ights are essential to reflect the beauty of every area in your home. The suitable lighting makes you feel more relaxed and comfortable in the place you are sitting, whether you’re reading, studying, writing, or doing something. In other words, lights have an impact on the human being as it can make everything look much better or much worse. So how do we know which colour is suitable for which room? Generally, we have three types of lighting. General lighting which is used to lighten the whole room, task lighting which is used to help you do your work and is used in reading areas mostly. Lastly, is the accent lighting which is used to highlight a particular area; for example, which has a piece of art. Here’re some tips to choosing the perfect lighting. STEP 1: WHAT IS THE ROOM FUNCTION? Choosing the perfect lays entirely on the function of the room so go around your home, figure out where you want to put the lights and for what reason. If you’re working on
your living room, then try to put general lighting but then add an accent lighting to highlight a piece of art you own. Highlighting a specific area in the living room can attract visitors to concentrate on that particular area or that particular piece of work. Moving on to your bedroom, one of the essentials is a task lighting on your nightstand to help you read or work in your room more easily. For bathrooms, you will also need a task light to lighten up the mirror. These are some suggestions but you can always change them if you’re room’s function is different. STEP 2: CHOOSE THE RIGHT BULBS We have different types of bulbs as we’ve mentioned in one of our articles before, incandescent, compact fluorescent bulbs, LEDs, and halogen. However, let’s focus on brightness and light appearance in this article. Of course, the brightness of the bulbs depend on the size of the room and the colour of your walls. Generally, people use soft white or warm white colour for bedrooms and living rooms making them more cosy. Bright white or cool white are used mostly in kitchens, bathrooms and
garages to make the feel more energetic. The last type is called “daylight” and its suitable for bathrooms too or basements and it helps you in reading or working or even putting makeup on. STEP 3: PICK YOUR FIXTURES Here are some types of fixtures and where to use them: 1. Ceiling mount fixtures: These fixtures are ideal in hallways, bedrooms, task areas or stairways. 2. Chandeliers: They’re used for general lighting in most cases therefore they’re best suitable in dining rooms or bedrooms. 3. Wall-mounted fixtures: This type can be used for general, task or accent lighting depending on where you place them in a room. 4. Pendant lighting: These lights hang from the ceiling so they work best over dining tables, countertops or any other work area.
