CEO’s Message Dear patrons, As we continue to strive towards our goals for the year, there might be days when time seems to come to a slow crawl, when we feel worn down by the daily grind. In the words of Pablo Picasso, “Art washes away from the soul, the dust of everyday life”. This quarter’s programmes seek to do just that—through laughter, quiet introspection, and exploring new perspectives. A Tapestry of Sacred Music 2016 returns in April with full-day itineraries that start from as early as dawn till dusk. In the quietude of morning meditation sessions, the infectious energy of Afro-Brazilian Candomblé music and dance, the entrancing outpouring of mugham by Azerbaijani father-daughter duo Alim and Fargana Qasimov, among others, we delve into the ways people seek out the divine through music and art, to find inner peace and restore the soul. At Esplanade, we are filled with excitement over Super Japan – Japanese Festival of Arts. Held this May, presentations as diverse as Okinawan folk music, jazz, contemporary expressions of butoh, the shamisen and kabuki, and J-pop highlight different aspects of the Japanese cultural identity. With these, we hope to bring you a deeper understanding of a culture that many of us today experience through our love for its food, products and lifestyle. Flipside invites you to venture into the lighter, wackier side of the arts, to relieve stress through mirth. And if you love theatre, Cameron Mackintosh’s musical Les Misérables makes its way to our shores for a limited run, while the third season of National Theatre Live brings you fresh screenings of plays performed by a stellar line-up of internationally renowned actors. From end-June onwards, look for our new monthly highlights brochure that will replace this quarterly publication, which you can find at SISTIC booths around Singapore. There is still so much to share with you. We hope that this quarter’s programmes not only give you something to look forward to but also bring you new encounters that rekindle that fire in your heart.

Jean Ng and Joavien Ng 31 Mar–2 Apr, Thu–Sat 8pm (1hr 30mins, no intermission)

A dream world where logic and reason do not exist. Moral-less, rule-less, borderless and timeless. Intrusions summoned, intrusions uninvited. A collective journey, alone. Our dreams lie in a world beyond common sense, beyond morality, beyond objectivity. They are rich, powerful, sensual, mysterious, disturbing, tragic, hilarious – a sort of madness. Are they revelations of the past or tellers of the future? Are they the unconscious trapped in slumber, screaming to be heard? Or are they mere accidental side effects of random neural impulses? Intrusions is an exciting collaboration between Jean Ng and Joavien Ng who bring to the work their rich backgrounds in theatre and dance. Advisory: Mature themes. Recommended for audiences age 16 and above. There will be a post-show dialogue with the artists on 1 Apr.

Singapore Symphony Orchestra Okko Kamu, conductor Wong Chiyan, piano
Well-known internationally and back in Singapore by popular demand, Padmabushan Sudha Ragunathan has made a name for herself with her mellifluous and lilting voice, masterly presentation and wide repertoire.
Singapore Symphony Orchestra
Pianist Wong Chiyan makes his SSO debut in the technically demanding Second Piano Concerto, an early work completed when Prokofiev was still a student at the St Petersburg Conservatory. A contemporary critic foresaw greatness for its composer, though, he wrote, the work “left listeners frozen with fright, hair standing on end”. Principal Guest Conductor Okko Kamu closes the concert with Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, a work which breaks away from the formal traditions of the classical era.

A singer transfixed in religious ecstasy, belting out long, improvised melismas against a small backup chorus with accompanying harmonium and percussion instruments— this is the proverbial image of qawwali, the musical expression of Sufi poetry in South Asia. Qawwali is a Sufi devotional form known as the “path of the heart”. It originated from ancient Islamic poetry and expresses the intense thoughts and feelings of the great Sufi mystics. Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad ensemble’s qawwali music has its roots in one of qawwali’s oldest schools. The group sings in multiple languages including Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Hindi, Farsi, Arabic, Bengali, and Purbi—a unique tradition of qawwali that can be traced back over 700 years.

Gospel music has a 150-year history that emerged from the spirituals of African slaves and Sunday school choirs. It formed the backdrop of the American civil rights movement in the ’60s and later influenced popular music genres and the vocal styles of countless pop and R&B artists. A premiere collective of vocalists and singers, Glory Gospel Singers (GGS) of New York is a passionate ensemble of some of the world’s most talented gospel singers. For one night only, the award-winning group presents a glorious repertoire of gospel classics from the ’60s and ’70s, performing songs from Aretha Franklin’s Amazing Grace album and the tunes of Edwin Hawkins and other stalwarts of the tradition.

Mugham, or magam in some cultures, is a classical Azerbaijani folk music form that carries the cultural and spiritual values of its people. It was from attending his many performances of mughams and popular bardic songs sung by ashiqs (early Eastern singer-songwriters) that prominent singer Alim Qasimov’s daughter, Fargana, discovered her flair for the music. And it is through this sacred form that the father-daughter duo exemplifies the explosive artistic energy that results when a powerful musical model ignites the spark of young talent. Both mugham and ashiq songs are featured in this evening’s performance. The Qasimovs are accompanied by a quartet of young musicians whose talents were shaped both by formal music education and immersion in the Azerbaijani oral tradition.

A Question Mark for History is a crosstalk production specially created for students and is an adaptation of It Could Have Been, a 2015 co-production by Sin Feng Xiangsheng Society and Esplanade. The production is written and directed by Cultural Medallion recipient Han Lao Da. It will be in the form of a dramatised performance that provides a snapshot of Singapore’s history and uses elements unique to crosstalk— humour, wit, sarcasm, and comedic moments of the Chinese language. Through laughter, students will be able to reflect and re-think Singapore’s history. Brought to you by Sin Feng Xiangsheng Society In collaboration with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay
Pooja Nansi is getting married, and planning a wedding in Singapore is making her think hard about where she came from. As with all migration stories, hers bears the weight of travellers past, a complex cultural map of her parents’ move from India to Singapore, and the border-crossing love stories of her grandparents. At the same time, her life is a constant, often very funny struggle with finding a place for her culturally mixed voice within Singapore’s idiosyncratic ethnic rubric. This one woman show, interspersed with Pooja’s trademark mix of poetry and storytelling, is an attempt to find a place for her family's messy sprawl of stories in orderly Singapore. All About My Mother explores the parent we least want to grow up to be like but can’t help seeing ourselves become. Here, we try to understand the matriarch, to get under her skin but not make her angry; to get under her skin and use it as a blanket; to get under her skin, press our cheek against it and love her. This piece was conceived from a conversation between a granddaughter and a grandfather, about the different women around them. From opposite sides of the sofa and life, they recollect and imagine. There will be some singing, some dancing, some gossiping, and some bringing back the dead as we figure out what we are and who we’re made of. "Imprisonment is as irrevocable as death." George Bernard Shaw Dark Room follows the lives of men housed together in a five-by-five-metre cell, 23 hours a day, every day, until their release. This original work, based on true accounts, explores the codes and regulations of society “on the inside”. It charts the prison experience from pre-trial to imprisonment, and the reintegration into society as “returning citizens”. If “prison is the punishment that keeps on taking”, Dark Room gives voice to the incarcerated by staging their stories and making their experiences visible to a wider audience. There will be a post-show dialogue after each performance. The development of this second iteration titled Dark Room is supported by Centre 42's Basement Workshop programme.

Not much has been written about the relationship about Sahir Ludhianvi, the celebrated Urdu poet and the equally legendary Punjabi author Amrita Pritam. Ek Mulaqaat talks about the intensity of their relationship. The story is suffused with literary references, nazms (a form of Urdu poetry) and poetry of the legendary duo. It is a story of two hours in their lives and ends with a great twist. The play speaks of a unique relationship— unrequited love was never so poetic. In today’s times of frantic messaging and consummation, here is a relationship that is nourished in dignity and pathos. Ek Mulaqaat is a musical tribute to the poetic genius of Sahir Ludhianvi and Amrita Pritam. Enjoy the passion! Where there is life, there is death, and where there is death, there is life. In Dancing with Death, award-winning choreographer Pichet Klunchun creates a space in-between these intertwined worlds where the material and immaterial meet, and where body and spirit exist in a state of kinetic freedom. Inspired by his experience at a folk festival where death is celebrated, Klunchun creates a new physical vocabulary marrying folk expression with his contemporary choreographic system based on classical Thai dance. Using this intricate movement language, six dancers, including Klunchun, navigate cyclical paths in a lyrical meditation, negotiating the layers of human desire, fear, joy and spirituality. On a sand-dusted stage set against a majestic wall of fossil reliefs, eight butoh dancers from the internationally renowned Sankai Juku enter into a sublime dialogue with gravity. Through the graceful arcs they trace across the sand, a philosophical visual poem unfolds. Following 2012’s Tobari – As if in An Inexhaustible Flux and 2014’s Kagemi: Beyond the Metaphors of Mirrors, the company returns with its Southeast Asian premiere of Meguri: Teeming Sea, Tranquil Land, the latest creation by its acclaimed founder and artistic director Ushio Amagatsu. Featuring a set design inspired by fossilised Paleozoic sea lilies, Meguri delves intimately into the themes of circulation and rotation. Amagatsu and his senior dancers Semimaru, Toru Iwashita and Sho Takeuchi—the three of whom are featured prominently in selected scenes—draw the audience deep into their texturally rich and metaphorical world of dance. Meguri is co-produced by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay (Singapore), Théâtre de la Ville (France), Kitakyushu Performing Arts Center (Japan), and Sankai Juku (Japan).

And even if you’re not a Japanophile, the range of programmes and activities featured over the festival might well turn you into one. Excited yet? The question is,
ARE YOU READY TO BE A SUPER TROOPER? Well, before the fun starts, here is a cheat sheet of 10 Japanese terms to know that will supercharge your festival experience!
BUTOH Founded as a movement by Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno, butoh was created as a departure from western dance and traditional Japanese performing art forms. This striking modern dance form has varied approaches that are grounded in the philosophy of movement. Some are highly theatrical while others are closer to dance and more abstract in form. The mark of a great butoh dancer is his ability to transform his body and the space around him.

Schubert's two piano trios take their place amongst the towering masterpieces in the chamber music repertoire. Sentimental and soulful, triumphant and dramatic, they represent the zenith of the young composer's expansive output, at the twilight of his tragically short life. The Piano Trio in B-flat showcases Romantic expression at its finest, with a balance of spirit and charm. The Piano Trio in E-flat is even more ambitious, with the structural scale of a symphony that, at the same time, retains the delicate exquisiteness of a chamber work. This concert by Kelvin Chan, Vladimir Choi and Brandon Voo marks their debut as an ensemble—a soirée not to be missed.

A young dancer who has undergone traditional training feels dislocated within her artistic practice in her home country. A new expatriate wife detached from her immediate reality draws inspiration from the writings of strangers past and present, and tries to reinvent herself. A teacher seeks to save a school that she had inherited, but finds her quest leaves her more lonely than ever. A meditative interdisciplinary production that charts the collisions of people seeking to alter their destinies, Ghost Writer grapples with the question of how independent our lives can be. After a sold-out run that closed to standing ovations at Huayi – Chinese Festival of Arts in 2015, the heartachingly beautiful Travel with Mum returns to move us once again. Based on a true story, Travel with Mum is beautifully told through drama and live original music. A 74-year-old man builds a tricycle and brings his 99-yearold mother on a journey across China. Starting at the northernmost part of China in Heilongjiang, they set off for Tibet on a 900-day journey that spans 30,000 kilometres. His mum, who has toiled all her life for her family, has never travelled out of her rural hometown. Determined to fulfill his mum’s wish to see the beauty of the world while she still can, the man brings her travelling on a rickety tricycle, pedalling through rural villages and fast-paced cities, through valleys and over hills. As they ride on, he discovers that staying by his mum’s side is the greatest reward he can give the both of them.

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands but seeing with new eyes.” – Marcel Proust
Garden City: 2011-2016 is an ongoing series of work based on the same name which Singapore is affectionately known as. The journey to reexamine the meaning of a garden city began when Ng once imagined a local tree in her old neighbourhood as a Christmas tree. The resulting works are stirringly beautiful images of Singapore captured at moments that are rarely seen, framed by delicately composed angles that reflect how the artist perceives Singapore as an urban city within a garden. Dialog
Zulkifle Mahmod 9 Apr–10 Jul Tunnel We experience spaces through sight and sound. The aural architecture of the tunnel is alive and changes with the audience; each person transmits sounds, which are then displaced (in sound) in fractions of a millisecond. Sound travels from section to section, and is reverberated through the entire space, forming a borderless territory that is a distorted and warped sum of all its parts. Dialog is a sound installation that challenges the ideas of territory, control, transmission and how we listen to the world. This exhibition comprises two looped compositions of interactive sounds triggered from solenoids (electromagnets that generate a controlled magnetic field) hitting on copper pipes of different lengths and thicknesses. The second composition will be played from 20 Jun till 10 Jul. In conjunction with

A Problem of How to Fly Att Poomtangon THAILAND
15 Apr–3 Jul Concourse This installation speaks of the being of the here and now. Our minds are flooded with information from birth, which comes with the social stigmas and preconceptions of right and wrong. We are limited by our knowledge and confined by our cultures, traditions, societies, laws and philosophies. If we can just let them all go, believe in ourselves, spread our wings and empower ourselves with confidence, we will be able to fly. Poomtangon reimagines the atmosphere in a vast lotus pond, where the endless body of water, coloured by the lotus leaves and bright flowers, meets the blue skies of soaring birds, signifying freedom, strength and belief.
