accessible to a modern audience which the actors have a real ownership of'. APPEAL LAUNCHED FOR NEW
STATE-OF-THE-ART HOSPICE
Hands up if you’ve ever fundraised for Thorpe Hall – well now you need to ramp it up for the biggie!
Plans for the new hospice
Thorpe Hall Hospice and the Sue Ryder charity are close to many people’s hearts here in Peterborough and ESP Magazine has always been a big supporter. This year the charity’s not only celebrating its 60th anniversary but has just launched a £6m appeal for a new state-ofthe-art hospice. That’s big bucks folks, and in hard times, so we all need to do what we can to help. Let us know what you’re doing and we’ll do our very best to promote your event here and on www.espmag.co.uk as we rally support for this huge appeal. Sue Ryder has been providing hospice, long-term and respite care for people living with incurable illness from this beautiful historical building in Peterborough for over twenty years. However due to its Grade I listed status the four-century-old building can’t be adapted to ensure the charity can operate the best and most suitable care environment. Now a new appeal’s just been officially launched to build a new state-of-the-art hospice within the grounds of Thorpe Hall. Official patron of the capital appeal is HRH the Duchess of Gloucester. Some work’s already underway and the whole building project should be completed by the end of 2015 when the new hospice will be ready to open. Philip Ball, Palliative Care Services Manager at Sue Ryder –Thorpe Hall, told ESP – “Dame Cicely Saunders said, ‘How people die remains in the memory of those who live on.’ Our passion is providing the best possible home for these memories. We only have one chance and we want to get it right. Our staff and patients are as excited as I am about this project. The new hospice will be treasured and ensure we can offer local people quality palliative care for decades to come.” We all know Thorpe Hall is a beautiful building, but it’s not ideal as a hospice with shared rooms split over two floors and when people are very ill and fragile, it’s really difficult for them to access the gardens to get some fresh air. The charity’s vision is for a new hospice, to sit beside and complement the existing building which will allow them to increase capacity and to offer even better care. Don’t worry – the hall itself will remain and house their offices, conference facilities, training spaces and some events.
So – here’s where you guys come in. The charity needs the support of local groups, businesses and individuals in order to raise the £6m necessary to make this project happen. There are loads of ways to get involved and support the appeal – by making a donation, organising a fundraising event or taking part in one or just by donating goods and supporting one of the local Sue Ryder shops. Just £50 could pay for a course of bereavement sessions while £1,000 could pay to furnish and decorate their new counselling room. As it’s also the charity’s 60th anniversary they’re adopting the theme of vintage tea parties – so why not throw one of those and raise a few quid? Any fundraising, large or small will make a difference so get thinking! If you want to support the appeal just get in touch with the fundraising team on 01733 330060, email anewthorpehall@sueryder.org or visit www.thorpehall.org

POP AROUND PETERBOROUGH ESP is once again partnering up to support Pop Around Peterborough, a fun fundraising event in aid of Arthritis Research UK. If you fancy an easy stroll setting off from a pub, a great atmosphere and the chance to win loads of prizes whilst having a good time, this is the easiest event to take part in! Pop Around Peterborough launched last year and saw 200 walkers raise over £6,000. The charity wants you, your friends, family, and even the pet dog to take part… This year it’s being held on Sunday May 19 and it starts and finishes at The Boat House Pub. It’s a great opportunity to stretch your legs on a scenic 5 mile route – you’ll be given a balloon which you pop at the finish line to find out if you’ve won a prize. These include some great family days out, meals in local restaurants, vouchers for local stores and loads more! Michael Clarke, the event organiser and Regional Fundraising Manager for Arthritis Research UK told ESP – “Arthritis Research decided on the walk being five miles as it’s challenging yet manageable for most ages. There are over 10 million people in the UK right now suffering from Arthritis, so nearly everyone will know someone close to them affected. Everyone can help make a change to people’s lives by signing up to this walk.” Entry for Pop Around Peterborough is just £5 per person which includes a fantastic goodie-bag and the chance of winning many prizes worth hundreds of pounds. For more info on Pop Around Peterborough or Arthritis Research UK contact Michael Clarke by emailing m.clarke@arthritisresearchuk.org or call 01733 331721. Organisers says that it’s impossible to imagine petite little Lisa doing such a difficult job, but its made her very popular and on her last visit to Truckfest she had the longest queues that any TV star has ever had such is her popularity. Truckfest’s spokesperson Colin Ward told ESP – "The recent bad weather we’ve had here in the UK would be nothing to Lisa with her experience. We’re looking forward to having her back, especially as Ice Road Truckers remains one of the most popular documentaries on UK television."

KNOBWORTH RETURNS! It’s back! Saturday May 4 and Sunday May 5 (May Bank Holiday weekend) the beer garden at the Angel Inn Yarwell will play host to the 2nd annual Knobworth Festival! This great little music, real ale and cider festival was devised to raise awareness of testicular and prostate cancer – and the pub is hoping to get a local GP to be there to offer advice on the subject. There’ll be live music from Lexi Green and The Indigo Blue, Blackout, The Helix, We Sell Tigers and Four Wheel Drive, all MC’ed by Peterborough FM’s Rurality Show DJs Jim Boulton and Olly Thorley. Entrance is free, but they tell us donations will be ‘extracted’ from people in various guises – whether it be dedications, auctions, T shirt sales and participation in quizzes and games. Last year the event raised over £1600 for the charity and is looking to beat that this year.

MY WORD OF THE MONTH
Talented
MARVIN WAS MARVELOUS AND ROY JONES IS NEXT It was Marvin Hagler’s only dinner show appearance in the UK this year and almost 200 of us got the chance to shake hands and have a chat with one of boxing’s greatest talents. This once in a lifetime opportunity to meet one of my all time heroes was made possible by Kevin Sanders, who over the years has brought boxing legends to Peterborough for us to be in awe of. Securing the presence of Hagler means Kevin’s managed to bring us the four kings of middleweight boxing from an era when the sport was at its glorious best. Peterborough has hosted Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns but Kevin saved the best until last. He told me – “My wife and I have been putting on dinner shows with the best boxers in the world for 16 years and Marvin has to be up there with the very finest. Every show has been sold out and tickets for this one flew out faster than we could print them. ESP magazine has been a great support in recent years and I’d like to thank them for getting behind the shows with you as their boxing writer.”

Very kind words indeed from Mr Sanders, who brings us Roy Jones Junior on Saturday May 11 at Radius as the next boxing dinner gem. Roy Jones Junior won titles at almost every weight conceivable and will definitely have some cracking stories to share with us boxing aficionados. But meeting Marvin Hagler will take some topping. I managed to grab a word with the great man and his Italian wife just before proceedings and I was taken aback by his charisma and charm. I asked him why he moved to Italy after retiring and he simply pointed at his wife and said – “That’s why. Need I say more?” For a man who was one of the most feared men in boxing, he had a humble, cheerful and sincere side on show at the dinner. Marvin’s not known for signing memorabilia, but he signed everyone’s programme and spent ample time chatting and joking with fans as they had their photo taken with him. If Roy Jones Junior is half as good as what Marvin was then we’re in for another top evening in the presence of another great champion. For tickets, call Kevin on 01733 371912 or 07872 601467.

There was a time when talented was used to describe people with talent. How that’s changed: Rylan, AC Milan, Wagner, Cheryl Cole, Keanu Reeves, Felipe Massa, Nicole Sherzinger, Andy Carroll, Audley Harrison, Jimmy Carr, Jordan, Kerry Katona, Joe Pasquale, Adrian Chiles – the list goes on! What a diluted word talented is.
ALL ABOARD THE GS! The Balderson crew really did go to town on their launch of the BMW R 1200 GS when yours truly and 149 other handpicked guests were treated to a nostalgic ride on one of Nene Valley’s finest steam trains to Wansford where the bike was stylishly unveiled. The unveiling plans were a big secret and all we were told was to meet at the Orton Mere platform and wait for a train. For a minute I thought we were being sent to Germany to see the bike roll off the production line, but then I’d overheard head salesman TJ telling a colleague he was looking forward to a beer at The Plough in Farcet later that evening. Still, the suspense was intense and the train journey teased us by first chuffing along to the city centre before turning around and heading for Wansford. We finally disembarked in darkness but for two floodlit areas on the platform where the bikes were proudly sat in all their glory. Another GS was parked up inside the station and they were officially unveiled by double Guinness World Record holders and directors of GlobeBusters Motorcycle Adventure tours, Kevin & Julia Sanders. Top marks to the boys (and ladies) at Balderston for presenting the new GS in such an unusual and unique way. Up until then, my normal Friday night suspense would be waiting with anticipation for the meat counter guy in Morrisons to see how much he’d mark down the price of pre-cooked chicken. I really enjoyed the experience – and the hot soup afterwards. You can check out the new GS (without the soup, but there’s tea / coffee and biscuits) at the Balderston showroom in Hampton. See more at www.espmag.co.uk

VIVA-LA-ROCKREUNION! Check this out on Facebook – it’s been a long time coming but there’s finally going to be a VivaLa-Rock reunion and I can’t wait to be there. For readers under the age of 40, here’s a brief synopsis of the legendary venue. Viva-La-Rock was a night-club located by the edge of the town bridge, opposite the police station and next to a sex shop. It was demolished in the 1990s and is now a block of flats, which is part of Rivergate. Viva-La-Rock was situated above the Papa Luigi restaurant and was opened by brothers Tony and Sebastian Scibelli and their business partner Stef Malajny. The three of them introduced pizza delivery to the UK in 1982 when they took over the Kebab House and Taverna Bar, which eventually became Papa Luigi and Viva-La-Rock. I’m proudly connected to this memorable period in our city’s night scene, as Tony and Seb are my uncles. I have vivid memories of Viva and worked at the venue when I was 14. It was my job to collect entry money from behind a desk that was placed halfway up the longest flight of stairs ever. There were no tills in those days; I was given a cash box and a £50 float. To protect me and the cash were doormen (and handy boxers) Nigel Fairbairn and Lenny Gloucester. I remember trying Crucial Brew for the first time (naughty I know) and I also remember the mysterious black grime on the floors. Most of all I remember the music. It was varied and alternative, but there was always room for plenty of street sounds and it was this scene that got me started on my Electro collection – all purchased from Andy’s Records on Bridge Street. The reunion is being organised by Graham Fairbairn and profits will be donated to the CRY Organisation (Cardiac Risk in the Young). The big night takes place at the Brewery Tap on Saturday April 27 and minimum entry (without me and my cash box) is just £3 with donations above the entry fee going towards CRY. Former Viva DJ favourite Dave Allen will reprise his role on the decks and will be supported by guest DJs. Tony, Seb and Stef and staff members from back in the day will also be in attendance for what I’m sure will be a night to remember. Graham told me – “I decided to organise a reunion after reminiscing with several friends. Viva was without doubt the most unique club of its day in Peterborough and very few places have come close to replicating it. It’s interesting that people still regularly talk fondly about it to this today. It’s even more interesting that I’ve probably spoken to more people who claimed to have attended Viva than actually did! Such is Viva’s legend.”

The Key Theatre’s monthly comedy club promises another night of brilliant stand-up with established TV comedian and multi-award winning performer Rob Rouse. He’ll be joined by musical comedienne Carly Smallman, described by GQ magazine as ‘the most exciting female act in the country right now’ along with the winner of the Chortle Student Comedian of the Year 2012, Kwame Asante. Box office: 01733 207239.
SO COMEDY NIGHT So I've been studying the City Council's vision of future city centre growth over the next 10-15 years, the various development sites and regeneration quarters, but unbelievably there are no plans for it to include 'The Stairway to Heaven'. (My suggestion for a Led Zeppelin theme pub). As far as the council’s concerned it's a case of ‘No quarter given’. Ha Ha! I am of course joking. After last month when I gave page space to 'Mrs Brown's Boy's' I know some readers thought I'd lost my sense of humour, but I think you'll agree that by starting this month with a long-winded set up to a punchline that requires knowledge of a 40 year-old song from Led Zep's album 'Houses of the Holy' I've still got it… Now, as regular readers will know I've been making superb suggestions for years about ways to improve Peterborough. Who can forget my idea to turn the Cathedral Square fountains into a drive through car wash and council tax bills to be sent out in envelopes made of chamois leather? Or the time I tried to sell the Hampton Tump to Donald Trump so he could call it 'The Trump Tump' and build a hotel named after it? Well, now I’ve come up with my greatest idea EVER in ESP history. One of my favourite cities in the world is Dublin, a city inextricably linked with Guinness. It fuels Dublin's economy and the St James Brewery which doubles up as a working museum is a major tourist destination and even people who don't drink Guinness love Guinness. When Dublin born Darragh MacAnthony became Peterborough United chairman in September 2006, I suggested that rather than model our city centre on the likes of Leicester and Norwich we look to emulate the popularity and feel good factor associated with Dublin and rename ourselves 'Peteo'borough'. However over the last seven years I've heard more people call it 'Piotrborough' (a big YAKSHEMASH to all those that do, especially if you've washed my car at Homebase or Dobbies).
16
www.espmag.co.uk
Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, my greatest idea. Imagine a brewery, built overlooking the River Nene (like the Guinness one overlooking Dublin's River Liffey). It'll create jobs, get cash pumping into our night time economy, and become a tourist attraction with a drinks product and brand as strong as Guinness, except it won't be just another franchise like Starbucks or Nandos are in the city. It'd be an independent product unique to Peterborough. Something so brilliant, Aston from JLS will want a tattoo of it on his other arm. Instead of an Irish stout, it'll be a 'Posh Stout' – thanks to the revolutionary way it'll be brewed in Peterborough. By using a state of the art brewing method I call 'poshification', it'll be made using purified water from the River Nene, which means I can then call the drink 'GUINENESS'. That's right 'Guineness'. How's that for a pure genius idea?! I've even thought of how to get the characteristic burnt after taste that Guinness has. Our Face of ESP compere Ian Gray accidentally burnt his garden shed down a few years ago and he keeps the ashes in an urn in his downstairs toilet alongside all his cricket memorabilia, so I'll just make him the Guineness 'Head of Burning Things'. And once my drink’s up and running and raking in a fortune, it'll become the main shirt sponsor of Peterborough United (like Soda Stream in the 80s). I'm hopeful the next time the council consults the public on the redevelopment plans there'll be a question on there that asks what people will want to drink in 15 years time? Imported lager from a franchise that tastes of horse wee, or 'Guineness' made from malt, barley, River Nene water and burnt garden sheds. Right, that's all the funny stuff you're getting out of me this month. NOW GO AND WATCH SOME LIVE COMEDY!

Show your independent flare with Tahlias Closet and stand out from the crowd… Every shopaholic loves to see a good blend of popular high street chains and independent stores and if you love your accessories Tahlia’s Closet on Cowgate (opposite Prezzo) is one that gets our vote! Independent retailers in the city are joining forces with a new group to push what they have to offer. Members include Melanie Richard’s Hair Boutique, Cosmetics Inc, Reba, Janson Hong, Barista and Burghley Flowers to name but a few and of course Tahlias Closet. They hope to produce a map guiding shoppers to the niche outlets available.
Since opening Tahlias Closet in October 2011 owner Natasha Fierro has brought style fans some fantastic jewellery and accessories. “I’ve built up an amazing little family of followers who know exactly what they'll get on every visit to the shop,” says Natasha. “This isn't just a beautiful, unique, statement piece of jewellery or other accessories – they know I'll have developed a genuine interest in their likes and previous pieces purchased on other visits.” Independent retailers have to work hard to stand out and Natasha’s made good use of every opportunity including social media.
“The likes of Instagram, Twitter and Facebook have been an extension to the service that I'm able to offer in store,” says Natasha. “On my social media links I create stacks all day every day giving people ideas and inspiration on how to accessorise the simplest of outfits. I love to accessorise my own outfits with either scarves jewellery or brooches, sometimes even using earrings as brooches so I’m always playing!” Natasha initially set up the shop as a pop up and didn't have intentions of carrying on into 2012 but now in 2013 her shop is still going strong and there’s a possible move of location to come very soon!
Scarf £12.50
“Apart from my 4 year-old boss ‘Tahlia’ one of the other things that puts the biggest smile on my face is when my customers tell me the compliments they've had when out and about wearing Tahlias Closet accessories and how they can't wait to add to their collection!” So make sure you support the independent operations like Tahlias Closet as Natasha says, you might just find you get better service and product knowledge. he prairie look has come down from the hills and into our high street shops. However the hillbilly look has come a long way giving us now beautiful vibrant prints with neons, metallics and pastels. As a lover of all things bright I'm in paradise and can’t wait to colour clash with all the striking colours present. Gucci along with others have gone big on prints this season from floral to animal print but let’s face it, filling up our wardrobes with their price tags would be a costly affair so I've picked up some key items that will act as staples to see you through this summer’s key trends and mix beautifully with simple Tshirts and jeans. This season’s floral brights follows through into the makeup. Think big beautiful glossy lips or bold striking eyes. Try to do one or the other and not both together as the 80s look is not yet back on trend! Don't be a wallflower... be bold and have fun! Natasha

Perkins Great Eastern Run 2013 ESP’s Mikey Clarke is preparing to ditch the snacks and hit the road to raise cash for Arthritis Research UK and says you can do it too! You can now sign up to the Perkins Great Eastern Run, 2013. If you’ve never taken part before, I highly recommend you do so. This popular annual event brings out the best of our city. I’ve taken part a few times and am always touched by the amount of people outside of their homes cheering me and the other runners on. I’ve witnessed shop owners handing out free drinks, whilst kids share their jellybeans to give you that extra boost of energy. This year’s race takes place on Sunday October 13 at 10.30am. You can enter the half marathon or the 5k fun run by simply visiting www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk The new route gives people better spectator views as well as runners a chance to improve on their previous personal best times. It now starts and finishes on the Embankment (previously started on Long Causeway).
I will once again be taking part myself. But here’s the thing… I’ve never taken it seriously before. I didn’t train or diet properly and always ended up walking most of the route. I promise you that will not be the case this year. I promise to run the entire half marathon and I’ll be updating you on my training progress. This will be in future editions of ESP Magazine and on our website – www.espmag.co.uk. I’ll be interviewing local running clubs, talking to local food experts about what I should be eating and sharing my pain! I hope this blog will inspire a few of you to take part in the run also. Because if a lazy, takeaway addict like me can do it… so can you!

The Voice UK is back and ESP’s Sarah Tempest is ready to swivel her chair and eye up the talent…
So what can we expect from the new series? Well, there’s been none of the are they/aren’t they shenanigans of the X Factor as all four superstar coaches, Sir Tom Jones, Jessie J, will-i-am and The Script’s Danny O’Donaghue are returning for series 2. The format’s largely unchanged although there are a couple of twists along the way. As before, the competition begins with the ‘blind auditions’, where the coaches have their backs to the contestants and each performance is judged solely on the sound of the artist’s voice. If the coaches like what they hear, they have the option to ‘hit the button’ and turn their chair. If only one coach turns their chair, the performer wins a place on their team; if more than one turns, power reverts to the performer and they get to choose whose team they would like to be on. Confused? You will be. In the ‘battle round’ the coaches pair their 12 team members off to sing against each other in a vocal showdown to decide who’ll make it through to the next round but, and here’s the twist, this year the coaches will each have the chance to ‘steal’ one battle loser for their team. It’s at this point Jessie J says the banter between the coaches really gets going – “Sometimes I have to remember I am on TV and calm down when I’m in the chair, but during the filming of the Battle Rounds, I was so shocked at some of the decisions made that I could not hide it in my face – and I said so.” Then it’s the ‘knockout stages’ where the judges have to decide which three of their acts make it through to the final stage, the live finals, where we, the viewer, finally have our say and get to vote on who gets sent home each week. All the coaches agree that the standard is higher this year, with Sir Tom Jones commenting that, “There are more talented people on this series than there was last year,” while coach and ESP cover star Jessie J is especially looking forward to this year’s competition. “I’d like to think my team is the strongest,” she says. “They are young, fresh, happy and interesting when it comes to the vocals. They are an eclectic mix. I feel so honoured to be in a position to be able to give something back. It is the reason why I love doing The Voice so much. “The Artists have been more confident of themselves. They know how the show works. Overall, the Blind Auditions were stronger this year. I can’t put my finger on exactly why, but I think we had far more ‘better’ people audition
than last year. At the same time, there is that extremity where there were a few ‘worse’ people than last year too!” Although Jessie J is no stranger to reinventing her style, she’s set to showcase a very different look for the live finals this year as she recently had all her hair shaved off for Comic Relief. “If shaving my hair off saves some lives, gives people confidence or buys a machine for a hospital ward, then that has to be a good thing,” she says. “I am not doing this to sell records. I am doing it because I want to help.” Peterborough musician Murray Hockridge did us proud on last year’s The Voice and his career has gone from strength to strength. Murray had never considered going on a talent show before but was attracted to this show’s format – the fact that it is ‘all about the voice’, and also the nurturing role of the superstar coaches. He said – “You have this minute-and-ahalf to impress four people who have terrific careers in the business and who are looking to coach, rather than actually judge and put down.” Murray said he had closed his eyes for the final notes of his ‘blind audition’ performance to, “give it everything,” during which, thankfully, coach Danny O’Donoghue hit his button and turned round to win Murray a place on his team. Murray added – “I opened my eyes and Danny was waving his hands at me. It was terrific.” Unfortunately Murray was eliminated in the ‘battle round’ but the show was a fantastic platform to showcase his talent, with 9.5 million viewers hearing him perform James Morrison’s You Give Me Something, and we were delighted when he performed at our gala Face of ESP event in September. Peterborough talent’s riding high at the moment with our very own Louis Smith’s victory in the last series of Strictly Come Dancing, and here’s hoping that Murray’s success can be repeated and there’ll be another local performer in the series. Meanwhile for Jessie J life’s as busy as ever – “I am working on a new album. I call it my ‘secret album’ but I am really excited about it all. Last year was really mental because I got to perform at the Jubilee celebrations and the Olympics. We will just have to see what this year brings.”

After a triumphant UK debut last year, where it regularly attracted average viewing figures of nine million, The Voice UK returns to BBC 1 for a second series. Following the success of Peterborough’s own Sarah Tempest Murray Hockridge last time, we at ESP will be eagerly watching to see if the 2013 series also feature talent from our city.

Movie Previews
IRON MAN 3 Yeah, I know it’s a bit of a cop out to plug this latest helping from the Marvel superhero canon – but it is undoubtedly going to be one of the biggest movies (if not THE biggest) of the summer. Now I’ve justified myself for my obvious ‘movie of the month’ choice (and championed this extension of The Avengers universe), I’ll at least throw you a bit of a curveball. Did you know that Iron Man 3 director Shane Black was actually the first member of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s team to be killed off in Predator?
All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.
Feel free to use that useless tid-bit of trivia in pubs around the Greater Peterborough area on me in the coming weeks.
Released: April 26 Cast: Robert Downey Jr, Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce Director: Shane Black
Now back to Robert Downey Jr and Tony Stark/Iron Man. He’s having a rough time unwinding after the Avengers Assemble events of New York, and his world is about to be turned upside-down – and reportedly quite literally destroyed – by formidable terrorist, The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). Oh, and Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle return – yes, War Machine is back – with ex-Neighbours star Guy Pearce debuting as evil scientist Aldrich Killian. Whether rumours of a link to the next Marvel franchise Guardians of the Galaxy get ironed out remains to be seen – but one thing’s for sure, there’s no stopping this superhero juggernaut…
G I JOE: RETALIATION
TRANCE
THE HOST
FINDING NEMO 3D
SNITCH
Released: March 27 The lacklustre original didn’t seem to win many critical admirers, but it took enough box-office wonga for Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis – who both seem to be in everything at the moment – to jump on board for the sequel. It was even delayed from last summer to cashin on a 3D conversion as they join Channing Tatum’s Duke to take on their mortal enemy COBRA, who’ve infiltrated the government.
Released: March 27 Talk of popping up a lot in movies, James McAvoy returns for his second thriller in three weeks – starring in director Danny Boyle’s latest attempt to add to his burgeoning CV of masterpieces. He stars as a fine art auctioneer, who teams up with a criminal gang to steal a painting worth millions of dollars – only to forget where he hid the painting after taking a blow to the head. Co-stars Rosario Dawson.
Released: March 29 The Twilight Saga scribe Stephanie Meyer didn’t stay out of the cinema limelight for long – with her latest novel providing another big-screen romance/adventure. When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by inhabiting human bodies and erasing their memories, Saoirse Ronan’s (The Lovely Bones) Melanie seems to hold the key to fighting this alien invader – and will risk everything to protect the ones she loves.
Released: March 29 After Monsters Inc received the 3D treatment in January, Nemo and co are the latest to get taken to another dimension with this Disney re-release. To be fair, it is arguably one of the most appropriate Pixar films to get the upgrade, with its spectacular sea-setting… and of course, Bruce the shark. It’s just astonishing it’s already been ten years since the little clownfish got lost first time round.
Released: April 5 I’ve already said he’s been in a lot of stuff, and his latest thriller keeps him up there as one of Hollywood’s most profitable stars. Workaholic Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson – who’ll also be defending the WWE title against John Cena at Wrestlemania on April 7 – goes undercover to help free his imprisoned son who was set up in a drug deal. Co-stars Susan Sarandon and Barry ‘Saving Private Ryan’ Pepper.
SPRING BREAKERS
SCARY MOVIE 5
OBLIVION
OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN
EVIL DEAD
Released: April 5 This crime drama could just be the must-see movie of the year for the teen girl market, as four of Hollywood’s starlets go rogue, as college girls who end up in jail after robbing a restaurant to fund their spring break vacation. James Franco goes from Oz to a drug and arms dealer, who bails Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine out – in return for further dirty work.
Released: April 12 It has surprisingly been seven years since the last p**s poor entry in the cash-in comedy franchise, with Anna Faris (bar a cameo) being replaced by two people with flailing movie careers of their own. Lindsay ‘jailbird’ Lohan and Charlie ‘bad boy’ Sheen are the film’s main protagonists, as they try and grasp anything Hollywood can throw at them – and will undoubtedly lose their dignity in the process.
Released: April 12 Tom Cruise tries to prove he’s still ‘got it’ outside of the Mission: Impossible franchise, with his latest blockbuster being given a presummer launch slot. In this sci-fi adventure (which co-stars Morgan Freeman) he stars as veteran soldier Jack Harper, who’s been assigned to extract Earth’s remaining resources after a court martial – but an unexpected traveller throws doubts over his mission.
Released: April 17 There’ve been some decent early reviews for this action thriller which sees Gerard Butler star as a disgraced former Presidential guard, who finds himself trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack. He then has to attempt to rescue the President (Aaron Eckhart) from his captors, in this movie from the director of Training Day. Oh, and this also costars Morgan Freeman too.
Released: April 19 The team behind the original Evil Dead – including Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell – are back to oversee this highly-anticipated remake of the 1981 cult horror. When five friends discover a book of the dead in a remote cabin, they unwittingly summon soul-possessing demons from the nearby woods, in this reportedly scary and gore-filled reimagining – which is also garnering promising early reviews.

GEARS OF WAR: JUDGMENT (360) Out now
Those of you worried that Damon Baird and Augustus Cole couldn’t carry the weight of this franchise on their shoulders should fear no more. Marcus and Dom have moved aside as Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly take the reigns and provide us with the boldest Gears outing yet, in this prequel that chronicles their fledging Kilo Squad years with some clever storytelling techniques.
#####
Throw in a superb ‘Declassify’ system, which adds fantastic new depth to the tried-and-test third-person cover-shooting mechanics – coupled with great new multiplayer modes – this really gives legs to a franchise which you thought was exhausted with Gears 3. Despite a generally formulaic villain in the form of General Karn, there’s a fresh and resurgent feel to tearing locusts in half.
It had the hype, but this reinvention of Lara Croft has definitely been worth the wait. With sensational gameplay, fantastic set-pieces and gorgeous graphics, you’ll revel in evolving a frightened shipwrecked young woman into an action-heroine for the next generation. You’ll search every nook-and-cranny of this beautifully rendered world as you build skills and upgrade weapons in the ultimate battle for survival, which – bar a couple of minor quirks and an only passable multiplayer mode – is nigh-on faultless.
#####
Even previous Tomb Raider-haters have expressed their surprise at the ingenuity oozing throughout this masterpiece – and put this instantly in the same league as Nathan Drake’s Uncharted.

Exclusives don't come much bigger than God of War – and Sony take us right back to Kratos' roots with Ascension. Serving as a prequel to the Playstation trilogy (ten years before the original, in fact), we find our favourite vengeful Greek gargantuan as the target of three demonic sisters called 'The Furies' – after he breaks a sacred blood oath with the Gods
#####
Although the single player campaign – which superbly shows off gorgeous graphics and a fresh combat system – isn't quite as epic as the awesome GOW 3, the all-new multiplayer mode is a welcome addition.

Movie Review
THE CROODS (U) Running Time: 1hr 35mins. Out now
When the cave they spend most of their lives dwelling in gets crushed, the knuckledragging family gets thrust out into a dangerously fantastical new world – changing their lives forever. They then encounter an imaginative firemaking nomad called Guy (Ryan Reynolds) – complete with his comedy monkey belt (the film’s major comic relief) – and the majority of the family want to follow his positive outlook, much to the chagrin of Grug, who simply wants to seek solace in another dingy cave.
It’s so hard to bring something new to the animated movie party – but Dreamworks’ just about do that with this latest outing. The Croods might ultimately lack the ingenuity that Pixar bring to the genre – but this wonderfully colourful adventure ticks most boxes. It stars the world’s first prehistoric family, mainly centred around Nicolas Cage as father and family protector Grug, and Spiderman’s Emma Stone as rebellious teen Eep.
To be honest, the first half an hour is a bit of a tedious bore, but when the characters start to spread their proverbial wings in this spectacular new world, it starts to have fun – if still in a fairly generic way. But despite the paint-by-numbers script – and a seen-it-all-before ending – The Croods succeeds with its likeable cast led by Cage and Stone, leaving this to undoubtedly evolve into a successful new family franchise.

HEALTH & VITALITY with Karen Devine
karen.devine@espmag.co.uk
In her bid to help you find more vitality, ESP’s Karen Devine talks meditation… S earching for some get up and go or improving our energy and overall wellbeing can come from a better night’s sleep, eating well, good hydration or a bit of exercise. All of these daily rituals sit firmly on the physical plane but as a human being we have many other ‘bodies’ such as our emotional, mental and spiritual bodies that need care and sometimes long overdue attention.
only for the yogis or the spiritual gurus, or used only to deepen the understanding of the sacred now finds its place in the 21st century which may be helpful for stress relief and/or relaxation. Many find they’re experiencing far more than this from greater connection to the world and the universal laws surrounding us and have a far greater understanding of themselves.
Today we’re surrounded by various stress factors that come at us on a daily basis, from toxins in our environment, relationships, work, travel, financial issues, family stress, illness etc.
When we look for total wellbeing meditation is one tool that may help us find that inner peace, or just any peace from the shackles of our overactive mind. When our mind and body is on overdrive it can zap our energy leaving us running on either our reserves or worse – running on empty, so each day becomes a struggle.
For aeons man has been able to adapt to stress of various kinds, but in today’s modern world we can suffer continued stress with no respite and many of us are on ‘fight or flight’ constantly so our bodies can’t recover from one source of stress before another is taken onboard. For some this ongoing bombardment can cost in terms of lost energy or productivity. Many years ago I took on a three year study of meditation, at that time anything above the physical realm seemed to be too far out there and rubbished as there wasn’t enough evidence – or it was just plain ‘woo woo’! What was once thought to be
Are you unhappy with your weight Tried all types of diets Dislike the way you look in the mirror Uncomfortable with your size Can’t shift that extra weight Clothes don’t fit No motivation
Why not give it a go? You may find a tape with a guided meditation much better for you to start with, or some relaxing music to help put you into a calmer state and help switch off the chattering mind.
You may even find it beneficial to work with a local group who teach you the steps week by week and give you the support you need through this new journey. Namaste, Karen Coming soon, new branding and a spanking new website (still to be called www.karendevine.co.uk )
Some find meditation too difficult as the mind wanders, or they get too many body sensations such as an itch or a twitch or an ache here and there. But once you bypass the ‘ego’ or the mind which likes to control us (and stops us finding that space) most of us can find that meditation may not only bring some much needed calm/tranquillity but improved energy. Many find it becomes a daily practice like brushing your teeth or sitting down for a meal.

Celebrity Brows
are within your reach!
BB’s Brow Bar is feeling good about making you look good girls and as they say – ‘Celebrity Brows are within your reach!’ as they celebrate three years of success! Where does the time go? It doesn’t seem long since BB’s set up in Queensgate and found a great space in the Westgate Arcade, in the last few years they’ve gone from strength to strength and expanded their great range of beauty and nail treatments. Although renowned for offering the fantastic seven step HD Brow treatment, BB’s also offers Shellac nails, Shellacs with foils and additives, Ancient Art Threading, Eyelash Extensions, Waxing, Manicures / Pedicures, Lash and Brow Tinting, Eyelash Perming and much more… They’ve seen their business grow with the loyalty of repeat custom – “We’d like to thank all of our fantastic customers, Queensgate and ESP Magazine for supporting us over these last three years,” says owner Cindy Bansal. “We appreciate your loyalty to us and we strive to provide you with the best service and eyebrow shaping at all times.” Cindy’s very proud of their progress over the last few years – “We’re not just a threading brow bar – we class ourselves to be the best eyebrow shapers, offering advice and aftercare to all our customers. All of our staff are highly qualified and hold valid certification for the treatments they offer.”

Now, if you’ve not caught onto the trend for HD (high definition) Brows and wonder how the celebrity brows look so amazing, let us explain. Your brows ‘frame your face’ so for a pristine defined look, seven individual techniques are put together to create the ultimate in ‘Brow Perfection’. This treatment isn't just shaping and tidying – HD Brows is eyebrow artistry! It’s a combination of tinting, waxing, tweezing, threading, cosmetics and more which produces fabulously defined eyebrow shapes. This amazing treatment lifts the eye and frames the face, it’s not a permanent procedure so you do need to pop back in every 3 – 6 weeks to keep this fantastic shape (depending on hair growth) but it’s a high-precision procedure that transforms even the most over-plucked brow into its perfect shape. It’s performed by highly trained and skilled HD Brows stylists and if you fancy giving it a go you will need a patch test 24hrs beforehand (even if you have had tinting done before).
To book any treatment just call 07901 770365 or email cindy@bbsbrowbar.com
Cindy adds – “Whoever you are and whatever the state of your eyebrows, HD Brows puts celebrity beauty within your reach.” You can find out more and see monthly offers on www.bbsbrowbar.com or follow BB’s Brow Bar on facebook and Twitter.

Miners is BaCk... at Beales
a new kind of naked with revlon
Well known and loved make-up brand, Miners, is now available in Beales department store, Peterborough... Yes you heard correct, right here in Peterborough!
Revlon’s new Nearly Naked make up range is truly fabulous and perfect for the forthcoming spring months when lightweight coverage is preferred.
Miners were this year’s official make-up suppliers for the stars of Dancing on Ice, including Lauren Goodyear and Samia Ghadie; both known for their colourful and glamorous looks. Miners cosmetics, which was established in 1937, have always been at the forefront of fashion with their trend setting colours and shades; perfect for feminine girls who like to keep on top of the latest looks.
This revolutionary foundation is packed full of natural ingredients including green tea, oatmeal and jojoba oil helping to soothe, heal and moisturise as well as giving you a flawless complexion. Formulated with the latest technology; weightless hollow silica pigments, this breakthrough Nearly Naked makeup balances skin and make up so they actually work together allowing the make up to mimic skin’s tone and texture – amazing! These clever little hollow silica microspheres enable light to scatter, diminishing the look of fine lines whilst letting light through so skin looks natural. Not only does this make-up leave you with a soft focus effect but it also contains SPF20 to protect skin from further skin damage. But the best part is that it really does feel like you’re not wearing any make-up! With 10 shades of foundation (£8.99) and five shades of pressed powder (£7.99) it really is a bare necessity for any makeup fan’s handbag so go on girls, dare to go (almost) bare with Revlon... it’s like skinny dipping for your skin!
CheCk your Moles Don’t be a fool this April and make sure you go and get your moles checked... yes that’s an order. After a personal experience I urge all of you out there who have any unusual looking or changing moles to see your GP sooner rather than later. Moles are generally harmless and can develop at any time. They come in a range of shapes, sizes and colours and are normally absolutely nothing to worry about unless they start to change or develop any unusual characteristics. Use the simple A B C D rules to detect any changes:Asymmetry – moles should be asymmetrical and shouldn’t differ from one side to the other. Border – edges of moles should not be blurred or jagged.
From show stopping eyeshadows and liquid liners to mouth-watering lip colours and glosses all in an array of trend conscious colours, there really is something for everybody. My personal favourite is their award winning Tin o’Tint – a tinted lip balm designed to tint and care. It’s available in four different shades Cherry, Watermelon, Pink Grapefruit and Vanilla and costs a mere £2.99! Store Director at Beales, David Butler told ESP – “We are excited to be launching Miners, offering our customers a high quality make-up brand with a great range of colour and choice” – and rightly so!! Make sure you celebrate the launch of these pursepleasing cosmetics at Beales Department Store, Park Road, Peterborough and you’ll get a free gift on all purchases over £15. So go on, head down to Beales today for all your must-have make-up needs.
Colour – keep an eye out for any changes in colour, darker spots or patchy shades Diameter – check to see if a mole gets bigger or if it’s larger than 6mm across. If you notice any of the above, don’t just ignore it, go and see your doctor. Chances are it’s nothing to be concerned about but wouldn’t you rather put your mind at ease than put it off? As well as the above also check that your moles aren’t itchy, crusty or bleed. The dermatologist at the hospital gave me a good piece of advice – the best way to keep an eye on your moles is to take photos of them every three months or so. That way you can check for any changes and take the photos to your doctor if necessary. And remember always wear sunscreen... sun can penetrate your skin through clouds AND glass!

providing service with a genuine smile. We were also delighted we could hear ourselves speak – so many restaurants are just plain noisy these days but the lowered ceiling and cosy surroundings meant we could chat without shouting.
FOOD REVIEW:
I’d certainly recommend the Arancini Di Riso (£4.95) – two crispy rice balls one with delicious pesto and the other a meat ragu served with pepolata red pepper sauce. Gorgeous!
CARLUCCIO’S Cumbergate, Peterborough. Tel: 01733 890752. Peterborough’s love affair with Italian dining has hotted up into a full blown romance with the arrival of Carluccio’s. Is it the fresh pasta, the lovely presentation of the food or the cosy ambience in a beautiful building? Like all attraction a mix of all no doubt but it certainly won our hearts – and my stomach’s approval! It’s refreshing to see a menu include so many different Italian dishes to try rather than just the regulars we often turn to, and no pizza. We’ll just have to return to sample some of the other delights. My veggie companion tried the Verdura Fritta (£3) a lovely light starter of tasty fresh vegetables in a very light and crispy batter presented in a little tub – a prefect appetiser.
This was followed by wonderful homemade ravioli with spinach and ricotta (£7.95) served the traditional way with butter and sage. The ravioli is made on site and is incredibly delicate so it lightly complements the flavours trapped inside. The Fettucce con Polpette (£8.95) again showed off their fresh egg pasta at its finest with homemade meatballs in a rich basil and tomato sauce.
There’s a gluten free menu available on request and some refreshing alternatives for vegetarians. There are also some great details that set Carluccio’s apart – they work directly with wine producers and get to know them personally, they only use mozzarella made from buffalo milk and they hand make their own focaccia bread and pasta. And of course it’s open for breakfast, lunch and dinner which creates a buzzing social atmosphere all day long. We can’t wait to return, especially once the summer comes and we make the most of the lovely seating area outside too… fingers crossed! Sharon McAllister
Irresistible desserts finished off our dining experience and really topped things off in style with our eyes lighting up at the Meringa con Panna (£4.95) and the Coppa di Gelato All’Amarena (£5.25) which were both just fabulous. The wine list should have something to please everybody – we particularly enjoyed the Sicanni Ross (£13.95) which is exclusive to Carluccio’s. It was nice to note that the staff were friendly and happy Barolo, Malbec and Valpolicella through to Cuvee Dom Perignon and a variety of beers. The restaurant’s also famed for its Bengal Naga Chilli Chicken dish which is flavoured with specially imported naga chillies, and only a touch of it is used to achieve the heat – just slightly hotter than a Madras. Not only does this dish look fiery, it tastes fiery too!

Angel Spice is a listed building in a stunning location and well positioned with good parking so it’s no wonder it’s also popular with large groups and for parties. With their fabulous buffets it’s a popular venue for charity fundraisers like a recent event held in aid of the Papworth Trust and a charity race night in aid of the RAF Wings Appeal on Thursday March 28. They can cater for over 100 diners and will even organise some music!
Get ready to celebrate Easter and May Day in style at Angel Spice! As ever this wonderful Indian restaurant in Stilton will be offering some great dining over the Easter break and will be supporting the annual Stilton Cheese Rolling on Bank Holiday Monday May 6 so why not take a trip to this great event and book yourself in for some wonderful food? Of course Angel Spice is famous for its very own Stilton dish – The Stilton Paneer is a curry made with Stilton cheese, spinach, cream and a touch of spice. It’s a mild curry dish which is similar to that of a Korma and is ideal for anyone who can’t handle too much spice.

The restaurant’s built up a great reputation over the last seven years with owner Mr. Bashir (Bash) and Jaks, who has 20 years experience in the industry, aiming to make sure they offer the very best service and quality. Angel Spice boasts plenty of repeat custom and as well as having strong support from villagers they attract many diners from further afield. Perhaps that’s due to their diverse menu and the fact they’ll cater for any special requirements and cook up something fresh to your specifications. There’s a comprehensive menu and an impressive wine list with everything from

FOOD REVIEW:
GOLDEN PHEASANT We took a trip over to The Golden Pheasant in Etton, a lovely country pub not far from the city centre, to sample its real ales and tasty homemade dishes. There are various menus with a wide choice plus several specials on offer so there should easily be something to cater for all tastes no matter when you drop by. We tried the chicken skewers to start (£4.95) which were chunky and tasty, not too spicy with a peanut and sweet chilli dip on the side – a very nice light starter. This was followed by fish and chips (£8.95) and a cottage pie (£7.95). Both were well presented and came with home made chips – which were excellent and definitely to be recommended. The beer batter on the fish was light and crunchy and not too greasy while the delicious cottage pie was served in a neat little dish with crisp fresh veg on the side.
Photos: Chris Brudenell
The portions are a good size and not too overwhelming, but we tried to leave a little room for our dessert! Again we were spoilt for choice with mouth watering sticky toffee pudding, cherry pie or fruit crumble all sounding tempting, but the homemade profiteroles proved just right and were light and lovely. You’ll see the words ‘fresh’ and ‘homemade’ frequently on the menu and virtually everything is made by chef Sabrina using
local produce where possible. It’s always good to know your food’s not pre-packed from the freezer and you really can taste the difference. The menus are regularly refreshed but with a few favourite staples such as sausage and mash, the steaks and mixed grills, pies and lasagne to name a few. You can make a trip to the Golden Pheasant a real family treat too as there’s a great play area and a special menu of child friendly dishes at parent friendly prices. The popular Sunday lunches are also great value offering the perfect roast. There are options to dine in the bar by the roaring log fire or in the separate restaurant
area and the permanent marquee is a great addition for functions, proving particularly popular for weddings. For real ale lovers you’ll always find four available at the bar and these change frequently. You can try out a few at their May Bank Holiday Beer Festival on May 4 – 6 when there’ll be live music too. There are bands every Saturday – check our ESP Gig Guide or visit www.thegoldenpheasant.net The Golden Pheasant, 1 Main Road, Etton, Peterborough, PE6 7DA. Tel: 01733 252387.

STAMFORD: BRITAIN'S BEST PLACE TO LIVE!
DR FEELGOOD COME TO STAMFORD
Excellent news fellow Stamfordians (it'll catch on) The Sunday Times recently published a list of the top 101 places to live in Britain, and guess what... Stamford only went and ruddy topped the pile! That's quite a compliment isn't it? Think of anywhere else in the UK, now look down on that place and laugh! Laugh a hearty laugh, then stop and think about that place’s feelings, then apologise and be graceful in victory.
Canvey Island in Essex. An unlikely birth place for one of the finest British R&B bands ever created. From these humble beginnings Dr Feelgood have grown into a national institution and will be coming to the Stamford Corn Exchange on Sunday April 28.
Judged on a variety of aspects, the paper awarded our town the accolade because of its healthy mix of ancient and modern architecture, the preserved beauty of the streets judged pretty enough for a host of costume dramas, inns such as the historic George Hotel with its AngloSaxon roots and the market stalls which sell local produce side by side with the high street stores.
Having enjoyed global success with their number one album Stupidity as well a string of hit singles including Roxette, Back in the Night, She Does it Right, Going Back Home and See You Later Alligator (which gave the group their first gold record) they’re back touring once again!
All this is true! Stamford has all those things, but the factor that clinched the title away from our close competitors was YOU! Yes the local community was a key factor to the decision with the town being described as 'the Cotswolds without the snobs and tourists'. So pat yourselves on the back guys, your down to earth nature and easygoingness did the job.
The current line up features Kevin Morris on drums and Phil Mitchell on bass (not that Phil Mitchell) both who have been members for 29 years! They're joined by Steve Walwyn on guitar and vocalist Robert Kane formerly of The Animals.
Under the banner of Graham Gouldman's Heart Full of Songs, Gouldman and his 10cc bandmates Rick Fenn, Mick Wilson and Mike Stevens will give a series of stand-alone, 90-minute acoustic performances in intimate settings.
The band continues to tour extensively throughout the world due to popular demand and are a dead cert to put on one hell of a show! Tickets are £16 and available from the box office on 01780 766455 or by visiting www.stamfordcorn-exchange.com. For more info on the show visit www.drfeelgood.org.
The show features 10cc classics such as I'm Not In Love and Dreadlock Holiday; pre-10cc Gouldman hits such as Bus Stop and Look Through Any Window (written for The Hollies), Heart Full of Soul and For Your Love (The Yardbirds) and No Milk Today (Herman's Hermits); as well as songs from his highly acclaimed new solo album Love And Work, and some surprises.
Alex Jones
Tickets are £22.50. Box office: 01780 766455.
Local council leader Linda Neal has welcomed the decision saying – “We have always known it's a fabulous place to live, but this confirms it on a national stage and it looks like another of our best kept secrets is out.” So how will you be celebrating? A quiet drink down The Green Man? A trip to Burghley House? Or maybe raving it up in Central! Whatever you do take comfort in the knowledge that you’re doing it in the best town in Britain. Alex Jones
10cc'S GRAHAM GOULDMAN AND FRIENDS The Corn Exchange certainly has some big names this month and 10cc’s Graham Gouldman still has plenty of fans who should be keen to see him play on Friday April 26. Anyone who's attended a 10cc concert in recent years is likely to have seen band co-founder Graham Gouldman's opening acoustic set, featuring some of the hits he wrote for other artistes.
FAUSTUS AT THE STAMFORD ARTS CENTRE Folk band Faustus are bringing their brand of traditional English musicianship to the Stamford Arts Centre on Wednesday April 24. Nominated for a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award in 2009, Faustus have been described as 'A folk essential' by The Sunday Times, creating frill-free folk music performed superbly and tastefully. Having received an award in 2007 from the English Folk Dance and Song Society, Faustus are three of the leading lights in their field. With mountains of experience between them, be prepared to witness a masterclass in technical ability as the trio perform music rooted deeply in English tradition. Tickets are £12.50 and available from the box office on 01780 763203 or by visiting www.stamfordartscentre.com. Alex Jones

Go Go Go by putting your pedal to the metal
Go Go Go Intensive is based in Peterborough and offers learner drivers a fast and cost effective way to pass both the driving theory test and practical driving test for a standard fee of £795. According to the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) the average driver needs 45 professional lessons and a further 20 lessons from family members, friends or a professional instructor. The average cost for professional tuition is £20 - £22 per hour which means that the average learner driver is paying up to £1200 to pass their practical driving test. Whilst there is nothing wrong with weekly lessons it could take up to 60 weeks for a student to pass their driving test. Go Go Go Intensive offer a structured course syllabus at their training centre and remove the kerbside instruction into a classroom environment. The benefit of this is that all the time spent in the car is spent on driving with little or no kerbside instruction. The syllabus was developed by a Defence Driving Examiner and is based on the Military and Police system who recognise that it is the most efficient and cost effective way of obtaining a driving licence. This is because there are no gaps in learning where a student can forget what they did during a lesson a week before. The courses run Monday to Friday and start at 9am. The first hour is spent in the classroom with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) who starts training and preparing students for their theory test. Students are collected by their Driving Instructor at 10am where they have a two hour intensive driving lesson, a rest break for half an hour, followed by a further two hour intensive driving lesson. Students return to the classroom at 2.30pm for further classroom training and the course finishes at 5pm each day. At the start of the week the classroom training focuses on getting students to pass their theory and hazard perception tests which are pre booked to be taken on the Thursday or Friday of the week. By the middle of the week the classroom training focuses on all the elements that are normally taught at the kerbside during weekly lessons. By the end of the week students should have passed their theory test and will have covered all aspects of normal driving. If the Instructor has signed off the student as test ready then they can book a short notice test where Go Go Go Intensive can dramatically reduce the practical test waiting time. The company is so confident with its teaching methods that should a student fail the theory test, or practical driving test if they have been signed off as test ready then any corrective lessons required of each will be provided free until a test pass is achieved. The company also has unique links with the Institute of Advanced Motorists and gives free Affiliate membership, for 12 months, to all students that pass their driving test. The institute teaches the Police system called ‘Roadcraft’ and when applied you cannot have a collision that is your fault. Given the government’s statistic that one in five new drivers crash within six months of passing their driving test the system is an invaluable tool and dramatically reduces insurance premiums. After a month off to recover from a holiday on the west coast of Africa and its gastrointestinal delights, I’m back to have a chat with some of the area’s finest and most talented musicians and catch up with their lives and future plans.
Andy Slater
Gav King... Gav King has been a pal of mine for the last 12 years or so and his long black dreadlocked hair is his trademark look that many know.
When at 16 he got the chance to tour Britain with English Dogs on the Misfits tour he jumped at it – “I wasn’t playing I was doing the merchandise and helping out but it got me out on the road at an early age,” – not many people can say that they were out on tour with an iconic band like the Misfits at 16! It stood Gav well as he was approached by another touring band Speed Urchin with who he toured the UK for two years and released a couple of EP’s. “I was 17, I just had that get out and do it attitude,” he tells me. Another twist of fortune saw him hired by another touring band, Road Rage and this time the tour was the States – “It was only a few dates but I got to play CBGB’s. I was 21 touring the States!” Around 2001 he was approached by Gizz

Butt to join Janus Stark and again toured the UK and this time Germany – “If you remember Andy you brought guitars and drums out in your VW camper!” I remember it well, especially dumping the whole kit and caboodle on the concourse at Frankfurt Hahn airport. I’d forgotten my roadie days! As the band slowly progressed from power punk to a more metal edge the band kind of dissolved and Gizz and Gav formed The More I See in 2002 with Alex and Lee Churchill. “We did an EP with well known metal producer Andy Sneap and signed to the same German label, SPV as Motorhead.” The band toured and did more recording work and a classy video, The Unholy Feast, in the same local church where actor Heath Ledger had filmed prior to his demise. Gav stayed with the band until 2009 but had already been playing with Fields of the Nephilim after a shout from Gizz Butt
to the band. The ‘Gothfathers’ as the Fields are revered were at the forefront of the Goth scene and still tour big gigs and festivals. “We did M’era Luna Festival in Germany, we closed the Sunday night, 23,000 people with the
The Adam Ant gig was a strange one apparently – “I went to audition for bass with him,” says Gav, “but when he found out I was a guitarist really, he asked me to help out for five gigs so I did, it was fun while it lasted!” He still
“We did M’era Luna Festival in Germany, we closed the Sunday night, 23,000 people with the sun going down, it was great!!” sun going down, it was great!!” Gav’s first gig with them was the London Astoria which was closed soon after – “We were one of the last bands to play there, we also did Brixton Academy – that was mad!” The gigs and festivals still come in for the Fields and as I type this up Gav is heading off to Helsinki with them.
finds time to play with anarchist punk band Conflict now and then with Spike T Smith the genius drummer from the Boro, and it’s the pair of them that have formed Destroy DC. “I am really excited about it. We have a new EP out and it’s really good stuff, kind of dub roots progressive punk.” It certainly has a punk reggae feel to it and must be pretty good live. They have Rebellion lined up

After badgering his parents for a guitar for Christmas when he was 13 – “I got it a couple of months early, it was a Marlin Sidewinder, good guitar as well,” – he started jamming with Tom Savage (Jigsaw Studios). “Tom liked Nirvana,” says Gav – “and their stuff is fairly easy to play so we played that and Metallica.” The band was Kaiowas and toured a bit doing school gigs and village fetes as lads in a mid teens band do, and played in a Battle of the Bands competition at The Leeds Town and Country Club where he would return in 2012 with a much larger band.

From helping out Adam Ant to playing with the Gothfathers of, well, Goth – Gav’s career to date has been varied and played out at quite a speed.
Destroy DC
and a gig in Dublin booked but there is one they’d like to play closer to home – “We would love to do The Willow Festival, it’s our home town.” There you go Mark Ringer, give the boys a shout… Newcomer’s stage?! April is Community Pubs Month Come and get your free Crown Club Loyalty Card – Free drinks, Free food and Exclusive Special Events.
Gav has crammed a lot of rock ‘n’ roll into his life and he’s still in his early thirties, the arrival of is son Levi and the love of Mary his girl, and now wife, through his entire music career completes the guy. He is and always has been a softly spoken guy and his calm temperament has adapted to a family life that he balances well with holding down a job and a music career. The thing is, now it’s their time and not the music business, yes he’ll do gigs and play but not to the detriment of his family. That sir, is a very honourable stance.

Check out the line up – Reverend and the Makers, Asian Dub Foundation, The Levellers, Stiff Little Fingers, New Model Army, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, Seth Lakeman, The Farm and The Quireboys… that’s just for starters. There are three stages of all sorts of stuff going on from dance to skiffle to folk to indie to banjo madness. There’s also a comedy tent, real ales, street (or field) performers and all your usual traders offering weird and wonderful foods and crafts. Two bands which are worth a mention basically because I think they are superb are The Peatbog Faeries and local heroes Ezio. Both playing and both getting my vote as a must see that weekend. The festival is in the beautiful National Trust site of Keddleston Hall on May 17 – 19 and tickets are really really good value at £79… now think of buying a ticket for a one off gig at around £60 and this then becomes mega value! It’s one of the BEST of the year, great crowds, really friendly, the loos are good and they don’t mind too much if you wander in with a few cans of your favourite tipple either… see you there? www.beardedtheory.co.uk

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…
In each month’s ESP, we pride ourselves that we keep you up to date with what’s happening in the area and try to cover a broad spectrum of entertainment and events. Music wise, we have a monthly Gig Guide in the mag and updated online on www.espmag.co.uk (tell us yours by emailing gigs@espmag.co.uk) and my column features local musicians and spotlights forthcoming events that are coming up in the Peterborough area. Folk music is very popular locally, and it’s nice to come across a special internet source that brings a detailed guide to that particular genre of music. The Peterborough & South Lincs Folk Diary is a non-commercial website for the benefit of people who want to find ‘folk’ and ‘open mic’ music easily, and for the people who run the venues. In other words it brings the two parties close together. A look at the site www.peterboroughfolkdiary.org.uk shows a lot of forthcoming events in April and May, and it covers not just the Peterborough area but bordering counties. If you’re a folk or open mic fan and you’ve not discovered it, I suggest you give it a try.
Dave Colton, Retrolux
I’ve had an email through from Dave Colton the bassist/singer with Retrolux, telling me that the band can’t perform all their usual gigs in April, and that their booking’s being fulfilled by Stealer, a local Free and Bad Company tribute band. Stealer will appear as cover at The Ostrich in North Street on Saturday April 6, but Retrolux should still be on at The Swiss Cottage in Woodston on Friday April 19 fingers crossed.
If you like the music of The Eagles and haven’t yet seen the Illegal Eagles, I suggest you try and get yourself down to The Cresset when the band’s Heaven Heats Up tour hits Peterborough on Thursday April 25.
featuring all The Eagles classics like hotel California, Take it to the Limit, Life in the Fast Lane and Desperado. But they also feature solo work from Glenn Frey and Joe Walsh and Don Henley.
I also learn on Facebook that Blackout are back. After a break of over two years, the band who play Classic Rock covers are currently in rehearsals and are yet to reveal their playing set but it’s bound to include some of their Black Sabbath and Foo Fighters material.
I have seen The Illegal Eagles twice and, for me, they are the best Eagles tribute band in the UK. Five quality musicians whose voices and instruments blend together beautifully in the unique way that the original’s did. They have built up a huge following for their live performances
The tour which once again visits the Cresset before extensive dates around the UK and Europe, plans to visit The Middle East and Far East before the end of the year.
It all kicks off on Saturday May 4 at Knobworth, which is the annual Bank Holiday charity event being held at The Angel Inn at Yarwell. Then their first full gig is at The Seven Wives, St Ives the following Saturday.
Well worth the visit to the Cresset – book now on 01733 265705.
Welcome back out Blackout!
April sees an appearance by Echoes of Floyd UK at the Sir Harry Smith Community College in Whittlesey. The show takes place on Saturday April 20 and the fixture’s becoming an annual event as they played the venue last year as a celebration of their formation in 2011. They’re a ten piece Pink Floyd tribute band replicating the sound and producing a spectacular light and laser show. Many of the band and crew members are based in the Peterborough, Stamford and Deepings area. With a tour of the UK and Europe planned later this

year, Echoes of Floyd UK is a show styled on the original Floyd! Their shows span almost three decades of Pink Floyd’s history, from their very first album all the way through to The Division Bell, including some of the best known classics, such as Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Money and Comfortably Numb. You can find out more info on www.echoesoffloyd.co.uk and tickets can be booked by telephoning Sir Harry Smith Community College weekdays on 01733 703991.
The Falcon Hotel in Whittlesey is playing host to a charity gig on Saturday April 27, being put on by Joe Bridges in aid of The Epilepsy Society. The evening, which will include some indie, punk and metal starts at 7pm and features seven bands. They are (in no particular order): Roses of Humanity, Return to Rome, October Again, That Night Forests Grew, Villain, Amber Hill
and Divided We Fall. Joe told ESP that he felt there was not much of a local music scene in Whittlesey so he started the project with three aims – he wanted to raise money for charity with music, give local bands more gigs whilst providing a good night out at a cheap price. There’s another gig planned in May. ESP will keep you informed.
