For the second year in a row, BBVA ranked ESDi as the top university to study Design in Catalonia. National and international designers began their creative careers at our university.

We have over 14,000m2 of facilities equipped with cutting-edge technology. There are 3 Self-Labs and 1 Help-Lab featuring: Additive Manufacturing (AM); 3D printing; Virtual Reality (VR) in partnership with HP and digitalisation of design and production processes.

Officially-recognised degrees, with scope for obtaining a double degree: Degree in Design & Bachelor in Smart Design. ESDi is the only centre in Spain that imparts six study itineraries in Design.

In 1989, several public administrations, and business and company groups in the sector came together to strengthen Catalan industry by professionalising the work of designers. ESDi and the Textile Design Foundation (FUNDIT) were the fruits of these efforts. The aim of the two entities was to give university Design graduates the skills, know-how and competitiveness they needed to make their mark on the world.

Nevertheless, the foundation of the school, the launch of its degrees and its association with the Ramon Llull University (URL) were not the only steps taken. Another key measure was building on Sabadell’s long track record in the textile industry by forging an alliance with the Fashion Arts and Techniques School (EATM), a leader in the field of Design Education in Barcelona. This spirit has continued to guide ESDi’s path. Since then, the School has incorporated an officially-recognised University Degree in Design, progressively built up six study itineraries in Design, added Master’s Degrees and Postgraduate courses, and internationalised its activities. The year 2015 marked the inception of the School for Advanced Professional Training (EFPA), tasked with imparting Higher Degree Formative Cycles not only in Design but also in kindred fields. That year also saw the birth of another innovation , the Bachelor in Smart Design, a program for the connected, tech-savvy, innovative designers of the future. Given that technology must go hand-inglove with human qualities, the Bachelor in Digital Humanities came soon after to meet the needs of a world in which analysis, understanding, and projection are slowly breaking down the barriers between the Humanities and Science.

Going beyond differences among the various disciplines, the curriculum articulates three kinds of knowledge: (1) theoretical subjects linked to the Arts and Humanities fields; (2) instrumental subjects in the technology field; (3) projects fostering one’s skills as an all-round professional. The training is complemented by classroom projects in collaboration with national and international firms, workshops with outside designers, and the chance of joining ESDi’s research teams.

An experience that begins with an initial idea and that goes beyond the product launch, involving several rounds of prototypes and testing.

At each stage along the way, a product designer needs to grasp not only what manufacturers or clients want, but also what end-users’ needs are, how to ‘connect’ with them, and what options new technologies open up. As well as a thorough knowledge of materials, uses/features, and key values such as ergonomics and sustainability, we add tools that let you turn all your products into ‘smart’ ones, products that are interactive, functional, and adaptive. When you live in a space or you circulate through it, your perception does not end with how the space is decorated or its permeability to movement. The setting also elicits feelings, producing an emotional and physical impact. Giving form to this impact is the job of an interior designer, who defines the uses and habitability of spaces and tries to make the people who live in them, buy in them, or pass through them feel at ease with the setting. Here, we not only mean physical spaces but also new settings

that draw on technological advances. Such spaces range from those based on a virtual presence and telework to ones in which Industry 4.0 breathes life into its creations. The identity of all new spaces needs to be carefully crafted by the gifted minds and hands of interior designers. Designing spaces (whether they be public, private, domestic, commercial, or corporate) involves dialogue between architecture and product design. The aim is always to deliver the best possible user experience.

Screens connect us with the wider world and have become key to leisure, access to information, and even learning. Nevertheless, given the sheer diversity and abundance of audiovisual offerings, we need aesthetics and narratives that allow the designer to transmit one’s own artistic language, and to ensure the medium evolves and spawns new opportunities. Audiovisual language constantly re-invents cinema and television,

but it is not confined to those media. It also embraces: interactive ‘installations’; the creation of digital settings; web and mobile interfaces; Virtual Reality (VR); holography. These options show that experimenting is not limited to form and content but also extends to experience. Each creator decides how to convey his vision to the eyes and ears of others.

We are keenly aware that the design cycle does not end with a product, garment, or piece of graphic art. It is more like an ever-widening ripple that makes the designer’s ideas and/or feelings reach ever more people. That is why Design Management is a tool that draws on other disciplines, exploiting opportunities and tackling dissemination and business challenges while furnishing cross-cutting

knowledge. This multidisciplinary approach is used to turn out well-rounded designers. Designers have a great deal to offer as members of multidisciplinary teams. By their very nature, designers are visionaries who have a knack for finding scope for improvement and innovation and exploiting it. Design incorporates both tradition and innovation, but, above all, it embraces the world. Being a global designer means having historical information and knowing how things currently stand in the main international hubs of each discipline. This means being able to draw on other cultures and societies in order to grasp Design’s many facets. We believe that studying abroad is personally enriching and opens the door to new tools and forms of self-expression. ESDi has over 50 exchange agreements with centres in Latin America, The Middle East, and Europe. These agreements cover both the Erasmus+ and Freemoving exchange programmes. Our international projection is strongly reflected in our Degree, Postgraduate courses and Master’s Degrees and is rooted in the global circulation of knowledge, academic excellence, and the training of professionals who can apply their know-how and skills anywhere in the world. In the Smart Design field, we work in the ‘here and now’ to create a digital, mobile, interactive world in which technology and design join forces to improve people’s lives.

This involves delivering more efficient services, more versatile products, and production processes that take greater account of the need for sustainability. These strands are the foundations of a new kind of design that allows one to experiment with novel ways of doing things and thinking, and above all, in opening up new horizons when it comes to user experience. To exploit the transformational power of technology to the fullest, our Bachelor in Smart Design (one of ESDi’s in-house programmes) can be taken on its own or together with the official Degree in Design to complement an ESDi designer’s creative techniques and analytical skills with training in the cutting-edge technology that is so much in demand today and that will be key in tomorrow’s world.

campus 4.0 In addition to our open-plan classrooms and spaces such as workshops, theory labs, photography and video studios, we have also gone the high-tech route throughout the campus to meet new educational aims and meet market demands in the Design field.

To these ends, we have incorporated three ‘self labs’ and a ‘help-lab’, which are fully equipped with cuttingedge technology for: Immersive Virtual Reality and Holography; 3D Printing; Additive Manufacturing; Design Digitalisation; Textile-making. The methodology for the Bachelor in Smart Design gives students lots of scope for experiment and selflearning with these technological tools. This helps students hone their creative and professional skills.

3 SELF LABS Self and 3D Printing Lab Together with the 3D Printer and Laser Academic Lab, students can carry out 3D printing jobs on highperformance Work Stations and 3D printers. The printer is a da Vinci 1.0 Pro 3D with 1,75 mm filaments and a printing volume of 200x200x200 mm. Virtual Lab. Partnership with HP In addition to the existing technology classrooms equipped with software for the digital processing of images, the Virtual Lab lets students experiment with the latest technologies found in the Virtual Design and Augmented Reality fields. Furthermore, the Lab is also a pilot Design R&D Centre. As its name suggests, it focuses on the nexus between the Arts, The Humanities, Social Sciences, and Technology. Founded in 1968, EATM merged with ESDi in 2000. The initiative to set up EATM came from a group of textile and garment manufacturers who wanted to train professionals in the fashion design field. Right from its first qualification (recognised by Southampton University), EATM has diversified its offerings both in terms of the subjects studied and how they are imparted (intensive workshops, Higher Degree studies, Post-Graduate studies). Yet throughout its long history, EATM has stayed true to its founding mission, which is none other than to provide the very best in professional training.

The analysis and forecasting of trends, styling, and fashion marketing have become key to the industry’s future, whether at fashion shows or elsewhere. Projects One of the ways ESDi strives to put its students’ knowledge into action is through the University’s collaboration agreements with companies and other entities. While such firms and entities are not necessarily drawn from the design industry, the sector serves to boost their activities. That said, we know that the business world is not the only way of developing design products or of exploring and underpinning students’ learning. That is why we also support research to foster the intellectual and creative growth of students and faculty alike.

Job Center Our links with students do not end when they graduate. On the contrary, we do our utmost to support them in their careers and to help them project their work abroad. Our commitment to our alumni is a lifelong one. The Job Centre serves both students and alumni, helping them get a job and give impulse to their careers. It offers companies a helping hand in their quest for design talent. To these ends, we act as a nexus between ESDi students and professionals on the one hand, and companies on the other. This is a win-win situation given that these firms need to both recruit designers for their teams and hire them for special one-off projects.

HP Ink, HP Enterprise, Autodesk, Fusion, Launch Forth, Technicolor, Unreal Engine, VIVE, Barcelona Mobility Lab, Computer Vision Center

The Harley-Davidson company provided ESDi with material in the form of mannequins and garments (mostly discontinued). The firm gave the School’s Fashion Design students free rein to use this material, customise it, or re-purpose it as they saw fit to give the garments a new life. The resulting projects were exhibited at a private showing held by HarleyDavidson at the Barcelona and Madrid Trade Fairs.

As a member of the HP Education League, ESDi takes part in the HP Mars Home Planet project, in which Virtual Reality (VR) techniques are used to create spaces and products for Mankind’s future development on The Red Planet.

RIS3 Sabadell City Council, Sabadell Foundation for Industry European Project in which ESDi designs and builds prototypes bearing on Smart Cities. This covers such things as: street furniture and buildings that can interact with people; designing traffic lights to improve mobility; energy-saving; making areas pleasanter; fostering better ‘urban mobility’ solutions (cutting air pollution; achieving greater environmental sustainability).

SMART Cluster ESDi has been part of the SMART Cluster since 2017, a research and development programme for Smart Products and Smart Design. The cluster forms part of the EUREKA international competitive-ness network. ESDi’s role is to forge strategic alliances to develop prototypes and innovative projects.

2 The Sabadell Brand Sabadell City Council ESDi students and faculty carried out a research project on building the Sabadell brand by analysing the image citizens have of their city. The results were: positioning proposals; a logo; a slogan, all of which were based on certain key concepts.

3 ESDiColor_LAB ESDi Color_LAB is Spain’s representative in the international organisation Intercolor, which has 16 member countries drawn from Asia, Europe, and the US. ESDi is the only academic entity among Intercolor’s members and thus makes a big contribution when it comes to conceptualisation. Socio-semiotics is used to analyse the latest social trends. The findings feed into the creation of colour charts for the textile, fashion, and design industries.

Train FGC — Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya [Catalan National Railways] The FGC has two separate rail networks: the BarcelonaVallès network, and the Llobregat-Anoia network. The Barcelona-Vallès network is the one that links Barcelona to Sabadell, which is where ESDi main facilities are.

Bus The Sabadell city bus network (which goes under the acronym T.U.S) offers services throughout the city around the clock. Bus lines F5, L5 and L55 have stops next to ESDi.

Take the S2 Barcelona-Vallès line and get off at Sabadell Plaça Major station, which is just a 10-minute walk from ESDi’s campus and Sabadell’s city centre.

RENFE Cercanías [RENFE Regional Rail Services] RENFE’s Barcelona-based Regional Rail Services link Catalonia’s main cities, including Sabadell. Take a train on the R4 line, direction Terrassa or Manresa, and get off at the Sabadell Centre station. ESDi’s campus and the Sabadell city centre are just a 5-minute walk from the station. *Bear in mind that Sabadell is in Zone 2, which means you will need a Zone 2 ticket (valid for the Underground, Buses, Nit Bus (Night Buses), FGC (Catalan National Railways) and RENFE (Spanish State Railway).
