PROJECTING CHANGE, NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND SPRING 2017

To provide public space the retaining walls between the houses will act as a barrier, creating a courtyard. This proposal also maintains the urban grid of the existing streets in the neighborhood to allow people to continue community interactions.

THE PROJECT In collab. with: Newport Restoration Society Rhode Island School Of Design Van Beuren Foundation The historical neighborhood in Newport, RI called Point is facing the threat of rising sea levels. There have been more frequent storm surges and extreme floods within the past few years. The Memory Trace proposal intends to protect the memory of the Point neighborhood and introduces possible ways of living within the changing conditions of the surrounding environment. We are inspired by the Henri Bergson’s idea of the separation between the memory and physical matter, “memory remains even when the matter has been destroyed”. Using the process of casting to create a physical imprint of an object, this proposal traces the houses so that they serve as a placeholder of the past for the future while simultaneously sustaining the essence of the community.
