AEROBIC CHALLENGE FOR DEAFBLIND UK

NICE ICE Looks like the guys at ICE-Direct.com have done it again! They’ve looked at the ever-changing economic market and spotted a niche creating a new city centre ICE Express bargain store in Westgate, Peterborough, next to the Lloyds TSB bank. This was officially opened by our very own Face of ESP Claire Smith. The store specialises in a mix of recession busting, quick and easy gadgets needed to enhance your daily car journeys, such as Ipod Integration, FM modulators and loads of in-car and household electricals. Being Ice Direct they’ve wisely stocked household domestic clearance lines, and can offer amazing slashed deals such as steam irons from a credit crunch busting £6.99! They’ve redefined how toys are sold with their up to 50% off prices with radio controlled cars from as little as £7.99! The guys tell us you still get a full year’s manufacturer’s warranty plus with their ‘ICE price match policy’ they’ll always match a like-for-like price on the spot! Nice one guys, all that should make the dosh go further.

BE GREEN AFTER XMAS! So, the pressies are opened and the tin of Celebrations is empty, once you want to clear out the last vestiges of Christmas and are ready to ditch the tree, make sure go green! Peterborough City Council’s offering a tree shredding service to help you use the greenest way of disposing of your trees at Central Park on Sunday January 4 from 10am - 2 pm. Real Christmas trees will be shredded and if you’re a bit of a gardening type you can even take the chippings away with you. Don’t forget card, paper, television guides, newspapers, plastic bottles, aluminium and tin cans (there’ll be a few of those we’re sure!) as well as juice and milk cartons, can be recycled in your green bin. For more info see www.peterborough .gov.uk

It’s a free mic night for poetry and drama from 8pm onwards and seems to be building quite a following.

VOODOO BECOME STEALER

TACHE FOR CASH Top lip facial hair for guys may have gone out of fashion with the likes of Magnum PI and Freddie Mercury but there’s a good reason to bring it back… well for one month only! Guys are being encouraged to go for the ‘My Name is Earl’ look this month and grow a moustache in the name of charity. Sue Ryder Care have launched the Tache for Cash appeal and hope fellas will rise to the challenge and keep the Gillette far, far away when it comes to their top lip so they can raise loads of sponsorship. Come on guys, whether you’re follicley challenged and can only muster a shelf of bum fluff or can sport a manly hedgerow after two days of not shaving – join the challenge! For sponsorship forms and details see www.suerydercare.org or email Thorpe.fundraising@sueryder care.org or call 01733 330060. You’ll just need to get your sponsorship forms and photos through by January 29 and you could win a prize.

OPEN DAY AT FLETTON CLUB The guys over at Fletton Ex-Servicemen’s and Working Club on Fletton High Street are holding an open night to show what they have to offer… one

dontscrapthetap . c o m

There’s a new band on the block. Stealer have been in touch with ESP – these guys have risen from the ashes of the well respected local band Voodoo that broke up in February 2008. Three of the old band members, Rich Hall on vocals, Steve Pitts on guitar and Steve Valentine on bass have been joined by Lee Dash on drums and Russell Hill on keyboards. The band tell us they’ve been rehearsing solidly for ten months to ensure they have a very professional set of songs to perform. The whole set comprises of a musical tribute to the classic Rock/Blues band from the early 70's called ‘Free’ and includes their well known singles and album tracks, the band name derives from a Free song called ‘The Stealer’. They’ll be performing their first gigs in January and you can catch up with them at Mama Liz's Voodoo Lounge, Stamford on January 17 and at The Cherry Tree, Woodston on January 30.

THE NEW GOLF IS COMING The Crowsons dealership in Spalding is having a launch weekend from January 9 to Sunday January 11 to show off the all new Golf, so nip down if you fancy as sneak peek! They’re excited about this new model which they tell us has a luxurious interior, improved technology and safety feautures and even its fuel efficiency is making it by far the best one yet. But

Mallory Road, Boongate Tel: 01733 894894 www.marshallweb.co.uk don’t take our word for it go over yourself and have a look or book a test drive to really get the feel for it. Give Jordon and his team a ring on 01775 710650.

STAMFORD THEATRE DOING WELL It’s good to hear things are going well at the newly restored Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre in Stamford and that all the hard work seems to be paying off. They had to turn many people away from Bootleg Abba in October so the good news is they’ve rebooked them to return on Friday April 3 so get your tickets early if you missed out last time - call 01780 766455 or Sukies 01780 754829. The dressing room build is progressing nicely, and they’re hopeful to have more work finished by April, subject to funds still coming in. Then they’ll begin work on the front of the building which is a very costly area, trying to return it to its original spendour of 1859 so keep giving the team your support!

BRING A £1 TO WORK DAY ESP could be coming to your work place on February 13 as we’re backing Bring a £1 to Work Day. It’s all to raise cash for Sue Ryder Care and what was ‘Hereward FM Kids’ (now part of HEART FM). Teams from the radio station and ESP Magazine will be dropping by to collect the cash so ‘have a heart’ before Valentine’s Day and make sure you have a spare quid to chuck in the bucket! Make it more fun by holding a dress up or dress down day. Get your requests in for us to visit you by emailing Emma at thorpe.fundraising@sueryder care.org and we’ll have more details next issue.

AWARD FOR CHARTERS That well loved riverside Real Ale emporium Charters has received recognition from the Orval Brewery in Belgium. The bar, best known locally for its connections to Oakham Ales has been officially recognised as an ‘Orval Ambassador for 2009’ for being ready and willing to promote Orval Trappist beer. POSH KICK OFF NEW YEAR Peterborough United kick off a difficult January with a trip to Premier League strugglers West Bromwich Albion on Saturday January 3 as the FA Cup, sponsored by E.ON, reaches the third round stage. The clash at the Hawthorns is an attractive one for boss Darren Ferguson who believes his squad will go there full of confidence despite a disappointing 4-0 loss at League One leaders Leicester City in the final fixture before Christmas. “We know all about West Bromwich Albion having played them twice in cup competitions last season. They play good attractive football and I’m sure it will be an entertaining game. It’s a good test for us and for my players and hopefully we’ll go there and put in a good performance and give a good account of ourselves,” Ferguson told ESP. Three days after the clash with West Brom, Posh entertain Milton Keynes Dons in Coca-Cola League One action with both sides competing at the top end of the division, it’s sure to be an entertaining fixture at London Road. The big games come thick and fast in January as supporters get the chance to visit Elland Road as Posh visit Leeds United on Saturday January 24, although this game will be postponed should Posh progress in the FA Cup as this date’s set aside for the fourth round of the competition. For a full list of all the fixtures for Darren Ferguson’s men in January and for the rest of the campaign, check out www.theposh.com.

CLAIRE TAKES THE LEAP! She’s definitely got bottle! Our Face of ESP Claire Smith said she was keen to raise cash for charity and that’s exactly what she’s done by lowering herself off the side of Woolies! Claire joined local people, including Hereward FM’s breakfast presenter Kev Lawrence, in the abseil event for Kidney Research UK. Organiser Pete Revell told ESP “It was a great day and the weather could not have been better with light winds and blue sky, everyone had a great time and so far we’ve raised £11,000 for Kidney Research UK which is fantastic!” Claire bravely donned her Santa suit for what was dubbed ‘Santa’s Practice Run’ and despite a few nerves at the top she thoroughly enjoyed it. “The last time I abseiled was when I was 14 which was nearly 20 years ago and thought I'd sail through it!” said Claire. “However, when I actually got to the top, everything changed and all I can say is many apologies to all the helpers for my bad language! I heard so many heartfelt stories from other abseilers and it’s encouraged me to do the 450ft abseil in May to raise more money for Kidney Research.” Way to go girl!

ESP GIRLS LAUNCH CHARITY DANCE-A-THON IN QUEENSGATE If you’ve seen the ESP Dance Crew in action you’ll know they’ve got the moves! Now the girls are helping launch a fantastic charity Dance-a-thon ESP is supporting, organised by Sue Ryder Care. So are you more John Travolta with a touch of Saturday Night Fever or strictly better than Rachel Stevens on the dance floor? You don’t need to be able to bust some specialist moves you just need to be keen to have fun and do your bit to raise cash for Sue Ryder Care Thorpe Hall Hospice. The 12 hour event is taking place at Radius on Northminster on February 21 when they aim to have people up on the dance floor doing everything from Salsa to Hip Hop, anything just to keep moving! ESP is backing the charity’s Dance-a-thon which is one of our series of ‘Perfect Ten’ events being held throughout the year to celebrate ESP’s tenth anniversary year. The ESP Dance Crew will be there to perform and help show you some moves. You can even have a body pop with Keith Dalton, host of Lite FM’s Early Morning Wake-up who’ll be joining in on the day... we’re not sure how long he’ll last in the breakdancing though! Organiser Sara-Jane Little from Thorpe Hall told ESP – “It is great to have ESP and your wonderful dancers involved in the event and supporting me. I am really excited about the Dance-a-thon and hope that we can get a minimum of 200 participants to raise in the region of £10,000 for Sue Ryder Care, Thorpe Hall Hospice. I know it sounds like a big aim but I think that you have to aim high in order to be successful. I am confident that this event will be a success and raise loads of money for the charity. I look forward to seeing you on the dance floor!” The ESP Dance Crew will be launching the event and performing live in Queensgate shopping centre at 11am on January 10 outside John Lewis. So get in the groove with our girls and raise some cash! If you’d like to take part, or are a business interested in sponsoring part of the event please contact Sara-Jane Little on 01733 330060.

FOLLOW THE ‘STRAW’ BEAR The biggest party event in Whittlesey, the Straw Bear Festival is back on January 9, 10 and 11. Saturday’s the main day when everyone turns out to watch the poor guy dressed in straw led around the pubs on a route around the town. It wasn’t such a bad job for the ‘bear’ last year as he got up close and personal with our very own gorgeous Becca Evans when the ESP Paparazzi crew joined in the fun. We can tell you the atmosphere’s fantastic in the town and the pubs are packed so cheer yourself up once you’re back to work and put this event in your diary. The parade takes place from 10.30am – 3.30pm and the ‘bear’ is burned (minus it’s human interior – no Whicker Man shenanigans don’t fret!) at the Sir Harry Smith school fields between 12.00 and 2.30pm. There’s live music and more on the Friday and Saturday so check out www.strawbear.org.uk for more info.

SANTAS ARE ON THE RUN… WITH CLAIRE! The first ever Peterborough Santa Run was a huge success and our Face of ESP Claire Smith was in the starting line-up with 130 other nutters dressed as the famous bloke with the beard! The event raised £4,800 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices and was organised by EACH and the Norwich & Peterborough Building Society. Claire told us – “This was one of the most hilarious and coldest things I’ve done! There’s nothing funnier than watching 100 Santas participating in aerobics and running in the frost! All ages took part, even dogs with white beards and antlers. Norwich and Peterborough did a great job at organising the event and raised a considerable amount of money for EACH. I highly recommend it for all the family to be part of for next year.” Santas of all shapes, sizes, and ages, complete with beards, ran 2K around a lake at Ferry Meadows having been sent on their way by Kev Lawrence and Hereward FM. EACH and Norwich and Peterborough Building Society (N&P) teamed up to organise the Santa Run. The business/charity partnership between EACH and N&P, which began in 2007, has so far raised more than £65,000 for the charity. N&P Santa Run project leader Kerry Morley told ESP – “We’re delighted that the first-ever Santa Run for Peterborough received so much support and would like to thank everyone who braved an extremely frosty Sunday morning to help us raise thousands of pounds for EACH.” Money raised will be used to provide hospice-based services for children living with a life-threatening illness or condition. These services are expensive to provide, but always free to the families who use them. 75% of service costs have to be raised each year through fundraising – and the Peterborough Santas have definitely played their part!

JLS – The journey’s just beginning!

Photos: Rex Features

After month’s of nail biting TV, X Factor viewing parties and Peterborough people on the edge of their seat rooting for local lad Aston Merrygold it’s time to see what 2009 holds for the boy band of the future…

While everyone’s making their New Year’s Resolutions Aston and the boys from JLS are heading into a New Year like no other. They’ve already caused ‘Beatlemania’ style hysteria among young fans, have barely been out of the national media (and local!) have had a number one single with ‘Hero’ and the rest of the X Factor finalists, have appeared at the opening of the O2 arena and of course have the X Factor tour to keep them busy. With all this it seems as though actually winning wasn’t even necessary and many people are predicting a great future for the band. Toby Anstis, TV star and part of the new line-up at Peterborough radion station Heart (formerly Hereward FM) has been glued to the show and admits to being a big JLS fan. He told ESP he thought the boys might just nick it on the night – “I know Alexandra had been built up and is a fantastic talent, but it was then that moment when you think, maybe people just assume she might win and there’s a little bit of ‘she thinks she’s breezed it’ so I thought maybe JLS might just skip in there and win it.

10

www.esp3.net ( January ) w w w.

“I thought they were tremendous, I don’t think the song choices were quite right… oh God I sound like a judge now! Louis kept saying they were the best band ever and I think they were the best band they’ve had on X Factor and have the most potential. I have a slight worry about Louis, the same as Cheryl said a few weeks ago – ‘don’t let Louis turn you into another Westlife’ - because that’s not them, they’ve got a bit more cred. I mean, no disrespect to Westlife, they’ve done incredibly well, but I think JLS are a bit cooler. They need to get out there and be doing more R’N’B style, which I’m sure they will.” Toby believes Aston and the boys have a massive future ahead of them despite not winning – “I think they’ll be huge. There’s room in the market for a band like that, there’s no doubt.” Aston of course is our local hero but all the guys from the band – JB, Marvin and Oritse - have been welcomed in the city and have gone down a storm with local fans.

dontscrapthetap . c o m

Chris Brand, operations manager at the Holiday Inn, couldn’t believe his luck when the boys chose to stay at the hotel in Thorpe Wood when they came to the city just prior to the final to appear at Aston’s former school, Jack Hunt. Many people have commented on just what a nice bunch of guys they are and Chris agrees that so far fame has not turned them into arrogant pop stars. “They were really nice guys and spent time having photographs with the team and signing autographs,” he told ESP. “We had several party nights being held that evening and JLS mixed with some of the guests and were happy to have pictures taken. “They were picked up in their brand new JLS Hummer Limo the next day and that was the first time they’d seen it so they were really excited. “We were very pleased to have them here and hopefully they’ll choose to stay with us again if they return to Peterborough.” And we certainly hope they return soon. There’s no doubt Aston has come a long way since playing Cookie the Chef and singing on CITV… looks like life for this 20 year-old Peterborough lad will just never be the same again. Well done Aston – you’ve helped put the Boro on the map!

TOWN

AS HEARD ON

Did you know you can be the ‘hottest spot in town’ without even being open yet? The former Gala Bingo building on London Road seems to think it is. Naming a venue after one of the worst cars of the 1980s and sticking a palm tree on the roof doesn’t fill me with confidence. Maybe it’s going to be a club for former British Leyland car owners with acne?

CHECK OUT MY Sale NEW YEAR SALE! For

So, it’s 2009. Everyone’s going around wishing one another Happy New Year blah, blah, blah. Mine would be a lot happier if I could figure out what to do with a load of Christmas presents that are about as much use as a chocolate teapot. Why do people insist on buying presents you end up never using? It’s not that I’m ungrateful, but, I’m sorry, the thought doesn’t count. Buying the right present does! You wouldn’t buy the Pope a pack of condoms so why do I always get stuff I end up flogging for a quid an item at the Posh car boot sale?! Here’s just ten I ended up with on Christmas Day, which are going in the Free-ads - £10 the lot - just as soon as I finish writing this column. 1. A ‘handy’ car wash set with ice scraper. Firstly, the grime on my car is the only thing holding it together. Secondly, I’ll take it to my car washing friends on London Road if I ever wanted it cleaned and thirdly, I’ll take a can of de-icer over a scraper any day. 2. A garlic crusher. I already have one, my mum. 3. A pen set. My older relatives still think I write with a pen. They think a keyboard is for playing Chuckie Egg on. Pen sets are for 1980s yuppies living in the naughties. 4. Terry’s Chocolate Orange. Great. Just in case a sixcourse Christmas dinner, half a Pantone and a tub of Pringles fall a tad inside my healthy eating 1,500 calorie a day target. 5. An aftershave (some brand I’ve never heard of) gift set. Do men still use aftershave? This stuff is likely to leave my face looking like the Singing Detective. I might keep it in case I run out of petrol some time. 6. A 2009 diary. Phones and computers have diaries. In fact, this is useful, I could toss it on this year’s November 5 bonfire. 7. A letter opener. Yeah right, because my fingers are too fat to open a letter all by themselves? 8. Swimming goggles. I happened to mention, once, that I need to take up swimming for its fitness benefits. I never did. 9. A Sun Page 3 calendar. I use the calendar on my phone so this is another completely useless gift. Actually… it has other benefits I guess… 10. A silver photo frame. What for? So I can put a photo of my car in it? Photo frames are a ‘pink’ present; they’re for girls, or boys with girlfriends.

CLAIRE’S RIDING PHOBIA SORTED When I interviewed our lovely Claire Smith after she was crowned the Face of ESP, she told me she had a fear of horses that stemmed from one “nearly swallowing” her hand when she was trying to feed it a Polo or something when she was a kid. Well, with the help of Lite FM’s Early Morning Wake-up presenter, Keith Dalton and Dennis the manager of Serpentine Green shopping centre, we were able to hook Claire up ‘Jim’ll Fix It’ style with Paula Warburton at New Range Riding School in Eye Green whose mission it was to help Smithy overcome her fear. And she did. With Paula’s help, Claire actually got to ride a horse! This is great news for me and other blokes who would welcome a photo shoot with Claire in a pair of jodhpurs… Claire told me - “Paula was extremely kind and patient and made me feel completely at ease. Her and her husband are two of the most caring people I have ever met and run the most amazing centre for rescue horses. I highly recommend taking horse riding lessons and hope people will support their business so they can carry on doing such a great job." If you need to kick your phobia or just fancy straddling a saddle (for whatever reason) give Paula a call on 07787 143110 to find out more about their riding lessons. They’re a nice bunch and we’re very grateful they sorted Smithy’s horsey problem!

LUCK WAS SUPPOSED TO TEXT ME AT 7PM? Everyone’s talking about his or her New Year resolutions, which is good if you’re the disciplined kind to see them through. But some of us (mainly birds) are anxiously looking at what their stars hold for 2009. My take on horoscopes is simple; individual character references seem to be pretty much spot on (I’m a Gemini and would say my characteristics largely marry up to what Gemini’s are supposed to be) but my day-to-day readings and forecast for the year ahead are less convincing. Take today for example. Here’s an extract from Mystic Meg: “Your mind will overrule your emotions and keep you strong when you make cash decisions. Your love life will be given an international twist and a family promise is kept. Luck texts you at 7pm.” What’s really going on today is that I withdrew £550 to pay for another year’s membership for a gym I hardly use. I have no love life and my mum promised to cook cannelloni and she hasn’t. No text at 7pm but I did get one at 7.41pm from my brother saying he noticed one of my car’s rear lights wasn’t working. As for last year, I was supposed to ‘experience new heights in my job’, that’ll be why I was made redundant in June then. And I was to ‘fall in love and start a relationship in the winter’. I fell in love… with those cheese and onion slices from Baker’s Oven and we’ve been inseparable ever since. Can you imagine Mystic Meg for Prime Minister? She’d lead us into a bigger sense of false security than we’re already in! What happens to us is down to us - we shape our own destinies. It’s nothing to do with Venus visiting Scorpio or your moon in Saturn or what Justin Topper or Russell Grant preach about.

SAXONS TO GIVE ME A SESSION The Lite FM Talking Sport show with yours truly and co-presenter Phil Adlam is beginning to gather pace and popularity. Phil and I continue to get the city’s sporting personalities into the studio (every Wednesday 7-8pm) for an hour of chat and sporting banter, which is great. What isn’t so great is I seem to be getting stitched up to take part in sports challenges that quite frankly scare the s*it out of me. First I was roped into a game of ice hockey, which thankfully I bailed from due to injury and now I’ve been made to participate in a Peterborough Saxons training session. This is the city’s American football team. I’m pictured trying to look hard with Steve George and a smug Phil. The Saxons will be putting me through my paces as they warm-up for the forthcoming season. The only good thing that will come out of this is I can pre-book the paramedics to treat me. Please come to Stanground College, Peterborough Road, on Sunday January 25. Time: as soon as the session starts.

BREAKING PARK INN’S COCKTAIL CHERRY I’m not quite sure why Peterborough needed another hotel but at least I can say I was the first ever person to be served a cocktail in the Park Inn (thanks Karen for taking this snap). I was given this distinction by the bar manager during one of the hotel’s ‘test’ days before officially opening. I can’t for the life of me remember what was in it, but it was good and cost £6 – I guess I got what I paid for. Hopefully they’ll use this photo as part of a plaque to mark the first cocktail served. Celebrity endorsement is worth its weight in gold…or another one for free please…or some of that delicious maple caramel cheesecake…or a free room for the night?

NIGHT OUT ON THE CHEAP Like the rest of you I’m counting my pennies after the Christmas splurge so I might be more ‘Man About the Living Room’ than ‘Man About Town’ ‘til payday! It got me thinking about how to keep up my social diary on the cheap and avoid becoming a January recluse. It was then that I bumped into ESP’s Ian Gray who volunteered the good old Pub Quiz as a cheap night out. Ian Gray (radio presenter, DJ and quizmaster extraordinaire) assures me it’s not only cheap but a great way to enjoy the company of your mates rather than just nodding in the direction of a nice bit of fluff while the music makes your ears bleed in many city bars! Ian told me - “Most pub quizzes follow a similar format. Take the quiz nights I run locally at the Tobie Norris in Stamford (Sundays January 11 and 25) and Smiths in Bourne (Sunday January 18). The quizzes there contain varying different subject rounds, covering such as entertainment, sport, travel, news headlines, music – the list goes on. And that’s why pub quizzes are such a communal activity; get a gang of mates together of – shall we say – differing persuasions. Guys and gals, young and old, sporty types and couchpotatoes and you’ll end up with a real hotch-potch of knowledge areas – just what you need to really excel.” I pride myself on being a bit of a quiz expert but Ian proved to be my nemesis at the ESP Big Quiz earlier this year when we disagreed on a James Bond question – my specialist subject! He did sort of admit defeat but hid behind the old ‘quizmaster is always right’ excuse! To appease me he gave away this little secret to help me improve my scores… “By regularly attending, it is possible to learn the knack of ‘interpreting’ the questions. Let me explain – if a quizmaster asks for the British football team that won the European Cup in 1983, it may well be significant that he didn’t say English – so that narrows down the answer …. to Aberdeen, actually. (No more trade secrets though, apart from the advice to always have a guess, as nothing’s so sure that leaving a blank answer space will net you a big fat zero).” So, if that’s got you thinking, have a go at these questions (just for fun, but it won’t even cost you that quid) which Ian’s put together… 1.

In the TV Show “Only Fools & Horses” by what name does Trigger refer to Rodney?

2.

Who scored England’s only try in the 2003 rugby world cup final?

3.

In which TV series did Amanda Burton play the part of Dr Beth Glover?

4.

What is a Dandie Dinmont?

For someone who wanted to be a train driver, Kevin Sanders can certainly be glad he chose a different track. Peterborough’s ‘Mr Boxing’ bowed out of a 25-year career in the professional game as a boxer, trainer, manager and promoter at his own testimonial dinner last month.

5.

Who had a 1989 UK No 1 with ‘Hand on your heart’?

6.

Which is the only inanimate sign of the zodiac?

7.

Which mountain range runs through Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia?

I had the pleasure of being invited to the sell-out event where Kevin talked about his career and training all-time greats like Nigel Benn and Lloyd Honeyghan. But for me the evening was a special one after seeing some of the old Focus Amateur Boxing Club fighters, who Kevin turned professional, assembled together for the first time in years (pictured with Kevin). I remember all these boxers when I was growing up and I’ve stayed in touch on and off over the years. These guys can tell a story or two and it was good catching up with them again.

8.

Who was the first monarch to live in Buckingham palace?

9.

Susan Brown was the first woman to take part in which race?

I was saddened to hear about the death of city entertainer Greg Lawrence who passed away last month. I met Greg on several occasions over the years and always remembered him to be a genuine man with a tremendous love for life and his music. My condolences go out to his daughter Nicole and his family. Greg will never be forgotten. Thanks for making a difference Greg.

As for Kevin, a man who has done so much for boxing in the city will hopefully keep a hand in somehow. His popular dinners continue though, watch this space for his 2009 events.

PERFECT TEN … SUCCESS STORIES

Hayley Sanderson

SINGER

Hayley joined Strictly’s singing team in series five, and she specialises in jazz. She’s a big fan of Ella Fitzgerald who inspired her to become a singer. She says the worst thing about working on the show is the lack of loo breaks - and wishes they could have a portaloo next to the drums!

It’s credit to her talents that she only had a few days to learn the songs for Strictly which have to be as near the original as possible.

This month we launch a new series of profiles on ten people from the Peterborough area who’ve made us proud. Some you will recognise, some you may not even realise hail from the city. As the lights dim on another season of the hugely successful series Strictly Come Dancing, ESP chats to talented Peterborough singer Hayley Sanderson who forms part of the show’s fabulous band… The glamorous dance competition has had us all glued to the TV over the last few weeks but the fact Peterborough girl Hayley Sanderson was part of the fabulous backing band gave it a little extra hometown sparkle for us. The 25 year-old is well known by many people locally having performed often in the city, mainly at the Key Theatre where she started out in the Youth Theatre and keeps close connections with the team there. Hayley started singing at the age of seven and by twelve she was gigging around Peterborough with her uncle’s soul band and admits – “I could sing but my performances were terrible!”

Her stint at The Key followed with yearly Summer and Easter theatre workshops, several pantos and productions including the role of Maid Marion in ‘Robin Hood and the Magic Forest’ in 2006 and the title role in ‘Sweet Charity’ in 2004.

“You can have to sing anything from Queen to Michael Jackson and they expect you to sound like the record which is quite daunting if it’s a massively produced song, that’s hard to recreate with a live band.”

“I have really fond memories of my time at The Key,” she told ESP “and regularly go back and see the team. I’d definitely perform there again, I’d love to – it’s just finding the time!”

Hayley openly admits she wants to continue doing Strictly, not just because she loves it but the other benefits it brings -“The money! It’s really hard to get regular work as a musician. It’s also good to be challenged. I’m used to singing older stuff so it’s good for me to do some more modern songs too.”

Since her singing career has taken off though, a return to any theatre performances is a bit of a risk – “I do love theatre, I really miss it, but six months out of the music industry is a long time and you miss out on jobs. You have to keep your place.” Hayley now lives in London and works regularly at the city’s venues including Ronnie Scott’s, The Pigalle and The 606. “All of it’s been great,” she says “especially getting to perform with some great artists. I loved doing Ronnie Scotts – all of my influences have appeared there.” Over the last few years Hayley has worked as a backing vocalist with many different artists including Gloria Gaynor, Marti Pellow and the legendary David Hasselhoff who she describes as “a real character!” She also regularly sings with tribute band Think Floyd and is featured on the classic Pink Floyd track ‘The Great Gig in the Sky’. In 2006 Hayley was the voice of the ‘Talk Talk’ adverts on TV and radio when they used her cover of the Thunderclap Newman song ‘Something in the Air’ and now she’s appeared on the new Strictly Come Dancing album.

So, the legend that is Bruce Forsyth, what is it like to work with him? “Brucie is wonderful,” she tells us, “absolutely brilliant and great for the audience, he keeps them entertained for hours. I’m shattered by the end of the show and he’s 80 and still manages to talk to the audience at 10.30pm!” Hayley also writes and records her own music and her plans for 2009 include her hopes of releasing an original album this year.“To be able to sing my own songs that I’ve written would be fantastic – that’s when I feel most comfortable. I’m not sure on the style though, because I have so many influences and I’ve been constantly writing since I was twelve.” Whatever she comes up with, we’re sure with such a wonderful voice it will be fantastic. Hayley is definitely a ‘Perfect Ten’ with the ESP judges! www.myspace.com/hayleysanderson

... Next month we catch up with a local guy who’s broadcasting to the nation. 14

NEW YEAR… NEW RADIO STATION After nearly thirty years of Hereward Radio in Peterborough and memories of jingles like ‘I go to be with Hereward’ it’s a case of new year, new radio station in 2009 when it transforms into Heart on January 5. Since Hereward originally began broadcasting from Bridge Street (pre-Rivergate) back in July 1980 it has moved to Queensgate, undergone various takeovers, been rebranded with various logos but now we’re finally losing the name Hereward forever.

anybody that knows me will know that I am passionate about this city and that isn’t going to change, it’s just going to get even bigger.” His co-host Abby Surgeon is equally as excited about the changeover - “It’s such an encouraging move for us the fact that we’re bringing such a huge brand here but we’re still having that local element to it. It’ll be more of the same, more of the fun, more of the waking you up and getting you into the swing of your day.”

Toby hit the jungle in ITV1’s ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!’ He confessed to ESP that he was once a ‘toy boy’ of an older Peterborough lady years ago who he met on a university ski-trip! “I never got up to see her because I didn’t have a car so she’d always drive down in her sports car to see me” he laughed. “So that was my first link to Peterborough! “I’m really looking forward to broadcasting to the city though, I love it already! It took me ages to walk

It’s part of a multi-million pound rebrand which we’re told will see ongoing investment by its new owners, Global Radio, and will see star names like Toby Anstis join the line-up while some of the existing favourites remain, including Kev and Abby on breakfast. For the many city people who’ve grown up with the station there’s bound to be a little sadness that Hereward is going. Kev Lawrence has seen the station go through many changes and has to admit it’ll be strange to lose the name. “Yep, I’m a little bit sad,” he told ESP, “but it’s all about focussing on the future and how exciting the future is. The whole Heart brand is fantastic to be involved with and despite the tinges of sadness people have got to move on and move forward.” Kev has always banged the Peterborough drum and says any fears it’ll lose its local touch are unfounded.

So while Kev and Abby continue to get you out of bed in the mornings Toby Anstis will then be networked from 10am-1pm and Peterborough lad Lee Warren, who’s been fronting the daytime slot, moves to the Drivetime show to get you home with all the news and travel. Programme Controller Chris Suckling believes it is good news which will ensure the station’s survival in the city.

“It’ll be a totally Peterborough focussed breakfast show and all the great things this city has to offer will continue to be on our show. I wouldn’t be interested in doing a show that wasn’t local and

16

through Queensgate to the radio station because I kept stopping at all the great shops! People have told me the Peterborough Museum is worth a visit - I hear it’s haunted so I’ll make sure Kev and Abs come along with me. As I’m a massive footie fan, I’m looking forward to catching a game or two at London Road in the New Year. And when the sun comes out in the summer, I’ll be heading down to the East of England Show.” So with promises of more music, the Heart Angels out an about treating listeners, fun programming and a lively style, Toby’s confident Heart will soon win everyone over.

“The problem is we work in a commercial environment where it’s harder and harder to make money and this new brand has a lot of strength. What we’re going to do is take the best bits of Hereward and move them forward to be the best bits of Heart. It is very much just a name change for a lot of commercial reasons that make sense for us, but it’s still the local radio station people know and love.”

“Being passionate for Peterborough, the local area and our local audience is at the core of what Heart is. Heart is all about having fun and living life to the full and all day long, we’ll be playing the best variety of music you love!”

Toby Anstis first made his name on television hosting BBC TV’s ‘The Ozone’ and more recently in 2006,

Heart will be available on 102.7 FM as well as on DAB digital radio and online at www.heart.co.uk

DON’T RISK GETTING A COWBOY… • Cowboy tradesmen cost the UK population nearly a billion a year in botched jobs • The office of fair trading estimate there are over 9 million disputes between home owners and tradesmen every year, a staggering 25,000 every day • 7 out of 10 homeowners are unhappy with the level of service they receive from tradesmen • 85% of us worry about the quality of work prior to commissioning a tradesmen We can now avoid being another statistic thanks to trustourtrades.com, our own local vetted tradesmen website, created to service the PE Postcode District. When looking for a reputable tradesman, research has shown that 98% of the population within the UK rely on personal recommendations. Choosing a tradesman from a directory is often a lottery as you never know who you are going to get. With trustourtrades.com you will have complete peace of mind as all our members are highly recommended (read their authenticated recommendations on the website!) CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) checked, vetted and approved and have agreed to comply with our Service Charter. They will also be accountable for their work as customers can rate them and leave feedback on the website for other consumers to see. trustourtrades.com is all about bringing “word of mouth” recommendations into the 21st century using modern technology and the internet. During the extensive local research carried out by trustourtrades.com over the past 2 years, they learnt that there are quite a substantial number of local tradesmen that consumers would NEVER recommend to anyone, with the majority of people having either had a bad experience with a cowboy tradesman or knowing someone else who has. There are 100’s of honest, reliable tradesmen across the PE postcode district, who are proud of their work and always deliver an excellent service and trustourtrades.com have made it their mission to find them on our behalf; this will restore our faith that not all are bad and will redeem any tarnished reputation that our local tradesmen have been branded with, due to unscrupulous cowboys. Their goal is to establish the trustourtrades.com logo as a symbol of Quality & Trust within our local communities. This in turn will give homeowners and businesses a much-needed convenient one-stop-shop of reputable tradesmen to rely on. The service covers the entire PE Postcode District which is divided into 4 geographical sectors. Membership places are LIMITED so their message to tradesmen is “if you are proud of your work and want to prove your credibility, then get a step ahead of your competitors by registering your interest on the website NOW otherwise you will get left behind.” I know where my first port of call is now when I need a trustworthy tradesman…make it yours too. Look out for tradesmen who display the Approved Member logo

FIT FOR NOTH ING

As most people embar k on their New Year fitness regime, it seems that the top celebrity fitness DVD of 2009 is set to be Claire from Steps’ ‘5 Step Fat Atta ck’ created after she lost an amazing 51/2 sto ne for her wedding earlier this year. Also do nning dodgy lycra to peddle their fitness wa res and show us how to do it are Colleen No lan (Loose skin Women?), Letitia Dean (Lean Vic?) and Denise Van Outen (Ho w to solve a problem like my rear?). But one celebrity DVD I won’t be buying this year is Natalie Cassidy’s (Eastenders Sonia), not unless it comes with auto rewind – to fast trac k back to before she piled it all back on aga in.

WELCOME TO THIS EXCITING NEW COLUMN ABOUT THE DELIGHTS OF MY HOMETOWN STAMFORD! Being a local boy in this quirky little town all my life, it’s going to be a lot of fun to write about and review some of the nights out I have here and some of the places and people I know. Some of you may have seen me playing some gigs around the local area (or maybe on an old hat TV programme called ‘Top of The Pops’ that sadly no longer exists!) I’ve toured many great parts of the world, yet still I’m drawn back to this great little town. I’ll be writing about lots of different things around and about the town, like new pubs and restaurants opening, nominating my ‘pub of the month’ and any other things I find that are of interest happening in the Stamford area. Every month I’ll be telling you about some of my favourite places, some of which you might know well, some not so well. So if you’re a landlord, restaurant owner or just someone who has some Stamford gossip or something you’d like to promote in the town - come see me!

BACK TO SQUARE ONE A hot new opening for the New Year I’m sure is going to be the former Mi Familia bar in town which is set to have a new name and new owner. My old mate Tim tells me he’s taken over the place and is looking at revamping it for the New Year. It’s going to be called Square One and will be having live music and guest DJ’s, plus offering a range of different food in the near future. The official opening night hasn’t yet been set, but Tim told me the venue would be open all over Xmas, before he does a refurbishment in the New Year. Good luck Tim and watch this space for more news on that in the future!

GOOCH’S LOOK AFTER US VEGGIES… AND THE REST Life for me isn’t just nightclubs and big gigs, for some great food any time of the day I like to pop down to Gooch’s Café on Castle Street in Stamford. I’ve been going in there for quite a few years now and Mary and Charlotte certainly know

Matt Zilch how to whip up a great fry up after a night on the town, along with any other lovely meal you like! From English breakfast, Paninni’s, Lasagne, a whole range of jacket spuds, baguettes and sandwiches, Gooch’s has it all. Being a Vegetarian (not a snooty one of course!) I’m a bit of a fussy eater and I’m always quite limited on what I can eat from a menu when I’m out and about. But the girls at Gooch’s never fail to please and have always adapted any meal on the menu. So next time you’re in Stamford and are wondering where to eat in the day, pop into Gooch’s and enjoy one of the wide range of meals they have on their menu. I promise you, you won’t be disappointed.

PROBABLY… THE BEST CLOTHES IN THE WORLD AT C3 Last but not least I’d like to give a big thanks to my sponsor for making this column possible! My great pal and style guru Rob Pinto at C3 in Stamford will be filling me in on any new and exciting fashions and clothes he’s getting in his shop over the forthcoming year. If you haven’t paid a visit to the shop on Ironmonger Street then you’re really missing out! Get down there for the January sales and I’m sure you’ll find not only great deals on clothes, but the best clothes in the town… the country… the world!

ONLY FALLS AND HORSES Believe it or not, this month is the 20th anniversary of one of the most iconic moments in British comedy - Del Boy falling through the bar in Only Fools and Horses. Way back in the day (Sunday Jan 8, 1989 at 7.15pm to be exact) the episode that it was featured in (Yuppy Love) was first broadcast on BBC1 and the sight of Trotter’s most independent trader falling arm over elbow entered the nation’s comedy pysche... helped obviously by being repeated 'millyons and millyons' of times over the years. It therefore seems appropriate to begin 2009 by raising a Pina Colada and toasting Del Boy's fool fuelled prat-fall. Please feel free to have a drink to it yourselves if you're in the pub reading this. (For those of you who’ve given up drinking for New Year and are sitting at home wondering why the 2.5% VAT reduction hasn't made you a billionaire why not treat yourselves to a glass of Peckham Spring, AKA tap water. I heard that this year’s is a particularly good vintage.) As well as having one of TV's most memorable

moments 'Yuppy Love' was also the episode that broke one of the fundamental rules of all sitcoms, namely that they all have to be 30 minutes long. 'Fools' was the first sitcom to get a series of six episodes at 50 minutes. By increasing the show’s running time by 40% it allowed writer John Sullivan to develop the main characters, bring out the best in the supporting cast and give us six superb episodes packed with comedy, pathos, tragedy, embarrassment and delight. In short 42 carat comedy gold. Up until that episode began the sixth series in 1989 every sitcom made adhered rigidly to the half hour format for an episode (with the exception of Christmas specials). Think of all the 'classic' sitcoms that get mentioned in the same breath as 'Only Fools'. ‘Steptoe and Son’, and ‘The Likely Lads’ in the 60s, ‘Dads Army’ and ‘Fawlty Towers’ in the 70s. ‘Black Adder’ and ‘The Young Ones’ in the 80s, ‘Ab Fab’ and ‘Men Behaving Badly’ in the 90s. Even now all the major TV sitcoms of the last 10 years still follow the same format - 'Vicar of Dibley', 'My Family', 'The Royle Family', 'The Office',

'Extras', ‘Peep Show’, ‘Gavin & Stacey’ - all 30 minutes over six episodes. In the current climate of supposedly 'offensive' comedy on TV, it's also worth pointing out that when the episode with the blow-up dolls was broadcast (a week after ‘Yuppy Love’) there were so many complaints about it that both David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst were forced to go on TV to defend the show and that particular episode. It seems laughable now that a sitcom that's considered to be a mainstream, formulaic, family friendly sitcom could attract such complaints, but thankfully the BBC didn't feel the need to ban it just because a minority of licence payers complained. Given how successful 'OFAH' became when it changed to 50 minute episodes for the last two series it seems odd that no other sitcom has tried it since - but again that just adds to the 'Only Fools' legacy. A sitcom so magnificent that not only did it need two theme songs - but it also needed longer episodes than any other. God bless Hooky Street.

JOKESOFTHEMONTH "Christmas and New Year are separated by the six strangest days in the whole year. Nobody has a clue who they are, all rules have been suspended and nobody knows what's going on. 'Is there post today? Is the post coming today? What day is it? Do you know what day it is? I don't even know what day it is. Is it time for a turkey sandwich? When do the bins get taken away? Shall I start my diet? Are the shops open? Have the sales started? Can I park here? Can I park here today? Was that the post? I think I just heard the post. I want another turkey sandwich... what time is Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on?' If someone said to you in June 'Do you want to watch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?' you'd be like 'NO of course not!' But at this time of year you have to watch it." - Michael McIntyre. "I've done the Royal Variety show twice now and both times Prince Charles was there. Now to me, that's not variety. Somebody should tell him... he doesn't have to keep watching me just because I'm Iranian... that’s what he pays Mi6 for." - Omid Djalli

BARACK TO THE FUTURE After eight years of George W Bush's gaffe strewn speeches, I'm looking forward to Barack Obama taking over as the American President. Keep an eye out on the opening ceremony when he gets sworn in - Bush has to give a leaving speech and I can't help thinking that it'll be like in the film ‘Face Off’ with John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. I'm expecting Bush to peel off his rubbery face to reveal that he wasn't really 'George W Bush' at all but someone completely different actor Chevy Chase. Think about it... when was the last time you saw Chevy Chase in a film at the cinema? Exactly. It was around the same time Bush became president. That's what I bet Chevy's been up to all these years getting into character for a new film - ‘National Lampoon's Presidential Vacation’. The script practically writes itself.

WOLFIE WINS WINMAU WORLD MASTERS Finally, I'd like you all to give a massive 'wolf howl' and join me in congratulating local darts hero Martin 'Wolfie' Adams from Deeping St James who last month won the Winmau World Masters in Yorkshire for the very first time. The final was shown live on BBC2 and Wolfie triumphed 7-6 in a thrilling final against Scott Waites which ranks as one of the most exciting finals I've ever seen - but don't just take my word for it. Voice of darts Tony 'It's a bullseye' Green rated it as the BEST final he'd ever commentated on and at the end remarked - "You would not see more happy faces if Santa arrived here with his reindeer in the next five minutes. This is pure theatre!" Look out for Wolfie in action again when the BBC begins coverage of the 2009 World Championships from Lakeside between January 3-11.

STAMFORD COMEDY CLUB RETURNS It’ll be a while before the comedy circuit kicks in with fresh gigs for 2009, but stand-up fans should drop this one in their diaries… you’re bound to have been given one for Chrimbo! Stamford Comedy Club ‘Ship of Fools’ returns on February 20 at Stamford Arts Centre so head along for a laugh with three rising stars of the comedy circuit! Chris Neill’s an acidic storyteller and Radio 4 regular whose credits include ‘Just a Minute’, ‘Quote… Unquote’, and many others who’s described by The Scotsman as – ‘The epitome of intelligent, Middle Class camp. Close your eyes and you get Julian Clary crossed with Kenneth Williams. Open them and you have Sergeant Bilko.’ Then there’s Mike Belgrave with some great observational comedy and Gary Colman who was described as – ‘hilariously funny ‘ by The London Paper plus resident compere Alan Seaman. Tickets are £10 (£8 concessions).

The trouble with teens… Karen’s back on the box, and this time she’s helping out a bunch of teenagers with some seriously bad eating habits. Have times changed that much? When you look at – The binge drinking The drug culture The increase in food additives, flavourings and the use of chemicals in the environment The use of mobile phones (radiation exposure) The striving for ‘A’ Grades The size ‘zero’ The fast food industry…. I’d say yes, times have changed, and today’s teens have a lot more to contend with than we did, there seems much more pressure on them than we ever had. Sneaking those couple of Campari and sodas from time to time looks a bit limp compared to the hard hitting alcohol abuse we see now. There’s more information on healthy living than ever before, yet a good percentage of our teenagers still opt for the least healthy. Studies now show that some of the long term health issues that could arise from this will be in the increase in mental health problems such as depression and dementia particularly if the high intake of alcohol continues. Other common foods that can rob the body long term are –

10 years-old the nutritional needs of boys/girls are very similar, and for most of us we get fed what we are given from parents, but once we hit puberty demands from the body differ. The extra bit of freedom teenagers can have can often allow them to choose their own foods. The teenage growth years demand a lot of nutrients (which a lot of them don’t get) such as IRON ZINC ESSENTIAL FATS CALCIUM VITAMIN D… and more The problem is, when eating a diet high in addictive foods the good nutrients are used up in metabolising them so they’re depleted from the body, then you get into the ‘more you have, the more you want them’ type of cycle. A new series that I had the privilege to work on called ‘Teen Spa’ shows five typical, modern day teenagers who had a variety of health challenges ranging from acne to addictions (and more). They represent so many of today’s teenagers who are trying to ‘fit’ into a society which is so much more image conscious than ever before. The programme highlights the challenges that they have but more importantly shows that even the smallest changes can make big differences to their long term health.

Fizzy drinks High caffeine energy drinks High intake of sugar Karen, Amanda Hamilton and the group from TV’s ‘Teen Spa’

It’s been said that the health of our British Teenagers (16-19 year-olds) is cause for major concern compared to other parts of the world as they drink too much alcohol, experiment with drugs and fail to eat a good, healthy, balanced diet just when their body needs it most. We were all young once and all of us

went through those turbulent teenage years which can be really hard to handle and I’m sure many of us would not want to be a teenager again (mind you a few of us still act like one!) We don’t think about the long term health issues when we’re young, after all, as a teenager we know everything don’t we?!

High alcohol intake (really affects brain cells!) High salt intake The trouble is, eating these foods on a regular basis causes a numbing of the taste buds and also triggers the craving for more of them. So when it comes to the healthier options they tend to get pushed aside as the cravings get fed. Nutritionally before the age of around

STATS Age: 34 Was size 20, now size 10-12 Highest weight recorded 15st 8lbs March 2008 Weight now 10st 8lbs “Following the birth of my children I deluded myself that breastfeeding would prevent weight gain but 4 ½ stone later I’d proven that theory wholly incorrect. I lacked confidence and couldn’t recognise the person that looked back at me in the mirror every day. “Having attempted every diet I could unearth, I went to my doctor who mentioned LighterLife. The regime suited my lifestyle; every shake, soup or bar slotted into my day effortlessly while I ran around after the children. Knowing that portions or food choices couldn’t be blamed for any weight gain I found sticking to the diet easy. “I initially thought that the shakes were the key but it was actually the group sessions that helped me uncover the reasons for my over-eating. I was able to identify trigger foods, such as Thai noodles and chocolate, but most importantly to stop myself when I rationalised my snacking habits with - ‘I’ll start the diet again tomorrow’, ‘one day won’t hurt’, ‘I deserve a treat’ – sounding familiar? “Now having returned to my pre-baby weight I eat pretty much whatever I like (including noodles and chocolate), I’ve just learnt to listen to my body and plan ahead when I go out for meals. LighterLife has changed my future, I can’t recommend the programme highly enough. Thanks Julie.”

We have so many fantastic pictures of you all out having a great time we can’t always get them all in, so this month we’re featuring a few more images from our travels and looking back over the year. a h s e l A Dixon From Mis-teeq lady to self-assured woman, ESP’s Joanne Quinney says singer Alesha Dixon can’t put a foot wrong! The boy does nothing, but this girl certainly does something… You would’ve had to be living in a cave recently to have avoided gorgeous Alesha Dixon. This smart and sassy just turned 30 year-old has the world at her feet right now. After nine hit singles and two albums with girl band Mis-teeq in the early 2000s, Alesha didn’t want to rush into a solo project. Having battled a very public split from husband MC Harvey from So Solid Crew, it was no wonder she wanted to take a breather for a while. Then Strictly Come Dancing came along and the rest as they say is history. Having appeared in N.E.R.D’s biggest hit to date, ‘She Wants to Move’ and just signing a solo record deal, something wasn’t quite right, as Alesha says - “It was a bit too predictable. It was all a bit ‘girl leaves girl band, girl gets a solo deal’ and there wasn’t really much of a narrative to it.” Alesha had been asked to write songs for Girls Aloud and maybe herself. “By then I had lost my deal and I was going through a lot of personal crap.” Here the offer to dance on Strictly Come Dancing came along. Alesha was hesitant at first - “I nearly said no to Strictly because I was worried about what people would think. I ended up saying yes because I genuinely wanted to learn how to dance – it was a hugely self affirming experience.” Alesha took the 2007 series by storm and was favourite to win after the third week. The experience was to steer her on a fresh course - “For the first time in my life I didn’t care what was going to happen next,” she says, “I was so caught up in the moment. Before Strictly there had been moments before when I felt a bit lost but it structured my life again and gave me focus.” Miss Dixon is now signed to Asylum Records and has burst back on the music scene with the infectious hit ‘The Boy Does Nothing.’ Alesha describes the track as “bottled happiness” and says “I adore the line ‘if the man can’t dance, he gets no second chance.’ I’d love to be impressed by somebody’s dance skills.” The song is super sassy and uplifting. Perhaps not what people were expecting - “I think some people thought I might come back with a

32

www.esp3.net ( January ) w w w.

song that was moodier,” she says “but that’s just not me.” This introduces her brand new album The Alesha Show. The album effortlessly dips into a plethora of music styles, including 60’s and R’n’B to perfect Pop, right through to a classic ballad. Each track shows off her versatile voice, in some cases with soaring emotion and with others inyour-face Pop moments. The next track to be released is ‘Breathe Slow’ which Alesha describes as being about “those moments in life when you want to kill someone but you don’t because shooting a gun would empower someone else, so instead you empower yourself by staying cool.” So this is Alesha Dixon right now – hailed as the nation’s sweetheart and quickly becoming a household name, she wows crowds every time she performs as she puts all her energy into delivering high octane performances and her album is bursting with hits. Alesha says, “I don’t think I could have written this album five years ago. There is definitely something about having experiences – good and bad – in life that makes your emotions stronger and you really find who you are.” This couldn’t be more true when listening to her album. “In Mis-teeq I used to say that writing lyrics were like writing a diary, but now I realise that only as a solo artist can you write something truly personal. I’ve tried to be honest about things that have happened in my life.” An artist at the top of her game, ladies and gentlemen please take your seats, the curtain is about to come up on The Alesha Show…

Alesha’s new single ‘Breathe Slow’ is released on February 9. www.aleshadixon.co.uk

Confessions... Susan Saunders

susan.saunders@espmag.co.uk

New Year, New…..? Let’s face it, once Christmas is done and dusted and the thought of New Year fast approaches (like a ticking time bomb), many thoughts spring to mind. Thoughts like - next year I’m going to do this (be a superstar) and do that (take over the world), just the usual really. Although instead of looking forward to 2009, I decided that I ought to take a look back before I move forward – speculate to accumulate. As I took a walk down memory lane, looking through old pictures, I stumbled across a few that really did follow the ‘pictures say a thousand words’ rule. The first picture was when I was about 13 and the whole ‘hair scraped back into a tight ponytail with two strands of hair at the front’ was obviously all the rage then. Lesson - ‘the importance of avoiding bad hair’ learnt – well most of the time! The next was of me in a mismatched outfit – a metallic silver Adidas bomber jacket (nice), bootleg jeans and Reebok trainers (argghhhhh!). Lesson in ‘the importance of avoiding wardrobe malfunctions’ sorted (almost – this is an on-going project don’t you know). Now – having reviewed my photo album I noticed that, apart from the fact that I appear to be goofing around in every single one, there was no Mr Right – I mean, what does he actually look like? This was something that I thought I might look forward to in 2009. In the meantime however I thought I’d take a little look back at Mr Wrongs so as not to stumble across them in the future! We’ll begin the Susan school of sum entitled ‘New Year, New You’. Girls, below are the traits to look out for in 2009. The individual, for the purpose of this exercise, we’ll call ‘Dave’. Mr Wrong (Dave) numero 1 – ‘I don’t like to hold hands in public or any public displays of affection’…this to me translates as Dave wanting all and sundry to see that he’s just your mate. If there was ever a time that you needed to hug him he’d glue his arms by his side, whilst remaining rooted to the spot. Probably not the most affectionate guy in public, but don’t mistake this for him being ashamed of you (the big head, doesn’t he realise that he’s not that great himself?!) though if he’s also like this in private, you definitely have a problem! Escape pronto by Fire Exit number one, stage left. Mr Wrong numero 2 – Dave does not want to be seen in any pictures with you on Facebook, nor does he get into any conversation with you on your public forum…otherwise known as ‘The Wall’. This, my friends could be a classic example of the behavioural habits of a shy guy, however Dave is not a shy guy – he’s as brass as anything. This therefore translates as: there are others who he doesn’t want to see that your association goes beyond mutual friends... Escape through Fire Exit, stage right. Mr Wrong numero 3 – You know his name, Dave, and use it frequently, however the continuous use of the name ‘babe’ is more than you can bear. Who is this girl babe? Hmmmmm. Now, not too sure I’m the biggest fan of this. Although an ex once called me by the name of his ex so on reflection, babe would have been A LOT more acceptable. Finally (there are many more but that’s a story for another day) unless you misheard Dave when he told you about his job, the last you remembered he

34

www.esp3.net ( January ) w w w.

dontscrapthetap . c o m

wasn’t a phone salesman. Why oh why then, does he have more than one phone? Dave might try to tell you that he wants to be accessible to you at all times, so if you can’t get through on one number, you can definitely get him on one of his others. Perhaps not. So in 2009, instead of trying to morph into a different person to achieve what I want, I’m going to do much of the same as this year - a bit of partying, much laughter with my friends, enjoying good health, hard work and happiness. I will take the lessons that I’ve acquired and not be taken away from my partying ways, until I meet Prince Charming (even then I won’t be returning to my previous hermit ways – that was with Dave number 1). Until then, long may this continue. Now, let me offer some advice from one friend to another, if you didn’t have someone to kiss at midnight on December 31 2008, don’t despair – you can make up for it in 2009.

Happy New Year!

LITE CELEBRATES TEN YEARS It’s not just ESP that’s celebrating ten years, local radio station Lite FM is set to party this year as well. The team at Lite – including original voices Keith Dalton and Simon Potter – have all kinds of fun and games planned for their anniversary year, leading up to their official birthday in July. City Councillor Wayne Fitzgerald was the first voice on the station that launched on 106.8FM back on Saturday July 24 1999. The first song played was ‘So Good’ by Boyzone, and the first live presenter was Andy Grahamme. ESP’s very own editor Sharon McAllister was part of the original news team! Programme Controller Gregg Nunney joined the team in 2005 and currently hosts ‘Talking Peterborough’, weekdays from 10am. Gregg told

ESP - “Lite FM won the licence in Peterborough promising to offer listeners an alternative local station, we’re really proud that 10 years on we still offer that alternative. In today’s market it’s even more significant that our total focus at Lite is to broadcast great radio from Peterborough, to Peterborough, about Peterborough – that’s what local means to us. “We’ve made significant changes over the past year whilst not losing our heritage. Keith is still fronting as a mainstream presenter and has acted as an anchor to the new boys on the block. ‘Talking Peterborough’, Gary Ball at Drive along with Mikey Clarke and ‘Talking Sport with Two Posh Geezers’ (Phil Adlam from Posh and your own Pep Cipriano) are now firm favourites across the day.”

SUSAN SINGS LIVE ON LITE FM

You can hear ESP’s lovely former Face of ESP Kerry Bates talking movies and columnist Susan Saunders talking music with Gregg each week plus Pep Cipriano, our Man About Town sits in with Keith on the Early Morning Wake-up on Wednesday mornings. Station Director Carolyn Hayward added “Peterborough’s grown during the past 10 years and has plans to develop even further. At Lite we’re proud to be part of the local community and work hard to support local people and local business to help make Peterborough a vibrant city.” Stay tuned to 106.8FM for updates on what Lite will be doing to celebrate ten years in Peterborough during 2009 and we’ll bring you more news in ESP.

You can hear ESP columnist and former Face of ESP Susan Saunders on Lite FM every Wednesday at 12.15am but she’s normally talking music, not performing it! Susan’s been singing for years, she appeared on X Factor with local girl band Blush, but has now gone solo and recently performed two tracks on the radio station. It followed a live performance in front of crowds at the Christmas lights ceremony in Kettering with Ray Quinn and Brian Capon. Gregg Nunney at Lite FM saw her there and asked her to sing on air. “I, of course said yes straight away and set about finding a guitarist to accompany me,” said Susan. “Luckily, ESP found me Matty Zilch who is a new columnist for the mag, but also a very well versed musician, some of his accolades include

playing on Top of The Pops and T4 Party on The Beach! “I’ve been in a girl band of some description over the last seven years (wow that does make me feel old!), the first of which (The Pussykatz) played some great venues and performed at various ‘Party In The Park’ style events with the likes of Simon Webb, Girls Aloud and Busted and the last of which (Blush) reached the last twelve bands at 2007's X Factor in the boot camp stages. This year, I'm going to put my absolute all into my singing, however this time as a soloist in the hope of making it big and being successful.” So, we could be hearing even more from our bubbly former Face of ESP girl this year! Susan has a new manager who’s right behind her and we’ll keep you posted on her progress.

The Dodge Journey has proved a real talking point so we took it on a journey around some Peterborough businesses to see what they had to say about this new beast. DVD RELEASES PINEAPPLE EXPRESS MAKE IT HAPPEN YOU DON’T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN (OUT JANUARY 19) A hilarious comedy about a Mossad Agent (Sandler) who fakes his own death in order to pursue his dream... to become a hairstylist in New York! You know what you’re getting with an Adam Sandler movie… cheesy, random fun! But be warned, this is extremely random even for Sandler. Rating #####

(OUT JANUARY 29)

Lazy stoner Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) has only one reason to visit his equally lazy dealer Saul Silver (James Franco): to purchase weed, specifically, a rare new strain called Pineapple Express. But when Dale becomes the only witness to a murder by a crooked cop (Rosie Perez) and the city's most dangerous drug lord (Gary Cole), he panics and dumps his roach of Pineapple Express at the scene. But the weed is so rare that it can be traced back to Saul. Dale and Saul have to run for their lives as the bad guys are hot on their trail!

Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as Lauryn, a young girl who embarks on a life changing journey to Chicago in order to chase her dream to become a dancer. When her plans veer off track, she finds herself discovering a whole new style of dance, working at a Burlesque club. Filled with fantastic dance routines, ‘Make it Happen’ details Lauryn's voyage of discovery, as she uncovers a whole new side of her self, while still holding on to her dreams.

Baring in mind the actors and creators of this film, I was expecting more comedy to be honest, but it’s still a good watch. Rating #####

FILMS TO LOOK OUT FOR IN 2009… 2008 was something of a vintage year for us movie fans. But is there a 2009 film that can equal the colossal success of The Dark Knight? Which hot franchises will step up to fill the spaces left by Batman, Bond and Indy? These are my predictions for the top five films of the year:

5: THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS (RELEASE DATE TBC) This is a film where anything could happen, much like other films directed by Terry Gilliam. One main subject people will be talking about is the fact that this is the final performance of

Heath Ledger. Because Ledger did not survive to complete the movie, Gilliam has enlisted Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law to share the lead role... adding an extra surreal twist to the Faustian fantasy.

4: TERMINATOR SALVATION (JUNE) This had better be good as it’s the war that’s mentioned in all three previous movies… now that is bigging something up! Christian Bale, fresh from his spectacular triumph as one hero in Dark Knight he brings to life another - John Connor, charismatic leader of the antiSkynet forces who the Terminators have been trying

to eliminate for the last three films. In an interview Bale said he agreed to make this film because the script was fresh and original, much like the recent Batman movie.

3: STAR TREK (MAY) It’s been said that 30 percent of people who like Star Trek, pretend they don’t. This is one movie however that people should be proud to say they’ve watched. This film is set right before the TV series. Winona Ryder looks set for a return to the big leagues as Amanda Grayson – Spock’s mum. British geek God Simon Pegg turns up as

Scotty, and Zachary Quinto the dark presence at the heart of TV’s ‘Heroes’ certainly looks the part as a young Spock. Expect tricksy time travel shenanigans, freak transporter accidents and… a lot of hardcore fans getting out their costumes.

2: BRUNO (MAY) Do you remember watching the Borat movie and saying things like ‘can he really say that?’, and ‘surely he can’t do that?’ but at the same time, finding it all hilarious. We can expect just as much controversy with Sacha Baron Cohen’s Bruno. Bruno is a gay, Austrian TV reporter who worms his way

into style hot-spots and has already made headlines for doing the most inappropriate things in the most inappropriate places.

1: HARRY POTTER AND THE HALFBLOOD PRINCE (JULY) Harry Potter fans will already have a fairly good idea of what happens in this, the sixth film in the hugely popular boy wizard film adapted from JK Rowling’s all-conquering books. It was an early script draft of this film that prompted Rowling to ‘out’ Dumbledore while promoting the final Potter book.

LIVEMUSIC

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It’s been another great year on the local music scene! While the charts continue to provide us with a never ending supply of manufactured and over-produced crap… real musicians, real bands and real artists from Peterborough and the surrounding areas continue to create great music and put on great performances. The local live music scene is healthier than ever. While we continue to lose the occasional venue, many others are being taken over and are putting on live music nights. So, big thanks to all those landlords and landladies out there for another great year and here’s to a fantastically live 2009!

Hawkins (the Pigeon Detectives’ sound engineer) and have been signed to complete an album at Peterborough Technical College.

JLS Big, big congratulations to Aston and the rest of the JLS boys for making it to the final of X-Factor. Despite murdering the classic ‘Hallelujah’ in the final sing-off, they deserve every success and this showed no more clearly than in the humble manner in which they accepted defeat and shared Alexandra’s moment with the rest of the series’ contestants. I’m certain we won’t see the last of JLS and, with the right songs; they are surely going to be huge! Well done lads.

CAME BY PLANE STILL AIMING HIGH Local girls Came by Plane are still attracting attention. The band recently appeared on Channel 4’s Orange unsigned competition and made it to the last 50 from 7,500 bands – not bad going eh? They’ve been asked back next year when they’ll have 12 months progression under their belts after getting positive responses from the judges. Following on from this the band were entered as a wild card (due to the high number of votes received) into the final eight bands of Intel Studio.com unsigned acts competition from which they now have interest from Roger Morton, Black Book Management (manager of Razorlight). They’ve also been booked to play The Purple Turtle in Camden on February 1 where record producers are coming back to view them again. Locally Came By Plane won the Battle of the Bands competition back in December at Radius which has won them studio time in Leeds with Andy

MESH-29 It’s been an exceptionally busy year for the Mesh-29 crew. During the recording of their 2nd album ‘Secret Traffic’ in London’s Strongroom Studios, they met the artist who designed Keane’s ‘Hopes & Fears’ album who offered to do the artwork for their album too. After touring the album across the UK and Ireland, they then did more than 30 live gigs in people’s front rooms, as part of the album promotion. Their new single ‘Wide Awake’ (no Timmy Mallet jokes) is being released at the end of January and they’re being widely acclaimed by the likes of Janice Long and Kerrang magazine.

BARNACK ACOUSTIC SESSIONS The Millstone Inn at Barnack, near Stamford, provides the venue for the start of the 2009 series of the Barnack Acoustic Sessions on Tuesday January 6 and on the first Tuesday of each month thereafter. With a featured artist each month, you can enjoy a totally unplugged evening in cosy candlelight. Each session is also open to anyone who wants to sing a song, play a tune or share a poem or reading. Any type of music is welcome, so long as it’s unplugged. For more information, contact Richard Groom on 01733 891860.

Los Angeles especially to install the piece. The artwork, entitled ‘Hope’, was produced by Obey originator, Shepard Fairey, and was adopted by the Obama campaign as part of his charge to a very convincing victory in November. The artwork’s also been shown all around the world by global broadcasters and newspapers, and has quickly gained iconic status comparable with other famous images, such as the Che Guevara poster image. So, suddenly a new music venue in Lincolnshire is the focus of much of the UK's arts community glare, with interest from far and wide. Venue promoter, Michael Houlihan told ESP ''We are delighted to have the artwork here, as it ties in perfectly with what we are trying to achieve as a venue.”

COLUMN Andy Slater andy.slater@espmag.co.uk

We’ve said farewell to some big names in local music recently so this month Andy celebrates the lives of a couple of real local stars… glorious years of Jazz , Folk , Rock, Pop and masses of fun. I can’t quite remember his ‘time gentleman please’ but it went along the lines of “thank you for your time and your money now bugger off” - classic Pete Carter. After fifty-odd years of music-fuelled laughter, a life which Rex describes as ‘moonlighting, fags, drink and strippers’, Pete was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and his speech was affected by a stroke. His wife Joan noted something in him even in the last difficult years of his life. “He loved every minute of his life, right to the end he loved life, it’s important that people know that.” A fitting tribute to a man dearly loved by his wife and daughter Sarah, and by a city that he called home for 73 years.

Pete Carter

I first came across Pete Carter in around 1978 when I was a spotty faced underage barman at The George Hotel in Whittlesey. He was playing in a duo called the Double D’s and instantly the guy made me laugh. Sat perched on a stool, fag in one hand and possibly a Gibson in the other, he lambasted everyone from his singing mate, the audience and the staff with such humour that the place was in uproar. However, when the pair struck up I realised that this was one hell of a musician. This is how I will remember Pete who sadly passed away in December. Pete started his career at the age of six playing in The Nobby Carter Band, yep, his dad’s band. His wife Joan still has the very wage envelope that his 6d came in, a meagre start for what was to become a full and rewarding career which saw him play all around the world with The Bachelors, Emile Ford, Cliff and the Shadows and a host of other bands that have been well documented over the years. He was also Jim Davison’s music director and wrote his signature tune. It is not as well documented that Pete was a marvellous arranger and was as confident in an orchestra pit as he was with just a singer next to him.

Most of you will know Pete from his time as landlord of The Cherry Tree which he commandeered for his wife in 1989. With Joan at his side they turned the pub into a bastion of live music the legacy of which carries on today with the current incumbents Anne and Jess. Pete’s great humour, acerbic wit and classic put downs were part and parcel of The Tree. Fellow musician Rex Gates stands testimony to the emotion of the man - “I went down to London to a place in Swiss Cottage where he was staying, to tell him I was leaving Jimmy Justice with whom Pete played, and was going to work with Marti Wilde. He opened the door and I didn’t even get inside - whack! He chinned me and I cart wheeled over, spark out. The next thing I knew I came round and Pete’s cradling my head and crying his eyes out!!” Brotherly love as they say… but a fine example of the passion that the guy had for his fellow musicians and what he believed in. Although Pete was known for his guitar work at which he excelled and he could drum with the best of them, his real passion was the saxophone. The sax had been his father’s instrument before him and he loved playing it, if only for that reason. Pete and Joan left The Tree in 1994 after five

AND IT’S GOODBYE TO THE BIG MAN… It was also sad to hear that Greg Lawrence passed away the same week as Pete, although I didn’t know him personally, he was a huge figure on the music scene in Peterborough. From his legendary appearance on ‘Stars in their Eyes’ to his endless charity gigs, Greg had a voice and personality that lit up the room and, along with his daughter Nicole entertained people all around the world as The Big Man and his Band. Greg is another great performer who, at 54 has wandered off this planet far too soon, will be missed around the city and around the world. My condolences go out to his family and all at ESP wish them well.
