Peterborough Festival Success The amazing opening weekend Heritage Festival saw encampments around the Cathedral grounds and battles by re-enactment groups in Cathedral Square. The finale weekend saw the Mayor’s parade kicked off by a flash mob dance in the Square, and the ESP girls join the parade to Central Park where there were some fantastic acts both on stage and mingling with the crowds. The Magic Numbers headlined the Saturday and Orchestra Da Camera brought the festival to a close with some West End tunes. Plans are already underway for next year’s big event.

Beer We Go Again! ESP’s Mikey Clarke gets ready to prop up the biggest bar in the Boro! Dean Martin once famously said ‘You're not drunk if you can lie on the floor without holding on’. Remember these wise words when visiting Peterborough’s 34th Beer Festival. August 23 sees the return of the biggest social event of the year. It won’t be long until you see thousands of beer glasses carried around the city centre, whilst everyone’s Facebook pages update with recommended drink names. It seems like everyone in Peterborough heads to the annual Beer Festival so make sure you don’t miss out yourself.
FUN
FACTS
If you’ve never been – perhaps because the 350-plus real ales don’t appeal, then bare in mind that ciders/perries, bottled beers, wines and soft drinks are also on offer. And let’s not forget the wide selection of food, pub games, tombola, pub quiz, funfair, CAMRA shop and brilliant live music.
ABOUT
BEER
The music’s always been the selling point for me, and ESP writer Keith Dalton agrees. He explained – “I first heard The League Of Mentalmen perform at the Beer Festival and I’ve been a fan of their music ever since. I’m looking forward to discovering some new talent again this year, whilst of course trying out a few new ales.” Others heading to the festival for the music this year won’t be disappointed. There’ll be live bands every night and on the Friday evening The Hamsters are playing one of their final gigs. Having played some 4,500 concerts over the last 24 years, this will no doubt be an emotional and unforgettable performance. Another of the many musical highlights is Letz Zep performing on the Saturday… for all the Led Zeppelin fans.
Letz Zep
Touch Stone
A few years back, a beer named after ESP Mag (Extra Special Pint) proved that you never know what you’ll find at the festival, and this year’s no exception. For the first time, real ales from France and Italy and a range of bottled beers has been increased from further afield including Australia, Thailand, Spain, Peru, Mexico, etc… I’m feeling a drinking game coming on here (a responsible one of course). So, don’t be one of the only people in the Boro not to head to the Embankment this summer. And why not take the family? After all, they don’t charge for children under 18 if with their parents. Even dogs are permitted as long as they’re kept on a lead. Unlike many festivals, you are allowed to bring picnics, tables, chairs, etc but obviously not your own alcohol! The Hamsters
JOIN THE ESP LUNCHTIME QUIZ Wednesday August 24 – Saturday 27 One of the fun daytime parts of the Beer Festival is the ESP Lunchtime Quiz… especially if you’ve already been to the bar a few times before you start! This year I’m your host on Friday and Saturday lunchtime, taking over from ESP’s Ian Gray who’ll be the quizmaster on Wednesday and Thursday, and I can’t wait. It’s fun general knowledge stuff, just £2 per team to play and there are bags of prizes up for grabs each day. Up to 50 teams take part each session and it’s on for an hour from 1pm, so ideal for your lunch break.

TWELFTH NIGHT GLEE / FEVER Get ready for another summer musical extravaganza lined-up this August. HALFWAY TO PARADISE – THE BILLY FURY STORY Now in its 14th year, the Billy Fury band are still playing live and timeless hits, and will be coming to the Cresset this September. Billy Fury became one of Britain’s best loved rock stars, and his band will be performing all the hits topped with the beautiful voice of Colin Gold. Expect all the hits from Last Night Was Made For Love, I Will, Halfway To Paradise, Jealousy and many more. You’ll also get to see personal movie footage of Billy and his band whilst the show is on, it’s full of nostalgia and will bring back that 60s vibe. It’s on September 2 at 7.30pm, tickets are £18. Box office: 01733 265705.
THE TURN OF THE SCREW Broadcast live from the Glyndebourne Festival Opera Season straight to the Stamford Arts Centre is this curious play. The story is set in a remote English country house, where everything isn’t quite what it seems as spirits from the past intrude on the living. It’s a brilliant adaptation of Henry James’ novel, and is full of plenty of twists and turns leading to devastating effects. If this sounds gripping enough to you, then head over to Stamford Arts Centre on August 21 at 6pm. Tickets are £15, box office: 01780 763203.
GOT SOUL? HEAD TO THE CRESSET A night dedicated to classic northern soul and Motown is on the cards at the Cresset this September. There’ll be two music rooms to go between, in the Soul room there’ll be East Anglia’s number one soul DJ Tony Dellar. He’ll be joined by the legendary John Manship and they’ll be doing a special twisted wheel tribute session. In the Motown room there’ll be endless tunes with Radio Peterborough soul show presenter Skip Stewart with Nigel F, Jamie Trundle plus some special guests. Tickets are £7 in advance, and it’s on September 2. Call 07950 468011 to find out more.
GET IT ON WITH T.REXTASY The only T.Rex tribute band that’s been endorsed and approved by deceased singer Marc Bolan’s family is hitting the Stamford Corn Exchange early this month – we’ve seen them and can tell you they’re just great! T.Rextasy will be recreating the music, charisma and performances of the original glam rock band, and will take you right back to the 70s. Get ready to sing your heart out to all the hits such as Jeepster, Hot Love, 20th Century Boy, I Love To Boogie, Ride A White Swan and Children Of The Revolution – to name just a few! They’ll be in Stamford on August 13 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £16, box office: 01780 766455.

It’s a night I shall never forget. “There have been so many fantastic aspects of winning the Face that I’ve not got one particular favourite. MY WORD OF THE MONTH
DEAN RICHARDS AND THE OLD TIMERS Phil Elmer of Peterborough Rugby Old Players Society (PROPS) invited me and ‘Sharon’ (aka Megan) along to ‘an evening with Dean Richards’ at Fortress Fengate. A couple of things I need to thank him for. Firstly, for dismissing pre-event doubts I had of: ‘How funny can a former England international rugby player be?’ And secondly for the chocolate toffee crunch served up as dessert (even though ‘Sharon’ managed to scoff most of mine too). MC for the night was an entertaining Kevin Sanders (he’ll have to start paying me to appear in this column) and well done to Anne-Marie and Heidi for helping to extract dosh (in a non-sinful, biblical way) from members and guests which will be re-invested into the society and Peterborough Rugby Club. The evening was supported by Peterborough Sports Aid Foundation and I look forward to the next one. Check out PROPS at www.peterboroughrugby.org.uk

BELLS AND WHISTLES BRITISH CUISINE Clarke’s Restaurant completes the re-birth of the former Mellilo’s/Pussy Galores venue following last month’s opening of North Street Bar by local businessman Lee Clarke (pictured far right). We made a toast to the success of the bar, which is furnished with items from vintage shops and auction houses and sits above the newly opened restaurant owned by head chef Mr Clarke, who tells me he’s introducing: “Sophistication and creativity to traditional British food.” Lee’s vision of jazzing-up modern British food is a bit like taking a good old reliable ‘does what it says on the tin’ Morris Minor and giving it a contemporary makeover in the hope it’ll stir your soul instead of destroying it. But this doesn’t mean he’ll be serving pie and chips on pages from Vogue magazine instead of chip paper. Lee has previously worked alongside Marco Pierre White and at The Ritz. The restaurant is situated in the old Masonic hall and Lee’s continued with his décor theme of using vintage furniture and having little or no clutter. It’s one of very few restaurants I can think of where consideration of ample eating space (tables fairly well spread out from one another) has been applied. Better still, Lee’s using local produce to create his culinary delights, plus the bread’s freshly baked and dessert is homemade. Yum. All I need to do now is give the place a try. Clarke’s is open Tuesday to Saturday with lunch from noon until 2pm and dinner from 7pm until 9.30pm. Call 01733 892681.

FASHION
From flirty, Fifties-influenced florals and flimsy tops to brights you just can’t miss, we’re hanging on to that summer vibe. It’s definitely been the season of flower power and there’s no sign of it dying off just yet! From accessories to outfits every aspect of fashion has been touched by a blooming gorgeous floral feel so you can’t go wrong if there’s a flower on your frock! Chiffon is definitely the ‘in’ thing and floaty blouses, as modelled by Lauren, enjoy a new modern take so you’ll be looking girlie gorgeous not granny! Floral trends mix perfectly with this oh so feminine fabric.
Brights have been a huge trend and now move to jeans so you can hang on to that summer feel and make a colourful impact while covering up when you need to. Denim remains a fashion staple though in all shades, whether it’s all things so very bright and beautiful or traditional denim in various hues. You can darken your colour choice as the evenings shorten but a cropped denim jacket is still ideal for those fading summer nights.

Fresh hopes and ambitions for Posh The new football season is nearly upon us, bringing fresh hopes and ambitions for Posh, back in the championship after winning promotion through the play-offs. Key to their success this season will be tough tackling Gabriel Zakuani, who’s been speaking to ESP’s Mark Shaw. It wouldn’t be unfair to say Posh fans’ excitement at their team’s return to the Championship will be coated with a tinge of trepidation. Two years ago hopes were high as Darren Ferguson’s side headed into the same league following back to back promotions. But instead of success, or even at least respectability, it turned into the season from hell. Managers came and went as Posh hit the bottom of the table, and never recovered, leading to a swift relegation to League One.
Photos: www.theposhpics.com
Gabriel Zakuani and his team-mates are determined not to let that happen again. “We believe we’ve learned from what happened and will do ourselves justice this time around,” Gabi told ESP. “We feel there’s a lot more experience in the squad this time, with people like Grant McCann, who’ve played in the Championship before and the players here who were with us last time we were in the Championship. That means the quality is a lot better. “A lot of the players have it deep in their minds how bad it felt last time. Everybody’s learned lessons from last time around, not just the players, but the backroom staff as well. We just need to believe in ourselves.
18
“We were a bit naive going into it last time around. We should’ve killed games off when we were ahead instead of leaving ourselves open.” The return to the Championship brings with it some high profile fixtures, with the likes of Birmingham, West Ham and Blackpool heading to London Road after dropping down from the Premiership. But one away fixture sticks out for Gabi – “Everyone looked for West Ham when the fixtures came out. Being a London boy, it means a lot to me. I went there with Fulham but didn’t get off the bench, so I’m looking forward to playing this time. It feels like a Premiership club.” There’ll be some new faces at London Road, with Craig Alcock arriving from Yeovil, alongside Manchester United youngsters Nicky Ajose, Ryan Tunnicliffe and Scott Wootton. Goalkeeper Paul Jones has made his loan from Exeter permanent. The big departure saw leading scorer Craig Mackail-Smith move to Brighton, someone who’ll be sorely missed – and hopefully replaced. “Someone who scores 35 goals is going to be a massive loss. But the management know what they’re doing, and they must have something up their sleeves,” said Gabi. “Craig was a great servant with us until the very last minute of last season, so we just wish him all the best.” Whatever happens over the coming months Gabi will be keeping in touch with fans through his Twitter account. He has more than 4,500 followers after pledging to give money to Comic Relief earlier in the year for every follower he added. “I love it. When I was younger there was never a way of getting in touch with the players you looked up to. But Twitter allows us to bridge that gap with the supporters, and get their reaction, whether positive or not. “It’s really great to get the support of the fans, and know they still believe in us. A good example is after we lost at MK Dons in the first leg of their play off – there was a lot of support from the fans through Twitter and that really helped.” POSH FIXTURES 6th August – home to Crystal Palace (3pm) 9th August – away to Stevenage (7.45pm) Carling Cup 14th August – away to Blackpool (3pm) 17th August – away to Millwall (7.45pm) 20th August – home to Ipswich (5.20pm) 27th August – away to Brighton (3pm) Gabi keeping his followers up-to-date

MY TOP 4 BEER GARDENS
It’s around this time people start to wind down and get excited about their summer holidays. Whether venturing abroad or staying in lovely England and visiting one of the coastal towns there’s nothing better than going somewhere different for a week or two. My three top tips for holiday goers this year are: 1. You can never be too early to an airport! There’s nothing worse than missing your flight (unless it’s the flight home!) 2. Order you currency online in advance to get a better deal. 3. You can never be too drunk on holiday!
MaMa’s 3rd Year anniversarY
1. The George courtyard – surrounded by beautiful flower arrangements and lovely decor, not to forget how extraordinary the great food is in the Garden restaurant.
The guys at Mama Liz’s are celebrating their third great year this August bank holiday! It’s been fantastic to see the venue go from strength to strength over these last three years (and survive some turbulent times) with some fantastic bands, acts and DJs performing nightly. I’m sure they’re ready for a party, and this year for their anniversary celebrations the venue will be having a beer and cider festival and their fantastic chilli cook off, which will take place from August 26–29. Happy Birthday guys! Fore more info check www.mamaliz.co.uk for all the latest.
2. The Crown courtyard
– very beautiful throughout the summer nights and especially nice to chill out in after those busy days at work! They have a great little mini bar in a van outside too so you don’t have to keep trundling inside for a top up.
More fantastic acts at the Corn Ex
3. The Lord Burghley
– great with its undercover shelter (for if we do get any of that typical British summer rain). It also has great outdoor live music over the summer bank holidays, with music from yes, you guessed it Matty Zilch And The Meizters playing there on Saturday August 27, which will be the last chance to see us this year! Come and say hello.
The Stamford Corn Exchange has more great tribute acts on offer again this month with Re-Take That performing the best songs from Take That on Saturday August 6 at 7.30pm. I went to see the real Take That at Wembley a few weeks ago and no matter how very shameful it sounds it really was one of the best gigs/shows I’ve been to! Also appearing on August 13 at 7.30pm is T.Rextasy. This tribute to one of my favourite 70s bands has been going for quite a number of years now and they really do a top show that’s more than worth a look at! www.stamford-corn-exchange.co.uk

4. The Tobie Norris – has revamped its patio area and really made the most of its compact patio adding more benches and flower pots with various areas of raised seating, even better – some are heated!

Be lip-safe this summer
Cellulite: A big FAT problem
Sunburnt lips are a no-no! Not only are they sore but they don’t look great either. So, make sure you protect your pout and look gorge this summer by following these simple rules…
Most of us have a love/hate relationship with our bodies and one of the most common complaints amongst women about their appearance is cellulite. But rest assured that cellulite can affect anyone – whether you’re flabby, skinny, young, old, male or female.
1 Unlike the rest of your skin, lips don’t have sebaceous glands so can’t produce moisturising oils which is why lip balms are so essential – and not just in the summer! 2 Use a lip balm that has an SPF like your sunscreen. SPF 15 is perfect for lips and make sure you keep reapplying it. 3 Try to avoid white balm sticks in the summer as they tend to go flaky. Instead opt for a tinted one which looks uber-glam whilst out and about in the sun. 4 A downside to lips balms is that they can melt in the sun so make sure you keep it in the shade or even in a cool bag! Here are my top three... Bobbi Brown Lip Balm SPF 15 £14 – this non greasy balm is perfect for a natural look. Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Balm SPF 15 £7.49 – super shiny and with a gorgeous watermelon flavour this is a must-have for every girly girl’s beach bag. Benefit Benetint Lip Balm SPF 15 £14 – protects, softens and gives your lips a delicate rosy tint.
It’s thought that approximately 90 per cent of women are cursed by the orange-peel effect and in Britain alone we spend a ridiculous £30m on anti-cellulite treatments. Butt (sorry, couldn’t resist) what exactly is cellulite? Cellulite is fat, water and lymphatic fluid trapped in collagen fibres under the skin. When connective tissue weakens (which can be caused by both rapidly gaining and losing weight) small pockets of fat can push through to the surface, making it visible and causing that dimpled effect. More importantly though, how do we get rid of it? Unfortunately, it’s impossible to get rid of completely however there are lots of things you can do to reduce its appearance and you’ll be pleased to know you don’t need a celebrity bank balance to do so. Here’s how…
Exercise Probably not what you want to hear, but exercise is the best weapon against cellulite. Adding muscle to your legs and bum will make it look firmer and exercise also helps improve circulation and boost lymphatic drainage meaning cells will hold less water.
Diet
The name’s Blonde... Calling all blonde bombshells! Forget brassy, orange tones and say hello to super shiny hair that’s full of lustre. If you want to look your blonde best on the beach this summer then Fudge has the answer to your prayers and can take you to double ohhhhh (hair) heaven... Clean Blonde £11.95 – perfect for locks that are looking a little brassy, the violet pigments in this shampoo neutralise harsh yellow tones, leaving hair healthy and hydrated. A Whiter Shade Of Pale £10.95 – this violet pastel toner brings out the most brilliant of blondes, soothes your scalp and adds plenty of shine. Blonde Colour Treatment Conditioner £2.49 – not only is this conditioner travel friendly, it will also give your hair a deep condition and revive your colour. Available at leading salons nationwide or visit www.fudge.com
As cellulite is mainly fat, it makes sense to reduce your fat intake. Opt for a healthy diet of lots of fruit, vegetables, chicken, fish and wholegrains, aiming to lose 1-2lbs a week. Avoiding caffeine also helps, so say goodbye to your morning coffee.
Body brushing It takes daily dedication, but the pay-off is smooth, glowing, dimplefree skin. It works by stimulating the lymphatic system, like exercise does. Use a firm body brush on dry skin before your shower, working upwards towards the heart.
Anti-cellulite creams These are more the icing on the cake and shouldn’t be relied upon to work wonders on their own but along with diet, exercise and massage they can help to improve the appearance of your skin. They plump the skin with moisture, giving a smoother look. If you’re on a budget though a normal body lotion can give you the same affect – try Palmer’s Cocoa Butter or E45 cream.
Spray tan OK so fake tan doesn’t get rid of cellulite but it does hide a multitude of sins. Although you want to disguise orange-peel, you don’t want to look like an orange so try a gradual tan moisturiser and slowly build up colour.

STEP THREE
– After throwing the best EVER party (with or without U2) people will be crying out for more live entertainment and this is where things really start getting exciting.
MY MASTERPLAN FOR PETERBOROUGH Part 1 This month I've come up with a plan to help transform Peterborough into one of the best cities in the country and get Posh into the Premiership. Sounds good doesn't it? So, here's what we do...
STEP ONE – I live in Hampton, not far from 'The Tump'. For those of you unfamiliar with it this is a large rounded mound of earth that's a focal point for the local community. When it snows, kids
I'll build 'The ESP Arena', a massive purpose-built out of town entertainment complex that'll sit slap bang on the empty land that's doing fudge all along the A1 between Peterborough and the A14 Huntingdon/Cambridge turn off. It'll have everything you'd expect – cinemas, restaurants and live music and comedy venues. A cross between the NEC in Birmingham and Wembley Arena, only bigger and better. The only major difference is that it'll serve decent food and drink at a price that won't make you feel like you're being ripped off. I'll achieve this by only allowing local food firms to do the catering (Papa Luigi, Imperial Bento, the Banyan Tree etc). There'll also be no dirty burger vans allowed in the car park stinking up the place like they do at various places around the city. In fact, I'll buy all the pitches they're currently on and replace them with three bronze statues of my favourite Peterborian residents from history. Henry Royce, who founded Rolls Royce, Frank Perkins from Perkins Engines and Nobby the tramp. I'll also buy back Craig Mackail-Smith from Bognor Regis or whoever he's signed for on the south coast, not to play for Posh, but so I can have him sprayed in gold paint standing as a human statue opposite the Boots entrance to Queensgate.
Next month: In my Masterplan For Peterborough Part 2 – I unveil a sure-fire way to get Posh into the Premiership and how to turn Ferry Meadows into a major British tourist attraction.
sledge down it, and whenever I'm feeling energetic I run up to the top of it, spread my arms out wide and yell 'DRAGO!' at the top of my voice like Rocky IV. As it's one of the most iconic pieces of land in Greater Peterborough it should be treated with the same respect as a football ground. That's why I'm proposing that the naming rights of 'The Tump' be sold off to American business tycoon Donald Trump! He loves naming things after himself and there's no way he could refuse owning 'The Trump Tump'. Plus the deal clincher is that I've noticed since it's dried out over the summer it bears a remarkable resemblance to Trump’s unique and much celebrated coiffeured combover. I estimate that naming it 'The Trump Tump' would easily raise £100 million. Obviously as this is my idea and I'm putting it down in writing I'd receive all the money – but don't worry I won't go wasting it on paving over Cathedral Square and sticking in a few water fountains.
STEP TWO – Using some of the money I'll throw the biggest party Peterborough has EVER seen… A week of live comedy and music. Starting with Peter Kay performing 'At The Top Of The Tump' (a bit like he did at the top of Blackpool Tower) followed by some other comedians. The posh one with the floppy hair, the cockney one with curly hair, and the Irish one who has no hair. We'll have gigs by U2, The Killers, The Who, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and finish with JLS. And if any of the bands aren't available I'll just hire tribute acts. (They'll only be illuminated by the streetlights along Hargate Way so no one will be able to tell the difference anyway).

Things are pretty quiet in August as the comedians are either at the end of the pier or on their hols, but book ahead for One Man Star Wars on September 10 at the Broadway Theatre. Charles Ross squeezes all the best bits of the trilogy into one night playing all the characters, fighting all the battles and even singing the music… single handedly! Then on September 15 it’s Fosters Funny Live at the Cresset with a whole bunch of stand up acts worth a look.

COWBOYS & ALIENS
Released: August 17 Cast: Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Sam Rockwell. Director: Jon Favreau.
British actor Daniel Craig switches from super-smooth spy to rugged cowboy in this sci-fi western which promises to be out-ofthis world. The newly-wed (having just tied-the-knot with fellow Brit Rachel Weisz) stars as a lone gunslinger – with no recollection of his past apart from a mysterious wrist shackle – who proves to be the last hope for the notorious town of Absolution in this 1873-set actioner. The inhabitants of the Arizona-based desert outpost don’t take too kindly to strangers – particularly iron-fisted lawmaker Harrison
Ford – but that’s soon the least of their worries when unknown ‘alien’ marauders start abducting the townsfolk one at a time. Now the stranger they rejected could just be their salvation as Craig’s Jake Lonergan, along with love-interest Ella (Tron: Legacy’s Olivia Wilde) and Ford’s Colonel Dolarhyde – look to save the world old-school style. And with Iron Man director Jon Favreau behind the camera, this could just be the perfect blockbuster to close out the summer. At least it’s not another bloomin’ sequel . . .
SUPER 8 Released: August 5. Cast: Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler. Director: JJ Abrams. What the hell is going on? The second ‘original’ blockbuster to adorn this very page in the same month? And it’s also a supernatural alien-themed abduction thriller?
All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.
Acclaimed Star Trek and M:I 3 director JJ Abrams helms a pretty-much unknown cast as a group of kids witness a train
crash while making a ‘super 8’ movie in a sleepy Ohio town in the late seventies. But when unusual disappearances and unexplained incidents start occurring, a local deputy (Chandler) suspects the crash wasn’t an accident and investigates the creepy phenomenon causing havoc in his community.
With Steven Spielberg on executive producer duties, it already has a Close Encounters Of The Third Kind look to it, but with generally favourable reviews Stateside this could well be one of the surprises of the summer.
THE RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Released: August 11. Cast: James Franco, Idris Elba, Andy Serkis. Director: Russell Wyatt. Okay, so this may be a sequel of sorts, but at least they’ve taken the dormant franchise in a new direction with an ‘origin’ storyline – and given it a bloody long title so you’re under no illusion to what it’s about. James Franco plays ‘God’ by taking his genetic tampering too far by increasing the intelligence of apes in present day

San Francisco – that leads to an uncontrollable uprising of the monkey variety. With Andy Serkis (just like he did with King Kong) aiding groundbreaking visual technology from the team that made Avatar, the special effects – if nothing else – look absolutely top notch. And the latest trailer looked very decent too.
Let’s just hope there’s been no monkeying around with the script too.
ALSO OUT: Smurfs 3D (August 10); The Inbetweeners (August 17); Spy Kids 4D (August 19); Conan the Barbarian (August 26); Final Destination 5 (August 26).

F.E.A.R. 3 (360/PS3/PC) Out now You really have to be fearless to stand out in the congested first-person shooter market – but this noble effort falls just short. As a fan of the series this is reassuringly more of the same – with competent single/co-op modes and a noteworthy score system – but its linearity and bland (although intermittently jumpy) storyline really prevents it from battling with genre leaders. But its scare-inducing background pushes this ahead of middling fare – and is still one of the best in its field this year.
#####
RED FACTION: ARMAGEDDON (PS3/360/PC) Out now
When a sequel struggles to better its acclaimed two-year-old predecessor it really has to be cited as an apocalypse-sized disappointment. Despite the still impressive destruction engine (for blowing stuff up) and fantastic choice of weaponry – the instantly forgettable ‘Mars underground’ story makes a playthrough an extremely linear chore. The end of the world has never been so boringly repetitive – hardcore fans only apply.
#####
SHADOWS OF THE DAMNED (360/PS3) Out now
Rising from the darkness of hell this might just be one of the surprise packages of the year so far. This retro Gears Of War/Resident Evil hybrid shooter/adventure is potentially a cult classic with its intoxicating boss battles, stunning soundtrack and countless surprises – complete with innuendo-laden dialogue. It does have a slightly dated and clunky feel, but this is a refreshing game with attitude.
#####
VIRTUA TENNIS 4 (PS3/360/WII/PC) Out now Thanks to Ian Hilling and Andy Clucas for contributing to this month’s reviews.
This is the simple arcade cousin to Top Spin’s more acclaimed sim-based effort – but as a pick-up-and-play between friends it’s great fun. Sadly not a lot has improved in terms of graphics, roster and side games since the last version – but the basic mechanics are tried and tested. The motion-controlled functionality is passable, pretty much like the game, which is the gaming equivalent of Andy Murray – it tries hard but isn’t quite good enough.
#####
UFC: PERSONAL TRAINER (360/PS3/WII) Out now
Games like these really come down to how seriously you’re going to take it – and if you do, this delivers with some intense training programmes. The UFC-influenced workouts really do supplement a healthy lifestyle – with Kinect’s superior hands-free functionality making the 360 the best version – but training instructor voice and animation problems undoes some of the good work. Although not quite a knockout, it’s up there with the best as an interactive health tool.

DRIVE ANGRY (18) Out now Nic Cage continues to grind out films by the dozen – and this gory, highoctane thrill ride isn’t as bad as some of his other recent outings. This does exactly what it says on the tin, as rock-hard felon Cage goes on a bloodthirsty rampage for his last shot at redemption, to save his murdered daughter’s child from a vicious cult – with red-hot waitress Amber Heard by his side. Squarely aimed at the male demographic, this is serviceable stuff, if only just.

paparazzi Caught in the act? SUMMER IN THE CITY The summer fun’s continued (despite the weather) and the ESP Paparazzi have been out an about capturing you all in the act of having a great time. Chris Brudenell and Mike Harris hit Central Park which was packed with thousands of Peterborough Festival goers keen to see the cabaret acts and bands like the Magic Numbers live on stage. Pep Cipriano popped down to Deepings Rugby Club Beer Festival and boy do the guys like their real ales! As it was ladies day though there were plenty of girlies enjoying a Pimms and the live music had everyone rocking. The Peterborough Rugby Old Players Society (PROPS) however, had organised a very different event which Pep also dropped in on – a fantastic sportsman’s dinner with former England international rugby player Dean Richards.

CELEBS
Pixie Lott Taking a break from recording her album due for release in November, Pixie Lott chatted to ESP’s Susan Saunders about her music and newest single All About Tonight, her love life and fantasy feasts… To date, Pixie’s sold over one million albums with her debut album going triple platinum. She’s had two number one singles and has spent an enormous 93 weeks in the charts. Now she’s set to hit the charts once again with her new single All About Tonight – “It’s a party feel, good uptempo track,” Pixie enthuses to me. “About all your girls going out and having fun, getting ready and forgetting about someone in a past relationship. It’s like, dancing on the tables, having fun!” From what I can gather, the track sounds exactly like her; cool, fun and girly! Having achieved so much music wise already, I wondered if Pixie still felt excited about releasing her new album? “I’m really excited about it. I’ve been working on it since January and it seems like ages since my last album. I’m excited to get it out there and see what people think. It’s a bit more mature because when I was working on my first album, I was 14. Although the first few tracks are up tempo, the feel is slightly different to before. “I don’t know which song in particular is my favourite from the album as it’s not finished yet but I tend to prefer ballads.” So what prompted Pixie to be a pop star? “I wanted to be a singer for a long as I can remember. We’ve got family videos of me aged three singing and I always used to sing at family parties. I really couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I’m so lucky because some of my friends are still unsure about what they want to do now and because I’ve always known this is what I wanted to do, I could reach towards my goal and put everything into it.” Perhaps Pixie’s soulful voice has been enhanced this way due to years of listening to her favourite musical influences.
“I used to listen to Mariah, Whitney and Stevie Wonder. All my favourites that my mum brought me up listening to,” she explained. “Stevie Wonder featured on a track from my last album playing the harmonica, which was amazing. It would be really incredible to have the opportunity to duet with him too.” Comforted by my reassuring and very realistic ‘what if’ scenario that Stevie Wonder might pick up a copy of ESP and agree to duet with her because of our interview, I felt my work was almost done. Perhaps I’ll be a motivational speaker for my next job! Making the most of my journalistic right to be ‘nosy’, I thought I’d ask what the track Broken Arrow was about. “It was about a relationship I was going through at the time,” she revealed. “I think it’s great to write about personal experiences as then the sound is more honest. I was 19 at the time of writing it but by writing about things I’m going through, then other girls my age are probably going through the same thing so hopefully people can relate to my music.” Pixie told me that she gathers opinion on her tracks from her nearest and dearest too, including her boyfriend as their thoughts are really important to her. Not wanting to descend into a spiral of deep questions, I wanted to know, most pressingly, who would attend her fantasy feast, past or present. “Edie Sedgwick (American actress, model and socialite), so I could see what she was wearing. Music wise, I’d have to have Mariah, Stevie, someone who knows how to have a good time like Kesha and then Ashton Kutcher.” In her spare time, Pixie does all the normal things that ‘us’ girls like to do, like going to the cinema, watching TV and catching up with her friends. But her music career dominates her time of course so I wonder what she next wants to achieve. “I’d really like my next album to do well because you never know if people are going to like it but I always think that if you try your best, it’s all you can ask for. I’d also like to do an arena tour and continue working on my clothing label (Pixie Lott for Lipsy).” As I left her to get back to her busy day of recording and writing tracks, I marvelled at how super talented she is but also how genuinely lovely she seems! All About Tonight is released on September 4. www.pixielott.com

recipes in France. Eggs are high in good protein, Vitamin K and B vitamins, they’re also a source of Vitamin D and more. RATATOUILLE – a dish made from a blend of tomatoes, aubergines, garlic and onions and lots of good herbs, high in fibre, Vitamin C, antioxidants, potassium and more. Can be used as a side dish. Whilst the French can rightly boast over their delicate sweet pastries and cakes, one healthy addition that you will find in typical French homes is the fruit platter at the end of a meal (some with cheeses). Fresh fruit chopped and served on a platter does have more appeal than grappling with a bit of fresh fruit from the fruit bowl!
France
The French love their food, not just for the food itself but for the social aspect; meals taken at lunch or dinner are generally taken slowly with friends or family. Their meal times last longer than our quick meals on the run or in front of catch up TV. They savour the food; they know that a meal which is eaten slowly and in the presence of good company where all your senses are alive is digested far better than one taken on the run under stress!
Local nutritionist Karen Devine continues her culinary trip around the world, and as it’s holiday time focuses on another favourite – France!
CHOCOLATE – of course I can’t end my column without mentioning chocolate which the French adore and enjoy in many sweet dishes. Dark chocolate contains good levels of flavanoids and magnesium. It’s a treat you’ll find in most French homes.
This month I wanted to take a closer look at the way the French eat, after all, the French are passionate about good food, the country’s known for its fine dining and of course many famous chefs are French. If you’ve ever popped over the water to France I’m sure you’ve enjoyed the French breads, pastries and various cheese and meats all glugged down with some good French beer or wine.
Enjoy the summer, Karen For more information on health and wellbeing go to my website www.karendevine.co.uk
The French simply love their typical foods and make it a high priority in their lives. Of course like every other cuisine there are unhealthy aspects (which can be made healthier) but they also eat a high level of fresh fruit and vegetables as we can see: CRUDITES – a typical French appetizer consisting of fresh raw chopped veg usually carrot, celery and pepper. A great way to start a meal bringing the ‘raw’ into your diet needed for extra nutrients and enzymes to help digest food.
SWAPS
RED WINE – the French use a number of different flavourings in their foods from garlic, onions, leeks and herbs but one that’s used frequently to flavour foods and to drink with the meal is red wine. This has many health benefits (taken sensibly) which may aid in digestion. The French have one of the highest fat and cholesterol intakes and yet seem to have a lower risk of heart disease. This may be due to the consumption of red wine with a meal (a glass not a bottle!). Red wine contains many compounds that may help protect the heart but one compound which is showing up as the main player is resveratrol – which plants produce naturally to fight off attack from bacteria and other micro-organisms. The flesh of the red grape is known to be very high in resveratrol.
Try introducing some dark chocolate occasionally as your treat instead of the milk chocolate, it’s an enjoyable way to boost magnesium and antioxidant levels.
CASSOULET – this is a bean dish (stew) which is made generally with haricot beans, with the addition of duck or other meat. The French typically don’t eat many beans but this is a dish you’ll see on many a menu. Beans offer good complex carbohydrates and fibre plus they’re high in folic acid, magnesium, protein and more. THE FRENCH OMELETTE – whilst many countries have their own variation on the omelette, the French generally make them very light/fluffy and are left pale in colour. With the addition of tomatoes and herbs this is a great food to eat at any meal. Eggs are also found in many other sweet and savoury

LOCAL FOOD FOOD REVIEW
COCO Mexican Restaurant Peterborough, 01733 772266. 11 – 13 Broadway,
If you like Mexican food the team at Coco pride themselves on offering authentic, freshly prepared meals – the owners tell us you certainly won’t be served food from the freezer here! Coupled with the fact the chef has 15 years experience, and has previously worked in top London restaurants, we were keen to put Coco’s menu to the test. We popped there at lunchtime and found the service polite and fast. The Caesar salad was a healthy portion of lettuce, croutons and delicious strips of chicken – the ideal lunchtime snack. We also tried the Mexican chimichanga – a tortilla parcel filled with spicy chicken and served on a bed of rice and Mexican beans. The portion size wasn’t too big, and had just the right amount of spice and chicken, with a succulent mix of flavours. On the side we had a bowl of nachos, served with a dollop of guacamole, sour cream, tasty cheese and jalapenos – this is also a great appetizer, not too filling so it won’t ruin your main course. We finished with a very interesting dessert – a rich chocolate ice cream coated in a special Mexican batter and deep fried. Although you wouldn’t expect this to be a perfect combination of flavours and textures, it really was mouth-watering!
Monday Madness is the day where you can get 25 per cent off your final bill, and Tuesdays you can eat as much as you like for £14.95. Ladies, you’re in luck too as you can enjoy cocktails for half the price on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
You could definitely go to Coco for an evening out with friends for a flavoursome meal followed by cocktails at the bar afterwards – even more so now as we spotted some great offers on the menu worth noting. There’s a mid-week special where you can enjoy two courses for £9.99 Mon-Thurs, or get stuck into three courses for £14.95, and kids eat free with every paying adult. Plus there’s a special lunchtime offer where you can select from appetisers and a main course for only £4.95.
If you don’t fancy a meal in the city centre though, you can still enjoy Mexican cuisine at home by using Coco’s home delivery service. It’s available between 6pm – 10.30pm every night within a seven mile radius, just call 01733 765562. Check out their Facebook and website for more details on current offers by visiting www.coco.uk.net. Lara Johnson
THE BULL HOTEL A fresh face for an old favourite… The Bull Hotel in the city centre has always been highly regarded – it’s the hotel of choice for visiting celebrities and has a great reputation with its four star standards. Now a new team are bringing a breath of fresh air to the Brasserie restaurant with a new menu and a more modern feel. If you had preconceptions that the Bull was great but possibly a little stuffy and even expensive, think again! Head chef Jason Ingram has 24 years experience in the industry and is launching a fabulous new menu. With mains starting from as little as £9.95 this really is fine dining that’s accessible to all. “I’d like to see us achieve an AA rosette but still keep the restaurant within everyone’s reach,” explained Jason, “so we’re offering high quality food and presentation but in an affordable way.” Using several local suppliers, fresh ingredients and catering for all special requirements, Jason aims to make sure your dining experience is perfect. “I like to think every dish is a signature dish for me,” said Chef Jason, “but we have some fantastic steaks and homemade burgers through to hand-battered fish or pan fried sea bream, gorgeous desserts like sticky toffee pudding and a range of local cheeses.” Meanwhile new food and beverage manager Jason Parsonage is on a mission to modernise the feel of the restaurant so look out for several changes. “I’m creating a new ambience in the Brasserie with some added wow factor. We’re changing the presentation of both the food and the settings and will really uplift what’s on offer. It’ll be five star service at four star prices that everyone can enjoy.” Pastroudis café at the hotel has a range of light bites and sandwiches but we really like the

sound of their afternoon tea which Jason’s adding a wider range of cakes to. The hotel is available for conferences, weddings and events and you can dine from breakfast through to evening meals so there’s always a reason to drop by. Our Face of ESP Lauren Hughes recently enjoyed a fantastic dinner, bed and breakfast prize at the Bull Hotel – it was her first stay there and if you haven’t paid a visit to the Bull before, now’s the time to try out that new menu!

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…
I’m looking forward to September 3 because there’s the chance to mark the 25th anniversary since the untimely passing of rock legend Phil Lynott of Irish band Thin Lizzy. The event’s called Dedication 8 and features four rock bands mainly playing songs from the great man’s repertoire. Boys Are Back in Town, Jailbreak, Whiskey In The Jar will feature as the audience is joined by Phil’s mother Philomena Lynott. Dedication 8 event organiser, Terry Naraine told me – “Philomena will make the trip from Dublin to be at the show as our very special guest on the night. She loves Peterborough, and it’s the third time she’s attended Dedication. She’s recently written her 2nd book about the life of Phil, which has been the best selling book in Ireland for the last 15 weeks. The evening is in aid of the Roisin Dubh Trust (Black Rose named after a Lizzy track).” Bands on the night are headliners: Cold Sweat from Peterborough (doing a Thin Lizzy Live & Dangerous themed set), Copperhead (special guests from Oakham), Kick Back from Peterborough and UnderCovered from Wisbech.
It’s time once again for the Peterborough Beer Festival on the Embankment from August 23 – 27 which means fine ales and fine bands. Full coverage of what we can expect at this year’s event is on page 8 of this issue.
Dedication 8 is being staged at the Royal British Legion, Broadway, Yaxley on September 3 and starts at 7.30pm. More info and advance tickets are from either the Yaxley Legion or 07796 250071.
I always go to the festival because socially you bump into people you haven’t seen for a while (possibly since last year’s Beer Festival!) and I always eagerly scan the acts appearing in the Live Music tent. Headliners on Friday are the Hamsters in their final year.
Acoustic gigs have become very popular recently and some fine exponents of the acoustic art can be seen at Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge in Stamford in early August. Headlining is Mark Morriss , lead singer of the Bluetones. The band achieved huge success in the Brit Pop era, amassing three top 10 albums and a hatful of successful singles. And after 18 years together The Bluetones have decided that after their September tour, they’ll disband. Leading up to the farewell tour Mark is giving us a chance to see things to come in the future with this solo appearance. He’s supported by two of the area’s very own talents. John Quinn singer/songwriter of The Fleeting Minds (and formerly Mighty Quinn), who recently supported The Rifles on their 2010 acoustic tour. John will be performing tracks from The Fleeting Minds debut album Never Mind Tomorrow, due for release on IAMJ Records later this year. The strong line-up is completed by Richard Gombault. Best known for the Stamford based Punk pop trio Midget. The three can be seen on Saturday August 6. For tickets and further information contact Mama Liz’s or log on to www.wegottickets.com/event/125132
Pus the headliners on Saturday are Letz Zep. The original Led Zeppelin is the band above all others that I wish I’d seen live but never did. I’ve also managed to miss every one of Letz Zep’s previous appearances in Peterborough through one reason or another. They’re described by many as the best in the business. For example, Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson said of the band – “If you closed your eyes you really could imagine that it was Plant and Page up there. And if you opened them again the illusion didn't really go away.” A gig by Letz Zep fully portrays the full scope of the music of Led Zeppelin and I’m not going to miss that in the atmosphere of the Peterborough Beer Festival!

This year my definite favourite night is Saturday August 27 because it’s a welcome return to the Beer Fest for Retrolux – Ian, Dave and Fozzy, who’ll do their usual brand of rock from the Foo to The Who. You might even catch a special appearance from ‘Del Boy’.
I went over to the Oundle Festival recently and noticed that the normally quiet town has a treat in store for local new music fans. Indie rockers THREADS will be playing at the Rose And Crown in the centre of Oundle, on Friday August 12. Strong support will be coming from SixtyFiveMiles who are fronted by Simon Nelson (formerly Milltown Brothers) in what promises to be a great night. THREADS have been very busy recently because in addition to live gigs they’ve been working hard on recording their debut album – Surgery.
Big congratulations to Fighting Karma, a five-piece band made up of pupils from Ken Stimpson Community School in Werrington, who won the Battle of the Bands as part of the recent Peterborough Festival. Fighting Karma beat off strong competition from a number of local bands in one of the showpiece events of the Festival. Our photo shows the band with their winners trophy and Peterborough’s Youth MP Kamal Hyman, who told ESP – “The calibre of the bands was excellent. Every act was really talented but Fighting Karma had that special something. They were 100 per cent original and every song they performed was completely their own. There was a real connection between them and you could see how much they loved performing together.” Hopefully we’ll be seeing more of this young band on the local music scene.

I always get kinda
...twitchy in August, you know that there are only two festy months left to play out in. However it does mean you have nailed July and as per usual we found a couple of fields to enjoy ourselves in. The Maverick Festival Imelda May was superb. The setting, Easton Farm Park in deepest Suffolk was sublime. Woodland walks a huge farm pond, farm animals knurdling around and beautiful old buildings provided a very calm backdrop to some great music. The Orbitsuns played two blistering sets of rockin’ garage country, Rich Hall did a great stand up hour (albeit musically themed) and The Travelling band blew everyone away on Saturday afternoon. Their CD which I duly bought after the set and got signed in some vain hope it’ll be worth a few quid in years to come, is already my album of the year and to be fair unless anything else magical comes along it won’t be beaten. Take a look at www.thetravellingband.com for more dates and to buy the CD which I hope you won’t be disappointed with. Maverick Festival next year? Definitely – it’s up with the best. Rock n Bike Fest had a new and improved home this year and again they put on a brilliant weekend which did exactly what it said on the flyer. Rock, in the shape of my favourite band of the weekend, an amazing nine-piece tribute band Aynt Skynyrd and bikes everywhere with enough chrome to cover a small Cotswold village. Thanks guys it was great to be around so many fantastic people. August then. One I have been to and mentioned in previous years has changed dates and venue this year so I can’t get to it which is a real shame because the line up is cracking. Rhythm Festival moves to Biggleswade, just down the road really, and the line up is amazing. The Buzzcocks, Dodgy, Hazel O’Conner (performing Breaking Glass live) Nick Lowe, Imelda May, Jack Bruce and The Norman Beaker Band, The Oysterband, Toots and The Maytals and the living legend that is Steve Cropper. They’re just the headliners – there are dozens more bands playing but listing them all would be lazy journalism and a bit boring for you to read, however the aforementioned were worth listing to give you a flavour of the quality and depth Jim Driver has lined up for you this year. Set at Old Warden Park and costing £110 for the weekend it aint bad value considering who’s playing. Don’t fancy camping? You can have on site B&B for £75 for three days, you now have NO excuses (Dick Cartmel!) Find out more on www.rhythmfestival.com, it’s on August 26 – 28 – do it! See you in September… Noooooooooo!
