WEAVING NICOSIA: a manifesto Year 05 | DS 22 Tutor : Nasser Golzari & Yara Sharif The traditional textile making in Nicosia includes the production of fabrics and lace-making are among the dying trades of Old Nicosia. This an earnest call for protection and celebration of this fragile industry of cultural heritage of Nicosia and most importantly , to weave together both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots together , that has been segregated right after the 1974’s war. This manifesto intervenes the spilled void , the left-over , abandoned and contentious space inside of the city . The process of the growth of cities evolves in relativity of time, and the division of Nicosia that happened across the city has opened up new voids. The proposal will stitch together the spilled voids within the boundaries of the Buffer Zone and both the north and south continents of Cyprus, while addressing the new typology of factory, which is no mere shell that contain industrial function of textile making. It will be a typology that binds and interlinked all the functions of the spaces together , and spreads out to the main accessible areas and become a place of gathering and a celebration of culture.
The complex acts as the stage of Cypriots textile production where the spaces will stage and choreograph the whole production of textile making , from fibre collection to dyeing the threads and weaving the Fabrics of Memory. The Cypriots that are forced to leave their house after the war , are attached to their memories of home . Fabrics of Memory that will be weaved here with patterns of personal narrative stories of the Cypriots . Derived from the method of loci, items that need to memorise are to pinned to visual cue , and in Weaving Nicosia : a manifesto, the woven fabric will act as the mnemonic device involving a visual map of one’s memory and home.

PROGRAMMATIC ASSEMBLAGE
T here are abandoned and contentious spaces inside of the city which have their own complex nature. For example, the physical boundaries established by the UN; the Buf fer Zone, can be rendered as vague, because it spans beyond the physical bar rier. T he process of g rowth of cities evolves in relativity of time, over the span of 40 yea r s, after the division of the city happened , right in the middle of the city, splitted it into two. T he process has opened up new voids; the spilled voids. T he nature of the project is divided into a few main components of textile factor y, that intervene the spilled void. THE 9 PROGRAMMES AND COMPONENTS 1- FIBRE COLLECTION 2- COTTON MILL 3- COMBING 4- FLOATING POND 5-HANGING GARDEN 6- WEAVING THEATRE 7- FABRIC BAZAAR 8- OLD BESS MACHINE

THE PORTRAYAL OF DARKNESS The site is focussed in Palestine, and Gaza specifically, a context with complex geopolitical situation and unique condition. A thorough study and extended discussion on the narratives of the local on the issues on site is tested out through architecture drawings and models to map out the new possibilities or the extreme condition and absurdity of the place.
LIGHTS OF GAZA Year 05 | DS 22 Tutor : Nasser Golzari & Yara Sharif
22
This first project questions and critique on the issues on the frequent electricity shortage in Gaza and its effects on the locals in their everyday life. The proposal of the work was constructed to reimagine the notion of darkness in the everyday life of the Gazans.
Darkness always associated with hollow, horror, the grotesque, feeling trapped, And even serenity, and triggering people’s imagination, where everything is heightens and amplified.
EXPERIENCE THE DARKNESS Darkness is always been experienced through light, where light shine on the subject matter and creates shadows or the periphery, when the imaginations tarted to formulate itself under the min’s eye, light can help to found our way in the dark, to relaz, to feel safe and to see familiar place.

Earth is a world as cruel as those who call it home. The world’s vicious expansions are out of control. Their brutal struggles scar the land even as it carves them in its image .
DORIATH enchanted (future) forest Year 04 | DS 10 Tutor: Toby Burgess & Arthur Mamou-Mani
26
By 2090, it is predicted that 80% of Amazon will disappear due to the combined impacts of logging, drought, forest fires, desertification, agricultural and industrial expansions ; less than one-fifth of the Amazon now remains . In addition to mass extinctions of flora and fauna , many indigenous communities have vanished . The soils had been depleted from the logging activities , fires to clear land , farming and pasturing animals. Much of the steep land has eroded and soils had washed away.
The proposal started with the idea of ‘Avatar’ , an analogy of forest warriors to save the tropical forest. ‘Doriath’ will be a manifesto to rescue and regenerate the forest, constructing the forest of the future . It is a meliorism approach to the forest through genetic engineering and improvement; provide protection from livestock damage and cultivating plant life to shape a city . It is a forest city that is more resilient and has adaptive ecology that encourages active participation by people. The analogy points to a future city that works as a mature ecosystem, a city that converts its linear and wasteful systems into closed metabolic loops to reach a relatively stable, resilient and symbiotic state.

Tensegrity structure or also known as tensional integrity, a portmanteau term that was coined by Buckminster Fuller in the 1960s. It is a structural principle which is based on the use of detached components in compression inside a net of continuous tension. It is also known as “floating compression”, a term that was promoted by Kenneth Snelson. Each compressed members such as struts or bars do not touch among another and the prestressed tensioned members , tendons or cables. The study of tensegrity structure started through geometric remodeling the tensegrity model using digital softwares, to understand the deployability of the system . The basic form of tensegrity is being explored through addition of struts in the cell modules . The basic cell module is then are combined according to geometry tessellation. They were applied on regular surface and also irregular surface, while maintaining the structural frequency and mesh tension. The study diagrams and images are on the next page are explored through the usage of grasshopper to control the parameters and test the digital application.

TENSEGRITY WALL-FLOWER Installation project proposed for Buro Happold Ltd. , London Year 04 | DS 10 Tutor: Toby Burgess & Arthur Mamou-Mani
By using basic cell module of 3 struts, the tensional components were explored both using cables and fabric . The fabric helps in creating enclosures and more aesthetically pleasing in installation. Tensegrity structures and components are incredibly interesting when they take on a shape in which all the forces are balanced. The idea of incorporating tensegrity structures into the installation for Buro Happold are to manifest the integrity between stability and flexible of the system in to the ‘scupltures’. The Tensegrity Wallflower is designed responding to privacy and weather through manipulating the enclosures of every cells of tensegrity components.
