On the music front, April 4 is a night for the diary. Polish your spurs and prime your pistols it’s Country and Western night. Yeeehah! THE REST OF THE SCHEDULE… GREGG NUNNEY Mixed Doubles 9am – 10am and Golden Years 2pm – 3pm “I’m hosting two brand new shows during the week - Mixed Doubles - a show that let's you BOGOF! Literally, ‘buy one get one free’! Email gregg@lite1068.com and tell me what artist you'd like on the show, and the next day we could play you two in a row from them! I’m also hosting a revamped Golden Years show in the afternoon."

IAN SHARPE 3pm – 7pm

There’s a new voice over your cornflakes as it’s Gary Ball not Keith Dalton who now gets you out of bed in the morning… in radio terms that is! Keith’s returned to his ‘spiritual home’ on Lite FM 106.8 hosting the lunchtime ‘Talking Peterborough’ show and now cheeky Gary Ball is the guy setting his alarm clock alarmingly early! Lunchtimes have always suited Keith with his mix of banter, guests and competitions and well… he’s keen for a lie in! “I’ve loved doing the Early Morning Wake-up, it’s been a fantastic experience but after nearly two years I wanted to get back to a normal routine… and frankly have chance to nip down the pub again at night! I’m sure Gary will be great and I’m happy to be back keeping you company over lunch.” Gary’s been used to the fast pace of the drive time show which he’s hosted for over a year but admits he’s struggling a little getting used to the early start.

Ian's show's something new - a close look at everything that makes the local area tick, with some great competitions and games too.

“Keith has done such a fantastic job on breakfast and he has such a huge following who I really hope will like what they hear and then stay tuned for Keith at 10am with ‘Talking Peterborough’. I did ask if Mrs Dalton would perhaps give me an early morning call as she’s been so used to Keith creeping about early. Keith thought it was a good idea, Mrs Dalton wasn’t so keen…” Keith’s regular guests have all moved with him like Michael Cross from the Key Theatre, but he’s inherited a few of the ESP crowd too with editor Sharon McAllister giving a what’s on round up on a Tuesday, Susan Saunders talking showbiz and gossip on Wednesdays at noon followed by Pep Cipriano at 12.30 and Kerry Bates talking films on a Thursday. He’s also brought back the popular ‘Odd One Out’ competition. The city radio station’s celebrating ten years on the air this year and Gary’s confident he can add a fresh twist to breakfast. “I won’t be taking myself seriously that’s for sure. It’s all about having a giggle when we wake up and get ready to start the day. We have some great competitions and we’ll be following our local sports teams with Barry Fry who I’ll be chatting to on a Friday. “The great thing about Lite is that we are local and we can talk about what’s happening locally. I really want people to call in and feel comfortable to be part of their breakfast show. “If there’s a boot sale or someone’s raising money for charity, then come on and tell us about it. If a story, be it locally or nationally has broken overnight, then Simon Potter will have it and be first to tell everyone in Greater Peterborough and we’ll have all the latest traffic and travel. “I want to be out and about as much as possible and I’d like to be involved with local businesses and local charities.”

Programe controller Gregg Nunney is excited about the new line-up. "Keith Dalton is one of Peterborough's best loved personalities - and he's been hosting our Breakfast Show for nearly two years now. He's decided he wants to give the early mornings a miss, so we've had a shuffle round to get him back on Talking Peterborough - our Lunchtime show that Keith had made his own for the best part of a decade! It's our tenth birthday this year - that's ten years of quality local radio for the local area! "I'm so excited that Gary has agreed to do our new Breakfast Show - he's one of the best Presenters I've ever worked with and I'm sure he's going to become an instant hit."

ESP’S GREEN FESTIVAL FASHION SHOW IS COMING SOON! As part of ESP’s tenth anniversary celebrations this year we’re staging or supporting events under our banner of ‘Perfect 10’. The next one we’ll be getting behind is the city’s Green Festival by helping stage a great eco fashion show. Launching on May 23 on Bridge Street and the Cathedral Grounds this year’s Green Festival theme is fashion and food. Of course, going green doesn’t mean you need to compromise on style – come along to a ‘Swish’ event at Peterborough Museum on May 26. It’s basically like a posh swap shop – Face of ESP Claire Smith will be there, armed with her old (but still lovely!) clothes, ready to swap them for something unique. Image guru Sue Donnelly will also be there to advise on what suits you best. We’ll also be supporting the Eco Fashion Show on May 28 where ESP’s Claire Smith, the ESP Dance Crew and some of our regular models will be taking to the catwalk in Queensgate. They’ll be modeling clothes designed by students at Peterborough Regional College, New College Stamford and Arthur Mellows Village College. It’s a great chance to pick up some tips from the students on making cool, customized clothes out of old ones – not only will you look bang on trend, but it’s also very cheap and incredibly green! We’ll keep you posted on all the other events, but for more information visit www.pect.net, or pick up a brochure from the Library, Tourist Information or Museum.

ESP BACKS THE MIDNIGHT WALK This year its ESP’s tenth anniversary and we’re celebrating in style, with our ‘Perfect 10’ events running throughout the year. On May 16, ESP’s Susan Saunders – and whoever else she can round up – will be taking part in Sue Ryder Care’s Midnight Walk. Last year, over 1,000 women took part and managed to raise £110,000 towards Thorpe Hall Hospice. This year, the organisers are aiming to get 1,500 women involved and to raise £150,000 – sounds like a challenge! It’s a great girly night out, starting at Serpentine Green, then walking along a 12 mile torch-lit route around Peterborough. Follow Susan’s example and get a few friends together for a magical evening which will make a real difference to the lives of local people. Of course, there’s no excuse for the men not getting involved too, as the organisers need people to be marshals. Entry is £12, which includes a T-shirt and goody bag, visit www.suerydercare.org/events.php/383/midnight_walk or call 01733 330060.

MINI METRO? MORE LIKE MASSIVE METRO! Club nights of a different kind are being promised at Metro, the city’s newest venue located on London Road near the Posh ground. This place is HUGE! It comfortably holds more than 1,000 people and has been laid out like a ‘proper’ night club with a massive dancefloor, plenty of chill-out seating areas, a VIP room and a bar longer than the Wall of China. There’s also a cosy Egyptian-themed bar tucked away in the corner, perfect for exchanging phone numbers and loving gazes. There’s a bottle of bubbly up for grabs for the best dressed person each night and more importantly a free taxi service to the club from the town centre (outside Tesco) from 10 to 11.30pm. If you miss this slot, grab an A2B taxi and they’ll discount the fare. Manager Brian Hamilton showed me around what will soon be the VIP room but I won’t be allowed in the club with a hoodie despite being pictured with one in this photo (I popped in on the way to KFC). I say this with every new venue that opens in our city - please get down there and support it otherwise businessmen will eventually stop investing in the Peterborough night scene for good. DJ DAN AVAILABLE FOR HIRE He may look like he’s just turned 14 but Dan Santoro is in fact a good 10 years older, a friend of mine and a serious up and coming local DJ. Dan’s already played numerous sets where he’s brought the tech electro house London scene to our city. Influenced by the music scene at ‘The End’, ‘AKA’ and ‘The Cross’, he’s looking to perform everywhere and anywhere. Email danjyboy22@hotmail.com for details – and ask him about the girl with a hunchback…

GET MOIST AT ANGELS For reasons that I’m sure are hardly biblical, Easter day (night) will see city table dancing club Angels transformed into a night club. Labelled ‘Moist’, the event I’m told will feature gimp mask DJs, bongo players, burlesque dancers, fetish dwarfs and blow-up dolls. If you like your UK funky house (or collect blow-up dolls) then get yourselves down to Angels for what promises to be a fruity night from 10pm through until 6am Easter Monday. Dress code is smart / casual (smart trainers only) and tickets are a fiver in advance or £10 on the night. Get your tickets on: 0790 445 6000 / 07810 512 350 or email moistnightlife@live.co.uk

TALKING IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE 2 You may recall in last month’s column the translation in female language of ‘fine’ and ‘nothing’. Well there’s more. ‘Five minutes’, if she’s getting dressed, means half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you’ve just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.

PEP ON ‘TALKING PETERBOROUGH’ Most of you have been choking on your breakfasts listening to me and Keith Dalton trying to put the world right on Lite FM Wednesday mornings. Now we’re giving you indigestion at lunchtime. Yes, you may have noticed I’ve followed Keith from his breakfast to afternoon switch and you can now catch me on his ‘Talking Peterborough’ show from 12.30 until 1pm Wednesdays. And keep it tuned into 106.8 when I resurface at 7pm until 8pm every Wednesday with Phil Adlam from Posh to co-present ‘Talking Sport’. This live and light-hearted sports show may soon be big enough to warrant its own Facebook group. In the meantime, if you’re connected to local sport and would like to be a guest on our show then email pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk or send me a message on the ESP Magazine Facebook page. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Lite FM presenter Mikey Clarke for all the help and tutorage he’s given me on the way to becoming a (almost) slick (ish) presenter. I’m still guilty of the odd technical boob but I’m learning to use the Force to get me out of trouble like Yoda did when he raised Luke’s shuttle from deep within the murky bog.

STANGROUND SCHOOL REUNION If you attended Stanground School from 1985 until 1990 then join the Stanground School Reunion (85-90) 2010 group on Facebook. School friend Angeline Lenaghan (was Parker) has thrown a lot of hard work at creating this group and is determined to stage a reunion some time in March 2010. There are more than 60 members already and it’s been great sharing some memories from all those years ago. I’m betting I’ll be the only single and childless person there! Let’s see this group grow and I’ll promise to bring (or not bring if preferred) the camera for what promises to be the best reunion Stanground College has ever had!

COOL HAND LUKE Great to see Luke Pasqualino of ‘Skins’ fame hitting the local scene in Stamford last month. He asked me to pose with him to raise his profile. Luke was being swamped by his fans and credit to him for staying cool and keeping his feet firmly planted. He recently caused even more of a stir over at his Dad’s Image International hair salon in Spalding when he turned up with some of the other Skins cast members for a wash and brush up. Kelly Varley from the salon said – “They created a complete frenzy in and around the salon. Customers couldn't get in or out of the salon there were so many people inside. The cast were so lovely and happily posed for photos and signed autographs in-between their pampering! We can't wait for their next visit.”

Luke’s not long returned from the USA where he’s hoping to take his career to the next level. Something tells me he’s got what it takes to do so. Watch this space…

OUR CLAIRE IS BOXING CLEVER! The prizes just keep on coming but it takes more than just pampering treats to look gorgeous like Claire Smith our Face of ESP… you need to keep toned and healthy too. That’s exactly what Claire will be doing with her free fitness equipment supplied by Muscle Finesse as part of her huge pot of prizes since winning the title.

We took Claire along to meet owner Bill Wilson who showed her around his second newly opened store on Bridge Street (near Rivergate) which houses the latest fitness equipment.

shape,” said Bill. “She looks fantastic already but as she’s had an injury the cross trainer will help keep up her fitness levels so she can start running again in future.”

“I was in complete and utter shock when I was allowed to choose anything on the website or from the shop to the value of £500,” said Claire. “I have always dreamed of owning a cross trainer and it had finally come true. Amazingly I still have enough spare to buy some other great things to keep me fit so there's no excuse!”

The other Muscle Finesse store inside the Rivergate centre now solely houses the huge selection of vitamins and supplements available. Muscle Finesse is the official supplier to Peterborough United and Peterborough Rugby Club locally, but also the likes of boxer Ricky Hatton and strong man Geoff Capes’ 2012 Olympic Shot Put team. A dietician is available providing free nutritional advice in store or online.

Claire has been a keen runner and likes to keep fit so with everything from gym balls to Yoga sets, mini steppers to skipping ropes, she was spoilt for choice to spend the rest of her prize money. One thing’s for certain though, she’s going to be looking great this year and keeping fit in style. “Cross trainers, bikes and treadmills are all great for adding to your fitness routine at home so I’m sure Claire will be able to keep in

Bill was a successful kick boxer and is a big supporter of a range of local sports. He’s recently opened a new boxing gym in Woodston training pro fighters and stocks a large range of boxing equipment in the new store. It doesn’t stop there though, with an even larger range to buy on www.musclefinesse.com. Guys (and girls) interested in kick boxing can find all they

need and of course there’s also great sports equipment and clothes from names like GASP clothing, Reebok and Lonsdale. So whether you’re into home gym equipment, pounding a punch bag, simply keeping fit or a dedicated body builder we reckon you’ll be sorted… sadly unlike Claire you’ll have to cough with some cash, but Bill assures us his prices are trim!

Not just for the ultra girly among us, hot pink is now back as a major contender for this season’s hottest colour. Paler skin tones and redheads may want to avoid this shade as it does tend to clash. Give the colour an edgy look with lots of bold accessories.

This season a lighter shade of orange, coral along with electric blue is THE colour to be seen in this spring/summer. What makes it great is that it can suit all skin tones and looks particularly good in the summer sun! Coral accessories are huge too, with rings being supersized and it looks great teamed with gold. Lydia is wearing a gorgeous shade of coral with a rocky edge, the oversized T-shirt looks fab with a skinny belt and leggings.

Often seen as a colour for the brave, red doesn’t have to be daring! Jess wears a red floral wrapover dress which is flattering for all body shapes and the colour isn’t so bright. This will suit a variety of skin tones.

Purple has been the shade du jour since last autumn/winter and it’s still going strong. As with all of the colours, if you don’t fancy braving a full outfit why not just go for a skirt teamed with a black or white shirt or vest top? Block colour skirts are all over the high street, the bow detail on this Dorothy Perkins number is gorgeous and really accentuates the waist.

There is a spectrum of blues on the high street, and it’s a case of anything goes! Navy blue looks beautiful on all skin tones, but why not opt for electric blue for a change? This oneshoulder number is a great style as light chiffon flatters all shapes. Turquoise accessories are everywhere and are a great way of brightening up a little black dress. They also create a real hippy vibe, perfect for those hazy summer nights...

Bright yellow is great when the sun is shining, but that doesn’t happen all that often in this country so be wary that not every skin tone can carry off this shade. Pale yellow/lemon looks lovely on paler skin, however this bright shade sets off a tan and darker skin tones (hence why most people like to leave their bright yellow numbers for the last night of a holiday once they have a tan!)

STRICTLY COME ZILCHO! Sometimes it’s hard to pinpoint the highlights of my month, but the last few weeks have seen quite a few, one is going to see one of my best friends sing on the tour of Strictly Come Dancing at Nottingham’s Trent Arena, the lovely Miss Hayley Sanderson! You may remember Hayley was the first to be featured in ESP’s ‘Perfect 10 Success Stories’ series and she’s most definitely a success, appearing on the TV show and now the live tour. It’s an incredible thing seeing her sing in such an amazing capacity; it really is what she was born to do! And great fun too was the after party at her hotel where I had the pleasure of chatting away with Craig Revel Horwood, one of the judges from the show. Now there’s a man who not only has incredible talent but despite his ‘Mr Nasty’ TV image, is one of the nicest guys I’ve met along the way. So onward into another month and thank God spring is on the way! If anyone out there has anything interesting going on over the next few weeks get in touch with me at the office on: 01733 579707.

PETRA AND THE GIRLS DOING THEIR BIT FOR COMIC RELIEF I had the great pleasure of popping into Petra’s Hair and Beauty Salon on Broad Street in Stamford on the Friday of Comic Relief, and the girls there where all dressed in red to raise money for the day. Luckily I managed to escape without having any parts of my body waxed for charity! Maybe next year girls…!

GET IN THE BEER FEST SPRING MOOD AT THE GREEN MAN! Easter weekend at The Green Man on Scotgate in Stamford sees the pubs annual Beer Fest kick off and so I popped in to see the very lovely Asia to find out what’s on offer. The festival is South Linc’s largest pub Beer Festival with over 40 real ales from mainly micro breweries, eight ciders and 20+ bottled Belgian beers. The Festival starts on Good Friday April 10 with music from System who’ll be getting things rocking for the weekend, then it’s Zarakand on Saturday April 11 and Blue Soul Express on Sunday April 12. There will also be a barbecue on so let’s hope the weather gets on form for it!

IT’S ALL GOING ON AT MAMA LIZ’S DARLING! One thing I really wanted to mention this month is a great night I went to over at Mama Liz’s a few weeks ago. They had an art show on in the Voodoo Lounge presented by the super talented Matt James and some of his fantastic art. The main bar had an Irish band on, which included my good friend Lynn Griffin, and then a poker night on in the restaurant area. All this on a normal Wednesday night in Stammy! Keep up the great work all you crazy guys down at Mama’s!

PUB OF THE MONTH (AND YEAR FOR THAT MATTER!)

THE JOLLY BREWER My Pub of the Month has also recently been voted ‘Pub of the Year’ by CAMRA and it’s none other than The Jolly Brewer, situated on Foundry Road in town. Me and my cousin Mike popped in for a game of pool and a pint and the pub really does have a great vibe! Dean the landlord has been at the pub for three years now and it really has become a cracking spot so no wonder they’ve won this coveted award. If you’re into your real ale they have a massive range including Oakham Ales and my personal favourite, Tydd Steam. Well done guys!

THIEF GETS STAFF IN A PICKLE Staff in Sainsbury’s in Bedford are brie-ing driven em-mental by a cheeky thief who’s making e-dam nuisance of himself nicking cheese. Apparently the thief likes to cheddar-gorge himself on the stinky dairy snack and has stolen so much that staff now keep it locked in security boxes. It surely must be driving them Jacobs crackers. www.espmag.co.uk ( April )

I hate to say “I told you so,” but was there anyone in the whole world who was actually surprised to read that Kerry Katona and Mark Croft were getting divorced … then didn’t… then might…who really knows what’s the latest with this on-off pair? For ages now, we’ve heard allegations of drugs and other women, and read reports of apparent financial difficulties whilst staring incredulously at pictures in the tabloids of yet another shiny, top of the range super car being delivered to their Warrington driveway. All in all, it’s fair to say that the news that all was not well chez Katona was about as shocking as Danielle Lloyd being ‘secretly’ photographed in a bikini snogging a footballer. So how will Kerry cope with these intensely difficult and ever changing ups and downs in her traumatic personal life? By being followed night and day for the next two months by an MTV camera crew of course! Yes, hot on the heels of ‘Kerry Katona – Crazy in Love’ (oh the irony), brace yourself people for ‘Kerry Katona – The Divorce… probably’ where we can expect to see, warts and all, the complete journey from wake up call to (if she gets round to it) decree absolute. As if seeing her on the operating table getting her pendulous breasts reduced wasn’t enough, but I guess the money to pay the lawyers must be earned somehow.

CHOC FU LL OF STUPID IDEAS In a stupid bid to solve the obesity crisis, proposals have been put forward for the Government to impose a tax on chocolate. So let me get this straight, in the current economic climate where, let’s face it, most of us are skint, energy prices are high, many people are under the threat of redundancy, house prices are rubbish and life is generally a bit pants, those who have nothing better to do than read a few stats and write reports think that the answer is to make us even more miserable by bankrupting us if we fancy one of the very few relatively inexpensive treats we have left. One word to prove that imposing extra tax on things we like won’t make us stop – smoking. And it’s a very brave man (there’s no way a woman would be behind this scheme, they’d be a disgrace to the sisterhood even suggesting we give up chocola te) that tries to come between a stressed out girl and her Minstrels. Here’s a novel idea, in the current economic climate, where most of us are skint, energy prices are high etc etc, instead of creaming even more of our pennies off us by taxing our little treats (although I’m prepared to stand up and defend my belief that Galaxy, rather than being a treat, is essential to my wellbeing), why not subsidise fruit, veg and other healthy food and make them cheape r? When you look at how much we’re being fleeced for the average cucumber, tin of tomatoes, packet of chicken fillets or box of bran flakes, it seems like a blooming sensible idea to me. Which is precisely why Mr Report Writer will never suggest it.

I’D RATH ER HAVE A SAUSAG E And speaking of stupid food ideas, animal rights group PETA have been offered a gym towel used by George Clooney and planned to clone perspiration from it to use as food flavouring for tofu to boost and promote vegetarianism. Now you’ll get no arguments from me that me half an opportunity!) but have gorgeous George looks good enough to eat (just give Yuck! tofu?! mean, I ting? disgus you ever heard of anything more

MOVE OVER TO THE DARK SIDE THIS EASTER With Easter fast approaching and Easter Eggs already on the shelves I’m sure many of us will be over indulging in too much chocolate this April. But fear not, I have good news for all you chocolate lovers out there – chocolate CAN be good for you! Studies show that eating dark chocolate may contribute to improved cardiovascular health as it’s extremely high in natural antioxidants, containing more flavanoids even than Green Tea. It’s also been proven that dark chocolate can help to reduce blood pressure, improve blood flow, has anti-clotting effects and even helps prevent plaque forming in the arteries. Why does chocolate make us feel good? It’s not just the delicious taste that makes us feel good, chocolate, especially dark chocolate, helps to stimulate the production of endorphins which give us that feel good factor. It also contains serotonin, which acts as an anti-depressant and allows the level of dopamine in your brain to remain higher for longer, lifting depression and producing feelings of well being. Surprisingly, dark chocolate contains many of the vital minerals we require as part of a healthy diet. Magnesium can help to reduce type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease whilst potassium helps lower the risk of having high blood pressure or suffering a stroke. Iron is also naturally found in cocoa and is very important when it comes to overall good health. You may also be pleased to know that cocoa contains a high level of the ‘beauty mineral’ sulphur, helping to give you strong hair and nails as well as healthy skin. However, despite all these benefits, dark chocolate still contains sugar, fat and is high in calories so the key is to enjoy it in moderation. But whatever you do over the Easter period try to avoid milk and white chocolate as milk interferes with the absorption of the antioxidants, dramatically reducing the health benefits of eating moderate amounts of dark chocolate. If you’re still not convinced and plan to avoid the good stuff altogether and the strain it puts on our waistline then why not indulge in a different type of chocolate heaven but minus the calories? Mark Hill Gorgeous Brunette Chocolate to Espresso Shampoo – infused with cocoa, sea silk and coffee bean, it leaves your hair gorgeously glossy. Bourjois Delice De Poudre Bronzing Powder – in the shape of a chocolate bar and with a sweet chocolate fragrance you’ll never crave chocolate again. Smells and looks good enough to eat. Body Shop Cocoa Butter Lipcare stick – try smoothing on this moisturising lipcare stick next time you have an appetite for chocolate.

SPRING CLEAN YOUR SKIN REGIME With Spring on the horizon and temperatures hopefully hotting up why not ensure that your skin is looking as fresh as a daisy? Chances are that after the harsh winter weather your skin needs a little TLC. Follow these five simple steps for fresh, glowing skin.

1. CLEANSE Using a gentle cleanser helps to remove dead skin cells and impurities from the skin. Cleansing milks help to also hydrate the skin, leaving it refreshed and radiant.

2. TONE Toner helps to balance the skin back to its normal pH level. A vitamin and mineral enriched toner will brighten skin and provide extra antioxidant protection. Try Body Shop Vitamin E Hydrating Toner, £6.35, available from Queensgate to give you smooth, soft skin.

3. EXFOLIATE Regular exfoliation will help get rid of dead skin cells allowing new, bright skin cells to surface. It will smooth and soften skin, opening pores to allow other products to be absorbed more effectively. Don’t just concentrate on your face though, with summer also nearby and more skin on show pay attention to the rest of your body – arms, legs and décolletage need to be cared for too.

4. MOISTURISE Moisturising is an essential part of a good skin care regime for all skin types. Even oily skin needs a light moisturiser to keep it soft and supple. It’s best to moisturise twice a day – once in the morning and once at night.

5. PROTECT Skin is easily damaged by the sun, even during the winter months, which can cause uneven skin tone and premature ageing. Help combat these effects and protect your skin every day by using products that contain an SPF15 at least. As well as the five easy steps above also make sure you drink plenty of water, ideally 1 litre a day, as this hydrates your skin from within and flushes out toxins making it appear brighter and giving you a natural healthy glow. It also helps to stave off cravings.

Having just cleared out my office of piles of papers that have been in the ‘must read pile’ only to find they’re now in the ‘will never read pile’ and deciding to bin them, I guess spring must be on its way. Thankfully, it’s the time of longer days (hopefully of more sunshine), and the feeling of more energy. The season of renewal might well be here, but for many people that vitality or spring in their step probably isn’t (unless your name is Andy Slater AKA ‘Tigger’ – where does he get that energy?)

Some good sources are -

We all get days when we feel tired, maybe through lack of sleep, doing too much or just with our natural biorhythm, but what if this tiredness no get up and go and general feeling of fatigue is there most of the time despite a good night’s sleep?

• Molasses (the stuff left behind after extracting the sugar from the cane)

• Red meat (including liver), fish and poultry • Beans, lentils, cereals and grains • Apricots and raisins

• Green leafy veg

There can be many reasons for ongoing tiredness • Food choices – too much sugar, caffeine, alcohol, refined carbohydrates etc (yes you get the buzz but the drop is pretty harsh!) • Lack of exercise • Hormonal imbalances (including thyroid problems) • Too much techno stuff (computers, TV’s etc.) • Lack of fresh air • Low immunity (particularly viruses) • Dehydration • Depression/feeling low, stress and worry • Low nutritional status.... and much more The most common self prescribed supplement people seem to go for are iron tablets without knowing if they need them or not. It might be one of the most common nutrient deficiencies in certain age groups such as teenagers (especially if they have a diet of junk food), mums to be, the elderly and women of child bearing age, but it shouldn’t be assumed that all tiredness is caused by the lack of this mineral and to start taking an iron supplement without getting tested first. Of course there are certain health conditions that can cause iron deficient anaemia, but for many people their diet is simply lacking in iron rich foods and vitamins such as Folate and B12, junk foods lack all of these nutrients.

(However, good levels of Vitamin C are needed to absorb iron so ensure you increase your fruit and veg intake anyway and/or get a good source Vitamin C supplement) If you are tired after trying a variety of things such as getting more sleep, eating better etc, then your GP should be able to test your iron levels. Don’t just assume you are iron deficient just because you’re tired though - too much iron can be toxic and cause other depletions and health issues! Oh and for the record… a pint of Guinness has very little iron (even though it tastes of it) so don’t try to make that your daily shot of iron, eat some good, healthy food instead! Confessions... Susan Saunders

susan.saunders@espmag.co.uk

Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus/Are Perfect Now, I’ve heard some silly rumours about myself over the years but I’ve been told the current misconception is that I’m an arrogant creature (I’m not) and have no worries with the species of the male variety, well…I do! I am, in fact the real life Bridget Jones; ever-so-slightly overweight and very calamity ridden when it comes to boys. I’ve always been told just to ‘be yourself’ and ‘guys like funny girls with personality’… I beg to differ. Aside from being Bridget, I’m quite thoughtful and a sentimental fool. On hearing that a friend was learning ‘French’; I thought it’d be a nice idea (because I had a crush on him) to drop a ‘Teach Yourself French’ CD round (and despite the photo this wasn’t Pep!) My friend’s thoughts were mixed on this. Some thought “cringe” and others thought “that’s such a sweet thing to do”. Uh oh. It went down like a dozen lead balloons. Forget sentiment, I felt completely embarrassed and may as well have well said - “Bonjour, Je m’appelle Bunny Boiler!” It rang true to me that boys are very different to us girls. Some of my girlfriends and I were sharing embarrassing stories about how things are often misconstrued. *One of the girls was thinking about texting a guy to ask if he fancied going to the cinema or something that night. We were all in agreement that sending a text was no big deal… so we set about drafting the perfect, carefree, non-scary sounding text. Our/her text: Hola. I’m at a loose end tonight and so don’t know if you fancied catching a film or something? I’ve already asked ten other guys so you are my last hope! X (breezy we thought…bur-reeeeezyyyy!) Mr No Name: Look, I know you haven’t asked anyone else...Lol. Think you’re a nice girl but I just don’t want to get into anything heavy. Us (confused and embarrassed for her): Eeeekkkkk! That is NOT what we were expecting!

28

www.espmag.co.uk ( April )

Now hang on a minute, should she be embarrassed? She didn’t just ask him to marry her, merely just to watch a film. This might be a slightly naïve view but shouldn’t the thought process be – ‘Have I seen that film? No. So yes I will go and watch it?’ Apparently there’s no differentiation between walking across to the popcorn counter at the cinema and walking down the aisle. Seriously mate – chill out! Have men slowly morphed into the better sex us women? Gone, so it seems, are the days where us girls over analyse everything (well kinda), we are just quite straight forward. Guys on the other hand, anticipating that us girls are jumping the gun, actually jump the gun/bazucca first. Luckily I have some good boy mates who I can call to hang out with, who get that whilst I’m quite a girly girl, I too can have banter with the boys. I look upon them as this – boyfriends (as in mates) not boyfriends (as in boyfriends). A couple of pointers for guys are these – when a girl asks if you fancy doing something – she does not always mean go out with (as in boyfriend) she means go out with (as in go out with!). When a girl says - “A group of us should all go out”, she will not be the only person waiting to greet you (unless she’s mental). When a girl says - “I don’t want a boyfriend,” she could be telling the truth. Although when a girl says she wants to just be ‘seeing someone’ that means she actually wants a boyfriend. When a girl sends you a text, she will be annoyed if you don’t reply (even if they pretend they’re not bothered). When a girl says she’s ‘fine’ – she generally isn’t. If you disagree with my opinion, don’t worry, I won’t lose sleep over it though if nothing else, take heed of the title. Goodbye.

Susan’s disclaimer (for bureaucratic purposes) * ‘One of the girls’ actually isn’t me by the way! And, no matter what you may hear in the months that follow this article, it still…WAS.NOT.ME! FYI – if you hadn’t realised, I don’t mind laughing at myself, which is a good job really!

Hello ‘ello ‘ello! What’s going on ‘ere then? OK so it was more a case of ‘the big red nose’ than ‘the thin blue line’ but Peterborough police certainly helped create some light relief for Comic Relief. It’s not often the force gets to do something funny for money but there was no stopping local officers from joining in and having a laugh this year. They pounded the beat along Bridge Street during the day rattling their buckets, ‘arresting’ people (lightheartedly!) and claiming bail money for their release all in the name of Red Nose Day. In the evening more officers even spent their spare time manning the phone lines at Coca Cola in Woodston to take the Comic Relief donations until 2am.

PCSO Amanda Butler added - “There’s so much doom and gloom around at the moment that I just wanted to do something useful and help. I’ve set myself a goal to do six charity events this year and this is my second. It’s a fabulous atmosphere and makes you feel good to know you’re helping.” Peterborough Partnership team at the city council. It saw the police, fire service, the Peterborough Saxons American football team and many more doing everything from the conga to a Sub eating competition to raise cash.

PC Bob Stewart had a great time arresting the likes of city council Chief Executive Gillian Beasley and giving kids (big and small!) the chance to try out his police bike for size. “We’ve had such a positive reaction,” said Bob, “and it’s particularly good to see children interacting with us so they don’t grow up just seeing this demonised uniform.” Police community support officers Graham Frisby, Anthony Treadwell and Tracy Smith helped towards the £345.78 total collected by the team during their stint outside the Town Hall. “We had really good feedback,” Tracy told ESP. “People are often shocked to find we’re actually very approachable.

Later on their colleagues donned the red noses and joined volunteers at the Coca Cola call centre taking cash donations throughout the night.

“It’s good to meet the public in a different capacity to normal and they’ve all been very generous.”

Inspector Matt Snow was keen to support the team there which falls under his neighbourhood policing sector, despite being at work from 8am that day! Like the rest he’d even got into the 80s theme the call centre adopted and donned his ‘Choose Life!’ T-shirt as part of team Wham!

The team were taking part in a specially organised fundraising session which entertained the crowds and was put together by the Safer

“We really wanted to get involved in a charity event and this was a great opportunity to get together out of hours as a team,” Matt told us.

Supporting Comic Relief was PCSO Kyle Saunders’ idea - “Some people have never met members of the police and some have a perception we just lock people up! This was a chance to show we do have a heart and an interest in helping a good cause.”

Do something funny for money they said and Peterborough folk duly obliged! The team at the Coca Cola call centre in Woodston manned the phones along with dozens of volunteers as one of 144 call centres across the country and took over £110k in phone pledges! During the day though, their fun and games saw them don 80’s themed fancy dress and raised around £1,700 for Comic Relief. Well done to Hannah Plows and all the generous team there who were great fun! Over in Queensgate the BBC Radio Cambridgeshire (95.7FM) team and breakfast show presenter Paul Stainton bravely de-fluffed themselves in front of the watching crowds! They’d all challenged each other to see who could grow the best facial hair before it was all shaved off and raised £1,200 in the ‘Big Beard Off Campaign’. Outside the Town Hall in Bridge Street staff from the city council gave up their own time to help raise around £1,100 with help from the Police, Fire & Rescue Service, mascots from Posh, The Phantoms and PCC and players from The Peterborough Saxons American Football Team. Subway in Rivergate donated Subs for a sandwich speed eating competition and Asda and WH Smith donated the prizes. All in all it looks like we painted the town red!

Caught in th THE ESP PAPARAZZI CREW GO ON TOUR IN STAMFORD Pep, Becca and Hannah along with ESP’s ‘Stamford Calling’ columnist Matt Zilch hit Stamford town to see what the good people were up to. Their first stop was The Golden Fleece where the lovely landlady gave them free drinks and they were well looked after. The place was packed with plenty of people enjoying a pint and live music from 60s band The Nuggets. Next they headed over to The Millstone where a few people were bravely starting to sit outside in their great beer garden with the weather getting better. It was a busy night with lots of Matt's mates in there! They then headed across the road to All Saints a new pub which focuses more on chat and inexpensive, decent drinks - half a pint is just 90p! The Paparazzi crew sampled some strawberry beer and cider and said it reminded them a little of Smiths in Bourne and gave it the thumbs up. The Crown on Red Lion Square was next and as ever the place was packed, then it was a trip up the hill to The Peartree where the new landlord offered up free drinks all round and the guys were reluctant to leave. The last stop of the night was Browns on Broad Street where the crowd were warming up for a night in Central nightclub while outside, none other than local celeb Luke Pasqualino from Skins was warming up the crowds eager for a photo.

Caught in the act? PETE CARTER TRIBUTE NIGHT A sell out crowd packed the PSL club in New England for the Pete Carter tribute gig last month and Mike Harris was there for ESP to capture the action. The Motivators and 0898 reformed for the gig, the Colin Hodgkinson Trio kindled their set whilst Retrolux and The Lloyd Watson band breezed through their current sets. Murray Hockridge provided the soulful interludes between bands whilst our very own Andy Slater compered the event and badgered people into parting with their cash. The night was all in aid of Alzheimer’s and raised just short of £1500. The gig sold out in hours and the organizers are mulling over whether to do it annually. By the look on the punters’ faces we say it should be a definite guys!

The Saturdays celebs@espmag.co.uk

ESPCELEBS

Interview

They’re named after everybody’s favourite day of the week and are fast becoming the favourite of Pop fans everywhere. Sharon McAllister talks to The Saturdays as they prepare for their first headline tour… The phrase ‘whirlwind success’ springs to mind here. It feels like The Saturdays should’ve been around far longer than they actually have. These five gorgeous girls have already toured with Girls Aloud, had four top ten singles and a top ten album and of course opened Comic Relief for which they also recorded ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’... phew! Not bad going for a band less than a year old. Mollie agrees their level of success is quite amazing – “Everything has just gone so quickly. I can’t believe we’re already on a second album but we’ve just been so lucky. We got such a great response from the Girls Aloud tour and that really could’ve gone one way or the other because we didn’t know if their fans would be welcoming to another girl band but they were so nice and we got such a good reception.” Despite the band’s short lifespan as The Saturdays they’ve all been involved in music for a while with Mollie in various girl bands including Fallen Angels who you may remember made it to boot camp on X Factor. Frankie and Rochelle were in S Club Juniors, Una started out in a rock band and then recorded her own album and toured in Ireland, while Vanessa started out at the Sylvia Young Theatre School and has appeared on stage in the West End.

36

www.espmag.co.uk ( April )

Now success is coming their way, will they end up rivalling the Queens of Pop and doing battle with Girls Aloud in future?

“We’re not at all rivals,” says Mollie, “There’s room for all of us and we’ve got such a different sound. Really they’re like mentors to us, that’s how they were on the tour, they always said we could go to them for advice. “I just feel like it’s our time now to go out there and make the most of everything we’ve been given,” says Mollie. “I just think we’re so lucky to be in The Saturdays and really want to achieve everything we’ve ever dreamed of.” Of course with five rather nice looking girls all brought together and enjoying pretty instant success the accusations that they’re just another ‘manufactured’ group are doing the rounds, but Mollie brushes that off. “People are always going to say that about Pop, they never really tend to say that about Indie do they? I doubt all the Indie bands grew up practicing in their dad’s garage, you know, there still has to be auditions for that. “We have such a huge say in everything we do. We have our styling meetings and get a big say on what we wear and we’ve always had a big say in our videos and our music, we do work with the label - they have good advice - but we do have a big say though. “On our second album we’re writing songs so the more we can be involved the better really.” “We want as much of us and our personalities in there as possible,” adds Frankie, “and that’s what fans would prefer to see, we just want to be as much ourselves as we can.”

Recently of course the girls followed in the footsteps of other top girl bands and opened Comic Relief, it was obviously a real buzz for the band and there’s still an air of excitement when it’s mentioned. “It was incredible, opening the show was just such a huge, huge thing for us,” enthuses Mollie. “I think it’s probably the biggest thing we’ve done, it was such an honour.” Now the girls have to hold their own on tour, are they at all daunted by headlining so early on in their career? “Not at all,” says Mollie “we’ve all been waiting for this since we were like four, it’s something we’ve dreamt of so I absolutely can’t wait. We’ve just added more dates which shows how well it’s selling so we’re really pleased.” “We just want to have a party and have a good time and for everyone watching to have a good time,” enthuses Frankie. “We’re a Pop band and we know what we’d want from a Pop band if went to see them so we’re just going to have a good time. “It’ll be amazing just knowing that on the tour everyone’s come to see just us and it’s going to be an amazing experience.” So what’s been the secret of their success I wonder, when so many others try and fail in this industry. “I think we’ve just done everything we possibly could’ve,” says Mollie “we’ve taken every opportunity we’ve been given and just been really hard working and super keen in everything. I think people respect that. Obviously we’ve got really good songs, we’ve been really lucky that way. The performances we do are our best and I think it’s just hard work and we’re having fun and I think people can see that and they like that.”

Central & Brownes is Stamford and the surrounding area’s No. 1 venue Open Wednesday & Thursday (10pm-2am) - Friday & Saturday ( 10pm-3am )

FREE ENTRY B4 11 (except Saturday)

No doubt their success will be inspiring more wannabes but Mollie believes if you stay focussed and know what you want you can indeed make it happen. “Just keep working and be specific in what you want to do. As I grew up I never wanted to be just famous, I wanted to be a singer and I wanted to be a Pop singer so make sure you know exactly what you want to do and if it is a singer there’s so much you can do these days so don’t give up. I went to X Factor and got knocked out at boot camp, you know you will get knock backs but if you really, really want it, you’ve just got to keep working hard!” www.thesaturdays.co.uk The tour starts June 5, tickets are on sale at www.gigsandtours.com

Italian Style

If you’ve ever been on hols in Italy you’ll know all about that famous Italian welcome and great tasting fresh food. That’s what you get at Topo Gigio and that’s why this city centre restaurant is still going strong.

£8.50. Their daily specials are hugely popular and their range of classic desserts such as Tiramisu and profiteroles are always too tempting. All the food is fresh and prepared on the premises which gives the guys the edge when it comes to great flavours and flexibility. You want something a little different to what’s on the menu? No problemo! They even have gluten free pasta and pizza dough.

Not quite as long as its namesake maybe – Topo Gigio is a famous mouse puppet in Italy (as big as Mickey Mouse over there!) who’s just celebrated his 50th birthday – but Topo’s been a staple on the restaurant scene in Peterborough for many years. For almost the last eight it’s been in the capable hands of Paulo Loureiro and Manuel ‘Manny’ De Aguiar who both have a strong catering background ( Paulo worked at The Savoy and Manny at restaurants in South Africa) and have fulfilled their dream of owning and running their own restaurant. The menu has been broadened so not only do you get great pizza and pasta but also fabulous fish and meat dishes and some succulent steaks the likes of which you won’t find elsewhere for the price. These guys promise a 12oz steak actually weighs that when it hits your plate! Their Filletto al Formagio (12oz steak cooked in Stilton cheese and mushrooms) is £19.95 and one of their specialities, but their range of steaks is attracting customers from far and wide.

“Nothing comes from a jar here, it’s all authentic Italian cuisine.” The range of dishes isn’t too mind boggling but extensive enough to give you choice and now some lighter style dishes have been launched for the spring such as Tortellini Vesuviana (filled with Parma ham, fresh tomato, mozzarella and basil) for

38

www.espmag.co.uk ( April )

“Our Italian chef Alfredo has been with us for three years and prepares everything each day,” says Manny. “Nothing comes from a jar here, it’s all authentic Italian cuisine. I say ‘you’ve tried the rest, now try the best’ as we’re an independent, genuine Italian restaurant!”

There’s a particularly vibrant atmosphere on busier nights when you really do get the Italian treatment and Paulo says they aim to offer a friendly and relaxed experience. “Customers know they can come in here and just be themselves. They are treated as if they are in Italy and don’t have to be too dressed up if they just want a relaxing night, or they can let their hair down if it’s more of a fun evening out.” Whether it’s a working lunch or a birthday party, whatever time of day and whatever the occasion you’ll always get a welcome at Topo’s. On busy nights there’s an upstairs bar when you can chill out while you wait for a table and select from their well balanced wine list which ranges from a quality house Merlot through to a fabulous Barollo.

Topo Gigio, 36 Cowgate, Peterborough. Tel: 01733 344122. Open Monday – Saturday, 12 noon to 2.30pm, 5.30pm ‘til late. Sunday 5.30pm ‘til late.

LOCALFOOD FOOD REVIEWS

EMBE 83 Thorpe Road, Peterborough. Tel: 01733 873003 It can be quite difficult to escape the pasta and pizza style restaurants in the area so I was very happy to get the nudge that a Caribbean restaurant has opened on Thorpe Road. Embe is situated in the Thorpe Lodge hotel just past the hospital on the left. So what’s it like? Well don’t be put off by the ‘hotel’ feel of the room, get your head past that and the food is superb. I started with Gambas and mushrooms finished off with cashews - absolutely stunning. The prawns were a perfect texture and the Embe seasoning was as tasty as it gets. My dining partner Tracy had plantain ring stuffed with beef and coriander, again just spicy enough to be able to make out the wonderful flavours. For mains I chose Jack fish… basically because I’d never heard of it! You know when people say that a certain fish is the texture of steak? Well this was

more like meat than fish in its make up but still a definite fish taste. It was accompanied by a very light vegetable rice and crisp salad, perfect. Tracy had chicken in creamy lentil sauce with cassava chips, a bit like a giant parsnip and sweet potato. I was reliably informed that the chicken was succulent and the sauce not too over powering, I tried the chips and they were a little too starchy for me, but, they all disappeared! We resisted puddings as we didn’t want to explode… They also have the Caribbean favourite Ackee and salt fish and if you’re a veggie then it’s fish or vegetable dishes. Lunch is served with nothing over £7 and our meal cost about £15 a head which, with a couple of beers is good value. One point worth noting though, the service is friendly but not quick, don’t expect to nip in for a 40 min food scoff, everything is cooked fresh so be prepared to wait. Thank you to Popolino, our lovely waitress and Nicholas our chef, they can be called on 01733 873003 to book your table. Andy Slater

VERVE Church Street, Peterborough. Tel: 01733 561723 If you hadn’t heard, Verve on Church Street is under new ownership, refurbished and looking good. This place has loads of potential situated in the centre of town with a fantastic beer garden at the back and a fresh and airy design, so it should come into its own as the weather improves. It’s now run by Sian and Daniel, who’ve both worked at the venue for several years (so know their stuff) and tell us the food is cooked from scratch and locally sourced. The new menu also includes a ‘2 for £10’ deal available from 12 – 4pm Monday to Saturday which includes favourites like chicken curry, burgers, sausage an mash, chilli and fish and chips. We dropped by for lunch, sampling their special of the day which was a tasty Bolognese (£6.25) while my colleague’s ciabatta was a flavoursome hunk of bacon, cheese and mushroom which according to him was a treat. The bacon was crisp but not over done whilst the cheese was strong enough but not too overpowering. The ciabbata was warm and crunchy yet soft in the centre and the salad as fresh as it comes. Come to think of it he didn’t say a lot while eating... a great inexpensive lunchtime treat was his verdict! In time they’re hoping to introduce an internet café style service too so you’ll be able to surf while you dine. Sharon McAllister

THE GREAT ESCAPE… Come the weekend it’s time to break out and get yourself some exercise, fresh air and gorgeous food you haven’t had to cook yourself. Head out to The Kings Head at Apethorpe and you can enjoy a healthy stomp through the countryside, and then settle down for some fine food and a well earned glass of wine or pint of real ale. Sounds idyllic to us! The pub has come a long way since Julia and Steve took charge and in the last year they’ve managed to buck the trend and are busier than ever which says it all really. They’ve redecorated this charming country pub, run successful ‘four eat for three promotions’ and other offers (of which there will be more so keep an eye out in ESP!) and worked hard to create menus which keep bringing the customers back. This gorgeous village is just past Nassington and is only a twenty minute journey from the city centre, fifteen minutes from Hampton or Oundle and ten minutes up the road from Stamford. You’ll soon feel you’re far away from the city limits though, especially if you spot the amazing Red Kites which regularly circle over the pub. You can stick around and enjoy the fantastic country setting and now that Apethorpe Hall has been renovated, if you book through the English Heritage website you can take a tour.

The menu is always changing and all of the dishes are homemade from fresh local produce. Firm favourites include Gorgonzola pork fillet, pan-fried lambs liver, Breton chicken and fish in beer batter with chips and peas. There are frequent theme nights which book up fast, regular curry nights where you can all you can for a tenner and Jazz nights once a month. They stock a full wine list and there are always three real ales on tap – even better you can enjoy a wine or real ale of the week for just £2.50. Now you can even bring a flavour of this country pub to your work place with The Kings Pantry, their corporate catering branch. Ditch the cardboard sandwiches and rock hard pork pie and treat your staff or clients to anything from a gorgeous buffet to canapés and cheese and pâté boards. If you’re throwing a work bash or a product launch, food from The Kings Head’s team will definitely make the right impression. It can all be tailor made to your requirements and as both Julia and Steve come from a corporate catering background you can rest assured you’re in safe hands.

THE YEAR OF THE MINI

THE CLASSIC TURNS 50 The Mini, an icon of British motoring turns 50 this year, and throughout 2009 tens of thousands of Mini fanatics will be celebrating in style. From massive events attracting enthusiasts from all over the world, to gatherings of the like-minded at the local pub, or a few friends giving it a quick blast along their favourite stretch of twisty road, ‘Mini 50’ parties will find their way into every corner of the UK. Mark Robinson, editor of Mini Magazine said -“Very few people today use an old Mini as everyday transport, but the personality cult that began in the car’s early days keeps growing and changing. A Mini today is much more likely to be something for the weekend, whether it’s a cheap but slightly rusty toy, a pristine restored classic, or a wildly modified performance machine. What really ties these diverse enthusiasts together, though, is a real sense of fun.” David Hollis, who runs the British Mini Club said “Can you believe that the classic Mini is 50 yearsold? Most cars that reach that milestone look 50 years-old, and attract people that are 50 years plus, but not the classic Mini — it's in good shape and still looks fresh, and is still attracting owners from all age groups and different backgrounds.

”The team that started production never realised that this little car would touch the hearts of so many and conquer the world with its sporting heritage, celebrity status, and downright fun-to-drive and pleasure-to-own experience. But the thing that’s made the car what it is today is the passion that is given to the car from its owners. These are the people, along with the many clubs, that’ll keep the Mini buzzing around our roads for many decades to come. Long live the classic Mini.” MINI FACTS • Released for sale in August 1959, the Mini was designed by Sir Alec Issigonis as a cheap, economical car for ordinary people. When champion Formula One constructor, John Cooper, gave the engine a few race-inspired tweaks, the Mini jumped effortlessly from the high street to the racetrack. • In the following years it became a class-bending style icon of the swinging sixties, driven by movie stars, pop stars and royalty, as well as ordinary people throughout Britain and beyond. • By the end of the decade it was a movie star itself, with a starring role (alongside Michael Caine) in one of the most unforgettable car chases of all time in ‘The Italian Job’. The classic Mini stayed in production for more than 40 years, the last cars rolling off the production line in 2000. • Key events in 2009 include the London to Brighton Mini Run and the International Mini Meet, better known as the IMM in Mini circles. This year it is being organised by the Birmingham Mini Owners Club, and held at a site opposite the Longbridge factory where most classic Minis were built.

PERFECT TEN

Louise Fox

POWERLIFTER

It’s not often the chat up line a girl gets from the guys is ‘Ooh let’s feel your biceps’ but that comes with the territory when you’re a champion powerlifter! Louise Fox from March hasn’t even been involved in the sport for two years yet, but has already snatched the British, European and World Powerlifting Championship titles and has broken the world Deadlift record. Not bad for a lass who’s 36 years-old, just 5’2 1/2” tall and weighs just over 8st.

Photo: Andy Vernum, Studio One

Louise has always been a little unconventional though; she’s not a complete tomboy but does like to prove you don’t have to be all girlie all the time. Louise is certainly a worthy ‘Success Story’ as far we’re concerned. She’s achieved so much in just 18 months even she can’t quite believe it. “I’ve always been sort of naturally sporty and fairly good at some things,” she tells us “like I was a county champion in athletics and did the 400m. I wasn’t amazing but I was pretty good, I did kick boxing and got to brown belt I was pretty good at that. I did indoor climbing and because I’ve got quite good upper body strength I was quite naturally good at that so I’ve always been fairly good but never amazing at anything until I found this, then I thought my God I have actually found something that I am naturally really good at. It was probably just luck that I found my sporting niche I suppose.” Powerlifting isn’t about turning into some muscle-bound oddball like some female bodybuilders; it’s based more on a brief surge of energy when you lift, rather than endurance. Louise says that despite her sport she’s not given up her girlie side entirely and admits to being hugely soppy about her cats and that she’s very into her family and is a bit of a home maker.

… SUCCESS STORIES “I still like doing make-up and my hair but I suppose I just wouldn’t go out on the town these days looking really girlie I’d probably be dressed a bit more rock chick or sporty. Having won all the top championships already and being crowned the Evening Telegraph’s Sports Woman of the Year – is there anything left to spur her on as she heads into her next season of contests this month?

Louise Fox goes glam thanks to Andrea Connor hair (07801 987905)

“Definitely. You’ve got to defend your title, plus because it’s still only the start of my career I want to get heavier and heavier with my weights. I want to be able to lift more. Plus my main contender is a Bulgarian lady and we were literally head to head so I’ve really got to try and smash what I can against her - that really spurs me on, the competition side of it. “I didn’t think I was a very competitive person, I’m quite a pacifist but when it comes to it, I just get such an adrenalin rush and I just think ‘she’s not going to take my record I’ve got to get it back!”

5 Scotgate, Stamford. Tel: 07792 864982

It’s fair to say most girls wouldn’t be rushing to see how big they can get their biceps so what’s the main thing that makes Louise want to do it? “It’s the performance aspect,” she says. “Although I was quite shy doing these photographs, I think I am quite a show off naturally and it’s brought out that side of me. When you’re up there on the stage and you’ve got a few hundred people shouting your name, you’re up there on your own and it’s just you and the weights and you’ve got to prove that you can lift it, you just get such a buzz. I’ve never felt anything like it, it’s such an exciting feeling it really spurs you on.” It’s been a rapid rise to the top so what’s been her best moment so far? “The biggest buzz I got was in Belgium at the end of last year which was when I did my dead lift record. I was neck and neck with this Bulgarian lady and because I weighed lighter than her I’d got a bit of an advantage so l would’ve won but I didn’t want her to beat me regardless, I wanted to win fair and square and the atmosphere was electric, I’d got all my friends there that were other powerlifters and they were all cheering me on and the buzz and the adrenalin was just amazing so I think if I can recreate that in my competitions this year that’s what drives me really.” Louise will now be defending her championship titles all the way through to November and has a packed year full of competitions. She took voluntary redundancy after working for BT for 17 years and took a career break to focus on her powerlifting, but now she’s looking to get back into the job market and also find more sponsorship, but as it’s not a well known, or Olympic sport, that’s harder than lifting three times her own body weight! “I sent over 80 emails out last year and very few even replied. I belong to a federation but I’m not part of a club, if you’re in a team you get more recognition, plus I’m a female in a male dominated sport so it’s probably a bit different and also I’m older, if I was younger I might stand more chance. “I can do public speaking and promotion, I’m happy to do whatever is needed if businesses will support me.” www.louisefoxpowerlifting.com

SCREENSCENE

MOVIE REVIEW

MARLEY & ME

Released: March 6 Cast: Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston, Alan Arkin - Director: David Frankel NOTHING comes closer to playing it safe for Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston than a critic-proof pet movie. Despite anything I say this will still have the punters rolling into Showcase without tarnishing the leads’ future film pay deals. Dog lovers will empathise with just about everything in this family-friendly flick – encompassing the role of a mutt in day-to-day life from puppy onwards – and to be fair, for the most part, it does it pretty well.

Game On

This mish-mash of a movie sometimes struggles to actually know what it wants to be – starting as a comedy, hinting at a ‘The Break Up’ style darker middle, then turning into a dramatic weepy during the final third – but a lot of cinema-goers will at some point have witnessed similar trials and tribulations with a dog at their side from family or friends.

48

The movie chronicles the fledgling marriage of journalists John Grogan (Wilson) – the novelist on which the story is based – and Jen (Aniston), as the hubby buys his wife a Labrador pup called Marley to put the impending temptation to ‘try for kids’ on the backburner. But due to their busy newspaper column careers spiralling upwards, the couple have bitten off more than they can chew with the non house-trained Marley – which leads to the usual bad dog shenanigans and tomfoolery (dog eats couch, tears up the house due to lightning, poops inside etc) that needs little ‘seen it all before’ explanation. Further down the line, when the couple finally start their offspring, things turn sour as the misbehaving mutt makes life unbearable for the new mom, with two (then a third) screaming kids to handle as well.

RUNES OF MAGIC (PC) Out Now MMORPG’s (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) usually means ‘geek alert’ – so when offered to beta test this free2play title I decided to see what all the fuss was about. Being more at home with console-based RPG’s such as the various incarnations of ‘Zelda’ or action-laced ‘Fallout 3’, it’s not hard to see how die-hard enthusiasts can quickly get embroiled into this vast sweeping world – from both a gaming and social interaction aspect. As a free download with no monthly fees, this title has been touted as a serious contender to the likes of ‘World of Warcraft’ (I had to do my homework!) and went completely live on March 19, after extensive testing, with more than 1,000 quests at launch. And after a couple of hours playing as a warrior – which was simply the ‘tip of the iceberg’ – it’s not hard to see why so many people find these worlds so (ahem) spell-binding.

www.espmag.co.uk ( April )

But through the years, the now infamous Marley proves to be the one constant part of their lives, from the inception of their marriage, which glues them (and family) together through their relationship woes. In fact, the tad overlong ‘Marley & Me’ proves to have the similar ups and downs as the couple, but despite some unnecessary sentimentality, an underdeveloped ‘splitting up’ sub-plot, and a sweet, if gimmicky, ending – Wilson and one-trick pony Aniston coast through in third gear to make this watchable fare. It doesn’t quite have enough bite to make it linger in the memory for too long – but there are more than enough barks to keep the whole family happy.

NERF NSTRIKE (WII)

Out Now ANOTHER in a long line of Wii familyfriendly titles – this Nerf-inspired game is surprisingly intuitive fun. Complete with a Wii remote-attachable ‘Switch Shot Ex-3 Nerf Blaster’ (which can be used separately) packaged with the game, you explore a top-secret Nerf facility across multiple shooting mini-games ranging from pretty dull to addictively engrossing. With more than 25 versions of the Nerf blaster available to play within the game – which includes nice bright visuals but poor voice acting – it offers players a tidy single-player experience before opening up as a little multiplayer gem.

FAST & FURIOUS

MONSTERS VS ALIENS

Released: April 10 Cast: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez Director: Justin Lin

Released: April 3 Voice Cast: Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, Kiefer Sutherland Director: Rob Letterman

AFTER their glittering Oscar-laden careers they’re back where it all started.

THE first big-budget animation of the year hits the big-screen just in time for Easter – and it sounds like it could be an Earth-shattering experience.

Hang on a sec? What’s wrong with that picture? Apologies for that. The original quartet from 2001’s testosterone-fuelled ‘The Fast and the Furious’ are back for the cash! Vin Diesel’s career went on a downward spiral after his ‘Chronicles of Riddick’ sequel bombed, Paul Walker starred in the woeful ‘Furious’ followup and several poor should-have-been-straight-to-DVD action flicks, Jordana Brewster got a chainsaw put through her in the rebooted prequel to ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’, and Michelle Rodriguez was the only person to actually escape the island in Lost – being killed off from the TV series after drink-driving in Hawaii. ‘New model. Original Parts.’ is the tagline as they’re all reunited with Diesel’s Dom Toretto unsurprisingly reigniting his feud with Walker’s cop Brian O’Conner, before (shock, horror) confronting a shared enemy in LA. Joking aside though, this could be just the pre-summer hit to take them all back into the limelight – I already know car-lovers who’ve been salivating at the impressive trailer – and at least director Justin Lin (The Tokyo Drift) has kicked out that annoying country ‘hick’ character played by Lucas Black in the second sequel.

SNK ARCADE CLASSICS & KING OF FIGHTERS COLLECTION (PSP/WII) Out Now YOU must remember the infancy of the 16-bit ‘console war’ between the SNES and Megadrive (or Mario vs. Sonic)? Well there was another graphically superior and ridiculously expensive console that had us glued to those Japanese import console ads – SNK’s ‘dream console’ Neo-Geo. Well you can now have those games in the palm of your hands – either with the portable PSP or swinging your Wii remote. Out of the two compilation packages, SNK just pips it with its variation and scope for longevity – the original ‘Metal Slug’, ‘Shock Troopers’ and ‘World Heroes’ are all included – with ‘Fighters’ (which boasts five versions from ’94-98), complete with more than 60 combatants from the 2D worlds of fighting, proving more specific. Both efforts have been superficially spruced up with inviting menus and reward systems, but the graphics, whilst nostalgic, have only been ‘ported’ from their 16-bit origins – leaving ‘Fighters’ in particular for die-hard ‘fanboys’ only, with ‘SNK’ appealing to a wider retro-gaming enthusiast audience.

/

When aliens invade the planet, the president gives the last resort order to release a group of top secret monsters – led by super-sized 50ft Californian girl Susan ‘Ginormica’ Murphy (Reese Witherspoon) who was hit by a meteorite (you don’t hear that every day) to help save humanity. It’s helmed by Rob Letterman who directed one of Dreamworks’ weaker outings in ‘Shark Tale’ but from a studio that boasts ‘Shrek’ it should be a license to print money, especially as it’s also in 3D. In another family-friendly movie with a similar ‘alien’ theme, cabbie Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson tries to help two kids (Anna Sophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig) who have supernatural powers and protect the from being exploited in Disney’s ‘Race to Witch Mountain’. This reboot of the seventies franchise should do exactly what it says on the tin as ‘The Rock’ teams up again with ‘The Game Plan’ director Andy Fickman (released April 10).

BY ROYLE APPOINTMENT Have you seen the new Government / NHS information advert telling people how to recognise if someone's had a stroke? You know the one... 'When Strokes strike think F.A.S.T' says the ad before making an acronym out of the word fast. If you listen carefully you'll recognise that Sue Johnstone who plays Barbara in the 'Royle Family' does the informative voiceover. Now I can't help thinking that there should be more adverts that warn people about the effects of other medical conditions. For example, I'd like to see Ricky Tomlinson who plays Jim Royle doing an advert voiceover that warns of the preventative measures that should be taken if somebody breaks wind. (Something his character in The Royle Family often does). "When flatulence strikes - think my A.R.S.E !" A - Aroma - Has a nasty aroma suddenly invaded your personal space and filled your nostrils ?

R - Reach - Reach for a nearby newspaper or TV guide to waft the smell away and help your lungs breathe in noncontaminated air. S - Space. If you’re in a confined space when flatulence strikes, it may take considerably longer for the smell to disappear than if you’re out in the open. If you are in a bed 'when flatulence strikes', the lock down method should be employed of pulling the duvet down tightly and then using your leg to create a tunnel at the bottom of the duvet in which the flatulent fragrance can escape. Under no circumstances should you attempt to get rid of the smell by wafting the top of the duvet up and down as the results could prove fatal. E - Evacuate the surrounding vicinity if the stench becomes too overpowering So remember, when flatulence strikes think my A.R.S.E ! Now, gerra brew on will your Barb - I'm spitting feathers here.

What better way to celebrate the beginning of their 'special relationship' than with this 24 carat-style shareable necklace pendant. The two halves come together to make a heart shape that signifies the strong and everlasting relationship that the two will now share - no matter how many disagreements they have on the strategy to tackle the worldwide recession, a peace deal in the Middle East and who's turn it is to do the washing up after the G20 summit. Each half of the 'special relationship' heart bears the personalised portraits of the two political statesmen who are now joined together in the same and beautiful way as this heart-warming, heart-shaped pendant.

QUOTE ME EXTREMELY UNHAPPY Back in January, I wrote a light-hearted article about the insurance company Norwich Union who are changing their name to 'Abeaver'... sorry I mean 'Aviva'. Well, now they've got themselves back into my pages thanks to their decision not to pay out for the insurance claim made by the Broadway Theatre following the fire. Apparently they've ruled that because an alarm didn't go off during the arson attack that invalidates the insurance policy… or something along those lines. Thanks to their ridiculous decision, The Broadway Theatre has now had to close. Seventy staff have lost their jobs, the owners are set to lose millions they've invested in the theatre complex and we, Peterborough's public, lose our city's biggest live entertainment venue. Well thanks for nothing you union of carrot crunching, (possibly) claim dodging, name changing, insurance pen pushers. I hope you’re happy with your stupid new name. As I’ve said before 'Aviva' sounds like the name of a haemorrhoid cream, which is rather appropriate seeing as the person who declined The Broadway claim at 'Aviva' seems to be talking out of their a-hole.

JOKESOFTHEMONTH "Why is it when people say 'Have you got a pen?' you know you haven't got a pen - but you still frisk yourself. Sometimes you're on the phone and the person will ask you if you've got a pen to take down their number and you'll immediately go 'Yes' even though you don't have a pen. We all like to play a game called 'Say you have a pen and then try to find a pen before they give you the number'. Sometimes you never find the pen and you pretend to take down the number and you never even get the number because you're too embarrassed to say 'I lied about the pen'.” - Michael McIntyre

"I love British money - you guys have pictures of like inventors and people of significance. Darwin is on the £10 note. That'd never happen in America. A picture of him winking under the banner 'In God We Trust'? No way. You guys shouldn’t go into the Euro though. The Euro is clearly for countries who don't have enough famous people to put on their money - like Belgium. Picture of a kitten eating a waffle’.” – Rich Hall

NO JOKES ON THE HORIZON On U2's new album 'No Line on the Horizon', there's a song called 'Stand Up Comedy'. When I first listened to it I'd hoped it might be Bono doing a five minute routine of his favourite jokes in a Dublin comedy club. Sadly it's not, which I think is a shame because he does bear an uncanny resemblance to American comedian Robin Williams. During U2's ‘Zooropa’ tour, the band emerged from a giant lemon spaceship dressed up as characters from ‘The Village People’. I'm not sure how they plan to start their latest tour, but maybe they could dress up as famous film characters? I think Bono would make a great 'Mrs Doubtfire'.

STANDOUTSTANDUP Comedy continues at The Cresset with award winning comedian Rhod Gilbert on April 4, nominated as ‘Comic of the Year’ by Time Out so worth a look. The Welsh misery performs his critically acclaimed show which saw him nominated for the Best Comedy Show at Edinburgh last year. Then the regular Cresset Comedy Club returns on May 1 with a great line-up featuring Cole Parker, Pippa Evans, Rudi Lickwood, Stuart Black and Electric Forecast. South London comic Cole Parker spins some wry tales and near the knuckle gags while Pippa Evans comes up with some fantastic character comedy which won her this year’s Perrier Award Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Festival. Rudi Lickwood has been named Jongleurs ‘Act of the Year’ for two consecutive years (before becoming a comedian he earned a living as an Eddie Murphy lookalike!) while Stuart Black is a talented newcomer. The night’s compered by double act Electric Forecast - perhaps better known as ‘Big Cook Little Cook’ on CBBC. Jongleurs returns to the South Holland Centre in Spalding on April 2 with MC Rich Wilson introducing Kerry Goldiman, Phil Butler and Rudi Lickwood. In Stamford the Ship of Fools comedy club is also back in action this month with hilarious character comedy from rising star Pippa Evans the talented Kevin Dewsbury and fantastic Irish comic Kevin Hayes all on the bill on Friday April 17.

JUST MINGLING PEP Last month Pep suggested on his page that I should spend less time drinking at ESP events and more time 'mingling' with women. It was all because of a photo he took of Andy Slater and me where he mistakenly thought we were 'staring' at women. Just to put the record straight we weren't 'staring' at women, we were merely 'observing'. I hope that clears that one up…

It’s nearly here; you can almost taste it, not summer or spring but festival season. The time for shenanigans and organized chaos in fields, a life of outdoor living and fresh air and freezing rain… well that’s what it was last year!

Steve Simpson

The Foo Fighters

Over the next few months I hope to be passing on some tips not only for festival survival but festivals to try, because despite popular belief there are more out there than Glastonbury, Reading and V. I will be seeking out some lesser known festies that are close enough to us to make getting there and back less tiresome. With us all credit crunching at the mo smaller more intimate events are quite often good value for your money as well, it’s OK going to somewhere like Glastonbury with 300 acts on but you can only watch one at once and you still pay for the ones you never see! Only a Yorkshire man could come up with that financial wisdom, but it is true in a simple sense. So, where to go and what to see. Well I’ll start off with a favourite of mine, Glastonbudget, nothing to do with the aforementioned corporate giant but a cracking event held in Wymeswold between Melton Mowbray and Leicester. Glastonbudget is mainly a tribute band festival, with new music stages as well. This year you can see Kins of Leon, Razorlike, Four Fighters, One Step Beyond, Mercury, The Kinxs and Oasish to name but a few. This year they also have Oxjam run by Oxfam, basically they’re shipping in loads of

retro stuff and Friday night is 70’s night, Saturday night is 80’s night and Sunday night is Rock night! Yep fancy dress all weekend!! There are loads of stalls to help you pass the day away and they also have a huge real ale bar which also helps you pass away the day… but you don’t remember it! This will be my third year and it’s a great

One Step Beyond

weekend, the site is perfect if not a little exposed when it’s windy, the staff are really friendly and the entertainment brilliant. So you got it, about 3,000 people of all ages having a blast, May 22-24 and it’s under £50 for the weekend, tickets from www.glastonbudget.net

Staying really local now and over at The Plough in Farcet Fen the guys from NABD, a group which help disabled bikers, are putting on their annual fundraiser. Sure it’s a biker do and not your ‘Sunday fine weather biker’ but proper bikers. We went last year and it was great! It was like an all weekend gig with comedy and food to boot. Rick Hulse will be providing the comedy session this year as he did last year and it was hilarious. The Alma Boobies, Stevie one man and his Mandolin, Skeleton Crew and The Mick Rutherford Band are some of the dozen or so bands over the weekend which definitely has a rockin’ feel to it , but with Stevie and his Mandolin…maybe not. There are bikes aplenty, stalls and grub everywhere and although they may look fierce, they’re a real friendly bunch; we had a right old laugh with them last year and will do the same this year. It’s on May 15 -17 and only costs £15 each which includes camping. If you are a biker get your bike down there and your tent, if you’re not a biker just take your tent and join in anyway. They haven’t got room for campers or caravans so brave it out under canvas, or just day visit! See www.dejavousroadshow.tk for info. So there’s a start for you, two great little festivals cheap as chips and a bit different from the corporate nonsense that goes on at larger do’s, and the latter one is completely non profit making so you’ll be doing some good by attending…not a bad thing all round then!

Those eagle eyed readers will have noticed my header has had a real cool makeover. The wicked shades were borrowed from those lovely people at The Oculist in Westgate Arcade, cheers to Gerry and Emma, your range of shades is second to none, you even made me look vaguely pukka! I reckon all the festy goers should have a peek in their place... it’s just what Mr Slater ordered!

They’ll have to perform two songs; one of their best own written songs and a creative cover. QUEST

Fronted by former Busted singer, Charlie Simpson, Fightstar is guaranteed to pull in a young audience when they perform at The Cresset in Peterborough on Friday April 24. The four-man rock/posthardcore band has recently completed a sell-out UK tour and is currently preparing for a summer of festival appearances all over the country. Under 14s are allowed entry to the concert if accompanied by an adult. Tickets to the show, which starts at 7pm, cost £12.50 and are available from the box office on 01733 265705.

ESP Magazine is very pleased to announce that the Voodoo Lounge venue at Mama Liz’s on North Street, Stamford is now open for business as usual, despite having been closed for a couple of weeks in March for specialist soundproofing and acoustic engineering work. As usual, there’s a whole raft of events on at the venue most nights, but of particular note to report in a live music column is the Richard Hall Band, plus Circus hitting the venue on Friday April 3. Then, playing catch-up on the previously postponed gigs, Saturday April 11 sees the return of the Riverside Festival’s Boomerang sessions, featuring James Chadwick plus support. And keeping in tune with their support of the local festival season, Friday April 17 will see the ‘Randall Rootz Presents…’ season kick off with the line-up to be announced via the website.

Originally formed in 1968 and having seen several incarnations to date, the new formation of Dr A’s Blues Consortium is being booked countrywide for festivals and events as prestigious as The Great British Rhythm & Blues Festival and EcoFest, but you can catch them first at The Cherry Tree on Oundle Road, Peterborough on Friday April 17. From Swing to Jazz and Mellow to Down ‘n Dirty, you can definitely expect some great musicianship and a lead vocal reminiscent of Etta James with a little Cher thrown in for good measure. Speaking with Dr A himself, AKA David Astell, I certainly couldn’t contradict his optimism, “In this age of doom and gloom, you need a shot of The Blues to cheer us all up!” www.bluesconsortium.co.uk

For those not yet in the know, local songstress Irene Rae has launched her new website and will be launching her new album at The Glass Onion, Burghley Road, Peterborough on Friday April 3. I haven’t had chance yet but hope to review it in next month’s issue of ESP. In the meantime, check out details on the new website and enjoy Irene’s online blog, updates and reviews. www.irenerae.co.uk

WHITE SPIRIT Combine five excellent musicians, years of collective experience and a passion for classic rock music and you have White Spirit… an explosive cocktail of their own modern rock to the timeless classic rock of Led Zep, Deep Purple to The Cult. Saturday April 18 will see the band playing at The Marquis of Granby in Bourne as a warm-up to The Bourne Festival in June. If you like you’re classic rock, then check ‘em out! www.whitespiritrocks.com

The Contrast in Union Square, NYC. L to R Richard Mackman, Kieran Wade, Thorin Dixon, David Reid – photo by Craig Snyder

NEW ALBUM FOR THE CONTRAST The Contrast are a few weeks into the recording of their sixth original full length album (if you don’t count ‘Perfect Disguise’, which was a compilation album) in Leeds for Little Steven Van Zandt's Wicked Cool Records, with long time producer and collaborator Andy Hawkins on mixing desk duties. It has a working title of ‘Good Luck Charms & Fast Cars’ but there’s no news as yet as to when it’ll be released. Next month, May 22, the band are once again playing at the International Pop Overthrow Festival in Liverpool two shows in one night – at The Cavern Pub and later at The Cavern Club. www.thecontrast.net www.myspace.com/thecontrasttheband

PHANTOMS GOING FOR GOLD As the Peterborough Phantoms ice hockey team head into the final stretch of the 2008/9 season, they’re chasing three trophies to round off what’s been one of the best seasons in Peterborough Ice Hockey history. The Bretton based club should be the English Premier League champions by the time ESP hit the streets, with local rivals the Milton Keynes Lightning finishing as runners-up. The club also made the final of the English Premier League Cup and have also qualified for the end of season Play-Off Cup Tournament. The Quarter Finals take place over the weekend of April 4 and 5, with the home leg taking place on Sunday April 5. The semi-finals and final are held the following weekend April 11 and 12 at the Play-Off finals at the Coventry Skydome. When the Cross Keys Homes sponsored Peterborough Phantoms stepped onto the ice for the English Premier League Cup Final they were sporting a shirt specially commissioned for the event. The shirts are styled on Chicago Blackhawks NHL Winter Classic shirts, but themed in the orange and black that the old Peterborough Pirates used to play in. These new shirts were provided free of charge by the club’s shirt sponsors Keyprint and Powerplay Magazine, who’ve sponsored the club’s shirts for the past three seasons. Powerplay, the British ice hockey magazine and their sister company Keyprint are both based in Peterborough and like to do their bit to help their local team. Good on yer guys! www.peterborough-phantoms.com
