Voki Book Review Lesson Plan UNIT/TOPIC: Literacy/Story Elements/Book Review created with Voki GRADE LEVEL/CLASS: 4th Grade BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Students will select and read one book from the following list: Once by Morrie Gleitzman Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White Sadako and the Thousand Cranes by Eleanor Coerr Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech Johnny Swanson by Eleanor Updale From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg After reading the book, analyzing the story elements and completing the story elements table, the students will use Voki to create a book review incorporating three elements of literature and providing a personal recommendation. CONTENT STANDARDS ADDRESSED BY PROJECT: (ODE Standards) Language Arts Reading Applications: Literary Text—Students enhance their understanding of the human story by reading literary texts that represent a variety of authors, cultures and eras. They learn to apply the reading process to the various genres of literature, including fables, tales, short stories, novels, poetry and drama. They demonstrate their comprehension by describing and discussing the elements of literature (e.g., setting, character and plot), analyzing the author’s use of language (e.g., word choice and figurative language), comparing and contrasting texts, inferring theme and meaning and responding to text in critical and creative ways. Strategic readers learn to explain, analyze and critique literary text to achieve deep understanding. ____1. Describe the thoughts, words and interactions of characters. ____2. Identify the influence of setting on the selection. ____3. Identify the main incidents of a plot sequence, identifying the major conflict and its resolution. ____4. Identify the speaker and recognize the difference between first- and third-person narration. ____5. Determine the theme and whether it is implied or stated directly.

STUDENT TECHNOLOGY STANDARD ADDRESSED BY PROJECT: (ISTE Student Standards) 1. Creativity and Innovation b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression. LEARNING/INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: (Detailed Plan) 1. Students will select a book from the list provided. 2. Students will read the book and fill in the table for recording elements sheet (3 weeks) 3. Students will come to class with a copy of the book and the completed table. 4. Using the information from the table, the students will write a book review of the story they read including at least three items from the table. Students will also include a personal recommendation of the book (like, dislike, who would enjoy the book, etc.). 5. Students will work in the school computer lab and independently login to their Voki accounts. 6. Students will follow the directions provided for creating a Voki. 7. Students will create a new Voki. 8. Students will type in their book reviews and personalize their Voki. 9. Students will send the URL of their completed Voki to the teacher and turn in the completed table.
