Ministerial Roundtable at ITS Vienna 2012 Interview with Ministers Doris Bures (Austria), Pavel Dobes (Czech Republic), Flourentzou Efthemios (Cyprus), Alan Kelly (Ireland) , Merja Kyllönen (Finland), and Tuck Yew Lui (Singapore)

Thirteen Ministers of Transport will meet in Vienna in the morning of the official opening of the 19th ITS World Congress. In a 2-hour close discussion, Ministers participating and high level representatives will debate the needs and challenges for the successful implementation of ITS. The roundtable will be a great opportunity to share successful stories and the results of national ITS policies and to discuss the impact these projects have had on transport, the environment and society. Last but not least, Ministers will decide on the next steps within the framework of international meetings and World Congresses and endorse a joint statement to support a common approach among the countries for safer, more efficient and greener transport systems and mobility services of the future. We had the exclusive opportunity to interview some of the Ministries participating in the roundtable and asked them to share their expectations on ITS deployment, the message they will be giving at the meeting and their hopes for future ITS. (Czech Republic) If we ask children those who will be thirty in 2030 we would learn that most of them will consider deployment of ITS applications as a standard in daily life. My colleague once told me that his eight-years old daughter wrote in her fairy-tail focused homework the following: “Once upon a time an old grandma lived in a cottage near by a forest. She was poor, there was no furniture in her cottage and even there was no internet connection there…”. Based on this example we can see that today’s generation of children will consider the ITS to be a normal part of their daily lives. I personally believe that ITS as a tool for traffic management will increase infomobility and by this as well travel comfort. Furthermore ITS will make transport safer, securer and more efficient and will contribute

ITS Hall of Fame Established in 2010, the ITS Hall of Fame Awards are granted every year to three influential personalities in the three regions of Europe, Americas and Asia-Pacific. The recipients of the awards are selected based on their standard of leadership in transport technology. Each person has served an outstanding, lifelong career dedicated to organisational leadership in the field and thought leadership contributing to the vision of intelligent transport systems. This year the Hall of Fame will welcome three new outstanding ITS personalities during the Opening Ceremony. Chosen by their peers in the ITS industry, the Hall of Fame inductees have earned their place through their hard work, leadership and determination. ITS for Urban Mobility Day

15

The day will start with a session introducing the Guidelines for the deployment of key ITS applications in urban areas, developed by the Commission’s Expert Group on “Intelligent Transport systems for Urban Areas“. The Expert Group has developed specific guidance for the deployment of urban areas, in particular for the provision and organisation of multimodal information, of traffic management & urban logistics and of smart ticketing. The session will provide an opportunity for the ITS industry and city representatives to discuss and provide feedback. This session will be followed by two Executive sessions as part of the official Congress programme, focussing on “Future Trends in City Mobility” & “Making multimodality the pillar of modern life”. In between the two Executive sessions a tour will be organised through the exhibition, visiting stands specifically showing ITS demonstrations for Urban Mobility. The final session of the day, mobility challenges will be presented by three cities; London, Istanbul and Toulouse followed by a panel discussion amongst some of the biggest industry players. Siemens, Imtech Traffic & Infra, SWARCO, VIALIS Xerox and Q-FREE, will debate with the audience what they can do as an industry to insure closer cooperation, especially in the context of cooperative systems.

When? Wednesday 24 October from 9:00 to 17:30 - Strauss 3

2012 iMobility Awards Rewarding excellence in deployment of iMobility Systems The iMobility Awards provide an invaluable opportunity to highlight the successes of the most outstanding, ambitious and innovative iMobility deployments and to reward those people and organisations most worthy of recognition and praise. The iMobility Awards are given for the three categories: “Industry/Technology”, “Policy” and “National/Local ITS Implementation”. The second edition of the iMobility Awards Ceremony will be held in October 2012, on the occasion of the 19th ITS World Congress in Vienna (Austria). This year, the awardees will have the honour of having their achievement awards handed out by Neelie Kroes, VicePresident of the European Commission responsible for the Digital Agenda who will also give the welcoming speech. This year “Lifetime Achievement Award” will be awarded to Mr Jean-Pierre Medevielle Deputy General Director of IFSTTAR (French Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Development and Networks) for his dedication throughout his professional life to transport and intelligent mobility.

When? Friday 26 October at 11:30 - Stand C30

2012 ITS video competition 53 entrants. 2 categories. 5000+ votes. 7 ITS expert judges. 6 finalists. 1 VIP dinner vote. And the winners of the 2012 ITS video competition shown at the closing ceremony of the 2012 ITS World Congress. It’s that simple. In reality, the 2012 ITS video competition team is delighted with the response and enthusiasm for this year’s competition, the second after last year’s inaugural video competition at the Lyon European ITS Congress. We aimed to build upon the success of last year’s competition and also take into account the feedback received, so as to make this year’s competition bigger and better. We hope that we have not disappointed. The 2012 ITS video competition was launched in May this year. Early on we decided to have two categories of ITS video – directed at the general public, and directed at the ITS community. This was to reflect the aim of the video competition, to encourage the use of videos to raise awareness of the benefits and opportunities that ITS offers right now, in combating today’s - and tomorrow’s – transport challenges. The submission period lasted until 7 September, by which time 53 videos in total had been submitted. An open vote was then held, lasting just one week – but still over 5000 votes were cast! A shortlist of 8 videos in each category was compiled, and sent to an eminent panel of ITS experts. The ITS experts deliberated for two weeks to produce three finalists in each category.

The ITS expert committee • Hermann Meyer, CEO, ERTICO – ITS Europe • Scott Belcher, President and CEO, ITS America • Hajime Amano, President, ITS Japan • Pawel Stelmaszczyk, Head of Unit - ITS, DG MOVE, European Commission • Juhani Jaaskelaainen, Adviser for ICT for Transport and Energy, DG CONNECT, European Commission • Ingolf Schaedler, Deputy Director General, Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology, Austria • Jennie Martin, Chairman,

Category 1 Finalists: Videos for the General Public • “Co-operative Intelligent Transport Systems: Safe and Sustainable Transport” - Griffith University, Brisbane Australia • “LA Express Park Explained” - Streetline, Inc. • “VicRoads Freeway Management System” - VicRoads Category 2 Finalists: Videos for the ITS Community • “Nextcity - Making the Vision of Intelligent Travel a Reality” - Cubic Transportation Systems • “Newada” - Via Donau • “TomTom HD Traffic: the best traffic information” - TomTom These six finalists will be shown at the VIP dinner of the Vienna ITS Congress where a live vote to determine the winner will take place. The ultimate prize? The winner in each category will be shown at the closing ceremony of the Congress – and provide an example of good practice for future ITS videos! Just like the 2011 winner, “Young Thoughts on Future Travel” by the Stockholm City Traffic Administration. To thank everyone for their participation, the 2012 ITS video competition team would like to invite you to the ERTICO cocktail event, held on stand D30 from 17:30 on Tuesday 23 October – we welcome your feedback and look forward to meeting you. And don’t forget – not only have your videos been gaining viewers through the ERTICO, i-Mobility Network, Network of National ITS Association and

the National Network of

Vienna Congress websites, but will also be shown on a large screen on the ERTICO
