We’ve reported on the fabulous new Lakeside watersports centre and café at Ferry Meadows in previous issues but now they’ve been officially opened by a royal guest. Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal met with staff and service users of the Vivacity Adapted Cycling scheme before watching a Peterborough Sailability session and officially naming their new Lugger boat Blue Bird in her capacity as Patron of RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Foundation.

The visit culminated in a formal opening of Lakeside with the unveiling of a commemorative stone and plaque at its entrance. The Royal visit followed a £2.5 million investment from Nene Park Trust and a year of extensive works to the old watersports centre building and surrounding landscape. Lakeside provides a hub for activity and relaxation within Ferry Meadows as the home for Nene Outdoors, a new watersports and outdoor activity venture, Rutland Cycling for cycle hire and Lakeside Kitchen & Bar, a contemporary dining and function venue at the Park.

PUMP UP THE VOLUME

According to an article I read in Men’s Health magazine, 58% of women wish that men would be louder in the bedroom. A tin of baked beans for tea should do it then.

opened everything about The Bar oozed class, success and sophistication. If it had opened in the mid-1980s it would’ve been a hangout for yuppies.

BACK IN THE DAY...

The Bar’s clientele were all about being aspiring managers in the corporate world. They’d slave 9 ‘til 5 at Pearl Assurance or Thomas Cook and work out at Living Well in the evenings. It’s where trendy people went on a weekend night for a glass of wine or cocktail and where they’d entertain their clients over a Caesar salad at lunchtimes. At the time very few places gave off a special vibe and atmosphere like The Bar did and even as I write it’s hard to actually explain and put into words. There was a feeling of being part of a weekend family, people you only saw or spoke to on a Friday and Saturday night. This was before everyone had a mobile phone and long before Facebook, so catching up in nice surroundings was a special moment.

...THE BAR Before The Bar there was nothing. That’s not to say there weren’t any decent venues to enjoy in the city’s night scene, it’s just that The Bar had it all. It was the only place for townies to be seen in. I remember when I first saw The Bar. As with most new bar and club unveilings I got a sneak preview before its opening night. The first thing that entered my mind was that we’d finally got a slice of London in Peterborough. Before The Bar no other bar in town knew what the meaning of contemporary was. No other bar had leather sofas and no other bar had embraced the millennium by adopting a crispier more modern approach to its décor. It was like nothing else in town and it paved the way for plushness in some of our venues today. It was smart, upmarket, spacious and was housed mainly by large windows that helped make the most of its tint of orange mood lighting. When it

The Bar revellers respected their venue. I don’t think I ever saw a fight during all my weekends spent drinking Amaretto and Coke in there. It was also a place for conversation. I can’t really remember how good the music was, I just know the right tunes were being played out. And that’s because it was only ever background music for me when all that mattered was what the person you were talking to had to say. Nowadays the art of conversation is dying and when you enter a bar everyone’s staring into a lit up screen from the palm of their hand. People respected the venue and I for one was proud of it. I’ve always believed if you create something that represents quality and class, people will respect it and that was the case with The Bar in its early days. What helped it stay consistently on top of its game was decent management by Andy Scigala and his team who took pride in their work. The Bar was special and I feel lucky to have been a part of it back in the day…

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CLARKES! I can’t believe it’s been three years since the fine dining experience that is Clarkes flung its doors open in our city. I’m a big fan of their delicious menu and inviting surroundings, so I didn’t have to think twice about accepting an invitation to their third birthday bash. We were talking Pimms cocktails, champagne, mouth-watering canapés and out of this world birthday cake – it would have been rude not to partake. Even though the economic climate is slowly beginning to turn a corner our independents still face a daily battle to keep their heads above water. Clarkes has survived because it’s managed properly and the food is fantastic. Most of all it’s still serving excellence because the people of Peterborough are supporting it. Here’s to another three years and beyond.

FBI AT THE FLEET So, hopefully this isn’t just a flash in the pan but it seems that Italy’s poor showing in the World Cup has inspired some of the city’s young FBI’s (full blooded Italians) to unite in a way that hasn’t been seen since my childhood and gather together at The Fleet on a regular basis. It’s pleasing to see what in truth is slowly becoming a diluted generation of Italians doing something about celebrating and being proud of our identity and roots in a bid to ensure our culture and traditions continue for another generation at least, if not for longer. In times of adversity (the current state of Italy’s football) people come together and through the power of Facebook a group that was formed several years ago but remained dormant until now is trying to keep the Italian flame burning. These youngsters have finally come to appreciate The Fleet is theirs to make the most of – but the relationship has to be two-way. The Fleet has agreed to install Sky Italia, so we can actually watch in Italian the appalling state of Serie A and our national team and try to understand why (because everything in Italy is dissected and debated) Ferrari can’t give the two best (Alonso and Raikkonen) F1 drivers a competitive car.

STOPPED BY ANGLIA POLICE We’re well and truly into the classic car show season and there’s some cracking events well worth a visit during the next couple of months if you’re a classic and vintage car pornographer like me. One of the best shows in the area that I always look forward to is the Bourne Classic Car & Bike Show, which took place last month. This is always a well organised event with an excellent variety of classics and modern classics on show. I could’ve gone home with at least a dozen vehicles that caught my eye but perhaps the most charming was this Ford Anglia police car. Hopefully it’ll turn up again for others to see at the shows I’ve mentioned in Wheels on page 34.

COUNTRY OUTING WITH BALDERSTON RIDE-OUT

We can also watch the legend that is Valentino Rossi contest second place in the Moto GP championship unless of course the brilliant Marc Marquez injures himself for the rest of the season. We can even get together and support Italy in next year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

I told you last month that there are plenty of ride-outs coming up for bike fans this summer and that Balderstons are leading the way – sure enough TJ’s been in touch and hasn’t disappointed.

The first Fleet gathering of around 50 or more young (with the exception of Davide Broccoli) Italians took place for the World Cup final where there was plenty of pizza on the go and of course Peroni flowing at non-extortionate prices behind the bar.

On Wednesday August 6 they’ve picked a great country pub to visit – the Old White Hart at Lyddington near Oakham. It’s a great opportunity to test your wheels out on the country lanes, have a chat with other bikers and enjoy some great pub grub! All are welcome on these events, including scooters. So just be at Balderstons showroom in Hampton before they set off at 6pm.

Hopefully this new found resurgence of remembering where The Fleet is continues and is backed up with paying the pittance cost of annual membership fees, which will help to ensure the building that’s as old as I am outlives me and continues to serve as a cornerstone for our community.

If you need any more details give them a call on 01733 565470.

MY SEPTEMBER FEST You’ve got a few weeks yet, so no excuses for not being at a couple of what I know will be great events in September if you’re a boxing fan and if you’re Italian or IBM (Italian by marriage). First, on Thursday September 11, one of the best middleweight boxers of all time will be gracing us with his presence at The Solstice.

Roberto ‘hands of stone’ Duran will be the special guest at a boxing dinner where you’ll be able to hear about a career that spanned five decades during which time the Panamanian won four titles at four different weights. It was a time when the middleweight division was blessed with world class fighters such as

Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns – Duran fought them all. For tickets call Kevin Sanders on: 07872 601467. A week later – Thursday September 18 – is the date when excellent Australian / Italian comedian Joe Avati makes his long awaited return to the city. After a four year break from touring the UK Joe’s back with new material and an evening performance at The Fleet.

FITTING WINNERS AT FIRST ANDO TODISCO SHIELD My good friend Ando Todisco passed away suddenly last May and as a tribute to the man we all miss so much, his wife Estella and close friend Rai Devita organised the Ando Todisco Shield with help from Langtoft Football Club – one of the teams he used to play for. The day was a brilliant success and almost £2,500 was raised for the British Heart Foundation and Langtoft Football Club by the footballers who took part in the tournament and by the family and friends of Ando who turned out in memory and celebration of him. So many people and businesses donated prizes for children’s games and raffles. There was something for everyone at the event and it was great to see some faces and characters I remember from back in the day when Ando and the rest of us boys were hitting the town at weekends and playing football (not me, I was rubbish) the next morning. The tournament was organised by Rai who played with Ando throughout their footballing days and every team taking part represented one that Ando played for. In a fitting end to a perfect day, the team Ando was playing for when he died – Diligenta (pictured) – were crowned winners of what I hope becomes an annual family fun day and tournament. Well done to Estella, Rai, Barry and everyone who supported the event and took part.

Joe’s made a successful career telling stories of his own experiences of being the son of Italian immigrants in Australia. His funny stories of traditions and certain situations brought on by our Italian culture make for an evening of side-splitting entertainment. Call The Fleet for tickets on: 01733 560218.

Italian Festival in Cathedral Square (September 20 and 21). This established event is always a great crowd puller and expect to see a taste of La Dolce Vita including food (lots of it no doubt), singing, dancing and plenty of other entertainment over the weekend including a pop-up restaurant and hopefully a special guest…

And just two days after Joe’s show is the weekend of the city’s annual

KIDS CAN JOIN THE RUGBY MINIS After England's dismal showing in football's World Cup, interest in rugby is on the rise, as we host the sport's World Cup in this country next year. The sport's already hugely popular and Peterborough Rugby Club's reporting a big rise in youngsters wanting to take up the sport. The mini and junior section starts its new season with a training session at the club in Fengate – ‘the home of rugby in Peterborough’ – on September 7 (10am). Any potential new recruits are more than welcome. "Rugby's all about the five core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship, which we believe makes it unique," said Mini & Junior chairman Matt Throne.

"We have magnificent facilities and a newly refurbished club house and we can't wait to start the new season." The club has 11 separate junior squads from under-6 to under-16 inclusive and welcomes both boys and girls. All of the coaches are qualified, or working towards qualifications and are CRB checked to enable them to work with children. There is always a qualified first aider on site as well. The club also has senior men's and ladies' teams and a thriving veterans' section as well. Get training for the Perkins Great Eastern Run

Mikey with Dave Farrell

ESP’s Mikey Clarke is pounding the pavement in this year’s half marathon so he caught up with some other runners to see how their training is going and who they’re running for…

I

t’s getting to that stage; us Perkins Great Eastern Runners are trying desperately to cut out the takeaways, get our sponsorship forms filled in, and praying for good running conditions! Yes, Dinomite (the race mascot) and I are still training for the run. For a change of scenery and some motivation, we thought we’d head to the Peterborough Embankment Athletics Track to meet other runners. The council have started FREE training evenings and I attended the first one to see what they’re like. It turns out… they’re a lot of fun. Runners of all abilities are welcome to attend the free training sessions that take place at the track. Each session begins at 7pm with a warm up. Runners are divided according to level of fitness and aspirations before being taken for a training run. It was great to meet other local people also going through the same issues as me. I spoke to as many people as I could to see how they were getting on with their training, and what charity they planned to run for. One person I was surprised to see was POSH legend (and former ESP columnist) David Farrell, who told me – “My training is going well but I was bored of running on my own, so this is a great initiative to come and be a part of. I’m now training every day, sticking to a plan and I’m starting to enjoy it. Since I finished playing football, I needed something to replace it, and this is it. I’m also eating very healthily again which can only be a good thing.” Anna from Werrington said – “I came down tonight to get some tips from the professionals. I keep ‘hitting the wall’ at around 5 miles and need some help to get out of this

18

www.espmag.co.uk

rut. Hopefully I can get some advice and push on.” And Justin from Paston explained – “I ran the Great Eastern last year in just under 2 hours. I thought I’d trained quite well, but want to get less than 1hour 45 this year. That’s my goal anyway! I’ll be training with others who want to finish around the same time. Let’s hope I can keep up with them.” As we know, many people choose to run and raise money for charity. The official half marathon charity is BBC Children in Need but you can run for whichever charity you like. I spoke to Carole Hughes, who’s Anna’s mum from the Charity Anna’s Hope, the event’s official Fun Run charity. Carole said – “We would love as many people to run for us this year as possible. All the money you raise will go towards helping children in this region who have a brain tumour. We are trying to raise awareness, so if we can get as many people as possible running for us, we will be absolutely delighted.” If you’re interested email: admin@annashope.co.uk You may know that as well as writing for ESP Magazine, I am the Regional Fundraising Manager for Arthritis Research UK. I was delighted to speak to a couple of runners doing the Perkins Great Eastern Run for my charity. Arthritis affects over 10 million people in the UK, including 15,000 children. Arthritis Research UK are raising money towards life changing research which is happening right here in the East of England. I’ll be running proudly in my orange Arthritis Research UK t-shirt and have plenty spare for anyone else wanting to run for the great cause too. Who’s with me? If you’re interested email me at m.clarke@arthritisresearchuk.org #TeamOrange.

Rachael Clarke works for Peterborough Cathedral and told me at the training session – “This year a number of Cathedral staff and young choristers will be running to raise money towards the Choir Music Fund. The Cathedral has over 40 young singers between 7-13 years old, who keep the ancient choral music tradition alive, in a building at the very heart of our City. Funding to expand and continue the choristers’ musical education is vital, and we hope others might like to join us in the fun run in October.” You can email Rachael at Campaign@peterborough-cathedral.org.uk. There were people running for many other good causes too, such as RNIB and Sue Ryder. I highly recommend you consider running for a good cause if you haven’t already. From past experience, I know that there’s no greater motivation than knowing you’re pushing yourself to help others. It really gives you that extra incentive. If you missed the first training session, fear not – there are plenty more taking place. I hope to see you on the following dates: 6 August 20 August 3 September 17 September 1 October www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk Twitter @PerkinsGER and Facebook www.facebook.com/ThePerkinsGreatEasternRun

Floral fashion

Woohoo, the sun finally came out to play, and whilst he was wearing his hat we were inundated with floral attire on the high street. Wherever you look there are floral prints on dresses through to florals for the guys too – it’s a trend that’s remained strong all season. I've put together some outfits that are easy wearing and will keep us cool on these remaining summer days. Kimonos have been around for a while this year and aren’t going away just yet. This kimono from Top Shop in Outfit at Serpentine Green has to be my favourite of all the looks. I love the clashing of colours with the vest underneath. Like I said florals aren't just for the girls, here I've shown how you guys too can rock this look.

Paul’s Big Day Out in Peterborough

BBC Radio Cambridgeshires Bigger Breakfast host Paul Stainton, fundraisers, opera star Paul Potts and ESP’s Mikey Clarke

On Saturday July 19, Peterborough city centre was home to the BBC’s Big Day Out. The free, family fun day was organised by BBC Radio Cambridgeshire in aid of Sue Ryder’s ‘Raise the Roof’ for Thorpe Hall campaign. Sue Ryder (which provides incredible care for people with life-changing illnesses) aims to raise £6 million to build a new local hospice.

ESP’s Mikey Clarke grabs a few words with singer Paul Potts… beautifully from West End shows. And if that wasn’t enough, there was even a performance from the former Britain’s Got Talent winner, Paul Potts.

show. To still be doing what I love to do seven years later is more than I could have ever dreamed of. I owe a lot to that programme and the opportunities it has given me.”

David Harvey, Managing Editor of BBC Radio Cambridgeshire told me – “The Big Day Out was a fantastic day and we’re so proud to be supporting Sue Ryder’s Raise The Roof campaign for a new Hospice at Thorpe Hall. All the bands sounded brilliant, the crowds turned out in their masses, the choirs hit the high notes, the Cybermen and Tardis thrilled the adults and children alike and Paul Potts just rocked Cathedral Square! The buckets were full and pledges of further support to Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall were many. We’re thrilled to help raise the profile and help Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Raise the Roof!”

Unbelievably, despite winning BGT in June 2007, Paul didn't quit his job at Carphone Warehouse until March 2008. “I hung on because I couldn't quite believe what was happening to me,” he said. “I felt like I was dreaming and that it would all just disappear. I was getting letters from my employers asking what I was going to do as they needed to know whether to replace me, and I didn’t know what to say back.”

I was able to grab a few words with British tenor Paul Potts before he went on the stage. He was pleased to be back in our city. “I was here back in 2008 performing at

On the topic of the popular television show, Paul told me his favourite act to come out of it. “I’m a big fan of Diversity. They’ve done so well to carry on going for so long in such a difficult industry and they still keep things fresh. I’ve had the pleasure of working with the guys a few times in the past and they’re all great.” You may have seen the film One Chance, a British flick based on Paul Potts’s life.“I found the film hilarious,” he said.“I was relieved to have James Corden play me because he’s such a funny guy and I really wanted for the movie to be a comedy.” Paul’s memoir (which goes by the same name) is not quite so light-hearted. Much of it goes into his difficult childhood – where he was regularly bullied. “Singing in the choir saved me from some of the bullying,” he explained. “I would rehearse on Fridays and the bullies couldn’t be bothered to wait. I’m not really sure why I got a hard time. I was always just being myself.”

The sun was shining and the atmosphere was incredible – there was literally something for everyone to enjoy on the outdoor stage, with traditional Portuguese food, drink, arts and crafts also available as the event joined forces with the city’s first Portuguese festival. Entertainment included The One Eyed Cats who got the crowds dancing to their rock ‘n’ roll and rhythm and blues. Local choirs including Peterborough Voices, Sing for Life Women and The Take Note Community sang songs

the beautiful Broadway Theatre,” he told me. “I’ve actually spent a lot of time here recently due to the fact I’ve been just outside of Peterborough recording my new album – which should be released on my birthday in October.” Most people will know Paul as the man who won the very first series of Britain's Got Talent. He explained, “I honestly didn’t expect to get past the first stage of the

It was ultimately Paul Potts who had the last laugh. Since winning Britain’s Got Talent, the singer’s gone on to do some incredible things. One highlight being – “One New Year’s Eve, I performed to over one million people. You couldn’t see the end of the crowds – it was just crazy.” To find out more about Paul Potts, visit www.paulpottsofficial.com and for further details on the new Hospice appeal, go to www.sueryder.org.

paparazzi Caught in the act? PORTUGUESE FESTIVAL AND CITY NIGHTLIFE... The sun shone on the city’s first ever Portuguese Festival and the air was filled with the delicious smells of traditional foods, music, singing and dancing in a celebration organised by Peterborough’s Portuguese community. It coincided with the BBC’s Big Day Out, which you can read more about in this issue and which saw everything from Dr Who characters (‘Whovians’) to opera singer Paul Potts perform live. Mike Harris was there to capture the action for ESP. Meanwhile Mitch Brewster was out an about again in Edwards, Red Room and Flares capturing the nightlife action on Broadway. As ever the venues were buzzing with an up for it crowd eager to get snapped. View all our Paparazzi pictures on www.espmag.co.uk or our facebook page.

Sharon McAllister chats to Pixie Lott and discovers this pop star’s got plenty of soul and isn’t ‘nasty’ at all… “I’m a laid back kinda girl,” says Pixie Lott and I can vouch for that as she patiently battles through the stuttery break up of an intermittent mobile phone connection during our interview. After back to back interviews throughout the day to promote her self titled new album, standing under a tree in London waiting for her taxi there’s no sign of boredom or grumpiness from this young pop star as she enthusiastically answers my questions. Despite being grilled all day about it she’s clearly excited about releasing her third album which she’s carefully crafted over 2 years and is her most personal yet. Known for her Brigitte Bardot style blonde hair and eyeliner, that love of the 60s look extends to the soul sound of the era she grew up listening to and says is her inspiration.

“I like the up tempo because they always get the crowds going but I’m definitely into the ballads the most because they’re the most heartfelt and emotional. When I perform them live I can really get into the character of them and just as a singer they’re the most ‘singey’ songs… you can really let loose and go for it.” Talking of getting into character some of you may have seen Pixie making her TV drama debut earlier this year in an episode of Inspector George Gently, something she says was an amazing experience. “I love doing new things so I’d love to get involved in that again and do something in the film world at some point if the part was right.

“I’ve finally done an album of the sound that I love...” “I’ve finally done an album of the sound that I love and it’s the same soundtrack through the whole thing. I haven’t gone off on a tangent at all. The last album half of it was soul and the other half was dancey pop, it was like a mixture, whereas this time it’s the first time I’ve done an album which has that consistent sound from start to finish which is exciting. “And also I just think I’ve grown up and matured so hopefully this will sound like my most mature album.” This she says is more purely Pixie and she was determined to get it right – “I’ve been writing and recording it for the last 2 years, it’s taken a while but I just wanted to be a perfectionist and because it’s an album I’ve always wanted to do, I just wanted to be completely happy with it.” Pixie is keen to get out there with her new material having released debut track Nasty a few months back and is looking forward to her V Festival appearance where she plans to showcase some new tunes along with some of her well known hits. At only 24 she’s achieved so much already but why does someone so young relate so well to a musical era from decades ago? “I think it’s because it’s just the best music,” she explains. “The singers were the best, they have great voices and they’re always telling such a story and there’s so much soul and more meat to it… also the songs are just cleverly written, the melodies and lyrics are always really strong. They’re timeless.” So fans can expect a much more soul-filled album and I wonder after all this time perfecting its sound which tracks she favours most now its ready for release.

“I’d love to do something that’s just a bit different from my personality maybe a part that’s quite dark or something that people wouldn’t expect so it’s more of a challenge for me to do. Music will always be my number one but I did really enjoy it.” Any film directors out there I think that’s a clear hint – and like Adele she wouldn’t be averse to belting out a Bond tune either – “I love the Bond movies so that would be brilliant and I love the style of the Bond songs they’re always really grand – I’d be up for it!” Pixie is a stylish, great looking girl with a handsome boyfriend and a successful pop career, but girls you’ll be pleased to know that just like the rest of us she has her issues with herself! “I wish I worked out more – I need to get back into it,” she reveals “and personality wise my time keeping, lateness and forgetfulness is really bad so I’m still working on that!” During our chat Pixie seemed unpretentious and down to earth, pleasantly lacking in any pop star diva qualities and was flattered to be this month’s ESP cover star. Her album, titled Pixie Lott is released on August 4, she’ll be appearing at V Festival on August 16 and 17 and there’ll be another single out towards the end of September so it’s a busy end to her year. Read more of my interview with Pixie online on www.espmag.co.uk where she talks about surviving the music industry, collaborations and… Strictly Come Dancing, plus she answers some of the questions you tweeted to us. www.pixielott.com

ESP chats to BGT’s

Bailey McConnell

Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist, Bailey McConnell made his first appearance outside of his home town right here in Queensgate recently and rocked the place! He performed four songs for a crowd of screaming teens, and according to ESP’s

Mikey Clarke (who hosted the event) it was like One Direction were in the city! Mikey grabbed an exclusive chat with the 15 year-old singer who was there to launch a campaign to highlight late night shopping every Thursday and Friday night in Queensgate. Before going on stage he told Mikey – “I genuinely didn’t think I’d get to the semi-finals of the show – particularly as I’d slightly annoyed the producers. I

changed my song choice literally right before I went onto the stage. I was supposed to be singing a cover but thought last minute that it would be better performing one of my own songs. This worried the producers but it paid off.” After performing four songs flawlessly, he told Mikey – “I am so overwhelmed by the support of everyone here in Peterborough. I can honestly say this has been the best gig yet, I am absolutely buzzing from the atmosphere.”

Queensgate is open late on Thursdays and Fridays until 8pm throughout the year. The Centre’s Red car park is also open until 11.30pm seven days a week. Parking is FREE after 5.30pm. Read Mikey’s full interview with Bailey McConnell and lots more on www.espmag.co.uk

Gavin Miller

Cast: Simon Bird, James Buckley, Joe Thomas, Blake Harrison Director: Damon Beesley and Iain Morris After the runaway success of the first film – which came out of nowhere to become the biggest comedy movie of all-time in the UK – the boys are back.

The actors of the hit E4 series said they’d never do a sequel, but unsurprisingly the hapless crew – Will (Simon Bird), Jay (James Buckley), Simon (Joe Thomas) and Neil (Blake Harrison) – have

Released been enticed into a bumper pay day sequel, this time heading to Oz for their next holiday. That’s because Jay has described Australia as ‘the sex capital of the world’ for their latest comedic endeavours – which will surely get the box office tills ringing once again.

THE EXPENDABLES III

INTO THE STORM

Released: August 14

Released: August 22

Sly Stallone has promised to dispense with the tongue-in-cheek comedy that plagued the sequel, and get back to some gritty action in the third instalment – which boasts the biggest ensemble cast yet.

It’s been nearly twenty years since there’s been a decent big-budget film based around the phenomenon of tornadoes – the Bill Paxton/Helen Hunt-starring Twister – and early trailers indicate this could fill that void.

Mel Gibson joins the mix as bad guy, ruthless arms dealer Conrad Stonebanks – who also founded the Expendables program with Stallone’s Barney Ross – with Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Kelsey Grammer, UFC fighter Ronda Rousey and even Harrison Ford, joining Barney’s team.

The Hobbit star Richard Armitage is one of the few recognisable faces in a pretty much unknown cast, as Silverton is ravaged by an unprecedented onslaught of erratic and deadly cyclones that will tear the town apart.

Of course regulars Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and Arnie Schwarzenegger return for the violence-fuelled high-octane series.

www.espmag.co.uk

This viscerally-shot thriller literally promises to throw you into the ‘eye of the storm’ – with some incredibly lifelike special effects – which could make this a surprise hit.

PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE Released: August 8 It was a no-brainer by Disney to convert the initially straight-to-video Planes – which was later polished for a cinematic release last year – into a cash-cow, with a quick sequel taking flight to capitalise on the $220m worldwide haul of the first movie. When Dusty (Dane Cook) learns that he may never race again due to a damaged engine, he joins forces with helicopter Blade Ranger (Ed Harris) and his team, to courageously battle a massive wildfire.

EA SPORTS UFC (PS4/XONE) Out now The Ultimate Fighting Championship gaming experience is unfortunately going to have to slightly regress before getting better – with EA taking over the franchise from the now-defunct THQ.

###

WHAT IF

The series has been properly spruced up by the trademark EA touches such as sensational graphics – worthy of next-gen consoles – with superb production values that really give the game a UFC pay-per-view feel. Sadly the atmosphere of the fights is generally lost in transition, with control mechanics that don’t quite match the pumping adrenaline that flows through UFC’s veins. But for a first effort this still has a tremendous grounding for future entries – as you star as Michael Bisping, Chuck Liddell, Georges St-Pierre and co.

Released: August 20 The early reviews for this rom-com are extremely positive – giving weight to Brit star Daniel Radcliffe as a stand-out actor post-Harry Potter. He stars as a medical school dropout who strikes up a friendship with animator Chantry (Zoe Kazan) – who already has a long-term boyfriend – but their chemistry is so undeniable it begs the question: could the love of your life be your best friend? Co-stars Star Wars VII cast member Adam Driver.

SNIPER ELITE 3

(XONE/PS4/360/PS3) Out now Out of the two uniquely Sniper-based franchises on the market – Elite continues to hit the spot compared to the Ghost Warrior alternative.

####

Using the exotically deadly terrain of North Africa during the backdrop of World War II, Sniper Elite 3 competently expands on solid foundations laid down in previous versions of the fan-favourite series. As American operative Karl Fairburne, taking out the Nazis with pinpoint ‘Killcam’ sharp-shooting accuracy has never been more satisfying. A very linear story and haphazard enemy intelligence sadly doesn’t do the more open world feel justice – but there’s still much to enjoy.

LUCY Released: August 22 Scarlett Johansson gets a rare lead vehicle in this movie from action-thriller aficionado Luc Beeson (Leon and The Fifth Element) as a femme fatale who gets a drug implanted into her system that allows her to use 100% of her brain’s capacity (compared to the usual 10%), which enables her to turn the tables on her captors and evolve into a merciless warrior. Morgan Freeman co-stars in his usual secondary role to add bankability.

MOTOGP 14 (PS4/360/PS3/PSV/PC) Out now This is arguably the best pound-for-pound racer on PS4 at the moment – after providing a marked improvement over previous entries. With a graphical overhaul, refined handling and the most expansive version of the game yet – with five bike classes, 18 tracks and more than 100 riders – MotoGP 14 really does provide an exhilarating experience.

####

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR

TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE DARK SPARK

Released: August 29 Co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller reunite to bring Miller’s visually-stunning graphic novels back to the big screen after a nine-year hiatus. Only time will tell whether cinema-goers’ demand has been tempered by the long wait, as fan favourites Nancy (Jessica Alba), Marv (Mickey Rourke) and Hartigan (Bruce Willis) return for two classic stories rolled into one – with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Eva Green and Josh Brolin joining the fray.

It’s still a little rough-around-the-edges, with a few minor glitches and visual problems, but with a brand new career mode and greatly improved physics this deserves immense praise.

(XONE/PS4/WIIU/360/PS3/3DS) Out now After impressing with two previous Cybertron-monikered iterations, there’s no disguising these robots simply don’t cut it in this latest version – despite an impressive array of weaponry and decent multiplayer Escalation mode.

##

But sadly the storyline – as you switch between Autobots and Decepticons missions – is fairly dull, the ‘transforming’ and fighting mechanics extremely clunky, and it sadly ends up all looking rather dated.

TOUR DE FRANCE: SEASON 2014 (PS3/360/PS4/PC) Out now Previous attempts to get cycling on the gaming map were extremely dull experiences – but this is probably about the best iteration that has been made of the sport.

REVIEW ###

Improved graphics, cycling mechanics and inclusion of an ‘autopilot’ switch, are counteracted by poor presentation, lack of decent tutorials and background graphical deficiencies, but for cycling enthusiasts this is the best version yet – if not exactly a Bradley Wiggins beater.

VALIANT HEARTS: THE GREAT WAR (PS4/XONE/PS3/360/PC) Out now With a beautifully-crafted artistic style and a thick slice of ingenuity to boot, this downloadable puzzle-adventure tells the tale of five people all touched by the First World War.

Some of the narration and historical facts are a little in-your-face, but the variety of puzzles – which go from simple object collecting to safe cracking – are an engaging accompaniment to the generally trenches-based story, all for around 12 quid. www.espmag.co.uk

ESP DANCERS HELP WITH Karen Lennon hits the dancefloor with the ESP Dance Crew

BIG SURPRISE

The ESP Dance Crew get involved in all sorts of events and promotions but a recent appearance was something new! The girls were involved in a ‘Surprise Surprise’ style stunt which made one event particularly special for a Bourne woman. The Touched by Pink Ball at the Holiday Inn was organised by Jane Mulhern, a breast cancer survivor, and her friend Karen Lennon to raise funds for the Breast Cancer and Oncology unit at the city hospital. The Dance Crew gave an unexpected dance performance on the night, but the bigger surprise for Jane was when Karen suddenly joined them on the dancefloor for their routine! “It was a massive surprise,” says Karen. “Jane just couldn’t believe it was me. Nobody knew I was going to do it and I was on such a high afterwards as I’d been so nervous. The ESP girls were superb – so good to work with, they really made it and I can’t thank them enough.” Britain's most decorated Winter Paralympian, Jade Etherington, was one of the special guests at the hugely successful night attended by 160 people which raised over £9,000.

If you’d like the ESP Dance Crew to get involved in your event please email office@espmag.co.uk. See more images on www.espmag.co.uk and our facebook page.

LOCAL

FOOD

NEW ITALIAN IN WHITTLESEY There’s a new Italian restaurant now open in Whittlesey – Caserta Vecchia – on Queen Street. It’s a traditional Italian restaurant serving authentic dishes where you can even choose your own seafood direct from the tank! Initimate and cosy it has wooden beams and a homely feel. Call 07888 137507 for more details or find them on facebook.

ARGO LOUNGE TO OPEN IN THE CITY We love some good news so it’s great to hear that the Bristol based company Loungers Limited are to turn the Barista café and Natwest units on Bridge Street into a new all day café/bar. They already run 49 of these relaxed style venues (known as Lounges) around the country and it’s hoped the Argo Lounge will open later this year or early 2015. The company also owns the Cosy Club chain, one of which is in Stamford, and we can expect a similar vibe to the look and feel of this new Lounge complete with retro, quirky interior, vintage sofas and dramatic artwork. It will be less formal than the Cosy Club format though and won’t have table service, but is designed to suit everyone. Director Nick Collins told ESP – “The city council has invested a lot into the regeneration of that central area and we hope to form a part of that. Loungers are very community minded – we really engage

with the local area and the venues are really for people to use as they want, whether it’s a group of mums with their children meeting for a coffee at 10am or friends meeting for a drink and food at night with candlelit tables.” They promise a large selection of coffees and food including tapas, burgers and brunch. The name is loosely linked to Katharine of Aragon and the company are investing around half a million in the scheme which will also create around 30 new jobs. There’s no doubt the Cathedral Square area has been transformed over recent years and we’re loving the changes. We can’t wait for this latest cool addition to the city centre dining scene. www.thelounges.co.uk

BEWICHED BY BRIDGE STREET It’s time to get ‘bewiched’ by the al fresco dining trend along Bridge Street as a new addition joins the line-up of coffee shops and eateries in the city centre. Just opened where The Clock and Limon used to be, Bewiched is an independent chain and Peterborough is the fourth with others to be found in Kettering, Corby and Wellingborough. They’ve been opening at the rate of one every eight months so it’s good to see Peterborough was a priority. They tell us they decided to open here as they wanted a city centre location amongst other known brands to stand out as an alternative option and received welcoming feedback on social media. Bewiched use locally roasted coffee beans and focus on barista training set to the highest industry standard. Promising staff who are passionate about their job and food freshly prepared on the premises. www.bewiched.co.uk

TEST RIDE NEW HONDA @ WHEELS It’s been a great year for new models coming into the motorcycling market and Honda have just added another couple of beauties!

Photos: Chris Brudenell

The all new CB650F is packed with the latest technology whilst retaining a classic retro street fighter look. With its inline 4 engine, LED light clusters and ABS as standard the CB650F is a bike to be taken seriously. Fuel economy is a very respectable 59.3 so it’s easily justifiable as a fun commuter as well as a focused weekend machine. Priced at just £6,399 on the road with payments available from under £100 the CB650F might be just what you’re looking for. Also launched alongside the CB is the sportier CBR650F with the more sports focused rider in mind. Demonstration bikes are available in store at Wheels Motorcycles in Fengate so why not book yourself a test ride today and experience it for yourself!

Triumph Daytona 955i This month we spoke to Whittlesey based Mechanic Ken Simmons, whose pride and joy is a Triumph Daytona 955i W reg motorcycle, which he bought from a friend in 2010.

CAR SHOW THE VINTAGE WAY If motorcycles aren’t your bag then fans of vintage and historic cars should head to the showground’s Peterborough Arena in Alwalton on Saturday August 9 where the Vintage Sports Car Club celebrates its 80th anniversary.

Ken said, “Riding and owning bikes seem to be in my blood. I joined a rock & roll club when I was 16 years old and fell in love with the noise and smell of British motorcycles. I also enjoy watching the World and British Superbikes and Moto GP. “My ultimate dream is to ride a race track myself one day, and feel the speeds those riders can reach. The thing I love most is the freedom I feel when I’m on my bike, with no traffic jams or hold ups – just the open road.”

More than 800 cars and amazing vehicles of the vintage variety will be on display, including an extensive array of pre-1960s vehicles. There will also be a commemorative area dedicated to The Great War featuring veteran and Edwardian cars, military vehicles and a few surprises.

Ken’s bike has plenty of low end torque so he can select a gear and ‘just go’, without having to change up and down the gearbox frequently. He’d never consider buying another bike at the moment, unless it was another Triumph! Ken has some great memories on his bike. “I remember when the missus and I went to Wales for a biking holiday; we stayed at a converted farm. To reach the entrance, we were astounded to see that the path was nearly vertical! So I drove half way up and realised I was suddenly going backwards not forwards – even my bike couldn’t handle it. The next thing I know, the wife’s got off and is dragging our luggage behind her…. She wasn’t happy, but we had a good laugh about it later and a good biking holiday in the end.” Ken says the best feeling about being on the road is the freedom, as one of the badges on his jacket says, ‘Live to ride, ride to live.’ “It’s a feeling I think only

bikers know and that’s why I’m out on it 365 days a year if I can be. It’s only the snow that’ll stop me. It’s definitely in my blood and I can’t see me stopping any time soon.” What’s your Pride and Joy? Keep your contributions coming in whether it’s a car, bike, truck whatever – and it can be wheels you once owned and loved or your current wheels. Email office@espmag.co.uk and we could be featuring yours.

This is a great event for the whole family, plus there’s a large trade village packed with memorabilia and car parts. The family fun includes sideshows, traditional funfair games and sweet stalls. On the day admission (no advance tickets) is £5 per adult and under 16s go free. For more details visit www.vscc.co.uk

IT’S STILTON

TAKE A BREAK THIS SUMMER The SaferPeterborough Partnership is warning motorists of the danger of falling asleep at the wheel and is urging them to take regular breaks on journeys during the summer holidays. The only real cure for tiredness is sleep. A coffee or energy drink and a 20-minute nap are short term solutions. Research has shown that almost 20 per cent of accidents on major roads are sleep-related and they’re more likely to result in fatality or serious injury.

BIKE SHOW TIME! Every year the Peterborough branch of the Triumph Owners Club organise a free entry bike show and meet in Stilton.

Clair George, Senior Road Safety Officer for the SaferPeterborough Partnership, told ESP – “There are plenty of signs of tiredness, not just yawning and struggling to keep your eyes open, you may have difficulty concentrating and find yourself lane drifting.

This year’s event is on Saturday August 9 and the fun starts at 11am. Last time around, almost 400 motorcycles turned up except me of course, because I always have an excuse. This year I’ve got friends over for the weekend, I just have to convince one of them to ride pillion with me, so that I can join in with my fellow motorcycle aficionados.

“With holidays approaching and many motorists setting off on longer journeys than normal we are urging drivers to take a break so that their holidays don’t end before they have even started.”

Everyone’s welcome to this show no matter what you ride. There’ll be live music and a DJ as well as plenty of bike-related stalls where you can purchase bike kit and clothing. See you there (hopefully!).

CLASSICS RETURN TO STAMFORD

BRING YOUR PRIDE AND JOY TO EMBANKMENT SHOW At last there’s going to be a city show for owners and lovers of classic and vintage vehicles. The Peterborough Classic and Vintage Vehicle show, which is being organised by the city council, will take place on the Embankment on Saturday and Sunday September 13-14. More than 200 vehicles have already registered and they’ve still got capacity for plenty more classic and vintage cars, motorcycles, scooters, commercial and agricultural vehicles, buses, ex-military and other forms of transport from yesteryear to modern classics. There is no cost for vehicle admission and the show is free to enter for the public. People bringing their vehicles have the option to stay overnight with onsite camping facilities, entertainment and refreshments available.

The 11th Stamford Round Table Car Show returns on Sunday August 24 on Stamford Meadows.

Families will be able to enjoy activities for children including a funfair and other entertainment.

This is a free family event and runs from 10am until 5pm. It’s usually packed with around 500 vintage, classic and prestige sports car of every description – perfect for any car fanatic!

Councillor Paula Thacker MBE, who first championed the idea of organising the event, told ESP – “There is a strong appetite for classic vehicle shows in our region and we are delighted to be organising what promises to be an excellent event. I travel to quite a few shows that take place on the outskirts of our city and thought it was about time we hosted one on our riverside Embankment, which is the perfect backdrop for the show.”

KUSTOM KULTURE BLASTOFF IS BACK Back for its fifth great year the Kustom Kulture Blastoff on August 30 and 31 will be bigger and more colourful than ever before. Taking place at the Springfield's Event Centre in Spalding, it’s basically a rock’n’roll art show which features some fantastic vehicles too.

From its roots in the youth culture of 50’s America, Kustom Art is the eye catching designs on anything from big rig trucks to a skate deck. I’m talking fantastic paintwork on the custom bike, trike or scooter... flames down the side of that hot rod, muscle car or your VW. It’s classic American cars and Airstreams which are art forms in their own right. There’ll be live bands performing, Burlesque performances and DJs but for car enthusiasts Sunday’s ‘show and shine’ will bring in some of the best painted vehicles in the region. Entry is only £7.50 in advance for the day. For more details visit www.springfieldsevents.co.uk

So far several owners’ clubs will be represented including Jaguar, Triumph, Volkswagen, MG, Mini and Ford. The variety of vehicles confirmed range from Ferraris and Rolls Royces to Morris Minors and Ford Anglias. Several classic fire engines, vintage caravans and trucks will also be in attendance. To register your vehicle for the show and for more information email city.centre.services@peterborough.gov.uk or paula.thacker@peterborough.gov.uk Alternatively, telephone Paula Thacker MBE on: 07885 240494. www.espmag.co.uk

Thousands of women united at Ferry Meadows in Peterborough for this year’s Race for Life event with one mission in mind – to conquer cancer. ESP supported the event, hosted by Heart FM, and the ESP Dance Crew were there to warm up the crowds before the women-only 5k and got everyone in fighting spirit despite the showers! Now Cancer Research UK is calling on Peterborough’s formidable army of mightymums, gutsy-grans, feisty friends and go-getting girls to make every step count by paying in their sponsorship money as soon as possible. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring womenonly series of events which raises millions of pounds every year to fund life-saving research. Julie Braithwaite, Race for Life event manager for Peterborough, said – “I want to say a heartfelt ‘thanks’ to everyone who took part in Race for Life, and their supporters, as well as our heroic volunteers. “It was a fantastic day, full of emotion, courage, tears and laughter as over 2,800 women joined forces to show cancer who’s boss.

For info on returning sponsorship money, or to make a donation, visit www.raceforlife.org. The Peterborough Race for Life event is happening again next year on Tuesday July 7, 2015 and you can sign up today on the website. See more photos on www.espmag.co.uk and our facebook page.

“Many people don’t realise that their entry fee only covers the cost of the event. It’s the sponsorship money that really makes a difference.”

Pop Around Peterborough ESP’s Mikey Clarke says the rainy weather didn't dampen spirits at this year’s Pop Around Peterborough charity walk‌ Regional Fundraising Manager for Arthritis Research UK. “Once the walkers had begun their journey I was able to take a moment and reflect on the day so far,â€? says Mikey. “To be honest, I was emotional. I was absolutely chuffed by the turn out – especially considering the weather. The atmosphere was brilliant. Even in the rain people were still smiling and raring to go. The fact that over 100 people turned up left me genuinely overwhelmed.â€?

Thanks to the sponsorship money handed in already, Pop Around Peterborough has made over ÂŁ3,000 so far, with around ÂŁ2,000 still expected. That money goes directly into supporting the 10 million people in the UK affected by Arthritis (including 15,000 children), which averages out to one in every six people. This means that in Peterborough alone, over 30,000 people will be suffering with the condition. If this has inspired you to do your own fundraising event, please contact Mikey by emailing: m.clarke@arthritisresearchuk.org or call 01733 331721.

This year’s prizes included a corporate suite and buffet at the Greyhound Stadium (worth ÂŁ600), a signed Warwick Davis book, family days out, meals in local restaurants and vouchers for local stores.

Starting at the Boathouse pub, participants were treated to some pre-walk entertainment – including a warm up by the ESP Dance Crew, belly dancers, free face-painting and live music from former X Factor contestant, Nicole Lawrence. There was also an appearance from Lotso the bear from Toy Story 3, Princess Anna from the hit movie Frozen and also Mugly the World’s Ugliest Dog (who’s starred in his own Channel 5 documentary). Good and bad bacteria – which is winninG the battle for your body? if you’re feelinG off colour maybe it’s the bad Guys… However so much of our modern living upsets this perfect balance and causes dysbiosis which is an imbalance of our microflora for more unfavourable ones, some of those factors are: • Certain medical drugs especially antibiotics (whilst they can be effective, they may also kill good bacteria) as well as antacids and more • Poor choice of foods such as excess sugar, refined carbohydrates, low fibre diets • Alcohol • Smoking • Stress and more When the balance is upset and not given the chance to recover then we may start to notice symptoms such as IBS, fatigue, weight gain, joint pains, immunity issues, skin outbreaks, bloating and more. Inflammatory bowel disease and autoimmunity may also have a link to an imbalance in our microbes. What is emerging is that diet has a powerful influence on our gut microbes and that they have an intimate relationship with the food we eat in a positive way (as well as negative when eating poor choices). You may find it hard to believe that we have a world of microbes living in us and on us outnumbering the trillions of cells that make up the human body 10x, however our cells are far larger than that of the microbes. Our human microbes (or microbiota/microflora as it’s commonly referred to) multiply from birth and continue to develop over the first few years of life to build our health. There are hundreds of families of microbes in our digestive system, lungs, skin, female reproductive tract and other mucosal surfaces. Without our microbes we couldn’t live, firstly we need them to know the good from the bad coming into our body, they are our first line of defence from invaders which come from food, drinks and everything we come into contact with. There are possibly 1,000’s of various species of micro flora which gives us an idea of the importance of this balance even if we don’t fully understand them completely. It’s incredible to imagine this vast ‘ecosystem’ we have living within us and on us and that it may support our health and wellbeing in numerous ways such as: • • • • • • • •

Educating our immune cells and keeping the immune system in balance Regulating our metabolism, producing energy Helping to break down our foods and helping us to utilize them Helping to detoxify toxins and carcinogens Possibly lowering cholesterol Promoting healthy bowel movements Promoting production of some vitamins Modulate inflammation, may have effect on our mood and behaviour and much more

Fibre can help to feed the good guys so too can a diet that’s high in dietary phenols which are antioxidants in plants so when eating these you not only get the benefits of these various antioxidants, you’re also providing prebiotic which are literally good food for our friendly bacteria whilst inhibiting the growth of the unfavourable type. Some of the best sources are berries and berry juices, fruits with skins on, herbs and spices. Other great sources of prebiotics are asparagus, onions, leeks, chicory, Jerusalem artichoke, beetroot and banana to name a few. Fermented foods (which we use so little of now we have fridges and freezers) were once the way we preserved foods but when made correctly they also contain strains of friendly bacteria such as kefir, yoghurt, sauerkraut and miso (there are many more). Whilst it is good to eat a wide variety of foods it isn’t a good idea to add in fibre and some of the above foods too quickly as this can cause temporary wind and bloating! This is happening as the microflora isn’t keeping up with the quick changes. So if you know you’ve not been eating a good diet then make a slow change to reduce these issues. Taking probiotic supplements may be necessary for some but always take advice for your particular issues. In good gut health, Karen Karen is a registered Nutritionist, member of Bant, Colonic Hydrotherapist, Life Coach based in Peterborough. www.karendevine.co.uk

It was the end of a comedy era on Sunday July 20 when the Monty Python team took to the stage for the very last time at London's 02 arena. The Monty Python Live (Mostly): One Down, Five To Go shows saw the surviving stars performing live together for the first time in 30 years with the very last show broadcast live on UK Gold, but also live to fans in theatres across the country including the Key Theatre where the sold out audience enjoyed the cracking atmosphere. It was a superb night of uproarious hilarity featuring Python's best songs and most absurd and surreal sketches together with a few topical references.

I think the only way the show could've been any more topical would have been if Eric Idle had told the audience he'd managed to get Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons to appear as a special guest, and then David Luiz walked on and trod on a stage full of garden rakes that hit him repeatedly in the face. The final live show was a fitting way for Eric Idle, John Cleese, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam to sign-off. 'The four Yorkshiremen' and 'The Dead Parrot' sketch were obvious highlights, the silliness and quoteability of them haven't diminished over the years, but I'd also put the 'argument' sketch alongside

I'M NOT LOVING IT You may have noticed last month that McDonalds introduced a new burger to the menu called 'The Big Tasty'. I haven't been able to bring myself to try one, mainly because the swirly lettering on their promotional poster makes it look to me like they've introduced a burger called 'The Big Pasty'! Not a particularly appetising thought, although if Maccy D's are looking for a famous big pasty bloke that likes advertising stuff on telly I'd suggest they contact Joe Hart.

them as one of the most beautifully written and performed sketches in comedy history. It's such a simple premise, but it's rarely been bettered. The show climaxed with a singalong of ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’ that featured a number of famous faces joining the Pythons on stage including Eddie Izzard, Mike Myers and one of our local acting legends Warwick Davis (soon to host the new series of Celebrity Squares!) If you missed the show, there's a chance to see the encore performance at the Key Theatre on Saturday August 2. Call 01733 207239 or visit www.vivacitypeterborough.com. Tickets are £12.

ESP HITS ANOTHER MILESTONE Finally, if you glance at this month's front cover you'll see that August 2014 is ESP's 180th issue! As a big fan of darts there is no sweeter sound than hearing the crowd roar 'one hundred and eiiighty'. During my time at ESP I've been fortunate enough to have had these words ringing in my ears when I was invited by our local darting legend Martin 'Wolfie' Adams, the three-time BDO World Champion and three time Winmau World Master winner when he was defending his World Title at Lakeside, Frimley Green. Out of all the adventures I've had with ESP over the years, that day remains a firm favourite! Cheers Wolfie and here's to you hitting many more 180's in your career.

ESP’s new columnist Neil Gilby brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

Gabriel Zakuani, a man who’s pulled on the shirt over 200 times in all competitions for Posh and made five appearances for his native DR Congo. In January this year the fans’ favourite left the club by mutual consent in search of pastures new and pastures new he found, signing a short contract for the Greek Super League outfit Kalloni where he made 15 appearances.

I

n his absence Posh won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and made the League 1 play-off semi-final before the shock news arrived in June that Zakuani (in his words) was ‘returning home’. I caught up with the man, the myth, the legend for an exclusive ESP interview to find out why he classes Peterborough as his home. You’ve said that coming back to Peterborough is like ‘returning home’. Why do you feel this way? “Peterborough has been a big part of my life. When I did come back, I just realised it is where I want to be and where my family is used to. My kids go to school in the city and I am delighted to be back.” When it came to leaving the club, how difficult was that decision and how long did it take to sink in?

44

www.espmag.co.uk

“It was tough. It is one of those things. You have to look at the bigger picture. At the time, it was the right thing for both parties. I didn’t want to sit on the sidelines, I wanted to play and at the time I wasn’t playing and that is why the move came about. As time went on, both parties realised that we missed each other and I was glad about the interest.” In the meantime, you went to Greece to play in the Super League, how did that move come about? “They’d been tracking me since the African Cup of Nations. They had watched me. They came in for me when I was available and I fancied a bit of a change in a different country. It was a fresh start and I did well out there. I had an offer to stay, but when I had the chance to come back to Peterborough, I didn’t think twice.”

What was it like out in Greece, what was playing football in that country like? “It is certainly different. In the UK, everything is geared about football. It takes over your life. You hear from the fans. In Greece, it is a bit more relaxed. You play the game on the Saturday and that result is forgotten by the Monday and you can get on with your life. There are more things to do in Greece because of the weather too!” While you were away, the club were successful in the JPT, was that hard to take? “It didn’t hurt me, I wanted to be part of it of course I did, but that is football. I was disappointed not to experience that day, but was happy for everyone else

connected to the football club.” How determined are you for this season to be a success? “I’ve been here a long time and was comfortable, I think going away has given me a point to prove. I’m hungry for success. I’ve come back fit, my body fat is low, I’m eating properly, I just need to put the performances in now.” You have been a fans’ favourite ever since you joined the club, how important are the supporters to you? “I made a good start when I joined and since then I have never looked back. I communicate with fans on Twitter, I try and do competitions and I show my appreciation after games. I think we have a good relationship. We work well together.”

How important is Twitter to you? “Twitter is a great tool for me. I don’t get carried away though. One week you can be a villain and the next you can be a hero. When you have a bad game, you need to think before you tweet and that’s what I do, I step back before putting anything out in public.” How difficult is it for you to get the shopping without being recognised in the city? “It is quite difficult to be fair, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I like to think I am approachable. I ate in a restaurant with my Mrs and the owner came up and sat down and started talking about football. Completely ruined my date! I think I would worry more when I am not noticed! I enjoy

talking to people of all ages. When I was growing up I would have loved to have met people who influenced me, so for me meeting the fans is important.” You have mentioned you live in the city, what is it about Peterborough that you like so much? “The city is buzzing when the football club do well, you saw that with the play-off success. My aim is to keep the place buzzing. I like to get out and about to see the city. I do my shopping here, I very rarely go back to London these days. Peterborough is my home now.”

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…

Festival time! And when the weather’s good watching good musicians with a cool drink in your hand is hard to beat. In July The Ploughman held its annual real ale and music festival and I went down to see Motor City Vipers headline on Saturday night. As always they gave a really strong performance full of soul and harmony and they’ve certainly earned a strong reputation amongst the area’s soul fans. You have a chance to see them at the Beer Festival on the Saturday night. Before MCV I watched a very talented solo performance from Zakk Zoot Gray. He features a wide range of music including some Ed Sheeran, Maroon5 and some older classic covers all performed acoustically. Well worth seeing for both his cover versions and original material. Catch him at this year’s Thorney Music Festival. It’s going to be a good month!

Not long now till the Peterborough Beer Festival. The most eagerly awaited social event in the area is on at the Embankment and the music lined up is once again guaranteed to entertain all over the five day period of August 19 to August 23. And I’m very pleased to see that a lot of local bands are booked for the event this year. The opening night is an open mic night where everyone’s welcome to perform – all you have to do is contact Stacey by email on vocalsoulmate@hotmail.co.uk. The Rocket Dogs are enjoying a successful 2014 and make a main stage appearance on Wednesday night while Opaque return after a busy year touring the UK and take the stage on Thursday. They’re followed by Burning Codes the solo collaborative project of Belfast born singer and songwriter Paul Archer, who’s had extensive airplay on BBC national and local radio. You can’t get anything more local or different on Friday late afternoon than the return of The Palmerston Ukulele Band from that fine establishment down Oundle Road.

The Friday 7.30pm slot goes to the mod/psychedelic 5 piece band, Psych-O-Bombs. Headlining are the Reggae inspired dance grooves of the Rotten Hill Gang. Finally Saturday brings us Tom Wright and his band who’s influenced by such greats as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert Lee. The final headline act for 2014 on Saturday night are the Motor City Vipers who fully deserve this pride of place slot, not just because they’re local or because they’re a really dedicated soul band, the likes of which we haven’t seen in this area for many years. It’s because they give a quality performance AND clearly enjoy what they do. That’s infectious! Finally, many thanks to CAMRA and all the organisers who give up a lot of time prior to and during the Festival. Charities benefit, we all have a good time and Peterborough comes alive. Great job… thanks guys! Read more on www.espmag.co.uk

Fans of Matt Zilch will be pleased to hear the news that he’s holding a comeback gig at The Lord Burghley Stamford on August 24 Bank Holiday Sunday. It’ll be great to see this very popular musician and Matt told me – “It’s great to be back performing, and particularly in my hometown at The Lord Burghley.”

It’s my pleasure to say a huge congratulations to some talented local young musicians who’ve won a recent Battle of the Bands event. Over 1,000 bands entered the competition across the UK and Peterborough based indie-rock band, Albion, faced their greatest challenge to date at the National MMG (Majik Music Group) Battle of the Bands final and won. Albion, the youngest band in the competition, played in a battle against five of the best-unsigned bands from across the UK. The final was held at a sell-out show at The Camden Barfly in London. Albion consists of Harry Preen (vocals), Sam Harding (bass), Caleb Carver (drums), Richard Gledhill (rhythm guitar) and George Ramsay (lead guitar). Three of the boys are students at Bourne Academy and two are at Bourne Grammar. To get to the finals, the band undewent various rounds of competitive gigs to showcase their talent, including the East Midlands regional final at The Shed in Leicester. Spurred on by winning this stage, they recorded their debut EP These Are Holy Days at world famous Monnow

Valley Studios and they soon rocked into the top 100 new releases on the iTunes Chart. They received an array of prizes including a Marshall 'Haze' Valve Head with custom finish and a Natal Maple UK Snare Drum. “We have just got to say thanks to MMG, Marshall, Natal and of course to our loyal fans that made the trek to London,” says Harry Preen. “As it was an over 18's venue, we also want to thank many of our fans who couldn’t come and for their many messages of support throughout the night. It was a fantastic evening and hopefully the start of even bigger things to come.” After all their hard work the guys are taking a break in the lead up to their gig at the O2 Academy Islington on September 5. Albion’s EP called These Are Holy Days is available on iTunes. You can find out more about the lads on www.facebook.com/albionmusicuk and www.albionband.com.

It’s going to be an acoustic gig with maybe a surprise or two, Matt assures me it will be his usual slant on cover versions – “I’ll be doing some of the old material together with more current stuff that nobody’s heard me perform before so I hope they all like it.” He’s had a long rehearsal period for the new material and I wish him luck on Sunday August 24 and for the future.

There are some great bands on the bill at the Swiss Cottage in Woodston on Sunday August 10. They’re all attracted to the venue and the fact that the pub is again raising money for a great cause, namely Sue Ryder at Thorpe Hall. There's a BBQ and stalls, a raffle being held with some great prizes and the bands appearing during the day include Retrolux, Electric Warriors, Rocket Dogs, Be Bop A Lulas, Feckin’ Eejits, and The Collaborators. That's a strong line up for one day and the Swiss Cottage is expecting a good turn out. It gets under way from 1pm until late.

After the exertions of the Peterborough Beer Festival I can recommend a perfect way to chill out on Sunday August 24 at the Thorney Music Festival. This event each year immediately follows the Beer Festival and always includes some unique attractions in the way of music. This year it’s a reunion of a kind for Colin Smith, Paul Blant and Paul ‘Loop’ Allen who played together for years under a number of band names. They appear at this year’s Festival as The Wottingers. Presumably named after the tiny creatures on the BBC Childrens’ programme the Night Garden. I don’t know whether this is a one off appearance for the trio or if there will be more. Time will tell. I do know however that none of the said individuals can be described as tiny creatures! Also appearing for reggae fans are the very popular Tallawah, together with the powerful Children of the Revolution, and new wave/pop covers band Subway 77, who feature late 70’s to early 80’s music. Again something special comes from The Legacy – a young Long Sutton/Wisbech band featuring the amazing vocals of 12 year old Amy Palmer.

The Thorney Community Children’s Choir will be there singing pop covers and also The Peterborough Community Gospel Choir who I’ve seen a number of times render some classic soul/gospel songs. In between the electric acts Zakk Zoot Gray will be performing as a guitar soloist. I mentioned him earlier having been very impressed at his performance in July.

Organiser Andy Stuffins, who puts in a huge amount of time to bring this day to Thorney, told me – “As always I’m sure the acts assembled will provide a great day out for the family. There’s a licensed bar and hot food and drink, children’s inflatables and stalls.” And yet again charities and community initiatives benefit with all money raised split between The Brain Tumour Charity, Diabetes UK and Thorney Rugby Club. The Thorney Music Festival takes place on Sunday August 24 starting at 11.30am until dusk. It’s at the Bedford Hall in Station Road. For more info go to www.thorneylive.co.uk or phone Andy on 07801 024791.

Local music legend Gizz Butt is back from his 116 mile charity bike ride to the Download Festival having raised thousands for the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy, Child Line and Teenage Cancer Trust with the Heavy Metal Truants. Gizz told us – “Cycling from Alexandra Palace to Castle Donington was one of the greatest moments of my life. An experience like that never leaves you. It’s the mixture of great scenery, exhilaration, a wonderful bunch of lads, pushing yourself to the limit and the glass of beer at the end! And you can always put a pair of shorts over the lycra! Thanks to Bristows cycles and Woodston cycles for helping me get prepared.” Now for the first time ever he’s taking a short break in August from the local scene, but not a break from music… and not just to recover from the bike ride! His band The More I See are touring in the autumn so he’s preparing for that plus The English Dogs’ new album The Thing With Two Heads has just been released on Candlelight Records so he’s busy pushing that too. The album’s available from all the usual outlets so go grab a copy.
