THE BEAR NECESSITIES Every year we follow the bear round Whittlesey for the town’s biggest social event. This year’s Straw Bear Festival on January 9, 10 and 11 is the 36th and it’s still going strong. In the midst of an otherwise boring January when you’re skint and looking forward to the summer this annual event is a real mood lifter. The ‘bear’ is paraded around the town whatever the weather, the town centre’s packed with musicians and dancers and the pubs are heaving!

Photos: Chris Brudenell

It’s a great atmosphere and as ever kicks off with a concert on the Friday night with the parade on Saturday followed by an evening barn dance. Then on Sunday from noon there’s a 2 hour music and dance session followed by the bear burning (no cuddly creatures or humans are harmed!) at Sir Harry Smith School at 2.30pm. The main parade procession kicks off at 10.30am from the Manor Leisure so make sure you tag along. For dance and concert tickets please ring 07857 357970.

It’s been a great year for Nene Park with the new Lakeside waterpsorts centre and café getting off to a good start but this fabulous park is just as lovely during the winter months. Something that will be well worth a look while you’re out for a walk is the new outdoor exhibition showcasing the Wildlife and Landscape of Nene Park at Roman Point in Ferry Meadows. All the photos were taken in Nene Park and were submitted by Nene Park visitors. It’s a truly stunning collection of images and replaces the previous exhibition of street photographer Chris Porsz's year in the park. By being close to the Visitor Centre it makes the exhibition more accessible so as many people as possible can enjoy the photos so make sure you take a look and get out in the fresh air! www.espmag.co.uk

It starts off with a Service of Commemoration at Peterborough Cathedral at 10.30am on Friday January 30 when dignitaries and local school children dressed in Tudor costume walk from Peterborough Museum to Peterborough Cathedral for a service to commemorate Katharine of Aragon. It’s open to everyone and admission’s free. The service is followed by a Tudor history day for schools.

THE KATHARINE OF ARAGON FESTIVAL History lovers are in for a treat this month as Peterborough celebrates the life of the first wife of Henry VIII, a woman of significant historical importance who was buried at Peterborough Cathedral in 1536.

Alison Weir

This annual festival is a collaboration between Peterborough Cathedral and Peterborough Museum (Vivacity Peterborough) and runs from Friday January 30 – Sunday February 1.

At 2pm there’s a guided tour of Peterborough Cathedral with a focus on the Tudor period (also on Saturday). The tour takes just over an hour and costs £7 per person (£5 concessions) with tickets on 01733 355300 or from the Cathedral Welcome Desk. In the evening at 7.30pm Alison Weir gives an illustrated talk at Peterborough Cathedral on the The Exile of Katharine of Aragon. The renowned historian and novelist will speak about the last years of Katharine of Aragon's life. Banished from court in 1531, Katharine remained in exile and never accepted that Henry had divorced her. She was moved around various houses and eventually died at Kimbolton Castle. The talk will be followed by a Q & A and a book signing. A selection of Alison’s books will be on sale. Tickets are £11 (£5.50 U18) including a free glass of wine or soft drink and are available

from the Cathedral Shop or their events webpage www.peterboroughcathedral.org.uk. The festival continues on Saturday January 31 with a chance to travel back in time to the 1500s with the At Home with the Tudors event (also on Sunday), at Peterborough Museum from 10am–5pm. You can meet Tudor characters such as the Barber Surgeon with his gruesome cures, mind your manners with a Tudor lady, handle arms and armour with soldiers or try period food. Take part in family activities and crafts with a Tudor theme or go on one of the hourly tours to the rarely-seen Tudor cellars. This is a drop-in event, so there's no need to pre-book! Admission is £3.50 adults, £2.50 concessions, £8 families, under 5s and Heritage Pass holders FREE. (Last admission 4pm). Call 01733 864663 or visit www.vivacitypeterborough.com for more info. In the evening there’s music when Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 will be sung by the internationally famed choral group, The Sixteen, along with Peterborough Cathedral choristers, performing one of the most significant collections of sacred music ever written. Tickets are £15 - £30 from the Visitor Information Centre on 01733 452336 or via www.thesixteen.com

CANDLELIT GHOST TOUR @ THE MUSEUM It’s always hard to come up with things to do in January but something that’s a little different and well worth a go are the Museum’s various ghost walks and tours. They’re really well done and don’t cost a bomb so while it’s quieter why not give one a try? They’re held regularly once a month and the next one is on Tuesday January 13. Photo: Emma Bothamley

You get to explore Peterborough Museum and hear its many ghost stories by candlelight, visiting parts of the building not normally open to the public, including their notorious cellars!

10

www.espmag.co.uk

Tours last about 90 minutes. They’re not ideal for kids though or people of a nervous disposition! Tickets are £5 adults, £3 for concessions on 01733 864663 or for further details see www.vivacity-peterborough.com If you’re feeling really brave they even offer the chance to spend the night at Peterborough’s most haunted building – if you dare! The next Ghost Hunts are on Saturday January 24 and then Friday March 27. Tickets to either event are £35 per person.

LUKE’S BACK

IN ACTION There’s always a buzz about a New Year starting but when it kicks off with a new series of The Musketeers starring our very own Peterborough actor Luke Pasqaulino, the excitement’s ramped up several levels! We loved the first series and have been eagerly awaiting Luke’s return to the small screen as swashbuckling hero D'Artagnan.

T

he new series airs on January 2 on BBC One at 9pm and this time it enters a new era. Luke’s been enjoying time back home with his family after filming for several months in Prague but says it’s been another brilliant experience.

Photos: Portraits: BBC/Des Willie, Episode shots: BBC/Dusan Martinek

“It’s been fantastic; I’ve loved it,” says Luke.“Me and the boys get on like a house on fire. It’s great; we have a lot of fun. We just get to be children for twelve hours a day!”

12

“Me and the boys get on like a house on fire...”

We’re always keen to celebrate local talent and Luke is certainly notching up the successes since appearing in Channel 4’s Skins and in particular The Musketeers drama seems to have won him a legion of new fans… maybe it’s that leather outfit getting the girls going?! It’s been a great role for Luke to stretch himself with trying out horse riding, wielding a sword and getting to do some great stunts. This series he says we see his character develop further.

www.espmag.co.uk

“He’s now a fully-fledged Musketeer after being commissioned at the end of series one, so he’s well in there with the boys now. He’s trying to use his head over his heart more now in terms of his hot-headed temper, so he’s come a long way. He’s matured a lot in that sense. I think we just see him much

more of a man now. He’s not just this kind of incredibly skilled child, we see him developing into this Musketeer that he was destined to become.” This time he and the boys will be up against a new and deadly opponent – The Comte De Rochefort, played by Marc Warren and we’re told this is a darker and sexier Musketeers. We can’t wait! Judging by some of the episode shots D'Artagnan gets a snog or two and of course there’s still his relationship with Constance

which Luke says we’ll see a lot more of. “Obviously it’s tricky because she is still married. It’s been very fun to play actually. It wouldn’t be great drama if things went smoothly all the time! Obviously you are going to see hiccups in there but it’s about when they come and how they happen, which is something for the audience to look forward to.” Luke’s proved quite the action hero in the series which has no doubt added to his female fanbase and probably given him some extra cred with the guys too! We can expect plenty more stunts, scraps and banter with his fellow Musketeers (Tom, Howard and Santiago ) in this series and he says they’ve had a real laugh getting back into their swashbuckling ways! “We all got back into the swing of it from the start,” says Luke.“The bootcamp is just as much about us getting back together and getting that camaraderie and banter going between us because that’s what The Musketeers are; they’re just really good mates. It just so happens that we are really good mates, and we have a laugh and giggle. You leave your ego at the

door and you’re all sweating together. No one is better off than anyone else; you’re all pouring sweat and putting a hell of a lot of effort into trying to get to a certain point.” As well as The Musketeers we’re also desperate to see his Sci-Fi movie Snowpiercer which has had rave reviews and sees him star alongside the likes of Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Jamie Bell and Ed Harris. A wrangle over the final cut of the movie, directed by Joon-ho Bong, delayed its release over here but we’re hearing that’s finally being resolved so we hope it’ll be making its way to Showcase… please! Then there’s his forthcoming appearance in the indie LGBT/gay drama called Retake where the team behind it have been hoping to raise funding for the project via online donations. It’s the story of a guy who hires a male prostitute (Luke) to join him on his road trip to the Grand Canyon. Fingers crossed it gets the support it needs. Still only coming up to 25 there’s plenty going on for this former Walton (now Voyager Academy) schoolboy, but for now… it’s all for one, and one for all… now where’s that remote?

MAKE RESOLUTIONS TO KEEP HER

SUGAR RAY LEONARD COMING TO THE SOLSTICE He’s a former world champion boxer who needs no introduction and if you’re going to meet just one master of the ring in your lifetime then you’ll be hard pressed to top Sugar Ray Leonard.

The start of a New Year usually signifies having a clear out and putting life’s administrations in order. For most of us this process is made all the more determined by labelling resolutions to some of the priority achievements we want to meet. These might include making a career change, losing some waistline Christmas timber or simply making more time for your loved one. Research tells us that the latter example is a resolution we should take very seriously indeed, as the number of relationship break-ups peak in January.

There are only a handful of tickets left to see this legendary fighter talk about his boxing career at The Solstice on Wednesday March 18. Promoter Kevin Sanders has already brought other champions from the same golden era of boxing to the city and after Hagler, Duran and Hearns the best has been left until now. Boxing fans shouldn’t miss this one. For tickets to the dinner and key note event, call Kevin on 07872 601467.

Make a compromise. The issue: You’re debating ownership of the TV remote. Solution: Give in to her but remove the batteries when she’s not looking.

That’s why I’m pleased to announce Sycamore Mini in Werrington as my new sponsors. It means I continue to be supported by the iconic BMW brand but it’s going to be on four wheels instead of two.

Be more affectionate. The issue: You’ve stupidly agreed that her bum looks big in her new dress. Solution: Just say sorry. Apology is a form of affection, right? The issue: She wants to join your five-a-side football team. Solution: Invite her to training and play her in goal.

Praise her. The issue: You haven’t noticed she’s lost weight. Solution: Commend her by buying her a cake.

Be kind. The issue: You’ve bought a packet of Rolos and didn’t think to buy her a treat. Solution: Remember to offer her your last Rolo.

Be spontaneous. The issue: She’s bored of staying in on a Saturday night. Solution: Take her to the pub, watch Match of the Day together and treat her to a naan sandwich on the way home.

And so the end of an era has arrived. In the five years of Balderston Man About Town sponsorship I’ve seen sales manager TJ’s hair turn from grey to white and Dave (more recently) bidding to star as Evel Knievel in a movie about the daredevil’s battle with bikes. I’ve also come to appreciate what an excellent motorcycle manufacturer BMW is. Every bike they produce has quality stamped all over it and although I’m not ready to trade my Triumph in just yet I’m certainly tempted to go German when I do.

So, if you’re a man who wants to ensure you’re not traded in during the January sales, make a resolution to appreciate her more by following these simple steps.

Play together.

What a load of rubbish, I didn’t understand it but somehow it’s addictive. PEP’S LOCAL HEROES:

KEITH DALTON

BACK IN THE DAY... When I think of local radio like it used to be I’m reminded of creative programming, positive stories and presenters who didn’t always need their egos inflating but always put the good of our city first. ESP’s very own Live Music columnist Keith Dalton was one of those presenters. He belonged to an era of radio that was ground-breaking, impulsive and infectious. There was never an agenda with Keith, his style wasn’t about provoking reaction and neither was his delivery mundane or mechanical.

Keith also has a dry sense of humour that came across with the right balance on radio. His occasional oneliners and quick-wittedness were timed with perfection and never offended. His was the time of ‘entertainment radio’ instead of today’s ‘issues radio’.

It must be three or four years since the last officially organised party took place on Cathedral Square but back in the day there was always a gathering in front of the Guildhall where the only organising to worry about was to be there in time for midnight. Last month I reminisced about what it was like for me hitting the town way back when on Christmas Eve. New Year’s Eve was just as special but in a different way. To start with many of our regular haunts would charge for admission and put on a DJ and perhaps throw in a glass of Bucks Fizz on entry.

Today’s ‘local’ radio is either engineered to the point of making you cringe or it’s about getting on a soapbox about a subject that presenters pretend they care about. Keith’s always had the best interests of people at heart without having to shout the loudest. He’d be genuinely engaged with his guests and had a natural knack of being able to bring the best out of his interviews by not pretending to be anyone else but just Keith. One of his strengths was being a good listener – the voice of his guest was more important than his own.

NEW YEAR’S EVE IN THE SQUARE

With me he was helped by the fact I can laugh at myself and be laughed at, which always gave him ammunition to mock me in a playful manner. Sharing our passion for the Rolling Stones was also the perfect excuse to play Gimmie Shelter each time I was on. Better still, our weekly chats were always live (as were his shows) and this meant for authentic radio.

Keith genuinely enjoyed being a radio presenter and was at his best when in the company of guests. At Lite FM Keith established a week long schedule of regular guests that would come in and chat with him for about half an hour a day.

No subject was off the radar, as we both have opinions about everything – especially football. Keith stitched me up good and proper with a call from someone pretending to be a van salesman the day after Holland beat Italy in Euro 2008. The caller kept going on about the different model of vans he had for sale and I didn’t catch on until he reeled off his most popular selling models the Van Nistelrooy and Van Bronckhorst (two of the scorers against Italy). Enough said about that one.

I was one of those lucky guests representing ESP. We’d never plan what was going to be discussed between us before the ‘on air’ light came on (although I’m sure Keith always had an idea) but you wouldn’t have known.

Today, I don’t see Keith as much as I’d like to and I need to make more of an effort like he did when showing up at my surprise birthday gathering earlier this year. The banter was still there, just the microphones were missing. Happy New Year Keith.

The admission charge was an obvious money maker for what was effectively the same experience a week before but instead of a CD, music would blare out from a set of decks. And the fear of missing out meant you’d end up paying the tenner or more to enter and pick up conversations you’d had with your extended townie family on Christmas Eve. If you were single on New Year’s Eve then the world was your oyster. I still don’t know the reason for it and couldn’t tell you if it goes on today (I’m retired), but if your luck was in then you’d end up having several snogs with different people on Cathedral Square just after midnight. Basically, New Year’s Eve after midnight was a snog fest. But before your tonsils got a workout we’d hit a couple of bars (the free entry ones) and then pay to be in the one everybody else was heading for before moving onto the Square. Seeing the New Year in at a nightclub was never a consideration because no matter how cold it was outside (it never

seemed to rain) tradition called for revellers in their thousands to gather on the Square in a celebratory and trouble free manner. It was like a ritual and at around 11.45pm townies would vacate bars and head over there in high spirits with the weekend family they wanted to see in the New Year with. Everyone was on a natural high and wanted to spend the final part of the evening meeting up with others from the scene in a united celebration of the year that was and the year that was going to be. Only once did I venture out of town (Nottingham) on New Year’s Eve and it was – apart from the three lads I went with – the emptiest feeling I’d ever had on December 31. We were in a heaving club with a great vibe but I didn’t know anyone. It felt like I had nothing in common with them, there was no connection and I was completely detached wondering what the celebrations were like back home. This is why I never understood why some people on the scene could properly enjoy New Year’s Eve in another city after spending every weekend having banter in Peterborough to then isolate themselves in unfamiliar surroundings on the biggest night of the year. New Year’s Eve on the Square for me and the rest of the leather jacket parade I hung out with was always about trying to get off with the girl you’d had your eye on for weeks before. Invariably our success rate was high and I’m pleased to say many a relationship was spawned from a saliva swapping game of tonsil tennis beneath the clock that struck midnight on our beautiful Guildhall. www.espmag.co.uk

Local filmmakers It’s not all about Hollywood when it comes to making movies. ESP’s Mikey Clarke has recently debuted his own short film and finds Peterborough seems to be full of filmmaking enthusiasts keen to share their skills.

ESP Reporter Turns Filmmaker

Y

ou may have seen my numerous online shameless plugs (sorry about those), as I recently debuted my first Short Film. The movie is called Kelly Chambers and tells the story of a counsellor who struggles with a personal battle – whether or not to seek revenge on one of her own patients. The video can be seen in full on the ESP website, but be warned – it contains scenes that some may find distressing. With this project being a learning curve for me, I‘m not expecting a call from Spielberg any time soon. Before filming, I called upon a lot of local people to get some advice. It turns out I was spoilt for choice on the number of filmmaking experts in the area. There’s so much talent in Peterborough! Below is just a few of the local filmmakers I’ve discovered and their personal advice for budding actors, writers and filmmakers. Mikey Clarke

Lewis Saunderson Lewis trained at the prestigious East 15 Acting School and graduated in 2008 with a BA (Hons) Degree in Acting. He's since been building up a healthy body of professional work in front of the camera.

Another one of his movies, Through The Lens, has secured a distribution deal by MCTV, and Hollywood based Continuum Motion Pictures, through Entertainment One, via platforms such as iTunes, Amazon Prime, Google Play, Xbox, PlayStation and more – released this month. It's a Sci-Fi thriller set in the near future where he plays the lead role!

One of his upcoming movies, The Lost Choices, has secured a major distribution deal and will be making its UK release soon for the world to see. He plays the role of Jimmy in this gritty, hard-hitting film starring opposite Mark Wingett (The Bill, Snow White and the Huntsman and cult hit Quadrophenia) who plays his on-screen Dad. The Lost Choices studies the effects of abuse in several forms with three lives. The film explores the destructive relationships between peers and the family.

Lewis' advice to anyone who has a keen interest to break into the film industry, in front of the camera, is to stay focused on your goal and remain passionate at all times. He told me that if you’re hardworking, reliable, creative and willing to take risks and make sacrifices people will want to work with you. In his opinion he feels that when you first start out in the industry you have to be willing to work hard for not very much until you build your name, reputation and get a foot in the door. Most importantly, you have to love

what you do and put your heart and soul into every project, otherwise you’ll not survive in such a tough, competitive and risky industry.

Mitch Brewster

Martin Tempest

Mitch set up Mitchell Brewster Media after being awarded funding from The Princes Trust.

Martin started his career at the famous Italia Conti Stage School in London. It was not long before he was cast in a lead role as the Artful Dodger in the 1984 film of Oliver Twist starring George C Scott as Fagin. Straight after the film he landed another lead role as Robin Randall in a TV series called The Guardians. It was this film where he was drawn to the directing side of films. In those days there weren’t many computers but once editing and technology moved on, he studied it at the Peterborough Media Centre which was run by Clifton Stewart. It was here where he started to learn the many aspects of post-production. Over the years he’s been backed by several companies such as EM Media, Creative England and the BFI which have funded various projects. The most famous of these was the 2012 film which involved over 100 local young people making a feature film entitled The Harbinger, which was backed by the BFI.

(Cinematographer)

(Actor/Director)

As a Cinematographer, he’s in charge of the camera and lighting crews working on a film, and is responsible for achieving artistic results. Mitch also films regularly for ESP Magazine, and was one of the cameramen for my short film Kelly Chambers. He also regularly films weddings, celebrity interviews and music videos. Mitch’s advice for budding Cinematographers is to know exactly what you want from your film. He explained that it’s important to know scene for scene how you’re going to film before the day of filming. Even if you’re terrible at drawing, creating a story-board can be extremely useful. Finally, network! Get to know other people in the area doing what you want to do. Learn from them and take their advice – just don’t lose your own signature filming style.

David Proud (Writer/Director/Actor)

David Proud is a writer, actor and director. His first professional acting role was as a wheelchair basketball player in the children's TV series Desperados. David made history becoming the first regular disabled cast member in the BBC soap EastEnders, and has since been involved in numerous television shows and films – behind and in front of the camera. David’s advice for aspiring writers is to send out scripts to either BBC Film, Film 4 and the BFI – the only three companies you can approach without an agent with a film idea in the hope of getting it developed. The local filmmaker is lucky to have one of his ideas in development with BBC Film at the moment – so he knows what he’s talking about! David explained that it’s important to write and make as many short films as you can and learn by your mistakes. Always get someone to proof read and always do a read through with your actors before filming. For those wanting to take writing really seriously, he suggests buying a brilliant book entitled Into the Woods by John Yorke. The writer is David’s old boss at EastEnders and was the Head of Drama. David promises that it is the only book on screenwriting you’ll ever need. Finally, I was told to never stop telling stories, create characters with flaws and take the viewer on a journey they might not be expecting.

Ross Strowthers (Scriptwriter)

Ross Strowthers goes by the stage-name of ‘Rhags’ which (in his words) was, “given to me for tearing up mics with real lyrics that make people think about the problems in society.” He crossed over from music to film when he realised how much fun and how interesting it was making music videos – one being Uncaged, which charted on Channel AKA.

Martin is most proud of his film entitled Treasure Camp, which won The International Christian Youth Film Festival in 2009 (based in Wales). The patron of this film festival just so happened to be Anthony Hopkins. Over 300 films entered across the world! Not only did Martin and his team win best feature film, but they also won Best of the Festival out of all 300 films. The local filmmaker recently met up with Film Producer, Jason Burrows. The two of them are working on a short film which will be supported by a London film company. The short is a stepping stone for a larger feature film which Jason and Martin hope to take to a couple of colleagues they know who will hopefully help it become a major feature. Martin’s advice for anyone wanting to become a Director is to keep in mind that you are only as good as what you make. So, the first thing you need to do is make a short good-quality film showing how creative and how talented your work can be. But remember, story is key! Another good piece of advice from him is to network, get involved, talk to people, push yourself and have the confidence to do so. People in the industry are always impressed by whatever they watch visually, and if you're the one who has created that masterpiece then you will definitely get noticed.

Ross has teamed up with the Producer/Director, Leon Mitchell – an old school friend of his. The two of them run a company called New Estate Films. They had massive success with their first film Rhago Boy, which premiered at the Key Theatre selling out every seat. Ross and Leon are now working on their second film, Zombies 'N' Tha Hood, which is an urban comedy which Ross promises will have people from all ages laughing out loud. And look out for local celeb, Louis Smith, who will be making a cameo – possibly alongside Keith Lemon so I’m told. This particular filmmaker’s advice to anyone wanting to make their own short would be… be patient! The writing, filming and editing is a lengthy journey and you must stay focused and passionate throughout.

The project’s being run by Open City, a brand new initiative that’s bringing together Peterborough’s creative thinkers and tech whizzes in order to create some pretty cool technology to solve some of the city’s big challenges. Peterborough DNA, the programme shaping a smarter, more sustainable city, is working with volunteers from local communities to

demonstrate how projects like Open City can help create urban areas of the future. Some of the features planned for the screen include a Citizen’s Vote option, interactive treasure hunts for tourists and locals, a ‘What’s On’ page where users can find out about events happening across the city, and of course, a selfie camera! In November last year, developers, designers, photographers and user experience professionals met for the city’s first ‘Hackathon’ (pictured) at Peterborough Cathedral where they worked together over 24 hours to build the software for the screen. The final design stages are now underway and content’s being gathered in preparation for the screen’s launch in April.

Helena Hansen-Fure, project officer for Open City told ESP – “What’s unique about the Open City project is that it’s completely grass-roots led. We’ve got some extremely talented individuals on board who are dedicating their time to creating solutions that make Peterborough a better place to work and live. We’re now looking forward to the launch of the screen, and hopefully many more projects to come.” Peterborough DNA is running the project in partnership with Opportunity Peterborough, Peterborough City Council and a number of leading local digital, design, and social media companies including BGL Group’s comparethemarket.com. City photographer gives Luton airport a makeover. We’ve long celebrated the work of local street photographer Chris Porsz who’s been capturing images of Peterborough since the 70s.

Chris told ESP – “I’ve walked miles across European capitals and London trying to capture something quirky to make passengers do a double take and smile as they walk down the corridors. I’m not sure how the London design agency knew of me but as a very minor amateur photographer who dabbles at it I was shocked but delighted to be commissioned for such an important project, so I gave it my all.”

T

he ‘paramedic paparazzo’ as he’s known, as his ‘real’ job is as a paramedic, has captured many familiar faces from the city over the years in what started out as a hobby. His wonderfully candid images have been featured in the Peterborough Telegraph and the national press as well as ESP and other media after he managed to recreate several reunions, brining together some of the characters from his photos and recreating their pose. It’s been great to see Chris recognised with exhibitions in Queensgate Shopping Centre, the City Gallery at the Museum and at Ferry Meadows. Now his photography has captured the interest of none other than Luton airport who’ve commissioned him to take a series of photos to adorn the walls as part of a big makeover and they’ll be on display for the next five years.

24

www.espmag.co.uk

Chris has spent hours in various European cities for the commission capturing the images, seen here, but stuck to his signature style. “I imagined it was Peterborough but on a grander scale and I used my style of candid photography and engagement with complete strangers. I’m always looking for comical situations and for people who stand out from the crowd. “I was truly inspired by this change of scenery and it really got my creative juices going to try and capture iconic landmarks that have been photographed millions of times but in a different way.” Chris is now busy putting together a second book of reunion images complete with stories about what happened to the characters he snapped all those years ago. In the meantime when you next nip off on your hols from Luton airport make sure you take a look at his incredible set of images. View more of Chris’ work on www.chrisporsz.com.

There’s a new girl on the block ready to spin that red chair and choose some fresh singing talent. Singer Rita Ora is joining the boys on The Voice…

W

Known for her sense of style as well as her music there’s no stopping this girl and 2015 will see the release of Rita’s second album as well as cameo roles in two of the year’s big film releases, Fifty Shades Of Grey and South Paw. But first she’s been settling into that famous spinning red chair and says she’s been revelling in her latest challenge alongside the legend that is Sir Tom Jones, will.i.am and Ricky Wilson. “I think it’s so interesting learning about people and learning about myself and being in the show that is so powerful for one person. I mean if I can help one person, why wouldn’t I? That’s what this show is about. I love it. “Will.i.am was actually the person who convinced me to do the show. We’ve been close friends for a while and I was like, ‘Yo! They’ve asked me to do The Voice and I don’t really know what to do?’ And Will.i.am said: ‘If you do do it you are going to give these people something’. It took me to understand that I do have a voice and I can use it to help people.

hen it comes to being a qualified judge on BBC show The Voice, Rita Ora has her credentials lined up. She’s one of the UK’s most successful female artists with her debut album, Ora, hitting number one in the UK and giving her four number-one singles R.I.P and How We Do (Party), Hot Right Now with DJ Fresh and I Will Never Let You Down. Her most recent release, as a featured vocalist on Iggy Azelea’s Black Widow hit the top three on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Rita admits that when she first signed up she did have a few reservations – “When I first said yes, I thought ‘Ooh my God, what have I done. I hope this is as fun as I think it’s going to be’ and I just trusted Will’s honesty 100%. Then I started really looking forward to it because I have always worried about what’s coming next on my album, or now I’ve got to focus on this movie, or now I’ve got to focus on my clothing line, and I thought ‘Now I’ve got to focus on this show, whoah, cool, I’m just going to be on TV! It was that whole thing of being on TV and having opinions. Nobody’s really seen me this much; I’m almost opening myself up.” Despite Rita still only being 24 she feels she’s already racked up a wealth of experience in the industry to impart to her hopefuls. “Once I got my team, I sat them down and said, ‘You know, I’ve been said no to a lot of times in my career and it didn’t stop me’. It’s about having a story to tell and it’s about using that story to bring out the best in you.” The Voice can be a make or break opportunity for many of the people who audition and for the judges, who know from their own experiences how it feels to be rejected, breaking someone’s heart isn’t an easy job. It’s a tough role for anyone to adjust to in that hot seat. “I’m not going to lie,” confesses Rita, “in the beginning I found it really difficult. “I don’t say no a lot in my everyday life, I always try and please people and make people happy and even when I know I can’t do something I wouldn’t say no. I had to learn about myself a lot. I have to give it to the boys, they really taught me a lot about my instincts and my gut to just go for things again.” There’s also been a few changes to this fourth series. In previous years the judges were allowed only one steal in the Battle rounds but this time it’ll be two – something Rita feels has shaken things up. “Yes it makes it much better, it also causes a bit of controversy between coaches. It’s kind of like, ‘Ah, so that’s who you really wanted’ so it’s interesting (laughs).” So is she desperate to win? “Yeah, I would love to win!”

We’ll just have to wait and see, but it looks like Rita will definitely be putting her very own stamp on this particular talent show, which airs on January 10.

But he must overcome his ego and family troubles as he looks to reclaim his past glory by starring in a new Broadway play, in this highlyacclaimed film that co-stars Emma Stone and Edward Norton – who’ve also both garnered supporting actor Globe nods – with Naomi Watts and The Hangover’s Zach Galifianakis rounding off an impressive cast.

The other film opening the New Year in impressive fashion is the nearly equally well-received biopic-cum-love story based on the life of renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking – who received the devastating news that he had motor neurone disease at the young age of 21. British star Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables) won’t be taking on Keaton for the Best Actor award at the Globes (but they more than likely will battle it out at the Oscars) – as he’s been nominated in the separate Best Actor in a Drama category – with this lauded performance as one of the world’s greatest minds. This drama chronicles his love story with fellow Cambridge University student Jane Wilde (played by Felicity Jones, yep, she’s received a nomination too) as they overcome impossible odds in the face of adversity – and still manage to break new ground in medicine and science in the process.

Film Review

The hobbiT: The baTTle of The five armies (12A)

far CrY 4 (PS4/XONE/PS3/360/PC)

This sequel to the exceptional Far Cry 3 builds on every aspect of the previous game – without ever reinventing the wheel. And that’s absolutely fine and dandy, as your new hero Ajay Ghale switches the action to the differing Himalayan terrain of Kyrat – from expansive forests to snow-capped mountains – and again, it’s a joy to behold.

#####

bevy of treasure which leads to Thorin sacrificing friendship and honour to keep it away from potential outsiders.

#### While the final instalment in The Hobbit trilogy isn’t without its flaws – much like the series in general – The Battle of the Five Armies still provides a rousing finale that is still far better than most blockbusters out there. The main problem is The Hobbit should’ve been two films, not three. Greedy execs wanted three films to milk the JRR Tolkien cash-cow for all it was worth, and as The Hobbit didn’t have as much to tell as The Lord of the Rings, Jackson had his work cut-out piecing this together in the same way as his 2001-2003 Oscar-winning work – thus hampering him from the get-go. This is evident as the film starts off directly where the second film finished, with vengeful super-sized dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) heading to Lake-Town to obliterate Bard (Luke Evans) and the town’s inhabitants with his fiery wrath. This surely could’ve been the finale to The Desolation of Smaug some may think. And that pretty much sets the tone for the movie: very disjointed, but with some great stand-out setpieces that hark back to Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings glory days. With Smaug out of the way, this leaves Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and his company of dwarves – along with the peacemaking Bilbo (Martin Freeman) – to reclaim their homeworld, but with a

32

www.espmag.co.uk

With several interesting side stories shoe-horned in: elf Tauriel’s (Evangeline Lilly) love story with dwarf Kili (Aidan Turner); and Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), Elrond (Hugo Weaving) and (a good guy) Saruman’s (Christopher Lee) battle against the awoken Sauron to help save a stricken Gandalf (Ian McKellen), to name but two – it does welcomingly fill in some gaps as a prequel to the original The Lord of the Rings series.

Dragon Age goes back to its series roots with a truly compelling game that all role-playing fans should lap-up. With an absolute multitude of content and some great RPG and battle mechanics, Inquisition answers any questions thrown at it and comes up trumps, as it drags you into an immensely diverse world that’s a beauty to behold – particularly on next-gen consoles.

####

WWe 2K15 (PS4/XONE/360/PS3)

2K Games have laid the necessary foundations for the future of WWE on next-gen consoles – even though it doesn’t quite tick all the boxes this year. With a stunning graphical overhaul, 2K’s first foray into this generation’s new consoles does get the slow, methodical feel of the sportsentertainment right – but the omission of a few current wrestlers, game modes and a sub-standard MyCareer add-on leaves it wanting compared to some of THQ’s older iterations.

###

Gavin Miller

Fortunately the combat itself provides a Roman Reigns-style ‘Superman’ punch that fans will still love – but this delivers more of a kick out after two, than a three count. But for the future, you’ll definitely be able to tell what 2K is cookin’ – and hopefully with a John Cena-style ‘Attitude Adjustment’ this will get there. As it stands this is still better than receiving a ‘Curb Stomp’.

The CreW (XONE/PS4/360/PC)

For anyone who’s driven round America this driving equivalent to Destiny is like a dream – but the rest of the game is simply a commendable effort. Tagged as the first MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) driving game, The Crew provides a lot of impressive endeavours – none more so than the ability for you and your friends to take a reckless journey inside an open-world recreation of the United States.

###

This persistently online adventure – which has a noteworthy 20-hour single-player campaign as protagonist Alex Taylor looks to infiltrate criminal groups – has a wealth of content, car upgrading and minigames peppered across this world, from LA to Detroit, and New York to Miami. Despite its immense promise, it is let down by a slightly unfinished feel – average car mechanics, okayish graphics, and some teething bugs – but if you’re after something a little different it’s well worth forming a crew.

DesTiNY: The DarK beloW – eXPaNsioN PaCK (PS4/XONE/PS3/360)

If The Lord of the Rings was Jackson’s much-loved masterpiece – The Hobbit is Jackson’s likeably ‘flawed’ epic yarn. But it’s still a battle well worth undertaking – and for that Mr Jackson and Mr Tolkien, we thank you.

It may not weave the greatest tale (which is by far its biggest downside) as your legendary party of heroes aim to restore order with the land of Thedas in turmoil, but with so much to explore across the beautiful vistas, this is undoubtedly the best of its ilk since Skyrim. Bioware – with the help of the impressive Frostbite 3 engine – has provided the most expansive and epic RPG in quite some time, and has just set the genre alight once again.

Fortunately the final 45-minute battle – which at times does look like one massive special effects scene and is No Helm’s Deep by a long shot – isn’t just left on the battlefield, and is mainly dominated by a fantastic duel between Azog and Thorin. Throw in a few genuinely heartrending moments – it’s hard to not have a lingering tear when Bilbo heads back to the Shire and Jackson’s Tolkien six-parter is wrapped up for good – and this is just about the best out of the three The Hobbit films, which slightly improved each time.

The story might not be up to scratch – it’s definitely not a patch on the last game – but when you factor in co-op and multiplayer modes, this provides an all-round thrill ride that’s still far and away one of the best games of the year.

DraGoN aGe: iNQUisiTioN (XONE/PS4/360/PS3/PC)

But with Thranduil (Lee Pace) and his army of elves laying claim to some of the riches – much to the chagrin of Legolas (Orlando Bloom) – and LakeTown folk displaced and seeking solace in the mountain, it leads to a game of ‘cat and mouse’ to resolve the situation. That’s before Sauron’s orc army (complete with giant trolls), led by Azog (Manu Bennett), catch the disputing factions off-guard by trying to take the strategic stronghold of Lonely Mountain themselves – forcing the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men to unite or be destroyed.

As you take on a narcissistic enemy (complete with a God complex), tremendous highlights include riding elephants, flying a gyrocopter, and leaving food for bait as new wildlife – that now include rhinos and black eagles – take out enemies in satisfying fashion.

If you’re still playing Activision’s impressive MMO-shooter Destiny – then this downloadable expansion pack is for you.

####

It may be a little on the pricey side – and maybe needed a touch more extra content – but generally-speaking this is a worthwhile addition to the Destiny canon, as a long-forgotten enemy awakens beneath the surface of the moon, and you must stop a dark army from invading Earth. The Dark Below cleverly caters for both single and multiplayers alike, by offering new story missions, bounties, strikes, Crucible maps and the ‘Crota’s End’ raid – along with impressive new gear, materials and weaponry that can boost your Guardian’s light level to 32. If you’re a fan, this is an essential extension of Destiny lore.

‘AUDREY’ IS FLAV’S ROMAN HOLIDAY It was only going to be a matter of time before Flav Cipriano bought himself a Vespa. The clue is in the surname. Yes, he’s my brother and I think he finally gave in to temptation after four years of seeing me fly around on my Vespa with a permanent grin from ear to ear! Firstly – being Italian – Vespas and Lambrettas are in our blood. We’ve seen them in old photographs of our relatives back in Italy and there’s always been one in the family whenever we visit. So, owning one was only going to be a matter of time for our Flav. Secondly, it was hard for my brother to ignore just how cheap and hassle-free modern-day Vespas are to own. Approximately £2k will get you a very good used example like Flav’s and then there are the running costs. You’ll get a few quid change from a £20 note to tax it for a year and around £7 will fill your tank and last up to a month depending on your mileage. Insurance is cheaper than a food shop in Waitrose and proper riding gear will set you back around £200 to £300 and this largely depends on the type of helmet you’re after. Like mine, Flav’s is a Vespa S but he chose a sensible matt grey colour compared to my Clementine orange. The S model differs slightly to the entry LX model in as much as it’s

34

www.espmag.co.uk

supposed to look a bit sportier but the main difference is the square headlight (as opposed to round), which is a throwback to the 1970’s model it’s based on. Finding one locally with the specification he was after was always going to be a challenge. The only Vespa dealership is sponsors of this page – Wheels Motorcycles – but their used stock at the time (it was summer) was mostly all sold. But as luck would have it Flav saw this one advertised at a van dealership in Whittlesey who took it in on a part exchange for one of their commercial vehicles. Needless to say it was love at first sight for Flav. He told me:“I guess I could’ve bought a newstyle Lambretta but it was always going to be hard not to opt for a Vespa because they’re so iconic. They’ve been in countless films over the years and the one that stands out for me is Roman Holiday where Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn rode one, so I just had to christen mine Audrey.”

WHEELS MOTORCYCLES First Drove, Fengate, Peterborough PE1 5BJ Tel: 01733 358555 www.wheelsmotorcycles.co.uk

Audrey like her namesake is a bit of a looker and is accepted in wider riding circles. Once upon a time you were either a motorcyclist or a scooterist but today it’s not so black and white says Flav. “You (me) own both a bike and a scooter and I know your mates call you a ‘mocker’ (half mod, half rocker) but the reality is that most people who ride are two-wheeled enthusiasts. Every Sunday I go on a ride out with a couple of biker friends of mine and we meet up with others for a bacon roll and a cuppa. I'm the only one on a scooter there and I’m made very welcome – must be because it's a Vespa! “She’s the centre of attention wherever I go and other Vespa riders always nod their approval when I’m on the road. I rode to Spalding soon after I bought her and she attracted the attention of three attractive female American tourists who had their picture taken with her, as my Vespa reminded them of their time studying in Florence. Shame no telephone numbers were exchanged on that day but Audrey did me proud anyway!” Flav’s Pride & Joy certainly deserves a place on this page and we’d love to hear about more of your beloved scooters, bikes, cars – in fact anything with wheels that’s a mode of transport! It can be something you once owned (as long as you have photos) or a current love. Email office@espmag.co.uk.

AWARD-WINNING COUPE IS BOTH FAST AND FRIENDLY Peugeot’s curvy coupe the RCZ R has been honoured by FHM Magazine in its annual Car of the Year Awards by being named ‘B-Road Thriller of the Year’ for 2014. Like Audi’s TT, aesthetically there are bits of the RCZ R I like and bits I’m not so keen on but then again most modern cars have a design flaw in my humble opinion, which I guess some people may refer to as quirky. Still, I wouldn’t say no if I was offered one! Having owned a Peugeot 205 GTI and 309 GTI I can vouch for the French car maker’s ability to make an engaging car that brings the best out of one’s moderate driving skills. I’m sure the RCZ R has some of that rally and sporting DNA injected into it and that’s why Peugeot made sure when it was launched earlier this year it was the most powerful road-going car in their history. Plus, with 270bhp on tap, it features the world’s most powerful 1.6-litre petrol engine. This R version comes with lowered suspension (by 10mm) compared to the standard RCZ, while aerodynamic downforce has been increased thanks to a new fixed rear boot spoiler. Technical upgrades include a new turbocharger, larger intercooler, redesigned exhaust, modified pistons, reinforced engine block plus a new clutch and gearbox. It’ll sprint to 62mph in 5.9 seconds and will hit 155mph (limited). For greenies out there, you needn’t worry about the impressive performance coming at the expense of the environment, as the RCZ R will still return a friendly 44.8mpg with CO2 emissions of only 145g/km.

Nine year-old Jack Ellis got the best Christmas present he could wish for when he was surprised at his school assembly with brand new motocross riding gear. The Leighton Primary School pupil has been racing 50cc bikes in motocross for the Peterborough Junior MX Club in Chatteris for two years and generous sponsors have stepped in to support Jack for 2015 when he hopes to compete on 65cc machines. Promoter Kevin Sanders bought Jack much needed upgraded riding gear to the tune of £400 and city councillor John Okonkowski contributed a further £200 to ensure Jack has all the financial backing he needs for another successful year. Kevin told me:“Jack is a champion in the making. I’ve seen him race and he’s got bags of talent, he’s a natural. He’s already won a trophy for his consistent attendance at the club and I know it’s the first of many trophies to come. “Watching Jack struck a chord in me because I understand how hard it is to finance ambitious kids like Jack with the necessary equipment they need to help them progress. I know how hard it was for me when I started out and I just wanted to give Jack a helping hand towards becoming a motocross champion of the future.” Jack couldn’t wait to try his new gear on and promised his new sponsors he’d continue to work hard at school and make them proud on his bike too. He’s definitely one for the future, watch this space… www.espmag.co.uk

HAPPY NEw BEAR(D) essential part of your daily routine. After all it’s quicker to apply a little oil each day than to have the hassle of shaving and all it’s associated aggravations… cuts, sore skin and hairs in the sink to name a few.

EVERY DAY Peterborough and Cambridgeshire NHS is urging people to stay healthy by leading an active lifestyle. According to Public Health England (PHE), physical inactivity is the 4th largest cause of disease in the UK, costing around £7.4 billion each year. Exercising for just 30 minutes a day can help prevent or manage over 20 different common health conditions.

Men! Not ready to sacrifice your beard just yet? Then I, well my other half, understand. A beard is part of your identify (so I’m told!); it is for life, not just for Christmas and some might say it’s an extension of your soul.

The art of growing a beard (for it is an art) is a long and winding road. So, if you’re not brave enough to say au revoir to your facial foliage, at least do it justice and look after it properly. Give it the time and care that it deserves… introduce it to Percy Nobleman magical beard elixirs. It will bring you back to your bearded best in no time, everytime!

ACTIVE

The bearded one, aka my other half Edward, has recently tried their Beard Conditioning Oil and has been more than pleased with the results. I didn’t think it was possible, but his beard is not only softer but noticeably thicker too! With a natural blend of argan, almond, avocado and jojoba oils even the coarsest of beards will be left sleek and tamed. Simply apply one pump to your clean, washed beard daily, ideally in the morning. He also had the pleasure of testing Percy Nobleman’s Beard Wash and he can’t recommend it highly enough. It was the scent that first impressed him, with a subtle mix of lime and cedarwood, giving a fresh

yet manly aroma that isn’t too overpowering. Used alongside the Beard Conditioning Oil, this wash helped to thoroughly clean his beard without removing any of the natural oils which can leave beards dry and unhappy. Edward said – “Percy Nobleman’s has literally changed the face of my beard. Not only does it provide my beard with a subtle sweet smelling aroma, the oil keeps it feeling super soft and reduces the amount of split ends. Shaving is now a thing of the past. I am literally the envy of nonbearded men. Since using Percy Nobleman each day as part of my grooming routine, the compliments from other men have piled in.” The moral of the story is if you have a beard, love it, celebrate it and treat it to Percy Nobelman’s! Visit their website www.percynobleman.com for more info and to purchase their products.

Staff at NHS Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are embracing the 'Everybody Active, Every Day' campaign and explain how they enjoy exercising for over 30 minutes daily as part of a healthy lifestyle. CCG's Chief Strategy Officer, Andy Vowles is a keen cyclist; "For me, cycling is the perfect way to get around and enables me to avoid the traffic. It helps me keep fit and is a really pleasant way to get around.” So keeping fit needn't mean expensive gym memberships, a run around your local park after work or a brisk walk at lunchtimes is not only cheap but simple and all you need is a pair of trainers! Only you are responsible for keeping yourself as healthy as possible and being fit is part of it! So get up off the sofa and get out. Lips Vaseline's limited edition Queen Bee lip therapy really is honeylicious. It keeps lips soft and chap-free at all times, giving all your friends something to buzz about!

Face Palmers Daily Calming Facial Lotion is the perfect lightweight moisturiser for sensitive, irritated skin. With soothing chamomile, aloe vera and milk proteins it reduces redness and helps to calm stressed skin. It's easily absorbed and works best when used morning and night! A real skin saver.

Hands I don't know about you but I tend to suffer with dry, sore hands at this time of year. That was until I discovered L'Occitane Shea Hand Cream for dry skin. This is a best seller for a reason. It's formulated with 20% shea butter making it super soft and creamy.

Hair No one wants dry, split hair yet that's what seems to happen during the colder months. Try some hair TLC in the form of Lush's Retread. This heavyweight conditioner is here for you in times of trouble... It's a pit stop for your hair. Apply a plentiful coating and let it go about its work before rinsing.

BEING

NEW START As we transition into another New Year it’s often a time of reflection on the experiences we’ve had in the past year and what we’ll bring forth into the new one. I’m not a fan of New Year resolutions as I believe that we can make changes, or make decisions to renew ourselves including changing our habits, improving our nutrition, taking up a new hobby etc any time of the year, however I wanted to share this acronym with you which describes eight principles that may support greater health and wellbeing…

NEW START N = Nutrition. This is the foundation of our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing (as well as spiritual). A diet high in colourful plant foods, lower in saturated fats from animal produce delivers fibre, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Taking some raw foods daily (yes even in winter months) is encouraged for the enzyme activities. Using foods from as close to nature as you can possibly get which can help crowd out the overly processed ones which are dead, lifeless and offer no healing to the body whatsoever. E = Exercise. Our body is designed to move, everyone can do a little even sitting in a chair if that’s where you need to begin. Walking or exercising in nature has a double whammy with the fresh air and sunlight. Moving the body increases blood and lymphatic flow, releases endorphins to make you feel good as well as strengthening your body internally and externally. So try to get your move on even if it is a few stretches to start! W = Water. Fresh filtered rather than from a plastic bottle (I have written about that many times), we need to keep flow in our body and we need water. We tend to forget nature’s liquor during the winter months so stop and ask how much fresh water (not flavoured) have you taken today, yesterday? S = Sunlight provides our Vitamin D, supports hormone balance, lifts our mood and much more so try to get out when you can during the winter months (yes sometimes it is ‘spot the sun’ but when we do have a clear day try to get a time out to welcome our powerful sun’s rays). T = Temperance, this means to practice moderation in those things that we know are not so helpful to health including, sugar, alcohol, processed foods etc. It’s a balancing act but be truthful about it, eating junk foods and drinking to excess then having a few portions of broccoli is not going to balance out so take a look at your habits and see how or if they are really unbalanced and make some changes.

38

www.espmag.co.uk

A = Air is where the oxygen is, in the winter months we dart from central heating, to heaters in the cars, shops and offices and do not take a breath to draw some really fresh oxygen into the body. We need oxygen for all systems of the body including the immune system so wrap up warm, step out and take a few belly breaths each day! R = Rest should be put as a priority. Good sleep of 7-8 hours is vital for health, we need to rest the organs, detoxify and renew during our sleep so when we’re getting unbroken sleep or staying up too late we don’t give the body the rest it needs. If you can, try to have 1 day per week that you can lay in bed for an hour or so longer, or take a time during the day to put your feet up or even just switch off from the outside world and rest for 15-20 mins – you are worth it! T = Trust. I love this one as I’ve had to practice this many times – trust in myself, in my decisions etc. When we slow down or switch off from distraction and really listen to our inner self or our inner compass we then need to trust in the feeling or information. Our own navigation system is constantly guiding us but we either ignore it or don’t believe it. Learning to trust in what our ‘gut’ feeling or instinct is telling us takes time and practice. Maybe you need to trust more in a higher purpose for your life, or a higher guiding force greater than you. Have an abundant year ahead, wishing you love and happiness, Karen www.karendevine.co.uk Karen is a Registered Nutritionist, Colonic Hyrdrotherpist, Naturopath and coach.

GET GREAT SKIN @ MBE Want great skin? Wish you could remove scars?

M

y Body Essentials have always offered us cutting edge skin care treatments and now as they celebrate their 5th anniversary they’ve introduced the new Dermapen™ This collagen induction therapy is the latest advancement moving things a step forward from stamps and rollers and instead uses micro-needling. Don’t let that panic you though – an anaesthetic cream can be used so it’s pretty painless and the results are amazing. Treatment Manager Mary Edwards says it’s a real breakthrough – “This new Dermapen™ means we can treat problem areas such as surgical scars, stretch marks and acne scarring far more effectively than ever before with long lasting results. It tightens, lifts and rejuvenates skin and is also really effective on fine lines, wrinkles and for minimising enlarged pores.”

MBE offers a range of aesthetic treatments from their centre in Shrewsbury Avenue which can provide much deeper treatments into the layers of the skin rather than just on the surface, backed by more effective professional strength cosmeceutical products. Their IPL permanent hair removal has proved hugely popular as has their body sculpting low level laser Lipobelt which tackles problem areas of fat you just can’t seem to shift by diet and exercise alone. This month they’re offering treatments at £15 per session so it’s a great time to shed some of that extra Christmas ‘packaging’ you’ve acquired. There’s £20 off introductory offer on the Dermapen™ treatment as well. It’s a great time to start your hair removal regime too so that you’ll be fuzz free by the time holiday season comes around! "The page that refuses to sing any more wintry songs because the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so... oh who am I trying to kid? Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!"

Mostly Funny

steve.gonzalez@espmag.co.uk

Party on... As it’s been party season and we’ve all been out an about recently, it reminded me of this great routine by comedian Kevin Bridges… “Every other pop song these days is about things like 'partying until we see the sun' or 'partying on down til the early morn'. Singing about parties that have scheduled end times. “Not very realistic though, ’cause have you ever tried to get a bunch of your pals to leave your house at 6 in the morning? Mayhem. 'It's only 6, we've still got cans left'. “There's someone steaming around your living room looking for a phone charger so he can continue an argument he's having with his missus – ‘I told you I was having a mad one. I thought you were going to your mum’s to watch Strictly’.” “It's 6 in the morning Ryan!”

THE GREAT BRITISH TAKE-OFF Following the popularity of 'The Great British Bake Off' it can only be a matter of time before it's made into a big Hollywood blockbuster. Towards the end of 2014, you may remember that Tom Cruise was spotted in Stamford and Peterborough whilst filming scenes for Mission Impossible 5 at RAF Wittering with co-star Simon Pegg. What you might not know is that Mary Berry from The Great British Bake Off was also in Stamford the same week visiting a school; so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that Cruise and Pegg could’ve met up with her for a spot of research. Is there an actor better suited to play Mr Paul

RESOLUTION www.espmag.co.uk

“There's a game of Fifa on the Playstation from 3 hours ago playing in demo mode and some guy's lighting a fag on your toaster. I think it's safe to say music videos would be a lot different if I was directing them.”

Hollywood, than Mr Hollywood himself (Tom Cruise)? And Simon Pegg in a woman's wig could make a very memorable Mary Berry. In fact, it'd certainly be a much more interesting concept than yet another Mission Impossible film. Oh look, Tom's doing all his own stunts again (yawn). This is the fifth MI film they're making, and SPOILER ALERT: like the other 4, I think it's safe to assume the 'mission' won't be that impossible. It'll just be a bit difficult for a bit before proving completely achievable. But Tom Cruise baking and trying to assemble a Croquembouche in 90 minutes? That's a far tougher mission than clinging to the side of an aircraft over Wittering.

STAND UP FOR A NEW YEAR'S 42

“Well how do I know what time Strictly finishes?”

Let's be honest, the start of a new year can be a dreary time particularly when everyone in the media is constantly telling you how dreary it all is by inventing new names to describe how depressing January can be. Crap Monday, Terrible Tuesday, Orange Wednesday, Throw Your Toys Out of the Pram Thursday, eff off Friday and so on. But instead of convincing yourself you've caught a made up illness – Seasonal Affected Disorder? Really, that's a thing now is it?! Ooh I'm a bit sad because the weather's not very nice – instead of doing that why not give yourself something to look forward to. Remember a few weeks ago when you were

laughing noise out of your face at something funny you heard a comedian say on TV – well why not resolve to make a 2015 New Year's resolution to watch more live comedy. There's loads of it coming our way locally through 2015. Familiar names you've all heard of, rising stars on their way to the top and comedians who are so funny you'll be left annoyed they're not as well known as they should be. Take a look at the stand up gig guide opposite for what's on soonish, and two names that are worth booking ahead for as they're sure to sell out fast are at The Cresset: Dylan Moran on May 7 and Reginald D Hunter on June 10.

Happy New Year folks, I hope everyone had a fab Christmas and like me indulged in all the delights that the festive period has to offer. As I’m sure you’re now fully aware the Football Club made two massive announcements before Christmas, NO I am not talking about the return of the Mac Attack (Mackail-Smith and Mclean)! London Road Stadium is now officially called The ABAX Stadium, yes that’s right we’ve changed the name of our home. With finances spiralling out of control in the modern game it’s only right

44

www.espmag.co.uk

that football clubs look for new ways to top up the coffers, and Peterborough United have done just that by selling the naming rights of the ground for a cool half a million quid! Now I know that some won’t see that as a huge amount of money in football terms but when you think of what that money can go towards i.e. pitch renovation, completing the brand new training complex at Nene Park, welcome repair work to the Stadium etc, etc, I’m sure you’ll understand that the deal is fantastic for us.

We’ve had some great feedback so far from the fans whilst at the same time we also understand there will be some who aren’t so pleased, but let me reassure you we maintain our former glories and conquests keeping our history intact and these still simply strengthen our grip financially as we move forward. The ground still sits on London Road and the club’s ambitions remain the same, the only difference is the financial boost to the bank account and the changing of a few names. So grab your coat and come on down to the ABAX Stadium, we look forward to welcoming you.

keith.dalton@espmag.co.uk

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…

The beginning of 2015 looks like being an exciting time for Closed Curcuit.

Since 2002, The Dead Rabbits have long been a popular and lively band on the local live music circuit in Peterborough, Stamford and the surrounding area. That’s when they began their tribute to The Pogues with huge acclaim. Over the years, many a local venue has found its patrons bouncing, drinking and swaying to their raucous sound and very lively stage presence. That includes a very memorable appearance at the Peterborough Beer Festival. So it is with a heavy heart that they have decided that the ride is over and they need to call it a day. Mike Carr, their lead singer told ESP – “We’ve had a great time over the years and some very memorable gigs. One that stands out is when we played at The Brewery Tap with two original members of The Pogues, Spider Stacy and Andrew Rankin at the inaugural Randall Rootz Festival. The fact that we were playing with them just added to the moment because the festival was created in memory of our drummer and friend Mark Randall who sadly passed away in 2004.” Indeed 10 years later Randall Rootz is still an important feature in the local live music scene.

48

www.espmag.co.uk

There have been a few line-up changes over the years, but, Mike added – “The one constant has been our very loyal fan base who have encouraged us to play louder and drink harder. So thanks to all who have supported us over the years and made the gigs the great and memorable nights that they have always been. We’ve made a lot of friends, we’ve drank a lot of whisky and I think we’ve all escaped with only mild alcoholism – I guess that’s rock ’n’ roll!”

“...I think we’ve all escaped with only mild alcoholism – I guess that’s Rock ’n Roll!” The Dead Rabbits’ very last gig will be played on New Year’s Eve at Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge in Stamford. The night is called ‘Goodbye Rabbits Hello 2015 Show' and the band would obviously love to see all their fans there for their party to remember. Go to the venue’s website for details www.mamaliz.co.uk.

The Peterborough based band have only been going for 15 months and in that short time they’ve been very busy with local gigs and summer festivals including the Yaxley Festival where they played to an audience of thousands and even more at The Willow Festival and Peterborough Beer Festival. In addition to this they’ve already completed their debut album, Violet Nights, which is due for release this month. The band are a 5 piece, consisting of Lee (guitar), Kirsty (vocals), Ant (drums and vocals), Dave (bass) and Ben (guitar) and have a style which has been compared to bands such as Skunk Anansie and Paramore. To promote the album Closed Curcuit are planning a launch party at Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge in Stamford on Friday January 30. Support on the night comes from local bands Black Hawk Down and Skyfight and to encourage local fans to attend the launch the band have arranged to run a minibus service to take people from Peterborough to Stamford and back. This year plans to be as the busy as last for Closed Curcuit, because they have already started writing material for their second album and plan to sign up to a promoter next year in order to go out on tour to promote their new albums. If they’re going to be away from the area a lot then it makes the January 30 launch a very important date for local fans of the band. For tickets contact them on tickets@closedcurcuit.org.uk.

SEE OUR WONDERFUL DISPLAY OF “NEW” CATERING EQUIPMENT

Come and visit us at our new showroom As some bands retire from the Peterborough live music scene, new ones arrive. They are Los Tombstones, a 4 piece band consisting of Gary Lee (keyboards), Andy Henderson (bass player and vocalist), Mark Tucker (guitar), and Stuart Garneys (drums). They’ve played a few local gigs so far and are looking for more opportunities to spread their own particular take on something slightly different to the local music scene in the shape of organ driven 60's garage. Their style is influenced by American garage punk bands of the 1960s, as well as some British bands (their set includes freaked-out versions of songs by The Animals, The Zombies and The Kinks). They also include a few original numbers, more of which the band are looking to add in the future. You can find out more about this up and coming band by going to: www.facebook.com/lostombstones. There are some samples there of some of their recent live gigs and the featuring of keyboards is reminiscent of The Doors. The same link can be used to contact the band.

More sad news for those on the local music scene with the news that Slide to Open’s lead singer Ian Hill has passed away.

who enjoyed performing rock classics and Ian was undoubtedly a central part to the entertainment they delivered.

It happened a couple of months ago and the news has been followed by the announcement that the very popular Peterborough covers band have decided not to perform anymore gigs and are consequently no longer together.

I remember the band appeared twice on Band of The Week with Claire and I on our Saturday show on Lite FM. Undoubtedly a highlight for me was their first appearance when at the time we asked each week’s guests to perform two semi acoustic songs.

Band member Pete Lee told ESP that – “Ian was irreplaceable, and the band has now split-up.” On their facebook page the band have posted a thank you to all their fans and followers for supporting them over the last seven years or more. I saw Slide to Open a number of times and they were a fun band

Slide to Open chose Led Zeppelin’s Rock and Roll and Ian delivered a spellbinding performance. I remember also how humbled he was at the enthusiastic response of our listeners that day. I’m sure some people have a recording of that session. A great memory of a good man.
