EMINAR Seminar for Investors on
SMALL HYDRO POWER REFURBISHING Pamplona, 23 October 2008
Presentation The European Union includes small hydro electric power as one of the technologies that should be promoted to contribute to the objective that 20% of its primary energy consumption should come from renewable sources by 2020, thus reducing its energy dependency and greenhouse gas emissions related to the generation of electricity.
The SHAPES Project (Small Hydro Action for the Promotion of Efficient Solutions) fits into this context. It was set up under the 6th R&D Framework Programme with the aim of fostering cooperation between different agents in the field of research and the market, to favour the penetration of small hydro power in the EU and in developing countries. The project is driven by a consortium of ten entities –associations, technology centres and companies- from Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, the United Kingdom, Poland, Lithuania, India and Spain, ACCIONA being the only representative of the last-named country. SHAPES is partly funded by the EC, DG-TREN and is coordinated by the European Small Hydropower Association (ESHA).
This Seminar for Investors on SMALL HYDRO POWER REFURBISHING corresponds to one of the lines of work of the SHAPES Project: the promotion of the refurbishing of old small hydro plants to improve their efficiency and optimise their operation, bearing in mind that 70% of the small hydro plants currently existing in Europe are over 40 years of age. The Seminar is targeted to potential investors in hydropower.
S
EMINAR Objectives • To give an overall vision of the possibilities for refurbishing of existing small hydro power plants. • To learn about practical experiences and cases. • To encourage the investment in the existing/old/abandoned sites offering still a good potential.
Targeted to • Potential investors in renewal/refurbishing projects for small hydro power plants. • Companies and professionals from the small hydro sector who would like to learn about the business opportunities offered by the refurbishing of these plants. • Any agents (researchers, engineers, regulators, etc.) who are interested in learning about the development opportunities for small hydro power through the updating of existing plants.
