South Australian director, Alison Taylor, has been working hard doing the

ground work to get this event up and running and it is a great opportunity for SA to host this large scale event. The world of pharmacology is ever changing and patients are always presenting to the clinic with a list of new medications with strange names. Part of our responsibility as an oral health care provider is to know what these medications are and any implications they may have when it comes to dental treatment. New age anticoagulants have come on the market that are not able to be tested for INR and this presents a new set of challenges in periodontal treatment. Dr Simon McRae, South Australia’s leading haematologist, will be presenting on this very topic at our upcoming June Dinner meeting at the newly renovated Adelaide Oval. This event is always a sell out and

I’m sure the topic will mean tickets will be snapped up very quickly. Each year DHAA SA hosts a joint event with ADOHTA SA/NT. At the time of writing this the event is yet to come but by the time the Bulletin is published it will have been and gone. This year it was the DHAA’s turn to organise the event and on Friday 20 May at The Highway Hotel, Dr Mary Apps presented “Achieving oral health for preschoolers: an update”. Her presentation focused on the current guidelines and recommendations regarding oral health promotion during pregnancy, infancy and early childhood, as well as the evidence behind preventive advice. In addition to this, Mary discussed teething and its management. This year’s event was proudly sponsored by MIPS.

BY THE TIME this bulletin reaches you the new and greatly improved DHAA website will have had it’s official launch. The new website is very exciting for us in the Territory. It signals the

commencement of our membership drive. This will involve an email campaign to local practices, meeting up with local hygienists and Oral Health Therapists, spreading the word on social media

and amongst the dental community. I look forward to organising the NT’s first CPD events and catch ups for new members over the next few months.

Victoria

THE YEAR IS hastily rushing by and this month signals the end of the current CPD cycle. Our last event was held as a half-day program and celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the DHAA. The event proved extremely popular and was officially a sell-out – hosting approximately 50 delegates with many students present and sponsored by Oral B. A reminder of scheduled events to be held in Victoria: 18 June 2016

was ‘Prevention for the Patient and Practitioner’. The day began with our Platinum sponsor Colgate representative Jenny Morgan introducing the new Colgate website. Katrina Murphy was our first presentation of the day taking us out of our comfort zone with the role playing of negotiating skills. This was a very valuable exercise and highly regarded by those in attendance. After morning tea our presenters Dr Graham Craig and IFDH incoming President Robyn Watson took the floor as we looked at the use of Silver Fluoride. Straight after lunch we tackled the serious topic of head and neck cancer with

Dr Sarah Chaw and Kelsey Pateman. To finish the day Libby Dann looked at how to improve our working posture by strengthening our core completing the day with a pilates class. Positive feedback from those in attendance was credit to the hard-working Queensland committee that strive to provide quality CPD events for our members. We look forward to seeing you on 15 October at The Women’s college at the University of Qld for our breakfast meeting with Carol Tran. The topic Debriding in the Fast Lane – Rapid and with Efficiency. Discussing Ultrasonic and Air polishing. Robbern White Queensland Chair
