About Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay Esplanade is Singapore’s national performing arts centre. It presents a year-round line-up of more than 3,000 performances, making the arts accessible for everyone through a diverse calendar of ticketed and non-ticketed programmes featuring dance, music, theatre, the visual arts and more, making the arts accessible for everyone. The centre works in close partnership with local, regional and international artists to develop artistic capabilities and content, push artistic boundaries and engage audiences. It also develops technical capabilities for the industry nationally. This architectural icon, with its distinctive twin shells, houses world-class performance spaces complemented by a comprehensive range of professional support services. Its two main venues are the 1,600-seat Concert Hall and a Theatre with a capacity of 2,000. In May 2015, Esplanade was choen as one of SG Heart Map’s 50 special places. CEO’s Message Dear patrons, Fresh is the wind of change that blows into our lives at the start of the year and fills us with imagination and hope. As we set our course into 2016 with new goals and a new mindset, this quarter’s offerings at Esplanade will keep the energy going, through revelry and a stellar line-up of artists, many of whom are titans in their respective fields. Kicking off the year on a high note are two of Singapore’s own music legends, Ramli Sarip and M Nasir, performing together at Esplanade for the fi st time. Celebrating her three-decadelong career, Malaysia’s “Queen of Jazz” Sheila Majid returns to the stage with new songs, while the world famous Israel Philharmonic Orchestra makes its way here with a special 80th anniversary concert. This season of Huayi – Chinese Festival of Arts celebrates fresh perspectives and new beginnings, with highlights including returning director HuangYing’s satirical take on Macbeth; GuoGuang Opera Company’s part-opera part-theatre production about the development of the Peking operatic form; and Taiwanese choreographer Huang Yi’s poignant duet with his robotic creation, KUKA, in an ode to dance and technology. And for theatre lovers who enjoyed Beijing People’s Art Theatre’s Teahouse last year, catch them again in March as they bring us yet another critically acclaimed adaptation, this time of Chinese theatre production Savage Land, directed by Chen Xinyi. With the SG50 celebrations recently behind us, and so much going on around the world, we take pause to be thankful for all that we have. There is still so much to share with you at Esplanade, and we hope that you will continue to join us throughout the year as we look to the arts to reinvigorate our spirits and carry us through the year. This dazzling performance brings a night of jazz at the Esplanade Concert Hall with classics such as Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, Louis Prima’s Sing, Sing, Sing and George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.
Local pianist Ryan Chow, a graduate of Singapore Management University and Manhattan School of Music, presents a masterful concoction of works from the early retrospectivism of Mendelssohn and Grieg which culminated in the mature neoclassical works of the interwar period. A distinct trend which infiltrates early modernism in music, the programme looks back to the Classical and Baroque guised in a modern sound palette. Brought to you by MS Works

In this preview of the SSO’s European tour programme, rising young violinist Yang Tianwa returns with Mendelssohn’s wellloved masterpiece, the Violin Concerto in E minor. The second half features the delightful Suite from Strauss’ popular opera Der Rosenkavalier as well as La Valse, Ravel’s vivid depiction of nineteenth century Vienna when the waltz was king.

Indulge in a chill-out Sunday afternoon with the orchestra as they present a concert of popular Mando-pop songs that many of us are familiar with. From hits by the multi-talented Jay Chou to our very own homegrown singer Stefanie Sun, this concert will have you singing along to the melodies like a mini karaoke session, classical style!
By boldly replacing the typical pre-established plot and narrative with a string of seemingly disparate choral pieces hailing from various genres and styles, we hope to catch our audience by surprise and delight them at each unexpected turn of song and mood. Written by BIG (Zulfadli Rashid) and directed by Rizman Putra, The Chronicles of One and Zero: Kancil is a fantastical pastiche of our perceived culture and heritage set in today’s digital and virtual world. It unravels hidden stories from the Malay fable Hikayat Sang Kancil (The Chronicles of Sang Kancil), retold through syair and puisi (forms of traditional Malay poetry), body projection mapping and animated sequences.

After all, he had once remarked, "Lesser artists borrow, greater artists steal." One of the most innovative composers in the 20th century, Igor Stravinsky was famously known for the seminal compositions written during his period of intense musical creation and activity in France. Witness the debut concert by the New Epoch Orchestral (N.E.O.) Ensemble presenting the neoclassical works in an all-Stravinsky programme conducted by Seow Yibin, and featuring pianist Lim Yan as soloist in the Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments.

Theatre Studio entrance Free First presented at Urban Art Space (Columbus, USA) in 2014, Cornering a Hare is a durational performance art piece that examines how ritual, through repetition and duration, plays a part in identity formation. This anthropomorphic creature pulls from the hare’s representations throughout pop-culture and art history—trickster, fertility and the bearer of Spring, among others. It is unclear if he is cornered as a punishment or as prey. He confronts the passer-by with a quizzical gaze, hoping they can deliver an answer to his fate.

Following a series of events caused by her stepmother, the story ends in tragedy with Raden Mas sacrificing her life to save her father. The dance production Doggy Style was born out of a fascination for dogs.The choreography transposes the athletic poetry of spontaneous canine movements onto human bodies and minds. Characters and relationships are key to TNS’ signature works—indigenous, intercultural, character-driven and issue-based. From Gansu Dance Drama and Opera Ensemble comes the award-winning masterpiece of Chinese dance drama, Silk Road. Since their first performance in 1979, the troupe has been to no less than 20 countries and districts and has received numerous awards and recognitions for their performance of Silk Road. Silk Road is inspired by the magnificent Dunhuang frescoes in the Gansu province of China. Set in the Tang Dynasty of ancient China, it tells the story of Ying Niang and her father, painter Master Zhang and how their lives changed when they met a Persian businessman, Yunus. It is a touching story of friendship and peace between Chinese people and foreign merchants during the Tang Dynasty. Through the ancient, beautiful, innovative and unique style of dance, the show portrays the magnificent cultural splendours of the Tang Dynasty, presenting ancient China to its modern audiences with energy and flair. Enter a world of imaginative urban fables and short stories told through music as Singapore singer-songwriter Dawn Wong presents her debut album Marco Lopo, featuring her signature blend of elegant, soulful jazz and melodic Mandarin pop, tinged with childlike wonder and whimsy.

Since her television debut on Taiwan’s Super Idol 2 as part of the duo Babyface, Fang Wu has been working on her music. She was invited to the Taiwan Super Slippa music festival in 2014, and went on to tour the country, eventually performing at the Taipei Arena. Her words have resonated with city dwellers, and her song Accumulated Loneliness—one of the theme songs to the television drama My Sunshine—paints the solitude of urban life while showing us hope at the same time.
Dawn Wong began her musical journey on Project Superstar 2 in 2007, and went on to impress renowned musicians such as Sandee Chan on Taiwan’s Super Idol 5 singing competition. In 2012, Wong released her debut eponymous EP to positive reviews, and it was nominated for Best Local Music Work at the Freshmusic awards in 2013. Now an in-demand artist, Wong marks a new chapter with the launch of Marco Lopo.

An unfortunate playground fight between children leads to a cordial living-room meeting with the parents…that turns into an all-out war. After an overwhelmingly received debut in Hong Kong, Dionysus Contemporary Theatre brings its Cantonese adaptation of French playwright Yasmina Reza’s Olivier and Tony Award-winning play, God of Carnage to Singapore. Two couples meet to resolve a playground dispute involving their 11-year-old sons, one of whom is now missing his front teeth. They try to reach an amiable reconciliation, but what begins as a civilised discussion soon descends into a chaotic clash of differences, with all four becoming casualties in a battle that spirals out of control. Frequently read but seldom heard, well-loved Chinese literary classics are given a new dimension in this musical presentation by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra. The love between Jia Bao Yu and Lin Dai Yu in Dream of the Red Chamber; the strategic warfare between Zhou Yu and Zhu Ge Liang in Romance of the Three Kingdoms; the sharpwitted Sun Wu Kong in Journey to the West; and the righteous gathering of men in Water Margin — the essence of these well-loved Chinese classics are masterfully presented and keenly felt through evocative Chinese orchestral music. This concert features works by one of China’s most influential composers Zhao Ji Ping and his compatriot Wang Li Ping, Hong Kong composer Chen Ning-chi and a co-composition by Singapore composer Law Wai Lun and Hong Kong’s Lincoln Lo. Conceptualised by Cultural Medallion recipient Tsung Yeh, music director and conductor of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, this concert features renowned soprano Wang Qing Shuang, tenor Li Lie Gang, the Tanjong Katong Secondary School and Alumni Choir led by Nelson Kwei, and MediaCorp artiste Guo Liang as narrator. Enjoy an afternoon of celebrated springtime classics. Come alive to endearing melodies as ESO Symphony Orchestra performs popular tunes through history, from the classical compositions of Vivaldi and Strauss, to evergreen medleys from The Sound of Music, and a tribute to Elvis Presley.
The third installment of the highly successful LAND with NO SUN audio-film concert series, Dance of the Earth continues where the story left off. A third world war in the distant future had devastated the Earth's surface and forced humanity to rebuild their civilization in the heavens.
Formed in 2011, ESO Symphony Orchestra has over 70 members from all walks of life. Led by Music Director Lester Kong, the group has worked to bring classical music to communities around Singapore.
A girl born in the sky-cities starts to wonder if life still existed on the world below and makes the journey down in search of answers. What she discovers is beyond her wildest imagination. Dance of the Earth is an immersive audiofilm experience which combines video projections with live music composed by Tze Toh and performed by the TO ensemble and its Contemporary Orchestra. What does she tell us beyond the limits she faced in her short life? Inspired by Shakespeare’s character, this work delves into the workings of a mind, intricate and complex, encompassing too the landscape of a soul inextricably linked to that of a prominent other, Hamlet. Beyond the politics of sex and gender and the cycles of oppression that pervade history, Ophelia reflects too on the grey areas of our humanity; the deep-seated desires, motives and actions that account for the tragedies that keep the human race in a constant state of drowning.

Led by director Mrs Heng-Yap Shing Min, the Yio Chu Kang Secondary School Choir celebrates the beauty of the four seasons, nature, love and youth, presenting a repertoire of songs ranging from 13th century medieval rounds, to lush Romantic part songs, Asian children songs, choral song cycles and familiar Broadway favourites.
The Fuhua Secondary School Military Band is made up of a group of secondary school music-makers with passion and love. Since its inception in 1999, the band has received numerous accolades from national and international events. Notably, it achieved a Gold award in the Singapore Youth Festival Band Presentation for two consecutive years in 2013 and 2014.
Since its commencement, the choir has performed across various platforms: at the National Day Observance Ceremony in 2011; in the 11th Singapore-Hong Kong Exchange Programme Farewell Ceremony in 2012 and at Esplanade in 2014. In 2011, the Choir achieved its first Gold with Honours award and a Certificate of Distinction in 2013 and 2015. Songs for the night include Zhou Long’s Four Seasons, Edward Elgar’s The Snow, Kelly Tan’s The Wind and Singing in the Rain with music by Nacio Herb Brown and arrangement by Mark Hayes.

As long-time friends and fellow theatre artists, Claire Wong and Noorlinah Mohamed would often meet and talk about their mothers and the complexities of living—and not living —with them. One mother is Cantonese-speaking and impetuous; the other speaks Malay and is quietly stubborn. Both are smart, sharp and strong. Both are wonderful cooks. First staged in 2006 and revisited in 2009, Recalling Mother in 2016 is an on-going conversation that has evolved along with Claire’s and Noorlinah’s relationship with their respective mothers over the years. As they and their mothers grow older, the bond between parent and child has changed. The caretaker has become the dependant. What happens when the body begins to age? What does love mean to a mind that is beginning to fade? And so, the conversations continue. Poignant, moving and funny, Recalling Mother celebrates the joys and challenges of motherhood—and daughterhood.

Formed in 1972, the St. Margaret’s Secondary School Symphonic Band (SMSB) started as an outdoor marching band. Today, it has grown to a full-size symphonic wind orchestra under the steadfast guidance of band director, Alvin Seville and assistant band director, Ngiam Xing Hao.
Rhapsody XII is the 12th instalment of the Victoria School Choir’s biennial concert, since its inception in 1990.
Highlights of this concert include Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber, arranged by Johan de Meij, Spartacus by Jan Van der Roost and How to Train Your Dragon by John Powell, arranged by Sean O’Loughlin.
This year's concert is held in conjunction with Victoria School's 140th Anniversary, as well as the Victoria School Choir's 25th anniversary, and will be one where they will reminisce their journey over the years. The Victoria School Choir presents a tapestry of songs ranging from the renaissance to contemporary works as well as some of their familiar favourite tunes and iconic songs from their repertoire.

Our dreams lie in a world beyond common sense, beyond morality, beyond objectivity. They are rich, powerful, sensual, mysterious, disturbing, tragic, hilarious—a sort of madness. Are they revelations of the past or tellers of the future? Are they the unconscious trapped in slumber, screaming to be heard? Or are they mere accidental side effects of random neural impulses? Object Object is a whimsical visual dictionary of Chinese idioms. “Whale fall” is a phenomenon whereby a whale’s carcass sinks into the Bathyal or Abyssal zone on the seabed. Over a 50–90 year period, it forms and supports complex, localised, deep-sea ecosystems within the environment of the ocean floor. In their Oceans tells of this phenomenon through references to the seas—from whales and the depths of the oceans, to the stones and scenes of Jeju Island. Drawings, knitted sculptures, a soundscape, objects and murals depict a narrative of nostalgia and poignancy, addressing love and loss in the context of our anthropocentric society. This is a collaboration between award-winning Chelsea College of Art & Design (London) MA graduates Ashley Yeo and Monica So-Young Moon.

Over the Horizon is a site-specific installation dealing primarily with plastic pollution. Made from plastic waste collected from Singapore’s coastlines, it explores this global issue of non-biodegradable waste and its effects on nature, and highlights the interdependency of individual activities. Artist/curator/researcher Wang Ruobing’s practice often explores how nature/ environment is a source of disjuncture and a reflection of people’s social, political and cultural struggles.

For safety reasons, all bags and items brought in to performing venues are subject to security checks. Bulky items and plastic carriers must be deposited at baggage carts outside the venue.
• Flowers and Gifts for Artists
For safety and security reasons, these are not accepted in the Theatre or Concert Hall. In the Studio spaces, presentation of flowe s and gifts is subject to the artist’s consent. The same security checks as above apply.
Photography and Filming Visitors are allowed to photograph, film or ta e videos of the public areas only for personal use. Commercial use and public exhibition of the footage or materials without prior written consent is prohibited. Photography, videography or any form of recording (including that of mobile phones) is strictly prohibited within our performance venues at all times. Esplanade reserves the right to refuse admission to patrons entering with recording devices. Self-service lockers for cameras and video cameras are available for use outside the venues. Theatre, with a capacity of 2,000, is designed in an intimate horseshoe shape. It houses Singapore’s largest performing stage and easily adapts to performances of different scales.
