BIRD IN THE HOUSE! It’s the last series of Big Brother and Peterborough’s making a big impression with not one, but now two, local faces making it into the BB house. Evictee Sunshine has now been followed by Peterborough boxer JJ Bird! The 23 year-old’s been featured several times in ESP and even modelled for us in a fashion show last year (pictured), now he’s found himself in the famous diary room. JJ has made it onto several quiz shows and made various TV appearances already but Big Brother is like no other so we’ll be watching with interest to see how he does. ESP’s Man About Town Pep Cipriano sparred with him at boxing training at Phoenix ABC and in turn gave JJ media training “In a way I was surprised the producers chose him,” said Pep, “ as traditionally they seem to go for extroverts, loose cannons or ‘strange’ types whereas JJ is a bit of a poser (in a nice way ) but is pretty ‘normal’. He’s fought and beat some tough fighters and never ducked a challenge. He should do well; he’s likeable and clever enough to work out any mind games other contestants might play. “I’m not a BB fan but I’ll definitely be watching now to get behind him just like I did at his fights.” We’ll bring you more next month but in the meantime… good luck JJ!
BEEHIVE IS BACK! ESP popped in to check out the new Beehive at the launch night at Rivergate recently and we have to say it’s looking hot! The guys behind Jim’s Bistro in Peterborough and Jim’s Yard in Stamford are determined to make it a popular drinking haunt again with some great food available in a more casual atmosphere. The garden’s been revitalised with a tiered patio, and inside low seated booths mean you can gather around large tables www.es p m ag .co.u k ( A ugus t )

WETHERSPOONS OPENS IN WHITTLESEY The George in Whittlesey is now a member of the great Wetherspoons family. Located in the Market Place, this newly re-furbished pub has plenty to offer. Wetherspoons are now open from 7am for breakfast and coffee and if you’re on your travels or need to get some work done, you can hook up to their WiFi and surf the net! WELL DONE BGL Locally-based insurance company the BGL Group has been made a lifetime patron of the NSPCC, thanks to their tireless fundraising efforts, raising over £210,000 in just two years! A group from the company recently walked the gruelling 27-mile Walk The Wight trek on the Isle of Wight, rasing £3,500 for the charity, while ESP’s Susan Saunders, who also works for BGL, joined a group who took part in the Three Peaks Challenge. Lee Johnston, senior manager of commercial delivery for ACM and one of the walkers, said – “Walk the Wight’ was just as tough as the Three Peaks Challenge, so our thoughts are now turning to how we can top both of these next year!” ESP would like to congratulate everyone involved and wish them the best of luck for next year!

What a party – it was fantastic to see more big names in the city and what a great warm up for the big JLS gig the following night (reviewed p.26) Let’s have more like these great events!

IT’S BACK! GET READY FOR RANDALL ROOTZ MK4 One of the city’s best music festival is back this month as Randall Rootz Mk4 returns to remember local musician Mark Randall. Mark worked hard to develop the music scene in the city and was involved in various bands, so when he sadly passed away in 2007 friends and family set up this festival in his memory.

ESP is always pleased to get behind Randall Rootz which not only brings a festy vibe to the city and some great free music, but also raises cash for Thorpe Hall Hospice where Mark was cared for.
The three-day event will be held on the weekend of August 20, 21 and 22 and the UK’s only Pogues tribute act, The Dead Rabbits, headline on the opening night at the Brewery Tap in Westgate Peterborough. The Saturday and Sunday of the festival will once again move to Charters pub and beer garden for two days of live music with around 16 different acts due to perform The Candle Thieves with the line-up looking like this: Tripping Billies, The Candle Thieves, Whisky Jax, Psycho Bombs, Randolf Matthews, Martin J Sandom, Groove Cartel, Free Peace, The Duffy Brothers, Murray Hockridge, Bex Marshall, Three Legged Dog, Jez Hellard and the Roving Blades, Barber & Taylor, Filthy Lucre and The John Russell Band. Mark was a well-known face on Peterborough's music scene, playing in numerous bands (including The Dead Rabbits and Angryman) and constantly promoted live music and brought new talent to the city. Festival secretary Pat Murphy told ESP – “This year, because of the financial times we all live in, corporate sponsorship hasn’t been as strong. However, we’re very grateful to Oakham Ales for their support, producing a special ale for the weekend and supporting the charity we work to help, Sue Ryder Care. "Special mention must also go to the voluntary support, which has been really overwhelming and we’re so grateful for the support of the scores of musicians who’ll be playing the festival, and those volunteers that organise the children’s activities and all the other work that goes on behind the scenes.” As well as the diverse range of live acts, ranging from folk and world music through to rock and indie, the festival will also include performance poetry, arts, a variety of family entertainment and environmentally inspired workshops and information stands for people of all ages. Funding for the Randall Rootz Festival is made possible through a combination of ticket sales for the Friday night event, the enthusiasm of the bands over the whole weekend and the generosity of the festival’s many sponsors, especially Oakham Ales and Serpentine Green, which allows organisers to stage the free Saturday and Sunday events. For more details, go to www.randallrootz.org and we’ll see you there! Tickets for The Dead Rabbits at the Brewery Tap on August 20 are on sale now on 01733 358500.

PETERBOROUGH FESTIVAL REVIEW This year’s Peterborough Festival, which ran over three big weekends, was a massive success with around 70,000 people attending over 15 days. The opening party in Central Park with Stavros Flatley, Nicole Lawrence and the ESP dancers was attended by over 21,000 people, all thanks to a mix of the great programme and good weather, while the following day saw loads of people watch the Ochestra da Camera. Organiser Dave King told ESP – “Watching 21,000 people jump up and get involved with Stavros Flatley’s set will stay with me forever – I was so proud of the city I live in and this festival showed it in its best light.” The following weekend was the Heritage Weekend, which saw battle re-enactments and roman soldiers in the Cathedral grounds and on Cathedral Square, bringing history to Peterborough’s shoppers.
events @espmag.co.uk Photos: Studio One
The final weekend saw the Edwin Starr band, The Team fronted by the late soul singer’s brother, perform in Cathedral Square and was almost as good as seeing the real thing! ESP’s Matt Zilch supported, and the final party of the festival was another success. Dave King added – “It all worked so well and has been so well supported – now we’re seeing how we can make it even bigger and better! It’s grown so much from last year and now we’ve got to keep the momentum going so we can get more sponsors and even bigger attractions.” If you’ve got any ideas or suggestions for next year’s event, don’t hesitate to get in touch with Dave on 01733 207235.

So far the Yaxley British Legion’s raised over £1,000 for the charity and want to give even more! For more info call 07977 797304, 07971 859087 or 07522 377162, or email rockhouse58@sky.com
the city PICNIC IN THE MEADOWS After last year’s massive success, Nene Park Trust and Heart FM are teaming up once more to bring you the now annual Picnic In The Meadows at Ferry Meadows on August 7. As well as great live music from tribute acts Take 4 That and Girls R Aloud on the Heart stage, you’ll be able to try all of the park’s usual activities, such as the miniature railway, watersports and hydrospheres, there’ll be fairground rides and even the chance to have a ride in a helicopter for just £35. Entry to the park’s free, although some of the activities will charge and parking’s £3.50 for the day. Of course, you could always walk, bike, or get the bus to the park – you could even arrive on a steam train thanks to Nene Valley Railway! For more info call 01733 234193 or visit www.neneparktrust.org.uk.

Friday August 27 kicks off with a Beach Party, so get those bikinis and grass skirts out, and get ready to party into the early hours. There’ll be a live DJ on the decks on Saturday August 28 ready to play all your favourite tunes and requests, and the great drinks offers will continue! It’s bound to be a storming weekend so make sure you head over to The Jubilee in Bourne later this month for one massive party.
GLASTONBURY, DONINGTON – BRETTON? Bretton’s set to host its own festival on August 12, thanks to the hard work of local young people. They’ve got a talented line-up, with everything from street dance to hard rock being performed on stage in Bretton Park. Singer Amy Woods, signed to AMS records, will be joined by Manual Overload, who play rock and pop,
street dancer and solo singer Baby G, dance act Girlilicious and solo artist Becki Tse, as well as the heavy October Again and Scream 4 Silence. The festival’s theme is healthy lifestyles and when you’re not checking out the bands you can watch a recycled fashion show, climb a rock wall or even try your hand at archery, alongside loads of sports and fitness activities. The organisers are still looking for volunteers, so if you want to help call Sabrina on 07920 160148 or Gemma on 07920 160231.
SOUL BROTHERS, SOUL SISTERS The Cresset plays host to a massive night of northern soul and Motown on September 3 with much-loved luminaries of the scene such as John Poole, Marco Martinelli, Martin Stanford, Jamie Trundle, John Bradley, Ian Gray and BBC Radio Cambridgeshire’s Soul Show host on the decks. MIKE TYSON
: THE INTERVIEW
the East of England Showground to be precise. Hosted by boxing pundit Steve Bunce, more than 1,300 people turned out to hear what one of the most exciting and controversial heavyweight boxers of all time had to say about his life in and out of boxing. Tyson became the youngest ever (aged 20) World Heavyweight Champion in 1986 with a second round knockout of Trevor Berbick. His outstanding hand speed, accuracy, coordination, power, timing and defensive abilities – taught by his mentor Cus D’Amato – made him one of the all time greats. However, as with all great fighters, Tyson’s career began to slowly deteriorate (the death of D’Amato and an unstable personal life combined) and many would agree his finest years were between 1986 and 1988 despite two wins in 1989 (one against Frank Bruno) before his defeat to Buster Douglas in 1990. It’s not often I get to interview one of my heroes. You normally only get one chance of posing questions to someone like Mike Tyson, so I put together some of the most challenging questions I know boxing fans alike have always wanted answers to. Frustratingly he didn’t answer the majority of them but focused instead on providing responses to the ones he felt most comfortable with. Nor did he agree to pose nose-to-nose and in a boxing stance with me for our photograph, or indeed look at the camera. They say you should never interview your heroes and now I know why! But meeting intimidating ‘Iron Mike’ was still fascinating and it wouldn’t have been possible without Boxing Promotions Limited, in association with Smackdown Boxing Gym in Hampton. These guys brought An Evening With The Baddest Man On The Planet to Peterborough – the EXEC exhibition centre at
www.es p m ag .co.u k ( A ugus t )
You can read my full interview on www.espmag.co.uk but firstly I began with a question that every boxing fan knows the answer to… Do you think you’d have ever been heavyweight champion of the world had you not met Cus D’Amato? “Never. I think I am an idiot and Cus always knew how to work with fighters who had special needs. He was blessed with a skill to convey his genius to fighters with no patience and discipline.”
“One day Cus said if I kept acting up in school I would have to leave him. I fell on the floor crying – it was the first time he saw me cry – and begged him to not put me out. He didn’t but the threat was there unless I tried harder at school.” You knocked out Trevor Berbick to win the heavyweight title. Can you remember what was going through your mind minutes before the opening bell? “I wanted to make Cus happy and told myself that Cus was going to have his second heavyweight champion that night. I really believed this was my real family and I just wanted to make Cus proud of me.” Which fight would you say was your best and why? “I think Buster Douglas was my best fight because I took a good beating. In the boxing world that I came from, taking a beating like I did was merit in itself. Even when Muhammad Ali fought Larry Holmes people were in awe of Ali's pain threshold. It was unimaginable. If that fight was never stopped, Ali would have continued until his death.” Who was your toughest opponent? “Probably Evander Holyfield.”
What made him so special and what made you trust and believe in him?
Do you remember who you beat when you said: "How dare these boxers challenge me with their primitive skills? It makes me angry. They're just as good as dead."
“He was very interested in me and desperate to see me succeed. I loved my new family structure (Cus took Tyson under his wing and moved him into his home) and I felt if I couldn’t succeed then I wouldn’t be able to stay with him. That was my motivation.
“It was Carl ‘The Truth’ Williams. I let my ego cloud my judgment, which led me to say those things. I now deeply regret making that statement. I just wanted to be famous. I told my mother at her grave that when the Tyson name is mentioned people
MY WORD OF THE MONTH
Juicy
Somehow fruit isn’t the first thing that springs to mind… I’m thinking: bum, baps, lips, melon/s, wet, round, Lucy (it rhymes), gossip, J. Lo, lick, buns, dripping, hourglass, rack, juganoughts, Kelly Brook, Kelly from school, fit, Notorious B.I.G, booty, yummy, succulent, big, fine, tender, delicious, meat.
Yeah, I’d be more impressed if you could do it from the boot of my car though…
wouldn’t think about Cecily Tyson. I sparred with Williams when he was preparing to fight Holmes. Carl helped prepare me for life in the boxing ring and I should’ve said complimentary things and thanked him for giving me a chance by sparring with him. Guys like Holmes didn’t want to spar with me because I was just a kid.”
“Good show Stavros but I reckon I could do it with both hands tied behind my back…”
CAUGHT IN THE ACT!
Who would you name as the three best heavyweights of all time and why? “I’d say Ali, Holmes and I think Rocky Marciano was extremely underrated. Marciano had fast hands but never got any credit for it. He was probably the most underrated heavyweight of all time. His skills were overlooked and I can count on one hand the number of black eyes he received. His boxing skills surpassed his 49 and 0 record.” What does it take to be a champion and what advice would you give to someone aspiring to be one? “I’d say deprive yourself of everything that tastes and feels good. The only pleasure that should be allowed is in the gym and the ring. The art of discipline should be studied and mastered. My definition of discipline is doing what you hate to do but doing it like you love every second of it.” What motivates you today? “Passion for life. I’m trying to be a decent person in life and society. Being able to support and help others besides just my family and friends. If I have a healthy life then I will have a healthy death.”

UNCLE SAMS IS COOKING! I popped into the new Uncle Sams restaurant on St Mary’s Street in town with my good friend Hannah Gookey to sample some of their quality Americanthemed grub. Mark, the owner, is keen to create a very laid-back atmosphere with quality food, not fast food! And the food certainly is quality – I tried their veggie burger which comes with homemade coleslaw (the best I’ve tasted!) and their American-style fries. The burgers are all cooked fresh that day on a proper bad boy open grill! Hannah not being vegetarian had the Montreal burger. Mark also offers a massive range of steaks and told me part of the reason for him opening the restaurant was to provide a place in the town to get a decent steak any day of the week. If you haven’t given it a try just yet the restaurant’s open Tuesday to Saturday 10.30am till 2.30pm then 6.30pm till late and Sundays 12pm - 3pm.
THE BARN OPENS ITS DOORS A new venue should be opening its doors in Stamford around now. The Barn will be taking over where Square One used to be situated in St Mary’s Passage. It’s always good to hear there’s a new addition to the local scene, so I’ll be popping in there to get some more info and to see what The Barn will be offering in the near future!
SCOTGATE BANK HOLIDAY BEER & TUNES It’s good to see The Scotgate of Stamford returned to its former glory and getting back in the swing of live gigs. On August 7 Fallen play live, then over the August bank holiday weekend they’re mixing live music with a mini beer festival – Copperhead will be playing some great AC/DC tunes on August 28 and Blue Soul Express play at 2pm on August 29 and then it’s open mic on the bank holiday Monday. The new owners took over in June and formerly ran The Norfolk in Peterborough, famed for its live music, and The Bell in Sawtry. They’ve shaped up the pub with a refurb and now offer food with a carvery on Sundays. Word is they’re also opening a cellar bar in September which will stage open mic and folk nights, so I’ll keep you posted.
THE RIVERSIDE ROUND UP Another Riverside fest done and dusted and another successful year for all involved I think! A record number of people attended the two day festival this year including myself. I popped down with the ESP Paparazzi girls Emma and Sadie on the Saturday to capture the vibe and take in some of the music and fantastic sunshine we had for the day. Looks like you were all having a great time…

GREAT GIGS @ THE CORN EXCHANGE The Corn Exchange is putting on some great gigs in August and early September that I thought I’d give a shout out to this month. First of all my old mate Lewis Hall is gigging with his fantastic Pink Floyd tribute band Think Floyd on August 7. Their new show features the whole range of classic Pink Floyd from Barrett, The Wall, Wish You Were Here, The Division Bell and a complete performance of the iconic album Dark Side Of The Moon.

Another gig to mention is Robbie Williams Banned a tribute to Robbie Williams, which is hitting the venue on September 9. The show features a line-up of seven stunning musicians and performers. Fresh off the back of playing major festivals over the summer this show is simply not to be missed. Robbie Williams Banned really is the closest you'll get to the real thing. Box office: 01780 766455

Confessions... Susan Saunders
Oh I do like to be beside the seaside… In a bid to escape the freak jungle-worthy heatwave that we’d been experiencing of late, I decided a trip to the seaside was in order. Having packed the picnic (that I’d later discard in favour of fish and chips), stick of rock and the bikini that I probably wouldn’t wear (in that neck of the woods the sea is waaaaaay too cold) – we were ready to go! The trip down was lovely. Even the four-mile tail back, one hour queue didn’t faze me. Perhaps because we had the A/C on full blast and James Morrison playing on the CD player, but mostly because I was about an hour away from my favourite chippy. Plus all the nasty thunder flies were squashed against the windscreen rather than crawling on me! Revenge is sweet… The day was absolutely beautiful, perhaps a bit too beautiful. We’d eaten our fish and chips, ice cream and rock (slimming!) and were relaxing on the quietist part of the beach. I say the ‘quietest’ part of the beach, but that somehow paints a false picture. You see, the beach was heaving. What with the sun beaming down and the majority of the population not owning a massive swimming pool (myself included), everyone had flocked to the beach, like moths to a flame. The mass of people didn’t help with the temperature levels so, having changed into the bikini ‘that I wasn’t going to wear’, I sought sanctuary in the sea. Not trusting our temperamental weather, I placed my Pri-mani (Primark) flip-flops on top of my clothes in case they flew away. We were gone for what seemed like five minutes but in actual fact it was nearer an hour. The sea was unusually lukewarm (or perhaps I was extra hot?) and so time had run away with us. After a short spell of drying off in the sun, we got dressed again and were making our way to the car when… something felt very different. My shoes had vanished. Now, being the organised person I like to be, I emptied my bag, in the hope that I’d already packed them but they weren’t there. “Where did you put them?” my boyfriend Tim ‘helpfully’ asked. Men! Why oh why do they ask
www.es p m ag .co.u k ( A ugus t )
the most ridiculous questions? This is always the predictable yet entirely unhelpful question asked once something’s lost. If I knew where I’d put them, they wouldn’t be lost! Not picking up on my annoyance he continued with – “Did you leave them in the car?” I scowled. “No darling, not in the car. I wore them here.” Did he really think that I’d trundled over to this spot without shoes on? Diana Vickers or Joss Stone, I am not! One helpful thing that came out of ‘Tim’s Question Time’ was that it got my slightly sundried brain whirring. As I knew I’d worn them from the car and that I hadn’t packed them away there was only one conclusion; they’d been stolen! I scanned the crowds for guiltylooking fashionistas who might be sporting my precious Pri-mani footwear and then… I spotted them, perched in the sand next to a couple. I boldly went over and asked if they were my flip flops that had surely been taken by ‘mistake’. The look of death that followed indicated that indeed they were not. The fact that they were white and mine were gold was also an indicating factor… Oops! Shame-faced at my false accusation Tim hurried me away to the car. If some little scally wanted my £2.50 Pri-mani couture that much then they were welcome to them! The situation was not helped by the fact I squashed a big chip under my left, bare foot and an elderly gentleman, dressed as if going to the races, shook his head and tutted after looking at my feet. This attire was NOT by choice! The drive home was less fun. The sandals weren’t my prized possessions or anything but they were such a bargain… and they matched my bikini… and well THEY WERE MINE! Girls you know the feeling I’m sure. When I finally stopped sulking and realised I’d actually not only walked to the car barefoot but was driving without shoes too I began to hum Super Duper Love and figured the Joss Stone look kind of suited me…

TRIED AND TESTED Having just got back from Turkey on my hols, my friend Rachel and I had the perfect opportunity to test a variety of suntan lotions to see which ones really are worth the money. Here are our top three… 1) Best all-rounder – Boots Soltan Moisturising Suncare Lotion SPF 30, £9.25. Me – “This light, non-greasy lotion really is my must have buy if you’re out and about in the sun this summer. It has a 5 star UVA rating and is really easy to apply and rub in, leaving your skin soft and moisturised. Most importantly though it does what it’s meant to and really does keep your skin protected and reduces redness.” 2) Best for sensitive skin – Simple Sun Sensitive Lotion, available in SPF10, SPF15, SPF30 and SPF50, £9.99.
COMMON ALLERGIES AND HOW TO HELP PREVENT THEM An allergy is an abnormal reaction of the immune system which occurs to harmless environmental substances such as pollen, animal hair or even food. It’s claimed one in three people in the UK are likely to suffer from an allergy at some stage in their life and although usually harmless they can be very annoying, especially hay fever. Here are a few tips on how to help prevent allergies … • Pollen – Sneezing and having a runny nose is never attractive. Try to reduce symptoms by staying in on windy days when the pollen count is high, close your windows and use air-con if you have it instead. If you do suffer from hay fever try using a nasal spray or take antihistamines. • Animal hair – if you have a pet, keep it out of your bedroom and wash the animal regularly. Vacuuming often will help too… that’s the house not your pet! • Insect bites and stings – wear insect repellent and long sleeves and trousers in the evenings, especially if you’re near water. Keep sweet foods and drinks, that may attract wasps, covered up. • Cockroaches – they’re not only creepy but their droppings can cause allergic reactions too. You’ll often get cockroaches on holiday in hotter climates but you do get them in England too. Try to keep your kitchen area clean and block any holes in floors, walls and windows to keep them out. Don’t stamp on them if you see them as this can spread their eggs and the problem may get worse. • Dust mites – although present all year round their population peaks during the summer as they thrive in warm, humid temperatures. Prevent dust mite allergies by covering mattresses and pillows and washing your sheets on a weekly basis in hot water.
GET IN THE BROW KNOW-HOW Bold brows are all the rage at the moment with statement eyebrows a favourite on the spring/summer 2010 runways. Keep yours full and natural for an easy, modern look with the help of JK Jemma Kidd I-Conic Eyes Brow Pencil, £10. I tested this out to see if it was worth the money and found it to be an extremely useful
www.esp m ag .co.u k ( A ugus t )
make-up tool. With eyebrow brush and tweezers one end and the brow pencil and sharpener at the other end it really does have everything you need to get perfect brows in one handy pencil. The pencil itself was the perfect colour and blended in well with the brush helping to keep brows looking groomed and tidy. Definitely a worthwhile beauty tool, ideal for everyday use.
Rachel – “This sun cream is perfect for sensitive skin. I often get an allergic reaction to suntan lotions but I had no problems with the Simple range of sun creams. They last for a long time and are waterproof, so ideal if you're a bit of a water baby. The only negative to this sun cream is that it’s quite thick so doesn't rub in very well and can leave you with a white glow!” 3) Best long lasting – Piz Buin 1 Day Long Lotion, SPF15, £9.95. Rachel – “This lotion gives you up to six hours protection from the sun. It's easy to apply and is waterproof so you don't need to re-apply every time you get out of the pool. I’d recommend applying it half an hour before sun exposure. It's only available in SPF15 so isn't suitable for those who are extra sensitive to the sun but really does last for six hours.”

Blue eyeshadow is back and it’s super duper glam! If you’re like me, blue eyeshadow was probably one of the first items of make-up you ever bought. See if you can dig out your old blue eyeshadow as it’s back with a bang with many celebs seen sporting this latest beauty trend. Sarah Jessica Parker sticks close to the original trend by wearing a classic mid-blue all over her lids with lots of heavy mascara and eyeliner to add a modern twist. If you don’t want to resemble Pat Butcher and aren’t quite so brave why not try just accenting your eyes with a blue/turquoise eyeliner under the lower lashes? Avon’s Arabian Glow Soft and Sleek Eyeline eyeliner in Turquoise Hues is perfect and looks great teamed with gold for a gorgeous party look. If you thought that blue couldn’t look sophisticated, you’re mistaken. Opt for a smoky navy blue such as Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Goddess £12.50 for a sultry, evening look.
THE EYES HAVE IT! Burning the candle at both ends? Fed up of having tired-looking eyes? Check out this handbag sized eye revival roll-on from Tesco to give you that instant bright-eyed look. Derma Intensive + Eye Revival Roll On, 15ml, £5.40 helps care for the delicate skin around the eye area. With caffeine to improve the skin’s elasticity and hyaluronic acid to rehydrate and moisturise, your eye area will be left looking soft and revitalised in no time. Next time you pop down to your local Tesco for a loaf of bread and a bottle of plonk, don’t forget to pick up this little miracle worker too, perfect for use the morning after the night before.

Everybody in love, go on put . .. p u s d n a h r u yo

Our boy Aston giving it his all!
Looks like everybody in Peterborough is in love with JLS as the city came alive with the sound of their music! When I saw a mile of fans queuing up to see JLS (18,500 to be precise) I was a little frustrated to be joining the back of it, but it didn’t take me long to realise this wasn’t your typical queue. This was the brightest, loudest, and most excited line of people I’ve ever seen. After counting 104 blue hoodies, and singing the chorus to Everybody In Love for the seventh time, I was finally on the Embankment.

With summer deciding to join us again and Heart FM creating a brilliant atmosphere on the stage, I could really feel the excitement starting to build. I knew we were about to experience a concert the O2 or Wembley would’ve been proud to host.... and right on our doorstep! By the time dance group Diversity hit the stage the anticipation levels were sky high, and seeing the guys dance that well in the flesh makes you realise how amazing they really are – if you thought they www.es p m ag .co.u k ( A ugus t )
looked good on the TV, it’s even better when you’ve got a front row seat (well, mid way back at least). And recent ESP cover star Diana Vickers warmed the crowd up nicely too – not everyone’s cup of tea – but her single, Once, was a big hit and the crowd gave her a warm welcome. There’s no denying that girl can belt out a tune, even with the pressure of 18,500 people watching! She definitely brightened up the night for any lads who’d been unwillingly dragged along! It was quite obvious that most of us were there for one thing. When the first few beats of JLS’s music hit the stage, the crowd went wild. Girls screamed and cried, everyone danced and shouted at the tops of their voices... it was enough to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Aston then said to us all – “I’ve been waiting to say this for a long time. It feels good to be home. I’ve told the lads there’s no crowd like a Peterborough crowd.” JLS then went on to do a great performance – Aston showing off his back flips and powerful voice, and the impressive dance moves I wish I could pull out in Flares on a Saturday night.
The lads had of course just scored their third number one single with The Club Is Alive – and I think it got the biggest cheer of the night. It was amazing to see everyone around me singing every word of their other hits too – Beat Again, Everybody In Love and One Shot – not bad for a band that hasn’t even been around for two years yet. It seems it was not just me who was impressed with the evening. Kerry Phillips from Bretton told me – “I’ve been waiting outside the gates since 7am, but I don’t even care. Seeing Aston has been more than worth the wait.”
“I’ve told the lads there’s no crowd like a Peterborough crowd.” Watching with her two children, Debbie Shaw from Werrington summed it up perfectly – “This is the best thing to happen in Peterborough for a very long time. The kids have had an amazing time, and I hope there’ll be more things like this in the future.” Let’s hope so! Mikey Clarke

Kylie Minogue The pop princess turns goddess as Kylie’s new album Aphrodite becomes her fifth number one album and sees a return to her dance floor roots. Kylie’s sold 60 million records and her first ever tour of America last year received rave reviews so her star is still shining bright in the pop heavens. For Aphrodite she worked with an executive producer for the first time, Stuart Price, and it’s clearly worked out well. “It was just the best experience,” enthuses Kylie, “and funnily enough I think it’s the most cohesive album I’ve had since the beginning of my career, back in the PWL days, whereby its very nature made it cohesive. There’s a lot to be said for working with different producers and trying different stuff which has worked really well for me in the past but I definitely wanted someone to tie this together as Stuart (Price) has done so beautifully... so that it existed as a real body of work.”
celebs @espmag.co.uk
So what was it about this album and this project that made Kylie want to do it differently to before? “The idea (to do it differently) was at the forefront of my mind on this album because I’d had a little niggle with the previous two albums. But the added reason that all of this came around was because of our dear friend Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters, who was working in this very studio, as I had started recording my album in various studios around the world. He praised Stuart highly and loves me dearly, and basically pestered me and said – ‘you’ve got to do this, it’ll be so amazing!’ – so I’ve got much to thank Jake for.” Kylie wrote several tracks on the album but also wrote with other people including Nerina Pallot on the title track and Luciano and the Swedish House Mafia on Cupid Boy as well as the likes of Calvin Harris and Kean’s Tom Rice-Oxley. Songs were then selected because they fit into the blueprint of the record. Aphrodite is a much lighter album and Kylie admits that in some way it’s a reaction to the darker times she’s been through. “I think a lot of what I do now is, in some way, coloured by the experience I had with illness. I guess I was just feeling like expressing joy at this point I’d written songs more about that period in my life either on or for the last album, so I didn’t feel like going through those again; this was about this moment, this time, and what a happy experience this has been for me.” Kylie’s love life is always a topic of press speculation and interest so what’s her relationship with love at the moment? “That’s a massive question! A lot of people question why so many pop songs are about love, why operas are so written, why paintings are painted, why we cry during really silly commercials. Love in all its various forms challenges us all the time and I guess you could say this was a little love affair with this album. I loved coming to work and I loved working with Stuart, I think that feeling comes through on the album.”
www.esp m ag .co.u k ( A ugus t )
The creation of this album does seem to show a real lift in her outlook as she reveals a small area of the studio became known as the ‘dance zone’ where if a song was right she and her producer Stuart couldn’t contain themselves from bursting into a little boogie! “We’d both be listening in our own world and there’d be the point in the song when the hands would go up! Hands up – good reaction. And of course there was the ‘Dolly Parton Litmus Test’ which I’ve got to tell you has travelled, I’ve been asked so much about that. It’s a way of testing a song’s viability as a song without production. He’d (Stuart) get his acoustic guitar out and we’d sing.” Apparently Kylie does a pretty hot Dolly Parton impersonation and they decided that if they could see Dolly belting out the tune with just a guitar and it would work then it was probably a song destined for good things. Of course this probably means Kylie will also be destined to do her Dolly version of her songs at every dinner party from this point on! Kylie reveals she embraced her alter ego with enthusiasm… “As a celebration when it was my last day coming in here to wrap up a couple of things, I took it upon myself to get two of the cheapest, gnarliest, gotnothing-to-do-with-a-natural-fibre-at-all outfits –
cowboy and cowgirl. One was couriered here earlier in the day with a message – I can’t remember what I wrote – but just reading it you could tell it was in ‘that accent y’all!’ So by the time I got here later in the day, I did a quick change at the entrance and walked in to find my ‘cowboy’ with Kenny Rogers blasting out of the stereo. Then I came in and punched out a good old rendition of ‘Yeeeeeha!’ with All The Lovers, in ‘Dolly Parton Litmus Test’ style. That was one of our most fun moments.” www.kylie.com

HEAVENLY LAUNCH @ HALO! It was the special opening of the year so far and Halo on Northminster definitely didn’t disappoint! ESP’s Pep Cipriano mingled with the rest of the invited VIP guests for an opening evening that brought the buzz back to the city’s night scene. Halo is tastefully kitted out and revelers were equally tastefully dressed for a night that brought back memories of the old The Bar – the music, its people and the vibe. Plenty of familiar faces turned out, reminisced about ‘back in the day’ and sampled some of the delicious food on offer. The Asian Pacific menu is not only tasty but prices look good too. It seems there’s another place to add to your lunchtime haunts or for an evening meal. Drinks prices get the thumbs up too! The décor is definitely a new look for the city and manager Dave Keetley is proud of his return to the city at this great new venue. He’s lined up DJ nights, and says it’s over 20s only after 9pm Friday and Saturday. There were new faces on the launch night too and plenty of dancing to some old favourites as well as current tunes. Halo has a familiar, elegant and inviting feel to it. We know our Man About Town is hooked and will no doubt be on Paparazzi duty in there again soon. Our Man About Town Pep Cipriano dusted off his lens for a bit of paparazzi action at two city events that couldn’t have been more different. The Ploughman pub in Werrington is enjoying a revival under new manager. Andy Simmons and Pep joined in at a special charity event in aid of a local lad which raised a fantastic £3,150! The place was packed wall to wall with regulars enjoying their favourite tipple while rocking to the unmistakable sounds of excellent local band Hooker (that orange overall is legendary). There was food on the go too, with some of the finest German sausages money can buy – very tasty according to our Pep. The Ploughman is the place to be for karaoke Pep’s next mission with his camera was to check out the Jack Hunt School 40th anniversary celebrations, which reached its grand finale after three days and saw a very special guest drop by! Our lensman was in his element at the school’s 70s disco where staff dressed up in their platforms and flares and taught the students about school life in that decade. Former pupil, and now JLS band member, Aston Merrygold also made a special appearance and performed Empty Chairs At Empty Tables from the musical, Les Misérables – a song he first sang in 2004 when he was at the school. Other events included South Americanthemed activities, dance performances, an exhibition of archive press cuttings spanning the four decades, school memorabilia and photos which drew lots of interest. The evening also gave thanks to Head teacher, Roy Duncan who’s retiring at the end of August. What a night? The only thing missing was our own Face of ESP Tori Bradshaw who’s a student at the school as she was off on hols!

Broadway, Peterborough Tel: 01733 561806 Smack bang in the middle of the city Malayba has been quietly building a reputation for good food over the last eight months so I thought it was high time that me and ‘her good self’ tried it out. We pitched up on a balmy Wednesday night to the restaurant which was pleasantly busy for midweek. Immediately you equate people with good food and service. The restaurant is very Polynesian; exotic in its decor and boasts a menu that has its feet firmly in Malaysia but skirts around the bottom of the Pacific picking the best dishes up on the way. We were warmly welcomed and having been served a cool glass of Sun Lik lager we started to digest the menu, not physically you understand. There are two ways of doing food here – a la carte pick and mix or set menus. Being hungry and impatient we went for a set menu, set menu A to be pernickety. At our table a plate of starters arrived which included Thai fishcakes, chicken satay, spring rolls, money bags – a veggie parcel and paper bag chicken which was not only novel but fun. All were cooked perfectly and piping hot which always pleases me. Suffice to say they didn’t last long.

Review FOOD food @espmag.co.uk
Malayba
Firstly the prawns – big, fat, juicy, cooked just right and smothered in a sweet chilli, coconut milk Indonesian sauce. They were so good ‘her good self’ had to stop me eating the lot; you know the kind of king prawn, burst in the mouth style and wait for the taste explosion! The beef was again tender and because of the peppercorns, hot but not spicy if that makes any sense, contrasted with the prawn dish a treat. As did the chicken, the lime cut through to the palate and released the flavours of the Malay onion sauce it was bathing in, it was truly a stunning trio of dishes. After a perfect digestion break second course was served, Luc Lac beef. Small chunks of tender juicy beef seared in a garlic crust accompanied by a lime and black pepper dip. Man alive, a more succulent lump of beef you will struggle to find – beautiful. The tangy lime sauce complimented the garlic just right. The second course having settled nicely we were then served the main course, a three dish affair consisting of Indonesian king prawns, beef in asparagus and black peppercorns and chicken in lime leaves.
I was pig enough to have a bowl of pecan and maple ice-cream for afters but that’s me and ice-cream for you… A set meal will cost you about £20 which is good value when you consider that everything is cooked with fresh ingredients, no preservatives or colourings are added, the meat is all halal as well so if that’s important to you, you got it. Malayba? We loved it – I think you will too. Andy Slater
RIVERFORD’S FIELD KITCHEN MUST VISIT MORE OFTEN! After sampling the fabulous food and the experience of dining in the Riverford yurt, all I can say is – bring it back next year! Riverford Organics took their popular field kitchen from Devon on tour last month and erected their yurt (a circular tent) at Sacrewell Farm in Peterborough and gave diners a unique experience.
beer, wine and lemonade and the doorways around the yurt gave you the chance to enjoy the view while you were eating.
This fantastic idea not only gave us great recipe ideas for Riverford’s organic produce but also a rare sociable evening of dining. Sat at a series of long wooden tables you inevitably ended up chatting to fellow diners as you passed along platefuls of delicious food so you could all take a share. It was a bit like being at the family dinner table but without any of the tensions! The staff were fantastic and it was great to taste a range of dishes rather than just the one you’d normally order from a menu and it was all tasty and cooked to perfection. You can’t beat food fresh from the fields that day and the lamb with lentils and salsa, roast carrots with lemon, honey and caraway and new potatoes in mint and butter were just gorgeous… and as for the desserts, where do I start?! They were a dessert lover’s dream come true and it was great to be able to sample a little bit of everything! Before the meal it had been lovely to look out across the fields on a summer’s evening enjoying organic www.esp m ag .co.u k ( A ugus t )
Riverford was recently named most sustainable food provider at the Peterborough Green Awards and aim to make organic food accessible and affordable to everyone through their veg boxes delivered straight to local homes. I hope we convinced them to bring the travelling field kitchen back next year, and for longer, so if you do get the chance, make sure you try it for yourself. You won’t be disappointed. www.riverford.co.uk/sacrewell Sharon McAllister

Our thoughts and feelings affect the chemistry in our body. We all know the feeling of being in a great mood, feeling happy, hopeful and excited (the average woman really!) We equally know the opposite feelings of fear, sadness, grief and anger which none of us like but many of us push down in order not to allow them to overtake us day to day. Some people carry emotional pain for years. Our emotional state can be based on past hurts, events and disappointments or can be due to a current situation. We also have a mind that wanders down the future path before we’ve got there so we can trigger different feelings from something that’s not even happened. The trouble with this is the mind is unaware of what is real and what is not and responds to your feelings. So the more dread you have of some imagined doom or gloom the more it is affecting your physical wellbeing with the release of stress hormones. So why do I write this and what does it have to do with nutrition? Just think for a minute about how you react to those negative feelings inside, do you – Forget to eat? Or else can’t keep your head out of the biscuit tin or the vending machine? How much alcohol do you need before you finally think you’ve drowned those sorrows? Do you become Forrest Gump and just keep running? Do you keep the tobacco industry in business with endless smoking? Do you ‘lose it’ with everyone?
Feelings and food – your sad mood could be zapping your nutrients! Why is it when you have an off day where you feel totally hacked off, want to have a good cry or a good rant and you get told to cheer up or stay positive, nine times out of ten you want to tell them to trot on? You’re quite happy to let it all out or stew in your own grotty feelings for a bit. Anger, fear, anxiety, worry etc. are all horrible feelings, which, if felt on a regular basis without being
dealt with, can affect your longterm health. Positive emotions appear to have a ‘healthier’ effect on the body and the negative emotions are more destructive. But to get to a more positive feeling sometimes you have to feel or deal with some of your feelings in order to get to the more positive ones. Emotions are our own inner guidance system. They can give
us a point of reference on how we feel moment by moment if we want to take a bit more notice of them. Today we get good advice on food and drinks that can help or hinder our physical bodies but we tend to forget about the corrosion that unresolved emotional issues can cause on our physical and mental wellbeing.
Most of us suffer a bit of self sabotage when we’re not really dealing with emotional issues. Nothing robs the body more readily of nutrients than ongoing challenges in life that aren’t being dealt with, as these stress out the body. Your emotions may play a critical role in your physical wellbeing. How we deal with them varies from person to person. Unexpressed long held emotions may contribute to disease so you need to take care of your emotional wellbeing as well as your diet and overall lifestyle. The mind, body and emotions are all linked, neglecting one affects the other. ‘You cannot solve a problem with the same thinking that created it’ – Albert Einstein Karen For more information on nutritional and health go to www.karendevine.co.uk or www.devinedetox.co.uk

CHANGE OF HEART playing brilliant music first and foremost, with essential local news and traffic in the mornings. Kev added – “Rather than being local for local’s sake, our aim is to be more relevant to peoples lives. Huge competitions – big name guests, and lots of showbiz stuff… and most importantly of all, a sense of fun for people to wake up to in the morning!” Although he admits changes are difficult and take some getting used to he believes the fact the station’s now bigger will mean they’re able to be involved in more exciting things. “Things like the concerts at the Embankment recently, which were fantastic for Peterborough – they’re hopefully the start of something more regular.”
Kev and Ros on-stage at the recent JLS concert
Radio stations in Peterborough are full of changes at the moment and for the last few weeks Heart listeners have found themselves waking up with a new girl as Ros joined Kev Lawrence on the 102.7 breakfast show. The changeover left many people asking what happened to Abby, the show’s previous co-host in the breakfast chair. Kev told ESP – “For two and a half years (more or less since Hereward became Heart) I’ve loved working with Abby whose sense of fun and wicked laugh also proved to be really popular with listeners. I’ll always have fond memories of the time we spent on the air together, and I’ll miss her loads. But it’s now time to embrace the new show after bosses here decided on a change of direction. Heart Peterborough is now Heart Cambridgshire, covering
a much bigger area, which is really exciting.” So as Abby has moved on to new opportunities Kev’s new co-host Ros Webb has moved across from presenting on Heart in Milton Keynes and told ESP – “I’m really loving being on the new show with Kev. This city looks like a great place to live and work. I’ve got some old Uni friends who are from Peterborough, and catching up with them has been amazing.
Let’s hope so guys! Take a look at their backstage video blog with Marvin and Aston from the JLS concert on www.heart.co.uk
“The best thing about Peterborough so far for me is its beautiful cathedral. I want to live in it. Plus with our studios situated within Queensgate, I love the fact that I can be presenting one minute and shopping for shoes the next!” Heart’s breakfast duo hitting the airwaves

ROYAL OPENING AT GARDEN PARK Peterborough’s newest garden centre and shopping complex has followed up its official royal opening with news of exciting plans for Christmas.
“When she completed the unveiling of the Children’s Circle tile art she said it was one of the best projects she’d unveiled – she really liked the idea of celebrating all the children’s names.”
Almost 500 invited guests and local school children welcomed HRH the Countess of Wessex to Peterborough Garden Park recently for the opening of the Park’s garden centre and 11 complementary shops.
Paul Tapparno restaurant manager of Andronicas World Of Coffee at the site told ESP the day also marked the start of some exciting plans there too.
Photo: Terry Harris
Summer at the centre might be in full swing but plans are already in place for Christmas at the Van Hage garden centre which will have a fantastic ice rink as part of its festivities running for six weeks from Saturday November 27 to Sunday January 9, 2011.
“We’re already running an art display which is going really well and the feedback’s been great. We plan to introduce jazz evenings and open late until 11.30pm at night. It’ll be something different and give people a choice from going into town. It’ll be ticketed and include food and a glass of wine.
Paul Tapparno
Gordon Eddington Chairman of Peterborough Garden Park told ESP the royal opening was a special day for everyone – “We’ve been looking forward very much to welcoming Her Royal Highness and she made it a real success.

“She loved seeing and meeting the children, she clearly has a great affinity with them and within Van Hague garden centre she liked the architecture and understood the connection that building has with the glasshouses at Wisley.
“We’re also planning some special community events including a charity day on August 30 for a young girl called Sophia who’s disabled – and we’ll be doing something similar every bank holiday Monday.” It all sounds great and we’re looking forward to all the new events, we’ll keep you posted but in the meantime keep an eye on www.peterboroughgardenpark.co.uk for all the latest.

So would you want your first car again?
KEITH DALTON
CHRIS WHELPDALE
“My first car was an extremely second hand Vauxhaul Chevette. It had been resprayed and was a pinkish beige. Beige because that’s what I thought its colour was. And pink because that’s what my mates say it was. Only after I sold it did I find that girls would go out with me.”
BRITS STILL PINING FOR THEIR FIRST CAR Auto Trader research reveals one in five people secretly long to get their hands on their first car. Recent research by AutoTrader.co.uk revealed that sentimental Brits would love to buy back the first car they owned. Out of 2,370 people questioned in June 2010, 20% said that they’d also be likely to buy a new car just because it reminded them of the first car they owned!
“Mine was a red Ford Fiesta. I loved it but crashed it into a lamp post and then passed it on to my brother. I wouldn’t want it back though as I’m not happy with current car and would like an even newer one!”

“My first car was a red Fiat Uno. People used to tease me that Fiat stood for ‘Fix It Again Tom’ but I managed to write it off twice and it still came back from the dead. It drowned in the 1998 Easter Floods and was hit by a milk float. Loved the car but not sure I'd want it back – think I rode my luck enough when I owned it the first time!”
“I had a beige A reg Vauxhaul Astra 1.3s. It cost me £1,200 but I spent about £2,500 sticking a boy racer spoiler on the back and respraying it (the same hideous colour for some reason!) putting spotlights on the front and adding alloy wheels then within a year the engine blew up … so I sold it to my brother! So no, I wouldn’t want the same again…”

“My first car was a blue Peugeot 104 4 gear, 1litre. It was great but I wouldn’t want it back because its exhaust fell off about a million times and if I went over 70 the steering wheel would shake.”
Still, for 10% of respondents it was all about the new car – for them, a car that’s 2-5 years old is just too old when purchasing a ‘new’ vehicle! The good news is that thanks to the swappage schemes now in place at major car manufacturers like Peugeot, Kia and Toyota, a new version of that original motor is easy to lay your hands on.
“Mine was a maroon Renault 12 tl 1971. I’d love to have it back as I used to do loads of err… ‘cuddling’ in it, as it had big comfy reclining front seats!”
MIKEY CLARKE ESP writer “My first car was a red Ford Fiesta (called Ruby). She cost me an absolute fortune in repairs. Also, on the rare occasion that I'd get road rage, she gave out the least intimidating and most embarrassing honk imaginable! Despite these faults, you can't help but love your first car.”

Most of us can remember that painful day when our first symbol of freedom was carried off on the back of a lorry to the scrap yard as we waved it off with a tear in our eye. As many as one in ten say that they were genuinely devastated at the end of this great first love affair.

The page that says after 15 series Top Gear is still providing viewers with plenty of joy. For me it’s working out which one of the presenters is the biggest idiot. Is it Clarkson and his disgusting habit of talking at the same time as trying to swallow a burp? May and the way he pronounces the word ‘was’ as ‘wuz’ or Hammond, who can barely see above the steering wheel when he’s driving and spends the rest of the time sniggering at anything the other two say? It’s such a difficult decision I’ll need another 15 series to decide.

SHED IN THE FACE SUMMER, SUMMER, SUMMER TIME. JUST SIT BACK AND UN-WHINE Well, what a summer it’s been so far. Amazing the difference a bit of sunshine makes. A couple of weeks ago I stepped out of Queensgate and thought I’d been magically transported to some cosmopolitan city centre in the heart of Europe. Then I caught sight of the graffiti scrawled on top of a building society wall, small children running through the fountain water jets wearing just a dripping nappy, and their mothers smoking a cigarette and holding a McDonalds happy-meal box. It was at that point I realised that yes, I was still in Peterborough – city of a thousand dreams. But of course the biggest talking point over the summer was the World Cup and a certain team’s shocking performance. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team perform so badly. After all the hype and expectation over the past year you’d think we’d get something truly amazing, but instead they were absolutely pathetic; and don’t even get me started on how much they earn. But, anyway that’s enough about the actors in the new A-Team film…onto other stuff. Last month’s Mostly Fenny Walk Of Fame – a light-hearted look at some of the places around the city centre with a connection to Peterborough’s most famous residents and visiting celebrities proved popular. Thanks to everyone who emailed in their own suggestions. Please keep them coming, no matter how trivial. www.es p m ag .co.u k ( A ugus t )
Regular readers may remember that this month is the 1st anniversary since Face of ESP compere Ian Gray burnt down his garden shed in a freak gardening accident. Picture the scene. Ian’s happily zapping weeds with a new gardening gizmo he’d got from B&Q when unbeknownst to him some embers blew under his shed. An hour later as he relaxed indoors on his chaise longue watching the cricket with a can of Boddingtons, his wife Caroline came running into the living room to tell him there were ten-foot flames roaring from his shed! At the time I marked this sad occasion by suggesting Ian joined Matt Zilch’s band on stage when they next played Kings of Leon’s Sex On Fire. Altogether now, “Oh no – my shed is on fire!” Thankfully Ian took this in good spirits and it’s now my great pleasure to report that a year on he has a brand new deluxe garden shed installed for summer 2010 which he proudly told me about recently. “I had a bit of a result actually with that shed burning down, because I was able to replace it with an even bigger one twice the size!” Oooh get you Ian with your big new shed. But what about the cremated one? How should Ian commemorate its untimely demise? A candlelit vigil in his back garden to remember all the gardening equipment that perished (a Flymo, some rakes and a pair of gardening shears from Notcutts amongst others) no, I’ve got a better idea. The cremated garden shed ashes should be put in an urn and displayed in Ian’s trophy room (aka his downstairs toilet). I have it on good authority that this is the only place in his house where Mrs Gray lets him store all his old crap and the ‘Ashes’ would be a great conversation piece on top of the toilet cistern being looked down on by a signed photo of the England cricket team.
THE ESP CAR COVER STAR You may have noticed the ESP promo cars out and about at various events recently. I was pleasantly surprised to see one of them parked in Serpentine Green the other day with Kelly Brook laid across the bonnet! Sadly it wasn’t actually Kelly herself, just a picture of the front cover of ESP’s March edition which she adorned so stunningly… unlike last month’s cover star Katie Melua – who has a dimple in her chin so wide you could park all 9,000 of those bicycles in Beijing that she keeps singing about.

KNIGHT & DAY
How can any fan brought up on action movies from the eighties not get giddy about this? After seemingly ditching Rocky and Rambo, Sly is back with a new pet project that ingeniously brings together some of the biggest stars from the genre. And to top it off, Sly’s team of mercenaries have names like Lee Christmas (Statham), Toll Road (UFC fighter Randy Couture) and Hale Caesar (Terry Crews). That alone is worth the admission price.
Released: August 6
Cast: Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Peter Sarsgaard. Director: James Mangold
Rourke and Sly’s Planet Hollywood buddies Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger in cameo roles; and that should have any bloke salivating with anticipation. As long as it’s not complete rubbish of course.
The only major action name missing seems to be Jean-Claude Van Damme as the mercenaries Throw in Jet Li and Rocky IV co-star head to South America on a suicide Dolph Lundgren completing his mission to overthrow a dictator. team; Eric Roberts and ex-WWE champ Steve Austin on bad guy Just don’t expect many Oscar duties; Oscar-nominee Mickey nominations.

THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE
THE LAST AIRBENDER
Released: August 11
Released: August 13
National Treasure star and director Nic Cage and Jon Turteltaub re-team for this fantasy adventure – loosely based on the classic Disney Fantasia segment – which sees Cage’s master sorcerer recruit a young protégé (Jay Baruchel) to take on an evil wizard.
The Sixth Sense’s M Night Shyamalan has chosen this live action version of Nickelodeon’s hit animation as he battles to get his career back on track – with Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel on villain duties against the elementmanipulating hero Aang.
www.es p m ag .co.u k ( A ugus t )
His career might not have been the same since he arsed about on Oprah four years ago – declaring his love for Katie Holmes in the process – but ‘The Cruiser’ still has more hits than misses for me. His latest movie vehicle has again underperformed for him Stateside – probably because it looks a bit like a comedic version of Mission Impossible – but with Vanilla Sky co-star Cameron Diaz on board it could still hit the spot for UK audiences.
SALT
PIRANHA 3D
Released: August 20
Released: August 20
Angelina Jolie stars as title character CIA agent Evelyn Salt, who gets accused of being a Russian spy (so a bit topical). She goes on the run to prove her innocence, in this long-awaited actionthriller from Patriot Games director Phillip Noyce – with Liev Schreiber (Wolverine) supporting.
After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of prehistoric man-eating fish, it’s up to Elisabeth Shue and Ving Rhames to try and save the day as the razor-toothed critters descend on Lake Victoria inhabited by thousands of idiotic beerswilling Spring Breakers in this 3D re-imagining.
In this comedy-actioner Cruise and Diaz are a fugitive couple trying to evade Sarsgaard’s (Flightplan) determined federal agent, in this movie that’s been billed as a bright and breezy slice of middle-of-the-road summer fun. But compared to the old Cruise – who was a license to print money – his box office clout is like night and day. Sorry, I had to get that in somewhere.
SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD Released: August 25 There’s high hopes for this one as Shaun Of The Dead director Edgar Wright helms this comedy adventure which sees Superbad’s Michael Cera take on his new girlfriend’s (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) seven evil ex-boyfriends, who are out to kill him.
All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.

CRACKDOWN 2
TRANSFORMERS: WAR FOR CYBERTRON
LEGO HARRY POTTER: YEARS 1-4
(X360) Out now Pretty much coinciding with the launch of the new sleeker, quieter, bigger hard-drived, wi-fi and Kinect motion controller-ready Xbox 360 – familiarity slightly breeds contempt.
(X360/PS3/Wii/ DS/PC) Out now
(X360/PS3/Wii/ DS/PSP/PC) Out now
This sequel sadly feels so close to the first game it’s a rare Microsoft game tinged with disappointment – even with a four-player co-op mode. Fans will probably shrug that off though as you return to Pacific City ten years after the original in this open-world third-personer, with a thick slice of fun to be had… even with the lack of ingenuity. #####
For ‘robots in disguise’ fanboys, there’s finally a game to get excited about.
Talking of familiarity, you can’t really get away from a distinct feeling of déjà-vu with lego-based games.
After the rubbish movie-based games, this flawed, thirdperson Metroid Prime-esque shooting experience – with noteworthy multiplayer experience – is a huge step in the right direction.
It does exactly what it says on the proverbial tin, and behind Star Wars, edges out Batman and Indiana Jones in the franchise stakes with good, solid familyfriendly foundations.
The impressive choice of characters, coupled with a decent – if grim-looking – campaign, leaves this Optimus Prime-d for enthusiasts.
It needs little explanation as Harry and all the Hogwarts favourites get some spellbinding lego treatment – which is as polished as the films.

SPLIT/SECOND: VELOCITY
SINGULARITY
SNIPER: GHOST WARRIOR
(X360/PS3/PSP/PC) Out now
What do you get if you cross FEAR 2, Dead Space, Metro 2033 and Bioshock? A pretty decent first-person shooting experience.
(X360/PC) Out now
You could easily argue Split/Second has the fresher ideas with this uniquely polished driving experience that makes up in ingenuity what it lacks in depth.
It’s not quite as good as any of the aforementioned, but this is still up there with the best FPS’s of the year with its solid, horror-laden action as the Russians cover-up a catastrophic event.
Some of the sniping experiences throughout the campaign – particularly with the Bullet Cam mode – will appeal to shooter fans, but it sadly has an unfinished look.
Take out your opponents with jaw-dropping explosions gained by your on-track skills as racing goes Hollywood. Hugely recommended.
It deserves to find an audience, despite complete lack of originality – and is one of my favourite games in the past couple of months.
The basic mechanics are there, but with only okayish graphics and a shoddy frame rate, this will fade into the background compared to first-person shooter genre definers, despite the odd standout moment.

TIGER WOODS PGA TOUR 11
TOY STORY 3
SHREK FOREVER AFTER
This yearly update would be further up the pecking order if I wasn’t repeating the same review I gave this time last year.
Wonders will never cease. Are kids games actually starting to get better?
(X360/PS3/PC) Out now
This just missed the last issue in a head-to-head with the fantastic Blur – but I’m glad I didn’t have to choose, because this is as equally enthralling in different ways.
Despite some neat ideas this noble effort looks a couple of years out of date.
(X360/PS3/WII/DS/ PSP/PC) Out now
(X360/PS3/Wii) Out now
What more needs to be said? It looks great, plays great – has a couple of new control improvements like True-Aim – and is ultimately the best next-gen golfing package, bar none. Even Tiger looks happy with life. But still loses a mark because of only incremental changes. #####
(X360/PS3/WII/DS/ PSP/PC) Out now The difference between this and Toy Story 3 echoes the same difference in the quality of the movies.
They used to be quite appalling affairs, but this distinctly polished effort looks like it’s had some effort put in with a really impressive co-op mode ideal for young ’uns.
Again, this shows mild improvements on previous Shrekbased video games – and with up to four-players and decent puzzle-elements it will keep kids happy – but there’s been dozens of nearly identical games before it.
The story mode proves to be a little more taxing than usual as you play as Woody, Buzz and co, and with the Toy Box side quests proving engaging, this is one license that has gone to infinity and beyond… but just for kids.
It all comes down to whether they prefer the jolly green giant to toys. #####

Andy has the ESP round-up of the best festivals around – this month we have Randall Rootz and Rhythm Festival coming up… After a few suggestions of who it was we got bored and forgot about it. It then transpired that Toyah was playing on the Embankment in Peterborough on the same Saturday she was playing at the Rock And Bike Festival. She opened one show and closed the other! Not quite transatlantic concorde but still pretty rock ‘n’ roll!
Photo: Karen Spence
Anyway the ‘all’ thing needs explaining. This festival started out as just me and ‘her good self’ sloping off for a quiet weekend, then two of her friends joined in and then another two… and then another two, well one was her sister to split a hair.
Toyah
It’s not often you get a Phil Collins moment in life and quite frankly that’s a relief. I did however experience a Live Aid Phil Collins moment albeit on a less grand scale last month. The Rock And Bike Festival headline act was Vampire Rock featuring Toyah Wilcox, so we all wandered up to the stage (‘all’ will become apparent later) and stared skywards at the fast approaching helicopter.
Photo: Karen Spence
The reason my ears bled!
Now you guys out there may think that’s heaven, one fella and seven women who are getting drunker by the hour and out for a good time, hell no. They turned into a screeching, hollering, whoopin’ out of tune, singing bunch of cleavage flashers… My only injury was bleeding and perforated ear drums but nonetheless it was interesting. Having seen enough breasts to fill the new Wembley my devilish plan of action was drink more. It worked. Toyah Wilcox was great by the way, as was the Vampire Rocks show, apparently there was a live band on stage but I didn’t get past the dancers, don’t know why…. It was a great festival too at £25 for three nights, beer at £2 a can, great bands and friendly people it’s a must for next year. Bad Company played Saturday night and they were awesome, a proper rockin’ four piece, no frills just b*lls out rock, great! Cheers R&B fest, it was a blast. August is a busy month all around. Locally the Randall Rootz Festival is on August 20 - 22. Friday night at the Brewery Tap sees the Dead Rabbits headlining which is a ticket do with all the money raised going to Sue Ryder at Thorpe Hall. Saturday & Sunday the whole festy shifts to Charters where some great bands are lined up. My favourites are The Psycho Bombs, Filthy Lucre and the lovely Bex Marshall on Saturday whilst Sunday has top cougar band Groove Cartel, the immensely talented Murray
Hockridge and old mate the John Russell Band. There are loads more bands, kids’ stuff and environmental stands and as its for Thorpe Hall, you have to do it if you are around. If you want more info check out www.randallrootz.org Long time favourite of mine, the Rhythm Festival down in Clapham Bedford is on the same weekend of Randall Rootz, August 20 – 22, and again has a great line up including The Damned, 10cc, Billy Bragg, Donovan, The Wailers, Arlo Guthrie, Geno Washington and Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams to name a few. Set in the stunning Twinwood arena, Rhythm is an all ages festival of about 6,000 people which is a big enough crowd to feel vibrant but not that rammed that you can’t do or see anything. With great views over the Bedfordshire countryside, great beers, comedy, a solar powered cinema, storytelling and puppetry it has something for everyone. Last time I looked on the website there were only just over a thousand tickets left. It’s a cracker of a festival so book now or you’ll probably miss out – www.rhythmfestival.net tells you everything you need to know. OK I’m off to the ear clinic to get my drums welded up, thanks ladies… it was a noisy pleasure!
Vibe from the underground... "Geoff Hayward of The Mark and Clash City Rockers fame has a similar taste in shirts to me, ice cool ones. We even thought of starting our own shirt club, the entry criteria being you had to have a cool shirt... fortunately we sobered up! Catch his cool one man show instead at the Cellar Bar as part of their new Sunday evening music slots, Sunday August 8 at 8pm to be precise, mind you... he will be suitably shirted I'm sure (try saying that when you’re pickled!) Music every Sunday at 8pm from now on!" www.es p m ag .co.u k ( A ugus t )
LIVE MUSIC
Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene… Hopefully you may have caught me on the one month test broadcast of Radio Peterborough. It’s just finished and what a huge success it was with a massive response from listeners who loved the music and local themes. Another broadcast of a similar nature will hopefully take place later in the year and if you want to know when then it would be a good idea to register on www.radiopeterborough.co.uk. Colin Smith
The broadcast was great fun from beginning to end with the occasional cock-up! My favourite on-air moment was when I introduced the next song as one that in my opinion was better performed by Citizen Smith at their local gigs than the original recording. I was referring to Don’t Stop Believing by Journey, which they do perfectly. Unfortunately I mistakenly played The Nolans singing I’m In The Mood For Dancing (a rock classic). This resulted in a phone call from Colin Smith on air to declare that he had never performed said song! I did try to persuade him to try it as it could fit his vocal range and we left it under consideration… So if anyone hears Smiffy singing it in a pub, at work or in the bath please let me know immediately.
A RAFT OF LIVE MUSIC I always look forward to August because it features three of the area’s great social events which all have a considerable music influence and all of which generate important cash for their chosen charities. I’m referring to the Deepings Raft Race, Peterborough Beer Festival and Thorney Live Music Festival. Each of them have their own unique charm and fingers crossed that the weather will smile on them all this year. The Deepings Raft Race takes to the water on Sunday August 8 featuring self constructed rafts which may float – and may not! These are powered by crews of all ages and sizes dressed in some of the most bizarre outfits you’ll ever see on a weekend in the Deepings. The races start around midday in Deeping St James and finish in Market Deeping at the Coach House. It really is a spectacular sight and last year attracted thousands to the town centre where there were lots for the whole family, including a mini fairground and craft stalls. Food and beverages are always well catered for and the artists appearing this year are (with approximate timings): 2.15pm Mauricky Collins, 3.30pm The Spirit, 4.45pm Bradley Caston, 5.15pm The Guards, 6.30pm Big Grin and 7.45pm The Replicas. All the bands are giving their time free to support this year’s raft race charity which is Help For Heroes. For all details on the raft race log on to www.deepingsraftrace.co.uk
THORNEY LIVE On Bank Holiday Sunday August 29, as the Beer Festival comes to a close, the music carries on at the annual Thorney Live Charity Music Festival being held In the grounds of the Bedford Hall, in Station Road, Thorney. Again charities benefit, the bands play and you and I enjoy a great day out. It starts at 11.30am and carries on until dusk. There are

ALES AND TUNES @ BEER FEST Roll out the barrel for the Peterborough Beer Festival on the Embankment from Tuesday August 24 to Saturday August 28. Live music is a huge part of the event and there’s no shortage this year with the following acts lined up: Tuesday – Dr A’s Blues Consortium Wednesday – Shake Hands Eric supported by The Whisky Jax Thursday – Albany Down are the support and main act still to be announced Friday – The League of Mentalmen supported by The Replicas Saturday – Tribute band Who’s Who with support from Nimming Ned. Saturday also from 3pm you can catch Fallen Breaks, Proto Inferno, Smokescreen and Stringfinger performing half hour sets throughout the afternoon. There’s guaranteed to be something for everyone and my highlight will be the spectacular return of The League Of Mentalmen on Friday night, after last year’s huge success. They brought the house down with a performance that had the whole place rocking and thousands of beer glasses raised in salute after every song. The band include Tim and Paul Mental, Mental Mickey and lead singer Mental Rasty who explained their act to me as – “taking classic songs and murdering them…” Last year when I had the pleasure of bringing them onto the stage, Rastys description of the set was accurate (ballads played to a punk beat). The show was unforgettable League of Mentalmen
He tells me that a few new surprises are planned this year. I suggest you be there for a big start and watch out for a – “Pistols/Gaga combination.” I can’t wait for Friday night at the Beer Festival. See you there! Details on www.peterborough-camra.org.uk and more on p.6 of this issue.
THE LEGEND GOES ON Legend’s founder members are joining up to remember their lead guitarist in a special tribute to Mick ‘Chelly’ Ciesielski on the tenth year since his death in 2000. The band have had an interesting ten years since reforming that year purely to pay tribute to their old friend and they expected to do a one off gig at the Bourne Corn Exchange. That one-off get together has lasted ten years and now the original line-up have got together again to do a one last time tribute to Mick. The line-up is vocalist Bob Banks, lead guitarist Peter Mabbutt, bass Rob Hackett and on drums and backing vocals, Bill Pauley. The gig’s taking place at The Cherry Tree on Oundle Road on Saturday August 7 starting at 9pm and is sure to evoke a load of great memories.
stalls, children’s amusements, plenty of food and a licensed bar. Organiser Andy Stuffins has assembled an unbelievable line-up which promises something for everyone. It’s a real family day out and music on the main stage comes from Aladdinsane, The Pigs (Police tribute), Motor City Vipers, Mighty Quinn, One Eyed Cats, Halo, Dan Elliman and Simon Russell. That’s a lot of top local talent
through the whole bill. It’s a particular treat for the many fans of Bowie tribute band Aladdinsane, who are in the middle of a national tour supporting T-Rextacy, and are doing this hometown gig to support those charities benefiting from the Thorney Music Festival. It’s a great way to finish the Bank Holiday weekend. More details on www.thorneylive.co.uk

TAKE THE POWER BACK If you’ve ever done any of the following: worn skinny jeans and a ripped, offensive t-shirt, harboured a desire to torch the houses of parliament or just nodded your head to a 3-minute guitar-fuelled burst of energy, then you NEED to get to Club Revolution, Park Road at some point this month. The Infest Festival returns from August 5 – 14 and for the cheap price of £25 you’ll have the chance to see some well-known punk, metal and psychobilly bands – not bad when you think that a ticket for Download was £150! Tickets for each night are available separately, but it works out a lot cheaper to get a full ticket. With at least four bands every night, including huge names (if you’re into this kind of thing) such as Anti-Nowhere League, Demented Are Go and Agnostic Front, this is your chance to stick two fingers up to the corporation-infested festivals. Then at the end of the month on August 27, The Meteors return to Club Revolution. If you missed their last show back in February, don’t miss this one. The originator’s of London’s psychobilly scene and still going strong 30 years on, their live show is incendiary and the crowd they attract gives the gigs an atmosphere like no other. Tickets £8, for more info go to www.thepark4music.com

“THE CLASSIC AWAY FROM IT ALL VENUE JUST 15 MINUTES FROM THE CITY”
DIY ALLDAYER Club Dissident on Lincoln Road will be taking a break from electronic music on August 21, when No Gods, No Managers present No-Fest, a whole day of live music from 11 different bands with stalls and a BBQ. Bands booked include Milloy, Above Them, Sam Russo, The Living Daylights and Andrew Cream – all playing punk-influenced music, ranging from straight-up singalongs to ska, crushing hardcore to gentle acoustic. As this is from a collective with a strict DIY ethos, the tickets are just £6.
ECLECTIC AND ELECTRIC @ MAMA’S Mama Liz’s in Stamford has another eclectic line-up this month, ranging from ballsy rock to world music. First up on August 6 is The Beautiful Sleazy, supported by Smashcandy and Verax. The Beautiful Sleazy play swaggering, bluesy rock, which captures the spirit of the UK’s best-loved bands. On August 7, the Boomerang Returns presents Sean Taylor who’s appearing at this year’s Cambridge Folk Festival and his acoustic blues are starting to get him a lot of attention – catch him while you can. He’ll be supported on the night by VanderVerse Priority, who’ll be bringing the sounds of the swamp to Stamford and none other than the legendary John Litchfield – give him a tequila and watch him go! Jez Hellard and the Roving Blades will be playing on August 13, and this act definitely looks interesting. Jez himself plays the harmonica – covering rebel ballads, improvising over gypsy jazz and generally doing things that you never thought possible with a mouth organ! WESTWOOD’S
IN THE HOUSE!
Tim Westwood returns to Central in Stamford on August 7 and will be bringing the freshest cuts of hip hop and urban to the decks. He’s massive in the hip hop scene and has been presenting on Radio One since 1994 – he’s on first-name terms with some of the biggest stars in the scene and regularly gets exclusive tracks and first plays.
Kre8ive Nites are hosting another global brand, this time it’s Pukka Up at Liquid on New Road, on August 29. Reuniting three DJs from Ibiza, Charlie Edwards, Steve Andrews and Danny Quattro, this is going to be a huge party. The last few events these guys have hosted have seen queues down the street and as this is the last Bank Holiday of the year, it’s set to be even bigger. The music policy is strictly party vibes – expect house and Balearic beats. For more info search ‘Kre8ive Nites’ on Facebook. Entry’s £4 before 11pm.
@ HALO
IT’S A DIAMOND LIFE Diamond Life returns on August 28 at Coco on Broadway with Ibiza-inspired house, funky house, electro and tech house fresh from this summer’s season. Residents Jay Heal, Darren James, Benji Ionnatta and Rayan Gee will be joined by up-and-coming talent Dan Clare, whose latest track, Dirty Touch featuring Varski is tearing up the house scene. Entry £2 before 11pm, visit www.diamondlifemusic.com for more info.

DEEPER AND DEEPER If you feel the ground shaking in Stamford on August 20, it’s not an earthquake but the heavy basslines coming from dub at Mama Liz’s on North Street. This night is fast becoming a favourite on the Stamford scene and DJs spin the best in dub, reggae, dubstep and drum ‘n’ bass. Entry’s £5.
KISSDAFUNK Halo is the city’s newest club and has already earned itself a reputation as one of the better places to go to in Peterborough on a night out – and things look set to improve even more, as on August 21 they’ve got a visit from Kissdafunk with Rob Tissera. Rob Tissera is an internationally-recognised producer and is known for turning good parties into great parties!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAMA LIZ
EL SCORCHIO Central will be even hotter than usual on August 5 and 12 when the Miss Wet T-Shirt competition 2010 takes place. LAVA LAMP RETURNS! Lava Lamp, Peterborough’s one and only club night for adults with learning disabilities, returns on August 26 at Pulse8 on Geneva Street. Thanks to funding from the Randall Rootz Festival, this month’s night has an ‘around the world’ theme with DJ and art workshops running before the event to get everyone inspired. Fancy dress is also encouraged, so if you fancy being a bullfighter or a geisha for the night, now’s your chance! Entry’s £3 for people with a disability, £5 for others, entry for carers is free. Tikcets available from Peterborough CVS, 3 Lincoln Court, Lincoln Road. For more info call Nicola on 01733 342683 or Enzo on 07923 843177.
DJ Sensa and DJ Dose will be the main guests at Terror Bass’s big summer party at Club Dissident on Lincoln Road on August 13, along with all the residents. As a special treat to help you deal with the heat, Pazlow and Persue will be spinning dubstep in the second room. Entry’s £7.
CROSSOVER
CHAOS
When artists from different genres collaborate, the result is usually pretty interesting – the Uncz are a collective of drum ‘n’ bass, hip hop, R‘n’B, grime and experimental DJs and they produce a sound like no one else. Coming to Club Dissident on August 20, they combine innovative lyrics with cuttingedge dubplates; what really makes them special is their interaction as all the guys have been close friends for years and they create a unique vibe on stage. Entry’s £7.
FIXATION’S HOUSE OF FUN Fixation will be playing host to another instalment of the legendary website bangingtunes.com’s club night on August 27, which will feature the whole spectrum of the hard house sound – from chunky and funky to fast and filthy. Headlining is Adam M of Hi Oktane, one of London’s best hardhouse nights, and he’s fast getting a reputation for his unique blend of uplifting, groovy but very tough tunes. He’s had tunes released on various labels but is more famed for his unreleased material, which he saves just for his own sets. He’ll be joined by some of the biggest names in the hard house and NRG scene, including Mr Venkman, Mark Ioannides, Space Sentinalz, John Geary, Kid Sample and Nogger.

NEW PHANTOMS COACH BUILDS FOR WINNING CAMPAIGN league and one of the best characters in the game as well and that’s a combination that you just cannot beat."
Curtis Cruickshank
Phantoms new head coach Curtis Cruickshank has made it clear that he’s looking for winners both on and off the ice as he starts to shape his side for the 2010/2011 campaign which starts in midSeptember. Coach Cruickshank is new to ice hockey coaching but has a wealth of experience from playing at the top levels of the game and is clear about the attributes that he wants from his team – "I want not only great players but players who are committed to
Phantoms defensive unit is already shaping up for the new season with standout netminder Stephen Wall one of the first to put pen to paper. Popular Bretton based Dman Dwayne Newman will be back in the camp and he'll be joined by star of the 2008/2009 treble-winning team, James Hutchinson, who returns after playing last season in the Elite League. Also returning to Peterborough's blue-line will be former Sheffield Scimitars player Steve Duncombe who last wore Phantoms colours in their first ever English Premier League campaign.

winning and players ready to adapt their games in order for us to find the right answers on game night." At the very heart of his team will be former Elite League Hull Stingrays colleague Jeff Glowa who the Phantoms coach rates very highly – "Jeff is a heart and soul player that can do absolutely anything and everything to help you win on every night. I think he'll be a perfect fit with the players we have already signed and I believe Jeff will prove to be the best all around player in the
Up front and looking to put big points on the board will be regular faces Maris Ziedins, Tom Carlon, Joe Miller, James Spurr, Warren Tait and James Ferrara with new signing Jeff Glowa boosting what is already a formidable looking strike force. The club expect to make further signings in the weeks ahead and you can keep up with all the latest news and secure your season ticket for the new campaign at www.peterboroughphantoms.com.
the top two, Poole and Wolverhampton. Now he’s ready to play his part in taking the club into the end-of-season play-offs as they put in a firm bid to be crowned Elite League champions for the first time since 2006.

Peterborough fans will be hoping that Schlein, who keeps fit by playing cricket for a local club near his Warwickshire home, comes back next season. Neither side are willing to discuss the matter publicly but the 25-year-old from Darwin has dropped hints that he’d be willing to talk about a more permanent move.
AUSSIE RORY PUSHES PANTHERS TOWARDS TITLE Cricket-loving Aussie Rory Schlein has the smile back on his face and Peterborough fans couldn’t be happier as the mid-summer arrival from Coventry’s helped turn the Panthers Speedway team into genuine title candidates. Even Rory’s parents have noticed the difference in their son since his move to the East of England Showground after he was told to get on his bike by the Bees. Dad Lyndon, in Britain for a three week holiday from their home down under, told ESP – “We’ve never seen Rory look as happy as he does now – he’s a totally different person since he came to Peterborough.
He admits – “I’m really enjoying life at the Showground. It’s no secret that I fancied joining Peterborough last winter but nothing came of it. Then when I got the call to say I was being dropped by Coventry at the end of May I always hoped there might be a chance of joining the Panthers. I couldn’t believe it when, five minutes after I’d been axed, I had a call asking if I’d be interested in a move. It only took me a couple of minutes to agree terms and I obviously made the right decision.” Peterborough have clearly come out on top in the shock swap. While Schlein has flourished and forced his way into Australia’s World Cup squad, Bridger has failed to re-ignite his career and lost his place in the Great Britain side. All roads lead to the East of England Showground on Sunday August 15 – as Peterborough play host to the cream of the Premier League! The top eight teams will be in action before Panthers return to the track looking for the wins that will guarantee their play-off spot.
August fixtures Sunday, August 15: Premier League Fours Final, 2.30 pm. Monday, August 23: Peterborough v Coventry, Elite League, 7.30pm. Friday, August 27: Panthers v Swindon, Elite League, 7.30pm.
“He’s not only much happier himself – he’s riding better than he’s ever done.”
Monday, August 30: Panthers v Eastbourne, Elite League, 7.30pm.
Schlein’s shock move, in a rider swap that took flop Lewis Bridger to Brandon, has transformed the Panthers’ camp and he’s helped them chalk up wins over
