Lawrenceville Summer Scholars Program
WELCOME PROSPECTIVE SUMMER SCHOLARS!
WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT THE GROWING ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUMMER 2016 This summer, you will have the chance to accelerate your academic work, experience new fields of study, and discover new areas of interest through half-day or full-day enrollment. In addition, residential scholars will be able to experience life as a boarding student where you will deepen your friendships not only in the Houses, but also by engaging in both physical and social activities across campus. Residential scholars will also have the chance to travel on the weekends to places like the nearby town of Princeton, and take full day trips to Philadelphia or New York City. We are delighted to be offering these exciting opportunities through the Lawrenceville Summer Scholars program and look forward to seeing you this summer! *Please note that the Residential Program is only open to students who are under the age of 18 during the program.
Why Summer Scholars? OUR MISSION
The goal of Lawrenceville Summer Scholars is to provide an educational summer program that produces innovative leaders, breakthrough thinkers, and imaginative problem solvers. We challenge students to learn in powerful new ways, engage in active inquiry, and develop a life-long commitment to personal, environmental, and community responsibility.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Our limited enrollment classes are small. Our low student-toteacher ratio ensures that each summer scholar receives the individual attention one deserves to flourish in a safe and supportive environment. Our staff encourages scholars to learn and grow, to trust in their abilities, and to believe in themselves so that all reach their fullest potential. From the moment you enter a class at Lawrenceville, the experience is hands-on. We’ll challenge you, guide you, and encourage you to experiment. You’ll engage in self-paced, blended learning and will leave the program with relevant 21st century skills. With a balance of class time and outdoor fun, where you’ll think critically, problem-solve, collaborate and socialize, you’ll discover what you love doing.

FACULTY AND STAFF
The program’s faculty and staff are experts in their disciplines and are some of the best teachers in the region. Our faculty and teaching interns come from a number of academic communities. Some faculty are staff at The Lawrenceville School, and others from private and public secondary schools and graduate studies programs. Each has in common a passion for their work and are committed to our summer scholars. They are passionate about their subject areas and are excited about helping students learn about themselves and the course content.
HARKNESS TEACHING
Since 1936, Lawrenceville has been educating students using the Harkness method that allows students and teacher to sit together at an oval table to engage in group discussion. This configuration reflects a philosophy of education that values the expression of ideas in a comfortable setting and challenges students to gain personal and academic confidence as they explore a variety of student perspectives. Central to the success of such pedagogy is small class size, and an expectation of student preparation that allows them to take an active part in their own learning.
pride, responsibility, and respect for the contributions of others. Staff members live in each House and serve as housemasters, interns and prefects. Residential Life staff work together to plan and execute community and bonding-focused House activities for the students to engage in together. Residential Life staff also perform evening supervision on a rotating basis.
LEARN HOW TO LEARN
The Summer Scholars Program grants students tremendous freedom to define their own programs of study. With over 30 courses to choose from, scholars learn how to learn by developing their critical thinking skills to become attuned to beneficial study habits – both universal and personal.
RESIDENTIAL LIFE
Lawrenceville’s House System is unique among independent schools in America and has been an important part of Lawrentian life for more than two centuries. Each House is a small group within the larger School community that fosters

Program Options RESIDENTIAL SCHOLAR
Join us for a three or six week stay as a Residential Scholar. You will “chart your own course” by selecting both a morning and an afternoon class to actively engage in during your stay. In addition to the Lawrenceville Summer Scholars program’s focus on learning, the residential program offers a variety of recreational activities in the afternoon hours, every evening, and on the weekends. These activities are intended to provide students with fresh air, exercise, social interaction, a bonding-focused community experience, and lots of fun! Activities are designed for a variety of participant interests and opportunities to develop new passions.
ACCELERATED MATH (8AM - 12PM) Accelerated math courses run for six-weeks and are equivalent to a full school year of curriculum. Students in accelerated math will study along side of a certified teacher and their peers to complete 120 classroom hours in their respective subject. Due to the rigorous nature of the accelerated math courses, students taking these classes may not participate in the other program options Lawrenceville Summer Scholars has to offer. In order to complete these courses and be awarded a grade, a student must be present for the entire 120 hours.
FULL DAY OPTIONS (8AM – 4PM) Enroll in a morning and an afternoon course and spend a full day immersed in collaborative study at Lawrenceville Summer Scholars. Full day students will begin their day at 8AM in their morning course until 11AM. From 11AM – 12PM, students will experience traditional Lawrenceville House activities and School Meetings followed by lunch in Irwin Dining Center. Afternoon classes run from 1PM – 4PM. Full day students looking to experience a taste of life as a boarding student at The Lawrenceville school should also consider becoming a Residential Scholar.
HALF DAY OPTIONS (8AM - 1PM) All non-math morning courses are offered as half day options for students. Half day students will take their course from 8AM – 11AM. From 11AM – 12PM, students will experience traditional Lawrenceville House activities and School Meetings followed by lunch in Irwin Dining Center. Half day students will be dismissed at 1PM. Looking to spend more time at Lawrenceville? Consider full day options or the opportunity to be a Residential Scholar.
