How to find the perimeter and area of a shape.

Perimeter The perimeter of a shape is the measurement of the outside of the shape. It is the same for all the shapes. You measure the sides and add them up and the total you get is the perimeter. 5.4 cm

4.5 cm 4.5 This shape has a perimeter of 19.8 centimeters because you are adding all its sides together so you add 5.4+ 5.4+ 4.5+ 4.5 = 19.8

5.4

Area of a parallelogram and rectangle The formula for a rectangle of a parallelogram and rectangle are the same. You measure the base, then the height, and then multiply those two numbers together. Remember, measure the height from the highest point of the shape!

The height is 3

This is a rectangle. The height is 3 cm because for example each square is 1cm. And the base is 2cm, so you do 2x3=6 is area.

To make it easy, lets say that each square is 1cm. The base ( bottom) of the shape is 2 squares over here.

Area of a triangle The formula to find the area of a triangle is much different than a rectangle or parallelogram. To find the area of a triangle you base x height divided by 2.

This time I am going to be different. I will do the actual measurement. I will draw lines to show you what I mean.

the height of this triangle is 6cm. The base of this triangle is 7.5. You need to do 6 x 7.5 = 45.0 now you have to divide 45.0 by 2 = 22.5

the height is 6cm

the base is 7.5

My new learning I had new how to find the perimeter because I learned it in my old school. But area was a total new learning for me. I had heard of it but never learned this. In Mrs. Cole始s class we studied area and now I know how to find the area of three shapes.
