It’s open to all, but is especially geared towards same sex couples and will incude around 25 stalls icluding everything from photographers to cake makers. THOMAS COOK & POSH HELP KIDS The guys at Thomas Cook have raised nearly £1600 for the Variety Club with a star-studded fundraising bash at the Posh ground. The Variety Club helps out seriously ill, disadvantaged kids and the money from this night will be going towards two new children’s wards. Posh player Aaron Mclean was a special guest along with Face of ESP Kerry Bates. We sent our Paparazzi crew along for the night, so if you were there then you might just be in next month’s ESP!

STATUS HAIR SALON GOES ALL THE WAY Congratulations to Status hair salon in Yaxley for making it all the way to the finals of The L’Oréal Professional Trophy – the hairdressing ‘Oscars.’ The salon, which is thought to be the smallest to ever make it this far, beat off competition from around 10,000 rivals. As owner John Haymes told ESP – “It’s a bit like the Faeroe Islands qualifying for the World Cup!” All salons entering had to submit a 10x8 photograph; however, unlike salons up and down the country which spent thousands on their entry, the guys at Status managed it on a few hundred quid! The ace up their sleeve was a long time friend of John the salon owner, the Vogue fashion photographer Mark Curtis, who said – “It’s always fantastic when nice things happen to good people.” We couldn’t agree more.

SPRINGFIELDS EXPANSION ON TRACK The £11 million expansion of Springfields shopping outlet in Spalding is almost complete! The expansion, which will see loads of new shops and a 43-room Travelodge hotel coming to the complex, will also create well over 100 new jobs. The bosses at Springfields are keeping details of the new shops under wraps but have promised ‘high quality national retailers,’ to join existing stores like M&S, Pilot and Game and the Festival Gardens, designed by people such as Charlie Dimmock. The expansion will mean that even more visitors (currently 2 million a year) will head to Spalding and give the town a real boost.

TAKE THAT, TAKE THE MARRIOTT Take That have gone from strength to strength recently, with chart topping albums and a sell out tour. If you didn’t make it to London to see the guys live then head to the Marriott hotel at Lynchwood, Peterborough on April 18 for a tribute night with Take That 2. These guys are so good they’ve actually been asked to perform with Take That at the O2 arena! RHYTHM FESTIVAL ROCKS If you’re bored of Reading and Glastonbury or just fancy going to a different festival this year, then why not make it the Rhythm Festival. It takes place just outside Bedford and mainly features music like the Saw Doctors and Jefferson Starship as well as Chas and Dave (Oh yes!) and an act called Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams (worth it just for the name), as well as top Blues, Folk and Roots DJ’s. There are all sorts of mad events going off on the side too and the website even promises luxury loos – maybe that’s why it’s been nominated in five categories at the UK Festival Awards 2007. P.KAI ARE GHD EXPERTS Last month we told you about Kai Wan from P.Kai Hair at Serpentine Green being selected as a finalist for the ghd Expert Awards in the category of the Innovation Award. Well, he headed down to London on March 17 for the glitzy award ceremony and was judged by a panel including celebrity stylist Paul Merrit and Hair Magazine editor Louise White. The good news is, he won! His prize was a car (a convertable Nissan Micra we’re saying nothing…) and of course, national recognition for Kai and the salon. So if you need you hair styling for a special occasion or just want to pick up some tips, then P.Kai is definately the place to go!

PRC OPENS UP Fed up with your job or just feel like trying something new? Head over to the next Open Evening at Peterborough Regional College on April 1 and stop being a fool! (Like April Fools Day? Anyone?) The

There’ll be tours of the college as well as interactive activities like live cookery and tasting, complementary therapies and a chance to read off an autocue – you can’t be any worse than Vic Reeves at the Brit Awards. There’ll also be chance to enrol for part time and evening courses like languages and childminding. ENTER YOUR HUMAN HOUNDS TO HIT THE TRACK We like a laugh and if you’re the sort who’s game on for a bit of fun too it’s time to get your name down for the Human Dog Race, organised by Sue Ryder Care and supported by ESP Magazine. There’s a wag in every work place that’ll do it, so get them to roll over to the dog track this summer and take part! If you’ve never seen this event before, it basically involves people dressing up as dogs and running round the greyhound track. The heats take place this summer during race nights at the dog track, Peterborough, so if you fancy doing something silly to help raise money for charity then get involved. Before you pause (like paws? Get it?), you don’t have to be as fit as a butcher’s dog because you only have to race half the track. If you’re at the dogs this summer, keep an eye out for the heats and make sure you don’t miss the final – it’ll be a scream! IT’S FUN TO RUN AT THE GREAT EASTERN – ENTER NOW! OK so a half marathon might be a tad too strenuous... so try the Fun Run instead! The Great Eastern Run is on its way and dedicated runners are in training now, but over a thousand people took part in the Fun Run last year, and this year the organisers would like to see that number double! There are loads of good reasons to do it, from raising money for charity or just getting in shape in time for beach season. If you are doing it for charity, then there are on the spot prizes for the best fancy dress so you better start thinking of ideas now. The Fun Run’s only 5km so get your friends together to dress up, or get your work mates to enter and get some profile for your company at the same time. PUSH THE BED OUT! If you see strangely dressed people racing hospital beds (with patients still in them!) down Long Causeway, Peterborough on April 5, don’t worry. It’s not a result of NHS budget cuts but Sue Ryder Care’s annual Bed Push. Last year, £16,000 was raised by 26 teams including winners Perkins Pushers from the Perkins Fire Department. It’s a laugh to watch and take part as teams in fancy dress hit the street and take on various challenge - last year, a team from Buckles Solicitors dressed as Elvis and the Memphis Babes and a team from Peterborough Hospital dressed as Palliative Pirates. LOCALEVENTS Liv Slater has the lowdown on the best events around… CELEBRATE 50TH FLOWER PARADE IN SPALDING

It’s the 50th Spalding Flower Parade over the May bank holiday, and it’s all set to be extra special this year – over 500,000 fresh tulips heads will be used to make the floats, which all have the theme of ‘Thanks for the Memories.’ As well as the parade on May 3, there will be a carnival with purpose-built music trailers and over 300 local children taking part. The parade will leave Springfields at 2pm and will make its way through the town centre to the Sir Halley Stewart field where there’ll be absolutely loads happening on both Saturday and Sunday including a motorbike display team, games, stalls and live music. When night falls on Saturday, there’ll be a firework display to kick start what is one of the busiest nights in Spalding. A lot of pubs will have special entertainment on for the weekend and they’ll all be very lively! Here at ESP we’re always banging on about what our fine city has to offer so we’re right behind this special Spirit of Peterborough night at The Brewery Tap on April 15. It’s all about celebrating our home town, past present and future. There’ll be feel good bands like Citizen Smithy and entertainment all night, all from Peterborough and with as many different cultures and communities represented as possible! There’s a Thai buffet and if you’ve ever eaten at Brewery Tap before, then you’ll know the food’s delicious. A Spirit of Peterborough Award will be given to someone who has promoted or enhanced the city through their work, fundraising or just good deeds so if you know someone who deserves a little recognition, the organisers want your nominations now. BIRTHDAY PARTY AT SOUTH HOLLAND CENTRE

It’s time to party in Spalding. It’s been ten years since the South Holland Centre in Spalding was refurbished and reopened and it’s still going strong! So if you’ve ever been to see one of the wide variety of events in the purposebuilt auditorium – from jazz divas to ballet, talks with TV stars to plays – join their 10th anniversary party! Everyone’s invited on April 11, even if you’ve never been to the centre before. Leading the celebrations will be the boogie-woogie blues band Tipitina, who’ve had great reviews and sound like they’re straight from New Orleans. They’ll definitely get you in the mood for dancing and there’ll also be a disco in the function room, which will be decked out with posters from all the old shows. Obviously, the bar will be open throughout, and you even get a free welcome drink! CINDERELLA YOU WILL GO TO THE (GOLDEN) BALL

If work’s a nightmare and you feel like doing something a little fairytale, then don’t miss the Golden Ball on May 17 at the Holiday Inn. It’s a big fundraiser for Sue Ryder Care and is organised by two sisters, Claire and Sallie, in memory of their dad who was cared for at the Thorpe Hall Hospice. The ball is now in its third year and this time you’re encouraged to wear black tie and diamonds. Claire and Sallie have promised new additions to the entertainment and lots of surprises for the guests, as well as the return of the band ‘After Dark’ and a disco so you can dance the night away. It’s a widely known fact that here at ESP we enjoy a drink or two, so we’re definitely going to be at the Charters’ Bank Holiday Beer Festival – and we’re bringing our Paparazzi! Charters’ massive beer garden will be full of people enjoying a few of the wide range of drinks that’ll be on offer from May 2 – 5. There won’t just be real ales (more than 60!) and continental beers; there’ll also be traditional ciders, whiskeys and wines on offer. Live bands will be performing all weekend and in case you get the munchies there’ll be a barbeque all day, which was tasty and reasonably priced last year. It’s not very often we’re that patriotic in this country, although the special St George’s Weekend at The Fox Inn, Folksworth gives us a very good excuse to start flag waving! Running on April 26 and 27, there’ll be beers and ciders from all over England as they’re having their first beer festival. Once you’ve sampled all the drinks (well, maybe not all) you can take part in the tug of war championship or even try your hand at pole jousting, which sounds like a laugh! APRIL BIKE SHOW AND PARTY

Whether you’re into bikes or just good music, don’t miss the April Bike Show at The Plough, Farcet Fen. Organised by BMF Region 4 (East) to raise funds for The East Anglia Air Ambulance and motorbike safety schemes, there’s some great entertainment on over the weekend of April 18 to 20. The bands include TMS Blues, Knocker and Inoffensive and there’ll be a Best at Show prize for the person with the coolest bike. There’s also a pizza eating contest (we’re there!), raffles, auctions, a tattooist, a bouncy castle and face painting. All the local clubs will have stands, like the BMF, and there’ll also be some stalls selling all things bike-related. The highlight has to be a guy called John Evans. He can balance very heavy things like a Mini, two people or 235 pints of beer on his head and holds Guinness world records for it! Camping is available, as well as food and drink from The Plough. TRUCKER’S DELIGHT

Truckfest is always one of the biggest shows in Peterborough and this year’s event on May 4 and 5 looks to be no exception. With literally hundreds of trucks taking part in the UK truck awards – known as ‘Crufts for Trucks’, death defying monster truck displays in the main arena and some great evening entertainment for campers, it’s an exciting weekend for all the family. There’ll be various celebs (yet to be revealed), there’s also a massive general trade exhibition so there’s opportunity for a little retail therapy too. DISCO INFERNO WHAT A NIGHT!

ABBA GOLD

Time to get your flares out of mothballs, as Voulez Vous come to the Cresset in Bretton on April 25. Telling the story of Abba’s rise and fall through all their hits and some truly fabulous outfits, this show has had great reviews from audiences across the country. Voulez Vous have been going for 15 years, but the new show, ‘Abba - The Story’ looks set to be their best yet. Tickets £16.50. Box office: 01733 265705.

If your life has ever revolved around Saturday nights, then you’ll probably enjoy this show at the Broadway on May 1. ‘Oh What a Night,’ starring Kid Creole, is a musical based on a 70s nightclub and features all the hits from decade, like ‘Celebration, ‘Shaft,’ and, best of all, ‘YMCA.’ The plot involves a desperate club owner who lets Hollywood film inside his club, the Inferno, in order pay off his gambling debts. Of course, all the regulars want a piece of the action and there’s some romance too. But that’s not really what this show is about – it’s all about the music! YOU SHOULD BE DANCING OUT OF TOWN HOT ONES

If you fancy going to see a musical this month, then make it ‘Showboat.’ Set on the Mississippi river, it was first shown over 80 years ago on Broadway, and is about the performers on board a steamer as they travel down river. The songs are classics, like ‘Ol’ Man River’ and the characters have very tangled lives, which Captain Andy must try and sort out so that the show can go on. See it at The Key Theatre from April 2 – 12, tickets are £15 on Saturday evening, otherwise £13. Box office: 01733 772439.

If you’re a fan of the Bee Gees, you might want to head over to the Priory Centre in St Neots on April 11. Bee Gees Magic are said to be one of the best tribute acts in the country, and are even said to outperform the original act live! They will be singing all the Bee Gee’s hits from the sixties, seventies and eighties, like ‘Staying Alive,’ ‘Night Fever’ and ‘Tragedy,’ as well a songs written for other artists like ‘Chain Reaction’ in one scarily authentic stage show. Despite him being a little bit strange, Michael Jackson’s music is widely loved and ‘Thriller Live’ celebrates all that’s good about him as a performer. With a West End cast of singers, dancers and live band, April 12 is set to be a real party. You have to admit, Dad’s Army is very funny - even though the TV series is almost as old as the characters in it. This stage version features four episodes, two of which had been lost when some BBC engineers wiped the tapes, which almost sounds like an episode in itself! One lost episode focuses on Walker, the cockney spiv, trying to avoid the army, the other on Frazer and Jones (don’t panic!) competing for a promotion. Abby Surgeon, step up to the mic… "I’ve been looking for a new woman in my life for ages!” jokes Kev about his bubbly new cohost. “Seriously though, Abby is a big talent, and while it would’ve been easy to have stuck on any girl to give the show a female element, waiting for Abby to come along has been a great move for us.”

So Kev should be no probs!” Kev’s had the hot seat to himself for quite a while now though so can Abby size up to him? “Well, with him at 6' 2 and me at 5' 4 - no competition! What I lack in inches, I make up for in a... big, big personality.”

Abby Surgeon is already a media pro, working on TV and films so now she’s getting behind the mic and sizing up to Kev every morning as she tries her hand at radio. “I’ve been on Sky and Terrestrial Television for the last five years and thought it would be great to work with a local radio station,” Abby tells us. “So when the challenge of working with Kev came up it was just too good to miss!” Abby landed her first TV job interviewing Julia Carling exclusively for VH1, which then led onto other interviews for MTV including getting up close and personal with Adam

“She's young and provocative in terms of her presenting style,” adds Kev “and while she may try and lead me astray with her mad ideas, I only hope my own experience in the job will keep me out of trouble.” Now the female element has been restored to the show what other changes will we see? There are some interesting new competitions, but they promise classic bits like the Thousand Pound Minute and the Hereward Years will still remain. The new radio star’s been living in Peterborough for the past few months, although she’s still darting off regularly to fulfil her filming commitments. If you want to see more of Abby, she’s appearing in a film called 'A Bunch of Amateurs' which will be out in 2009 starring Burt Reynolds and Samantha Bond and in the meantime you can also catch her on Adrenalin Junkie and Celebrity Fitness Focus on HKH TV. At the moment though, she’s still settling into life in Peterborough. “I don't know the city very well just yet,” she confesses, “however, I love the multi-cultural lifestyle. According to findings, in comparison to women in other European countries, British birds are more intensely attracted to a man with body hair - and as they get older their desire for a ‘real man’ increases. A man in the classic masculine mould of Sean Connery, Andy Garcia or Robbie Williams is outnumbering the one in four women who prefer smoother types like Daniel Craig, Johnny Wilkinson and Colin Farrell. For British women over 30 a hairy man is the pinnacle of masculinity, but just 24% of women under 25 find a man with body hair attractive. It also turns out a hairy man's appeal increases the further north you go (Scotland, 47%). TOILETS CLOSED – PLEASE PEE ON THE STREET

Lib Dem Councillor, Darren Fower, was recently going on about how the City Council is failing local people by keeping the toilets closed along Cattle Market Road during evenings. I second that motion – that’s what they say in politics isn’t it? Apparently re-opening them can lead to attracting anti-social behaviour and drug taking.

These toilets, when open, really come into play at weekends. The walkway where they’re situated divides Broadway and New Road, the two main areas of heavy reveller traffic on a Friday and Saturday night. People who socialise in town at the weekend pay their taxes, spend money and help to keep the city’s nightlife as vibrant as it can be. So why has their right to pee in a public toilet been taken away from them? Using these toilets beats using the crowded and broken ones you have to queue for at most of the city’s bars and clubs. If the council wants to curb anti-social behaviour and drug taking then give me a call and I’ll take you to places where plenty of both are going on right this minute.

JOE’S BIGGEST FIGHT COMES TO TOWN

City promoter, Kevin Sanders, will be bringing former heavyweight boxing champion, Joe Bugner to the Peterborough Marriott Hotel on April 24 and Face of ESP Kerry Bates and I will be in attendance for what will undoubtedly be a moving and memorable evening. Joe was ranked as one of the best boxers of his era during the 1970s after beating Henry Cooper to win the British heavyweight title and twice going the distance with the great Muhammad Ali. He retired having held the British, Commonwealth and European titles and made several comebacks before finally throwing in the towel in 1999 with a record of 69 fights, 13 losses and one draw – 41 of his wins came by the way of knockout. Today he’s struggling to live with a crippling back condition that has made his spine weak. As with Ali and Parkinson’s Disease, it’s unimaginable how these once feared fighting machines now struggle to do everyday things we take for granted. Kevin, who recently put on a sportsman’s dinner with boxing’s bravest, Michael Watson, has also brought the likes of the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard, Jo Frasier, Henry Cooper, Amir Khan and Joe Calzaghe to the city. HONESTY KI LLED TH E RADI O STAR

Ever since the Blue Peter ‘getting a kid on a studio tour to pretend to be a competition winner’ scandal, and reports of certain Radio 1 shows using producers as callers, there’s been a new culture of ‘transparency’ within the broadcasting media and promise of openness and honesty – and I for one absolutely HATE it. Maybe I’ve got this wrong, but I really don’t have any problem whatsoever having the wool pulled over my eyes if it enhances my viewing/listening pleasure. I don’t care if the giant crab Gordon Ramsay claimed to have plucked from the sea bed was actual ly caught by a researcher and I don’t care if Jeremy Clarkson built a car by himself or not. If Gord and Jezza tell me they did, that’s good enough for me, don’t spoil it! Listening to a radio programme the other day I actually heard the presenter say “Please don’t call or text, this programme is pre recorded.” What?! Did I have to know that? Did it really harm anybody letting us assume the guy was at work like us, not sitting at home stuffing his face whilst some spotty kid with a GCSE in Media Studies, desperate to break into radio sits in a lonely studio pressing the buttons to play out recorded links? Do they really have to tell us that an interview was pre-recorded two days ago? It just totally ruins the magic. And don’t get me started on competition winne rs. Believe me, when you’re a presenter giving away a great prize on air, it’s soul destroying to hype it all up, build the moment, only to have to give it away to some flat winner with a charisma bypass who can barely say thank you. And as a listener, it’s even more rubbish. Pick someone who’s so ecstatic to win that they give you a great reaction on air and everyone’s happy. The whole point of radio is that it’s ‘theatre of the mind’ and any radio presenter worth their salt exploits that to its limit. We certainly did when I was broadcasting, but if you think I’m going to be honest enough to admit how now, you can forget it!

DON’T TAKE COLE TO NEWCASTLE, CHERYL Rumours abound that cheating love rat Ashley Cole wants to renew his wedding vows with wife Cheryl in a bid to get their marriage back on track after it was revealed how he could barely keep ‘little Ashley’ in his Calvin Klein’s long enough for the ink to dry on the marriage certificate. Am I missing something here? I know footballers are thick (excepting our beloved Posh, obviously) but surely even Ash can work out that the correct response to the bit about remaining faithful and forsaking all others is “I do”, not “I do, I mean it this time,” or maybe he just thought that, that bit was optional the first time round.

2. A 'will they, won't they' story between 007 and a woman. Traditionally this always used to be between him and Moneypenny, but in CR I saw signs that Judi Dench's 'M' was taking a bit of shine to him. There's a definite sexual undercurrent to their 'working' relationship if you look closely. Firstly Bond breaks into her flat and as he leaves she sternly says - "Oh, Bond one more thing, never break into my flat again." Later on we seen 'M' woken up in bed in her flat by an urgent phone call from MI5 with her snoring OAP husband laying next to her, and thirdly (and most telling) when Vesper Lynd first meets Bond and thinks he's trying to chat her up he nonchalantly says... "Don't worry, you're not my kind of woman... you're not married."

A QUANTUM OF COMMON SENSE Right, now pay attention James Bond fans - because this is important. As you’ll know there's a new Bond film on the way called 'Quantum of Solace'. (Yeah, I know, not the catchiest title but there you go). Apparently it’s taken from a short story Ian Fleming wrote about Bond and the film’s due for release towards the end of 2008. 007 actor Daniel Craig has revealed that the film will pick up from where 'Casino Royale' finished, and this should be an interesting development in the Bond franchise. None of the other actors who've played Bond ever got a continuing story, but as Craig's been signed up to make three films, it effectively means the next two are going be Casino Royale 2, and 3 rather than stand alone adventures.

But what storylines are the next two films going to develop I wonder? Well, after watching the DVD of Casino Royale again last month I’ve got a few suggestions. 1. The open end to Casino Royale should mean we get to see Bond go after some of the other villains that were involved with Le Chiffre. The trail has eventually got to lead to 'Blofeld', Bond's arch nemesis. If there are glimpses of this in the next film it'll set up a great showdown in the third film. All the filmmakers have to do is find someone who's famous, bald and egotistical to play Blofeld. I don’t know about you, but my money’s on Elton John.

Put these three things together and what do you get? A storyline where Bond beds 'M' (maybe after an MI5 works do?) Obviously it would have to be tastefully done. I don't think any of us want to see them rutting like rabbits, so perhaps they could just hint at it. You know, so all we see is Bond wake up in bed with a groggy head, look over (we think he's bedded yet another stunner) when all of a sudden she turns over in her sleep, and it's not a Bond girl, it's a Bond gran - Judi Dench with her 'denchers' on the bedside table in a glass. 3. Now we've got a female 'M' with Judi Dench, I think the stage is set for a male Moneypenny. I've given this a lot of thought and I think the best person to play a male secretary would be David Walliams. He's a massive Bond fan, and could play Moneypenny in a similar way to the character of Sebastian in ‘Little Britain’, the government press secretary who's in love with the Prime Minister. "Moneypenny, you're looking as beautiful as ever, I've brought you back a present from the Bahamas, here... " "Oh, so you've been to the Bahamas without me have you James? What have you brought me back I wonder? Crabs?" 4. Another hallmark of all the great Bond movies are the gadgets and cars. Everyone seems obsessed with the Aston Martin DB5. For me though, my favourite ever Bond car was the Lotus Esprit Roger

What if MI5 faked their deaths and placed them under witness relocation to protect them from Blofeld. It'd be an interesting twist to the Bond saga for example if Daniel Craig's in a casino about to deliver his - “The name's Bond... James Bond” line when all of a sudden another voice at a card table beats him to it… the camera pans around to reveal Sean Connery and he's at the table with Honor Blackman (Pussy Galore)! How good a storyline would that be. Connery and Blackman playing Daniel Craig’s Mum and Dad.

STAND OUT, STAND UP One of my favourite club comics is back at the Cresset Comedy Club on April 25. Ian Cognito is like no other comedian I’ve ever seen. A veteran of the alternative comedy scene of the late 80’s, the man is explosively opinionated but very, very funny. Stories of his performances have entered stand up comedy folklore. My favourite is the time he walked on stage at a notoriously rowdy gig down South carrying a power drill, proceeded to drill a hole in the side of the wall, took out a Rawlplug, put it in the hole he’d just made, then filled it with a huge hook he had in his pocket, and then to howls of laughter hung his jacket on it, turned to the crowd and said… “There’s never anywhere to hang your f***ing coat is there ?” The Cresset box office: 01733 265705. I can also strongly recommend Paul Foot at the Stamford Comedy Club on April 15 at Stamford Arts Centre. I heard one reviewer describe him as ‘the missing link between Ross Noble and Frankie Howerd’, but the best way I can describe him is if you imagine Julian Clary and Paul Merton having a secret love child… Paul Foot would be that child. He’s brilliant. Check him out - you won’t be disappointed. There’s also musical comedy with Isy Suttie, a regular on Radio 2’s ‘Out to Lunch’ series, and rising comedy star Michael Fabbri. Dave Spikey’s performance in Peterborough is sure to go down with fans of Peter Kay as Spikey co-wrote and starred in the popular ‘Phoenix Nights’ sitcom a few years ago. HERE KITTY, KITTY… KERRY TAMES THE BIG CATS! The Muscle Finesse Panthers have leapt into their new season so we sent our Face of ESP Kerry Bates along to wish them luck. With a hot young team, their youngest ever in fact, Kerry had no complaints and was happy to be their mascot. By the looks of things The Panthers were pretty happy to have her along too! “I really enjoyed meeting the boys,” said Kerry with a grin, “they’re all rather hot so going down to wish them well for the coming season was a very welcome job for me to do! Hans the captain and Danny who was at the Dinner Dance last year are especially easy on the old eyes so I’m very much looking forward to going down for a night with the rest of the ESP crowd!” Captain Hans Andersen is the oldest at just 27 while the average age is just 22. It’s an exciting new team what’ll be hitting the dirt and doing battle at the Showground over the coming months. If you haven’t been along to the Speedway before it’s worth checking out this all-action sport which sees some top talent hurtling around the track on bikes with no brakes! We went to the Speedway at the East of England Showground and were hooked from the start. There was no bad language in the crowd and we found that the riders were very approachable with our requests for autographs, but above all, we found the competition to be so exciting. We believe Speedway to be fantastic family entertainment at a very reasonable cost and the children love it!”

Does your nosh for the night comprise of a ‘just add water’ packet mix? ESP’s healthy eating guru, nutritionist Karen Devine says it’s time to rustle up some real food! Call me old fashioned here but if had to bake a cake I’d get out the flour, the sugar, butter and the eggs as that’s the way we bake a great cake… (not that mine has ever been called great). So why are many of our kids being taught to make a cake with an egg and ‘just add water’ cake mix what’s that all about? OK, a cake is fattening I know but I am using this as an example. I had an experience years ago when I decided to take my kids to Centre Parcs with a handful of friends, the vote was they wanted Spaghetti Bolognaise for dinner. So armed with my ingredients it suddenly felt like I was appearing on Master Chef when I was questioned about what I was putting in, you know the normal stuff - onions, garlic, tinned tomatoes etc. - the kids asked me “When do you put the Dolmio sauce in?”!

Many people generally don’t have time to cook in the way they want. Convenience foods in jars, tins and boxes have become a regular feature in many a cupboard which our busy lifestyles have demanded. But one thing I can say as a mum of teenage kids, if mine want to cook, they cook from scratch. I want to teach them the basics so when they need to, they can look after themselves in a healthier way. I was glad to hear the other day that schools are aiming to bring back more cooking at school. I remember one of my lessons in the school week was ‘home economics’, or should I now say ‘food technology’ as that’s the techno name for cooking. It seemed that every week we’d be rustling up something in our home economics block. Mind you by the time I’d sat on the crossbar of my mates bike to get home it looked anything like a culinary delight, more like football team had whacked it round the field for 90mins! Whatever, it was great to get it home and show off my skills. If kids want to cook, I think we should teach them the basic ingredients, the real food ingredients, not a box of chemicals which when adding a cup of water and an egg produces a perfect black forest gateau, tempting as it is. I used to love locking myself in the kitchen and having a cooking afternoon, it was a way of losing that boring Sunday afternoon when I was a kid, we didn’t have MSN, Play Stations or computers to occupy the weekends so being in the kitchen was a good pastime. I read an article the other week where a child was asked what vegetables chips came from. He didn’t know because he got them from the chip shop! Food comes under one of the basic ingredients we need for life, why is it we take it so much for granted and not give it the time? Busy lives, always doing something, or having to be somewhere has killed off this basic skill for many of us and yet some of our favourite TV programmes are based on food and cooking which shows we love it really. Another factor is that some basic ingredients can be more expensive than buying a box of cake mix or a jar or sauce. The odd convenient jar is a way to rustle up a quick meal for the family but when used every day it kills off one of our basic skills which are to collect/prepare and cook food. The taste of real home cooked food with basic raw ingredients will always bring more satisfaction. Your kitchen might be written off in the aftermath like mine, but the end result is worth it. CELEB CHEF COOKS UP A FEAST AT LOCAL CHILDREN’S CENTRE

Celeb chef Lesley Waters, star of BBC2’s cookery show ‘Ready Steady Cook’ hit Peterborough recently and helped the next generation of chefs rustle up some healthy snacks as part of a new government campaign to showcase the range of support and activities available to young children and their families through Sure Start Children’s Centres.

Lesley helped out in the kitchen with children, parents and staff from the Caverstede Early Years Centre in Walton. The visit was part of the DCSF campaign, Altogether Better for Children, which aims to raise awareness of Sure Start Children’s Centres and the broad-range of support they offer to children, parents and the community. They help to educate, support and engage all families by offering a variety of community-led services, such as access to early learning, health professionals, parenting support, training opportunities and help finding employment. If there’s one thing that I know, England doesn’t have half as many public holidays as other countries in Europe. Ireland gets St Patrick’s Day, Scotland, voluntary holiday on St Andrew’s Day, and the Welsh Assembly agree that St David’s Day should be a holiday. Further afield, French citizens get Bastille Day – it isn’t a Saint’s day, however I couldn’t think of any others!

I know you’re probably thinking ‘yeah Susan tell us something we don’t know,’ but if you give me a chance, I’ll ignore your heckles and tell you why it’s my mission to honour St George by supporting the need for an extra days holiday in his memory. Now don’t get me wrong, I love work (just wanna say ‘Hi’ to the boss who’ll probably be reading), I’ve got a really strong work ethic, but I know I’m hardly Nelson Mandela either so help me out here, I’ve always been one to want to make a difference. Our St George was very brave in fighting that big mean dragon, so really I think it’s only polite to mark his good deeds.

Another reason is that I don’t think we celebrate our Englishness enough and we have such a lot to celebrate we really ought to have St.George’s Day to do it don’t you think? Everyone’s just gone Guinness mad for St. Patrick’s Day but what about all the things we could celebrate…Ye Olde bacon butty, the full English breakfast, good old English Sunday roast and our great Queen, Elizabeth II (all food related apart from the latter – you can see a theme here). Then there’s our sporting heritage, we can celebrate (some) great games of football... I only really like live football, you understand, TV football is trés boring unless it’s England or Man-U playing, rugby (yawn am not a fan of burly lads – well not that burly anyway) and cricket (triple yawn or let me put it another way – yawn, yawn, YAWN! But I am a Flintoff fan). I remember the last bank holiday… I woke up early on autopilot for work, fell out of bed (literally!) with a groan and then realised that no, indeed I didn’t have to go to work and no, I didn’t actually have to get up so ruddy early! I snuggled back in bed and reset my alarm to later o’clock, and my body came over all tingly. Was it the sense of euphoria or was I actually still drunk from the night before? Quite possibly… but how glorious it is when you realise it’s a Bank Holiday and you have the whole day ahead for fun and frolics with your bezzie friends! Savour that thought – saints, or not so hard working sinners, surely we need more of that? Am I convincing you yet to leap on my extra Bank Holiday band wagon! Of course a little extra time off gives us the chance to partake in a little self development… last bank holiday I had a fantastic day out at Paintball (improving my self protection skills hiding behind a bush – Ouch! Those paintballs hurt!) followed by some grub and yummy hot chocolates at Toscanini in Eye (improving my dining etiquette – slurping is so not a good look!) I’m sure even St. George would’ve been glad of the chance to settle back down in bed for an extra hour with a dragon butty and the chance to kick back with the lads… so if you love Bank Hols as much as me, support my pledge for an extra day off on April 23. it’s proved to be a popular night out for a little light relief from the daily 9-5 and a chance for some casual networking.

The third Barnardo’s Ten-Pin Bowling Tournament was organised by Steve King from Buckles Solicitors LLP, chairman of the Peterborough Fundraising Committee, a group of local businesses who get together to raise cash for the charity through various events. Over the last few years

That hasn’t stopped them flying out of the traps and becoming a market leader and a great place to work. Directors Dominik Lipnicki and Martin Wade have just overseen the qualification of their first internally trained mortgage advisor. Claire started with the company in Feb 2007 as a part time telemarketing assistant and by May was pulled to one side and asked if she wanted to train to be a mortgage advisor. “I thought why not, the company promised they would support me so I went for it,” says Claire. The course involved a lot of home

study and three exams but she cracked it. “I had to study for about two hours a day at home and a lot of the work and the exams were complex, but the guys at work gave me lots of practical help and they just stuck by me, in fact we stick by each other, it certainly helped me.” The company does seem a great place to work and by the look of it they train their staff well too - “We would rather spend time developing our staff than let them stagnate or move on,” Dominik says, “we also like to work hard but enjoy it too, we sponsor the greyhound race of the year at the Fengate stadium, The Cesarewitch. We have the whole VIP suite, 40 tickets where we invite all the staff and their families and other guests and we have a great night.” So is Claire going further up the ladder? “I don’t know yet, I think I will get my teeth into this one and see how it goes,” wise words indeed. Caught in the a ESP HITS THE LOCAL PUBS … The ESP Paparazzi boys and girls are always out an about capturing the fun and games at various venues and events. They recently joined Kerry Bates our Face of ESP at The Bull in Newborough where she was presenting some charity cheques and adding a little glamour to their special night. The pub holds several fundraising events throughout the year and then hands over the cash to local good causes so Kerry was all too happy to join in the fun. This year it was the Newborough Amateur Dramatic Society and the Friends of Newborough Society who were in the money. Feet to the Fire provided the music and regulars sank a few celebratory pints before getting ready to rasie a few more quid over the coming months. Thanks for your hospitality guys! Next up, local band Voodoo decided to call it a day and invited Kerry and the Paparazzi girls along to their farewell gig at The Cherry Tree on Oundle Road. The place was heaving and our girls joined the party atmosphere as music fans bid a sad farewell to this popular band. Steve from the band told ESP they had a brilliant send off – “The band had a fantastic final night with the Cherry Tree full to the brim. A lot of people turned up for our special night who’ve followed the band over the years in it's various formats, all commented on how sad it was to see the end of a great local band. “The guys in the band were very pleased to be joined for a photographic session by the lovely Kerry, it gives us older guys some street cred to be seen with a fantastic looking young lady!”

EThe Peterborough Arena in Bretton recently saw one of the greatest anniversary games that this country’s ever seen… and our Face of ESP Kerry Bates shoot some ice hockey pucks! The Legends of Peterborough game celebrated 25 years of ice hockey in the city and saw fifty players who’ve pulled on a Phantoms or Pirates shirt take to the ice in front of a capacity crowd. Our Paparazzi crew went along, with Emma behind the lens and Kerry and Becca mingling with the crowd. Eventually though, it had to be done and the girls were dragged on to the ice to test their sporting skills with an ice hockey stick and puck. Despite wearing their heels, a carpet was spread over the ice and they joined Mikey from Hereward FM to take their shots without falling over once! There was a cracking atmosphere as hundreds of ice hockey fans raised the roof as old favourites like Doug McEwen, John Lawless, Todd Bidner, Alcide Jutras, Duncan Cook, Danny Shea, Cam Plante, Trent Kaese and Randy Smith took to the ice – many had flown in specially. It was a fantastic night which will stay with the city’s hundreds of ice hockey fans for years to come. Tough but sweet? Joanne Quinney takes a look at the latest reinvention of Madonna as she returns with Hard Candy… Almost 25 years at the top of her game and still Madonna shows no sign of letting go of her crown as Queen of Pop. Having grown up to the sounds of Papa Don’t Preach, Like a Prayer and Into the Groove to name just a few hits from the 1980’s, I’m sure everyone has their favourite Madonna track.

Justin also provides backing vocals. Why did the first lady of pop name her new album Hard Candy? “The album title is a juxtaposition of tough and sweetness, kind of like I’m going to kick your ass but it’s going to make you feel good. And of course, I love candy!”

The mother of two biological children and one adopted child is back with a new and improved sound on her eleventh album Hard Candy, the follow up to Confessions on a Dancefloor, which debuted at number one in thirty countries and sold over eight million copies. The style of the album is still up tempo and remains in club mode, but with an added Hip Hop beat which comes courtesy of her collaborations with Timbaland, Justin Timberlake and Pharrell Williams of The Neptunes.

It can be said that Madonna is one of the biggest selling female solo artists ever. A multi-Grammy-award winning singer, songwriter, producer, stage performer, actress and let’s not forget children’s book author! She’s sold over 200 million albums in the course of her two decades at the top and in March was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This reunited her with Mr Timberlake as he presented her the award. In his speech he managed a dig at a certain ex-girlfriend of his, cleverly saying that Madonna had publicly kissed someone he may or may not have kissed, whilst he was in the audience, quickly adding that it was Sean Penn (Madonna’s ex husband) but we all know he meant Britney! He also added that there are a lot of ‘Madonna wannabees,’ but there is only one Madonna.

The first track to be released from Hard Candy is fantastic dance number ‘4 Minutes.’ This brought Madonna into contact with Justin Timberlake, as the two co-wrote the song and it was produced by Timbaland.

AMY MACDONALD Her album’s just gone double platinum in the UK, she's on a sold out tour and her album’s climbing the charts in Germany. Amy Macdonald’s going places but is keeping it real… Amy Macdonald is a Glasgow teenager who writes and performs songs that sound like the work of someone much older and wiser. She’s been performing her folk influenced songs in and around Glasgow since she was 15, and is currently touring Europe, selling out lots of venues. Her success has been slow burning, but has seen her achieve double platinum sales. Her inspirations come from artists like Travis, who inspired her to pick up a guitar and their album, ‘The Man Who’ was the first she ever bought, and from artists like Pete Doherty, whom she wrote the song ‘Poison Prince’ about. “When you’re a fan of somebody, it’s really hard to watch them spiral out of control,” she says about him. Amy isn’t letting success go to her head, however. She lives in the same area she grew up in and still camps when she goes to festivals, whether she’s performing or not. She says – “I didn’t get into this to be famous. It was for the music. If I end up being miserable then I’ll quit or take a long break.” She’s cynical of the fame game, and hates the X Factor. She says – “It’s just a money-making machine for Simon Cowell. And these poor people go on there and they’re basically tortured for TV.”

There is an alternative. We found ourselves in such a situation last month so we drove across to The Windmill Tavern in Orton Waterville to have a go at their all you can eat buffet for £5.95. Having paid at the bar we took our tokens into the back restaurant, which is a lovely intimate but large room, handed them over and got stuck in. I chose ham and mushroom pie with curly fries and salad, perfect for a chilly night. It was delicious. Light puff pastry and rich creamy filling and as much as you can eat! My partner Tracy chose the curry - succulent chunks of turkey in a creamy Korma style sauce with light fluffy rice which kept her quiet for a good 20 minutes! We also tried the sweet and sour pork which again did what it said on the hot plate, it was great tasting, simple fayre, and piping hot. If your appetite is huge and you can eat your way through this menu there are a selection of sweets available too! We were served quicker than you would be at a fast food joint, the food was miles better and the ambience of the tavern is warm and welcoming… Oh, and the range of real ales was more than welcome! So, put the takeaway menus back in the drawer and give The Windmill a try Monday through to Wednesday. 6pm- 9pm. Andy Slater

If you like your sport action packed and full of muscle it could be time to touchdown with Peterborough Saxons. Sundays won’t know what’s hit them… There’s a new team about to storm their way into the fixture lists this month as our local American Football team, backed by the might of Marshall Dodge, aim to make sure everyone knows there’s another sports team on the block worth a watch. The Peterborough Saxons will kick off their season on Sunday April 20 with a corker of a local derby game away against Cambridge Cats. Traditionally when these two teams clash they’re very close games, and always very physical! Last season the Saxons won 6 - 0 in torrential rain at their ground at Stanground College. If you’re going to start supporting these guys this game should certainly fire up your interest! The Peterborough Saxons are a contender for the Division 2 title this year after narrowly losing to Dundee in last year’s Playoffs and will be going head to head with the Cats for the Eastern Title. ”There’s more at stake than just a win or a loss,” Saxons’ general manager Mark Kerr told ESP, “county bragging rights are up for grabs in this game. It’s a real battle to be the top team in Cambridgeshire.” If you didn’t realise we even had an American Football team here it’s fair to say the Saxons have had mixed fortunes getting established, but things improved in 2005 when ex Cats head coach Chris Wallis transferred to the team and brought experienced players to the club. My first appointment was with Neil Scott, general manager of the Haycock Hotel in Wansford where I was greeted by Ellen at the main entrance. I took the opportunity to get Neil’s thoughts on the Voyager while I was there and he seemed impressed. First impression from the back seat was how big and comfortable everything was. Even though I’d rather have been playing on the Play Station or watching a movie on its many in-car gadgets, I was forced to keep focused which is hard with all that luxury so close to you. The seats are like great big armchairs which I eased into as Gerald my chauffeur drove me around, and it’s so smooth when you’re in the back you could quite easily nod off (which I didn’t, I promise). From a family point of view I think this car would be great if you have children as you can keep your eye on them without moving round thanks to a secret

mirror on the sunglasses holder, plus there are all the game/DVD options to keep them amused. It’s safe with side-curtain air-bags too, traction control and ESP, seven full-size seats and fixings for three Isofix child seats as standard. This month I was voted by my Tai Kwan Do club to perform taxi duties to our black belt training session and everyone was pleased to have a very comfy seat on the trip down there. The Grand Voyager’s also versatile, if like me you’re always transporting larger objects around or do a lot of camping, as the seats fold flat into the floor giving you an instant ‘van’ and there’s no having to leave the spare seats in the garage. So let me give you the details… priced from £25,995 (the same as the previous generation model) the new car boasts revised exterior and interior design plus an updated range of petrol and diesel engines. Among the new features are heated seats, electric windows in the power-sliding

This bike is certainly far too slick and powerful for a newbie. It reaches 0-60 in 2.8 secs, 0 -170 in 14.7 secs! You can even do 95mph in first gear!

GAME ON

MARIO KART (Wii) Out: Apr 11

Out: Apr 7 When a fairy tale princess is banished to a land far away (New York) will all hell break loose, or will she just break into song? Princess Giselle was all set to marry a prince, until an evil queen sent her from the cels of the animated world into a live-action Times Square. Of course, the prince dashes to the rescue. We’ve seen cartoons meet with reality before (‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit?’) but it’s fun to see the Disney ‘magic’ at work in the real world.

The plumber themed racing series has been a multiplayer favourite for years now, and the most recent iteration on the DS is probably the best so far. Can it get any better? New tracks (plus a few classics), motorbikes, stunts and a bigger online mode will give the previous entries a run for their money, and maybe even leave them eating dust. It should keep us going until we finally get our hands on Smash Bros. Brawl.

Out: Apr 14 This film is a riot. The pupils of all-girls school St. Trinian’s are out of control and running wild. When the war zone they call a place of learning is threatened with bankruptcy, all the factions (emos, goths, chavs etc) unite to save the day. The Ealing studios classic is back with a wide appeal; a new generation of noisy kids, those wrinkly enough to remember the originals the first time round and the odd dirty old perv.

When looking for a way to get yourself into shape, staying in and playing videogames is usually hard to recommend (well, there was Dance Dance Revolution I suppose). Now there’s a game designed specifically to encourage you to keep fit and healthy. Of course it can’t do all the work for you, but the challenges make the exercises fun and more appealing to those without the inclination to go to the gym. It costs a bit more than the average Wii title (about £70) because it comes packaged with a hi-tech slab of heavy plastic that you stand on that measures your balance to play the games.

I AM LEGEND

Out: Apr 21 Will Smith is a scientist that had a role in the creation of a ‘miracle cure’ that ends up mutating most of the world’s population; ‘most’ being everyone but him and his dog. By day, Smith has the streets of New York all to himself, and it’s the scenes like this in the first half, when not much is happening, that prove to be the most interesting. At night the former citizens, now mindless killers that can’t stand the sunlight (not quite the vampires of the novel) roam anywhere not barricaded and sealed off by heavy metal shutters. These scenes are effectively suspenseful to begin with, but it all dissolves into by the numbers action and dodgy CGI that falls short of the promising start. Worth a rental though.

It’ll be a big deal, the talk of the gaming world, and probably in the news too, as Rockstar’s games are always controversial (except Table Tennis, unless you see that as a controversy in itself). The sales will be big, that’s a given. The Grand Theft Auto games were the best selling on the PS2. But best of all the game itself will be big. The new and improved Liberty City is yours to explore and wreak havoc in. But you know the drill by now; everybody and their gran has played GTA, and will snap up the latest one.

TAKE 5: STREET GANGS THE WILD ONE (1953)

Two biker gangs, the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and the Beetles clash in a small, quiet town, and the terrorised residents soon take matters into their own hands. The film has dated quite a bit obviously (Rock ’n’ Roll wouldn’t arrive for a couple more years, so all they have is Jazz) but Marlon Brando and Lee Marvin were way ahead of their game here, and it’s still quite cool for its age.

THE WANDERERS (1979)

Apparently if you were a teenage boy in New York in 1963 then you were in a gang; the Del Bombers for black kids, the Wongs for the Chinese and the

Baldies for the ’tough’ guys that are prepared to shave their heads. And if you were Italian, you were in the Wanderers. A great film about gangs that is as fun as it is gritty, with themes about coming of age at the end of an era similar to ‘American Graffiti’ and ‘Easy Rider’.

THE WARRIORS (1979)

Similar to ‘The Wanderers’, this seems to take itself more seriously, despite the comic book style uniforms the gangs wear. The film is based less on reality than it is on an ancient Greek tale of Spartan mercenaries that had to fight their way back across Europe after a botched alliance with Persia saw them almost wiped out. In director Walter Hill’s adaptation, via the Sol

Yurick novel, the Warriors are a small gang in big trouble, trying to get from one end of New York to the other without getting ‘whacked’ by one of the other memorable gangs such as the Orphans and Baseball Furies that are baying for their blood. Oh, and check out ‘Streets of Fire’, another Walter Hill classic.

QUADROPHENIA (1979)

“We are the Mods! We are the Mods! We are, we are, we are the Mods!” Based on The Who album of the same name, this is no musical, rock opera or what have you, but a proper good film. It covers every aspect of Mod culture as it was in 1965; shrinking your jeans, taking the scooter down to Brighton for the day, fighting with rockers and yes,

listening to The Who. It features early performances from Phil Daniels and Ray Winstone who were both in ‘Scum’ (another one to watch) around the same time.

THIS IS ENGLAND (2006)

Shane Meadows (director of the excellent Dead Man’s Shoes) takes us back to 1983, where young lad Shaun is trying to buy Dr. Martens and hang around with a gang of skinheads. They’re just in it for the style until Combo shows up, bringing politics with him, and things turn sour. Not only is it true to the times it depicts, but many of the themes and issues touched upon here will seem uncanny to the present day audience.

There’s some fantastic musical talent in this city with some great stories to tell. Andy Slater has a chin wag with Rex Gates – someone The Beatles once supported! Northumberland stint mixing with Chris Rea, David Coverdale and a very young Chubby Brown, was a reformation with Pete Carter and a six month long ball breaker on the QE2.

Rex Gates

Rex Gates is the son of a Norfolk man who entertained in pubs for beer in the true Vaudeville style, standing on a table singing and dancing, a showman. I saw Rex playing a couple of songs at The Comet in Dogsthorpe a few weeks ago, firstly belting out a mean lick on the bass and secondly bursting his lungs to an old Blues standard, just like his dad then… You have to wander back to the mid fifties to find 16 year-old Rex in his first band, a school friend’s Skiffle band called The Chain Gang, remember this is before Elvis hit Britain and Skiffle was the thing “We had a rival band in Peterborough, The Ferryboat Men, it was Pete Carter’s band,” Rex recalls. The older reader will remember Pete as the landlord of The Cherry Tree before Jess and Ann. “After a while we forgot the rivalry and me and Pete formed The Rebel Rousers, we were the number one Rock ‘n’ Roll band in Peterborough.” A couple of years gigging found Rex living on Southampton pier with the likes of Screaming Lord Sutch touring the South coast and West Country village hall circuit which was the norm for that time - “I stayed in some rough old places!” he tells me, which again was the norm for early sixties Britain.

Beatles open up for us at one gig, I’d never seen anything like it, the noise they made was fantastic.” How many musicians can say that The Beatles opened up for them?! “We also played the Palladium; I had to stand on this bloody platform 8ft in the air and 3ft wide…” Heady days Rex, heady days! Still in the sixties, Marty Wilde calls and not content at having The Beatles as a support act it was the turn of The Stones “They supported us at Hammersmith Odeon!” Not many people left alive can say that… surely. Years of session work in London during the mid to late sixties saw Rex play with the likes of Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Brenda Lee. “They would come over from the States but because of a dispute they weren’t allowed to bring their musicians with them so we got the job,” - who says that unions don’t do any good! Eight years of London took its toll on Rex and he moved back to Peterborough around 1970 and was promptly asked by the then Squire of Stanground (yes, it’s real) Jack Rayner, to form a trio for the Stilton Country Club. This he did with Adrian Titman, a fine keyboard player and vocalist, Colin Hodgkinson on bass and Rex playing his second instrument, drums. A couple of years doing this incorporated a six month stint at the Intercontinental in Liberia where jailing and muggings were

”It was hard work,” he tells me, “it did me in just about, working 14 hours a day. We did have some laughs though!” The wicked glint in his eye gets sharper! “I was chased round the deck by an American woman brandishing a Derringer pistol, I chose her daughter instead of her and she wasn’t happy…” We all have choices to make but what a choice - a mad woman or her daughter who will get you shot! On his return Rex more or less was done, it was time to hang up the gigging boots and do some real work, the type us mere mortals do day in day out - “I needed to, I was done in. I got a job at the showground and then as a crane driver - I needed to be normal.” Would it last? Well for nigh on a decade yes, until Lloyd Watson and Jimmy Luff coerced him into playing bass with them. “We were a great trio, probably the best I’ve played with, we played all over the place, I loved it, the break did me good.” To this day you can still find him playing, sat on the drums behind Les Woods and the band - why? “Why do you think? I love it! I’m not the most musical or technical of musicians but I get up there and entertain - I’m a showman.” Just like his dad then. Rex has a beautiful wife, Romy, who he first dated in the late 50’s but got back with and married only recently. I know Rex won’t mind me calling him ‘the grand old man of music’, but he is. The two hour conversation I had with him and Romy really was uplifting and humbling. I dare say that there are some hidden longforgotten treasures in Rex’s mind but at 68 years-old he’s entitled to forget the odd bit of mischievousness and chaos. Kids, you didn’t invent Rock ‘n’ Roll… Rex Gates and his like did.

VOODOO FAREWELL

Everyone and their dog, including the ESP posse, turned out to Voodoo’s final gig at The Cherry Tree on Oundle Road. The band played two extended sets during the evening with Nick Pooley, the band’s original vocalist (a little worse for wear on drink!), joining Richard the current vocalist to belt out a couple of their classic numbers. The crowd was buzzing and The Cherry Tree came into its own as a great live music pub.

The last few days remain to register your band to take part in the UK’s biggest search for unsigned talent. Road to V is back for its fifth year, with online registrations being accepted until Sunday April 6. So to win the chance to be sharing a stage with the likes of Muse, you’d better crank up the amp, fire up the fretboard and upload your best track to the website. Top British saxophonist, Snake Davis, is touring with his band in celebration of his eighth album release ‘Talking Bird’. Often wrongly described as a Jazz player, Snake is more widely known for his sax solos on tracks such as M-People’s ‘Moving On Up’ and Take That’s ‘A Million Love Songs’. He has also played and recorded with artists ranging from James Brown, Paul McCartney and Amy Winehouse; having recorded on more than 400 tracks in recent years for over 60 artists. This band has been two years in the making and it looks like it’s been well worth the wait. It has to be done if you’re interested in rugby – a Six Nations match, and Paris is by far my favourite away trip. The chance to remember some schoolboy French – ‘ou est la toilette?’ and ‘an autre bier, s’il vous plait’ - and the chance to enjoy good food and wine! Leaving in the early hours of a Saturday morning with three other rugby freaks Doug, David and Neil from our base just outside Paris we were soon arriving at the Gare du Nord around midday. A short stroll to the Terminus Nord restaurant and we were met by our French hosts Phillipe, Henri and Alex – three former French rugby players who were keen to tell us by just how many points we were due to come second later that day. With kick off not until 9pm that evening (yes, 9pm!) we were obliged to spend some three hours having lunch and sampling some wine. Everywhere we went the white and red shirts of England rugby supporters were clearly to be seen enjoying the atmosphere with the slightly strained singing of various rugby songs floating from the packed bars. It was soon time to jump into the stretched limo for the short trip to the magnificent Stade de France. The tented village around the stadium comprising of several shops, cafes and bars was a buzz of anticipation as the 80,000 spectators jostled their way into the ground (thank goodness the beer was all alcohol-free!)

After eleven victories from thirteen matches prior to the top of the table clash with Milton Keynes, Posh are firmly in the box-seat to go up into League One but still face clashes against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday April 5 at Adams Park and promotion rivals Hereford United on Saturday April 19. The club also take on in-form Stockport County on Saturday April 12 before the final scheduled game of the season against Darlington on Saturday May 5. The game with Darlington is ALL-TICKET for Posh supporters.

Then back to the restaurant at the Gare du Nord and chance to relive every aspect of the match with our French companions, celebrate England’s success and eventually say our goodbyes in the early hours of Sunday morning… slightly worse for wear!

Meanwhile, Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has again demonstrated his commitment and determination to realise the ambitions of the football club by offering highlyrated striker Craig Mackail-Smith a new four-and-a-half year contract, keeping him at the club until 2012. Darragh, who flew into the country to tie up the deal, was delighted that one of his talented players had committed their long-term future to Posh and confirmed it was a sign of the club’s intent to make progress through the divisions. Darragh told ESP – “It’s made my day that we’ve been able to finalise all of the details. It’s something we’ve been working on for the last couple of weeks and it’s great that one of our major assets has secured his future at the club on a long-term deal. Craig, Aaron Mclean, George Boyd and Charlie Lee are all on long term deals and we’ve managed to secure Jamie Day this year as well. We have an average age of 23 or 24 in our squad and we want to make sure they stay with us. We’re not a selling club and this news is fantastic for everyone connected with Peterborough United.”

SERPENTINE GREEN SHOPPING CENTRE BACKS PETERBOROUGH LIONS

Peterborough Lions are celebrating a fantastic sponsorship deal with Serpentine Green Shopping Centre for 2008. It follows their win against rivals Peterborough RUFC in the semi final of the Hunt’s and Peterborough County Cup. The Lions then went on to defeat Deeping RUFC to take the cup for the third year running! The deal will ensure that the success at the club will continue and allows the club to start to involve schools and the community. “This is a great deal for us,” said Lions’ director Mike Kenny, “we’re proud to have Serpentine Green on board. I would like to publicly thank the centre manager Dennis Baldry for his support.”

KERRY & BECCA HIT THE ICE WITH THE LEGENDS

What a night! Sunday March 16 saw the 'Legends of Peterborough' Ice Hockey game take place at the Peterborough Arena and the ESP crew were there to capture all the fun.

ESP supported the night and our Paparazzi crew were in the arena capturing the fans (see P. 34 and 35) while our Face of ESP Kerry Bates hit the ice for a special shoot out along with ESP’s Becca Evans. The pair caused chaos!

“I really enjoyed my time at the ice hockey,” laughs Kerry, “especially as Becca and I beat the Refs and got more pucks in the net! Everyone had to lay loads of carpet down for us both so we wouldn’t slip over on the ice as we didn’t realise they wanted us to take part and had put our high heels on - typical! “It was a great night with a huge crowd, I would definitely like to go again... maybe next time they’d trust me to actually skate on the ice!”

A sold out Arena saw players from the last 25 years of Peterborough Ice Hockey take to the ice for a once in a lifetime game. Included in the game were Granville Raper and the Hunter Brothers who originally set up the club back in 1982, Ellwyn Dawkins who played against the Pirates in the first ever game, and some of the best Canadians ever to have played in this country. At 60 years-old, the oldest player to take to the ice was Garry Unger, who before coming to play in the UK spent 16 years in the NHL where he earned the 'Iron-Man' title for playing over 900 consecutive games, a feat only achieved by one other player.

Also honoured on the night were Bill Glover who has worked for the club as Physio and equipment manager since 1982, and the five players who’ve had their numbers retired by Peterborough Ice Hockey.

If you want to catch some more action from the real experts on the ice, (with no high heels in site!) head along to support The Phantoms in the Play-Offs as they take on Guidlford Flames on April 5 at home and then away against Romford on April 6. The Phantoms are hoping to make the Play-Offs a 'White Out' with hundreds of small white towels being handed out at the Cup Final and opening Play-Off games. Fans are asked to wave them when the team comes onto the ice and when the team scores, to help hieghten the atmosphere at the Bretton rink. The idea is taken from the NHL in North America where it has become a firm tradition in the Play-Offs.

Youth training sessions with their academy are open to all youth that turn up and want to be a part of team sport. (U11’s) Years 1-6 sessions run at Peterborough High School every Saturday 9.30 – 11am. (U18’s) Years 7-12 sessions are at the Thomas Deacon Academy every Sunday morning. All you need is comfortable sportswear and trainers and if you want to learn more bring a gum shield! “Playing rugby doesn’t have to be fierce, we want to get kids playing out in the fresh air, it can build confidence and self esteem as well as keeping you fit,” said Andy Moore, club chairman .
