COURSE MAINTENANCE
Ben Kozlovsky
ring the preventative maintenance schedule for the approaching the spring and summer season of golf The most important item we have to schedule is the aerification of the greens I know that just the mere mention of the word “aerification” will make most golfers cringe Aerification of the greens is an extremely important cultural practice that helps the overall health of the turf Aerification achieves three important objectives It will reduce soil compaction, it allows air and gas exchange to occur in the soil and it reduces thatch accumulation When soil becomes compacted, the air pockets on which the roots depend are crushed, and the roots are essentially left gasping for air Without oxygen, the turf will become weaker and will eventually lead to weak areas covered in algae
The Aerification process creates more air space in the soil and promotes deeper rooting In most cases, it’s done by removing ½-inch cores from the compacted soil, allowing for an infusion of air and water The spaces are then filled with sand that helps the soil retain air space and makes it easier for roots to grow downward
Thatch is an accumulation of dead stems, leaf blades and roots A little organic matter makes for a resilient green, but too much invites diseases and insects Aerification and topdressing can prevent thatch buildup Aerification is one of the best ways to reduce an existing thatch layer and prevent one from becoming established
Aerification is an integral part of successful golf course management program and I hope that the aerifications scheduled for this year will be viewed as a short-term disruption that has long-term benefits for the course Thank you for your patience with the Agronomy Team as we tackle the upcoming season
Thank You,
