POSH NEW SEASON

Gossip gossip@espmag.co.uk
On Saturday August 3 it’s the return of football to London Road as Peterborough United look to bounce straight back to The Championship. Last time Posh were at this level London Road became known as the home of entertainment when a record-breaking amount of goals were scored at the ground, and with Posh full of confidence after an impressive set of pre-season performances this campaign should be just as exciting. After a dismal start to the season last year Posh will be hoping to make a flying start to the league this time around with Swindon, Oldham and Crawley visiting London Road topped off with trips to Notts County and Tranmere in August. Luckily the majority of the side that finished last season on such an impressive run have remained at Posh, with only super striker Dwight Gayle departing the club for the high-life of the Premier League. The squad’s also been strengthened with the permanent signing of midfielder Jack Payne who impressed whilst on-loan last season. It looks like it’s going to be another exhilarating season of football in Peterborough.

ITALIAN FESTIVAL The sights, sounds and particularly the smells of Italy will be in Peterborough City Centre as the Italian Festival returns for its fifth year Saturday 21 September and Sunday 22 September. When August ends it does not mean the festivals do, and this one is possibly the most delicious of them all. The Italian Festival is all about giving Peterborough a taste of Italy and we mean both literally and metaphorically. Last year saw thousands of people coming to the city for this celebration to enjoy all things Italian. From authentic chefs from Forli to flag throwers from Florence. Carmella Cocozza, Cultural Events Organiser for ICA, told ESP – “People should come as it’ll make them happy! It’s important to share the Italian culture and mix it with the English.”. This year includes special guest Gennaro Contaldo, renowned Italian chef and the man who mentored Jamie Oliver, doing an hour long cooking demonstration. Peterborough’s Italian restaurants such as Mattoni and Fratellis will also be out in full force to satisfy all Italian cravings over the weekend. There’ll also be music and entertainment, including a 30 piece marching band; it’s bound to be a bellissimo weekend. For more information go to www.thefleet-ica.co.uk Verity Gibson

STARS SIGN UP FOR CITY’S LITERATURE FESTIVAL Listen up literature and poetry fans – for one week Peterborough will be hosting some huge names as it holds the second annual We Love Words Festival. Following the success of the first event last year, the festival has stepped up to another level with the organisers, the John Clare Trust, booking some of the best for the event. Michael Portillo, Germaine Greer, Alexei Sayle and Simon Armitage are just a few of the exciting names to appear during the forthcoming festival from September 20 – September 28. We Love Words will also celebrate some of the best Peterborough has to offer in poetry, with the city’s current poet laureate Simon Stabler, and previous years winners such as Keely Mills and duo Dead Poets made up of Mark Grist and MC Mixy. The festival also includes the naming of the new poet laureate of Peterborough.

Arts Fest starts this month and ESP’s Alex Jones dives in to choose some of the highlights you really shouldn’t miss… It’s here. Peterborough Arts Fest 2013 is upon us and is set to unleash an array of weird and wonderful performances on our unsuspecting city. The format is for the first time ‘on tour’ meaning artists will be spread out across the city. From street artists to concert symphony orchestras, no venue will be exempt from the madness. So if you’re ready to embrace the chaos, and want to know where to go here’s a run down of my top five not to miss acts of the festival!
JAWS @ THE LIDO – Sunday August 4 What better place to watch the escapades of a man eating super shark than at the local community pool? Of course rumours about sightings of what people are calling the ‘Lido Shark’ are just nonsense… right? Tickets for this outdoor movie screening are £5 and can be bought from the box office on 01733 207239.
GIANT LANTERN PARADE @ CATHEDRAL SQUARE – Friday September 6 An incredible display of light and design as giant lantern structures will be led throughout Peterborough, lighting up the night sky, eventually culminating in a show Upon This Rock in Cathedral Square! The event will feature at its heart a performance of a specially commissioned score by composer Jonathan Baker, and will involve a number of Peterborough residents using music and song to tell their own stories about how they and their families came to call the city ‘home’. A visual delight that’s not to be missed, parades of people carrying lanterns will start at 7pm from four corners of the city centre and converge on the Square.
FESTIVAL FIELD DAY @ CENTRAL PARK – Saturday August 10 Some of the finest Covent Garden street performers will be bringing their escapades to Central Park! These performances from noon onwards will certainly set the tone for the rest of the day which will be a myriad of colour and activity as they’ll be joined by 30 local visual artists all performing in and around the park. Then there’s Picnic in the Park from 4.30pm (just take a hamper) with interactive improvisers Scopitone who invite you to their retro disco! Kids’ film Over the Hedge will also be screened at the Park at 4pm as well as a family film being screened at 7pm which the public can vote for at www.peterboroughfestival.co.uk.
GENERIK VAPEUR @ CATHEDRAL SQUARE & BRIDGE STREET – Saturday September 7 A legendary street show which has lit up cities across Europe now comes to Peterborough as the highlight of the Arts Fest finale weekend. Named Generik Vapeur, this one of a kind troupe takes over the city centre as 20 blue figures turn our streets and buildings into a stage. It has to be seen to be believed! They're also looking for ten volunteers to join the performance and will be in residence at the Key Theatre from September 2. Think you've got what it takes? Then get involved!
BRITTEN SINFONIA @ THORPE HALL GROUNDS – Sunday August 11 Britten Sinfonia is one of the world’s most celebrated and pioneering orchestras. With amazing musicianship and an inspired approach to concert programming this performance in the grounds of Thorpe Hall is guaranteed to be something special. Tickets are £10 and can be purchased by calling 01733 207239. The good news is that 50% of all proceeds will be donated to the Sue Ryder Appeal for a new hospice which we’re backing here at ESP.

So they're my picks! Their is loads more though, including Le Fete Franglais on September 7 & 8 on the Embankment with an amazing fusion of street performance and outdoor arts like The Wheel of Death which I’ll tell you more about next month. With so much going on it’s impossible to fit it all into one article so make sure you grab a brochure or check out www.peterboroughfestival.co.uk. We will also keep you up to date with all the Arts Fest news on www.espmag.co.uk which is always packed with the latest leisure and lifestyle news. What are you looking forward to at the Arts Fest? HELMETS OFFER AT BALDERSTON
FESTA THE ITALIAN WAY
The riding fraternity finally got to enjoy their machines during a few weeks of summer in July but some of my two-wheeled mates, who shall remain nameless, actually complained it was too hot to ride!
It’ll be time to sample a taste of La Dolce Vita in September and this means a twoday celebration of everything Italian in Bridge Street and Cathedral Square.
One solution is to change your helmet and Man About Town sponsor, Balderston, are currently offering healthy discounts off all BMW AirFlow 2 Helmets. These stylish lids come with a unique AirFlow function to ensure you keep a cool head on hot days. The helmets are perfect for most bikes from cruisers to scooters. The AirFlow 2 was winner of the 'Best of the Best' Reddot design award for outstanding design quality. I’d definitely buy one but with four helmets already in my possession,
maybe I need more bikes – mid-life crisis? Well, yes, according to bike insurer Bennetts. The city-based firm commissioned a study that revealed 30% of motorcycle owners who are going through a mid-life crisis got into bikes to cope. Buying a bike made them more sociable and in some cases men reported significant improvements in their marriages and relationships. I’m sure her indoors will agree our relationship, as good as it is, could always benefit from some enhancement. So, let’s forget this year’s romantic holiday make some space in the garage for a Ducati 916, Triumph Bonneville and a Suzuki GXR 750. Happy days (with the missus of course). The Italian Festival (September 21 and 22) is now a firmly established event thanks to the Italian Community Association and support from Peterborough City Council. Italian-themed and owned city businesses also play an important part by exhibiting their products and services and it’s no surprise that food is one of the major components of this family-friendly event. Expect lots of pizza (our Face of ESP Simona’s already in training as you can
CLASSIC CAR RANT REAPS ITS BENEFITS! In last month’s column I asked why Peterborough hasn’t got its own classic car show. This month I can tell you that we will have in 2014 and I can’t wait. Entertainment will be in the form of a 30-piece marching band from Italy, singers, dancers, a magician and an accordion player. It’s tradition to have a special guest on the Sunday and this year TV chef Gennaro Contaldo follows in the footsteps of Antonio Carluccio and Gino D’Acampo who starred in previous years. Gennaro is most recently famed for his onscreen eating and cooking partnership with Antonio Carluccio in Two Greedy Italians. He’ll be doing a cooking demonstration and hopefully saving a plate for me.

WONDERFUL WILLOW AND LAUGHS AT LEVITY Yes this photo looks like I’d had a few too many but having a few sherbets is all part and parcel of festival-going isn’t it? By the way, the lady lying down in the background wasn’t dead, she moved after being subjected to my uncontrollable burping. Anyway, needless to say The Willow Festival was once again a massive success that saw approximately 82,000 people venture back and forth over the three days. This is a massive amount and a lot more than the 50,000 we saw last year. The weather was once again very kind to us and the sun continued to shine a week later when the city’s first large scale comedy event – the Levity Festival – took place on the same Embankment setting. I was looking forward to seeing Lee Nelson and he didn't disappoint. The tent was brimming with fans laughing at his every gag and top marks to the Levity organisers for securing him as well as all the other great acts that weekend. No festival of course is without its celebrities and it would’ve been rude of me not to rub shoulders with some of them in the VIP area. Naturally, they all wanted a photo with yours truly and here I am pictured with Rootsy from So Solid Crew, Terry Coldwell from East 17, Fabian Winless of former Ipswich Town FC fame, Leo The Lion from The Streets and Tanya from The UK Three Lions Charity. Terry and Leo sang us a couple of tracks they're about to record together and there's definitely a hit on the way from these guys. The Levity was a brave effort for year one – I'm glad the organisers pulled it off and I'm sure it'll come back stronger in 2014.
PEP’S LOCAL HEROES:
LOUIS SMITH It might sound like an obvious choice when I say Louis Smith joins my local hero list. His Olympic accolades are worthy of being a hero alone, but my praise for Louis goes beyond that.
Secondly, his crowning as Strictly champion shouldn’t be underestimated. I dance Latin and ballroom at intermediate level and it’s hard. But to perform faultlessly under the pressure of a national TV audience was a magnificent achievement. What made Louis’ win even more deserved was he’d never danced before compared to the majority of his competitors. To top it all, Louis struggled to take the competition seriously in the opening weeks, but thankfully his winning instinct kicked in just in time. Louis is in demand and his representatives like to sell him as if he were gold. To us he is gold and that’s because Louis remains humble
Photo: Chris Brudenell
Firstly, for all his fame and celebrity stardom, Louis has managed to remain grounded and that’s arguably down to what his mum Elaine has instilled in him from a young age.
and never gives the impression he’s a business. He’s still like the rest of us in so many ways. When I spoke to him a few weeks ago, he told me how in awe he was at the sight of last month’s ESP cover girl Michelle Keegan when she recognised him at a party. Louis can have any woman he pleases but the boy from Eye still had a weak at the knees moment. That’s what I like – Louis keeping it real and that’s why he’s our hero.

ESP’s Mikey Clarke gets ready to prop up the biggest bar in the Boro! And the nominations for ‘Best event in Peterborough’ are – the Christmas Lights Switch-on, The Willow Festival, the Beer Festival, and the Dragon Boat Race. And the winner is… the Peterborough Beer Festival (in my opinion!). With 350 draught real ales, a huge range of perries, wines, bottled beers, and soft drinks in one location, it’s no surprise that this is one of the city’s most popular events. Keep Tuesday August 20 – Saturday August 24 free in your diary and head to the Embankment. Live bands will be performing all week, and you never know – we may get some sunshine too. For the first time, the Peterborough and District Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) have introduced an Open Mic Night. Ever thought how great it would be to perform at the Beer Festival? Now’s your chance. My favourite thing about the Beer Festival has to be the atmosphere. My wife doesn’t even drink and loves to go too. Sitting on the grass, listening to great music, playing a few of the games on offer, and bumping into people you’ve not seen in ages – there’s nothing like it.
COMPETITION
As 27,500 thirsty locals attended the festival last year, chances are you were there yourself. You probably know too well what beers to drink and what bands to look out for. Here’s a few things you perhaps don’t know.
16
This year... • More than 90,000 pints of beer will be drunk over the festival, that's an average of 3 pints per session. • Over 13,000 pints of cider will be drunk. • Over 350 different draught beers from 140 different breweries will be on sale. • Organisers expect around 10,500 bottles of world beers to be consumed from the range which is sourced from 10 different countries. • About 15,000 glasses are being made in five different styles, from the traditional jug to a small pint glass. • Two pallets of toilet paper will be used during the five day festival.
• More than 300 volunteers will be used during the festival – not just to run the bars but to do catering, litter picking, man the pay gates, organise the glasses and not least to build and dismantle the festival site itself! • 1,500 metres of fencing will be erected by the volunteers to surround the site. So as you’re at the Beer Festival this year, let’s raise a glass to everyone mentioned above. Without them, this event couldn’t happen. “Cheers!” For full details on opening hours and prices, check out www.camra.org.uk See our Gig Guide for the live bands.
WIN BEER FEST TICKETS! We have 10 pairs of tickets to this year’s Beer Fest up for grabs. They’ll give you free admission any day so to get your name in our beer barrel just text or email us the word BEER along with your name, address and telephone number. Over 18s only please. Usual competition rules apply, there is no cash alternative, winners will be notified, entrants must be aged over 18, entries must be in by 16/08/2013.

Put simply, it was the biggest gathering of comedians over three days in Peterborough, performing to the largest ever audience for live comedy in the city. The ESP team were there from the opening act on Friday, the masterly under-rated Alun Cochrane to an impromptu Sunday night encore featuring Terry from East 17 who'd been in the audience, being invited on stage to sing the band’s classic House of Love. (Last heard live in Peterborough in 1993 at Orton Longueville school on the band’s school tour!). In between I was asked to be a judge for the new acts competition run by Mama Liz's comedy MC John Elson that saw Andy McBurney take top prize of £1,000, hang out with some of my old Edinburgh Fringe mates who were performing in the main tent, Carl Donnelly, Roisin Conaty, Paul McCaffrey, Matt Forde and Paul Foot (the latter agreeing to re enact the Royal Birth with me). Other comedians who proved popular were Piff the Magic Dragon, Jason Cook and Dominic Holland. Meanwhile the headline acts each night Al 'the pub landlord' Murray, Lee Nelson and Omid 'welcome to my carpet shop' Djalili were given a superb reception and got big laughs throughout. One year on from winning Bronze at the Paralympics, we gave local swimming star Harriet Lee a glamorous make-over to celebrate her passion for fashion. It’s hard to believe it’s a year since Harriet Lee and her team mates were basking in the success of London 2012 but it’s been a busy 12 months since for our local sports star. Harriet, who has Beckwith–Wiedemann syndrome, is now back to full time training at the Regional Pool in Peterborough for the World Championships this month and of course has Rio in her sights. So with a rigorous routine of up early, swim, rest, gym and swim again, mixed in with a bit of media work and venue openings it’s safe to say she doesn’t get much time to herself. Life’s pretty much swimsuits, no make-up and chlorine but we heard Harriet loved fashion, so ESP picked out some Ted Baker clothes from John Lewis, had her new blonde locks styled at Melanie Richard’s Hair Boutique, gave her a glamorous makeover by Lisa Hinks and fashion advice from ESP’s style guru Sue Donnelly. Coral dress (£119)
“I’m a bit of a designer freak,” admits Harriet. “I like all my names – Ted Baker, Diesel, All Saints, French Connection. I’m a bit of a clothes freak.
Jewellery – John Lewis
“I think when you’re sporty you’re never really seen as feminine or girlie so I quite like my girlie clothes and patterns, pinks and girlie dresses. I like colours just to make a change from sports gear and your typical ‘athlete likes to wear trousers look’ which people think you like to go out in – but we really don’t! We really do like to dress up and look nice!”
Clothes: All Ted Baker at John Lewis, Queensgate
Harriet loved her glamorous shoot at the Lido where she’s more familiar with doing some laps. She trains with the Peterborough Swimming Club which is boasting a lot of fresh new talent to keep Harriet on her toes. “It’s quite an up coming club now. Ben Negus the coach has really been working hard with us all and the club’s really making a mark on not only the regional and county scene but the national scene. “We’ve stepped up and have started to produce swimmers that are fighting for top positions in the country so it’s really taken a step forward in the last couple of years and I think they’ve got a really bright future.”
Cropped collarless neon pink jacket – £179 Glasses – New Heston range, Vision Express Clothes: All Ted Baker at John Lewis, Queensgate
As part of the ‘legacy’ that’s being pushed so hard to keep up the momentum gained from the Games, Harriet is still playing her part in encouraging youngsters into the sport. “I think it helps to see that actually the hard work can pay off and after all the training that we all do – I do it with them, we all do the same and train together – that you can get rewards.” It certainly requires plenty of dedication and Harriet says that had she not been so driven to succeed as a swimmer, fashion may have been her other calling. “If I hadn’t been a sporty person I might’ve gone into fashion somewhere along the line – a bit of designing and personal shopping. “The shoot was really fun and something a bit different. It’s been nice to be at the pool as it’s where I swim all the time so nice to have a bit of a fashion shoot with the pool as part of that. It’s been brilliant, a really nice day.” View more of our fashion shoot, find out about the fashion and make up trends from our ESP experts and read more from Harriet on www.espmag.co.uk. Our thanks to the Lido, Vivacity Culture and Leisure and also Sarah McGhie for their help with this shoot.

The sun shone once again and record crowds of over 80,000 turned out to enjoy three days of free music at The Willow Festival on the Embankment. ESP was supporting the event once again and the team were down there over the weekend with our Paparazzi photographers Mike Harris and Chris Brudenell capturing the action. Organiser Mark Ringer told ESP – “I’d like to say a big thanks to The Willow Festival organising team for stepping up to the plate and helping me stage the event this year. If it wasn't for their help, TWF 2013

definitely couldn't have happened. The work load this time around was staggering, so big thanks to James McCullen, Paul Archer, Jane Vellam, Ashley Harding and David Pleasance. “We also had a record number of volunteers on hand, so thanks to all of them too, it was hot and exhausting work, but they all stuck it out to the end. “Every stage area was sponsored in 2013 and we've already had offers of further sponsorship if we run the event again in 2014.” Annette Joyce, Head of Commercial Operations at Peterborough City
Council, also thanked the police, council officers and everyone involved adding – “The Embankment is made to host large scale events like this and by working in partnership with its organisers; The Willow Festival had a positive economic and wellbeing impact on the city. It was fantastic to see so many up-and-coming and established bands sharing their talent in front of a massive audience.” Roll on 2014 then and let’s hope there’s more to come on the Embankment!

ESP’s Sharon McAllister grabs a word with this month’s cover star… Eliza Dollittle’s feel good track Pack Up had us all singing along a few years ago and now she’s back with another catchy little number, Big When I Was Little and her second album on the way in the autumn. Three years after breaking through with her self-titled Platinum-certified debut album which featured the hit singles Skinny Genes and Pack Up, Miss Doolittle has been doing quite a bit actually! Eliza’s currently doing the rounds with Disclosure singing the vocals on Chart hit You & Me for which she wrote the lyrics, and has now produced her own stripped back version to create an emotive torch song topped by a soulful vocal performance. Eliza’s set to announce her own headline shows soon but in the meantime has made one of her first appearances performing her new single on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch, where of course she was also roped into a bit of cooking which she admits isn’t her big thing – “They had me scooping out a courgette, that was fun. I’m not the best cook so I think they gave me the easiest job! It’s just something I’ve never really had the passion for. I love good food and eating, I really am passionate about food but I just don’t like cooking,” she laughs.
But while many of us might have our feet up chilling out an watching the likes of Sunday Brunch Eliza told me she’s never really enjoyed a typical weekend – “Even in my own head I’ve never really given myself weekends or anything. I guess I give myself a day to switch off and it’s important to separate yourself off from what you do, but for me that probably happens on a Wednesday or a Friday it just depends.” Eliza wrote all of her new album so it’s easy to see that her head’s usually pretty full of tunes and lyrics. Three years ago Eliza was singing about light hearted, feel good stuff and while new single Big When I Was Little still has an upbeat feel she admits a few life experiences have matured her songwriting – “In the song writing I’ve changed a lot. I’ll always be a control freak that’s for sure, I get a bit anal about really small things, even the snare sounds of the drum on a song or something like that. This time round I’ve really tried to let go a bit and let it flow a little more which is something I definitely didn’t do before. “I’ve learnt a lot in this whole process – not just in actual songwriting ways but in life anyway. I’m at the age where people learn a lot about themselves and I would hope that I’ve grown a bit as a person let alone as a musician in the last few years. “I guess I’ll always be myself but I have different sides to me and I think the songs I released on my last album, it was three years ago and I hadn’t really experienced that much really at that point so what I was singing about was quite light and feel good and I think my new record delves a little bit more than I’ve ever delved before.”

After the successful collaboration with Disclosure, Eliza says she’s open minded about working with other artists in future – “I think it’s so cool when people from different places put their brains together that’s how you come up with something people haven’t heard before necessarily.” With an appearance at Liverpool International Festival this month and touring prior to the album release – “I do love travelling and seeing different places I’ve not seen before,” – Eliza is excited about getting back out there after spending a year and a half writing for the new album, for which she turned out at least a hundred songs she had to whittle down to her favourites. Life’s had its ups and downs for the young singer and some of these tracks have been cathartic for her. “There are songs from the album from when I was not in a good place at all,” Eliza reveals, “and I have to remember how I felt then to know how to get over it and remember how lucky I am not to feel that anymore. In a way Big When I Was Little, when you go through something for the first time in your life that you’ve never felt before, it makes you remember things about when you were younger, so in a way, although it’s the most funnest songs on the record, it still means a lot to me. Every song is a piece of the puzzle, and a piece of the journey for me.” So what was her favourite thing when she was little? “Probably making up dance routines and singing along to my favourite songs!” Well that’s certainly worked out for her! Eliza’s new single is out now and look out for her new album on Parlophone out in October. www.elizadoolittle.com

ELYSIUM 21 Cast: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley Matt Damon and Jodie Foster star in acclaimed Oscar-nominated District 9 director Neill Blomkamp’s first film since his 2009 breakout sci-fi.
All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.
And he sticks to the same genre, but in a universe set more than a hundred years in the future (2154 to be exact) as the very wealthy – under the ruthless guardianship of Foster’s Secretary Rhodes – live in a pristine manmade space station called Elysium, and the rest live on a decaying Earth.
But when Damon’s character Max gets a cancer virus after an industrial accident, he’s got five days to get to the infamous station to find a cure – and maybe even bring parity to the two polarised worlds. Sadly for Max it’s not going to be easy with Rhodes stopping at nothing to preserve the luxury lifestyle of her citizens – with Blomkamp’s District 9 lead star Sharlto Copley as the violent head of her enforcement.
THE HEAT
THE CONJURING
Released: July 31
Released: August 2
After Identity Thief and The Hangover: Part III, Bridesmaids’ breakout star Melissa McCarthy seems to be in every comedy going. And there’s already talk of a sequel after this was a massive hit Stateside, as McCarthy stars as a loose-cannon Boston cop who teams up with Sandra Bullock’s bythe-book FBI agent to track down a drug lord.
Talking of films that have been massive hits in the States, this critically-lauded horror from the director of Saw took in over $40m in its opening weekend last month. Patrick Wilson (Watchmen) and Vera Farmiga (TV series Bates Motel) star as paranormal investigators trying to help a family terrorised by a dark presence in their farmhouse.

Released: August 14
Released: August 16
Released: August 16
Jim Carrey has reportedly snubbed publicity for this film after deeming this sequel too violent (didn’t he watch the first film?). But I’m sure as new superhero Colonel Star and Stripes he’s still taken his full pay packet, after the bravery of Kick Ass (Aaron Johnson) and Hit-Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) inspire a new wave of self-made masked crusaders.

Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg star as two undercover agents who begrudgingly team-up after finding themselves on the run after a botched attempt to infiltrate a drug cartel. Bill Paxton (Aliens), James Marsden (X-Men) and Paula Patton (Ghost Protocol) co-star in this crime-caper from the director of Contraband.
PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS Released: August 7 This sequel to the mildly successful The Lightning Thief fantasy tries to fill some of the void left by the likes of Harry Potter – as the son of Poseidon (Logan Lerman) and pals journey to the Sea of Monsters to retrieve the Golden Fleece and save their Half-Blood homestead. Costars Sean Bean.
This was initially meant to be a direct-to-DVD release, but was turned into a cinematic Cars spinoff from those Disney cash-cows. It may not be a Pixar film, but it has their fingerprints all over it, and should turn a nice profit on a lesser budget – particularly with recognisable voices such as Val Kilmer, John Cleese and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
THE LONE RANGER
GROWN UPS 2
Released: August 9
Released: August 9
The first two entries in this month’s round-up mentioned movies that have become hits on just a fraction of the money Johnny Depp’s big summer flop cost to make. He stars as Tonto in Disney’s big-budget misfire, with little-known Armie Hammer as the legendary eyemasked lawmaker, in this westernadventure from The Pirates of the Caribbean team.
It was a toss-up between this and geriatric action flick RED 2 (out August 2) to which would get this coveted slot – and as this Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Chris Rock comedy sequel has been more successful at the US Box Office, it gains this dubious accolade. Hopefully the comedy will be better than in the woeful first film though.
MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES
JURASSIC PARK 3D
Released: August 21 With a number of teen films clambering to fill that void left by the Twilight series, this movie based on the best-selling books sees demons, warlocks, vampires and werewolves run riot in an alternative New York called Downworld. Lily Collins stars as a descendant Shadowhunter searching for her mother (Lena Headey).
Released: August 23 Steven Spielberg’s once recordbreaking hit movie gets the 3D treatment for its twentieth anniversary. You know the story, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Dickie Attenborough and co, get in strife after cloned dinosaurs – including Velociraptors and a T-Rex – run amok in a topsecret theme park during its test run. Still a class act.

BORDERLANDS 2: TINY TINA’S ASSAULT ON DRAGON’S KEEP
The ULTIMATE Combat Gaming Experience Airsoft is a military simulation game similar to paintball. It costs a lot less to play, it hurts less and uses realistic looking replica weapons.
(360/PS3/PC) Out now If this is the final piece of Borderlands 2 DLC – then at least the series is ending with a terrific bang. 2K haven’t gone cheap on fans of this sensational Pandora-based all action role-player, as this fourth slice of downloadable content – which can be purchased separately or as part of the Season Pass – provides a diverse new landscape for heroine Tiny Tina to weave her tale.
#####
With a whole host of new enemies and content, this twisted Dungeons and Dragons-esque adventure is arguably the best DLC of the series so far – and will keep your appetite truly whetted until the inevitable third instalment on next-gen consoles.
PAINKILLER: HELL & DAMNATION (PS3/360/PC) Out now This demonic shooter series was looking dated last time round – and as this generation’s consoles come to a close it brings very little inspiration to the table. It looks the best it ever has, and hosts a vast array of satisfying weaponry – from chainguns that wield rocket launchers to stake guns and saw blades – but its arsenal sadly runs out far too quickly.
#####
Hero Daniel Garner tries to escape the hell of Purgatory to be reunited with his wife – but lack of invention and uninspired enemies ultimately leaves the series in need of some heavenly intervention.

ALAN PARTRIDGE: ALPHA PAPA
This will go one of three ways. It’s either going to provide the non-stop comedic genius of his legendary three BBC TV series from the mid-nineties and earlynoughties; the intermittent humour of the soso watered-down recent Sky incarnation; or go the way of the disastrous Ali-G and Kevin and Perry films. It’ll probably end up somewhere in the middle as North Norfolk’s most famous TV/DJ celebrity provides a film which he’s calling his ‘love letter to Norwich’ – as Steve
Coogan’s insecure character still clambers for the limelight. This time the man who famously had a nervous breakdown after driving barefoot to Dundee, looks to salvage his public career after a violent turn of events at his local radio station. Fingers-crossed on this one, as the original Alan Partridge material provided some of the greatest tear-inducing comedy moments to come from these isles . . .

MIXOLOGY FEATURING BREACH (BEN WESTBEECH)!
KEEP CALM IT’S BROWNSUGA BrownSuga is back on Friday August 23 with DJs Eddie Nash, AJ and guests in the Red Room playing the finest sounds from the 90s to the present day mashing up some soul, swing, hip hop, RnB, ragga, D&B and garage!
‘Jack’ has been a phenomenal success since hitting club floors during early 2013 when originally released on Claude Von Stroke’s Dirtybird label. Its infectious jacking drum pattern; a simple yet absorbing bassline and a sleazy vocal hook has made it an essential record for DJs across the country and has been reverberating on the Red Room Sound System since April. With a full UK release on Atlantic, it looks certain to be a top 5 success. His repertoire of releases for labels such as 2020 Vision, Dirtybird, Pets and his own label Naked Naked have seen him collaborate with the likes of Midland on 101 and Dark Sky on two heavyweight tracks in Fallout and The Click. Naked Naked have also released tracks by the likes of Dusky Vanishing Point and Peterborough’s own Pasteman (aka Matt Bridgewater) with Brown Bread. With a recent BBC Radio1 Essential Mix under his belt too, BREACH is set to be an artist even more heavily in demand. We can’t wait to see what bombs he brings with him to Mixology!

(Free)time Travelling – where will you find yourself this summer? I’ve travelled through Peterborough in some unique ways. I’ve sailed across the River Nene in a Dragon Boat, soared over Hampton in a hot air balloon, and set off in Thomas the Tank Engine from Nene Valley Railway. I can now say that I’ve explored our city in the Tardis from Doctor Who. To celebrate 50 years of Doctor Who, its famous (and infamous!) characters are taking over the Peterborough Museum on August 3 and 4 (10am 5pm). These characters include K-9, Clockwork Robot, new Paradigm Dalek and Davros – the creator of the Daleks. To see these, and the life-sized Tardis, it’s only £3 for adults, concessions £2, families £6 and under 5s or Heritage Pass holders get in free. If Doctor Who is not for you, there’s plenty more happening at the Museum as part of their Space Fact and Fiction exhibition which continues until October – and most of it’s free. Check out www.vivacity-peterborough.com for full details on what’s happening and when. Whilst visiting the Museum, the staff were kind enough to allow me to travel around Peterborough in the Tardis. Speeding through time, I explored the city in a flash to pick out a few locations you can visit throughout the summer. For an a-mazeing family day out, why not check out Skylark’s jungle safari themed Maize Maze (PE15 0PE)? Get lost in one of the UK’s biggest mazes, whilst playing the Jungle Bungle game, seeking out the monkey nuts (to win a prize) and trying to avoid some cheeky monkeys roaming around. I’ve taken my niece to this particular maze many times. She enjoyed herself almost as much as I did, so it’s definitely something for all ages. New for 2013 are the Pesky Pigeons. Those naughty pigeons are eating the farm’s corn, so it’s up to you to climb on board a tractor (loaded with a water pistol) and squirt those giant birds. But be warned – the pigeons sometimes squirt back! To find out more, visit www.skylarkmaizemaze.co.uk A popular place for families to visit is Sacrewell Farm & Country Centre. With loads of extra activities

planned from now through until September 3, I’m sure this summer it’ll be as popular as ever. This year’s activities include duck racing, pony grooming, pond dipping and The Lamb National! During my Tardis journey, I of course, had to check out these cute animals close up, whilst enjoying some cream tea in The Mill House. Popular favourites also include tractor rides, Pooh Sticks, feeding the animals and exploring the mill and Timeline Barn see www.sacrewell.org.uk for full prices and opening times. A couple of years ago, I interviewed the Time Team presenter, Tony Robinson for ESP Magazine. He spoke passionately about his frequent visits to Flag Fen. He told me – “I love the place. It’s an amazing archaeological site. With the Museum and Flag Fen, I’m convinced Peterborough is well on its way to becoming one of the most provincial centres for history and archaeology in the country.” Whilst looking around Flag Fen myself, I could see why the Blackadder star spoke so lovingly about it. Find out for yourself by visiting Flag Fen daily from 10am–5pm (last entry at 4pm) from now, till September 30. There are plenty of great films screening at the Showcase Cinema this summer and as we’re promised some extremely hot days, why not do some swimming and sunbathing at the Lido? Then there’s bowling, iceskating, go-karting, train rides at Nene Valley Railway and more – there really is so much to do in Peterborough. For up-to-date information on everything happening in the city, keep checking out www.espmag.co.uk – it’s packed with news and things to do. Unfortunately, I now need to return the Tardis… but I hope to see you out and about soon! Mikey ‘just call me The Doctor’ Clarke

HEALTH & VITALITY with Karen Devine
Can you feel the force? ESP’s Karen Devine explores how to tune into your inner energy force...
B
efore you read this column fully I’d like you to put your hands together (almost) as an experiment. When you put your hands out in front of you as if you are about to clap them together, pull them closer together until they are about 3–4 inches away from each other, then stop, from there pull
them back slightly and then draw them together again. You can do this with your eyes opened or closed, can you feel it? You will feel a very subtle tingling or other sensation but you will feel something if you put your attention on to it.
karen.devine@espmag.co.uk
That’s your energy field, electromagnetic field, prada or chi energy field. Whatever it’s called in various traditions it refers to the same thing and it’s this energy field I want to talk about here.
It’s now known that we’re more than just flesh and bones, as Einstein said, everything in the universe is energy. For centuries the early philosophers and healers spoke of this energy and what is exciting is that we may have the ability to use this vibrating energy for healing! This energy field is interacting with the larger energy field (the universe) and we communicate to this field by way of our feelings and thoughts which hold their own frequency which allows these waves to ‘move’.
What we put into our body and what thoughts, beliefs and perceptions we hold of ourselves and the world around us, registers in this field as everything holds a frequency, including our thoughts, beliefs, emotions and perceptions. Our energy field is a moving, vibratory field that can be influenced by all of this and importantly our feelings. Food for instance is another great example, anything live and vibrant such as raw foods offer a higher frequency as they’re packed full of live enzymes (when we cook foods we destroy the enzymes and the life force) so eating some raw foods during
www.espmag.co.uk
Other ways to lift our vibrational energy include being in nature, out in the sunshine, being around trees,
“It’s now known that we’re more than just flesh and bones...”
As we’re becoming more aware of this subtle energy field we’re also finding that a block in its flow may mean we experience symptoms in our physical body. Acupuncture is one of many disciplines that use needles at meridian points to release this blocked energy/chi etc.

the day helps raise our own vibration, whereas dead, cooked food offers no life force energy.
mountains, swimming in the sea, having freshly picked flowers or plants around you, listening to uplifting music or reading/watching inspirational books, documentaries and films. Turn this the other way with dead, non nutritious, heavily processed foods, watching disturbing films, holding negative thoughts etc, and these all lower our vibration and can cause us to feel low in mood and energy in our physical body. Our energy field can also be lifted or lowered by the company we keep continuously or if we are unhappy in our lives with our jobs and relationships as well as chemicals we take into our body. This affects our energy field, and can then manifest as symptoms in our physical body for which we may take a pill to suppress. We are becoming more aware of the mind, body, energy connection which our early naturopaths, doctors and healers understood centuries ago and knew that we are more than a physical body reduced to its individual part. By embracing the whole, the mind, body and spirit and working with and understanding this subtle energy field we will see a whole new field of healing emerge in the future. Namaste, Karen Karen is now running workshops that will describe this field further and can share with you ways to work with this energy field which helps attract your wishes, dreams and desires. Please email her on karen.devine@ espmag.co.uk for more details. www.karendevine.co.uk

Top Travel TreaTs If (for some bizarre reason) I could only take five beauty items on holiday with me this year, they would have to be...
burn baby burn... With temperatures finally hotting up here and many of you hitting the beach in more exotic locations it’s likely that the dreaded sunburn will feature highly in your lives this season. The sun really does take its toll on your skin so make sure you treat it to some much deserved TLC (tanning loving care!) Here are a few of the best after sun lotions to help soothe the burn... Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration After Sun, £12.99 is a gel lotion combination that isn’t greasy in the slightest and absorbs quickly into the skin. The silk protein and shea butter provides 24 hour moisturisation but the best thing about this after sun has to be the scent; after using it you smell like a walking, talking pina colada. Heaven! Garnier Ambre Solaire After Sun Soothing Hydration lotion, £3.49 contains aloe vera to really help soothe the skin and take away any redness. It feels cooling on the skin reducing that tightness that the sun can sometimes cause. It’s quite light so soaks into the skin easily and also doubles up as a fab every day body moisturiser. St Tropez Aftersun lotion, £12.75 with a hint of self tan not only calms your sunburn but will help to prolong your tan too, bonus! This thick lotion envelops your skin in a rich cream and is packed full of nourishing ingredients such as raspberry seed oil and vitamin E, leaving your skin feeling super soft. Banana Boat Aloe Vera Gel, £9.99 is exactly that – a gel, rather than a lotion. With pure aloe vera leaf juice its fragrance is refreshing and is so soothing after a hot day in the sun. I found that it also works even better if you keep it in the fridge for that extra cool experience. Wherever you go on your travels this summer just make sure you keep your after sun close by when you seek out the sun!

Sure Clear Aqua mini deodorant, £1.19. Not only is this small enough to pop in your hand luggage but this really will make sure you stay as fresh as a daisy on your travels. Even when it’s hot out there, you can stay cool and breezy all day long.
2
Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Nourishing Lip Balm SPF 20. I’ve been smothering my lips in their famous eight hour cream for years and now this classic has brought out the real deal. At £18 it’s worth every penny and is 100% devoted to perfecting parched lips. Mwa!
3
NEW Vaseline Spray & Go Moisturizer. I was already a huge fan of their gel body oils but these are on a whole new moisturising level. These spray lotions are so quick and convenient, giving all over, even coverage. My personal fave is Aloe Fresh, ideal for rehydrating skin after a day in the sun. You can’t go on holiday without a ‘wow’ nail polish and in my opinion the brighter, the better. China Glaze Nail Lacquer in Yellow Polka Dot Bikini is an in your face yellow shade not for the faint hearted that looks amazing against a tan.

It’s one of the hidden secrets of the Fens but it’s time this dog had its day! Friendly bar staff

Dog in a Doublet chutneys – even their own crisps – available at the ‘Dog Gone Deli’ in the pub.
‘Noodle’ takes a rest John and Della are celebrating their second anniversary of running the Dog in a Doublet which they’ve transformed into a country pub worth the short drive out of the city centre to enjoy.
Great views of the River Nene
John’s a guy who’s passionate about food in every sense and has cooked and studied it all his life, even participating in Master Chef back in 2007 where he got through to the second round. He and wife Della had their eye on the Dog in a Doublet for a long time before taking it over two years ago and see great potential in this country pub nestled by the river. They’ve already worked wonders on it creating a homely, shabby chic look, their barmen sport caps and waistcoats, dogs are welcome in the bar and they promise there’ll be more improvements to come.
Chef John has created great pub grub with a fine food twist so you’ll find sausage and mash on the menu but not as you know it! It’ll be made of three types of sausage all cooked differently for a range of flavours and textures, potatoes mashed in their skins and beautifully presented with home made red onion marmalade.
With a petting zoo on site and a bouncy castle it’s ideal for families to make a day of it and equally good for a meal for two. Throughout the week they’ve come up with great ideas to attract diners including Winner Wednesdays when you can flip a coin and win the chance to dine for free (you must book in advance) and on Thursdays it’s buy-one-get-one-free on their delicious homemade burgers and pizzas.
‘Locally sourced’ doesn’t come much closer than this with not just local suppliers or allotment societies used where possible, but plenty of produce actually home grown by the owners. They grow their own fruits, rear their own pigs, use eggs from their own chickens and make a range of cakes, snacks, sauces and
Weekday lunches are £7.99 for two courses and £9.99 for three courses or you can pop in for a snack or a filled roll, cake and coffee for £4.99. There is always a range of specials, a Sunday carvery and even home made ice cream so perhaps it’s time to discover this little secret for yourself.

FAT TURK WELL WORTH A TRY Some of the ESP team recently headed out for a meal at the Fat Turk on St Paul’s Street (near the Tobie Norris pub) in Stamford and thoroughly recommend it. The weather was fine which meant it was a great opportunity to enjoy outside dining among the fairy lights in
the garden. It was good to see we weren’t forgotten outside and the service was good. The menu had plenty to choose from but we tried the ‘Ottoman Feast’ which certainly lived up to its name and is not for those with a small appetite as it was delicious and generous. There was a great atmosphere on the night, helped along by it being the chef’s birthday and a party atmosphere broke out at the end of the night with some guests invited to join in with a little belly dancing! Whether this is a regular thing we couldn’t say, but we guess their friendly approach is something you’ll find on every visit and
we intend to put it to the test again in future. Give it a try for yourself on 01780 238001.

CALLING KIBWORTH
BRASS STAMFORD GEORGIAN FESTIVAL Stamford's first ever Georgian Festival was officially launched last month and the town’s now gearing up for what’s going to be a weekend to remember! The festival's full programme of events and activities was unveiled by members of South Kesteven District Council along with none other than his Royal Highness King George III! The ‘king’ who was dressed in full regal attire announced that Stamford would be transported back to the elegance of the Georgian era and that celebrations would be fit for royalty! The festival begins on the evening of Friday September 27 with a series of talks from some of the UK's finest voices on the Georgian Era including the BBC's Dan Cruickshank and food historian Annie Gray. From then on the weekend is a plethora of history and entertainment combined into one! On Saturday September 28 the town will come alive with street entertainers, a street fayre and craft market, horse drawn carriage rides, a treasure hunt, tours and more. Horrible Histories will perform a specially written show ‘Gorgeous Georgians’ which is expected to be a sell out, and the entertainment continues into Sunday September 29 when the line-up includes a Georgian Tea Dance and a cricket re-enactment on The Meadows. This is not just a weekend of fun for the public however. Local businesses from across Stamford will be joining in the celebrations. Corrine Garbett from SKDC told ESP how the festival plans to give a boost to the local economy. “Local businesses can really get involved in the festival by promoting themselves through a Georgian theme. For example we have a number of dress shops that will be displaying Georgian fashion and we have food shops that will be pushing products popular in the Georgian era. “We also have a treasure hunt so stores with no direct Georgian link can hide an object in their store and still benefit from some festival exposure.” Tickets for special events happening throughout the festival are available to book now from the Stamford Arts Centre! To book call 01780 763203 or visit www.stamfordartscentre.com or find out more on www.stamfordgeorgianfestival.co.uk Alex Jones

STEAMPUNK CONVIVIAL Ever seen the film Mad Max? If you have and thought to yourself 'I like what those guys are wearing' then you are admiring the fashion movement known as 'Steampunk'. Described as showcasing a 'Vision of a Victorian Science Fiction World' the movement is spreading like wild fire and Stamford will be throwing its first Steampunk Convivial in the United Reformed Church Hall on Friday August 9 and Saturday August 10. Steampunk is all about a cultural/music/fashion movement based on Victorian Science fiction – think Jules Verne. A world filled with top hats, goggles, ladies in corsets, steam driven and mechanical devices, copper, brass and leather, tea and being splendid! Run For Fun – It’s Just As Great Anyone who’s previously taken part in the Perkins Great Eastern Run will tell you that it’s not easy doing a halfmarathon. It takes a lot of commitment, training, and (unfortunately for me) limiting your junk-food intake.
If the thought of running 13 gruelling miles isn’t for you, then why not consider doing the Fun Run?
take part is that people tend to have a little more… well, ‘fun’ with the Fun Run.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that 5k is a walk in the park, and won’t involve any training. I’m simply saying you won’t need to train AS MUCH as you would for the full run. Another great reason to
It’s become quite common for people to dress up in costumes when taking part in shorter runs. Below is a list of the three most popular costumes, which will hopefully inspire you to wear one yourself…
FREE TRAINING HELP
1. Superhero
2. Women
3. The Morph suit
At one point or another, we’ve all wanted to be a Superhero. Wearing a cape in the office, or whilst dropping the kids off at school may result in a few odd stares. However, at a Fun Run it’s more than acceptable and even encouraged!
You can guarantee to see a few men dressed up as women during a Fun Run. This is perhaps popular as the man wants to be seen as not taking himself too seriously. Maybe he lost a bet. Or perhaps it’s the thought of a breeze up his skirt whilst running that’s most appealing? You tend to get quite hot during these runs after all.
Morph suits are full body suits made from polyester and spandex to make them extra stretchy. They’re basically full body jumpsuits that are shaped like a human body complete with fingers.
I once ran the Fun Run as Wonder Woman so I don’t want to hear your excuses. I hope to see you at the event, dressed to impress, and ready to fly through that finishing line. Visit www.perkinsgreateastern run.co.uk/fun-run for more information on the Fun Run.
Many say they are able to have more fun in a Morph suit as they become totally anonymous and lose all / most of their inhibitions (like me after a few cocktails in Flares). Mikey Clarke
Don’t forget race organisers have once again laid on free training sessions on Wednesdays (fortnightly) for runners of all abilities. There’s free parking at the Regional Fitness and Swimming Centre car park and the athletics track has full changing and shower facilities. The training sessions take place on the following Wednesdays at 7pm: • August 7 and 21 • September 4 and 18 • October 2

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…
Keith says...
What a good month July was. I managed to see Citizen Smith and Hooker at The Ploughman Beer Festival. The Gangsters, Motor City Vipers and T Rex at The Willow Festival. Every one of the performances was great.
Mark Randall
One thing did confuse me about this year’s Willow Festival. The organisers announced that they wouldn’t allow any alcohol to be brought on site in order to stop over consumption. In light of this I would love to hear their comment on the fact that the bars wouldn’t sell half pints but insisted on you buying a pint… surely encouraging potential over consumption! Nevertheless thanks to the excellent weather and full marks to the organisers who work so hard to bring these events to us, we are very lucky to get so much quality music in Peterborough.
The Malingerers
Oh, and I saw the Rolling Stones in Hyde Park along with 80,000 others… What a band!

KING KOOL RELEASE NEW SINGLE On August 25 local guys King Kool will have just come off stage after opening up for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at the start of their UK dates. It’s a great gig for the band but there’s more to come this August as their new single Rocket Roll comes out the following day on the Oilbug label and will be a forerunner track taken from KK’s fourth album Scuzz Bombe to be released in November. With the spirit of the Stooges and a dose of fuelled up 60’s rock’n’roll, Rocket Roll is described as ‘an uncompromised banshee beat with a jet engine heads down chorus’. This is garage punk at its finest so head to iTunes and download it on August 26! PETERBOROUGH FOLK ROOTZ IS HERE
Lovers of local music will be familiar with Randall Rootz events around the area, the most recent being the MCV at Brewery Tap. Now, it’s great to see the ever busy organisers of the Randall Rootz team are back with a festival for the first time in three years. This time they’ve merged with the Peterborough Folk Festival to bring us the historic Peterborough Folk Rootz Festival. The original Peterborough Folk Rootz Festival was established in 1999 by Peterborough musician, Mark Randall, who brought a plethora of folk and world music artists to a culturally developing Peterborough. After Mark's untimely passing in 2007, the Randall Rootz Festival was launched by his close friends and family – originally as a one-off memorial event – to raise funds and support for Sue Ryder Care at Thorpe Hall Hospice and to keep the spirit of Mark's love for music alive by continuing to bring a range of diverse music to the city. The last Randall Rootz Festival was in 2010. This year’s festival takes place outside in the Charters garden on the Town Bridge over the weekend of August 17/18 and a jam-packed line-up of bands has been announced, with 20+ acts scheduled to perform over the weekend and musicians hailing from as far afield as the West Indies, France and Ukraine.
These ethnic artists join an impressive list of local performers who include: Opaque ,The Deltaphonics, Lexie Green, The Malingerers, The Claddagh Band, Pennyless, Laurette Evelyn & Chris Watson, Shake Hands Eric, The Dead Rabbits, The Lesley Curtis Band and Quest. This means the festival will bring not just folk but additionally blues, rock, old time country, Celtic fusion and some traditional Irish music. As well as the diverse range of live acts, the festival will also include performance poetry and a variety of family entertainment, including face-painting for children. All of this accompanied by the usual Charters hospitality by the side of the River Nene means that the weekend of August 17/18 is going to be a great one. INTERVIEW
LAVANDULA BRINGS US MORE LIKE TREES
Lavandula is a recent addition to the live music choices available within Peterborough. It’s hosted each month by a group of friends aiming to provide another option for going out in Peterborough. Rich Hill, one of the Lavandula troupe told ESP – “We have two key goals – to create a friendly and interesting environment where we can showcase some of the city’s best musical talent alongside performers from the festival circuit. The other is to raise funds for The Brain Tumour Charity.” Of course, we are presently right in the festival season so Lavandula have very cleverly secured a visit from More Like Trees to the Brewery Tap on August 2. The band are fitting their appearance in between performances at The Secret Garden Party and Boomtown festivals. They are a three-piece, drawing on a range of musical influences to create 'Strum & Bass' acoustic music and incorporating elements of classical, hip hop, rock, dance, flamenco and folk. Support on the night comes from Peterborough’s very own Charlie Alexander with an acoustic performance. The Tap Room at The Brewery Tap will provide a good intimate atmosphere and there will be more Lavandula nights to come each month so for dates and more information go to facebook.com/lavandulaevents

WE ARE FICTION
They could be called the crowning glory of the Peterborough music scene and with the arrival of new single The Worst Of It, along with new album, One For Sorrow set for release in September, ESP’s Alex Jones thinks We Are Fiction could be set to become the UK’s next rock super power… ‘There is no substitute for hard work ’Thomas Edison. Wise words from a wise man and listened to by wise people. So using this logic we can ascertain that the lads from We Are Fiction (WAF) are indeed wise. The five piece alternative outfit has been tirelessly touring the country since their conception in 2010, so when we caught up with guitarist Andi Scott Shaw it was of no surprise to us to discover that the band were already starting work on a new project. Andi told me – “We’re currently planning our new video for the next single, so we need to get in touch with the label and see what budget we have for it etc.”
HAWKWIND FLY IN
Following last year’s successful appearance at the Stamford Corn Exchange, Hawkwind revisit the venue on Sunday August 25. The legendary space rockers have been on the road for over 40 years, and this time, are promising to give a full performance in sequential entirety of the classic Hawkwind album Warrior on The Edge of Time. With the lord of space rock Dave Brock at the helm, ex-Gong synthesiser player Tim Blake on keyboards, Mr Dibs on bass, long serving drummer Richard Chadwick and Niall Hone on guitar, Hawkwind bring us their unmissable and spectacular stage show featuring dancers, psychedelic lighting and projections. They play Stamford as part of The Warrior on The Edge tour and just prior to going to Canada and America where they spend October playing all US major cities. Their live shows are described as a psychedelic dream and this gig is going to be spectacular. Tickets from 01780 766455 or www.stamford-corn-exchange.co.uk
There really is no down time. Highlighted by BBC Radio 1 as one of the upcoming acts of 2013, the last six months have been intense. But with a passionate fan base to please and ever growing venues to fill, things are only just getting started. In fact, if the success of fellow rockers Mallory Knox and Don Broco are anything to go by, things could go supernova for the quintet. So how does it feel to know that the band’s contemporaries are not only being acknowledged, but embraced by so many major media outlets? “It's massively inspiring to see those bands doing so well,” says Andi. “It makes us want to push our dream harder, knowing that we can grab the attention of the mainstream without compromising what we do.”
Available to watch on Youtube, the video provides a taster of what WAF are like in a live environment, which is where they truly come into their own. In fact it's this reputation of being such a great live act that made them the first band in 14 years to sell out Peterborough’s Met Lounge with presales alone! “That show was intense,” says Andi. “We always get a good reaction at our gigs especially in Peterborough and it was our first sell out pre-sale as well so yeah, it was a great moment. The music scene here is really growing with great bands like All in Colours and A Story to Tell ones to watch.” As if the music and the live performances weren't enough to get this band noticed, Andi told me they've had a little help from a friend of theirs who’s been spreading the word to a whole new audience. “Aston (JLS) has been a friend of ours for years! He's the cousin of our bassist Ryan and he's been into our music from the beginning. When he mentions us on Twitter or something it’s amazing the amount of kids who are into pop give us a listen and really enjoy it.” So with the JLS star finding himself with a bit more free time soon, have WAF bagged themselves a new vocalist? Andi – “Ha ha! No nothing’s been discussed yet but who knows! A collaboration in the future could be interesting…”
This seems to be the general ethos of the band. In terms of their sound, compromise is not an option, when planning the video for current single The Worst Of It, Andi told me the brief was clear.
A collaboration would truly throw the rule book out the window. But then again who cares what the rule book says. 'Hell, there are no rules here – we're trying to accomplish something' – Thomas Edison.
“We wanted a simple video because the message is so strong. If we had maybe a narrative running through it I don't think it would’ve had the same impact. So we let the music do the talking and just had a laugh in front of a camera.”
We Are Fiction's single The Worst Of It is available to buy now on iTunes and their next single Bright Lights will be available in a couple of weeks. Alex Jones
