Editorial Dear Readers, ERTICO is very pleased to welcome new Partner the University of Leeds and have the opportunity to talk to Oliver Carsten, Professor of Transport Safety at the Institute for Transport Studies. The Institute has very successfully been involved in research on Intelligent Transport Systems since the late 1980s; For example, their extensive work on driver assistance systems such as intelligent speed adaptation and forward collision warning, as well as their “driving simulator”, a world-class facility and an important enabler for that research. Please read our February interview on page 2.

I would further like to inform you that ERTICO and TISA are organising a common Workshop on the issue of quality management related to the provision of ITS services. The meeting will take place on 13 April 2011 from 10:00 - 16:00 at the ERTICO premises, and all ERTICO and TISA Partners are invited to participate.

Interview of the month ERTICO talks to Oliver Carsten, Professor at the Institute for Transport Studies at new Partner the University of Leeds, UK ERTICO: Can you describe your activities in the ITS field?

Oliver Carsten: The Institute for Transport Studies (we had the ITS name before it was ITS!) has been involved in research on Intelligent Transport Systems since DRIVE I and actually even before that — for example we were involved in the original research projects on the benefits of route guidance systems for Berlin and London in the late 1980s. Since then we have had significant and continuous activity in the ITS domain. One example is our extensive work on driver assistance systems such as Intelligent Speed Adaptation and Forward Collision Warning, with both national and European funding. Our driving simulator, which is a world-class facility, has been an important enabler for that research.

ERTICO: What are your expectations for this partnership?

Oliver Carsten: We wish to be active members in ERTICO and hope that ERTICO will work for us as a conduit or enabler in both directions — providing us with crucial information on current and future activities at the European level and, in the other direction, helping us to make sure that our research is translated into appropriate best practice, standards and policy.

ERTICO: Why have you jointed ERTICO? Oliver Carsten: We see ERTICO as an organisation that promotes research in intelligent transport systems and also one that links research organisations with transport operators and industry. So ERTICO is a natural organisation for us to join, since it has influence on the research agenda and can provide us with activities and contacts that allow us to have an influence at the European level. We are aware of the growing importance of European research and of the increasing role of Europe in policy-making on transport. We also recognise that intelligent transport systems are increasingly central to the operation of the transport system as a whole.

ERTICO: Are there any projects, activities or sectors that you are particularly interested in?

Oliver Carsten: We are very interested in systems that promote safety and environmental benefits.

But as I said earlier our interests and skills cover a wide range, including choice modelling, policy issues, network simulation and transport economics. All those skills are relevant to intelligent transport systems and we have been involved in a number of projects where we have made use of these multi-disciplinary skills. For example, all these aspects are required when carrying out the “scaling-up” part of FOT in order to estimate the global benefits of system introduction.

About the Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds The Institute for Transport Studies (ITS) is a free-standing academic school of the University which carries out wide-ranging research as well as providing Masters and PhD programmes in transport. The Institute’s primary purpose is to advance understanding of transport activity, operations and use, and to develop skills and best practice among transport professionals and decision-makers.

ITS is one of the world’s largest academic centres for transport research and has been consistently recognised for the quality of its work. The national Research Assessment Exercise in 2008 confirmed ITS as a leading research institution,

with 95% of the research submission identified as being of “internationally recognised” quality for originality, significance and rigour.

ITS research ranges from blue-skies exploration of new ideas and concepts to targeted commissions for specific clients. A substantial proportion of it is conducted in collaboration with other leading institutions, often as part of European Framework Projects.

In 2010 ITS was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education for “sustained excellence — 40 years impact in transport research and teaching”.

Renault Trucks now on iPhone and Android with a special exclusive heavy duty vehicle GPS and location device For its launch on smartphones, Renault Trucks is releasing the first HGV-specific GPS available on iPhone along with a location device for its global network. For Renault Trucks, these applications only make sense if they help customers and drivers, and at the same time make their task easier in the job they do for society. It is for this reason that the manufacturer is the first to offer a special HGV GPS app for the iPhone.

Once the vehicle configuration has been entered into the system, the driver has a suggested itinerary offering the safest routes and those he is authorised to take. This is a revolution in the HGV world. The application is supplemented by a location device to contact the nearest Renault Trucks network outlet and will be supplemented by other applications which are currently being developed.

It’s happened before: the driver gets lost in an industrial park with his vehicle. This situation can be a real nightmare: additional kilometres driven and therefore extra litres of diesel consumed for no reason. Plus the delicate situation of skilfully manoeuvring to get out of a narrow road not suited to the vehicle’s dimensions. With the first special HGV GPS app for iPhone, Renault Trucks is offering an exclusive and revolutionary service to

road merchandise transport.

And whilst conventional GPSs for normal cars are useful they quickly run up against obstacles when used for commercial vehicles: roads that are too narrow, bridges with limited headroom, places they can’t turn round... until now there was nothing available to truck drivers. So with ALK, Renault Trucks has developed a special HGV GPS on the basis of NavTeq data which is the reference in this sector. This takes into account road merchandise transport constraints with specific functions and a particularly tastefully designed “public user” graphic interface.

The driver or fleet manager can enter the truck’s technical characteristics into the software (length, width, height, total weight, weight per axle), load type (hazardous materials or not) and road preferences (with or without toll, maximum speed authorised according to roads, etc.). All this data is loaded into the GPS which proposes the safest and quickest route, taking all those characteristics into account, throughout the European road network.

This means it will avoid low bridges, narrow roads, or roads the vehicle or the merchandise transported is not authorised, and will visually 3

NEWSLETTER indicate them throughout the itinerary. So as to help the driver at the wheel, the application also allows him to locate particularly dangerous roads, hilly areas, as well as areas where there is a risk of side winds. This means safety and fuel-saving benefits. As an option, the driver can also have access to traffic conditions and modify his route accordingly. Finally, throughout the itinerary the driver can visualise all areas which are useful to his job, such as service stations or Renault Trucks service centres. The Renault Trucks HGV GPS is currently available under App Store and very soon on Android. It is available throughout Europe in 16 languages (French, English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Czech, Polish, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Russian, Greek and Turkish) and costs 149,99 euros.

In parallel, Renault Trucks offers a free “Renault Trucks Network” application with which drivers can find the nearest Renault Trucks network outlet wherever they are in the world, as well as the services on offer (sales, maintenance, repair, Fast&Pro, 24/24 etc.). Once located, the driver can contact the dealership by telephone with a simple click or visit the website and then display the quickest route to get there. The application is

available in French and English, and details more than 1,500 Renault Trucks service outlets in the 100 countries where the manufacturer is present.

These new applications developed by Renault Trucks, already available for iPhone and very soon on Android, open up new possibilities to customers, fleet managers and truck drivers.

By providing them with useful tools to help them in their day-to-day mission, Renault Trucks is making these new technologies available to drivers and fleet managers as real, practical support. In particular, the new technologies will limit risks and traffic jams. They will thereby contribute to making road transport better, safer and more respectful of the environment. In the end, it is society as a whole that will benefit.

Other applications are currently being developed and will be published during the year. Here again, they will improve the lives of transport professionals by making their day-to-day work easier.

73rd International Scientific and Technical Conference: ‘Automobiles in ITS’, Moscow The 73rd International Scientific and Technical Conference: “Automobiles in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)” organised by the Association of Automobile Engineers (AAE) together with the Technical University MADI will take place on 23 24 March 2011 in Moscow.

Devoted to the 80th anniversary of MADI, the purpose of the conference will be to determine the prospects of an on-board “smart” automobile system for the Russian market, including devices for the exchange of information between the vehicle and the infrastructure that ITS created in Russia based on the analysis of international experience and data exchange.

The conference intends to discuss the technical, organisational and legal issues of application of onboard systems including: 4

• Information for the driver and passengers • Gathering and transmission of information for ITS infrastructure (including the framework of ITS ERA Glonass) • Automatic control of the automobile.

The Federal Highways Agency, ITS Russia, the creators of the ERA-Glonass and the developers of navigation-connected automotive equipment will be invited to the conference.

TISA News: Quality ITS Services Workshop to be held on 13 April 2011 Quality impacts every actor in the value chain of ITS services. Whereas every actor in the value chain is aware of the importance of quality management, the parameters used to assess quality may well cover different aspects.

ERTICO and the Traveller Information Services Association (TISA) are organising a common Workshop on the issue of quality in ITS services. This Workshop will offer the opportunity for participants to share all aspects of quality management. The objective is to share best practices and good examples on quality in ITS Services. The Workshop will target the next practical steps to be taken by the whole ITS community.

The meeting will take place on 13 April 2011 from 10:00 - 16:00 at the ERTICO premises.

TISA positioning on International Standards and Delivery Channels for Traffic and Travel information (TTI) TISA wishes to provide advisory information to all concerned with traffic and travel information services and products. TISA issues Position Papers to cover and explain the membership’s agreed policy, as required, in areas of business and technology. The beginning of 2011 has already seen the publication of the first two Position Papers of TISA which are covering issues of vital importance in the world of Real Time Traffic Information.

The first Position Paper “TISA and International Standards” highlights the TISA position in respect of the technical specifications and standards which support the service objectives of the European Union ITS Directive 2010/40/EU, in force

since August 2010.

The second Position Paper “Delivery Channels for Traffic and Travel Information (TTI) Services” provides background information about the delivery of TTI services and the issues that radio regulation needs to consider for the ubiquitous availability of TTI data services. It is issued jointly with ERTICO - ITS Europe.

TISA Webinar: 17 March 2011, 11:00 CET TISA has been invited to participate in the ERTICO webinar series which aims to provide an office-based environment to keep up to date without travelling to a meeting.

The webinar will be used to explain the workings of TISA in a “This is TISA” presentation covering the structure and working methods. A second part of the webinar will be a discussion about TISA’s “current hot topic”: the changing landscape of broadcast delivery for TTI. The question about some channels being switched off without suitable replacements becoming available has to be addressed.

The aim of the FOT-Net stakeholders meeting is to gather European players interested in FOTs to share information, results and developments of trials which are being carried out at European and national levels. The aim of these meetings is to foster cooperation and exchange information about the results of these field tests in terms of safety, efficiency, environmental benefits as well as cost-benefit and socio-economic impact.

The theme of the 5th Stakeholders workshop is “Deployment Roadmap: how FOTs are used to reach policy goals”. This edition of the stakeholders workshop will provide a forum for presentation and discussion on deployment best practices and the role of Public Authorities in the definition and implementation of FOTs.

Public Authorities are stakeholders with a key interest in the results of FOTs as these will support the Public Authorities in establishing the right policy framework for the deployment of ITS technologies. This workshop will provide an opportunity to look at best practices and examine different kinds of approaches to this matter.

FOT-Net will also take this opportunity to address its new activities: the revision of the FESTA methodology, the plans for transfer of FOT knowledge (seminars) and the development of methodological tools to identify stakeholder needs.

Lastly, European FOT-related activities will look into how the project results can be transferred to the stakeholders: what is the exploitation plan?

What will be done after the FOT is completed to ensure deployment?

FOT-Net webinar and upcoming events 1. FOT-Net organised a webinar on the topic of “Cooperation needs on Field Operational Tests” on Thursday 03 February.

Two experts examined the cooperation needs for Field Operational Tests and elucidated on how these will be tackled in the framework of the EC-funded activity FOT-Net. FOT-Net has been in place for almost three years as the networking platform for stakeholders involved or interested in FOTs. While the focus so far has been mainly on building up the FOT network and promoting the FESTA methodology, the next phase will explicitly address issues raised by the FOT network which need common European positions. Specifically, the FESTA methodology will be further refined, based on recent FOT experiences.

International Transport Forum: Ministers meet to debate “Transport for Society” Registration for International Transport Forum’s 2011 Summit Opens with Early Bird Discount until 30 April Registration is now open for the International Transport Forum’s 2011 Summit, to be held from 25-27 May. Transport Ministers, industry leaders and experts from around the world will gather in the city of Leipzig (Germany) to debate the theme “Transport for Society”.

“Future transport systems will have to meet the aspirations of about nine billion people, most of whom will live in cities. In addition, rising incomes will place high expectations on transport services,” said Jack Short, Secretary General, International Transport Forum.

The International Transport Forum at the OECD is an intergovernmental organisation that acts as a strategic policy think tank for the transport sector and organises an annual summit for Ministers from its 52 member countries and beyond. The summit has become the leading platform for a global dialogue on the future of transport and mobility between policy-makers, business leaders, research and civil society.

Spain holds the presidency of the International Transport Forum 2011.

In a joint welcome message, José Blanco López, Minister of Development and Transport, Spain; Dr. Peter Ramsauer, Federal Minister of Building, Transport and Urban Development, Germany, and Jack Short, Secretary of the International Transport Forum, said:

“A world without the very real daily benefits of mobility has become unimaginable. But all too often transport is taken for granted and societal demands on transport are constantly increasing.

Transport systems must be adapted to better serve us all, but these systems are complex, and not easy to change. Opportunities for more open, effective dialogue on the development of transport systems should be pursued in order to facilitate a better understanding throughout society of transport issues.”

Short added, “The demands that transport will put on global resources, including energy and the environment, will be so large that it is imperative for transport to function as efficiently as possible.

At the same time, investments in transport systems need to be maintained, as they underpin the creation of wealth and the growth of incomes to which people aspire.

This year’s summit in Leipzig is an opportunity for transport leaders from around the world to debate and strengthen the sector’s role in human development.”

GSC Final Workshop: Save the Date!

GSC will host its final workshop at Kapsch premises in Vienna When: 13 - 14 April 2011 Where: Kapsch TrafficCom AG Am Europlatz 2, 1120 Vienna, Austria Objectives: • Present results of the GSC project • Validate the deployment roadmap • Demonstrate possible future platforms (based on the GSC concepts).

The event will open on the evening of 13 April 2011. A networking dinner will be organised, during which the representatives of the main stakeholders groups, including public authorities, users and industries, will present their view on what GSC set out to investigate: the use of a common architecture for both Public Regulated

Services, such as Road User Charging and safety critical services like Speed Alert. Most importantly, the question of how the introduction of EGNOS will affect these services will be examined.

The second day will mainly focus on the GSC test results across Europe and on the presentation of the GSC roadmap. In addition, a live demonstration will demonstrate the results of the GSC trials. This will be the starting point for fostering an open discussion with participants.

Make PCP your tool for ITS deployment!

To help you out, the P3ITS project is releasing its PCP for ITS handbook, describing all you need to know before launching a Pre-Commercial Procurement (PCP) process in the ITS sector.

Where: ITS European Congress, Lyon (FR) When: Thursday 9 June, from 14:00 to 17:30 PCP is an underutilised approach to procuring innovative products or services. In this regard, P3ITS has engaged in a dialogue between procurers and ITS actors to investigate how it could be used for ITS deployment.

After the closing session, P3ITS will organise its free final workshop to share and discuss with European ITS delegates its results, consolidated in 8

a handbook. The main objective of this handbook is to guide practitioners in the preparation of a PCP programme or process, and make sure that all actors (procuring authorities, civil servants, consultants, legal experts and suppliers) are aware of the process. The workshop will also be an opportunity for you to hear the future use of PCP in the EU presented by the European Commission’s representative.

New Managing Director at AustriaTech AustriaTech – Federal Agency for Technological Measures Ltd. announced the appointment of Martin Russ as new Managing Director. His primary responsibility will be to ensure the company´s success on a national and international level. Prior to joining the company, Russ managed the research and development agendas in the Austrian Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology for the last few years and worked in the field of traffic and transport deployment and development for twelve years. As Managing Director, Martin Russ will be responsible for the Telematics business unit.

Reinhard Pfliegl, who was Managing Director of AustriaTech since its founding in 2005 will continue his work at AustriaTech as chair of the ITS World Congress 2012, taking place in Vienna.

In the next two years he will coordinate on behalf of the bmvit the local organisation of the most important conference and exhibition of the telematics industry in the world.

The business unit Technology Transfer will still be led by Roland Dietrich.

i-Move launches AnyMap Mobile Navigator 2.0, a versatile Navigation SDK for professional markets Following its introduction at the ITS Belgium Congress held in Brussels in 2010, i-Move launched its AnyMap Navigator product suite, a versatile and comprehensive navigation software development tool kit aiming at professional markets. Global Mobile Awards 2011 –The Winners!

The winners of the 16th Annual Global Mobile Awards have been announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today – Tuesday 15th February 2011.

Guests at the Congress party and Awards celebration were entertained by Grammy and Brit Award-winning singer Duffy and internationally acclaimed indie rock band Metric.

Hosted by British TV & radio star, Jonathan Ross, the winners were recognised in a two-part afternoon awards ceremony and evening Congress Party with Apple winning the award for Best Mobile Device (iPhone 4); HTC collecting the Best Device Manufacturer Award and Rovio, Chillingo/ Clickgamer, the overall Best Mobile App Award...

The afternoon awards ceremony included the presentation of nine categories of awards, including the first “Global Mobile Apps Awards”, introduced this year to celebrate the emerging trends in applications, as well as the “Mobile Innovation” category, which honoured achievements across vertical sectors such as health, education and transport and utilities.

2nd Annual ITS Ireland Conference and Exhibition Following the very successful conference in 2010, ITS Ireland is pleased to announce that the ITS Ireland 2011 conference will be held on Friday 7 October preceded by a dinner on Thursday 6 October in the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill, Co. Galway where a wide range of topics relevant to the use of ITS will be covered.

The theme for this year’s conference is “ITS Innovation in Action” whereby the innovative role of ITS in delivering sustainable, efficient and safe mobility will be examined. Innovation lies in delivering new technologies and also arises from innovative integration and deployment of existing technologies.

Delegates attending the conference will be drawn from a wide range of ITS disciplines, including representatives from Government authorities, local authorities, consultancies, academics, operators, service providers and manufacturers.

HAVEit launches two events 1. HAVEit Fusion Workshop, 22 February 2011, Brussels, Belgium The HAVEit Consortium – Highly Automated Vehicles for Intelligent Transport organised a successful workshop on information fusion for automotive applications.

The workshop took place in Brussels at the Volvo offices on 22 February 2011. It brought together previous and current research initiatives, allowing experts to discuss ideas, best practices and exchange knowledge in fusion related topics. Future research needs were also examined.

Thirty participants heavily engaged in fusion research, both from academia and industry, joined the discussions that focused on presentations of findings from previous projects followed by a round table. Erich Fuchs (University of Passau) made a keynote speech that encouraged interaction among participants through open discussions, in accordance with the EC’s emphasis on the fact that knowledge already generated should be put in good use and not be left unexploited.

2. HAVEit Final Event: The Future of Driving The HAVEit Final Event “The Future of Driving” will take place at the First Grand Hotel in Borås (presentations) and at the Volvo Proving Ground in Hällered (vehicle demonstrations and exhibition), Sweden, on 21 -22 June 2011.

The event is geared around new solutions on traffic safety and low fuel consumption where visitors can also experience the future of driving in demonstration vehicles and simulators. The HAVEit EC funded project has developed some exciting solutions based on a driver centric approach: 11

NEWSLETTER relieving the driver from monotonous or demanding driving tasks by higher levels of vehicle automation.

HAVEit’s unique Joint System selects the optimum vehicle path and the appropriate automation level depending on driver state and vehicle environment. In highly automated mode the HAVEit system performs the driving task under mere supervision of the driver. During the

event, participants can further experience automated driving first hand through roadworks and relaxed highway driving at speeds up to 120 km/h.

They will be invited to feel the comfort as passengers in a bus with active green driving strategies based on HAVEit technologies, or experience a trucker’s perspective through a live demonstration of truck safety and driving comfort enhancement by an automated queue assistant. Additional

vehicles and simulators will give the audience a deeper insight into future technologies like steer-by-wire and brakeby-wire, as well as how to measure the driver’s alertness.

CeBIT Global Conferences: CeBIT in Motion When: 1 - 5 March 2011 Where: Convention Centre (CC), Hannover Exhibition Grounds.

The upcoming CeBIT event on 1 – 5 March 2011 in Hannover is the largest IT event in the world, awaiting nearly 400,000 people to see more and more ITS related themes in 17 halls. As a member of the ITS Nationals, ITS Network Germany has been co-operating with Deutsche Messe AG in preparation to host this event for the past seven years. The growing role of IT and ITS in mobility will be highlighted by the participation of Alan Mulally, CEO of Ford, at the Global Conferences on CeBIT, as well as the first open view of the new Ford Focus.

Hall 17 will present a special exhibition format of “Destination ITS” where participants can see not only Ford showing their approaches to C2C systems but also Alcatel-Lucent with their LTE-solutions, Siemens with eMobility demonstrations or IBM and WABCO dealing with fleet management. There will be further a stand from the iCar Support project, which is co-funded by the European Commission.

On 3 March HeERO - the Pan-European eCall Demonstration Project - and ITS Niedersachsen are organising a special workshop dedicated to eCall, a project aimed at an interoperable and harmonised 112 based in-vehicle emergency call system throughout Europe. The full-day workshop 12

will include presentations by Emilio DavilaGonzalez (European Commission, DG INFSO-ICT for Transport) and Monica Schettino (Senior Project Manager and Leader of the HeERO Project, ERTICO), alongside with other key industry speakers.

All the exhibitions will be accompanied by the “CeBIT in Motion” forum where participants will have a chance to partake in the presentations and discussions organised by ITS Network Germany.

Egis Road Operation, the leading European Independent Road Operator and Service Provider Egis Road Operation has confirmed its position as the leading European independent road operator and service provider thanks to its recent acquisitions and awarded projects in various countries (France, Ireland, India and Australia).

Egis Road Operation has acquired a majority interest (67%) in three Irish motorway toll operation companies: • NorthLink (operator of the M1 Dundalk Bypass - 56 km long) • MidLink (operator of the M7 / M8 Portlaoise 43 km long) • SouthLink (operator of the N25 Waterford Bypass - 23 km long).

Egis Road Operation has also recently been awarded three motorway operation contracts: • the A63 motorway in France, a 105 km long toll motorway • the Brisbane Northern Link in Australia, a 7 km long urban expressway with 2 major tunnels • the Delhi-Gurgaon highway in India, a 27 km long toll highway.

With these acquisitions and successes, Egis Road Operation now has 27 motorways under contract in 15 different countries, totalling 1,840 km. This makes Egis the largest independent road operator, with highly diversified experience in terms of type of infrastructures (urban, interurban, tunnels, viaducts,…), type of tolling systems (electronic, freeflow, automatic, manual), contractual framework (real toll, shadow toll, availability payment, DBOM, service contract) and the local environment. Egis Road Operation operates these stretches of infrastructure with a total staff in excess of 5,250, including a large number of experts in the various fields of road operation and maintenance. The portfolio includes NTRL’s shareholding in North-Link (Dundalk), South-Link (Waterford) and Mid-Link (Portlaoise).

ITS United Kingdom publishes EU guide ITS (UK), the Intelligent Transport Society for the United Kingdom, has published The Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Practitioners’ Guide to Europe. The sixteen-page booklet aims to be an introduction to EU institutions for ITS professionals. “Europe” and its directorates, funding streams, research activities, legislation and so on are often seen as complex and confusing at the first approach. The new ITS (UK) guide gives a clear and brief introduction and explanation to help those whose work in ITS brings them into contact with EU institutions, either for the first time or not frequently enough for complete familiarity to have developed.

ITS Japan News: Governments Encourage Clean Energy Vehicles, Industry Gears Up For EV Electric Vehicles (EV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) as next-generation cars are integral to advanced mobile societies with ITS technologies, including re-charging facility networks. Below are the latest updates by the Japanese government and auto-manufacturers of EVs and PHEVs.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) recently organised a

joint symposium on the theme of “EV/PHV-friendly communities” in order to disseminate nationwide the results achieved to date by the METI EV & PHV Town project, and the MLIT-led town development project using environment friendly vehicles. The symposium was held at the Kyoto International Conference Centre on Friday, 4 February 2011. It was the first ever joint symposium on that theme, and comprised one facet of the two ministries’ separate efforts to achieve organic collaboration and information sharing in the context of popularisation of EVs and PHVs. METI has the “EV & PHV Towns” programme under which local governments proactively work to expand the use of EVs and PHVs, and develop a model to popularise the vehicles nationwide using the results obtained from the efforts of the model towns. On the other hand, MLIT intends to promote the creation of communities using environment friendly vehicles (electric powered transit buses, EVs, ultra-mini mobility vehicles), and is conducting demonstration projects in 16 areas across the country in order to study how to address and resolve issues involved in the introduction of environment friendly vehicles, as well as the design of urban transport facilities.

Movement in the Market: Electric cars Carmakers are scrambling to develop zero emission electric vehicles that are expected to be front and centre among next generation eco-cars.

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. became the first major automaker to market an electric vehicle with its release of the i-MiEV in summer 2009. Nissan followed suit last year.

Nissan Motor Co. further launched its Leaf electric vehicle in Japan on 20 December 2010 as its first mass produced electric car for the global market.

Honda unveiled the all new Fit EV Concept electric vehicle and the platform for a midsize plug-in

hybrid vehicle at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 17 November 2010 which will be introduced in Japan and the US in 2012. Both vehicles are integral to the Honda Electric Mobility Network, the company’s comprehensive approach to reducing CO2 emissions through innovative products, energy management and energy production technologies.

Toyota has begun test operations of a fuel cell hybrid bus tested at expressways with one of its subsidiaries, Hino Motors Ltd, on 16 December 2010. As part of the go-green initiative, Toyota is charting out the road trials for its iQ based Electric Vehicles expected to be released in 2012 in the Japanese, European, Chinese and American markets. Fuji Heavy Industry Ltd. which launched the Subaru Plug-in Stella last year, also aims at a mass production of the new vehicle.

Smaller, less known, local companies are similarly trying to manufacture EVs. An open top, custom made, one seat retro electric vehicle “Miluira”

by Takayanagi Co. in Hamamatsu city, Shizuoka prefecture, has been planned to reach the market this coming April. The small EV manufacturing companies hope in turn that the electric car business will give a jolt to an otherwise stagnating local economy.

TTS Italia news: the Italian plan for logistics presented The Secretary for Infrastructure and Transportation and President of the General Council for automotive and logistics, Bartolomeo Giachino, presented the new National Plan of Logistics in Rome: “We believe that the improvement of logistics, from ports to freight centres, from the urban distribution of goods to shorter waiting times for loading and unloading, together with a more convincing use of co-modality forms, will allow us to attract new volumes of traffic which currently

prefer the logistic efficiency of Northern Europe…

[This will] help our country grow 0.3 to 0.5 points of GDP a year.”

The National Logistics Plan was revised in light of the great changes brought about by the economic crisis and the new world economic balance. The plan aims to reduce the cost of logistic inefficiency by 10 points per year by 2011 (equivalent to EUR 4 billion). It draws attention to ITS as a fundamental instrument in supply chain management.

Pamela Valente studied at the “Sapienza” University of Rome and worked for 2 years for the Centro Italiano di Forrmazione Europea, a non-profit organisation aimed at informing citizens about current European matters. She carried out research activities and organised several seminars and cultural events. Pamela recently completed a postgraduate Master in European Studies at the IES – VUB in Brussels and worked in the field of events organisation.

At ERTICO Pamela will join the Congresses Department and work as Congress Programme Assistant contributing to the organisation and coordination of the 8th ITS European Congress in Lyon and the 18th ITS World Congress in Orlando.

Sophie Beaudoin holds an LL.B. in law from the Université de Montréal and before coming to Belgium worked for 4 years at the Just for Laughs enterprise in Montreal which organises Canada’s yearly comedy festival. She further worked as an assistant in the legal and commercial affairs department and later moved to the artists’ contracts department.

Sophie moved to Brussels to pursue an LL.M. in International and European law at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

After completing an internship in EU litigation, she joined ERTICO as Administrative Assistant to support the Financial and Administrative department in its tasks.

Laura Johnstone holds a Bachelors degree in International Business and French from the University of Central Lancashire (UK) and has previously spent time both working and studying in the Rhône-Alpes region of France. Following her studies she moved to Brussels for an administrative internship with the EU before joining the Partnership Services team at ERTICO.
