SUPERCLUB LAUNCHES IN CITY The August bank holiday is set to be the busiest ever as one of the city’s biggest promoters and DJs join forces to launch Superclub night on Friday August 24. There’ll be three different club experiences all on one night and in one destination at Edward’s, Flares and the Red Room. Edward’s hosts OfficialClubNights, with Kiss FM’s DJ Steve Smart launching his new residency performing live straight after his national radio show. The night features an exclusive starlit VIP area, Ibiza style dancers, laser lights and a TV crew and photographers! BEN FOGLE COMES TO TOWN TV presenter Ben Fogle is coming to town to talk about his new book The Accidental Naturalist early next month. LEARN TO PLAY THE LION KING We all know the popular musical The Lion King, but now the famous West End show is hitting the local area, at John Clare Cottage in Helpston. Polka Dot Theatre have built up a good reputation for their brilliant work with the community, and from Tuesday August 14 – Wednesday August 15 are offering the chance for youngsters to get involved with their production. From 10am – 4pm Polka Dot will be providing fun-filled theatre training. Family and friends can then watch the performance on the second day. FROM SALZBURG TO SOUTH HOLLAND If, like most of us, you’re unable to travel to Austria for this year’s Salzburg Festival, then all that is needed is a short car journey to the South Holland Arts Centre in Spalding. They’re providing a live satellite screening of the festival, which includes Live Opera performances to make you feel like you’re actually there. On Wednesday August 1 at 6.30pm Puccini’s La Bohème will be performed by the Vienna Philharmonic in Italian. Conductor Daniele Gatti is featuring alongside the performers Anna Netrebko and Piotr Beczala. On Monday August 6 at 6.30pm the Vienna Philharmonic will be performing Mozart’s Don Giovanni in Italian, with conductor Bertrand de Billy and performers Christopher Maltman and Annette Dasch. Finally, on Monday August 13 at 6pm Mozart’s The Magic Flute will be shown. It will be performed by Concentus Musicus Wein and sung in German. This screening will feature conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt and you’ll get to see performers Georg Zeppenfeld and Bernard Richter. Tickets for all of these screenings cost £15 or £13 for concessions. Peterborough Beer Festival

One thing I have learned during our random ESP nights out is that the team can drink! So, don’t be surprised if you see the likes of Jess Lockhart and Steve Gonzalez at Peterborough’s 35th Beer Festival. The week of August 21 – 25 sees the return of the biggest bar in the Boro, with facebook and Twitter constantly updated with talk of ales, ciders, perries and wines. It seems the entire city attends this annual event so make sure you don’t miss out yourself.

A few things make the Embankment’s much loved event different this year. A popular decision for drinkers who return year on year is that the layout has returned to the original horseshoe shape. Other changes include reduced entry prices and even cheaper (free to CAMRA members) lunchtime sessions. Also for the first time, pizza will be available amongst the other selections of food – something I’m sure will please our Man About Town Pep Cipriano. Regulars will also be pleased to hear that plenty has not changed. As always, amongst the 350 plus real ales, there’ll be traditional pub games, quizzes and some really great live music every night. Go and browse (and buy) items of interest from the licensed trade. • CAMRA e-petition: This year, we’re all invited to sign the CAMRA e-petition to help secure an MP’s debate on the beer duty escalator. This led to record price hikes on the price of beer. • Exotic Fruit Bottled Beer: As well as having several huge real ale, cider and wine bars, the Peterborough Beer Fest also has well stocked bottled beer bars too. Beers from all over the world are there and so are the exotic fruit beers which always seem to sell out before everything else! • The RNLI: Each year, the Peterborough Beer Fest helps to raise thousands to support the RNLI Skegness lifeboat station. Last year Peterborough CAMRA was proud to attend the launch of their brand new lifeboat Peterborough Beer Festival IV, funded entirely by the generosity of festival goers over the years.

ITALIAN FESTIVAL RETURNS Peterborough’s set to live la dolce vita next month! TV chef Gino D’Acampo

The city’s Italian Festival is ready to return and this year it’s running over two days with some very special entertainment lined up that everyone should enjoy. The girls in the office are particularly excited about the Italian hot dish himself – lovely TV chef Gino D’Acampo – who’ll be making a special appearance on the Sunday. This event just gets better and better and with two days of celebrations there’s now even more reason to go along on September 15 and 16. There’ll be an Italian market and delicious, authentic Italian food tasting by local restaurants including Mattoni, Riva, Ristorante Fratelli, Barista, Papa Luigi and The Pasta Shop. There’s also an Italian sausage making demonstration and homemade wine tasting.

Papa Luigi will be running a children’s pizza making session as well as selling pizza slices in aid of the Mayor’s charities. Plus their ever popular Pizza Eating Championships make a return – always worth a watch! There’ll be some fabulous Italian cars, bikes and scooters on display (including our very own Man About Town’s Vespa!) for enthusiasts to drool over. You’ll be amazed by the skills of the flag throwers from Florence and marvel at the cookery skills of Italian chefs from Forli who’ll be giving demonstrations. One of the main highlights will be a pop up restaurant by Riva which will set up in Cathedral Square on Saturday night when you can dine accompanied by a live string quartet and Italian song performances. WET AND WILD IN DEEPING! It’s expected that this year’s Deepings Raft Race, on Sunday August 5, will be bigger and better than ever! Olympic-themed rafts will race down the River Welland, cheered on by thousands along the banks. Whether you’re a fan of Steve Redgrave and keen on rowing or just want to idle away a few hours watching some great sporting action (and athletes in lycra!) – get yourself along to the annual Summer Rowing Regatta in Peterborough.

The event at the rowing lake on Thorpe Meadows on August 11 and 12 is an entertaining weekend, even if you don’t know one end of an oar from the other. It’s fast paced with races every few minutes and you can cheer on the Peterborough Rowing Club teams as they take on competitors from all over the country.

BMX CHAMPS HIT TOWN Calling all BMX fans! Are you ready to see the pros in action? Peterborough Phantoms BMX Racing Club are hosting a National British Cycling race at their track in Orton Malborne, just two weeks after BMX racing appears in the London 2012 Olympics. Taking place over the August bank holiday, the action begins on Friday August 24 when the competitors arrive at the track to practice. The racing starts on Saturday August 25 from 12.30, where 700 of the country’s top riders are expected to battle it out for the title of National Champion. This track is well known for being one of the best BMX racing facilities in the UK. Mark Campbell, Secretary of Peterborough Phantoms BMX Club, told ESP – “The atmosphere is sure to be electric.” On the Sunday evening after the racing, an end of series party is being held in a marquee next to the track. OUR STAR JOINS THE HIKE Do you want to get involved in an interesting new fundraising event hitting Peterborough? Formerly known as the Midnight Walk, the Starlight Hike is a great way to get a group of mates together and have a laugh, while raising money for Sue Ryder at the same time. And great news, men can now participate in the hike, too! As ESP proudly supports the event, the Face of ESP, fitness instructor Jessica Lockhart, is limbering up to get involved. Taking place on Saturday September 8, the Starlight Hike is a brilliant excuse to dress up and have fun with your friends. The 10k sponsored hike starts and finishes at Peterborough Greyhound Stadium. Leading up to the start of the race, local singer Murray Hockridge from BBC’s The Voice will be performing to get the crowd buzzing. Murray grew up close to Thorpe Hall, where the Sue Ryder hospice is, so was eager to get involved with the event.

The Ruddy Duck pub in Peakirk is holding its fourth annual Beer Festival this month with a great line up of bands and beers.

Nearly 140 golfers braved the rain at The Premier Kitchens & Bedrooms Charity Golf Day at Elton Furze Golf Club, including our very own Face of ESP Jessica Lockhart, who dropped by to cheer them on. The event was held to raise money for Sue Ryder, Thorpe Hall Hospice. Despite the miserable weather on the day everyone entered into the spirit of this annual event, which was once again organised by Iain Forsythe the Managing Director of Premier Kitchens and Bedrooms and his team. The charity golf day has been staged for 15 years, becoming part of the social golfing calendar in the area and has raised thousands of pounds for local charities. Stephen Wallis part of the fund raising team at Sue Ryder told ESP – “We’d like to thank Iain Forsythe and his team for their amazing support and for organising the event so impressively against all the elements on the day!"

The beer fes (as it’s affectionately known) is always worth a visit and so is the Italian Festival, which is back for a fourth year in our city centre. I WANT THIS BIKE! A bit of Italian exotica – there’s nothing like it. Just about every biker I know would love to get their hands on a Ducati. They’re stylish, fast and unique in so many ways but best of all they have soul – a character that underpins the passion of motorcycling. This S4 RS beauty I’m drooling over is just one of more than 20 used bikes on sale at Balderston. The guys at Hampton almost always seem to have a Ducati in their used ranks but every time I get around to arranging a test ride they end up selling! What’s even more frustrating is my plan to ride this one was ruined by a random torrential downpour that decided to start just as I entered the showroom. WILLOW 2013 DIARY DATE Here’s a photo of me at this year’s brilliant Willow Festival (TWF) after having just one beer. I think the hat belonged to one of the Simmons brothers from Werrington? Oh dear. Next year’s Willow will be held on July 12, 13 and 14 and let me tell you it’s going to be even better in every way. It’s hard to believe organisers can top such a fantastic event this year but in 2013 we’re being promised at least 123 bands, seven stage areas and more bars (minus a stupid straw hat). More than 50,000 of us flocked to the Embankment and thousands more are expected next year with organisers working on ideas to attract more families. Get set for the busiest Bank Holiday event of the year, as the city’s biggest promoters and DJs join forces to launch SUPERCLUB night on Friday August 24, offering three different club experiences all on one night at one destination. Away from the city centre our photographer Mike Harris dropped by at the AMVC leaver’s ball at the Holiday Inn. The students had certainly gone to town on their outfits and the event, which included surprise fireworks. ESP would like to congratulate Ben Tomsett, the winner of a recent talent show at Holme C of E Primary School. However, Holme School’s Got Talent was not your average competition. Students had every right to get excited. The official voiceover for the event was Peter Dixon, the man behind the voice of X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent. Hosting the event was local celeb Warwick Davis, the star of blockbusters such as Willow, Star Wars and Harry Potter.

Speaking of Potter, one of the judging panel was none other than Tom Felton, the teen heartthrob best known as blond bad boy Draco Malfoy in the popular flicks.

Whilst attending Holme School’s Got Talent I must admit that I was a little jealous… the biggest name I ever got at my school talent show was Kev Lawrence! As a big Harry Potter fan I was keen to grab a few words with Tom to find out

just what he’s been up to since playing the iconic villain. Well, you may have spotted him in another bad boy role in Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, a 2011 remake of the classic favourite. Tom starred alonsgide Rupert Wyatt, James Franco, Freida Pinto and Andy Serkis. What attracted him to the role I wonder? “It didn’t take any convincing to be a part of the movie,” he explained. “I’m a massive fan of James Franco.” Spoiler alert as Tom continued… “As I died in the movie, I knew this would obviously be a one off, and wouldn’t be signing up for more of the franchise.” Tom joked – “For a sequel, I suggested a two hour flashback featuring my character but the director didn’t seem keen!” Having once heard Felton being referred to as ‘Snoop Hoggy Hogwarts’ I had to ask what this was about. He laughed – “My lovely girlfriend and publicist take

the Mickey by booking me into hotels under that name. The idea is that my name doesn’t attract too much attention, but it backfires as I have to check in as ‘Snoop Hoggy Hogwarts’. Thankfully they don’t do that anymore!” Fans of the Harry Potter star will be pleased to hear they’ll be seeing more of Tom very soon –“I’ve just come back from Serbia,” he revealed. “I did a film out there called Therese, which should be out around Christmas. And I have a mini TV series called Labyrinth coming soon, which is based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Kate Mosse. BUILDING UP A GREAT REPUTATION! The Mr. Peterborough Bodybuilding competition at Radius saw Theo Scorer from Spalding take the overall title and Aaron McCallum from Louth take the novice title. They were up against some tough competition in the regional amateur bodybuilding competition which saw some amazing athletes take part. There were several different classes on the day from novice, masters over 40s, women’s physique, junior under 21s, shirts off, a bench press competition and much more. The event was sponsored by the Fitness Station in Dogsthorpe and was organised by four times bodybuilding champion Rob Reinaldo from Peterborough, who proved this city knows how to stage a great event. Louis Smith Olympian, medal winner, world class athlete and model...

This month Louis Smith becomes the first guy to grace the cover of ESP Magazine in 12 years. We knew there could be only one cover star for us as Peterborough's local hero steps up to the plate at the Olympic Games. Sharon McAllister catches up with the city's golden boy...

When I interviewed him back then as a young guy in a competitive sport I expected him to be nothing less than cocky but was pleasantly surprised by his mild manner and measured response coupled with a friendly cheekiness. Catching up with him again just before he headed off to the Olympics I'm pleased to say that he really hasn't changed much. As the star of various TV adverts, appearances on radio and TV shows, not to mention modelling naked in Cosmo (for charity and concealing his modesty!), I was definitely expecting to talk to a more arrogant Louis now, pumped up on his sudden celebrity. But again, I’m pleased to report that despite doing handstands on a pommel horse for around 32 hours a week he still has his feet firmly on the ground.

“For all British athletes this London Olympic Games is going to be life changing.” As he set off for the most challenging competition of his career with all eyes upon him and the pressure of a country desperate for home grown winners he summed up my own conclusion about him perfectly – “I'm just a normal geezer trying to achieve his dream.” This former Arthur Mellows Village College student, who admits he could've been a little ‘naughty’ if he hadn't become focussed on his gymnastics, has become quite the poster boy of Team GB. Young, good looking and with a physique most blokes would envy you could imagine the Lucozade and BMW adverts, and modelling for Next could easily turn him into a gold medal-winning big head! But not so far at least and long may it continue.

Instead it’s still the gymnastics and the hardcore training that continues to keep him focussed. “When I'm not training I'm doing media and when I'm not doing media I'm sleeping, so it's very hands on and busy all the time but I'm able to get enough hours in the gym. “Life is very different – there's a lot more responsibility involved. You have to be a little bit more mature about how you handle situations.

e've long supported gymnast Louis Smith here at ESP, naming him as one of our Perfect Ten – our list of local heroes who we featured during our tenth anniversary year – and he’s been a special guest at two of our Face of ESP events.

“I'm still grounded, the same old Louis, just very busy that's all.” Despite spending so much time away competing around the world any suggestion of him leaving the area for good are quickly rejected and to confirm this he tells me – “I'm building my house in Helpston. I wanted to find a bit of land and build my own house and a friend of mine's dad owns some land out there. Although he’s not literally turning all Grand Designs himself he adds – “It's got little touches of Louis design in it. I've got two stained glass windows in my living room and they're going to be designs from my tattoo.” His well known body art across his back carrying his motto ‘What I Deserve I Earn’ with angel wings either side, now has the addition of a tribute to his late Nan to whom he was very close. “She was very influential on me and very enthusiastic about my career as well,” he confides.

Since winning bronze in Beijing Louis’ career has shot through the roof both in terms of his sporting achievements and his popularity with the media and sponsors, but when I ask what he’s enjoyed the most it’s not what you might expect – “The response I get from my friends and family when they say they see me everywhere and they're all looking forward to seeing me trying do well in the Olympics.

“Gymnastics is brutal” “I still feel like me, although it's fun filming adverts and meeting people I still put a lot of hard work in at the gym. “People might think I'm just basking in the glory and rolling in money but it's not that at all. I'm still spending hours in the gym every week – it's still quite demanding.” This lad from Eye admits life’s taken a bit of a surreal twist with appearances on the Chris Moyles show on Radio One something he never quite imagined. One thing he’s particularly proud of as a result of all of the publicity though has been the chance to promote the sport he devotes his life to and he’s certainly given gymnastics more prominence.

“It's been a very female dominated sport, a lot of girls get into it at school and guys have been more reluctant to get involved so yeah, any publicity is good publicity, and I like to think that all of us are doing our bit to improve the awareness of gym and how exciting it can be to watch and get involved with.”

...but “he’s just a normal geezer trying to achieve his dream” With the hours of devotion it takes to achieve Olympic standards, it fascinates me how anyone can identify their passion for one particular thing so early on in life and frankly, not get bored of it when other distractions come along later! “It's corny saying you’re living the dream,” says Louis “but it is hard to get bored of something when you're living the dream. I've wanted to be a gymnast from such a young age, I've been doing it since I was four. There are more aspects to it than just competing – you're doing something that you love. And doing it from such a young age, so many people have sacrificed their time and effort so that I can do what I do and it's the thrill, the thrill of learning new skills and elements, the thrill of having to train eight or nine weeks for a competition and then pulling your routine off and getting that satisfaction.” In the men’s artistic competition at the Olympics, Louis leads the team and with it being the London games the spotlight on all the British athletes is more intense than ever, so I wonder if the pressure this time around is overwhelming? “It's alright,” he says in a resigned tone, “we've had it for some years now. The GB gymnastics team have been doing so well the last couple of years that I think everyone's become accustomed a little bit to the pressure and expectation that the Olympic Games bring and it's all about finding ways to deal with it and to manage it. You're going to feel the nerves – it's the biggest competition we're going to do.

“It's all about trying to find ways to overcome all of those nerves and the expectation. I think I do it quite well, I try to thrive off it and just concentrate on what I need to do instead of what the public want me to do.” When it comes to winning medals has it got to be gold? “I'd be happy just to go there and do a routine clean. It's all about trying to limit the pressure and self expectation is probably one of the worst types of pressure, so I just like to set myself a goal to do a clean routine.” As the Olympics begin after years of build up and preparation it’s hard to imagine what the come down will be like for Louis and the rest of the competitors afterwards. History will be made, some sporting careers will go through the heavens while for others hearts will be broken. Louis knows he’s stepping into an arena that will change his future. “I don't think anyone's ready for what's going to happen afterwards. A PLATEFUL OF COLOUR IN 2012 Local nutritionist Karen Devine continues her theme of ‘eating a rainbow’ to gain maximum health benefits. Different coloured foods contain different natural chemicals known to protect and heal – so does your diet include plenty of colour? Hold your noses as this month Karen’s talking garlic...

It may be a tiny vegetable but garlic can boast many reasons to enjoy it in as many meals as we can . Although for convenience we have garlic powder, flakes or pastes for quickness, the fresh garlic cloves have superior benefits so the fresher the better in this case. Once you’ve peeled the garlic clove then chop or crush it and allow it to sit for 5 mins which activates the enzymes within the garlic to produce more allicin (the phytonutrients with the big benefits). You can then add it to your cooking but cooking for over 10 mins can reduce the benefits so add in extra at the end before serving. You can also eat garlic raw in salads for extra flavour.

Of the ‘white’ coloured vegetables garlic has to have a special mention. Although it is a love it or loathe it food it has some incredible benefits that we need for health and longevity. Garlic is a food that’s centuries old (it’s one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world) originally from Asia. It’s been used for medicinal purposes around the world along with being used in folklore to frighten off vampires, however if it is Robert Pattinson I’m not so sure if us ladies would want to shoo him away! Garlic contains many good nutrients in particular the cancer preventing selenium which is badly needed in many people’s diets today, along with B6 and Vitamin C but the important health benefits come from the sulphur containing phytonutrients. One of those in particular is called allicin (there are many others) which may contribute to the numerous health benefits that garlic offers us, some of those that are well documented are focused mainly on cardiovascular health such as – Lowering of triglycerides (fats in the blood) Lowering of cholesterol Lowers inflammation which can reduce the risk of arterial disease Anti blood clotting Lowering blood pressure Garlic may also help with iron metabolism and is a powerful antioxidant as well as being known to have anti-viral, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties.

There may be many garlic supplements out on the market but eating the ‘whole’ garlic as nature intended is far superior. Some supplements do not offer the same protection as the fresh garlic due to the lack of the allicin phytonutrient, however there are some good manufactured garlic capsules that do have some merit. VisitScotland.com has basically been given a free featurelength advert as luscious highlands are brought to life with jaw-dropping computer-generated landscapes that’ll make you pine for a journey to our northern cousin – if it actually stops chucking it down!

This adventure tells the story of skilled archer Merida (MacDonald) – daughter to Scottish King Fergus (Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Thompson) – who loathes the thought of being pressed into an arranged marriage. But when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (Julie Walters) in defiance, the kingdom’s turned upside down when Merida is granted an illfated wish – and she has to discover the true meaning of bravery to undo a beastly curse. In this moment lies the weakest point of the film, as the main plot point somehow seems patch-worked into a seemingly thin storyline. But the heart at the centre of the movie –

mainly in part to fantastic core characters and the truly charming surroundings – pulls it through its shaky middle third to provide a good ol’ yarn full of wit, wisdom and just plain good fun. It falls a shade short of Pixar’s original best – such as Toy Story, Up and Finding Nemo – but sits comfortably alongside the upper echelons of their bountiful library of animated marvels. Compared to the rest Disney/Pixar are still King of their domain – as this hits its target with considerable ease.

Undoubtedly the surprise box office hit of the summer around the globe is this crude comedy from the mind of Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. He provides the voice to a teddy bear that has come to life – as the result of John Bennett’s (Mark Wahlberg) childhood wish – but their friendship is tested when John’s girlfriend wants more from their relationship.

After the massive success of the initial Matt Damon-inspired trilogy, The Avengers’ Hawkeye Jeremy Renner reignites the franchise as a CIA operative whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films. Edward Norton and Rachel Weisz join an impressive cast with acclaimed director Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton) at the helm.

Sly Stallone and his team return for another explosive outing after his project to combine most of action cinema’s greatest stars was a massive success two years ago. Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris and Liam Hemsworth join, with bigger roles for Arnie and Bruce Willis – who reportedly double-crosses the team – and Con Air’s Simon West is on directorial duties.

SPEC OPS: THE LINE (360/PS3/PC) What initially seems like a Gears of War rip-off in army clothing – turns out to be one of the most though-provoking games in quite some time. As a leader of a Delta Recon Team, you’re sent into Dubai to track down survivors after thousands of lives were lost when a sandstorm swept through the city – but what you find is a compelling first-person shooter with some of the most gratifyingly balanced achievements in quite some time. There are a few flaws – the cover-system can get a little tedious – but for the most part this is top notch stuff, with a story that brilliantly oversteps the line.

LONDON 2012: THE OLYMPIC GAMES (PS3/360) The hype surrounding the London 2012 Olympics has spilled onto your computer screen – and for once, it's pretty good fun. There are all the usual track and field events, including the exciting 400m, plus swimming, diving, shooting, gymnastics and a spree of more low key sports, which sometimes deliver the most satisfying experience – particularly with the crowd cooking up an atmosphere not seen in other athletics titles.If the London games aren't up to scratch, we can console ourselves with perhaps the best Olympics game of all-time instead.

Like the aforementioned Spec Ops, this is another game that rips-off several games from the shooter genre but again, is surprisingly good. With a bit of Dead to Rights, Dead Space, Singularity and dare I say it, Gears again, this is noteworthy fare – and I stuck with it right until the end because it was a little different. Arguably the sometimes clunky gravity controls don’t compliment the all-round decent shooting experience as an alien race invades Vanguard City, but with a bit more honing this could’ve been great, instead of simply good. But there’s still a great feeling – when you’re shooting on the ceiling.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (PS3/360/WII/3DS/DS/PC)

Hot on the heels of the blockbuster movie, the webslinger makes a notable console return. Set as an epilogue to the film, you’ll tackle such comic-book foes as Rhino and Iguana – with the combat owing much to the likes of Rocksteady’s Batman game and Activision’s own [Prototype] franchise. But although it doesn't quite live up to the 'amazing' tag, the latest Spidey offering is largely enjoyable – with a wealth of collectables – and with around ten hours of web action this outing is far better than Spider-Man’s last woeful Edge of Time effort.

ICE AGE 4: ARCTIC GAMES (360/PS3/WII/3DS/DS)

Don’t we just love movie tie-ins? Especially the ones that make use of Kinect. If you detect a hint of sarcasm you’d be right, because this seemingly hastily cobbled together effort of – the okay(ish) sledging and curling to extremely woeful assault course and leak-plugging – mini-games is strictly for families who like the series. There are a few merits – and easy achievements – to be had, but this game is riddled with cracks, mainly hampered by sometimes completely unresponsive Kinect controls.

Review For the second month in a row this round-up is headlined by a massive box-office flop – this time action thriller Battleship ## (August 20) taking the plaudits. Again it’s John Carter himself Taylor Kitsch who finds himself tagged with a second dud, starring alongside Liam Neeson and Rihanna in this movie based loosely on the Hasbro strategy game. Talking of playing second fiddle to the box office, look no further than the Julia Roberts’ comedy-tinted Mirror Mirror ## (July 30) – the disappointing first Snow White adaptation out this year. A lean edition’s wrapped up by John Cusack’s underwhelming Edgar Allan Poe-based thriller The Raven ## (July 30), Mamma Mia star Amanda Seyfried’s predictable sisterkidnapping drama Gone ## (August 13) and Zac Efron’s marginally better romance The Lucky One ### (August 27) – which sees a soldier return home to track down a mysterious woman in a photo he found. Fortunately it’s not quite as creepy as it sounds.

Festival season’s drawing to a close with some real crackers. Andy has his guide to the very best… It’s been a damp old do so far this summer but good news that the jet stream has cleared off back up north and we should be into the sunshine. We’ve had some interesting times in the wet, Curious Yellow party at The Plough being a classic example of how a couple of hundred people with the mind to have a good time don’t give a hoot about the weather. Happy smiley people, great music, a few random sofas dotted about the place and not an angry thought or deed for miles. Kind of how Secret Garden Party used to be before it bank rolled itself.

So what delights do we have in August? Seventeen years strong the small but perfectly formed Thorney Charity Music Day organised by the ever happy Andy Stuffins will be a great place to spend a few hours watching some great local and regional bands. Birmingham based band The Platforms will having you throwing some mum and dad shapes to their great set of 70s and disco tunes and may get you wearing afros too. My favourite goat boy rockers Grounded will be playing some classic rock with a bit of punk thrown in whilst you can get all heavenly with The Peterborough Community Gospel Choir. Retrolux, Irene’s Secret and On The Ceiling will also be providing quality sets to while away the hours. All the bands should be

Over at Leicester’s De Montfort Hall it’s Summer Sundae time so expect some great artists there including Asian Dub Foundation, Billy Bragg, Adam Ant, Death In Vegas, Django Django and the bloody amazing Magic Tombolinos who we saw at The Great British Folk Weekend who blew us, and the rest of the crowd, away. The festival is set in the grounds of the hall and Victoria Park which makes a very compact festival so you’re not walking miles to your tent or between stages. There are also loads of trade stalls, kids’ stuff, chill out areas, food stalls and a great atmosphere. It also prides itself on being very eco friendly so if that’s a tick box for you, tick it. Speaking of tickets they’re available from www.summersundae.com it’s on August 17 – 19 and if you like it lively but safe enough to take the kids this is a festival for you.

Blues and Folk. I can’t list all the bands for obvious reasons but there are at least 15 that I would love to see – Booker T, Hawkwind, The Damned, The Beat, Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Peatbog Faeries, and Geno Washington just to name a few. Yes you will have all the gubbins that goes with a festival, stalls cinema, real ales and the kids stuff but this festival is, and always has been, a festival about the bands and the music. Jim Driver is a knowledgeable man when it comes to music and he manages to get the bands and artists to play at his festival. If you claim to be a music buff this is the one for you without doubt. For one weekend at least forget the local pubs, put your money on the counter and enjoy. Find out all you need to know on www.rhythmfestival.com. Farewell Paul Finally, I can’t let the fact bypass this issue that I lost a true and dear friend last month. Paul Chatham was a gentleman and one that I had the pleasure of knowing for over 20 years. He battled a short illness bravely and with dignity, just as he had lived his life. I can tell many stories of out times at Cambridge Folk Festival or the times we have sat talking in late bars after all the bands had finished. I have many treasured memories of those times. More than that I have the memory of a man who never had a bad word to say about anyone, a man who always asked of my daughter Olivia and how she was doing and a man who was kind and full of humour. Yes he did a great deal of work helping bands and promoting live music but I will remember him for the man he was and not the persona. Rest in peace Paul, Cambridge Folk Festival will keep going but it will never be the same for me, you will be missed.

Stamford CALLING RIVERSIDE JOINS BANDSTAND MARATHON The Riverside Festival organisers are still reeling from the cancellation of last month’s event which was devastating to everyone involved – and all of us who were looking forward to it! If ever you wanted to scream at the heavens it was then, as the rain washed away all hope of the event going ahead, but there is at least something to look forward to. Starting at 4pm, his set boasts unique compositions from artists as wideranging as Vivaldi and John Williams to more popular pieces by The Beatles, Queen and Lady Gaga. I highly recommend checking out his rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody online as a small taster, you won’t be disappointed!

If you’re unaware of what roller derby is allow me to explain. Roller Derby is an allfemale full contact sport which is played on roller skates! Two teams play and each team has a ‘jammer’ that tries to make it through a ‘pack’ which consists of both team mates and opposing players. If the jammers manage to make it through the pack and get round the track they have to do it all over again but this time they score points for each opposing team member they pass. Still with me? Good! The Mean Valley Roller Girls were founded by Emma and Marcell Grove from Stamford but includes several Peterborough skaters on the team. The event on the 11th consists of roller derby players from near and far playing against each other in a round robin style tournament,

MISS POSH IN OPENING HOME GAME HOLIDAY HELL HEARTBREAK Peterborough United fans are waking up today to the news that the team will begin their first home match of the 2012/13 season without their talismanic 25 year matchday mascot 'Miss Posh' to lead the team out against Millwall on Tuesday August 21. A source close to Miss Posh (real name Jess Weaver), exclusively told ESP that Miss Posh had been ruled out of the opening two home games after Jess and sister Chloe had got a really good deal on a summer holiday abroad that overlapped with the first home game. Jess was a season ticket holder for 16 years before being voted the current 'Miss Posh' by fans in 2010. Her emergence at home matches ever since has added some much needed glamour and blonde hair to the London Road pitch, (especially since Craig Mackail-Smith's girly

locks went to Bognor Regis or whoever he signed for.) It's also coincided with the club's best form in its history and many superstitious fans believe 'Miss Posh' to be a good luck omen. Sure, Mr Posh will be out twirling his cane in front of the Posh players and the bloke inside the rabbit costume 'Peter Burrows' will be waving at the kids, but if there's one mascot in world football that sums up the phrase 'the beautiful game' it's 'Miss Posh'. Her absence for the Millwall game now raises the terrifying possibility that Posh press officer Phil 'The power' Adlam may dress up in a blonde wig and a black micro-skirt. The consequences of him tottering around in high heels down the players’ tunnel doesn't bear thinking about, so instead let's go back to thinking about Miss Posh on her summer holiday and await her return to matchday mascotting duties in September.

Fifty The Posh boss has turned author and his new book From Hobby To Obsession has been outselling Fifty Shades Of Grey at Peterborough’s Waterstone’s. ESP’s Susan Saunders gets up close and personal at his book signing… It’s not every day you get to experience the charm of the Irish/rub shoulders with an Irish entrepreneur but that’s certainly what I experienced at Waterstone’s, Peterborough when I met Peterborough United Chairman and multimillionaire, Darragh MacAnthony. You don’t have to walk more than two steps before you hear someone talking about the ‘mummy porn’ sensation Fifty Shades Of Grey – people just can’t get enough. It’s a bit of a craze, that being said however, it’s a very different story in Waterstone’s where, Darragh’s book From Hobby To Obsession outsold its competition in its first week of release becoming the top seller. So, rightly or wrongly sex sells, but I wanted to know exactly what it was about the book and the man that was sending people in a frenzy for their copies (I saw one man getting six copies signed!) And how come Darragh, football chairman, property tycoon, media sensation had come over all… author?

“I’ve always fancied myself – my wife will tell you that. With regards to as an author, not really. I did a bit of journalism briefly when I was a teenager but there was no money in it [near on impossible to find a place on The Times 100 Rich list if you invest all your time in things that make no money I suppose] so I went into sales. I wrote some articles for a local newspaper and my uncle’s a published author, so I knew a bit about it. I’m not a qualified journalist as you can see from the grammar in the book but it was a great story to tell, so I thought I’d tell it.

I don’t hold back.” Outselling the saucy Fifty Shades, I wondered if there was much sauce in Darragh’s debut? “Oh no. Only in my house! My wife thinks I’m Christian Grey, honestly. She says, this woman’s written a book about you, she must have had a fling with you years ago – without the heavy S&M, you know.” Bringing it back, ever so slightly to the topic in hand, was the title of his book, the way to become successful? “Urm yeah. I think when you get into something you like and you use energy, drive, passion, desire and want for it to succeed, you become obsessed. Whether it be in business, a new relationship or owning a football club. That’s my personality – a bit obsessive – and that’s what I’m like with my football club. I’m like it in my personal life too. Always aim really high, reach for the stars and if you get to just a little bit short of that, it’s OK. The fans thought I was mad when I said I wanted us to get to the Promised Land. I’m proud of what we’ve done but hopefully it’s just the start.”

OK, so my time with Darragh wasn’t quite as I’d expected it. I try not to make up my mind about people without meeting them myself; however, somehow he wasn’t what I was expecting at all. “Some people would perceive me as arrogant, ruthless, cocky and if you read Google, you might see some bad things that some trolls have written about the property business. However, when people meet me they think I’m charming, charismatic, fun and driven.”

And Darren Ferguson famously left because…? “Because of me. We were both used to success and we like to do well – back to back promotions, getting into the Championship, where we struggled. We weren’t used to losing. We had a row that we didn’t recover from at the time and so we parted company. We then had 15 months of hell as a football club, he had the sugar [he didn’t use this word!] kicked out of him at Preston and we then discussed him returning to the club. The rest was history.”

HOLD THE FRONT PAGE, LOUIS IS GOING TO GET GOLD! It’s been a long seven years since London was announced as the venue for the 2012 Olympics and it’s hard to believe that the Games are finally here. Even the most hardened of cynics can’t have failed to be moved by the patriotism of the Torch Relay over the last few weeks and it was a proud day when the Torch arrived here in Peterborough as our photo spread shows. But in Peterborough we have an extra reason to be proud, in the shape of local boy, Olympic Bronze medallist gymnast Louis Smith. I interviewed Louis at the Face Of ESP finals a couple of years ago and he really was a top bloke. I’d love to be able to tell you more snippets about the real Louis and pass on some gossip but he let me squeeze his (fabulous) biceps at the very start of the interview and, truth be told, I can’t remember a single thing after that. All I can say is that if physique was a discipline, those pesky Chinese may as well save the air fare because Louis would have the gold in the bag. No wonder he’s ESP’s first male cover star in 12 years. Go Louis!

SEEING RED KEEPS YOUR LOVE LIFE IN THE PINK – APPARENTLY Pop star Pink reckons the secret to keeping the passion alive in a relationship is fighting. She’s reportedly said – “When you retreat to silent corners and don’t fight anymore, that’s bad. I’ve not thrown anything at his head in a while. I had 13 stitches in my hand after trying to slash his tyres. I learned from that.” Forgive me, Pink, if I don’t follow your advice on how to keep things spicy; call me old fashioned but I’d rather he bought me underwear and a bottle of massage oil…

SLOWLY DRIVING THE MOTORIST MAD So the Government is talking about reducing the national speed limit from 60mph to 40mph on rural roads in the interests of road safety. Are they kidding? I hate to come over all Jeremy Clarkson (although for his reported £3.5m salary, I’d happily don the corduroy) but how much more misery can they inflict on the humble motorist? It already costs us a fortune to fill our cars, speed cameras are everywhere and any vehicle with a bit of guts to it necessitates remortgaging your house to tax it. Seriously, at this rate we might as well just give up and get out and walk. Maybe that’s the plan, screw the economy but solve the obesity and environment crises in one. Who needs the G8 summit?

FAT CHANCE HE’LL BE SINGLE FOR LONG If ever you needed inspiration to get off your butt and lose a few pounds, look no further than teacher James Pepper from Market Deeping who’s lost over 10 stone and been named as Slimming World’s Man of the Year. He lost his weight after giving up pizza, chips and cake and has gone from an overweight, average looking kind of bloke to well, it’s fair to say (good job it’s the school holidays or he’d be in for some serious ribbing for this) a bit of a hottie . And ladies, the big news is that he’s single too so my advice is to head over to Deeping and bag yourself a date – just don’t expect him to take you out to dinne r. I gave up pizza, chips and cake in a bid to lose weight once too. Didn’t work for me though. Mind you, that could be because I replaced them with choc olate, red wine and prawn crackers. Worth a try thoug h.

THERE ARE NO GREY AREAS IN THIS BOOK

This month I’ve hardly read any newspapers, watched any television or to be honest, set foot outside. Before you ask, I’ve not been in prison, joined a commune or taken part in some kind of media avoidance experiment I’ve just, like most women it seems, been in a self-imposed exile with my nose in the book Fifty Shades Of Grey. Dubbed ‘Mummy Porn’ this racy trilogy has got the nation’s women gripped and has steamed up more than the odd pair of glasses (Pink, take note). Got to be honest though, if I hadn’t known the ‘good bits’ were coming (so to speak), I’d have given up on it by about page 40 as it all started off a bit Mills and Boon for me. But I’m glad I battled through because where Mills and Boon would’ve left you with a row of ‘…’, Fifty joins those dots, crosses the t’s and practically draws you a diagram – what is there to say but “Oh my”?! I’m just fascinated by the author though, she’s either a very lucky woman, or her husband is a very lucky man or maybe she just has a really good imagination. Either way though, I bet she had great fun researching it. I just hope she had an Ann Summers loyalty card – her Nectar points account must be amazing.

REAL ALE AND REAL MUSIC @ THE BEER FEST

I popped into The Deeping Stage a couple of weeks ago and caught Twenty4. Featuring strong female vocals from Kelly Ireland, they perform some really different numbers that you wouldn’t normally hear on a live music night. They ring the changes with songs from Adele and KT Tunstall joining U2 and Snow Patrol classics. With Kelly in the line up are Jerry Bennett on guitar, David Whitehouse on keyboards with Matt Ireland on drums and manic bass player, Kevin Herbert. It’s worth checking them out and dates in early August include The Cross Keys on Oundle Road on August 3, Grainstore in Oakham on August 4 and The Pear Tree in Stamford on August 10. August sees the 35th annual Peterborough Beer Festival on the Embankment. One of the great social events of the year in the area, it brings together hundreds of beers, ciders and wines, together with some real quality live music throughout the Festival, which runs from Tuesday 21 to Saturday 25 August. The main stage features acts every night with some afternoon entertainment on Saturday. The busy Friday night sees a well deserved headline

LIVE ON RADIO PETERBOROUGH Another stint on Radio Peterborough has just finished and it’s expected another 28 day run will occur later in the year with the hope that a permanent licence will eventually be awarded to enable us to once again have real local radio back in Peterborough. Those live music fans who listened will know how good the bands were that Claire and I had playing on Live at Lunchtime each Saturday on the station. We had The Nuggets, Brotherhoods Roundabout, Children of the Revolution and Aladdinsane. They were all absolutely brilliant and yet quite different in

when up and coming Peterborough band Amplified, take the stage. This young band recently appeared in the Midlands regional final of Live And Unsigned and are sure to make their mark on the opening night of the Festival. And what a final night it’s going to be on Saturday, with local favourites The Nuggets returning to the Beer Festival for another high energy performance of sixties music. Whether it’s pop, R&B, rock or soul the band will bring back some great memories of the era. The band were very enthusiastic about their successful appearance at The Willow, and are looking forward to more of the same back on the Embankment.
