Tensegrity structure or also known as tensional integrity, a portmanteau term that was coined by Buckminster Fuller in the 1960s. It is a structural principle which is based on the use of detached components in compression inside a net of continuous tension. It is also known as “floating compression”, a term that was promoted by Kenneth Snelson. Each compressed members such as struts or bars do not touch among another and the prestressed tensioned members, tendons or cables. Using basic tensegrity module of 3 struts, the tensional components were explored both using cables and fabric. The fabric helps in creating enclosures whilst maintaining its tensional property.

The Chair exerts Yap Ah Loy’s – Kuala Lumpur Founder Father – social status, and his membership in the elite class in Kuala Lumpur. The particular chair in the Yap Ah Loy’s portrait was expressed quite ornamented on the front parts, wide seat and with armrest that symbolizes a seat of power higher than other people in the room. The design is a take on the characteristics that were studied from the Chair that become the throne to the people of higher power in an earlier establishment of Kuala Lumpur. The intent of the design of the chair is to be ornamental, and intended to be the focus of the viewer’s attention to reflect the status and power of the owner.

This manifesto intervenes the spilled void, the left-over, abandoned and contentious space inside of the city. The process of the growth of cities evolves in relativity of time, and the division of the city happened across the city has opened up new voids. The complex acts as the stage of Cypriots textile production where the spaces will stage and choreograph the whole production of textile making, from fibre collection to dyeing the threads and weaving the Fabrics of Memory.

Narrative Section Fabrics of Memory that will be weaved here with patterns of personal narrative stories of the Cypriots. Derived from the method of loci, items that need to memorise are to pinned to visual cue, and in Weaving Nicosia : a manifesto, the woven fabric will act as the mnemonic device involving a visual map of one’s memory and home.

Arthur Mamou-Mani & Toby Burgess Design Studio 10 University of Westminster Proposal 2015

The proposal started with the idea of ‘Avatar’, an analogy of forest warriors to save the tropical forest. ‘Doriath’ will be a manifesto to rescue and regenerate the forest, constructing the forest of the future . It is a meliorism approach to the forest through genetic engineering and improvement; provide protection from livestock damage and cultivating plant life to shape a city. It is a forest city that is more resilient and has adaptive ecology that encourages active participation by people. The analogy points to a future city that works as a mature ecosystem, a city that converts its linear and wasteful systems into closed metabolic loops to reach a relatively stable, resilient and symbiotic state.
