HH Couple Resurrect Community Tennis Court!
HH residents Rob and Barbara Powell have a huge fight on their hands. When they bought their home at 14 Braestar Court in 2002, they and 118 other home owners in the area had included on their title part ownership of a community tennis court. Each year, all of those 118 owners are legally required to pay a maintenance fee to a committee run by locals for the court’s upkeep. The suburb developers Fletcher’s Building just presumed that locals would volunteer to oversee maintenance,
but the opposite happened. Fewer and fewer paid their sub and the courts threatened to fall into disrepair. Enter local residents Rob and Barbara to the rescue. They formalized an agreement with the 118 owners, put in place an annual fee of $30 and formed the Braestar Court Association. “Today, 2019, everyone is paying” says Rob “but most of the 118 owners are not interested in tennis. Only 10 or so turn up to our AGM. People are overloaded with debt, work long hours, and they have no time for recreation. One more responsibility would break the camel’s back, so to speak. Barbara and I have hung in there, and the court is now in top condition and everyone is paying. Young blood is coming through with new ideas. One idea is to turn part

of the area around the court into a community garden! Wow! That would be amazing.” Says Barbara “Already, it’s a perfect place for community events, birthdays, and family functions. There are outdoor tables and chairs. But adding a community garden would be fabulous.” And what of the future? It’s looking bright as a new generation of residents recognise the value of having a place where families can play safely, learn tennis tips from a local expert and parents and couples alike can settle in with a quiet drink with nibbles for an afternoons catch up on life in general. A New Year’s get together in early 2020 is planned and everyone is invited. There will be ice cream, a BBQ ,and games for the children. The area also boasts a new Neighbourhood support coordinator who is supporting the associations desire to have this unique space become a community hub. SIGNS THAT SHOW YOU ARE NOT GOING TO SUCCEED IN LIFE (Part 2) In this issue of our paper, I am going to detail the four of the seven signs!
stone towards success. Don’t let failure deter you from wanting to achieve your dreams.
Eighty percent of the success is in SHOWING UP! — Woody Allen
Sign 2: You are a people pleaser
Let’s face it, no one wants to be a failure in life. Everyone wants to be a success. The good news is that success is within everyone’s grasp! Yet, studies show that eighty percent of us fail to muster the courage to even show up. If we feed this habit of not showing up, be sure of one thing — success is never going to come our way no matter how hard we strive and struggle for it. In the last issue of OHHCNews, I shared 3 of the 7 signs. In this issue I share the other 4!
Sign 1: You are scared of failure For successful people, ‘failure’ is just a lesson about what not to do again. They take risks to find out what works and what doesn’t. Elon Musk (who started Spacx in 2002, and Tesla Motors in 2003) is the perfect example of a risk taker. The man is never afraid to take a risk, even when the stakes were high. Everyone can learn from his book and his story — failure is only a stepping

‘If you live for people’s acceptance you will die from their rejection.’ — Lecrae When you set your own goals, and go for them, you won’t be able to please everyone else around you. Because pleasing other people so that they accept us takes time and effort. And time and effort is exactly what you need to achieve your own goals! So quite trying to please everyone.
disappointment come, they give up. You see, success comes from riding the failures and disappointments like a surfer rides a wave, and learning from them. Successful people have a ‘I am not giving up no matter what blocks my path’ attitude. Successful people EXPECT failure and disappointment. This attitude makes them winners.
Sign 3: You like to leave things on chance Successful people realise that goals are not achieved by chance. They require planning, strategy, and execution. A lot of people can set goals and strategise, but they fail to execute. Successful people do all three consistently over a long period of time.
Sign 4: It’s not the effort, but the attitude that matters Unsuccessful people might work hard for a while, but when failure and

GOAL SETTING. THE KEY TO A COMPELLING FUTURE! (Part 2) In September/ October issue, Tony gave us 3 keys to goal setting. Here are the last two!
you’re going to feel frustrated, bored and pissed off, and you’re going to start looking at other things to blame.”
1. Don’t stop after you’ve achieved your goal.
Robbins says he has seen this happen countless times with businesspeople he has coached. “So many guys who sold their companies and made $200 million dollars, half a billion dollars, a billion dollars—they only lasted a few years before they had to get back in the game,” Robbins says. “The business made them grow, made them learn, made them expand, made them contribute.”
It’s simple: You should never stop setting goals. “Hundreds of people have achieved massive goals,” Robbins says. “And then their brain went, Is this all there is? I worked so hard for this and it’s not the same as I thought it would be. That is success without fulfilment, and that’s the ultimate failure.”
2. Don’t worry about not achieving your goals.
Take the example above. Let’s say you achieved your goal of making $100,000 for your business. You’ll feel a burst of pride and an uptick in energy right when you hit that goal. But then what? Without another goal to pursue and a daily sense of meaning, you will feel lost.
“What makes us feel alive is progress—it’s growth, it’s aliveness,” Robbins says. “We grow or we die. That’s what life is.”
“When you’re heading toward a goal and you’re about to achieve it, you have to fit in the next ones,” Robbins says. “Because otherwise, there will be a drop in energy.”
But just remember: Growth takes different forms for different people. Try to figure out what form of growth is most valuable to you, and go from there.
Without something to pursue or to look forward to, you run the risk of your life feeling stagnant. “We all need a compelling future,” Robbins says. “We all need something that we’re going for that makes us feel alive. If you don’t,
“You don’t just want to grow,” he says. “You want to grow so you can have an extraordinary life on your terms - a life that’s fulfilling to you.”
What matters isn’t that the goal is achieved, Robbins says, but rather that you grow as a person on the path to achieving it.

MARY MCINTOSH – STILL WORKING AT 92 YEARS OLD This month Mary McIntosh will be celebrating her 92nd birthday, and incredibly she is still working at McIntosh Dental every week! This year marks the 32nd anniversary of the dental practice, and Mary has been there since day one. Being the oldest surviving member of the Corban family, Mary is part of the very foundations of Henderson. Longevity seems to run in the family – her Aunt passed away just two months short of her 104th birthday. Some of Mary’s earliest memories are helping out as a child in the winery to put the tops on the bottles of wine, and following the grape pickers to pick up the offcuts – for which she was paid one penny per bucket of offcuts. After 45 years’ working at the winery Mary “retired”, but this wasn’t to last long. Dr Alex McIntosh, her oldest of three sons, was opening a new dental practice on Lincoln Road and thought she would make the perfect receptionist. So at the age of 62 Mary began her new career. Opening McIntosh Dental wasn’t a straight-forward process. Because the area was residential, Mary remembers having to approach all of the neighbours of 43 Lincoln Road and obtain their written agreement to the practice opening. One neighbour, who was strongly against the idea, took a little more convincing than the others that the noise of the dental drills wouldn’t be a problem! McIntosh Dental opened in 1987 with one dentist, one nurse, and Mary on reception. Her bubbly personality always helped to distract the patients from their appointments. She still recalls the day she was called to fill in as dental nurse to work chairside – put on the spot with the dental suction and trying to figure out which instrument was which! Brought to you by the BATCHELOR. Your local Real Estate Agent.
And sure enough, her days on reception weren’t to last long. Mary embarked on yet another career by studying to be a Dental Assistant, and worked chairside for several years. When she was in her 70’s she moved full-circle back to reception and mastered the computer system. For the last eight years she has provided invaluable administrative support, and although she now comes into the practice just one day per week she continues to be relied upon for the banking, shopping and the many weekly ad-hoc tasks that crop up. Mary has no plans to slow down anytime soon – in fact she has just renewed her driver’s license. Every Saturday morning you can find her at the Oratia Farmers Market at Hoani Waititi Marae selling her “world famous in West Auckland” homemade pickles, jams, chutneys and sauces. She also makes up lucky dips for both children and adults for her stand, and donates all of the profits to her church. She makes all of her preserves from scratch, admitting this can be a time-consuming hobby but often peels or chops fruit and vegetables in front of the TV. She says she has worked all of her life and just can’t see herself sitting around doing nothing. And Mary still enjoys her Thursdays at McIntosh Dental. She loves spending time with the ‘young people’ (as she calls the team), and they make her laugh with their stories. She has always felt that they treat her as an equal and it’s a wonderful place to work. Mary is a dearly treasured member of the McIntosh team and we look forward to helping her celebrate her 92nd birthday.

Ever met a person with a burning passion for monarch butterflies? If not, them meet Julia Hodges! Says Julia, explaining how she stumbled into this passion, “One day I purchased a swan plant at Mitre 10 and I was sitting on my deck and out of nowhere this absolutely beautiful monarch butterfly came and landed on it. I could not believe how it began to eat the plant with such ferocity! Right before my eyes, it was literally devouring my whole swan plant! Not wanting the butterfly to depart, I quickly hopped in my car and went to Mitre 10 to get some more swan plants!” Say Julia laughing loudly “I now don’t buy handbags and shoes like most ladies – I buy swan plants”. She continues her story “This same butterfly came and went, and all I had to do was supply its food. They must have some homing device in their brains to know where to come back to, like a homing pigeon. To cut a long story short, one day this gorgeous amazing butterfly laid some eggs on one plant, and then layed some more on another. Their eggs are white when first layed and absolutely tiny. They eventually turn black and ever so slowly they hatch and the caterpillar emerges. These guys eat HUGE amounts of food,
many times their body weight. Ever so slowly, after they have gotten big and fat and long, they turn in a chrysalis. Eventually, the butterfly emerges! The whole life cycle is absolutely stunning. Not only are the caterpillars unbelievably beautiful, but the butterflies are just out of this world exquisite to look at. I now have lots of them and name them after my friends! Wasps are their natural enemies so most often I cover my swan plants with a mosquito net to
keep my darlings safe! My advice, do something that will give you so much pleasure – go to Mitre 10 and purchase some swan plants and watch what happens!”

West Auckland has a hidden wartime history hiding in plain site Most interestingly, the area adjacent to the railway tunnel in Swanson, (running parallel to Pooks road) was, in fact, a highly classified fuel storage facility. It was created to house back-up fuel, should an invasion force destroy fuel tanks located at Whenuapai. It also was responsible for fuelling planes at the airbase.
By Jim Birchall In Te Atatu peninsula, Gun emplacements were erected to house anti-aircraft guns designed to counter the predicted (but never eventuated) Japanese offensive into the Waitemata harbour & to protect military targets like the western airfields at Hobsonville. Hobonsonville air base was completed in 1920 and served as a point of operations for the NZRAF during wartime. Dummy aircraft, constructed from plywood were positioned amongst farmland to

the north-west in an attempt of subterfuge against Japanese bomber aircraft. The buildings that today sit as Avondale college, played its part in the war-time effort as a U.S Navy hospital, and the nearby racecourse was used as a camp for U.S army and allied personnel. Even Titirangi was engineered with tank traps along Scenic drive, ostensibly to counter any advance from the west coast, while Kumeu was proposed as the site from an anti-tank ditch that stretched to Redvale.

THE SCRAP CAR INDUSTRY, and how we’re doing our bit to recycle used cars. Cash 4 Cars Company is part of a large industry that handles thousands of end of life scrap cars each year. It is an industry that is set for growth, Thanks to the ageing stock of vehicles on and off the New Zealand Roads. Roughly 30% of New Zealand’s vehicles are 20 years or older, The aftermath of a used car bubble in the mid to late 90’s. From March 2017 to March 2018 alone, 158,000 cars reached the end of the road nationwide and this is set to only rise. Vehicles that have been written off by insurance companies go through auction houses such as Turners Auctions which have facilities throughout New Zealand. Cash 4 Cars Company customers are made up of local businesses and community members who are looking for a quick, hassle free sale of their unwanted car.
What happens to your scrap car? Car dismantlers take the majority of end of life vehicles, they strip them for all useable and recyclable parts then send the remaining car body to the metal smelters. A large amount of reclaimed metal is exported to manufacturing countries like China and Indonesia. New Zealand is home to hundreds of Car Dismantlers who can process thousands of broken cars a year. Everything from doors to engine mounts to be kept and sold, some wreckers export auto parts to countries as far as Dubai, Malaysia and Japan. The bulk of auto parts however are sold to local customers, including Mechanics, Panel beaters and DIYers. Before the car is dismantled their fuel tanks are drained along with other fluids and coolants. Vehicles are then sent to have their valuable parts removed, everything
Page 12
gets re-used, sometimes more than once. Rubber is recycled, Glass can end up in concrete, Seat foam can become carpet underlay and copper wire to be melted down and reused. The materials reclaimed can turn up again in many forms from toasters to power extension leads. Some of the 150,000 plus cars coming off New Zealand’s roads are dormant, this means the owner has not relicensed the vehicle for over 12 months and they are automatically deregistered by the New Zealand Transport agency. Some are left to rust away on farms and rural blocks while others are dumped in back yards, but this is a minority, in an industry that effectively deals with one of New Zealand’s least-talked about waste disposal industries. Cash 4 Car Company’s mission is to help everyday people dispose of their unwanted scrap car in a safe and environmentally friendly way while getting the best price possible.

CHILDREN LEARN YOUNG AT TOP INDIAN RESTAURANT IN HENDERSON
The owners of Indian Flavours restaurant in downtown Henderson are committed to teaching their children how to run the restaurant as a very young age. But Aaditya (11) and Aaniya (10) love it! They come in after school each day and have been trained by Mum and Dad how to take phone orders for takeaways, work the eftpos machine, and relate to customers in a friendly but professional way. They are taught how to smile, lay tables, clean table, and a whole range of service skills. Says Dad and head chef Manu “In India we like our whole family to be involved in the family business. This leads to a feeling of unity and oneness. It makes our family very tight and close. Plus, when family members are employees, they can be completely trusted. I am not worried about money being stolen or anything like that. My kids (Manu is laughing now) are also bi-lingual and don’t have the strong Indian accent and head wobble that me and my wife have, so they are better at relating with English speaking customers than we are! My kids are my own live in translation team! I also like them coming into the restaurant to work straight after school so that they are not at home alone. We insist that they do their homework first before starting work in the restaurant.
Aaditya, Dad and top Indian chef Manu, Mum Sunita, and Aaniya
I don’t pay them as such, but instead I buy them things that they say they want. (smiling widely) I often tell them that by working in the restaurant they are working for themselves because this is their inheritance when their Mum and Dad die!” Even at 10 and 11, they “get it “so they work with smile! TRICKY SALE! Success Story!
5/48 McCleod Road My daughter owned a property in Te Atatu which was very run down and in need of a complete restoration. There w ere several complications w ith the sale of this property including w orking w ith finance companies, lawyers, banks, and the Companies office. I have dealt w ith a lot of real estate agents in the past but Julian is by far the most professional and skillful w e’ve met. We really needed him for this sale as it was not a simple real estate transaction. He navigated us through the very tricky sales process and kept us fully informed at every stage.
We ended up getting a better sales price than w e’d expected which was really a bonus. So if you have CCC issues, compliance issues, or tricky stuff to deal w ith, I thoroughly recommend using Julian. He’ll navigate you through to a successful ending, just as he did for us.
