PETERBOROUGH’S PAST THROUGH A LENS Local street photographer Chris Porsz is showcasing some of his most iconic images of 80s Peterborough in a glossy new book. A New England, out this month, is a unique collection of photographs from the 70s and 80s, many of which are published for the first time, and are living history of Peterborough’s most interesting characters. Chris told ESP – “A New England has been thirty years in the making and the images will take you on a nostalgic journey to the early eighties. They capture some of the mood, hopes and aspirations of our country at that time through just fleeting expressions.” Chris’ archive is now a priceless social record of a constantly changing city. A series of 'reunions' where Chris has reunited characters to re-create decades old photos have brought him international acclaim. A New England will be available to buy through Chris’ website: www.chrisporsz.com.

DICK WHITTINGTON Following the spectacular success of the Cresset's panto Cinderella last year which was seen by over 11,000 people, the Cresset and Premier Pantomimes are back, bigger and better with Dick Whittington.
was a loveable fop really. I suppose Idle Jack’s a bit like that really. I think he’s a nice guy and he gets himself in trouble a bit too often. You’d send him on an errand and he’d come back with the wrong thing every time!”
This enchanting tale of a young man who travels from Peterborough (Oh yes he does!) to the City of London to find his fortune is a classic panto favourite and promises to be a fantastic family show.
The hero and heart throb of the panto is none other than singer Andy Scott-Lee – “As a kid it was tradition every year to go and see the panto – so for me it’s like a really big thing. It’s different now because it’s my family coming to watch me so it’s quite nerve wracking. It’s just a magical time of year, it’s Christmas and everyone’s in good spirits and they want to be entertained and hopefully that’s what we do!”
Photo: Chris Brudenell
Former Eastenders star Ricky Groves, says he’s looking forward to hitting the Cresset stage as Idle Jack– “I’ve done lots of TV and a few bits of reality TV and plays – but panto is different. I’ve done the baddie so I thought I’d have a go at the fun guy who’s going to get involved in a bit of the slapstick.” Ricky knows that after nine years in a top TV soap he’ll always be ‘the guy from Eastenders’ – “It’s difficult to get away from the character of Garry because in some ways he

Patric and Adam make the perfect comedy duo and this will be their fourth year working together. Believe us the ad libs are worth the ticket price!

LIGHTS UP! What time is it? It’s Christmas time! Over 5,000 turned up at Cathedral Square for this year’s Christmas lights switch-on and it was a fantastic event. The Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor George Simons flipped the switch, alongside reality TV star Chico. ESP Magazine was there to interview the X Factor celebrity, and we spoke to the spectators to find out their favourite thing to do in Peterborough during the festive period.

If you weren’t able to see the spectacular lights being turned on, fear not. There’s still plenty more going on in the Boro. Claire Burrows (62) from Whittlesey told us – “Taking the grandkids to Nene Valley Railway’s Santa Special has become a Christmas tradition. The kids get to see Santa, eat sweets and mince pies, whilst I sit back with a nice glass of wine.” This festive experience run’s right up until December 24 but must be

booked in advance on www.nvr.org.uk/ events/santa-special as it’s hugely popular! It’s a busy time of year for Santa. The jolly man can also be seen at Sacrewell Farm. Bethany Hooper (30) from Bretton explained – “I took the family to Sacrewell last December and was happy to see what an effort they’d made. I took my daughter on a sleigh ride, and we got to see a nativity scene featuring real animals. It was magical.” The farm is going all out once again this year. Visit www.sacrewell.org.uk for more info on their festive fun.
Stuart Chambers (38) from Hampton believes the simplest things can fill you with Christmas spirit. “It’s all about the lights,” he said. “I walk through the city centre every Thursday night during late night shopping. The market stalls are usually quite impressive too.” Traders from the City Market have marquee stalls in Long Causeway from December 3 – December 16 while the Moroccan Berber market returns to Cathedral Square from December 6 – December 29 for gifts with a difference.

The phrase ‘the atmosphere was electric’ is often overused but it’s a fitting description in this case as the anticipation of the crowd as they awaited Louis’ arrival, followed by the eruption as he appeared on stage could surely have powered the lights all by itself.
s a medal winning Olympic Gymnast and now star of Strictly Come Dancing, Eye boy Louis Smith has been a shining light in our city for a while now, but recently he lit up Peterborough quite literally, when he turned on the Christmas lights at Serpentine Green. ESP’s Sarah Tempest was there to cheer him on and catch a few words with him afterwards…
A
Hundreds turned out to greet Louis, who was treated to an enthusiastic reception by fans, especially the young ladies in the crowd, some of whom were quite overcome when he acknowledged their cries of “We love you Louis!” Whatever the ‘Smith’ equivalent of a Justin Bieber ‘Belieber’ is, they were out in force in Hampton that night! Asked if he ever got tired of such adulation, Louis said – “How can you get bored of this? It is just fantastic – unbelievable. It’s a delight when I do get to come home, and to a spectacular sight like this.” Also amongst the crowd were several young gymnasts, all aspiring to follow in Louis’ Adidas trainers and make it to the top and five of them had the honour of helping Louis to throw the switch. They were eleven year-old Chloe Peacock a squad gymnast training at Spiral in Bretton who’s deaf and is booked in for a major operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital in December and Isiahia Lugo (8) who also trains at Spiral in Bretton and was encouraging Louis to work his hip action in the show! Cousins Jessica Farrow (8) who trains at Footworks in Woodston

I chatted to 7 year-old Hannah and 11 year-old Zoe from Hampton who were excitedly waving their flags and have been watching Louis on Strictly Come Dancing. Asked what they’d like to say to him, they replied with a simple, “Good luck Louis!” Nuff said! After the big switch on, Louis stayed twice as long as he should have to chat with fans, pose for photos and sign autographs, much to their delight. The lights were beautiful, Louis was overwhelmed and the fans were happy. All in all a successful night! As, Chantelle Watson, the centre manager, said afterwards – “Wow, that was an amazing turnout for Louis and our young gymnasts. Everyone in Hampton and Peterborough is so proud of Louis’ achievements it was lovely to be able to show him that support at Serpentine Green.” Couldn’t have put it better myself!
Anita from TuDanse – “I hope Louis can make the final – I’ve bet on him! Work hard, Louis, think it’s the Olympics and you’ll come out with Gold this time!” Rhags at Hedz Up barbers, the man behind #undersweep! “Just do your best. Dance your heart out and keep doing your acrobatics cos nobody else can do that. Go Louis! You know that Hedz Up, the boys, the whole of Peterborough is behind you. I’m one of your fans, even though we’re tight and we’re best friends.” Jody Cater at the Blue Boar in Eye – “Good luck and do your best!”

Louis! Although hopes are high that our boy Louis Smith can win this series of Strictly Come Dancing with his dance partner Flavia Cacace, whatever happens in the competition (and considering some of the ridiculous scores and comments the judges have given him at times, you never know) we can definitely say that Louis has once again put Peterborough on the map and done our city proud. I caught up with him after he’d switched on the Christmas lights at Serpentine Green to talk all things Strictly, THAT haircut and ‘chest envy’ before getting a quick dance lesson from the man himself. “Strictly is crazy, it’s brilliant,” said Louis, “going through you have real highs and lows. Obviously it’s really hard work, it really is – you crack the routine and you feel good, then you have the stress of doing it live and then the high of getting through. It’s an emotional roller coaster but it’s great. My Mum is loving it. It was her favourite show before I went on the programme so you can imagine what
she’s like now. She’s really enjoying it. She comes to watch me every week. “All the dances I’ve performed have been so different so I can’t really say what I’ve least enjoyed. Training for the Paso Doble was certainly a lot less stressful than the week before,” (Louis and Flavia danced the American Smooth and received a mixed reaction from the judges who didn’t like the ‘Quickstep’ style choreography) but the Tango in Halloween week was definitely my favourite.” After Rhags at Hedz Up barbers, creator of Louis’ now famous ‘undersweep’ haircut told me of the new ‘lucky haircut’ he had planned for Louis if he were to reach the semi finals, I wondered how Louis felt about his prospective new look. “Rhags did tell me about it but I don’t know what it is. I’ll hear what he’s got planned first before I say yes!” Looking good is obviously something Louis takes care over so I had to ask if he ever had ‘chest envy’ over professional dancer Artem, who’s fond of (happy days!) getting his shirt off. “No!” laughs Louis, “I think he envies mine!” After all the stresses and ups and downs of Strictly, Louis has got Christmas back in the ‘boro to look forward to, but how will he be spending it? “Hopefully with smiles and a nice shiny glitter ball above the fireplace,” he says with a twinkle in his eye. “I’ve got a nice little space saved for it!
“Actually, I’m just looking forward to having a bit of time at home, relaxing, having a cup of tea and just seeing my friends.” Whilst chatting with Louis was lovely as always, I couldn’t resist the urge for a quick ‘keeeeeeeep dancing’ Strictly pose with our boy. “You need to lean back more,” Louis instructs me as we pose, in hold, for the camera. Lean back? I could barely stand up without falling over and looking down, my ‘frame’ was not so much spaghetti arms more Spaghetti Junction. Let’s just say, it’s not as easy as they make it look and just served to prove that I’m more Ginger Ale than Ginger Rogers. Louis has clearly loved his time on the show and is really grateful to everyone who voted to keep him and Flavia in the competition, especially on the weeks when the judges’ scores let them down. “I want to say a massive thank you to the fans. From day one when I just had five followers on Twitter until now, the support has been tremendous so a big thank you.” But before I let him go (quite literally, poor boy) I had to get some inside information and goss from behind the scenes. “Backstage gossip?” he muses, ”I know some of the girls are quite fond of Artem, but I’m not telling you which ones.” Spoilsport! Attica VIP is open for Business! You read all about it here first and now the time has arrived to raise a glass of bubbly to the opening of Attica VIP – the city’s eagerly awaited boutique club and cocktail lounge. ESP has been supporting this new venue right from the beginning and we know hundreds of you have been talking it up on Facebook and to our Man About Town Pep Cipriano, who’s no doubt negotiated his own private booth already! After the corporate opening night, and the public opening night on December 1 we hear many of you are planning to make a Christmas night out of it at Attica this month. If you were there and we papped you then look out for your photo in next month’s issue.
This includes the new Scannet security system – the first of its kind in the city – which is already used in clubs in London and elsewhere to guarantee you have a safe night out you can enjoy. Staff have been trained to meet the expectations of customers, the cocktail and champagne selection will blow your mind and unique features like the epic touch screen DJ consul and swish booths in partnership with the likes of Dom Perignon will make your visit feel extra special. The best thing is all this class and elegance doesn’t hurt your pocket. Admission and drinks prices are in line with all the other major venues in the city centre. The only policy you have to adhere to is: ‘No effort, no entry.’ This means no ripped denim or sports shoes. Make the effort to dress smart and you’ll be granted entry.
The Attica ethos is simple. It’s a place like nowhere else in Peterborough where they promise you a good night out in sophisticated surroundings with top drawer music and a feel good vibe to go with it. It certainly has the wow factor!
We’re looking forward to hearing all about your experience at Attica, whether it’s sipping cocktails in the Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH) booths or chillaxing at the bar after having had your order taken by iPad! All you need to do is email pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk
One of the four business people behind Attica VIP is Steve Stinders who told us – “This is a new concept for the city with an upmarket feel that should suit an older audience. It’s state-of-the-art with things you won’t have seen in Peterborough before.”
Bookings are filling up fast for booths and venue hire for Christmas and New Year so get in quick by calling 01733 303303. In the meantime we wish the guys at Attica VIP a very merry Christmas and we’ll be raising a glass or two with you as we countdown to the New Year.

CHANCE TO MEET MARVELOUS MARVIN! Boxing fans will not want to miss this one. ‘Marvelous’ Marvin Hagler is coming to Peterborough! This is as big as it gets when it comes to legends of the ring.
ANTONIO: MY TRIBUTE Anyone who owns a Vespa is cool in my book. Anyone who owns a red Vespa is even cooler. Anyone who imports a brand new red Vespa PX from Italy is much cooler. Anyone who decides to do this well into his 70s is a legend. That was the much loved and respected Antonio Imbriano who sadly passed away last month. Antonio’s touching funeral was packed with mourners who connected with him in different ways. I’ll remember him with paint brush and broom in hand; helping his son Vic put the finishing touches to his gym (Vic’s Gym). Most of all I remember a photo of Antonio at the Italian Festival, beaming with pride as he stood alongside his Vespa. But the best photo of Antonio is in the gym. It’s a place for contenders but only one true champion... Antonio is missed but never forgotten.
For me he was the best middleweight of his time (yes, better than Sugar Ray Leonard) and thanks to boxing after-dinner show maestro – Kevin Sanders – fight fans can meet the former undisputed champion at An Evening With Marvelous Marvin at Radius in the Solstice on February 28. Kev’s brought a whole host of world class fighters to the city over the years including Joe Frazier, Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns and Roberto Duran but bringing Hagler here has been a mission impossible for so long until now. Hagler held the middleweight crown for seven years during the 1980s and still holds the highest knockout percentage of all champions in his division with 78 per cent. Ring Magazine voted him as the fourth greatest middleweight of all time and boxing writers regularly refer to Hagler as having one of the best boxing ‘chins’ (hard to knock out) in history.
BANYAN TREAT AT FESTIVAL
Tickets to see Hagler are flying out fast. Leave it until the New Year and you’ll miss out. Book now on: 07872 601467 or 01733 371912.
It was one of the coldest days of the year so far but that didn’t stop the city’s Muslim community celebrating Eid by putting on a festival in Cathedral Square.
HIGH VIS THE BIZ AT BALDERSTON Check out the photo. It was one of many 'test' shots taken by my work experience photographer. There were obviously better photos with me actually looking at the camera but each one of them had half a thumb covering the lense. She's now selling thimbles at the market. Ironically, this photo actually shows off the high visibility jacket better than all the other 'thumb' shots – and standing out from the crowd is what it's all about at Balderston this winter.
I needed some winter warming grub to keep me toasty and the guys at The Banyan Tree came to the rescue. Restaurant owner Dinesh and his team were serving up tasty samples of some of his fine cuisine alongside other stalls that showcased different aspects of Muslim culture. Dinesh: If you need some food reviewing you know who to call!
The Hampton-based BMW dealer has already sold several of these top quality jackets (Santa and the green stocking not included) and R 1200 GS owners in particular can take advantage of a visibility pack featuring a Fluro System 6 helmet, LED lights and fitting for less than you've spent on the missus' Christmas present. But don't worry if money's a bit tight because there's 0% finance on the visibility pack, a Tourshell Suit package and on high performance goodies for the brilliant S1000 RR. Check out all the winter offers at www.balderston.net or give the guys a call on 01733 565470.

MY WORD OF THE MONTH
Sister pub to The Dragon in Werrington
Christmas Happy holidays! This is why I ‘love’ Christmas so much: Slazenger, Brussels sprout fart, tension, overcooked veg, Superman III, 16 Cannelloni, best bottle of liquor for photos only, bacala, fennel, Lidl crackers, rigged family quiz, Merry Christmas texts, Rennie, p****d-up neighbours, red muffin tops, JTF wrapping paper and a lame reason to be happy all the time.
New Years Eve Through the decade show with Trevor Smith £10.00 per ticket
FIRE WALKING WITHOUT THE COALS I’m keeping out of the way of the Simmonds brothers... They’re not happy I failed to show at their recent charity fire walking event at The Dragon in Werrington. The boys think I ducked out because I was scared. Truth is I had several fire walks of my own that night – up and down the stairs to my toilet. My bum was on fire and I actually ended up putting the toilet roll in the fridge. I’ll stop there in case some of you are eating while reading this! I visited a city restaurant the night before and won’t be going there again. Stuart and Chris: I’ll make a donation (not the toilet kind) if you promise to believe my story?
TOYS DELIVERY ON TWO WHEELS THIS CHRISTMAS It’ll probably be freezing or chucking it down but it’s time I stopped being a fair weather rider and threw my leg over my Triumph to do something for a good cause this Christmas.

That’s why I hope to be joining a Christmas Charity Ride on December 9 from Sycamore’s Harley Davidson dealership in Uppingham to Peterborough City Hospital. The event – now in its 15th year – is organised by the Rutland Harley Owners Group and will feature hundreds of motorcyclists who are encouraged to dress in appropriate festive attire (I’ll hang mistletoe from my foot pegs) as they ride with a police escort to deliver toys to children who are in hospital this Christmas. Bikers who want to join the ride out need to be at the pre-ride briefing for 10.30am. The ride sets off at 11am, passing through Oundle and Elton before arriving at the hospital at 12.30pm. All riders are encouraged to donate toys and locally based bike insurer, Bennetts, will be sending unique teddy bears for the children and the all-important sustenance for the nurses.

Taking our inspiration from Strictly Come Dancing, ESP’s style guru Sue Donnelly has our guide to this season’s party looks. We’ve used the current trends of lace, burgundy wine colours, metallics, jewelled embellishment and the peplum to create beautiful ballroom elegance, tantalising temptation with the tango and the cheeky fun of the Latin. We may not all be as young as our models, but don’t let that stop you. The vibe from the dance floor can still be yours this Christmas time.

We all know Warwick Davis as the Peterborough based actor who’s starred in popular film franchises such as Harry Potter and Star Wars. Our local celeb must have travelled to some amazing filming locations, but I have a feeling his most recent journey will stand out above them all. An Idiot Abroad is returning to our television screens, and this time Karl Pilkington is joined by Warwick. The interesting pairing (which I can’t wait to see) will follow in the footsteps of famous explorer Marco Polo and embark on an epic 5,000-mile journey from Venice to Eastern Europe, India and China. I’ve spoken to Warwick a couple of times for ESP Magazine and he’s such an outgoing, funny and positive person. Karl however, is not. I’ve never spoken to the guy, but those familiar with his podcasts, XFM radio show and first two seasons of An Idiot Abroad will know that Karl likes a good moan.
I’M WITH THIS IDIOT
Karl commented – “I found that being with happy positive people annoys me.”
I can imagine Warwick wanting to give every new opportunity a try, and positively encouraging Karl to do the same… which I fear will not go down well! The show’s creator Ricky Gervais said – “This is Karl's most epic journey so far. But, despite being a seasoned traveller he is still as angry, confused and naive as ever. At one point he seriously asks Warwick ‘do you have knees?”
Early footage has already shown Warwick taking to the sky with the aid of balloons, whilst in another scene Pilkington attempts to use a jet-pack. I honestly can’t wait to see what else the pair get up to. The three part special airs exclusively on Sky 1, starting on Friday November 30 at 9pm. Read our full interview with Warwick now on www.espmag.co.uk
PocketWARWICK It’s been a great year for the Willow actor. Warwick’s travelled around the world with Karl, starred in his own sitcom (Life’s Too Short) and also released a new app. If you’ve not downloaded PocketWARWICK yet, I highly recommend you do so. The best way to describe the game is that it’s Tamagotchi meets the Sims – two of my favourite childhood games! In my new favourite boredom killer, players look after their own ‘pocket’ version of Warwick Davis, sending him on film auditions and other tasks – with the aim to take over the film industry one movie role at a time! For each successful audition and role that Warwick completes, he’s rewarded with XP points, and films that do well at the box office pay royalties. The
more successful he is, the bigger a star he becomes – moving from a Z-lister to a potential A-lister. These XP points and royalties can then be used to buy items in-game, allowing players to improve Warwick’s living environment as well as buy items for future auditions. In addition, you can buy in-app credits for items you want at any stage. So, if you’re a bit of an entertainment buff like me, or ever fancied yourself as a TV or film agent – definitely give this a try. It’s a bit of fun, and strangely addictive – a bit like Facebook, you can’t help but keep going back for more! Warwick told me – “It's just come out on Android as well. It's been amazingly well received. People are literally obsessed with it. I get tweets every day from people telling me how their Pocket Warwick is doing. All the reviews from hardened gamer websites were good too, which I wasn't expecting. Ricky (Gervais) and Karl (Pilkington) have seen the
app. Ricky likes it, but I think Karl thinks it's a bit weird. I don't think either of them play it, they see enough of the real Warwick at the moment. Michael Owen tweeted about the app, so he's a fan. We're still updating this app, with more tasks and new outfits. It's a constant process.” To keep the game fresh, new features such as costumes are often updated. Even better news is that it’s free to download, so you’ve got nothing to lose by trying it out for yourself as of now.

Local actor Warwick Davis is a busy guy and now he’s back on the box in An Idiot Abroad 3. ESP’s Mikey Clarke can’t wait…
Warwick added – “I have so many amazing memories of my travels with Karl; the people we met and the cultures we experienced. My eyes were opened to the diversity and beauty of our world. I am really proud of the show, and can’t wait to share it with the viewers of Sky1 HD.”

paparazzi Caught in the act? The charity firewalk at The Dragon pub in Werrington was another big success with former Face of ESP Jess Lockhart so keen to have another go after last year’s event she returned to walk on hot coals once again along with dozens of other brave souls. As ever a good night was had by all and the place was packed. Fireworks Fiesta returned this year but at its new home Peterborough Arena. Nearly 10,000 people attended the event organised by the Peterborough Rotary and Round Table Clubs. Local X Factor star Craig Saggers and Diva Fever performed live and well over £10,000 was raised for local charities. Mike Harris was our man behind the lens. It’s party season now and Edwards on Broadway is certainly attracting those up for a good night out. Photographers Wayne Williamson and Mitch Brewster have been out capturing the party people in action. See all our paparazzi photos on www.espmag.co.uk and facebook.

TOWIE star Joey Essex was supposed to appear at Halo back in October, but, due to filming commitments he had to cancel at the last minute. Everyone was of course very disappointed and Joey himself took to Twitter to apologise. He asked if he could reschedule a date, and of course Halo said yes. So, on Saturday December 15 Joey Essex will be at Halo for a very merry TOWIE Christmas special. There’ll be plenty of opportunities to meet the man himself, and, maybe share a drink or two. Reeeeem. Other great nights over the Christmas period include a ‘Spank Christmas Party’ on Sunday December 23, Christmas Eve, Boxing Day with Karma and of course a VERY special New Year’s Eve Party (more details to be released later). If you’re out and about in December you can be assured that the best parties in town will be at Halo. If you want a little bit extra why not book a booth? GLOwING FOR GOLD Want to celebrate in style this party season? Then do it with gleaming metallic shades for eyes, lips and nails. The best thing about gold make up is that it suits nearly every skin type, colour and age and adds warmth to any party look whether it’s a gold flecked pout or amazing metallic eyes. However, apply with care if you want to look chic, it’s easy to overdose on it so I suggest you pick just one feature, such as your eyes, lips or cheeks and mute the rest with soft, matt shades of toffee and caramel.
The Golden Rules... •
•
•
First, decide where you’re going to wear gold before applying it. One area is enough, more than that and it tends to look tacky. The second rule is make sure you choose the right gold for you. The paler your skin, the paler the shade of gold you should choose. Never wear gold with other frosted or shimmery make up. Too much glitter doesn’t look good on anyone! Use a semimatt foundation to even out skin tone and keep the rest of your make up toned down.
MBE ON THE MOVE My Body Essentials are pleased to announce that they’re moving to bigger premises on Shrewsbury Avenue and will be introducing new treatments including skin peels, skin polishing, fungal nail treatment and their most requested treatment – removal of body fat! (Low level laser body sculpture). Do you want solutions for pigmentation, fine lines, acne, dull tired skin, redness, sun damage or wrinkles? Then look no further! Give them a call on 01733 305102 to book a free consultation with digital skin analysis offering professional advice and solutions. They’re also offering 10% discount off vouchers if purchased during December which are redeemable against MBE treatments and Skin First until end of April 2013.

S A M T S I R CH HEALTH SURVIVAL GUIDE!
NEW YEAR, NEW COLUMN Next year my column will be focused on helping you gain more. When I say ‘more’ I’m talking vitality, energy or get up and go, call it what you like I want to help you get a little more! We may lose vitality for many reasons – the types of food we eat, our lifestyle in general and even due to our emotional wellbeing. How you feel emotionally is as important as looking after yourself physically. So next year it’s about what or who is draining you of your vitality and see where you can start to detox your life in general. Do you have goals or a vision for your life? Do you know what direction you want to go in? I looked at that this year and it’s made a huge difference to my life so hopefully I can pass on some help to you!
Let’s look at the up and coming festive season and see how we can get the best out of it whilst still enjoying the goodies on offer all around us. Here are a few tips that will be easy to add in – 1. Hydrate. When you are drinking more alcohol and eating less water rich fruits and vegetables, staying indoors more, having an excess salt intake and with late night parties you’ll soon start to become dehydrated. So make a plan to have more water during the day, if you dislike cold water in the winter (like me) then sneak in a few mugs of warm water, and maybe add in a few herbal teas. 2. Get a few early nights. Ideally trying to get to bed before 11pm. Better still, go with your bio-rhythm one night (huh??) that means go with your natural rhythm. If by 9pm you’re just about to nod off, just take yourself off to bed,
otherwise the next wave might hit you at 10.30pm which is one that lifts your energy so when you do go to bed you find it more difficult to sleep. 3. Top up your vitamins. You may benefit from taking extra nutrients from a good all round multivitamin/mineral formula with added Vitamin D. We put more demands on our body through the Christmas period so it may need a little boost (if you’re on medication take advice first).
5. Watch the salt. Salt intake rockets during Christmas with all those extra cured meats, gravy dinners, nuts etc. Why not swap some of those nuts/seeds for the naked type i.e. raw without salt and other flavourings. Nuts and seeds are incredibly healthy foods at moderate levels. Also look for the lower salt varieties of foods where possible.
4. Take a digestive rest day. Why not consider lightening the load in between some mammoth meals, you can use light foods such as fruits, veggie soups, juices etc. Our digestion needs a lot of energy
6. Learn to do more with your veggies. There are so many ways to make vegetables more appealing rather than the bland steaming or boiling (hopefully you’re not still boiling your veg!), look for

some good cook books on making veg more appealing, there are so many out there, and use up your leftover veggies to boost fibre too. And just before I leave the topic of veggies I want to end this year’s column as it started which was looking at the phyto chemicals in our plant kingdom, I could not miss out our festive favourite (or maybe not for you) the humble BRUSSELS SPROUT here are some of its finer points: • Lightly steamed Brussels may help to lower cholesterol (don’t over steam) • May protect from certain cancers • They help our detoxification systems

• They’re a powerful antioxidant • They may help to reduce inflammation • They also contain high levels of Vitamin K and C amongst many other good nutrients. So remember to add in a few Brussels this year! I wish you all the best for Christmas and the coming New Year, I also want to give a heartfelt thank you for some very special friends in my life who’ve helped me in my time of change and growth throughout this year. They’ve all made us hugely proud and made it a year to remember but as a new year approaches it’s even better to see their legacy carry on. Peterborough City Council, with the support of Vivacity, is investing over £1/2m in refurbishing the Sports & Athletics Arena adding to significant improvements already made to the changing rooms within the Regional Fitness & Swimming Centre.
A warm welcome at the Athletics track
Vivacity, DIAL Peterborough and other partners have created a number of events and clubs in the city to encourage more people with disabilities to take up sport in the city. The Peterborough Adapted Cycling Scheme is one hugely successful programme which attracted over £60,000 of funding, so who knows, we could soon have own budding David Weir! You may not be aware but Vivacity also provides a successful Stroke Rehabilitation Programme and gym sessions for adults with disabilities. They’ve also worked in partnership with the Football Association and Peterborough United Community Foundation in launching a new disabled football session. For swimmer Harriett Lee the city’s swimming programme for youngsters with disabilities is of particular interest and she’s been delighted to see how the legacy continues to unfold in the city.
ESP met up with Paralympian double medal winner Matt Skelhon a few months back so it was great to catch up with him again as he was being honoured by the city. We wondered if months down the line he’s still surprised by the level of support as fans were keen to meet and congratulate him? “No I’ve come to terms with it now,” said Matt. “I got used to it after Beijing. I look forward to speaking to the kids and they get excited when we go round with our medals. Whenever I speak to people whether it’s down the local pub or out in the street everyone’s still really positive and really interested in it.” Swimmer and bronze medal winner Harriet Lee added – “It’s such an amazing time of our lives so to have things like this

“I think this Games has been so about the legacy, it’s so important to keep that alive,” says Harriet. “Even if for the next couple of years we do a few school visits I think we’ve got to somehow keep what we did in the summer fresh in people’s minds and inspire them to keep going.”

claim to my heart at the moment.” Meanwhile back home in Stilton Matt is back in training for Rio but appreciates some down time in his local – “Everyone’s been behind me since I started so I suppose normally when I go down the pub it’s the one place I go where everyone sees me as me, and not somebody Civic recognition for Matt and Harriet who’s been to the Paralympics and won some medals. It’s nice to be able to go back in there and just be sort of normal again.” While it’s easy to see a surge of interest in certain sports, is it hard to get people to take up rifle shooting?
“It’s such an amazing time of our lives...”
Harriet, originally from Huntingdon now lives in Peterborough and trains at the Regional Pool so where does her heart lie? “At the moment it’s Peterborough because my coach is based here and this is where I trained for the last 18 months to get me to that place and get me that medal, so Peterborough has a big
“Sometimes,” admits Matt, “but as soon as you’ve had a few shots it’s that difficult that you want to get a little bit better and when you start shooting it’s quite easy to get addicted to it.”
As Harriet is also trying for Rio we’ll no doubt be seeing her training hard in the city – “Yes I’ve just decided to try for Rio so another four years! I’ve got breaks in between with Worlds and Commonwealth so we’ll just take each year as it comes health wise and fitness wise and see where we go with that.” To find out more about sports and leisure facilities in the city visit www.vivacity-peterborough.com or call 01733 864776.

ONLY FOOLS & GOOSES As the whole advertising industry is telling us – Christmas is coming! And the UK's supermarkets and supershops have unleashed their latest festive ad campaigns upon us, which means for the next month on TV it's a blizzard of jingley bells, glittery accoutrements and never ending shots of glazed hams and big puddings... but anyway, that's enough about Lisa Riley and Richard Arnold on Strictly Come Dancing – back to Christmas. This year I decided what
better way to celebrate than by fooling around in the replica set of the Trotter flat from Only Fools & Horses. Seeing as there's no chance of there ever being a new Christmas special of the show I decided to make my own. All it took was a few props from the show and the brilliant Boycie & Marlene – I'll leave you to decide whether the smile on her face is as a result of me giving her a Christmas goosing while Boycie wasn't looking!

Meanwhile, my favourite local actor Warwick Davis makes his long-awaited appearance in a Idiot Abroad 3 on Sky1 this month. The three part special begins on Friday November 30 at 9pm.

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY
gavin.miller@espmag.co.uk
Released: December 13
After the Return of the King wrapped up The Lord of the Rings trilogy in 2003 – for a few years the cinema-going experience at Christmas didn’t quite feel the same. Well Peter Jackson is back embracing Tolkien once again with The Hobbit three-parter (unsurprisingly recently expanding from the initial two parts) that will see that festive void filled until 2014 – starting with An Unexpected Journey. So it’s time to dust off those extended edition DVDs – or just go out and buy the Blu-ray versions to save the hassle like me – and venture back to The Shire once again. In these prequels Brit favourite Martin Freeman headlines as young Bilbo Baggins – made famous by Ian Holm in the originals – as he joins a band of

JACK REACHER
PITCH PERFECT
Released: November 30
Released: Boxing Day
Released: December 21
War Horse star Jeremy Irvine headlines this latest retelling of the Charles Dickens’ novel with Four Weddings and a Funeral director Mike Newell at the helm – as a young orphan is thrust into socialite status with the help of an unknown benefactor. Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter and Holliday Granger co-star.
Tom Cruise sees if he can still survive as a lead outside of his successful Mission Impossible franchise, as a homicide investigator who blows open a case when a man is wrongly convicted of killing five people. Robert Duvall and Rosamund Pike co-star in this action-drama which hopes to put Cruise back on the Hollywood map.
The latest musical box-office sensation out of the States is this toe-tapping number with some excellent comedy-tinted performances from its young Hollywood cast. The Twilight Saga’s Anna Kendrick injects some new life into her college’s rag-tag all-girl band – to take on the boys in a campus competition.
dwarves on a treacherous journey to the Lonely Mountain to reclaim a lost kingdom conquered by the dragon Smaug. You’ll be pleased to hear some familiar faces will be returning with Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Elrond (Hugo Weaving), Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), Saruman (Christopher Lee) – and of course Andy Serkis’ Gollum. Older Bilbo (Holm), Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Legolas (Orlando Bloom) reportedly make cameos. Some familiar British faces like Benedict Cumberbatch, Billy Connolly, Richard Armitage, James Nesbitt and Stephen Fry, are also on hand for what should undoubtedly be the biggest movie at the box office this yuletide season. But after the masterpiece that was The Lord of the Rings, let’s hope this is just as magical…

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (12A)
All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.
Released: December 3
THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS Released: December 7 Rapper-turned-actor-turneddirector RZA’s pet kung fu project finally sees the light of day – with Russell Crowe lending his Oscarwinning support to the cast. Ex WWE Champion Dave ‘The Animal’ Bautista and Lucy Liu costar in this tale of warriors, assassins and a lone hero battling in ancient China.

THE ORANGES Released: December 7 The enduring friendship between two families is tested when Oliver Platt’s daughter (Leighton Meester) returns after a five-year absence and enters into an affair with her father’s best friend (Hugh Laurie) – much to the chagrin of his wife Catherine Keener – in this comedy drama that at least looked good from the trailer.
TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE Released: November 30 Clint Eastwood steps in front of the camera for the first time in four years – starring in this baseball drama as a grizzled scout in his twilight years. Amy Adams stars as his daughter who helps him get through his final innings as his judgement in finding the ‘next big thing’ is questioned. With Justin Timberlake.
Christopher Nolan’s epic climax to his acclaimed superhero trilogy methodically builds into a breathtaking final third – which has an end game extremely befitting of Batman lore. This trademark dark-tinted third instalment is undoubtedly a slow burner – but despite so many interlacing character and mini plot points, Nolan pieces everything together into a fanboy’s dream jigsaw.
#####
All the cast impress – particularly Joseph Gordon-Levitt as do-good cop Blake – with newcomers (the sometimes inaudible) Tom Hardy dominating as super-human, terrorist villain Bane, and Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada) surprisingly spot-on as Selina Kyle/Catwoman – with Christian Bale (Bruce Wayne/Batman), Michael Caine and co. on usual top-form. Just like Batman’s new Batwing vehicle this really soars – and has raised the bar for a superhero series that may never be beaten.
Christ mas Special (360) Out now If there was any doubt 343 Industries could take Microsoft’s prized FPS franchise to the next level – that question has been answered with an emphatic yes. After taking over from previous developers Bungie, 343 have honed the single-player and multiplayer templates – rather than dramatically evolve it – as Master Chief returns to take on an ancient evil as the Reclaimer Saga and the start of a new trilogy begins.
#####
The campaign tells a great story, offering a superb cinematic experience and if this care and attention is taken with Halo 5 on Microsoft’s next console, I for one can’t wait.
HITMAN: ABSOLUTION (PS3/360/PC) Out now With the first three titles above featuring shooting and role-playing familiarity – this is your Christmas curveball. This brings something different to the table as hit assassin Agent 47 returns in a beautifully-designed world where stealth and improvisation is satisfyingly rewarded.

CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS II
ASSASSIN’S CREED 3
(PS3/360/PC) Out now
(360/PS3/PC) Out now
Treyarch shatters the tried and tested Call of Duty mould with the most ambitious addition to the series in years.
The animus is booted up for a fifth time as Ubisoft’s juggernaut tackles the American Revolution in the best Creed title yet.
For the first time, player choice shapes the exhilarating campaign – which jumps between the past and 2025 – and includes familiar faces from the original Black Ops.
With popular assassins Ezio and Altair now distant memories, it’s the turn of Native American Connor Kenway to play his part in saving the world from annihilation.
#####
All-new tactical strike force missions also have an effect on the story, while there’s also a much deeper zombies mode to get stuck into. With multiplayer as impressive as ever, this is undoubtedly the best COD since the first Modern Warfare.
WWE ’13
(360/PS3/PC) Out now
WWE have done to their latest game what they should do to their current brand –bringing back the Attitude era.
(PS3/360/WII) Out now
Developers Danger Close have gone for the shock factor in an attempt to try and get anywhere near the COD franchise.
#####
With the addition of friend interaction in Contracts Mode to add longevity to the whole package – this is one of the year’s most innovative titles that deserves to be a hit.
The 40-hour story, told in the incredible 18th century settings of Boston, New York and a stunning Frontier forest – includes naval missions, hunting and plenty of fresh weapons. AC3 is the revolution the series needed – as this takes it to the next level.
MEDAL OF HONOR: WARFIGHTER
But it sadly fires wide of the mark by providing a very basic shooter lacking in originality – bar some decent car chase scenes – and providing a modern terrorism backdrop that fails to resonate.
#####
It still is worth a playthrough though if you’re a fan of the genre, and it does boast some of the most impressive cut-scene graphics witnessed on next-gen consoles.
Stars from their late 90s heyday – like Stone Cold and The Rock – are back to bring some classic roleplaying storylines to add a different depth to the current roster.
#####
The gameplay has been honed to become the best in years – despite still falling short of No Mercy and Here Comes the Pain – and as a package is more impressive than CM Punk’s year long title reign.

If you’re a fan of the franchise you’ll probably already have this – or about to stick it in a stocking for a family member.
After last year’s disappointing release The Run – EA have got the franchise back on track with a truly exhilarating experience. Hot Pursuit developers Criterion are back, and they build on the good work they started two years ago by crafting that template into a Test Drive Unlimited 2-esque open sandbox arena – only a lot classier.
#####
Jump into cars, irritate police, dip in and out of races and beat your friends’ times – this is the social network of driving games.
Just when you thought Lego games couldn’t go any further – they build on the addition of Batman 2 with another gem.
F1 RACE STARS
(PS3/360/WIIU/PSV/PC) Out now Sega builds on the success of the original game by adding great depth and production values to this impressive pick-up-and-play karting title.
#####
Sonic and a stellar array of drivers, including Disney’s Wreck-it Ralph, hit superb Sega-themed tracks (from Afterburner to Panzer Dragoon) with fantastic modes and transforming vehicles, that go from car-toboat-to-copter. It still lacks the refinement of Mario Kart – drifting for example – but this is enjoyably spiky fun.

This was the next natural transition for the franchise and with voice talent – taken straight from the Peter Jackson-directed trilogy – implemented with great humour – playing as Frodo, Gandalf and Gollum in brick form has never been so much fun. Repetition is its only flaw, but production values make this a precious Lego addition.
SONIC & ALLSTARS RACING TRANSFORMED
A Christmas Day (and beyond) classic for the past couple of years, Harmonix are one of the few developers to have properly utilised Kinect – and even though it’s more of the same the choreography is done really well.
THE SIMS 3: SEASONS
Out now
(PC/MAC) Out now
This on the other hand is sadly the weaker cousin to Sonic’s karting experience – despite having its Formula One-inspired merits.
It was only fair a PC/Mac title was given some coverage in my Christmas Special – and as its currently number one in the home computer charts this deserves it.
#####
With limp power-ups and surprisingly charmless racing, it sadly looks better than it plays – despite okayish mechanics – and is in need of a Red Bull to give it wings.
#####
And with more than forty hits – including Vanilla Ice’s Ice, Ice Baby – looking a complete tool is assured!
(360/PS3/PC)
If you’ve got a kid who loves the sports but finds the Codies’ adult F1 offering too difficult there’s basic fun to be had playing as Hamilton, Button, Vettel and co – but this falls well short of a podium finish.
#####
It may be another expansion to the world of Sims 3, but for those of you who love this engaging world the addition of weather and seasonal events is an absolute must.
#####
This is only an extension of your pre-existing arena – though you can buy a new town from the get-go – but for fans this is a necessary expansion of your universe.

Mick Davison...
rom a chance encounter with the former Mr Posh Mick Jones who taught him an E chord in the late fifties, to being jostled by Keith Moon, to being the consummate Neil Young style performer he is, Mick Davison’s enjoyed a varied life stood behind a guitar.
F
“When Mick Jones taught me the E chord I just went home and into my bedroom and played it over and over and then kept going and learned more. I put the old Dansette record player on, Everlys playing and tried to play and sing like them. I loved the harmonies, still love harmonies. My old Dad wasn’t happy with the racket but I carried on.” Mick’s first guitar was a Spanish style nylon strung acoustic – “I painted it orange after seeing Bill Haley on television, it was a black and white tele but I imagined it to be orange!” A good call as most Gretsch guitars at that time were sunburst orange. After playing in his bedroom and hooking up with a few guys around town Mick met up with Freddie Iveson, Pete Trawler, Eddie Cavanagh, Dave Lodge and Alan Sewell to form The Writ who were signed to Decca in 1966. “Our debut release, Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind, bubbled under the top thirty and got some air play but that was about it,” Mick told me. “We were managed by Jonathan King and when we were recording the single in New Bond Street and through in the control room I could see Jonathan talking to Jimmy Savile…” Now, with King’s history and Savile’s alleged

Carrying on my quest to meet the fine musicians who’ve shaped the music scene in and around the city I had a real treat this month in catching some quality time with my old pal Mick Davison. Modesty is a virtue and with that said Mick Davison is a virtuous soul indeed.
history some may say that was a brush with stardom that one would be fortunate to survive! After the single, The Writ toured the country and played alongside bands like The Who, Van Morrison and The Hollies. “We played The Gaiety in Ramsey and went to the pub next door, The Odd Un and drank with The Who. When we were all piling out Keith Moon and I barged shoulders and he shouted ‘bloody semi pros’ and gave me a look!” Mick also did auditions for The Hollies when Graham Nash left to join Crosby Stills and Nash and if you fast forward a few years to Mick’s meeting with Les Woods and Brian Gummer the harmonies he had so loved in the Everlys and CSNY manifested itself in the trio. “We played folk clubs a lot and the traditionalists hated us, the women loved us though ‘cos we were a bit more upbeat and funky!” The boys also played The Crown on Lincoln Road every Sunday lunchtime and it proved very popular – “We used to turn up and they were queuing around the pub! It was really awesome; we even charged for the Christmas do and earned some money for a change.” Various configurations of The Davison Woods bands flirted with each other over the years, and still do, but the next project for Mick was Midwezt. Teaming up with songwriter Charleen Armitage, Mick penned some
original country songs with her. “It was great to actually do some original stuff,” Mick admits, “and Charlie was a great songwriter and had a good voice as well. We got a lot of airplay in the States and especially in Daytona Beach, Florida. We did a live Skype interview with a DJ called Fred Inman all sat around Rex Gates’ computer!” Midwezt also put out a CD, something Mick’s very proud of – “Yeah I was proud of Midwezt and the CD and was pleased for old Rex, all the stuff he’s done over the years and this one gave him some control over what the finished article sounded like.” After a launch in London and decent sales of the CD the band pretty much finished, a new life had beckoned Charleen in
London. “It was a great time and a great band, it was good to be there at that time.” Mick still hits the local pubs with his band Frankly My Dear, playing uncompromising songs from the likes of Neil Young & Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and he’s not too bothered about commercialising his set to please some of the crowd – “That’s what we play really” – and that’s why Mick is a special guy. He plays from the heart and from the soul and stays true to himself, he is also very modest about his great talent and illustrious past but then again, that is the make up of this enigmatic musician and what makes him special.
A FESTIVAL’S FOR LIFE NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS… I don’t usually get all that HO! HO! HO! bull and commercialism for the 25th, however, and it is a big however… How many times are you sat there thinking, ‘What the hell shall I buy her/him/them for Christmas’? Here is a great idea… buy them a ticket for a festival for the summer. Bearded Theory gave me the thought, they’ve just released the line up for next year – check it out. The Levellers, Reverend and the Makers, Asian Dub Foundation and Seth Lakeman, Ezio and The Farm just to name a few. It’s a great festival, my personal favourite last year and really friendly. It’s on May 17 – 19 at Keddlestone Hall in Derbyshire with tickets £79. www.beardedtheory.co.uk Think of it, a unisex present that will last until the 19th of May and provide a hundred memories for the recipient… it’s the best present idea ever! Oh… and it’s easy to buy and easy to wrap…what more do you need?!

TIME TO PAY TRIBUTE TO BOB AND PAUL
Every so often you see something musically that you’ve got to tell everyone else about. That happened to me last month… So how lucky I am to be able to tell over 63,000 readers of ESP Magazine about Virgil Mcmahon. I followed my own recommendation in ESP to go to Stamford Corn Exchange to see the legendary Wilko Johnson and I was not disappointed with the former Dr Feelgood guitarist who performed with The Blockheads rhythm section at Stamford. Wilko’s style of guitar playing is unique and he was a big influence on many bands in the 70s. I’m sure that he has a big say in who supports his act and on this tour it’s a band called Virgil and the Accelerators. They’re a three piece rock band who perform some classic guitar rock but depend heavily on their own compositions. Virgil is most definitely the front man and plays awesome guitar. Considering the fact that he’s barely 20, Virgil displays a playing technique that I’ve only seen in a few guitarists. His virtuoso performance reminded me at times of Hendrix and Joe Bonamassa, or on a local level, Lloyd Watson. Virgil and the Accelerators are already in demand for 2013 and are scheduled to be the support act for three different tours being undertaken by Michael Schenker, Uriah Heep and Johnny Winter. So you have opportunity to judge for yourself what a true talent Virgil Mcmahon is. Incidentally if you see something that you want to share with the live music scene of Peterborough, email me: keith.dalton@espmag.co.uk
December brings the chance to remember two individuals who played a strong part in the local live music scene. That chance comes at two separate tribute evenings being held and both are aimed at helping charities. Taking them in date order, the first is being held on Friday December 7 at the PSL Club in New England and is A Night For Paul. It’s a tribute in memory of Paul Chatham who spent so much time encouraging, helping and promoting local musicians. Some of those people he was involved with are part of a very strong line up which includes Davison Woods, Lloyd Watson, Electric Warriors, Mighty Quinn and Dizzy Miss Lizzies. Colin Smith is doing the sound and light, so I’m sure he’ll be just one special guest performer on the night which promises to generate some useful funds for The British Lung Foundation. ESP’s very own Andy Slater will be the compere and you can get tickets at £5 in advance from 07551 328830 or on the door for £6. The second tribute is in memory of Bob Banks who we lost just over a year ago. I worked with Bob when Tut visited the studios of Lite FM and he was a great character as well as a fine musician. Bob’s tribute night is being held at Bourne Corn Exchange on Saturday December 22 and all profits will go to Amnesty International. Bob always championed charitable causes and volunteered a lot of time to help their fundraising. His name’s been associated with some of the area’s top bands over the years including Legend, The Tudors, Tut and The Influence and some of his former colleagues are performing at Bourne. The bill includes The Influence, Reckless, Nick Glover, Pennyless and The Tudors and the evening will feature some special appearances. Paul Chatham
It’s a great line up for a great guy and tickets are £5 from the Cake Kabin or Greetings Cards in Bourne. You can also phone 07549 993778 but hurry because I understand it’s selling out fast.
CANDLE THIEVES RELEASE NEW ALBUM Here’s a good idea for a Christmas present for fans of The Candle Thieves. The locally based duo have been in the recording studios again and early December sees the release of their new Weatherman EP. It comes following a busy year culminating in their September tour dates with Darren Hayes of Savage Garden. During those dates they got to play dream venues like the London O2, Bridgewater Hall and Vicar St in Dublin. The EP’s available from all online digital stores but the CD can only be purchased through the band’s website. If you want a copy the web address is www.thecandlethieves.com
JAZZ CLUB – NICE! Peterborough Jazz Club is regarded as one of the best venues for jazz in the East of England and they have regular evenings at The Great Northern hotel. They’re holding their Christmas Special at the hotel on Saturday December 16. It features the Liane Carroll Trio. Liane is currently regarded as one of the best UK jazz vocalists and she is joined on the night by her regular band members, bassist Roger Carey and drummer Mark Fletcher.
A classy performer, Liane has achieved huge acclaim and has regularly appeared as a headline act at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s in Soho, where she’s also recorded two live CDs for their Jazz House label. The concert is sure to be a sell-out so reserve your tickets quick. The price is £15 in advance or at the door if available. For more details log on to www.peterboroughjazzclub.co.uk
