This month’s films come to a close on Thursday February 26 with Jimmy's Hall by Ken Loach. It’s 1932 and Jimmy Gralton is back home in the Irish countryside after ten years of forced exile in the USA. He comes up against some of the locals when he reopens the village hall, thus enabling the villagers to gather to sing, dance, paint, study or box, but some take a dim view of the whole thing and some want rid of Jimmy and his ‘dangerous’ hall. Find out more on www.peterboroughartscinema.co.uk

A DAY OF MUSIC AND COMMUNITY There’s a great free music event coming up on February 8 at the Ostrich pub in Peterborough with performances from an array of local artists. The line-up includes Moony (Opaque), Kerry Devine, Simon Piper, Vincent and Nathan Wieckowski, Keely Mills, Richard Hall, Lukas and Charlie Alexander. The event’s been organised to raise cash for Volunteer Services Overseas’ (VSO) various projects around the world and so donations are welcome on the day. There will be a big fat and fun quiz where prizes can be won (small fee for quiz) as well as food and a range of drinks from the bar.

VINTAGE BALL COMING SOON

9. First off on Thursday February 5 it’s Next Goal Wins. As an antidote to Premier League cynicism, it couldn't be bettered.

Get ready to get your glad rags on as Spencer’s Vintage Ball is coming on April 25. Once again this popular social event is raising money for Phoenix School which is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Organiser Liza Schwartz from Spencer’s salon on Lincoln Road is already on the look out for auction and raffle prizes and table sponsors.

That’s followed by a story of forbideen love and its consequences on Thursday February 12 in Grand Central. Thursday February 19 it’s French film Two Days, One Night which sees Marion Cotillard give a rousing performance as Sandra, a depressed mother who faces the axe from her minimum-wage job.

It’s being held at the East of England Showground from 6.30pm with a drinks reception. Over the past years they have raised over £50,000 and all proceeds go direct to the Phoenix school for severe and profoundly disabled pupils. Call 01733 324568 for details and tickets.

Thinking that was the end of that, I couldn’t believe my luck when she actually came home the next day with a blindfold – something I know wouldn’t have happened had she not been reading the book. But, it wasn’t just the raunchy scenes she liked (apparently). My wife explained that there was something about the book that reminded her of when we met (8

years ago now!) and how great that feeling is when you’re first besotted with someone. If the book can make her appreciate me a little more, whilst spicing things up with some saucy new underwear, then the film is certainly worth a watch, right? So, will you be seeing it yourself? On a serious note, I think it has the potential to be a good movie. I’m not saying it’ll be a 2015 Oscars contender, but I think it will genuinely be watchable. The Hollywood scriptwriters should’ve

made sure that the film has more plot than the book, and the actor line up is strong. There are two other books in the series, so it’s guaranteed they’ll be planning a sequel already. So, guys – take my advice and accept the ribbing from your mates, and take a chance with this film on Valentine’s Day. *Disclaimer: Watching Fifty Shades of Grey may not spice things up in the bedroom.

50 Shades of Play Fifty Shades of Grey has become a worldwide phenomenon. It became the fastest-selling paperback book ever, beating J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. In total, ten well-known movie studios fought for the rights to the film adaptation, including Fox 2000, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros and Paramount – with it eventually going to Universal for a whopping $5 million.

ESP’s Sarah Tempest says she’s not ‘submitting’ to Mr Grey… Erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey, along with its two sequels, has sold over 100 million copies worldwide, prompted old ladies to queue sheepishly in Waterstones to get a copy and had the Loose Women reaching for an extra HRT patch but I for one HATED it.

“I lay back exhausted, gazing happily out of the shed window. Despite my concerns about my inexperience, my rhubarb was coming up a treat.”

In a nutshell, it’s the story of plain Jane Anastasia Steel who charms super rich, devilishly handsome, emotionally damaged Christian Grey by being clumsy and awkward and is targeted by him to become his next ‘submissive’ sex slave. She then falls hard (innuendo) for the man himself, nothing, we’re supposed to believe, to do with the helicopter or penthouse or free sports car and considers signing a contract to give him control over what she eats, wears, the friends she keeps, the places she goes and to beat her on a regular basis for his sexual gratification. Like any normal strong, intelligent woman wouldn’t tell him where exactly he could stick his nipple clamps!

“My body writhed and quivered from the pain. I had learned my first lesson. Never again would I leave an upturned plug on the shed floor.”

As Paloma Faith so succinctly put it as she put the book into Room 101 – “It’s as if Feminism never happened”.

You’ll have to purchase the book for all the others!

Now I’m no burn my bra (ooh, the very thought), eat my placenta, ‘who needs a man when there’s Ann Summers’ kind of girl but all that cutesy lip biting and ‘finding her release’ just because he told her to, made me want to puke. And whilst we’re on that subject, ‘finding his release’, an

Another way to tell how big something has got is by the amount of people spoofing it. There have been numerous Fifty Shades of Grey parodies, and I’ve chosen my top 5. In fifth place is a book titled Fifty Sheds of Grey. An erotic story based around garden sheds doesn’t sound like an instant bestseller, but for a few weeks it was actually outselling the book it was spoofing. I (sadly) have a copy in the bathroom for easy reading. Here are just a couple of extracts from the book:

My top 4 Fifty Shades of Grey spoofs can be seen by visiting www.espmag.co.uk Mikey Clarke

expression E.L. James uses over and over again, is even more cringe worthy than the word ‘climax’, and I’m sure even that was outlawed in the 70s. So schmaltzy all it needs is a picture of Mills and Boon’s long haired lothario Fabio on the cover. And it’s so unrealistic! After a sesh, Ana was far too busy glowing Goddess-like to even once do the messy post coital dash of shame to the bathroom (come on girls, we all do it!), nor did she even once bring a throw or a cushion or a lamp into the Red Room of Pain; I’d have had a colour chart in there quicker than you could say ‘duck egg blue’. And I’m sorry but no woman gets turned on by the way a man’s trousers ‘hang off his hips’, we’re far too busy checking out his butt. If you want to know what it’s really like being a submissive, read ‘Diary of a Submissive’ – no romance there, it’ll make your hair curl! I appreciate I’m in the minority not liking this book and there’s many that say that it’s got them talking and experimenting and has therefore improved their sex life (my friend’s baby was born 9 months after she read it, ’nuff said!) but I can’t help feeling that all the hype around it just proves that Britain’s women just aren’t getting much. And that makes me sad. In fact the only good thing I can say about the book is that I actually did identify totally with Christian Grey; because I spent most of the book wanting to slap Anastasia too.

For those that don’t know (where have you been?), Fifty Shades of Grey is an erotic novel by British author E. L. James. It focuses on the deepening relationship between a college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and a young, rich businessman named Christian Grey who has very ‘singular’ tastes in the bedroom! It’s best known for its erotic scenes – which people seem to be excited to see on the big screen this Valentine’s Day. The fact that hundreds of pre-sale tickets have already been sold at Peterborough’s Showcase cinema (and I’m writing this is January) reflect that. But then as the girls in the office point out ‘gorgeous’ Jamie Dornan (recently scene in TV’s The Fall) is starring in it…

SLAP EVERYDAY IS JUST PANTS A survey I recently read claims one in 20 women said their partner has never seen them without make-up. Is this for real? That’s like saying one in 20 women have never seen their partner change their pants every day… Err…

Pep Cipriano

FAN MAIL DILEMMA After writing almost 200 columns for this excellent magazine during the last 16 years, it’s nice to get the occasional email. Especially, when, like this one, I’m totally stumped as to how I should advise. Suggestions anyone?

MY WORD OF THE MONTH

LOVE

Well, it’s Valentine’s, so it’d be rude not to. Here’s what I love: Philly cheese steak, Junior’s plain cheesecake (cheese theme going on here), baked cheese and onion slice, Ike’s Spiffy Tiffy sandwich, spaghetti con aglio e olio, Walnut Whips, white Toblerone, Caramac, log-oven cooked pizza, Walkers prawn cocktail, prosciutto, mortadella, provolone and anything in a wrap. on offer features everything from authentic tapas to the tastiest burger and cheese I’ve sampled outside of America.

Hi Pep

Saw you in ESP mag - love the

banter!

missus has said I Got any advice for me? The for January and need to turn over a new leaf ady take the bins help with the housework. I alre enough?! out every week. Like that’s not What’s a bloke to do?

CELLO’S LOVE FOR TOP PRIZE

City boxer Cello Renda is hoping to create his own massacre this Valentine’s Day when he takes another shot at Sky Sports’ televised ‘Prizefighter’ in Blackpool on February 14.

Cello was a beaten finalist in the threefight competition when he last entered seven years ago but he’s a different fighter now. It’s three furious rounds, which is Cello’s bread and butter but the boxing experience he’s since gained should make it compelling viewing. That’s my Valentine’s night sorted.

ARGO, BILL’S AND BURGERS! It’s Oscar season and if Argo Lounge on Bridge Street was nominated for best coffee and food newcomer it’d win hands down.

Cheers, Zed.

This month there’s even more reason for food aficionados to get excited when Bill’s, the breakfast to bedtime food chain, opens its new restaurant in the city centre.

I know the city council had dozens of offers (some from large established chains) to fill the void in St Peter’s Arcade but they hung on until the right fit presented itself. Top marks to the decision maker in the Town Hall – I guess the best things really do come to those who wait. Loungers invested £550k transforming the unit into a two-storey retro home from home, where dramatic art work sits next to oversized vintage sofas and statement light fittings in an eclectic style much loved by yours truly. It caters for all tastes throughout the day, whether you’re looking for coffee (a good one too), a business lunch, a lazy all-day brunch or a family friendly eatery (kids menu also). The food

Taking residence where the old Lakeland store on Church Street was, Bill’s too caters for all occasions, be it brekkie or a proper evening meal for two this Valentine’s Day. Inside there are plenty of cosy booths and larger sharing tables for gatherings and celebrations. The décor is again right up my street with bits and pieces bought from auctions and antique fairs to give the restaurant a really welcoming feel. I can’t wait to try it out. Neither can I wait until April when I plan to wrap my mouth around a decent burger at the Handmade Burger Co. who’ll be opening up in The Old Still location in the Westgate Arcade. Here you’ll get a freshly made burger cooked to meet all your requirements. They make more than 40 varieties of burger and I plan to try each one every week for a year. Word is the owners are considering keeping some of the character of The Old Still intact including retaining the name on the front to run alongside their own branding. This is a nice touch to pay homage to one of the city’s oldest pub locations.

SUGAR RAY ON TOP TABLE I’m so excited typing this that I think I’ve just wet myself. On Wednesday March 18 I’ll get to meet one of the greatest boxers of all time when Sugar Ray Leonard is the special guest at a boxing dinner event at The Solstice. He’s a legend who needs no introduction and there are only a dozen or so spaces left to see this boxing icon talk about his glittering career. Call Kevin Sanders on: 07872 601467. See you there.

EVENING PILATES? I’m determined to give Pilates a go but can’t seem to find a class that fits in with my hectic celebrity lifestyle diary. Recommendations by email pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk will be graciously accepted. Thanks.

>> Izaak – what do you mean “Pepper Chip”?! >> Chris – got the Fujifilm in the end! I’ll let you have a play >> Juliano – see you next year… >> Luigi – if you’re reading this in NYC then send me a photo! >> Chris P – Mario needs more persuading. Call me >> Adam – do you recommend Granny Smiths for apple pie?

CITY NIGHTCLUBS – WILL THEY BE BACK? The city centre night scene has taken a bit of a bruising at the start of 2015 following the closure of nightclubs Liquid and Bar Fever but is anyone really that surprised? The debate among night-time economy traders and revellers as to why these venues have had to close isn’t a straightforward one and this is because there isn’t a single reason for their downfall. Instead, there are several contributing factors. But underpinning every finger pointing excuse that’s fuelled the demise of the quintessential nightclub lies one simple fact: not enough people in Peterborough go into town on a Friday and Saturday night and they never have done. And when it comes to weekday evening presence in the city centre then you’ll find yourself in the company of passing tumbleweed. This isn’t to say Peterborough city centre in the evenings is a hostile, uninviting or dangerous place to be. It’s quite the opposite but culturally we’ve never been a city that consistently comes alive after dark. And why should we be? We simply haven’t the population or intense investment that goes with it of nearby cities like Nottingham, Leicester, Lincoln, Milton Keynes or Northampton but maybe in 20 years time it might be fair to compare us. Investment in our city centre has never been so good, particularly if you’re a coffee shop or restaurant.

Most of these businesses are ticking over and that means the people of Peterborough have embraced them. It’s also a sign that the priority and social make-up of our citizens has changed. Back in the 1970s Peterborough, as it is today, was one of the fastest growing cities in the UK. People settled here in their thousands and it was a city that businesses looked to invest in, which eventually signalled the start of a steady night-time economy that was relative to the needs of its population. The birth rate in that decade was high and this meant investment in the city was required to ensure those children had access to everything they needed as they went into adulthood. Peterborough was designed to keep its children and prevent them from leaving their birth city for further opportunities. The last 15 years has seen the city experience another large population spurt but of a different kind with different cultures and different priorities. Our new communities will need time to properly settle and it’s perhaps their children who will be the night-clubber of tomorrow. As for the rest of us and our current 20-something generation, maybe their priorities and lifestyles are simply not the same as those of the same age 20 years ago. I remember going to a night club was an occasion but young people today

have far more choice and distractions to view going to a club as being something special to do. I know it’s Hollywood but you only have to look at John Travolta’s character in Saturday Night Fever to understand how important and focal the humble nightclub was to young people back in the day. I could go on and dissect all the other reasons why two of our nightclubs have closed but it’s a debate that’s best presented by the views of local people on social media. Here are just some of the comments I’ve seen: “Last year the Broadway theatre was open every night and we benefited early on from the influx of people there.” “I don’t think the city is really catering for the late night market.” “Police could do more to help ensure people feel safer at night.” “Maybe the city just had too many nightclubs.” “More city council investment is needed in Broadway, Westgate and Midgate.” “Nightclubs are really a thing of the 1990s.” “We shouldn’t panic. Everyone thought it was the end when Rinaldo’s, La Scala and Tropicana closed but the city bounced back.” “Cheap supermarket booze and pubs staying open until the early hours (with no admission fee) is a big factor.”

“People organising parties on social media has kept them away.” “The smoking ban and high prices of alcohol are to blame.” “Clubs in the 1980s and 90s had a strict dress code and it was an event to go out and enjoy the whole experience.” “DJs could mix properly back in the day and they had personality.” “The clubs aren’t diverse enough today and music policies are all wrong.” “A proper university will attract people back to clubs. Simple.” “Clubs closing isn’t just a Peterborough problem. The world’s a different place today.” “Rent and rates in the city centre are so high and the risk is beyond scale.” “People's priorities change as life gets more expensive. They now sit at home on Facebook and watch reality TV.” "The council always wanted more cafes and eateries in town since the late 90's.They've got their wish but at what cost to the night-time economy?" The list goes on. I do think the city has changed for the better and its citizens have changed too. What this means for the future of our nightclubs only time will tell. For now I’m thankful for my memories in what was arguably the best time for clubbers in Peterborough.

NURUN’S SPICING IT UP IN 2015! Before we find out what you’ve been up to since leaving the show, was Mark a worthy winner in your opinion?

Photo: Emma Bothamley

“Both Bianca and Mark were worthy finalists,” Nurun told me. “However, I think Bianca’s business plan was creative, lucrative and unique. It was offering a solution to an identified need in the hosiery market. The whole point of being The Apprentice is to bring something new to an industry. Mark’s SEO business idea was a safer option and certainly not creative but he has great business credentials and traits, which makes him a credible business person.”

It’s been a couple of months since the most recent series of The Apprentice came to an end and in this time our very own city representative on the show – Nurun Ahmed – who I know well has been very busy indeed.

So tell me what you’ve been up to since the show ended? Lots of celebrity parties I presume?! “A few! It’s been really busy. I’ve attended red carpet events, one was hosted by Nickelodeon and others have been award ceremonies. I’ve done quite a few TV and magazine interviews including Virgin Pioneers

and others by reputable Asian media channels. I’ve been nominated for awards such as Muslim Female Entrepreneur of the Year 2015 and I’ve been added to the British Bangladeshi power list 100. I’m currently looking into several business projects and TV opportunities, so watch this space…”

putting together my online clothing and scarf collection, which launches this month. I’m really happy with the progress I’ve made and most certainly my stint on The Apprentice has helped get things off the ground.”

Jo Malone was obviously very impressed with you. Will we be seeing you working together in the near future?

“I’ll be concentrating on developing my businesses and securing a market presence. I’ll also get involved with some projects that have been offered to me and I’m always on the lookout for developing new business ventures.”

“Jo’s been in touch and put me forward to look into a project, which she has been involved with in the past – WOW 2015 (Women of the World Festival). Who knows what the future holds. I may end up working with Jo or go on to even bigger things!” Has your own business plan got off the ground? “Yes. I’ve launched my wedding planning business – Nurun Asian Spice Weddings. I’ve also been busy

What do you think the next 12 months has in store for you?

What advice do you have for anyone applying to the show? “It’s a really ruthless process and the good advice you have given me Pep, still holds traction, which is be yourself and believe in yourself. One has to be extremely gutsy and the process is not for those where integrity is pivotal to their character.”

Time To Welcome Bill’s After the pre-Christmas excitement of the Argo Lounge opening in the city centre this month sees another long awaited treat finally fling open its doors.

VALENTINE’S BREW

Bill’s Restaurant opens at 8am on Monday February 9 in the former Lakeland premises on Church Street – and we can’t wait! The award winning Bill’s Restaurant is another great addition to what’s becoming the dining out quarter in the city, centring around Cathedral Square. Open from early in the morning for breakfast, throughout the day and into the evening for dinner, it sounds like Bill’s caters brilliantly for every occasion. They have a big focus on food that’s fresh and a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. So whether it’s an early morning coffee and bowl of porridge, through to a candlelit dinner and a decent glass of wine to mark the end of the day it sounds like this will be another venue well worth a visit. We like the sound of the vibe that Bill’s brings and whether you want to sit quietly in a corner with your laptop or celebrate a birthday in style, they tell us they aim to make sure you have a good time.

“We are very much looking forward to opening our restaurant in Peterborough,” said Bill Collison, founder of Bill’s. “With plenty of cosy booths and larger sharing tables for gatherings and celebrations, we are hoping we’ll be a hit with the locals in this pretty city. “I think what makes us a bit different is the effort we put into everything, from the menus and staff training, to me picking bits and pieces up from auctions and antique fairs to give the restaurant a really welcoming feel. Bill’s has a real bustle during the day and then, come the evening, we get the candelabras glowing and it’s a really different vibe.” Bill’s in Peterborough will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day Monday to Saturday 8am to 11pm, Sunday (and Bank Holidays) 9am to 10.30pm. Tel: 01733 347258.

HANDMADE BURGER COMPANY ON ITS WAY More good news has been buzzing round town and we’re pleased to confirm that The Handmade Burger Company is soon to take up residency in the former Old Still pub in the Westgate Arcade. Due to open at the end of March / early April they’re currently recruiting around 30 staff so if you’re on the look out for work register your interest sharpish on jobs@handmadeburger.co.uk. We think the variety of eateries is great and this should be another enhancement to the city’s dining out scene. Chris Sargeant, one of the owners, told ESP – “I can’t wait to open our 23rd restaurant at the Old Still in Peterborough, it’s an amazing pub and we are so proud to have secured such an historic location. Our plans for the Old Still include maintaining the charm, look and feel of this very much loved pub. We are looking at bringing the Old Still back to life by creating something special for the people of Peterborough to be proud of.” If you’re unfamiliar with the brand, they first opened in Birmingham back in 2006 and have gone from strength to strength. It’s a family-owned and run restaurant brand with a commitment to using fresh British food. They’re famous of course for their burgers offering over 40 varieties handmade in the restaurants each day, but also offer a selection of delicious chicken and vegetarian options and boast an exclusive Jimmy Doherty’s Farm, rare-breed beef range. Chris added – “I can’t wait to find out what the fabulous people of Peterborough think of our new restaurant. Our teams pride themselves on delivering quality food, great service and hospitality. I hope that diners will love the fresh food we make and the great variety we offer.”

Made In Peterborough Event Celebrates Local Writing Talent We know we have loads of local talent here in Peterborough and when it comes to authors we certainly have our fair share!

Members of the public will have the opportunity to meet a number of local authors and find out about writing and getting published. LOCAL AUTHOR IS ‘MINDFUL’ WITH NEW BOOK RELEASE Another local author who’s just launched his new book at Waterstone’s in Peterborough is alex:g who’s new novel Mindful (published by Matador) is now available. Alex was the presenter and producer of alternative current affairs show ‘On The Edge’ on Sky Television, and this new book tackles many of the topics covered in that series, all wrapped up in an extraordinary fictional narrative. He told ESP – “If I was given a few seconds to pitch ‘Mindful’ to a Hollywood producer in a lift, I’d say it’s ‘House of Cards’ meets ‘Fantastic Voyage’ with a hint of ‘Ghost’. We are at a crucial time in British politics, and trust in all the political parties is at an all-time low.

‘Mindful’ considers the circumstances necessary for a new party to come to power. And then, what would those with a lot to lose do; those pulling the strings that no longer delight in the lobbying power they have in the current system? What would they make happen to try and reset things back to how they want them – in other words, how they were? And that’s all before the story heads off into the realms of science fiction in order to keep our chief protagonist alive!” Author alex:g was Festival Director for the Cult TV Weekenders for 14 years (1994-2007) you can find out more on www.culttv.biz. With ‘Mindful’, he now gets to pen the sort of extraordinary fiction celebrated by that Festival. He is currently working on enhancing the

format of his weekly current affairs show Doomwatch®, which made its debut for 55 editions on Peterborough FM, and will soon be one of the flagship shows on local TV station Hereward Television – www.hereward.tv

JAMIE BLAMES MORRISSEY IN HIS NEW NOVEL! A while back we told you about another local author Jamie Jones and his book, London Road Legends, one of two he’s written about his beloved footy club. He’s now back with his third book, his first novel, with the interesting title of ‘I Blame Morrissey’. It has a very distinct Peterborough flavour and tells the story of Jay, an emotionally incompetent Peterborian teenager who wrestles his way

through the 1990’s by putting his faith in singer Morrissey. Whilst falling in and out of love he blunders into a number of unintentionally hilarious situations, but even as he becomes a man he can’t help but look to Morrissey for guidance. The book features tales of nights out in legendary Peterborough clubs and pubs including Rinaldos, 5th Avenue and Winners. It also looks back at

key events of the decade as they played out in the city, from the collective hysteria following the death of Princess Diana to Posh winning at Wembley in 1992. Jamie hasn’t stopped there – his next novel ‘Far From Me’ will be released in 2016. ‘I Blame Morrissey’ is now available from www.britainsnextbestseller.co.uk

paparazzi Caught in the act? LIVE MUSIC SCENE IS GOING STRONG… ESP’s Paparazzi photographer Mike Harris has been on a pub crawl... err photo stint… and captured you in the act of enjoying some great bands on the local live scene. The ever popular Hooker didn’t disappoint at the newly refurbished Wheatsheaf and the Tom Wright band was going down a storm at The Cherry Tree. Tom’s fairly new on the scene but is rapidly gaining a following and even managed to get local legend Rex Gates to join him on bass. We recommend him. Finally in Market Deeping at The Coach House Ian Graham was playing downstairs with his side band Tiger Club (normally he plays with the excellent Retrolux) meanwhile an up for it crowd were enjoying the DJ tunes upstairs. Meghan Trainor

In less than a year this 21 year-old’s gone from being a successful, but relatively unknown songwriter, to getting a record deal signed and being a Grammy nominated global star with her mega hit All About That Bass.

I

t’s been a whirlwind year for this American star as Meghan’s also been writing for other artists, Sledgehammer (that Meghan wrote for Fifth Harmony) is getting massive and her own tune was one of the biggest selling songs ever with All About That Bass selling over 6 million copies.

“All my friends are songwriters and producers and I’ve lived all their dreams,” she says. “They all tell me that, they’re like, ‘you accomplished what we try to do every day’! ’Cause as songwriters like, yes our goal is for other popular singers to sing our songs, but the real goal inside is like, we want to be singing these.” It’s been an epic year for Meghan with all her success but she says the highlights have just been surpassed. “I just had a new one! My birthday was everything. I had an arena of 20,000 people sing Happy Birthday to me ’cause of Nick Jonas. Who I’m like, the biggest fan of. But I also just did Jimmy Fallon, I performed on it. And after Jimmy came to talk to me and my parents about how he just loved my album and wants to play it and, I remember I was acting so cool, but once he turned around I was like… [whispers] OH MY GOD and my Mum’s like, ‘that was the coolest thing, of life ever, right there’.” Celebs have certainly caught on to the Trainor vibe with none other than Beyoncé claiming to be a fan and Mr Swing, Michael Bublé producing a cover of All About That Bass on Instagram!

28

www.espmag.co.uk

“I’m obsessed with him,” admits Meghan. “One of my goals in life, like off my bucket list, is make sure Michael Bublé knows I exist and like the fact that he sang my song, I died. I saw it on Instagram and I was just, I remember I was laying in bed and I just got up and was like ‘MUM did you see it?’ she was like ‘I SAW IT, I SAW IT!’. I’ve been to like five concerts maybe, and his was one and I cried. I was like ‘oh he’s so good on track, he’s probably terrible live’. And he was better live. He’s so funny.” Often artists break their own country first and then look to take on the world but All About That Bass went global as well as being massive in the States and was #1 here for 4 weeks. Meghan says she never expected it to be such a biggie. “As a songwriter, I went to my favourite songwriters and they said ‘how do you know you had a hit?’ and I said ‘it’s the ones you never guess, it’s ones you never know’. We did All About That Bass and we shelved it and I was like ‘cool song, whatever. No one’s gonna hear this. No pop star can sing this ’cause they’re all fricking size zeros and no one can rap and sing’. So the fact that this was probably my biggest song of life, it was one of those, I had no clue. And what you hear today is what the demo is. No auto tune or nothing, I walked out of the studio and that’s what I heard and that’s what plays every day.” This catchy fun tune seems to have clicked with most people, but perhaps

also because it’s become a bit of an anthem for body confidence. Her follow up track Lips Are Movin’ has also raced up the charts. Meghan’s debut album, Title, is just out, co-written and produced by Kevin Kadish (who she’s hugely star struck with) and includes a duet with none other than John Legend. “Yeah and I produced that! I was very proud of myself and I was like ‘I need one song on here that I’ve produced because I’ve been a producer since 13, give me somethin’!” Despite being a songwriter since she was a child there are still plenty of tunes out there Meghan wishes she’d written herself – “‘Halo’ by Beyoncé. What. A. Song. I was thinking about this morning like damn, those lyrics. ‘Remember those walls I built, baby they’re tumbling down’. Also ‘Mistletoe’ by Justin Bieber. Thought that was one of the best Christmas songs I’ve ever heard! “His people keep coming to me like ‘we need songs for him’. I said put him with an acoustic guitar stop doing this gangsta stuff. Show his vocals. I said he’s got the fan base of Elvis, he’ll never go away, but make them respect him again. Give him those songs. He sounds great with a guitar!” It’s easy to forget she’s so young – she’s already had the chance to fly all over the world and has clocked up some amazing experiences – but a bit of the little girl in her still shines through when she confesses to the

things she can’t do without on her travels. “I have a stuffed animal named Paddles that I recently got it’s a penguin. He’s kinda famous on Instagram. I bring him everywhere. He’s great. Also, my Mum’s jewellery, ’cause they can never come with me, but I love looking at these to remind me of them. She designed them and everything.” Meghan’s pretty excited about the year ahead already and it looks like we’re set to see a whole lot more of this young star. “The tour in April, the Grammy’s! It’s gonna be my year to really let people start to know Meghan Trainor and who she is and what she’s about. And I’m so excited. 2014 was pretty epic… I think 2015, I think there’ll be more special performances that I haven’t done yet like Saturday Night Live or stuff.” Meghan’s UK tour starts in Manchester on April 9 and the fourdate stint will also visit Glasgow and Birmingham before finishing off at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire on April 13. Tickets are available now via Live Nation www.livenation.co.uk/artist/meghantrainor-tickets Tickets are priced at £15 and £17.50 for the London show.

Classical R ESP’s Mikey Clarke interviews two tremendously talented twins…

Photos: Andy Vernum @ Studio One

ESP and many others across Peterborough were gripped to the programme to see if Hannah and Naomi would make it through and went wild when none other than Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson turned his chair. With that Classical Reflection joined Team Ricky!

I

always feel very proud of our city when watching local talent on the television. Louis Smith, David Proud, Warwick Davis, Luke Pasqualino and Aston Merrygold are just a few of the names that show Peterborough definitely has talent. The most recent home-grown talent to make it onto our screens, are identical twins Hannah and Naomi Moxon from Longthorpe. Together the 19 year-old girls perform as Classical Reflection and appeared on the hit BBC talent series The Voice last month. For those that haven’t seen the show, The Voice is a singing competition that begins with blind auditions. The four judges – Ricky Wilson, Will.i.am, Sir Tom Jones plus new judge (and ESP’s January issue cover star) Rita Ora – listen to the contestants in chairs with their backs to them, and then press their button to swivel round if they want them on their team.

30

www.espmag.co.uk

Soon after that moment I was lucky enough to chat to the girls. It turns out that I was beaten to it by a few others though. “We got so many lovely messages from people – the reaction has been so overwhelming,” they told me. “We were tweeted by Ricky which was lovely, and by Emma Willis who presents the show with Marvin Humes.” So far Peterborough’s been well represented on this talent show with two other local singer/songwriters making appearances. Firstly Murray Hockridge made it through as far as the Battle Rounds and then last year John Quinn auditioned, but despite judge Tom Jones telling him he ‘sang the hell out of it’ after his great performance of Jake Bugg’s Lightning Bolt, sadly he didn’t get through. We all know how talented this guy is and he did the city, and himself proud, but sometimes that’s the way it goes on these shows.

Reflection Perhaps you recognised the girls from Classical Reflection when you saw them on the tele? They told me – “We have always lived in Peterborough. Our parents have always lived in Peterborough too. We went to Ormiston Bushfield Academy; we really loved it there, that's where we became more confident with performing.”

So, who inspires the twins? “We admire so many artists,” they said. “A couple of people that spring to mind are Jackie Evancho – who really inspires us with our music as she started singing very young. We love getting inspiration for song choices from her. Also Josh Groban is a really big inspiration musically for us as we love the classical crossover genre. We think he has such diversity in his voice that we really admire.” It turns out that it’s not just Classical music that the girls are into. “We love listening to any style of music as all are so different… whatever emotion you are feeling, there is usually a song that fits perfectly.”

Photos: BBC/Wall to Wall

The twins continued – “We got our passion for music at quite a young age, our mum used to take us to music groups for toddlers, when we were about two, we really loved the singing. We then went to a children's church choir when we were about seven! We took our singing grades up to grade eight, then we started singing at events professionally when we were about sixteen. We have always loved all types of music it's a great way to relax.”

Round two of The Voice is the Battle Round, where judges put two of their own team members together to compete against each other. During our chat I spoke to the girls about how they felt about that, what Ricky was like to work with, and what the future holds for them. Read what they had to say and watch my video chat with the girls by visiting www.espmag.co.uk. The Voice airs on BBC One every Saturday. Keep watching to support the twins during the Battle Round which airs later this month. To find out more about Classical Reflection visit www.classicalreflection.co.uk

SELMA

BLACKHAT

THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL

FOCUS

One of the most controversial films in recent memory gets a cinematic release over here – after alleged North Koreaninspired cyber-attacks on Sony Pictures. That’s after the Seth Rogen/James Franco comedy, which sees two journalists recruited by the CIA to assassinate dictator Kim Jong-un, sparked outrage in the communist state.

This extremely wellreceived drama – which surprisingly only snagged two Oscar nominations – chronicles the tumultuous three-month period when Dr Martin Luther King Jr (David Oyelowo) led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic 1965 march in Alabama. Co-stars Tim Roth and Oprah Winfrey.

There’s no doubting the pedigree of director Michael Mann – with Last of the Mohicans, Heat and Collateral on his resume – but hopefully this crimedrama won’t be pulled from cinemas after an underwhelming box office take Stateside. Chris ‘Thor’ Hemsworth stars as a convict hacker who must help hunt a high-level cybercrime network.

The sequel to the wellregarded original sees Richard Gere join the returning Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and co. With Sonny (Dev Patel) expanding his hotelier dream to another property – it’s making more claims on his time than is available with the demands of his imminent wedding.

After the lacklustre response to both MIB 3 and After Earth, usually bankable Hollywood star Will Smith is looking for something of a career boost. Hopefully this comedy crime-drama will be it, with Smith starring as a con artist who gets romantically involved with his inexperienced apprentice (The Wolf of Wall Street’s Margot Robbie).

galaxy, when an engineered exmilitary hunter (Channing Tatum) tracks her down – and tells her she’s next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

There’s no denying the talent at hand, as this sci-fi adventure from the team behind the Matrix trilogy tells the story of Mila Kunis’ (Ted) Jupiter Jones – an ordinary Chicago girl with a cleaning job who always predicted great things for herself.

British stars come in the form of Oscar-nominated The Theory of Everything actor Eddie Redmayne – who’s the main antagonist of the piece as a member of Alien royalty – and Sean Bean, who stars as a ‘Han Solo-esque’ character.

But she didn’t expect that to take her to the outer reaches of the

Fingers-crossed the extra-time to fine tune the film has paid off…

SAINT’S ROW IV: RE-ELECTED (XONE/PS4)

The ‘Saints’ go to infinity and beyond in their most chaotically funny adventure yet – remastered for next-gen consoles with a great new stand alone expansion.

####

As your Saint character gets elevated to Presidency, your haven is disrupted by an alien invasion which leaves you trapped in the massive Matrix-inspired open-world of Steelport – complete with an outrageously zany array of weapons and super-powers at your disposal. What makes Re-elected stand-out though – beyond boasting all the DLC from the original game – is the exhilarating new six-hour Gat Out of Hell expansion, as you wage war against the Prince of Darkness. The new add-on might not be quite enough for some who’ve played this before, but the pure enjoyment and hilarity levels are so ramped to the max – it’s almost impossible to put your controller down once you start playing again. Go intergalactic for the best version of Saint’s Row yet.

LARA CROFT AND THE TEMPLE OF OSIRIS (PS4/XONE/PC)

This proves to be a worthy sequel to 2010’s highly-acclaimed Lara Croft spin-off game Guardian of Light – despite lacking the awe factor of the first outing.

###

This downloadable top-down isometric third-person shooter/adventure/puzzler – complete with local and online co-op mode for up to four players – is engagingly more of the same, and for fans is an enjoyable extension of this Indiana Jones-style world. Some sensational puzzling in this Egyptian underworld glosses over the flimsy storyline and loss of magic that inspired the original, but it’s definitely a nice filler (at a decent price point) before the highlyanticipated Tomb Raider: Rising.

EXCLUSIVE FILM REVIEW:

BIG HERO 6

(PG)

Disney’s own animation studios are on a roll – and now show they can compete with the previously far-superior Pixar Studios that they acquired.

After the success with Wreck-it Ralph, and of course, Frozen, they’ve continued their purple patch with a Japanese-influenced superhero flick, that is an endearing action-adventure set in the colourfully-crafted technological hybrid city of San Fransokyo (no explanation needed) – that has lots of heart and oodles of ingenuity. This is actually based on a recent Marvel property – even though Disney’s sister studios haven’t had an official input – as robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada (voiced by Ryan Potter), forms a tech-savvy superhero squad to tackle an evil nemesis who is using one of Hiro’s inventions for his own dastardly gains, and turns his lovable ‘Michelin Man’ looking robot Baymax (Scott Adsit) into a kick-ass ninja for good measure. In fact, this companion – who was initially made by Hiro’s older brother as a ‘health care’ aid to detect injuries in humans – is one of the best sidekicks seen in a Disney animation in ages. The film does suffer from comparisons to The Incredibles,

#### and the battle scenes do become a bit clichéd and messy during the finale, but for the most part this is fantastic stuff. Throw in a fairly innovative story, some clever humour, some really heart-warming moments – and a computer-generated Stan Lee – and you’ve got all the ingredients for Big Hero 6 to hopefully snag the Best Animation gong at the Oscars. It didn’t win at the Globes – but IS better than How to Train Your Dragon 2 which won the award. It also has a fantastic animated short called Feast attached to it before the actual movie starts – portraying a man’s romantic journey through the lens of the food he feeds his dog – which at only six minutes is nearly worth the ticket price alone. But couple it with Big Hero 6 and it equals a great family outing – as Disney Animation Studios continue to grow in strength.

For seven years he’s used it e sites and it hasn’t missed a beat. equipment to Free Fire Zone Airsoft gam Admittedly the trusty Land Rover isn’t Frank's idea of a dream car but it’s incredibly functional and being a 4x4 makes it ideal for use at his woodland Airsoft game sites.

Photos: Emma Bothamley

A top speed of 55mph is all that’s required but Frank would prefer it sometimes if his pride and joy was a little quieter. He told me: “It does sound a bit like a tractor when it starts up and I get a few second glances from people but at the end of the day it’s a functional vehicle that does what it says on the tin. It’s been really reliable and because the engine is a fairly straightfor ward one, we can maintain it ourselves. “The Land Rover makes Airsoft game days so much easier, as I’m able to transport all the game equipment in one vehicle to the game site and not have to worry about it getting mucky, getting stuck in the mud or shot at!”

But if being used as target practice doesn’t faze Frank or the big V8 Landy, what does? “Nothing”, says Frank. “These cars are built to last and although it’s not full of modern gizmos and the heater isn’t quite what it used to be I wouldn’t swap it for the world. Yes, the ride is a little bumpy and long journeys are a no-no but it really does me proud and comes into its own when from time to time we’ve used it to pull customer’s cars out of the mud at our woodland game site near Bourne. “It’s part of the family now and it’s hard to imagine being without it. Besides, my little boy would only let me change it for another camouflaged one!” What’s your Pride & Joy? NEW CITY BIKE FEST IN MAY

Airsoft is a military simulation game similar to paintball. It costs a lot less to play, it hurts less and uses realistic looking replica weapons.

A brand new motorcycle event is coming to the city this summer and hopefully it’ll fill the big void left by the BMF show that is sadly no more.

The MCN Festival of Motorcycling – celebrating 60 years of Motor Cycle News – will take place at Peterborough Arena on May 16 and 17. Organisers promise it’ll be a motorcycle lover’s paradise with trade stands, retail opportunities and special guests – as well as the very best in modern, classics, customs, off-road and race machinery. Rob Aherne, managing director of Bauer Motorcycling, told me: “Alongside test drive opportunities from all the major bike manufacturers, we will be bringing some jaw-dropping content including iconic race bikes, a glorious classic display, a huge retail zone and much more.”

Two unique sites and different styles of gaming. Fight in and around buildings or in the woods and undergrowth. The games run with two teams, each are given objectives which they have to try and achieve. Competitive Prices Private, corporate and open days catered for.

The Limited Edition Extra Illuminating Moisture Balm, £42, will energise dull skin to bring back its natural glow. (Just don’t mention the dull skin part!). She’ll be so happy, she’ll glow inside and out. Or if you’re still feeling the pinch after Xmas, what about Bobbi’s Brightening Lip Gloss, £18. It helps to create fuller looking kissable lips as well as delivering a high shine finish.

All women love to receive perfume as a gift and as a daily necessity it’s useful too; a sure way to win her heart definitely. If you’re not sure what she likes, choose something you’d like to smell on her every day, the sentiment won’t go unnoticed but I’ll point you in the right direction anyway. Vera Wang Glam Princess is a fruity, floral scent with notes of vanilla and marshmallow alongside pear and orange blossom. Not only does it smell fab but it comes in a cute, shimmering gold heart shaped bottle. Perfect for the Princess in your life.

BEING

It’s the month of love – time to love yourself a little more... F

ebruary is said to be our month of celebrating love. Valentine’s Day is a dedicated (some would say commercial) time to say to that someone special how much they mean to you. Most of us find saying ‘I love you’ to another a whole lot easier than saying it to ourselves and we can often associate that with being ‘self-absorbed’ or even narcissistic. Self-love is not about a ‘I love me, who do you love?’ kind of ego attitude, it’s a love that is woven into the fabric of who we are but we have forgotten. We can often forget for moments, hours, days, weeks or even years and allow the lack of self-love to play out in our lives. This can manifest outwardly in many ways including: •

Overeating (in particular processed foods and sugary foods)

Excess alcohol

Addictive shopping or shopping compulsively

Spending endless time on social media, computer games, TV or other electronics to block out feelings or cause a distraction

Compulsive exercising

Endless gossiping

We can often continue these energy draining behaviours when we are low, feel sad, stressed, lost, unhappy or empty inside so these are our attempts to make ourselves feel good, even if it’s a temporary stimulation. We may also carry self-hatred, self-loathing, lack of self-worth, disgust or lack of respect for ourselves, allow people to dominate us, avoid listening to our intuition, get more and more

indecisive so we need outside validation. Or we may project all those feelings onto other people as we attempt to take some of their power to make ourselves feel better! Practising self-love can mean different things to different people as we are all unique and will have various ways to show love to ourselves. It is not a one trip destination, but more of a gentle exploration of self-discovery. No one is happy and joyful of every moment of every day as we are human and we are energy in motion (emotion) that means we can go up and down the emotional scale. So how do we start when all we have ever done is emotionally beat ourselves up or behave in ways that are not love generating? Sometimes making a few incremental steps can be all that is needed to help us ignite a sense of love and wellbeing inside: 1. Look for your passion, what have you stopped doing or what have you forgotten about that you used to love doing. Can it be revived? 2. Be around those who make you feel good about yourself and life itself, when you’re around people that are upbeat they raise you too, they make you feel good about being you. 3. Remove/limit toxic people in your life where you can. 4. Stop defining beauty by what you see in magazines, TV, films etc – this is a lie that you measure yourself against – let it go it is all an illusion! You are already beautiful, you need to believe it and tap into it. Love who you are right now.

5. Love what makes you different from everyone else. 6. When you are feeling low, find a quiet place and bring into your mind a place you love to be (even if you haven’t been there), it could be the beach, mountains, or sitting in trees, lakes etc. Sit with the peace and the calm and the positive feelings that will wash into you when you visualise your feel good place. 7. When you’re having a good day and feel good about yourself, grab a pen/paper and write down all those things you know you are good at, or things you like about you. 8. Write down all the small, medium and large accomplishments you have had in your life so far and keep adding to them. 9. Don’t start the diet, start edging out some of the foods that are not generating the good feelings inside. Make incremental changes rather than the changes that are harder to sustain. 10. Be conscious of what your are watching, films and TV programmes can create fear, anxiety and worry into our body. Exchange these for those feel good films. 11. Love your body and give thanks back by a home pamper evening or treat yourself to a massage or other treatment that allows you to bliss out in your own body. Serenity Loves who sponsor my page offer some fantastic massage packages. So why not check out their facebook page Serentiy for more details. The feeling of love is the vibration of our universe. Our heart energy (the feeling of love) expands out of us and to those around us. Imagine a world where love is the dominant energy being experienced, how much healing could take place. When you want to feel it more, (this is what I do) sit in a comfortable place, close your eyes and focus your breathing around your heart, imagine breathing in and out through the heart. Now bring to your attention someone or an experience you loved and hold that image whilst focusing the breath into the heart. Keep this feeling going until you can expand the frequency of love all around you. This can take only a few minutes but it really is an amazing way to find a feeling of universal love inside of you. Loving yourself is a gift you were born to have. Love, health and happiness, Karen www.karendevine.co.uk

THE KEY TO YOUR COMEDY LOVER’S HEART Hello again, and thanks for joining me as I bring you another Mostly Funny page. It's February, love is in the air, spring's on its way and the big comedy news locally is that the Key Theatre Comedy Festival returns next month from March 11 – March 16. If the last two in 2013 and 2014 are anything to go by, it's going to be a great week of live comedy bringing together some familiar names and rising stars of the stand-up circuit. Take your pick from one or more of the following… entertainer 'Count Arthur' takes centre stage as the showbiz legend, master raconteur and mangler of words arrives in Peterborough via Doncaster with a brand new show.

LUCY BEAUMONT – Weds 11 March 8.30pm Nominated for the top prize at last year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Lucy's brand of cosy comedy contains home-spun tales and her attempts to find a husband (She's now engaged to 8 of 10 cats captain Jon Richardson). JOHN SHUTTLEWORTH – A WEE KEN TO REMEMBER – Wed 11 March 8pm The versatile singer/organist wanted to share fond memories of his favourite past weekends, but a typo on the poster means he's now spending the evening paying homage to his next door neighbour and sole agent, the diminutive Ken Worthington. COUNT ARTHUR STRONG – SOMEBODY UP THERE LICKS ME – Thu 12 March 8pm Fresh from his recent 2nd series on BBC1, Steve Delaney's aging variety

MITCH BENN – DON'T BELIEVE A WORD – Fri 13 March 8.30pm There are few better music based comedians on the circuit, and his new show sees him on fine form packing in loads of funny and interesting material and rallying against things that rile him like religion, astrology and Gwyneth Paltrow to name a few. CARL DONNELLY – NOW THAT'S WHAT I CARL DONNELLY VOL VI – Thu 12 March If I had to pick one show to see, then this is the one I'd recommend. I saw one of Carl's first ever gigs when he performed at Edinburgh in 2005 in front of about 10 people. He did a routine called 'Beans on Toast', which I'm sure he's long forgotten, but I'll always remember for its sheer silliness. Since then he's developed from an open spot into a headline act with beautiful observations and an ability to connect with every audience he plays to with real warmth.

REDUCED SHAKESPEARE COMPANY IN THE HISTORY OF COMEDY (ABRIDGED) – Fri 13 March A brief history of comedy through the ages from this festival favourite troupe. Want to see all types of comedy deconstructed with gentle warmth, humour and wit? Then this is the show for you. LITTLE HOWARD'S BIG SHOW FOR KIDS – Sat 14 March 4pm

yourself a ticket and board the last train to jokesville. ANDREW LAWRENCE – REASONS TO KILL YOURSELF – Sat 14 March 8.30pm Come and laugh at one of the most bitter, self-delusional and vitriolic comedians plying their trade in the UK. He has a stupid face, a disappointing life and a view that the world is awful. Bask in his toxicity.

From the hit CBBC show, join Big Howard to help him celebrate Little Howard's 6th birthday (for the 10th year in a row). The world's only interactive animation is a unique family show with lots of jokes and songs for all the family to enjoy. ALEXIS DUBUS & MARCEL LUCONT – Mon 16 March 7.30pm

RICH HALL – 3.10 TO HUMOUR – Sat 14 March 8pm The king of deadpan grouchery is back doing what he does best in a brand new show. Like a transatlantic laughter express ploughing through the comedy landscape and puffing out gags of rapid fire banter. Get

Join Alexis and his alter-ego, the French cock-blocking baguette loving Marcel in a very funny, quick witted and exceedingly sharp show. One is an Englishman abroad trying to find himself through travel and the other is a French ponce in a turtleneck. Conversational, classy and a concept worth seeing. For all prices and to book: 01733 207239.

THE LAST LAUGH I was saddened to hear that American comedian and actor Taylor Negron passed away during January after a long battle with cancer. I met him in 2007 a few times at the Edinburgh Festival when he was starring in a play and I remember him hanging out a few times with comedians I was friends with and swapping stories. He was a very entertaining and engaging guy and although not a household name, amassed one off appearances in hit US shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Seinfeid, Hill Street Blues, ER and Curb Your Enthusiasm. He's probably best known in the UK for either his biggest film role The Last Boy Scout (playing the movie’s main villain opposite Bruce Willis) or

42

www.espmag.co.uk

for an often repeated episode of Friends as Allesandro, the enraged owner of an Italian restaurant who confronts Monica over a scathing review she's written, only to then employ her as head chef after she cooks him the best marinara sauce he's ever tasted! But perhaps the best tribute to him is this final reflective piece that he wrote himself about his career shortly before he died: www.xojane.com/entertainment/taylor-negronfinal-piece So long Taylor, and thanks for being that guy who humoured me that time I told you how great you'd have been as a villain in a Pierce Brosnan era Bond movie.

RALPH LOVES LISA I'm sure many of you will remember the episode of the Simpsons where Lisa gives Ralph the Valentine’s Day card with a train on the front that says 'I choo-choose you'. First shown in Feb 1993, it's become one of the most memorable episodes in the show’s history, and all these years later Ralph's crush on Lisa is still as strong as ever. During the recent 25th series there was a scene that played out as follows: Lisa: “Hi, Ralph. Um, I just wanted to tell you, there was a tooth in the Valentine card you gave me.” Ralph: “Plant it and you'll grow a new Ralph!"

THE POSH PAGE ESP’s new columnist Neil Gilby brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

Follow Your Dreams! Erhun Oztumer, affectionately known by his fans as the Turkish Messi is showing everyone at the moment why it’s good for clubs in the Football League to take gambles on players from Non-League. It’s a tough job unearthing gems, but it just so happens that Posh are pretty good at doing it. in the Super Lig that season and qualified for Champions League football.

Photo: Joe Dent

“Sivasspor was the other side of the country, deep in the mountains where it snowed like six months of the year, I was there for a year in the reserves with the dream of breaking into the first team, but in Turkey you are only allowed so many foreign players and at that time we had more than the allowed allocation, so it became more and more obvious that I wasn’t going to progress there.”

I wanted to take Erhun deeper into his comfort zone to dig into his career, and in particular look at his Turkish background and heritage, so where better than whisking him of his feet and taking him to ‘The Mad Turk’ restaurant in Stamford. Before we do anything I ensure that Erhun chooses our food for the evening, my knowledge on Turkish food is basic at best so all my trust was put on his shoulders to ensure the evening went well… I wasn’t disappointed!

football, I was part of the Charlton Athletic Academy so I took it very seriously from the off, in my mind this was never going to be a recreation for me, it was going to be career, my dream, my life. The problem was my size; after getting released from Charlton I had trials at like ten different clubs, out of those ten let’s say three of them I underperformed on the day, but the others I did well at, but I was always being told you’re too short and that would be that.”

Born in England to Turkish Cypriot parents, life growing up for Erhun was pretty complicated. “I used to go to a Turkish school on top of an English one, so six days a week for me was all about study. Monday to Friday I would be like every other child in the country, but my Saturdays would be spent at a Turkish school. My parents are both Turkish and my dad speaks better English than my mum, in fact my mum doesn’t really speak much English so the benefits of going to Turkish school was massive for me and I’m glad I did it.

To follow his dream Erhun had to give up on English teams and look further afield. The decision was made to join Manisasporin Turkey, a step that wasn’t taken lightly.

“My down time was all about

44

www.espmag.co.uk

“I was only 16 at the time, and I went out there alone. My language still wasn’t really up to scratch, which made it really difficult for me, but I had to do it in order to play. Everything was new and if I am honest pretty uncomfortable, living with strangers, the food, surroundings and I was pretty shy as a kid which didn’t help.” Erhun managed to get a move to Sivasspor, a team who finished 2nd

To find this progression Erhun pushed through a move to Üsküda, a feeder team two leagues below, a move that was intended to be a loan but actually turned out to be a permanent move. “It was a tough decision because I was dropping down the leagues, I wanted it to be a loan deal but the club felt differently. At this stage I had no agent etc so it was all on my shoulders but I looked at the positives, I could progress in the game and also the fact that I will be moving to Istanbul, one of the nicest cities in the world, helped my frame of mind.” Erhun soon took to getting regular football at Üsküda, and he rewarded the club for their trust. “I joined part way through the season which wasn’t ideal but I think I made nine appearances that season scoring seven goals, I remember my Dad coming to watch me on my debut where I scored a brace, and I was beginning to settle until the following season where a new manager came in wanting to play more direct football which saw me once again sit on the sidelines.” Erhun was now faced with a dilemma, to see out the remaining year of his contract in a team where he was no longer going to feature, or return to England against the

Turkish side’s wishes to find a ‘real’ job and give up on the game. “It came to a point where I just got on the phone, booked my own flights and returned home all without telling my parents. The thought of playing non league and working my way back up was now appealing to me and thankfully my parents backed me all the way. “Üsküda wanted around £40,000 to release me from the contract and it took for my Dad to actually go out there to meet with the chairman in order for me to be let go. I found out after that my Dad actually paid the club around £6,000 out of his own pocket, and from there I was able to join Dulwich and ultimately progress in order to get the move to Peterborough United.” As we sit here talking about his family and the support he received from them throughout his career it’s clear that it’s an emotional subject and something not taken lightly by the player. “Everything has thankfully turned out for the best. When I signed my contract at Posh my parents were both in tears and so proud of me, and it’s now my job to repay them, which I try to do every single day in my work ethic towards the game. “I never had a Plan B in regards to something to fall back on had football not have worked, and looking back that was the best frame of mind I could’ve had, because had there been a Plan B I may well of took that, it would’ve been the easy way. But I persisted and followed my dream.” *A massive thank you to everyone at The Mad Turk in Stamford who looked after us really well, and Erhun states that the meal he had was the best Turkish meal he had ever had, so get yourselves down there!

QUEEN ARE SUPREME

NEW SOLO ARTIST GETS COSY

The previous year was the year for female solo artists, but 2014 was undoubtedly the year of the male solo singer/songwriter. We saw the emergence of Ed Sheeran, George Ezra and Sam Smith all displaying huge creativeness in their material. So will 2015 bring more talent to the fore?

If you saw the live broadcast on New Year’s Eve by Queen with Adam Lambert on BBC1, I’m sure that, like me, you were totally impressed by the way that the young American gave a very impressive performance. It also brought back some memories of the way that the great Freddie performed so many different yet classic songs. The Key Theatre on the Embankment allows you to continue the nostalgia on Friday February 27 with a performance by Supreme Queen. This is a band that’s been paying homage to Queen since 1995 and in that time have made a huge impact on audiences around the UK, Europe and Asia. Last year they performed We Are The Champions on prime time Saturday night TV introduced by Graham Norton. You Tube contains a video of their appearance in front of 14 million viewers, and you can understand their popularity as frontman, Scott Maley,

Maybe one local name that could feature is Michael Keithson.

Check out the YouTube videos and you’ll see what I mean and head for the Key on February 27.

The Cosy Club in Stamford was the venue for the launch of a new EP by this local singer/songwriter. After over a decade of playing keyboards in various bands and touring throughout Europe and the USA Michael took a break from music and barely played for a couple of years. Now he says he eventually rediscovered music for himself but this time as a songwriter and not a sideman. 2015 sees Michael venture out with his debut recording of his own songs to see where this new journey takes him.

The Key Theatre box office is on 01733 207239.

Michael told ESP – “Whilst the music scene in Peterborough is

plays an uncannily realistic Freddie with the stage movement and the incredibly powerful voice. Scott is flanked by a really tight and talented band including Nathan Mathers on guitar playing a very convincing Brian May. Their attention to detail even stretches to using the exact same equipment that was used by Queen on stage in their heyday.

very much alive and vibrant I do feel that there is an underrepresentation of original acoustic/pop/rock/indie acts (and venues) where the local scene is saturated with cover bands. Therefore, I would love to see if someone might be interested in shining a light on some original acoustic music from the area.”

I unfortunately missed the launch of the EP but some of the tracks are available to listen to. So I had a listen. There are six tracks and Michael takes the listener through a mix of contrasting styles. Some upbeat and others very poignant. I loved the delivery and he can certainly write lyrics. My favourites are Life Lessons, You and Retrospect. All very different, but all with great phrasing. If you want to listen go to https://michaelkeithson.bandcamp. com/album/michael-keithson Or to find out more about him visit www.michaelkeithson.co.uk

0898 AND THE MOTIVATORS REFORM FOR PETE A huge live music event is taking place on March 7 & 8 at The Cresset in memory of one of the biggest characters on Peterborough’s live music scene. ‘Pete Thomson’s Memorial Hootenanny’ will see local bands and musicians, past and present, getting together for this exciting event. Pete Thomson was a regular supporter/member of many local bands across the city and is probably best known for his unique and superb renditions of ‘Delilah’, ‘Nut Bush City Limits’ and ‘Whole Lotta Rosie’. Sadly he passed away in November 2014 at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall, after being diagnosed with Metastatic Lung Cancer only seven weeks earlier. Colin Smith (Citizen Smith) was a very close friend of Pete’s and is organising the event with all proceeds going to the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice Appeal. Colin told me – “Pete was a very popular and loved man and the response from our fantastic local

bands and musicians has resulted in us having to make this a two day event to fit all of the bands in!”

‘BOWIE’S’ BACK @ STAMFORD

Local Bowie tribute band Aladdinsane are the country’s leading tribute to David Bowie. They had a very busy 2014 touring the UK and this year looks to be the same. So, a local appearance is an opportunity to be grabbed. They appear at Stamford Corn Exchange on Saturday February 28. Taking you back to the height of the glam rock period from Ziggy Stardust, working through Bowie’s later career, there are not many of his classic songs missing.

Combining Paul Henderson’s stunning vocals with aspects of Bowie’s stage characteristics and theatrics, Aladdinsane recreate the studio and live recorded versions from Bowie’s vast musical repertoire. You’ll see why Paul and the band are being hailed as the Ultimate Bowie Show with their incredible attention to detail, impressive musicianship and Paul’s undeniably incredible voice. Tickets are available from the Corn Exchange Theatre box office on 01780 766455. www.espmag.co.uk
