residential which we feel is right for the over all scheme.” They’ve already had a great deal of interest in the remaining units from national and regional occupiers so let’s hope there are some exciting stores on the way!
NEW BAR @ BACCARA The site will also have space for 2-3 other developments including restaurants and two national chains are already interested. Spokesman Steve Hawkins from Barker Storey Matthews told ESP – “It’s good to see such positive developments in Peterborough. We’re still going through the planning process and the city council is being very helpful. There’s a real demand in this part of the city which at the moment is under supplied.”
NANDOS FOR CITY CENTRE
And so are we as it’ll not only provide another welcome addition to the dining out scene but will also create more than 30 new jobs. Nando's is the home of legendary, Portuguese flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken served in a warm, fun and vibrant atmosphere. Each of their restaurants are individually designed with unique features and this one will be on Cathedral Square with seating for 100 diners.
NEW HEALTH CLUB FOR HAMPTON Forget the doom and gloom it’s all happening here in Peterborough! Plans for a new health club in Hampton are said to be advancing well with an operator already lined up. Designs for the club which will include a 25m swimming pool are being finalised and if everything’s approved building work could start by the summer.

Fans of Nandos restaurants will be pleased to hear the famous chain looks set to open in the city centre this summer! In fact they’ve had their eye on Peterborough for around five years now but have been waiting for the right spot. A Nandos spokesman told ESP – “We’re in negotiations at present and it’s all looking very positive. We like to go where there’s a demand for Nandos and its clear people in the area are right behind us. We’re very excited.”
Planning consent’s been given to extend the former Baccara building on Broadway and a new bar operator has made a formal offer on the site. Spokesman Steve Hawkins from Barker Storey Matthews wouldn’t reveal who exactly, but told ESP it was a long term investment from a national name making an investment of around £3.25m in the new venue. The conservatory area will be replaced with a two storey extension including an upstairs terrace area so watch this space for more details as we get them!

NEW CENTRE @ HEMPSTED We could see work starting on some great new shops and a new neighbourhood centre at Hempsted within the next few months if the city council backs the plans this month. The £3million neighbourhood centre is part of a new housing estate between London Road and Drake Avenue. It includes plans for seven retail units in all, as well as 15 residential apartments above. Ben Sheppard of Sheppard Developments which has bought the site told ESP – “This is truly a mixed use scheme, and the neighbourhood centre represents a good mix of retail and

WHEN THE MUSIC STOPS THE PLOUGHMAN WINS CAMRA PUB OF THE YEAR! Congrats to the Ploughman in Werrington for winning CAMRA’s Pub Of The Year! You can help Andy the landlord and his regulars celebrate on February 23 when the guys from CAMRA will present them with their award. Andy and his brother Stuart have transformed the place from a keg-only pub into a hub for the community offering a great range of real ales. Several pubs in the area had received CAMRA Gold Awards, all for brewing the best local ales which have been brewed within 30 miles, and LocAle officer John Price told ESP the Werrington pub’s a deserving overall winner – “They’ve done a grand job, and we want people to recognise the pub as the great place it is today, and not what it was in 2009.”
If you’re single this is definitely the month to change that! The city’s newest cringe-free dating organisation When The Music Stops has been set up to help you meet and mingle through some great social events with more being added all the time. There’s a Valentine’s special at Halo in the city centre on February 14, speed dating at The Barn in Stamford on February 21 and then their unique quiz dating night on February 28 at Halo. Combining speeddating with a pub quiz, you’ll never struggle to think of an icebreaker and it helps you weed out both insufferable know-it-alls and the clueless! In March they’ll be launching their first night at Toscanini in Eye. For more info visit www.whenthemusicstops.com or call 0845 2303199.
Andy told ESP – “We’re totally overwhelmed with the support we’ve had from CAMRA and the local community. We’re overjoyed that Tesco have extended our lease too, which the locals are also very pleased with. Without our customers, we’d never be as successful as we are today.” There’s karaoke on Sundays and look out for another beer festival in July.
THE TALENT SEARCH IS ON Get your talent noticed at Peterborough Has Talent 2011 – any act and any age are welcome. Whether you’re a singer, a comedian, an MC, a dancer, gymnast or have any kind of talent at all, get yourself to the auditions at the Key Theatre on February 25, 27, and 28. It’s a great chance to get noticed and maybe even win a cash prize! The final show takes place at the Key Theatre on June 18 and all proceeds go to the Papworth Trust and the Mayor’s charities. To take part call 01733 864082.
WERE YOU THERE FOR THE BEAR? This year’s Straw Bear Festival in Whittlesey was another big success, with hundreds turning out to follow the bear. The weekend is an ancient tradition revived in Whittlesey and alongside the dancing straw bear there was live music, traditional molly and morris dancing and of course, plenty of drinking – ESP was there to catch the best of the action.
ENTER NOW FOR RACE FOR LIFE Race for Life is a massive success every year – and this time around it’s set to get even bigger. LIP SERVICE CHAT-UP LINE
pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk
A study by the world’s largest social dating network – www.badoo.com – has revealed women respond best to the chat-up line: “You have beautiful lips.” I’ll leave it there. If I type what I’m thinking it’ll get edited out. Women are obviously more sexually liberated than I thought…

hVALENTINE’S DAY – HOW ROMANTIC? Here we go again – February 14. Let me break it down for you: • She’s been hinting what you should do for her this Valentine’s since New Year’s Day. • You’re going to have to dip into your overdraft. • It isn’t reciprocal. In other words Valentine’s is all about her. • You spend £40 on roses and they’re dead after two days. • You buy her Thornton’s finest and she accuses you of trying to fatten her up so no-one else will have her. • You buy her an extortionately priced card when it’s cheaper to say ‘love you blah blah blah’ to her face. • You pay 25 per cent more for the same meal in the same restaurant you normally frequent. The extra is for Barry White CD background music, a plastic red rose on your table and the romance of sharing a restaurant with dozens of other table-for-two lovers. I’d rather thrust toothpicks into my testicles. • She might let you have sex that night for a change.
ARE YOU FUNDRAISING THIS FEBRU-HAIRY? Sue Ryder Care is once again challenging you to do something hairraisingly funny and raise money to help care for local people with lifechanging illnesses. The ‘Febru-hairy’ campaign is all about staging hairy fundraising events throughout February or just on the 18th – Sue Ryder’s ‘messy hair day.’ I’ll be doing my bit by skipping a back wax this month, meaning I’ll have enough to plait by March. I’m also contemplating growing a moustache similar to Daniel Day Lewis’ in Gangs Of New York.
CAUGHT IN THE ACT!
Andy Slater left home without applyin g make-up for a change.
You can raise cash and have fun doing it in lots of hairy ways such as: • Grow a ‘tache or beard for the month • Have a crazy hair / wig day • Get sponsored to dye your hair • Sponsor someone to wax their legs / chest / back / feet / arms / hands • Have a hairy look-alike competition (Jedward, Einstein or BA Baracus!)
Like the heading says, how romantic?
For more ideas and info on how to get involved visit www.suerydercare.org or better still give ESP’s Mikey Clarke (he works at Sue Ryder Care) a bell on 01733 330060.
DEFINITELY NO LICENCE TO THRILL FLAMAS MAKES WAY FOR NEW ITALIAN My thanks to Harlequin fancy dress and party shop in Fengate for telling me I look ‘great’ dressed as James Bond in his Moonraker space suit. I don’t remember 007 having to tuck his outfit into a pair of River Island boots or him ever sporting a Christmas hat.
This month will see a new contemporary-looking Italian restaurant open for business in Hampton Vale where South American eatery Flamas once was. The same owners are at the helm so expect the same good food and attention to detail.
Nor do I remember Bond villain Blofeld wearing a giant condom on his head or stroking a back-to-front Westie. Maybe the guys at Harlequin meant I looked ‘great’… for a laugh. But isn’t that what fancy dress is all about (I keep telling myself)?
FOOD FOR ALL AT JIMMY SPICES
Check out more photos (and fellow columnist Steve Gonzalez who inspired me to wear it) on the ‘Harlequin Fancy Dress Shop – Peterborough’ Facebook page.
Mattoni will be a restaurant serving authentic Italian stone-baked pizza and other delightful dishes from La Dolce Vita. As with many establishments today, it’ll have a separate wine and cocktail bar too. I’ll be scoffing there soon. In the meantime, good luck lads and please tell me you’ll be dishing up some ‘spaghetti aglio e olio’ for me?
More good news for food lovers is the opening (finally!) of Jimmy Spices where Praise used to be in the city centre. I popped in to grab a menu and it struck me how unique this place is. Basically, you and your friends need never debate what type of food to go out for again. Here you get Indian, Italian, Thai and Chinese all under one roof. Genius.
LEARN TO BIKESAFE AT BALDERSTON Here’s one for the bikers. There’s a free introductory talk by BikeSafe at the Balderston Motorcycle showroom in Hampton on February 16 at 6.30pm. BikeSafe is a police-led motorcycle road safety initiative that focuses on how to avoid collisions. Classroombased workshops by advanced police motorcyclists cover areas such as: attitude to risk, cornering, overtaking, filtering and group riding. Cambridgeshire Constabulary forensic collision investigators and advanced police motorcyclists, PC Peter Bimson and PC Simon Burgin, will host the evening.
MY WORD OF THE MONTH
Valentine
Not that I’m against the whole Valentine’s Day lark but: skint, rip-off, fake, proposal, pressure, sex, cheap, consumerism, rejection, babysitter, cringe, affair, overdraft, behaved, lurve, chocolates, asparagus (smelly wee) and oysters (bad guts).
Places are limited so book yours by calling TJ at Balderston on 01733 565470. See you there.

PERCEPTIVE THE BIG BUST-UP So Jordan and Alex Reid have finally called time on their brief marriage and split up – now there’s a shock, didn’t see that one coming (sarcasm). Apparently Jordan’s dumped him because he was a ‘whiner’ and had become ‘fame obsessed’. Blimey, wonder what grounds she’s citing in the divorce petition – irreconcilable similarities?

THE PLAICE TO BE When I was invited down to Appy Feet in Queen sgate for a pedicure, I thought – ‘why not, I could do with a bit of pampering’ – so imagine how I felt when I turned up and found out that my ‘treatment’ was to stick my size sixes into a fish tank, complete with over 100 fish swimming about! I nearly had heart failure! “No, honestly”, said Vanessa, from Appy Feet in a reassuring tone, “it’s incredibly therapeutic, not only will the fish gently nibble away at your dead skin but it’ll be a bit of a reflexology massage as the fish stimulate the foot’s acupuncture points.” I wasn’t convinced but with lots of curious looks from the numerous passers by, I decided I’d better be brave and take the plunge – literally! Tentatively I lowered my toes into the tank (after a quick foot wash – apparently I had dangerous levels of sock fluff and could have caused fish genocide, who needs that on their conscience? !) but I had visions of big, scary, hungry fish taking lumps out of me. I hones tly expected to have nothing left but bloody stumps below my knee when I lifted them out again whilst the fish swam around with expressions of ‘we’ll get the rest of you later’ on their fishy faces. But actually, nothing could be further from the truth. Once you get your head around the fact that your feet are being nibbled by fish, which should be wrong on every level, it’s actually quite pleasant as the fish are actually toothless. It feels ‘bubbly’, as one lady described it, like ‘putting your feet in a bucket of champagne’, or in my case, a bucket of Lambrini. Treatment over, my feet felt softer than they had in ages and, as promised, I felt really relaxed. “You often sleep really well after a treatment,” said Vanessa but having a 6-mon th-old with reflux, I knew there was fat chance of that! Actually, there’s a thought, maybe I should bring her with me next time – not that I’m desperate but anything that could make her sleep has got to be worth a go! Appy Feet is now open in Queen sgate, down near Michael John. Be brave and pop in next time you’re shopp ing, I dare you!

NEW AUDI
IS
A1
The new Audi A1 has been named the What Car? Car of the Year 2011 just twelve months after it won the Most Exciting Car of the Year…not bad going eh? The judges described the A1 as "the right car at the right time, combining desirability with ability” and the Audi premium hatch was dubbed "the ultimate downsizer's transportation" by the panel of What Car? journalists. Steve Fowler, Editor-in-Chief of What Car?, explained – "The Audi A1 is a brilliant car: brilliantly targeted and brilliantly
INBETWEENERS
revealed, they also aimed to stop off at the likes of Minge Lane, Titty Ho and Bell End along the way.
ON RUDE ROAD TRIP!
The foursome, also known as their alter-egos Will, Simon, Jay and Neil, did the tour of their risqué route in the classic yellow Fiat from the series, with the cameras rolling the entire time capturing all of the banter as they navigated their route to meet the 50 hour deadline.
As the nation prepares to do something funny for money for Red Nose Day 2011, The Inbetweeners lads are already on it... The cheeky chaps from hit TV show The Inbetweeners have been on a hilariously naughty Red Nose Day challenge travelling around the country to find the rudest and crudest named places possible! Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Blake Harrison – otherwise known as The Inbetweeners – challenged themselves to rack up 50 lewd locations in just 50 hours. Setting off from Bush Lane at 12pm on Tuesday January 18 and finishing at 2pm on Thursday January 20 at a rude London location to be
executed. More and more buyers are looking for smaller, more efficient cars, but with all the luxury trappings of much larger cars. That's exactly what Audi has given them – a super-stylish, high quality small car that's affordable and great fun, too." Prices for the A1 start at £13,420 OTR for the 1.2 TFSI (86PS) SE model, and rise to £18,665 for the 1.4 TFSI (122PS) S line model.
To show them your support, make a donation at www.comicrelief.com/inbetweeners or donate £1 by texting RUDE to 70011. You can see how the guys got on, with footage available to buy exclusively from iTunes (www.itunes.co.uk). The whole show will be available to download from February 3 – when Red Nose Day officially launches. The big day itself is on March 18.
PEUGEOT 3008’s A WINNER! There was success for Peugeot at the What Car? Awards with the Peugeot 3008 winning the Best Crossover of the Year 2011. Introduced in October 2009, the 3008 has proved a compelling all rounder with its clever blend of quality, practicality, comfort and interior space. With a host of useful driving aids including available features, like Grip Control, Dynamic Roll Control, Head-up Display, Distance Alert and automatic electric parking brake with Hill Assist, it continues to deliver a thoroughly modern driving experience. Commenting on the 3008’s award, Steve Fowler, Editor in Chief of What Car? said – “So, last year’s 'Car of the Year’ rules the roost yet again in the increasingly competitive Crossover category. The 3008 offers levels of class and comfort that rivals can’t match and, with the 1.6 THP engine under the bonnet, it’s great fun to drive, too.” This year’s seen the introduction of two new models – the SR and the special edition Envy – which offer extra levels of standard equipment, making the 3008 even more unbeatable for practicality and comfort.

VOODOO STANDS UP February 24
THE ESP th
138 ISSUE SPECTACULAR Hello, I'm Troy McClure. You may remember me from such TV network specials as The Simpsons's 138th Episode Spectacular, and the one where I married Marge's chain smoking sister Selma – but tonight we're here to honour Greater Peterborough's favourite A4-shaped publication. So join me, won't you, for the ESP 138th Issue Spectacular! Right about now, you're probably saying – "Troy, I've seen every ESP issue there is. You can't possibly show me anything new." Well, you got some attitude, Mister. Besides, you're wrong! Because over the 12 years the magazine's been in circulation they've received dozens of letters from fans wanting to know more about the magazine – so tonight for the very first time, I'll answer some of your unanswered questions. Professor George Michael Clarke of the University of East Anglia writes – ‘I think Steve Gonzalez gets funnier every year.’ That's not a question, Professor, but we'll let the readers judge for themselves.
Meanwhile Cameron David has emailed wanting to know if the rumour about Anne Widdicombe appearing on next month’s front cover is true? Oh Cameron, you are funny. As everyone knows, ESP front covers follow a strict 'no fat chicks' policy so if you want to see pictures of an elderly lady who can't dance, maybe you should try buying a 2011 Madonna calendar. And, let's not forget all those writers, contributors and advertisers who have made ESP possible, 138 issues don't just write, produce and pay for themselves you know – ‘Woo-hoo's to you all’ as we say in Springfield. Yes, ESP has come a long way in 138 issues and who knows what further adventures will unfold on its pages between now and when the magazine becomes unprofitable. Anyhoo, I'm Troy McClure, and I'll leave you with what we all came here to see: a picture from the very first issue of a woman with her breasts painted like puppies…
THE LAST MAN HOWLING For the third time in his career, Deeping darts ace Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams came away with the BDO World Championship at Lakeside last month. The oldest darts slinger in town rolled back the years to beat Dean Winstanley 7-5 in a thrilling final that was watched by an enthusiastic crowd and millions of viewers at home… including me! Wolfie's third world title also prompted some great stories in the newspapers. The Sun dubbed him 'The Codfather of Darts' and reported that he was set to build a new fish pond in his back garden, while The Daily Mirror revealed that he was set to give his set of winning darts as a wedding present to Prince William and Kate Middleton due to the Prince being a massive darts fan!

Matty Speaks Well the dust from the Christmas period has finally settled, and now we move on to February, and of course it’s the month of romance with the 14th being Valentine’s night! My top three places to go for a nice romantic meal would be – if you’re really feeling special – the George of Stamford (always a winner), I had a meal there between Christmas and New Year and I can honestly say it was one of the best I’ve ever had! Another winner for a lovely night in Stamford is of course Cloisters Italian Bistro on St Mary’s Hill, and my last, but in no way least, would be the Tobie Norris with their beautiful stone-baked pizzas.
7 Sins Bar & Club I popped my head round the door of the newly revamped Hole In The Wall and it’s looking very special, the new restaurant and bar offer a great new menu plus they have a special set one for Valentine’s night this month. The new venue is spilt into a beautiful restaurant and a newly designed night club upstairs called 7 Sins. The club offers free entry before midnight, £3 after, and their DJs are playing club classics until 3am including 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s. The club is also being let out for hire for private parties and functions. The new licensees Shaun and Fiona Hurrell are looking forward to seeing the next year get busier and to continue to provide the great service they’ve started! Stamford’s newest night out has been kicking into gear recently and I’ll be there with the Paparazzi girls next month to snap a few photos of the new venue and the new clientele!

It comes as a great shame for me to hear that there’ll be no Riverside Festival in 2011 as the organisers say they can't comply with what the Town Council has asked of them and consequently haven't been granted permission to run it. They're still hoping to resurrect the Riverside Festival but may be forced to move it out of the town centre from its usual location on the Meadows. They're making enquiries to see if they can find a new site nearby and are looking at several options. View their website for updates www.riversidefestival.co.uk or write to Stamford Town Council to pass on your views. If you’d like to get involved there are a few Facebook pages that are encouraging people to have their say and also an online petition can be found at www.ipetitions.com/petition/riverside/signatures. Be careful to click on the ‘sign’ bit and not the ‘like’ button. Riverside spokesman Jenny Collins told ESP – "We're determined to try and keep it going as we've all worked so hard on it. We'd prefer to keep it Stamford based if possible. We had footfall of 65,000 throughout the weekend last year with around 15,500 there at its peak on the Saturday and although there are always one or two things you can try and improve the feedback was really positive that people had really enjoyed it and there were no major problems. "If anyone has any suggestions for a new site we could use to hold the festival in the future or can offer help in any way we would love to hear from them." Call the Riverside Festival hotline if you think you can help or want more information on 07766 266136. Let’s hope that the Riverside Festival can be resurrected for the future!

paparazzi Caught in the act? ESP HITS THE TOWN AND FOLLOWS THE BEAR TO WHITTLESEY ESP’s Paparazzi photographers Mike Harris and Pep Cipriano have been out an about catching you all in the act of having a good time and here’s the evidence! The drinks were certainly flowing when we dropped by the Straw Bear Festival in Whittlesey – the pubs were packed! Everyone seemed to be having a great time at the likes of The Black Bull following the bear through the town and stopping off for a bevie or even a sing song at The Boat. The Beehive pub at Rivergate is fast building a reputation as a great place for a pint (try their Castor Ales, they’re gorgeous!) and for some particularly good pub food – but then it is run by the team behind Jim’s Yard in Stamford and Jim’s Bistro in Peterborough – and this crowd were certainly having a good time. It’s not just great live music the Cherry Tree’s famous for, karaoke night with Mighty Mouth Trevor is always a winner. This Oundle Road pub always has a great atmosphere thanks to landlords Ann and Jess and they’re such good sports they even bashed out a few tunes themselves!
TAG YOU’RE IT! Are you following ESP on facebook and Twitter yet? CELEBS
ALEXIS JORDAN After the huge success of hit single Happiness, Alexis Jordan is out to prove she’s still a Good Girl with plenty more hits on her debut album… New single Good Girl showcases Alexis’ sassy side as she sings – “I can be a good girl, but I’ve been bad before,” in between the upbeat, bouncing track where she flexes her wide ranging and powerful vocal capability. “I want to be really positive, no cussing, none of that,” says Alexis Jordan of her new album due out this month. “I’m a young artist and I want to be a role model. A lot of songs are upbeat, and some are ballads. There’s a little bit of that country vibe in it, and a little bit of that reggae vibe. My album really has everything.” Bold words from a confident young lady but when you’re just 18 with a huge debut hit under your belt and you’ve been songwriting since the age of 11 you can see why Alexis would be at ease with being just where she wants to be.
Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Alexis embodies a rich cultural background that includes her father’s Puerto Rican heritage and her mother’s African American, Native American and European ancestry. Singing since she began to speak, Alexis moved with her parents and three younger siblings to Santa Clarita, California to pursue a career in

“When I was 12, I opened up for Smokey Robinson at a Stevie Wonder tribute,” remembers Alexis. “I sang Ribbon In The Sky and Stevie was backstage like, ‘You didn’t think I heard you singing my song did you?’ I didn’t know how big of
With sharpened performance skills and more confidence than ever, the family travelled to Atlanta, Georgia for its burgeoning music scene and hotbed of talented producers. Alexis began making YouTube videos in between professional appearances. Although it would be these same online clips that would eventually land her the recording deal she wanted, Alexis was never crazy about the idea. “I was like, Mom, this is so not cool!” remembers Alexis. “Kids don’t sing in front of cameras, it’s weird. It didn’t feel natural at all! But after I did it for a little while I thought it was fun.” In September of 2008, her Youtube page was racking up millions of views. At that time, the multi-platinum, awardwinning production and writing team, Stargate, invited Alexis to New York for a meeting and recording session. “I thought if they didn’t love me then they wouldn’t fly me all the way out to New York,” says Alexis. “I knew I had a good chance. Once I got out there we recorded a few songs and JAY-Z came to the studio. I was so excited! And the next thing I knew I was signed to StarRoc/Roc Nation.”
“I’m a young artist and I want to be a role model”
“I’m bringing something fresh, something new and something positive to the world,” she says. “Something that is going to leave a mark on history and music. We are going to make this international. That’s my goal; it’s going to spread all around the world.”

the arts. After performing the National Anthem for the United States Air Force Academy, she soon started to attract a lot of attention. Soon, she was asked to sing at the start of various professional baseball games, which quickly gave way to bigger and better opportunities.

a legend he was but looking back on it now, I can’t believe that I did that! It was such a great experience.” While she continued to sing at high profile events around the country, Alexis spent the next few years in school, working as a professional actor, appearing on soap operas and commercials. At age 14, she entered the Simon Cowell produced TV competition, America’s Got Talent and made it all the way to the semi-finals thanks in part to a thrilling performance of Whitney Houston’s I Have Nothing. “When I got off stage after singing I Have Nothing Simon said, ‘You are an amazing singer,’” says
Now that Alexis has had the chance to work with some of the industry’s most sought after hit makers, she’s releasing her debut album this month and with her tremendous voice and a rack of potential hits we reckon you’ll be hearing a lot more of Alexis Jordan. The new single Good Girl is released February 20. Her self-titled debut album is out Monday February 28.

FITNESS
Lauren’s
fighting fit and
feeling good!
Our Face of ESP Lauren Hughes needs to keep in shape this year and has taken up her gym membership prize at Feelgood Fitness in Bretton just as the club launches its new studio.
The team there have continued to expand and have now introduced a new space upstairs offering classes in pilates, yoga and boxercise in addition to the spinning classes they’ve been running for a while. This friendly local gym is always listening to what members want and looking to add to what Feelgood has to offer so manager Matt Walker says this was the next step – “We’re not dictated to by directors out for more and more profit so we can re-invest each year and provide more for our members. Last year we introduced power plates which are the new in thing with many celebrities in their workouts and this year it’s the new studio area.”
Mallard Road, Peterborough
Tel: 01733 261641 www.feelgoodfitness.net
There’s room for 20 people in each class and there’s a new timetable but also new heart rate monitors are available at the gym to really see how well you’re working out. Just borrow a heart monitor, strap it on and then see how you’re doing with the read-out appearing on the plasma screens. You can even have your results emailed over. It’ll show you how many calories you’ve burned, how long you were in the fat burning zone and how long in the cardio zone. So no need to buy your own! Feelgood Fitness has a full range of gym equipment, training machines and weights and the team always pride themselves on having a friendly atmosphere and helpful staff, but if you’re a girl and still prefer a little more privacy there’s a ladies-only area upstairs. “I enjoy coming to the gym as I feel I can go to the ladies-only suite and continue with my training without being embarrassed in front of the guys working out at the gym,” says Lauren. “I enjoy going for a run and doing my cardiovascular workouts but am looking forward to starting some of the classes and working out with my personal trainer.”

www.espmag.co.uk
“It’s nice to have Lauren coming in,” adds Matt “and hopefully we can help keep her as trim as she already is. She obviously needs to look and feel her best as the Face of ESP and hopefully she’ll stick with us even after her free year is over.” Fitness classes are just £3.50 and one month membership’s available so maybe now’s the time to get those New Year’s resolutions kick started!

When it comes to the heart let’s look more at your physical heart as Italian cuisine uses foods that have several benefits particularly as many of them are the typical healthy Mediterranean foods such as:
Italian
Garlic – may provide protection against heart disease due to its blood pressure and cholesterol lowering abilities, it contains many good nutrients too such as B6. Olive oil – fresh, cold pressed olive oil drizzled over your salad may offer health benefits due to its ability to help lower inflammation, and its cholesterol lowering abilities (notice I said a drizzle – don’t have your food swimming in it!) Tomatoes – contain lycopene which has many benefits but one is to help protect the heart by blocking harmful chemicals called free-radicals that can damage cells and tissues. Red wine – packed full of substances called flavanoids that may help prevent heart disease by protecting the heart against cholesterol deposits. We’re not talking bottles but a glass or two with a nice Italian meal. Oregano – the herb used in most Italian dishes, it’s high in antioxidants which may help protect the heart, so get sprinkling! The Italians also love fresh, seasonal foods which of course are particularly rich in a huge supply of vitamins, minerals and enzymes (if eaten raw).
This year I am travelling around the world (well virtually anyway) to bring you some of the health benefits of world cuisine.
SWAPS
My first trip has to be Italy. Why? Because St Valentine’s Day itself emerged from Rome. The symbol of Valentine’s Day is the heart which relates to love. Is it true that the Italians are meant to be the most romantic? Hmmm, I think I should stick to food and not open a huge debate here, but there’s certainly plenty to love about the Italian diet! Italian food includes many fresh, seasonal foods that can be good for us. Of course there are some elements that are fat-laden and not so good such as the fatty sausages, cheese and creams but if these are occasional foods then enjoy, but these should definitely be treats and not daily meals. If you’re like me and try to avoid eating too much pasta and bread then you might find that a good Italian restaurant will offer some wheat-free options such as Topo Gigio on Cowgate, Fratellis in Castor, Riva on the Embankment, Amici in Spalding and Cloisters in Stamford to name just a few although probably best to give them the heads up in advance. You can also ask for a mix of pasta and roasted veg so you don’t overload on the gluten too, plus you get the additional nutritional benefits of the veg. Karen has a diploma in nutritional medicine, nutritional therapeutics and homotoxicology; she is a member of the British Association of Nutritional Therapists and runs her own private practice.

Christian Bale proves he’s not just a man behind the mask of a popular superhero franchise – by joining fellow Brit Colin Firth (see below) in grabbing a Golden Globe gong.
gavin.miller@espmag.co.uk
He’s joined by fellow cast member Melissa Leo in snagging Best Supporting Actor awards at the important ‘prelude to the Oscars’ show, which leaves them both with hopes of going the distance come Oscar time. But they’re not the only ones who pack a punch in this boxing drama from Three Kings director David O Russell, with Mark Wahlberg and Enchanted’s Amy Adams also nabbing their own fair share of the credit.
THE FIGHTER Released: February 4 Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Amy Adams. Director: David O Russell
This moving Rocky-esque flick is inspired by the unlikely rise to fame of Wahlberg’s Irish boxer Micky Ward, shepherded by half-brother trainer Dickie Ecklund (Bale), who himself was nearly KO’d by drugs and crime. Also check out the masterful re-imagining of John Wayne’s True Grit from No Country For Old Men Oscar-winning directors Joel and Ethan Coen – starring Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon – which was featured last month, but has since moved to a February 11 release date.
THE KING’S SPEECH Out now Cast: Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter. Director: Tom Hooper
I should be put in stocks and have hot Bovril, cabbages and gravel thrown at me for missing this heavily British-influenced gem from last month’s guide – I’ll blame it on release date confusion – as Colin Firth steals the show as stammering King George VI with his Golden Globewinning Best Actor in a drama performance. An Oscar win should be a cert – but I said the same about Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler a couple of years ago – in this rousing period drama from The Damned United director Tom Hooper, which boasts fantastic support from Geoffrey Rush as George’s eccentric speech therapist during his 1936-52 reign.

This major hair-raising, half-term, computer-generated animation offering – which also boasts Golden Globe nominations – sees Mandy Moore voice the long hairladen Rapunzel, who kidnaps charming bandit Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi) in this criticallylauded non-Pixar Disney tale.
James Cameron produces this claustrophobic, based on a true story, 3D thriller which sees a bunch of explorers – including Fantastic Four’s Brit actor Ioan Gruffudd – fight for survival after a tropical storm forces them deep into the labyrinth nightmare of a remote cave system.
British Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost re-team once again as two comic-book geeks who befriend an alien they find outside Area 51, in this out of this world (ahem) sci-fi comedy from the director of Superbad, which co-stars Seth Rogen and Sigourney Weaver.
This Michael Bay-produced action-thriller sees young Brit star Alex Pettyfer – recovering from the failed Stormbreaker franchise – star as a teenager with special powers on the run after three like him have been slain, with the aid of Die Hard 4.0's Timothy Olyphant
Rom-com stereotyped Ashton Kutcher teams up with Golden Globe-winning actress Natalie Portman (Black Swan) in this flighty flick about two friends who try and keep their sexual relationship strictly physical, before they realise they want more. As you do.

DC UNIVERSE ONLINE (PS3/PC) Out now Finally the wait is over as comic-book fans finally get to fight alongside the likes of Superman, Batman, the Flash and Wonder Woman. Or if villainy is your poison, then the Joker and Lex Luthor as your allies works equally as well in this massively multiplayer online (MMO as it’s known) world – which is the most anticipated to ever hit a home console. Travel to legendary places such as Gotham City and Metropolis, as you enter this expansive universe with your own created superhero after Brainiac sweeps down from the skies to take over earth. As with all MMOs (or even great games like Fallout 3) it is nigh on impossible to make it glitch-free – which proves to be its Kryptonite – and this monthly subscription game will undoubtedly receive constant patching as it strives for perfection. With a great combat system and state-of-the-art physics engine, Universe is more action-paced than your average MMO, but it’s undoubtedly the whole DC Comics package that makes this a must-have for fanboys. To the Batcave...

GRAN TURISMO 5 (PS3) Out now This undoubtedly takes the chequered flag when it comes to the best racing package on Playstation’s premier console. It tags itself as ‘The Real Driving Simulator’, and with more than 800 car models and sixty track layouts the attention to detail from developers Polyphony makes it worthy of the slogan – with jaw-droppingly photo realistic (and intermittently sub-standard) graphics thrown in. But it isn’t quite the benchmark title for the PS3 that Forza 3 was for the 360 last year – it doesn’t quite drive as well with surprisingly long loading times – but with its sheer depth it’s an encyclopaedic dream for motorsports fans that oozes quality.
• An excellent selection of real ales and wines • A large lawned beer garden with a patio seated area and children's play area • Traditional Sunday Roasts served from midday • A Sunday cash Quiz Night from 8pm • A convenient pit-stop off cycle route 12

NEED FOR SPEED: HOT PURSUIT (X360/PS3/WII/PC) Out now
If you mish-mash all the recent racing games – Shift, Burnout and Split/Second – and throw in the ability to drive as a cop, then you’re in Hot Pursuit. With racing games raising the bar extremely high in the past 18 months, this NFS game joins an elite pack with welcomed ingenuity, boasting an Autolog system that makes it easier to face-off against your friends, coupled with racing modes that see you on the right and wrong side of the law. The career mode does get a tad repetitive, but alongside Blur and the aforementioned Split/Second – this is a pure adrenaline rush.

But though it doesn’t quite compete with the likes of Super Mario Galaxy this is a delightfully innovative 2D and 3D experience as Mickey paints his way through an imaginatively Disneyinfluenced world that encompasses famous animation films and shorts. Sadly it is woefully let down by technical problems – mainly camera related – that will make you say “oh, boy!” – and leaves Walt’s most famous creation just short of ‘epic’ despite getting so much right.
#####
FALLOUT: NEW VEGAS – DEAD MONEY (360/PS3/PC) Out now The massively expansive five-star New Vegas still took my game of the year award despite being an intermittently glitchy game – but sadly the first DLC isn’t a high-roller. It deserves plaudits for offering something different – and Fallout fans will love the high difficulty curve – as you’re stripped of your weapons and bottle caps, and dragged by an explosive collar to a mysterious town. But its slow-paced survivalist story, coupled with a rushed feel, leaves this more like Operation: Anchorage than Broken Steel – but your level cap being raised by five (to 35) still makes this a worthy purchase.
##### Thanks to Ian Hilling for playtesting Dead Money.

2011 Season Dresses NOW IN

Andy Slater
After chatting to some of the city’s more mature musicians and being delighted by their stories of backache, stair-lifts and Viagra (only teasing lads...) I had an opportunity to sit and have a chat with a guy of less advanced years. John Quinn is a 26-year-old who it seems has been around far longer than his formative years suggest. I can remember John from the Met Lounge circa 2002 in his Beatles jacket and peaked cap and he seems to have been around and about ever since.
The Fleeting Minds
John Quinn
“Yeah that was probably when I did an acoustic set supporting the up-and-coming Snow Patrol,” he tells me, “or around that time anyway.” A time when guitar bands were coming out of bedrooms and into the national spotlight thick and fast.“I don’t think we have had that for a while now, guitar bands have sort of disappeared. The last wave were like Kasabian and The Pigeon Detectives but they were a few years ago, it seems all a bit synthy now.” A point I personally agree with. There doesn’t seem to be the next wave on the horizon, the next Libertines or Razorlight. Where is the next fresh sounding band to inspire the 13-year-olds to wanna be a rock star…? The Fidds, the Met, the Solstice, schools, local pubs – all had battle of the bands competitions, you don’t see it so much now. “It gave me an apprenticeship all that kinda stuff, I won a competition at the Solstice,” which funnily enough is where his life in a covers band started. “I was playing there and Smithy (Colin) was doing the sound. Big Paul and Blanty came to see Smithy and we got chatting.” Out of this chat came what was to be one of the most popular covers bands of the last three years – The Mighty Quinn. To be fair it was destined to be good, Paul Allen and Paul Blant are serious musicians, the rhythm section that has driven Peterborough’s pub scene for the last 15 years. The Loan Sharks, The Setting Sons, Smithy and then The Mighty Quinn, they’ve stirred up some cool beats and grooves in just about every venue in the area. Put John’s indie, Beatles-esque, soulful voice on top, a bit of guitar and you’re onto a winner. “It was only meant to be once a month,” he explains, “but we were asked to play more and more.”
42
www.espmag.co.uk
However after three years of gigging the band have called it a day to allow John’s talent for songwriting to flourish more in The Fleeting Minds which includes, Paul Blant on drums, Louis Speed on bass and John Dalton on guitar. “I think I’ve matured as a songwriter, I sing from the heart and hope the songs have meaning. I can write a song and know how Blanty will interpret it, it’s great working with him we’re just on the same wavelength.” Again, testament to the talent and perception of Paul Blant and to their friendship which not only sees them play and socialise together but work together at the Live Music Shop. Referring back to earlier there was a time when lots of bands sounded very much like Oasis or Blur with a bit of Beatles thrown in, some hoped they’d make it but you kind of knew they’d missed the boat by five years. John is aware of and embraces his influences but puts his own take on that influence which means you can’t really pin his music down to one band or even an era. It’s now, it’s today. “Mods, or Modernists to be precise, what’s the point of copying their style to the letter?” says John. “You can’t be a retro mod, what’s that all about?” It’s a very astute point from an intelligent guy and sums up The Fleeting Minds, it’s not retro but… there are little hooks and phrases in there that almost take you back but then they let you back through the door of the present. There is a record deal in hand with IMJ and you can expect an album out spring time with another maybe in the autumn, the songs are written and ready to be laid down and are different again to the album out soon. Busy lad that John Quinn, track The Fleeting Minds down on Myspace and Facebook.

EAST COAST HIT THE STUDIO
Local purveyors of ‘simmerin' blues & cookin' country rock’ East Coast have been building up quite a buzz with a number of live shows recently and now plan to follow up with some studio time. During February the band, which consists of Nigel Lavender, Nick Thorpe, Chris Thompson and David Block plan to record two versions of their own song Hillbilly Rose, one at Rock Star Studios near Corby and another at Confetti in Nottingham. If you'd like to hear Hillbilly Rose live, along with covers by Lynyrd Skynrd, Neil Young, Steely Dan and more, you can catch East Coast locally at The Railway Inn, Ramsey on February 5. Contact Nigel on 0795 8757824 for info or go to www.myspace.com/nigellavender
DUFFY BROTHERS HIT STAMFORD
As Willie Nelson said: "On the road again". This time though it is not he but the legendary Duffy Brothers. Once of County Mayo now of county local these guys have pedigree. Think Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette and Charley Pride, yes these guys have toured the USA with all of those legends which is not a job you get by being average. Couple that with appearances at the Grand Ole Oprey in Nashville and winning the UK's best country duo for seven years then you know you have something special.
THINK
FLOYD
The Brothers’ on stage humour is as revered as their banjo, mandolin, guitar and fiddle playing and you can catch them doing the whole caboodle at Mama Liz's in Stamford on Wednesday February 23 at 8pm. On stage helping the guys out will be bassist and Lin Griffin who some of you will recognise as the accordion player from the Dead Rabbits and the ceilidh band Claddagh. Sounds like a real hoot to me, and only a fiver... Yeeeeeeehah! Andy Slater
It’s considered highly unlikely that we’ll ever see again all members of Pink Floyd performing together on stage. The last time they got together was for the mammoth Live 8 gig in Hyde Park. But if you are a fan of the music of the band then Think Floyd are undoubtedly the nearest you’ll get to the experience. Think Floyd, dubbed "the definitive Pink Floyd experience," are renowned for their stunning celebration of the band’s music. They’re not lookalikes – that’s not a requirement to appeal to Pink Floyd fans – but they are quality musicians and they’ve managed to faithfully recreate the atmosphere and musical genius of one of the world's most legendary rock phenomena. I’ve seen Think Floyd a few times and in particular a memorable appearance at the Peterborough Beer Festival a few years ago made an impact. The four members of Think Floyd are based in different parts of the UK, but there’s a local connection with bassist Lewis Hall coming from Peterborough. He’s been with the band for 10 years and has always been a fan of the Floyd. His favourite track: Echoes. Great taste!
FROM YEE-HA TO ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK! Never let it be said that this area doesn’t cater for a wide range of musical tastes. So a brief mention for some shows coming to the area in February. First of all The Wilders visit Spalding’s South Holland Centre for an evening of old-time Americana, consisting of hillbilly, bluegrass, ho-down and good-time music.
They spend an increasing amount of time together as there’s an understandable demand for their services in this country and also Belgium, Holland and Greece. This year they travel back to the Greek island of Rhodes, where they play at Rhodes Rocks. Purely by coincidence, this giant festival takes place on land adjoining the house of Pink Floyd’s Dave Gilmour. I wonder if he’s seen Think Floyd but Lewis told me there have been no ‘official’ sightings of Mr Gilmour at the gig.
Kansas based The Wilders write and perform classic honky-tonk, old-time country and fiddle tunes with engaging energy and spirit that’s won them a reputation as one of the most mesmerising country acts coming out of the US. In the UK for a short tour they’re headlining at the Celtic Connections festival before taking the road south to Spalding! It’s on February 9 and the box office at the South Holland Centre is on 01775 764777. Yeeee-ha!
Before that they’re about to start their 2011 tour of the UK and we have the chance to see the band in this area when they return to Bourne Corn Exchange on February 4. Box office 0782 803 2241.
Secondly, get out of that kitchen and rattle those pots and pans at Bourne Corn Exchange on February 5. Rock ‘n’ roll fans can see Phil Hayley & His Comments. They have an incredible live show, featuring, not only all the big Bill Haley, hits but a lot of their own material. If you want to rock around the clock the number for tickets is 0782 803 2241.
The gig will feature the whole range of classic Pink Floyd from Syd Barrett, through Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here, to The Division Bell. With exhilarating visual lighting effects and great sound this is a 'must-see' evening for all Floyd fans and lovers of live music!
Then there’s American outlaw country legend, Bob Wayne dropping by at Mama Liz’s in Stamford. He’s only doing four dates in the UK, all at big city venues, apart from lucky Mama’s who’ve clinched his appearance in Stamford on February 22. Good going guys! Don’t leave it late to book if this your thing – 01780 765888.
FAME ON THE ONE SHOW FOR PAUL Photo: Mike Harris

PUB GUIDE News The Rose Pub & embe Restaurant
SMITHS, BOURNE
If you fancy a change from a city centre pub, then head over to Smiths in Bourne. This pub serves a wide selection of tasty meals, and they’ve even got a team of new chefs to continue cooking great food. There’s a new evening dining experience, and everyone’s advised to book early to avoid disappointment. You can enjoy an early bird special, which consists of two courses for just £10.95, which is on offer from 12pm – 2.30pm and 6pm – 7pm Monday to Saturday. Or if you’re an early bird yourself, drop in for some breakfast anytime between 8am and 11am. No matter what time of day, Smith’s are open and ready to take your order!

EMBE/THE ROSE The Rose and Embe Restaurant along Burghley Road have had some great feedback recently. They were pleased to tell us that Mr. Peterborough himself – Peter Boizot OBE – dropped in for a visit to the restaurant, and thoroughly enjoyed one of their specialities, a mango salad and rundown vegetable dish. He’s also said he’ll be returning soon for another tasty meal, so make sure you pop along too and try out the yummy food yourself! They’re taking bookings for their first ever Valentine’s Day, so for any further details check their website, or call them on 01733 873003.
