Not only is the food delicious but we have to say the Banyan Tree restaurant on Westgate is looking hot too after a fantastic refurbishment! Owner Dinesh Odedra told ESP – “We’ve started our refurbishment and the first phase has been completed. We took feedback from our customers on what they’d like to see us do first. There was demand for more space downstairs. So, we extended the bar and lounge area and have also created a new space on the ground floor which is perfect for large groups booking their Christmas parties. “It’s created a totally different atmosphere in the restaurant where there is a great vibe every night. We’re planning to introduce some DJ events during the Christmas period that utilises this new space... so keep your ear to the ground!" We highly recommend the food here which is truly authentic Indian. Book now on 01733 342800.

City Switch O Carl Roach (27) from Dogsthorpe told me – “I came here mainly to see The Nuggetts. They’re my favourite local band. I stuck around however to see the rest of the day’s entertainment and the lights being switched on, and I’ve been really impressed by it all.”
ESP Dance Crew As Christmas parties go, Peterborough knows how to do it in style! The entertainment in the city centre kicked off at noon with school choirs creating a festive feel and there was no let up until the amazing light display in the early evening.
The stage was hosted by Kev & Ros from Heart FM breakfast and the ESP Dance Crew kicked off the late afternoon section of Peterborough’s Christmas light switch-on stage entertainment. Our girls dancing to a selection of upbeat tunes was just the start of what turned out to be a hugely successful event. Thousands turned up for the switch-on – we’ve never seen so many in the Square – and they were entertained by a fantastic line-up of local talent

Christmas officially started in the city centre with a fantastic lights switch-on event which saw thousands pack into Cathedral Square. ESP’s Mikey Clarke reports on the big day… including the Rock Choir, Lexie Green and The Nuggetts. Actors from The Broadway’s musical Scrooge and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat also got involved to make it a really memorable and eventful day. If that’s not enough, Santa also showed up. Despite being at Serpentine Green on Thursday and Queensgate on Friday, Father Christmas was able to find the energy to attend. After the countdown and firework display, I caught up with a few local people in the crowd to get their views on the day. Janine Boome (44) from Market Deeping was with her two children. “The kids have had a great day,” she said. “Apart from the cost of the bus journey, it’s been a free day out. I can’t complain.”
Finally, I grabbed a moment with Lesley Barrett (35). Lesley explained, “The fireworks were a lovely touch. My daughter and I weren’t able to make a firework display this year so it was nice seeing them. The lights are great too.” I have to agree with Lesley. The lights do look amazing. Well done to Peterborough City Council. Now get yourself into town on a Thursday or Friday night (late night shopping) and take full advantage of the view. If you weren’t able to make it into town for the switch-on, head to www.espmag.co.uk and check out our video footage and coverage of the day.
PEPPA POPS IN TO LIGHT UP QUEENSGATE Everyone’s favourite cartoon character stole the show at the Queensgate lights switch-on event which saw its biggest crowd ever! Heart FM’s Jay-Louise Knight hosted the event which saw shoppers cram into the centre to watch Peppa press the plunger and illuminate their amazing decorations.
On Success! We’re seeing a bit of a nod towards a Strictly theme in the pink glitterballs and together with the flashing lights and snowflakes there’s no denying Queensgate looks set for the festive shopathon. The Thorpe Hall team also joined in the fun as Sue Ryder is the centre’s charity of the year as they look to raise £6 million for a new hospice. Santa also helped out before officially settling into his Grotto which is now open just outside John Lewis in North Square so book little shoppers in for an early Christmas present or photo with Father Christmas, for £4.50 each.
In the run up to the big day, Queensgate will also open an extra hour every Saturday until 7pm, and will remain open until 8pm on Saturday December 21. For all those last minute shoppers, the centre will be open from 8am – 8pm on December 23 and 8am – 5pm on December 24. Were you there? See if you can spot yourself in our Paparazzi pages.

So as the gift buying frenzy reaches a climax you’ll be pleased to hear that Queensgate has extended its opening hours from December 2 through to December 23, the centre will be open until 9pm and enjoy free parking weeknights after 5.30pm (Free parking valid from 5.30pm until 11.30pm from December 2 until December 23).

GO GREEN TO GET THE GREEN LIGHT According to a survey I read in The Sun (never believe what you read) girls prefer men with ecofriendly cars rather than gas-guzzlers. This means Nissan Leaf instead of a BMW M3. Of course, girls prefer men with a zero bank balance and small genitals too.
HAPPY 15th BIRTHDAY ESP! So, ESP Magazine is 15 years-old this month and it’s hard to believe I’ve been writing my column for more than 14 of those years. I remember turning down regular spots in Esquire and GQ magazines because I wanted to keep my writing real and local. Over the years I’ve entertained, wound up and made famous dozens of city folk and it’s all thanks to the opportunity I was given to express myself. ESP has provided me with a platform to share everything that’s good (and sometimes not so good) about our city. I possess the same passion for Peterborough and values as the magazine and respect the vision and journey it continues to make in sharing this with its readers.
XMAS GIFTS AT BALDERSTON Santa (he looks familiar) swung by the Balderston showroom in Hampton and spread his festive cheer with a range of vouchers that can be redeemed for gift bags and a whole load of other goodies this Christmas. This means you can buy vouchers for that keen motorcyclist you know and spend as much or as little as you like. But be quick, they’re flying out the door. You’ve got until Saturday December 21, which is the crew’s last day before a well-earned Christmas and New Year break. Balderston are back open for business on Thursday January 2. Season’s greetings to all the guys and roll on March when I get to throw my leg over BMW’s new models for 2014.

I can’t think of another local magazine that’s been running for so long – and there aren’t many (I can think of one) columnists who’ve written consistently for so long either – but this isn’t about me. Put simply, ESP is the best magazine in the city. It’s created a strong, trustworthy brand and built a sterling reputation for excellence and consistency. None of this has happened overnight. ESP is a small family-run business that’s not been without its challenges but always managed to keep its head above water. Dozens of contributors, photographers and fly-by-night advertisers have come and gone but in recent years ESP has gained the stability it rightfully deserves. The team is like a family and it’s this family ethos that’ll help to ensure continued success for another 15 years. Much of my work over these years has been something of an autobiography. I started writing for ESP in my early 20s and captured an audience that’s grown up with me, my drivel and the changes in my life as well as the magazine’s make-up. Like any successful business, ESP had to know when to stick or twist to keep ahead of changes in technology and our tender economy. The magazine was pioneering in many ways. It gave voice to young writers on the first step of their career ladders and it brought to life in full colour what Peterborough was doing socially and what businesses were doing in terms of innovation. It was also the first to capture the city’s night-time economy on camera. Our popular Paparazzi pages were brought to readers by yours truly. I remember being handed a digital camera (rare in those days) that cost more than the car I was driving at the time. My job was to capture my hobby, which back then was drifting from bar to bar and club to club chatting, putting the world to rights and of course adding to the contacts in my little black book. I can’t remember anyone taking a camera out with them during those early days. When I walked into a bar waving that lens around everyone went mad for a photo. Bar owners would comp me just to get a photo and a mention and DJ’s would announce me as being ‘in da house’. Today of course people (mainly girls) carry cameras as an essential item like lip gloss and a purse. Soon social cameras will be diluted completely by the smart phone and go into extinction. I’m proud to have been there creating the beginning. Buon compleanno ESP.

SHOWCASING OUR OWN CELEBRITIES This year’s Christmas lights switch-on event in Cathedral Square was the best I can remember and it was certainly the busiest with more people turning out for it than ever before. Most if not all of the thousands who stood in the cold to watch the six hour long event were aware that no celebrity had been lined up to turn the lights on (I was approached but was otherwise engaged) but still they came. This is because the majority of acts – including the excellent Joseph choir who performed just before the lights flicked on – were local. And for those of us who like to call Peterborough home, there’s no better
backdrop than a stage in the middle of Cathedral Square on the busiest day of the year to showcase and support the homegrown talent we have. Mums, dads, brothers, sisters, boyfriends and girlfriends all came out in support of their performing loved ones and many of them contributed to the local economy as they poured into nearby restaurants that evening. No celebrity switching the lights on pales into insignificance when in reality there were plenty of celebrities in the making that night. Well done to everyone who took to the stage (not forgetting Heart FM’s Kev and Ros) and thumbs up to Peterborough City Council for putting on a fabulous event that every year marks the official countdown to Christmas.

There are several attributes that make a hero and we all define heroes in different ways. Heroes can be described as people who are admired for their outstanding achievements. They have conquered, possess courage, patience and are visionary. These are the qualities Sharon McAllister has had to master in her role as editor of this magazine. ESP is 15 years-old, which in itself is already a heroic effort. There’s been plenty of highs and lows during this time and Sharon has had to persist in driving forward when on occasion she’s probably asked herself: Is it worth it? Sharon, yes it has been worth it. When times are good we all look for a hero to
embrace and bask in the glory with. When times are not so good we seek out for leadership, dedication and determination. Sharon’s been a hero throughout my time with the magazine. I’ve celebrated with Sharon and been inspired by her. Recession has hit lots of small business and publications but ESP has kept going while other magazines have fell by the wayside. Sharon has fought the claws of recession but I know she takes nothing for granted. ESP’s clients have come and gone, its writers have ducked in and out but underneath 15 years of change lies 15 years of a genuine passion for Peterborough, which Sharon has in abundance. That’s why more than anything she’s a hero in my book (or column to be precise).

It’s panto time, oh yes it is, and Peterborough boasts two fabulous productions each with their own unique appeal. Why go to just one panto when you can go to two! ESP gets the lowdown on Cinderella and Beauty And The Beast…
BEAUTY & THE BEAST @ THE CRESSET The Cresset pantomimes have proved a hit for years and are on a larger scale featuring a few famous faces. This year’s production of Beauty & The Beast sees the return of former Eastenders star Ricky Groves along with Jackie Travers from Big Brother 2013 and TV gadget guru David McClelland. They’re always good value shows and a great night out for all the family packed with music, dance and plenty of fun! ESP’s Alex Jones caught up with Ricky Groves who stars as Silly Billy to find out more… So what does it take to be a great comedy pantomime character?
“So I thought, longevity being the key for a successful soap character, adding a comic twist to the character would be a good move. It added a bit of light to the dark. I mean they started to really lay it on thick when they partnered me up with Cliff Parisi (Minty) and we played the odd couple really!”
“I’m still learning, I think we’re all learning really. Luckily our director John Newman has been doing this for years and knows exactly what’s required for a successful show. It’s for the kids primarily so we need to focus on entertaining them first but of course we slip in one or two jokes that are universally funny. “You’ve got to hit all the right notes really, once you’re up and running it’s good to have a smooth running show where all your jokes are well rehearsed but of course sometimes the fun comes out of when things go wrong! There’s been a few times when curtains and things have come down at wrong times and when that does happen you just have to think on your feet.”
What does panto mean to you and why should people see it? Comedy seems to have played a major part in your career so far. “I wouldn’t have said that straight away but yeah, I suppose you’re right really. It was never intentional to make Garry from Eastenders more comical but when I first got the part there were already a lot of heartthrobs and villain types.
“It’s part of Christmas really. Christmas time is here because the panto is here! People should come see it because I enjoy doing it and when I enjoy doing something people enjoy themselves.” Beauty & The Beast runs at the Cresset in Bretton from December 14 – 30. Box office: 01733 265705.
SCROOGE THE MUSICAL @ THE BROADWAY THEATRE OK so it’s not panto but this fabulous musical show is definitely a seasonal winner at The Broadway Theatre. Entertainer Tommy Steele has had a record-breaking London Palladium run with this stunning version of A Christmas Carol playing the miserly Scrooge! It’s a gift of a show and right on our doorstep so catch it while you can from Monday December 9 – Saturday December 14. The sets and costumes are incredible in this international smash hit which even includes special illusions created by the guy behind the magic effects in Harry Potter! Tommy told ESP – “This is one of the best shows I’ve ever done… and I’ve done a lot of shows. The music is fab and the set is amazing – not to mention the magic! Even after so many shows I have no idea how the ghosts appear on the stage. After one of my performances of Scrooge at the London Palladium, the manager came over to me and said that this is one of the only shows he’s witnessed where you don’t hear paper rustling from sweets wrappers and popcorn bags – it’s complete silence because the audience are so engrossed in the show.” Read Mikey Carke’s interview with Tommy on www.espmag.co.uk. To buy tickets call the box office on 01733 822225 or visit www.kenwright.com
Pick of the pantos… ALADDIN @ THE STAMFORD CORN EXCHANGE THEATRE
JACK AND THE BEANSTALK @ STAMFORD ARTS CENTRE
The enchanting pantomime Aladdin comes to Stamford, performed by local group, the Stamford Pantomime Players. Expect more than you could make a magic wish for, with dazzling costumes, a brilliant set and a real flavour of the family panto. Boo and hiss at Abanazer as he tries to steal the lamp so he can rule the world! Let’s hope Aladdin and his sidekicks can stop him in time... With great songs and silly humour it’s going to be a family favourite. Get on your magic carpet and head along! Aladdin runs from Saturday December 28 – Wednesday January 1. Tickets are priced at £9.50, £8.50 for concessions and £7.50 for children. Box office: 01780 766455.
We’re rooting for Jack as he goes on the adventure of his life at the Stamford Arts Centre! Watch Jack play the hero as he makes a dangerous journey up the beanstalk to Blunderbore’s castle and as he takes on Poison Ivy. Put together by Polka Dot Pantomimes, there’s great fun for all and you won’t have to sell a cow to see it! Ticket prices start at £12 for adults and £10 for children, with other concessions and family discounts available. It runs from Thursday January 9 – Sunday January 12. Box office: 01780 763203.
Which is the fairest panto of them all? It’s Snow White of course! A magical tale with fun, laughter, and most importantly, the wretched pantomime villain! This festive treat takes place at the South Holland Centre in Spalding from Thursday December 12 – Thursday January 2. Tickets are £13.50, £12.50 for concessions and £48 for a family ticket. CINDERELLA @ THE KEY
"On behalf of all of us at Serpentine Green Shopping Centre I would like to wish ESP a very happy birthday! It is a pleasure working with the team at ESP magazine. The Key Theatre panto is a tradition for most families in the city and has long been a Michael Cross production as it is this year. Michael starred as the dame for many years and continues to write and direct the shows which always have a distinctive Peterborough theme and bags of laughs. As it’s a smaller theatre The Key panto is a more intimate show so you can really feel a part of the action and even influence some of what happens on stage! Sharon McAllister caught up with Michael for the latest on this Christmas favourite… What makes The Key Theatre panto the one to see?
”
“The Key's great intimate auditorium is always the star attraction. Excellent viewing from every seat. The space always ensures that everyone is part of the action.” One of the great things about The Key panto is all the local references... can we expect more of the same? “Oh yes there will! That's the joy of working with local actors within the company.” Will there be any surprises?
Learning Disabilities / Mental Health Support Workers Required Are you looking for a rewarding career where every day gives you the opportunity to make a difference?
“Of course – but I can't tell you what they are!” Who makes the best dame – you in your heyday or the current one? “The Key has enjoyed a great line up of fantastic dames – going right back to the ones I remember as a young man – Allan Walsh and Chris Macdonnell. I was lucky to be part of that tradition. My successor, Patric Kearns continued that work beautifully and our ugly sisters this year – Joe Morrow and Simon Naylor – are creating a pair of wonderfully mean and funny sisters. I’m sure that audiences will enjoy them very much.” For those who think they don't like panto, what's your message to them? “Bring a child along and watch it through their eyes. It is a magical experience – and it can bring out the child in almost everyone.” Cinderella runs from December 5 – January 2. Book now on 01733 207239.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star... There's absolutely no wondering in this case who you are, because it’s the time of year to SPARKLE bright, you'll be nothing but centre stage at your festivities with what's on offer. Everywhere you go it’s hard not to find something with sparkle on, but worn tastefully you'll avoid looking like something that’s just fallen off the Christmas tree!
Dress – French Connection, £180
Christmas comes once a year and while you’re busy treating others, what better reason to give yourself a treat too with a statement outfit. French Connection in my opinion always blow me away with their party season looks. And this year my jaw quite literally hit the floor when my eyes clocked their long black sequin dress. Don't worry though if dresses aren’t your thing because their sequin leggings will keep you in the spotlight. Warehouse is always great for those little finds of classic cut dresses and this season they've thought of the cold nights too with this gorgeous black dress that has a removable top for when the mulled wine kicks in! I'm loving the flash of silver thread through the dress too to lift the whole outfit. There's no excuse for you guys not to stand out this season, not necessarily with sparkle but more with printed shirts or blazers. Step away from the traditional white shirt under a suit! Be the star of the party and get sparkling… "Like a diamond in the sky!” Natasha

courses is very reasonable and dishes that carry a supplement are clearly marked. The menu includes seasonal favourites such as thyme roast supreme of salmon, pan fried fillet of sea bass, roast butternut squash frittata and herb roast cannon of lamb.
e’ve been fortunate to see a big improvement in city centre dining options but The Bull hotel on Westgate remains a trusted venue whether it’s the main restaurant or Pastroudis bar.
W
This AA Rosette award-winning Brasserie restaurant is open to all, not just hotel guests, and has launched a fantastic new menu for the winter season. At the moment it’s proving perfect for dinner and a show at The Broadway but with its city centre location on Westgate it’s always well situated.
Pastroudis at the front of the hotel offers a mix of lighter dishes, sandwiches and sharing platters through to more substantial meals such as steak, ginger beer battered cod and Moroccan spiced lamb kebabs. During the day their generous afternoon teas are served between 3pm and 6pm, perfect to revive you during the Christmas shopping, and you have choice of traditional sweet or delicious savoury both at £10.95 or £6.50 for a simple cream tea. Here’s an idea – why not buy that difficult to buy for person a gift voucher treating them to an afternoon tea at The Bull hotel? There are of course plenty of festive specials available this month with traditional Christmas lunches, a family lunch with Santa and even Christmas and Boxing Day dinners so you can step away from the oven and let The Bull hotel team do the cooking for you!
You can expect quality food perfectly created by chef Jason who uses a huge range of local produce. Some of their local suppliers include, Fowlers Poultry, King’s Cliffe (free range eggs), Grasmere Farm, Market Deeping (all things porcine), Stilton Butchers (fresh meat and poultry) and Hamish Johnstone, Suffolk (cheese and deli produce). Even better, for dessert lovers they have their own pastry chef turning out some delicious treats every day! The Brasserie offers a delicious menu with real flexibility. The set price of £19.50 for two courses or £24.50 for three

Not that the competition is by any means in the bag, as the talent this year is strong and it could be anyone’s game. Our Strictly insider, Peterborough girl and Strictly band singer Hayley Sanderson agrees – “I adore Abbey” she says of model Abbey Clancy, “she’s so sweet and I love the fact she's not a performer as such by trade, yet she's doing wonderfully! Natalie (Gumede), Susanna and Sophie (Ellis- Bextor) are doing pretty amazing things too! Although the boys seem to be improving with speed at the mo!” Newsreaders have traditionally done well on Strictly, with Natasha Kaplinsky and Chris Hollins both winning the trophy and Susanna Reid’s copresenter, Bill Turnbull, finished in a none too shabby sixth place so Susanna must be feeling the

pressure – “Bill Turnbull will always be my absolute hero,” she says, “he was brilliant.”
Susanna first got the taste for Strictly when she competed in a special for Children in Need 2011, winning with her then partner Robin Windsor. But despite the fact that she and Kev make it look easy, Kevin’s revealed that Susanna is far from the perfect pupil. “Because Susanna does such a good job on a Saturday and really comes out on fire, most people assume she is a bit of a natural at it and she gets it straight away. It couldn’t be further from the truth.” Emerging as firm friends during this series, Kev’s even taken Susanna back to his parents’ dance studio in, where else, Grimsby to meet his family and see where it all began for him. Susanna’s also revealed how close she’s become to the other contestants, particularly Corrie actress Natalie Gumede who she’s quick to defend against a backlash of claims that she has an unfair advantage due to her previous dance training. "We all train at different levels,” she says, “and we all have different amounts of time. Natalie throws everything at it. She works exceptionally hard and is incredible. Dave Myers got criticised because he wasn’t a good enough dancer. Natalie gets criticised because she’s too good.”
Noble sentiments Suze, but we Brits love an underdog and any whiff of ‘unfair advantage’ and we’ll be taking our dialling fingers and voting elsewhere – just ask last year’s runner up Denise Van Outen. Mind you, Denise was up against Peterborough’s finest, Olympic hero Louis Smith so, advantage or no advantage, there was always going to be only one winner. Biased? Us? Either way, with no local boy for us to put our considerable ESP weight behind, we can kick back, open yet another tin of Celebrations that we’d vowed not to open until Christmas Eve and wish a heartfelt ‘Good Luck’ to all the remaining contestants confident that, until Christmas Eve at least, Saturday night TV is in safe hands. Even if they are Sir Brucie’s.
Sarah and Louis
LOUIS LOVES STRICTLY No Strictly Come Dancing feature would be complete without a quick catch up with last year’s champion, Peterborough’s very own Louis Smith... So Louis how has your year been since you were crowned Strictly champ? “It's been good! I can't believe it's been a year already with so much going on. I've had a really good time working on various exciting projects but I definitely still miss being on the show!” Have you danced since the tour (other than on the opener of the new series)? “Well if you don't include in nightclubs or around the kitchen then not too much. I'm really excited to have a couple of corporate events with Flavia coming up in December though so we'll be training for those soon which I can't wait for.” Are you watching this series and if so who have been your favourites and who do you think will win? “Yep I've been watching and it's great to see them all doing so well and
enjoying it as much as I did. Natalie's brilliant but the competition is really strong so there's a few who could win it.” What advice would you give this year's contestants? “Just to enjoy it to the fullest. It's such an amazing thing to be a part of and it was without a doubt the best time of my life so they should just enjoy it while it lasts!” How will you spend Christmas and what's next for you career wise? “I'll spend it at home with my family which I'm looking forward to as always. We've got some really exciting projects on the horizon in 2014 so watch this space as there will hopefully be some announcements coming in the not too distant future!” Read our full interviews with Louis and Strictly singer Haley Sanderson on www.espmag.co.uk

t wasn’t so long ago that it could be argued that the best things to come out of Grimsby were “Ooh Betty” from Some Mothers Do ’Ave ’Em and the A16 to Skeggy. But all that changed when this year’s Strictly Come Dancing was launched and on to our screens waltzed (and tangoed, salsad etc) new professional dancer Kevin Clifton. Or to give him his proper name, by which he shall always now be known, ‘Kevin from Grimsby’ (imaginative eh?).

Voice cast: Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, Idina Menzel Directors: Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee With Christmas around the corner, Frozen was the obvious choice to adorn these pages in the run-up to the festive season. After the likes of Wreck-it Ralph and Tangled, Disney have finally shown they can stand on their own two feet when it comes to modern day animation – with their latest in-house films showing they can compete with the company-owned Pixar.
The early reviews have been pretty good for this relatively ‘big name-free’ outing which sees fearless optimist Anna (Kristen Bell) try to find Snow Queen Elsa (Idina Menzel) to put an end to an icy spell which traps a kingdom in eternal winter. With mountain man Kristoff, his sidekick reindeer Sven, and comedic snowman Olaf in support – this should be the perfect family ticket when it’s frosty outside . . .

Legendary San Diego newsman Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) and his Channel 4 team of Brick Tamland (Steve Carell), Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd) and Champ Kind (David Koechner) move into the eighties for this comedy sequel. After the group disbands and hit rock bottom,

Tom Hanks stars as Walt Disney in this comedy drama, which sees him struggle to keep a promise he made to his daughters – making their favourite book, Mary Poppins, into a movie. It takes the House of Mouse’s creator all his concerted efforts to convince the author PL Travers (Emma Thompson) that it should receive the Hollywood treatment – catchy songs included.

Spike Lee takes on this remake of the cult South Korean film – as Josh Brolin’s Joe Douchette is imprisoned for twenty years for no apparent reason. When he’s suddenly released without explanation, he begins an obsessive mission to find out who imprisoned him, only to discover the real mystery is why he was set free. Co-stars Samuel L Jackson and Sharlto Copley.
David O Russell re-teams with his Oscar winning and nominated stars of The Silver Linings Playbook, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, in this crime-drama. When Christian Bale’s conman and partner (Amy Adams) are forced by an FBI agent (Cooper) to work for them – they’re pushed into the underworld of the New Jersey Mafia where the stakes could mean life or death.

THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY Released: December 26 Ben Stiller looks to get his career back on track after a few box-office stumbles, and hopes this remake – which he also directs – of the much-loved 1947 original will fit the bill. He stars as a day-dreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action across the globe. He stars as a nomadic sword-wielding warrior who joins a team of 47 outcast samurai seeking vengeance for the death of their master to restore honour to their homeland.

ARKHAM ORIGINS (360/PS3/WIIU/PC) Family shoots just
Familiarity doesn’t breed contempt in the Dark Knight’s latest outing – which is gleefully more of the same. You could argue it does seem at times a glorified DLC add-on to the last game, but that would be doing new developers WB Games Montreal a disservice as a rookie Caped Crusader takes on pre-Arkham Gotham City criminals – with Black Mask’s $50 million bounty on his head.
#####
£30!
And despite the slight lack of polish, the new fast travel and improved detective modes add to the tried-and-tested Batman Arkham combat formula. If it ain’t broke?
BATTLEFIELD 4 (PS3/360/PC) OUT NOW DICE’s award-winning franchise continues to push the boundaries of what a shooter game should be – and produces arguably the complete multiplayer experience. The single-player campaign should be more substantial, and the size of the online maps are probably TOO big – but with the use of the Frostbite 3 engine environments have never been so dynamically effective.
#####
Throw in a terrific Commander Mode and impressive new multiplayer tweaks – the great things clearly outnumber the minor flaws.
ASSASSIN’S CREED IV: BLACK FLAG (WIIU/360/PS3/PC) OUT NOW Fortunately this is the Black Pearl and not the Dead Man’s Chest of the pirating gaming world – as the franchise walks the plank in the Caribbean. It might not actually better last year’s third (or fifth?) instalment – as your journey takes you from brash captain to a master assassin during the Golden Age of Piracy – but takes the major open world (and sailing) facets to provide another solid adventure.
#####
Again this revolves more than evolves, but this is still an epic swashbuckler. Yo, ho, ho – it’s a pirate’s life for me...

CALL OF DUTY: GHOSTS (360/PS3/WIIU/PC) OUT NOW
Just like with the aforementioned Battlefield, if you’re a gamer you’ve probably already chosen your poison – and if it’s of the COD variety this is well worth frying. Infinity Ward have shook up the single-player shooter campaign – which even leaves you descending to outer space – but the still-seasoned multiplayer (like Battlefield) is unnecessarily hampered by massive maps that are overly complex.
#####
But with improved team modes – coupled with a much needed change of scenery story-wise – this is undoubtedly one of the franchise’s best iterations yet.
WWE 2K14 (PS3/360) OUT NOW 2K Sports’ line-up is now ‘Showcase to the Immortals’ – as it aims to do the same with WWE as it did with its award-winning NBA franchise. After THQ got a GTS, 2K have picked up the pieces and built on fairly solid foundations to satisfy new and old fans – climaxing with the epic 30 Years of Wrestlemania mode.
#####
It’s slick, fluid and offers a strong campaign mode – despite some still poor AI and minor flaws – and most importantly The Shield. In the words of Daniel Bryan ‘Yes, Yes, Yes’.
LEGO MARVEL SUPER HEROES (WIIU/360/PS3/PC) OUT NOW
LEGO games keeps building, waiting to be knocked down – but they just can’t be. Even new ‘big’ Lego characters like Hulk, Thing and Juggernaut can’t smash this franchise to the ground, as this latest adventure offers the best version yet – and best Marvel game in many a year.
#####
With such a massive character roster from Iron Man to Captain Britain this only suffers from samey-ness – but even that is still so bloody infectious.

DEADFALL ADVENTURES (360/PC) Despite teasing something that crosses Tomb Raider with Uncharted this action-adventure sadly has an unfinished feel. The niggly controls and clichéd story frustratingly dominate some solid puzzle and location foundations that make it just about worth a look if you’re the adventuring type.

But sadly this Quatermain-inspired offering is more Sahara than Indiana Jones – and probably should’ve been left there.

should be on the ultra-nice list,” he said. “She’s the nicest woman in the world… apart from my Mum.” Despite James Arthur being negatively mentioned in the press a lot lately, Rylan insisted – “He should be on the nice list. James gets a hard time. Many comments made about him are lies.” And finally, I asked if he deserved to be on the nice list himself. The look on his face implied that maybe he shouldn’t be. Watch the footage on www.espmag.co.uk by ESP’s video reporter Lorenzo Monteforte. This was not Rylan’s first trip to Peterborough, the Big Brother contestant told me, “I’ve been here a couple of times. Everyone has always been lovely to me so it’s great to be back. It’s been a great turn out, and I want everyone to know that by coming to see me perform, they’ve all made it onto the nice list.”

undreds of local people headed to Serpentine Green recently for the Christmas light switch-on and to spot celebrity guest Rylan Clark. I was able to get access to all areas during the Hampton event, as (between you and me) I was Santa’s stand in that evening. Father Christmas was not able to attend and asked if I’d fill in for the night at the Grotto. This gave me the perfect opportunity to roam around the centre and even talk to X-Factor star, Rylan Clark, who performed tracks from his forthcoming album. During ESP’s exclusive chat with the singer, I asked him (as Santa) whether his former mentor, Nicole Scherzinger, should be on the naughty or nice list. “She
There was a fantastic line-up of local talent entertaining the crowds in the lead up to the big switch on with Heart FM’s breakfast show team, Kev & Ros doing the big build up to Rylan’s appearance. Also attending the popular event were footballers Jack Payne and Danny Swanson from Peterborough United as well as some of the stars from this year's Cresset Panto, Beauty and the Beast – including former Eastenders star Ricky Groves and Jackie Travers from Big Brother. If you were unable to attend the event, get yourself to Hampton as soon as possible. The lights look stunning and there are some great new stores. Outfit has all the names under one roof including Dorothy Perkins, Burton and Evans plus it’s free parking! If you were there, look out for yourself in our pictures.
What’s on at Serpentine Green FESTIVE FUN @ SERPENTINE GREEN As well as loads of great stores to shop in there’s also plenty of extra weekend entertainment at the centre in the lead up to Christmas.
MEET SANTA IN THE GROTTO Take the kids along to hand their Christmas list direct to Santa himself ahead of the big day at the Serpentine Green Grotto. Situated just outside Outfit it’s £5 entry which includes a gift of course, with all proceeds going to the charity, RNIB. It’s open from 10am – 4pm every weekend in the lead up to December and then open every day up to and including Christmas Eve.
On Saturday November 30 near the Grotto there’s a craft workshop to make a giant Christmas card plus the kids can make decorations to take home. On Saturday December 7 there’s tasty fun with an edible Christmas decoration workshop to decorate gingerbread men or a bauble biscuit to hang on your tree. Then Christmas comes to life on Sunday December 8 with real reindeer at the shopping centre, they’ll be just outside the north entrance doors (that’s the Outfit entrance) and you’ll find the Grotto just inside. That should keep the kids happy on that shopping trip for the Christmas goodies!
MEET BJORN THE POLAR BEAR!
LATE NIGHT OPENING
This show will definitely wow big and small kids alike! If you fancy meeting a lifelike polar bear you can interact with, this show is a combination of petting zoo and nature documentary! It’s based entirely on physical interaction with the audience gathered around the performance space. Their Arctic Conservationist introduces each show with a brief explanation of where polar bears live and how they survive in the wild. Then you get the chance to interact with Bjorn, who’s happy to be patted and stroked and can be quite playful! Audience members can ask questions and share their facts about Arctic wildlife. This unique performance sounds a great experience and it’s free to watch so make sure you head to the Serpentine Green food court on Sunday December 15 and there’ll be shows at 12pm, 2pm and 3pm.
Serpentine Green is always open late but with the big run up to Christmas and all those gifts you need to buy, the centre will be open even longer from Monday December 16 when stores will be open from 9am – 9pm every day. Those extra few hours will prove invaluable we’re sure and should help relieve the pressure of what to buy the inlaws!

PLUG IN GREEN WHEELS AT QUEENSGATE Photo: Emma Bothamley
I’m a self-confessed petrol head and struggling with the whole electric vehicle malarkey but top marks to Queensgate shopping centre for unveiling six, free to use new electric vehicle (EV) car charging points, which are located in their Green car park on level three. This means green-minded shoppers can plug their vehicles in to recharge while they do their shopping. Payment is at the usual payment points and motorists just need to disconnect from the terminal to drive away. The Evolt Multipoint installation marks the next step in Queensgate’s green initiatives, which have already led to numerous awards for the centre. Earlier this year Queensgate was awarded with a prestigious Green Apple award,
commending it for on-going dedication to lowering overall energy consumption. Queensgate was also shortlisted in June for the ‘Energy Management Award of the Year’ at the National Sceptre Awards. Carol Wakelin, Environmental Coordinator at Queensgate, told ESP – “Adding the electric vehicle charging stations was the next logical step and we hope that by offering the chance to charge your car for free, we will encourage our shoppers to think a little greener, while enjoying a day at the shops.” Visit www.queensgate-shopping.co.uk for more info. MOTORPOINT SPREADS CHRISTMAS CHEER It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas at Motorpoint in Fengate with manager Lee Arnold donating £500 to spend on presents for locally disadvantaged children this festive season. Lee and his team will be delivering presents on Christmas Eve to local charities that support children and customers are being asked to donate gifts also. Motorpoint are spreading even more festive cheer by giving people the chance to win a pair of tickets in a prize draw to see a show of their choice at the Motorpoint Sheffield Arena.
Peterborough City Council's Trading Standards Team, The Trading Standards Institute (TSI) and Peterborough Citizens Advice Bureau launched a campaign warning people of the potential issues that could arise when buying a used car. A 'clocked' car was displayed in Queensgate, illustrating how potential buyers can be conned into believing a vehicle is newer than it is. People were also given tips and advice on how to avoid the pitfalls when buying a second-hand car. Peter Stonely, Principal Trading Standards Officer from Peterborough City Council, told ESP – “It’s important the used car industry puts the brakes on bad practices by ensuring dealers are being up front with their customers about the condition of cars. That way people can make an informed choice as to whether the vehicle they see is the car for them.” Too right. Even someone as car savvy as me has been stitched up by a gift of the gab salesman. Time to name and shame: if you’re ever in Plymouth and decide to buy a car from Vospers, talk to me first! Here are some top tips when considering buying a used car: • Check service history – does the car have an up-to-date service record? • Check V5 registration document – if the seller doesn’t have this, walk away • Check the MOT (if it’s relevant) – visit www.gov.uk and use the 'check the MOT option' – you’ll need the car's registration and its document reference number from the V5 • Check if car is a write-off – you can do this on www.hpicheck.com – cars that have been economically written-off can be re-sold but you may not want to buy one • Check finance history – you can also do this through an hpi check – make sure there’s no finance outstanding on the car, if there is the finance company involved could take the car off you • Test drive and give the car a walk around checking for any signs the car isn’t what it seems
There’s something for everyone at the Arena from the Strictly Come Dancing tour and Gary Barlow to Black Sabbath and Justin Timberlake. There are 10 pairs to give away, so plenty of chances to win!
• Get an engineer to check – if you don’t know much about cars consider employing an engineer to check it over for you
All you have to do is visit www.motorpoint.co.uk – go to their Facebook page and Twitter feed and tag this photo of Lee and I posing in the Fiesta. And if you see the Fiesta out and about, take a photo of it, stick it on Facebook and tag it.
• Check price value guide – are you about to pay too much? If the car is cheap could this be a sign it isn't what it seems?
The Motorpoint team will be hard at work every day over the festive period excluding Christmas Day and Boxing Day, while the rest of us are rushing around doing our Christmas shopping and enjoying some holiday season time off. That’s customer commitment for you! Merry Christmas guys. Pep Cipriano

HAPPY 15th BIRTHDAY ESP
“All of us at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice are really grateful for the fantastic support we’ve received from ESP over many years. Their continued support means so much to us and the major promotion of appeals and events like Glamour Galore and Starlight Hike makes such a difference to our fundraising. And it’s not just the major events. Regular mentions of all our fundraising efforts and the loan of the Face of ESP for events are just as valuable to us. Thank you, ESP. Keep up the good work!” Jackie Page, Fundraiser.

ESP’s nutritionist and life coach Karen Devine looks at how to get the best out of your year ahead... As we enter the last month of the year we start to get more reflective than at any other time. We consider what we’ve gained and what we’ve lost, from our weight, to relationships, friendships, habits, career and finances. Earlier this year I set personal and professional goals, not only did I set them I reviewed them almost daily to check in with myself to see if I was still on track. This year I completed my life coaching course as well as further nutritional education which I’d set out and reached some personal goals too. Had I not written them down and checked in with them and kept my focus on them some would have been long forgotten. Before you get thrown into the party season and lost in your Christmas spirit, take time to think about what you would like to be, do or have during this next 12 months. Write down
some small goals as well as some bigger goals and put them where you can see them every day. Here are some tips to help you to clear the way to be able to have a focus for your year ahead: • Finish off what you’ve been putting off. Either we avoid certain things due to fear of looking at it face on, or that it seems too big a task. Ignoring it is a real energy drain and has an energy block for you moving forward with new plans and goals. • Stop hanging onto your ex. They are called your ‘ex’ for a reason, they have exited your life and when you can see the lesson in that relationship and fully find a place in your heart for its teachings you can begin to breathe new energy into your cells ready to enjoy life again.
• Let go of the past – it’s gone, ended, moved on and now you have a future to create. If you are constantly looking at what is, was or wasn’t then you are not in alignment with what you want to create for your tomorrow. That’s not to say do not honour the past, but if it’s stopping you living your life completely then it’s time to let go. • Clear your facebook, twitter, phone or other techno platform you use of old acquaintances, ex partners or even friends that no longer serve you. Life is a cycle, it is dynamic and forever moving, nothing stays the same, you are not the same person you were when you were 7, 14, 21 or when you were at school or in your first job. As you change, new people come into your life. You become the tribe you hang out with so are you happy with who you
”
hang out with? If not change it or plan out how you can limit it.
• Write a list of everything and everyone you enjoy being around, or those who really inspire you, extend that list to things that you love, people you love, places you love. Once you’ve finished that list I guarantee you will feel a lift in your vibration and energy. It’s then that you’ll receive a flow of thoughts and inspiration for your year ahead. Have a healthy, fun and happy Christmas. If you want to join me in my workshops on taking you from tired to inspired drop me an email for more details. Karen x www.karendevine.co.uk

It’s beginning to look a lot like
Christmas... Festive fun as voted for by you!
Office Christmas Quiz
For me, Christmas is about walking around town on a Thursday or Friday night (late night shopping) whilst taking in the beautiful lights and drinking a hot gingerbread latte.
The festive season is about being merry. Surely you can put aside work for a little while to participate in some festive fun? Why not gather your workmates together and give our ESP Christmas Quiz a go. Check out the bottom of this page for the answers.
When I attended the city centre’s Christmas lights switch-on I asked some of the crowd what gets them feeling festive. Donna Burrows (62) from Whittlesey told me, “Taking the grandkid’s to Nene Valley Railway’s Santa Special has become a Christmas tradition. The kids get to see Santa, eat sweets and mince pies, whilst I sit back with a nice glass of wine.” This festive experience runs from December 1 – 24. Booking is essential. Phone 01780 782833 or 01780 784444 between 9.30am and 3.30pm or visit www.nvr.org.uk/events/santa-special Eric Jackson (49) said, “I don’t visit the Peterborough Cathedral as much as I should do. But I do visit it every Christmas. It makes me feel very Christmassy.” There’s plenty happening at the Cathedral this December. For example, there’s a Pre School Christmas Nativity Service on Friday, December 13, at 12 noon. This one-hour service is open to everyone, particularly pre-school children. Or why not try the traditional Christingle Service on Saturday, December 14, 3pm. This is the Cathedral’s annual service for young children and families and includes seasonal readings, carols and music performed by local school children.

It’s a busy time of year for Santa. The jolly man can also be seen at Sacrewell Farm. Bethany Hooper (30) from Bretton explained, “I took the family to Sacrewell last December and was happy to see what an effort they’d made. I took my daughter on a sleigh ride, and we got to see a nativity scene featuring real animals. It was magical.” The farm’s going all out once again this year. Kids say the craziest things! Santa is obviously at his busiest throughout November and December. The big jolly man called me up to ask if I’d pretend to be him at Serpentine Green recently. On this day, the shopping centre had their Christmas light switch-on – and unfortunately, Santa was too busy to attend. For around five hours I was playing Santa in the grotto. During that time I spoke to hundreds of children. I soon realised that children are very funny – you never know what they’re going to say. Below is a few of the comments I received from some local youngsters… Gary (6) explained to me that, "The three wise men brought Jesus Gold, Frankenstein and Myrrh." When asked what he would have got Jesus, he took a moment to think and replied, “Lego.” I couldn’t contain my laughter when Tracey (4) asked, “Do you have to clean up the reindeer’s poo? Do you carry bags around with you?” Stuart (6) also seemed concerned about me (Santa) leaving a mess. He explained, “Dad will be putting newspaper next to the chimney for your muddy boots. Mum doesn’t like it when we get dirt on the carpet." 1. Jacob Marley 2. Holiday Inn 3. Ladies dancing 4. White 5. Dr Seuss 6. Panettone 7. Oliver Cromwell 8. Capricorn 9. George Bailey (played by James Stewart) 10. Mary's Boy Child 11. 1085 metres

When I asked Erin (5) if she’d been a good girl this year, she looked nervous. “I have been a good girl. Mum said that I have been a little naughty this year. She’s lying,” she said. I have to say I was impressed with Luke’s (5) negotiating skills. “I’m better behaved than my sister. Can I have more presents than her?” he asked. The Serpentine Green grotto is open from Saturday November 30 and running every day until Tuesday December 24, 10am – 4pm. All money made at the grotto will be going to local charity RNIB. The charity’s looking for outgoing, enthusiastic and motivated individuals to play the part of Santa and Santa’s little helpers. Having been Santa myself, I highly recommend you give it a go. For more details about volunteering please email Emma at emma.long@rnib.org.uk or call 07908 574729. Mikey Clarke

HAVE YOURSELF A SILLY LITTLE CHRISTMAS
THE CRESSET COMEDY CLUB
S
1. The Radio Times revealing in 2011 the Top 50 Christmas Films of all time as voted for by readers but not having National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation anywhere in the Top 50. (This was despite Empire Magazine placing the film in 6th place in a poll voted for by their readers). 2. The Radio Times excluding it from the list of Top 50 films people were able to vote for but including Jingle All the Way, a film that the Radio Times also rate as 2/5. 3. The Radio Times giving The Family Man a schmaltzy Christmassy Nicolas Cage film that's a direct rip-off of It's A Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol 3/5. It’s a film that couldn't be more disrespectful to the genius of Charles Dickens had Nicolas Cage dug up Dickens' grave, put his Hollywood hairpiece on the skull and posed for a photo. 4. The Radio Times including average action films with a very loose connection with Christmas, such as The Long Kiss Goodnight, and The Poseidon Adventure but not films like Lethal Weapon and Batman Returns 5. The Radio Times proudly announcing The Top 50 Christmas Films of all time but not divulging that only a meagre 2,882 people had voted in the competition! So, this year it's the TV Times all the way for me... who normally give it at least three or four stars and a far better review. Anyway Merry Christmas readers and a Happy New Year to one and all (although statistically speaking that's impossible – but it's the thought that counts).

SO COMEDY NIGHT
o it’s Christmas 2013 and on TV it's a blizzard of jingly, jangly bells, glittery accoutrements, and never ending shots of glazed hams and big puddings... but anyway, that's enough about Dave the hairy biker and Vanessa Feltz trying to dance on Strictly. We’ve got more important things to discuss. Like why we should be boycotting buying the bumper Christmas edition of the Radio Times and buy the TV Times instead. Why? In protest at the Radio Times giving arguably the funniest festive film EVER made ‘National Lampoons Christmas Vacation’ a miserly 2/5 stars in the film guide. Not just this year, either. For the last three, the scroogey mofo’s have consistently given it only two stars. Look up their review on the www.radiotimes.com and you’ll see that they dismiss one of the greatest yuletide movies as being 'silly in the extreme'. D’you know what Radio Times? I'll give you a list of things that are 'silly in the extreme'…

KEEP NEW YEAR’S EVE
LIVE AND LOUD!
As the Christmas and New Year break approaches, it’s time to give a big thanks to all the landlords, and staff of Peterborough pubs who not only help to bring us live music throughout the year but continue to do so in the holidays when the rest of us enjoy ourselves. Taking a look at the live bands that ESP have been notified of for New Year’s Eve, there’s live music in many areas of Peterborough all of which are very entertaining: In the city centre, The Rainmen play the North Street Bar whilst Charters features The Dizzy Miss Lizzys. In Werrington you can see the Be Bop A Lulas at The Cock Inn, Citizen Smith at The Ploughman and The One Eyed Cats at The Dragon. In Market Deeping Twenty4 are at The Stage, whilst The Overdubs can be seen at The London Inn in Stamford. In Eye, The Blue Boar brings you Hooker and over in Crowland, The Sound Injectors are at The British Legion Hall. I think that gives some really good choices for your New Year’s Eve if you fancy some live music to bring in 2014. There are even more in our Gig Guide on page 46 and for the very latest updates always check www.espmag.co.uk.
NEW BEGINNINGS FOR OPAQUE
After nearly four years in hibernation Peterborough based band Opaque are back with a brand new release appropriately called New Beginnings.
ourselves breaks to pursue other interests outside of music. This allows us to focus on Opaque with conviction when we do come together.
Having started back in 1999 they’ve toured for many years, gaining a strong fan base around the UK. They’ve supported big names like The Kooks, Kasabian, and Biffy Clyro as well as appearing at festivals across the UK and Europe and now Opaque are back with this new EP. New Beginnings is set for release in December through www.bandopaque/bandcamp.com.
“It feels great to be back and the response we’ve had has been overwhelming and quite humbling. We’re sold out of all tickets for our EP launch night at North Street on December 5 and are very excited and grateful to our friends and fans for their continued support.”
To launch the EP they’re appearing at North Street Bar on the release date, Thursday December 5. This date very quickly sold out, so it’s worth noting that the band’s also booked for a gig at Charters on the Town Bridge for Friday December 20. When asked why and where they’ve been for these missing years, songwriter and frontman Moony told ESP – “In order to keep it fresh and us enthusiastic we give
The New Beginnings EP shows a shift in the Opaque sound which has elements of gypsy swing, indie rock and acoustic folk music all entwined with heartfelt lyrics, catchy hooks and that theatrical delivery which has become Opaque's trademark. They’ve been away for too long so hopefully there’ll be many more chances to see Opaque in this area in the not too distant future. For more info go to www.bandopaque/bandcamp.com
GANGSTERS SKANK-A-TERIA The League of Mentalmen I am also looking forward to The League of Mentalmen’s reappearance at The Dragon in Werrington on Saturday December 21 – these guys never disappoint and are like nothing you’ve ever seen. Don’t miss them! Wherever you choose to go, please show a bit of appreciation for those working hard on the night. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Keith.
I hope, like me, that you enjoyed a great session from The Gangsters on Radio Peterborough. I invited them onto the Keith and Claire weekend show after seeing them perform during The Willow Festival, and they treated us to three great songs, in what is for them, an unusual environment. The band told me they have a big gig coming up on Saturday December 28. They are doing a Skank-A-Teria at the Radius from 8pm and are one of three acts featured on the night. The other two are Latino Sound and singer/songwriter Meg McPartlin. Sounds a perfect way to celebrate the Christmas/New Year break. Tickets are £5 each or £7 on the door, available from the Radius or the bands.
