POST ORGANIC TATTOOS

COLIN TAKES OVER THE FALCON

There’s a new place to get inked, but with an old face involved, popular award-winning tattooist Rob Donaldson. Post Organic is a tattoo and piercing studio offering custom designs, all forms of body piercing and natural aftercare with hygienic treatment areas and is based in Parnwell Centre. The studio was opened by Darren Macer at the end of November and can cater for all your tattooing needs whether it requires freehand designing (drawn directly onto the skin) or a custom design drawn up.

The Falcon Hotel in Whittlesey has just been through a management buy out. ESP was very happy to hear that Colin Wilson, formerly the manager, became the proud owner in December 2012. The hotel continues to trade and you can clearly see the changes Colin’s made since he joined The Falcon, through his hard work and determination. There’s a great function room, special events and of course with Valentine’s coming up you can book in for a fabulous three course meal of your choice for just £17.50. Tel 01733 351001.

Even better there’s free parking and it’s close to bus stops to and from the city centre. All the artists are licensed by Peterborough Health Authority so you know your skin’s in safe hands! They offer portraits, black and grey, photo realism, cover ups, re-works, full colour, bio mechanical, bio organic, traditional and Japanese work. Give the guys a call on 01733 890545 or 07731 043039.

START YOUR BUSINESS @ CITY MARKET

RECH@RGE AT NENE PARK ACADEMY

If you’ve got a touch of the Alan Sugar’s about you, and we don’t mean a grumpy face and sharp suit, why not consider getting your business idea off the ground by taking a stall at the Market?

As part of its £14.25 million transformation, Nene Park Academy’s teamed up with leisure and fitness brand Rech@rge to provide an opportunity for the local community to share its new gym and fitness centre. It’ll officially open on Monday January 7, offering affordable membership and individual fitness sessions. The Academy will have sole use of the centre during the day for PE lessons but in the evening it’ll be open to the community with a wide variety of fitness classes ranging from Zumba, Bokwa, and spinning through to classics like old school aerobics, and use of a small state of the art gym. Rech@rge at Nene Park Academy’s manager, Catherine Graver, told ESP – “We have some of Peterborough's most experienced and talented fitness professionals on board and will be offering studio only memberships from as little as £17 a month.”

ROLLER SKATING IN SPALDING The Castle Sports Complex in Spalding celebrates 25 years of skating this month with a special event on Saturday January 5. READY TO SWITCH?

If you fancy a break from the cooking there are two great reasons to pop over to Angel Spice in Stilton this month. Chill out on a Sunday and let their chefs do the work with their all day Sunday buffet from 12 – 10pm with 40 mouth-watering dishes available, including English. Adults £8.95 per head, children and senior citizens £4.95 per head while kids under 6 years-old eat for free.

With gas and electricity bills skyrocketing it’s worth switching to a new council scheme where you could shave up to £200 off your energy bill. Ready to switch? uses the combined purchasing power of local communities to negotiate cheaper prices with energy companies. It works by individual households switching energy provider as a group at the same time – and everyone saves on their own bill. The more households that register the bigger the group discount that’s then passed on to everyone!

Then there’s the fabulous 15% off food deal throughout January on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays when you quote ESP! Book now on 01733 244373.

It’s also quick and easy to register – but you only have until January 28 to sign up. Either visit www.readytoswitch .co.uk or call the council on 01733 747474.

PETERBOROUGH ARTS CINEMA’S NEW SEASON During 2012 the Arts Cinema at the John Clare Theatre on Broadway showcased a plethora of great cinema and judging by some of the films on show this month, 2013 is going to be no different. Every Thursday at 7.30pm throughout January the cinema will be showing a critically acclaimed film. Showing on Thursday January 3 is a beautiful, cerebral documentary called Nostalgia for the Light (12A). Set in Chile’s Atacama Desert this 90 minute film tells the stories of two contrasting groups of people living in Earth’s driest habitat. Whether it’s the astronomers observing galaxies through the world’s greatest telescopes or survivors of Chilean dictator Pinochet searching for remains of his 60,000 victims, this is a film about time, memory and the need to explore the past. Then on Thursday January 10 comedy is on the agenda as Calendar Girls director Nigel Cole tells the story of the contemporary British Asian family in All in Good Time (12A). Set in Bolton the film follows newlyweds Atul (Reece Ritchie) and Vina (Amara Karan) who, thanks to their honeymoon being cancelled, struggle to consummate their marriage in the cramped family home. Packed with laugh out loud moments and tender heartfelt scenes it’s not to be missed. Next up on Thursday January 17 is a French psychological thriller starring Kristen Scott Thomas. In Your Hands (15) tells the story of a surgeon (Anna) struggling with the memories of her abduction by the vengeful husband of a patient who died during a Caesarean operation carried out by Anna. Tense and intellectual viewing. On Thursday January 24 the psychological thrillers keep coming with Peter Strickland’s Berberian Sound Studio (15). The film follows a British sound technician in the 1970s brought to Italy to work on the sound effects for a gruesome horror film. His nightmarish task slowly takes over his mind, driving him to confront his own past. 90 minutes of scare filled cinema. Finally on Thursday January 31 the cinema rounds off the month with the superb romantic comedy Moonrise Kingdom (12A) with a star studded cast featuring Bruce Willis, Edward Norton and Bill Murray to name a few! Various members of a town come together to search for some young runaways and the town is turned upside down… which might not be such a bad thing. Directed by Wes Anderson. There’ll be more at the Peterborough Arts Cibnema next month. Alex Jones

A right

Royal end to 2012

What a year it’s been in Peterborough with the successful return of the Willow Festival, a two day Italian Festival that brought the crowds out for Gino D’Acampo, the Olympic Torch relay celebrations in the city, medals galore for our local Olympic and Paralympic heroes, the Perkins Great Eastern Run attracting more runners than ever and then just to seal the deal we get a Royal visit to end 2012 in style! Here at ESP we’ve been covering all the great stuff happening in and around the city throughout the year so when it came to Kate and Wills – try stopping us! The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who of course will be celebrating the birth of their first child this year, wowed crowds at Peterborough City Hospital when they dropped in to conduct the hospital’s official opening. The couple were greeted by hundreds of schoolchildren from Netherton, Westwood and Bretton and were then formally welcomed by Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust chairman Nigel Hards and interim chief executive Dr Peter Reading. They were shown around an orthopaedic ward, where they met patients who were recovering from surgery and chatted with staff. They then made their way to an official opening ceremony in the hospital’s restaurant, where the Duke unveiled a commemorative plaque for the hospital’s main atrium. Photos: Chris Brudenell

Trust chairman Nigel Hards told ESP – “It was a fabulous day for our staff and our patients. The Duke and Duchess told us they wanted to meet as many staff and patients on this, their first visit to Peterborough. They went out of their way to chat to people and I know our staff really appreciated that. We were pleased that so many staff got to see the couple while still managing to keep the hospital running as usual.”

FOLLOW THE BEAR FOR A GREAT TIME We all need a good time come January so forget the dark nights, dodgy weather and back to work blues and follow the bear round the pubs in Whittlesey! The annual Straw Bear Festival is always a good knees up and the atmosphere around the town is just great as the pubs are packed and the streets lined with entertainment.

Prior to that though there’s a concert on Friday January 11 at the Ivy Leaf Club including music from the Candle Thieves, Bram Taylor and Pam Ward and Paul Cherrington. After the Straw Bear has made is way a round the town on the Saturday there’s a Barn Dance at Sir Harry Smith Community College or you can opt for the Cajun Dance at Park Lane Primary – tickets for these are £9 on 01733 204055 but usually sell out fast. The ‘Bear’ is burned at Sir Harry Smith Community College between 12.30 and 2pm on the Sunday. Not sure what on earth a bloke dressed in straw is doing downing pints in Whittlesey? Check out www.strawbear.org.uk for all you need to know!

Photos: Chris Brudenell

On Saturday January 12 the main event starts with a procession from the Manor Leisure Centre at 10.30am along Market Street via the Market Place. This is followed by a full day of dancing around the town by the invited dance sides and finishes with a finale back on the Market Place at 3pm.

We love a little good news and the launch of The Green Room Live Sessions this month is certainly welcome. The idea is to provide a performance venue for good quality local bands playing original tunes in the city centre.

MEN IN HIGH HEELS

Ribbon Campaign is the largest effort in the world of men working to end men’s violence against women. Wearing a white ribbon is a personal pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women. Each year, people are urged to wear a ribbon for one or two weeks, starting on the International Day for the Eradication of Violence Against Women.

It starts at 8pm and will be just £4 admission on the door which sounds a deal to us!

Local guys took to the streets of Peterborough a few weeks back to step it out in a pair of high heels! It wasn’t just so they can understand the suffering girls go through to look great on a night out but to help raise awareness of the suffering of women through domestic violence.

The next night is lined up for Friday March 1 and they’ll be monthly. To find out more just search for The Green Room Live Sessions on facebook or @TheGr33nRoom on Twitter.

The SaferPeterborough Partnership asked local fellas to put on a pair of high heels and join the White Ribbon Campaign to ‘Walk a Mile in Her Shoes’. The White

Well done to all those who braved it and strutted their stuff in heels through the city centre!

The Green Room Live Sessions launches at Radius above The Solstice on Saturday January 26 with professional sound and lighting and a great line-up. This opener includes The More I See, Pet Slimmers of the Year, I Want A Treehouse and Smokescreen – all popular well established bands in the Peterborough area.

KATHARINE OF ARAGON FESTIVAL Hands up who knows their local history and is aware Katherine of Aragon was laid to rest at Peterborough Cathedral. Firstly on Friday January 25 there’s a Tudor Banquet in the Becket Chapel. This unique event will be hosted by The Dean and will embrace all the delicacies found on an authentic banquet menu from the period, complete with bawdy Tudor entertainment! For ticket info on this one call 01733 355315 – but don’t hang about. VIP @ ATTICA If you haven’t managed to visit Peterborough’s newest nightclub and cocktail lounge Attica VIP yet, just take a look at this! Plenty of people have already poured through the doors since its launch in December, eager to see for themselves what this great new addition to the city’s nightlife has to offer. Even model and former TOWIE star Maria Fowler dropped in for a night out and enjoyed an evening in one of their fabulous plush booths. Steve Stinders from Attica VIP told ESP – “We’re all really excited about the year ahead and our continued success. Attica VIP has got off to a great start and we’d like to thank everyone for their support so far. ESP’s Mikey Clarke chats to our cover star

Ellie Goulding... Mikey Clarke

It was quite clear that Ellie Goulding’s second album Halcyon was going to be a hit. After all, when fans were offered a free download of her song Hanging On, the volume of fans rushing to hear the track caused Soundcloud to crash.

Halcyon is a fantastic album which I bought my wife for Christmas, and was honoured to chat with Ellie about it… Our exclusive interview took place moments after Ellie had returned from visiting the teenage ward at St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester. She described this experience as – “A lot of fun. There’s no point going to these places and being down, that’s not what the patients want. So me and my band went down, played a couple of songs, and had a laugh – as we always do.” Halcyon is the follow-up to Ellie Goulding’s hugely successful debut album Lights which was released in 2010 and has gone on to sell one and a half million copies and generate five million single sales worldwide. How does it compare to the first album? “It’s got a different sound,” Ellie told me. “I’ve really benefited from working with a new producer, Jim Elliot. It also helped that I’d already released an album. I had a much clearer vision of what I wanted to make, and I feel that comes across in the tracks.” All the songs on Halcyon were written and coproduced by Ellie. I asked where she gets her inspiration. “There’s a lot of my life in these tracks. I think about my upbringing, family and friends when writing songs. I’m also a country girl, which I think comes across in the music.”

Amongst all the songs on the album, Ellie revealed – “My Blood is my favourite. It really captures the emotion I was feeling when writing the album. When I wrote that song, I knew I was on the right track with the album.” Doing my homework for the interview, I’d read an article where the popular singer was described as a ‘vixen’. I asked if this is a fair statement. She laughed – “If I’m a vixen now then I’ve always been one, because

at this moment of time, I’ve never felt more myself.” Asking how she would describe herself, she replied – “My fans would agree when I say I like to have fun. But I also have periods of being quiet, which I guess is normal. But I think it’s more noticeable with so many people around me. I’m also a big thinker, and am often thinking of a million things at once.” Whilst most of us spend our Christmas singing along to tunes in the car, Ellie recalls being invited to sing at the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at the White House, joining Barack Obama on stage for a round of carols. “The experience was mental,” she said. “There was so much security, and there we were singing festive songs. I met Obama and his wife afterwards and kept asking myself why I was so worthy of meeting the president.” Ellie spent a lot of this December singing her own songs out on tour. Don’t worry if you missed her though as she’s promised – “2013 is really going to be my tour year. It will be the year where things really kick off. It won’t stop.” Asking what she plans to do when not on stage, she told me – “I plan to face my fears and man-up a little. I hope to do a skydive, run a marathon and try to squeeze in a little side-project too.” Find out more about Ellie Goulding’s album, tour dates, and possibly more on this mystery side-project by visiting www.elliegoulding.com

ATTICA VIP COCKTAILS ARE SMOKIN’! I used to love a bit of sex on the beach action back in the day but in recent years my adventurous tendencies have given way to my cultured, more sophisticated side.

THIS GREEDY ITALIAN CAN’T WAIT TV programme Two Greedy Italians, starring chefs Antonio Carluccio and Gennaro Contaldo, epitomised the relationship us Italians have with food and this greedy Italian is foaming at the mouth in anticipation of Carluccio’s opening in town. Better still I’ll get to meet the big man Carluccio again (we talked Alfa Romeos at the Italian Festival in 2011) when his restaurant opens in Cumbergate at the end of the month. For me it’s fitting that Carluccio’s will be on the former Harriet’s Tearoom site, as this was once the home of the original Topo Gigio’s and Miss Pears back in the 80s. The building and location lends itself perfectly to a decent Italian restaurant that offers all-day dining and a deli. Needless to say Carluccio’s will serve quality, authentic Italian food and at sensible prices – two courses will cost around £15. Lunchtimes at the deli will include ciabatta sandwiches, piadina (Italian flat bread), light salads and sweet treats. Then there’s the food shop with lots of products sourced direct from small artisan producers in Italy including oil, wines, coffee, biscuits, pastas, polenta, rice, antipasti, sauces and handmade chocolates (yum). The arrival of Carluccio’s is another example of how our city is marking its territory on the visitor destination map. We’re fast becoming a place established businesses are investing in (TK Maxx, Chimichanga, Nando’s, Patisserie Valerie and Primark to mention a few) and long may it continue.

That’s why you’ll see me in Attica VIP sipping on a Bourbon Blazer instead of necking a cocktail I only used to order if being served by a tasty barmaid. “Can I have sex on the beach darlin’?” How mature. Anyway, studying the cocktail menu in Attica is a bit like being a kid in a sweet shop – you want them all! I had my first of many of these classy concoctions at the VIP opening night and I have to say the cocktails alone set Attica apart from anywhere else on the city night scene. In fact, writing about them makes me want one now. Attica needs to do home deliveries. This venue is living up to its pre-opening hype as being the only club in town where style and sophistication come as standard and the rest is up to you. If you’re over 21 and make an effort to dress up you’ll gain entry. Attica is upmarket and sitting in any of its plush VIP booths with dedicated waitress service really does make you feel extra special. Congratulations to Steve and his team. You know where I am if you need a cocktail adding to your range...

Marvin Hagler was in my opinion the best middleweight of his time and we’re privileged to have the former 1980s undisputed champion come to Peterborough courtesy of Kevin Sanders.

SPECIAL EDITION MODELS AT BALDERSTON Three ‘90 Year Special Edition’ motorcycles – the R 1200 GS Adventure, R 1200 RT tourer and R 1200 R roadster – have been launched by BMW and you can get a taste of what they’re all about by popping into Balderston in Hampton. All three bikes feature a boxer-twin engine, the same layout used in the very first BMW motorcycle: the 1923 R32. They come with a subtle, refined overall paint scheme echoing the classic BMW Motorrad black and gold colours. There’s also an exclusive nickel-plated and polished brass plate feature on the bikes, bearing the inscription ‘90 Jahre BMW Motorrad.’ The special edition models are a sound investment but if it’s a middleweight tourer you’re after then the new F 800 GT could be your bike. Being a GT, this baby is dripping with highspecification options and comes with more power than its predecessor, better ergonomics and automatic stability control and electronic suspension adjustment. It’s also lighter, which for someone with puny muscles like me matters a lot. So, my Balderston buddies, when can I get my leg over it for a few miles?

MAN FLU APOLOGY A near death bout of man flu prevented me from turning out at the Rutland Harley Owners Group Christmas charity ride. Apologies to Michael Mann (now there’s a famous Hollywood name) at Bennetts, who invited me. Let me know what ride-outs and events you’ve got planned this year.

“IS THAT YOU SADIE?” She was part of the ESP family for years but that didn’t stop me confusing her with sales girl Sadie over the phone every time I called the office. So, a part of me is comforted that reporter and office support Lara has left us to explore pastures new because this means I can’t muddle them up anymore. But a bigger part of me will miss Lara’s work ethic and dedication to the ESP cause. Good luck Lara and stay in touch. Now Sadie, how long before I call you Maggie?

ESP’s style guru Sue Donnelly helps you achieve your New Year’s resolutions with a little help from your wardrobe.

How To Dress To Get What You Want

Water

Wood

We all know what it’s like to have a wardrobe full of clothes and nothing to wear. It’s a common complaint – clothes are too big, too small, don’t go together, aren’t appropriate, no longer flatter etc. etc. The simple act of getting dressed can turn into a nightmare. Fashion Feng Shui® takes dressing a whole step further. Using the five elements of Feng Shui and translating them into design, colour, fabric and shape of everyday garments helps you choose your clothing not just on how you want to look, but on what you want to get out of life. The perfect aid to achieving your New Year resolutions. Wardrobe issues arise when people are in transition. Their lifestyle, goals or bodies have changed but their clothes have not caught up with them. Change indicates that Ch’I is flowing – which is a good thing. As the circumstances of your life evolve, so should your wardrobe and personal style. Keep track of what you truly desire to keep your life and your wardrobe on track. WATER: This is reflected in dark colours, fluid or sheer fabrics, floaty designs and abstract patterns. Wear these if you want to express your individuality, become more creative, artistic or original in your thinking, explore your spirituality, find wisdom, freedom, serenity, or just BE. If life is getting overwhelming, wearing a floaty or asymmetric design in a dark colour will help you find inner peace.

20

www.espmag.co.uk

WOOD: Embracing the outdoor life, this element is found in blues and greens, florals and stripes, plant derived fabrics (denim, linen, cotton, bamboo) and linear shapes. Call upon wood if you wish to improve your health and vitality, become more competitive, desire action and growth, crave new horizons or need motivation. This is the element of Doing. If procrastination is stopping you from moving forward, wearing jeans and a striped top or t-shirt will help you find the mental and physical agility you need.

Fire

FIRE: Kick up your heels, step into the limelight, have fun and find your passion in life. Attract attention by wearing red, magenta or purple, animal prints, shiny fabrics, leather, suede, fur, pointed/diamond shapes and patterns in clingy fabrics and body conscious designs. EXCITE, enjoy, connect and enthuse. A red, body hugging dress and patent leather pointed toe shoes will get you noticed. A purple or animal print scarf will also do the trick.

Earth

EARTH: Need to feel needed, secure, part of a community, grounded, stable, trusted? Require harmony, compassion, support and loyalty? Then Earth dressing is for you. Choose yellow, brown, earth tones, textured fabrics, square patterns and boxy shapes to allow you to give and receive. Cardigans, cable knits and kilts are perfect vehicles for you to NURTURE, be of service to others and enable a community spirit around you.

Metal

METAL: Calls for a rise in standards. Organisation, excellence, quality, beauty, completion, precision and status are the goals. If you wish to REFINE, wearing white, pastels or metallics, luxurious fabrics, round or curved patterns in simple designs can assist you to upscale the quality in your life and bring order to chaos.

paparazzi Caught in the act? A special tribute night in memory of local music promoter Paul Chatham certainly did him proud at the Peterborough Sports & Leisure Club recently. The local music scene’s very best turned out to perform and enjoy the night for Paul who sadly passed away last year. The night raised £1,150 for the Lung Foundation. Organiser Dave Houlden wants to thank Colin Smith and his sound and lighting team, all the bands who took part, the 200 or so who went along, Tracy Slater for doing the collection and the photos and ESP’s very own Andy Slater who was the compere for the night. Meanwhile ovver at Edwards the regular Mixology nights are going down a storm with clubbers in the Red Room on Broadway. You know where to head for good times! Photographers Wayne Williamson and Mitch Brewster have been out capturing the party people in action. Looking good people! See all our Paparazzi photos on www.espmag.co.uk and facebook.

LOUIS IS OUR WINNER OF 2012!

ESP’s Sarah Tempest celebrates Eye gymnast Louis Smith’s incredible year…

What a year it’s been for Peterborough gymnast Louis Smith! First came the London 2012 Olympics where he won a silver medal, making him the first British gymnast to win an Olympic medal since 1928. Then came lucrative sponsorship and advertising deals (“pick us up a turkey sub with all the salad and honey mustard sauce would you, love? If it’s good enough for our Louis…”), the television appearances on shows such as A League of Their Own and 8 Out of 10 Cats and of course, his amazing achievement in Strictly Come Dancing. Yes it’s true, the pride of Peterborough really has, well… done Peterborough proud this year and here at ESP we’ve been with Louis every scissor legs swing and kick ball change of the way. Although used to wearing leotards for a living, moving from gymnastics into the lycra and sequins clad world of Ballroom and Latin for Strictly Come Dancing was always going to be a big ask but in true Olympian fashion, Louis took on the challenge. Despite chronic under-marking and often less than encouraging

26

www.espmag.co.uk

comments from the judges, Louis received standing ovations week after week, and with his phenomenal Twitter fan base (#crewlove!) and reams of phone votes, he quickly became the people’s champion and the bookies favourite to win. No pressure then!

I’ve met and interviewed Louis several times now and always found him to be charming and polite, but meeting him again mid-Strictly, it was clear to see that the ‘coming out of his shell’ that we saw happen during the series really gave him a new sense of self-assurance which was great to see. As his biggest supporter, his mum Elaine said – “He’s had no dance background, no theatrical training, he’s just done his gym so to get so far, I’m really proud of him. I knew he would put everything into it!” And there have certainly been some highs (that Halloween Tango, just stunning and Louis and Flavia’s first 10s for the Charleston) and the lows (mostly the judges’ comments and scoring) along the way and, as ESP Magazine’s Strictly blogger, I’ve been shouting and cheering at my telly, in equal measures, along the way. Although in a poll of Louis’ fans conducted by Twitter fan page @teamflouia, Louis and Flavia’s Dirty Dancing Salsa scored highly as most people’s favourite, for me it has to be either the amazing Halloween Tango where Louis played a dancing Zombie (that’s not meant to be a joke!) or the ‘make or break’ Charleston which, fortunately, was ‘make’ as Louis finally managed to drag his inner performer kicking and screaming (and smiling and face pulling) to the fore and danced his socks off. Low points for me had to be when posh judge ‘OK yah, your core, yah’ Darcey Bussell, dismissed Louis’

gymnastic skills as ‘tacky tricks’ (I nearly tackily backflipped in fury) and when Craig criticised his acting ability saying – “You can go no further unless you give yourself up”. Well, with some guidance from an acting coach, give himself up Louis did and the following week he not only came back full of character but even laughed convincingly at one of Brucie’s jokes. Give that boy an Oscar I say! To come over all X Factor on you, Louis has certainly been on a journey this last year as he adjusts to life post gymnastics (he’s unlikely to chase for Gold at Rio in 2016) and Strictly has certainly played a huge part in this. But even now that the series has finished, Louis won’t be hanging up his dancing shoes just yet as he’s heading off on the Strictly Live Tour in 2013. As his mum told us – “That’ll be a new thing for him too; he’s never been away on tour with anything. He’s gone away and competed but this is supposed to be really good fun, he’ll enjoy it.” Enjoy it he certainly will and he’s sure to be a big draw for the crowds. Whatever happens, 2013 is set to be another big year for our Louis, although it has to be said, his achievements in 2012 are going to take some beating. But if anyone can continue onwards and upwards and rise to the challenges along the way, Louis has proved it’s him and one thing’s for sure, the support he receives from his home city shows no signs of dying down quietly.

If you fancy catching Louis on the Strictly Live Tour, you can catch him at the Birmingham NIA from January 18 – 21, in London from February 2 – 6 or Nottingham on February 7 and 8.

We’re not on trend... we’re beyond trend

As he’s a gymnast with no previous performing experience, how do you feel about how well he’s done in the show?

STRICTLY’S SINGER HAYLEY SANDERSON Whilst I’ve had a ball following Louis’ progress and being ESP’s Strictly blogger, we’ve also had another Peterborough gal on site in the shape of Hayley Sanderson, a singer in the resident Dave Arch band and we caught up with her to get the inside goss! As you’re from Peterborough, has it been good to have someone from the city actually compete in the show and have you been rooting for him especially? “Louis isn’t the only Strictly guy from Peterborough; Jimi Mistry is also from the ’borough and Ricky Groves lives on the outskirts! It’s always amazing to see people from the city do so well and of course I root for all of them! It would be great to have an all city final one year!”

“Louis has got the facility to be a great dancer. Being a gymnast has its strengths and weaknesses when it comes to the dance floor. He has great core strength and flexibility, however he can be too flexible and that becomes noticeable in certain styles like the Tangos where you need to be sharp and strong, not bendy! He definitely deserved to be in the final.” You're a seasoned performer on the show now – what do you like best about it? “What I like best about Strictly is the same thing that scares the hell out of me – the vast number of songs and styles you get to cover you would never get to do in any other job! And especially not with some of the greatest musicians on the circuit. But sometimes the artists we cover have gigantic shoes to fill and that can be daunting!” What particular songs do you like to perform? “I like things like Amy Winehouse, Peggy Lee, Dusty Springfield... mostly songs with great melodies and are either old or have a vintage feel to them. I find it easier to sing Bassey than Kylie!”

Can you spill some gossip on what Louis has been like behind the scenes?

Tell us about your new project and what you'll be doing now Strictly’s over?

“Yeah, he's great – Louis likes a wind up! The Christmas special over ran about two hours. I was finally ready to go home and get in my bed when Louis calls me back to tell me we have to redo the last number again. It's not until I've taken my jacket off and got back to my stool do people decide to tell me he was joking. He's going to be a right one on tour, I can feel it in my bones!”

“I'm going straight into rehearsals for the Strictly Arena Tour and I’ll also be promoting my band, The Stylophones. We recorded the radio jingle for Nick Carter’s Radio Cambridgehsire show for the new year and we sang live with some original tunes on his Christmas show.”

A young Indian man (Suraj Sharma) is cast away after surviving a disaster at sea, and forms an unexpected connection with another survivor – a fearsome Bengal tiger.

Dustin Hoffman makes an interesting first major foray into directing – by helming some of Britain’s finest actors in this comedy drama set at a home for retired opera singers. An annual concert is disrupted by eternal diva Jean (Maggie Smith), who is also the former wife of one of the residents. With Billy Connolly and Pauline Collins.

Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts star in this emotionallymoving drama about a family caught in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of all-time – the Boxing Day 2004 tsunami that hit Southeast Asia. Tom Holland co-stars in the movie from acclaimed Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona.

Chainsaw-wielding psychopath Leatherface returns in this madefor-3D sequel – that reportedly fills in the blanks of what happened after the original story – which sees a young woman (Alexandro Daddario) and her friends terrorised when she inherits an isolated Victorian mansion on a Texan estate.

This movie version of the acclaimed musical – from Oscarwinning The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper – sees Hugh Jackman star as the infamous Jean Valjean, who takes care of a factory worker’s (Anne Hathaway) daughter (Amanda Seyfried), while being trailed by a ruthless policeman (Russell Crowe) in nineteenth century France.

Released: January 25

This crime drama was pulled from its post-summer slot after a scene echoed the sad killings at The Dark Knight Rises cinema screening in Colorado last year. Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin and Emma Stone head an all-star cast, which denotes the LAPD’s fight against Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn).

This is the latest Disney film to get the 3D re-release treatment in anticipation of the prequel to this 2001 original, Monsters University, coming out in July. You know the story already, Billy Crystal’s Mike Wazowski and John Goodman’s Sulley on scaring duty – but it’s still one of Pixar’s very best.

Arnie’s back in his first major movie role since his long film sabbatical as the Governator. Schwarzenegger stars as a small-time Sheriff of a Mexican border town who must try and stop an escaped drug lord in this action-drama. With Oscarwinner Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) and Jackass’s Johnny Knoxville.

Oscar-season officially starts here. The first for your consideration is Steven Spielberg’s biographical drama of the sixteenth President of the United States Abraham Lincoln – with reportedly another stand-out performance from perennial Oscarwinner Daniel Day-Lewis in the lead role. A great cast, including Tommy Lee Jones, are in support.

An even better early favourite for Best Film at the Oscars is The Hurt Locker’s best director gongwinner Kathryn Bigelow, with her latest film that chronicles the hunt for Osama Bin Laden – and his eventual May 2011 death at the hands of Navy SEAL’s – after the 9/11 attacks. Jessica Chastain should be there-or-thereabouts for Best Actress.

FAR CRY 3 (360/PS3/PC) Out now Being seemingly one of the few people that still really loved the second game – despite its flaws – this really soars to the next level. This bountiful open world shooter/RPG adventure – now thankfully with ‘fast travel’ between map points – is a beautifully crafted game as you’re left marooned on a jungle-laden island with a psychotic warlord, Vaas, on your tail.

#####

For gung-ho shooting fans the side missions may get a little repetitive, but for methodical completionists like myself – clocking up more than twenty hours of gameplay proves to be a truly gratifying experience. Probably my Game of the Year.

EPIC MICKEY 2: THE POWER OF TWO (360/PS3/WIIU/PC) Out now This has been harshly treated in some quarters despite being an extremely compelling experience – particularly if you’re a Disney fan. It won’t be everyone’s cup-of-tea, but if you dig deeper into this magical world – as Mickey Mouse teams up with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit in single or co-op modes – it’s a beautifully-designed role-playing platformer.

#####

Camera niggles, repetition and single-player AI issues are annoyingly still present – but Walt would’ve loved this colourful love letter to his creations.

PLAYSTATION ALL-STARS BATTLE ROYALE (PS3/PSV) Out now You’d be hard pressed to deny that Sony are trying to recreate on their system what Nintendo have done with Smash Bros. But that doesn’t matter as this fighter hits the spot as you play as some of the console’s exclusive characters – from Nathan Drake, Sackboy and Kratos, to obscure and third-party combatants, such as Bioshock’s Big Daddy.

#####

Despite presentation surprisingly lacking, the strategic fighting elements lay solid foundations – and PS3 fans won’t be disappointed.

Look out for

LITTLEBIGPLANET KARTING (PS3) Out now

Pro comeback in the New Year

Just like my two-star review of F1 Race Stars in the last edition this sadly falls short of karting greats on other consoles. The team behind ModNation Racers take a backward step by amalgamating the usually creative world of LittleBigPlanet into a racing engine and provides a muddled experience – despite providing solid karting mechanics that most kids will still find engaging. On this occasion Sackboy and co have tried too hard – which sadly leaves it languishing in mediocrity.

Vic Imbriano – Boxing Trainer I

DREDD (18)

I

Released: January 14 I

Most of the time violent ‘18’ rated action films are cannon-fodder for critics, garnering one or two-star reviews – but this has actually had some thought put into it. It dispenses with any ideas of a more family-friendly commercial approach like Sly Stallone’s 1995 attempt, as Karl Urban (The Chronicles of Riddick) dons the helmet, and takes the film back to its gritty violent roots made famous in the

classic 2000 AD comic books. In Mega City the only law are the ‘Judges’, who have the power to become judge, jury and executioner on the spot as criminals rule the streets. But when Dredd – and young psychic rookie Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) – try to take on drug gang leader Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), she locks the crime-fighting duo in her

tower block, and they have to fight her army to the top of the building to make it out alive. And cleverly, it’s the drug epidemic she’s controlling – a mind-altering substance called ‘Slo-Mo’– that sets up some sensational use of special effects, and coupled with solid performances, made this one of the biggest movie surprises of last year.

TYLER IS SKYBOUND! eterborough’s fast developing its own version of what was known as Hollywood’s ‘Brat Pack’ with a host of young guns all helping put the city on the map. From Peterborough’s Aston Merrygold in his hugely successful boy band JLS, to Louis Smith the Eye gymnast turned dancefloor hottie in Strictly, and Werrington’s own Luke Pasqualino from Skins who’s now making movies, these young men from the city are making their mark… and interestingly are all connected.

P Photo: Peterborough Athletics Club

So add to the pack one Tyler Fayose, an actor from Sawtry who’s often modelled for ESP who’s now waiting for the release of his first film this year – Skybound!

“I do get to do some stunts and action sequences which was really exciting but tough – it’s like doing a workout every day.” Although Tyler keeps in shape down the gym these days in his younger days he was actually a talented and successful runner with PAC so what steered him from sport to acting? “I still have that sporting dream inside me, but I think I realised that in athletics you’ve really got to be the best of the best to get anywhere. The main issue was time though, you have to commit fully and I just couldn’t.” Since basing himself in London Tyler’s appeared in various productions including a starring role in Barbarians, set in the 70s, which was revived on stage after 21 years to critical acclaim. “I’m glad I’ve done theatre,” says Tyler, “but in the long run film and TV parts will give me more options. I love both mediums.

It’s exciting times for this 25-year-old as since wrapping on the movie he’s seen more film auditions come thick and fast so we reckon he’s the face to watch! Skybound is a German production set in America. It’s a 90 minute thriller about five air passengers unable to land after a gigantic disaster happens on the ground. It stars Scarlett Byrne (Harry Potter) and Morten Suurballe (The Killing) as well as Tyler of course and is currently in post production. Needless to say there’s a buzz amongst his family and friends eager for a release date (and us!) and while Tyler can’t reveal too much he admits it was an incredible experience – “It was amazing to see the amount of work and number of people involved in the filming process. In the theatre it’s about learning your lines, but some people in the film just picked them up on the day as it’s all filmed out of sequence which is pretty strange and takes a bit of getting used to.

It’s fantastic to see more and more talent coming out of the city and fascinating that these guys all seem to know each other. Tyler met Aston from JLS at Peterborough Regional College and ended up sharing a flat briefly in London and was introduced to Louis Smith on a night out. He knew actor Luke Pasqualino (who’s recently seen the release of his movie Love Bite) from his time working and performing at the Key Theatre. All in all we reckon the ‘Boro Pack’ is shaping up nicely! You can next catch Tyler on stage in a one night only show called Family at the Cockpit Theatre in London on January 17. Then it’s a waiting game for the release of Skybound – we can’t wait.

Photo: Sokari Higgwe, www.sokari.eu

Tyler may also be a familiar face from his time at the Key Theatre and Peterborough Regional College where he studied drama, but also from his other life as a star of the track with Peterborough Athletics Club (PAC). Since then he’s been doing various theatre shows in London but has now stepped off the stage and in front of the movie cameras.

“However Skybound turns out, just to have a film released is amazing, I’m really excited to see it. I’ll have to watch it a few times though I’m sure as I’ll be analysing it for different things. I can’t wait.”

HUNGRY HORSE SPECIAL DEAL

If you’re looking for reasons to be cheerful in 2013 we think the arrival of Carluccios in the city centre should certainly strike a chord with diners.

The Halcyon Hungry Horse in Netherton doesn’t scrimp on the portions but they are scrimping on the price this month. You can enjoy four mains and four desserts from a select menu on Saturdays for under £25 – sounds like a session out with your mates to us so why not give it a go? Call 01733 263801 for more details.

It’s been wonderful to see the city’s dining out scene develop over the last few years with much of it centring around the revitalised Cathedral Square area and this is one more addition that, come summer in particular, should help add diversity to Peterborough’s nightlife. Sam Eastwood, centre director at Queensgate agrees – “The opening of Carluccio’s will significantly enhance and complement the growing catering experience around Cathedral Square which has proved so popular with city visitors. It will be the ideal destination for an Italian breakfast through to postwork drinks and leisurely meals, as well as offering retail therapy for food lovers.” From early February, you can enjoy genuine homemade Italian food in relaxed surroundings, with the arrival of this long awaited restaurant and deli in the former Harriet’s Tearooms building. The restaurant will be the ideal destination for breakfast, coffee and pastries, a light lunch, three-course meal with wine or even a little retail therapy. Simon Kossoff, CEO of Carluccio’s, told ESP – "We have been keen to open in Peterborough for a number of years now and are delighted to have finally found the right site for us. The city has a lively restaurant scene and a thriving Italian community, so we're really excited to be here." So what can we expect from Carluccio’s? Well, we’re told that by using the freshest seasonal ingredients, the varied restaurant menu will offer something for everyone. You can look forward to a satisfying selection of appetising Italian dishes, from delicious antipasti and fresh handmade pasta, to seasonal fish, meat and vegetarian mains plus decadent desserts. As well as great quality, authentic Italian food, Carluccio’s prides itself on its sensible prices, with two courses costing as little as £15. We can’t wait to give it a try! Of course the other exciting part of the mix is the food shop and deli. Carluccio’s deli will be brimming with freshly made dishes available for lunch on-the-go, including tasty ciabatta sandwiches, Piadina (Italian flat bread), light salads and sweet treats. Head to the food shop to browse shelves bursting with beautifully packaged Italian products, many sourced direct from small artisan producers in Italy, including oil, wines, coffee, biscuits, pastas, polenta, rice, antipasti, sauces and handmade chocolates.

HEALTH & VITALITY with Karen Devine

karen.devine@espmag.co.uk

ESP’s local expert in nutrition, Karen Devine, is here to help your rediscover your vitality to take on the world this year… Looking for more vitality, get up and go, energy or that spark you once had? I’m sure most of us would like a little more as we experience the all too common feelings of low mood, lack of motivation, low energy, feeling sluggish and less enthusiasm in life. If you want to release the energy potential that’s in there somewhere then a little work on your part may just help you find it. Generating more vitality is not just about the foods we eat but also the thoughts we think, the feelings we send out as our mind and body is interconnected so we need to nurture it all. As 2013 gets underway why not give yourself a break from all the self sabotage, the limiting beliefs and the many excuses you make NOT to change or NOT to make the effort with your life? Why not start by entertaining some or all of the following… 1. Make 2013 a year to commit to yourself. That doesn’t mean we become selfish and work from the ‘ego’. What it does mean is that you make time to nurture your own body, mind and spirit. Take time out for you, start eating some healthy foods, limit time with people that drain you, make some goals for short, mid or long term. Begin to like yourself a bit more – after all YOU have to live with yourself the longest. 2. Get a vision of what you would like to be, do or have in your life. If goal setting is hard because you don’t know, then this is your stating point. Many people don’t know or have a wishy washy idea but until you get ‘CLEAR’ on what it is you want to be, do or have, you’ll keep missing out. Take some time to ask yourself what it is you’d really like to see, change or attract into your life. Write it down when it comes up, the more you do this the clearer you become. 3. Clean up your home, office, home, STOP hoarding for the day you might need X,Y and Z again, if you haven’t worn, used it or read it in years then (unless it’s sentimental) auction it, or give it away. Do you have old remnants of a past love? If it gives you happy feelings to see it then great but if you feel a kick in the guts each time, then it’s definitely time to get it out of your life!

4. Find your energy drainers! We all have people in our life that we love dearly but can take a lot from us, so make sure you’re taking time out for you to restock, and replenish each time. If this is a significant relationship in your life then seek help to talk the issues through. You might have old friends, acquaintances or an old relationship that’s had your attention for too long and it may be time to let them go. 5. How’s your health? Bloated, anaemic, low in nutrients, frequent infections, low blood sugar, headaches, migraines, indigestion? Then it’s time to address these and get your chemistry back into balance. 6. Eat something healthy each day, (lots if you can), we have a body to give our spirit a home for a while, when we feed it junk we feel the same, when you feed it nourishment and remove dead, non nutritious foods and replace with live fresh foods, low antigens, healthy proteins/fats and fresh water, maybe some fresh green juices then my oh my are you going to feel more alive than you have in a while! 7. Move your body each day, get on your bike, walk, do yoga, stretching, go to the gym, whatever that means for you then work up to 20-30mins at least three times a week and you’re going to feel much better. 8. Turn the TV off once in a while, it’s hard to believe that you could be sitting in front of it for 30 hours a week or more and not even realise you’re doing it! Just think, by cutting in half the time spent watching the box could mean extra hours for you to work on you, which could be writing your goals each day, meditating on them, meeting up with someone who makes you feel great, exercising, taking up a hobby or whatever else you wanted to do but never feel you get the time. 9. Meditation – hard for most of us to begin with as we are so much in our heads. Start by finding a guided meditation tape, even if it’s only five minutes long, it’s like a muscle, the more you work it the better it gets. Twenty years ago I took a three year course in meditation, believe me if I can shut out the dibble in my head I know you can too! 10. Watch your thoughts. Of course you’re not going to be able to stop them all but begin to be aware of the types of thoughts you have running like a stuck record, such as – I am no good, this will never happen for me, I’m not loveable, I’m too fat, I’m too unfit, I’m too old, ugly – or whatever soul destroying thoughts you have on auto-play. You are so worth the effort so make a plan for your life and refuse to listen to your own excuses! Karen www.karendevine.co.uk

roCk up iN red for NatioNaL heart moNth Heart Disease is the UK’s single biggest killer; it kills one in six men and one in nine women making it responsible for 80,000 deaths in the UK alone each year! On Friday February 1, the British Heart Foundation are asking you, the great British public, to pay £2 and Rock Up In Red to help fight against Heart Disease.

aBsiNthe makes the heart grow foNder... Or in this case your hands feel softer! Consumed enough alcohol over the festive period to last you a lifetime? Then just stick to The Body Shop’s new Absinthe Hand Care Collection – moisture so pure it should be banned!

So, you could paint your nails red, wear a red tie or go all out and rock up in a head to toe red outfit! Whatever you do, the funds that you raise will go directly towards vital research, support and care for those suffering with heart and circulatory disease. Make sure you encourage friends, family and colleagues to take part and wear something, anything RED and make a heartfelt statement for your loved ones.

This new, purifying hand care range is infused with refreshing and moisturising botanical ingredients, including absinthe extract, and is designed to banish dry skin and bad odours, leaving you with clean, refreshed and beautifully moisturised hands. You’ll be pleased to hear that the new Body Shop range is not as potent as the drink itself and actually has a mesmerising fragrance. The Absinthe Purifying Hand Cream (RRP £5/£10) is delightfully light, leaving your hands refreshed, clean and odour free. Suitable for all skin types, apply it whenever hands feel in need of a shot of moisture. Perfect for on your desk at work or in your handbag. Or if it’s perfectly purified hands you’re after without the need for water, try the Purifying Hand Gel, RRP £2.50. Simply apply to hands and allow to dry.

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…

A great time was had by everyone including some people who would’ve gone home very sunburnt! Congratulations to all involved in the organisation, and they’ve already announced initial plans for this year (see elsewhere on this page for details) Next the Beer Festival, and for me the Saturday night brought a cracking performance from The

Something to look forward to in January will be the return of The Smyths to The Met Lounge on Saturday January 19. The band claim to be the undisputed Number 1 tribute to Manchester’s legendary band The Smiths. Although fellow Manchester indie band, Stone Roses reformed in 2012 for some very successful gigs, it’s thought unlikely that Morrisey and The Smiths will be doing the same, so it’s no surprise that The Smyths have gained an impressive following from

The Willow Festival will be back in 2013 but moves to July 12/13/14 and early plans show that it’ll be even bigger than last year after being supported by over 50,000 people.

Of course, the highlight of 2012 has to be the rebirth of The Willow Festival. It was launched early in the year after a nine year break. The festival had the full support of Peterborough City Council and a number of very generous sponsors. The weather was perfect and the event featured well over 100 bands playing on the Embankment. There was the added bonus of a comedy tent and other art forms at the event and amongst others, I remember seeing a great evening performance from Lloyd Watson and a fabulous Bowie set from Aladdinsane on the main stage.

Nuggets. Their whole act is based on 60’s music, so they were an ideal support for the Fab Beatles who headlined that evening. The Nuggets just stole the night with an electric performance full of energy and showmanship which had thousands of revellers singing, jumping and spilling beer all around the main music tent. Incidentally, it was very pleasing to see that the organisers reverted to the horseshoe shape for the tents with the music tent in the middle. Later in the year I saw Wilko Johnson and a very impressive up and coming guitarist, Virgil Mcmahon, at Stamford Corn Exchange and it’s pleasing to see the venue has some great shows booked for 2013. And I must give a mention to the very talented musicians who performed together for three nights only at the Emcee Productions 70s show at The Cresset. They provided the live backing for a show full of talented singers and dancers. They formed together from local groups White Spirit, Aladdinsane, Citizen Smith, and band members Simon, Ken, Dan, Carlos and Russ constantly rehearsed 25 numbers for the show and performed them superbly (and they put up with my jokes for all four performances). It just shows the commitment and professionalism of local musicians. To all local musicians and venues thank you very much for bringing live music to us and on behalf of all your customers Happy New Year!

Smiths devotees themselves – always the hardest people to win over! The Smyths have made yearly appearances at The Met and the last three have sold out each time so I’d suggest early booking. You can buy tickets from www.ticketweb.co.uk. Alternatively book over the phone by credit/debit card on 01733 566100 or from Met reception during normal weekend opening times.

Organiser Mark Ringer told ESP – “For 2013, we are currently looking at securing new infrastructure, indeed we are currently in negotiations over bringing in some of the world’s largest outdoor structures to the Embankment in order to give The Willow Festival bands the very best areas to perform from. We’re planning an acoustic stage this

Last year was a great year for local music. We saw more exciting bands surfacing with a wider variety of music, and on balance, I think we saw an increase in venues for live music.

As we look towards 2013, I’m very pleased to see another venue planning regular live music during the new year. Ebeneezers in Woodston, which has always been strong on live entertainment, has announced plans to have live bands on Fridays. They’ve got together with local band and concert promoter, Terry Naraine to bring ‘Friday Nights Live 2013’ to Ebeneezers. The aim is to bring all different types of bands, rock, pop, punk, new wave, indie, blues, reggae, soul, ska, and are already booked up to mid 2013. It starts on Friday January 11 with The Pulse, Friday January 18 The More I See and Friday January 25 Noisey Neighbours. Whilst February Fridays brings Lloyd Watson, Filthy Lucre, Rocket’57, and The Rocket Dogs. Sounds very worthwhile considering. If you want more info contact Ebeneezers, and send band enquiries to terrynaraine@ntlworld.com

time too, and we aim to add 30 solo acts to our current 123 band spots. “We have more sponsors than ever and strong support again. The BBC will again be supporting us, as will Peterborough City Council... along with ESP.”

The organisers are always keen to hear enquiries from bands, volunteers, sponsors and concessions and they can be reached at info@willowfestival.org.uk. There’ll be plenty more info on The Willow Festival to come in forthcoming editions of ESP Magazine so watch this space.

This month Andy grills local musician

For my profile on talented city musicians this time I catch up with an old pal who I first met around about 1987 and he’s been in and around my social life ever since. You’ll often see Nick Smith on stage with various bands of various genres, bass tucked under his armpit, wrist cocked at an unhealthy angle and a range of faces from the ridiculous to the sublime.

andy.slater@espmag.co.uk

Andy Slater

Nick Smith...

Hession that changed his career in the music business. “Without Steve I probably wouldn’t be a professional, he got me lots of gigs, corporate stuff, theatre gigs and got me playing at that level.” Steve is still the musical director

t’s a sight you will have seen around the city for an age, Nick first started doing the circuit around 1983 winning a talent contest at Farcet club that very year – “We won £25, I spent my share on balsa wood, I was into building model gliders then!” – fortunately he’s moved on from that boyhood hobby.

I

Nick first picked up a guitar in his kitchen at home where his dad, another fine Peterborough musician, rehearsed with the Mick Lemmon band. “I used to watch them and think, that’s so cool I want to do that,” he told me. Picking up his dad’s Fender Strat he quickly started knocking out bass lines and the idea of guitar turned into bass guitar.

Sleek carried on till 1985 when Nick teamed up with his father again in the Mick Lemmon Band with whom he played for seven years. “This was my real apprenticeship playing to large audiences,” says Nick, “it was my induction to rock ‘n’ roll.” Nick left the band in 1992 but the band carried on until this year. Nick had been working as a Saturday boy in Music Village during this time and it was a chance meeting with Steve

Nick has played with a plethora of bands and for me to single any one or two out would be unfair on the rest but with a hint of melancholy Nick reminisces

Jet Harris and Nick

“I used to jam with Dad to old Shadows stuff, all sorts of old rock ‘n’ roll really,” Nick explains. “He would show me a few things and would just jam – it was great!”

Sleek, Nick’s first band Photos: Paul Woodlock

School beckoned just as he bought his first bass and at Deacons he teamed up with drummer Andy Clifton who became a life long collaborator and friend. They were joined by the now renowned guitarist Jem Watson and Steve Meadwell to form Sleek the band that won the balsa wood for Nick!

yeah Steve’s been good to have around.”

“If we had not been so lazy we could’ve been big, Britain’s Red Hot Chilli Peppers.” Band members Kev Brown, Luke Dixon and the exquisitely named Harald Von Falkenstein rocked a biker do at Cadwell Park – “18,000 people it was magic, so were the band!” Fast forward a few years, a multitude of bass guitars – “I don’t know, lots of them” – two of which were owned previously by one of his bass heroes (Mark King of Level 42, which he paid silly money for but now reside in Paris with another collector) and Nick’s now playing with Jet Harris of The Shadows. “It all came about playing in a Shadows tribute band The Shadowers with Alan Jones The Shadows’ bass player. We got invited to play at Shadow Mania and Jet got up and played with us. It was great because that’s where I started out, playing rock ‘n’ roll in the kitchen with my Dad, Stuart.” Nick will play until his hands can no longer hold or pluck, so any ambitions left to fulfil? Well? “Maybe a duet with another bass hero of mine Colin Hodgkinson, but he is a busy man so we’ll see...”

“We got invited to play at Shadow Mania and Jet got up and played with us.” at the Key Theatre and whilst you read this Nick will be doing his 8th Panto – “It’s great , it’s like a working holiday,

about Urban Surf – “We were great,” he says with a modesty his nature allows.

Nick Smith is an affable man always ready with a comic voice and smile that exudes warmth. He’s as happy playing with funksters Groove Cartel as he is panto as he is with The Influence knocking out rock covers in one of his (and mine) favourite pubs The Swiss Cottage. That’s what makes him a special kind of guy, at ease with himself and with everyone else, add to that his immense talent and you start to understand why I, and many others feel blessed to have him around.
