The excitement’s growing as we count down to the arrival of the Olympic Torch relay in the boro, and a counter’s now operating on Peterborough City Council’s Leisure and Culture page on its website . The city will be the first in the region to host the iconic flame and has been selected as the host of one of the 66 evening celebration events. The celebration will take place on the Embankment with loads of entertainment showcasing the city’s cultural and heritage offerings provided by Vivacity, Peterborough’s Culture and Leisure Trust and Peterborough City Council.

Coming to the Cresset stage this January is the energy and excitement of a live Rolling Stones concert. The Stones are a great tribute to the famous rock and roll band and will be covering songs spanning their career like (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction and Brown Sugar. There’ll be some great songs sung by Mick Jagger tribute artist Ben – who’s definitely got the moves like Jagger – supported by the rest of the talented band. LAST CHANCE FOR ALADDIN @ THE KEY It was packed out before Christmas but there’s still a chance to stretch out the festive spirit and take a magic carpet ride at the Key Theatre with this year’s fantastic panto, Aladdin.

The intimate setting of the Key is just perfect and the team have come up with a real cracker this year. We went along and can tell you there are some great performances all round – even ESP’s Stamford Calling columnist Matt Zilch makes an appearance as I Pong! It’s great to see Peterborough favourite Donna Steele return to take the stage in the title role and Patric Kearns is a dame who can handle any dirty washing as Widow Twanky! His one liners and improvisations command the stage but we have to say everyone gets a fair share of the fun, even evil Abanazar, brilliantly played by Philip Stewart.
Adam Patman puts in a great Lee Evans style performance as Wishee Washee and we loved the cheeky panto Panda! It’s funny, punchy and fast paced so no bored kids, and we reckon Tyler Fayose, who brings real life to the genie, should keep the mums happy too! This is one of their best yet so well done Michael Cross and the team. Aladdin runs until January 8 so don’t miss it, book now on 01733 207239.
HENRY BLOFELD SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED There’s more to Henry Blofeld than a cozy commentary box, and he’s coming to Spalding to tell everyone about his life and living it to the fullest. He’ll be telling audiences about his entry into the world of journalism and broadcasting with some great stories, plus some witty tales and ridiculousness including his link to his namesake Bond villain! It’s sure to be an evening that will have you positively shaken and stirred and itching for more. He’ll be at the South Holland Centre on January 11 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £15. Next to hit the screen on January 12 is The Tree Of Life – starring Sean Penn who plays a middle aged executive evidently in the throes of a midlife breakdown. Armadillo will be on the screen on January 19 at 7.30pm, described as a documentary that looks like an art film. This film records the routines of modern-day military, with central character Mads – a shy spotty youth who initially justifies his impending mission to his family by comparing it to football.

WHAT THE DICKENS?! As it’s the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’ birth we’re seeing quite a lot of the famous author lately and early next month there’s a special event coming up at the John Clare Theatre.

Dickens 2012 is a re-enactment, storytelling and talk by local historian Richard Jones. Dressed in full costume he’ll be re-enacting the man himself, talking about his life and performing readings from some of his best known works. He’ll be joined by Stuart Orme from Peterborough Museum (he of the city’s ghost walks!) revealing Dickens’ many links to Peterborough.

Follow the straw ‘bear’ around the town centre as he drops into several pubs (now you’re talking!) for a tipple followed by various folk dance troupes. Now we’re not talking six sad old blokes with hankies here – the new breed can be great to watch and like nothing you’ve seen before. It’s a quirky, unusual but fun event and the town really comes alive with music and dance. There’s a fantastic vibe in the pubs and the place is usually packed to the rafters with a great atmosphere. It all takes place from January 13 – 15 and kicks off with a concert at the Ivy Leaf Club at 8pm with bands like Quicksilver performing. On Saturday get there early as it’ll be heaving by the time the big parade gets underway at 10.30am with the straw bear being led through the town until 4pm (you’ll be well oiled by then!). On Saturday night you can have a knees up at the barn dance at the Sir Harry Smith Community College at 8pm (£9), or the Cajun dance at Childers (£7.50). When a celebrity comes to town ESP is usually not far behind. ESP’s showbiz writer Susan Saunders grabbed a word with motorbike star James Toseland at the Bull Hotel…

TOSELAND leading bike insurance companies and James is a huge biking star, I was still a bit confused. Did motorbikes and music really go together? “My first love was always music. My parents divorced when I was three and I went to live with my grandparents, who had a piano, so I started to play. I had piano lessons until I was 16, reaching grade six by the start of my motorbike career. I had to stop my lessons because I was racing all the time.
It’s not every day that you get to hang out with world champion motorbike stars, but that’s exactly what I got to do when James Toseland came to town for a charity gig with his rock band, Crash. For those of you who don’t know anything about the world of motorbike racing: think F1 but for motorbikes, James then, would be the equivalent to Lewis Hamilton; and his girlfriend, Russian born singing sensation, Katie Melua, would be our version of Nicole Scherzinger. In the wake of WSBK and MotoGP world champion James’ unexpected early retirement from motorbike racing, earlier this year, I got the rare opportunity to catch up with him to talk bikes, Bennetts, girls and his first love… music?! Retirement and 30 years-old aren’t words you’d often see in the same sentence. Although after a crash left him with a dislocated wrist and damaged ligaments, James – now aged 31 – couldn’t work the bike throttle effectively anymore and he had to retire from motorcycle racing. Thankfully though, James had already made World Superbike Champion twice (2004 and 2007), supported Queen to a crowd of 25,000 and played keyboard and sang in rock band, Crash. It’s fair to say then that he’d already achieved a lot. No stranger to Peterborough, James, who’s sponsored by Peterborough-based bike insurance brand, Bennetts, has been here before. Whilst I knew that Bennetts is one of the

He’s someone that I respect and grew up listening to, so it was great playing with him – definitely an achievement.” Wasn’t it hard juggling a world class biking career and singing?
“Ironically, I ended up being at home frustrated because of my accident and mum called to ask if I wanted to go with her to see Katie that evening. Mum dumped my step dad for me and off I went to Sheffield. Katie’s piano player was a big motorcycle fan and recognised me from the second row. He emailed and invited me to another gig where I got to meet everyone backstage, including Katie, and I used my Yorkshire charm to take it from there!” But just because they’re both musicians, it doesn’t mean that there’s a duet on the cards though – “It would only be a gimmick if I suggested a duet. Katie is such a professional and so I’d never put anything like that on her. “Hopefully, if I become an established artist in my own right, we could discuss it then and in the meantime we just sing around the house together. I do tell her that she should change the title of her track, Bicycles to Motorbicycles!” As an Isle of Man resident, having a girlfriend based in London and frequent engagements across the globe – I expect it’s difficult juggling everything? “I’m only in the country for 90 days a year which can make spending time with Katie hard but I think she’s relieved to know that however long I stay, I’ll be going home!”
“Well motorbiking season runs from February to October so I was also able to play at season end.” So, rumour has it that the hunk that is James is dating friend of ESP and past cover star, Katie Melua, who I had the pleasure of interviewing last year. “I met Katie when I booked tickets for my mum and I to watch her live in my home town of Sheffield, for my mum’s Christmas present,” James revealed. “Katie was taken ill and so it was rescheduled for February. As that’s in the motorcycle season, mum was going to take my step dad instead.

Chris’s face lit up like the Vegas strip when Faz signed his good luck charm. It was a stark contrast to Faz’s face when Posh’s press officer Phil Adlam teased him for allegedly having less pages dedicated to him in the book than Helgi Danielsson. Let’s just say a copy of the book is firmly lodged with Phil at all times…
He’s preserved his ‘lucky charm’ by mounting them on a piece of card and sealing the blades with sticky tape. His scribble on the back of the card tells the story of that unforgettable night. Chris waited 11 years to meet David so he could sign it. ‘Faz’ was one of several former Posh players signing copies of the latest Posh book Ebdon to Charlery – London Road Legends at Waterstones last month.

The motorcycle technician (posh name for grease monkey) completed a three-year NVQ 3 apprenticeship at the BMW training academy in Bracknell. He also gained IMI and ATA accreditation, which are both nationally recognised qualifications.
Gladly, a £200,000 investment hasn’t included a fairground ghost train ride as part of the revamp. Instead we’ve been treated to a plush, relaxed venue with a capacity for 250 people, which is the perfect size to make it welcoming. Halo bosses are behind this latest addition to our night-time offering and that means it’ll be around for a lot longer that Shooters was and definitely more popular too. WILLOW GARAGE GRUNGE Preparations are gathering pace for the return of The Willow Festival on the embankment this May and monthly events have been taking place since its re-launch at the back end of last year. The Willow will showcase 120 live bands from across the UK and abroad and organisers expect it to attract visitors of more than 50,000 as it did when it was last staged in 2003. It’s chilly outside but ESP’s style guru Sue Donnelly has the answer to keeping warm in style… Whenever I speak to people about layering they all assume it means piling on the pounds and visually looking like the proverbial Michelin Man. But if you know the secret, this needn’t happen. In fact layering can make you appear taller, slimmer, more shapely AND keep you warm throughout the winter months. The secret is to use lots of finer fabrics not thick ones. Lighter weight, stretchy fabrics that fit snugly around the body trap air against the skin ensuring you stay warm – without creating bulk. Building up a collection of these invaluable pieces means that you can easily mix and match, creating variety in your wardrobe. If you need something thicker, wear it in your outer layer – a coat or sweater maybe. Avoid wearing heavy fabrics on your top and bottom half together.
The Art of
Layering This is a better option if you’re petite, though you could forego the lacy petticoat which I’m wearing to bring the dress hemline down to a respectable length. The black tights and shoes elongate the leg and match the scarf around the neck making the whole body look taller than it actually is. Our eyes need to make sense of patterns so they automatically ‘join’ the black in the bottom half with that in the top creating a vertical elongating line. Wearing a matching colour top and bottom is a good trick generally if you’re shorter.

This type of layering is great if you’re really tall and want to appear shorter. By creating a number of obvious horizontal lines (there are seven in this outfit) the body is broken up into sections creating width and so you appear less tall. If you have no waist, ditch the belt or wear it lower on the hip.
Adding texture can also be beneficial. The faux fur shrug adds inches to the upper shoulder line so it’s great for those with larger hips (widening the shoulders reduces the size of the hips) or athletic types that want to showcase their shoulders. There are many different shades of black but don’t worry if they don’t match. The tights and boots shorten the legs so great for tall people but wearing all black would balance this out. I’ve chosen a charcoal long sleeve T-shirt but a slim fitting polo neck would also look great. If you have a larger chest, stick to a V or scoop neck.
This is where layering finer fabrics look flattering and funky rather than fattening. The longer length figure of eight necked T-shirt is incredibly lightweight but fits the body snugly, smoothing out any lumps and bumps. The lightweight cardigan adds an extra layer of warmth. You could ring the changes teaming with tights rather than jeans. Keeping the pattern to one piece adds interest as does the asymmetric hemline. Great for those of us with short legs.
Scarves can make an outfit and I’m a huge fan. I’ve layered up with three T-shirts, a fleecy jacket and some stretchy harem pants. Great for the gym.

LONDON ROAD Lifelong Posh fan Jamie Jones has turned his love of Peterborough United into a new venture that’s proved a huge success. His book Ebdon To Charlery – London Road Legends leapt off the shelves at Waterstones on Bridge Street, helped by some current Posh stars who signed some of the copies. It includes 170 pages profiling some of the figures that have made Peterborough United such a great football club from the 1950s through to the current day. Despite not being an official PUFC book, the football club have been very supportive and
Chairman, Darragh MacAnthony even wrote the foreword. A percentage from the sale of each book, priced £9.99, is being donated to the Posh Foundation charity and it’s also been sold at the club shop on London Road. Jamie, who is best known for his weekly unofficial Posh podcast, told ESP – “I am a lifelong Posh fan, and wrote the book so that the memories of these great players stays fresh in our minds and that of the next generation of Posh fans.” The fans clearly couldn’t wait to get their hands on a copy and for the chance to have the book signed by Posh favourites like Grant McCann, Gabi Zakuani, Tommy Robson, David Farrell and Marcus Ebdon. DAVID FARRELL IS A LEGEND – OFFICIAL! Modern-day Posh legend David Farrell is just one of the favourites featured in Jamie’s new book, and it comes not long after he was inducted into the Peterborough United Hall of Fame. ‘Faz’ has joined the likes of Ken Charlery, Chris Turner, Terry Bly and Tommy Robson in the Hall of Fame. He made more than 350 appearances for Posh during nine years at London Road but will always be remembered for a hattrick against Barnet in the play-off semi final in 2000. David (who even wrote the movie column for ESP back in the day) is now back at the club as Community Manager for Health and Education, so the announcement – which was made in front of nearly 10,000 fans before Posh’s league game against Derby – had to be planned behind his back.

“I was more shocked than anything, especially as all the planning was done on the QT, so I didn’t know a thing about it. The first thing I knew was when I went up to the executive suite before the match and they told me what was going to happen,” David told ESP.

When we went to Oldham in the FA Cup and had to hang on for the 1-0 win which took us through to the game against Chelsea. “There are lots of special memories for different reasons. Money obviously dictates a lot these days, so some of the things we achieved when we had no money at all and Barry Fry had to put his house on the line to keep us going can compare with some of the recent success.” David’s job at Posh means he can keep an envious eye on the current crop of players – but he sees his future coaching the next generation rather than the present generation. “There is a bit of envy when I see them playing in the Championship. There are times when I do miss playing, when I would like to pull my boots on. But the next best thing to playing is being involved through coaching.
David joined Posh from Wycombe in 1997, staying until 2006 when he moved to Boston.
“As to managing the first team, I’d never say never – but at the moment I can’t really see myself coaching higher up the age range. Youth team level is what I would really like to do.”

NEW LEASE OF LIFE FOR THE TOREADOR! MAMA’S DOES ITS BIT FOR SPORT AND THE ARTS
It’s great to be able to open my New Year column with some positive news and we were all really chuffed to hear that the Toreador is set to become a new venue in the town. It was leased from the Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre and is now being taken over by the theatre team who plan to use it as a café bar for pre-show meals and drinks, smaller more intimate events such jazz nights and also as a fantastic new private hire space. This cellar bar area holds around 200, and I’ve played there myself many times. It’s ideal for parties and weddings and Judith Mackie from the theatre tells me they’re even hoping to get it licensed so you could have the full ceremony and party! Judith’s looking forward to creating a new opportunity for the theatre and the town – “I do hope people will think ‘yes, that’s just what we need’ as there’s a shortage of private hire venues in the town. We’ll have an open day as I’m sure there are lots of people who’d like to take a look and potentially use it but who may have not ventured there when it was a bar.”
It’s always good to see Stamford venues getting behind local good causes and Mama Liz’s has stepped up with a couple of events helping out budding actors and budding roller bladers!
Renovations started before Christmas and it could well be open again by the end of January, so we’ll keep you posted as soon as we get the word.
First up it’s a fundraising night organised by the Mean Valley Roller Girls. These girls are trying to get a decent team together to compete so they’re staging a gig to raise some dosh. It’s on January 7 at the Voodoo Lounge and includes White Clouds and Gunfire, Flawless Victory, A Great Notion plus support and an aftershow DJ. It’s a fiver on the door so do your bit to help ‘save a rollergirl’ by helping them buy some safety gear.
Judging by the success of this night there certainly is a passion for fashion as I hear it was another cracking event. The Evo2 Events team put the night together once again featuring a fashion show and plenty of shopping at the Stamford Arts Centre Ballroom. The Welland School of Dancing kicked off the catwalk show, and local band Blue Soul Express entertained the shoppers. The event was supported by local businesses which is always good to see, with canapés donated by Thierry Daugeron Catering and sparkling wine donated by Adnams, the Tobie Norris, the Cosy Club and Opus Dai. The event was a huge success, raising two thousand pounds for Help For Heroes and Action Medical Research – so all good stuff all round. Nice one!

Later in the month it’s the turn of the Stamford Senior Youth Theatre to head to the Voodoo Lounge to raise funds on Sunday January 29. This talented bunch will be joined by nationally acclaimed performance poet, Hannah Jane Walker, for an evening of live music, poetry and comedy. All proceeds of the event will go towards funding SSYT’s new touring production Torchbearer, later in the year. Hannah Jane Walker is a Norwich based performance poet who’s performed at Latitude festival, Truck festival, Norfolk & Norwich festival and Forest Fringe. RIVERSIDE – THE RETURN!
the Riverside directors over the last few weeks to iron out some of the misunderstandings which led to the cancellation. The recent meetings have proved very productive and are set to continue on a regular basis in the future.
Something I’m really looking forward to this year is the return of the Riverside Festival, and so is my mate Andy Slater.

After some difficult times and the fest being cancelled in 2011, I was pleased to hear the team had managed to reach agreement with the Town Council at last and salvage the event for a return – with a few changes – in July.
It’s now going to be ticket only but it’s still a not-for-profit event and will need sponsorship. ESP always supported the Riverside Festival and we’ll be right behind it again so I’ll be keeping you posted as things get moving.

paparazzi Caught in the act? It’s party time... The team at the Cock Inn have been celebrating their first anniversary at the Werrington pub and threw a big party to celebrate. Mike Harris was our man behind the lens for this one and he managed to catch ESP’s very own live music reporter Keith Dalton enjoying the tunes by the wonderful One Eyed Cats, as well as enjoying a few pints! ESP’s Mikey Clarke grabs a word with 2012’s hot new talent… How do you know when you’ve officially ‘made it’ in the music industry? Perhaps when you’ve toured with Snoop Dogg, dueted with Ms Dynamite, had a Mobo nomination for best newcomer, a top 15 single and played at Glastonbury – all by the time you’re just 21? Well, new kid on the block Yasmin has done all that, and more. That’s why she’s set to be the music industry’s new revelation for 2012, with one of the most anticipated albums of the year.

Yasmin grew up in Manchester and Glasgow, joining the music scene by becoming one of those elusive figures – a female DJ! “As a child, my parents always had music playing in the house. By my teens I was already trying to look for different types of music than what was played on mainstream radio stations. I started recommending different kinds of music to friends and family. When I was 17, a DJ I knew let me play songs when he went on toilet breaks. That’s how I became a DJ – and again, I always liked to play songs people might not have heard in a while, or come across at all.”
Yasmin would be the first to admit, it’s a long road to success of your own accord – when you haven’t got a reality TV show to help you along the way. She says that’s what helps her to keep her feet on the ground. “It’s taken a lot of hard work and dedication to get even this far – but I’m passionate about what I do and I’ve grabbed every opportunity with both hands.” Even when things were taking off, she still put her own money into making her first music video. Now that’s commitment! “Even with everyone saying I’ll be the next big thing, you can’t let that go to your head. Things change all the time and I’m just going to keep working hard – after all, no one puts more pressure on me than myself.”
She went on to study Physiotherapy at university, and that’s when she started to realise that her other dreams of singing and song writing really could come true! Radio 1Xtra put a song Yasmin had made onto

“My album will be coming out – it’s been in the works for a while now, and there’s something for everyone, including remixes and club tracks inspired from my DJ background. Each song has its own message, which hopefully people will be able to connect with. It’s a new year with a new single – ESP’s showbiz reporter Susan Saunders has a quick catch up with Nicola Roberts…

It only seems like yesterday since my last interview with Nicola Roberts for our cover in July, but as we know, so much can happen in the world of showbiz in six months. Despite being mega busy – the upcoming Girls Aloud reunion and the like – it was great that Nicola took time out of her busy schedule to catch up with ESP. Fast becoming one of my favourite celebs, Nicola started the interview by asking about one of my favourite subjects in the whole world; me. This was new! So whilst I saw Nicola in the VIP lounge at a Rihanna gig in December, I wondered, what she’d been up to since we last spoke? Were her two pugs Ronnie and Reggie still as cute as ever? And of course I wanted to hear all about her upcoming single, so we had a lot to cover. “Well I can’t believe how fast it’s gone since we spoke! I feel like this year’s gone so fast, my feet haven’t really touched the ground since last November. I can’t believe it! I’ve been a busy bee.” Everyone had said performing on her own would be the same as riding a bike, after a two year break from the band, so was it? “It definitely wasn’t – I can tell you that!” So it wasn’t what you expected? “Nah. The first thing I did was two arena shows. The single had been on the internet for 24 hours. No one knew it – it was just so different from the last time I was on stage. “It was really good but just totally different. I did enjoy it though. It was weird coming from being at the studio for so long and submerged into studio life when you can rock up in a tracksuit and hair in a pony tail. Then you’re on stage in front of 10,000 people – it was a complete culture shock.” So apart from no end of promotional activity, gigs and the like, did Nicola have any down time in the summer? “Not really. I didn’t go anywhere this summer – I was just working. I have such an amazing team and we have such a laugh that it doesn’t feel at all like work. We call ourselves ‘Team Ginge’ and we were all together and we work hard but have fun too.” Whilst I could talk to Nicola for yonks, I felt it would be a good idea to step foot off the ‘Nostalgia Express’ and find out more about her upcoming single – Yo-Yo. “I wrote Yo-Yo with Demetri and Mya – most of us have been in a relationship or situation where you don’t know whether you’re coming or going – like a yo-yo. It’s the moody, desperate side of love rather than the needy side that we sometimes find ourselves in. Or just before you’re in a relationship and you don’t know where you stand.” Seeing the negligee moment in the video for Yo-Yo, I wondered if Nicola was prudish at all. “Do you know what? I’m not a prude at all. To be honest, this is the reality of being in a band or performer, which I have been since I was 16. You’re always in a room, whipping your clothes off – always in front of stylists, half dressed – always in front of people. I remember when I first met my boyfriend and he came to something that I was doing and when he came in, I was just walking around in my underwear. He was a bit shocked but my hairdresser just said to him ‘oh, get over it’. After eight years, it’s just normal. “I wasn’t like that when I first joined Girls Aloud. I was a total prude in the beginning. I wouldn’t get changed in front of anyone – always nipping off to the bathroom to get changed.” It sounds like this year’s going to be equally busy with her make-up range Dainty Doll, her fashion and of course her music, but Nicola wouldn’t reveal all the goss – “The next few months I’m really excited about – there’s a few bits I’m working on that I can’t talk about too much but I’ve just signed off my spring/summer collection and working on my autumn / winter collection for 2012 and working on new material.” I love her! Nicola, for me, could just be one of my mates, who despite the fame and fortune, is such a down to earth, girlie girl, which just makes her even more lovely. We’ll no doubt catch up with her again but in the meantime, her latest single Yo-Yo is available to buy in the shops and on download from Sunday January 8. It seats 40 (50 standing) and they cater for all tastes and budgets and are flexible on what you can spend if you need catering – Ann will even decorate the room in your favourite colour schemes. When his beloved horse is sold to the British cavalry, Albert enlists for duty, and their paths ultimately cross as the fearless Joey touches the lives of everyone he meets as war rages on the frontline. With a predominantly British cast that includes the talents of Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston – this should be a shoe-in for Oscar nods.

NEED FOR SPEED: THE RUN (PS3/360/WII/3DS/PC) Out now
After the exceptional Hot Pursuit, a change in direction for the franchise has provided a hitand-miss affair this year. By trying to offer a cinematic experience – you star as Jack Rourke, a man trying to shake off the mob to win £25million in a ‘no rules’ San Francisco to New York race – it tries something different, but ends up being a surprisingly dull and linear experience. It still has the tried and tested Need For Speed formula, but sadly this sticks the franchise in reverse after the bar was raised last year.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: WAR IN THE NORTH (360/PS3/PC) Out now It might not be saying too much – but this is the best console incarnation of The Lord Of The Rings so far. You star as a ranger, elf or dwarf in pursuit of an Orc lord, in an original story running parallel with Frodo’s quest to Mount Doom seen in the hit movies. With great weaponry and co-op mode it can be engaging fare, but it has limited exploration for a socalled RPG, and hacking and slashing can get a tad monotonous. But for LOTR fans this is the most ‘precious’ title for the franchise to date.

For a generation of gamers, the original Goldeneye will rank among the best of all-time. So Activision were up against it to provide the same sparkle 13 years on – with Daniel Craig replacing Pierce Brosnan in a revamped story – and with the impressive multiplayer mode it's easily the best next-gen Bond title. Although the new Goldeneye lacks the gloss of a big budget shooter, the addictive multiplayer is the highlight here – paying worthy homage to the N64 original. Throw in the all-new Mi6 mode and you've got a shooter that is licensed to thrill.

LEGO HARRY POTTER: YEARS 5-7 (360/PS3/WII/DS/PC) Out now Just as you could begin to grumble about another LEGO title – developers Traveller’s Tales continue to raise the bar to provide their best game yet. Based on the last four films, Hogwarts is relatively unchanged from the last outing, but this family-friendly package – complete with new dueling spells, great cut-scenes and all-round polish – has that important ingredient of fun in abundance. It may lack in originality, but for fans this is still spellbinding stuff.

You have a chance to see in the New Year accompanied by some live music in Peterborough’s Cathedral Square this year. The ESP dancers will be spicing the evening up with some brilliant routines and electro pop band The Whisky Jax, and rock ‘n’ roll trio Rocket 57 are performing live on stage. The countdown to midnight will be marked by a burst of fireworks and the event gets underway at 8pm.
BANDS HIT THE PUBS FOR NY EVE It seems to me that we’re getting more opportunities to see live music on New Year’s Eve, with more and more venues in the area booking bands for their festivities. Now, it could be because the bands have no friends to share the evening with or that they’re going to make a nice little earner, but I prefer to look at it from the perspective that it’s a win-win situation. The bands get to let their hair down whilst doing what they love doing, the pub has a great atmosphere for the evening, and you and I can enjoy live music instead of the same old disco that’s wheeled out for the night. As always, the ESP Gig Guide tells you where to see the bands every weekend but just to highlight a few of the venues that will bring us live music on the big night, here are just a few we’ve been told about so far…
TWICE AS NICE FOR QUEEN FANS It’s quite unusual for touring shows to appear for two nights at the Stamford Corn Exchange, but this will happen at the end of January when Queen tribute band, Mercury, come to the area as part of a string of 2012 dates.

big hit, greatly encouraged by the packed bar. The schoolboys range from 12 to 14 years-old and attend The Deepings School and Thomas Deacon Academy. The band’s made up of vocalist Liam Stone, guitarists Michael Firko and Joe Schollar with Bradley Caston on drums. Their music covers classic rock stretching from the 50s through to modern day popular music covers. The boys met at school and the band’s been together for the past six-months.
With the extraordinary vocal range and outstanding delivery of Joseph Lee Jackson as Freddie and the intricate guitar work of Glenn Scrimshaw as Brian May, backed by superbly crafted harmonies, a driving rhythm section and some powerful equipment these guys are well worth a watch.

After a decade on tour, Mercury have firmly established themselves as one of the world’s most authentic tributes to the legend that is Freddy Mercury and Queen.
They were recently very honoured to be asked by Freddie Mercury's family to perform live at the official unveiling of the UK's first permanent memorial to the life and work of Freddie Mercury at Feltham, South London. And what about this for an accolade from Freddie’s mum, Jer Bulsara – "Freddie was an original. He and Queen were the best. But now, in this new century, Joseph, Glenn & Mercury are the next best thing."

After the sad passing of Bob Banks from The Influence in November it’s heartening to hear that the remaining band members hope to find a new singer and bass player in order to honour the gigs they already had booked in. It will be under a new name though as I guess The Influence just won’t be quite the same without him.

DOG IN A DOUBLET BARKS ONCE AGAIN This well known pub on the Nene near Whittlesey has come back to life in cracking style! After a massive refurbishment by John McGinn (he of the Anchor in Wimblington) it’s looking great and attracting plenty of repeat custom. With three real ales available, a range of bottled beers and some great homemade food on offer from 10am-10pm it sounds like John’s put together an attractive mix. The food’s good quality, homemade form local produce and the Sunday carvery’s going down a storm. John tells us he has more plans afoot for the year ahead so we’ll keep you posted. On New Year’s Eve they have a great piano knees up going on upstairs with a disco downstairs and a buffet all for £23 so grab a ticket and help celebrate a pub’s re-opening rather than the closures we hear so much about!

Cambridgeshire Golden Ale has been taken up permanently by Marks & Spencer and now Hawse Buckler black beer, has been bottled and launched as the brewery’s winter seasonal beer. ...cheerful With January being notoriously quiet on the live music scene it’s always a good time to mull over what the coming year will be offering us especially as it looks like the economical outlook is, well, bleak.
If we are all stood on the edge of a financial precipice to which we are all likely to tumble, I guess I should try and bring you some glimmer of hope and point out a few things that should make us think of a future if slightly austere, still laced with fun.
I remember as I sold most of them. One that crept into the consciousness via Kerrang and MTV in about 2003 was a band called InMe. That wise old coot Chris Lovell booked them for The Club With No Name and within days had sold 350 tickets (via Lounge Lizard) for their show at the Park, or Club Revolution as it is now. The vibe amongst the kids at that time was electric; they couldn’t talk of anything else and treasured their prized tickets. Well, Dave McPherson lead singer of the band is back at Club Revolution on January 20 on his solo Love Rats Tour, a chance for the not-so-young fans to catch up with him in very close quarters. It’s been eight years since that time and most of the 14 year-olds that revered him then will have matured as he has and it will be interesting to see how many still hold the torch for him. Anyhow at 27 he’s a seasoned pro so expect a great show and an excitable following. www.clubrevolutionrocks.com
It’s great to see the Willow Festival coming back this year on May 25 – 27. I was fortunate enough to help Mark Ringer on the last one in 2003 (coincidently the same year as the InMe gig) and I know he put his heart and soul into it and I’m guessing this one will receive the same amount of passion. Some of the bands lined up already include King Kool, Burning Codes, The Fleeting Minds, The Nuggets, The Gangsters, Hooker,

Southern Discomfort and Aladdinsane. I’m sure the embankment will once again be alive and kicking, placing Peterborough on the festival map in a way it deserves. One definite change is the introduction of a camping field, if anything will draw people in from out of the area this is it – great change to the formula Mark and a very positive one. Those of you who remember the Lounge Lizard days of the late 1990s to mid 2000s will remember every kid in the area walking around with a black hoody on with bands such as Slipknot, Offspring, Korn and Green Day plastered across the front or back.
The Riverside Festival in Stamford is also up and running once again for 2012 which is great news. A slightly different format this year in that entry will be by ticket only. They’ll be available from the website in early Feb for all you bargain hunters out there so keep your eye on the website www.riversidefestival.co.uk. Expect three stages including the main stage and an acoustic roots stage as well as stalls, food outlets, fireworks finale and the all important real ale tent! It’s on July 7, very near my birthday, so if you remember and see me there you can buy me a pint… or two.
