Retro Romance L Tony and Sally Wilmot, early 80s

ocal paramedic turned paparazzo Chris Porsz has been spending his spare time snapping pictures inbetween driving his ambulance, for over 20 years.

Chris told ESP – “As a very minor snapper I was surprised, but honoured, that the museum asked me to reopen their new galleries with my 80s images, new work and unique reunions. I have 18 of the latter, half of which have never been seen before.”

He’s created quite a collection of Peterborough faces and places over that time and has had two exhibitions in Queensgate already, as well as national press coverage as he’s managed to reunite his subjects and recreate some of his favourite shots. Now he’s gearing up for a big exhibition in the city’s museum when it re-opens on March 19 after a huge facelift.

After printing two successful calendars Chris is now hoping to produce a book of his images and continues to build on his photographic collection. “My job as a paramedic often involves approaching total strangers and trying to reassure and put them at their ease,” explains Chris. “This seems to help me in my photography too. I don’t know what drives me to walk for hours

If my pictures make people smile then I have achieved my goal. I’m also driven to record the changing city for posterity and I am now making up for lost time for not taking more in the eighties.” As it’s the month of love here are just some of his images from across the years capturing some of the city’s love struck couples. Hairdressers could make a donation from all hair treatments and products sold throughout the month or maybe hold a ‘love is in the hair’ promotion for Valentine’s Day. At work you could have a wacky week with Mane-ia Monday, Tong it Tuesday, Wear a Wig Wednesday, Trim it Thursday, Frizzy Friday, Shave it Saturday and Style it Sunday – or perhaps arrange a sponsored wax or shave, anything goes. Adults need to raise a minimum of £75 and 12-16 year olds, £25 or more, which will provide care and support to life-threatened children and their families across Cambridgeshire. To sign-up for the abseil, or for info about EACH, visit www.each.org.uk or call 01223 205180.

MOTOWN NIGHT Ian Gray takes a live version of his popular BBC Radio Cambridgeshire Sunday evening soul show out on the road… to Werrington. On Friday February 3, the Cock Inn plays host to what promises to be an evening of sizzling soul across the spectrum of Motown, northern, Stax, Atlantic, Philly and more, bringing a flavour of Detroit, Memphis & Chicago to the pub. Getting underway from around 7.30pm, Ian will be looking to provide a blend of the classics and the little heard, sometimes forgotten favourites from both national and local soul venues of the 60s & 70s. Those with long memories will recall hearing the monsters of the day at Manchester’s Twisted Wheel, or the Wigan Casino and locally at the Spinning Wheel or Cloud Nine. Now they’ll be on the decks at the Cock Inn. Sounds a great opportunity to get the dancin’ shoes out.

BEERS AND THE BEAR ESP’s Andy Slater was our man on the scene for the Straw Bear… Well he was in the pub anyway! And by all accounts the pubs were packed as the annual festival once again brought some fun and frivolity to Whittlesey in January. Fancily dressed Morris and Molly dancers brought some real colour and lively tunes to the town as they danced around the streets and on the market square. Crowds followed the Straw Bear and mini bear as they paraded through the centre and it was another great success all the way to the burning of the bear on the Sunday (man inside removed at this point, never fear!) Andy told us – “Like the beer festival in summer you catch up with lots of old faces that you haven't seen for a year! All the pubs were packed, there was a fantastic atmosphere in the town and it should be on everyone's social calendar for next year.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DICKENS! Peterborough will be turning Dickensian in February! Dickens 2012 is an international celebration of the life and work of Charles Dickens to mark the bicentenary of his birth. Dickens visited Peterborough on a number of occasions, to hold his famous ‘public readings’ in the city. In the main event on Dickens’ birthday (February 7) local Historian Richard Jones will be speaking on Dickens, in full costume, re-enacting the man himself, talking about his life and performing readings from some of his best known works. He’ll be joined by Stuart Orme (he of the city’s famous ghost walks) from Peterborough Museum revealing Dickens’ many links to Peterborough, which well-known Dickens character may have been based on a Peterborough resident, and much more. Tickets are £3 adults, £2 concessions, from the Central Library. Tel: 01733 864280.

RED FOR HEART BANDS & TUNES @ CHARITY NIGHT FOR BHF The Boro Bar on Oundle Road has some great live music this month as part of a special fundraising charity night in aid of the British Heart Foundation on Saturday February 18. The Red For Heart event, organised by Cercle Audio & Lighting Ltd starts at 7pm with local Peterborough bands in the main bar including, Crash ‘n’ Burn, a five piece band composing a variety of classic rock. Six piece band The Emeralds put a different edge on today’s music, and Let There B/DC are an acclaimed five piece tribute band capturing the energy and raw power of AC/DC’s sounds. There’ll also be a special karaoke/disco in the lounge featuring a variety of DJs throughout the night. During the evening there’ll be the opportunity for anyone to make donations in the collection boxes, and there’s a raffle with some great prizes. All money raised from the event will support the BHF in its fight against heart and circulatory disease which is still the UK’s biggest killer. MORNING GLORY?

pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk

Apparently 7.30am is the best time to have sex. This is when your body produces a surge in hormones and a rush of adrenalin to make you ‘responsive.’ Is that so? When did you last ‘respond’ to crusty lips, kebab breath, eye bogeys, rancid armpits and musty hair?

‘HITMAN’ HUGHES IN CHARITY BOXING BOUT Forget Amir Khan and his re-match, the fight of the year is only weeks away! Former Face of ESP Lauren ‘Hitman’ Hughes will be lacing up against ESF Sports fitness coach Emma ‘Fast Hands’ Fidgett in the city’s most eagerly awaited sporting contest in decades. It’ll be a three-round battle to see who’ll be the last woman standing and which of them has raised the most dosh for charity when the final bell rings. Emma has been called in to fight at the eleventh hour after our current Face of ESP Jessica Lockhart suffered an unrelated injury and had to pull out. Jess is devastated but will be cheering on our Lauren and checking out her moves in preparation for a match-up later this year. The ESF Sports night of white-collar boxing has been organised in aid of Sue Ryder and the action takes place at the Holiday Inn on March 3. Tickets for the big night and other fights throughout the evening are just £25. Call Vic on 07595 167679 or email efidgett@btinternet.com

WIRRINA REUNION CLASS OF 1975 The Northern Soul scene was vibrant in Peterborough during its heyday in the mid-1970s and it’s never really been forgotten thanks to numerous people who continue to keep that special sprit alive. The 2012 Wirrina reunion of ’75 is a night not to be missed for Northern Soul fans who remember frequenting the venue from 1973 to 1976. I remember school discos there in the 80s and five-a-side football in the 90s but the real vibe at the Wirrina was during the fabulous 1970s so I’m told. Sadly the venue is no more so this reunion takes place at the Parkway Club on Maskew Avenue on February 10 from 7.30pm. It’s free entry before 9.30pm and music on the night is by DJs Smudge, Paul Donnelly, Gary Spencer and Jonah who were spinning discs way back in 1975. Free entry tickets must be reserved. Call Andy Smith on 07788 572459 or email smugde1@live.co.uk to claim yours. I’ve got mine – and my camera – it’ll be fascinating to see (and photograph) how the old folk rock…

IS THAT LOVING FEELING

This is officially the 150th issue of ESP Magazine and that means I’ve written almost 150 columns at this time of year about Valentine’s Day. Tradition expects this of me so here’s my take on love and February 14 with 150 in mind. 150 is: • the amount of cash you waste on showing you love her this same day every year • the maximum number of pence you should spend on her card • the number of extra calories a day you’ll consume when you fall in love • the average number of minutes a week you’ll assure (lie to) her that her bum doesn’t look big • the amount in pounds sterling you’re worse off a year because of ‘decorative’ pebbles and candles • pairs of shoes she has when children in poverty-stricken parts of Africa have none

BMW’S NEW 2012 SUPERBIKE IS HERE… It’s all about maximum grin factor and maximum pooping my pants factor doing it. The all-new 193bhp superbike from BMW will be available this month and I’ll be one of the first lucky b******s to ride it. I still find myself grinning like a mischievous schoolboy when I think of my test ride on BMW’s brilliant S1000RR back in June 2010. Riding that bike was absolutely mind blowing and the last time I felt that alive was when I met Maria Whittaker at Truckfest in 1989.

CIAOS OUT > 14

www.espmag.co.uk

At the time few people thought it couldn’t be manufactured any better but how wrong they were. The sports bike that made all other machines in its class look like museum artifacts has been given an upgrade and word is the S1000RR is now simply God-like.

It comes with new traction control, a modified chassis, improved low to midrange power, sharper steering and a subtle cosmetic makeover that makes it look menacing but somehow defined. I’m foaming at the mouth and dribbling all over the keyboard so time to stop typing. If

you’re looking for a brand new, state of the art, brilliantly built sports bike then you’ll buy this one end of story. Call Balderston for a test ride on 01733 565470 or do it online at www.balderston.net and read the lowdown on this superb bike.

10 YEARS YOUNGER WONDER? Genifique is a skin care product referred to by makers Lancôme as a ‘youth activating concentrate’. This basically means massage it into your face every day before moisturising and by your next birthday you’ll look like Justin Bieber. It claims to slow down or reverse the signs of aging on the skin, especially fine lines and wrinkles. Up until now this product has been mainly marketed with women in mind but a nice lady from Boots in Queensgate convinced me to become the first man to give this wonder serum a whirl for a few weeks. Find out on Charlotte’s Health & Beauty pages if it’s made me look like one of those little boys from One Direction.

MY WORD OF THE MONTH

Love

It’s Valentine’s so I thought I’d remind us all of what real love actually means: Skint, routine, weight gain, arguments, plant pots, jealousy, insecurity, justification, prisoner, tissues, tears, dull, excess body hair, acceptance, sharing, floral arrangements, cupcakes, big pants, baggage, line dancing and Jordan books.

BROWN’S DANCE FEVER IS STAYIN ALIVE I’ll never be a Harry from Busted but there’s no doubt I’ve progressed from having two left feet to one and a half left feet in the time my girl and I spent learning our Latin and ballroom moves with Edna Brown. For more than 40 years Brown’s Dancentre, run by Dereck and Edna Brown, taught hundreds of people to dance – including the ESP editor – and my folks who stopped going when baby Pep was born. Dereck and Edna made the difficult decision to call it a day just before Christmas but I’m pleased to say the Brown’s teaching technique lives on through their daughter Jo and instructor Janina who’ve branched out on their own. Thank you Dereck and Edna and remember: keep dancing!

MEET MARVELOUS MARVIN

He was one of the best middleweight boxers ever and a fighter who came from an era of real champions; athletes with ring craft, guile and dexterity. Marvin Hagler is a true great and he’s coming to Peterborough in March. Boxing fans will be in for a real treat as ‘Marverlous Marvin’ recites the highs and lows of a career that included memorable fights with other proper champions; namely Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns and Roberto Duran. They don’t come more respected than Hagler and it’s thanks to Kevin Sanders that we’ve got a chance to see him at a special dinner next month. For details and tickets call Kevin on 01733 371912.

TOP TOFFEE IS CRISPIEST OF THEM ALL When we talk about great creators there are plenty. For example there’s God who made the universe and Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg. But last month the greatest creator of them all died. His name was John Henderson and he was responsible for giving us the Toffee Crisp. Genius.

Scarlett Evenings really sets a benchmark for glamorous looks and the new Celebrity and Exquisite ranges are now in.

If you want an evening look or prom dress follow the celebs down the red carpet and head for Swanky Rags… Swanky Rags on Broadway is now stocking the very latest looks and is the exclusive stockist in this area for the in-demand Scarlett Evenings collection and Nightmoves, the ultra glam range from the USA. Now though, you can also copy celeb style with the new Pia Michi range favoured by the likes of Amy Childs, Alexandra Burke and Katie Price for all their red carpet events! Swanky Rags moved along Broadway to larger premises with private access some time ago but has recently had a fabulous refit with one half of the store devoted to glamorous gowns and the other half to gorgeous wedding and bridesmaids outfits.

Rachel from Swanky Rags told ESP – “Although the Cinderella style is still popular many of the new ranges are more shapely or floaty in fabrics like chiffon or silk. Pastels are making a return along with nude and gold but fuchsia and purple is still strong. “We’re really excited to be stocking Pia Michi now and we’re the third largest outlet for Scarlett Evenings.” So girls, if you want to be the star attraction you know where to head. Rachel and her team pride themselves on honest and personal service so you’ll get a gown you really look the business in not a frightful frock!

Man Auction! Now to say the girls in the office are clearing their diaries and getting pretty excited about this event is an understatement! ESP is, obviously, very pleased to be supporting the city’s very first fundraising Man Auction at the Holiday Inn in Thorpe Wood on March 30. This fantastic new charity event is raising funds for some great local causes – Sue Ryder, Addenbrookes Liver Unit (in aid of local woman Maggie Mooney) and also in aid of Stuart Niven from local company Royal Haskoning who

20

was badly injured in a car accident, see www.stuartniven.co.uk Many local people have connections with all these charitable causes so not only will it be a fun night but one that’s also doing some real good! So what exactly is a Man Auction? Well, you’re not going home with a new fella girls

Supported by

but you are bidding for their services. So it could be a fitness instructor to get you back in shape, a gardener to sort out that jungle in the back garden for a day, a computer geek to mend your PC, a decorator to spruce up your living room… you get the picture! The night will bring together the women of Peterborough for an evening of good food, friends and fun. After the dinner the auction will begin, there’ll be a ‘man menu’ so you can see in advance the type of ‘man that can’ that you need the most. The bids will then begin when the lights hit the stage and the men can be viewed! Don’t worry lads you are allowed to bring along friends for support, tickets on the door for them are £10. Any guys who think they could be auctioned off to raise some vital cash should get in touch with Karen

Devine who’s organising the event on 01733 321107. The night includes a three course meal, music, raffle and our very own Face of ESP girls will be there to make sure the guys walk out on stage in style… and maybe calm a few nerves! More sponsors and prize givers are still needed. We’ve got our table booked girls so come on down. The night starts at 7pm with the auction from 9pm. Tickets are £35 including pre dinner drink and meal and a gift bag.

Stamford CALLING

matt.zilch@espmag.co.uk

Matty Speaks... IF YOU’RE A POET AND YOU Well, as I blow off the last remaining cobwebs of my panto season, I’m left with a clean canvas to work on for the year, looking forward to more gigs with my bands the Meizters and Cool Britannia, plus hopefully some more acting work later in the year (watch this space).

KNOW IT… TRY VERSE 2012 It’s great to tell you all about some new exciting stuff going on in town and Verse 2012 is an all new poetry festival for Stamford – plus we’re getting our very own Poet Laureate!

If you thought poetry was boring, think again! From Wednesday March 28 to Monday April 2 Verse 2012 will be bringing you big names in UK poetry, Ian McMillan and John Hegley plus Peterborough's finest national touring duo, The Dead Poets.

So, even though I know it’s now February I thought I’d talk New Year’s Resolutions! I’ve had a think and here are mine: 1) Eat better food! 2) Write more music 3) Stop spending money on things I really don’t need! 4) Get up earlier in the morning 5) Make more time to see my friends

There’s loads coming up which we’ll keep you posted about but the competition to crown Stamford’s first Poet Laureate is now open for entries. If you, or someone you know, are a secret Wordsworth, Keats, Burns, Ayres or even something totally new and extraordinary, this is a fantastic chance to showcase your talent.

I’m also looking for new ideas for features to add to my column so if anyone out there has any suggestions feel free to e-mail at matt.zilch@espmag.co.uk

If you're over 18 and think you've got what it takes, visit www.stamfordartscentre.com/verse2012 to find out how to enter, the responsibilities you’ll be expected to take on and the competition rules.

JIMMY, ABBA & HIP HOP @ CORN EXCHANGE

VIVALDI CONCERT IN GREAT HALL @ BURGHLEY

Get these dates in your diary and make sure you’ve got something to look forward to!

There’s a concert at Burghley House’s Great Hall later on this month, which is ideal for those of you who love the magnificent music of Antonio Vivaldi (a little different from the kind of music I’m used to, but fab in a more classical way!)

During half term there’s a special show at the Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre in aid of local charity Anna’s Hope. Good old Jimmy Cricket’s appearing on February 15 with a family comedy show and the good news is it’s just a tenner and the kids go free!

The Oakham School Chamber Choir have just become MACC Youth Choir champions and one of six finalists in the BBC Songs of Praise School Choir of the Year – which is great! They’re joined by the Oakham School Chamber Orchestra and leading pupil soloists to perform peerless music by Vivaldi. I’ve heard numbers are limited so get booking ASAP! Call 01572 768820 for tickets, which are £15.

Then on February 18 you can be a Dancing Queen and sing along with Bootleg Abba, the ultimate Abba experience, back by popular demand for a real feel good night out. Tickets for this one are £15 (concessions £14) under 16's £12 (family of four £50). Dance fans should catch Elusive Symmetry, an evening of hip hop dance with electro/acoustic music on Friday February 10. If you’re into your dance, acclaimed hip hop dancer Lizzie Gough (Some Like It Hip Hop, BBC1's So You Think You Can Dance, Blaze) takes centre stage with her own solo choreography, drawing on her unique blend of popping, locking and jazz styles. Tickets are £10 (concessions £8 adults, £4 children) from the box office or on 01780 766455.

L’OLIVETO RESTAURANTE ITALIANO I hear there’s a cracking Valentine’s menu at this lovely new addition to Stamford’s restaurant scene. It’s £39.99 per person and you can enjoy their authentic Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. Call 01780 489169 for more details. It’s the place to go if you really want to go that extra mile for your Valentine!

ATTIC TIL DAWN HIT VOODOO If you like your live tunes there’s a new band worth checking out at the Voodoo Lounge on February 4 called Attic Til Dawn. These 17 year-olds from Oundle have already lined themselves up with after party gigs for the Maccabees and Noel Gallagher and have been busy recording their album Heads Or Tails. Jack the band’s bassist tells us – “We’re influenced by Led Zeppelin, Them Crooked Vultures, Nirvana and the Foo Fighters and our aim is to bring back guitar music into the mainstream.” Sounds good to me! We’ll check them out and I’m sure Keith will have more on these guys in his Live Music column in future. www.facebook.com/AtticTilDawn

STAMFORD’S NEW FLAVOURS Eating out in Stamford is seeing a real boost at the moment, I’m pleased to see. The Cosy Club seems to be thriving day and night, and if you haven’t dropped by yet, the rebranded ASK Italian has had a vibrant new refit on St Johns Street and is looking good. The Barn has made way for the arrival of L’Oliveto in Old Barn Passage. Some of you may have already tried their other restaurants in Oakham and at Rutland Water so it’s great to now have one right on our doorstep. Serving up Italian and Mediterranean cuisine it’s open for coffee, lunch and dinner. Then of course for those who favour a more Oriental flavour the new noodle bar, Wok Box, has also just opened opposite the London Inn. Let me know what you think to any of these new eateries at matt.zilch@espmag.co.uk

paparazzi Caught in the act? Hundreds of revellers were determined to beat the January blues and ended the month as they started it, with a few drinks and a bit of partying in Peterborough city centre. Our Man About Town Pep Cipriano joined the crowds and pointed his camera at party-goers braving the winter chill. Pep and his lovely lens assistant hit the city's Broadway venues starting with Yates's where the New Year celebrations were still in full flow! Next stop was O'Neill’s and it was time to refuel with a swift half of Guinness and to catch some more of you in the party mood. The Paparazzi team then crossed the road to the College Arms where staff were pulling pints for a group of superheroes who were taking time out from rescuing the world. The world was very much set in the 1970s at Flares where Pep pointed his camera at next. There was plenty of boogie and the cocktails were flowing and judging by the photos the party crowd at Reflex and Edwards didn't miss out either!

Nicole Scherzinger Global pop star, Nicole Scherzinger meets her UK fans this month with three live performances. Warren Higgins caught up with her and grabbed a word for ESP… Looking forward to wowing her fans this month with her flawless stage shows, this multi-talented performer will prove why she’s become one of the most successful artists in the UK this year. Her massively successful debut album Killer Love is being re-released on November 14 including exciting new tracks, such as latest single Try With Me, and the previously unheard Trust Me I Lie and Tomorrow Never Dies. In addition, the new album features top US rapper, 50 Cent on the remix of hit single Right There. So is she pleased with the reaction to her debut album here, as obviously the UK seems to have a real soft spot for her? “Oh my gosh,” enthuses Nicole, “I am beyond pleased, it means everything to me. I’m so happy, I’m so excited and I’m so grateful. I mean I had my first number one single in the UK, and am very fortunate to have five singles there from this album so far and I’m so grateful for my UK fans, Pussycat Dolls fans and the X Factor fans there.” Although the album’s being repackaged Nicole’s still working on plenty of new material despite her tough schedule. “I’m always in the studio, we repackaged the album I believe late last year, I added four extra songs – Try With Me, Right There featuring 50 Cent, Trust Me I Lie, and Tomorrow Never Dies, which is a really cool song as well. I’ve been in the studio even though I was doing X Factor in the US last year – I was in the studio every other night, and we had music coming out. So after this Killer Love album there’s gonna be another album, and I’m never gonna stop! As long as there’s fans and the people connect and love it and will have me I will continue to do it.” These few tantalising live dates in Manchester, London and Birmingham will no doubt leave the British public wanting more and Nicole’s hoping it’ll lead to a bigger tour. “That’s my goal, that’s my dream, that’s why I’m putting my own money into this tour and that’s why I’ve been preparing for it. That’s my ultimate dream – to have a world tour, but also a bigger UK tour. But you’ve got to start somewhere and I’m honoured that I get to start in the theatres and that the fans are going to come out for it. I can guarantee these shows are going to be so great that fans will be wanting more so I’ll be back!”

You may not realise it but the former Pussycat Doll did musical theatre at college and recently blew everybody away at the Royal Variety Performance with some of her renditions. So I wonder if she’d like to do a full run some day on Broadway or London’s West End in a musical? “Absolutely, theatre has a big part of my heart. There’s nothing like the stage, and that’s why I was honoured to play Christine in the Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Variety Show. It’s just rewarding, as an artist, for me to be able to have that outlet and to do that part of me that I love.” Since fronting one of the world’s most famous female collectives, Nicole’s not only firmly established herself as a soloartist, but she’s gone on to become a TV personality as a judge on undoubtedly America’s biggest TV launch of the year; US X-Factor. It seems guesting on the UK version was a good rehearsal for her. “Absolutely. First of all, after starting out on a show like that I’ve come full circle, and I feel like that gave me an advantage because for me as an artist I could empathise with the other contestants,” she explains. “I knew what they were going through, I knew how they felt and I knew how much it really meant to them, so I was able to go from that empathetic point of view. But guesting for the X Factor UK was definitely great prep work for me and I do miss the X Factor UK, because I found the contestants to be a lot more bubbly and fun, and I found the crowd could be really outrageous and very outspoken which I love. I loved that they really welcomed me with open arms there.” And last question; on the X Factor she came second with her act this year, so is she aiming for first next year? “I’ll always aim for first,” she says with determination. “Like Simon says you don’t go into a competition hoping you get second. But second for me was first this year with Josh. I’m proud of the work we did together and for me I feel like we won. “And I just want to say that I can’t wait to do this tour in the UK for my fans. They’re the best fans and I’m going to give them a show that they never forget.” www.nicolescherzinger.com

HeAlTH and beauty ESP’s Charlotte Jolly has all the latest health and beauty news…

charlotte.jolly@espmag.co.uk

J’Adore Genefique Skin is the largest human organ and it works hard to withstand the stresses of everyday life. Everyone strives to have beautiful, youthful looking skin which is largely down to our genes but with the right skin care regime you can give nature a helping hand. After 10 years of research Lancôme has discovered that skin’s youthfulness is determined by certain proteins on the skin’s surface and that over time these proteins decrease. This is where Génifique comes in, as the innovative formula creates a more favourable environment for these ‘youth proteins’ on the surface of your skin. When asked to review this ground-breaking youth tonic, of course I jumped at the chance for myself, family and friends to put it to the test for three weeks and see if it really works. Despite being lucky enough to not have any wrinkles (yet) one of my new year’s resolutions was to start thinking about an anti-ageing routine as the earlier the better. I really enjoyed applying the light concentrate to my face which instantly left my skin feeling smooth. I continued to apply the lotion every day, both morning and evening for three weeks and have definitely noticed that my skin has a much more even tone, and has a subtle glow to it which at this time of the year is hard to achieve naturally. Here’s what my other testers had to say… Sheena, 34 – “My skin type is sensitive/dry and pleasingly I found Lancôme Génifique a lovely light product, with a subtle tonic scent to it which didn’t aggravate my skin at all. It left my skin very soft and smooth with a slight tightness to it, really feeling like it was working.” Anna, 58 – “I’ve been using it religiously since being asked to try the concentrate and it’s made my skin appear smoother and more even toned. My skin looks more radiant and I’ve noticed it looks younger and fresher and feels supple. I will be buying this again – it really is a wrinkle wonder cream.”

All you need is love But a few products along the way don’t hurt – here are some ideas to make this Valentine’s Day a beautiful one…

Lancôme in Boots, Queensgate And it’s not just women who can benefit from this youth activating cream; men these days take just as much pride in their skin as their female counterparts and want a youthful, radiant complexion too. Edward, 28 – “When I first put it on my skin felt soft but after a few hours my skin had this almost plumpness to it. I was amazed that it actually worked! I felt like I had exchanged my old skin for brand new skin.” ESP’s Pep Cipriano – “I actually think it seems to be working! It’s subtle but my laughter lines seem thinner and the bags under my eyes are not as pronounced.” So, the verdict is in and all members of the jury conclude that Génifique is guilty of causing youthful, brighter looking skin. To breathe new life into your skin visit your Lancôme counter in Boots, Queensgate, Peterborough where Denise will be more than happy to show you the way forward with Génifique.

Give the gift of roses this Valentine’s Day but with a twist – Lush’s Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner (£15.50) is beautifully fragranced with the finest rose oil which is fantastic on the skin. Not only will it leave your skin infused with the aroma of rose but it will be left seriously soft, smooth and supple, just begging to be kissed. Rose wax is also extremely softening and soothing for the skin and Lush use it in their new Ultrabalm (£8.25). This eco-friendly version of Vaseline will guarantee you’ll have super kissable lips this Valentine’s Day. Tesco have a whole host of Valentine treats and gifts. For a superindulgent aromatic treat try Bayliss and Harding Skin Spa Rose Bubble Bath (£4) Bayliss and Harding Rose Bath Soaps (£4) and Bayliss and Harding Bathing Roses (£3) ideal for a relaxing bath before a special date or a pampering night in. Why not say ‘I Love You’ with the perfect scent? For your knight in shining armour The Perfume Shop suggest you try Diesel Only The Brave EDT 50ml (£36.50). The unique fist shaped bottle will show him what a big tough guy you think he is and he’ll be hard pushed not to fall in love with the woody Oriental scent. And guys, for the angel in your life try Thierry Mugler’s Angel EDP 50ml (£54.99). With hints of chocolate, caramel and vanilla it will leave her feeling spoilt but without the calories – you’ll definitely win brownie points as well as the key to her heart.

Denise

Fall in love with your lips this Valentine’s with Clinique’s new Almost Lipstick (£16). This glossy, non staining lip colour soothes the lips and leaves them with a shiny finish. Perfect for attracting your Prince Charming. Go red and try it in Chic Honey, the deep cherry red will make even the thinnest of lips look fab.

BEAT AGAIN Not only is February the month for celebrating Valentine’s Day but it’s also National Heart Month where the British Heart Foundation (BHF) encourages the nation to follow its simple BEAT code to take steps towards a healthier heart. Many people believe that heart disease affects more men than women when in fact it kills one in three women as well as one in three men and actually kills three times more women than breast cancer. So, follow the beat of your heart and BEAT code’s simple steps to help keep your heart healthy. Be active – Keeping your heart regularly exercised is vital for maintaining a healthy heart. Like any part of the body, the fitter you are the more efficiently the body works and the same goes for your heart. Doing exercise with friends will make it more fun and enjoyable, meaning you’re more likely to stick at it. Eat healthily – What we eat doesn’t only affect our waistlines but our hearts too. A healthy, well balanced diet will provide your body with all the nutrients you need. Aim to have at least five portions of fruit and veg a day and cut down on salt and saturated fats. Avoid smoking – Smoking is one of the major risk factors for heart disease but fear not, you CAN kick the habit! Set a date for giving up and stick to it. Support from friends and family will be needed and why not use the money you save to treat yourself to something special? Take the free lifestyle check – The BHF has developed a free online lifestyle check to help you identify areas of your lifestyle that may require some work to help keep your heart healthy. This way you can make positive changes to your lifestyle not only during February but for the rest of your life. The check is quick and easy to fill out and you get a personalised report with tips and support when you’re finished. www.bhf.org.uk/beat Help show your support for a healthy heart by following the BEAT code and wearing red on National Wear Red Day, Friday February 24. Together, let’s keep the nation’s heart beating!

BOBBI’S NEONS & NUDES The new spring collection from Bobbi Brown has all bases covered and we’re loving the day to night time looks of the new Neons and Nudes collection. The neon brights are perfectly balanced by the range of soft nudes and this oh-so-handy palette (£39) slips perfectly into your bag to make sure you’re ready for anything! www.bobbibrown.co.uk

Beautiful Day Spa in Yaxley is a great little local get away from the hustle an bustle and this month they’re offering a fantastic deal which is an ideal alternative for Valentine’s too.

It’s been kept under wraps for a while now and we’re one step closer to seeing the final product – the Serenity Loves beauty salon is almost here.

ESF Sports owner, Emma Fidgett

Boxing isn’t the only thing ESF has built up a reputation for though, the gym’s well known for it’s one to one personal training sessions with Emma and Vic, plus it has all the equipment you could need from rowers and steppers to resistance machines and weights, but it’s not just the facilities that are making ESF popular. “This is a really personal gym,” explains Emma,“we joke that people become part of the ‘ESF Crew’ because everyone’s so welcoming and it’s so friendly here.”

WHITE COLLAR BOXING Nobody talks about Fight Club… but everybody’s talking about the ESF white collar boxing night!

It’s all in aid of Sue Ryder and Lauren’s bravely taking the challenge but hopefully there’ll be no black eyes as like all the fighters at the event she’ll be well protected with a head guard.

Former Face of ESP Lauren Hughes is risking her good looks to take on ESF Sports owner Emma Fidgett in the ring in what’s bound to be one of the highlights of this charity boxing event. So for newcomers to the concept of ‘white collar’ boxing these are bouts between ordinary people who fancy putting to the test some of their boxing fitness training.

On the night it’ll be Emma’s team versus her gym partner Vic’s team with 26 fighters trying out their skills in the ring in what promises to be an exciting evening. Boxing is a really great fitness regime which is becoming increasingly popular amongst men and women and Emma told ESP – “I love it! It’s the most strenuous fitness routine and is really good for all over toning. It gets your aggression out too but its increasingly popular with ladies.”

I I I I I I I

ESF opened a year and half a go in Maxwell Road in Woodston and as well as boxing classes and personal training they now offer a range of fitness classes like spinning and tummy toning. You know you’re in good hands as Emma has been in the fitness profession for 15 years and Vic is also an experienced boxing trainer. So if you fancy seeing our Lauren in action in the ring and a night of boxing action head to the Holiday Inn on March 3. Tickets are just £25 on 07595 167679 or email efidgett@btinternet.com

150 Issues of ESP This month ESP celebrates its 150th issue and you are holding in your lovely little hands what can only be described as the latest ESP issue.

COMEDY GIGS The ESP guide to where to catch some great live stand up…

MAGNERS FUNHOUSE COMEDY

February

1

The city’s newest comedy club returns to North Street Bar on Wednesday February 1 bringing some more established and up and coming stars of the comedy circuit to the Boro! This month it’s Brian Damage and Krysstal a music and comedy duo who’ve been regular fixtures at the Edinburgh Festival, James Cook the radio DJ/stand up comedian, Don Biswas with some razor sharp one-liners and compere for the night is Scott Bennett. The club returns next month on Wednesday March 21, info and tickets (£7 advance) on www.funhousecomedy.co.uk. We dropped into the December event and enjoyed a cracking laugh so give it a try.

THE VOODOO STANDS UP The year is 2012 and you are slam-bang in the middle of Mostly Funny the aptly named comedy page wot I write that has over the years provided ESP readers with a laugh fest of near epic proportions. Who can forget all those hee-larious interviews I've done with comedians, the juxtaposed photoshopped pictures of one person’s face on someone else’s for comic effect or my efforts of trying to persuade readers to go and watch comedians they’ve never heard of? Yes, it’s been both an honour and a privilege to have written a bunch of funny stuff that's revolved around the twin axis of celebritainment and popular culture, safe in the knowledge that an estimated 60,000 people will read or at least glance at it each month. If someone had told me when I joined the ESP team in 2005 that I'd go on to become the magazine’s third longest serving columnist I would've laughed noise all over your face. So as we stand and salute 150 issues of ESP, and look into the future let's remember how we got here and in particular the highlights from the last 12 months of the magazine because what a time it's been. Pep got a tattoo, Mikey got Chesney Hawkes to autograph his chest, Andy got married at his own music festival, Keith got a parrot (although I may have just imagined that) Sarah got annoyed about her telly breaking, and we said hello to Jessica Lockhart – the new Face of ESP. Hello Jess! Meanwhile, in and around Peterborough lots of stuff happened that seemed really important at the time, but in the big scheme of things didn't really matter that much. We got some nice new eating establishments, clubs and pubs have come and gone,

c

entertainment venues opened and closed and we saw POSH win the play-off final at Old Trafford. All in all, not a bad bunch of stuff but we can do better. I will not rest until I come up with the funniest page ever in the history of free local magazines, or in my attempts to get Kelly Brook back on the front cover. In ESP's 150 issues she’s appeared on the cover just once which is the same number of times that Jo Brand has! You may be interested to know that the two people who’ve appeared on the front the most (i.e. four times each) are Kylie Minogue and Alesha Dixon. And that's about it for now except for a big thanks to all of you that continue to support the various live comedy nights we help promote and inform you about. Next month I'll have some stuff about an exciting comedy event that'll be taking place as part of the Willow Festival on the Embankment in May. Now if you'll excuse me I'm off down the bookies...

Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge in Stamford sees another great line-up for stand up fans on Thursday February 23.

Dave Eastgate has taken the Australian comedy scene by storm with his unique brand of high energy stand-up, characters and music and has had rave reviews so he’s one not to be missed. Another top name on the bill is Stuart Goldsmith recently seen on ITV1’s Show Me The Funny. We caught his act recently and he’s well worth a look with his infectious banter. He’s equally sought-after as an act and an MC. Pay on the door £8 or £6 in advance from www.mamaliz.co.uk

LOCAL FOOD

It’s recently been taken over by new manager Colin Wilson – who takes pride in providing customers with tasty, fresh homemade food and real ales. We dropped by to try out the carvery in the restaurant – plus a tasty starter of prawn cocktail and delicious cheesecake for dessert, but we’ll get to that later! Out came a generous plateful of tender roast beef, plenty of vegetables and a homemade Yorkshire pud – you won’t find any Aunt Bessies here! The food didn’t last long as we ate our way through the beef and side of vegetables which consisted of carrots, broccoli, roast and fresh new potatoes, cabbage and roast parsnips so we definitely weren’t left hungry.

A PLATEFUL OF COLOUR IN 2012 Natural chemicals in plant foods are known to protect, heal and repair our bodies. Eating a diet high in various colours from plant foods will bring a host of phyto-chemicals (chemicals from plants) which are known to deliver health benefits along with the vitamins, minerals and fibre they also contain.

Originally from North America we have now cultivated the blueberry so we now have hundreds of varieties grown in many other parts of the world.

The humble blueberry has been a popular fruit for centuries and one that many of us eat today as it’s very sweet, easy to eat and can be added to foods or eaten as a snack.

The main phyto-chemicals found in the blueberry are ANTHOCYANIDINS which give the berry its distinctive purple/blue colour.

The ‘rainbow’ assortment from our plant foods bring green, red, white, blue, purple, yellow and orange pigments which deliver these special chemicals to support health.

ANTHOCYANIDINS have been shown to help in –

Each month I will cherry pick a food to focus on so first add in a splash of purple/blue colour from the BLUEBERRY.

Add berries to oats, yoghurts, pancakes, or smoothies. Most people love blueberries when really ripe but some dislike the texture, so adding them to a smoothie should remedy that!

• Protecting the brain and improving memory, they may help reduce the effects of age related conditions • Fighting urinary tract infections There are a host of other plant foods that bring these purple/blues such as blackberries, black grapes, plums and more.

• Help support vision and may reduce the risk of eye conditions such as cataracts

PERCEPTIVE

IT’S JUST PLANE BORING It may only be February but I already have a contender for ‘favourite headline of the year’ with the ET’s recent ‘Large Plane Seen Circling Above Peterborough’. The by-line to which should surely have been ‘And…?’ The article went on to say that the ET had ‘received a number of calls and emails from concerned residents about the craft’. Yeah right, because that’s exactly what I’d do if I was walking along by the Harrier and looked up to see a big plane in the sky – ring the ET. Sure, I have them on speed dial for exactly those situations! Come to think of it, I’ve just seen a lorry on the Paston Parkway, now where did I put my mobile…?

HARRY POTTY

Actor Daniel Radcliffe, who is repo rtedly worth £30 million, has revealed that he feels guilty about the amount of money he’s made from playing Harry Potter on the big screen. So you should mate, there are people slogging their guts out in this rece ssion for the minimum wage, and there’s you swanning arou nd on a brush playing quikquid or whatever it’s calle d for a salary that would probably keep the economy of Greece propped up for at least a couple of hours... To be fair, I didn’t begrudge him a penny until he started patronising us with his fake guilt but now that he has, I wish him a life of picking and pack ing in a freezing warehouse. £30million? THE SINGLE BEST THING ABOUT VALENTINE’S DAY to If you’re loved up this February, I’d like it be wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day; may s poem y slopp , roses riced filled with overp year, and jewellery. If you’re not loved up this filled never mind, I wish you a Valentine’s Day nsive with a huge heart shaped box of expe chocolates (even if you have had to buy p them yourself) and a bucket full of chea d up’ ‘love er form the into fall I Cava. Although latter category, I choose to celebrate in the to way, the only difference is that now I have two share that box of chocolates and get single glasses for the plonk; who says being doesn’t have its advantages?

BIRTHDAY BOND HAS A CASTOR ANSWER TO A lavish Hollywood party is being planned to celebrate 50 years since Dr No was released, with all six James Bonds set to attend. Peterborough, of course, has a long association with Bond with scenes from Octopussy and Golden Eye being filmed on the Nene Valley Railway. I think they should do a tour, revisiting some of the classic filming locations as part of those celebrations, how cool would it be - Daniel Craig, in his speedos, just outside Castor? I’m sure I’m not the only one who’d be very shaken, and extremely stirred.

STAR WARS: EPISODE 1 – THE PHANTOM MENACE 3D Released: February 9 Cast: Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman Director: George Lucas It was only a matter of time before George Lucas and his Star Wars universe got the 3D treatment – and the muchmaligned first prequel is the first off the conveyor belt. When I say ‘much-maligned’ I’m not talking about myself – film critics and original trilogy die-hards couldn’t wait to jump on the ‘hating’ bandwagon – because as it stands it’s still an enjoyable slice of entertainment that would better most sci-fi crud coming out of Hollywood today.

All release dates are correct at the time of going to press. Star Wars® and all characters, names and related indicia are trademark of & © 2012 Lucasfilm Ltd.

Yes, there’s wooden acting, yes, Jar Jar Binks is annoying (although less so with every watch) and yes, 3D is another Lucas cash-in – but to me it still feels like Star Wars. Of

course it doesn’t use the force in the same way as any of the original films, but it does arguably boast the best lightsaber battle – Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and ObiWan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) battling Darth Maul (Ray Park) – out of the six films. Young Anakin actor Jake Lloyd never worked again – and I might soon be joining him by putting my critical integrity on the line here – but I refuse to turn to the dark side and vilify this respectable start to a very watchable prequel trilogy. But I am a massive Star Wars fan, and I could be just a smidgen biased…

CHRONICLE

MAN ON A LEDGE

Released: February 1

Released: February 3

Up-and-coming director Josh Trank (recently linked to Fox’s reboot of Marvel’s Fantastic Four franchise) directs this very Cloverfield-looking slice of sci-fi (with no star names) which sees three high school friends gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery – but their bond is tested when they embrace their darker sides.

As a police psychologist (Elizabeth Banks) tries to talk-down a fugitive (Avatar’s Sam Worthington) threatening to jump from a Manhattan hotel rooftop, she soon realises he might have an ulterior motive – particularly with one of the biggest ever diamond heists currently in motion. Brit star Jamie Bell and Ed Harris support.

JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND Released: February 3 The man formerly known as ‘The Rock’, Dwayne Johnson, takes over from Brendan Fraser in this sequel to the 2008 hit – alongside the returning Josh Hutcherson and High School Musical’s Vanessa Hudgens – as they venture to a mythical 3D-inspired island to find Michael Caine.

THE WOMAN IN BLACK

THE VOW

Released: February 10

Released: February 10

Daniel Radcliffe hopes to prove he’s not another Mark Hamill or Christopher Reeve (although to be fair he is a multi-millionaire) by headlining his first major movie outside of Harry Potter. He stars as a young lawyer who travels to a remote village and discovers a vengeful ghost of a scorned woman terrorising the locals in this horror thriller.

Regular romantic stereotypes Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) and Channing Tatum (Dear John) team-up in this Valentine’s offering. A husband has to win the heart of his wife all over again after she wakes from a coma with memory loss following a car accident. Oscar-winner Jessica Lang and Sam ‘Jurassic Park’ Neill co-star.

Oscar-nominee Amy Adams (Enchanted) headlines this acclaimed reboot of Jim Henson’s Muppets franchise, which has garnered rave reviews the other side of the pond. The world’s biggest Muppet fan and his friends unite with Kermit, Miss Piggy and co. to take on a greedy oil tycoon (Chris Cooper) threatening to destroy the Muppet theatre.

Rising Brit star Tom Hardy (Bane in the forthcoming summer blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises) and Star Trek’s Chris Pine are CIA operatives using all the tricks of the trade to take each other out, as they duel over the heart of Reese Witherspoon, in this actioncomedy from the director of Terminator: Salvation.

GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE Released: February 17 Sony had to quickly rush this sequel to the uninspiring 2007 superhero actioner into development to stop the rights reverting back to Marvel. Nic Cage returns as the title character – alongside sidekick Moreau (Luther’s Idris Elba) – as he tries to stop the devil from taking human form.

SAFE HOUSE Released: February 24 Action veteran Denzel Washington stars as a dangerous fugitive who goes on the run with the rookie CIA operative (Ryan Reynolds) tasked with guarding him, when the safe house in which he’s remanded in custody comes under attack. RAAM’S SHADOW – GEARS OF WAR 3 DLC (360) Out now

• Function room available for private parties • See Gig Guide for bands

This prequel to the original Gears Of War is a worthy addition to the franchise canon. It’s a tad messy and seemingly underdeveloped at times, but the ability to play as comic book legend Barrick alongside his Zeta Squad comrades Minh and Tai – who both perished in Gears 1 and 2 respectively – adds a nice back story to the universe (in single or co-op) mode, despite some uneven gamer score achievements.

Mother’s day bookings now being taken

Throw in the ability to play as Raam (who Marcus Fenix slayed at the end of the original Gears) with his Kryll-killing abilities – and a notable origin story for Jace Stratton from Gears 3 – and this is well worth the Locust-blasting Microsoft points.

DUNGEON DEFENDERS (PS3/360/VITA/PC) Out now

This is a Game On first – two downloadable content games ahead of full retail titles. But this tower defence game-cum-third-person actioner deserves the plaudits as it ignites the new year on PSN and XBLA – with its addictive strategic combat. It’s undoubtedly more endearing to play co-op – within four iconic fantasy classes – as you customise your character, assemble your defences and take part in action-packed battles across this colourful cartoony world. It may be a little repetitive at times, but the looting of your opponent’s goods and levelling system makes this an original gem that should be downloaded to everyone’s console.

Wedding Dresses We can help you find the perfect wedding dress.

Thanks to Andy Clucas for reviewing Mario & Sonic at London 2012 Olympic Games

With improved (less jagged) graphics, a wealth of modes – including single one-on-one, 3-on3 arcade, and story – and a much-improved roster encompassing the worlds of Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury (Terry Bogard, Raiden and co) this is the version fans have been waiting for.

We specialise in once-worn and ex-sample wedding dresses, presented to you in excellent condition and ready for your special day.

Its main Ash Crimson story is a bit messy, loading times a tad long and it’s a bit too Japaneseinspired for a Western audience – but for hardcore fans this is a 2D ass-kicking dream.

MARIO & SONIC AT LONDON 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES (WII) Out now Unless you’ve been a prisoner in one of Bowser’s castles for the past few years, you’ll probably have heard there’s quite a big event taking place in London this summer. But despite being a fully-licensed Olympic title, the best bits of Mario and Sonic’s latest athletic outing actually have nothing to do with the games whatsoever. The all-new Dream Events and multiplayer London Party mode (which resemble Mario Galaxy more that anything else) steal the show, rendering the re-hashed Olympic events (bar the notable track and field, football and shooting) nothing more than an afterthought. It may not be gold, but despite over-familiarity it's still a worthy bronze.

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…

GRUNGE NIGHT FOR TWF Festival organiser Mark Ringer told ESP – “The festival supports all types of live music, but at the heart of the event is the will to help promote original bands who deserve recognition from the music industry and the wider public. All three bands on the Club Revolution bill are top quality and I know this is going to be a night of high quality entertainment.”

Club Revolution and The Willow Festival are to join forces to promote a grunge night at the popular live venue in Park Road this month. King Kool, The Beautiful Sleazy and Our Glorious Demonic Heist will be showcasing their respective sets in aid of supporting The Willow Festival.

BANDS UPDATE 42

www.espmag.co.uk

King Kool have been around the block more than a few times and were born of the ashes of the well loved Tribe Of Dan back in 2005. They are Dan Donovan, vocals/ guitar and Pas Struthers on drums. Uncompromising, hard hitting and direct, with solid song-writing ability, this powerhouse of an act should impress with some heavy grunge and if you’ve not been part of their experience, then make sure you check them out live. You can of course also buy their latest album Vampin, available on the Oilbug label. More info on the band on www.kingkool.co.uk The Beautiful Sleazy were live guests at The Willow Festival launch event in 2011 and were introduced to Mark Ringer by the BBC. “The

BBC gave me a heads up about the band and they agreed to play, and then promptly blew me away. Due to time constraints they could only perform three songs, but their quality was obvious; good bunch of guys too.” Having been at the launch event, I too was left wanting more than time permitted. Touring the country to rave reviews and signed to Deadset Records, the band are ever in demand fulfilling their commitments and it seems likely they’re experiencing a huge increase in popularity on the way to attaining national recognition. LONNIE DONEGAN LIVES ON Stamford Corn Exchange brings us The Lonnie Donegan Story in February. The show features Peter Donegan who’s the son of the legendary skiffle king Lonnie Donegan, who had a huge connection with this area before he died (coincidentally in Market Deeping). Lonnie’s often cited as a major influence on the generation of British musicians who became famous in the 1960s.

So there you have it. Three great bands, all for the price of a couple of pints!

Peter, who looks very much like his Dad and will be accompanied by the Lonnie Donegan Band will perform some of Lonnie's classics such as Putting On The Style, Have A Drink On Me, Rock Island Line and Pick A Bale Of Cotton and his chart number one My Old Man’s A Dustman, to name just a few. But they also delve into some of Lonnie's lesser known recordings. This, combined with original numbers written by Peter adds up to a great night of skiffle, blues, jazz and a lot of foot-stomping fun!

The gig takes place at Club Revolution, Park Road on February 11. Doors open at 7pm and tickets are £5.

It’s at Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre on Saturday February 11 at 7.30pm. Tickets from the box office on 01780 766455.

Our Glorious Demonic Heist hail from Peterborough and are a well known local act. Priding themselves on putting their songwriting ability ahead of any allegiances to a particular genre, the band have ground themselves out a following to be reckoned with on the alternative circuit.

The Influence are reforming with a new vocalist and bass guitarist and will play their first gig under the new line-up at The Bluebell in Dogsthorpe on Saturday February 25. Dave Palmer (previously of Storm) has a new band. They’re in rehearsals and are yet to get a name but are booked for their debut gig at the Cherry Tree on February 24 and will appear as the Little Dave Band. I wonder why?! Gizz Butt’s a busy guy as ever with plenty going on with all of his various bands. His Beatles functions band will no longer be known as Gizz Butt’s Red, Black and Blues – from now on look out for the Dizzy Miss Lizzys! Last month was spent recording the fourth album for his metal band The More I See. Check www.gizzbutt.com for all the latest.

LOCAL MUSICIANS DRUM UP 250 LIVE GIGS IN TWO YEARS! ECHOES OF

FLOYD

Peterborough based Pink Floyd tribute band Echoes of Floyd, will be celebrating their one year anniversary by performing a concert at Sir Harry Smith Community College in Whittlesey. It’ll also mark the start of a busy schedule of tour dates in 2012 for the band all of whom live in Peterborough, Stamford and the Deepings. As with the originals, the show blends the unique music of Pink Floyd with a superb light display. The gig’s on February 25 and doors open at 7pm.

More info can be obtained by visiting www.echoesoffloyd.co.uk or telephoning Sir Harry Smith Community College box office weekdays on 01733 703991.

Two professional musicians from the Peterborough area have reached an impressive career milestone notching up an impressive 250 live gigs between them in just two years. Robert Bull from Walton and Dave Smith from Coates, play together in no less than three different bands – as well as regularly performing as a duo at acoustic nights in pubs across the city. The impressive total comprises performances at wedding receptions, birthday parties, pub and club dates and charity fundraisers both in Peterborough and around the country. The travelling involved to their numerous gigs does take them to some impressive venues. “We are lucky enough to have played in some beautiful places – from stunning stately homes to trendy London clubs,” said Dave. The pair play together in Children Of The Revolution (www.childrenoftherev.com), a popular local function and pub band, and also The Mighty Persuaders one of the busiest wedding bands in the country.

Dave and Robert also make up two-thirds of originals band Fallen Breaks (www.fallenbreaks.com) with band mate John Wright, where their musical creativity is given free reign. Fallen Breaks’ debut album, Cause And Effect, is due to be released later this year after more than 12 months in the recording process. We will bring you an update on the timing of the album in future issues of ESP. Robert said – “I can’t quite believe we’ve accumulated that many gigs in such a short period of time. It’s been hard work and we’ve barely stopped at times – in August the pair of us played 16 gigs in 30 days! We’re both lucky to be able to make a living doing something that we love. I’d like to thank all those who’ve taken the time to come and watch us play over the past two years.” The number of live gigs does not look like running out either. Both Robert and Dave have most Friday and Saturday nights in 2012 already booked up with things on course for another busy year of gigs. I’ve seen them many times and they have the added bonus of being paid for what they plainly love doing – performing live music. For more info on Children Of The Revolution, email rob@childrenoftherev.com.

FAREWELL TO THE HOME TOWN BOYS

Another milestone this month – The Home Town Rock 'n' Roll Band (formerly The Mick Lemon Band) are hanging up their blue suede shoes and have announced the date of their farewell gig. It’s on February 3 at The Parkway Club in Maskew Avenue. They’ve been going for nearly 30 years and have traditionally performed all their gigs in aid of various charities, all based in the local area. They’ve raised in excess of £250,000 and will be missed by those good causes who benefited and their strong fan base who will have to find other venues to jive the night away. Current group members are Geoff Lovell, Stuart Smith and Jack Thomas on guitars, Graham Seal on drums and Pete Glover and Dave Cupit on vocals. We wish them all good luck, and on behalf of the thousands of people who they’ve entertained over the years, we thank them. Tickets are available on 01733 768541, at the Parkway Club in advance or pay on the door. However, as a lot of their gigs are sell outs I’d guarantee your ticket in advance.

Time to meet The Motor City

Vipers… One of the more recent additions to the local music scene is that of The Motor City Vipers. The eight-piece soul band were formed in the spring of 2009 and they’re quickly gaining a reputation as one of the city’s most exciting party bands.

Made up from a group of dedicated and professional musicians, the band lovingly recreate some of the greatest soul music from the 60s and 70s – performing a selection of hits from the Motown, Stax and Atlantic labels… with a few modern soul classics thrown in! The Vipers set list is like a who’s who of classic soul and Motown from The Temptations, Wilson Pickett and Dobie Gray, to The Supremes, Jackie Wilson and Otis Reading. Having seen them a couple of times now their massive popularity gained in such a short time is impressive.

Motown and soul has a strong history around the city, as a one time Whittlesey old boy I remember vividly the nights at the Manor Leisure and its soundtrack of Band Of Gold, Jimmy Mack and Bernadette. Those nights were rammed full of 1622 year-olds drinking Watneys Red Barrel or Babycham, so I guess it’s no surprise to find that the Vipers audience has a certain vintage to it. “People grew up with the music and still love it,” Steve Bean the Vipers erudite guitarist notes, “to say it is a bit religious is a bit strong but it is a love that our fans have carried with them for years.” The Vipers certainly stick to that formula but as well as playing the most popular and well-known Motown and northern soul tracks, they also play some of the more obscure music from the genre – but always floor-fillers. The key to the band’s success is that yes they play well known classic songs but they do it so well. Each song is crafted by hard work by musicians who know their instruments and with the affable Andy Whittaker belting out the vocals with an equally great female singer L-Jay, you get the visual look as well.

44

www.espmag.co.uk

Photos: Chris Brudenell

“There’s something about soul music that just gets people dancing,” said vocalist Andrew Whittaker, “so we work really hard as a band to keep the music fresh and exciting – trying to pick tracks that help us stand apart and get people interested in the music too.”

Great soul has a fabulous beat and providing the rhythm in the engine room of the band are Trev Hart and Andy Stuffins two well known musicians around the area. To finish the band you have the ‘Memphis Horns’ (not quite but you get the picture) – sax player Detroit Dave and trumpeter Alex Dodds faithfully recreate that memorable brass sound of Stax. “We often get asked if we’re like The Commitments, which is a difficult one to answer, because it was such a good film with a great soundtrack,” said Andrew. Maybe another nod towards the Stax label, after all legendary Stax house guitarist Steve Cropper was in the Commitments set up. “It would be fantastic to be considered as ‘cool’; and we do have a trumpet player who we call ‘The Trouser Snake’, but the similarity ends there. We certainly don’t argue like the characters in the film!”

Cool? Well yes because they play cool songs and they play them with energy and fun. I am fortunate enough to have been over to the Stax museum in Memphis twice and the site has it’s own academy for young kids next door. The kids playtime has the music of Otis, Booker T, Rufus Thomas and the like being piped into the play ground. Whilst Steve thinks it may not be a religion let me tell you, in some parts of the world it just about comes as close as anything else. If you need a sermon from the Vipers there next gig is at the Brewery Tap on Saturday March 31. The night’s being organised as a fundraiser for Sue Ryder Care at Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough, with tickets priced at £10 each. The gig also includes local band Rocket 57, plus soul DJs Julz Roberts, Ollie Jones and Steve Walsh. Tickets are available by credit card from the Brewery Tap, either in person or by telephone on 01733 358500.
