Dandelions And Love
Characters: Mallia (older sister) Camille (sick girl) Alex (boy she falls in love with) Susan (neighbor/ friend) Alina (Camille’s Friend) Native American( recipe guy) Setting In an old cottage in the middle of nowhere. Isolated pioneers scratch out of living in a large forested area.
Scene 1
(Mallia wakes up to her younger sisters moans) Camille: OOOOWWW, AAAAAH(she twists in pain, a fever givers her terrible sweat) Mallia: Camille not again. Stop whining. I’ve had enough of you complaints stop being a baby. (Mallia walks over and feels her forehead.) Mallia: Camille, are you okay? You’re burning up! Answer me! (Shakes her sister) Camille! Mallia: Susan wake up! (She screams across the cottage.) Susan: What is it dear! Mallia: She doesn’t seem to be getting any better. I am really worried. She won’t wake up.I think it is time I go off and try to find something to cure her kidney infection. (she says very fast and nervously without take a big breath) Susan: well ok be safe! (Mallia packs her stuff and goes out to find some thing. Camille wakes up) Camille: where is Mallia going? (She speaks in low painful tones). Susan: (leaning over with concerned expression) She is going off to find you something to cure your kidney infection, she has been researching in a book, cures and she is going to find dandelions, parsley, blueberries, garlic, and onions, It says they may work so she is going to find some and bring it back for you. Camille: no I don’t want her to leave me. Susan: sweetie she has to help you have been waking up in the middle of the night in screams. It scares us every night.
Scene 2
(Mallia is out in the fields looking for blueberries) Mallia: Where are the blueberries (she mumbles to herself) Is it the right time of year? Maybe I should have tried the supermarket instead….but I don’t have enough money. Mallia: Ow (she falls and drops her stuff)(Alex bumped into her)
Alex: oh I am sorry (She looks up at Alex and they look into each others eyes) Alex: (Looks away)(turns back) What are you looking for? Mallia: Blueberries. Alex: (laughs) You’re funny. Mallia: What?!! ( she wrinkled her nose in confusion) Alex: Are you crazy they don’t grow in this time of year. Mallia: (begins to cry, tears slowly running down her cheeks) Alex: Why are you crying? Mallia: My sister has a kidney infection and it says it will help, but I guess I can try to find dandelions or something. (She says in tears…decapitating an offensive weed.) Alex: Okay well I see you around. Let me know if you need help. Mallia: Ok see ya.(looking of into empty space) Scene 3
Mallia: Ah found one (jumps up in excitement) (Wind blows the pedal things away) Mallia: ah man (she throws it) (Out of the corner of her eye she stops something) (She runs towards it or someone) (A hunched older woman was shuffling through the tall grass. She was dressed a beaded dress made of tanned deerskin). Mallia: A Native American he probably would know some good recipes? (She mumbles to herself) Mallia: Oh! Excuse me sir. (She waves her hand in the air.) Do you know of any dandelion remedies for infections? Native American: Oh yes, yes I happen to have some left in my pocket. Here do you like this one. (Grabs another piece of cured hide unwrapping the remedy.) This one. (Grabs another piece.) This one. (Grabs another piece of paper.) Or this one. (Grabs another piece wrapped in hide.) Mallia: I think the second one is perfect. Native American: ok here you are. Mallia: Thank you so much. She mumbled to herself “why do we fear them so” Native American: Glad to be of help.
Scene 4
(Susan is pacing around the room) Camille: When is Mallia going to come back, I really miss her. Susan: I really don’t know. I hope she comes back soon. Camille: Can I have some water? Susan: Sure
(Walks to their jug of water) Susan: oh, no we’re out, I am going to go down to the well and get another jug. Camille: Ok don’t be too long Susan: Stay in your bed (Camille is lying in her bed when she hears a scream and it sounds like Susan. (Camille grabs her teddy bear and begins to talk to it) Camille: Teddy should I listen to what grandma says and stay in bed or go see who screamed? Camille: Ok I will wait and see if I hear the scream again. (She is sitting there listening and she hears the scream again.) Camille: ( Jumping expectantly.) Ok teddy I am going (Camille puts on her slippers and heads out to see what the scream was. She c out the door in a lot of pain) (Camille found Susan and she is perfectly fine.) Susan: Camille I told you not t leave your bed. Camille: I know but I thought I heard you scream. Susan: No I am fine maybe you were imagining (Camille slumps over in sorrow) Susan: Ok let’s go get back (They walk back in silence)
Scene 5 (Mallia is out in the fields reading the book when Alex quietly walks up behind her) Mallia: This one is perfect!! (hers lighting up like flashlights) Alex: Well that’s good you found one. Mallia: (becomes frightened) You scared me Alex: Well I am sorry. So what is the recipe you found? Mallia: Pickled Dandelion Flower Buds. It includes, onions, ginger, cloves, apple cider vinegar, tamari sauce, and the dandelions. But the thing I don’t have some of the ingredients in the chest, so could I maybe use some of you ingredients that you have and you mix the remedy once I find some dandelions. Alex: sure it’s a date Mallia: Ok it’s a date. Can you help me pick some dandelions? Alex: sure Mallia: Wow look at all the those dandelions over there Alex: wow that is a lot. Mallia: Here is a whole bunch. Alex: That is great now we can go my house.
Mallia: Yeah that is great
Scene 6
(In their old cottage) Camille: When is Mallia going to get back? Susan: Probably by tonight, I hope. (Alina knocks on the door.) (Camille gets up and looks through the window.) Camille: It’s Alina! (she says excitedly) Susan: That’s Great (She says while Camille opens the door.) Alina: Camille how are you feeling. Camille: Still have a bad pain in the small of my back and it burns but I feel the pain is going away. Alina: Thanks great I brought you a present. Camille: Oh thanks! Alina: Here it is Camille: It’s cute. (It is a giant teddy bear.) Camille: I love it. Alina: I hope you did. My mom said I couldn’t be gone long so, I have to go. I hope you liked the present. Bye! Camille: Bye, can’t wait to see you again. (Door closes)
Scene 7 (the pots and pans are clunking in the kitchen.) Mallia: Where is the apple cider vinegar? Alex: Here I will get the ingredients from the pantry and fridge and stuff while you start to make it. Mallia: ok, right now I need ½ cup of onions. Alex: ok (Alex gets all of her ingredients and she finishes it up.) Mallia: I finished it!
Alex: Yeah! Let’s try it. (They each take a bite) Alex and Mallia: Mmmmmmm (Mallia and Alex begin to kiss) Alex: Mallia will you go out with me. Mallia: Sure, let’s bring the food for my sister and the extra stuff. Alex: Ok (They kiss...Looking at each other uncomfortably) Alex: Let’s get going (looking confused) Mallia: Yeah (begins to look away)
Scene 8
(Mallia knocks on the door of her house) Camille: Ow my back. Could you get the door Susan? Susan: Sure. (Susan opens the door) Mallia: I am back with a new friend I made. Here is the special recipe. (Mallia walks over to Camille) Mallia: Try it. (Camille takes a bit) Camille: Mmmmm I am feeling better already. Mallia: That’s great. Camille: What’s your name (she ways to Alex.) Alex: My… (Mallia interrupts) Mallia: I will be in the other room (Susan follows.) Camille: Ok. So what is your name? Alex: My Name is Alex Camille: I like that name. Alex: I have a very important question for you but first, what is your name? Camille: Camille
Alex: Ok, Camille is it ok if I ask you sister out she is beautiful kind and loving and I would love to come and see you more often. Camille: Ummmm well (Alex begins to look hopeful) SURE! Alex: That’s great (He says while trying to keep his excitement in.)
Scene 9
Alex: Mallia will you go out with me. You are the most ummm …interesting person I have ever met and I want to help you and your sister out and you can be like one of my own sisters. You know I’ve always wanted a sister and this is my chance to have one. Mallia: Thank you for all you’ve done, but first let me ask my sister because she is already going through enough pain. I don’t want her to go through more pain. Alex: I already asked Mallia: Then it would be perfect. (Mallia and Alex kiss) (Camille walks in) Camille: Whoa you’ve already gone that far. (Everyone begins to laugh) Alex: (Alex gets down on his knee) May I take you two beautiful ladies out for dinner. Camille and Mallia: We would be delighted.
