ESP GIRLS ARE WINNERS @ POSH Last month’s Posh Open Day was such a huge success that our Lauren had to park ‘miles away’ and walk to the stadium. She obviously hasn’t exercised her celebrity tantrum yet. Lauren: next time drive right up to the entrance, say: ‘Excuse me but do you know who I am?!’ then toss your keys to the steward so he can park your car. The ESP dancers were a huge hit and stole the limelight from footballers when it came to being photographed the most. Lead dancer Nicole Saunders fancies CMS too – not sure if I’m supposed to announce that but most birds think he’s fit anyway! Apparently Fabio Capello popped in to grab advice from Darren Ferguson on how to manage the captaincy of a football team. Shame Darren isn’t fluent in Italian.

Partygoers met EastEnders and Strictly Come Dancing star, Scott Maslen, at Yates’ recently when the new-look bar celebrated a £300k refurb complete with state-of-the-art lighting, sound system, bar design and a stylish VIP booth. The champagne reception saw plenty of women at the Broadway venue keen for a glimpse of the strapping actor / dancer. Being a keen-ish ‘dancer’ myself, I was devastated at not being able to meet the big man due to holiday commitments. His agent has apologised profusely for not referring to my diary before booking him. Yates’ general manager, Spencer Lloyd, said: “We’re sorry you couldn’t make it Pep, we were looking forward to a Scott and Pep dance-off. But we know you’ll have plenty to commend us for when you see our fantastic new venue. It’s cool and contemporary – right up your street.”
It was good to see former colleagues from my time at the football club and even better to see press officer Phil Adlam working up a sweat on his ground tours. Phil’s nutritious diet of Tango and Juicy Fruits is obviously providing him with sufficient stamina. Sneeze near him and he’ll fall over.

EASTENDERS STAR AT YATES’ RE-LAUNCH
He’s correct. The bar has re-opened with a great line-up of weekly events and value-for-money offers like two main meals for £7.95 – all day, every day – and a bottle of vino for £5.95. There’s also a Monday night curry club (curry and a drink for £4.95) and a ‘Big Grill’ on Tuesdays. The ‘Y Factor’ – for karaoke enthusiasts – launches March 30 and takes place Wednesdays with spot prizes and weekly winners. The grand final is on June 1 with the winner claiming a £200 cash prize. Thursday is student night and Friday is two-for-one on cocktails. Sundays are my favourite – homemade roast and SKY Sports... Mmm, heaven.

2-4-1 COCKTAILS AT BANYAN TREE
NEW BEEMER IS INSTANT HIT More than 100 motorcyclists turned out for the launch party of BMW’s K1600 GT and GTL tourers at Balderston Motorcycles in Hampton and I’m pleased to say I managed to grab a photo of the crew and bike before the beer and wine began to flow (just like Michelle’s pre-helmet hair). My sponsors are lining up a test ride on one of these glorious sixcylinder machines for me to report back on next month – that’s if there’s any left! Balderston have taken orders for this bike, which does everything short of making you an espresso on a Sunday morning. I’ve played with some of its gizmos (loving the variable heated grips and the iPod connection) and still can’t get my head around its engine being almost twice the size as the one in my car. I’m itching to ride it but will patiently wait my turn. In the meantime, there’s a stunning red Ducati 1098 for sale in their used section. Surely sitting in the showroom can’t be doing it any good…I think it could do with a spirited ride to ensure the battery remains charged…
BE A BETTER BIKER FOR JUST £75 Being a more confident and competent rider comes with experience but there’s an opportunity to improve your riding skills with a Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership training day at Cadwell Park Race Circuit for £75. Four workshops take you through road user tips, handling, defensive riding and vehicle maintenance. I’m considering doing it but it’ll be good to share the experience with other motorcyclists – especially novice ones like yours truly. Email pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk if you’re interested. Visit www.roadlincs.com for information.
If you’re partial to one or more cocktails with your meal (or even without a meal) then Thursday is the best night to visit Indian restaurant and bar – the Banyan Tree. The Westgate-located Indian is offering two cocktails for the price of one from 6pm until close. I popped in to ‘sample’ some of their impressive concoctions including the Espresso Martini I’m sipping with owner Dinesh Odedra in this pre-’I’d better leave the car and book a taxi’ photo. The Espresso Martini brilliantly combines Kahlua, a shot of espresso, vodka and Baileys. Another cocktail unique to the Banyan Tree is the Black Samba (Amaretto, Jack Daniels, Bells, vodka) and the very tasty green one Dinesh is drinking. I’d love to tell you what it’s called and what’s in it but by that time I’d lost all ability to write anything legible in my notepad. A range of classic cocktails are also available and they compliment a very tasty and inexpensive all-day tapas menu. Tapas like Jeera niblets and prawn golgappa go down well with a Mojito or a Cosmopolitan let me tell you. Just leave the car at home.
SCRUM DOWN @ RUGBY CLUB BEER FEST It’s always a lively affair at the Peterborough Rugby Club Beer Festival each year and no doubt the 6th annual event at fortress Fengate will be an equally good session.

It’s on from April 29 – May 1 with 50+ (yes really) real ales to guarantee you’re up for a good night. If that doesn’t do it then music from local favourites Retrolux on the Friday, plus support and the Replicas on the Saturday, plus support should have you dancing on the tables… if you can still stand of course!
It’s on from mid-day till midnight, with a disco on the Sunday night – it’s just £4 entry, free for CAMRA members and there’s more details at www.prufc.com or on 01733 569413.
A TASTE OF ITALY IN WHITTLESEY I’ll try to write this next bit without drooling all over the keyboard. If you’re in Whittlesey and fancy a spot of breakfast or lunch then you must pop into Fontanella’s Italian Sandwich Bar on Market Street. This delightful family-run business serves up breakfast from 7am and a variety of classic Italian treats for lunchtime and into the afternoon. Pasta portions are generous and start from £3 while baguettes (hot or cold) are all priced at a respectable £2.80. Best of all you can get tea or coffee for just a quid and a bottle of still water will leave you with 40p change from another one of your pound coins. Pizza portions are cut into Italian-style big squares and again are great value at £1.50. There’s also an outside undercover dining experience (around the back) and a local delivery service available. Don’t get me started on the mouth-watering traditional Italian cakes… Well done Luca and Enzo for keeping it real. See you again soon. www.espmag.co.uk

Quick question about new pop sensation and Brit winner Jessie J – much as I love her catchy pop song Price Tag, if it’s ‘not about the money, money, money’, how come the single wasn’t released as a free download? Just wondering.

HOW I COULD TAKE THE ‘FUN’ OUT OF FUNDRAISING! Huge congratulations to this year’s Comic Relief appeal which raised an amazing £74.3 million on the night, the highest total reached on the night in Red Nose Day’s 23 year history and one of the best night’s telly ever! I spent the whole evening veering between crying with laughter (Catherine Tate as Jason Orange – genius!) and crying my eyes out at the films of the children suffering in Africa. So moved was I in fact that I felt a huge amount of guilt that I hadn’t done more to get involved and began to think of ways in which I could raise a few pounds. Sitting in a bath of baked beans? Not after watching the Alan Partridge sketch. Sponsored run? No, there isn’t a sports bra in the land up to the job of taming these beauties to prevent serious injury. And then, as I coped with upset tummies from both my little boy and my baby girl and contemplated buying shares in Pampers as my misery levels went global, it hit me – a sponsored nappy change! A real feat of endurance and pain if ever there was one. Less ‘do something funny for money’ more ‘do something runny for Mummy’. Worth a fiver of anyone’s money I reckon!

BURGER OFF The chief exec of fast food chain Burger King, Bernardo Hees, has scored a spectacular own goal by reportedly telling a group of students in Chicago that British food is “terrible” and that British women are “not very attractive”. So remind me then, how many Michelin stars has the average Burger King restaurant got then? Oh that’s right, none. And as for the other comment, I’ve seen American Wife Swap. Nuff said.

Step into spring with new brands at Westgate There’s no better way to get ready for spring than by investing in some new items for your wardrobe. Westgate has picked out some great pieces from their new brands in store which will instantly update your look for the new season!
Harriadne’s look
Perry’s look
Chinos make a great change from jeans and can be dressed up with heels or worn with a loose cardi and a pair of ballet pumps for a more casual look.
Guys need to update their wardrobe too with some brighter colours; this bright green G-Star T-shirt certainly does the job!
One of the main trends for spring is bright bold colours and you can’t get much brighter than this blue top. Wear it with a bright skirt to ace the colour blocking trend or tone it down by wearing with nude colours as shown.
A light denim is another way to freshen up for spring, the jeans shown are by Ralph Lauren and have a rough edge to them with fraying detail.
Breton striped tees are everywhere this season again and can go with pretty much everything; we’ve teamed this G-Star striped T-shirt with a khaki A-line, crinkle skirt for a girly look. A-line skirts are another big trend this season, wear with a eye-catching belt to emphasise the waist.
Layering up T-shirts is another way to make your look more interesting even when just wearing T shirts. Perry wears a navy blue Ralph Lauren T-shirt with a white Ralph Lauren Polo tee on top. Opposite colours work well for layering together. Hair: Jayne Austin @ Michael John Make-up: Amber Bird @ Michael John

INTERVIEW: WARWICK DAVIS
For a short guy Peterborough based Warwick Davis tells some tall tales. In fact he’s quite the stand up comic at his guest appearance at Oundle Literature Festival discussing his autobiography Size Matters Not. ESP last caught up with Warwick when he was about to launch his book and now he’s on the verge of filming the pilot of a new comedy series with Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant this June called Life’s Too Short. Johnny Depp’s recently confirmed a guest slot on the show which will see Warwick star as an over the top version of himself, the manager of an agency for short people (which he is in real life) suffering from ‘little man’ syndrome and acting a little too big for his boots. But for now, back to the book. We grabbed a word with Warwick before he addressed an audience of fans in the Great Hall at Oundle. The likeness to Hogwarts isn’t lost on Warwick and he’s soon running an impromptu charm school in character as Professor Flitwick, one of several parts he’s played in the hugely successful Harry Potter series. His work on the films is just one aspect of his autobiography of course which charts his career in acting from the age of 11 years-old in Return Of The Jedi as Wicket the Ewok, through Willow, the Chronicles of Narnia and many more up to the Harry Potter Deathly Hallows finale. But Size Matters Not looks at his life as a small person, 3’6” to be precise, living in a very big world and the challenges he’s faced from school to starting a family. Talking to Warwick it’s clear though that this small person has a very big personality and once addressing the audience he’s an engaging speaker and a commanding presence despite his size.

“It took me such a long time to write and seeing it actually in print on a book shelf is quite weird and it was lovely because for a while it was number one in Peterborough Waterstones,” he tells me with a proud smile, “I went in and took a picture of that actually!” he laughs. “What’s really nice is that I keep getting messages from people who say it’s been inspiring or they’ve
20
www.espmag.co.uk
had a lot of laughter from it. Even people I’ve worked with in the past who I had no idea would be buying it have been reading it.” The paperback version is coming out later this year but of course it’s news of the TV show with Ricky Gervais that’s dominating current headlines. “It’s very exciting,” Warwick tells me. He took the idea to Ricky originally and he’s clearly delighted it’s taken off. “Every day something else surprises me about the show, I knew for a while but it’s just been announced about Johnny Depp making a cameo and there will be others as well.” The show airs in autumn on BBC2 and HBO in America, with seven episodes. “You can expect the kind of quality comedy the BBC produces from such brilliant writer / directors as Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant... and brilliant actors such as myself,” he jokes. “I’ve seen the first couple of episodes and it’s just really exciting. It’s going to be hard work for me I know that. As it gets closer I feel more daunted by the whole thing because now so many people are anticipating what’s becoming of this show it’s getting such a lot of interest. Ricky blogged that he received some boxing gloves from Mike Tyson and he’d written on them ‘can I be in your new show’ so I’m not sure if I need to get to the gym and start warming up!” After his appearance in Extras, Warwick’s links with Ricky continued with his appearance on the Ricky Gervais Show with an animated version of him making an appearance around episode seven. “It’s from a podcast recorded years ago,” explains Warwick, “I asked Karl (Pilkington) a few questions and he got my name wrong and called me Warren several times. So I’ve been immortalised in the Ricky Gervais Show now which is terriffic.” Since Deathly Hallows finished filming Warwick’s also been in Radio 4 play The Climb, and is also set to appear with his wife and two children in Jack The Giant Killer so there are plenty more adventures to come... probably enough for a second book. But during his talk he reveals he’s desperate to be in Doctor Who and has already created a plot where, when the Doctor regenerates something goes wrong and he comes back as Warwick and the Tardis is really small... just for a couple of episodes mind and then the Doctor goes back to normal. Producers if you’re reading – he’s up for it! Sharon McAllister

Stamford CALLING
matt.zilch@espmag.co.uk
Matty Speaks... It’s always great to welcome a new venue in town so I’m looking forward to the opening of the new champagne bar called Opus Dai on Broad Street. Two guys well known on the local nightlife scene are behind the project – Darren Dickings who clubbers at Quo Vadis (as it was) in Peterborough may remember, and Dave Ball. They’re promising a mix of fine food, wine and champagne to bring what they describe as a ‘unique eating and drinking experience’ to the town. From coffee and a light lunch through to an evening meal these guys say they’ve got it covered and will even have live music on the patio over the summer. We’ve had a sneaky peak and it’s looking good. You’ll find it near to the Lord Burghley and the official opening is on April 16 – see you down there!
GREAT NEW FEAST-IVAL PLANNED Foodies in the town should be looking forward to the Stamford Feast next month on the Meadows. Ali Hawley-Smith, from the Stamford Town Partnership has been in touch and I’m pleased to hear the town council have got behind the idea. It’s taking place on Sunday May 29 and if you like your grub this is the event to head to! Ali and the team are also behind the Stamford Christmas Festival so you know they’ll put on a good event and that’s also been approved and given funding so it’ll be back this December for the third time. The Stamford Feast will see various marquees packed with tasty temptations from local food producers alongside those from across the world, with plenty of wine tasting as well as music from world musicians and performers. Sounds good!
SUPPORT Stamford Ladies AFC Fundraising evening Volunteers are holding a charity fundraising evening to raise money for LIVES – First Responders and Stamford Ladies AFC. The event will be held on April 2 at the Stamford Daniels Ground and will include live entertainment from local band Twenty4 plus a disco and hot food’s available. There’ll also be a raffle and all proceeds/donations will be split between LIVES and Stamford Ladies AFC. Tickets are £10 for a family ticket (two adults two children) adult tickets are £5 and children’s are £2.50.
It’s great to see that these festivals are getting support from the council and I hope that the weather is at its best for this cracking sounding event. Now all we need to get sorted is the Riverside Festival… fingers crossed eh?

Lauren gets celebrity brows at bodycare It’s the hot look all the celebrities are sporting and our very own celebrity Lauren Hughes, our Face of ESP, was given the much sought-after HD (High Definition) Brows treatment at Bodycare in Stamford.
Before
Laura Try has been specially trained to offer this great seven step, high-precision procedure. Firstly Lauren’s eyebrows were tinted to make them stand out and then waxed to create the perfect shape. The brows were then threaded, trimmed and any remaining hairs were plucked. Laura then filled in the brow area with pencil to give the ultimate definition and brows which perfectly framed Lauren’s face.
This technique is long lasting making it great value and transforms even the most over-plucked brows. All we can say is WOW! Lauren was delighted with the results – “The treatment was fantastic. I hated growing my eyebrows but the transformation has been well worth the wait. I felt so relaxed in the salon and would definitely recommend the HD Brow Treatment!” Call Laura at Bodycare on Ironmonger Street for details on 01780 480777.

DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE
Dr Christian Jessen has become a household name informing the nation of the gruesome wonders of the human body in Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies and Supersize Vs Superskinny.
He took time out from filming to spend a day at the launch of the first official Peterborough Science Festival staged at Peterborough Regional College, University Centre Peterborough and Thomas Deacon Academy. ESP asked student Ella Szklaruk, with additional reporting by Amy Rutter and Abigail Ferrell, to report back…
“I was working in a clinic that was quite mediasavvy and they used to be quite nice to the BBC. So I ended up doing that and it was really being in the right place at the right time. I got whisked off to some news programme and it went on from there. “Our viewing figures for this series have been phenomenal – about 4.5million, which is more patients than I could hope to treat in my lifetime! It’s brilliant that we can give out health messages to that many people in the one hour timeslot.”
The doctor sat nervously in the University Centre Peterborough lecture hall, awaiting the interrogation from the dozens of Peterborough Regional College journalism, media and science students facing him.
The award-winning, Embarrassing Bodies, has been entertaining the nation since 2007 when it first aired as Embarrassing Illnesses. Dr Christian has seen his fair share of unsightly ailments and illnesses during the show. Asked if there are any body parts that do make him squeamish, Dr Christian revealed –“I do not like feet in any way, shape or form. I can deal with willies and bums and anything else, but I just don’t like feet. I let the production company know that quite early on when filming the first series... so from then on, every feet case got put my way as they wanted to see a bit of reaction. It’s usually the most encrusted, athlete’s foot-ridden, male feet that haven’t seen the light of day for about 16 years that make me cringe.”
He was the special guest of honour at Peterborough Science Festival – a week-long event which included lectures and workshops designed to make science sexy. Dr Christian’s first question was one he must have fielded a dozen times before, ‘When did you first know that you wanted to become a doctor?’ His answer was far from standard. “‘I was never really interested in medicine. I wanted to be a director in a theatre.” With a family obsessed with science and a physicist for a father, Dr Christian eventually moved into medicine.
Asked if there had ever been a time when he got it wrong, Dr Christian replied: “Yes. When filming the last series, a guy came in with warts on his hands and I said, ‘I am the Wart King, no wart has ever defeated me yet! I’m going to get these warts and freeze them off!’ and I completely and utterly failed. In the end, we had to send him to the surgeon and have them chopped off... you didn’t see all of that though.”
“My passion was biology. I didn’t have a bloody clue what medicine was going to involve. I only really started to enjoy [medicine] and understand what it was all about when I started training and was let out on to the wards. I specialised in infectious disease and then I went into sexual health and HIV as my final specialty. [Media companies] always like specialists to go on to the news to talk about teenage pregnancies or rising Chlamydia rates, or whatever the current news story is.

As many doctors and healthcare professionals alike see many traumatic situations on a daily basis, Dr Christian explained how he likes to wind down after a day’s work. “I drink heavily! Vodka, whiskey, Special Brew,” he joked. “I think that I’m now quite good at switching off, but there are things that still really do irritate me and they stay with you. As a junior doctor I’d lay in bed at night with images in my head of my patients – the ones that had died or those who were very ill... they wouldn’t go out of my head when I shut my eyes. It was very difficult but I think you just develop techniques... I’m a bit of a gym freak and I exercise a lot. If I’m in a bad mood I go to the gym and I can usually get rid of my aggression rather than breaking things at home. I think a reason why a lot of doctors drink and smoke and get hooked on their painkillers is because they don’t create coping mechanisms.’ So what’s next for the doctor? “Possibly it all falls apart and I go back to being a normal doctor again! I’d love to do a meaty, interesting programme on HIV and what the hell HIV is. For me, it’s one of the most fascinating diseases on the planet. “I’ve seen less people die from HIV now because treatment is very, very good. Nowadays, I can tell my newly-diagnosed patients that they can have a normal life expectancy if they listen to their doctor, take all of their pills and lead a healthy lifestyle.”

LUKE HEADS FOR THE STARS We’ve long championed local actor Luke Pasqualino at ESP as one of the young guns putting Peterborough on the map, but as a fan of Battlestar Galactica I was particularly excited when I heard about his latest role... Oh yes, our Luke is stepping into the mighty shoes of one Admiral William Adama! As fans of the sci-fi show Battlestar Galactica will know he’s the gritty, brooding leader who took on the Cylons against all odds and was determined to find the final remnants of the human race a new home. For those who didn’t watch it, just know that this is a major breakthrough for our home-grown talent and no more will Luke be known as Freddie from Skins! So how does a young and good looking new actor like Luke become he of the craggy face, grumpy demeanour and bad complexion? Well, he’s starring in the prequel to Battlestar: Blood and Chrome – taking us back to when a 20 year-old, ambitious Adama first joined the star fleet. I grabbed a word with Luke the day before he flew out to Canada to begin filming the two hour pilot and where, incidentally, he would be celebrating his 21st birthday! Not a bad present methinks... however it turned out he’d been spoilt for choice. “I’d literally just accepted a role in a British film and was really pleased, when my agent rang and confirmed I’d also been offered this role in Battlestar so I had to refuse the film at the last minute and get ready to fly out. I’ve really not had time to think it’s come round so quickly. I’m very nervous as I’m the lead which is added pressure.” Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome is set during the first Cylon war and sits between the Caprica prequel and Battlestar Galactica, the series which revived the 70s show in fine modern style and had legions of fans gripped as humans were virtually annihilated by the machines they’d created. This is all news to Luke though, he confesses he wasn’t that familiar with the series. “I’ve been researching the character as I hadn’t seen the show – he’s got a lot of attitude and swagger – definitely not a push over!” Indeed – and the character played by Edward James Olmos will take some getting his teeth into. Luke’s young looks may mean he’ll have to face a bit of a battle winning over some fans as for some he’s a surprising choice. The pressure is on but we’ve no doubt he’ll conquer a new army of fans keen to see the origins of their hero. This former Walton school drama student knows what he’s up against but is confident he’ll give Bill Adama a new lease of life – “I’ve got complete faith in my agent in the US. I was really excited when I did the screen test, now I’ve got it I can really work on making it mine and put my own stamp on it.” He’s also excited about the prospect of moving on from his persona as Freddie Mclair in Skins who broke numerous hearts when he suffered a grisly demise at the end of series four. The actors all got on well and Luke says there’s still a strong camaraderie. “I’m still in touch with the Skins cast, we facebook and text but everyone’s so busy. I haven’t watched the new series but I wish them all luck. I had a great time doing it but I don’t just want to be known as Freddie from Skins forever.” After Skins Luke appeared in Casualty and Miranda Hart, before taking a small film role in the forthcoming movie Apparition and a new series of the Borgias with Jeremy Irons of which he says –“It’s been good, I’ve enjoyed every minute and I’m still learning.” Luke has his heart set on a career in Hollywood films now and this role is his most important stepping stone yet. Exciting times, but also pretty daunting you might think? “I do get very nervous when I go to the screen tests but other than that I don’t really find it daunting – the thought of not working is more daunting I suppose. “Every project you work on and whoever you’re with you get to learn something new. Putting a smile on the director’s face, knowing you did well or getting a pat on the back form other actors is really rewarding. I just love doing it. “When the possibility arose that I might be able to make a career and earn a living out of something I’m so passionate about, I just really wanted to go for it.” Let’s hope that after this Luke’s battling a flood of other offers and his leap into the big time takes off. paparazzi Caught in the act? COMIC RELIEF @ COCA C LA Well done to everyone who did their bit for Comic Relief this year and to staff and volunteers at Coca Cola in Peterborough in particular. The call centre was once again taking pledges during the live TV broadcast and had dozens of extra helpers donning the headsets including Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue, Peterborough Police, the Saxons American Football team, the Phantoms and Deepings Rugby Club to name a few. Our own Face of ESP Lauren Hughes dropped by with Emma Bothamley behind the lens capturing all the fun and games. The company always gets right behind Red Nose Day and staff had spent the day fundraising reaching a grand total of £2299.96! Their fun theme was Hollywood and as you can see many of them had really gone to town on their outfits in particular Emma Hearn pictured here, who’d painted herself as Avatar. Our Lauren of course was looking glam as Marilyn Monroe so our thanks to Harlequin in St David’s Square, Fengate (Tel: 01733 896 758) for making her look such a star on the red carpet! They took 3,000 calls on the night and £130k in confirmed donations over the phone making this the best one ever!

ESP
CELEBS
Just 15 years-old and with a second album on the way – Yeah Right. ESP’s Susan Saunders finds out more about teenage star Dionne Bromfield… At 13 years-old, whilst I liked to think I was all grown up, I was still very much a child. Running round the ‘metaphorical field’ playing kiss-chase was therefore high on the agenda (nothing new there then!) but for other 13 year-olds, things couldn’t have been more different. Take, for instance, up and coming star, Dionne Bromfield. Having released her first single aged 13, the future was looking bright for Dionne. Now aged 15, if being described as ‘Dame Shirley Bassey’s successor’ by the Sun and appearing on the last series of Strictly Come Dancing with Amy Winehouse singing backing vocals wasn’t enough, Dionne, is about to release her second single – Yeah Right. Now, this is somewhat of a big deal if you ask me, but when asked if Dionne was overwhelmed by it, she replied – “I don’t feel any pressure”! I’m not sure many others in the same situation would share the same sentiment. “I just do what I do – I love this record so much. This is my baby.” The self penned track, featuring the son of hip hop genius Run DMC, Diggy, can only be summed up as a mixture of soul meets hip hop with a playful vibe. Most girls have once thought of reaching singing superstardom without their dreams ever being realised. Thankfully, Dionne was introduced to the world’s music stage by her famous godmother and fellow soul singer, Amy Winehouse, who signed Dionne up to her record label, Lioness Records. She hasn’t looked back since.

It wasn’t such plane-sailing at the beginning though – “Everyone told me I could sing from about the age of ten, my mum was always telling me, but I was so shy I didn’t believe them. The more that people told me, the more I went into the background and the less likely I was to sing. “I was at home once when Amy was round and heard me and she said ‘girl, it’s true, you can’. And that started something off in me. I started getting just that bit more confident.” The new-found confidence didn’t get out of control, nor could it be mistaken for arrogance, as Dionne didn’t even tell any of her school friends that she was recording her first album. “I thought they’d think I was up myself if I told them,” she explains, so she kept quiet. Most of the school didn’t even know she could sing until they saw her on the This Morning sofa! Dionne seems polite and humble, which aren’t words often used to describe a music star. You’d ordinarily perhaps think such a young star would be diva-esque with a bad attitude but not this young lady who claims – “I don’t even really rate my voice.” It’s lucky that others, myself included, do then isn’t it?! If you hadn’t heard of Dionne Bromfield before today (where have you been?!) or her previous material, let this be your enlightening. Trust me when I say, you have been missing out, as this girl can really sing. Her voice is so big and soulful for someone so young and in fact, for anyone really.
“I don’t even really rate my voice” Dionne knows her own mind too, unlike some other sycophants, who may be so grateful for a record deal that they become blinded, forgetting what they actually like. This was tested when the head of her record label suggested the second album should be a set of cover songs to establish Dionne before letting her cut loose with her own song writing. “After my song writing sessions had gone so well, it felt like the wrong thing to do” – so that’s what she told him! There’s much more in store for this young lady, who has all the ingredients for super stardom, so we wish her well. Keep your eye out for Dionne’s second album this year but in the meantime, Yeah Right is available to buy or download from April 25. Susan Saunders

PRINCE CHARMING'S WEDDING DISCO
SIMON EVANS Simon Evans will keep the laughs coming at the Cresest with his Fringe Magnet show on April 9. A master of observational comedy, Simon’s sharp tongue and dry, ironic wit will be on show in this, his debut solo tour. Tickets cost £12. Box office: 01733 265705.
MIKE GUNN + SEAN COLLINS
The part of the wedding I'm most looking forward to is the Royal reception, or at least I was until I found out that the TV cameras aren't allowed to broadcast live coverage! OK, so the actual wedding ceremony from Westminster Abbey is the main event but why can't we see the reception from Buckingham Palace? It's a bit like sitting down to watch the FA Cup final and then finding out they're not going to show the second half.
The Still On The Road Show on April 22 features two outstanding stand-up comedians in a unique show that offers the best of all worlds – solo sets from Mike Gunn and Sean Collins, and a new double set that sees both on stage together. A headline act on the comedy circuit for a decade, Mike teams his killer punchlines with Canadian Sean’s storytelling style comedy into a show not to be missed. Tickets cost £12. Box office: 01733 265705.
CRESSET COMEDY CLUB April’s Cresset Comedy Club is another great line-up, sure to be a hit thanks to the brilliant gags of Jongleurs regular, headliner Phil Butler. Supported by the manic Robert White and Leicester Comedy Festival Act of the Year Matt Rudge, doors to the show on April 29 open at 7pm and tickets cost from £10. Box office: 01733 265705.
Hearing Wills and Kate say 'I do' is just part of the day, and I’m sure I'm not the only one who wants to hear Prince Harry's best man speech in the marquee after he's had a few beers.
As both Wills and Kate were born in 1982 I'd like to see them pick a song from that year. A quick look at the UK number ones from 1982 offers up some great first dance songs. Tight Fit's The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Shakin’ Steven's Oh Julie, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder's Ebony and Ivory, The House Of Fun, Come On Eileen, Eye Of The Tiger, Pass The Dutchie, Do You Really Want To Hurt Me, I Don't Wanna Dance, A Town Called Malice and that year’s Christmas number one, Renee & Renato's Save Your Love. Every one a party classic!

MILTON JONES The Cresset’s reputation for great comedy is sure to get another boost on April 8 with Milton Jones Lion Whisperer. Billed as the best one-liner merchant in British comedy, the award-winning funnyman is a regular on radio and TV including Mock The Week and Michael Mcintyre’s Comedy Roadshow. Tickets are £15. Box office: 01733 265705.
So it's finally here, the most eagerly anticipated televised wedding since Nessa decided to marry Dave Coaches in Gavin & Stacey… On April 29 his Royal Highness Prince William, our future King marries Katie Price, sorry I mean Kate Middleton.
Plus, I'm intrigued about the wedding disco. What's the first dance song going to be? Pur-lease don't tell me it's going to be You're Beautiful by James Blunt. I remember going to one of my mates weddings and all the guests gathered round in anticipation as he and his wife took to the dance floor and as soon as the DJ started playing Blunt's trilling voice it was drowned out by around 50 people sighing 'Oh for f*** sake'.
COMEDY GIGS
RUSSELL KANE Or how about the two songs that were number one on the days they were both born? Wills was born on June 21 to the sound of Adam Ant's Goody Two Shoes (which is pretty much the story of his life), whilst Kate was born when the Human League were top of the charts with Don't You Want Me Baby. Yeah, I know what you're thinking and you're right – you couldn't hope for a more inappropriate wedding song, but sometimes folks, the jokes just write themselves... Anyway, seeing as none of us are invited to the Royal Wedding reception – if any of you wanna party the night away, might I suggest you head down to Flares on Friday April 29. ESP's roving reporter and resident Flares DJ, Mikey Clarke assures me he'll be playing all your wedding party classics and will be giving the night a Royal theme... So expect plenty of Queen songs.
This is an early tip off but as tickets are selling fast you’d better get in quick. Russell Kane brings his Manscaping tour to the South Holland Centre in Spalding on October 8. Join the Fosters Comedy Award winner and star of loads of stuff on telly as he mercilessly explores the ridiculous state of masculinity in the modern world. He shaves his chest fur – you watch and laugh! Tickets are £17.50. Box office: 01775 764777.
VOODOO STANDS UP Live comedy at Mama Liz’s in Stamford continues with Yorkshire funnyman Tom Wrigglesworth fresh from his popular Radio 4 show series –Tom Wrigglesworth’s open letters – on April 28. He was also voted best comedy show 2010 by Chortle. An articulate and natural raconteur, he possesses an innate ability to riff with an audience like they’re old friends. Support from three other comedians. Tickets £5 in advance from www.mamaliz.co.uk

English ESP’s nutrition expert continues her trip around the world looking for the best in every country’s diet – this month, how to enjoy the best English dishes. The month of April has turned to all things English as we have a double celebration of our very own St George’s Day and of course our Royal Wedding. Ask most English people their favourite food and many will probably say burgers, Chinese or curry! American, Chinese or Indian food might well suit many taste buds but we know these are not our traditional ‘English’ foods. So let’s look again at what may be our typical English foods that many of us would have been fed on. Of course we can’t say many of them are ‘healthy foods’ as they tend to scream out weight gain, diabetes and cardiovascular disease if we ate this way each day, but as you can see we can change it slightly to make it a little more healthy… Sunday roast – load up with more veg and less starchy potatoes. Pies and chips – pastry is a high saturated fat food, ideally should only be eaten occasionally but you can reduce the load by only having a pie crust and making it with good grade vegetable oil. Home made chips are the best, you can cut them and drizzle them in oil and bake instead of deep frying. Bangers and mash – good quality bangers that are from quality meat (less cereals and fillers) and leaving the skins on the potato can make a healthy improvement to this dish or mash up with half a carrot to reduce some of the potato (serve with seasonal veg to make it even better). Fish and chips – batter was originally used to cook the fish under high temperatures, so you could try peeling the batter off or even asking your local chippy to do some steamed fish. But of course you can enjoy a good old fish supper occasionally. The fish brings some good quality protein and essential fats good for brain health. English breakfasts – grilling should replace any frying here, try to use the best quality meats, add in a few grilled tomatoes, low salt beans and this can be an improvement on the high fat and high salt versions.
Apples – Full of natural fibre, vitamin C, potassium and rich in phytochemicals which may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular and other diseases. Many of the nutrients are found just under the skin so eating the whole apple is best. Spring greens – packed full of vitamin A, K, C, calcium and more. Also a good source of fibre. Rhubarb – although it’s botanically a vegetable many of us probably remember eating rhubarb in our pies or crumbles or with a bag of sugar (not ideal), rich in vitamin C, potassium, lutein and zeaxanthin (both helpful for eye and vascular health) – never eat the leaves and take caution for anyone with kidney stones. Other good English veg are sorrel, Jersey Royals and cabbage to name a few. Karen For more information go to my new site www.karendevine.co.uk and www.devinedetox.co.uk
SWAPS
Afternoon tea (sandwiches, cakes, scones washed down with a good old cuppa) – whilst many of us would not sit and have high tea today we do still benefit from a healthy snack around 3-4pm to keep our energy from slumping which will keep you going until dinner. Boiled egg/soldiers – the humble egg is a perfect food and one that I remember having a lot of as a kid. My personal favourite is ‘mashed up egg in a cup’ basically this was two boiled eggs mashed up with a little butter but had to be in a cup... weird I know! The egg is rich in amino acids which build proteins, vitamins B, K , D and E and more. Swapping any white bread for wholegrain or a good quality gluten-free bread for those out there that are sensitive to gluten to enjoy a ‘dippy egg’. Now to our really healthy English fruits and vegetables which include: Strawberries – packed full of vitamin C, folic acid and biotin to name a few, and rich in fibre and flavanoids which can help protect us from disease.
Karen is a qualified Nutritionist, member of Bant and is currently completing her registration process.

REVIEW
CHIQUITO
Phorpres Way, Cygnet Park, Peterborough. Tel: 01733 898 540 When asked to review the food at Chiquito (located on Phorpres Way, Hampton) this gave me the perfect excuse to finally drag my partner to a venue that serves spicy food – which she isn’t a fan of. I might have been able to drag her to Peterborough’s new hot-spot sooner if I’d known about their ‘Hot or Not’ fire detector. This guided us on each of the dishes spiciness so we had a better idea on the hot stuff available, and more importantly for the missus… what was milder! The wooden décor and complimentary portion of nacho chips were very much appreciated, and gave a Mexican feel straight away. Seeing most of the tables around me filled with classic sizzling fajitas, I decided to try something a little less clichéd and ordered the chimichangas with a beef chilli filling (£10.95). These are deep fried pastry parcels filled with beef chilli, cheese, beans, and rice with guacamole, sour cream, and salsa dips. This isn’t the most appetising looking dish which may have put me off if I wasn’t so pleasantly surprised by the flavourful taste. I also loved the contrast of the crisp outside and soft (delicious) inside. This is by far not one of their spicier dishes… but of course I knew that from their ‘Hot or Not’ fire detector. My partner played it safe when ordering the classic burger with cheese and bacon (£9.49), but rates it as one of the juiciest in Peterborough. For anybody feeling more adventurous than her, there’s the Pollo del Fuego, which was created to make you sweat. It’s juicy chicken marinated in a red hot chilli sauce – I wasn’t quite feeling brave enough for this! It’s perhaps worth mentioning to families that their kids menu also offers a wide range of meals, and at just £4.99. So whether it’s for the classic Mexican environment, the cocktails or the wide range of starters, mains and desserts (spicy or mild), Chiquito is the place to go for a Mexcellent night out! Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
ORANGERY OPENS WITH A NEW LOOK The Orangery at Burghley House in Stamford has opened its doors for the spring season, and has a great new interior refurbishment to flaunt! They’ve added a contemporary twist to its current traditional feel, with Vincent Shepherd Lloyd Loom chairs and Sophie Conran china. They’ve also introduced renowned events and catering company, Absolute Taste, which will be supplying all the delicious food and drink at Burghley House, and is hoping to continue its previous success with it. You can enjoy a morning coffee with homemade cakes, sandwiches or a traditional roast dinner, delicious salads, snacks and scones… the list goes on! It’s great to have such a grand house just around the corner, with stunning gardens, sculpture walk and a relaxing restaurant to make a pit stop at. It’s open from 10am – 5pm, Saturday – Thursday, every week. (Closed on Fridays). www.burghley.co.uk.

ASSIETTE 8-9 St Paul’s St, Stamford. Tel: 01780 489071 We popped into new restaurant Assiette (formerly Finnan’s) in Stamford for a girlie celebration. The chef and patron Dameon Clark has an impressive pedigree having worked under well known names such as Gary Rhodes and Michel Roux Jr. as well as gaining two AA rosettes when he was Head Chef at Nick's Restaurant in Oakham and retaining two AA rosettes when he moved to The Collyweston Slater. The food certainly didn’t disappoint. We enjoyed a mixture of dishes from the set menu – great value at £15.50 for two courses and £20.50 for three – including a delicious terrine, chicken, seared tuna and the most amazing hand battered fish and chunky chips. Of course this menu varies but from what we’ve heard, other recent diners have also found the food delicious. On Saturday nights it’s purely a la carte and the staff tell us these nights are now getting booked up well ahead which must be a sign of success! During our visit we did feel a little more was needed by way of décor but at that point it was early days. We all agreed the food was excellent and beautifully presented – every plate was a work of art – and the service was discreet but attentive. It’s certainly a new restaurant on the scene which we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. www.assietterestaurant.co.uk

FILM ROLE FOR LOCAL GUY LEWIS Susan Saunders catches up with Lewis Saunderson, a local actor about to star in new film, Bully… Lewis Saunderson is unlike most Peterborough-based 27 yearolds – yes, he’s been to school, college and the like but he’s also appeared in a number of films and has a new one, Bully, coming out in the summer too. Many years ago both Lewis and I performed in a Peterborough Regional College (PRC) production of The King and I at the Key Theatre – me, as Tuptim and Lewis as the King – so time for a catch up! It was in a drama lesson at Ken Stimpson School where Lewis found his passion for drama. Before then, he was – “sometimes a bit distracted” at school, classic behaviour of a naturally creative and practical person. The students had been split into groups to devise some scenes that they’d later perform to the class. Whilst rehearsing, Lewis’ group got “really lost in themselves and the acting as the emotions heightened” and it wasn’t long before the rest of the class had stopped in their tracks and were watching the performance. It’s no surprise then that Lewis got an A* in Expressive Arts, which set him on his way to study AS Drama at school and National BTEC in Drama at PRC. After college, Lewis took a year out to get more experience and direction from the Key Theatre’s creative director Michael Cross (Mike), before heading to East 15 drama school. Mike saw great promise in Lewis and in that year, toured with Key Ties Production Company in various Theatre in Education performances, and performed in Much Ado Ron Ron, Jesus Christ Superstar and Sweet Charity.
the role of Jimmy, will act alongside Gabriel Thomas (from BBC’s My Family) and there’s rumour of a big Hollywood star being cast too.
“I’m so grateful to Mike, I owe a lot to him. Because of him, I was later able to join East 15 as a professional actor, which meant I had a discipline that not all of the other students had. When I joined, it was literally do or die – I had nothing else to fall back on – drama was and is my life.
“Filming starts in April/May – I’m looking forward to working with some great actors. Words can’t describe how excited I am!
“At first, I thought I’d just do drama school for a year and then I’d be off to Hollywood but in the end, I took my time to learn and I got the foundation that I needed.” Lewis’ patience paid off because after working on loads of theatre and film productions, he’s set to star in the film Bully, due for release this summer. Bully, a Groundwork Films Production, explores the destructive relationships between peers and the family with a twist. Not your average British film, it takes you on a journey of realisation through the eyes of three guys, with the obstacles of phobias and family tragedy, on the search for love. Lewis, who will play
“Jimmy is the main guy’s (Alex) cousin and is quite a dark character, someone not to be messed with. It’s always good to play these roles because they do really stretch you.
“When filming has finished, I’m going to take a long overdue holiday”. When asked about love (as I often tend to ask people) Lewis, currently single, confessed – “I haven’t had a girlfriend since leaving drama school but it’s a time thing more than anything. I never say never, I want love and to settle down with a wife and stuff – I’m one of seven children, so that will always be on the agenda but I don’t have time at the moment. It sounds like a cliché but [when I am looking] someone has to make me laugh.” To keep up to date with Lewis, you can follow him on Twitter @methodman26 and for more information about Bully, visit www.bullymovie.co.uk

WINDSOFCHANGE This 100 per cent electric car has blown away the judges and won European Car of the Year 2011 – welcome to your motoring future, the Nissan LEAF.
it recharges every time you brake, as well as that warm and fuzzy feeling that you’re doing a significant bit for the environment. Even many of the materials used to build the LEAF are recycled or are recyclable! Stylish and contemporary good looks is another one of the factors that has won this car acclaim but the fact it has as many mod cons and gadgets as some of the most popular petrol guzzlers has also ticked many boxes among the car buying public – indeed someone was signing on the dotted line at Peterborough Nissan in Bretton as Sadie reluctantly handed over her keys. Now we know what you’re thinking – ‘but surely I can’t go far before I run out of power?’ Not so. The LEAF has a range of 110miles and every Nissan electric vehicle dealership will be equipped with a rapid charger where you can power up to 80 per cent capacity in 30 minutes. Plus you can even charge it up overnight at home. As a mum of two Sadie felt this was an ideal family car – “It’s roomy and comfortable with lots of boot space, plus the sat nav is excellent for getting you to the right place even if the kids are distracting you. There’s also a really handy reversing camera so no stretching and trying to peer over the kids heads while trying to get in a tricky space. I really did love it!”
We sent our girl Sadie out on a mission to put the new Nissan LEAF to the test only to have her return with a huge grin on her face stating – “I want one!” Sadie’s never driven an automatic before but says she took to it immediately – “It’s incredibly easy to drive, just press the ‘on’ button and off you go. “For some reason I expected it to be a hard drive and sluggish but I

couldn’t have been more wrong. This was the total opposite. The steering is light, it’s responsive and very nippy!”

FIRE AND ICE Does it get much better than fire fighters and ice hockey players?! Well if you fancy seeing the UK Fire Fighters ice hockey team take on the Peterborough Islanders in a special fundraiser this month, get your coat on and get down to Planet Ice in Bretton on April 23. It’ll be all action as the UK Fire Fighters do battle in preparation for their forthcoming trip to New York no less, where they’ll be competing in the World Police And Fire Games. The charity match is to help them to go to the games at the end of August, which also commemorates the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, as well as raising money for their chosen charities, Help For Heroes and The Fire Fighters Charity.

Phil Gould, a fire fighter who’s been in service for the last 14 years, and who’s based at Dogsthorpe fire station, is also a bit of a daredevil and when sky diving and leaping out of planes as a hobby became a bit well… dull… he turned his hand to ice hockey and has found himself on the UK team. Phil knows they face a tough challenge in New York – “They have high standards over there as people often play ice hockey at school so they’re very good. I imagine the ice rinks over there will be something else! “We’re going for the experience not medals and we’re all really looking forward to it. “The Islanders are more our level so we have a chance of beating them so we’ll be going for it at the charity match – it should be a good night!” There’ll be plenty of fun and games at the charity match as well as plenty of fire fighters! Face off will be at 5.30pm and tickets are a fiver for adults, £3 for under 14s and under 5s get in free. Under 12s are being encouraged to design a poster on fire safety and take it with them and they could win a trip to the fire station.

a possible upset in their two-legged play off quarter final tie with Slough Jets who finished third in the league and who recently won the EPL Cup. When Phantoms took on the league champions elect, Manchester Phoenix, (who needed one point to secure the title and brought hundreds of fans down ready to celebrate) the Peterborough side ripped up the script and the formbook to thrash the Phoenix 6-2 with Canadian forward Jeff Glowa bagging a hat-trick.

The home leg of the play off quarter final is on Saturday April 2, face-off 7pm and it’s certain to be a very special night. Not
only is it likely to be one of the most exciting games of the season but the fans are also holding a big beach party in the rink with the loudest of outfits sure to be in abundance. Two seasons ago, dozens of Phantoms fans travelled down to the Isle of Wight to hold a similar party prior to a league fixture on the Island and then went on to see their side win the play-off trophy a few weeks later... so the lucky omen is there! POSH BOYS AND ESP GIRLS SCORE WITH THE FANS! The fans came out in force for the Posh open day and ESP joined in the fun. We sent Susan Saunders to discuss the off-side rule… On hearing Peterborough United’s (Posh) open day was expecting thousands of faithful supporters; I popped down to London Road to get the gossip on the day. In addition to the crowds of players and Posh supporters being treated to a performance by the ESP Dance Crew, there was fun for all the family with a penalty shoot-out and the EA Hub, showcasing the latest games. After an open training session on the pitch, which Lauren Hughes, our Face of ESP took part in, the entire Posh squad headed to the packed Caroline Hand Executive Suite for three hours of signing autographs, posing for pictures and chatting to supporters eager to meet their heroes. I caught up with Lauren after her run around, who was very excited to be part of the day – “I was happy to be involved. At first I thought I was going to forget my football skills (Lauren used to play for Yaxley Ladies FC) but luckily I hadn’t. I scored four goals against goalies Joe Lewis and Paul Jones, so I like to think I gave the guys a run for their money!” The crowds were a bit overwhelming at times to say the least! Whilst I was wrestling the sea of fans in one area of the ground, Manager Darren Ferguson was answering questions at a Forever Posh fans forum which I hear was also bursting at the seams.
48
www.espmag.co.uk
I spoke to a few of the players about the fantastic turnout and Posh number 19, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing who’s on loan from Wolves told me – “The fans pay their money to come to watch and support us, so it’s only fair that we show our support to them as well.” Striker Craig Mackail-Smith enthused – “The open day’s good because it gives supporters a chance to meet us face to face. They can see us running round the pitch but they don’t really get to see us off it. It’s a great chance to interact and to ask us questions. It’s important for us to spend time with the fans because without them, we wouldn’t have a team!” On my travels I bumped into top Posh fan Charley Cozels, aged 14, getting her shirt signed by fans’ favourite Craig.

“I got here at 12 today to meet all of the players, who signed my Posh shirt, including my favourites George Boyd, Craig Mackail-Smith and Joe Lewis,” Charley told me. “I’ve been a supporter since I was a baby – and was once the youngest ever supporter. I was carried on to the pitch when I was a few days old and I’ve been a season ticket holder ever since! I’ve had a great day.” Another happy camper was our Face of ESP who got to pose for a photograph with Posh Manager, Darren Ferguson (lucky thing) and Mr Posh (I think he’s cool) but as I had my professional ESP reporter hat on, I couldn’t join in! I did however, get to speak to midfielder Charlie Lee and defender Mark Little who told me – “Everyone seems to be enjoying the day. Our game got rescheduled to Monday so it was a great opportunity to meet all of the fans.” Everyone was on form and Charlie Lee was also in a great mood – “We had a positive training session earlier today and the day’s been fun. There aren’t many open days throughout the year so it’s great to meet everyone when we do.” I asked Charlie if Posh are on their way to promotion this season, to which he answered “yes”. I had to admire his confidence and I think I probably agree with him too. He concluded: “It’s great to spend time with our fans on our promotion bid – hopefully they’ll feel part of the journey when we get there!”

THOR Released: April 27
Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins Director: Kenneth Branagh
The God of thunder ignites the traditional opening of the UK summer box-office season – as the May Bank Holiday weekend kicks-off with Thor. With Captain America: The First Avenger coming out later in the season the two movies aim to whet our comic-book appetite before next summer’s The Avengers. Ex-Home & Away Australian star Chris Hemsworth has a lot riding on his shoulders as this hopes to inspire another successful Marvel franchise. Interestingly helmed by our own Kenneth Branagh, this action adventure boasts strong British support with Tom Hiddleston as primary villain Loki, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Ray Stevenson as Volstagg, and Anthony Hopkins as Odin – who banishes magical hammer-wielding Thor from fantastical realm Asgard to live with humans on Earth. But with his head turned by the beautiful Jane Foster – played by Black Swan Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman – the initially arrogant Norse warrior Thor will soon become one of the planet’s most powerful allies. Also expect recurring appearances from Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury and Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson, as Captain America and The Avengers are plugged like they were in last year’s Iron Man 2. Hopefully this won’t detract from the blockbuster action at hand.
Summer starts a week early as the fifth instalment of the revitalised franchise hits the big-screen. This time favourites from the first two sequels – including Tyrese Gibson and Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges – jump on the Fast And Furious gravy train by joining up with the returning Dom Toretto (Diesel), Brian O’Conner (Walker) and Mia (Jordana Brewster).
Released: April 22
Cast: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson Director: Justin Lin
After the successful reboot of the film last time round, expect this to do impressive business with its charismatic casting.

Zack Snyder – the man with the responsibility of rebooting the Superman franchise – will hope this epic action fantasy is more 300 than Watchmen, as Emily Browning’s institutionalised character fights for freedom with the aid of some ass-kicking girls in this lusciously CGi-heavy dream world.
The Social Network’s Jesse Eisenberg, new Catwoman Anne Hathaway and Jamie Foxx add their voices to (yet) another computer-generated animation from the makers of Ice Age, which sees a domesticated macaw swept away on an adventure to Rio de Janerio when he meets the bird of his dreams.
After their failed movie careers, Neve Campbell and the recentlyseparated Courtney Cox and David Arquette are back for the cash as the Ghostface killer returns with more scream-inducing (maybe) horror shenanigans from Wes Craven, who introduces new blood with Julia Roberts’ niece Emma Roberts.
Russell Brand continues his climb up the Hollywood ladder by taking on the role made famous by Dudley Moore, as the irresponsible charmer risks his inheritance by sacrificing his arranged marriage to be with the woman he loves – in this comedy which co-stars Helen Mirren and Jennifer Garner.
This modern retelling of Beauty And The Beast sees Alex Pettyfer’s arrogantly popular teenager get his comeuppance when he’s transformed into everything he despises by a curse. He then has to get someone – possibly High School Musical’s Vanessa Hudgens – to love him for what he is, in order to break the spell.

Review TRON: LEGACY Released: April 18
It’s nearly thirty years since Jeff Bridges starred in the original cult movie – and now he returns in the videogame influenced world which can also be viewed in breathtaking 3D. With his character Sam being stuck in this gladiatorgamed cyber universe for twenty years, his rebellious tech-savvy son Kevin (Garrett Hedlund) looks into his disappearance and soon ends up in the same world – except this time it’s far more dangerous. With the help of fearless warrior Quorra (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-ordeath journey across this visually stunning universe - taking on Brit star Michael Sheen's devious villain along the way.
KILLZONE 3 (PS3) Out now When it comes to heavyweight first-person shooters they don't come much bigger than this blockbuster Playstation exclusive – which is also Move and 3D compatible. A breathtaking campaign mode explores much more of the hostile planet Helghan than its predecessor, with each level gripping in its own particular way – and with the awesome Arc Cannon, wasting bad guys has never been so much fun! The thriving online community and split-screen co-op campaign will ensure you'll keep coming back for more as this becomes an early contender for game of the year.
#####
BULLETSTORM (360/PS3/PC) Out now This is one shooter that won’t quite be fighting Killzone for that title – but it could just be the most fun I’ve ever had playing the genre. This ludicrously funny, blood-splattered, sci-fi gun-fest makes killing a pleasure with a skillshot system where you can impale an enemy on a cactus and be rewarded with massive points for the most gruesome of deaths. It’s almost Gears Of War-lite in gaming terms – coming from the same makers – with a frustratingly linear path that leaves you wanting more. And I for one, want a sequel.
#####
HOMEFRONT (360/PS3/PC) Out now
The sequel is without doubt style over substance – with special effects the real winner here – but this is entertaining fare that could just ignite this revitalised franchise.
With sensational presentation boasting a story from Apocalypse Now scribe John Milius – Homefront delivers an enjoyable experience that most shooter fans should lap up.
#####
Although the campaign mode is a little short, you'll thoroughly enjoy fighting as a member of the American resistance against the fictional Greater Korean Republic – climaxing with a stunning final level on San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. With a solid online mode and some genuinely jaw-dropping moments THQ have done a noteworthy job – despite lacking the magic of the dominant COD series.
UNSTOPPABLE Out now
Denzel Washington and Tony Scott continue their movie-fetish for locomotive-based thrillers – improving on their last entry The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3. This time Washington’s veteran engineer tries to stop a runaway train loaded with toxic chemicals decimating an entire town on impact – aided by Star Trek’s latest Captain Kirk, Chris Pine, as the rookie conductor on his watch.
#####
DRAGON AGE II (360/PS3/PC) Out now After all the plaudits aimed at the original the makers of Mass Effect don’t quite make the same sequel leap experienced between versions of their other award-winning RPG. It does make notable improvements in terms of tweaked graphics, better control system and more engaging conversations due to a Mass Effect style ‘wheel’ – but a surprisingly linear story and repetitive backgrounds hamper it from greatness. But with at least thirty hours-plus of gaming here there’s a lot of fire waiting to be breathed out of this dragon’s belly.
#####
The chemistry between the main characters is pretty engaging, with a few decent one-liners that make you care for these ‘have-a-go’ heroes, in this story based on true events.
FIGHT NIGHT CHAMPION (360/PS3)
But despite trying it’s hardest; Unstoppable never quite finds fourth or fifth gear despite being a serviceable action vehicle – leaving this more in Déjà Vu and Man On Fire territory than Crimson Tide in the Washington/Scott movie catalogue.
Just when you thought Fight Night Round 4 couldn’t be bettered EA pull a masterstroke by introducing boxing innovation that would leave The Hayemaker dizzy.
#####
Out now
The impressive implementation of a Rocky-esque Champion story mode – which takes you from a bare-knuckle fighting prison chump back to a knockout contender – takes the franchise to the next level. Throw in a honed control system and more than fifty licensed boxers – including the aforementioned David Haye – then this really is just champion.
#####
MACHETE Out now
The cult trailer from Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror has spawned a feature-length movie – and it’s actually superior to its original source. Usually bit-part actor Danny Trejo (Desperado) stars as the deadly machete-wielding title character out for revenge against Robert De Niro’s power-mad politician, Don Johnson’s ruthless vigilante and Steven Seagal’s vicious drug lord – but fortunately has priest brother Cheech Marin, immigration agent Jessica Alba and tough revolutionary Michelle Rodriguez in his corner. It’s shamelessly violent and sometimes cringingly over-the-top, but director Rodriguez makes sure you know it has its tongue firmly embedded in cheek, and for that reason it entertains – if admittedly heavily at the male demographic.
#####
DREAMCAST COLLECTION (360/PC) Out now You could nearly shed a tear reading the back cover slogan: ‘Sega’s most beloved Dreamcast games in a must-have collection!’ But that’s sadly where the nostalgia ends as this bizarre wafer-thin concoction really doesn’t do Sega’s cult console justice – Sonic Adventure is awful, Space Channel 5 Pt 2 is just plain weird, and Crazy Taxi (even though still a laugh) hasn’t aged well. It’s actually Sega Bass Fishing which saves it from being a total wash-out, but with much better Dreamcast games available Sega will have to do much better with Vol 2.
#####
ALIEN BREED TRILOGY (360) Out now This may be ‘alien’ to a lot of younger gamers, but Amiga owners will remember legendary developers Team 17 unleashing this little gem in the early nineties. This tidy package from Mastertronic contains the original game rebooted as Evolution, along with sequels Assault and Descent, which bizarrely gets weaker as the simple Aliens movieesque top-down shooter premise loses its shine. But with high production values and a low budget retail price it’s well worth a look whether you’re new to the series or not.

CLUBLAND DAN’S THE HED KANDI MAN
I once had a genius idea (in my opinion) of making dance versions of all the classic Disney songs. I passed on this idea to my DJ mates but from their laughs I can only assume they didn’t see the potential. I wonder what Dan Clare would think to this idea? Dan is a local DJ who you’re bound to hear more about in the next few weeks. Not only because he has several gigs lined up in the city centre, but he also has two of his own remixes being released on the latest Hed Kandi: Back to Disco album. Dan told ESP – “Being included on this Hed Kandi CD feels great as it’s one of the largest and most stylish clubbing brands in the world. I'm looking forward to the exposure it will give me and my other work. I have plenty of tracks in the pipeline that I hope to get released soon.” Wondering how any other DJs in Peterborough could get an opportunity like this, Dan continued to explain – “I run a house music night called Komodo with a guy named Tom Skinner. I started playing around with my own mixes and sent a few to Kiss radio. It was on Kiss that a producer heard my remixes and it all happened from there.” You can check out Dan’s talent for yourself as he has five dates planned at Edwards on Broadway – with the first being on Friday May 13. Also, his remixed tracks (Candi Staton, Young Hearts and Stacy Lattisaw, Jump to the Beat) are available to buy now in stores or to download on iTunes. As for my idea of the Disney dance mixes... watch this space!
FIVE THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT FLARES AND REFLEX!
So when is the last time you checked out Flares & Reflex on Broadway? ESP had been told of a few changes made to the place so we thought we’d check out the venues for ourselves. Our reporter fought past dozens of hen-dos and party goers to find out what the hype was all about. Here are five things we discovered about Peterborough’s popular party venue, which you may not know... 1) Flares plays a wider range of music. Back in the day you’d only hear 70s tunes, and although the venue still plays all the favourites from that particular decade... you’ll also hear the best party songs from the 90s and even early 2000s. 2) Flares and Reflex is attached to Edwards. We all enjoy dancing along to the Bee Gees and Wham, but if a full night of cheesy tunes is just too much, you can walk straight into Edwards for some dance & RnB (without even having to walk outside). 3) Party bookings are free! Having a reserved area, free drink on arrival, queue jump and merchandise sounds expensive, but this won’t cost you a penny. Just make sure you book well in advance. 4) There is regularly a themed night going on. In the last couple of months, staff and customers have dressed in army, Rocky Horror, and Baywatch costumes. The best way to find out about future events is by checking out their Facebook page (Flares Reflex Peterborough). 5) You’ll feel like you’ve travelled back in time – not just because of the music. Reflex has gone all out with making you feel like you’re back in the 80s. Having the DeLorean from Back To The Future hanging above the bar, and Kitt from Knight Rider coming out of the wall is certainly going above and beyond.

After being sidelined with swine flu last month Andy has a last chat for now with a local musician who’s contributed to the vibrancy of the city music scene. So before he wanders into festival mode and regales us of his top tips and antics, he catches up with Paul Henderson front man of Aladdinsane.
David Bowie is put quite simply, a legend. A musical, theatrical genius who has reinvented himself often and with such success his popularity has spanned the generations since his rise to fame in the late sixties. To emulate his massive personality and charisma, let alone his music talent, is a tall order but to do it well and become renowned for it is special. Before the alter ego Paul Henderson was a fan of Bowie, a massive fan. “I had all the records, all the posters – I was a bit obsessive I suppose!” he tells me. Being a nine year-old in Sunderland you could forgive Paul for missing Bowie’s early work but he didn’t, the interest and studious approach to him had begun. Catapult six years on and at 15 he had his first guitar. “I’d knock out Beatles’ tunes on this six-string I bought, and Bowie songs of course. I used to think, ‘how did that go?’ and try and work it out thinking, ‘there must be an easier way to play this’.” Again we steam forward to 1987 and Paul had his first band, Nightshift. “We did the circuit, you know, The Cherry Tree, Norfolk, Crown, as you do. We played Bowie, the Beatles, Stones that kinda stuff.” As bands do (kind of like a rite of passage) they did the gigs, had some fun, honed the skills of the trade and called it a day. As a more confident singer/guitarist Paul started to write his own songs – “I wasn’t gigging or anything, just writing stuff and enjoying it,” he explains. His creative period was
54
www.espmag.co.uk
massively interrupted when he appeared on Stars In Your Eyes in ‘92 as yes, David Bowie. Although it was a good experience and gave him national exposure nothing too much came of it so Paul formed the band Cerulean playing a mix of his own songs and a few covers. “We did the circuit and all around East Anglia to be fair and had a good following, it was great to see people enjoying the stuff I’d written,” he reflects, however, like Nightshift before them, the band had its day and came to an end. As 2003 approached friends and fans were saying to Paul he should do a Bowie tribute so he did. The band – Mark Hatton on drums, Dan Elliman on keys, Carl Stones on guitar and the living leg end that is my old friend (20 years) Franco Caprio on bass, rehearsed for that year and started gigging in 2004 as Aladdinsane. Locally it went down a storm. “We were filling pubs more, and I thought, I am really gonna enjoy this and too much!” Playing your boyhood hero in front of crowds of fans is I guess, enjoyable!
Then a follow-up email from the band’s drummer Mark engineered a meeting of the agent and singer with T-Rexstasy in the form of an audition at The Cherry Tree. “It was packed, but they really enjoyed it.” That was it. They were on the tour, a year long theatre tour with one of the most respected tribute bands and for one of the best agencies, all in five short years. “It was incredible to have 900 fans at a sell out gig in Truro, I’m so lucky to have the chance to do it. It’s hard work but I can’t believe that I am doing it sometimes. The fans say, ‘can I have your autograph David’ and I’m like, ‘my name is Paul’.”
“The fans say, ‘can I have your autograph David’ and I’m like, ‘my name is Paul’.”
The turning point came after a chance meeting with the agent and singer of T-Rextasy – “We said, ‘yeh, we’ll email you’… I didn’t, but my wife Tracey did.” Behind every good man as they say folks….
And that is the sum of the parts, Paul is a modest man who is enjoying his success and fame somewhat without falling into the image that he personifies on stage. A rock star on stage he may be, a humble, grateful man off stage he is too. Paul has hopes to go pro with the band and keep at it for the foreseeable future. I for one wouldn’t begrudge him that small dream at all – it would be the least he deserves.

Festival Time! ESP’s resident festy reporter Andy Slater his been buffing his camper van ready for the new season and begins his guide to some of the best smaller festivals around… Dust off your tents, re-tax the camper van and increase weekly your alcohol consumption as festival season is rapidly approaching. We have a new VW to christen and hopefully dozens of stories of foolhardy capers from now until September to tell. I would imagine that in the chaos that is summer we will meet old friends, some new friends and see and hear some great music. So where to start? Bearded Theory, May 13 – 15, Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire is a mighty fine place to start. Now in its fourth year we were there last time and it was brilliant. So much so it will become an annual event I would guess. The line up is as diverse as it gets with Athlete, The Waterboys, Alabama 3, The Undertones, The Beat, The UK Subs, Zion Train and Trans Global Underground to name but a few of the 100 or more acts playing over seven stages. Last year the Cheeky Girls put in an appearance in front of a packed tent on the Sunday, this year it’s Wagner from X Factor providing the triviality. A word on the venue, Kedleston Hall is a stunning National Trust property five miles from Derby so no tatty old farm in the middle of nowhere to find. The festival prides itself on being family orientated and brands itself as Derbyshire’s biggest family festival with loads of kids stuff including fire shows and bedtime stories. If fancy dress is your idea of fun to celebrate their move to such a grand venue Sunday is ‘Lords and Ladies’ day, couple this with the world record attempt at having the most people in one place with false beards and the mind boggles! The great bearded lady perhaps? Anyway it’s a great festival well run and very friendly with just enough bars to keep you merry, enough food stalls to keep you sustained and just enough trade stalls to invite your money to leave your pocket. One of the best things
56
www.espmag.co.uk
about Bearded is that it has not succumbed to the commerciality of some of the other festivals so it is also good for the soul…if you go check out Ferocious Dog www.myspace.com/ferociousdog, we saw them last year and loved ‘em. Visit www.bearded theory.co.uk for all the info but basically you get all the above and more for £70 with under 16s £34, under 12s £24 and under 5s free! See you there maybe? A couple of weeks later on May 27 – 30, Glastonbudget returns. Britain’s biggest tribute band festival, this bank holiday weekend event has become a must for a lot of Peterborough folk. Tribute bands galore, new music, the now obligatory fancy dress competition (our girls came 3rd last year) real ale and cider all pointing to a heady mix for the weekend. It’s only a short drive from the Boro just near Loughborough and for £58 you get The Jam, Lady Gaga, Erasure, Nickleback (Alfie will be pleased) Kasabian, Pink Floyd and Meat Loaf to name but a few. Not the real thing you understand but very often just as good. I reckon this is my fourth or fifth time and it gets better each year, where else can you watch The Kinks have a chat with a gorilla and Amy Winehouse and then watch The Prodigy? Well you can at Glastonbudget – I did! Again plenty of bars, stalls and food outlets to keep you occupied between bands and the stewards are very friendly too. Visit www.glastonbudget.net for the details and booking. So there are a couple to whet your appetite, get you in the mood, now… where did I put my false beard and ballgown????

PUB GUIDE News BEER FESTIVAL TIME!
Photos: Mike Harris
Forget spring, err… ‘springing’ and all that – the exciting news is, beer festival season is back in full swing! So get out there this month, make the most of the hols and settle down with a decent pint. Here’s a quick guide to some of the best…
PLOUGHMAN PRESENTED WITH PRIZE It’s always great to see hard work being rewarded, so when CAMRA gave the Ploughman in Werrington their Peterborough and District Pub Of The Year award, we just had to go and check it out. Following a campaign to save the building from being bulldozed which got the support of thousands of local residents, landlords Andy and Stuart Simmonds began the long, hard, task of turning it around. With loads of local real ales in good condition attracting a large group of regulars, the pub is almost unrecognisable – for the better! City MP Stewart Jackson was there to toast their success along with CAMRA LocAle Officer and Werrington resident, John Rice and branch chairman, Dave Murray. The Ploughman was, until recently, earmarked for demolition as part of a multi-million pound redevelopment plan. Following a Save Our Pub campaign which was backed by hundreds of local residents the licensees were able to postpone any further expansion by the neighbouring Tesco store and the future’s looking bright.

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…
When you hear that there’s a new band called Rocket ’57 about to be launched in Peterborough you probably guess that some rock ‘n’ roll is on the cards. Sure enough, the band takes 1957 as their inspiration and will focus very much on music from the likes of Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley.
NEW ROCK ‘N’ ROLL BAND ROCKET ONTO THE SCENE
Rocket ’57 is a three piece band consisting of Claude Domino (guitar and vocals), Lorretta ‘Boom Boom’ Black (drums) and Bertie Hornchurch (bass and vocals). All stage names! Claude Domino told ESP that the band’s primarily about having fun – “We genuinely love this style of music and are very respectful of it. But we don’t attempt to play it exactly like the records and our shows will be about fun rather than giving people a history lesson. If people are out for a good time we want to give it to them.” The band’s launch gig is in the intimate setting of the Cellar Bar, Thorpe Road, on Saturday April 9 starting at 9pm. Entry is free. You can find out more about the band at www.rocket57.net
EXPERIENCE ELO @ THE CRESSET Photo: Mike Harris
Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) were formed to accommodate Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne’s desire to create modern rock and pop songs with classical overtones. They released eleven studio albums between the 70s and 80s . ELO produced a big and successful sound with songs like the heavy Rockaria, The Diary of Horace Wimp to the lighter Telephone Lines. All extravagant productions which will no doubt be featured in a concert when the ELO Experience appear at the Cresset on April 1. Tickets from the Cresset box office on 01733 265705.
LLOYD AND THE CATS ROCK THE FLEET!
I would’ve thought it’s been very rare indeed to see local bluesman Lloyd Watson on the same bill as Peterborough’s popular swing jive band, One Eyed Cats. But you can on Good Friday, April 22, at the Fleet in Fletton. Rumour has it that Lloyd actually performed with The Cats at his sister’s wedding reception and they couldn’t get him off stage! And it’s the same person who’s responsible again for their Good Friday co-appearance. Norma Watson-Palmer was understandably upset, not to mention angry, when her goddaughter and bridesmaid Katie Smith was diagnosed with cancer just before Christmas. Katie is 16 and maintaining a positive attitude to the treatment. When Norma told big brother Lloyd how she felt, he made the very philosophical comment – “Don’t get angry – get positive,” and so taking that advice Norma has arranged the event. The Lloyd Watson Band were booked and then One Eyed Cats frontman, Simon Russell confirmed their appearance. It will be raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust which is providing Katie with support. The Trust is presently raising funds to establish a purpose-built unit for teenagers at Addenbrookes. All artists will be performing free and there promises to be some valuable raffle prizes on the night including some unique memorabilia. It’s a night that will bring together some of Peterborough’s finest musical talent and shouldn’t be missed. Tickets are selling fast so be quick – call 07926 781560 .

THE CROWN GOES LIVE AGAIN!
I have some great memories of the Crown Inn on Lincoln Road in its heyday. It had a great atmosphere and there were some brilliant nights. I particularly remember a night when The Groundhogs featuring TS Mcphee played a fantastic gig there. After a long period of musical silence, the pub’s recently been refurbished by landlord Bryan Gascoyne and its really pleasing to see that the Crown is bringing back live music to the New England area. One of the first bands to be playing there will be Frankly My Dear. It gives Frankly’s Mick Davison the chance to return to an old haunt of his on Saturday April 23. Mick and Les Woods regularly gigged there back in the 80s as the Davison Woods band. (I used to love the Sunday lunchtimes – a very civilised way to spend a rest day). It’ll be nice to see some of the old crowd turn up on the night to support the band, and venue, for a great night of live music. Hopefully this will be the beginning of many live gigs putting The Crown back at the top as a live music pub once again.
Live Music NO-FEST 2
JOE DRISCOLL @ THE TAP Fresh from his US tour, Joe Driscoll will call into the Brewery Tap on April 15. It’s his first gig in the city for over two years, and recently one of his songs, Riddum, was picked up by Nokia for a TV commercial. His sound is unique – using a loop pedal, he creates live samples by beatboxing and playing guitar, creating relaxed, hip-hop inflected (almost) acoustic songs. His new album sees him broadening his sound, incorporating a saxophonist and an African kora player. To listen, visit http://joedriscoll.net. Entry on the night is free! It’s been a while since we heard from Dr A’s (Blues Consortium). But for those who’ve waited patiently they’re back as Dr A’s Rhythm & Grooves and with a new album called ‘3 of 9’..

The CD brings a wide range of original songs together with their own unique interpretations of material from the likes of Peter Green, T-Bone Walker, Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry and Mark Knopfler. Rhythm & Grooves’ styles range from swing to jazz, with mellow to raunchy and a good number of the songs on the album will feature at their up and coming local gigs. They’re at the Cock Inn, Werrington on Saturday April 9 and the following weekend at the Crown Inn, Lincoln Road, New England on Sunday April 17. GET WELL SOON BEN! You may have caught King’s Cliffe lads Fenech Soler’s singles, Lies and Demons, on the radio recently, and heard their Live Lounge performance for BBC Radio 1 – but sadly, their upcoming tour’s been postponed. Lead singer Ben Duffy has been diagnosed with testicular cancer and will be spending the next few months undergoing chemotherapy. When caught early, as Ben’s was, it is highly treatable and the band are looking forward to festival dates this summer, including Bestival and Lovebox. Ben’s bandmates Ross, Andrew and Daniel said – “We’re absolutely gutted for him, but know that he’s in capable hands and he’s in really good spirits considering the news. He has a short course of chemo treatment to get through and will be back fighting fit in a couple of months – the recovery rate for testicular cancer is extremely high.”
SAM AND THE JAX JOIN UP ON VIDEO We have some great local talent here and it’s doubly good when they get together. Local band Whisky Jax have joined up with Peterborough filmmaker Sam Dovaston on their new video Bermuda Lies. Sam told ESP – “The band had heard about me being a filmmaker from Peterborough through a mutual friend (Aaron Lonergann who also worked on the video) and I was also aware of the band, so we decided to combine our talents and work together.” Sam and the band shot the video in four hours and finished the edit within just two days and have been really chuffed with the results and the reaction.
The music of American singer songwriter Ryan Adams is the subject of a special evening at the XXI club in Priestgate (formerly City Club) on Friday April 1. It’ll feature Gavin Hyde (of the Brays) and Glockenshiels (Candle Thieves) who’ll be joined by some of the best musicians from the Peterborough area to unite in a one-off special tribute show dedicated to an unsung hero of rock and roll. The gig’s bound to feature songs from Ryan’s classic albums; Heartbreaker, Gold, and Love Is Hell, amongst many others. Tickets are available by emailing Gavin.hyde@Hotmail.co.uk
Here’s something different to do on a Sunday afternoon – No-Fest 2 is taking place at Club Dissident on April 24. All the bands have a punk attitude, but their sound ranges from the rip-yourface-off to gentle acoustic, dark and angsty to light and poppy and if you’ve not been to this kind of gig before, it’s a chance to see what the scene has to offer. About 10 bands are playing, including Above Them, Vanilla Pod, Apologies, I Have None, Broken Few, Cynics and Helen Chambers. Kicking off at 2.30pm, entry’s just £6 – not bad for the number of bands!
“The response from their fans and Facebook page has been great,” said Sam “We’re very excited about their next song soon to be released, Beast, and are in the process of brainstorming concepts for that video which I’ll also direct. Me and the band got on really well whilst shooting the video and are really excited that there’s exciting and upcoming talent in Peterborough to work with!” Sam’s now working with local fashion designer Enya Patricia on a cool and edgy high end fashion film for her new range. To view the band’s video go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPZcHJtUu-s
All proceeds from their next single, Stop And Stare, will be going to the Teenage Cancer Trust and it’s released on April 18. Everyone here at ESP would like to wish Ben a speedy recovery, and the best of luck for the future. For more info, visit www.fenechsoler.co.uk and www.teenagecancertrust.org Liv Slater
WHO’S WHO IN BOURNE One to look out for next month is a great live gig for fans of The Who over at Bourne Corn Exchange. WHO’s WHO’s exciting live performances with Townshend’s leaping and Daltrey’s microphone whirling antics have received incredible reactions across the UK, Europe and beyond. But it’s not just about the theatrics; WHO’s WHO is widely recognised and respected and their interpretation of the original sound is widely regarded as the best (and closest) that anyone will ever get to evoke the feeling and energy of The Who at their peak! Catch them on May 14. Tickets are £10 and £12 on the door. Box office 0782 803 2241.
