Stop press... HARRI HOPES FOR A HIT Local model Harriadnie Beau has just released her very first single, a cover of Dolly Parton’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ and looks set for big things. The Whittlesey teenager’s a graduate of the world famous Sylvia Young’s School of Acting and Drama and has already done fashion shoots and modelling for Tesco, Next and Dolcis as well as local businesses and ESP! She’s won countless singing competitions already, and her new single looks like it’ll help her become a star. “I’m so excited with my new single,” says Harri, “I’d really like to thank everybody involved in the production.” Although she’s just 16 years-old Harri is already making her mark and getting spotted so we wish her the very best of luck – you go girl! You can buy a copy of the single from her website www.harriadniebeau.com.
years-old with some prior gigging experience; someone who’s committed and who has a sense of humour. You’ll need the ability to play and create tight, solid and original bass lines, be able to do backing vocals (but that’s not essential). As long as you have a strong image, stage presence and personality you could fit the bill. Repsond’s built up a strong reputation over the last two years and have worked in some top studios. Interested? Take a look at myspace.com/respondofficial or www.respondofficial.com, or call Shaun on 07966 529937.
QUEENSGATE SMILES Smile… and you could snap up £500 in Queensgate Shopping Centre vouchers! The centre’s running a community portrait project called Queensgate Smiles from August 710 when the vouchers will be up for grabs. There’ll be a mini studio set up where you can have your portrait picture taken for free – these will then be exhibited throughout the centre and also online where you’ll be able to download them for a minimum donation of just £1. All money raised goes to Sue Ryder Care. Take a look at www.queensgatesmiles.co.uk for all the details.
TV’S HAMFATTER @ CITY ROOTS If you’re a fan of BBC2’s Dragon’s Den, then you may have recently seen Cambridgeshire band Hamfatter secure £75,000 towards their dreams of becoming rockstars from Peter Jones – the really scary one! With four of the Dragons vying for a stake in their future, Hamfatter are definitely destined for big things, so don’t miss your chance to catch them right here in Peterborough at the city council’s City Roots festival (see P. 62). Taking place at the Embankment on August 2 and 3 it has a diverse selection of bands set to perform. Tickets are available from The Key Theatre on 01733 552439 or from www.city roots.co.uk, or you can always get in on the day.
If you fancy yourself as a bit arty, but reckon there’s nothing like that going on in Peterborough, then head over to the Gallery at the Great Northern Hotel and prepare to be proved wrong! They’re putting on a show throughout August that aims to showcase as many local artists as possible – it’s probably the first time so many have been brought together in one place! Curator Jessica Story told ESP – “We aim to support artists working in the greater Peterborough area as there’s a lot of talent around, but with a lack of outlets selling local work, many have been forced to exhibit elsewhere, and it’s a definite loss to our city’s culture!”

MARRIOTT TURNS TWENTY The Marriott Hotel, Lynchwood recently celebrated its 20th anniversary with a delicious fourcourse dinner attended by the Mayor of Peterborough, Cllr Pat Nash. The guests also had the chance to see some gorgeous cars thanks to the local Rolls Royce enthusiasts club, who marked the hotel’s opening back in 1988. Even though the Marriott has just benefited from the chain’s recent £120m refurbishment programme, they’ve not forgotten their past with two members of staff, Ana Upsall and Sandra Giddings, receiving champagne and flowers as a tribute to their long service.

working in various salons around the city, but when they were offered first refusal on the premises of Eden Hair Studio, they jumped at the chance! Emilio told ESP - “We’ve always strongly believed that a haircut isn’t just about leaving the salon looking good – it’s about making sure that the customer has a hairstyle that suits their life, that they feel great with and that they can look after themselves!” Eden Hair Studio’s has been very busy from day one, so call 01733 361371 to book. Most of the work on display is for sale too, so if you’re just looking for something to brighten up your living room or see yourself as the next Saatchi, it’s definitely worth a visit.

The guys at Lite FM are running a brand new competition every Monday this month on Gary Ball’s drive time show, called ‘Tossing Toppings.’ Basically, it sees news editor Carlo Fiorentino go back to his Italian roots, although perhaps not in the way you’d expect. He’s been over to Pizza Express, thrown a variety of pizzas at a wall and recorded the rather squelchy sounds they made as they hit. All you’ve got to do is guess what topping was on the pizza! Programme controller Gregg Nunney told ESP – “At Lite FM we all love pizza – that’s a fact – and it’s a fun game with a great prize!” So for your chance to win a delicious free meal, make

THE HUMAN HOUNDS HIT THE TRACK
We just love mad events and Human Greyhound Racing is definitely pretty bonkers. ESP is supporting the event which raises cash for Sue Ryder Care Thorpe Hall Hospice. Face of ESP Kerry Bates was joined by her predecessor Susan Saunders on the launch night in July and helped give the human hounds a little encouragement before they took to the track. Organiser Emma Long told ESP – “The guys form BNI who were in the first heat were great sports and have supported us with corporate and individual sponsorship. They have set a high standard for others to follow! The night was a whole lot of fun and I’m looking forward to watching the rest of the races.” It was a great night at the Peterborough Greyhound Stadium and the heats continue this month on August 5 & 6, they’re the last race of the night and you can bet on the boys just like the dogs. We’ll be back for the Grand Final on August 8, so see you there with a few quid to spend… and hopefully to win!

RANDALL ROOTZ MK2
After the huge success of the Randall Rootz festival last year, it’s back again on August 15,16 and 17. Organised in the memory of Mark Randall, a local musician and promoter who sadly lost his battle with cancer aged 34, the whole weekend is to raise money for Thorpe Hall Hospice. It all kicks off on August 15 at The Brewery Tap, Westgate with Legend, who’ve been hailed as one of the best Bob Marley Tribute acts in the UK. Supporting them will be Groove as well as DJ Wolfman Jack. The second day of the festival, August 16, shifts outside to the huge beer garden at Charters, Town Bridge. Music comes from The Dead Rabbits, a Pogues tribute, Richard Hall Band who play indie, folk and pop, Bhangra Drums, Sam Beer playing acoustic folk, summery flamenco and jazz from Tres Cojones, indie rockers Strawbear, Charters blues regular Derrin Nauendorf and Rebellation playing Ska and Reggae. As well as many festival stalls and an eco-art project, the entertainment heads right into the evening with local rockabilly legends The Houndogs playing inside Charters with Psych-o-bombs, who specialise in raw 60’s garage. August 17 includes an open mic session and the headliner is local hero, Ezio! Also set to appear on Sunday are such names as Matt Zilch and Miss Lisa Ambrose. DANZFUSION’S SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER! ESP REVIEW
VIBRANT YOUNG
ESP’s Pep Cipriano ventures to the theatre for a night of dance action… I’m hardly John Travolta when it comes to slipping my dancing shoes on but I do like to watch a good show. That’s why I accepted an invitation to check out Danzfusion’s ‘Encore!’ at The Key Theatre recently – not my usual Saturday night shenanigans but it turned out to be well worth the change of scenery. Founded two years ago by Jenna Tudor, Danzfusion is made up of approximately 120 city dancers of all ages and competence levels who worked for nearly a year in piecing the show together. The cast showcased their talent to routines (even one to The A-Team theme tune!) from well-known musicals such as Chorus Line, Fosse, Moulin Rouge and Flashdance plus to current chart toppers including Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and Usher. A stylish routine to Eye of the Tiger was my favourite – Apollo Creed and Rocky Balboa would’ve approved. Well-done guys – any chance of teaching me some moves for a cameo role next time...? THE EXTRA FACTOR
Ready to see some popular faces in a whole new light? This September check out ‘The eXtra Factor’ a comedy musical that takes a step back and presents reality TV in an ironic and comical manner. With a starfilled cast including Antony Costa (from hit boy band Blue) and Kevin Kennedy (better known as Curly from Corrie) the characters want to find their fame, fortune and stardom. Every night will end differently with the overall winner chosen by the audience of that evening. As well as the highly comedic writing the show features some of the biggest hits from the past three decades including ‘Angels’ by Robbie Williams and ‘I’m So Excited’ by Donna Summer. It runs from September 2 - 6 and ticket prices vary over the five days call. Key Theatre box office: 01733 552439. Amy Davidson

BEER WE GO!
Peterborough Beer Festival, the biggest party in town, returns for its 31st year on August 19 – 23 and we can’t wait! Liv Slater sups up for ESP… Without doubt this is the city’s biggest social event of the year and we guarantee a fantasic atmosphere! Nearly everyone in town heads to the Embankment every year to try a couple of the 350+ draught real ales, 100+ ciders and perries, European bottled beers and wines. It’s not all about the drink however; they’ve got some brilliant live bands set to play in the massive music marquee this year, as well as ESP’s very own Lunchtime Trivia Quiz, being held from Wednesday onwards. There’ll be goody bags for everyone who takes part and some fabulous prizes up for grabs, so why not come along and do battle – as long as your head’s not too befuddled by all the beer! Quiz master Ian Gray boasts - "This must be the biggest pub quiz for miles around, as tens of individual trivia-minded folk combine their
BEER FEST BANDS
with silly names (there’ll be a bottled Belgian lager this year called Slag – worth a try) but we really don’t recommend you take it upon yourself to have one of the 9%+ ABV beers!
collective knowledge and wisdom each day to challenge for the team prize, in the relaxed atmosphere of the Festival. Not only that, but there's always room for imagination in the daily competition for the most creative team name, many of which would never find their way onto ESP's pages, for one reason or another!" With two enormous marquees full of different drinks to try, deciding what to have can be a little bit difficult if you don’t normally drink real ale. The volunteers behind the bar are pretty good at recommending beers you might like – or you could just go for the ones
It looks like it’s going to be another good year for music, with some of the local area’s best bands playing alongside some of the country’s hottest acts. It all kicks off on August 19 with Cambridge-based Split Whiskers playing rough and tumble Blues and raw Rock’n’Roll. The party continues on August 20 with The Aviators, whose catchy but experimental pop has seen these Spalding lads get tipped for the top. Peterborough’s The Mighty Quinn will also be bringing their Mod-influenced Rock which has seen them win many fans on the pub circuit. Nine Below Zero, who honed their Blues-influenced sound in the middle of the 1977 London Punk explosion, headline August 21 and Whittlesey’s Acer return to the Beer Fest after a brilliant time last year, when they won the festival’s Battle of the Bands competition. Groove Cartel will be bringing their unique blend of Funk, Rock and Dance to the festival on August 22 and 60’sinfluenced The Nuggets will be reliving the ‘summer of love’ all over again. August 23 will be packed full of music such as alt-rock from The Librarians, Indie Punk from Revenue and cheeky Indie Pop from Plastic Soup, as well as acoustic Rock from newly rejuvenated Angryman and Think Floyd, one of the world’s best Pink Floyd Tribute Acts.
If you fancy heading down most evenings, it’s a good idea to join CAMRA, as not only will you be helping to save pubs and support campaigns to reduce tax on drinks, you’ll also get drastically reduced, if not free, entry for the entire festival. For more info visit www.beer-fest.org.uk or call 01733 764296.

A survey of 2,000 lads by realholidayreports.com has revealed Lorraine Kelly as the woman they’d most like to rub suntan oil on. The annoying morning TV presenter even polled higher than Kelly Brook! Never has the slogan ‘Should’ve gone to Specsavers’ been more appropriate…

IT’S A SIN NOT TO CHECK OUT THE BRAYS’ VIDEO!
A couple of months ago I was invited by local band, The Brays, to sit on a judging panel as they auditioned for dancers to be in their first ever video to mark the launch of their brilliant single, ‘Sin’. Right from the offset the band wanted to keep the video local with city locations (filmed in Angels and Radius) and local people featuring in it, which is why I got to play a cameo role! I slipped into my tux and appeared in a casino scene playing roulette while lead singer Gavin is trying to ignore the lusty temptations of local glamour model Kelly Bell (‘Sin’ is about Gavin resisting temptations). I’ve since had the privilege of being one of the first people to see the finished video at a special dinner screening (great lasagne by the way Keith) and cannot emphasise enough how fantastic it is and that’s not just because I’m in it! ‘Sin’ alone is one of the best singles to have ever been recorded by a local band and the stylish video that compliments it is sure to help catapult The Brays into the big time. Radius is screening the video on August 1 and then stages a launch night for the single on September 4 (email thebrays@hotmail.co.uk for tickets) plus you can get the video sent to your mobile on its release date (September 7) by texting Brays to 82822 in the meantime. They’ll also be performing live in the Queensgate Centre on September 13. You can read more about The Brays when we feature them in September’s issue of ESP.
JJ IS A BIRD HEADING FOR THE TOP FLIGHT
City boxer JJ Bird is now rated fifteenth in the country after the biggest night in his professional career to date saw him dust off former challenger for British, Commonwealth and European titles, David Walker, at the famous York Hall venue in Bethnal Green. It was JJ’s fourth win in six fights (one draw) and the toughest so far against an experienced fighter with considerable boxing pedigree. I’ve questioned the sport’s credibility of late with a lot of boxers wanting to be protected and picking whom they want to fight instead of rising to the challenge and making a name for themselves, which is exactly what JJ did. Credit to JJ for not dodging any opponent and credit to his trainer, former British champion Gary De Roux, for steering his fighter onto the road champions are made of. JJ will hopefully be fighting on home turf later this year and anyone with serious sponsorship intentions can bell him on: 07835 924908.
JACKIE’S (NICE) BUM WORKOUT
I’ve just finished watching The Beach Bum Workout DVD and have to say I’m impressed. That’s not just because the outfits worn by the girls got me a little excited – I’m impressed by the fact that local girl Jackie Diss, whose idea to make a DVD to tackle those wobbly bits before your body hits the beach this summer has come to fruition. Jackie not only stars in it, she was involved in every aspect of its entire production– not bad for a blonde bird! Jackie told me - “I’ve grown up in Peterborough and it’s where I built up my teaching experience and career working in clubs such as Fitness First, Sam Jones, the Regional Pool and Thomas Cook. The fitness industry is a career for people with a passion to help others. I wanted to pour all my experience and passion for fitness into the DVD and the end product is something I’m extremely proud of.” Jackie, I’m always pulling my groins – can you please show me how to stretch them correctly? I think they might need massaging too… Check out www.beachbumworkout.com
FOOD & WINE THE ITALIAN WAY
I was in good company. City Council leader Gillian Beasley and other Councillors plus dozens of prominent Italian businessmen socialising with different generations of Italians who came to the city in the 1950s and 60s, and others like yours truly who were born here. And what was the common thread that drew us together? It was food and wine - Italian food and wine from the region of Puglia to be precise. The Italian Community Association (ICA) staged a special evening at The Fleet with top chef from Puglia, Mino Maggi,

who laid on a fantastic cooking demonstration. Best of all, when he’d finished, he invited us to scoff the lot. The only thing better than eating Italian food is having someone make it for you – properly, like mamma.
The Fleet’s recently started to put on a range of events such as this one to cater for everyone and you don’t have to be Italian to attend. As long as you like good food, great company and cheap drinks then you’ll be hard pushed for a better night out. Visit www.thefleet-ica.co.uk for the latest.
CUT ABOVE THE REST DURING CREDIT CRUNCH
Not a lot happens in Stanground, I should know, I live there. Once an Austin Allegro splattered a hedgehog while it attempted to cross Southfields Drive and another time we saw a Rolls Royce parked outside the chippy. But last month our beloved Ostlers (hardware store of some 30 years or more) gave way to the Barber Pole – a traditional gent’s hairdressers. I’d been paying £25 for a haircut but times are hard and owners Aurellio and Rai will lower your ears for just £8. Better still, it’s a fiveminute walk from my house. In a country where it seems the cost of living is spiralling out of control like Fredo’s wife in Godfather II (the wedding scene), it’s comforting to see common sense still prevails.
NO OFFENCE INTENDED DEAN!
Sometimes things just don't work out the way you thought they would and so I'd like to apologise to Dean Penny and his family for last month's story 'Dean Spends A Penny on the Pull'. The source who provided the information assured me it was true and that no offence would be taken, however it turns out the source was wrong and the story was untrue. More importantly I made a judgement based on the banter we've had over the years and was sure you'd take it as it was meant, light heartedly - it certainly wasn't my intention to cause any distress or offence. My judgement of how you would react to the story, based on our history of taking the Mickey out of one another was obviously way off. Sorry mate, now how about a beer and some banter on who's going to win the Champions' League this season?!
LITE FANTASTIC EVERY WEDNESDAY
I’ve never had the face for radio (I’m not as pretty as Keith or indeed Gregg for that matter) until now, because I’m gracing the airwaves twice every Wednesday on Lite FM (106.8), starting off with Keith Dalton from 8am on the Early Morning Wake-up and then as copresenter on the Two Posh Geezers show alongside Posh’s broken-nosed press officer Phil Adlam for an hour between 78pm. Breakfast listeners are starting to realise I’m c*ap at the ‘Nail The Name’ feature but then again I’m sure Keith makes them as hard as possible for me. A recent example was the name of a Scottish city – the clue was ‘thick chips’. There’s a pair of cinema tickets up for grabs for the first person to call me (01733 704106) with the answer on any Wednesday morning, just quote this article. And I usually set myself up for even more stick on the Two Posh Geezers show – a sports programme where I regularly admit to not knowing too much about rubbish sports like cricket and golf. This leaves Phil, the only person to ever return from Marbella boasting the same shade of lily white skin he flew out with, wanting to strangle me on many an occasion. So, if you want to educate me or talk local sport in general with Phil and I, wait until we’re live on air and text 81800 Lite, then space, then your message or email studio@1068.com

ENTER THE FACE OF ESP’08 NOW! Every one has been different and this time it could be your year… but don’t leave it too late! Who knows, this year you could have that magic something we’re looking for and become the Face of ESP’08, but time is ticking. Since we launched the Face of ESP back in 2003 every winner has put their own stamp on the role and many have stayed with the magazine. Becca Evans our first ever Face continues to model and heads up our promotions team. Kayleigh Butler (2004) and Hailey-Anne Carpenter (2005) have since moved away from the city but Susan Saunders (2006) now writes her Confessions column for the magazine, models and joins promotions. We’re hoping this year’s Face, Kerry Bates will also stick around after enjoying her fantastic year but you never know, we might just lose her to a TV career! The opportunities can come thick and fast if you win - Becca has been taking to the catwalk in various fashion shows and also became the face of Olan Mills shortly after her year with ESP came to end. Both
Susan and Kerry now have regular radio slots on Lite FM every week, so you never know where this competition might take you. One thing’s for sure though, you don’t have to do a parachute jump like Hailey-Anne and Kerry during your year… not unless you really want to! This competition’s all about opportunities and making you a recognised ‘face’ about town, so if you fancy a little celeb treatment and can truly be a positive ambassador for ESP for a year, give it a try… you never know, this time it could be you!
WIN over £5,000 in prizes Win over £5,000 in prizes – enter now www.esp3.net/face or pick up an entry form from our sponsors. Call 01733 579707 for details. Queensgate is the place to head for some retail therapy for those living in the Peterborough area, and for some out-of-towners too! ESP’s Joanne Quinney went style-spotting in the centre to find the trendiest shoppers and staff Peterborough has to offer. On a busy Saturday afternoon Queensgate Shopping Centre is bustling with the city’s trendiest people, all hitting the shops to update their wardrobes. But how does Peterborough cut it in the fashion stakes? We’re not too far from London so surely it should be quite good?! The staff of some of Queensgate’s trendiest shops including Warehouse, Faith, H & M and Envy pulled it out the bag in the style stakes, and shoppers alike did the ‘borough proud!
Emma Osborne (Faith staff) Age: 17 From: Yaxley Wearing: Primark top, Topshop jeans and belt, Faith shoes
There are 90 shops to choose from and with new names like Blue Inc (already open) and Jane Norman coming to the city for the first time the style options are getting broader all the time. Look out too for a new split-level, flagship River Island store bringing menswear into the city centre and if all that shopping works up an appetite there’ll be a new Millies Cookies cafe opening outside BHS and a Lovejuice drinks bar opening outside Boots.

HE’S A LAYD EE! Oh how we all patted ourselves on the back when we spotted what we thought was the world’s most elaborate (and daft) April Fools joke when the front page of the newspaper was plastered in a picture of ‘The World’s First Pregnant Man’. Three months on and an Oprah appearance later and it’s proved to be no hoax, as Thomas Beatie proudly shows off newborn daughter Susan to the waiting media. But before everything we thought we knew about biology and ‘the birds and the bees’ was turned on its head, it was revealed that Thomas actually used to be a female beauty queen called Tracy Lagondino but had a partial sex change 10 years ago. So that’s that explained then, end of story – or so you’d think. But no, the interest and revelations continue, the latest being that Thom as decided against a Caesarean section and actually delive red the baby naturally, well, as naturally as a pregnant, beard ed, former woman pumped full testosterone and called Thom as can do. And that’s the bit that’s driving me nuts, if nuts isn’t too unfortunate a word to use. I have no issue with Tracy’s treatment to becom e Thomas, nor with him living with a female partner, nor with the fact that he will be ‘daddy’ to the child he gave birth to. What I really don’t understand is how he can be legally classe d as male. In cases of transgender, when a man feels trappe d in a woman’s body as with Tracy/Thomas, when the huge and radical decision is made to undergo a sex change, a full hysterectomy is an important part of the package, the remov al of the most fundamental parts that make a woman a woma n. How can you truly feel and believe that you are a man, but still have the desire, and the ability, to be pregnant and to then choose to go through labour? And therein my point is proved . I’m not going to jump on that sisterhood bandwagon of declar ing that no man could ever cope with the pain of labour when they can’t even cope with the pain of a headache withou t overdosing on Nurofen; but you find me one man who, faced with a choice of labour or surgery, would actually reject a lovely big dose of anaesthetic with a jaunty - “No thank you Mr Doctor, I’d much prefer the agony of trying to squirt an eight pound er out of my nether regions instead if you don’t mind.” I can only think of one, and she’s called Thomas. I rest my case.

MONEY TALKS Sad news as it was revealed in an emotional interview in the News of the World that Gabriela ‘Cheeky Girl’ Irimia had miscarried a baby at 5-6 weeks pregnant. A baby that Lembit Opik, the Liberal Democrat former boyfriend of Gabi and father of said miscarried baby, didn’t even know she was expecting. So the question is begged, why exactly would she choose a tabloid newspaper to break the sad news to him? Call me old-fashioned but wouldn’t a phone call or even a private text have been a bit more appropriate? Still, whilst I’m full of sympathy for the sad loss, I’m sure the newspaper found a few thousand ways of comforting her.

JOKES OF MR POSH IN TOPLESS HOLIDAY THE MONTH PHOTO SHOCK
While Britain's red top tabloids have spent all summer printing pictures of Cristiano Ronaldo lying on a beach, David Beckham in his new pants and Frank Lampard wearing the biggest sunglasses in the world EVER, here at ESP my email inbox received a picture of a well-known football personality that is set to rock Peterborough United supporters to the bottom of their replica Adidas socks.... match day mascot 'Mr Posh' (aka Mick Jones) as you've never seen him before (unless you're Mrs Posh of course). It was taken on his pre-season holiday in Cyprus and was sent in by his daughter Little Miss Posh (Kara) who, after reading my mock-rant about Mr Posh not wearing a monocle, decided to do something about it and for Father’s Day she bought him a very dapper looking antique one. It's set to make its first team home debut on Saturday August 12 against Leyton Orient, so keep an eye open for it.
"Why is it you can't buy a simple sandwich anymore. It's got to be a 'lunchtime creation'. A half-baked, sun-blushed, black olive, low fat, gluten-free ciabatta all neatly packed with finest oak age Tewkesbury cheddar, delicately laid on a bed of honey-roasted, university educated ham for £8.50." - Debra Jane Appleby.
"Petrol prices are so high at the moment that I can't afford to take my car when I go dogging. You should see the looks I get when I turn up on my cleaning lady’s push bike - 'Coo-eee, anyone fancy a backie?' " - Alan Carr. "I'm trying to stop smoking at the moment, so bought a book about addiction that said if you're trying to give up something, you should replace it with a hobby, so I took up a pottery course. On the first day they taught us how to make ashtrays." Steve Hughes.
NEXT MONTH: I’ll bring you news of The Cresset Comedy Club’s great autumn line-up.
STAND OUT, STAND UP I have two great stand-up shows to draw your attention to that you might have not spotted - Paddy McGuinness on Saturday September 27, and Russell Howard on November 22. I know Russell’s last show at The Broadway was a sell-out, so if you want to see one of the rising stars of the comedy world don’t leave it to the last minute. Meanwhile Paddy’s last visit to The Broadway in 2006, was one of the comedy highlights of that year so I’m sure his new show will be equally popular. The Broadway box office: 01733 316100.

ESPCELEBS Sharleen Spiteri is the face and voice of one of the biggest British bands of the last 20 years. Texas boast over 15 million platinum sales and 13 top ten hits to their name and there’s more of where that came from, but not just yet. This is Sharleen time. A chance to take complete artistic control was something she’d always said no to, until now. “Texas are my family and they’ll always be there. But after the last record everybody decided they wanted to do different things and different projects. We’ve been together 22 years and still have every intention of continuing to make music together. I know when we go back to being a band again we’ll come back to the table with fresher ideas and even better material to record.” Timing is indeed everything and Melody is an album that wears its heart on its sleeve. It was written by Sharleen after a period in her life when she found herself having to reflect and refocus following a split from her long-term partner. But it’s far from morbid; Melody is touching, lyrically powerful, catchy and soulful. Sharleen has made the kind of album she’s always dreamed of and is very proud of it. “The catalyst for me writing this record came from my split with my long-term partner,” she explained. “Once I got my head together I still wanted to make music but this time it was from the heart. I always toyed with the idea of writing about my emotions when with Texas, but it didn’t really seem appropriate at the time and I was never confident of being able to express them like I am now. I guess writing about my personal circumstances has helped me move on and I also get satisfaction from knowing that people who buy this record can appreciate that it’s for real and created from within.
Sharleen Spiteri has released her first solo album and describes it as her ‘personal fantasy record’. Pep Cipriano spoke to the Texas frontwoman to find out why… 22

“I think a lot of people just appreciate a quality song, one they can relate to and sing along with,” she tells me. “Songs from years ago were simple with a verse, bridge and chorus – they were usually around three and a half minutes long and made an impact because of it. I’ve used orchestration in this album and it’s something we’re hearing more of today. By making music this way, it takes it to another level and makes a change to listening to stuff with whistles and drums! Melody is all about well constructed songs with old themes accentuated with the use of new technology.” Melody is steeped in the sound and textures of 1960s Soul and 1950s Rock ‘n’ Roll but cleverly contemporary in spirit. It’s a timely reminder that Sharleen was already dabbling in similar influences over a decade ago. The opening track, It Was You, has an unmistakable Motown riff to it, much
the same as material the likes of Amy Winehouse and Duffy have been producing. But Melody is original and personal. Going solo has allowed her the freedom to indulge in consuming passions that are Sharleen Spiteri to the core. “I've always wanted to make a Nancy Sinatra record," she explains. "Being on my own meant I could take complete control and make the kind of album I've always dreamed of. That's what Melody is all about. It's my dream Nancy and Lee Hazlewood record, but with Johnny Cash, Motown, Elvis, The Righteous Brothers, all these things thrown in. “‘It Was You’ is a very strong female record and I think people will be able to relate to it. Hopefully the whole album will appeal to everyone. I’d like to think it has no age, genre or barriers. People have told me it’s the kind of record that has something for the young, old and both sexes and I’m glad it’s struck a cord in everyone who’s listened to it.” The finished article highlights the voice, soul and spirit that have already made Sharleen Spiteri one of the most successful women in modern British music. Sharleen’s career has grown with the same intensity as the public’s demand for gossip and sensationalism around pop stars and celebrities. But misbehaving, grabbing the headlines for something other than her talent and attacking paparazzi has never really been her scene. “Let’s say I’ve had an interesting 22 years with the guys in my band. With them (Texas) I’ve seen things in men that women should never know! But at the end of the day we’re all about making music and not headlines. I have a nice life, it’s simple and filled with good supportive friends I can go out and have fun with. I guess they’ve kept me grounded and focused at times. I have no interest in being a celebrity, I just want to make music and sing.” A photo of Sharleen graces the album cover and it’s an image she now appreciates reflects the emotional message of the album. “I think I was moving my hair out of my face or perhaps getting some mascara out of my eye when it was taken! I was trying to go for that Nancy Sinatra look anyway - and think I pulled it off to some degree. I guess the photo sums up where my head was after my split. It’s almost like I’m wiping away a tear, putting on my heels and getting on with it!” Melody has just been released on Mercury Records. www.sharleenspiteri.co.uk

MEN’S GROOMING ON A SHOESTRING
Guys, you don’t have to spend a fortune to look groomed to perfection - there are so many products tailored to you and available for just a few pounds that there’s no excuse not to look your best! This month I’ve been checking out what’s hot and what’s not in the men’s grooming world with the big brands, as well as some up-and-coming names showing us what they’ve got on offer – without breaking the bank. The usual household favourites proved pretty popular with the guys I asked as you might expect! L’Oreal (prices from £2.79) and Nivea for Men moisturisers (from £2.69) were among the front runners with their simple products, skin expertise and wide availability – Boots in Queensgate, Tesco at Serpentine Green – you name it! The Gillette Fusion shaving range (from £3.49) was a popular choice and Sure for Men’s new range of extra tough antiperspirants with high tech caps and adrenaline responsive technology (from £2.29 at Boots) fared well, but there were a couple of surprises too with some smaller brands breaking through with great new products at affordable prices. First up was the Real Shaving Company (RSC). They may not be as famous as Gillette just yet, but have plenty of experience in making you guys look great! RSC started up way back in 1953, supplying barbers worldwide with high quality, professional products. Now they’ve taken their grooming knowhow to bring us a new shaving and skincare range with a modern twist. Best of all, the new products are all alcohol free and made with organic, natural ingredients – and prices start at just £3.99 in Boots so you don’t have to part with much cash for a salon quality product. We roped in some willing ESP testers, Andy and Sean, to try out the RSC range to see what all the fuss is about – so were they impressed? Andy - “I used the shaving cream which was tricky to wash off compared to what I normally use but at least it delivered a close shave!” Sean - “The shave cream is great and the first thing I found is that it completely prevents razor burn which I suffer from, lathers up quickly and goes a long way. I’ll definitely continue to buy this one!

“I’ve just started using the eye hydrator too and so far it appears to do what it says on the bottle. It gives a nice refreshing feeling around the eyes ready for work in the morning. I also use the Self Heating Pre-Shave Face Mask. It’s great and imitates the hot towel feeling you get if you pay for a ‘proper’ shave at a barbers. The heat is definitely there but it’s a once a week job though as you should leave it on for five minutes - not so easy when rushing to work.” Another smaller brand with a range of affordable products is the Natural Grooming Company. Available from just £1.99 at Asda in Rivergate and using organic extracts, it’s free of alcohol and comes in recyclable packaging as an added bonus. So there you have it – grooming made easy! It’s worth remembering that you don’t need to stick with the biggest brands to get a great product. Have a go with some of the less well known products and try some new ones when the shops run special offers – you may just find a bargain. So what are you waiting for? Your skin and wallet deserve it.

GO GREEN WITH LUSH
Good news for the environment - Lush soaps are now made with a palm oil free base so you can look after your skin and do your bit to save the earth at the same time with their funky range. Lush has been looking into the environmental and social concerns and found worldwide demand for the oil used in regular soap is clearing ancient rainforests to make room for more palm oil plantations. So, the guys and girls at Lush have taken matters into their own hands and have worked with another soap maker to come up with an industry first – a palm-free soap base made from a blend of sunflower oil, rapeseed oil and coconut oil to be used in all their deliciously different soaps. So be green and brighten your bathroom at the same time – try The Godmother (£2.25 for 100g). Available in the Queensgate store or at www.lush.co.uk and scented with the amazing vanilla based Snow Fairy scent, this pink soap is covered with silver fairies and leaves a trail of sparkle in its wake – for great looks with a conscience!

Confessions... Susan Saunders
susan.saunders@espmag.co.uk
Are pampered princes the new pampered princesses? OK, so it seems gone are the days when men headed off t’coal mining yard or off down t’quarry, stopping for a 20 minute door-stop sandwich and pint of real ale break. No, it seems that these days, you’ll more than likely see ‘our’ men down t’beauty salon for a sack, back and crack or otherwise! Now don’t get me wrong, my ‘type’, for want of a better word,
would be (aside from the tall, dark and handsome stereotype) a polished, well dressed man, preferably on my wave-length to get my jovial personality and mad humour (I’m a bit of a classroom clown if you hadn’t gathered), preferably with all his own teeth! Although my man checklists, written and unwritten, are extensive, I still don’t want a guy who cares more about his
appearance than I do. I remember in the era, better known as ‘Ben – Lo’ (Jen from the block and Ben Affleck’s pairing), Ben got absolutely slated by the press for wearing make-up and donning a man bag! And whilst at the time this subject was pretty taboo, we all couldn’t help thinking he was completely full of it. In this era, better known as ‘Susan’s era’ – hey it is my column after all! -
these things now appear to pass us by undetected. Let me explain; firstly there’s the whole ‘Beck’s plucks his eyebrows’ thing. This I can deal with and would almost go as far as to encourage, because a mono-brow, AKA the ‘Mano-brow’ has never been a good look – not on my watch anyway. The ‘sack, back and crack’. One word - PAINFUL. A beautician friend was even telling me that she has regular male clients who have MANicures (as it’s in the spelling, I’ll let them off), pedicures and massages! On the other hand though girls, do you really want a guy with dirty nails, or worse – eagle claws? I think not! Then there are the boy gossips. Is it me, or are they worse than us girls – right old ladies convention and everything! Fake tanning – why you’d ever opt for this is beyond me, I learnt the hard way! Another of my pampered prince, lad mates decided to try his hand on a sun bed and after a nine minute session (numpty) it was no surprise to hear he’d burnt himself! The vain creatures are even detagging themselves from snaps on Facebook! This is either a side effect of sheer vanity or they aren’t your good old monogamous types. Ladies what’s your theory? Answers to my email address please, I’m intrigued. I’ll be the first to admit, whilst I have dedicated an article to poking fun at pampered princes, I don’t think I’ll be going for scruffy, unkempt men any time soon. I am more impressed by men who look after themselves. In my opinion a ‘catch’ would be funny, jovial, sociable and love their mummy… half an ounce of intelligence or talent will go a long way too! I guess the bottom line is though, I just can’t like a guy who takes longer than me in the mirror. Absolutely not.

ESP Paparazzi goes trackside at new Peterborough Raceway!
Our Paparazzi crew like to get out an about to capture the action so they dropped into the new kart track in North Bretton. ESP girls Becca and Susan caused a little chaos on the track while Emma Bothamley was behind the lens. Peterborough Raceway’s just opened at Venture Park off Stirling Way in North Bretton. Their fleet of 200cc karts look great fun and the race goers were having a fantastic time whizzing round the track at speeds of up to 45mph! If you fancy a go it starts at a tenner for a standard practice session and you can get a DVD of your race too. If you reckon you’ve got a little Lewis Hamilton in your family the guys tell us they run a Race School for 8-15 year-olds to develop their potential. All cadets have to qualify for a License to Kart first which consists of a single session of tuition and practice where they’ll be taught to drive safely and confidently. We had a great time down there and this track is perfect for a family day out, a party or even corporate entertainment. They even run their own Grand Prix where the fastest drivers from each month will go to head-tohead. Go on, give ‘em a call and give it a go! Word is spreading about a hidden gem in a gorgeous country setting – have you heard about The Kings Head at Apethorpe, just the other side of Wansford? referring us to friends and we have increased patronage and sales dramatically.”
You can’t beat recommendation and when your regulars are telling their friends about your wonderful food and hospitality you can’t hope for better. Since Julia and Steven Wells took over The Kings Head pub and restaurant just over three years ago business has boomed. They’re both fully qualified chefs and business managers in the catering industry and worked for a worldwide catering company before buying The Kings Head, so you’re certainly in safe hands! “We believe that we offer the same standard of food and are passionate about the whole business,” says Steve. “Our regular customers are always

Now if you’re about to hit Multi-Map or install the sat nav to locate this little village we can tell you now that you don’t need to panic! It’s only a 20 minute ride from the centre of Peterborough, 10 minutes from Stamford, 15 minutes from Oundle and 30 minutes from Bourne. But let’s face it – if you want to find a genuine country pub with some atmosphere you’re going to have to hit the road and catch a bit of scenery! This place doesn’t disappoint though – it’s a great blend of a friendly local pub and a quality restaurant. Weary day at the office? Pop in for a cheeky wine after work and de-stress. They boast a full modern wine list with bin ends supplied by the Winesmith at Nassington. Fancy a pint with your mates? Pull up a stool at the bar and sup with a quality range of real ales on offer, all kept at their best. “All of our beers are lovingly cared for by Steve’s dad Peter,” explains Julia. “He was a publican for

many years and has a reputation for keeping the beer in perfect condition, we always have the old favourite Land Lord and London Pride and our third real ale is always from a local supplier - either from Digfield Ales or the Grainstore Brewery.” The great thing about this pub is there’s a room to suit every mood and every occasion.
The décor is warm and cosy with candles and log fires and a different feel to each eating area from a pet-friendly bar in a bistro style, to the relaxed lounge bar eating area and the spacious, pretty restaurant.
“All of our desserts are homemade and very popular, especially the summer pudding and lemon meringue pies!” If for once the weather realises it is actually summer you can always kick back and relax in their lovely courtyard garden area or take a table outside at the front of the building where you can watch the horses trotting past... Ahh, a country pub truly at its best! Don’t be fooled though – The Kings Head might be in a quiet village location but it’s certainly not sleepy when it comes to functions and events.
There’s a full range of menus including bar snacks, olives and warm nuts, a fixed price menu (two courses for £12.95) and a full a la carte menu and all these are available at every service. “We have very well trained and friendly staff who understand the menus and can readily discuss any of the dishes,” Steve tells us. “The food is all homemade and cooked to order, the ingredients are sourced locally and bought in daily from lots of local suppliers.
“We have regular theme nights and live music at least once a month on a Friday night,” says Julia. “These have included Jazz nights, Soul in the bowl nights, Indian, Greek, Spanish, Halloween specials, children’s parties – you name it!” Clearly it’s also perfect for weddings and special events and has space for additional marquees. It might seem a long time way off yet, but as the team prepare for the build up to Christmas, Julia tells us they’ll be fully decorating the pub with all the trimmings ready for work Christmas parties and diners joining family or friends. They also have a visit from Father Christmas every year who gives all the children a free present and have Christmas carols from the village musicians.

Apparently we’ve missed (or maybe you didn’t!) the thirteenth annual Kissing Day last month. When you pucker-up you certainly want to smell sweet but is ‘dragon’s breath’ ruining your kissing action?! This event was originally launched by Denplan to encourage us to keep our teeth and gums healthy as bacteria in the mouth can cause bad breath. Kissing or just chatting, bad breath is something you can become really selfconscious about. You can get paranoid if you eat pungent foods such as onions and garlic, especially when you’re told you’ve got garlic breath or ‘morning breath’ (how lovely!). Thankfully this is ‘transient bad breath’ and is something we control. But what happens when you get PBB - persistent bad breath, and no I am not talking from personal experience! Bad breath, or Halitosis as it’s known, can become a real social problem.
might want to consider looking at other factors that can contribute to the problem such as -
• Change your tooth brush monthly – own up who has had the same one for a year – just think of the bacteria on that!
• A diet high in refined carbs (white sugar, bread, pasta etc)
• Floss to get out the old food - hamsters store food in the mouth, we don’t need to!
• Foods rotting in the gut
• Drink plenty of fresh water – it helps the flow of saliva
For some people no amount of mints, spot spray, flossing, brushing or using a tongue scraper (looks a bit like the tool to de-ice the car with) can really help long term, if the problem is actually further down. The mouth is an extension of the gut, it is where it all begins, so it comes as no surprise that the health of our inners can determine the sweetness of our breath.
• Dehydration
Apart from the obvious visit to your dentist and maintaining good teeth cleaning, you
• Try bowel cleansing and/or detoxification
• Chronic sinus infections • Inadequate digestion of foods • Constipation • Bacterial/fungal overgrowth in the gut
Some remedies that might help include • Eat whole foods including high veg and herb intake (all high in nutrients) • Take probiotics (bacteria that favour a healthy gut)
So, you might have missed this year’s Kissing Day but there is always next year! X Karen

Office Angels in Peterborough have a fab new look, so who else should help launch their gorgeous refurbished offices than our own heavenly Kerry Bates? the new OA factor in Peterborough! As one of the sponsors last year we’ve had Kerry on stand by for our new experience in recruitment services with our fantastic refurbished branch right in the heart of the city centre.”
Kerry, who registered with Office Angels last year after she was crowned Face of ESP, was stunned at the transformation of the branch after she was given a VIP tour. The new look offices at 3 Church Street, Peterborough now offer candidates and clients alike a modern, up-to-the-minute, professional recruitment experience from the moment they walk through the door. “Everyone was so friendly,” said Kerry “and the new layout for Office Angels is brilliant, the best thing about it was the computers that pop up from under the desk - brilliant invention! I really do like the pink theme they have going on in there too!” Alex James, Branch Manager of Office Angels Peterborough told ESP – “Face of ESP Kerry was one of the first to experience

The guys and girls at Office Angels told us they’re determined to continue to be the recruitment consultancy of choice for all job seekers in Peterborough now and in the future. The fab refurb highlights Office Angels’ continued commitment to this area and Alex told us “There’s been steady growth in secretarial and officebased roles since the branch first opened in 1994. This investment also cements our position as the recruitment agency of choice in the city centre, and the starting point for many candidate’s new careers and clients’ recruitment needs.” Kerry was given the full tour and even enjoyed a coffee with some of the girls to catch up on all the gossip. Alex is excited about welcoming people into the newly refurbished branch. “We have an enthusiastic team here at Office Angels who are all from Peterborough and the surrounding areas and have a wealth of experience in the local market. “Our team are award-winning both as a branch and as individuals, including Rachel Utting who came third in the annual company awards in 2007 for her role as an Assignment Co-ordinator. Currently this year she’s in first position, which is no mean feat and reflects the level of service
and commitment she gives to her clients and candidates. On the Permanent team are Richard Williams and Holly Evans, and fulfilling the vitally important reception and administration side are Alannah Di Cataldo and Lucy Burston. Whoever you speak to or deal with in our branch, you can be assured of a professional and personal service at all times.” Peterborough increasingly has to compete with London and Cambridge to attract and retain top candidates. Office Angels delivers just the right unique, personal service to ensure they can match the right person to the right job. “We operate an open-door policy,” said Alex, “and encourage everyone to drop in to check out the latest jobs on offer, or even just say hello!”

Rogue Traders – your time is up! What do you do when you need a tradesman or trade professional? Ask a friend for a recommendation?
Is that a YES I hear you say? Well you are not alone as 9 out of 10 people in the UK rely on personal recommendations when it comes to finding help with repairs, maintenance and improvement work in their homes, gardens and businesses. They also agree that choosing from a directory or advertisement is often a lottery as you never know who you are going to get!! How fantastic would it be good if we all had free access to a one-stop shop of highly recommended, vetted and approved local tradesmen, who comply to a customer service charter, who will turn up on time, want to do a quality job and are prepared to be accountable for their work by allowing you to rate them online? Imagine how much time we would save, with no risk of rogue traders or shoddy workmanship and never relying on having to ask friends again. Bring it on…!!! Well thanks to one city business woman and award winning Director, Eileen Le Voi, the waiting is nearly over! She has come to our rescue and is on the cusp of launching our first ever local Trade Association called www.trustourtrades.com, a predominately web-based service offering you free access to the best local approved tradesmen in the PE postcode district, for both the domestic and commercial market. Eileen says “trustourtrades.com is all about bringing “word of mouth” recommendations into the 21st century using modern technology and the internet. A strong database of carefully selected quality tradesmen will be in place prior to the full launch of the website shortly, however, the first phase of the website is available now at www.trustourtrades.com; this is where members of the public can recommend worthy tradesmen and where potential members can register their interest in joining the association.” Their goal is to establish the trustourtrades.com logo as a symbol of quality and trust in this area so that when you see a member displaying this logo on their van, stationery, business cards etc, you can be assured that they’re honest, reliable and will do a quality job. “Places are limited”, says Eileen “so our message to all professional tradesmen is – ‘you will be promoted as being one of the best in your trade so get one step ahead of your competitors, places are going fast so register your interest on the website NOW or you will get left behind’.’” Darren Richardson of HeafFix didn’t need any convincing to snap up this opportunity and was one of the first to sign up. He said “my company motto is – “Quality of Service, Guaranteed by Us… Recommended by You’. I believe that every customer deserves a high standard of service and that is what I always give them. trustourtrades.com provides me and my business with a unique way of letting the public know that we are one of the best local plumbing and heating companies and are confident to have our work rated by our customers. I am proud to display the “trustourtrades.com Approved Member” logo on my van as it will give all consumers confidence that HeatFix are recommended, reputable and will always provide a quality service.” So watch this space folks, we can’t wait to let you know about the full launch shortly…
Golf day raises £900 for life saving service Who would think that a leisurely game of golf taking up a whole day could raise hundreds of pounds for an emergency service that calculates its life-saving response times in minutes and seconds? Well, that’s just what happened when people solutions business, THE ONE GROUP, invited thirty six of its clients and staff to a Golf Day held at the Greetham Valley Hotel, Golf and Conference Centre near Rutland. Quite apart from the social and ‘networking’ element to the day, THE ONE GROUP was keen to raise as much money as possible for MAGPAS, an emergency response medical service, staffed entirely by volunteers which covers Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. MAGPAS is a charity and as such is funded entirely through donations from the general public. The day was organised by THE ONE GROUP’s Will Dempsey, who is a keen golfer and PGA coach who was available on the day to give a little extra help to novice golfers in return for a contribution to the charity. Commenting Will said: “We have been overwhelmed by the response from our clients. Everyone has been so supportive – not only have we had a really enjoyable day’s golf, but we have raised over £900 for MAGPAS, a charity that does such vital work in the crucial period following an accident. “MAGPAS doctors and paramedics often work 12 hour shifts in their own time, for no payment and the service they provide as first responders is literally life saving. Their aim is to be at the scene of an accident within four minutes of being called out.” Many of the companies who came along to the Golf Day also donated high-value items that THE ONE GROUP auctioned off over dinner at the end of the day, including golf clubs, hampers and fine wine. Tristan Drane a director with THE ONE GROUP said: “The Golf Day has been a huge success in every respect and I would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved and particularly to our clients who dug deep to help us support MAGPAS.”

RED HOT DATE WITH
A TOPLESS MODEL! 44

irstly, it was red and no ordinary red at that. It was the kind of red that belonged to a shell of a Ferrari, so even before I pushed the engine start button (keyless entry and start) I was feeling pretty good with myself. So good, that I went out and bought a new pair of designer sunglasses to go with my new set of wheels. I even changed my pants (I wore the same two days in row), as I felt she deserved it. It was like being on a first date, she dressed to impress and I impressed by re-dressing.
F
Then there was the ‘sport’ button. Words cannot describe what a button like this does to
exhaust note rasps and barks with purpose as you make your way through the slick six-speed box. In sport form you can’t help driving this car like you’ve just stolen it, but it’s an addiction you soon kick when you realise what driving the Astra in this mode does to its fuel consumption! The guys at Marshall Vauxhall let me have this car for a couple of days and I have to say I really didn’t want to give it back. The TwinTop is the kind of car everyone would like. It appeals to your grandparents, your mum, the old man, your girlfriend and your bit on the side. This is
I KNEW STRAIGHT AWAY I WAS GOING TO LIKE THIS CAR. SHE WAS A BIT OF ALRIGHT AND I COULDN’T WAIT TO SEE WHAT SHE LOOKED LIKE WITH HER TOP DOWN… a petrol head like me. Engaging ‘sport’ mode was like being on the Millennium Falcon (Star Wars) when Han Solo put her into ‘hyperdrive’ to speed away from the exploding Death Star. Press this button and all of a sudden this fun to drive, sporty Vauxhall Astra TwinTop turns into a missile with grunt, unadulterated power and poise. The driving experience completely changes and with it you turn into a poor man’s Michael Schumacher. The suspension tightens up; the gear change becomes more responsive, the steering more precise and the
The TwinTop seats four adults and there’s room for luggage too (205 litres of boot space for all you scientists out there). It’s bursting at the seams with features you’d expect to get with a modern car - and the list of optional extras is impressive too. The model I’m pictured posing with at the end of our two-day love affair came with the Plus Pack option. This meant I had cruise control and 18-inch 11spoke alloy wheels, which accentuated the car’s good looks, just like a pair of heels makes the most of a good set of pins on a babe. This particular model, a 2 litre 16v turbo, also underwent an ECU revamp, which boosted its power to 240 BHP. It translates into being able to comfortably overtake in sixth gear and feeling like I’d been possessed by the devil in sport mode.
what Vauxhall have done so well, they’ve created a car that’s attractive to both sexes and looks equally good as a hard top as when it’s unzipped for the world to see you driving around, boosting your street cred. The roof in this model takes just 25 seconds to electrically unfold and tuck itself into the boot. Five electric motors, eight hydraulic cylinders and 14 articulated joints combine, to slice the steel roof off and it’s at this point you appreciate just how stunning she is – and why wouldn’t she be – the Astra has its origins from

legendary Italian designers, Giugario.
As part of a TwinTop promotion, Marshall Vauxhall has a batch of these on sale at discounted prices. They currently have, for example; an 08 registered 1.6 Sport with airconditioning and alloys for just £13,995. In short, the TwinTop offers all the fun of a convertible but with the security of a hard top. If your heart says convertible and head says coupe – now you can have both. This Astra combines looks and personality, something I’ve struggled to come across until now, which is why we’re going on a date again some time soon…

MARSHALL DODGE SPONSORS OF THE PETERBOROUGH SAXONS
The Peterborough Saxons are sponsored by:
Marshall Dodge of Peterborough is the sponsor that keeps on giving and the Peterborough Saxons, who’ve been backed in 2008 by the might of Marshall Chrysler Jeep and Dodge continue to reap the benefits of their partnership with the east of England’s biggest motor group. for the national championship at Britbowl XXII this September.
Marshall, and the Dodge brand in particular has the Midas touch when it comes to local sport, backing The Saxons through another record-breaking season and lending their support to local racing sensation James Gornall who’s captured the 2008 British GT Championship in his 8.3 litre V10, 650 horsepower Dodge Viper. Oh yes, a genuine British racing champion and he hails from Werrington! James told ESP he’s been grateful for support from his sponsors such as Marshall Dodge – “I cannot thank my supporters and sponsors enough for their invaluable help this year. Having been unable to race for the last few years due to financial woes, it’s amazing to not only see a championship through to the end, but also to win it! I’ve only been able to complete two full seasons of racing since 2003, and I’ve won them both. I can only hope we can keep this momentum going and further progress my motorsport career.” Meanwhile back in Stanground, The Saxons have built on last season’s successes, winning seven of their nine games so far and after securing a play-off place for the second year in a row, the guys have high hopes of competing

As reward for their superb performances, Dealer Principal Alan Wensak invited The Saxons along to their dealership at Tyrrell Park, Boongate, to put a brand new STARTECH Dodge Caliber through its paces. The Saxons, recovering from a grueling 14 hour round trip, celebrated their 45 – 0 victory against the Plymouth Admirals by taking Alan up on his offer, and taking a spin in the Caliber, renowned for its bold looks, exceptional fuel-efficient performance and award-winning safety and security. The ride earned rave reviews from the American Footballers, who were quick to thank their sponsor for the many doors their partnership has opened for the citiy’s fastest growing sports club. General Manager Mark Kerr told ESP - “The Dodge client base are so fortunate to have such a supportive group of people to guide them through the vehicle buying process. If the help and guidance they’ve given us this year is an indication of the Marshall experience there can only be one place to visit next time you’re in the market for a new vehicle.” Two of the driving forces behind The Saxons’ recent rise are American nationals Mike Fears, and Brian Williams. The duo, both in the US Military are stationed at RAF Alconbury and couldn’t wait to get their hands on the Dodge, one of the most popular motor brands back in their native US. Brian said - “The Caliber is one eye-catching car; its sleek design was turning heads and drawing smiles all over the city. Everyone likes a good sound system and it didn’t disappoint, the audio was crystal clear. I loved driving this car, I wish it was mine!”
dontscrapthetap . c o m
Mike, or ‘The Nightmare’ as he’s known to his teammates, added - “I’m a big guy, so I was surprised at how spacious the Caliber was inside, I was really comfortable behind the wheel. The design is great, the car looks real macho, and it’s very affordable too” Mark Kerr joked - “We need to be careful, I’ll have the players wanting cars built into their contracts next season, I think they could get used to driving round in a brand new Dodge all day! “We’re all so grateful to Alan and the gang at Marshall Dodge for everything they’ve done for us this season, they’ve helped us reach the next level both in terms of performance, and professionalism, two things you can expect from them in bundles if you pop along and visit them at Boongate.” Catch The Saxons in action on Sunday August 17 Vs Bedfordshire Blue Raiders on RAF Alconbury to entertain the US troops stationed over here, then back at Stanground College on Sunday August 24, in the first round of the knockout stages (playoffs) at 2.30pm. If things go to plan the guys could be on their way to the Britbowl on Sunday September 21 at the state of the art Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster. For all the latest see www.thesaxons.co.uk.
What a summer so far! The weather might not have been as scorchio at times as we’d like but some of the events have certainly been hot and there’s plenty more to come. One of the highlights has been taking part in the Peterborough Festival when the ESP Dance Crew added some glamour to the parade and then performed some fantastic routines on stage in Central Park. The opening weekend was hosted by Kev and Abi from Hereward FM’s breakfast show who’d brought the new ‘Mini Thunder’ along for the first time. More than 37,000 people attended this year’s eight-day Peterborough Festival organised by Peterborough City Council and more than 2,500 people also took part in the event, including ESP! Whether it was jazz with Acker Bilk, fireworks with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra or some of the great day time entertainment on stage, the opening weekend was certainly a winner. It all carried on throughout the week and then ended with Hydromania on the river and the Rocky Horror Picture Show on the Embankment where the ESP Dance Crew joined the film’s original Magenta (Patricia Quinn) on stage to teach the crowds the Time Warp. Well done to Joe Ballard, the festival and events manager at Peterborough City Council, and his colleagues, for achieving all this with such a small team! Now look out for the City Council’s City Roots music festival on the Embankment on August 2 & 3.

WE ARE SCIENTISTS… …are returning to rock The Cresset in August in what promises to be another sell-out gig. The group is stopping off at the city venue just days after arriving in the UK fresh from a tour of the United States, where they’ve also been booked to appear on the David Lettermann show. Following their first appearance at The Cresset earlier this year, they’ve been constantly jetting between their base in New York and Europe to perform at major festivals throughout the summer, including Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Maidstone back in May, and Glastonbury at the end of June. They’ll also be rocking at T in the Park, Summercase Festival in Barcelona and at the famous Ibiza Rocks. We Are Scientists will appear at The Cresset on Thursday August 21. The show’s open to fans aged 14 and over, but all under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets cost £14 from The Cresset box office on 01733 265705 or online. www.ticketweb.co.uk
RUN DON’T WALK The Bluebell on Welland Road continues its live music sessions with a particular gem on Saturday August 2, when Run Don’t Walk hit the stage. Think rock guitar licks with a little Elvis Costello mixed with the vocal harmonies of Teenage Fanclub and you’re about there. Playing a mix of originals and covers, entrance is free of charge… it’s gonna be a good one! www.rundontwalk.net
LOCAL HEROES Peterborough based Kissmet, the world's only Bhangra Rock fusion band are now mid-way through their summer festival performances. Recent appearances have seen them perform at the Global Fusion Festival and the Rock for People Festival in Prague. I caught up with Ron Singh at Glastonbury. “Glastonbury’s been fantastic this year. It’s our fourth time performing here and this was the first time it didn't rain so it was great to be able to move about and see the whole site,” said Ron. “We’ve had the most awesome gig and had loads of positive feedback, so we're looking to play the Jazz World Stage next year to over 30,000 people and more TV cameras than we've ever seen before.” So everything's looking promising for Glastonbury 2009, watch out for Kissmet on the telly! It’s a long way from their first performance at The Crown on Lincoln Road all those years ago and they’ve travelled the world over to perform in Poland, Finland, Ireland, and Mexico. It’s not just summer festivals either, Kissmet will keep busy throughout the year and are planning to play a massive New Year gig on the beach in Goa.
RIVERSIDE REVIEW
“It'll be the perfect way to start the New Year as we're also releasing our new album, Tripping The Life Fantastic, and will be touring on the back of that," said Ron. "We miss performing in Peterborough but we never forget the great gigs we had there too. There's so much the band has done but yet so much more that it can still do. It's a big world out there and we want to see it all!" www.kissmet.co.uk
CITY ROOTS FESTIVAL When it comes to
local festivals, who’d have thought that Peterborough would have its very own Earth Dome? But that’s just one of the stages on offer at the City Roots Festival, being hosted on the embankment Saturday August 2 and Sunday August 3. Filling the gap left by The Willow Festival, City Roots will offer music, art, poetry, comedy and a host of other fun activities for visitors of all ages to enjoy. For those interested in something completely different, the Caberet stage promises to offer a random collection of live acts, including belly dancing, juggling, spoken word and free-style rapping. Councillor Matthew Lee, Peterborough’s cabinet member for community services told ESP - “City Roots is one of the many public events held at the embankment over the summer months and I’m really pleased that we’re able to put this area of the city to such good use and showcase local talent.” Karen Pincham, the city council’s events and community arts officer added - “The festival promises to be a really positive event, appealing to people of all ages, backgrounds and musical tastes.” Tickets for City Roots will be available on the day, but can be bought in advance from the Key Theatre or by calling 01733 552439. Entry’s just £6.50 per day or £10 for both days. Under 14s must be accompanied by an adult. www.cityroots.co.uk
The recent Stamford Riverside Festival saw people flocking in their thousands to the one day, not-for-profit festival, with an estimated 16,000 people going through the gates during the day, the small voluntary charge levied this year helped the organisers cover their debts going into the event. The sunshine topped it all off with revellers enjoying a day and evening of great entertainment and festivities. The standard of music was excellent with over 40 acts including The Gangsters, The Supported by Houndogs, The Surgens and Opaque having the crowds up and dancing. This year’s festival also included a new Busker’s Stage that attracted some cracking performances around the bar. Highlights for the festival though had to be Gabbidon, whose roots/reggae was the perfect backdrop to the explosive fireworks finale. As well as the music there was also some great entertainment from Bill Brookman’s Circus, who treated the crowds to some fire juggling. Art-Tastik provided a free rockstar kid’s workshop and Ted Taylor’s traditional funfair gave another dimension of entertainment for the little-uns! For me, this felt like the most successful Riverside Festival so far! The decision this year not to allow alcohol onto the site proved very successful and gave the festival a much better ‘family friendly’ feel, with no teenagers walking around with cans of beer. The 200ft long bar added to the festival’s financial success, generating much needed income. Festival spokesman Martin Smith summed up the day by telling me - “This was the best festival we’ve organised. It was chilled, safe and offered an outstanding array of entertainment. We feel confident now that we can work with our audience and partners to create a sustainable event to serve the region for years to come.” That’s where you come in – join the Riverside Friends scheme and help keep this fantastic festival going. You can put in whatever you can afford so it all helps! Go on… if you want to secure its return another year throw a little dosh their way – even the price of a round of drinks will help! COLUMN Andy
Slater andy.slater@espmag.co.uk
It’s August, it’s sunny and warm… (well it might be) and the festival season trundles along like an 18 wheeler on a Mississippi back road, bumping and groaning and howling through the long summer days. With lots of acts from the local area interspersed with talent from around the country there are far too many acts to mention. Suffice to say just about every genre is covered, Hip Hop to Folk, Indie to Dub and everywhere in between.
Me? I’m not yet weary, with several weekends behind us, I’ve met and had fun with some great people, seen some great bands and drunk far too much moonshine for my own good. I should know better! Last month we went up to Newark to the Americana Festival, not really a festival but a celebration of all the good things about America, stop it… there are lots of good things about America, it’s just their foreign policy that sucks! Anyway back to Americana. The sound of kick-ass Rockabilly bands slapping out great tunes at dusk whilst watching 1950’s V8 Cadillacs rumble past you, is an awesome feeling. Talk about take you to another place, even the not so car mad Tracy had a tear in her eye. If it’s Rock ‘n’ Roll and chrome covered cars that float your boat then I can say without fear of reprisal, you will love Americana so check it out next year guys. Having managed to avoid all the overgrown, commercial festivals this year but missed a couple of more homely types, I’m really looking forward to the Grassrooots Festival in early September. Over at The Plough at Farcet Fen the Muddy Promotions team have put together an event which is true to the music and arts that will entertain you there. The team have nine stages in the offing this year with everything from Rock and Indie, dance, comedy, poetry, healing and the ever romantic troubadour.

However, probably more important in the grand scheme of this festival is the community, this festival is about enjoying the whole experience, get away from life’s drudges for a while and enjoy an altogether more spiritual weekend. That may sound all a bit tree huggy but festivals like this are a great place to go, relax, see people in a different light and come back a calmer person. Check out the website www.thegrassrootsfestival.co.uk for more info and band line-ups. The tickets for the weekend, September 5 - 7 are a miserly £30, cheaper than camping three nights at Ferry Meadows! It’s an event that should finish the summer season off wonderfully. However, before we finish don’t forget that the same team are supporting Peterborough City Council’s City Roots Festival on the Embankment on the weekend of August 2 - 3. Again loads of great bands, arts and entertainment. This time the tickets are an even more miserly £10! Come on people… what’s stopping you? Two days of entertainment for a tenner. Go to www.cityroots.co.uk for all the info. Finally I’ll see you down at the Randall Rootz Festival on the weekend of August 15 -17 which is gonna be cracking. If you go to it one day you’ll be helping a great cause in Sue Ryder. May I recommend, Sunday afternoon, 4pm Ezio… quite probably solo. This does not happen very often, yes I said SOLO! Another website for all you surfers out there, www.randallroorz.org - my, my, we’re all sooooo technical these days! Have fun, stay safe and don’t do anything that an insane person wouldn’t do…

KERRY’S ON TRACK FOR A GREAT NIGHT OUT!
How often do you go for a really exciting night out and stand a chance of coming home with more dosh than you went with? Well Kerry rounded up a few friends and enjoyed a cracking night down at the dogs, betting and dining in the Raceview Restaurant. It was another one of the fabulous prizes she’s received since winning the Face of ESP. Kerry of course was given the star treatment – “I took some of my friends and Chris' family came as well - they loved it! “I was taken up into the commentator’s box and saw a race from up there, it’s a very different

view so it was quite exciting. I also got to speak on the tanoy... always trying to be the centre of attention me!”
www.peterboroughgreyhounds.com for full info on all the great packages on offer, or to book online.
Andy Barham, manager of the Greyhound Stadium told ESP - “It was a pleasure to entertain Kerry and her mates, they were a very friendly bunch. They all seemed to have a great time. For some it was their first visit to a Greyhound Stadium, I think they were pleasantly surprised at what good fun it was and what an exciting atmosphere envelops the place. I think a few went home with a little more cash than they arrived with!”
There’s a mid-week special in the restaurant – a two-course meal for just £13 with free entry and race programme when pre-booked and pre-paid, and the Six Pack deal from just £10 per person for groups of ten or more. That includes entry, race programme, two drinks, two £1 tote bets and a basket meal – bargain! The group organiser also gets a free meal for two in the restaurant for a future date of their choice (T&C’s apply).
If you’ve never been along to a night at the dogs we can tell you it’s easy to do so you don’t have to be a betting expert, you can drink and dine and watch all the action undercover. It’s ideal for a party or a works do and if you go along mid-week it’s definitely more exciting than watching the soaps and getting an early night! “We’re well aware that everyone’s tightening their belts,” Andy told ESP “so we make every effort to make Peterborough Greyhound Stadium the ideal choice for a fun and affordable night out, with packages to suit every age group and budget.” If you fancy giving it a try, just log on to www.esp3.net and download our reader vouchers which give you free admission and a pint or a spirit and mixer for just 1p – it doesn’t get cheaper than that! “It was a brilliant night,” added Kerry. “All the girls went onto the track and had photos taken which was lots of fun. Everyone really enjoyed their time there, so thank you to all the Greyhound Stadium staff!”

ENGLAND HEADING TO LONDON ROAD
Peterborough United have added two new signings to the squad ahead of the new Coca-Cola League One season with Sergio Torres the latest to agree a deal with the club. The Argentinean has put pen to paper on a three-year contract at London Road after passing a medical. Posh will pay a fee in the region of £200,000 for the 27 year-old, although a fee’s been included in that figure for Russell Martin. Torres, who missed the majority of pre-season with a foot injury, told ESP he can’t wait to get started. “This is a new challenge for me and one I’m really looking forward to. It was really sad for me to leave Wycombe because I’d four really happy years there, but I want to play at the highest level I can and this move

is a good one for me. Wycombe were fantastic to me, the management, team-mates and the supporters were so nice and I really wish them well in the future. “I’m happy to be at Peterborough. I’ve had a look around the stadium and spoke to Darren Ferguson and everyone’s made me feel really welcome. I’ve spoken to Russell Martin who I’m good friends with and he had plenty of positive things to say about the club. ‘I’m a player who always gives 100% and I’ve worked extremely hard on the defensive side of my game in the last two years. I like to run with the ball though, I like to get forward and do some tricks in the right area of the field. I believe I have joined a club moving forward.”
The core of the England squad will be made up of last season's successful U16s team which won the home nation’s Victory Shield competition on Sky Sports. John Peacock, manager of the England U17s told ESP he’s looking forward to seeing his squad in match action – “The tournament’s a nice start to the season and gives the players some match experience at a new age group. It‘ll obviously be a learning curve for everyone involved but that's what these tournaments are all about." Charter Standard clubs and schools can claim a maximum of 30 free tickets while group bookings of 15 or more means you can watch England U17s for just 50p.

SCENE
OUT THIS MONTH
ESP’s Tony Stephens takes a look at what’s hot on the big and small screen this month…
THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR Out: Aug 8
The first Mummy was never in the same league as Indiana Jones, but did a good job of mixing similar adventuring with a horror element, and turned out to be quite a fun movie. The sequel was pretty bad though, and put me off the idea of seeing another installment, and may even be why lead actress Rachel Weisz hasn’t returned this time. Instead Maria Bello takes her place alongside old hands Brendan Fraser and John Hannah. And there are even more absentees in the shape of both the Mummy and the Egyptian setting. Eh? Well, it seems that this time our heroes will go up against a resurrected Chinese emperor (Jet Li) and his terracotta army. Yes, the well of ideas really has run dry.
DVD SCENE IN BRUGES
Out: Aug 11 Two hit-men from Dublin (Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson) hide out in Bruges after a job goes horribly wrong. Whilst hoping that things might cool down back home the two try to enjoy their new surroundings, though they would really rather be anywhere else. But surely Bruges is the last place anyone would think to look for them?
SON OF RAMBOW
Out: Aug 11 Will Proudfoot is forbidden from watching TV (among many of the other things kids want to do) and Lee Carter specialises in producing pirate copies of movies. When Lee shows Will the original Rambo film, First Blood, they’re both inspired to make their own action movie. Will has a vivid imagination and with his new friend finds an outlet for his creativity. Of course, his parents do not approve, and nor does much of the local community when their ambitious stunt work gets them into all sorts of trouble.
GAME ON STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS Out: Aug 15
The Clone Wars are often referred to in the Star Wars movies, but have only really been explored in alternative media such as comic books and videogames. Now cinema goers will be able to see what all that fuss is about in this feature length CGI cartoon designed to launch a TV series. There has already been a cartoon series with the same name, covering the same time period, but obviously it wasn’t enough for George Lucas. Let’s hope this one is good enough to justify its no doubt massive production cost.
SOUL CALIBUR IV
(XBOX 360/PS3) Out: Aug 1 Probably the best one-on-one weapons based fighting series, Soul Calibur has built its reputation on a fighting system that is as deep as it is accessible, tons of weapons to unlock, different modes to get stuck into, beautiful animation and detailed graphics, and an epic soundtrack. In more recent years we’ve come to expect cool bonus characters too. The PS3 version of Soul Calibur IV allows you to fight as Darth Vader, whereas the 360 version features everyone’s 2nd favourite green muppet, Yoda (yeah, Kermit would have been way cooler).
TOO HUMAN SOMERS TOWN Out: Jul 22
Shane Meadows, the director of the best British films in recent years (A Room For Romeo Brass, Dead Man’s Shoes) is back with a coming-of-age drama that is slightly more light hearted than is usual for him, although there’s bound to be an element of tragedy in there somewhere, no doubt along with the usual acoustic guitar soundtrack. Thomas Turgoose, who won a ‘Most Promising Newcomer’ BAFTA for starring in Meadows’ last film This Is England, is back here too, as a 15 year-old from the midlands who befriends a Polish boy his age (Piotr Jagiello) in the area of London the film takes its title from.

(XBOX 360) Out: Aug 29 This was supposed to have been released years ago, way back on the first Playstation. Then for a while it was expected to be released for the Gamecube, but it never materialised. Now finally it’s ‘definitely’ coming to the Xbox 360. Only took ‘em (nearly) ten years. Just make sure that when (or if) you buy the game that there’s an actual disc inside the case, and not an I.O.U. Hilariously, this is supposed to be the first installment of a trilogy, but I think all our thumbs will have succumbed to arthritis long before we can expect to see a sequel on shop shelves. (Release dates are subject to change.)
