LUKE’S BACK BANYAN TREE ONGETS THE BOX A FRESH INSIDE NO.9 LOOK Not only is the food delicious but we have to say the Banyan Tree restaurant on Westgate is looking hot too after a fantastic refurbishment! Owner Dinesh Odedra told ESP – “We’ve started our refurbishment and the first phase has been completed. We took feedback from our customers on what they’d like to see us do first. There was demand for more space downstairs. So, we extended the bar and lounge area and have also created a new space on the ground floor which is perfect for large groups booking their Christmas parties. Photo: BBC/Gary Moyes

FILMS FOR FEBRUARY @ THE JOHN CLARE CINEMA It’s award season! Which means you should be prepared for a deluge of acceptance speeches and shiny trinkets coming to a screen near you. Of course you’ve probably seen most of the nominees by now, so why not get down to the John Clare Cinema at the Central Library and see some great films perhaps a little less publicised.
Jackson LIVEs on @ THE cREssET Fans of Michael Jackson, brace yourselves as Forever Jackson, Europe's number one Jackson tribute show, re-ignites the magic of the legendary King of Pop at the Cresset on Friday February 28.

First off on Thursday February 2 is The Kings Of Summer. Three high-school boys evade their overbearing families by constructing a new home in the nearby woods hoping the task will make men of them; instead, inevitably, they grow bumfluffed, hungry and terrified of the wildlife. Featuring Parks & Recreation's peerlessly brusque Nick Offerman there's a lot of warm-hearted and commendably daft comedy in this 90 minute flick.
Next up on Thursday February 13 is The Wall. The wall is invisible and it drops without warning, trapping the film's heroine (Martina Gedeck) within a forested valley in the Austrian Alps. It’s hard to believe a film so minimal could contain so much. Julian Roman Pölsler's bewitching debut manages to be all at once a creepy sci-fi parable, a feminist Robinson Crusoe and a clear-eyed ode to the wonders of nature.
KIDNAPPED @ STAMFORD ARTS An adventure tale for all the family, Kidnapped tells the story of Davie Balfour as he survives shipwreck and murder to dramatically escape to the Highlands of Scotland. Adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson's novel it’s set against the fierce social and political backdrop of 1760’s Scotland. Gripping and fast paced this adventure story is packed full of physical storytelling and imagination. Sell A Door Theatre Company launch their 2014 season with this highly imaginative re-telling of the classic story perfect for young and old audiences alike. Catch it at Stamford Arts Centre on Thursday February 6. Tickets are £12 (£10) £8.50 students and groups on 01780 763203.
THE SPECTACULAR 60’S SHOW If you’re a fan of the sixties vibe you can relive the hits of the era at this great show at the Cresset on Thursday February 20. This show reunites some of the greatest bands from the decade when pop music ruled the world. The line up features The Merseybeats, Wayne Fontana, The Ivy League and local heroes Sounds Force 5. This is your chance to sing along to the original songs performed by the original bands. Tickets are £24 on 01733 265705.
911 AT THE CRESSET Nineties boyband 911 are back and are coming to Peterborough! Tickets for their show which will be held at The Cresset on Tuesday March 25 are on sale now! 911 were one of only five music acts to score 10 consecutive Top Ten hits in the 90’s and the band enjoyed success with four hit albums between 1997-1999 including the top ten hit albums There It Is and Moving On. They've recently come back into the public eye thanks to the ITV2 show the Big Reunion and the band are touring again.
On Thursday February 20 it’s the turn of Shun Li and the Poet. This film features a Chinese bartender working to pay off his debt and a grizzled Yugoslavian fisherman/poet, not the most likely of duos. As the pair develops a hesitant bond they come across obstacles, of which their friendship must endure. Filmed in the extraordinary environs of the Venetian lagoon, this film is haunting and affecting with visual poetry to spare.
Tickets are £23.50 on 01733 265705 or by visiting www.cresset.co.uk. Alex Jones

The final film showing this month on Thursday February 27 is For Those in Peril. In this affecting fable George MacKay plays Aaron, the sole survivor of a mysterious fishing accident in which several lives, including his brother’s were lost. Stigmatised by the insular community who blame him for the unexplained tragedy (Aaron can remember nothing) and enraptured by fairy-tale memories of a sea devil, Aaron is drawn back to the dark waters to find answers. With its shifting visual formats this is an arresting and hypnotic feature debut. For more visit www.peterboroughartscinema.co.uk Alex Jones

TIME FOR A
‘SPOT’
OF FUNDRAISING… Time to join the dots, see spots and raise some cash for RNIB. If you’re feeling charitable and want to help raise some cash for a good cause, it’s time to hold your very own Dotty Day event. To celebrate Louis Braille’s revolutionary communication system for blind and partially sighted people, which uses a series of raised dots, RNIB the leading sight loss charity, is encouraging people in Peterborough to ‘go dotty’ to help support people with sight loss in the area. There are lots of ways for individuals, schools and workplaces to ‘go dotty’ from dressing in polka dots for the day, having a dotty cake sale or something truly dotty like bathing in a tub of baked beans.
“You have to be a bit dotty to work in fundraising, which is why I love our Dotty Day so much.” Emma Long, fundraising manager for RNIB, seen here getting in a spin with ESP’s Mikey Clarke, told us – "You have to be a bit dotty to work in fundraising, which is why I love our Dotty Day so much. It gives everybody the opportunity to be a little bit silly and have great fun whilst supporting a good cause so please do get involved. “There’s so much you can do to get involved including wearing dotty clothing to work, holding a dotty cake sale at your local church or social group or hosting your very own ‘come dine with me’ style dotty dinner party. Whatever you decide to do you will know you’re helping blind and partially sighted people." There are an estimated 4,640 people affected by sight loss in the Peterborough area, and every penny you raise will go towards the vital work RNIB does in promoting and supporting the independence and inclusion of blind and partially sighted people.

H G I H G N I D I R ’S E K LU ! S E I R E S IN NEW Peterborough actor Luke Pasqualino slammed it in the opening episode of BBC One’s fantastic new version of The Musketeers… and made ‘Fight me now or die on your knees’ his new catchphrase. Finally leaving skateboarding Freddie from Skins and his teenage angst behind, Luke manned up as D’Artagnan with swords and horses and err… ladies! The opening episode grabbed over 7 million viewers and Twitter went mad with #Musketeers messages praising our local hero and clearly winning him a fair few female fans.

The former Walton school boy, who celebrates his 24th birthday this month, is one of a bunch of young guns from the city including Aston Merrygold from JLS and Olympic gymnast Louis Smith who’ve hit the big time and this prime slot has seen his acting career reach a whole new level.

Luke’s dad Pep runs the Image International hair salon in Spalding and Luke says his close relationship helped him as D’Artagnan in The Musketeers – “The relationship he had with his father is a huge thing for me, me and my dad get on like a house on fire, we are like best friends. I drew on that, so when D'Artagnan’s father dies I was just thinking about what it would be like if my own father passed away – it would be hugely difficult for me. But really it was the friendship and loyalty – I'm from an Italian background so those ideals are written in stone. I tried to push that out as much as possible.”
www.espmag.co.uk
There’s been a brilliant reaction to the show so far and this grittier, sexier version has had some great reviews. “I hope the audience takes it for what it is,” says Luke “I don’t want them to think this is anything like the way The Musketeers has been portrayed before. I think we have a very different vibe to it – the fact that we’re actually using muskets for example. It’s not a fairy tale, that’s not what we are making, it’s very true to life. “The Musketeers on one side are trying to fight with their loyalties and their passion about being a Musketeer balanced with their own personal compulsions, be that women or gambling. They have to balance that whilst still having a duty to protect the king no matter what’s going on in their own lives. They have to do what is right no matter what, and I think that is a really cool story and message to tell the audience.”
We’ve all been glued to the sofa on Sunday nights ever since so don’t miss the latest episode on BBC One at 9pm! Follow ESP on Twitter and keep an eye on www.espmag.co.uk for all the latest.

E C N A D F SCHOOL O IS HERE THE ESP
Get fit, have fun and get in the groove at the ESP School of Dance! Whether you want to learn some serious moves or just have a laugh getting a little fitter, one of the classes at the ESP School of Dance will be for you. Head choreographer Nicole Saunders has years of experience and is running a series of classes across the city. Nicole’s been dancing since she was 3-years-old. She’s trained in ballet, tap, musical theatre, salsa, commercial and street dance so has a great grasp of all styles, and well, you’ve seen what she can do at our ESP events! The first classes to be announced for this month will be on Mondays at the Voyager school in Walton – 6.15pm to 7pm for ages 11-16 years, and 7.15pm to 8.15pm for adults 18 - 80 years! Secondly there are Thursday night classes at Werrington centre for adults from 6.15pm to 7.15pm.
Nicole’s keen to hear from you about where you would like to see classes in future so just email her if you’re interested. All age ranges will learn all styles of dance including 70's, 80's, jazz, cabaret, street/hip hop, commercial (i.e. Pussy Cat Dolls style) and a teensy bit of salsa! The age range is 7-9yrs, 10-13yrs, 14-17yrs and adult (18+). In the future there’ll be an opportunity for you to join an ‘elite’ group of dancers who will attend competitions/auditions etc around the country – you may even be picked to dance at events with the crew! Nicole says – “I love to encourage people to express themselves through dance, and just have fun. It’s the easiest way to lose weight with the least amount of pain. And it's a good way to learn some new dance moves to practice on the dance floor at parties!” To register your interest and receive further details on the ESP School of Dance, please email nicole.danceandevents@gmail.com and look out for more in the next issue and online at www.espmag.co.uk.

BEING UPFRONT ABOUT PASSION

MY WORD OF THE MONTH
LOVE
With it being the month of lurve here’s a reminder of what we tolerate from our other halves: Trumping, burping, scatter cushions, scented candles, pubic hair sink blockages, standing on hair clips, hair extension strands in your dinner, make-up ruined bedroom carpet, R&B compilation CD’s, giant spider dreams and too many garden pots.
BACK IN THE DAY... There was a brief time during the mid to late 1990s when the (proper) nightclub scene in Peterborough was brimming with choice. We had Rinaldo’s, Quo Vadis, L’Aristo’s and 5th Avenue.
SHOW HER YOU CARE THIS VALENTINE’S So, it’s that time of year again where it must be written somewhere in history that men have to take out a loan on the house to spend on the woman in their life for Valentine’s Day. But times are hard and throwing around copious amounts of money to tell her she’s number one is like a broken pencil, pointless. To a real woman, actions and words speak louder than Karen Millen and Jimmy Choo.
L’Aristo’s was a real nightclub. The layout was excellent and the vibe was one of sophistication and class. It was so good that being stuck out in Fengate was never an issue, as there was no other place worth going to.
Making her indoors happy on February 14 needn’t cost you a penny. All you have to do is think smart and say smart (even if you don’t mean it) just for this one day and there’s a good chance you’ll be in for some slap ‘n’ tickle when the lights go down.
At the opposite end of the scale was 5th Avenue – your bread and butter nightclub. When I say opposite end, that’s not to say 5th was a bit ropey, it did what it said on the tin and was packed to the rafters most weekends.
• Put the toilet seat down (I know, grit your teeth, it’s just for one day)
If you wanted cheese then 5th was the place to go. If you wanted themed party nights then 5th was the place to go. And at the time 5th was also the place to go for special appearances by celebrity DJs and soap stars. Credit must be given to owners Howard and Suzanne Cooper who knew what the people wanted and gave it to them. They made a formidable partnership even if I never saw Howard smiling (it was a personality trait of his). It was a time when fading stars all of a sudden became DJs and one of many was 1980s pop star Boy George. Boy, or George as I called him, played a set at 5th and I got to interview him afterwards. He told me I was “quite good looking for a heterosexual” and to be honest that’s the only thing I remember from that interview. 5th Avenue and Central Park next to it had their place in the city’s night scene. If anyone has photos of good times in 5th then please email them to me so we can keep the memories alive.
This is how to be a great Valentine without reaching for your wallet:
• Burp and fart as per normal but say ‘pardon me’ • Clip your toenails in bed instead of perched on the kitchen worktop • Point out how her hair extensions give her hair more body • Compliment the citrus fresh scent of her fake tan • Tell her what a good driver she is • Let her handle the TV remote, but not too long to breed confidence
FISH ‘n’ CHIPS 80’s STYLE You’ll find more salt in a packet of these than in the Red Sea but I don’t care because one of the best snacks of the glorious 1980s is back. Burton’s Fish ‘n’ Chips was the savoury biscuit snack we were all munching on as kids, probably because we were hooked on the eye-watering, salt and vinegar flavour hit. I remember how the newspaper-look packaging inspired me to write a story about how I loved my local chippy. I posted it to Burton’s but never got a reply. That marked the point when I was put off journalism as a career. I owe you Burton’s Fish ‘n’ Chips. Now please bring back tomato flavoured Wotsits and Delight chocolate bars. Remember them?
• Suggest buying flowers for the mother-in-law

This month I bring you a new phenomenon that I predict will soon take the world by storm. Ladies and gentleman I introduce to you: the ‘foodie’. Remember, you saw it here first.

PEP’S LOCAL HEROES:
MICHAEL VINCENT He’ll be a tad embarrassed at me calling him a hero but Chromasport & Trophies owner Michael Vincent is worthy of this accolade alone for simply being a positive human being. ‘Mickey’, as he’s more commonly known, bore an uncanny resemblance to Kenny Everett in the 1970s. And although he wasn’t quite as wealthy as the celebrity comedian, Mickey did share – along with Kenny’s looks – the comedian’s great sense of humour. Today Mickey is no different. There’s always a joke or two in him and sayings like – “I’ve got socks older than you” – never seem to tire when I’m with him. I’ve known Mickey for about 15 years or more and I can honestly say even though I know he’s had ups and downs during this time, he’s never been without a smile and a positive outlook on life. A few minutes with him and I remember to count my blessings. There are other people who share the same qualities but among the many strengths Mickey has, those of his observation and compassion are his strongest. He’s ‘studied’ me over the years and is well aware of my tribulations and triumphs. Best of all he understands the journey I’m on and is one of my best advocates. Mickey’s passion for Peterborough is immense and it’s genuine. He’s a supporter of young people and sport and is a believer in encouraging and nurturing home-grown talent. “Yes you can!” is another hallmark saying of his and it’s one I always remind myself of when sometimes I think I can’t. The city’s business and sports community has a lot to thank Mickey for. But most of all I’d like to thank Mickey for never failing to hold a meeting (with me at least) without a packet of chocolate digestives to devour. Who said business and pleasure don’t mix?
SUPER NAKED IS MY STYLE I’ve always loved the word naked and when I got into motorbikes and discovered naked was a term referring to bikes stripped of their fairings and other body parts to show their raw beauty, I bought one. So, you can imagine my excitement when BMW announced they were making a naked version of their world-beating superbike – the S 1000 RR. They’ve called it the S 1000 R (just knocked an R off it) and it’ll be in the Hampton-based Balderston showroom in March ready for anyone who wants a test ride (booking early is advised). The S 1000 R is directly derived from the S 1000 RR superbike and uses its same
innovative technology. It comes with 160 hp on tap as well as race ABS, automatic stability control and a choice of two riding modes as standard. BMW’s engineers have increased the low and mid-range power and torque, which means it’s ideal on twisty singlecarriageway roads. And that’s where I intend to ride it this summer. Its sports bike brother raised the bar when it was introduced in 2010 and I have a feeling the naked version of the S 1000 is going to be even more fun without its clothes on. To book a ride, call Balderston on 01733 565470.
PRO BOXING SHOW AT THE CRESSET Fight fans are in for a treat when two title bouts will be played out at The Cresset on Saturday March 8. Chris Jenkinson and Freddie Turner will go toe to toe in a British Masters Gold Light Middleweight Championship tussle, while Joel McIntyre and a not yet named opponent fight for the vacant International Masters Light Heavyweight title. There’s a great undercard line-up too including hot prospects Tommy Martin from St Neots and Jordan Gill of Chatteris. For tickets call: 07595 167679.
The Saturdays’ Mollie King is challenging you to Ramp up the Red and go as red as you dare on Friday February 7 to fight against heart disease. Mollie explains, “I’m so excited to be supporting the BHF on February 7 by Ramping up the Red and joining the fight against the UK’s single biggest killer, coronary heart disease. “By organising a Ramp up the Red party with friends, families and colleagues, you will be raising funds that will go directly towards vital research, support and care to help mums, dads, grandparents or babies born with heart problems. “It’s so easy to organise and you’ll be helping the BHF to continue to fund life-saving heart research in the UK to help everybody who suffers from a heart problem. It is a cause that is particularly important to me, as my grandfather sadly passed away after suffering a heart attack when I was younger.” Whether it’s wearing red make up, donning some
fetching red trousers, a traffic-stopping little red dress or painting your nails a scarlet shade, the BHF is urging you to go as red as you dare and organise a Ramp up the Red party with friends, families and colleagues to raise funds that will go directly towards vital research, support and care for those suffering with heart disease. Did you know that coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer? It kills nearly one in six men and more than one in ten women and is responsible for almost 74,000 deaths in the UK each year, an average of 200 people each day. There are currently 2.3 million people in the UK living with coronary heart disease. If you want to get involved with Ramp up the Red, simply encourage your colleagues, friends or pupils to go red for a day. To order your FREE fundraising pack, visit www.bhf.org.uk/red or call 0800 0316 316 to sign up.
RAMP UP THE RED EVENTS There are lots of Ramp up the Red events already organised and if you let ESP know about yours on office@espmag.co.uk we’ll add them to our what’s on list on www.espmag.co.uk 7th February New Vision Fitness, Whittlesey (formally Manor Leisure Centre) A day of exercise classes for you to try. All classes are suitable for the older exerciser or those new to exercise and will last for one hour. £2.50 a class or the whole day for £4.00 9.30 Chair based – Exercises in or around the chair 10.45 Mature Movers – A class that will keep you moving 12.00 Gentle Exercise – An aerobics based exercise class 13.30 Pilates – A core stability work out Wear something red! Refreshments will be available. 13th/14th February The BHF volunteers will be out in force at ASDA in Rivergate with the British Heart Foundation mascot and bag packing.
Not sure how to wear red? ESP’s style guru Sue Donnelly tells you how it’s done… It’s the month of love so forget the little black dress and add some drama instead with some ‘notice me’ red! 1. If you're wearing red near your face, choose carefully. Some reds will be 'warm' and more yellow/orange in tone, such as scarlet. Others will be more pink/blue such as magenta. Choose according to your own skin tone. Wearing the wrong one can make you look quite ill. This includes lipsticks, which should be
18
www.espmag.co.uk
looked at in daylight rather than store lighting, to correctly assess the colour. 2. Red is a powerful colour. It has the longest wavelength so we see it first, hence red traffic lights and vehicle brake lights. It means you will definitely stand out from the crowd. Wearing it top to toe signals you want attention! If you wear red shoes others will look at your feet, so be aware of where you want the attention that red will bring.
3. Red lingerie is very sexy. You can wear it under most colours because it tends to disappear and merge with the skintone. Even if noone else knows you are wearing it, you can still feel secretly powerful and sexy. 4. It's a myth that red haired men and women can't wear red. They look fabulous in it, as long as they choose the right shade.

QUINNY PUTS HIS TALENTS TO THE TEST ON THE VOICE
6 Morris Court, Yaxley, PE7 3GJ

We’re excited to tell you that Peterborough musician John Quinn from local four piece band The Fleeting Minds, has auditioned for BBC One’s The Voice and will appear on the show on Saturday February 1. on the BBC programme The Voice. There are those detractors who don't like talent shows and I am one of them however, any national exposure is good.
Whatever happens, it’s absolutely fantastic to see another talented city musician appear on national TV. John is following in the footsteps of singer/songwriter Murray Hockridge from the city who was picked by Team Danny and made it through to the battle rounds of the show. Many of you will be familiar with John through his band The Fleeting Minds playing indie rock with a twist of psychedelia. They’re about to release a new single and video which ESP will be covering soon. Long serving ESP columnist Andy Slater produced a series of features profiling the city’s musical talent and interviewed John but has been a mate of his for years. Andy says – “Good to see my old mate John Quinn pushing himself forward to get

At the time of writing we can’t reveal more but will have full coverage on www.espmag.co.uk and will be chatting to John about the experience. Follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook to be the first to hear.
“I said when I interviewed John back in February 2011 he is a talented singer and songwriter and I stick by that. Not only that he’s a nice guy too so I for one wish him well on his quest for national recognition. If hard work, talent and perseverance are the required elements for the show he should do well.
“It will be good for the Boro as well, a recognition not only for John but for all the other fine musicians in this city that have in all probability encouraged John all the way. Good luck John, whatever happens I hope it goes well for you!” And so do we! Make sure you watch and support John whatever the outcome. ESP’s Mikey Clarke finds his ‘Voice’ and backs Kylie to win…
L
ike most blokes (I assume), I often lose the battle for the remote control on a Saturday night. When the missus originally announced that we were going to watch BBC1’s The Voice, I sulked a little. After a few minutes though, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. No producer planned sob stories, no joke acts looking for 15 minutes of fame, but quality singers and some world class coaches. This year saw some changes to the judging panel – and the BBC didn’t disappoint with the announcement that superstar Kylie Minogue would be a new addition. With over 68 million records sold worldwide, she’s one of the world’s most loved artists. And she’s also not too bad on the eyes either. So why did the lady who’s achieved so much already decide to take on this show as her next challenge? The pop diva herself explained, “I watched the first two series and I really got into the show. I did think about it for a while, as it was such a big commitment for me. I have never done anything like this before – but it feels like the right time and now I am doing it, the overall experience has been amazing.”
Photo: BBC/Ray Burmiston
One of my favourite parts of the show, along with many other viewers, is the
26

blind auditions over the first few weeks. A genius concept that I’m sure Simon Cowell wished he’d thought of first. “They were really nerve-wracking as to when you should press the button,” says Kylie. “So many things were going through my mind. Even though Tom has done the show before, he still said it was nerve-wracking, too, because you are still dealing with a fresh batch of people. And I wish everyone at home could experience this.” I admit to shutting my eyes on a few shows and having a go at this blind judging myself. Come on, we’ve all done it, right? But Kylie says, “It is not as simple as watching it at home! You think it is a guy and then it is a girl. You just don’t know. You form a picture in your mind from your set of life experiences about what the voice says to you, and then you turn around and it is very different. The hardest thing I have found is then having to say no to people.” I can see why that would be difficult, as there’s been some amazing talent on The Voice over the past two years. The first series saw talented local singer/songwriter, and friend of ESP Magazine, Murray Hockridge from Peterborough appearing on the show. Now another talented singer/songwriter from Peterborough, John Quinn from
local band The Fleeting Minds, is giving it a try on Saturday February 1 so it's fingers crossed again! Kylie’s been a breath of fresh air in the audition phase, with her bubbly personality and enthusiasm for all the acts. But, the other three judges, Will-i-am, Sir Tom Jones and Ricky Wilson, gave her a run for her money when it came to choosing the best acts. So, what kind of coach will Kylie be? “I am strict if I have to be. I want them to feel they have the support from me. I have been advising them on things that I have learned as a performer like light and shade, delivering the song in a certain way or showing them how to use the stage in a certain way.” There’ll certainly be no messing around on Kylie’s team, it’s all serious stuff. “I would be disappointed if they didn’t take it seriously. The public want to know they have got someone who is giving it their best shot. This is an amazing opportunity for them all.” I’m one of those people who like to think I’ve got a bit of a singing voice, especially after a few pints. Perhaps it’s never too late to give it a try? I might consider that for next year. But would Kylie, after all her years of stardom, have ever considered going on a show like
The Voice to find fame? “I get asked this all the time but I think as a teenager, I probably would have loved to have gone on it. I think I would have daydreamed about going on it. Would I have made it through? I have no idea. I did make a demo when I was 17. I was already acting by then but I did have the bravery and guts to do that.” And finally, for the big question. Does Kylie think she has what it takes to win? “It would be the cherry on the top. I actually think, however, it is more about the experience of doing it. It has to be – that is what you are aiming for of course. It is like a lot of life experience – there are ups and downs. I console myself by reminding myself that the contestants do know the rules of the show and so it can’t be a happy ending for everyone. But hopefully they will learn from it and come back another year.” And we hope you stay for many more series too Kylie. Tune into The Voice on BBC One every Saturday evening to see Kylie in her new judging role and hear some amazing singing talent.

Virtual unknown Joel Kinnaman (Safe House) takes over the role of Alex Murphy (made famous by Peter Weller) – a loving husband, father and all-round good cop – who’s critically injured in the line of duty, and gets turned into a part-man, partrobot police officer by multinational conglomerate OmniCorp. As the greedy corporation envision a ‘Robocop’ in every city across the world – and billions for their shareholders in the process – they never counted on one thing: there’s still a man inside the machine pursuing justice. Gary Oldman, Samuel L Jackson, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish (Sucker Punch) and Jay Baruchel (This is the End) - and of course classic robot-villain ED 209 complete a very impressive looking cast.

Matthew McConaughey (Mud and Killer Joe) continues his hotstreak – snagging a Golden Globe for Best Actor. Looks like it will be a shoot-out with 12 Years a Slave’s Chiwetel Ejiofor after receiving an Oscar nom for Best Actor too, with this acclaimed turn as a hustling AIDS victim who plays the system to get lifesaving medication.
Latest Hollywood star Chris Pratt – who’s about to take the lead in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy – voices an ordinary LEGO figure who’s enlisted to help save the world in this computer-generated animation based on the famous toy bricks. Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill and Will Arnett co-star as Superman, Green Lantern and Batman respectively.
George Clooney directs and stars in this World War II comedy-tinted drama, which sees an unlikely platoon tasked to rescue art masterpieces from Nazi thieves during the height of the conflict. An all-star cast also boasts Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, a rare appearance from Bill Murray, and The Artist’s Best Actor Oscar winner Jean Dujardin.
Brit star Nick Frost looks to spice up Valentine’s with his first major Hollywood lead role as a former salsa prodigy attempting a comeback years after his career was ruined. Rashida Jones is the woman who reignites the Latin fire of Frost’s under-confident and overweight character, with Bridesmaids’ Chris O’Dowd and Ian McShane in support.
This heart-warming New York-set tale sees Colin Farrell’s burglar fall for an heiress (Jessica Brown Findlay) as she dies in his arms. But when he learns she has the gift of reincarnation, he sets out on a miraculous century-spanning journey to save her. Oscarwinners Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly round off an impressive cast.

GRAN TURISMO 6 (PS3) Out now Sony made sure it didn’t leave PS3 owners short-changed – releasing their premier racing game on that console AFTER the PS4 had been released. Yet again, they haven’t quite hit the jackpot with their ‘Real Driving Simulator’ – but there’s much to admire with this sixth instalment of the franchise.
####
It handles like a dream, has some notable circuits – including the addition of Silverstone – and has better customisation than the last outing. Only niggling problems lie with odd car choices and in-game audio – which leaves GT6 lacking the driving killer-instinct – but everything else is virtually flawless, which ultimately leaves it as arguably the best of its ilk.

ASSASSIN’S CREED: LIBERATION HD (360/PS3/PC) Out now Fans who can’t get enough of Assassin’s Creed (and don’t have a PS Vita) until the next instalment inevitably arrives later this year – can get a bit of a fix with this.
##
This HD version of the game (now available on XBLA/PSN) - which was released exclusively on Playstation's handheld console last year - sadly comes across as a poor relation on the home consoles, with it lacking in most areas compared to the previous incarnations. There’s an interesting female lead protagonist, Aveline, and an intriguing 1765 Louisiana-set world – but it generally lacks consistency to be truly noteworthy.

BIOSHOCK INFINITE: BURIAL AT SEA – EP 1 (PS3/360/PC) Out now Even though it won’t win any awards for ingenuity – Bioshock fans will love this return to Rapture.

This downloadable content for Bioshock Infinite allows the famed undersea world to be built from scratch using the same game mechanics and Unreal Engine 3, as Booker DeWitt and Elizabeth return – in a different place and time that shares similarities to Infinite’s world of Columbia.
The ULTIMATE Combat Gaming Experience Airsoft is a military simulation game similar to paintball. It costs a lot less to play, it hurts less and uses realistic looking replica weapons.
Gleefully set just before things turn sour in Rapture, this holds worthwhile novelty value – even though the scheduled second episode needs to be longer than this. .

MOTORPOINT SELLS CAR EVERY 5.86 MINUTES! The UK’s largest car supermarket, which is located on Edgerley Drain Road in Fengate, has experienced a 21.5 per cent increase in the total number of new and nearly new cars sold compared with the previous year – equivalent to one every 5.86 minutes.
and the Ford Fiesta like the one I’m graciously presenting was the most popular choice among customers. This news comes as Motorpoint was recently named the UK’s Number One Independent Car Retailer by Motor Trader magazine.
Last year customers saved more than £230m off list price buying their cars from Motorpoint
Manager Lee Arnold told me – “Our commitment to providing industry-leading
levels of choice, value and service is reflected in last year’s increase in car sales. We’re taking nothing for granted though and we are currently investing heavily in all areas of the business to ensure that we continue to deliver an experience that is second to none for many years to come.”
DRIVE BETTER… FOR YOUR GIRLFRIEND’S SAKE The SaferPeterborough Partnership is running the For My Girlfriend campaign again this month to encourage young male drivers to take more responsibility when taking to the road. Road crashes are the single killer of young people in the UK and worldwide. Young drivers are involved in one in four fatal and serious crashes, despite making up one in eight driver licence holders. Over the last three years 58 people aged 17 to 25 were killed or seriously injured on Peterborough
roads. Another 628 young people were slightly injured in crashes. Research shows young drivers, in particular males, are at much higher risk of crashing than older drivers. Therefore, they’re more at risk of losing their lives or being seriously injured on the road, and also endangering the lives of their passengers, who are often young too, or other road users. Take a look at the website www.fmg.org.uk for more advice.
TWO FOR ONE RIDER OFFER @ CAM RIDER CAM Rider in Werrington is offering two people motorcycle training courses for the price of one until the end of February. The full test course applies to both people taking it at the same time and riders are required to have passed their motorcycle theory test at least seven days in advance of their Module 1 test. The instructors and motorcycles at CAM Rider are the best on offer and now’s the time to get that bike licence ahead of the summer. For full details call CAM Rider on 01733 320820.

SEND US IN YOUR PRIDE AND JOY If you like showing off your car or motorbike at every opportunity then be our guest and show it off on this page. Email us a photo (high resolution) of your pride and joy and tell us why you love it so much and it might make it into the mag. Simples! To kick us off I’ve included a photo of a car I should never have sold. My Fiat Coupe 20v turbo meant more to me than life itself. It had a glorious five cylinder two litre twin cam engine and a quality tan leather interior you’d find only in Ferraris. She had to go after I was made redundant from a job at the time. I bought her in 2003 for £6,500 and sold her 50,000 trouble free miles later in 2007 for £3,800. The Fiat Coupe is fast becoming recognised as a modern classic and the best examples are fetching more than £5,000. My old car R153 GNB is still alive according to the DVLA tax database. I’m tempted to track her down…

FORZA TYRES
I’d have to agree. The Cup has an explosive engine but it’s perfectly tolerable in everyday driving too. The French have a knack of producing brilliant hot hatches and one of the most exciting that springs to mind is the rally winning Peugeot 205 GTI. I’ve been lucky enough to own the 1.9 model (followed by a 309 GTI) and I would give my right arm for a drive in one again. The 205 was more than a match for the Golf GTI and for many it was and still is the only proper hot hatch ever made.

USED CAR BUYING MYTHS BUSTED Taking advice from friends or tips from the wrong people can lead used car buyers to believe common misconceptions, warns HPI, the independent vehicle information provider. Here are some myths, busted. Myth 1: You've paid for it so you own it. Myth-buster: Not necessarily. Registered keeper is NOT the same as legal owner. If the car is stolen or still on finance, it technically belongs to someone else (the original keeper, or the finance house). You might be the registered keeper, but you are not the legal owner and you stand to lose the car and the money you paid for it. Myth 2: It's such a bargain; you'll need to move fast! Myth-buster: Be suspicious. If you were the seller, would you knock the car down to a bargain price and make less than you could? There's probably something fishy going on. It is very
likely that the car is either mechanically very suspect or could even be stolen/cloned. Ask lots of questions, and if you're still unsure, walk away. Myth 3: It's illegal to sell a car that's been written-off Myth-buster: Any vehicle that has been declared a total loss (often referred to as "a write-off") by an insurance company has been done so because the insurer believes it is not economical to repair the vehicle. This may be either because the repair itself outweighs the current value of the vehicle, or the cost of any replacement vehicle for the period would end up outweighing the value of the vehicle. When the vehicle is written off, it is placed into an industry recognised damage classification, depending on its condition. A or B category write-offs are vehicles which it is recommended should have been crushed and never returned to the road, Category C and D vehicles can be returned to the road, but buyers must be sure that they are roadworthy before they drive them.
Myth 4: Buying at a 'mutually convenient' public location is safe Myth-buster: This is a common ruse used by criminals selling stolen or cloned vehicles. If you're buying privately, you should always view the car at the registered keeper's address, as detailed on the V5. Never buy a car in a service station, a car park, a lay by or a pub car park (unless the seller is the Landlord!) Myth 5: A spouse can sell a car on behalf of their wife / husband Myth-buster: When buying privately only buy a vehicle from the registered keeper otherwise it is technically classed as stolen as the partner has no legal right to sell the vehicle. Ask for ID and compare it to the V5 documentation. If there are discrepancies you're not happy with, find another vehicle to buy.

At just £5 this set includes essential lip care balm, pearly shine lip balm, raspberry rose lip butter and original lip butter to provide an indulgent sensorial experience. Lips will be left feeling velvety soft and silky smooth meaning they’re ideal for puckering up (NOTE TO ALL MEN!).
This season is all about natural nudes and barely there make up. So for those of you that prefer a softer look this is ideal with glimmering natural shades and pretty pinks.
This Valentine’s Day all you need is love, love and maybe some nice smellies from The Body Shop. Their Chocolate & Strawberry Shower Gel Duo, £6, will leave your loved one sweet-smelling and seductively soft. Or why not really spoil them for choice with Heart Lollipop Lip Butters, £15. From fruity to nutty to chocolate these heart shaped lollipops are a real gesture of love! Whatever you decide to buy I’m sure it will float your other half’s love boat. Us girls always want to look good (especially with Valentine’s Day coming up) but whether you prefer a softer look with pink shades or want to turn heads with bright reds, there’s something for everyone out there this season.
MAC’s Magnetic Nude collection captures the trend effortlessly with a combination of peachy nudes, fine golds and sheer pearls. Their Extra Dimension Eye Shadow has a metallic effect to give a highly polished look. My favourite is Sweet Heat, £17, a warm beautiful beige shimmer. Pair with their tinted lipglass in Overspiced (a mid tone muted coral) and Extra Dimension Blush in At Dusk (cool pink) for a gorgeously girly glow that’s both subtle yet sexy. Bobbi Brown’s Limited Edition Nude Glow collection is perfect for this time of year as it combines ‘luminosity with skin tone enhancing colour’ to give you a New Year glow that I’m sure we all want. There are four products in the collection each of which come in three different shades to work with your skin tone; light, medium and dark. The nude eye palettes are made up of matte, soft shimmer and sparkling textures which can easily be layered taking them from day to night. They’re so pretty and versatile and really do wake up the eyes. Try putting a little of the gold shade in the inner corners to open up the eye. The lipsticks are more of a tint than full on colour and come in gold pink, fresh pink and rose berry shades all at £14. The nails polishes look fab and take that wintry grey out of your hands and are available in cream, pink and gold. Saving the best till last is Bobbi’s Brightening Finishing Powder. In Porcelain Pearl, Brightening Nudes and Bronze Glow not only do these compacts look great but they’re an instant winter skin antidote giving cheeks a real glow factor. HEALTH & VITALITY with Karen Devine
Here I have highlighted those things you DON’T have to do to be healthier and stripped it down to some bite size pieces for you…
karen.devine@espmag.co.uk
Things you don’t have to do to be
healthier...
GO ORGANIC – can be expensive, why not opt instead for seasonal and local produce, it helps the environment and supports the local growers whilst delivering good nutrients. EXERCISE MORE – it’s not all about running on a treadmill or something you find boring, instead choose something that you love such as dancing, walking or riding your bike, then just start to do a little more of it. GET INTO YOGA PRACTICE – we all look on with envy at those who are flexible and bendy. Instead of deciding you can’t even touch your toes or that you’ll never reach that level of ability, just start with a few stretches. Get into the mood by laying a towel down or dust off the yoga mat and spend 10 mins a day having a good stretch. You can sit on the floor whilst watching TV to take your mind off it. BE A GREAT COOK – some of the best nutrition comes from simplicity such as a creative colourful salad, roasted, steamed or stir fried veg, or even having a green smoothie. DRINK 8 GLASSES OF WATER – we still need to hydrate in the winter but when it’s cold we need to keep warm, sip more herbal teas or some warm water as opposed to lots of tea/coffee/fizzy drinks which dehydrate you. You may not need to guzzle down so much water in a day which depends on lifestyle. AVOID MEAT – you can still enjoy a healthy piece of chicken/meat etc. Start to replace processed meats with simple pieces and enjoy with lots of colourful veg.
W
e are constantly being bombarded by what we should be doing to be healthy. If you’re anything like me, if you get too much information or messages that are so far removed from where you stand right now, you probably just ignore it and feel defensive or deflated when you see a picture of perfect health and wellbeing stuffed under your nose! When something appears too big, the most common response is to turn or run away from it as it appears to be an out of reach destiny, whether that’s getting fitter, flatter, healthier or bringing more peace to your inner and outer world. You’re truly not alone in this – many people are sitting where you are right now, hopeful that the procrastination bug will be deleted from their own hard drive and that they’ll suddenly be the version of themselves they want to be. Usually going from A to B too quickly can end up with too many internal sabotages blocking you from success, therefore taking a few baby steps can lead to greater achievements. You gain more confidence and internal feelings of success which can lead you to where you would ideally want to be in a transitional way rather than a submissive way.

BE POSITIVE – easy for some, not for others. Try writing down one thing you are grateful for then each day add another to the list and read them back each day – it’s amazing how much this lifts you. MEDITATE – some find this very difficult with a chattering mind, instead play some relaxing music, or watch a sunset, light a candle and just watch the flame dance and flicker, sit by a river or do what helps you relax your mind. One step is better than none at all and it is more empowering. Enjoy the journey. In health, Karen www.karendevine.co.uk or find me on facebook.

OTHER PLACES to try...
It’s the month for wining and dining so we asked some of our ESP reporters for a few other suggestions if you’re undecided about where to try… Mikey Clarke “I’d go to Jimmy’s World Grill. I love Chinese and Indian food, whereas my wife is much more of a fan of Italian. Jimmy’s provides all three types of food (and more) – ideal for our different taste buds.”
Amici Spalding Italian food is ever popular in this area and in Spalding Amici is the restaurant to head for, it’s even been given a certificate of excellence from Trip Advisor. During February they’re running an offer, which isn’t available on Valentine’s Day, but is a great reason to dine out twice this month! You can enjoy a bottle of house wine or have 20% taken off your total bill (maximum table of six) when you show or print a voucher which can be found on chef.cat/amici. Book now on 01775 767696.
The Banyan Tree Westgate This city centre based independent restaurant continues to flourish and has recently had a gorgeous makeover. Specialising in authentic North Indian food you won’t find elsewhere this is Indian cuisine that’s fresh and true to its origins prepared using traditional methods. We have to say the new look of the restaurant is great and the food’s just as delicious as it ever was. You can relax with some cocktails first or just pop in for some Indian style tapas at the bar. For February 14 they’re offering a £25 Valentine’s special, so if your partner loves quality Indian cuisine you know where to head. Book now o 01733 342800.
Café Clarkes Embankment The restaurant located in the Key theatre complex on the Embankment offers modern British café cuisine with locally sourced produce putting a twist on dishes you’ll recognise but probably haven’t seen like this. It’s all brought to you by the talented team from Clarkes in the city centre. Café Clarkes switches from bright and airy daytime venue overlooking the river to intimate candle lit evening ambience. For Valentine’s they’re serving up a delicious six course tasting menu with bubbly on arrival, with a set menu for £40. Book now on 01733 561465.
Former Face of ESP Lauren Hughes “Personally I would go to Prezzo as I love the food and enjoy a great meal with a great atmosphere. The profiteroles are my absolute favourite to share with someone else (not that I share desserts much!)”
Pep Cipriano “I enjoy eating out at so many places but for me it's all about service and making my Valentine feel special, so if my local kebab shop can lay on the charm then that's where I'll be!"
Charlotte Jolly
The Bull Westgate The Bull hotel’s AA Rosette award winning Brasserie Restaurant is always well worth a visit, with delicious freshly cooked food at a price that will pleasantly surprise you for city centre dining. For Valentine’s night though they’re offering a special luxury dinner based in the Broadway Suite. It includes a luxury three course dinner for just £32.50 per person prepared by the same fabulous chefs accompanied by romantic live music to set the mood! If you want to make a real night of it enquire about the accommodation package for £77 and book your table now on 01733 561364.
Bollywood Tiger Yaxley It’s worth heading over to Yaxley to try out this Indian restaurant which offers good quality food at very reasonable prices. The restaurant’s recently been refurbished and is looking good! On Wednesdays you can enjoy a banquet of five dishes for £11.95 and on Sundays there’s a buffet for £9.95 (£5.95 for OAPs and children under 14). There is a Valentine’s menu available now so if you fancy a curry to get you hot under the collar and spice up your romantic night, give them a call on 01733 246519.
Vesuvio
“I'd probably choose the Melbourne Brothers’ Brewery in Stamford because it has a relaxed & cosy feel to it and the burgers are great. Very low key and homely plus you can even take your dog!”
Whittlesey There’s a great choice of Italian restaurants in Peterborough but Vesuvio in Whittlesey consistently attracts people away from the city and enjoys a great reputation. You’d better book fast if you’d like to dine out here for Valentine’s but it’s certainly one to try at any time of the year. Good quality, freshly made food and excellent Italian hospitality make it a great choice and if you haven’t been for a little while you’ll notice it’s had a lovely new look. They frequently hold theme nights too which go down a storm so keep an eye out for details on www.vesuviowhittlesey.com. Book now on 01733 204599.
Lorenzo Monteforte “I’d choose Fontanella’s in Whittlesey. Whilst it’s primarly a sandwich bar, I know they open the shop up as a small restaurant over the Christmas period and for Valentine’s Day. Apart from their delicious homemade Italian cuisine, the feel and atmosphere of the restaurant takes me back to Italy. Not just the Italian theme inside, but the Italian accent and top service from the staff inside is exceptional. There is a range of Italian foods to eat, pizza, pasta, salads, breads and desserts.”

COMEDY IS THE KEY FOR FESTIVAL TIME The big comedy news this month is that the Key Theatre’s second annual Comedy Festival is taking place from March 12-18 with some great names on the line up. Jack Allen, who’s looking after the Comedy Festival marketing told me – “We’re really excited to welcome back Bottle Rocket comedy to partner our second annual comedy festival. Comedy is at its most popular right now and to have names such as David Baddiel, David O’Doherty and Chris Ramsey, as well as fantastic rising stars such as Peacock & Gamble and Andrew O’Neill is brilliant for all visitors of the Key Theatre. Making comedy accessible for everyone is even easier when you have so many well-known faces off the TV. Last year was a very successful start for us and this year is set to be even bigger and better!” Here’s a run down of what you can expect in the main Key Theatre and the more intimate Key Studio…
KEY COMEDY CLUB

The producers of The Graham Norton Show and The Sarah Millican Television Programme bring you an evening of the very best in stand up and sketch comedy. There’ll be one more act to be announced. It’s a Valentine special so the ticket price includes a free pink drink from the bar before the show. Tickets are £15 (£13) £12 students & groups on 01780 763203.

Support comes from George Egg, a unique cross between stand up comedy and music hall variety. Also on the bill is rising star Sean McLoughlin with original, personal material and darkly funny anecdotes. Geordie funnyman Ben Van Der Velde, a standup comedian, actor, improviser and presenter is your compere. Tickets are £13 in advance on 01733 265705.

DAVID O’DOHERTY WILL TRY TO FIX EVERYTHING Wednesday March 12 Tickets £15 (£13) – Key Theatre The self-acclaimed Ryan Air James Bond, the Kevin McCloud of the tiny keyboard and the Irish ALF will be coming at ya with his japery like a Jaws era Steven Spielberg. DOD is the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe Festival Winner and also inventor of the last remaining swimming stroke which he’ll share with you.
PATRICK MONAHAN – CAKE CHARMER Wednesday March 12 Tickets £12 (£10) – Key Studio A firm favourite with ESP since he won the New Comedian of the Year award at the Gaslight comedy club in 2001 and fresh from poncing around a pool learning to dive for ITV show Splash! His latest show will see him doing what he does best, making people laugh with his comedy routines rather than his diving ones. Expect his latest show to focus on his love of cupcakes.
MARK THOMAS – 100 ACTS OF MINOR DISSENT Thursday March 13 Tickets £15 (£10) – Key Theatre Subversively hilarious, Thomas last year set himself the task of committing 100 acts of minor dissent in the space of a year. This show catalogues the results, everything from the smallest, silliest gesture to the grandest confrontations.
VICKI STONE Thursday March 13 Tickets £10 (£8) – Key Studio Expect an explosive show full of super stand up songs, silliness and down-right daft observations as Vicki returns to Peterborough after a sell-out run in Edinburgh and a national tour.
DAVID BADDIEL – FAME: NOT THE MUSICAL Friday March 14 Tickets £20 – Key Theatre Baddiel returns in his first full stand-up show in 15 years. Tackling the subject that society seems obsessed with, ‘Fame’ sees him talk honestly about what fame is like, drawing on his own experiences and his strange relationship over his career being the New Lad/Token Jew/Comedy Rock n Roller/Football singer song-writer that people identify him as.
PEACOCK & GAMBLE – HEART-THROBS Friday March 14 Tickets £12 (£10) – Key Studio The most dubiously named comedian in the business Ray Peacock, and partner Ed Gamble, shout and joke their way through an hour of knockabout electrifying stupidity all in the name of stand up. These guys are great. Look up their podcasts on Google and listen for yourselves to give you an idea of what’s in store.
COMEDY CLUB 4 KIDS Saturday March 15 Tickets £8 – Key Theatre The ever-popular kid friendly comedy club returns to the Key by popular demand. This is cracking entertainment for everyone over 6 years-old and under 600 years-old (no vampires or Highlanders). Expect some of the best comedians from the UK and world circuit doing what they do best (minus any rude bits).
PAUL SINHA IS A STAND UP COMEDIAN Saturday March 15 Tickets £12.50 (£10.50) – Key Theatre You might know Paul Sinha as ‘The Sinnerman’ from ITV quiz show The Chase, but he’s primarily a stand up comedian and has been honing his craft on the circuit for years. He’s everything great stand up should be, laugh out loud funny, thought provoking and life affirming.
ANDREW O’NEIL IS EASILY DISTRACTED Saturday March 15 Tickets £10 (£8) – Key Studio Struggling to maintain concentration for long enough to write a new comedy show doesn’t seem like the obvious theme for a stand up show, but that’s what O’Neil has managed to do. A festival favourite and an alternative comedy whimsical wonder, he’s been bubbling under the comedy radar for a while, but this show should help establish him with a wider audience.
CHRIS RAMSEY – THE MOST DANGEROUS MAN ON SATURDAY MORNING TV Tuesday March 18 Tickets £16.50 – Key Theatre After being ‘sent off’ the Soccer AM sofa last year for misbehaving, Chris wonders if he really is the most dangerous man on Saturday morning TV. This sounds like being an entertaining and crowd pleasing show and if you saw him in the city last year, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to see him sustain a full hour long-ish set with a proper theme. Ramsey has a starring role in BBC2’s Hebburn, one of the best new British sitcoms of the last two years, and this is a great show giving comic insight into what happens when you say the wrong thing, at the wrong time.
Care Assistants Required Are you looking for a new career direction?
AUSTENTACIOUS – AN IMPROVISED JANE AUSTEN NOVEL Tuesday March 18 Tickets £12 (£10) – Key Studio One of the great things about comedy festivals is that there’s always something on the bill you wouldn’t normally expect or ordinarily go out of your way to see. However, it’s always worth seeking out the unusual. This improvised play based on the works of Jane Austen is sure to find an audience giving the continued popularity of period dramas. This will be a high-brow finale to the Key’s Comedy Festival – but with something to match all genres of the comedy spectrum, it promises to put a smile on a lot of people’s faces.

Finally, like legions of comedy fans I was saddened to hear that Roger Lloyd-Pack had passed away last month. Back in 2006 I interviewed him at an event to celebrate the Only Fools & Horses 25th anniversary. Sitting alongside him and asking questions in a mock-up of the Trotter’s flat surrounded by props from the show was something I’ll always remember, especially as right next to us was Trigger’s old broom, the one he’d famously maintained for 20 years that had 17 new heads and 14 new handles. As ‘Trigger’ he created one of the funniest and most loved comedy characters of all time, and the tributes that have followed since his death show there was more too him than the simple souled Peckham road sweeper. God bless Roger Lloyd-Pack and Viva Hooky Street!

E T I N U There’s a distinct buzz going around music land here in the Boro and beyond. Around 100 people from the local music scene came together recently in the first meeting of the Musicians from Peterborough to Cambridge group (MPC) which started out as a Facebook group. Local musicians James Grace Caswell from The Tunnel and Nick Smith from Groove Cartel have been pulling together the wealth of talent in the area on Facebook and at the last count nearly 900 had joined the group.
ESP Magazine has always supported local live music ever since we first started out in 1998 and we’re proud to get behind what James and Nick are doing. ESP’s Mike Harris went along to find out more and says – “The group is to encourage or facilitate communication between the musicians, and others in the music industry in our area. Whilst we all know quite a few other musicians, it's always useful to have a meeting where you can meet, swap stories and ideas, compare notes and find out who everyone else is.”
The meeting held at the Brewery Tap was the first get together they’d held to gather views on how to further develop the local music scene.
The night wasn’t all serious muso talk though, it included a quiz with some fantastic prizes donated by local music businesses. Gav Hyde from The Brays came out on top winning a

bass guitar, rehearsal time at Full Circle Studios, CWS Sound and Light hire for a night, a free day in the Cherry Tree Recording Studios in Wisbech, GTR music goodies, a copy of Mark Ringer’s Burning Codes album and a band feature in ESP for The Brays which you can read on our Live Music pages next month. James told ESP – “We’ve had a lot of feedback from everyone who came down and a lot of support from all the sponsors. Many numbers were exchanged and new ideas have hit with bands joining forces, musicians joining bands and a lot of familiar faces just catching up with each other. “I’ve got to say thanks to all the sponsors – Full Circle Studios, Rocket Park Studios, ESP Mag, Mad About Drums, GTR Music, Guitar Shack, CWS Sound and Light, Brewery Tap, Cherry Tree Studios, Burning Codes, The Tunnel, Zeb Roots, Untamed and Groove Cartel.” James and Nick will be organising another similar event soon with a debate on live and
local plus some open mic action too. So if you’re in any way connected to the music scene make sure you look them up on www.facebook.com and search ‘Musicians from Peterborough 2 Cambridge buy, sell and chat’. “We aim to make the live music scene a better place for all bands, artists, venues and of course the public,” said James.“With rock covers being a favourite genre in the area we want to know what you’d like to hear in your local.” Email any suggestions to grace.caswell1987@gmail.com and together we can make music live, loud and local! ESP Magazine is right behind the project and we’ve added even more to our Gig Guide in the magazine and on www.espmag.co.uk to spread the word of where to catch great bands right here in greater Peterborough. Email in your gigs to gigs@espmag.co.uk for inclusion next time.

PUB NEWS
PUB MUSIC SCENE SET TO CHANGE "This could change the face of music in Peterborough," says Chris Blease from Full Circle Music Studios. Off the back of the musician’s meeting last month at the Brewery Tap changes are already beginning to happen which could reshape the local live music scene with established covers bands giving new originals bands a chance to share the stage.

Covers band The Tunnel are kicking things off by joining forces with originals band Skyfight in a gig at The Dragon in Werrington on Saturday February 15. James Grace Caswell from The Tunnel is a man on a mission and the idea comes off the back of the huge meeting of dozens of local musicians he helped pull together recently to reinvigorate the scene. James told ESP the idea has come from various ideas put forward in a questionnaire at the meeting – “We rarely see any original artists on the normal pub scene and it’s generally a pain to go out of you comfort zone to see these sorts of bands at selected venues. So I’ve decided to try and move ‘pub music’ onto a whole new level. Covers bands playing their normal gig and the original band filling the gaps, playing before and in-between the covers sets. “The idea is to pull a bigger crowd and it’s a win win situation all round – punters get two bands for the price of one. Landlords will pull in more custom as two bands will promote the event. Original bands will have a chance to play in front of a crowd and sell their music.” Around twenty covers bands have already shown an interest and Full Circle Studios will be holding an open day for original bands to meet covers bands. The vibe is that this could be the start of something big for Peterborough's live music scene so we’d urge pubs and bands to get on board.
PLOUGHMAN IS PUB OF THE YEAR! Andy ‘Simmo’ Simmonds is no doubt pouring himself and his team real ale in a champagne glass as they celebrate becoming CAMRA’s Pub of the Year for the second time! The Ploughman in Werrington will be presented with the award on Saturday February 15 so join them at the bar as they celebrate this fantastic achievement. Andy told ESP – “I would like to thank all who have supported both our Pub's The Dragon Werrington (Camra Gold Award Winners 2013) and The Ploughman (Camra Pub of the Year 2011 & 2014) in our constant effort to preserve the community local.” There’ll be some hot and cold food available as well as 10 real ales and real cider but whenever you go along you’re always guaranteed a good pint. Each year end the Peterborough & District CAMRA (Campaign For Real Ale) poll all their members for Pub of the Year out of a shortlist of five pubs and once again The Ploughman took the top accolade.

AFRICAN BEATS ARRIVE IN THE CITY Following a sell-out first event of African based music at the Key Theatre last May (AFRICA! featuring Batanai), we can look forward to a mini series of three further African music gigs. Promoter Richard Ferris, a huge African music fan, has secured top quality ethnic music, and the Key has been chosen as an ideal venue.
Bootleg Abba
With more promised later in the year, kicking off the series of gigs, on Saturday February 22, is the Red Hot Rhythms of Son Yambu from Cuba. They’re among the finest bands around playing ‘Son Cubano’ or Cuban son music, which is the essential Afro-Cuban music that originated in the streets of eastern Cuba at the turn of the last century. Son is a fusion of Spanish and African rhythms and is the root of all salsa music.

Formed in 2011, Son Yambu feature a new generation of (mainly) Cuban musicians who are all passionate about maintaining the traditions of the genre. CORN EXCHANGE CELEBRATES 5 YEARS WITH GREAT LINE-UP
MARK HANGS HIS HIGH HAT UP
Photo: Emma Bothamley
When Stamford Corn Exchange opened its doors after receiving a huge amount of renovation by its hard working volunteers, there were many who said it wouldn’t succeed. So it’s very pleasing to see that it’s still very much open and with its beautiful Theatre Lounge restaurant provides a great night’s entertainment. I went there quite a few times last year and am looking forward to some of the gigs already booked for the early part of the year. I spoke to the venue’s General Manager Judith Mackie, who told me – “The Corn Exchange has now been open 5 years and when we started the project, we never dreamed it would take off as well as it has. Our popularity has grown with the audiences and that encourages us to bring a very diverse range of entertainment to Stamford.
General Manager, Judith Mackie
“The other benefit is that we have also become well established on the circuit and that means that tours and agents come to us with their shows wanting a date in Stamford rather than us trying to go to them to chase a booking.”
If you take a look at the February live music dates it proves what Judith is saying. To start with, on February 7, ZZ Tops appear as part of their ‘Live from Texas’ tour of the UK and Europe. They claim the show will bring more tone, taste and tenacity than ever before. Complete with their real beards! The crazy guitars, the moves and nearly 2 hours of hot rodded rock 'n' roll. All eras of ZZ Top are included in the same show with all the classics like Gimmee All Your Lovin, Sharp Dressed Man, Legs, Cheap Sunglasses and many more. The ultimate rockin’ night out! On February 21, back by popular demand, the very impressive Bootleg Abba, who are enjoying fantastic reviews everywhere they appear. They were formed in 1996 with the idea of trying to recreate the live sound and studio recordings of Abba (and that’s almost impossible to do!) And on February 27, there’s a chance to re-live the sounds of the swinging sixties, as Britain's No.1 tribute show brings alive the magic of the era. The show is fast changing as it brings a tribute to not just one band but over twenty five bands. A night of sixties nostalgia! The venue more recently took over the Theatre Lounge restaurant in the basement of the Corn Exchange and this gives the added bonus of offering customers the full theatre going night out. Judith explained – “Now we have the Lounge we are offering the chance of a pre-show meal to make the night special. Or if time doesn’t allow, then you can have just a drink before or after the show in the bar area.” If you want to enquire about the shows or facilities the box office of the Stamford Corn Exchange is 01780 766455.

“Our first theatre gig in Worcester and The Willow Festival have special memories because of the feedback you get from an audience, but I think the biggest moment was playing to a very large paying audience in Truro, Cornwall with T Rextacy. That was special because you suddenly realise that thousands of people have paid to come and see YOU. And they want a show and we gave them one. It was awesome!” I was intrigued to receive a Facebook message saying ‘Drummer wanted for top Peterborough Band’. On investigation the band concerned were Aladdinsane who have achieved UK popularity touring with their show ‘The Sound and Vision of David Bowie’ in addition to regularly entertaining local pub goers. The reason for the appeal is that current drummer and founder member, Mark Hatton is hanging his high hat up after eight years in the band. Mark explained to me what was behind the decision – “We’ve had a wonderful time during which we’ve gone from great local appearances to some phenomenal gigs as the top David Bowie tribute in the UK. However a lot of travelling and the fact that some of the larger sound systems are starting to take a toll on my hearing, I decided to give it a rest for a while, and see what happens in the future.” Having seen Aladdinsane on stage many times, I asked Mark why they had such appeal to their audiences.“Obviously it’s partly to do with Paul’s (Henderson) performance as David Bowie,” he told me, “but I also think that the strength of the band is team work. We get on so well and we’ve been on an incredible journey together, some of which we only dreamt of before.” So what stands out to Mark as highlights in that journey?
What about low points? I wish I hadn’t asked because a few years ago I shared a Lite FM stage with them at Firework Fiesta in the most atrocious weather conditions. It started raining at midday and was still pouring at 6pm. Mark told me – “We’d set up on the huge stage and twenty minutes before we were due on, the volume of rain that had formed on the roof of the stage weighed so much that the canvas split and we were all drenched. A lot of rain went all over my drum kit!” Oh yes I remember it well! Did your kit ever dry out? “Eventually. In fact it probably dried out before me!” Favourite local pub? “It has to be The Cherry Tree.” So what about the future? “Well I’ll continue to be heavily involved in the organisation of the band and their gigs so there will still be that contact with the others, but like I say let’s see what happens in the future. Maybe a few guest appearances.” Let’s hope so, and I’ll leave the last word to his fellow member of the rhythm section of Aladdinsane, bass player Franco Caprio, who said – “Mark and I really gelled and I’m gutted that he’s leaving!” He will certainly be a hard act to follow, but any drummers who are interested should make contact on 07568 174365.

LIVE MUSIC EXTRA ...by Alex Jones
WHITE CLOUDS AND GUNFIRE BACK AT THE MET LOUNGE
CARL PALMER @ THE CRESSET A rock legend is visiting the Cresset on Friday February 14. Drummer Carl Palmer, regarded by many as one of the great drummers in the rock world was a very flamboyant one third of the prog rock supergroup Emerson, Lake and Palmer (ELP) in the 70’s when they achieved huge success both sides of the Atlantic with their spectacular concerts and their concept albums. They also had a huge hit single ‘Fanfare for the Common Man’. Carl is also well known as drummer with The Crazy World of Arthur Brown (Fire) Atomic Rooster (Tomorrow Night) and the incredible Asia. About six years ago, I saw him give a
drumming master class at The Broadway as guest of the Live Music Shop, during which he shared the stage with three top local drummers, Paul Blant, Fozzy and Carlos Parlato in a fabulous evening of spectacular drumming.
Peterborough’s very own pop rock pioneers White Clouds and Gunfire will be returning to the Met Lounge for a homecoming show on Friday February 21. The show will be the penultimate on their upcoming tour with Taking Hayley.
The show at the Cresset on Valentine’s Day is part of a UK tour for ELP Legacy, who in addition to Carl, features Paul Bielatowicz on lead guitar and Simon Fitzpatrick on bass. They’re expected to feature some of ELP’s greatest work including extended sets of Tarkus and Pictures at an Exhibition.
In their last interview with ESP the band told us what to expect from their live shows.
If you want tickets for this spectacular show then the box office of the Cresset is 01733 265705.
Tickets are £6 and are available from the Met Lounge on 01733 566100 or by visiting www.skiddle.com and searching for White Clouds and Gunfire.
Fast, furious and always a good time the band will be on a high after their debut album For All the Non-Believers was well received by fans and critics alike.
“Our shows are 35 minutes of fun. We have such a great time on stage and our enthusiasm is contagious. The one thing people say to us over and over again is ‘wow, I wasn’t expecting that!’” The five piece will also be releasing a brand new three track EP to coincide with the dates and a brand new video for their track Since You Were Gone.
FRANKLY MY DEAR, DAVE DOES GIVE A DAMN! I was tipped off just after Christmas that popular local guitarist, Dave Colton had joined Frankly My Dear. Thinking it was like the January Football transfer window where rumours circulate but come to nothing, I thought I’d check it out with Dave.
WE ARE FICTION ANNOUNCE SPLIT
He confirmed that the news is true but was keen to point out that this does not impact on his gigs with Retrolux, with whom he has been a member for a number of years. He explained – “Retrolux had a great couple of gigs over Christmas and we were all keen to continue together albeit maybe one to two gigs a month. At the same time, the vacancy came up with Frankly who also schedule just a couple a month so I thought it was an ideal fit.”
One of Peterborough’s premier rock outfits We Are Fiction have called time on their career after six years of performing as a band. The quintet took to social media to announce their split which came despite receiving positive reviews for their debut album One for Sorrow, performing at the Reading & Leeds festivals and being backed by BBC Introducing earlier in the year.
His busy diary reads: February 7 – Retrolux at The Ostrich, North Street
The band said – “As of today we will no longer be writing and performing music as We Are Fiction. As we grow as people, we also grow as musicians and we have come to a point in our lives where we feel we need to follow our hearts both as people, and as musicians; in turn, leading us to this decision to bring We Are Fiction to an end.”
March 1 – Frankly My Dear at The Ostrich, North Street So, plenty of variety for Dave – and no chance of him signing to play left back for Arsenal!

February 15 – Davison Woods Band at The Cock Inn, Werrington
The band recently played a blistering album launch show at The Solstice and will be sorely missed on the local scene and beyond. All of us at ESP wish the members well and hope to see the guys performing under different guises very soon. Good luck lads!
