DAVID HEADS FOR THE EASTEND Local actor David Proud from Whittlesey is set to be our latest TV celeb as he joins the cast of EastEnders. The disabled actor is currently filming for the soap and will star as new character Adam Best. David’s already appeared on TV in CBBC's Desperados and in ITV2's Secret Diary of a Call Girl series two and will make his debut in the soap later this year. This is his biggest break yet and David can’t wait – "I’m delighted and honoured to be joining such a talented cast. I'm very excited and looking forward to bringing the character to life." Executive Producer of EastEnders, Diederick Santer said – "I'm delighted to welcome David to EastEnders. He's a fine young actor with a wonderfully dry comic delivery, playing an interesting – and possibly rather irritating – character. I'm sure he, and his character Adam, will be strong additions to EastEnders.
Skins has been running on Channel 4 recently putting the focus back on Luke as skateboarder Freddie, not that he’s left the limelight in Peterborough with everyone still queuing for pictures everywhere he goes! The fourth series will air early next year and Luke told ESP – “It’s coming back bigger and better than before!” We can’t wait.
RUDDY DUCK BEER FEST It’s beer festival month and wherever you go you’ll find real ales to sample. The Ruddy Duck pub in Peakirk is running its own mini beer festival so if you fancy a more intimate venue head there on Saturday August 22. There’ll be some truly fine live music too with the wonderful One Eyed Cats and Matt Zilch (ESP’s Stamford reporter in his other guise!)
RIGBYS BEER FEST Rigby’s on the market place in Market Deeping is also getting into the beer festival spirit and the guys there hold their second event from August 7 – 9. There’ll be over 20 real ales to sample so you can use it as a warm up to the big event on the embankment at the end of August!

It's about time." We’re told David’s character Adam Best is an Oxford University student who arrives in Walford to visit his mother, Manda, during his holidays. He’s a tad self-possessed and a bit of a snob, thinking his mum's boyfriend Minty isn't good enough for her. In fact, the only thing Adam does like about Albert Square is Libby Fox!
LUKE IS BACK BEHIND THE LENS Peterborough’s TV star Luke Pasqualino is back on set filming his second series of Skins. He also has some other appearances planned, some of which are hush hush, but we can tell you he’ll be appearing in the Miranda Hart show around October time.

HGs will re-open as The Grapevine on August 3, although apparently they’ve had a bit of trouble getting planning permission to replace the sign on the listed building! The landlord will be Sharpey, formally of The Solstice, and he’s aiming to create a traditional pub with live music and a jukebox full of rock classics.
STEP TOWARDS STARDOM If you know any youngsters that fancy themselves as the next Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie, get them to the Cresset on weekdays between August 3 – 21, where Peterboroughborn but nationally successful actress Charlotte Chinn will be leading a summer school every week, which culminates in a live performance in front of a real audience. Open to anyone aged between 9 and 15, whether they’re beginners or practically professionals, it’s a great chance to have fun, make new friends and build up self-confidence, as well as develop drama skills. One week costs £90, two weeks cost £160 and this year, there’ll also be a breakfast club so you can drop your future stars off before work and still ensure they’re properly fed – for just £15 extra. We’ll be out talent spotting in Serpentine Green shopping centre on Saturday August 15 so look out for the ESP team from 11am – 3am. It’s an opportunity for you to find out more about what the competition involves, ask any questions and also to enter on the spot. We’re looking for a girl who has that magic something and can represent the spirit of ESP Magazine for a full twelve months. You must be 18 by the time of the finals night on Friday September 11. BOGARTS BECOMES THE OSTRICH At long last, The Ostrich, the pub formally known as Bogarts will open its doors to the public on August 22 with live music and real ales. Tuesday nights will be a pre-New York New York disco and Saturdays will be dedicated to live music – so far, they’ve got Storm booked for August 29, Retrolux for August 30 and Citizen Smith for September. The whole place has been refurbished, so the grime has definitely gone, but the new landlords are aiming to keep a similar, music-friendly vibe.
WOMEN GET IN GEAR AT PEUGEOUT We hear a car confidence course for ladies held at Peugeot in Peterborough recently went down a storm and others could be planned soon. The Women in Gear event at the Tyrell Park showroom was a self-help course organised by the Marshall team to help teach local women drivers the basics of mechanics and personal self-protection. It included roadside get-you-home tips, defensive driving and how to ward off a possible ‘road rage’ attacker with Karate instructor and self-protection specialist Grant Hicks. After learning to change a car’s wheel the ladies were given practical advice including dealing with roadside emergencies, routine car maintenance and checking oil and fluid levels.
ROCK COUTURE OPENS AT SPRINGFIELDS We’re loving news of more shops at Springfields outlet centre in Spalding because it means great fashion at great prices. If you’ve not checked it out yet get down there and you’ll find loads of stores with up to 60% off! VERVE BECOMES RESTAURANT We were sad to see Verve shut again on Church Street however, it does apparently mean the city centre will get a new restaurant in the form of Chimichanga. Part of the Prezzo chain, this is a Mexican restaurant chain with freshly prepared traditional food from dishes to nibble and share through to three-course meals as well as an extensive range of cocktails. Sounds like a great addition to the city scene – we’ll keep you posted.
HYDROSPHERE AT FERRY MEADOWS How cool is this?! This fantastic Hydrosphere means you can now walk on water at Ferry Meadows. If you’ve seen Zorbing then you’ll be familiar with the idea. Think of a hamster in an exercise ball but make it much larger and of soft plastic, big enough for a human to run in and you’ve got it. Hydrosphere will be operating daily, weather permitting, on Lynch Lake from now until September 6, 11am to 5pm. It costs £3 for a 3-4 minute session in the Hydrosphere and anyone over the age of 3yrs can have a go after going through a few basic checks with the site staff. For more info call 07842 102442.
SPRINGFIELDS GOES GLOBAL The Spalding based outlet shopping centre will be bringing you flavours of the world throughout this month. On August 8 - 9 it’s the Italian Job, with pizza chef Stefano cooking up some treats on the Saturday and a Pavarotti lookalike wowing visitors on the Sunday and classic mini cars on both days. Then it’s time take a trip Down Under with the Go Walkabout in Australia weekend on August 15 - 16 with a baby crocodile, snakes, lizards and a wallaby or kangaroo on the Saturday, and a Rolf Harris lookalike on the Sunday. It’s back to Blighty with a Best of British on August 22 - 23 when visitors will be transported back to the 1940s and 1950s with folk dancers and a comedy spitfire pilot on Saturday, a Captain Mainwaring lookalike on Sunday, plus the Cinque Port Lindy Hoppers will be performing both days. Finally the bank holiday weekend takes on an Out of Africa theme with tribal stilt walkers on the Saturday, music workshop on the Sunday and a steel band duo on Saturday and Monday. SWIM TEAM NEEDS SUPPORT The Peterborough Special Olympic Swimming Club team is competing once again in an Olympic style competition for learning disabled athletes. It costs £3,000 to send the team to the competition every four years so they’re always looking for more support. They’ve been fundraising themselves but still need donations or sponsorship – £300 would send one swimmer to the competition. RENT @ THE KEY Based on Puccini’s La Boheme, Rent is a much-loved musical about a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to live and work in New York’s Lower East Side. ELO WON’T BRING YOU DOWN
Rising R’n’B group Filthy Halos will be bringing their brand-new show to the Key Theatre on August 15 – all fans of smooth, summery R’n’B should head down to hear songs from their forthcoming debut album. From Cambridge, Filthy Halos were spotted by a producer and promoter and have since been working hard in the studio, producing tracks and are now starting to tour to get their name out there – recently they supported Jo O’Meara of S Club fame, Tickets £10. Relive the days of rock legends, lightshows and massive hair when Essential Light Orchestra bring their tribute to ELO to the Stamford Corn Exchange on August 15. One of the biggest prog-influenced acts of the 70s and early 80s, ELO had scores of hits across the globe – you probably know songs such as Mr Blue Sky, Turn To Stone, Living Thing, Don’t Bring Me Down and Hold On Tight. BORO’S GOT SOUL! Peterborough’s always been a soul city and the music’s popularity here has never died. Soul fans keen to relieve the glory days will be pleased to hear that soul and Motown returns to the Cresset in Bretton on September 4 bringing together some of the best DJs playing out all the classics. There’ll be two rooms, one playing northern soul with Ian Gee, Paul Donnelly, Andy Smith and Ady Bull behind the turntables. In room two it’s soul and Motown with Ian Gray from the BBC Radio Cambridgeshire Soul Show (pictured) John Bradley and Malcolm James. Special guests on the night are Steve Gutteridge and Martin Topley and together they’ll all have you dancing from 8pm through ’til 1am. SINGING FOR THEIR SUPPER Come see Peterborough’s future stars in action at West End Summer Nights on August 5, a concert of song from shows like Mamma Mia, Blood Brothers and Chicago, as well as newer shows you might not have seen yet. Organised in conjunction with The Derek Killeen Trust, the show at the Key Theatre is all to raise funds for Peterborough kids such as Elizabeth Watts, a KYT regular who’s off to study Performing Arts at the prestigious Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. A fantastic event makes a return to the city on July 30 when Lava Lamp touches down at Pulse8 on Geneva Street. The Lava Lamp nights were set up in 2006 by Vincenzo Petruzziello who came up with the idea of a club night organised by adults with disabilities, for adults with disabilities. Vincenzo believed it was just what Peterborough needed and is the only event held of its kind held in an actual nightclub! The first club night took place back in 2007 and was such a success there have since been five more. One of the main aims of Lava Lamp is to provide a safe environment in which adults with disabilities can relax and enjoy themselves. The event’s a great opportunity for everyone to meet new people and make new friends. Before each event there are DJ workshops and stewarding workshops and it runs from 8pm until 1am. Pulse8 Manager, Aigars, has kindly offered the venue free of charge for this event and Vincenzo told ESP – “His generosity has enabled us to move forward with the Lava Lamp events and we’re sure that it’ll be a very popular venue! I’d like to say a huge thank you to Aigars as Lava Lamp relies on many volunteers and helpers to make the night happen, for which we’re all really grateful.

THE DREADED MODULE ONE? Most bikers who've taken their motorcycle test in the last few months will tell you there's now two parts to it. Pass them both and the examiner will hand you a pass certificate. Up until earlier this year a full bike test was done on the road – and it was on the road where you'd be asked to complete moves such as the U-turn and emergency stop. But now manoeuvres like these and the well documented 'swerve' are done during the Module One part of your test at the motorcycle test centre in Fengate. Basically, you can't take part two of the test (a 45 minute ride) until you've passed Module One. And at first glance this part of the test can appear pretty daunting. This was my final lesson before test day and luckily for me it was a Saturday, which meant I was able to try out Module One at the test centre where I'll be doing it for real next month. CAM Rider offers slots for learners to familiarise themselves with what's required for Module One on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. I can’t emphasise just how crucial it is to get a go at the test centre before the big day. The area you take Module One on is about the size of a football pitch and it's littered with different coloured traffic cones. Here you must: • Demonstrate you can push your bike a short distance and park it safely. • Complete a slow 'figure of eight' several times without putting your foot down. • Accelerate around a bend in second gear and swerve between two cones at no less than 50 kilometres per hour before coming to a swift halt and parking between two cones. • Take the same bend in the same way (without the swerve) and perform an emergency stop, maintaining control of the bike throughout. • Perform a U-turn inside the set parameters (average road width) without putting your foot down. • Slow ride just behind the examiner (walking). All of this sounds quite tough – and it would’ve been if the opportunity of trying out at the centre passed me by. My instructor was fantastic in breaking down each segment of the course, which included top advice on how to tackle the swerve manoeuvre. This part of the test has caused controversy from the offset with instructors calling it dangerous following several incidents of riders coming off their bikes in the wet and breaking limbs. Luckily for me the surface was dry and luckily for me I was given a comprehensive guide on how to successfully complete it wet or dry. There was a knack and I'd nailed it. There was plenty of time to do four practice runs of the test and with one lesson left to go (the morning of my test) I was feeling confident. Next month is the big day... BOURNE’S NEW LOFT INSTALLATION Popped into Bourne for a quickie (Guinness that is) and word is the Loft Club (and Nags Head) are set to reopen following a fire. Until it does, its resident DJs continue to play at The Red Lion and Angel Hotel cocktail bar. There's a new management team at The Angel too, hopefully they won't put a stop to those delicious homemade cakes they do there. Another new face can be found at The Jubilee with manager Ross (formerly of The Periwig in Stammy) taking over the reins. Who said nothing ever happens in small towns?!
ANYONE FOR OSTRICH? The opening and closing bar merry-go-round continues in the city centre and with it comes good and bad news. Good news first is the return of The Ostrich Inn (formerly Bogarts) which is set to open on August 22. Former Comet manager Jacqui Dean is at the helm and she brings live music, open mic nights, karaoke and quiz nights plus a selection of real ales and lunchtime grub to the venue. Not so good news is the closure of Bar Bloc, although good news is it may resurface at another location before too long. Verve has also had its day but good news for food lovers is it'll eventually be transformed into a new Mexican restaurant called Chimichanga, which is owned by the Prezzo group. Bad news is The Bar continues to gather dust and to be honest I'm not interested in hearing any more frustrating rumours of it reopening unless I plan to do it myself! And there's still no news on whether or not Praise will be reborn following the fire which forced it to close. My bet is it'll stay closed and miserable like The Bar, Bar Bloc and 5th Avenue. Chances are there'll be a couple more venues joining them before the year's out. I'm not usually one to be so negative but I can't see any solutions to keeping struggling operators open. If anyone reading has, then I'd be keen to hear from you at pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk But to end on some good news, The Solstice is running a £2 drinks promotion all day, every day on Fosters, John Smiths, WKD, vodka and Red Bull and glasses of wine. Ear splitting screams and hundreds of girls packed into HMV… that’ll mean JLS are back in town!
Peterborough’s number one guy, Aston Merrygold has been downing the champagne after hitting the top of the charts with his band mates from JLS. The guys told ESP after the news broke – "We’re a boy band who’ve gone straight to No.1. It’s a big statement but that is what we are. We have got a few bottles of champagne. We'll wake up with sore heads but it is well deserved because we’ve worked so hard over the last two years. It's amazing. "We want a great album and to tour and have longevity as an act. We want this to be a career, to have album after album, hit after hit." It’s hard to believe that just a few days before storming the charts with debut hit ‘Beat Again’, Aston, a former Jack Hunt School pupil still couldn’t get over the fact he was at his own CD signing in his home town, so being number one would certainly have floored him. ESP caught up with JLS behind the scenes of the Queensgate music store. Clearly humbled by the sheer number of fans who’d waited hours and hours to meet him and the band, Aston looked like he couldn’t quite believe any of it. “I always used to go to HMV and now I’ve come back as someone in the industry… it’s all a bit crazy!” JLS have broken every boy band rule by being involved in every aspect of the creative process as they put the finishing touches to their debut album which is coming soon, but still the assumption for many is that they’re just another manufactured

group because of their arrival on the scene through the TV show.
Marvin told us. “We’ve had an amazing day today.”
Aston was keen to put the doubters straight – “It doesn’t work like that. When you go into X Factor everyone would assume you’re a manufactured band but we were together a year before X Factor, trying hard. We had managers before that, other projects, loads of stuff going on but obviously now it has paid off. We’ve got ourselves a fantastic record company and management, they’re supplying us with the greatest producers in the world and we’re just very lucky to be here.”
It was all a bit overwhelming for the fans too, especially 14 year-old Kirstie Shrimplin who’d travelled down from Co. Durham!
All the guys recognise they’ve been lucky enough to have such an opportunity – “We have to pinch ourselves every day,” Oritsé told us. “We wake up and we do something we love to do every day, it doesn’t feel like a job it just feels like fun.” Laughter broke out when we enquired which one gets the most fan mail with the guys furiously pointing at Aston (who still looks pretty embarrassed) before Marvin says – “Aston is Peterborough’s prodigal son – he gets the most fan mail!” Then he added with a grin – “Well, we all get our fair share of attention though I guess!” While the guys admit they’re not short of female attention now, they say finding a ‘special’ lady won’t be quite so easy. JB admits they weren’t exactly ignored at school though – “It wasn’t on a plate or anything but everybody showed a little bit of love, I was alright at school…”

I did go to see my first favourite band Oasis in concert at Wembley and drank so much that I can’t really remember it (damn those free bars!) Although I can remember them being superb! At least I have a holiday to look forward to this month - the first proper one for about two years I think! Also looking forward to playing at The Woodstock festival at the end of July in Poland with Conflict. The festival is the biggest festival in Europe (probably because it’s free!) PASTY SHOP OPENS IN TOWN! At last! A new shop has opened in town that doesn’t sell mobile phones! The High Street does seem to be getting overrun with new phone shops. Haven’t people already got plenty of phones? Anyway rant over, I’ve noticed a very cool looking new pasty shop opening on the High Street and checked out the menu and it looks like there’ll be a good range on offer. I even saw a good few vegetarian options up on the board!
THE CORN EXCHANGE CELEBRATES It’s a year since The Corn Exchange started its professional programme. The full time theatre programme was launched with professional acts and amateur and community groups performing in the theatre every week. Theatre manager Judith Mackie told ESP she’s delighted with the progress and popularity of the theatre – "We’re attracting people from all over, our autumn programme includes Elkie Brooks, Journey South, Cara Dillon and Beverley Craven. We have some fantastic big production shows coming in starting with 'Pop Goes the Eighties' in September, consisting of 16 West End performers with 24 costume changes! We also have The Hamsters and Black Ram Theatre Company with the classic ‘One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest’ and more to come.” It’s great to see all their hard work paying off, so if you haven’t dropped by yet don’t leave it too long.
HIT OR MISS NIGHTS Good to see that the Hit or Miss has a great month of live entertainment planned to make your summer a little more entertaining. It starts with The Hit or Miss Biker Day on August 1 with live music from The Les Woods Band at 12pm and The Vintage Rock Company at 3pm. There’ll be a BBQ and loads of bikes and it starts at 11am. Later on in the month there’s live music from classic rockers Zarakan on August 8, rock and blues band Feet to the Fire on August 14, then there’s music from the great Status Quo with the tribute band Spare Parts on August 21! RIVERSIDE REVIEW It was a great day down at the Riverside Festival as you’ll see in this month’s Paparazzi. I arrived later than I’d planned as I was still recovering from a superb gig at the Toreador the night before with the band, plus the ESP girls had taken the wrong turn and were running late… but hey, I’ll let ’em off! Even so, I still managed to see plenty of the great bands on, including White Clouds and Gun Fire, Cute Looney and Portman, to name a few! I also appreciated the great prices on the beer and the choice. Early indications show the festival broke lots of records for all sorts of reasons – weather, crowd numbers and donations received and although it went brilliantly the organisers are still predicting the event will have run at a loss! I think the donation buckets for admission at the gates were a great idea, but I think the festival is still in need of more sponsors and more backing. So come on, if anyone has any ideas or would like to stage any events to raise money for next year’s festival give me a shout on matt.zilch@espmag.co.uk

Davina McCall is backing a campaign for us all to do a ‘welly’ good thing and wear our wellies to work on September 18. In aid of Action Medical Research (who fund research into diseases which affect babies and children) the idea is that we all donate £2 and wear our wellies to work on that Friday. And I for one think it’s a great idea! I’m sure everyone in the ESP office will be up for a giggle (any excuse to dress up – and that’s just the fellas!) and don their best rubber footwear (steady!) to join in the fun – the only problem is I can foresee some serious cases of ‘welly envy’ affecting office bonhomie! Susan Saunders is bound to find the pinkest, sparkliest most fabulous wellies this side of a Young Farmers’ convention at G-A-Y; I can see Claire, our reigning Face of ESP, arriving in something super stylish like Ugg wellies or cowboy wellies or wedge-heeled wellies (ooh, I’m getting excited at the thought – maybe I should get into welly design?!); I’ve got a lovely white pair with yellow and pink flowers on – not especially exciting but they still have splodges of Glastonbury mud caked on the sole so I figure they’ve earned their place. After arriving by helicopter at Hampton College the Princess, who’s Commandant-in-Chief of St John Ambulance, officially opened the National Distribution Centre in Bretton. Then, in her role as Patron of the National Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux (CAB), she officially opened the new CAB centre in St Marks Street before finally, in her role as President of Victim Support, travelled to Hampton police station to open the Cambridgeshire Victim Care Unit. Phew, I didn’t realise she had so many jobs, no wonder she never has the time to get a new hair-do.

Turning over a new leaf! The great British cuppa has been ‘our’ drink for a few centuries now, but with the explosion of coffee shops around us maybe we Brits are not drinking as much as we once did. IT’S MY PARTY AND I’LL CRY (UP A MOUNTAIN) IF I WANT TO… When you think of birthdays, you perhaps also think of parties, alcohol and mates to go hand in hand with your birthday festivities. Fun, relaxation and frivolities are normal… but are pain, 18 hours of exercise and sheep? Wanting to achieve something big before my next birthday, I thought it would be a good idea to do something momentous. The pledge I set myself was to do, what I thought was, a spot of walking in the beautiful countryside by undertaking the charity Three Peaks Challenge. My expectations weren’t wrong, there was just a spot of walking… sandwiched between hours of Ray Mears’ worthy trekking, mountain climbing, muscle-straining, hole-in-your-head ‘fun’. Anyway, on what should’ve been my birthday celebration (the weekend before my birthday) with plenty of drinks and banter from friends, I was climbing Mount Everest… well OK, Snowdon (Wales), Scafell Pike (England) and Ben Nevis (Scotland) in just over a day. As my training regime had failed miserably, to try and ensure I was prepared for anything (Dib Dab Dob and all that, as Tawny Owl taught me in the Girl Guides) I decided to buy myself the ‘best’ kit. So I of cooooourse had to buy a fab pink waterproof jacket, along with a matching head band. Did I want skiing gloves? No thank you – my leather ones go much better! It was my birthday after all – if I was going to face the elements, I wanted to look good in the process! So after a 4am start and a five hour mini bus journey, we were at the base of the first mountain – Snowdon, supposedly the easiest of the three. After torrential rain, trudging through streams that resembled rivers and nearly being blown off the peak by a 70mph wind storm I figured it couldn’t get any worse. That was until I needed to go to the ‘ladies’ on the side of a mountain. That was better! Now for pulling my waterproofs back on. They weren’t cooperating on account of my frozen fingers so I had to pull them off and then couldn’t get them back on properly. I had to walk the rest of the mountain with my bottom poking out of the top of them. Brilliant. Just brilliant.

Maybe the next mountain would be better. First two hours, so far so good. After reaching the peak at Scafell the four thousand litres of water I’d consumed made me need the ladies (side of the mountain) AGAIN! The guys waited as I ran off in the dark. Almost there now and… woooooaaahh! My big, un-mountain worthy derriere was falling fast as I slipped over on something squidgee. It had been raining after all so the grass was wet. No such luck – it was bl**dy sheep pooh. The same sheep I’d been saying hello to on the way up the mountain. Marvellous. The third mountain, Ben Nevis, went pretty well and my team (The A Team) worked very well together. A lovely leisurely stroll of four hours to the summit (pant, pant, wheeze, wheeeeeeeze!) me relying on them to pick me up after twenty girly whimpers of – “Please help me, I’m in pain!” – and them relying on me to sing them some tune to pick them up, or to speed them up if they didn’t want to hear me sing ONE MORE TIME! We reached the top in one piece and there was snow! I didn’t fall over, which was a nice surprise. I did however, feel like my fingers would drop off, victims to Mr Frostbite, inside my trendy black leather gloves that matched my pink jacket… Brilliant. I did however manage to hurtle down and finish 1st, which I was so happy about! This year for my birthday I don’t think I’ll get unmistakably drunk and stumble around in high heels, not I. For I have climbed a mountain and realised that whilst a birthday can be very much my day, sometimes a sense of achievement means far more. This lesson, I managed to learn as I stumbled down the mountain, grazed my legs, slipped in sheep pooh, lost my dignity and bared my slightly oversized derriere to the mountain and my unsuspecting team mates.

The officers do have to run the gauntlet of those with something to hide or who are picked out for a search they don’t want, but most people appreciate their efforts in trying to do something positive. Although it’s not always that easy as Sergeant James Sheffield, the man in charge of the operation, explained.
SNOW PATROL - meet the group keeping city nightlife drug free
Whether it’s snow, charlie, hash, skunk or too much booze it can be a recipe for trouble. ESP’s Mark Shaw takes a trip on the night shift with officers safeguarding our nights out… By 9.30pm on a Friday night most of us are kicking back, enjoying an alcoholic drink or two to welcome in the weekend. But for those of us crammed into a hot briefing room at Thorpe Wood police station, the only drink we want is cold water. Welcome to the night shift briefing, ahead of a summer night on the beat in Peterborough city centre. These guys (and girls) usually have more than enough to look forward to ensuring revellers out for a good night on the town aren’t troubled by those with a bad attitude or who’ve downed a few shots too many. Tonight though, is a bit different. Operation Bradford means visits to city centre clubs and bars looking for anyone with drugs. By the time we’ve reached our first port of call, the heavens have
opened. This means a warm welcome from the outdoor smokers for Star, the black Labrador on sniffing duty tonight, and the uniformed officers who follow him in, ready to carry out searches of anyone suspected of carrying drugs. There’s a keen interest in Star, who gently pokes his nose around each punter before moving on. Instead of being seen as a threat, most people welcome his novelty value. Three members of the team are on undercover ‘spotting’ duty, heading into each venue first to look for any potential suspects and those making a quick dart for the door. They just blend into the crowd, going about their business without even making eye contact with their uniformed colleagues.
“In this kind of operation my job is to speak to the pub owners and explain what we’re doing. All of them came up to me to thank me afterwards and said we’re welcome to come as often as we want. “Very occasionally you get difficulties with punters, but that’s quite often fuelled by drink. We just have to calm people down and tell them we’re doing the job that most people want us to do.” For the unit of 15 officers, Operation Bradford has provided the opportunity to do something different. None of this is possible without the ‘specials’, who put the hours in without pay and on top of their own jobs. Tonight they make up more than half of the team. Sergeant Sheffield knows their importance “The specials are an invaluable resource. I can’t emphasise how useful they are, operations like this would not be able to go ahead without them,” he said. One of the specials on duty is Dan Low, by day a supervisor at Tesco. “Whenever I have some free time I always try and put some hours in as I want to become a police officer,” the 21 year-old told me. “Doing this kind of shift puts the nightlife into a different perspective. You get to see the other side of it. It’s a real eye-opener!” Six bars, quite a few hours and a number of diversions later, the operation ends with some success. For ‘spotter’ PC Jemma Cooper, it’s a night to remember as it’s her debut in plain clothes. “It’s the variety, which is why I love this job,” she revealed afterwards. “It’s good to see a different side to the city and know we’re making a difference to the place where we live and work. It’s a good thing to re-assure the public we’re doing something about drugs.”

The field was packed, the tunes went on into the night followed by fireworks and a fabulous festival was had by all. There was a great choice of different music from rock to acoustic and some pretty talented buskers entertaining the beer tent crowds. WE’VE GONE TO THE DOGS It’s always a good night at Peterborough Greyhound Stadium but on a hot summer evening the dogs were given a night off while local people hit the track… in err… dog suits… The Human Greyhound Race, supported by ESP, helped raise over £3,000 for Sue Ryder Care and it was a howl! Employees from Stanground Fire Station, Bookers, Identity and Passport Services, Heart FM and a group of mates who got together to compete, bravely completed half a lap of the track dressed in dog costumes while punters placed their bets. In the end it was congratulations to Nick Jackson from Heart FM who really did ‘give it some heart’ and pounded his way to a clear win and became top dog of the event! “I really enjoyed running it, but to be in a dog suit on the hottest day of the year so far wasn’t much fun! The final was just after my heat so I had to lay down and throw a few bottles of water over me afterwards, but it was worth it to be crowned the fastest human dog of 2009!” The ESP Paparazzi crew saw Mike Harris behind the lens while Alannah, Nicole and Becca mingled with the crowds as they cheered on the winners. Raffles throughout June at The Greyhound Stadium helped boost the total and other sponsors including CBA Developments Limited contributed towards the total. She’s the hottest property on television and is about to become one of radio’s leading ladies; ESP’s Joanne Quinney finds out why Fearne Cotton is high on everyone’s radar… The blonde 27 year-old beauty who hails from London has the world at her feet right now. TV and radio presenter Fearne Cotton is about to permanently present BBC Radio 1’s mid-morning programme, taking over from long-time host Jo Whiley next month. But how did the rock chick get to this? Can you believe Fearne actually started her career at the tender age of 15 presenting GMTV’s early morning children’s programme The Disney Club and then later Diggit after she was discovered during a nationwide talent search. Since then she’s worked her way up through the ranks of CBBC to huge mainstream TV shows like ‘Top of the Pops’ as well as presenting everything from ‘Celebrity Love Island’ and the ‘X Factor’ ITV2 spin-off ‘Xtra Factor’ to being backstage at ‘The Brits’,’ Live 8’ and hosting ‘Children in Need’. This lady has truly made TV her home. Not to forget Fearne’s charity work; not only did she present several strands throughout Red Nose Day in 2009 but climbed Mount Kilimanjaro along with a team of celebs raising a whopping £3.3 million. In 2005 Fearne turned to radio and joined the Radio 1 team and in 2007 became the first ever female presenter to permanently present the Chart Show. Radio 1 has now announced that the bubbly Londoner will take over from Jo Whiley on the mid-morning show 10am 12.45pm, as part of a major shake up of the station’s weekday schedule. ‘The Live Lounge’, made famous under Jo Whiley’s guidance, continues in Fearne’s new show, bringing more live music than ever to the daytime. Current early breakfast presenter Greg James will be replacing Edith Bowman in the afternoon slot, adding games and gaming to the existing movie-related show.

But how does Fearne feel about this huge move? “I love being at Radio 1 and taking on a weekday show is a dream come true. Jo is leaving very big shoes for me to fill and it’s nerve wracking.” Jo has made a big impact so replacing her as she moves on to take up the weekend afternoon shows must surely be daunting? “Jo has been a massive inspiration to me throughout my career,” adds Fearne “so I have a high standard to live up to. The live music legacy will live on in the new show and I can’t wait to get started.” Everyone of course sings Fearne’s praises, Ben Cooper Deputy Controller at Radio 1 says - “This is our first big shakeup of the weekday schedule for over five years. Bringing Fearne to the daytime schedule is really thrilling for us as she has proven herself to be a great broadcaster in the time she has been at the station.” But how does Jo Whiley feel about her replacement? “After eight wonderful years the time has come to move on and give someone else the privilege of entertaining the nation on a daily basis. I think Fearne is fantastic and I couldn’t leave the show in a better pair of hands.” Fearne Cotton regularly appears in ‘best dressed’ lists alongside her best pal and fellow presenter Holly Willoughby, due to her quirky rock chick style. Not only is she becoming one of radio’s leading ladies but she is designing her own line of clothes. She’s one sought-after lady! However, where fame brings opportunity it also brings its dark side, as she recently received what were believed to be threatening text messages during her weekend show. A man was later arrested. But Fearne won’t let this get her down, her career is on an all time high and I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of her on our television screens in years to come. For now though, get ready to listen to her new show on the radio which starts on September 21.

Tel: 01733 391111 I never did quite understand why a rapper would want to call himself ‘50 Cent’ – surely it’s better to be a full dollar – but 50 PER CENT off at the Orton’s Ramblewood Inn (courtesy of ESP’s on-line voucher at www.espmag.co.uk) is well worth rapping on about. Needing a quick plateful meant that we took a trip down the road to this pub in the fantastic grounds of Orton Hall Hotel. All we needed to do was spend a minimum of 25 quid on food and the bill would be halved! There’s a decent choice of traditional English, along with some continental variations, such as pasta, but we both opted for good ‘ol steak and ale pie with new potatoes and veg, after a shared starter of hot ‘n’ garlicky bread. This pie oozes melt-in-your-mouth beef in a tasty gravy every time (yes, I’ve tried it before) and after that, we need to halve the dessert as well. Jam sponge and custard – mmm! Compliment all that with a pint or two from the decent real ale selection and some great rosé wine – what more could you ask for? Ian Gray

Fire fighting? What a load of rubbish! What’s the biggest misconception about firefighters? “That we sit around waiting for calls drinking tea – we’re flat out!” So says firefighter Farsh Raoufi from Dogsthorpe fire station. More than 3,500 calls are attended by Dogsthorpe crews each year ranging from horrific car accidents to birds stuck behind fireplaces! In between that there are school talks, community work, training, preventing suicide attempts and, of course, battling fires. Farsh and his team on Red Watch are a close knit bunch, enjoying a laugh in between dealing with incidents of every description that can stretch the nerves of any of them. During his 19 years of service Farsh has seen it all, but one of the most frustrating things is when he knows it could’ve been easily prevented. “So many incidents could be avoided if people just thought a little more and followed safety advice.” A prime example is wheelie bin fires – they may sound like a joke and hardly top of the major

incidents list, but when they’re left out, up close to the front of houses they’re an easy target. All too soon that bin fire can set a house ablaze with a smoke logged bedroom and a family potentially losing their lives… makes you think doesn’t it? Rubbish is a problem for all of us, but for Farsh and the firefighters in Peterborough it’s a big problem. Dumped rubbish, by people or companies is a dream for fire bugs, so if you spot any tell the council so it can be cleared away and you’ll be doing everyone a favour. Apart from the potential of any fire becoming more serious (even if it did just start in a manky mattress!) every time a fire engine’s called out it costs us all dosh, while they’re putting out a bin fire they could be needed at something more important, plus any fire damage just looks bad and the city’s image takes an instant dip. “You just need to report any fly tipping so it can be moved and stick your wheelie bin out of sight – it’s easy really,” says Farsh. “You’ve got to
remember that your rubbish is an arsonist’s fuel and it’s a pretty pathetic reason for someone to lose their life.” Farsh has attended plenty of near misses where they’ve stopped buildings going up in smoke after piles of dumped waste have been set alight, but he’s also seen his fair share of incidents that have become far more serious. “The most memorable things that stick in my mind aren’t the worst incidents but the personal touches – the ‘Thank you’ you get when you’ve made a difference or saved a life. I just wish they weren’t put in that position in the first place.” So give Farsh and the firefighters a break, don’t be lazy – stick your wheelie bin out of harm’s way. After all, if we help cut down on rubbish fires he might get time to slurp some of that tea everyone thinks he’s drinking!

ATTENTION SEEKER! Having owned a Fiesta years and years ago I couldn’t resist taking the new model for a spin for ESP, and in this hot magenta colour I certainly got noticed. Wow, how they’ve changed over the years – and I don’t just mean in the funky range of colours which really make the new models stand out. I was amazed it actually felt like a much bigger car with loads of space and dare I say it, a sporty feel. I know this particular colour is more girlie but don’t worry boys, Jeremy Clarkson put a funky green one through its paces on Top Gear and I do believe he stormed a beach with a bunch of soldiers, so you can still get the butch factor out of the new Fiesta! If you want to show some individuality and colour’s your thing there are certainly some fresh exteriors in this range, but me, I just prefer the plain white one. The Ford Fiesta Zetec has all the mod cons we’re so used to today like Bluetooth, air con and controls for the radio/MP3 on the steering wheel. At night we loved the ambient glow of red light on

the roof, glove box and centre console. It has such a neat and funky body shape, halogen headlights, boasts power operated door mirrors (selected models only) and as standard it has capless refuelling. That means no more dirty hands at the pumps girls, plus you can’t accidentally fill it up with the wrong fuel… not that we’d do that of course! During development the new Fiesta was certainly put through its paces – it was driven the equivalent of 87 times around the globe and exposed to extreme temperature over and over again – so it’s fair to say it should be pretty reliable. You can grab the new Fiesta from as little as £10,595 on the road but the model we had starts from £12,895. If you’ve already got a car and want to get yourself a new nippy little number, it’s worth talking to the guys at TC Harrison in Peterborough about the scrappage allowance in time for a new 59 plate in September. Not only was I impressed with this little gem but the editor ran off with it to take Claire - our Face of ESP - for a spin, and for once it wasn’t just Claire attracting the glances as she competed with this hot magenta model. As we celebrate our ten years in business we’re also celebrating ten local success stories. This month, ESP’s Rebecca Jane talks to number eight in our series, TV presenter Sarah Cawood… Sarah Cawood is in a car on the AI heading north from London. Today she’s heading to Luton airport to go on holiday, but it’s a stretch of road she knows really well because it’s the start of another journey she often takes – away from her hectic working life in the capital back to her hometown of Stamford. Originally Sarah’s family moved to Castor when she was about four and then to Maxey before sending her to Stamford School for Girls. Despite her career taking her to London she’s regularly back for shopping trips in Peterborough and to dine out in Stamford. So why did you move away when you were 17? Was it to get your career going? “I left to go to the Royal Ballet School in London, where I trained for three years before I started dancing for a living. Then I got into television. I only live in London now out of professional necessity, if I didn’t have to then I’d live in the area – ideally Stamford or in the adjoining villages because they’re all so pretty.” You’ve presented a huge variety of different TV shows – ladette culture in The Girlie Show; being a roving reporter for Richard and Judy; children’s shows such as Live and Kicking; guest slots on Big Brother’s Little Brother; and the winner of Celebrity Weakest Link 2007. Does being so versatile help you to get work? “No, I think that’s a real problem. They want to be able to box you into a niche. The ‘daytime’ people think I’m a bit too ‘evening entertainment’. If you’re Tess Daly you do family shows, but you’d never see her do a late night edgy show like I did The Girlie Show. Being versatile can be an albatross to be honest. It’s famously hard for children’s presenter’s to get out of children’s telly. I’ve yo-yo’d from children’s TV to The Girlie Show back to Live and Kicking for children. I got lucky I guess!” Didn’t presenting The Girlie Show get you a rep as a ladette? “I hated it! You ask anyone I went to Stamford School with and they’ll say I was a bit of a swot! I got my homework in on time and I was always well turned out. I so wasn’t the rebel that I was portrayed to be!” I saw you at Mama Liz’s a few months ago watching a band…
Where are your favourite local places? “Mama Liz’s of course… There’s a great Mexican restaurant in Peterborough, but I’ve forgotten its name… and The Burghley in Stamford tends to be a local for us. For rural areas… the second meadow in Stamford and also Southey Woods is really pretty. I went to Stamford Fair in March with my dad, and that was lovely.” They say there’s no place like home, but for you which place is the most similar to home? “You know what? Crouch End, where I live in London. I love it there. It’s like a small town and I’ve carved a little life for myself there that mirrors my life in Stamford. I know my dry cleaner’s name and I know all my neighbours. I think it was subconscious but deliberate.” Who’s the sexiest male presenter that you’ve worked with? Is it Eamon Holmes? “Ha ha, he does have a certain something! Everyone would say Steve Jones ¬– but I don’t think he is. He’s got too many teeth! I have to say… I did love Eamon, he is such a funny man. Yeah, let’s go with Eamon: the thinking woman’s crumpet! But my guilty pleasure, and I’ve never worked with him but I have the real, real hots for him, is Alan Hansen the Scottish guy that does Match of the Day. Ah man… he’s so fit!” If you could steal a TV show from another presenter and host it yourself which show would it be? “I’d like Loose Women and because I was a dancer I’d do Strictly Come Dancing. And I’d do it better than Tess Daly! Why? Because I haven’t got the accent for a start! But I know about dancing. I think when you have authority over your subject matter you always do a better job. A lot of those prime time jobs are just in front of an autocue so they’re not really that taxing, but if you want a really taxing job it would be to do what Kate Humble does. I think she’s an awesome TV presenter, no way is that autocued, she’s thinking on her feet.” If you were going for a gals night out in Stamford, where? “The Raj for an Indian.” … and for a romantic night with a man? “Oooh, The George, I love The George, I want to get married there!” Do you have a suitable candidate? “Hmmm, he hasn’t arrived yet, he’s stuck in traffic on his white charger!” How busy are you in the next couple of months? “I’m filming a travel show. We’ve just shot in London and the next one in Alsace in France. August is quiet, hence the holiday. And hopefully I’m setting up a production company with a friend of mine so I will start making programmes as well as fronting them.”

SCREENSCENE Tarantino does the Second World War in this unashamedly bloodsplattering fiction of a different kind. QT’s long-mooted war project finally sees the light of day, with the injection of A-lister Brad Pitt undoubtedly hoping to give him his first truly commercial box-office success since ‘Pulp Fiction’ (which is in my top three favourite movies of all-time). In this tale of Jewish retribution, Pitt’s Lt. Aldo Raine leads a group of mercenaries – including Tarantino’s director pal Eli Roth (‘Hostel’) and Diane Kruger (‘National Treasure’) – known to their enemy as ‘The Basterds’, in violently ruthless attacks on German targets in Nazioccupied France. After generally favourable, if unspectacular, reviews from the Cannes Festival screening, hinting at a movie that’s equally talky as it is actionladen, it remains to be seen if one of Hollywood’s most highly-regarded directors will put the financial misfire ‘Deathproof’ behind him, or whether this is one pet project too many…

With a tidy, if linear and intermittently dull, single-player campaign, you star in a predictably clichéd story as a trigger-happy, alien-hating, secret service agent – but it’s the well-rounded multiplayer game (which utilises Wii Speak) that takes Sega/High Voltage’s FPS to the next level.
As one of the very few first-person shooter exclusives, this has been tagged as the game to take the revolutionary console to the next level.
It won’t beat the likes of the excellent ‘Metroid Prime: Corruption’ – and if you have a X360 or PS3 it won’t worry the likes of ‘COD’, ‘Halo’ and ‘Bioshock’ – but this impressive effort, despite a few teething problems, is arguably the best pure shooter on Nintendo’s console.

INDIANA JONES & THE STAFF OF KINGS This is one of those games where you put a bunch of niggling problems aside, simply because it’s Indy.
‘Let’s Tap’ is noticeably a little on the thin side, but at around 20 quid it’s worth giving the gaming equivalent of Fred Astaire a go.
What do you get when you combine the new Wii MotionPlus with golf’s most famous player? Arguably the greatest golfing game of all-time. Nintendo’s new control system gets you as close as possible to a true-to-life golf swing with precise draw and fade capabilities, along with a much-improved putting system. With a plethora of worldrenowned courses, dynamic weather conditions and online tournaments, you can play as Tiger or other top golfing names. The X360/PS3 versions vastly improve on the Wii’s jagged up-close visuals (that should really be better), but all formats (including the PSP incarnation) have moved significantly in the right direction, despite still having some crowd atmosphere issues. But for me the immersive MotionPlus controls give Nintendo’s version the all important edge over its graphically-enhanced counterparts – and takes the franchise from a par to a birdie.

With the MotionPlus getting so much attention, one new control system that has slipped in under the radar is a worthwhile addition to the Wii party scene. This aesthetically pleasing – if initially bizarresounding – control mechanism of two boxes that register the strength of your Wii remote-tapping actually works extremely well throughout intriguing mini-games. The selection of games, which includes puzzle, rhythm, running and 2D scrolling shooter, are generally hit and miss, but due to its quirky nature it would be a noteworthy addition to anyone’s multiplayer collection.

Fanboy feedback for Indiana Jones’ latest adventure, which takes him to multiple world locales in search of the mythical Staff of Moses, has been far more forgiving for this title which also boasts the die-hard favourite ‘The Fate of Atlantis’. Yes, the graphics are only PS2 standard, yes, the overused whip-cracking controls are frustratingly hitand-miss, and yes, the co-op and multiplayer modes are crap – but the variety of the level designs and wealth of unlockables just about pulls it through. Factor in the obvious dosage of Indy nostalgia and fans should lap this up.
You’ve read about the ultimate golfing game – well the ‘Fight Night’ franchise has just done the same for boxing.
With jaw-dropping (or is that breaking?) graphics which shows every sweat-flying and cut-opening reaction to the faces of some of the greatest fighters of all time across all weight classes – Ali, Tyson, Frazier, Lewis, Hagler, Calzaghe, Hatton and Jones Jnr are all included – this is a nigh-on flawless arcade representation of the sport.
This needs very little explanation as this is the best boxing experience ever, bar none. Nothing even comes close.
If you’re ultra-picky ‘Fight Night 3’ fans may pick out a differing control system (which works great if you weren’t used to the

previous game) and Legacy Mode inaccuracies, but with great pacing and gaming mechanics, sublime slow motion and a fantastic create-a-boxer mode, this is a first class effort from top-to-bottom. Five star reviews are hard to come by on these pages, and as it doesn’t get the annual ‘cash cow’ treatment, in comparison to football, golf, tennis and wrestling games, it delivers a stand-out knockout blow that is simply champion.

I sent an email to PG Tips. Dear Mr Tips Following the death of the King of Pop, surely the time is right for his pet monkey, Bubbles to appear in an ad. I’ve re-written the lyrics of ‘Beat It’ to suit the occasion which I’m sure a Jacko sound-a-like could record. Maybe you could give Lenny Henry a call, we’re so bored of all those Premier Inn commercials. Anyway, here are the new lyrics. Let me know what you think…

ONLY FOOLS & ZOMBIES Last summer I got to meet film director John Landis who in the 80’s directed some of my favourite films – ‘Animal House’, ‘The Blues Brothers’, ‘American Werewolf in London’, ‘Trading Places’, ‘The Three Amigos’ and ‘Coming to America’. He’s been back in the news recently as he was also the director of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ video. Since the ‘King of Plastic Surgery’ passed away, the video’s been on non-stop on the music channels and Landis tells a great story about how the 13 minute video was the first to get a big Hollywood movie premiere "Everyone was there from Marlon Brando to Diana Ross and it got a standing ovation. People were yelling 'encore, encore' and I said 'Sorry there’s no encore!' Then Eddie Murphy got up and shouted – ‘Show the goddamn thing again!’ So they sat there and watched Thriller again.”

After a bit of travelling around of late, this month’s column will have a more local flavour to it, as two of the annual favourites take place in August, one of them with a big headline act. The team behind Randall Rootz (August 14 – 16) have pulled a real iron out the fire by getting The New Beautiful South to headline on the Friday night. A band that has sold 15 million albums playing the Brewery Tap has got to be a good thing and the band is looking forward to it. “We’ve passed through Peterborough before but we never played, it‘s our first time. It’s always good to play somewhere new,” singer Dave Hemingway told ESP. Far from being a big stadium gig like they used to play in the 90s Dave is acutely aware of the benefits of a more

Talking to the guys it’s clear that some of the older songs didn’t quite work with the new line-up but those lucky enough to have tickets should hear most of the classic hits as well as a few new tunes – “There’ll still be plenty of the songs to sing along to and we’ll be enjoying ourselves as much as you.” It bodes well for the festival. On the Saturday and Sunday over at Charters you have a massive amount of music to choose from, and it’s all free. Pick of the bands for me are Kissmet who play a very rare city gig and will be on about 9pm on Saturday. They are now regarded as one of the best festival circuit bands with their fusion of reggae / banghra / rock. If ever there was a band for a balmy summer night and the sky above your head, this is it. A festival band personified. Another good call, and a reason to be there at midday on Saturday (it’s the music I’m going for, not the beer, honest love…) is Saturday openers Opaque. A happy, intelligent, free-spirited way to rock the festival off to a flyer, Mooney and the boys will set the standard for the others to follow. Take your pick then from Chris Watson, The Malingerers, The Stolen Gnomes and our very own Andy Whittaker-fronted Motor City Vipers (think Pot Noodle advert in the gym). They’re all worth a trip to see on their own, never mind as a collective. Do the whole weekend, you know it makes sense and you’ll be raising money for Sue Ryder at Thorpe Hall so feel good about yourself too. Finally though I can’t miss the chance to comment on a great weekend I drank away at the end of June in London. Firstly Neil Young, Hyde Park with Liv and Tracy on the Saturday. Absolutely awesome, he’s an icon of cool, 62 years old strutting and snarling through his repertoire like a 18 year-old. The gig was the best this year by far. It’s the second time I’ve seen him and both times I’ve been blown away, should you ever get the chance to see him you should, just to say you’ve been. Then on the Sunday I went back down again with fellow ESP columnist Steve ‘not so funny’ Gonzales to watch The Boss, Bruce Springsteen. He too was amazing, another geezer of advanced years he wowed the crowd for three hours. He was that good I swiped a Bruce banner off the fence 12’ x 6’ …don’t know what the hell to do with it but hey ho… good idea at the time. Anyway Steve, sorry to say, Bruce is The Boss but Neil Young is a god. ‘keep on rockin’ in a free world; Steve… keep on rockin’!

THE MALINGERERS There are several bands around that claim to be unique, but few can be more unique than The Malingerers, who I caught playing in Stamford recently. Featuring several members from the now disbanded and much-lamented Surgens, The Malingerers have been busy writing new material and welding together a fresh and exciting sound from the melting pot of old-time country, blues and rock ‘n’ roll. Think twisted harmonies and lyrics, wailing harmonica, country picking, bouncing bass and shuffly snare and you’re about there! Their performance was simply astounding and if you want to catch them soon, there’s no better place than at the Randall Rootz Festival on August 15 & 16. The last night at the festival on Saturday August 29 is set to be another classic, when Madness tribute band One Step Beyond will play to a guaranteed-to-be packed out marquee. Supported by local acoustic-rock gods, Angryman, be sure you get there by 7pm in order not to miss anything!
Deep Purple arguably wrote some of the greatest rock songs in living memory and through the musical interpretation of tribute band, Pure Purple, the music of Ian Gillan, Lenny Glover, Ritchie Blackmore, John Lord and Ian Paice - the classic Purple line-up lives on. It looks like there’s going to be another exciting season ahead for football fans in Peterborough with Posh in the Championship. ESP’s Mark Shaw catches up with team captain Russell Martin…
The team head into the new season on a high after back-to-back promotions under Ferguson’s charge. “Everyone’s really excited. We are going into the season feeling optimistic – pre season has been really good,” revealed captain Russell Martin.

“Last season we set the target of promotion, we haven’t set a target for this season yet, although that could still happen. Our aim is to
just go and establish ourselves – we don’t want to struggle – and we have enough ability in the squad to do that.
“He’s going to be linked with other clubs just because of the success he has had here, so him staying gives us a lot of confidence.”
“Momentum is very important. It can take you a lot of places in a short space of time. So it’s vitally important we maintain the momentum we have.”
Russell expects tough tests every week, but there appears to be one stand out fixture for the players. “Newcastle is the biggest game,” he revealed without any hesitation.
There have been a few new arrivals at London Road during the summer, but for the players the most important thing was keeping their indemand manager where he was.
“But every week we’ll be playing a massive club, there are going to be no easy games. They’re all going to be really tough.
“Keeping the manager was the best bit of business the club has done,” Russell told ESP. “It was massive news to hear he’d signed a new contract – he has brought most of the lads here and has a lot of respect from them all.

“All of us want to get to the best level we can, and the best way we can do that is by proving ourselves against the highest level of players possible. We all want to play at the top level. We proved ourselves last year and want to do it again.”

PHANTOMS READY TO RETURN TO BUSINESS The 2008/2009 season is one that surpassed the wildest dreams of all local ice hockey fans with Phantoms winning an unprecedented treble of League, Cup and Play-Offs but anybody who thought the Bretton-based side would be taking a breather in the forthcoming campaign had better think again. As expected, last season's headline grabbing campaign resulted in a number of big money contracts being offered to Phantoms players resulting in some big-name departures, but for every quality player lured away from the club, there has been a quality replacement inbound. Heading the list of summer re-signings was netminder Stephen Wall who lived up to his surname last season and was always the club's top priority for the new campaign. On defence, the club lost stalwarts James Hutchinson and Andy Munroe but have moved swiftly to bring in former Phantom Nick Compton

Further signings are expected between now and the start of the pre-season campaign in early September. Off the ice, the club moved sharply to replace departing treble-winning coach Colin Patterson with 40 year-old fellow countryman Doug Irwin who has professional coaching experience in both North America and Europe. The 2009/2010 English Premier League season will see the added challenge for Peterborough's reigning champions of locking horns with former Elite League clubs Manchester Phoenix and Basingstoke Bison, both of whom have chosen to drop down from the arena based top flight and will be viewed by many as the teams to beat in the new campaign.
