HAPPY NEW “FISCAL” YEAR! A letter From Executive Director, Bob Allenick Dear Congregants, July 1st marks the beginning of The Temple’s new fiscal year – so welcome back to our members for another year of learning, worship, song, fun, and sharing of the holidays and traditions that make The Temple our strong and vibrant congregational home. As a reminder, Temple membership – automatically renews from one fiscal year to the next. You will be receiving your first billing invoice of the new fiscal year early in July. You will also find a “Membership Commitment/Payment Options Form” enclosed with the envelope. If you do not plan to pay your full dues commitment in July, we ask that you return the form to let us know how and when you’ll be paying your dues commitment over the course of the year. Returning the form (or full payment in July) also facilitates our processing of your High Holy Day tickets. We know that you count on us – and The Temple counts on your support as well. Your membership commitment allows us to provide the Clergy, staffing, and building support that makes it possible for us to offer you quality and innovative Judaic programs, education services and events. So, please communicate with us, and we will do likewise. We are here to serve you and join with you in our rich community life - so don’t hesitate to contact us with any suggestions, questions or concerns. If you decide to leave The Temple for any reason, you must notify us in writing or by contacting me at 216-455-1700 or Membership Director, Allison Shippy at 216-455-1703 so that we can properly process your resignation and remove you from our billing system. We will also be very interested in learning about your reasons for leaving. Looking forward to a wonderful summer and a successful fiscal year. With warmest regards, Bob

FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY A favorite New Yorker cartoon featured a synagogue it called “Temple Sha’arei Shamayim,” i.e., “Gates of Heaven.” Hanging over the sign identifying the congregation was a temporary one that read, “Closed for the Summer.” The suggestion that God, like most religious schools, takes the summer off, strikes me as funny and incongruous. Where, I wonder, would God go on vacation? California’s Heavenly Valley? And what would God do for recreation? Perhaps golf, since there are 18 holes, and it surely is not coincidental that eighteen is the Hebrew numerical value of chai, or “life.” Still, keep in mind the advice attributed to Arnold Palmer: What should a golfer do if caught in a thunderstorm? Hold up a #1 iron. Even God can’t hit a #1 iron!” While I doubt the cartoonist knew it, an ancient rabbinic text tells us, “While the gates of prayer are sometimes open and sometimes closed, the gates of repentance are always open.” Another adds, “The gates of tears are never closed.” These texts suggest, I think, that while routine prayers may not always be well-timed, prayers motivated by a profound desire to become a better person or that emerge from a broken heart, are always timely. Likewise, while some synagogue programs operate only during the school year, most, in fact, are ongoing. We still have services every Shabbat, including Rock My Soul Shabbat outdoors and TGIS (Thank God It’s Shabbat). Adult learning programs happen throughout the summer. Ganon Gil Preschool summer camp programs and our weekly Tot Shabbat go on. Our phenomenal library remains open, as does the Maltz Museum, where an important selection of our priceless Judaica holdings are displayed in The Temple – Tifereth Israel Gallery. Clergy are available for life cycle events, counseling, and support. Our website is enriched with weekly divrei torah. And a congregational trip to Israel goes forth. To the extent that the cessation of school year programs frees up time, the vacuum is filled to overflowing with preparations for programs that will resume in September. I don’t know about Temple Sha’arei Shamayim, but The Temple-Tifereth Israel is very much open and alive all summer. Please participate! Summer is also a good time to begin reflecting on the year that began with Rosh Hashanah last fall, in preparation for the high holy days to come, and to ask ourselves fundamental questions. How well have I done this year in living in accord with my values? Have I contributed to the lives of others in substantive ways? Have I shared my blessings as generously as I can? Have I expressed my love and gratitude, often and deeply, to those who deserve them? Have I stayed in touch with people who mean a lot to me? Have I worked to advance, if only in a small way, the survival and wellbeing of the Jewish People, the Jewish heritage, and the Jewish State? Looking ahead, what is my foremost goal for self-improvement for next year? Which of my lesser qualities ought I to focus on diminishing and which of my better ones should I try to develop further? How can I achieve a healthier balance between self and others, between work and family, between taking and giving? What relationships should I try to repair? What might I do to add more meaning and purpose to my life? How can I leave the world better for my having lived? Such questions aren’t easy, but the answers can be life-changing. I wish you a summer of rest, reflection and renewal. L’shalom u’veracha – In peace and blessing, Rabbi Richard A. Block

NEW HEBREW APPROACH The Hebrew language and the study of Hebrew continue to be binding elements for Jews worldwide. There are values and ideals that can only be expressed through the Hebrew language, prayer in Hebrew is unique to the Jewish people and resonates through time, Hebrew as a spoken language is contemporary, yet difficult to learn in limited religious school hours. For one hundred years supplementary schools have contemplated how best to allocate time to the education of students. Questions regarding Hebrew continue to include: • What should be the goal of teaching Hebrew in a congregational school? • Which aspects of Hebrew (e.g., prayer, textual, conversational, or value-based isolated vocabulary) should be the focus? • What are the most "efficient" ways of teaching decoding (reading)? • Should Hebrew be a separate subject, or integrated with other Judaic content? • What works? What could work? As a serious Jewish educator and lover of Hebrew, I have continually grappled with this issue. Indeed, unsatisfied with the options offered, I created and wrote an entire curriculum currently published by the Union of Reform Judaism Press, and being used by over one hundred Reform and Conservative congregations. However, times and needs change and develop. This year at The Temple we will be embarking on a new approach to our Jewish Studies and Hebrew program that will allow us to better engage students and families in Jewish Learning and Living and to continue our high expectations for Hebrew preparedness. We have been very successful, and nationally acclaimed, for our TPR (Total Physical Response) Hebrew program these last few years. This approach (which we use in Kindergarten through grade six) allows for natural language acquisition by letting children hear and respond to Hebrew commands, eventually blending ritual Hebrew vocabulary into the program. This readies students for reading (decoding) in a natural and fun way in addition to familiarizing them with Hebrew as a spoken language. Beginning in September, we will be emphasizing TPR for grades 3 & 4, while also devoting more class room time to discussion of the meaning behind liturgy and ritual. We will delay the emphasis on decoding (reading) until 5th and 6th grades, when we believe students will be highly motivated to learn. Reading groups will be smaller in grades 5 & 6 with more teachers dedicated to those Hebrew classes. We have found that students at this grade level can learn to decode quickly when prepared. The education faculty and staff and the temple clergy have spent months in discussion about these developments and we are excited to move forward. The new program will take a few years to phase in, but this year the 3rd and 4th graders will see the differences in their programs. To learn more about what Religious School will look like for our 3rd and 4th graders this year parents are invited to attend one of two meetings – Sunday, July 29 at 10:30 am or Wednesday, August 1 at 7:00 pm. Both meetings will be held at The Temple, Beachwood. Please RSVP to Ann Hudec at 216-831-3233 ext. 111 or at ahudec@ttti.org. – Cheri Ellowitz, Director of Education

The Olympics Games in Israel Stamps Over the years, Israel has issued 10 stamps to honor the Olympic Games. This year will mark the 60th anniversary of Israel’s participation in the games beginning with the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. In 2004 Gal Friedman won Israel’s first Olympic Gold Metal in Sailing. Israel issued a Gal Friedman Athens 2004 Olympic Winner Sheet to commemorate his achievement. This stamp exhibit also commemorates Shaker Heights native David Berger and 10 other Israeli athletes and coaches who were murdered by the Black September at the Munich Olympics in 1972 – 40 years ago. The special Memorial Issues and stamps in the exhibit, from several countries, were created in memory of the eleven Israeli athletes and coaches who died in Munich and feature a portrait of each individual and a statement, “The 1972 Olympics in Munich was the scene of the greatest tragedy in the history of 20th century sporting competition. It left a black mark on the Olympic flag. Eleven Israeli sportsman, coaches and referees were murdered by Palestinian terrorists who violated the atmosphere of the Games.” David Berger graduated Shaker Heights High School in 1962 and attended Tulane University where he won the NCAA Weightlifting title and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. As a student athlete, he achieved a MBA and a Doctor of Law degree from Columbia University. In the 1970s he immigrated to Israel, won a Silver Medal at the 1971 Asian Games and made the 1972 Olympic team. David, age 28, competed on September 2, 1972. The David Berger National Memorial, created by Cleveland sculptor David E. Davis, is located at the entrance of the Mandel Jewish Community Center, on our campus, and is recognized by the U.S. Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark. In 2006, David’s parents, Dr. Benjamin and Dorothy Berger donated postal materials to The Temple Museum that honored their son and his teammates. This exhibition was curated by Dr. Arthur Newman.

The 2011-12 Annual Appeal...
Honoring a M ment in our Lives It’s hard to find the words to say thank you. Thank you to The Temple families whose support and generosity of spirit helped us once again reach our goal! Thank you to The Temple members, young and old, who sent us a collection of narratives (pages 8 & 9) which will serve to strengthen our link between the past and the future of The Temple. Thank you to our amazing committee whose tremendous effort culminated in this success. Thank you for making The Temple and The Annual Appeal a priority. Thank you for helping to ensure The Temple will maintain the high levels of religious, cultural, educational, life cycle and social programs that our congregants have come to appreciate and expect. And of course, Thank you for allowing the Temple to continue its long-standing policy of never turning away a member as a result of his or her inability to pay our standard dues.
Thank you! Nancy Libman & Jeanne Tobin, 2011/12 Annual Appeal Chairs

The 2011-12 Annual Appeal... Honoring a Moment in our Lives
As we pass through life, there are defining moments that leave an indelible impression.
Thank you to the following congregants who shared their personal “moments” with us! There are many moments, but they all add up to feeling very connected to a caring and spiritual community that has become an important part of my life. Best of all, I know there will be many more joyous moments to come... – Anonymous
•
My husband and I travelled to Israel with Rabbi Block and 40 other congregants a few years ago. Until then Israel was a concept in my head. After the trip, Israel was a feeling in my heart! – Jeanne & Jordan Tobin
•
After years of intensive study, believing in the values of Judaism, two defining moments in our lives that have left indelible impressions are our conversion and subsequent B’nai Mitzvah – the honor of ascending the bima and chanting our Torah portion from the scrolls. – Barbara & Tom Kuby
•
I am very proud of my grandson David Regal for the beautiful Bar Mitzvah service he conducted on his 13th birthday. – Joan Eigner
•
At our children’s consecration – watching them begin their formal Jewish studies and knowing they were carrying on the tradition of our Jewish people and five generations of our family at The Temple. – Debra & Jason Hollander
•
New to a community. New to a temple. What to expect? Acceptance and friendliness followed. A philosophy and meaning that fit perfectly as well. Yes, we belonged to a number of congregations previously in other places we have lived. But here we have found a home for the next part of our lives. – Pearl & Ron Waxman

I appreciate the clergy as well as other staff who serve The Temple. Rabbi Block who so graciously made a presentation at the Beachwood Arts Council’s Diversity Fest – along with Sue Koletsky who brought beautiful artwork to our show. Rabbi Klein’s Torah Study on Saturday morning and his SmART Sunday sessions. Rob Ross’ TGIS services and other arts programming. Rabbi Rosie and her involvement with TWA. – Rita Frankel

I am 101 years old. A member of The Temple for 70 years. This Temple has been here for my family graduations, marriages and I held my 100th birthday party at The Temple. We have always enjoyed the services! – Ruby Levine
One of the most memorable moments at The Temple was the day I became a Bat Mitzvah and all of my children and grandchildren were there watching their mother and Nana read from the Torah. I wore my oldest granddaughter’s tallit and I held my oldest grandson’s yad to read from the Torah. It’s always a special moment seeing my grandchildren become B’nai Mitzvah. – Eleanor J. Weisman
•
On December 6, 1923 I was born in Mt. Sinai Hospital on E. 105th Street in Cleveland, OH. When I looked out of the window of my birthing room I saw “The Temple” under construction. When I looked out of the North window I saw the Hough Avenue streetcar barn of the “Cleveland Railway Company.” Now, in 2011, I am still a member of The Temple and still receive a monthly pension check from the transit system of the “Cleveland Railway Company.” – Robert Korach
•
Five generations have been associated with The Temple – my grandmother was president of the sisterhood, my parents were confirmed there as were my wife, our children and I. Our son Scott and our grandchildren were all B’nai Mitzvah. We were married by Abba Hillel Silver. The Temple has been and continues to be a meaningful part of our lives. – Peggy & John Garson
•
Rabbi Rosie helped us bury our dear mother and she was there for our grandchildren’s baby namings. It has been a thrill to see Eleanor, Joshua and now Michael become B’nai Mitzvah. Rabbi Rosie has helped us so much during life-cycle events of so much importance and meaning. We are forever grateful. – Merle & Vic Vertes
•
Good health for me and my family. Here and in California. – Mrs. I.D. Jacobson
•
I’ve had the opportunity to partake in many wonderful life cycle events at the Temple- Consecration, Wedding, Bat Mitzvah, Confirmation, Wedding... yes- two weddings. And in that order! When I got engaged in 2005, and my husband and I decided to get married at the Temple, it was a little awkward explaining to him that I was already married once at our temple- the first time in 1987. Yep, an early marriage at age 6. As a part of Mrs. Saginor’s class’s mock wedding, I was the lucky name chosen out of the hat to be the bride! So once at the Branch, and once at the Main, I had the honor of celebrating in a Jewish wedding at the Temple. – Amy Libman Brodsky

Many Moments. Friday night Shabbat service. The intimacy of the congregants harmony of purpose, care with which the Rabbis conduct the service, intelligence of the d’var Torah, the outside scene – looking at changing trees and outdoor beauty as all darkens after the time change in the fall, Cantor Sebo’s expressive singing, the best hour for reflection and peace. – Gert Mann

I have for 50 years felt a sense of contentment and peace in the Silver Sanctuary. Yom Kippur weekend (2007) was especially difficult for me as my closest friend who lived Baltimore, MD was taken to a hospice facilty, which meant I would never see her again. The memorial services and Rabbi Block’s sermon on friendship gave me an opportunity to reflect on the wonderful times we spent with my friend. It was so good at the conclusion to see our clergy embrace and for me to feel the warmth and friendship. – Louise Sternberg
•
I was confirmed by Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver in 1946. I also sang in the Temple choir. Although I live in Youngstown I shall always keep my membership in The Temple-Tifereth Israel. – William J. (Bill) Gerson
•
I have to go back many years to when we first put on the first Temple musical in the new Luntz Auditorium (followed by many other shows.) First was “My Fair Natie,” and then, I think the name was “Maven of Oz,” with Marv Dorfman playing the maven. We all had a great time singing our hearts out at our Temple. Loved it !!! – Bette Lawrence

We have wonderful memories of our children’s B’nai Mitzvot with Rabbi Rosie and Cantor Kathy beside them. They were truly significant life moments that we will cherish forever. – Lauren & Dr. Norton Winer

Mel and I have been members of The Temple for 47 years during which we participated in many life cycle events. Some of them included our son’s Bar Mitzvah, our son and daughter’s confirmation, a wedding, several baby namings, and the funeral services for both of our mothers. Each event was special, beautiful and spiritual, but for me the best was reading from the Torah in front of the congregation when I became a Bat Mitzvah at 69 years old. – Sally & Mel Ross

Today 2/25/2012 was the first time I could attend Shabbaton since my cancer diagnosis in December. I am bald from chemo and wearing hats. As a gesture of support other Shabbaton families also wore hats. I was/am so touched by that. – Meryl Soto Schwartz

We often like to think of our Temple as a home away from home. During the week of Sunday, July 29th to Sunday, August 5th we will literally transform our congregation into a home for several homeless families. The Temple-Tifereth Israel is proud to host families through the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN). This community program provides the necessities of life – food, shelter and security for 30 to 60 days enabling participants to regroup, rejuvenate and reintegrate with dignity into the community. During the day the adults receive job training and skill building while their children continue to go to school.

Set up • Tear down • Prepare and serve dinner • Run early evening activities • Sleep overnight This is a wonderful opportunity for single or multi generational participation, reinforcing our congregation’s connection to Tikkun Olam - Repairing the World. Our high school students are encouraged to volunteer during IHN for their Tikkun Olam and Spirituality Requirements. Please contact Faith Schaffer FS321@aol.com or Rabbi Stacy Schlein at 216-831-3233, ext. 133, for further information.
GREATER CLEVELAND CONGREGATIONS We are proud that our congregation is making a difference throughout Cuyahoga County in partnership with other faith communities. Our participation in Greater Cleveland Congregation’s continues to build momentum, create changes and provides an opportunity to build our relationships with others throughout our county. Jobs: GCC will be providing a jobs support network for congregants who are looking for positions and also creating a database so our members can advertise and post job openings in their businesses. Education: We are focusing on improving the quality of education in the county in two ways. One, by improving community support for children newborn to age five though both formal and informal programs. Two, by helping parents and students in the City of Cleveland organize effectively so their voices can be heard. The summer is the perfect time to get involved. We will meet throughout the summer to identify more specific issues to make a difference and study best practices nationwide.
COMMUNITY KITCHEN/SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM Jewish Volunteer Network volunteers are needed to help prepare children’s lunches at the Cleveland Foodbank beginning June 14 and ending August 24. Approximately 2,500 meals are prepared per day and served to children in need at 40 sites. Individuals and groups are welcome Monday through Friday. Must be 12 years or older.
LIBRARY LINES WITH ANDREA DAVIDSON Don’t miss our new DVD: Anita, a heart-warming Argentine film which has won numerous awards at U.S. film festivals. The main character, Anita Feldman, has Down syndrome, and a child-like innocence, which “shines the light on the very bonds that connect family and community.” When things are at their darkest, sometimes it takes a girl like Anita to remind us that we’re not alone in this world. In another outstanding DVD: Arranged, an Orthodox Jewish girl and a Muslim girl become friends at the school where they’re teaching, despite the objections of their families. This friendship helps them learn to take charge of their own happiness while both of their families are seeking arranged marriages for them. Also new at the library: Hank Greenberg: The Hero Who Didn’t Want to be One, by Mark Kurlansky. The book outlines the tremendous Anti-Semitism Greenberg had to confront throughout his career, and how he showed his dedication to his religion by not playing in the momentous game on Yom Kippur, 1934. We’re planning the 2012-13 Literary Club Book Discussion schedule, which meets on the second Monday of the month and will begin in the fall. If you have a favorite book you would like to have discussed, or a favorite reviewer, please e-mail your suggestion now to adavidson@ttti.org, or call 216-455- 1724.
