And everything changes. Intrigued? We are! It Snows will be running from Wednesday February 24 - Saturday February 27 at the Stamford Arts Centre and tickets are £8 on 01733 763203.

GET READY FOR THE PETERBOROUGH DRAGON BOAT RACE THIS JUNE Photo: Chris Porsz

This might be slightly optimistic, but it won’t be that long until summer is here! A great time of year for events in Peterborough. One of our favourites is the Dragon Boat Festival which is being launched at Serpentine Green Shopping Centre on February 6. The event actually takes place on Saturday June 11 and is an ancient Chinese tradition and the fastest growing water activity in Britain today! Up to 10 people each paddle a 30' boat with a drummer at the front beating time and a helm (provided) at the tail steering a straight course. No previous experience required, just plenty of team spirit! It’s a great event and is fundraising for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall hospice. To register and for more info on how to get involved visit www.dragonboatfestivals.co.uk/peterborough.

THE BIG JURASSIC FISH HUNT AT PETERBOROUGH MUSUEM This February, Peterborough Museum throws open its doors to The Big Jurassic Fish Hunt, a fun filled family event themed around exciting new research that’s currently taking place at the museum. In 2002, in a quarry in Whittlesey, Dr Jeff Liston uncovered some interesting remains of the world’s largest ever species of fish, leedsichthys problematicus, which date back to the Jurassic era and had been largely unresearched – until now! These fossils are now being prepared, documented and researched at Peterborough Museum and children and families are invited to pop along and learn more about these fascinating fishy finds in a fun and educational way with Dr Jurassic Jeff! The event runs from Monday February 15 - Friday February 19 at Peterborough Museum during the half term holidays. Opening times are 10am – 5pm (last entry at 4pm). There’s no need to book for this event, families can just drop in! For more info visit www.vivacity-peterborough.com/bigjurassicfish.

Events DAVE ANDREWS FUNDRAISING NIGHT AT THE SOLSTICE A great charity night featuring top local band Children of The Revolution is to be held in memory of a Peterborough man. In February 2015, Dave Andrews sadly passed away after fighting cancer for two years. Now his family want to give something back to the Peterborough Oncology Ward who cared for Dave during his long battle. In honour of Dave and to raise funds for the ward, they’re putting on a fundraising event at Radius, above the Solstice on Saturday April 23.

Photos: Chris Brudenell

The night will start at 7.30pm and you can look forward to music by the popular band Children of the Revolution, a disco, live DJs, a fun photo booth, an auction, a magician, raffle and a quiz in honour of David’s favourite activities. A photographer will be taking snaps during the evening so we suggest you dress to impress in ball gowns, tuxedos and suits!

GET SET, GO! TIME TO ENTER THE PERKINS GREAT EASTERN RUN

Raffle donations are welcomed and tickets are just £5 on 07715 238141 (Matt Andrews), Julie Andrews (Sainsbury’s colleagues), 07525 028002 (Kim Jeffrey) or on 07714 034231 (Colin Jeffrey).

Registered interest in the Perkins Great Eastern Run reached over 1,500 well before the race opened – dramatically up on the same time last year! The Peterborough race opens for entries early February, but that didn’t stop a record number of people preregistering for the event, which falls on Sunday October 9. It looks like those get fit resolutions really kicked in but it might also be that the growing success of the race is encouraging runners to sign up early so they don’t miss out. The 2015 event was the city’s most successful half marathon since the race made its return to Peterborough's streets 10 years ago. It was a record breaking event with almost 7,000 runners participating across the half marathon, Anna’s Hope 5K Fun Run and wheelchair race. Annette Joyce, service director for city services and communications at Peterborough City Council, which organises the race, said: "We had such a great response to last year's race and, with hundreds of people already pre-registering for the 2016 event, signs already look very encouraging for October. "In this Olympic year, and with 10 months to go until this year's race, why not set yourself the challenge to be part of one of the biggest and best half marathons in the region." The Perkins Great Eastern Run has a great reputation among half marathons in the UK, as its fast, flat course gives runners an excellent chance of a personal best. Close to the event, novice runners can get all the running support and training advice they need for the race. Free weekly training sessions take place at the Peterborough Embankment Athletics Track from July and on race day pacers will lead runners around the course at a variety of speeds. To enter this year’s race please go to www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk

ROYAL AIR FORCE IN CONCERT @ BROADWAY THEATRE Three Peterborough choirs are about to take to the Broadway stage again alongside another well known name – the Band of the RAF Regiment. Peterborough Male Voice Choir, Peterborough Voices and Peterborough Youth Choir have previously performed with musical superstars Black Dyke Band, The Kings Singers and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the city theatre. The choirs – directed by William Prideaux – are delighted to welcome the Band of the RAF Regiment for a concert in aid of the RAF Benevolent Fund, the RAF’s leading welfare charity, on Sunday March 6. Music has always been an integral part of military life and since its formation in 1942 the Band of the RAF Regiment has played its part in everything from Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace to live BBC Radio broadcasts. 2014 saw musicians from the Band of the RAF Regiment perform a live broadcast alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra on BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night Is Music Night and the Band has also recently featured on BBC 1’s Songs of Praise. They’ve recorded numerous albums whilst continuing to support British Forces overseas, notably to Basra in 2004, Moscow for the VE celebrations in 2010 and most recently, in 2012, India to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. As serving members of the RAF, musicians are required to support key operational roles overseas and in recent years members of the Band have served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and the Falkland Islands, fulfilling a diverse range of operational roles from detainee handling to driving ambulances. IT’S THE LOUIS AND LUTHER SHOW FOR SPORT RELIEF! fight against Ebola in Sierra Leone. I hope that you will enjoy the different side of Luther and support this important cause by signing up for the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games this year.”

“You’ve probably already seen Louis promoting this year’s Sport Relief...” Local hero and Olympic gymnast Louis Smith is of course getting stuck in for the Sport Relief fundraising campaign next month. Idris will be donning his infamous Luther coat to uncover a serious case of hilarity in the sketch and as well as our Louis, he’ll be joined by Lenny Henry, Rio Ferdinand, David Haye, Denise Lewis, Cecilia Noble, Ruth Wilson and Ian Wright. This special one off sketch will be shown as part of a star studded night of Sport Relief TV on the BBC, hosted by John Bishop, Gary Lineker, David Walliams and Claudia Winkleman amongst others.

Louis is as happy on TV as he is on a pommel horse and will be making a special appearance on the show on Friday March 18 in a Luther spoof alongside Idris Elba.

Idris said: “This year, for Sport Relief, Luther will be appearing in a totally different light. I am so proud to be lending my support to this cause again. Over the past year I have seen how important the work that Comic Relief and Sport Relief do on the ground as they helped in the

You’ve probably already spotted Louis promoting this year’s Sport Relief showcasing his gymnastic skills balancing on a bike rather than a pommel horse! He’s right behind the campaign and keen to see as many local people get involved walking, running, swimming or cycling so time to limber up folks. We’ll have more details next month but locally there’s the Peterborough Mile around Ferry Meadows on March 20, a swimathon from March 18 – 20 at Stanground Sports Centre and another chance to walk or run at Barnwell Country Park on March 20 as part of the local Sport Relief challenges. So why not sign up for an event and grab your official Sport Relief t-shirt, available online at www.sportrelief.com and from Sainsbury’s from February 15.

CAMPAIGN TO HELP WALTER TAKE FLIGHT ONCE AGAIN

We love a bit of eccentricity, even better when it’s in Peterborough! He was a real personality in and around the city and worked as a Lifeguard at the Peterborough Lido and also at Peterborough City Council so it seems fitting that after years of trying to find a way of honouring him, it’s finally happening.

Photos: Peterborough Telegraph

Vivacity, in partnership with the City Council and with support from local campaigners, has agreed to unveil a memorial to Walter Cornelius at the Peterborough Lido when it opens for its 80th anniversary season on Saturday May 28. The idea for a weather vane, depicting Walter flying across the River Nene (Walter’s most well-known feat) was proposed by close friends Chris Allen and Cllr. John Fox who’ve long campaigned for a memorial in Walter’s name. The campaign’s now well underway with the aim of raising £5,000 to fund the weather-vane memorial. You may have read in last month’s Man About Town column about Peterborough legend Walter Cornelius – famous for trying to fly across the River Nene – and how a campaign’s been launched to fund a weather vane at the Lido in his memory. Oh yes, long before all the TV stunt shows, back in the 60s and 70s local strong-man Walter was strapping wings on his back and leaping off Town Bridge! Already £1,125 has been donated towards the appeal and we’re all being urged to do our bit to help fund this tribute to a great local character who passed away in 1983. Walter Cornelius has gone down in local folklore. He emigrated to the city from Latvia in the 40s, made his name through a host of incredible stunts and kept city residents entertained by breaking over 50 World Records – all whilst raising thousands of pounds for charity in the process.

WELCOME TO EATABOROUGH!

FIVE SENTENCES TO SAVE YOUR VALENTINE’S DAY

We’re two months into 2016 and not a day has passed without someone getting excited about a new restaurant, pub or bar opening in the city centre. French bistro chain Côte Brasserie is in pole position to convert the former Santander Bank premises in Church Street to a restaurant. They’ll be only a few doors away from Bill’s, which opened a year ago and hasn’t looked back. Côte Brasserie is proposing to seat more than 140 diners on two floors and have a small outside dining area set against bi-folding doors. Businesses are investing in Peterborough for a multitude of reasons but mainly because the city is expanding and the immediate city centre is finally starting to benefit from years of improvements. With any luck we’ll see work begin on the expansion of Queensgate before the year is out, which within a couple of years will house a multi-screen cinema, seven new restaurants and extensions and improvements to the likes of John Lewis and M&S. The look and feel of Lower Bridge Street / Rivergate is next in line for improvement works starting later this year and Domino’s Pizza is already confirmed as new tenants of the former Gourmet Plaza building. Lower Bridge Street is the gateway to the city centre and I’m looking forward to seeing it being given the make-over it deserves.

Rumour has it that the former Ladbrokes building along the same side is being turned into a cocktail bar, so watch this space for developments on that one. And continuing with the focus on Cowgate, diners with a sweet tooth are licking their lips in anticipation of Tamu opening their second dessert restaurant in the city this summer. At the other end of town a new Lithuanian cuisine restaurant, the Shepherds Inn, has now opened in place of the former Royal Spice location on Park Road.

1. “I love you even more now than when we first met.” This will bring her instant reassurance and security, both of which are important to a woman’s happiness. Tell her this about an hour before Match of the Day is on and you’ll get a pass to watch it. 2. “You’re my best friend, the best lover and the best girlfriend I could ever wish for.” With this she’ll realise you’re not taking her for granted. Now you’ll be forgiven for clipping your toenails on the kitchen table. 3. “I would still choose you.” There’s no better way to show commitment to your relationship with these words and commitment to women is everything. The toilet seat stays up forever once you’ve delivered this line. 4. “Let's plan a special date.” This demonstrates to her that she’s your top priority. Coincidently (you didn’t know until arrival) the sleepy village location of your special date with a quaint and charming B&B, romantic strolls and candlelit diner is staging a car and bike festival that same weekend. It’d be rude not to.

January kicked off with word that Wagamama were coming to town but the noodle soup is still lukewarm, as at the time of writing my sources tell me no formal approach has been made. What we do know is that a vacant former pharmacy on Westgate is likely to be turned into a micro-pub called The Bimble Inn. It’ll be an honest real-ale pub with the emphasis on conversation just like a proper pub used to be like. We’re promised British wines, real cider, craft keg and a variety of premium bottles and cans.

It’s Valentine’s Day and here we go again with all the lurve and blah, blah, blah. They say actions speak louder than words but if you want to impress your lady on February 14 while benefitting at the same time, then these five sentences are all you need to say...

But if it’s food from another continent that takes your fancy then recently opened Sabor Brasil (formerly Monroe’s) has been serving up delicious Brazilian and Rodizio dishes that I promise you need to be devoured. So, there’s plenty to get excited about if you like to wine and dine like I do. Where’s my nearest Weightwatchers again…?

5. “I've really noticed that you’ve been working hard these past few weeks.” This shows you’re paying attention to her life and that she’s not invisible to you. Appreciation of your girlfriend’s sheer existence will bag you a no permission required night out with the lads. I’ve been pleased to learn that my love tips from last month have been helping relationships to flourish. Follow my five point plan and rest assured you’ll have a happy Valentine’s too.

MY WORD OF THE MONTH

VALENTINE’S

My favourite day of the year and this is why: Millie’s Cookie when I could have got two Bargain Buckets for the same price, “No your bum doesn’t look big in that, the mirror must be warped,” roses that die within two days, heart-shaped pizza (where did the rest of the dough go?), chocolates because her bum isn’t big…, romantic meal in a restaurant packed in like sardines, “When are you two getting married?”, fresh bed sheets because it’s romantic, more chuffing candles, extortionately priced greeting card and rose scented plug-ins to replace the Christmas fragrant ones.

GOOD LUCK CELLO AND KARL Two of my city boxing pals Cello Renda and Karl Wheeler go on the road next month as they bid to get ever closer to fulfilling their professional boxing dreams. can’t wait to get back into the ring after a year of inactivity following his brave Prizefighter final where he dug deep and fought like a warrior while nursing a broken hand.

Cello will be fighting live on Sky Sports at the NEC in Birmingham on Saturday March 5 when he takes on Ben Wilkes in a contest that could be an eliminator for either the English or British title. Cello is revved up as always and

IS WORKING OUT A DOG’S LIFE? The last time I saw our city Olympian and Strictly champion Louis Smith he was as happy as a dog with a bone and now I know why. He’s teamed up with MORE TH>N and Wagglepets to front the first ever celebrity fitness video for man and dog to illustrate the importance of a happy and healthy lifestyle for our canines.

Karl will be hoping to bring home the British Challenger Cruiserweight Belt when he goes toe to toe against unbeaten Biola Kudus at the Mecca of British boxing that is Bethnal Green’s York Hall on March 19.

According to research one in three dogs are classified as overweight – enter Louis. He’s swapped the pommel horse for man’s best friend in 'Petsercise with Louis Smith'. Our Team GB hero guides us through a fun and high tempo home workout with Titch the Jack Russell and Gift the Collie.

Team Wheeler are massively motivated following December’s shock defeat to Yavor Marinchev and a win next month could see Karl fight in Peterborough in May.

In no time you and your dog will be banging out:

Both fighters are the nicest guys you’ll ever meet on the local boxing scene and both deserve to come back victorious. For tickets visit their Facebook pages.

• ‘Pro Cobra’ (shoulder and back workout where your dog chases a treat in your hands)

The 10-minute video includes a mixture of simple cardio and core-strengthening exercises that’ll get you and your dog breaking into a sweat.

• ‘Figure of Eights’ (squat and lead your dog through your legs in a figure of eight motion) • ‘Bicycle Crunches’ (your dog jumps between alternating legs)

We’re dog mad in the UK and I’m sure it won’t be long before someone inspired by this video introduces ‘bring your dog to the gym day’…

CHANCE TO MEET RIDDICK BOWE Staying with boxing and another event that shouldn’t be missed is the visit to our city of former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world Riddick Bowe. Bowe is the latest in a long line of boxing greats brought to Peterborough by promoter Kevin Sanders. Expect another evening of good food at The Solstice, an auction of boxing memorabilia and a photo opportunity with the big puncher himself on Thursday March 31. Inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Bowe is famed for being the first fighter to knock down and defeat Evander Holyfield to claim the undisputed world heavyweight title in 1992. Holyfield won the rematch in the following year, which was Bowe’s only professional loss. In 1995 Bowe became the first fighter to stop Holyfield when he won their third bout. To reserve your place call Kevin on: 07872 601467.

Valentine’s Day celebrations the Pizza Pasta Restaurant has just launched a delicious new menu. This restaurant was opened in May 2015 with a fresh new look, neon lighting, an adjacent Tote and bar area and an open kitchen where you can see the chefs work their magic. It’s the month of love, so for the February edition of Food Glorious Food, I thought I’d give all you love birds out there a little heads up on where you can dine to enjoy an evening of delicious food, smooth drinks and hopefully add some loving into the mix too.

TASTE THE ORIENT THIS VALENTINE’S East restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy some romance this Valentine’s Day. The floating eatery offers beautiful views of the River Nene in a candlelit setting. Their delicious Oriental Valentine’s menu runs from February 12 – February 14 and includes tempura prawns, honey spareribs, aromatic duck, tamarind

A

s we approach the 1st anniversary of Bill’s opening in Peterborough, I thought I’d pop along to the popular city centre restaurant, sample some of their fine foods and find out more about the restaurant chain with the distinctly independent feel!

Bill’s dad spent his life dedicated to growing food and gave Bill a small space to do with as he pleased on the high street in Lewes. Bill turned the space into a thriving grocery store but after it was ruined by a flood, he opened an eatery which has since grown to include more than 70 restaurants nationally. Unlike some other restaurant chains, Bill’s has kept an independent feel and the theme follows suit from the market-style, rustic grocer look. You’ll find recipes on blackboards and a deli style feel running throughout the eatery. This styling adds to a great eating experience which has gained Bill’s a fantastic reputation.

MAKE A DATE WITH BILL’S 18

www.espmag.co.uk

Supporting local producers is a strong ethos of Bill’s and many of their delicious products such as the tasty jams, are produced by a family run business, who, I’ve been told, also supply to Buckingham Palace! They like to use seasonal ingredients

cashew chicken, passion fruit and mango sorbet with Japanese cheesecake topped with pomegranate. Once you’ve dined, why not pop downstairs to Charters bar for a drink and even some live music later. Now that’s what I call a good night!

so you’ll find plenty of variety as the menu changes every nine weeks. A nice touch is the ‘little store’ at the front of the restaurant where you can purchase some of the tasty ingredients Bill’s use in their meals like the house salad dressing and oils. You can also buy Italian coffee which is made in Italy by the Muzziti family, purchase award-winning truffles, which are perfect for a Valentine’s gift, alongside tea, teapots, wine and branded jute bags! There will always be a great selection of steaks and grills, sharer boards (again, perfect for February 14th!), salads, sides and desserts on the menu. If you are looking to treat a special person in your life to a date at Bill’s, I highly recommend you start your night with a sparkle and try one of their fab cocktails. I was rather fond of the Bill’s Pink Spritz which is a mix of London dry gin, rhubarb cordial, cocchi rosa and pink grapefruit all lovingly topped with Bill’s pink lemonade – delicious! For more info on opening times, menus and offers at the restaurant on Church Street, Peterborough visit www.bills-website.co.uk.

FoodNews CARLUCCIO’S AMORE VALENTINE’S Amore range. These authentic Italian gifts are a fantastic way to spoil the one you love and get yourself some major brownie points too. The range includes hand-decorated white and dark chocolates, a bouquet of milk chocolate roses and prosecco, Tarallucci al vino, sweet biscuits flavoured with red wine amongst many other delicacies.

With love in the air this month and with the Italians being known for their romantic and passionate ways (it’s true!), I highly recommend a visit to Carluccio’s on Cumburgate near Queensgate and treat your favourite person to something tasty from their

BRAZILIAN FLAVOURS ON OUR DOORSTEP If you haven’t tried it yet, Peterborough now has it’s very first Rodizio grill bar, Sabor Brasil. For those that don’t know, a Rodizio grill bar is an all-youcan-eat style of restaurant service and now us lucky lot can enjoy this popular style of dining right here at home. Situated on Broadway, make sure you visit for some tasty food including Brazilian, Portuguese and African dishes, cocktails and even some dancing! There are salsa lessons every Wednesday and it’s Latin party night Fridays and Saturdays with DJ Juan Carlos.

As well as a delicious selection of Valentine’s treats for your loved one (or yourselves!), Carluccio’s also has a special three-course Valentine’s Day menu, which will be served from February 11 – 14 for £19.95 per person.

SUNDAYS NEW BBQ NIGHTS Now this is one venture I’m extremely excited about! Sundays, the popular independent restaurant in Cumbergate is now offering diners a mouth-watering selection of smoked meats during the evenings. Using locally sourced meat that will be smoked on site for a minimum of 14 hours, you can expect those taste-buds to be well and truly singing afterwards. Alongside the meat, there’s a selection of homemade coleslaws and other delicious sides.

GET COSY IN STAMFORD The Cosy Club in Stamford is a real favourite of mine and is the perfect place to dine, drink and have a natter. This Valentine’s Day, the trendy eatery is offering a delicious three-course meal for £29.95 per person which includes a wild mushroom bruschetta with mascarpone, Italian cheese and truffle oil, a baked spinach and ricotta rotolo with pine nuts, slow-

cooked tomato, Italian cheese (yes, I like Italian cheese!), served with a warm tomato comfit and basil pesto dressing all followed by a homemade chocolate brownie. Now if that hasn’t got your taste buds going, I’m not sure what will! For the full Valentine’s Day menu, visit www.cosyclub.co.uk.

CUDDLE UP WITH A PIZZA If you prefer to stay in and cosy up this Valentine’s night why not curl up with the ESP Mega Movie Meal Deal with London Road Papa Luigi. Stick on your fave romantic DVD and share a delicious 12” pizza, two side orders and of course a tub of Haagen-Dazs ice cream! It’s £14.95 so you can spend more on a gift! Call 01733 895555.

or archaeologists working on the site at Must Farm quarry near Whittlesey discovering some of the best preserved Bronze Age artefacts ever found in Britain is a game changer.

“The city's Roman, medieval and prehistoric archaeology has been internationally famous for at least 30 years. It is time local people started to be proud of their uniquely rich heritage.”

Photos: Cambridge Archaeological Unit

The £1.1 million four-year project funded by Historic England (formerly known as English Heritage) and building products manufacturer Forterra, which owns the Must Farm quarry, sheds new light on the day to day lives of our Bronze Age ancestors. The Cambridge Archaeological Unit, Division of Archaeology, University of Cambridge is carrying out the excavation of 1,100 square metres and is now halfway through the project.

It’s proved to be a treasure trove of glimpses into our past with everything from 3,000-year-old rugs and jewellery to human remains!

Large circular wooden houses built on stilts collapsed in a dramatic fire 3,000 years ago and plunged into a river, preserving their contents in astonishing detail. It’s a fantastic time capsule of everyday life as these are the best-preserved

“A dramatic fire 3,000 years ago combined with subsequent waterlogged preservation has left to us a frozen moment in time...” Archaeologist Francis Pryor, who discovered Flag Fen in Peterborough over 30 years ago, and who’s since gone on to work on TV’s Time Team, is keen to emphasise just how important this find is for the city. “It's part of the same story as Flag Fen, so it’s just as significant. I'm very excited. In fact the world outside Peterborough seems rather more excited than the city itself.” A while back we told you about the Must Farm log boats which were unearthed during the dig and are currently being preserved at Flag Fen. They’ve already revealed great insights into the time but Francis believes this huge new discovery of this incredibly well preserved Bronze Age settlement will further add to the attraction of the city for tourism and heritage – “I hope the two sites will link together in a single, unified display at Flag Fen.

Bronze Age dwellings ever found in Britain. Pots have even been found with meals inside! Duncan Wilson, Chief Executive of Historic England, said: “A dramatic fire 3,000 years ago combined with subsequent waterlogged preservation has left to us a frozen moment in time, which gives us a graphic picture of life in the Bronze Age. We are learning more about the food our ancestors ate, and the pottery they used to cook and serve it. We can also get an idea of how different rooms were used. This site is of international significance and its excavation really will transform our understanding of the period."

David Gibson, Archaeological Manager at the Cambridge Archaeological Unit, Division of Archaeology, University of Cambridge said: “This time so much more has been preserved – we can actually see everyday life during the Bronze Age in the round. It’s prehistoric archaeology in 3D.” As the dig continues there are bound to be even more exciting discoveries and after the excavation is complete, the team will take all the finds for further analysis and conservation. Eventually they’ll be displayed at Peterborough Museum and at other local venues so we should finally get to see them up close. The end of the four year project will see a major publication about Must Farm and an online resource detailing the finds. paparazzi Caught in the act? New research from Oxford University produced for CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale) has revealed that people who have a ‘local’ pub are not only significantly happier than those who don’t, but also have higher life satisfaction and have more close friends. We couldn’t agree more, so we sent ESP photographer Mike Harris along to capture the action at The Crab and Winkle in Werrington, where Mick Davison and his band Frankly My Dear were playing and The Cock Inn, in Werrington where locals were loving the Karaoke! JESS GLYNNE It’s Brits month and our gorgeous cover star Jess Glynne is quite rightly up for three awards.

I

t’s been full on for the past year for Jess with a series of successful singles, her first album I Cry When I Laugh (the fastest selling album debut of the year!) and a sold out tour at the end of last year. Now she might be getting ready to hit the Brits on February 24 but she also has some extra tour dates lined up giving fans another chance to catch her live.

Jess has recently been hitting the States for the first time but these latest tour dates see her headline her biggest UK venues to date and kick off on February 17 at Usher Hall, Edinburgh, followed by The Apollo, Manchester on the 18th, Brixton Academy, London on the 20th and Academy, Birmingham on February 26. After that she’s off to Europe before returning here for some gigs in the spring and summer. Jess performed a great set at the Brits launch and has been nominated for British Breakthrough Act, British Female Solo Act and British Single for Hold My Hand. She shot to fame on Clean Bandit’s single Rather Be and hasn’t looked back since. Her debut album, which rocketed straight to the top of the UK charts, sold over 120k copies in under four weeks – no surprise really after she bombarded the charts with some great tunes and was never far from TV shows, festivals and collaborations. Her single Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself sees her distinctive voice at its very best and has spent weeks and weeks in the Top 40 since its release in the summer. It sits at the very heart of Jess’s debut album I Cry When I Laugh on Atlantic Records – an album which aims to redefine the classic break up album and turn it into something positive. Jess describes the day that she signed her record contract as “the happiest and saddest day of my life.” Professionally, she had come of age, earning the respect of an industry she’d

28

www.espmag.co.uk

fought long and hard to win a place in. Here was the proof that her talents for singing, songwriting and performance were ready for their close-up. Personally, she was in pieces, brokenhearted from a two-year relationship that made her question everyone and everything. When she began documenting her exact feelings in song for I Cry When I Laugh, Jess decided to take an alternative route to the usual searing piano ballads. “I wanted this record to be about hope,” she says. The four songs at the heart of I Cry When I Laugh are divined from one rewarding, traumatic, consuming affair. Hold My Hand feels as it speaks, an anthem to positivity and personal communion, written with Jess’s most consistent collaborator and musical soul sister, Janeé ‘Jin Jin’ Bennett. It is also the key to unlocking the other key tracks. Don’t Be So Hard is about painting a smile on, while Gave Me Something is about always thinking you’ll be a certain kind of girl and then turning into something else. And then Take Me Home, the most downbeat track on the album, is about being able to revisit that sad moment. She allowed herself one ballad, after all. One of the album’s closing tracks – Saddest Vanilla – sees Jess singing alongside multimillion selling British popstar Emeli Sande, the only artist to feature on the album.

“I needed to believe in it,” she says. “I needed the record to tell a story. I needed it to feel like me.” By looking inwards she hopes to reach out. “This album is about a girl who was a happy-go-lucky person, a bit of trouble, got her heart-broken and found her way through that not by being sad but by seeing hope and not letting it overtake her.” In the midst of her dramatic rise to fame Jess was out of the picture for a while when she had to have vocal surgery, but while she was recovering she found herself once again sitting at the top of the charts, featuring on Tinie Tempah’s single Not Letting Go. In August she made a celebrated return to live performing at V Festival, before she embarked on her first ever US tour. It looks to us like this powerful singer can bounce back from most things life throws at her, and despite her heartbreak life is definitely heading the right way. If this lady doesn’t walk away from the 02 Arena with at least one Brit Award we’ll be very surprised! www.jessglynne.co.uk

Movie Previews Cast:Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein Director: Tim Miller

The buzz is off the chain for this crude and comedy-laden superhero jaunt featuring Ryan Reynolds as the ‘Merc with a Mouth’. The film’s publicity has all been about the ‘shock factor’ with its R-rated material being highlighted through multiple trailers and posters – as Reynolds reprises the role he briefly played in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. But this time he takes the beloved character to the extreme, as Reynolds’ former Special Forces operative-turned-mercenary Wade Wilson is double-crossed by a rogue experiment – that was meant to cure his cancer – and is left for dead.

Fortunately it does leave him with accelerated healing powers and enhanced abilities, and after adopting the alter ego Deadpool looks to hunt down the man – Ed Skrein’s (Transporter: Refuelled) Ajax – who nearly destroyed his life, with the aid of fellow X-Men Copycat (Morena Baccarin) and Colossus (Stefan Kapicic). Whether this will be a one-trick pony or one of the surprise hits of the year, only time will tell…

The iconic sixties/seventies British TV comedy series gets a movie remake for a new generation – as a ragtag Home Guard platoon deal with a visiting female journalist (Catherine Zeta Jones) and a German spy as World War II draws to its conclusion. POINT BREAK

PRIDE & PREJUDICE & ZOMBIES

A teenager (Dylan Minnette) teams up with the daughter (Odeya Rush) of a mysterious author (Jack Black) after he unintentionally unleashes the monsters that are locked inside his books in a Jumanji-esque fashion. They then have to try and save the inhabitants of their small Delaware town, after the demons wreak havoc in this family fantasy-adventure for slightly older kids.

Only time will tell if this is another pointless remake of a classic action movie, with ex-Home and Away actor Luke Bracey and Edgar Ramirez taking over the roles made famous by Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze respectively. Young FBI agent Johnny Utah (Reeves) infiltrates a group of extreme sports athletes suspected of masterminding a string of corporate heists.

Jane Austen’s classic tale of the tangled relationships between lovers from different social classes in 19th century England is faced with a new challenge – an army of undead zombies. Cinderella and Downton Abbey actress Lily James stars alongside Boardwalk Empire’s Jack Huston, Game of Thrones’ Lena Headey and former Doctor Who Matt Smith, in this horror-romance.

THE REVENANT SPOTLIGHT Cast: Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams

Released

JAN

This biographical-drama is reportedly in a two-horse race with The Revenant (see opposite) for the Best Film award – after receiving terrific reviews the other side of the pond. Oscar-nominees Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams star in this true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic church – with their year long investigations shaking the American city’s entire religious, legal and governmental establishments to the core. Michael Keaton, Liev Schreiber, Stanley Tucci and Mad Men’s John Slattery round off an impressive cast.

Cast: Leonardo Dicaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter, Forrest Goodluck & Lukas Haas Running Time: 2 Hrs 46 Mins Director: Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu This American frontier-set drama will undoubtedly split the room – but you simply can’t deny the quality of this Oscar Best Film front-runner. Despite 12 Academy Award nominations – including Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio and Best Supporting Actor for Tom Hardy – it won’t be everyone’s cup-of-tea as last year’s Best Director winner (who’s been nominated again here) Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Birdman) provides a spectacle to be revered. The action-laden trailer is undoubtedly deceptive, as what you’ll find here is a slow-burning tale of vengeance – with all the spectacular production design ‘bells and whistles’.

ZOOLANDER NO. 2 Cast: Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell

Released

When the world’s most beautiful musical celebrities (think cameos from Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande etc) are systematically assassinated with the iconic ‘Blue Steel’ look on their face made famous by former male model Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller), he and friend Hansel (Owen Wilson) are recruited by Interpol to try and find the protagonists. To do this they must enter the ever-changing world of high fashion once again – with characters played by Will Ferrell, Penelope Cruz, Kristen Wiig and Benedict Cumberbatch inhabiting the arena that used to be their domain.

GRIMSBY Cast: Sacha Baron Cohen, Mark Strong, Rebel Wilson

Released

FEB

A new assignment forces Mark Strong’s top secret black-ops agent Sebastian Grimsby to team up with his idiotic long-lost football hooligan brother Nobby (Sacha Baron Cohen) – in this movie from the makers of Borat. Now the perfect spy, with the perfect life and perfect girlfriend, must go off the radar in his brother’s hometown of Grimsby – living with Nobby and his wife Lindsey (Pitch Perfect’s Rebel Wilson) – before re-grouping with his sibling for the ultimate mission. This zany comedy co-stars Isla Fisher, Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane.

(15)

Stellar performances, nurturing direction, breathtaking landscapes, sensational cinematography, sharp editing, clever scripting, superbly choreographed (sometimes quite violent) set-pieces, and one of the most brutally visceral animal attack scenes ever seen on film – this is a adventure-drama that doesn’t leave anything on the table. Even all the actors involved said it was the ‘hardest shoot’ they’d ever done, and that’s coming from Tom Hardy – a man who’s just done George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road. Based on true events, DiCaprio stars as legendary explorer Hugh Glass, who – along with his Native American son Hawk (Forrest Goodluck) – is heading an expedition across the unchartered American frontier in the 1820s for a team of furtrappers, led by Domhnall Gleeson’s Captain Andrew Henry. After the team have to flee an attack from a tribe, their situation is further complicated when their tracker Glass, is mauled within an inch of his life by a grizzly bear. Two members of the team’s crew – Will Poulter’s rookie Bridger and Hardy’s worldweary veteran Fitzgerald – are left behind with Hawk, to make sure Glass’ seemingly impending death is

handled in a dignified fashion, as the rest make their way up the mountain to reach base. But when the distressed and nearmotionless Glass is double-crossed by Fitzgerald – with deadly lifechanging repercussions – he sets out on an emotionally and physicallydraining path of vengeance to track down his nemesis by using all of his knowledge of the wilderness to survive, complete with a broken leg, crippling injuries and body-altering lacerations. With Fitzgerald on his radar, Glass has to avoid potentially deadly altercations and navigate the vicious winter-heavy terrain to try and make it back to civilisation – and ultimately find redemption. Unfortunately this slow and methodical tale – after a quite explosive start – might be hard work for some casual cinema-goers through its two and three-quarter hours run-time, but the efforts of everyone involved are never in doubt. It may become a bit too self indulgent for some tastes, but setting DiCaprio and Hardy loose in Inarritu’s beautifully-realised playground will more than likely lead this to Oscar glory – and also snag Leo that gong he has prized for so long. BARKERS GIVES YOU A HEAD START ON STYLING AND BEAUTY… Whether you’re in the trade or just looking for stockists of your favourite hair products, Barkers hair and beauty product supplies is now bigger and better with a much greater product range and an even larger beauty section. his family run company offers more than just supplies of stock, they’re also a great source of support to their customers. Locally based they’re in a great position to understand the needs of the area, their staff all have extensive backgrounds in the industry and they can share a wealth of expertise, advice and support.

T

Barkers are the local authorised suppliers of the Matrix range and stock an incredible range of the best professional products from Nioxin and Biolage to Catwalk and Wella. Beauty names include Orly nails and Crazy Angel Tanning. For the guys grooming sector there’s American Crew, Vines Vintage, men-u and Wahl. The Barkers team can also help educate and offer colouring and beauty courses, they even have a salon area in the store where they can run demonstrations. So whatever you want to learn, perhaps how to become a nail technician and go independent, Barkers can help.

locally the team are happy to take enquiries from the public too. All the products they stock are tried and tested by their staff, many of whom are still active in the industry so who better to advise on what to use and how best to use it?

Executive Director Linda Carman says the aim of Barkers is to stand out form the crowd by offering friendly, supportive and flexible service to both the independent technicians and stylists as well as local salon owners – “We aim to be the salon’s stock cupboard and allow them to buy as much or as little product as and when they require it rather than insisting on bulk orders that sit on their shelves costing them money until they’re sold. There’s no minimum order and we offer regular free deliveries.

“We’re also very competitive on price and like to share the deals...”

www.espmag.co.uk

They offer great prices, but pop in on a Sunday and try out their Wheel of Fortune where you can spin the wheel to receive a discount from 5% - 20% on your products.

“We’re also very competitive on price and like to share the deals we have access to with our customers.” Most of us would check the washing instructions on an expensive new top before we washed it, yet when it comes to our hair we think using any off the shelf product from the supermarket will do just as well. But how often have you been to the hairdressers and later commented on how your hair never looks the same when you do it yourself? Linda says it’s down to the salons using professional products which are tailored to your hair’s needs – and the knowledge they have to prescribe the right treatment for you. If you need advice on products and which salons stock them

It looks like a slightly sporty sedan car – that is until the flood gates are opened and the turbos spool up, unleashing a torrent of performance which is comparable or exceeding that of some super cars of the same era.” I was recently chatting to a friend. Before long, he started reminiscing over his first love. It wasn’t a highschool sweetheart that got away, but a 1991 Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R. Gareth Mills from Peterborough has always had a thing for fast cars – and has owned many throughout the years, but this one in particular will always have a place in his heart. Gareth was one of a small number of people in the UK to own the Nissan Skyline GT-R at the time. He told me,“This car was never commercially sold in the UK by Nissan, it could only be obtained as a

grey import. Mine was one such example of this.” I could see the passion in his eyes as we talked about his pride and joy.“It was an absolute pleasure to drive,” he told me.“When the car was previously owned in Japan, its engine and associated components had been tinkered with to give it an extraordinary performance profile. This created something which was incredibly rare and special, yet for the performance relatively inexpensive.” Gareth would get a lot of attention cruising through the streets of Peterborough. He explained,“The

I was told of one night that stood out whilst driving the Nissan Skyline. “Whilst heading down a country lane late at night, I had the unfortunate situation of encountering a rather impatient tail-gaiter. The car hogging my rear view mirror was impatiently disrespecting my space and driving unacceptably close. What the driver perhaps didn't know was that a turbo charged car such as this is typically set up to run rich (overfuelling), and as a result, often results in un-burnt fuel entering the exhaust pipe. A fast down shift and a lick of flame inside the exhaust was enough to encourage the other driver to back off.”

If chick-flicks have taught me anything, it’s that even some of the best relationships just aren’t to be. “The decision to part ways was a very difficult one to make,” Gareth told me.“The primary being the complexity and maintenance required to keep a 20 year-old such as this in peak form required a specialist company, and while I’d formed a good relationship with one, they were simply too far away to make it sustainable.” What’s you Pride and Joy? THIRD YEAR FOR PETERBOROUGH CLASSIC AND VINTAGE VEHICLE SHOW I’m excited to hear registration is now open for owners of classic and vintage vehicles to sign up for the third Peterborough Classic and Vintage Vehicle show. I love this event and always find some dream rides to drool over! many owners clubs, including Jaguar, Triumph, Volkswagen, MG, Mini and Ford. The variety of vehicles ranged from Ferraris and Rolls Royces to Morris Minors and Ford Anglias.

Last September saw more than 450 vehicles on show at the Embankment in September, and the organisers hope to break all records with the 2016 event. Get Saturday September 3 and Sunday September 4 in your diary and get ready to get up close and personal with classic and vintage cars, caravans, motorcycles, scooters, commercial and agricultural vehicles, buses and exmilitary transport. It was councillor Paula Thacker MBE, who came up with the original idea for the show and she told me – “The array of vintage cars and buses parked on the Embankment really is a dazzling sight. Last year thousands of visitors, young and old, had a fabulous day out and the 2016 event promises to be even bigger and better.

Annette Joyce, service director for city services and communications at Peterborough City Council, added: "We're excited to be supporting this show for the third time. It's a superb, family friendly event and there will be plenty of entertainment so that visitors can make a real day of it." Even better news is it’s free to attend, and features a host of shopping opportunities, hot food stalls and a fun fair. Proceeds from the sale of the show’s programme will be split between two worthy charities. The show’s open to the public from 10.30am on both Saturday and Sunday. New Fragrance Shop The Fragrance Shop has opened its doors in Queensgate… Just in time to find something great for Valentine’s Day.

Barkers Product of The Month

I went along to try a sample of their new scent in the Donna Karan Liquid Cashmere range – exclusive to the Fragrance Shop and Harrods only! It’s a delicate fragrance that feels so soft on my skin (hence the cashmere name) and had a lovely vanilla musky smell. It’s also in the most amazing bottle shape I’ve ever seen for a perfume! A must have for Valentine’s Day.

I’d like to officially welcome the sponsors of my Health and Beauty column. I popped down to meet the gang at Barkers Hairdressing Supplies based in Woodston. It’s a shopper’s paradise with shelves stacked with beauty products! My favourite thing was that the team there want to get to know every customer who comes through the door, and generally make it a fun experience whether you work for a salon or are an independent wanting the latest new products. Make sure you check out this page each month for their product of the month review and some top hair and beauty tips straight from the experts.

Body Essentials For Valentine’s Day

Photo: Emma Bothamley

This month, being a proud blonde, I’ve tried out one of their great purple shampoo products: Total Results So Silver shampoo. I’ve used it once or twice a week for the past three weeks now, and it’s been excellent at removing the brassy tones I used to get around my roots. A must have purchase for fellow fair headed friends!

Make sure you speak to their lovely Store Manager James who’s more than happy to help. All the staff there are trained to know what’s in each product, so they can recommend similar scents and help with your choice, so whether you want a scent to attract that certain someone, or to get yourself in the mood for some romance, just put them to the test!

Are you looking forward to Valentine’s Day but dreading the fact that the Christmas parties have left stubborn bulges that even the New Year’s resolution are not shifting? Fear not, My Body Essentials (MBE) have the answer, they've been successfully shifting bulges for over three years, with their Lipo Belt you too could lose several centimetres in all the right places. Regular sessions once or twice a week would help the dreamy little number that your Valentine found so fetching at the start of all the parties fit you nicely again. At just £15 a session you can’t go wrong. Give MBE a call on 01733 305102 or take a look at www.mybodyessentials.co.uk and you can quickly start getting your body into shape again.

Did you know that February is Heart Month? The British Heart Foundation are encouraging everyone to make small changes towards a healthier lifestyle. One of the suggestions is to spend just 10 minutes every day being ‘active’. They say making small changes to your daily routine can make a big difference to your heart health – which in the long term could save your life. What could you do in ten minutes? Well, I’ve decided to take on the challenge and for 10 minutes every day I’m going to use a hula hoop and try and become a pro whilst toning those tummy muscles too!

For Flawless Skin I’ve bought a new Max Factor Lasting Performance Foundation this month from the local Boots store (a bargain at £9.99). Here are my tips for buying and applying your foundation to look flawless: Buying: Select the three colours that are the closest match to your jawline in the mirror. Once selected, apply them in three stripes on the front of the chin – the one that almost disappears on the skin is very likely to be the perfect one. Applying like a pro: For the perfect canvas, make sure your skin is clean and moisturised. Wait five minutes before you apply foundation to let moisturiser sink in. To get an airbrushed finish, blend makeup all over with a medium size brush, including the eye area, starting in the middle and working your way out Finish the look with a luminous powder. The newer translucent powders that reflect the light help skin glow and take down shine.

BEING

GET HAPPY HORMONES WITH ‘SEED CYCLING’! Hormones are like everything in life, they need to be balanced to support physical, mental and emotional well-being. Today, our hormones are sadly being affected by the world we live in, particularly from the chemicals in our water, food, plastic bottles and wraps, oestrogens from the contraceptive pill, chemicals in our personal hygiene products, make up and more. By adding different seeds at different times during the female hormone cycle you can help support the body in producing the needed hormone at the time and help to bind and eliminate any excess. HOW TO SEED CYCLE – For women who know their cycle start as follows: Day 1-14 take 1 tablespoon each of flax seed power and pumpkin seeds (also grind these). Then change over as follows: Day 14-28 – take 1 tablespoon each of sunflower seeds and sesame seeds (grind both up for best effects). For women who have a cycle that is all over the place, you have just stopped the contraceptive pill, or stopped breast feeding or being affected by hormone imbalances with irregular cycle, then try the following: On the full moon – start as Day 1-14 as above. On the new moon - (14 days later) – introduce the seeds as day 14-28.

N

ot only the environment but chronic stress (which many people live with today), high sugary diets from sweets, chocolate, sugary cereals and excess alcohol can also affect our hormonal balance.

Hormonal imbalances may show up in symptoms from heavy periods, fibroids, infertility, cyclic migraines, premenstrual tension (PMT), spotty skin, mood disorders and more. Female hormones are cyclic, generally 28 days dominated by Oestrogen and Progesterone (there are other hormones involved but these are the dominating hormones). Day 1-14 – follicular phase which is dominated by Oestrogen Day 14-28 – luteal phase which is dominated by Progesterone (as Oestrogen should slowly start to decrease) With diet and lifestyle playing a key role in keeping this delicate balance of hormones in order, it is also important to be mindful of where we may be adding environmental chemicals in

38

www.espmag.co.uk

our daily life and eliminating what we can such as removing plastic bottles from your life, use more natural hygiene products etc. A simple addition to your diet called Seed Cycling may be helpful for hormonal balance.

It’s said that women’s hormones and menstrual cycle are affected and influenced by the moon cycles and you will see that many babies are born on or around the full moon. You can add the seeds into breakfast, smoothies, sprinkled over veggies, fruit, ice-cream or added to some soup (not too hot soup).

‘A simple addition to your diet called Seed Cycling may be helpful for hormonal balance.’ Different seeds offer various lignans which may help to bind and remove excess hormones whilst offering essential fatty acids (EFA’s) to help hormone production. Seeds as well as being rich in Lignans and EFA’s are also excellent sources of fibre which help to eliminate hormones, as well as providing key nutrients such as Zinc, Selenium, Magnesium, Vitamin E and more.

Be patient with this as it can take a few cycles to see a difference, it might be that more nutritional or naturopathic interventions are needed including detoxification/cleansing methods but at least give it a try. Here’s to happy balanced hormones. Karen www.karendevine.co.uk

TOP OF THE BILL – THE ONE COMEDY GIG TO SEE IN 2016! Photos: Andy Hollingworth

his best’ while the Evening Standard describe it as an ‘Uproariously funny show’.

The legendary part troll, part comedian, part musician and all round comedy genius is bringing his 2016 tour Limboland to the Peterborough Arena on Saturday June 4. It's the first major comedy show the arena’s put on and with a 5,000 seat capacity will be the largest live comedy show ever staged at an indoor venue in Peterborough.

Bill, who had six highly successful years as a team captain on BBC2’s much loved pop quiz, Never Mind The Buzzcocks, says of the show – “It’s about not living up to our own expectations. We have a vaulted idea of what we imagined we’d achieve and then we realise the reality is somewhat different. The show explores the gap between the two.”

Lucy Craymer, marketing manager at the Peterborough Arena told us – "We are thrilled to have him and looking forward to attracting more big name comedy to the Peterborough Arena in the future."

All I know is that's it's great that comedy fans in Peterborough won't have to travel out of the city to see him like they've had to do in the past. Let's get this gig sold out, and give Bill the welcome to Peterborough he deserves!

It promises to be an amazing night of entertainment with Limboland getting some great reviews in the national press. On the tour’s opening night, The Guardian's review announced this was Bill ‘back at

THE POSH PAGE ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

I’ve worked at the football club for 14 years and during that time I’ve witnessed some incredible players at close quarters from Wayne Rooney to Cristiano Ronaldo and from Alan Shearer to Deli Alli.

Photos: Joe Dent / www.theposh.com

In May 2016 (from May 9 - 22 inclusive), Peterborough United Football Club is offering supporters the chance to demonstrate their skills because we have introduced a 'Pitch Hire' package for May (subject to availability) and this exclusive offer is not just us letting you loose on the pitch – you will get changed in the dressing rooms, line up in the tunnel and enter the pitch to your chosen entrance music.

I have seen some superb Posh players in my time too including George Boyd, Britt Assombalonga, Dwight Gayle, Jimmy Bullard and in recent weeks, Martin Samuelsen. They have all graced the ABAX Stadium pitch. I still get a massive buzz, as a Posh fan, walking out of the tunnel. I know I am fortunate to be able to sit in the dressing room whenever I want (well strictly speaking not from 1.30pm until 5.15pm on a match day

42

www.espmag.co.uk

– and yes I have been tempted to see if the manager would select me) and I can say with great pride that I have scored at the London Road End (and yes there was a goalkeeper before you all start chirping). I’m no different to a lot of Posh fans across the city and beyond. I dream of scoring the winner in a match at the ABAX and normally it’s an acrobatic overhead kick from the half way line. Well, dreams can become a reality.

Your friends and family are welcome to share your big day too, and can cheer you on from either the dugouts or the stands. Of course, that will add to the pressure of ensuring that you score, but every footballer is nervous when they cross that white line, trust me on that. Pitch hire starts from just £900 inc VAT for a three hour experience. So what are you waiting for? Whether you’re the gaffer of your pub team or just think you and your mates have always been destined to play at the ABAX Stadium, get in touch now as places will be limited. To book or to find out more, email commercial@theposh.com or call 01733 865665!

If you happen to be any good, then we might just offer you a lucrative contract, but please be aware, there is a disclaimer. You have to be very, very good. I would like to conclude this page by just referencing the Emirates FA Cup. Now we’ve progressed into round four with a fine win over Preston North End at the ABAX in early January. I don’t know whether it’s just me, but I get incredibly nervous watching any kind of cup draw and the fourth round draw was no different. We were pulled out pretty much straight away to face a potential Premier League side in West Bromwich Albion, but I was really hoping for Manchester United away. Not because of the prestige of the Red Devils, not because of the superb surroundings at Old Trafford, nor the financial aspect of making a bit of money out of the tie. I wanted to play Manchester United away because I believe we would beat them.

INTRODUCING:

THE MAN OF SOUL - MR SKIP STUART by Anna Ruggiero “I got involved with Stanground Youth Club and my love for performing went from there. “After a long period DJing at the club, I joined Steve Allen Discotheques which were starting to get well established in Peterborough.”

“You have to feel your soul” Stuart Skipworth aka Skip Stuart, is well known in the soul game and has a wealth of music knowledge and experience, so naturally I couldn’t wait to catch up with him and see what he had to say about music, radio and vinyl. Stuart’s been a firm fixture on the local music scene way before I started to venture out and after 30 years plus of DJing, he is still as popular now as he was back in the day. Stuart tells me: “It was the early 70s when my life as a DJ kicked off.

44

www.espmag.co.uk

Peterborough isn’t perhaps somewhere you’d initially associate with soul music, but back then, when Peterborough was a small town in the throws of developments, 7” vinyl soul tunes were being played at various places in town and Stuart instantly fell in love with the music and the vibe. He continues: “The Phonograph behind The Bull Hotel was not a very big venue, no alcohol was served, only bottles of Coke and cheese rolls, but boy the music was hot and this was the infancy of promotions of soul music in Peterborough. “The Spinning Wheel, which was the Bull & Dolphin near Rivergate, was also a very popular soul event, with American soul artists appearing there on a regular basis. “I was soon finding these type of events were springing up all the time in the city centre and l was in my element finding these new places to play at.

“The Bull and Dolphin gave me a DJ slot for a number of years and as nightclubs were opening up in town such as Annabel’s and Home, I was in popular demand! “The Wirrina was also packing them in along with the legendary all-nighters playing northern soul, as was the Fleet in Fletton. The youngsters of Peterborough were in their element!”

GET INTO THE GROOVE AT THE BREWERY TAP The Brewery Tap is a great venue for music and this February won’t disappoint music fans. Saturday Night Groove is a great event for music lovers as DJ Rick Allen plays the best hits from the 60s to the current day on February 6, 13 and 20 from 9pm2am with free entry. Groove Cartell, a funk and soul band from Peterborough, will be performing live at the Brewery Tap on Friday February 26 from 10pm until late and again, entry is free. If that’s not enough soul for you, put Saturday February 27 in your diary and enjoy some more good tunes, this time from the likes of Eddie Nash, Dave Lyes, Mark Goodlif and special guests who’ll be playing classic funk, soul, rare groove, RnB and house for a

charity gig – Gables III, The Funk Awakens. All proceeds will go the Macmillan Trust. Entry is £5 on the door.

These certainly seemed the glory days of the Peterborough soul scene but now funk and soul fans can enjoy Stuart’s carefully selected tunes being played at The Soul Lounge – a regular soul and funk night at The Three Horseshoes in Werrington. The night draws a great crowd all united by their love of good music.

The Crown Inn, 749 Lincoln Road, Peterborough PE1 3HD 07415 624262 • turnbullpeter16@gmail.com

Stuart is also a regular fixture at The Sunny Hunny Soul Weekender, a weekend of northern soul, Motown, jazz funk and modern soul. It really was great to meet a local legend who clearly has a massive passion for the music he plays and the vinyl he plays it on. “I still play on vinyl and always will. Plastic records have history and if they crackle a bit, it doesn’t matter. You always remember where you bought the record. You can feel it and then you can share it. That’s all I want to do, share the love and share the music.”

The next Soul Lounge is on Saturday February 6 when Stuart will be joined by Stevie Walsh, Johnny Boy Covell and guest DJs. You can also catch Stuart on Radio Peterborough every Sunday 3-5pm at www.radiopeterborough.co.uk.

Beatles material and musically introduced big guitar solos in the middle of standard Beatles songs, often bringing a lot of showmanship into the act by playing along the length of a bar top. We soon realised that the band had three lead singers and that allowed us to develop our set list into other music genres like The Stones, Eagles and AC/DC.”

The Dizzy Miss Lizzys are to perform their final gig on Saturday March 19 at Charters. They’ve decided to call it a day because guitarist/singer James Cluer will be emigrating to Canada with his wife Amanda. The band were formed to fulfil an engagement at the famous Cavern Club. Gizz Butt who’d become friends with original Beatles drummer, Pete Best had been invited to play at the renowned Liverpool venue but hadn’t got a suitable band so the Lizzys were formed when James and Gizz got together with Si Martin and Fozzy. Gizz explains – “In the initial stages we concentrated on

46

www.espmag.co.uk

The result was what we saw at this year’s Peterborough Beer Festival where they absolutely brought the house (tent) down. I suggested to Gizz that he enjoyed it as much as I did. He said – “We certainly did have a great time. That, along with Pete Thompson’s Hootenanny earlier in the year, were highlights of the Lizzys’ career. We thrive on

audience reaction and the Beer Festival crowd gave so much back to us. It was a tremendous night.” So why not find a replacement for James and carry on? Gizz told me – “We decided that with the balance we had, that we couldn’t see us ever replacing James and that it would be better to have a clean end to The Dizzy Miss Lizzys with everybody finishing with a smile on their face.”

Hopefully everybody will have a smile at their Charters gig and they’ll leave us with more great memories. These guys will certainly be a big loss to the Peterborough music scene so don’t miss their big farewell.

LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE GIRLS

A few weeks before Christmas, I compered a charity fundraising lunch for The Hospital’s Breast Cancer Unit brilliantly organised by Carol Collier and the day was a huge success partly due to a generous and enthusiastic audience. Also the special guests, Ian Waite from Strictly Come Dancing, and a performance by local singer, Nicole Lawrence made the event special. Nicole, of course was very successful in the X Factor a few years ago, and performed locally many times with her equally talented father, Greg. Having just arrived back from singing at a corporate function in Dubai, Nicole performed a stunning short set getting great audience participation from the lady diners.

“Quite honestly, with her voice, style and exciting live performance, Nicole’s talent is just too good for Simon Cowell... ” Quite honestly, with her voice, style and exciting live performance, Nicole’s talent is just too good for Simon Cowell and his manufactured wanabees! Whilst talking about talented local female singers and Strictly, I must mention another local product Hayley Sanderson. She was brought up in Peterborough and trained at The Key Theatre and local dance schools and has become a regular principal singer on the prime-time BBC show and has been there since the beginning. Her live performances on the show once again have earned countless accolades from contestants, judges and viewers. Once again Hayley is appearing on The Strictly Tour of the UK where she delivers a powerful solo set in addition to the voice of some of the dances. Peterborough should be very proud of these two talented ladies.

MORE BLUES BAND All of the individual members of The Blues Band were already held in admiration by generations of rhythm & blues fans when they formed back in 1979. Since then and over 20 albums later they continue to add to their growing army of followers, and it’s not unheard of to find three generations from the same family at a gig. Those of you who didn’t get the opportunity to see Paul Jones and Dave Kelly play their acoustic gig at Stamford Arts Centre have a second chance to see the duo in more familiar company when The Blues Band make a visit to the Key Theatre on Friday February 26. In addition to Paul and Dave, the other members of the band are Tom McGuinness, Rob Townsend and Gary Fletcher. Their ancestry dates back to groups such as Manfred Mann, Family and McGuiness Flint.

The band are today acknowledged throughout Europe and beyond as being amongst the very finest purveyors of rhythm & blues. They have inspired numerous other blues bands, many of which have come and gone but The Blues Band have remained a constant, increasingly popular fixture. A great venue for a talented band like these, you can get your tickets from the Key Theatre Box Office on 01733 207239 or www.vivacitypeterborough.com.

THE TREMBLING WILBURYS Remember the iconic Traveling Wilburys, the super group created by George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne? Their albums produced high quality material from all five, individually and collectively. Just as importantly the recording sessions were great fun and brought enjoyment to all of them. Claiming to be the first tribute to the originals The Trembling Wilburys, appear at Stamford Corn Exchange on Saturday March 5. Needless to say, all the musicians/vocalists in The Trembling Wilburys benefit from a formidable musical pedigree, which is audibly and visually evident in their superb replication of certain memorable hits, such as, Handle With Care, End of The Line and She's My Baby, to name a few. But they don’t just perform the Wilburys’ catalogue. Their highly extensive repertoire also includes classic hits of George, Roy, Bob, Jeff Lynne/ ELO and The Beatles, which, by definition, guarantees the audience an evening of superb entertainment.

Close your eyes, and you may believe that the original stars are performing. Open your eyes, and you will genuinely think that it is the real George Harrison on stage as Glen Knowler, who performs as George, is undoubtedly this country's most perfect lookalike, and soundalike. The same applies to Dave Collison, who performs as Roy Orbison, whose vocal range is compelling. Although they intended to tour together, circumstance prevented The Travelling Wilburys from ever appearing live together. But the Trembling Wilburys aim to bring their music to life in Stamford next month. Could be a fun night. The Box Office of Stamford Corn Exchange is 01780 766455.

A BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE NIGHT OUT… TAKE 2

A while back I told you about a great night out for fans of Robbie Williams and The Beautiful South with two great tributes heading our way. Well, you didn’t miss it, the night had to be rescheduled! Here’s your second chance to catch two of the country’s top tribute bands who play at Radius (above The Solstice) in Peterborough on Saturday February 27 as part of their UK tour. Topping the bill is Robbie Williams Banned, featuring Matt Byrne as 'Robbie' and bringing a live show bursting with exuberance and energy that packs a real punch. Back in the city for the first time in over 5 years, the band are excited at the prospect of an up-close-andpersonal gig at one of the city's top entertainment hotspots. "Last year was full-on for us," said Matt – a regular on the tribute circuit throughout the UK and across the world, including Ibiza, Germany and the Caribbean. "It's great getting to do this for a living. I've been doing it for over a decade now and can honestly say I'm having a blast."

As well as headlining stages on the Isle Of Wight and at Liverpool’s huge Mathew Street Festival, the band kicked off their last tour playing at the Cambridge University Summer Ball, sharing the stage with The Feeling, Wretch 32 and DJ Fresh. Matt is still buzzing from the whole experience. "It was mad, when we got there the organisers hadn't given us the festival line-up, so when the music started I thought there was a Feeling tribute band playing, before I realised it was actually The Feeling, who absolutely smashed it before we went on. So no pressure then! Luckily we have some big tunes and the noise the crowd made singing along to Angels was just incredible." Those that have seen Robbie Williams Banned will know that their gigs are always full of crazy antics and audience participation, performing hits such as Angels, Millennium, Let Me Entertain You, She's The One, Feel and Rock DJ. RWB are supported on the night by The Beautiful South and Housemartins top tribute act, Paul Heaton Fan Club. Playing singalong ‘South’ classics such as Perfect 10, Rotterdam, A Little Time and Don’t Marry Her as well as The Housemartins’ Happy Hour, Build and Caravan Of Love, this looks to be a tribute night not to be missed! Tickets are just £10 and available from The Solstice, or by phone on 01733 560231.

MCV SOUL NIGHT

There’s an early 2016 chance to see The Motor City Vipers perform one of their classic Soul Nights which have proved so popular over the past few years.

This time the band appear on Saturday February 6 at The Limetree in Walton, which has been well known as one of the key places to see live music and has a fabulous large music room at the back. This open venue will suit the MCV and the expected large following will create a great atmosphere. www.espmag.co.uk

LIVING LIFE AS BOWIE

Like many people around Peterborough, the team at the ESP headquarters were shocked about the sad news of David Bowie’s death. Our Twitter and Facebook pages were full of people stating that Bowie’s music had inspired them, whilst others said that they felt it was OK to be different thanks to his influence.

O

ne Peterborough guy whose everyday life is dedicated to David Bowie is Paul Henderson, who – with his band Aladdinsane – is widely regarded as the greatest Bowie tribute in the UK and beyond. I caught up with Paul to discuss all things Bowie, starting with how he came to be a tribute to the legend. “I was fascinated with David Bowie from a very young age,” he told me. “He was so different from everybody else. I loved his voice, his songs and his look. Watching Bowie was like watching someone from a different planet – I was hooked.” Paul once met the music icon in person. “I saw him briefly in 1997 during the Earthling tour at the rear of Rock City in Nottingham, prior to the show. There were only about eight of us there, so he came over and had a chat. I gave him a cassette of some of my own material which he thanked me for. He was really chatty, lovely and down to earth.”

You may have seen Paul perform locally, he and his band started playing local venues in Peterborough and other parts of Cambridgeshire in 2004. With time the band got bigger, as did their popularity and the venue sizes such as the Peterborough Beer Festival in 2007. But, Paul had the Bowie bug way before then. In 1993, he appeared on the hit TV Show, Stars In Their Eyes. “It was my

wife who applied for me. When I was asked to send a demo in, I thought, OK let’s see if anything happens,” Paul explained. “Out of ten thousand applicants I thought progressing with the show would be unlikely. Well, I got my first audition which took place at the Bull Hotel in Peterborough, before being contacted to go to Manchester for a second. Later that evening I received a phone call from Granada telling me I’d got through. “Matthew Kelly was a gem to work with and we all had many laughs with him backstage during filming. All of us contestants on the show had such a good time and felt privileged to have got that far, so none of us cared who won.” This wasn’t Paul’s only television appearance. “I ended up on The One Show in 2011, for a segment about David Bowie's famous Ziggy Stardust hair. I met Suzi Ronson, the wife of the very much missed Mick Ronson. The show was mainly about Suzi creating the infamous hairstyle for Bowie back in 1972. Suzi was working at a hair salon in Beckenham High Street before suddenly becoming part of Bowie's entourage. Her life changed just like that. I did a brief interview on the show and performed an acoustic version of Ziggy Stardust.”

THE DAY I MET BOWIE AND NEVER REALISED IT! As tributes have been paid from fans and musicians following the death of David Bowie, here at ESP we thought we'd share this recollection from our photographer Mike Harris – aka Mike Da Hat. Mike will be familiar to local fans of live music in Peterborough and Stamford through his photography and presence at live gigs, but in one of Mike's first ever jobs as an 18 year-old he worked at the Friars Music Club in Aylesbury, the venue that played a key role in David Bowie's live career. In September 1971 Bowie debuted his album Hunky Dory there, and in January 1972 gave his first performances in the guise of Ziggy Stardust. Then on July 15 he invited 50 of the top American music journalists to witness his gig as part of the UK leg of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars tour. Five years later on March 1, 1977, Bowie returned to the venue after producing Iggy Pop's album The Idiot to play keyboards as part of Iggy Pop's band. Mike Harris was there that night and takes up the story… "I worked for Friars Aylesbury in those days on security. I was quite young and not very big to be security, but there I was backstage in 1977, supposedly to stop the crowd rushing the stage from the right. There was just me at the bottom of the stage steps standing in the dark, and I was watching Iggy Pop doing his opening numbers. “There was a huge crowd, and all eyes were on Iggy. Then the back stage door opened and this tall guy came out and stood next to me at the bottom of the steps. It was too dark to see who it was, but he said ‘Hi’ and ‘What do you think?’, meaning what did I think about Iggy Pop and we just chatted

48

about the gig. I can't remember the exact conversation as at the time it was just a chat for about 5 minutes about music. The last thing he said was – ‘There's my cue, I'd better get on stage, see you!’ and he walked up the steps. He stopped at the top as the spotlight hit him and the crowd roared when they saw that it was David Bowie! At the time I had no idea it had been him I'd been talking to – I just thought it was another guy come to help me on security. I guess that the expression that springs to mind is – D'oh! “That night Iggy Pop was phenomenal, but Bowie never took the limelight from Iggy Pop, he just played his part as a band member never over playing his role and never trying to steal Iggy's glory. Considering how famous Bowie was at the time I thought that was pretty cool of him. He wasn't dressed up either, no make up, just a regular guy.” The newspaper clipping from The Evening Standard 1977 of the concert that Mike has, was taken from the spot he was positioned at back stage. Steve Gonzalez

Paul has had a colourful career as a Bowie tribute artist. I wondered if any particular moment stood out. “There are so many things. I guess one that stands out was travelling to Beckenham in 2001, where a good friend of mine lent me a 12 string guitar that David used to play in the late 60's early 70's – the same one used in the recording of Space Oddity. It was the unveiling of the Living Legend Plaque in David's honour at the venue Rat and Parrot (formerly known as the Three Tuns and now a Zizzi's) – where David started his arts lab project in 1969, performing new songs he was writing at the time, just before the success of Space Oddity. Here I was in the same spot where David used to play with the same guitar, performing songs from that time and with people there from that time. It was quite surreal.” Like many, Paul and his band are still mourning the death of Bowie, who died of cancer at the age of 69. He told me, “I will never forget that moment. I was invited over to Berlin to perform at Hansa studios, where David Bowie recorded his famous Heroes album – to coincide with David's 69th birthday and the release of the Blackstar album. There were around 350 fans present for the event. “When the news was broken to me on the Monday morning there were a group of us together at Bahnhof Zoo train station in Berlin. One of my friends was just checking the news on his mobile when he told us. We just felt numb and could not take in what we were reading. I went through being on cloud nine for the whole weekend, to having a horrid sinking feeling go through me. That moment will stay with me for the rest of my life.” Out of all the popular Bowie songs, I wondered which ones Paul enjoyed performing the most. “That’s a difficult one. I guess Life On Mars, Heroes and Rock n Roll Suicide, as all three of those tracks are classics and good testers on your vocals.” Bowie will clearly be missed by millions. It’s a shame I’ll never get to hear the legend live, but as a big fan of his music, it’s nice to know I can hear the next best thing. Aladdinsane are planning a special local charity gig soon and will also be appearing at Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre on Friday September 9. Tickets are £15.50 concessions £15.
