OUR FOLK FOREVER FINDING FAME!

It’s so far been a summer of making positive headlines for some of our much-loved Peterborough celebrities and long may it continue.

The ladies were there in abundance to witness this occasion and so were officials from Vivacity and the city council. Mayor of Peterborough John Peach was on hand to help Louis unveil a bronze sculpture of his torso, which was commissioned by both agencies to mark Louis’s athletic success since the London 2012 Olympics.

episode of BBC daytime soap Doctors and we at ESP know Cassidy would have loved every minute of it especially as he’s done some stage acting in the past. Next stop James Bond Cassidy? In the meantime you can catch our military hero and dance champion at the Deepings Raft Race where he’ll be presenting prizes to those mad rafters!

Finally, the future looks bright for our young people if 21 year-old Kamal Hyman has anything to do with it. Our former youth MP and an Olympic torchbearer started his own business and has been crowned the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy’s National Entrepreneur of the Year.

It’s X-Factor time again and massive congratulations to Nicole Lawrence who got the magic four “yes’s” and made it through to Bootcamp. We all know Nicole is a fabulous talent and fingers crossed this time she can go all the way. And from deserving fame to finding fame, Nicky Downs from Morton near Bourne was selected to host an Ann Summers party for TOWIE star Jessica Wright who's the first ever celebrity face of Ann Summers swimwear. TOWIE fan Nicky’s held Ann Summers parties for four years (where’s my invite?) and she auditioned by sending in a video saying why she thought she should host this particular gathering for the TV star.

Another of our Strictly winners – Cassidy Little – was also enjoying his fame in front of a lens but this was of the TV camera kind. He appeared in an

irst, our very own Olympian and Strictly Come Dancing winner Louis Smith, who’s been getting behind several city projects of late, made a stop at Vivacity Premier Fitness in Hampton to show off his torso.

Thinking her video was a bit boring Nicky didn’t think she’d be selected but next thing you know she’s talking Jessica through products at a party with friends. Jessica made some purchases but her secret’s safe with us…

Kamal took the honours ahead of five finalists who all pitched their business ideas to Dragons’ Den’s Peter Jones and he was presented with a cheque for £5,000 by the man himself. He’s invested the prize money into his motivational speaking business, Aim a Little Higher, which sees Kamal delivering talks and workshops in schools, colleges and youth organisations across the country. I know Kamal has passion for inspiring young people and motivating them to make positive changes in their lives. He understands their issues and that’s what made him such an effective youth MP. In a society where sometimes young people aren’t taken as seriously as they should be and don’t always get the breaks they deserve it’s great to see Kamal championing for change and not being afraid to show off his natural entrepreneurial skills. The last young person to do that is the author of this column and hasn’t done too bad for himself...

WHOPPER EFFORT AT FOOTBALL FUNDAY I’m pleased to report more than £2,300 was raised at the Topham Todisco Football Funday as a direct result of ‘several’ burgers purchased and devoured by ‘footballer’ Tony Diiorio. Tony’s commitment to maintaining the size of his waistline meant the British Heart Foundation, Langtoft Football Club and the Langtoft Park Zipwire Fund have much needed extra money in their coffers. Tony: Ando and Brian would have been proud. MY WORD OF THE MONTH

CHOLESTEROL

I’m borderline high (family inheritance), so no more Ben & Jerry’s, sausage and egg McMuffin, cheese bakes, salami, pecan pie, chocolate éclairs, shortbread, hot dogs, strawberry milkshake, fresh cream scones, steak. The list goes on! Someone please kill me now.

DON ANTONIO IS BACK IN TOWN Godfather of Italian cuisine Antonio Carluccio will be making a welcome return to the city as special guest at this year’s Italian Festival and I’m looking forward to paying my respects. I’ve interviewed ‘Ando’ a couple of times and after each occasion I ended up calling my mum to tell her to get the pan on. His passion and knowledge of Italian culinary history is boundless and I could talk food porn with him all day. This year’s festival is shaping up to be the biggest yet with Carluccio’s mushroom stall taking centre stage and the main man himself on hand to help people with their purchases, whilst also signing copies of his latest book. This will be the seventh Italian Festival and I’m led to believe it’s the country’s most established in successive years. Expect to see me stuffing my face at the festival’s bakery then at numerous pizza, pasta and panini offerings and washing it down with homemade vino.

BRING YOUR RIDE TO THE PEACOCK It doesn’t matter what you’re riding, Peacock landlady Amanda Payne will welcome you to her Tuesday Bike Night every week throughout the year from 7pm until late.

bikes, people who enjoy the biker scene or people who want to learn more about bikes. The guys organise ride outs too and there’s information available on motorcycle maintenance, dealerships and clubs.

My Triumph was in for a service, so I swung by on the Vespa and she was obviously the star of the show!

More importantly the food’s good and it’s served until 10pm with meals costing only £3.99. There’s tea and coffee too and it wouldn’t be a proper bike meet without a brew.

I liked that the emphasis was on it being open to all riders, all bikes, people who like

SEE YOUR SELFIE AT ARTS FESTIVAL

On stage over the two-day event (September 12 and 13) will be traditional song and dance as well as solo performances and violinists. It’s the city’s most popular multi-cultural celebration and well done to the Italian Community Association and the city council for keeping it on the calendar every year.

SEE ANTHONY JOSHUA AT SOLSTICE Current WBC International Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua will be on the head table as special guest and speaker at the next boxing dinner organised by promoter Kevin Sanders. Tickets to see the 2012 Super Heavyweight Olympic gold medallist on September 24 at The Solstice can be reserved by calling Kevin on 07872 601467.

If you’ve taken a selfie you’re particularly proud of and want to share it with the rest of us then read on. This year’s Peterborough Arts Festival will be presenting ‘Enchanted City’ – a piece of artwork made up of 300 selfies that’ll be projected in the city centre and illuminate buildings and windows. For your chance to be part of this unique piece of art inspired by the work of Andy Warhol email your selfie for selection to peterboroughpresentsselfie@gmail.com Surely my superbly framed selfie taken in St Mark’s Square in Venice is a contender…

So readers, it appears summer has officially landed in the UK and what better way to enjoy some great flavours whilst basking in the sunshine. This month I bring you a fine selection of food news from organic farm food to cheeky Italian treats and all that can be lovingly enjoyed in the sun! Photos: Andy Vernum @ Studio One

THE RIVERFORD ORGANIC FARM WALK AND PICNIC!

BEAR’S GRILL, FOOD WITH SOUL! The Riverford organic farm based just outside Peterborough is holding a series of interesting farm walks throughout the summer which means you get to learn all about the yummy food you eat, and the best bit? You get to try it too!

We caught up with James Negus from Riverford’s local farm who told us: “Our lovely organic farm is a hive of activity over the summer months as we plant crops, pick fruit, and sow seeds, so there’s lots to see, touch and taste.”

The next two events will be held on Wednesday August 26 between 5pm and 7.30pm and Wednesday September 30. Tickets are just £6 for this fab foodie adventure which includes a stroll around the farm followed by a delicious Riverford Farm picnic of pies, soups and salads!

The walk isn’t too far, an hour or so stroll, but there won’t be any transport along the route, so before booking make sure any children coming can complete the walk. It’s also advisable to wear wellies and wrap up just in case! To find out more call 01803 762059 or email events@riverford.co.uk

BREAKFAST AT BILL’S!

All great ideas have to start somewhere and Bear’s Grill is a fantastic local venture that was inspired by one man’s trip to the USA. Martin Andrews was so inspired by the Texan BBQ when travelling in the states that when he returned to the UK, he wanted to share his wealth of knowledge about this soulful food and so Bear’s Grill was born. All their meat is British, locally sourced where possible and is cooked in a low ‘n’ slow mesquite wood using their own unique rub. This ensures the meat stays beautifully moist and soaks in all the flavour which is served with homemade fresh coleslaw. Lucky food fans can enjoy delights such as Louisiana pulled pork, Texas brisket, Chicago style kielbasa (smoked sausage), homemade 100% beef burgers, mac ‘n’ cheese and a variety of slaws which I have to say, taste absolutely delicious! Bear’s Grill is available for private catering for parties, functions, corporate events and even weddings. Bespoke menus can be arranged and to see their full menu visit www.bearsgrill.net.

FALL IN LOVE WITH ITALIAN FOOD IN CATHEDRAL SQUARE

It turns out that Bill’s Restaurant isn’t just the ‘in place’ to visit for lunch and dinner; it’s also the place to be for breakfast too! Breakfast at Bill’s is served Monday to Friday 8am until 12noon and Saturday and Sundays from 8am until 1pm. With free WiFi, it’s the perfect place for a business catch up or to simply enjoy some cool American style café culture in Peterborough. Bill’s know a thing or two about what

20

www.espmag.co.uk

works and what doesn’t and their breakfast menu reflects this with plenty of choice. Be it a full on cooked Bill’s Breakfast with all the trimmings, a vegetarian option for non-meat eaters, pancakes with delicious toppings, mini croissants or eggs benedict, there’s something tasty for everyone to kick-start their day with. For a look at the full menu visit www.billswebsite.co.uk

Now if there’s one thing us Italians know, and know well, it’s food, and you can rest assured there’ll be plenty to get your taste buds singing at this year’s festival. Taking place on September 12 and 13 in Cathedral Square, you can look forward to some culinary delights in the shape of a rich and colourful Italian market and authentic bakery selling all the wonderful flavours you’d expect with the romantic food of Italy along with other trade stalls selling pizza, pasta, ice-cream and what Italian festival would be complete without a red wine making demo? Enjoy!

It’s that time of year again when Peterborough embraces the red, green and white flag and Peterborough city centre becomes a Mediterranean dream in the shape of our very own Italian Festival.

Ella Eyre is Feline fine… A

nd sounding damn fine too! We’ve loved this girl with the big voice and the big hair ever since she first crashed into the music scene and we were among the first to feature her on our front cover. Finally after a collection of impressive singles Ella Eyre is bringing us her debut album this month. Her new single Good Times is released on August 14 and her much anticipated debut album Feline is out on August 21 and we can’t wait! The Brit winning singer-songwriter has her third headline UK tour coming up in November and has enjoyed a packed summer of festival appearances – she rocked Glastonbury! She’s also followed in the footsteps of Beyoncé becoming the face of Emporio Armani Diamond’s Perfume in a global ad campaign, so it’s safe to say this Londoner is going places. She was tipped for the top right from the start when she blasted onto the music scene with a number 1 feature on Rudimental’s Waiting All Night and hasn’t looked back since.

“I’ve always wanted to hit people in the face with my music, rather than tickle them,” says Ella. Her powerful vocals certainly hit you and now at last it’s time for us to hear the full collection of her tunes. “I’ve always been into punchy, loud songs – passionate, with a message. And I’ve always been really lyrical – I love the idea that someone has felt the same as me. I love honesty, brutality and rawness.” She may have been born on April Fools Day to a Rastafari father and a knitwear designer mother, but she’s one smart cookie and music was always the driving force in her life and the path she knew she would follow. A dancer from the age of two and a drummer at school, she was singing backing vocals in a band when she was 14. She started writing songs and quickly found what she was looking for. After her music teacher tipped off some music execs about her powerhouse sound it was no surprise she was quickly signed up and the journey began.

We’ve loved her singles and now the full collection of her powerful material is released on her debut album Feline. It’s the musings, thoughts and feelings of a young woman living and loving life, even when the going gets tough! It’s vibrant, it’s boisterous, it’s confident and it’s full of sharp songwriting and superlative choruses. “It’s about the relationship between me and the world,” says Ella. “Everyone has their everyday battles, and Feline is about how we deal with them.” Since making her name as one of the UK’s most captivating debut female singers, Ella has gone on to travel the world, signed record and publishing deals, fallen in – and out – of love, scored a number of hits, both of her own and as a writer for other artists, become a much in-demand figure within the fashion world and generally navigated the highs – and lows – of the record industry, love and life itself.

She’s searched the experiences she’s had because – “I want to affect people. Make them happy, sad, ultimately empower them by the end of listening to the album and making them strong. Almost as if someone has been listening to you, but really you’ve been listening.” Ella’s learnt from the dance tracks she’s featured on, infusing bold brass and modern soul with hooks and truth. She wanted the album to be big and that’s exactly what we’ve got. “I wanted it very raw, big, beefy, hard-hitting and up-lifting. It started off being just cool sounding, laid back, but in the back of my mind I knew I wanted the songs to make an impact – hook, brass section and vocal. Cool but with ambition!” www.ellaeyre.com

Ella has poured all these experiences, good and bad, into Feline – a remarkably honest album from someone who’s only 21 years-old.

Cast: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Josh Gad & Peter Dinklage Director: Chris Columbus

After an eye-catching trailer that took us thirtyand-forty-somethings back to our childhood when you dropped ten pence (or a quarter in American terms) into that arcade slot machine to tackle Pac-Man or Donkey Kong – this actioncomedy looks like it could tap into those special moments. At the time of writing, the early reviews for this part-animated movie, starring four buddies – Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Josh Gad and Peter Dinklage – who were early 80s arcade enthusiasts, haven’t been that glowing.

But anything that sees old arcade heroes invade Earth – after aliens picked up video game feeds in outer space and misinterpreted them as a declaration of war – has still got to be well worth a look. An evil Pac-Man? Still gonna watch it. Director Chris Columbus may not have had a hit since Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – and main star Sandler is similarly in need of career revitalisation – but this may just benefit from steering well clear of Inside Out and Minions in the summer calendar.

TRAINWRECK

THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.

PAPER TOWNS

The latest comedic sensation from America, Amy Schumer, headlines her first movie from comedy aficionado (Knocked Up director and Bridesmaids producer) Judd Apatow. Having thought that monogamy was never possible, a commitment-phobic partying-to-the-early-hours career woman (Schumer) may have to face her fears when she meets a good guy (Bill Hader). LeBron James, John Cena and Tilda Swinton co-star.

Guy Ritchie’s (Sherlock Holmes) film remake of the much-loved sixties series, which is actually set in the same era, sees new Superman, Henry Cavill, take on the role of CIA agent Napoleon Solo, in collaboration with KGB operative Illya Kuryakin (Lone Ranger’s Armie Hammer), to take out a mysterious organisation trying to acquire nuclear weapons. Ex Machina’s breakout star Alicia Vikander and Hugh Grant co-star.

British ex-Victoria’s Secret model-turned-actress Cara Delevingne (aka the ‘girl with those eyebrows’) headlines this coming-of-age drama adapted from The Fault in Our Stars’ author John Green’s best-selling novel. The story actually centres around nerdy Quentin (Nat Wolff), who embarks on a road trip with pals, to find the missing girl (and childhood crush) next door (Delevingne), who has left cryptic clues to her whereabouts.

17

VACATION This remake of the cult 1983 comedy National Lampoon’s Vacation (which actually cameos Chevy Chase) stars Ed Helms (The Hangover) as a grown-up Rusty Griswold, who wants to emulate his childhood vacation with his wife (Christina Applegate) and his two sons. Early buzz for this is pretty good, if not just for some great comedic set-pieces, but a now infamous Chris Hemsworth – and his enormous ‘package’ – scene.

BatMan: arKHaM KniGHt (PS4/X1/PC)

If Arkham Asylum was Batman Begins, Arkham City the Dark Knight – then Arkham Knight is the Dark Knight Rises. That’s because, just like the last film in the Christopher Nolan universe (which is pound-for-pound my favourite), developer Rocksteady’s final instalment in their gaming trilogy is more epic and grander in scale than the two games before it – with just a few minor niggles that prevent it from absolute greatness – that provides us with a truly grandiose ending to a sensational franchise.

#####

Fortunately said niggles – basically the overuse of Batmobile puzzling elements and some slightly underwhelming story plotlines – are so small it can’t detract from the luscious visuals, breathtaking combat, great voiceacting (Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill), jaw-dropping (and far more active) open world arena, and the aforementioned Batmobile being a glorious addition for the most part. So if this is the last time the Caped Crusader takes flight over Gotham in a standalone game – maybe a massive DC Comics’ superhero collaboration could be next Rocksteady? – then he disappears into the night by bringing finite justice to one of gaming’s greatest ever series.

rorY MciLroY PGa tour (X1/PS4)

The World No 1 player missed The Open as he couldn’t walk on his own two feet – and this updated version similarly needs to walk before it can run. It’s sad that the first time the UK’s best player gets his name on top of EA’s famous PGA golfing game – taking over from Tiger Woods – it’s attached to this ‘bare bones’ overhaul, which astonishingly has a dramatically culled roster and lack of officially licensed courses.

##

Boasting the Battlefield Frostbite 3 game engine, the general gameplay mechanics are decent (including customisable control set-up), with impressive graphics, noteworthy mini-games and better loading times, but with so many of the other fundamentals severely lacking (particularly the career mode) – this just feels rushed, unfinished and full of holes.

Established in 1890, e Rose & Crown at orney is a true country pub

If they can get all the features back for the next outing they’ve got a chance to make par, or even a birdie – but McIlroy regrettably scores a bogey on his first outing.

Set in a beautiful location we boast superb home cooked food, a huge selection of drinks and a truly warm welcome for all the family. If you prefer a little peace and quiet or somewhere for the kids to run around, we offer a spacious beer garden and patio area for you to enjoy the fresh air and stunning views.

f1 2015 (PS4/X1/PC)

Formula One is another officially licensed game that is on a practice lap (see above) after sporting a new gaming engine. After a gap year for the franchise, this has been built from the ground up, and is a better all round experience, with the new version providing enhanced visuals and handling, that makes it one of the best versions of F1 to drive. But sadly, much like with EA’s PGA game, the lack of content and features – with modes cleverly trying to mask over that fact – it takes some of the shine off the solid foundations that have been laid for Lewis Hamilton and cohorts, and sometimes simply feels like a glorified tech demo.

###

So the basics are right, but the game needs some serious bodywork to bring it into line with past offerings to take it convincingly past the chequered flag.

MotoGP 15 (PS4/X1/PS3/360/PC)

The new MotoGP game offers solidly competent officially licensed fare – but with only incremental changes to last year’s version. There are minor enhancements in the form of graphics, computer AI and track, rider and weather effects – but this biking game really isn’t a giant leap from last year for Valentino Rossi and co. Sadly the game is crying out for a next-gen engine – particularly with this version having ‘freezing’ issues after some races (which should be getting a patch) – to move the license forward and advance the series.

Despite my love for the fast and the furious of the car world I do have a real soft spot for ‘Moggie’ Minors so it was a pleasure to hear all about James Dyer’s pride and joy. Why is it your pride and joy?

Nicknamed Mike Mike (so good he named it twice!) his is a 1967 two door Morris Minor 1000. James bought the car in 2008 when he was looking for a car to drive to Mongolia (more about that later) and picked a Morris Minor, partly because it would be easy to fix if it went wrong and because he’s always loved old/unusual cars.

www.espmag.co.uk

“Quite simply, we’ve been through so much together: in the summer of 2009 I drove Mike Mike from Oxford to Ulan Battar in Mongolia as part of a charity rally – a journey of over 10,000 miles in six weeks. I raised a substantial amount towards two charities operating in one of the poorest, and certainly the coldest capital city on earth. Many cars take part in the event each year but only a handful makes it back! The fact that Mike Mike is back in this country and still on the road (and still covered in stickers) is pretty much unique. For this reason, it’s my pride and joy. Morris Minors always make people smile, but mine is super special as it’s been on such an adventure.” Would you ever part with it? “There is no way I would ever sell it! It's part of me and it's part of my story! It's a joy to drive (the

MASSIVE steering wheel still makes me smile) and it's actually quite perky on the road. Although the 1.1 litre engine is tiny, the car is really, really light; so it gets off the line surprisingly quickly. Whilst he's looking a bit shabby at the moment (the Gobi Desert has sandblasted the paintwork rather), I have promised him a new paint job in time for his 50th birthday in 2017!” Does it attract attention? “Yes! ‘Moggies’ are a really attractive shape – lots of sweeping curves. There really aren't many cars from the '60s on the road any longer, so that attracts attention alone.” Your rally adventure sounds like a Top Gear special! “Well, highlights include crossing the Caspian Sea from Azerbajan to Turkmenistan on a train ferry (Mike Mike and two other cars parked in the

What’s it like to drive and does it take much to look after? “Well, its top speed in 1967 was 76mph, so he's not quick. He's also quite noisy to drive, especially when driving much above 45mph. The four speed gearbox is excellent, but I do find myself reaching for 5th from time to time. Front engined, rear wheel drive means that it handles like a sports car... especially when tackling wet roundabouts at 20mph – because of the super skinny tyres, it's very easy to kick the tail out, which is a lot of fun! “Built in the days before computer diagnostics, it's amazingly easy to look after and maintain – they've been talked about as a 'Fisher Price, my first classic car'!”

We’re midway through the summer local classic car show schedule and I’ve already seen some beautiful and rare examples of cars so good I’m considering part exchanging my girlfriend for one. The classic car scene is growing and values are climbing. Young people are also taking an interest, as classic car ownership is often cheaper (parts and insurance) than your conventional Clio. The fact that Harry Styles has several classics of his own has also sparked an interest from the next generation of would be owners. So, the next event I plan to drool at is the Maxey Classic Car Show (August 15) followed by Easton On The Hill Classic Car, Motorcycle & Scooter Show (August 29) and Stamford Car Show (August 30). Then on September 5 and 6 it’s the second Peterborough City Council Classic and Vintage Vehicle Show, which is held on the Embankment. Places for this event are still open (register on the council’s website) and it’s on track to bring in around 400 vehicles over the weekend. This show has the potential to be the biggest in East Anglia and was a cracker last year.

“When we broke down in Turkmenistan I had the delight of sitting at the wheel being towed for over 80 miles until we came across a garage. It turns out that the mechanics of a ’60 Morris Minor is similar to that of a '90’s Lada. Ten minutes later, a team of mechanics had got the car running again using nothing but the starter handle and a screwdriver! Soon we were back on the road, but so behind schedule that we had to drive all night on dreadful roads to ensure we arrived at the boarder with Uzbekistan before our visa expired!”

AND JET LAG We all need our beauty sleep and getting away from it all needn't mean sleepless nights thanks to jet lag busting tips from The Sleep Council. The day before you fly, make sure you eat three balanced meals, including at least five servings of fruit or green vegetables and one of protein rich food such as white fish or tofu. Drink plenty of water and once on the plane, set your watch to local time at your destination. Once you get there help control your wakefulness by eating high protein meals to increase your alertness. www.sleepcouncil.org.uk

Schools out and if the sun’s out the kids will be out so stay sun safe with these tips from NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)… • Apply a sunscreen, which protects against harmful UVA and UVB rays. A sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 50 gives the best protection. Re-apply sunscreen every couple of hours. • Cover exposed parts of a child's skin with sunscreen on cloudy or overcast days. Don't forget to apply it to shoulders, nose, chest, ears, cheeks and the tops of feet.

When it comes to hair Melanie Richard’s Hair Boutique tell us their must-pack item is the Kodo bobble that leaves no marks or lines in your hair when tying your hair up in the heat. Pain free, snag free, headache free – we like it! Fun in the sun is great but just like your skin hair needs protection so Mel recommends the Wella Sun hair care range including shampoo for hair and body to remove chlorine and salt after sun exposure followed by the conditioner to moisturise those ends and not forgetting the UV sun protection cream or spray to protect your hair during the day. Over at Bella Mia in Stanground, salon owner Laura won’t be sunning herself without packing a Moroccan Oil travel kit (£31.85) – a cute snakeskin travel bag packed with mini shampoo, conditioner, mask and Moroccan Oil, or one of their their home and away kits in a box (£36). “These don’t only smell absolutely lovely,” Laura told me,“they’re great for the condition of your hair and really protect and hydrate in the sun, plus you can use the oil as a body moisturiser too.”

• Cover children up in loose, baggy cotton clothes, such as an oversized t-shirt with sleeves, or a cool longsleeve shirt and a floppy hat with a wide brim. • Protect children's eyes with sunglasses that meet the British Standard (BSEN 1836:2005) and carry the CE mark (check the label or ask the manufacturer). • If children are swimming, use a waterproof sunblock and re-apply after towelling, or as often as it says on the bottle. For more info about keeping safe in the sun visit www.nhs.uk/sun

Mary at My Body Essentials says she won’t be leaving home without a Factor 50 SPF face cream – “The Image Skin Care range we stock is a cosmeceutical strength product so has to be dispensed by a professional – it’s great because it gives maximum protection against the sun’s rays to prevent damage and ageing plus it’s a fantastic moisturiser. There’s even a tinted one for a hint of colour.”

DON’T LET STRESS WEIGH YOU DOWN – LET GO AND LIGHTEN THE LOAD! I have read this piece many times but have never discovered its origins, however it’s something that I share with my clients and in workshops that I give so I wanted to share it here with you (if anyone does know the origin I would love to know). A professor of psychology is talking with a group of his students about the effects of stress on the body and how to manage it. When beginning his lecture he took a glass of water and showed it to the students who expected him to ask if the glass was half full or half empty as part of his lesson. Instead he asked, “how heavy is this glass of water?” As the students called out various answers from 6-10 oz he continued to brush them off as they kept guessing. He replied – “The actual weight doesn’t matter, what really matters is how long I’ve been holding it. If I hold it for just a minute it feels very light, if I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my arm. “If I hold it for a whole day, my arm will feel numb and paralysed. Any longer than that and I will be very tempted to give up and drop it, in each case the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.” The students were blown away by the simplicity yet the profound truth of this lesson. However, the professor continued, “The stresses and worries in life are like this glass of water. Carry them for only a short while and they’re manageable. Worry about them a bit longer and they begin to hurt. And if we think about them all day long, or longer, we can begin to feel paralysed and hopeless – incapable of concentrating or focusing on anything else.” He reminded his students, “It’s important to remember to let go of your stresses whenever possible. As early in the evening as you can, put

all your burdens down. Don’t carry them through the evening and into the night.”

When you are in a constant state of ‘fight or flight’ you are not in harmony or in balance.

This quote speaks to so many, it is not saying we can live a life without some stresses but what it is saying is ‘deal’ with it. Discharge it where possible and allow the body to ‘recover’ where there have been a series of stressful events.

I read these quotes and wanted to share them with you –

As I have written before in my column, unmanaged stress has an impact on our physical, mental and emotional state, it can underpin so many symptoms that we do not connect to the interruption and function of other systems such as digestion, hormonal, muscular, neurological etc. It also robs our creativity, motivation and nips off our life stream. Our current lifestyle may not support our vitality due to toxins, denatured foods, stimulation from sugars, fizzy drinks, alcohol, caffeine, supplements (yes even some of these can stimulate and interfere rather than support), excessive exercise, late nights, competitiveness, drugs etc. We are also bombarded by and keep ourselves wired into a grid of outside stimulation from TV, mobile phones, internet, social media, mindless shopping, keeping ourselves over occupied… and on it goes.

1. Accept some days you are the pigeon and some days the statue. 2. Keep your words sweet as someday you may just have to eat them. 3. Since it’s the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, it’s ok to sleep later now and again. 4. The second mouse gets the cheese. 5. Nobody cares if you can’t dance – just get up and dance. 6. A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on the detour. “Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness.” (unknown) When letting go is better than holding on. In health, Karen www.karendevine.co.uk

BILL BAILEY BRINGS ARENA COMEDY TO PETERBOROUGH

The big comedy news this month is that Peterborough Arena have announced that Bill Bailey is bringing his 2016 tour Limboland to Peterborough on Saturday June 4, 2016! This will be the first major comedy show the arena has put on and with a 5,000 seat capacity it'll be the biggest live comedy show staged at a venue in the city.

theatres and arenas on their tours often bypass us, so the Peterborough Arena hosting Bill Bailey is an exciting step forward for entertainment in the city. So basically what I'm saying is buy a ticket and let's get this gig packed out!

The popularity and demand for live comedy over the past decade has seen some of the UK's best and most popular comedians visit Peterborough to perform but up until now we've lacked an indoor venue capable of holding a comedy show for more than 1,000 people. This has meant comedians who play bigger

Now, I know some of you reading this will be thinking "But it's not until next year – I've got ages to get a ticket!" Trust me this gig will sell out quickly, so get your tickets NOW. I mean who doesn't like Bill Bailey?! The guy's a comedy genius, and I take my hat off to the Peterborough Arena team for securing a comedian of his calibre. Limboland is a brand new live show from Bill Bailey which

sees him explore the gap between how we imagine our lives to be and how they really are as he rails against a world that doesn't match up to our expectations and contemplates the true nature of happiness. Plus he'll do some songs – he always does songs and they're always one of the highlights of the show. I'm also reliably informed that if this gets the support it deserves, it won't be the last big name comedian to bring their UK tour to the venue. So get booking and watch this space!

EDINBURGH FRINGE FAVES ON THEIR WAY During August, the best names in comedy descend en masse to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It's the comedy equivalent of Glastonbury (except it takes place in one of the world's best cities, rather than in the field of some bearded hippy farmer). The good news for us locally, is that a number of comics who are up there at the moment will be visiting us shortly and there are a few other names you'll recognise in the coming months. THE CRESSET Al Murray – 24th Sept Henning Wehn – 11th Oct Milton Jones – 4th Nov THE KEY Doc Brown – 10th Sept Rob Beckett – 27th Sept Jimeoin – 16th Oct Chris Ramsey – 1st Nov James Acaster – 16th Nov

THE LAST LAUGH Finally, the last ever episode of Top Gear with Clarkson, Hammond & May was shown recently. If you'd been wondering what Richard Hammond and James May had been up to since Clarkson was suspended in April, judging from the opening few minutes Hammond's been growing a David Brent style goatee as his mid-life crisis continues and James May has made himself a jacket out of an old quilted duvet. Still it could be worse, at least they didn't borrow Jacko from Brush Strokes' decorating overalls like Kanye West wore for Glastonbury.

THE POSH PAGE ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

Dave Robertson, Peterborough United Manager

Like many teenagers across the city, I had dreams of making it as a professional footballer and like many teenagers that dream for me was not realised. Some fail because of a lack of drive and some, like in my case, fail because of lack of talent (technically there are far more reasons than that, however, it makes me sound like I was close by listing just one stumbling block), but there’s nothing more satisfying for a Peterborough United supporter than seeing ‘one of their own’ come through the ranks.

how an Academy system can be the perfect grounding for first team football. Only this summer, chairman Darragh MacAnthony handed full-time contracts to four Academy graduates in Jack Friend, Jonny Edwards, Harry Anderson and Tobi Adebayo-Rowling and boss Dave Robertson knows just how vital a thriving Academy can be – prior to taking over the first team reins he was in charge of the Posh youth system.

Joe Newell The mandate for Youth Academies across the country is to produce players, develop them and hone them into first team players. In an era when English football is under the spotlight more than ever thanks to our recent failures at major tournaments, the challenge of bringing through more English talent is at a critical stage. At Peterborough United, we have a strong history of developing players. Matthew Etherington, Simon Davies, Adam Drury, Luke Steele and Joe Newell are just a few examples of

44

www.espmag.co.uk

“The youth Academies are very important to football clubs up and down the country for a number of reasons,” Robertson told me. “The first thing is obviously the production line of local talented players. It gives a great sense of achievement to a football club when they produce someone who has been with them for many years and is a locallynurtured talent and they make their first team debut. “As an Academy manager, it’s a very proud moment. When young players make their first team debut and perform well, it’s the culmination of a journey. You have seen them progress and develop, not just on the football pitch, but as men. There is no better feeling than seeing those players score their first

goal because you know how much confidence it gives them in their own ability.

Some players who were tipped for the top as teenagers go missing and that’s often because the closer they get to breaking into the first team,

“...I want to give young players a chance...” “The Academy at Peterborough United is very important, to me, to the board of directors and chairman and also to the supporters. As manager of the football club, I want to give young players a chance in the first team and I think everybody has seen that. Football is a changing world, the introduction of the Financial Fair Play ruling does try and encourage clubs to produce their own and invest in the future and that has to be good for the game in this country long-term,” Robertson said. However, while bringing youth team players into the first team group is a perfect scenario, particularly in the Football League, at Premier League level, players can get lost in the system. With up to 50, and in some cases more first team players on the books at the top clubs, just obtaining an opportunity to impress is a challenge.

their club opens their chequebook and splashes the cash on a star, often a foreign import. The Football Association is trying hard to improve that pathway from Academy football to first team football. Chairman Greg Dyke outlined proposals in March to restrict the number of non-EU players and also revealed plans to toughen the rules on home-grown talent in the latest proposals from its commission, which was set up in 2013 to improve the England team. It would take at least six more pages in this issue of ESP to tackle the club v country row that the above paragraph would ignite, but as Liverpool and Manchester City pay top dollar for English talent in Raheem Sterling, Fabian Delph, James Milner and Danny Ings, one hopes they are doing it to improve their starting line-ups rather than fulfil the English quota in their squads.

The Solstice in Peterborough is pulling out all the stops this summer and it’s easy to see why this fantastic venue is such a big hit with nighttime city revelers. So ESP thought it would be good to catch up with resident Solstice DJ Steve Andrews to chat about his night, the 90s and the Terrace Session Ibiza Reunion party with Alex P and Brandon Block. Steve knows a thing or two about putting on a good night, of course he does, he was doing his thing back in the 90s when Peterborough had an abundance of independent bars treating music fans to some quality tunes, so it’s no surprise that his night, the Terrace

So what can we expect on Saturday August 8? Steve explains: “The lads will be playing some classic anthems along with many Ibiza tunes from the 2015 season. Myself and Darren James will warm up with some classics too so all in all it looks set to be a big night!” The city’s become a great spot for music acts and Steve’s own Saturday night residency at the Solstice draws in the crowds where he plays his usual sounds of deep, funky and soulful house. “I’ve been playing in Peterborough for 15 years at various places such as Westside Bar and ran a night called Bubble which was one of the region’s biggest dance parties. The Solstice is a great venue for me to be a resident as I love the crowd and The Solgarden there works so well as it’s quirky and has a great outdoor area which attracts an older crowd who want decent music, but can still enjoy a good conversation, have a drink, a chat and a dance if they want to.” So what are you waiting for? Dust off your raving shoes and get ready for a jam packed August at the Solstice. Anna Ruggiero

MIXOLOGY WAREHOUSE IS COMING! It was about time ESP caught up with Dan Clare, co-organiser of Mixology, DJ, producer and now one of the organisers of an epic music event to hit Peterborough, Mixology Warehouse, described in their words as ‘12 hours, 24 DJs and 2000 people!’ Mixology Warehouse on September 5 at Peterborough Arena looks set to impress house music fans for more than one reason. It’s one Darius Syrossian of the biggest dance events to grace Peterborough and for me, it’s going to be great to see music legends, including Darius Syrossian and Route 94, playing alongside home grown talent. So I caught up with Dan about DJing (obviously), producing tracks, vinyl versus controllers and why Peterborough house heads should be excited, very excited about Mixology Warehouse. Anna Ruggiero

During your career you’ve played alongside some of the greats, who’s been your favourite?

signed and organising events such as Mixology Warehouse are a great stepping stone for future projects.

If you had a musical magic wand, who would you most like to DJ with?

“That’s a tough one, there have been lots but I would say Danny Daze at Mixology was amazing, dropping tunes from Madonna which the crowd loved.”

“This is also going to be a great opportunity for local DJs and nights such as House Proud and Tech Noir to get together and smash it on the terrace so this is extra special – local DJs playing alongside legends such as Darius Syrossian.”

“It would have to be one of the legends such as Luciono, Seth Troxler or Jamie Jones!”

Okay so now on to Mixology Warehouse - THE house event of the year! Photos: Mitch Brewster

Is it the biggest event you’ve played at and how much work goes into organising a 12 hour party like this? “Yes it’s the biggest event I’ve played at and I can’t wait! Anna: How did it all start for you on the music scene? Dan: “I started playing drum and base on vinyl as a bedroom DJ many years ago and then things rally started to take off for me when two disco tracks I remixed got signed by Hed Kandi when I was just 21. “I also studied a degree in sound engineering which taught me the technical side of music such as how to record in a studio.” You have an army of fans on social media and a big following, what do you think makes a good DJ? “For me, I always have the best nights when the DJ is really enjoying themselves and gives a good show to fans, this gets the crowd going. But it’s a personal thing.”

“There’s been a tremendous amount of work gone into the event; the first meeting to discuss it took place last November! “Peterborough Arena has been massively supportive and it’s great to see them pushing more music events in the city. The Red Room at Edwards almost seems like it was made for Mixology and we’re hoping Mixology Warehouse will be just as memorable and the start of great warehouse nights in the city.” So are you happy where you are now in terms of your music and what does the Mixology Warehouse event mean to you? “I’m progressing really well music wise. I’m happy to be playing alongside top DJs, getting my music

Tell me about the interest in the event so far? “The first four releases have sold out and we’ve sold over 1,000 tickets. The venue holds 2,000 so we’re on the right track!” Who are you most excited to see play at the event? “Honestly, I’m really excited about everyone’s sets but I have seen Darius play a few times in the past year and every time he’s absolutely smashed it. I also think the way that we’ve scheduled the DJ sets, the night will flow perfectly.”

Controller Vs Vinyl? “We’re in a new age of software now and although I learnt on vinyl and got the respect for that, I don’t think using controllers is a bad thing. It’s just an easier way to do it but still gives the crowd a great night of music either way!” What are your thoughts on the music scene in Peterborough at the moment? “The music scene in Peterborough is doing really well and it’s getting even better for music fans, as Mixology join forces with nights such as Tech Noir which reassures us we must be doing something right!” I hear you also play under an alias, tell me more! “I have collaborated with Dylan May to form Maur and our debut EP, Dossa has been signed by the legendary Will Bailey which is massively exciting, and had support across the BBC Radio 6 Music, Capital, Kiss etc. It’s climbing high in the Beatport Charts and there is a real buzz around the track so watch this space.” www.mixologywarehouse.co.uk

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…

Keith says…

THORNEY GOES LIVE!

Festival season is well and truly upon us and the end of August sees two of the biggest in the area with huge entertainment for local live music fans. The Peterborough Beer Festival and Thorney Live Music Festival are run by local volunteers and unlike the on/off Willow Festival, both have become regular fixtures in our social calendar. Both of these are covered in this month’s column. I paid a few visits to The Ploughman’s Beer Festival where live music and pub roof walking were highlights of the weekend from Hookers’ Trev and Nuggets’ Karl. Great local event.

BREWS AND TUNES This month sees the 20th anniversary of Thorney Live Charity Music Festival. This event each year immediately follows the Peterborough Beer Festival and always includes some unique attractions in the way of music. Once again the Embankment is the scene of the Peterborough Beer Festival and it’s pleasing to see the music lined up by the organisers contains a high number of local bands who are guaranteed to entertain during the five day period from August 25 to August 29. The opening Tuesday night is the popular open mic night and Wednesday sees a long awaited appearance at the Festival as the ever popular Grumpy Old Men take the stage, whilst Thursday features two really contrasting music styles. Firstly, The Stringlers, who are making a big name for themselves in the area. They’re an all-female string quartet who give a classical approach to some rock classics like Stairway to Heaven and Bohemian Rhapsody. They’re followed by the raw energy of punk/new wave covers band The Expletives who thrive on plenty of crowd interaction. If you can get off work early Friday afternoon, then I recommend The Palmerston Ukelele Band (PUB) who started down Oundle Road and have now become a regular fixture at The Beer Festival. So for the third year they occupy the late afternoon 4pm slot on Friday. The evening is occupied firstly by Dizzy Miss Lizzys. Led by Peterborough’s own guitar virtuoso, Gizz Butt, these will bring you some great rock ‘n’ roll which will have you

singing along if not dancing. As their name indicates you can expect a good smattering of Beatle’s classics during their set. Friday finishes with The Activators. This ten piece band from Lincoln, whose eclectic style includes ska, reggae, celtic and world genres, is renowned for its chaotic and highly energetic shows. The Activators arrive in Peterborough from an appearance at Glastonbury and also at Nambucca in Islington. The band has also played at the Isle of Wight and at French, Icelandic and Italian festivals. Last year, Tin Pigeons earned rave reviews at the Festival with their very popular indie folk. So the organisers have signed them up for the Saturday 7.30pm slot at this year’s event. They revel in the festival atmosphere and have been very busy this summer. Finally, one of Peterborough’s own headlines Saturday. The Replicas have had a two year break and recently reformed so it’s appropriate that they get the closing gig for The Peterborough Beer Festival 2015. Expect plenty of mod/ska and northern soul classics from the band. Once again, I want to congratulate CAMRA and all the organisers on the high standard of the whole event. Some people couldn’t organise the proverbial in a brewery but these guys can. And my thanks to them all.

The stage performances start at 12.30 when DB5 open the proceedings with their rock covers, and these are followed by Sub Zero who’ll stretch back from today to the 60’s for their wide playlist. Then a band who I’ve heard being heralded more and more these days – The Soul Runners. This eight piece band feature three girl singers and will bring some Motown and classic soul to the festival. Two tribute acts are on the bill. First a tribute to The Beautiful South and The Housemartins from Paul Heaton Fan Club and then Robbie Williams Banned will feature his solo music and in addition, some Take That. The wide variety continues with 70’s new wave and punk cover band Forty Fiver. Finally, the Dizzy Miss Lizzys will be playing their nostalgic set of Beatles classics as well as some great rock ‘n’ roll standards. They feature the irrepressible former Prodgidy guitarist, Gizz Butt on lead guitar. A great extra touch is that Steve Bean will play classical guitar sets in between each of the performances. Over the last nineteen years the festival’s seen more than 130 bands and artists on stage, each bringing their own unique blend of musical entertainment. And they’ve raised over £50,000 for local and national charities ranging from the local playgroup through to the national Macmillan Cancer Relief Fund So many volunteers and local companies help make this festival possible, but the person with the most influence over the festival is Andy Stuffins, who came up with the original idea and has continued, with the support of his family to make the event one of the leading music festivals in the area. Andy told me – “We’re all really excited about this year’s line up because the whole day brings a wide range of music with something for everyone. In particular I’ve been very lucky to squeeze in an appearance by Matt Byrne in Robbie Williams Banned as he is literally visiting Thorney en route to Gatwick to play a huge festival in Ibiza on Bank Holiday Monday!” The Thorney Music Festival takes place on Sunday August 30 starting at 11.30am until dusk. It’s in the grounds of the Bedford Hall in Station Road. For more information go to: www.thorneylive.co.uk or phone Andy on 07801 024791.

HYPNO-SLIMMING Amazing new easy way to lose weight • • • • • • •

I have seen Tom Wright perform a couple of times recently and each time was so impressed with the vitality of his on-stage performance in addition to his singing and musicianship. Tom is a country-rock singer/songwriter who, for the talent he shows, is still amazingly only 20 years-old and has just released his first album. He was brought up with the stylings of such artists as Johnny Cash, John Mayer and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and his original songs delve into the creative, story-telling element of country music, with the guitar-heavy drive of classic rock anthems.

The self titled album was the result after Tom signed to AMS records in October of last year. This album comprises of 13 original songs, with most of the instruments and vocals (including piano, bass and guitar) played by Tom. He’s been promoting some of these songs at various festivals with his band, whilst travelling across the UK and Europe, and has played alongside such bands as The Feeling, Elio Pace, and Oli Brown. In one month the album has already managed to climb into the top 10 in the iTunes country chart. You can get a sample of Tom’s style and download the album on www.tomwrightguitar.com

Anyone who was a fan of live music in Peterborough during the 70’s and 80’s will remember Five Card Trick. They were a six piece band who I often saw in local pubs. They had excellent vocal harmonies and developed a showband style of performance and were regularly playing all the popular club venues locally. The Tropicana, Hickories and Rinaldo’s and the numerous social clubs which were thriving at the time. Winners of the prestigious Pub Entertainer of the Year the band went on to support chart topping acts locally and nationally. With the decline of live music venues locally the band went on to become a function band, playing forces bases, cruise ships and the huge clubs on the Northern circuit. After a few years away from the local music scene, some of the members started playing under the name of Fat Chantz. That band still exists but Five Card Trick have returned and the band has a new seven piece line up featuring two lead vocalists, two keyboard players, lead and bass guitars and drums and of course the

tight vocal harmonies for which they were so renowned in the early days. The three original members of the band – lead guitarist John Wright and bass player Colin Benton and band leader Baz Rutterford are joined by four new members. They include two members of the Kingsgate church band Gary Readfern Gray on keyboards and vocals, Ian Ferris on guitar and vocals along with powerful vocalist Mauricky Collins and music teacher Lee Dash on drums complete the line up (although sound engineer Paul Preston is an important component). First time around Five Card Trick brought a bit of fun and a great mix of oldies to their performance and they promise the same this time. They’re already booked in for the 1.30pm slot for the Deepings Raft Race on August 2 and other August gigs include The Nags Head in Bourne on August 15, The Goat at Frognall on August 22 and The Crown on Lincoln Road on August 29.
