VINYL REVIVAL @ PETERBOROUGH RECORD STORE

Photo: Emma Bothamley

If you like to celebrate your vinyl and feel an album or EP just puts CD’s and downloads in the shade get ready to support Record Store Day this month at our very own Peterborough record store.

Mars Plectrum Records – the UK's smallest independent vinyl record shop – is run by Matt Hawton a dedicated fan of vinyl who likes it so much he created his own store in his garden at 387 Fulbridge Road.

Matt told ESP Record Store Day on Saturday April 16 is an annual event to promote independent ‘bricks and mortar’ record shops – “The idea is to get people out and into record shops, rather than buying online. There are some 550+ exclusive titles that you won’t be able to buy anywhere else. These include records by David Bowie, Nirvana, Slaves, Public Service Broadcasting, Metallica, Florence & the Machine. There are Star Wars and Alan Partridge picture discs! Literally something for everyone.” The internet has had a huge impact on retail and independent record shops in particular. Record Store Day has not just done wonders to support the vinyl revival, but the shops that sell it. It’s

supported by huge stars – this year’s RSD ambassadors are Metallica, last year it was Dave Grohl. Matt first took part last year and is expecting it to be another popular day. “To give you an idea as to how sought after these exclusive records are, last year the queues started at around 4am with the shop opening at 8am. Customers know that the numbers are strictly limited and not available anywhere else. They’re worth getting out of bed for! “Back in the day, record shops used to be a meeting place. Somewhere to hang out with your mates and hear the latest music. RSD is looking to bring that back. There’s a superb atmosphere in the queue and the shop on the day. We can’t wait!”

Schools Challenge is designed to get some friendly rivalry going between local schools in this year’s event on Sunday October 9.

ESP’s resident running man Darren Grigas has signed up once again and his kids will be joining the fun run. They’ll be among more than 5,000 half marathon entrants and over 1,000 fun runners who now join in. The Great Eastern was resurrected in 2006 by Perkins and race organisers Peterborough City Council. Over the last decade Perkins has continued to support the run which has become a highlight in the city’s sporting calendar and it’s fantastic to see this local event go from strength to strength.

There are some great prizes up for grabs for the best fundraisers too and the school that raises the most money for the charity will win the Anna’s Hope Schools Challenge Cup. This year the entrance fee for 16 year olds and under is £5. To enter the race simply visit www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk and complete the online entry form including the name of your school. To get your Anna’s Hope Schools Challenge Pack including a Challenge Letter to challenge another school please contact admin@annashope.co.uk or ring 01780 740492.

Young and old can take part but if the half marathon’s just pushing it too much for you, why not opt for the 5k Anna’s Hope Fun Run?

SONGS, CARS AND GREAT FOOD @ THE ROYAL OAK The Royal Oak in Duddington not only serves up delicious food (we’ve tried it!) but also some rather tasty entertainment too. We recently enjoyed a cracking night with well known top local singer Nicole Lawrence – this girl is just so talented and is always worth a listen. Nicole makes regular appearances at their special dinner evenings and your next opportunity to catch her is on Friday April 22 but don’t hang about as these nights regularly sell out! For car lovers they also have their annual TVR Meet on Saturday April 9 with upwards of 70 TVRs meeting between 12 noon and 2pm with some impressive vehicles on show. If you’re planning to make the most of the May Bank Holiday they’re open all day over the weekend and Monday so why not head to nearby Fineshade or Wakerley woods for a walk or bike ride and drop by the Oak for lunch and refreshments.

Anyone can join in and it’s a great way to get the family involved but now the Stamford based children’s charity is inviting schools to challenge each other to raise funds. The Anna’s Hope Gavin Miller, film reviewer for ESP Magazine and www.espmag.co.uk "During my seven years writing ESP's Screen Scene my overriding highlight was an invitation to London's Claridge's Hotel where I got to meet and interview the cast of Avengers Assemble (which appeared in the May

2012 edition), which included Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and director Joss Whedon. A quite exceptional fanboy experience."

SWEET TOOTH HEAVEN!

BE PART OF MAKING A LEGENDARY STATUE

WAGA NEEDS TO GET A WIGGLE ON First we had Tamu on Broadway and now we have Tamu's bigger brother in Cowgate. Can the next Tamu be a drivethrough in Fletton please? I've been to dessert restaurants in America and didn't think the concept would take off in our beloved Peterborough. But after two years on Broadway the original Tamu has been so popular that it needed to open an additional outlet. It's good to be proven wrong! One privilege of being Man About Town meant I was able to get a VIP taste of what the new Tamu has to offer before the arrival of other media and invited dignitaries on opening night. As this Tamu is a dessert lounge, it packs in more than 70 customers on its smart leather-look booth seating. There are also individual tables for larger groups, which will accommodate around 20 people. The decor is bright and airy and its corner plot location makes it all the more inviting. The menu’s bigger than what's on offer on Broadway and this means more flavours of gelato, toppings galore for waffles, crêpes and pancakes and enough sundaes to sample once a month on a Sunday for the rest of the year. And there's even more sugar on top at this Tamu, which is offering diners the chance to win two free desserts every month just by feeding back their visitor experience via www.tamu.co.uk. The icing on the cake is a new gelato lab in the basement, which is used to create flavours of ice-cream unique to Tamu. So, I'll be slowly making my way through the menu in the coming months. I've discovered that Tamu means 'sweet' in Swahili but my sweet tooth's going to be more impressed with the next menu item I'm going to devour – the Smores pancake. Read this and salivate: A combination of warm and gooey marshmallow, milk chocolate sauce, crushed butter biscuits and chocolate curls, served with whipped cream and a jug of maple syrup. It's official, wagamama is coming to Peterborough but my sources tell me we have to wait until the autumn! The Long Causeway unit (next to Starbucks) has been undergoing light improvement works since March but for some reason it could take up to another five months for it to open for business. PLEASE HURRY, I CAN'T WAIT THAT LONG! I've been a fan of wagamama's fresh Japanese-inspired cuisine for years and if it means getting it open sooner I'll take some annual leave and help the fitters to install a kitchen, a few woks and some old Stanground College PE benches to sit on. When it does finally open expect to enjoy a variety of new and classic dishes from bowls of fragrant soup filled with noodles, meat or vegetables to curries, noodle dishes, salads and juices – all made fresh to order.

FAIRY GOOD QUIZ RESULT Here I am pictured with Anna's Hope founder Carole Hughes after our team finished a very respectable joint fourth in Global's (Heart FM) Make Some Noise Oxford v Cambridge Quiz Night.

The Posh legend that is Chris Turner passed away a year ago and now fans have an opportunity to ensure his legacy is never forgotten. The CT5 Club (The Chris Turner Statue Fund Committee) has been formed and founding members are giving fans the opportunity to make a regular contribution towards the statue fund. The statue will become a major monument and attraction, not only to Peterborough United but to the city as a whole. And by becoming a member of the CT5 Club, you'll be playing a big part towards its construction. Membership is £10 per month (individual or family) and you get: • A Chris Turner tribute DVD • Named as a major contributor (must be a member for six continuous months) in the statue diary, which will be held in the club museum and available for public view • A certificate endorsed by the club in recognition of your contribution • Entry into a monthly prize draw • Exclusive members only events

Carole's clan didn't perform too well last year, so this time I (plus a few old timers) came to the rescue along with my 'pop music' significant other to ensure a confident finish among 20 other teams.

Big shouts to Rob Persani for being a confident team leader, Stewart Francis who swallowed an atlas and to Mary Vincent for demonstrating excellent allround general knowledge capability.

The evening raised more than £3k and this means extra support and rehabilitation for children and young people with brain tumours.

I should also mention the city's Visitor Information Centre team who didn't finish last despite some questionable choices in team membership...

>> Dave - sure you've had enough pizza? >> Zach and Axel - welcome to the world! >> Gary - time for a scoot run? >> Graham - next Gables? I'll try and come this time! >> Adam - thanks for being my camera boy >> Debs - are you lining up Ducati for me?

• Opportunities to enjoy other Posh incentives • Before and after entry to the Executive Suite on the day of unveiling, along with a limited edition numbered photo of the statue unveiling (available only to those that have made every payment up to the unveiling date) For more information and to sign up, visit www.thechristurnerstatue.co.uk

EU SERIOUS?

There are obviously a lot of serious questions being asked about potentially leaving the European Union if the nation votes to exit in June's referendum. But perhaps the most important question was posted on the BBC's website. “If we leave the EU does it mean we would be barred from the Eurovision Song Contest?” Sophie, Peterborough.

The response: Sophie from Peterborough, who asks the question, need not worry. We have consulted Alasdair Rendall, president of the UK Eurovision Fan Club, who says: "No, we would not be barred. All participating countries must be a member of the European Broadcasting Union. The EBU – which is totally independent of the EU – includes countries both inside and

outside of the EU, and also includes countries such as Israel that are outside of Europe. Indeed the UK started participating in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1957, 16 years before joining the then EEC." It's comforting to know that of all the questions put to the BBC's news website, someone from Peterborough has their priorities right. Sophie: thanks for making such a valid contribution to our city's stance on Europe.

Home to Roost For the past few years it might’ve been all about doing a 60 Minute Makeover as many of us were stuck in the ‘improve don’t move’ rut, but forget the interior revamp, scatter cushions and a lick of paint – now it’s more Location, Location, Location as new homes are being built at a fast pace.

“The team behind the work are tradesmen the company’s used for 25 years so they’re experienced, reliable and produce a better home.” If you’ve been thinking about your dream home, maybe now’s the time to make it a reality. How does 2 - 3 bedrooms, two bathrooms a fully integrated kitchen, a utility area, rear garden, patio and parking sound for starters? You can choose and personalise the interior and upgrade if you want to so here’s your chance to create your very own Grand Design! Members of the Ashwood Homes team

N

ow the market’s turned it’s a seller’s market so at last you can make the move you’ve been dreaming of, or with the Help To Buy scheme you can at last get your foot on the housing ladder. Local housing developers Ashwood Homes are a previously well known family owned building company now returning to the property market. They’re currently all systems go on The Roostings, a development of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom homes in Crowland. Chairman Ashley King is excited about their latest project – “Ashwood Homes has a past and well deserved reputation as a leading regional house builder. “We have a tremendous opportunity to deliver this again in this newly launched company. Some of the old team have rejoined us and are looking forward to growing the company for many years to come.” Construction manager Doug Bills says it’s the high standards that sets them apart. “We’re building homes to be proud of – I wouldn’t do it otherwise. These are well finished, good solid properties that are second to none.

16

www.espmag.co.uk

Sales manager Nathan Marshall has worked in the industry for many years and is now the man in the know if you’re looking to buy one of these new homes. “The quality of the build and well thought out sites make these homes that work for the people that will live in them, rather than just for what developers might want. Ashwood Homes aren’t only proving popular with first or second time buyers but several Crowland residents have also chosen to reserve properties. “It’s in a fantastic location for Peterborough and those who commute with the new A16 bypass, so you can enjoy the benefits of a countryside location in a brand new home.” Youngsters from the Southview Primary School came up with the name The Roostings for the new estate which looks perfect for families with its open green space at the centre, couples or if you just want your independence and your own place. There’s a great mix of 50 traditional looking homes with a two bedroom property starting from £154,995 or a three bedroom from £169,995.

The marketing suite at Crowland So whether you’re nest building, need a change of scenery or have been itching to get a move on this brand new development in Crowland has it all. The show home launches with a barbecue and entertainment at an open weekend at the end of June, so pop down and take a look. IL S RE A B BSTOE R A S OF TH EXOTIC – A TA IN PETERBOROUGH

I love to see the launch of new eateries and it gives me great pleasure to feature the fantastic Sabor Brasil – a new food experience on Broadway in Peterborough.

ELEGANT DINING AT ORTON HALL For those looking to add some glamour into their life, and let’s face it, we all need it now and then, may I suggest a visit to the elegant, woodpanelled Huntly Restaurant at Best Western Plus at Orton Hall Hotel & Spa in Orton Longueville. This stunning restaurant is set in 20 acres of beautiful parkland but is just minutes from the city centre and their ethos is focused around fine dining and a relaxed atmosphere. The team of award winning chefs has worked hard to gain an AA Rosette and the Huntly Restaurant and the Sunday lunch menu are tailored to perfectly showcase the seasonal produce available, sourced from local suppliers where possible. The menu’s full of British style with a contemporary twist making the Huntly Restaurant the perfect complement to the elegance of the hotel. After all that lovely food, there’s a welcoming lounge area where you can relax and soak up the atmosphere. The owner, Paulo Batista, greeted me with a warm welcome and explained – “Sabor Brasil is all about serving up fresh and delicious food in a bright and fun environment.” The restaurant feels vibrant with its cool décor and lively music and since opening in December, Paolo says its popularity continues to grow – “My aim was to bring people together through their love of food and our menu reflects this with a traditional rodizio grill, sharer platters and tapas.” I started my meal with some delicious warm bread, olives and fish pate, followed by prawns in garlic sauce finished off with one of Sabor Brasil’s famous Portuguese grill platters – a hugely satisfying combination of beef and pork steaks, ribs, piri piri chicken and rice, fries and a seasoned salad and all just £19 for two people to share. This is all on the lunchtime menu which

runs from 12.30 – 5.30pm Monday to Sunday. The tapas menu runs from 12.30 – 11pm, Monday to Sunday with an extensive choice of dishes including prego no pao (beef steak on bread with

fries), chourico assado (flamed chorizo) and tabua de queijos (a mix of cheeses). You can also enjoy some great flavours from their rodizio grill and watch as the waiters slice and prepare the meat at your table – a favourite in Brazil and the flavours are just mouth-watering too. Paulo is passionate about the food he serves and genuinely wants his guests to walk away with a smile on their faces. Sabor Brasil is much more than a restaurant with a cocktail bar open until 2am at the weekends, salsa nights and a seafood festival in May, so go along and add some sunshine to your life! HAPPY 200th ISSUE! 1998

2016

When we published the very first issue of ESP Magazine back in December 1998 with Robbie Williams adorning our front cover, who knew we would see our 200th issue in print? Ever since then we’ve grown and evolved along with the city and spread our message far and wide about all the good things greater Peterborough has to offer. We’ve shouted about local talent, supported our city’s events, applauded anyone who’s achieved success in their field and caught up with the many celebrities who’ve visited over the years. Despite being a free monthly publication we’ve always worked as hard as if it were a paid for title, and researched and produced editorial features and distributed news read by around 63,000 readers each month thanks to the support of local advertisers, and we thank you. Thousands of readers grab a copy of ESP each month and it’s always been your magazine – it’s simply all about sharing the great things about this area and encouraging everyone of any age who wants to, to get out and enjoy it. It’s easy to moan about where you live, but there’s so much good stuff going on and ESP has always been there to mark the changes and make sure you don’t miss out. We have more comedy clubs than ever, a cracking local live music scene, we’ve finally seen the dining out quarter become established bringing a more varied night time offer and more big names and events are heading our way. Things are looking up in the city and ESP is here to reflect that. All of our team are local and over the years we’ve always tried to give dozens of contributors the chance to get published and get involved. We have a great team, many of whom have been with ESP for many years now who are all dedicated to bringing you the best of what Peterborough has to offer, getting out there and supporting the scene. Other publications may have come and gone over the years but we’re proud to still be here and be the premier leisure and lifestyle magazine representing Peterborough and all that’s great about the area. Get involved by following us on Twitter and facebook and check our website where there’s always even more news every month. Thanks to all of our fabulous team, our loyal readers and to the many local businesses who’ve supported us – here’s to the next 100 issues! NEW INDOOR TRAMPOLINE PARK SET TO BOUNCE INTO THE CITY! with the most operating experience,” says Gary. “Trampolining in a well-managed environment, is plenty of fun and improves overall fitness levels and general health.

Time to ‘Bounce’ with excitement as a new indoor trampoline park is set to open in Peterborough! Rebound Leisure Group Limited (RLG) are behind Bounce, the new project which will bring us a massive trampoline playground for kids and adults for fun and fitness. The park consists of a main arena with wall-to-wall interconnected trampolines, as well as a dodgeball court, a world-standard foam pit, slam dunk hoops, a gladiator pit, fitness challenge zone, gymnastics runways, and a specialist softplay zone for children 2 to 5 years old. Bounce also has an arcade, Bounce

Central café, and birthday party areas, including dedicated VIP party rooms. Bounce has created the revolutionary Reboot Fitness program, a bootcamp style exercise class incorporating drills only possible on trampolines. It’s designed for everyone, plus it provides a great location for school, team, club and company outings, including the option of private hire. It’ll be located at 1 Wedgwood Way, Bretton (at the roundabout between the ice skating rink and bowling centre) and promises to be a new

and exciting entertainment option for all ages and fantastic for families. There’s plenty of room for everyone at Bounce which can accommodate over 150 people per hour!

“From the outset, RLG has worked to be a global leader for indoor trampoline park safety and operations. RLG is a member of the Safety Committee of the International Association of Indoor Trampoline Parks and contributes to international best practices for trampoline park design, construction and management of safe trampoline parks. Additionally, RLG trampoline parks are fully compliant with ASTM and TUV standards.”

Gary Knill the entrepreneur behind the scheme, who also manages Bounce Indoor Trampoline Parks and Jump Boxx Indoor Trampoline Parks elsewhere in the UK, says they focus on safety first, knowing fun will follow!

Even more good news – it’ll bring more than 50 jobs to the area when it opens. Olympic athlete Louis Smith will be opening Bounce next month, so keep an eye out for the official launch date in ESP if you'd like to see him trial their gymnastic runway.

Cast: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Tom Holland Directors: The Russo Brothers

Release dates were correct at time of going to press but could be subject to change.

It’s Captain America (Chris Evans), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) versus Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Vision (Paul Bettany) and newbie Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) – in a summer blockbuster that is already being billed as Avengers 2.5.

After the mass destruction of New York City, Sokovia and other cities across the world, political powers now want the Avengers to be made accountable for their actions – which causes a major rift between former allies Steve Rogers (Evans), who is against the idea, and Tony Stark (Downey Jr), who is for it.

catastrophic enough, a wild card in the form of a teenage Spider-man (Tom Holland) is thrown into the mix, and surviving bad guy from Captain America’s last standalone outing, Crossbones (Frank Grillo), is out for revenge. And there’s the added problem of Daniel Bruhl’s Baron Zemo too.

Ubisoft does a truly commendable job by bringing massively multiplayer online role-playing shooter The Divison so impressively to the masses. It does have the same repetition problems as the equally impressive sci-fier Destiny, but just like that game did, it at least deserves immense credit for raising the bar. And even though it will divide some, for the most part this Tom Clancy-inspired adventure has much to be proud of.

FAR CRY: PRIMAL It doesn’t quite have the same ‘complete’ feel of Far Cry 3 and 4 – with villains, supporting characters and side missions not quite being in the #### same league – but with a massive open-world sandbox gameplay set in the world of sabretooth tigers, mammoths and crocodiles, there’s still an extremely rewarding experience to be had.

READY TO TAKE THE TOUR? The Tour of Cambridgeshire just got bigger with a new Tour of Colour 5k run and party added to what’s become a huge festival weekend. It’s all being staged at Peterborough Arena on Friday June 3 ahead of the cycling weekend. You’ll follow a route and get colour blasted in various colour zones while you run, walk, skip or dance around the Tour of Colour 5k.

This massive cycling weekend proved a huge success when it was launched last year and we were proud to see such a fantastic event come to Peterborough. Thousands of cyclists set off from Peterborough Arena on a closed road circuit and we’d never seen anything quite like it. Now this year things have got even better with the addition of a 5k run and after party with a difference. The new Tour of Colour is something totally different and we can’t wait!

That’s all then followed by the most amazing after party where a huge sound system, pumping music and amazing effects will have you dancing and enjoying a drink with your friends until around 11pm. Get signed up soon as places are limited. Don’t worry, all colour is 100% safe, edible, biodegradable, and beautifully bright. This is an excellent opportunity to be a big kid, be wild and completely crazy for a day; another tick on your bucket list! Then of course it’s the cycling weekend when the Tour of Cambridgeshire gets underway with the Chrono on Saturday June 4

and continues with the Gran Fondo on Sunday June 5. The Tour of Cambridgeshire is unlike any other mass participation event in the UK. Uniquely the event caters for everyone whether you’re an elite racer, an athletic sports rider, a challenge rider, or just out to test yourself in a more leisurely way on your bike, on closed roads, around the stunning Cambridgeshire countryside. ToC is the UK’s only Amateur World Championship qualifier event as well

as being the most perfect event for riders wanting to raise money for the charity that is close to their heart. There’s a shorter route available for any rider not wishing to take part in the full 80.2 miles. ToC is a cycling festival with a major cycling EXPO, family entertainment, dance workshops, as well as youth and disability cycling and running events all on site at Peterborough Arena. Bring on the summer! Early bird tickets for the Tour of Colour 5k are £20 (normal price £25). www.tourofcolour.com Entries spaces are nearly full for the Tour of Cambridgeshire so don’t miss out on yours – enter now on www.tourofcambridgeshire.com.

DRIVING UP STANDARDS

by Pep Cipriano

Proudly sponsored by

pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk "It may be a 5.0 V8 with 500bhp but when I picked it up I thought it was too quiet, so I added a custom built four-inch straight-through exhaust system and a drag racing cold air intake to add a bit more power. The car now sounds amazing and to put this into perspective, when I start it up at my dad's business Hollis and Brown Autotech in Deeping, you can hear it in Glinton! "The other thing that makes my Mustang special is it's the third right-hand drive model built, which is one of the 500 that were designated to Champions League club members. It feels like a bit of a celebrity and people are always taking photos of it inside and out, including under the bonnet where I've swapped everything that was stock to either brushed aluminium or carbon fibre to give it that extra wow factor." Liam's wallet has taken a hit with all the extras he's added to the Mustang but it's been worth every penny. Not only does he own a rare model of this legendary car, but his custom additions make it one of a kind. So, does owning this beast have its downsides?

LIAM'S US MUSCLE

AND UK BRAWN

You can't be considered a proper petrol head if you haven't got a soft spot for American muscle cars and arguably the daddy of muscle – the Ford Mustang. The Mustang's iconic status has its roots in a Hollywood film starring the king of cool, Steve McQueen. In Bullitt McQueen's Mustang was in an epic car chase with another of America's finest – the mighty Dodge Charger and screen car porn was born. Today's Mustang still strikes a bullish pose and its lines pay homage to its original and beautifully sculptured shape. And today's Mustang driver is inspired by nostalgia and is in awe of this legendary thoroughbred.

Photos: Chris Brudenell

Liam Hollis is quite possibly the country's youngest Mustang owner, which would explain why he's probably the happiest 22 year-old I've ever met. He's had the keys to his 2015 Mustang since December and added to it earlier this year with a lovely 1988 2.8 V6 XR4x4 Ford Sierra Turbo Technics. Now we're talking.

34

I met up with Liam and his Ford beauties and as much as I appreciate the history and heritage of the Mustang, it was the Sierra that filled me with memories of yesteryear. Liam told me: "The Sierra is my dream car. Growing up my dad had a 4x4 Sierra and I've wanted one ever since. It's my daily driver and the Mustang is for weekends. The Sierra may be www.espmag.co.uk

nearly 30 years old but it still holds its own in the performance stakes and is making 220bhp to all four wheels. "It's fun to drive and has bags of character because of its age. It'll backfire from time to time, the body roll is horrific and it's got that typical old Ford smell of fuel inside the cabin but I still love it." The Sierra needs a bit of TLC to bring it back to tiptop condition and the Mustang, despite being only four months old, has had a bit of tinkering done to it too.

"Only that I'm averaging seven miles to the gallon! I'm becoming a bit obsessive too, so my fiancé Amy and friends tell me. In car parks I always find the spot that's empty, so no-one can open their car door onto mine and I clean both cars every weekend. When it rains I always dry them off before they go in the garage, I guess that's a bit too much!" But at least at 22 years of age, Liam's got his two dream cars, right? Wrong. "Well, yes I own two of my dream cars but the ultimate car I'd love is a 1969 Dodge Charger in black." The boy's obsessed and I can't blame him. The Charger's in my dream garage too... along with a Chevy Camaro, Chevy Impala, Ford Galaxie, Buick Riviera, Pontiac GTO... the list goes on. Liam's a member of Collide Car Club (search on Facebook). It's a proper petrol head community and anyone with a passion for cars should check it out. What’s you Pride and Joy? SCOOTER FANS HIT THE ROAD FOR GOOD CAUSES ESP’s Mikey Clarke caught up with local scooter fans for the annual Peterborough Egg Run and ride out…

Other eggs were taken to The Manor Respite Home & Activities Centre, which promotes the welfare of children with both learning and physical disabilities and enhances their transition to adulthood. The eggs were shared out between the children using the centre.

On Saturday March 12, many Peterborough residents saw something you don’t see every day. And many locals who didn’t see it, heard it! What am I referring to? The Peterborough Lambretta & Vespa Scooter Club’s annual Easter Egg Run. In March 1997, a few local scooterists got together to donate Easter Eggs to numerous worthy causes across the city. This has grown in popularity and size year on year. 2016 saw 190 scooters leaving the Cherry Tree Pub on Oundle Road to deliver approximately 1500 - 2000 Easter Eggs in a mass ride out. Many of these were delivered to

Another venue to benefit from the 2016 Egg Run was Peterborough City Hospital, Amazon Ward – which provides specialist treatments for children up to the age of 16. It also cares for children with long term illnesses. According to Leigh Moore (one of the event organisers), the eggs were – and always are – very well received. Leigh also wanted to thank everyone for their support and donations. The PLVSC members meet regularly and whilst there are some amazing customised machines and some real enthusiasts, everyone’s welcome who just likes the scooter scene. Look up The Peterborough Lambretta & Vespa Scooter Club for updates on events such as this and more. Check out this month’s Paparazzi pages for more pics from the day. www.espmag.co.uk

Callus Peel sOlD  BY BaRKeRs

Sometimes it’s easy to forget to ‘treat your feet’ in your daily or even weekly beauty regime. That’s why I couldn’t resist popping down to Barkers beauty suppliers to try out a Callus Peel.

Healthy Peterborough has been launched, a brand new website to help us all prevent and tackle those common health issues. It will help all of us to manage our diet, and kick those niggling habits. Dr Liz Robin, Director of Public Health for Peterborough City Council, said: "We understand that it can be confusing for people to know what a healthy diet looks like or the best way to exercise, as there is so much conflicting information out there. "We want to give local people trustworthy and medically proven advice on how to stay healthier for longer. By making simple changes, such as eating less fat or doing 30 minutes of brisk walking five times a week, people can make a big difference to their own health and increase their overall life expectancy."

It took about half an hour, and simply involved having wet flannels with a magical substance placed on my feet, and after waiting a few minutes all the hard skin on the bottom of my feet came off easily. They felt baby soft afterwards! Barkers supply a number of local beauty houses with the Callus Peel, including our friends at Serenity Loves – so you can give it a go too.

Check it out here: www.healthypeterborough.org.uk along with the Healthy Peterborough Facebook page and Twitter @HealthyPboro to get some great tips for a healthier lifestyle that will make you feel fab.

sisleÿa The lovely Michaela at the Sisleya Counter in John Lewis Peterborough treated me to a fantastic facial with their lovely product range, and now I'm hooked. This is a premium brand for those of us happy to spend our hard earned pennies on the absolute best creams for our skin. So what makes their new Sisleÿa l'Intégral Anti-Age so special? Well, it’s the first 3D face cream out there, tackling aging caused by our genetics, the environment and our behaviours (too much drinking on a Saturday night for example!). The rosemary and lavender smell also relaxes you which in turn relaxes your skin and face, ironing away those winkles. After three weeks of using it, my skin is plumper, those wrinkle lines are

BEING

STILL FEELING STRESSED? MAYBE IT’S TIME TO JUST BE ‘STILL’…

important thing is to make an intention that at some point in your day you are willing to connect with your essence, your divinity or your true self (whatever you refer to it as). Intentions hold creative powers. Connecting to our breathing or being conscious of our breathing can really help find this place, when we put our attention only onto our breathing, we can gradually crowd out the chattering mind. Some people find using a word as a mantra such as love, peace or calm for example over and over again can help quieten the chattering mind. Or using an affirmation as a mantra such as ‘I am peace’ or ‘I let go’, ‘I surrender’ for example, said over and over can also help with calming the mind and the outer world for a short time. You can visualise an object such as a candle, or a rose if easier, just keeping the focus on the object and allow the thoughts to float by. Think of your inner essence as the clear blue sky, from time to time a few clouds (clouds in this analogy are your thoughts) will float by, we know that the blue sky is still there despite the passing clouds.

W

hen we look around nature and the animal kingdom, we see a cycle of rest and activity, and yet as humans we have become so hardwired into a faster pace to keep up. We’re now so over-productive we’re losing the art of stillness and the ability to put the ‘be’ back into human ‘be-ings’, many of

reason to make time for the stillness. This is the place we find our connection to our inner being and our source of true, authentic power. There are many gifts to be found in the stillness and how you find yours can vary to how others find theirs. We don’t have to take off to the

other side of the world to an ashram in India to find ourselves (but enjoyable if you wanted to), it can be found sitting in your car, by the river fishing, out in the garden or in the woods, in a space in your home, even in the loo if that’s the only place you will find a moment of peace! The

This can be called meditative silence which like anything is an art that improves with practice, in the beginning it’s more like ‘quiet thinking time’ as thoughts seem to speed up which is pretty normal, it’s the ‘ego’ mind not wanting you to connect with the great power within. Setting the intention of this quiet time of nonthinking (or lesser thinking) may help you feel calmer, more peaceful and/or put you into a joyful state which can affect the rest of our outer life in a positive way. You may also find your creativity increases as your inner essence is felt which guides you to a much greater sense of self. You no longer look for outer validation or answers from the outside as you begin to trust the wisdom from within. Mikey Clarke

There are some great events and top names coming our way this year and ESP’s Mikey Clarke grabbed a word with comedian Bill Bailey, who’s performing at the Peterborough Arena this summer… it’s quoted back to you a lot?” I asked. “Precisely!”

Photos: Andy Hollingworth

In his previous shows I’ve seen, Bill often talks about disasters that have happened during family holidays. Does he secretly hope things will go wrong to give him material? “I’d love for funny things to happen during our travels but what actually ends up happening most of the time are things I wouldn’t wish upon anyone.

T

he gap between how we imagine our lives to be and how they really are is the subject of Bill Bailey’s latest show Limboland. The comedy genius is bringing it to the Peterborough Arena on Saturday June 4 – and I can’t wait. I’ve been to see many of his shows in the past and am just blown away by how multi-talented this man is. I recently had the pleasure of speaking to Bill (yes, we’re on first name terms!) to talk about the tour and what us Peterborians can expect. “I should be nicely warmed up by the time I reach Peterborough,” he said. “Limboland has been going on for about 2 years now. The show is pretty well travelled. I’ve been to Australia, New Zealand, the Far East, and it’s been all around the UK once already. This is the second leg of the UK run with a West End stint in-between.” I wondered if during those two years, the show had evolved throughout the months. He told me – “Very much so. Throughout the 2 years l have got bored of some jokes and replaced them with others. It’s probably an entirely different show from when I first started the tour. Also, the material might change a little depending on where I am. The material will certainly change from time to time but the core elements of my shows are there. There is of course a lot of music and a lot of anecdotal stuff. It’s the most personal show I’ve done in a while.” It was good to hear that the music remains on the agenda. It wouldn’t be the same without a song or two. I asked if he could reveal any of the tracks

we’ll be hearing. “I’ll be performing my own 1930s Berlin cabaret version of Happy Birthday. It’s a rather annoying and tedious song so I felt it was due an upgrade. I’ve also written a song for Adele, but I’m not sure if she’ll want it. It’s called ‘You left me, but I’m not going to go on about it’.”

“For example, I wanted to take the whole family to see the Northern Lights in Norway. I thought it was going to be a magical experience – us shushing through the snow whilst gazing at the Northern Lights overhead. What happened was very different. It was instead a dogsled white knuckle ride in the dark, being pulled by baying hounds in minus 22 temperatures. It was really scary for all of us. There were people screaming and for a short while we even lost my father-in-law, who fell off the back – and we all thought he was a goner. I had a horrible sense of guilt as it was all my idea.”

I asked Bill where his passion for music came from. “It’s always been there,” he said. “As a tiny toddler I would play notes on the piano. When I was 3 or 4 I would start to play actual tunes on the piano, and I’ve loved doing it ever since. “I taught myself how to play the guitar, amongst other things. Any instrument I could pick up, I would try and get a tune out of it. “When I first started out in comedy I would only have brief moments on the stage and would have to be set up very quickly so I’d take a guitar with me – something that was light and practical. Many years later when I got my first stint at the Edinburgh Festival, I realised I was going to be in one place for three weeks, so for the first time I brought a piano along. It was at that moment I had an Epiphany. I realised I could play all kinds of things on the stage in all kinds of styles. A door had opened to a style of musical comedy I hadn’t considered before. And it’s evolved from there.” This time Bill says he won’t be including the Oud in his list of bizarre instruments though. “I’ve retired the Oud until further notice,” he laughed. For those that have seen Bill Bailey’s show Dandelion Mind, you’ve probably guessed why the comedian has locked away that particular instrument. “I imagine

And finally, I’d always been curious with comedians as to whether they constantly felt the pressure to be funny all the time, such as at dinner parties or speaking to a waiter. “People certainly have an expectation of you. It’s an occupational hazard so you have to expect that. Sometimes people will look at you like they’re waiting for you to tell a joke – and at times like that, it’s good to have a quip up your sleeve.” To book tickets for his summer gig at Peterborough Arena visit www.peterborougharena.com/ events/bill-bailey-limboland-june-2016/ Read Mikey’s full interview with Bill on www.espmag.co.uk

ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

At the start of this season, we made a conscious decision at the football club to try and make the match day experience more inclusive and decided to build on what we started to achieve last year with our young flag bearers playing a huge part in the pre-match build-up. Tony Broughton has worked tirelessly contacting these junior football clubs and looks after them all on a match day and already has a reserve list for the 2016 - 2017 campaign, which shows the level of interest.

I

n fact, since the start of the campaign, we’ve been able to work with local football teams from across the region to allow over 750 youngsters aged under the age of 16 to play a pivotal role in the entertainment and activity on the pitch prior to kick-off.

In recent weeks, we’ve also introduced a penalty shoot-out package for the half-time interval because of the sheer number of local junior clubs that want to get involved, which has taken our interaction levels to over 1,000 kids in just a few months.

Those kids always enjoy themselves. We’re always receiving feedback from their coaches or parents expressing what a memorable day it was, being so close to the first team and getting to see behind the scenes at the ABAX Stadium. That is always so pleasing to hear.

Everyone behind the scenes is working extremely hard to increase the attendances at the football club and by giving these youngsters a day they will never forget, we hope that we can tempt them back on a regular basis.

Chief Executive Bob Symns said: “What we’re trying to do here, which is very important for us moving forward, is to get to a place where we are happy as a football club with our fan engagement levels. Turning up to a football game on a Saturday is wonderful, but we want to give them more than just the 90 minutes that occur on the pitch. “Having all these events, trying to introduce new ideas and initiatives is vitally important and we’ve worked hard to put together these packages to encourage youngsters and in turn their parents, to the ABAX Stadium. “The fans are the lifeblood of the club, always have been and always will be and the more we can do to entertain them and interact with them, the better the benefits will be. It’s great to see so many junior football teams joining forces with us

and long may that continue,” Symns said. To find out more about the packages we offer, please visit www.theposh.com or email media@theposh.com.

RUSSELL JAMES, HOUSE PROUD AND SOME FINE TUNES by Anna Ruggiero

“To have built something like this isn’t a one-man show, they believe in me and the event and I’ll be forever thankful for their support.

“Music is everything; it's the one thing that connects us all. Imagine a world without it…” Now as I may have mentioned once or twice, or possibly even 200 times (see what I did there?), this issue is extra special as it marks the 200th time the ESP crew have lovingly put the mag together for you lot to enjoy. I thought it was only right that for my Nightlife interview, I featured a DJ who’s brought something extra special to Peterborough. Ladies, gentlemen and everyone else, let me introduce to you Russell James who’s managed to make

Sunday nights fun again with the launch of House Proud – bringing house music outside and onto the terrace at The Solstice on Sundays.

House Proud into a Sunday event and the opening of the SolGarden terrace was perfect timing – you could say the rest is history.”

I caught up with Russell to chat music, music and more music.

For those that haven’t been to House Proud, you can expect to be welcomed as part of a music community and there’s something very magical about starting the event in the sun and finishing under the stars.

Russell says: “I originally launched House Proud at Mission in Leeds nine years ago and decided to bring it back home for Peterborough heads to enjoy after noticing that most people seemed to be heading to the train station every weekend in search of better times! “After spending so much time in Leeds, a university city with a buzzing music scene, you get used to a Sunday being accepted as a night that people want to go out and let their hair down, or carry on from the night before in some cases. “I decided that I wanted to turn

House music fans are treated to some of the finest tunes known to man and this is down to Russell and his resident DJs’ wealth of music knowledge and genuine passion for DJing. Joining Russell to make these events epic is Drew Tilney, Martin Smith and Sean Johnson who have their own loyal set of followers who make up part of the crowd on the dance floor. Russell continues – “The

“I’ve made some of my best friends through the love of music and have been introduced to some great people.” I’m fully behind anyone that has a goal in mind and goes for it and I genuinely believe that Russell and his team have made House Proud a fantastic event in the city which has paved the way for other events – you can never have too many good tunes playing from the bars in any city centre. His passion for music shines through in the way he talks and ultimately in his sets. “Music genuinely means the world to me and has always been a way for me to express myself.” So make sure you keep bank holiday Sundays free and make your way to the SolGarden at the Solstice to dance the afternoon, evening, night and early morning away! Queue jump tickets are usually released on the Thursday before each event, you can pick them up from the Solstice and to get connected with Russell and House Proud online, visit: russelljamesmusic.com twitter @russelljamesdj twitter @houseprouduk Facebook houseproudmusicuk

BLUESWATER ARE BACK!

Edinburgh-based rhythm and blues band, The Blueswater, will be bringing their award-winning show ‘Blues!’ to the Stamford Arts Centre on April 29.

One of the few winners of the ‘Mervyn Stutter Spirit of the Edinburgh Fringe’ award in 2012, the show plays through a 90-year history of blues music in just 90 minutes. It features an 11-piece band who take the audience on a journey ranging from early blues songs from the Mississippi Delta to the modern stylings of Jack White.

Scotland-based musicians who perform regularly across the United Kingdom and internationally. They’ve successfully visited the venue before and frontman and show producer Felipe Schrieberg told ESP – “We have filled the venue with past performances and we're hoping to do this for a third time.”

‘Blues!’ enjoyed its world premiere at the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe and is the creation of the members of The Blueswater, a group of young,

So how did all these people get together? “It’s a common interest in the

same genre of music really,” Felipe explained. “We all love listening to and playing the blues, and we constantly discover together, the amazing variety in what seems to be such simple music. Through its time, musicians would take the simple structure of blues music, and mould it to their own styles that reflected their cultural surroundings. Whether the big band bombast of the jazz age, the overdriven guitar sounds of the British blues movement, or the funk music of black urban musicians in the 1970s.” ‘Blues!’ pays homage to those styles and showmen who influenced that genre, which in turn has left its indelible stamp on modern music. Seats are limited so I’d get your ticket soon on 01780 763203.

THE PIANO MAN IS ON THE WAY! Following on from his highly-acclaimed reunion concerts in the USA with Billy Joel’s original touring band, Elio Pace visits the Key Theatre as part of his UK tour celebrating the phenomenal music of Billy Joel. The extremely talented Elio is very well known locally and in the show he features the extensive list of hits that Billy Joel has written and performed over his career – Uptown Girl, Just The Way You Are and My Life as well as fan favourites such as Tell Her About It, Start the Fire and Piano Man. Supported by his sixpiece band, Elio will bring the The Billy Joel Songbook

to life. The impresario Bill Kenwright, who recently brought all those quality West End shows to The Broadway has featured Elio in the past and he’s quoted as saying – “The minute I first set eyes on Elio – as the leader of the band in one of my musicals – I knew that he was special. In a world of wannabes, nearlies, and tryers – he was the real thing!” Mr Kenwright is rarely wrong, and I don’t think you will be either if you book your ticket for Friday April 8 on 01733 207239.

RUBY AND THE STONES @ THE KEY Two acts that I’ve seen live before are booked to appear in a busy month at the Key Theatre.

I’ve caught the Counterfeit Stones a few times (Broadway and Beer Festival) and they always entertain brilliantly with their musicianship and their satirical tribute act to the World’s Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Band. Lead singer, Nick Dagger does a brilliant impersonation of Mick and was good entertainment in character for listeners to my radio interviews with him on Lite FM. Catch them live on Friday April 22. A week before that, Ruby Turner appears at the Key on Sunday April 17. For many years Ruby’s been regarded as having one of the greatest voices the UK’s ever produced. Ruby can breathe life and meaning into

a song whether it’s a passionate soaring ballad or a soulful up-tempo groove. Her career to date has been sensational with major tours, film, TV and theatre appearances. She had a string of chart hits including the best ever version of ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ and many accolades comparing her voice to Aretha Franklin and to Janis Joplin. That is undoubtedly why for the last few years she is the anchor in the vocal department of the Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Orchestra. The seal of approval from Jools for musicianship is like a product receiving the Royal Crest. Tickets for either show are on 01733 207239 or www.vivacity-peterborough.com

CHRIS IS KING OF NEW YORK It was great to hear that a former music student from Peterborough Regional College was recently invited to perform at the unique Lead Belly Fest in New York. Chris King Robinson has steadily established a huge reputation in the music world. In 2013 his popularity began to soar and after racking up the views on YouTube he quickly established himself as the #1 Most Followed Blues Guitarist Worldwide on Twitter, a status he then gained again in 2015 amassing 620,000 followers in the process. His popularity was so, that his first ever single went to No.1 on the iTunes and Amazon Blues charts, just one day after its release. Chris’ appearance at the tribute concert was in the world renowned Carnegie Hall in New York City. This was the site of Lead Belly's legendary last performance in 1949 and was a sell out event with over 3000 people in the audience and acts such as five-time Grammy Award-winner Buddy Guy, Eric Burdon of The Animals, Marky Ramone, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Edgar Winter, Walter Trout and Tom Paley, who played with Lead Belly in 1949. Chris said – "It was an unbelievable experience. I was introduced on stage by Marky Ramone, and next to my dressing room was Buddy Guy’s dressing room! I got to hang out with him, he was really cool, sat and chatted with me about old stories of him and Jimi Hendrix back when they were in the UK. I also got to hang out with Walter Trout who, along with Buddy, is one of my big heroes. It was a real dream come true!” Chris is in demand in Europe and the USA so we may have to wait a while for another chance to see one of Peterborough’s very own.
