COURSE MAINTENANCE
John Freeman
June and July are when the turf on greens, tees, and fairways become tough Ed keeps all cutting units ground and adjusts for the best possible cut quality As we recover from greens aerification, we see that the Calcium Sulfate is working as anticipated Nutrients chemically bound to the soil are being released, and the plant is taking it up As a result, growth rates are accelerated We are careful to increase plant growth regulator rates due to naturally occurring bronzing Our biggest hurdle is controlling the off-type grass growth in the Tif Eagle on the Member Course In normal conditions, we can see the puffed-up areas of off type Now, we see scalping of the off type in many places on the Member Course We will constantly top dress lightly to raise the canopy in the scalped areas Some of the worst areas are on the center-left #1, middle #6, most of #11, and most of #15

We will continue to verticut fairways on both courses into mid-July We also plan to continue to solid tine aerify all fairways on both courses We will focus on high-traffic areas with additional fertilization and aerification The weaker areas on both courses are from grass other than the TifSport, which was initially planted The weakest turf is likely to be common Bermuda brought in as sod after one of the many Houston Opens Additional fertilizer is applied every 3-4 weeks throughout the growing season to enhance turf quality Growth regulators are applied every 21 days to shorten the distance between the nodes and leaf length

Summertime irrigation management should be better than in 2022 Last year at this time, our effluent water transfer pump went down The drought had also been going on since the end of March We did receive a new transfer pump allowing us to get back to a normal irrigation practice Our goal during this time of year is to irrigate moderately early in the week and then pull cycles down to enhance playing conditions from Thursday through Sunday The goal is Firm and Fast with no mud on the ball
Tournament Course bunker sand update: The Arkansas sand company has been sold to new owners We are in line for 100 tons as soon as production is available
