Force Majeure - Thursday January 14 at 7.30pm A critical favourite and word-of-mouth sensation at this year's Cannes Festival, where it took the Jury Prize Un Certain Regard, this wickedly funny and precisely observed psychodrama tells the story of a family whose life is turned upside down when an avalanche strikes on their holiday and the decision a husband takes shakes the family’s world to its core.

Tangerines - Thursday January 21 at 7.30pm A film set in 1992 and post-Soviet Caucasus, telling the tale of fear, fighting and farmers staring Lembit Ulfsak and Elmo Nüganen and was even Oscar Nominated for Best Foreign Film.

PETERBOROUGH MEMORY WALK - THE BEST YEAR YET! TIME TO FOLLOW THE BEAR

We’re delighted to tell you that the popular Peterborough Memory Walk, in aid of The Alzheimer’s Society, has raised more than £62,000.

The credit card bill may be in and the weather might be rubbish but the Straw Bear Festival in Whittlesey is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face!

“The popularity of this event shows just how much awareness has grown in the city and that can make such a difference to people like my mum.

The atmosphere in the town over this weekend is buzzing and the pubs and bars will be packed. The annual parade through the town centre will see the straw ‘bear’ making his way through the streets accompanied by dancers and musicians. It’s all happening over January 15, 16 and 17 starting with a Friday night concert at the Ivy leaf Club with Sunjay, Kara and Gilmore & Roberts (tickets £10). On Saturday the parade kicks off leaving Manor Leisure Centre at 10.30am – check the full route on the website. Throughout the day there’ll be story teller sessions at the Methodist Reformed church and acoustic sessions in the Town Hall. In the evening it’s the barn dance at Sir Harry Smith Community College with music from Peeping Tom (tickets £12). It all concludes on Sunday with the bear burning at the college from 12 noon – don’t worry no bears are hurt this weekend! For tickets and all you need to know head to www.strawbear.org.uk.

“We want to thank all of the people that came, the generous sponsors and everyone that was involved in making this event so special.

It was the biggest yet with almost 900 people turning up at Ferry Meadows on the day to show their support and walk for dementia and Alzheimer’s awareness.

“Peterborough has raised an incredible £93,000 over four events and plans are already in place for the 2016 walk.”

The walk is a national event taking place across England, Wales and Northern Ireland and I caught up with Caroline Ignatius, who organised the Peterborough Walk after her mum was diagnosed with the onset of Alzheimer’s at 65. Caroline told me: “I started organising the walk as a positive way of making a difference to people living with Alzheimer’s along with their families and carers. “People had the choice of a 2k or 10k walk and the atmosphere was extra special thanks to our compere on the day Kev Lawrence and Ernest Ignatius (my dad) who sang for us. We also enjoyed a Zumba warm up!”

WINTER TRAIN TRIPS AT NVR

This month you can still get out an about and sample a few local attractions including the Nene Valley Railway. On January 1, 2 and 3 you can enjoy one of their winter-warmer steam train rides departing at 10am, 11.45am and 2pm. You can hop off along the route and take a bracing walk before catching another or just watch the world go by in a cosy carriage behind a steam locomotive. Later in January, through to March, there are special fares on the Swedish Railcar which is running on alternative Sundays starting on January 17. There is no need to book just jump on at any of the NVR Stations Yarwell, Wansford (the Railway’s main station) Ferry Meadows, Orton Mere and Peterborough NVR. Timetables and details are on www.nvr.org.uk or call on 01780 784444.

The event has grown year on year and this year’s Peterborough event raised more than £62,000. Caroline continued: “It’s such an amazing amount of money that will provide even more services to help people live well with dementia and fund valuable research for the society.

ESP would like to say a big well done to Caroline and everyone that took part to make it a success and raise awareness for such a worthy cause. For more information and to register your interest for 2016, visit www.memorywalk.org.uk. Anna Ruggiero

BEGINNER'S PHOTOGRAPHY AT FERRY MEADOWS Did you get a new camera for Christmas or fancy dusting off an old one? If so, join Ranger Ashley Wheal for a beginner's course to learn how to get the most from your camera and learn some essential photography skills at Ferry Meadows on Friday January 22 from 1.30pm – 3.30pm, meeting at the visitor centre. New Year

Fitness For the fun and easy targets there are a few 5k races which also raise money for a good cause and are a great goal to train towards. • Pretty Muddy – Burghley House, Stamford –Saturday June 4, 2016 • Race for Life 5K/10K – Burghley House, Stamford – Sunday June 5, 2016 • Race for Life 5K – Ferry Meadows, Peterborough – Tuesday July 5, 2016

O

ver 2015 I’ve seen so many people achieve great new fitness goals and I’ve achieved a few decent ones myself too. Whilst my own aims this year were a little more extreme than most I’m still always inspired by everyone else who sets out to better themselves, push boundaries and put in the effort to achieve things they once thought might be out of reach. This year since completing the notorious race across the Sahara, The Marathon des Sables, my own goals have rocketed and I’ve since achieved a few more extreme feats I once would’ve never imagined possible including a 40 mile, 400 obstacle race, (placing 2nd), raced 105 miles across Scotland and ran 69 miles following Hadrian’s Wall in a day. I’m often asked for training and diet advice yet many times people are almost apologetic that they’re ‘only’ training for a 5 or 10k run or a half or even full marathon because they feel it’s not much compared to the things I’ve done, I quickly correct them on this. Fitness goals are all relative to the individual and it was only three years ago I started running 2-3 miles and had to stop several times to even complete that distance, so I can completely relate to anyone whose ambitions are far more humble than the stuff I do now and I think it’s completely admirable. As we creep into 2016, I like so many others will have new goals and I look forward to seeing the fitness gains (or losses from bellies and bums) that people will make. I love seeing the diverse range of people doing the Park Runs on Saturday mornings round Ferry Meadows or Rutland Water, these are great community sessions with no pressure amongst runners ranging from super sprinters to grannies with dogs and parents with pushchairs. This is a great place to train towards some of our area’s events coming up this year.

www.espmag.co.uk

And it’s not all about running, there are great cycling events all around including www.action. org.uk/peterborough-100 on Sunday June 26 which is a great ride that takes in some lovely places around Peterborough I’d never seen before.

For people getting into obstacle race training there are a couple of great places just a short drive away which are great for improving your fitness and obstacle leaping skills. Basically they’re really cool playgrounds for big kids. Take a change of clothes just in case! www.fortitudefitnesscentre.co.uk www.theobstaclegym.co.uk For anyone on the fence about doing anything like this, check out the endless posts online by people brandishing medals with sweat or mud covered faces but note the familiar beaming grin of pride they can’t hide. I strongly recommend you just bite the bullet, register for an event, tell your friends, get them involved too, and most importantly enjoy it! Here’s to 2016 and what we make of it! www.darrengrigas.com

NO ORDINARY JOE

- HE’S HIRED!

Peterborough plumber Joseph ‘Joey’ Valente beat the boardroom and won – ESP’s Pep Cipriano was watching his every move...

Photos: Boundless

resourcefulness. He has natural business acumen and a lust for doing deals, which is perhaps what drew Lord Sugar to him early on. In the penultimate episode Lord Sugar said: “He talks a language I can understand” and you can’t get higher praise than that. Then there was his performance in the semi-final interviews episode, which got him to the final. It was virtually faultless.

T

he 25-year-old, who admits he was a bit of a naughty young lad and was expelled from Stanground College as a teenager, is starting this year as Lord Sugar’s business partner proving you really can turn your life around. How great to see another person from the city doing us proud with some real graft.

In the final when at one point he looked to be lagging behind, he clawed it back with that epic industry expert focus group scene. Not only did Joey get them to endorse his business plan on camera, he asked for business cards and took away the one thing missing from his pitch – a unique selling point. This turned out to be smart technology abled devices.

Joseph Valente was a breath of fresh air on The Apprentice 2015. He never pretended to be anyone but himself and he navigated his way through the process by being down to earth, genuine and focused.

Now our Joey has the world at his feet. He’s a credit to Peterborough and much like Nurun Ahmed before him I’m proud to say they both represented our city impeccably on one of television’s biggest shows.

His initial introduction to our TV screens was all bravado. He wanted “the cars, the girls and the power” and he was the “master of persuasion with the women.” Then he claimed to be the“Godfather of business.”

There was something uniquely Peterborough about them both on screen, which is hard to describe unless you live here and that’s what kept a smile on my face throughout.

What I loved most about Joey was his initiative and

12

www.espmag.co.uk

7. Joseph:“I won’t let you down, I’m going to make you a lot of money.” Lord Sugar:“Well, you’ve got to win first.”

9. Mentioned Peterborough a lot in the final. Clearly, he saved the best thing to say until last!

But he doesn’t dismiss the importance of getting a school education and qualifications. He was recently quoted encouraging young people to ensure they make the most of being at school.

His only ‘poor’ task was selling high end property where he was unfairly penalised for being assertive, ambitious and bullish – interpreted as coming across ‘pushy’. In the same episode the developer told Joey to lose his pink shirt and braces. Ironic when agents wearing this typical attire have been selling luxury property for years.

6. Stunned one of Lord Sugar’s advisors in the semi-final with his correct responses to questions about Lord Sugar’s biography

8. Shaved off his moustache for the semi-final to sharpen up his image. Reminiscent of Claudio Gentile doing the same for Italy in the 1982 World Cup final

At times he was in danger of being drawn into the corporate game but he stood firm, didn’t change his persona and won through with dignity and his integrity intact. He’s a smart cookie with what I’d call street-sharp intelligence, as by his own admission, “school wasn’t really for me.”

But within a couple of episodes his level-headed and mature approach to tasks and teamwork saw his previous outlandish statements pale into insignificance. It was obvious Joey impressed Lord Sugar early on. He went about his business in a controlled manner and wasn’t out to be the centre of attention.

5. “I’m not shouting, I just talk loud.”

Find out what Joey told me about his Apprentice experience with my interview in February’s ESP but until then here are ten of his best moments… 1. Demonstrated his resourcefulness when using a waste paper bin to catch water when it was being poured over a model’s head to simulate a shower 2. Showed his initiative to suggest the £5 bag (five items for a fiver) in the discount stores episode 3. Came up with the name ‘Rejuvenate’ for the healthy snack bar 4. Focused on the positives (few of them) when pitching poor customer feedback about the snack bar

10. During his meeting with industry experts in the final he asked for their business cards as well as video testimonials about his own business! Lord Sugar was impressed and said:“You've got more cheek than Kim Kardashian.” Peterborough’s first Apprentice candidate Nurun Ahmed is a big Joseph fan and told me: “Joseph’s hard graft, dedication and determination to chase his dream paid off. He has self-belief, drive and vision and these are key qualities to becoming a successful entrepreneur.

“Joseph’s hard graft, dedication and determination to chase his dream paid off.” “I knew he’d go far in the process and in the end he was a worthy winner who was up against a highly intelligent contender in Vana. Joseph kept it real and didn't put on a façade, which won Lord Sugar who also started off as a rough diamond! “I have no doubt he’ll make a success of his expanding business because of his personality and work ethic. I wish Joseph the very best and I’m looking forward to seeing him build the Valente empire!”

TOO MUCH TV OUT FOR THE COUNT?

Watched too much TV over Christmas? Boffins at Harvard say men who watch 20 hours a week lower their sperm count by 44%. Presumably this doesn’t apply to watching Television X.

2016 HAPPY IN LOVE? 12 TIPS ON WHAT TO BE…

I always try and have a positive outlook on New Year’s Day despite being greeted in the mirror by the sight of a pregnant looking man as a result of excess food and booze for the majority of December. So, I go online and the news story at the top of my feed is about January being the most common month for suicides. How depressing. Then I tell myself that checking out my 2016 horoscope ‘year ahead for Gemini’ will give me just the tonic to start January on a high. I click to bhoroscope.com and it says: ‘Key events will involve disappointment or the collapse of values. Stars have prepared many difficulties for you. You won’t enjoy the treat at the end of the route. At least in love you will be successful. Unfortunately even health problems won’t avoid you.’ Now I am depressed! At least I’ll be successful in love (I assume this means my love of motorbikes and cars). But for my fellow Gemini men who interpret ‘successful in love’ as the year you finally get it right with the missus, don’t be fooled into thinking it’ll be a forgone conclusion just because your horoscope says so. While we blokes only need to be fed, slept with and left alone at all other times to be happy in a relationship, women need us to be everything to them. The list of roles we have to take on is more than Mr Benn managed in 13 episodes on children’s

CIAOS OUT > 14

www.espmag.co.uk

BBC in the early 1970s.This means you have to prioritise, which is a momentous challenge within itself. But fear not, as I’ve drawn on my years of market research to compile a list of definitive roles and character traits you should look to fulfil in 2016. There are 12, which means you only have to be this person once and for a month only, before you transform yourself into the next person your woman requires you to be. Here’s what to be… to make her happy in 2016: 1.

Very rich

2.

A psychiatrist

3.

A pest exterminator

4.

Good to her mother

5.

A chef, plumber, carpenter, electrician and decorator all rolled into one

6.

Very clean

7.

Very sympathetic

8.

Disgusted with porn

9.

Enemies with your ex

10. Prepared to give up three quarters of your bed for the rest of your life 11. A lover of candles and scatter cushions 12. A giver of constant compliments

ACCOLADES AT COMMS OSCARS Recognition is sometimes the best present we could wish for and I was proud to see my work team (my other work team, not my ESP colleagues) acknowledged for their achievements at the annual Athene Communications-hosted Peterborough Regional PR and Media Awards. The awards recognise the best communication campaigns, professionals and journalists from across the city and our region. Peterborough City Council’s communications team were highly commended for Communications Team of the Year, Best Use of Social Media (Perkins Great Eastern Run) and Communicator of the Year

MY WORD OF THE MONTH

(Steve Titman). We won Creative Campaign of the Year (Teach Peterborough). It’s the only time they’ll get a mention in my column, so well done to: Karen, Amanda, Sally, Steve, the other Steve, Megan, Mark, Clare, Gary (a little bit) and anyone else who came and went in 2015. Well done also to everyone who was nominated – the local pool of communications professionals has never looked so good. I suppose I should also mention the esteemed panel of judges that included: Caroline Raines, Martin Chillcott, Paul Stainton and Gavin Elsey. No brown paper envelopes stuffed with cash were required.

JANUARY

Seriously, what’s good about it?!: New Year’s Day hangover, trousers don’t fit, overdraft caned, cold, dull, wet, windy, white complexion until April, sale items you don’t even need, clapped-out boiler, a**e over t** on ice, cold (again I know), pointless resolutions, annoyingly happy gym employees and February on its way (meaning Valentine’s malarkey).

>> Janet F – next time we’ll get a photo! >> Debs – don’t forget the Harley canvas… >> Tony – buoncompleanno blah, blah, blah >> Bru – dinner “like adults do”? >> Meggie – seven years into a ten year plan x >> God – when will I win the lottery?

DONATE TO LIDO LEGEND MEMORIAL They say less is more and I for one was glad to see Cathedral Square decorated with less clutter over the festive season. The modern and contemporary designed tree looked fabulous and dozens of people had selfies – there was even a marriage proposal in front of it! Despite being a vibrant and charismatic character he led a modest life and for many years lived alone in a caravan on the Embankment along with his ‘strong man’ trophies and scrapbooks. He died penniless but friends and colleagues raised enough funds for his funeral and he is buried in Eastfield Cemetery. The Walter Cornelius story is screaming out to be made into a Hollywood film but until that time the memorial project needs to raise £5,000 and if you’d like to make a donation then just visit www.justgiving.com/waltercornelius

he city council also opened Green Square on Long Causeway, which completed the latest phase to transform the city centre, giving it stronger appeal to new businesses and shops.

T

for his wit and eccentric ways. He died in 1983 aged 60 but this year he’ll be commemorated as part of the 80th anniversary of the Lido, which happens to be my favourite city landmark.

Like the tree, Green Square is innovative and different. It features a granite floor design celebrating the works of local poet John Clare, surrounded by benches engraved with poems written by local schoolchildren and decorative marker posts.

Of all the world records he set perhaps the most famous was attempting to fly across the river Nene, jumping off Brierley’s supermarket with hundreds of local spectators lining the banks of the river to watch him. This feat earned him £300 and a year’s worth of groceries!

And as we move into 2016 we’ll be celebrating another historical name locally when Vivacity, in partnership with the city council will be unveiling a weather-vane memorial to Walter Cornelius at the Lido when it opens on May 28. Walter was a local legend and strong-man who lived his whole adult life in Peterborough after emigrating from Latvia in the 1940s. He made his name by pulling off incredible stunts and breaking 54 world records and raising thousands of pounds for charity in the process. He worked as a lifeguard at the Lido and became a much-loved local personality known

THE PEOPLE’S APPRENTICE Joseph Valente did Peterborough proud in The Apprentice and he was a breath of fresh air to watch on a show that’s becoming irritating with so many useless contestants on it. Read Joey’s Apprentice story on page 12 and I’ll be interviewing him next month.

Others included: • walked on his hands for 153 miles • pulled two double decker buses, full of people, with his teeth, for 700 yards • pushed a pea with his nose up a hill for 1,400 yards • skipped for 90 minutes with a chain weighing 48 lbs • ate a live mouse in two bites for a bet • swam across the English Channel for a £200 bet in 1950

Adele

We’ve been waiting to put Adele on our front cover for years and the wait has been worth it. After her stratospheric return at the end of last year she deserves all the accolades coming her way – and there have been plenty of them. This girl’s mantelpiece must be straining under the weight of all her awards and we’ve no doubt there’ll be more to come. If anyone is excited about a new year it must be Adele. Her US tour sold out within minutes and her UK tour next month will give home-grown fans the chance to see her perform live for the first time in far too long. She’s broken records around the world with her new album ‘25’ and she dominated the second BBC Music Awards being hailed Best British Artist and also winning Best Live Performance for that fabulous show with Graham Norton. Although she couldn’t attend on the night of the awards she said in her video message – "Sorry I'm not there. I'm absolutely gutted but thanks so much for my award. "That's amazing. I've only just put out new music. I'm so chuffed." Adele’s single Hello caused a complete sensation from the moment a snippet was heard in the X Factor ad break and the buzz doesn’t seem to have stopped since! “My last record was a break up record and if I had to label this one I would call it a make up record,” says Adele. “I’m making up with myself. Making up for lost time. Making up for everything I ever did and never did.” Her first new music since her Oscar winning single Skyfall in 2012 is breaking all records and it seems everyone’s listening to, or watching this incredible young woman with the amazing voice. The much-viewed cinematic video for Hello was shot in the countryside surrounding Montreal and is directed by the celebrated young Canadian director Xavier Dolan (Mommy, Tom at the Farm) and yes it’s another tug on the nation’s heartstrings, but oh, she just does it so damn well! And then there have been the live performances. Adele returned to the live stage for the first time in four years, playing a triumphant concert at New York's Radio City Music Hall and then there was that amazing hour-long special TV show, Adele at The BBC, followed by a performance on Saturday Night Live securing her star status in the US. Adele is set to embark on a tour of the UK and Europe next month starting in Belfast with the European leg including dates in Stockholm, Berlin, Lisbon, Barcelona, Paris and Antwerp to name a few. The dates take her through until June so we can’t see Adele getting much rest for a while yet.

Photo: Shayne Laverdière

She’s featured on the cover of TIME Magazine, made it onto the NME People Of The Year 2015 list and she’s definitely on our list too! www.adele.com

THE PEACOCK PETERBOROUGH Admiral Taverns has recently invested thousands in the refurbishment of The Peacock pub on London Road and it’s looking fantastic with a complete facelift, new bars, new flooring, new furniture and even the loos are getting an upgrade. It’s great to see a city pub regenerated and landlady Amanda Payne and business partner Colin Payne are determined to put the pub back on the map. From real food to real ales, sport to live music they aim to make the pub a regular destination. The back room is now a more enclosed area specifically designed with diners in mind and it will be much more family friendly. Chef Kristian Goodwin has a good reputation locally and is a trusted part of the new team. He turns out a great Sunday roast with a choice of three meats for just £6.95 and quality home cooked food throughout the week. Themed evenings including steak nights and curry nights will also be on the way this year, along with quiz nights and Killer Pool sessions. Well known as a popular venue for Peterborough United fans, the sports bar area now has an extra pool table, TV showing Sky Sports, a dartboard and they encourage pool and darts teams.

The Peacock was always popular on the live music scene and their commitment to bringing in more bands is moving forward with regular live nights. In the summer this will extend out into the improved garden area with a new stage for bands. The garden will be more enclosed making it family friendly and even the car park is getting a spruce up. Amanda’s been in the pub trade locally for around seven years and has high hopes for The Peacock. “We want to see the pub thrive and achieve its full potential. As an independent pub we can really give a more friendly personal touch and aim to make it welcoming for everyone from families to sports fans.” Real ale fans will be pleased to hear they’re adding a third pump which means there’ll be different ales on rotation to accompany the regular Doom Bar ale plus they’ll be introducing even more foreign bottled beers. Bike fans are not forgotten as the open bike night continues on Tuesdays and a new menu specifically for the bike crowd will be available then along with special offers. The Peacock, 26 London Road, Peterborough, PE2 8AR. Tel: 01733 311829.

If like me you’ve merrily eaten your way through December, you’ll be ready to do some exercise and get that body moving. So for the January column of Food Glorious Food, I thought I’d look at ways you can do a little exercise combined with enjoying some tasty flavours. I’ve also had the pleasure of dining at The Blue Bell in Easton which offers delicious Italian food in a countryside setting, and I hear on the grapevine we may be getting a Wagamama too! Read below to find out more...

THE LAKESIDE KITCHEN AND BAR AT FERRY MEADOWS The Lakeside Kitchen and Bar at Ferry Meadows offers a perfect view of Gunwade Lake and a superb menu, supporting local producers such as Grasmere Farm and Hambleton Bakery. Delicious dishes include a fresh halloumi salad with tasty roasted red peppers, drizzled in olive oil on a bed of lush lettuce leaves, rocket and a sprinkle of pomegranate, full of goodness which is needed this time of year! You can enjoy daily specials, a breakfast menu, freshly made cakes and a roast on a Sunday along with a licensed bar to refresh yourself after your walk.

ORIGIN8 AT SACREWELL FARM This January, why not take a trip to Sacrewell, just off the A1/A47 junction at Wansford and enjoy a day of agriculture, heritage and fine foods. Set in a beautiful rural location, the onsite Origin8 Café is a popular foodie spot offering a wide selection of handmade hot meals from traditional sausage and mash to child friendly cheesy bean pasties. For me, January is all about comfort food and flavours that make you feel cosy and warm so I’m delighted to hear that the hot chocolate at Origin8 is

made from Belgian chocolate pebbles – perfect for us chocoholics! The Origin8 team at Sacrewell told me: “We think January is a time to put down the party food and a time to pick up a fresh handmade hot meal from a selection of winter favourites. Our winter warmers are made from locally sourced ingredients, so you know what you are eating is usually grown just a few miles away!” For more info on prices and tasty treats visit www.origin8delicafes.com.

Ferry Meadows is a great place to connect with nature and get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and I can’t think of a better way to spend a few hours than taking a brisk walk followed by enjoying some delicious and tasty local food.

During the winter months, dining times are from 8am - 3pm and until 7pm during the summer. For more info visit www.lakesidekitchenandbar.com or call 01733 233218.

WAGAMAMA BID FOR PETERBOROUGH Now I’m very excited about the possible arrival of a Wagamama restaurant to Peterborough. Described as fresh, lively food (with soul), this pan-Asian styled chain has proved popular in other cities and it’s easy to see why. All their restaurants look great with Japanese style ramen bars which are long wooden tables encouraging fun and sociable dining! The food is delicious with meals such as chili squid, flavoursome curries, noodles, healthy salads, and fresh juices; Wagamama is a treat every time. So let’s hope their bid to have a restaurant on Long Causeway in the Blacks store and adjoining shop premises is successful! I’ll keep you updated on our social media so keep your eyes peeled.

Fundraise for Thorpe Hall’s 25th Anniversary So it’s a new year and time to get excited about what lies ahead – you’re making plans and resolutions, maybe booking a holiday and looking at a little self improvement to boot.

Photos: Emma Bothamley

On the weekend of June 4 and 5, the streets around Peterborough will once again be teeming with cyclists taking part in the Tour of Cambridgeshire. Roads will be closed to make way for more than 5,000 cyclists tackling a 120km route starting and finishing at Peterborough Arena. The organisers have chosen to support Thorpe Hall Hospice once again and the hospice fundraising team are hoping to have hundreds of participants sporting a Sue Ryder jersey and raising funds for incredible care.

In April the hospice will be marking its 25th anniversary and asking you to get involved in making this a year to remember. But you don’t have to wait until then to sign up for a challenge or fundraising event.

Saturday September 24 is set to be a very special day in the Thorpe Hall calendar. That’s the date the licence to thrill will be issued for the 25th anniversary ball. Taking place in the grounds of the mansion house in Longthorpe, the ball will be a glittering spectacle, with a spy theme, featuring a host of entertainment.

W

e’re pleased to say there are loads of events to look forward to locally in the coming months and ESP will always keep you updated on what’s going on. One of our highlights last year was finally seeing the new Thorpe Hall Hospice open up after so many local people helped with the fundraising appeal. It doesn’t stop there though, there’s more money to raise and if your new 2016 calendar is looking a little bare, the team at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice have lots of suggestions for ways to fill it up.

A week later, on Saturday June 11, the Thorpe Hall Hospice team will be at the Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival as the charity partner. The fundraising team are looking for businesses or groups willing to put together teams to take on all-comers on the water at Peterborough Rowing Lake.

On Good Friday, March 25, the Easter bunny will be hopping in to Thorpe Hall to lay an Easter trail for young visitors. The Easter egg hunt will take you around the beautiful gardens – and make sure you have plenty of chocolate ready for Easter Sunday.

There’ll be lots more information to come on these events in the coming months. If you’d like to register your interest please contact the fundraising team at Thorpe Hall Hospice by emailing thorpe.fundraising@sueryder.org or call 01733 225999.

GIVE UP SOME TIME FOR CHARITY - SUPPORT THE ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY Radio One’s recent Million Hours campaign encouraged people to give up some of their time and volunteer and if you’re looking to make a difference this year there are plenty of local charities and organisations needing extra help. One of them is the Peterborough branch of the Alzheimer’s Society. Dementia can happen to anyone and at the moment there’s no cure but the Alzheimer’s Society helps to keep those affected by dementia connected to their lives and the people who matter most.

There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK and the number’s set to rise to 1 million by 2021. There are many ways you can get involved with the charity who are always encouraging people to volunteer for both the benefit of people affected with dementia and for

themselves as they gain a lot from the experience too. The Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Resource Centre in Peterborough is opening its doors on Saturday January 16 to give free advice to anyone with questions about dementia. Staff will be on hand from 10am-1pm to offer information, support and advice. The Alzheimer’s Society team is particularly keen to welcome carers who are unable to access their services during normal office hours.

The charity is also looking for volunteers locally – please call Debbie Holmes on the same number. There is also another volunteering event in Peterborough for people who want to make a difference on Thursday February 4 at the Tesco Community Room in Serpentine Green Shopping Centre. If you’d like to attend and find out more, contact Caroline Ignatius via Facebook or on 07760 357095. Anna Ruggiero

Pete’s living the American dream!

1930 Chevrolet Sedan

I’ve always had a love for classic American cars and those from the 1950s in particular. But in recent years US TV shows such as Gas Monkey Garage and Chasing Classic Cars have helped to broaden my car porn horizons and now I find myself drooling over Americana metal from the 1930s right up to the 1970s. There are so many American cars on my wish list and it’s hard to single one out but perhaps the most iconic of them all has to be the 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air and my mate Peter Tibbs just so happens to own one. I’ve known Pete for years and it wasn’t until recently that I discovered he had such taste! His gorgeous Bel Air is finished in what I’d describe as a light metallic Hubba Bubba bubblegum pink and needless to say it turns heads everywhere it goes. You’d think owning one of the most symbolic cars of the last century

34

www.espmag.co.uk

would be enough for Pete but no, his passion for American classics doesn’t stop with the ’57. He’s recently bought a beautiful 1930 Chevrolet Sedan and a slick 1978 Corvette Silver Anniversary. Still beaming following his latest purchases he told me: “I’ve always liked the look of 1930s-style cars, so when I saw the Sedan for sale I couldn’t resist it. The Corvette happened to be sitting alongside it and I had to have that too! I’ve been on the lookout for a DeLorean and the Corvette shares some of its status, plus this particular one had solid history and I wasn’t going to let the opportunity pass me by. “Driving them couldn’t be more different. The Sedan is a very basic car and you have to have your wits about you when you’re behind the wheel at 50 miles an hour – it's what I call a very mechanical style of driving! The Corvette is a two-seater and it’s automatic, making it easy to drive despite having a very long bonnet and being quite wide.”

Pete’s Sedan was one of several models favoured by gangsters and plenty of examples were riddled with bullets in Hollywood films. His car started life just before the great depression and the owner left it in a barn for years because it was too expensive to run during those times. It was a typical barn find and was restored to a very high professional standard. The Corvette is a special edition marking the 25th year of the Corvette story. It’s a one owner example with only 30,000 miles on the clock. Both cars are collector examples and are going up in value every day but Pete’s

not the type of owner who’s going to lock them up for prosperity. “It’s nice to have nice things but is even nicer to share nice things. I just love to meet people and exchange stories about their experiences with cars similar to my own and that’s why I show my cars. It’s also great to talk to the younger generation about how cars used to be and explain what it’s like to drive them. “This year I’m planning to take all three cars to as many local shows as possible and the ‘57 Chevy is also

lined up for a spot of film work as well as some promotional appearances at various locations around the city.” All three cars are fabulous in their own right and he doesn’t need any more toys right? “Err…I can’t let go of the DeLorean thing I’m afraid! It’s an historical car that wasn’t built terribly well and I know it’s one of those cars I should stay away

from but my heart is ruling my head. So, I’m still on the search for one but as a complete contrast I’m also considering a vintage Bedford bus.” I just hope Pete ends up buying both! His passion for cars is infectious and I can’t wait to get up close and personal with his latest beauties. Expect to see me salivating over these bonnets at car shows in the coming months.

JANUARY SALE @ PETROLHEAD DETAILING

The Lincolnshire based company, founded in 2010 by its directors Tom Perkins and Simon Grace are celebrating a wave of recent award recognition. In November Charles & Dean were highly commended as customer service finalists at the Peterborough Telegraph Business Awards for their exceptional offering and bespoke delivery. Then there was more as Theo Paphitis, famous for Dragon’s Den, went on to award the Stamford company his prestigious #SBS (Small Business Sunday) award, notifying his half a million Twitter followers about Charles & Dean’s philosophy of making finance more personal and straightforward. Tom Perkins told us – “We are thrilled to be recognised for our dedicated and tailored customer service. Nothing gives us greater satisfaction than delivering beyond our customer’s expectations whilst ensuring we have found the most suitable financial product for their needs.” It’s great to see local firms receiving recognition so congrats guys!

PANTHERS FREEZE COSTS If you like watching two-wheeled action there’s been good news from Peterborough Panthers speedway chiefs who’ve frozen the price of season tickets for the second time this winter.

Photo: Emma Bothamley

They initially went on sale at 2015 rates of £300 for adults and £200 for concessions before being due to rise in price soon after, but promoter Ged Rathbone has opted against increasing the cost after being blown away by the volume of sales. He said: "We have already exceeded the final tally of sales last winter and that is a terrific boost.

Give your wheels some winter pampering and stock up on treatments in the Petrolhead Detailing January sale. Owner Chris Hards is an expert on making your wheels look their best and will be on hand to give you advice on the best products to use as he’s tried them all out himself! There’s an amazing choice ready and waiting to select from the shelves with up to 20% off this month. No need to wait for internet deliveries, it’s all there at his new store in Saracen Way and you’ll find all the best brands in the business for buffing, polishing and cleaning your pride and joy.

"We have seen many existing season-ticket holders choosing to renew as well as receiving plenty of new applications. "As a way of saying thank-you from the management team to supporters, we have decided to keep the same prices in place until the end of January.” Season-tickets will remain on sale until January 29. The package includes car-parking and a programme. They are valid for all meetings except any finals the club may reach. BEING

GETTING BACK TO NATURE THIS NEW YEAR…

W

hen we transition into a new year and leave behind the old it’s often a reflective time for us personally or professionally. You may have done a bit of Feng Shui space clearing or written down new goals in the last couple of weeks or maybe you’re not even bothering as you know you are setting yourself up for a fail! If it’s the latter then we have all been there, or is that just me? Honest self-reflection can help; I have written here a few questions that might light up where you may need to make some healthy adjustments in your life. How far are you from Mother Nature and her laws? Nature’s laws are absolute, we can’t deny nature, we’re woven into the same tapestry, when we oppose these laws we can see signs in our own lack of vitality, quicker signs of ageing, lack or loss of creativity, lack of trust in our own body, needing more stimulation from our modern world and much more, here are some questions to answer – Do you consume a high percentage of packed, manufactured foods, sugar or alcohol? Are you constantly on a diet or looking for the next new diet or still running from calories? Do you watch hours of TV? Do you spend hours on social media? Do you spend hours on the internet that is a. unnecessary or b. just a distraction? Do you spend most of your time indoors? Do you spend most of your time in unnatural light?

38

www.espmag.co.uk

Do you spend hours in unnatural air conditioning? Do you exercise for hours in an air conditioned gym? Are you constantly stressed out, feeling blocked and stuck or emotionally locked down in past events? Do you spend most of your time in the city or in a built up concrete area? Do you use numerous chemicals on your face and body? Does your body work naturally i.e. good ‘daily’ bowel movements? Are you popping pills for all ailments (not those prescribed by your GP but over the counter)? Are you using lots of variety of supplements, powders and shakes? Do you sleep with your mobile phone by your bed? Use it as your alarm? Or are you constantly on it during the day? Do you leave your WiFi switched on all night?

When you tap into nature’s laws and get closer to her by getting out in the fresh air, sunlight, eating far more plant foods especially the greens, use more natural skin care, drink fresh water, take more exercise outdoors (even just a walk), stretch the body, switch off or lessen TV, social media, mobile phone use (particularly switch it off at night), add meditation or just put on sounds that relax you and turn off the continuous brain chatter, work on getting more sleep, you can feel the benefits. Also invest money into therapies that can help you release old hurts and wounds, get body work or deep massage to move the lymphatic system. Whilst it is our own personal preference where we spend our money, for me I would rather invest in a natural aromatherapy massage than a new colour on my nails… but hey, that’s just one of my loves but might not be yours but it keeps me in naturally high spirits. By making some small changes you may find you have more energy and time (and money) to put into more creative or healthier pursuits. You may find the need for the over the counter drugs may lessen (of course discuss with your GP) and importantly not relying on expensive overuse of supplements many of which are totally useless to cover symptoms that, if given time and space, Mother Nature can resolve nicely. I have now opened up my new Emerald Cleanse for next year which is on a magical exclusive island off the West Coast of Ireland. Is it time for you to retreat, renew, rejuvenate and regenerate? For more information go to my website www.karendevine.co.uk where you will find more information. Happy New Year, Karen

Do you follow celeb culture, read fashion and beauty mags to guide you on your buying and trend decisions? Whilst I could write an endless list these should be enough to get you to think about how many ‘yes’ answers and then think about how ‘often’ you do this which will give you an insight into how often you oppose nature’s laws which can be harsh on the body, mind and spirit. The best version of you awaits when you give up some or reduce some of these unnatural habits, you need to take back your own sovereignty and begin to see that true vitality is not found in this way of living. It is limited, or at least it limits us as individuals and nips off our own natural wellbeing and creativity.

Last year’s Oscar winner for Best Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Birdman) tries to finally help Leo DiCaprio snag his prized gong – and after they both received a Golden Globe nomination they’re off to a good start. Based on true events, DiCaprio stars as legendary explorer Hugh Glass – headlining an expedition of the unchartered American frontier wilderness in the 1820s – who sets out on a path of vengeance against his hunting team after they left him for dead following a bear mauling. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief – as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy) – and navigates a vicious winter to try and make it back to his family, and ultimately find redemption.

Release dates were correct at time going to press but could be subject to change.

Domhnall Gleeson (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Will Poulter (The Maze Runner) co-star in what is expected to be an Academy Award front-runner.

THE HATEFUL EIGHT

CREED

THE BIG SHORT

Eddie Redmayne tries to emulate his The Theory of Everything success with this pioneering transgender biopic. It chronicles the remarkable love story of artists Gerda (Alicia Vikander) and Einar Wegener (Redmayne) – and his gender change to Lili Elbe – with the first-ever attempted male to female sex reassignment surgery in 1920’s Copenhagen.

After several Oscar and Golden Globes gongs and noms under the direction of David O Russell, Jennifer Lawrence again headlines one of his dramas – as a woman who creates a powerful family business dynasty. This based on a true story flick, set across four generations, sees her re-team with regular Russell cohort Bradley Cooper, along with Robert De Niro.

The eighth film from Oscarwinning screenwriter and director Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction) sees a group of bounty hunters try and find shelter during a blizzard in post-Civil War Wyoming, as John ‘The Hangman’ Ruth (Kurt Russell) escorts his prized-prisoner Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh) – but it soon turns into a deadly game of betrayal and deception.

This highly-acclaimed Rocky spin-off sees former World Heavyweight Champion Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) serve as a trainer and mentor to Adonis Johnson (Michael B Jordan), the son of his late friend and former rival Apollo Creed. Reviews have been gushing for this boxing-based movie, with Sly even notching a Golden Globe nomination.

This biographical drama has also received its fair share of acclaim, as it documents four outsiders from the world of high-finance who predicted the credit and housing bubble collapse of the mid-2000s – and decided to take on the big banks for their lack of foresight and greed. Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell and Brad Pitt headline an all-star cast.

FILM REVIEW:

STAR WARS – THE FORCE AWAKENS

(12A)

Highly-acclaimed director JJ Abrams (Star Trek) has worked his magic yet again – as he brings the biggest movie franchise of all-time to a new generation. But once you throw in the Millennium Falcon, TieFighters and a hefty helping of humour – from both new and old cast members – it never falls far below the epic and grandiose spectacle that we were hoping for. In fact, it’s probably exactly what most fans will expect.

It just comes up shy of being near the classic status of an Empire Strikes Back or A New Hope – with The Force Awakens being more ‘very, very good’ than ‘exceptional’ – but this first effort from Abrams and Disney sits admirably between the originals and prequels in the pecking order of the seven Star Wars films. This excellently meshes exciting new characters – Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isacc) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) – with some of the old guard – Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Leia (Carrie Fisher), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) – to provide enough magical moments as Abrams lays solid foundations for the future. The Force Awakens’ only real problem is familiar plot devices being re-trodden – message being inserted into droid, a Death Star-esque battle and maybe a few too many similarities to previous instalments – that sometimes gives it a perfunctory feel and doesn’t quite enable it to stand out on its own maybe as much as it should.

This seventh episode continues some thirty or so years after The Return of the Jedi, with the First Order – made up of the remnants of the old Empire with re-tooled Stormtroopers – led by the intriguingly vulnerable ‘Dark Side-trained’ Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Domhnall Gleeson’s General Hux under the guidance of an Emperor-esque Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis), being the new menace in the galaxy. Their current aim is to wipe out Luke Skywalker – the last remaining Jedi knight – which leads them to the desert planet of Jakku, where hot-shot pilot Poe is acquiring a map with clues to his whereabouts. When Poe comes under attack he hides the plans inside new lovable droid BB-8 – taking over the R2D2 role in a niftier and somewhat endearing fashion (Artoo and C3-PO both make cameos too) – who soon gets taken under the wing of scavenger Rey, and they in turn cross paths with disillusioned Stormtrooper Finn. After escaping the planet in – as Rey so eloquently puts it – the ‘garbage’ that is the Falcon, which is tracked down by smuggler Solo and his loyal righthand Wookie Chewie, this new extension of George Lucas’ Star Wars universe starts to unravel

competently and rewardingly before your very eyes. This leads to the rebel group known as the Resistance, headed by General Leia – who (which will be revealed) has become disengaged from partner Solo – finally facing up to the growing power of the First Order, which starts to put its sights on destroying peaceful planets in the Republic with its new Death Star-a-like (but about five times bigger) home base, which boasts a sunpowered super weapon. The good thing is with The Force Awakens – which is a crucially important ingredient – is that you actually care for these new rebel characters, played distinctively by Ridley, Boyega and Isaac. This, combined with humour and nostalgia, breathes life into the franchise that was on life support (in some fan circles at least) after the much-maligned (if always passable) prequels. Sadly (despite one really pivotal scene that will not be spoiled here) what The Force Awakens really lacks compared to even The Phantom Menace – which had the sensational stand-out Darth Maul lightsaber battle – is one truly iconic set-piece. It never quite gives you that ‘jump out of your seat’ fist-pumping moment – but boasts loads of solid noteworthy vignettes instead that all add up during the sci-fi’s run-time. So what you get is a film that sizzles, without ever quite soaring, but it leaves Star Wars in a really great place for the forthcoming movies, spin-offs (and even theme park rides) and beyond. This Abrams and Disney collaboration has truly awakened the force once again – and it’s really strong with this one.

####

JUST CAUSE 3 (PS4/X1/PC)

The sheer explosive open world creativity just about saves this third instalment in the hit franchise from its inexcusable flaws. It impressively builds on the success of the sequel – as returning hero Rico Rodriguez looks to liberate his Mediterranean republic of Medici homeland from the brutal rule of a sadistic general – with several hundred square miles to explore (from the sky to the sea floor) and a massive arsenal of weaponry to wreak havoc.

###

Unfortunately it’s prevented from ever reaching classic status from tragically slow loading times and poor frame rate issues, which gives it an intermittently unfinished feel – and undoubtedly hampers proceedings. But if the technical issues get patched quickly – hopefully there will be just cause to add an extra mark.

KEY COMEDY NIGHT

Around this time of year, people's thoughts often turn to New Year’s resolutions. So for 2016 here are mine: To somehow persuade pop group Erasure to record a cover album of James Bond songs! As I'm sure most of you know, lead singer Andy Bell grew up and went to school in Peterborough before the lure of London and forming Erasure with Vince Clarke in 1985 happened. Currently Erasure are celebrating their 30th anniversary with Always – The Very Best Of a 3CD collection of their career so far. (See our Nov 2015 issue online for ESP music columnist Keith Dalton's write up). After 30 years of making music I'm sure Andy and Vince are contemplating what's next, so what could be lovelier than a cover album of Bond theme songs! In the nineties one of Erasure's most successful moments came

with their Abba-esque EP and accompanying video with them dressed as members of Abba. Released in 1992, it was their first and only number one on the UK singles chart so they're long overdue another. When it comes to James Bond theme songs, I really think Erasure would relish the chance to show what they can do. Their 1989 single You Surround Me (on their 30th Anniversary CD) was, an early attempt at a 'Bond' type of love song so it'd be fantastic if they revisited this kind of idea for their next project, and expand upon it with a sort of 'Bond-esque' EP/album. I doubt there is a British singer more suited than Andy Bell to tackle some of the great James Bond themes there have been, past and present. Imagine him diva-ing up as Shirley Bassey for Diamonds Are Forever, adding a soulful falsetto to Sam Smith's

The regular comedy nights at the Key Theatre kick off again next month with Jarlath Regan a rip-roaring Irish stand up comedian and the host of the global hit podcast, An Irishman Abroad. Support comes from BBC New Comedy Award winner Steve Bugeja, the truly unique Andrew McBurney and Pierre Novellie (One to watch The Independent). Box office: 01733 207239.

Writing's On The Wall and stripping back songs like For Your Eyes Only and All Time High into absolute vocal masterpieces. And just think of the fun Vince would have working with a full orchestra on The World Is Not Enough and Nobody Does It Better. Andy's love of music began as a child in our city. First in the school choir at Dogsthorpe infants and later at Kings School before he left after his O levels. He still has family and friends who live locally, so if you're one of them, please get in touch. Let's help bring my New Year’s resolution to life, because a music video with Andy dressed as James Bond and Vince as Ernst Stavro Blofeld would send the internet into meltdown. C'mon Peterborough, let's help get 'Dinger' and 'Clarkey' a much deserved return to the top of the charts!

Harry Redknapp and Barry Fry at a recent Sportsman’s Dinner

I trust you all had a wonderful time over the festive period and are now ready and raring to go for 2016! In previous columns, I’ve written about different facets of the football club and how they operate, with features on the ladies teams at the club and the successful Futsal programme. translates as ‘if you want to hear swearing, don’t miss out’. The next dinner on the agenda is with former Arsenal and Crystal Palace striker Ian Wright at the Holiday Inn, Thorpe Wood on Friday February 26. The event will be compered by talksport's very own Posh fan Adrian Durham and will kick-off at 8pm (7.30pm arrival).

There will be drinks on arrival, a three-course meal and a comedian as well as the auction and the raffle. To book call 01733 563947 or email commercial@theposh.com. Now the advert is out of the way, I wanted to share with you a story

Over the next few months we will be looking at the Posh Deaf Team and how they are showing that any form of impairment can’t stop you from following your dreams. I have talked about the wonderful work that the Free Kicks Foundation do within the community in arranging days out for disadvantaged and vulnerable children at their favourite football team. The football club also put on a

number of events throughout the year which prove successful with different types of clientele, from psychic nights to live bands and at the back end of 2015, we held a Sportsman’s Dinner with former Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp. Our very own Barry Fry is one of the best speakers on the circuit and that is probably down to what he calls a ‘selective vocabulary’, which

from a player appearance that I attended before Christmas. Players in general get a bad reputation for being a little light on the brain cells and in normal circumstances, would argue that it is not the case. In general terms, most of our players are actually intelligent. However, at a tree planting event in Werrington with PECT (Peterborough Environment City Trust), one of our players, who will remain unnamed to protect his dignity, had completed the tree planting procedure and looked pretty proud of his work. He then glanced to the side of his creation and asked the rest of the lads, what he did with the tree stump – the poor blighter had done all the work without actually planting the thing that needed to grow. At this juncture, I was going to try and fit in as many tree puns as I possible could, but I thought you might think I was barking mad. Phil

INTRODUCING:

Zoe Roberts

by Anna Ruggiero Zoe proudly tells me: “I started out in January 2012 with the determination to play a set at my birthday party 12 months later and after focusing on DJing for just three months, I gained interest from bars in Stamford. I began playing out in May 2012 and it all just went from there.” With a real mix of venues under her belt such as Tulp Bar in San Antonio and playing alongside legends such as Inland Knights under a massive inflatable igloo at The Green Meadows Festival, to regular gigs at The Solstice in Peterborough, Zoe’s success and popularity is going from strength to strength.

‘Enjoy it, engage with people and mix it up!’ It gives me great pleasure to kick start my Introducing feature for 2016 with the very talented house DJ Zoe Roberts whose genuine love and passion for music shines through in every gig she plays.

46

www.espmag.co.uk

So what’s the key to her success?

Zoe’s managed to successfully pave a name for herself on the tech house scene, once a more male dominated field and is well and truly flying the music flag for the ladies. Not only does she DJ under her name, Zoe also pioneered the popular all ladies DJ collective, Dirty House Wives.

She continues: “Building up a reputation is hard but you should never be afraid to take an opportunity or put your best foot forward when you want to get yourself into new venues and nights.

Sat 2 on the scene at the moment and my favourite is Francesca Lombardo. There does seem to be more and more joining the scene and getting recognition, which is amazing. Hannah Wants has been getting herself up there this year, which is always good for a UK artist to break through.

“I think my success has been down to playing music I love. If you’re enjoying your own sounds, it becomes infectious! My music style varies a lot, but I mainly mix tech house. I like a good base line with an old school sound. I’ve been playing around with a bit of acid house recently and disco and I love a bit of vocal, jazz, piano sounding tracks – toe tapping stuff!” So what are her thoughts on house music, female DJs and the local scene? “There are some great female DJs

Keith says... I recently hosted the Christmas Market and Light Switch-on in Market Deeping, which is always a lovely event for the festive season. The day includes live music performances from dance groups and local school choirs. This year the organisers added a couple of live bands and they both gave great performances in very adverse weather conditions. Easyersaid are a group of very talented young musicians who have already established a very strong local following. They play a very diverse range of music from The Kinks to Stereophonics and in fact claim their set list includes songs spanning 60 years. The band consists of vocalist Connor Gordon, Jordan Heather on guitar, Joe Schollar on bass and drummer Brad Caston. They gave a excellent performance on the Deeping Christmas stage and I expect to see more and more of Easyersaid on the local scene. Before that, I had just the word ‘band’ on my running order of acts performing. The reason for the brief description was because they were a group of experienced local musicians who were making their first public appearance together, and it seems, had been far too busy rehearsing to find time to discuss a name! We decided ‘The Something’ would suffice for the day. They all had experience on the local music scene previously, and it showed as they performed a great set for Deeping. It would be nice to know more about The Something as they disappeared like Cinderella after their gig. So any information would be welcomed by contacting me at my email address at the top of this page. I wish you all a Happy Live Music New Year.

IT’LL BE THE SUMMER OF ’69 ON THE EMBANKMENT AS BRYAN ADAMS VISITS CITY! enjoyed musical acclaim over the last 35 years. Some of the singersongwriter’s best-known albums were 18 Til I Die and Waking Up The Neighbours, but it was his Reckless album which truly propelled him into the stratosphere of rock music’s ruling elite. The album spawned timeless singles such as Heaven, Run to You and the raw Summer Of ‘69 (possibly in my personal top 10 of all time). Announcing the gig, Bryan said: “I’m delighted to be back on the road. It will give me an opportunity

How brilliant to hear the news that Bryan Adams has announced that he’ll be playing at The Embankment in Peterborough on Friday August 5, as part of his Get Up Tour of the UK, and it’s one of a number of outdoor shows he’ll perform in the UK in 2016. The legendary Canadian rocker has

The new album is produced by ELO leader Jeff Lynne, and features nine new songs and four acoustic versions, highlighting Adams’ unique voice and depth. The album has already provided two singles in Brand New Day and You Belong To Me. There has been no announcement yet on a support act, however if Bryan Adams performed for the whole gig on his own, he would still have to leave some of his hits out of the set list.

“It’s going to be a special show, performing outdoors in Peterborough...” to perform tracks from my latest album, Get Up, as well as some of my earlier classics. It’s going to be a special show, performing outdoors in Peterborough and I hope my fans can join me.”

It’s a real coup for Peterborough Embankment this summer – you can get your tickets on www.ticketline.co.uk or by phone on 0844 888 9991.

GET THE BLUES THIS JANUARY!

Two of the UK’s premier bluesmen visit Stamford Arts Centre this month. Founder members of The Blues Band, Paul Jones and Dave Kelly are scheduled to perform a live acoustic set on Friday January 29 starting at 8pm.

Paul, of course, is famous for fronting all of the early Manfred Mann hits as well as a very successful solo career. And over the past twenty years Paul has hosted his regular BBC Radio 2 R&B show, and quite honestly, what Paul Jones doesn’t know about the Blues can be written on a pinhead. Top guitarist Dave Kelly is a great exponent of the art of the blues

through his days with John Drummer, to his own blues band and touring with the very successful Blues Band. During his career, he’s played with legends such as James Burton and Buddy Guy. It’s a great chance to see this rare acoustic set of country blues, passionately performed by the pair of them and it’s bound to include Paul playing his beloved harmonica, and it’s going to be an occasion you’ll remember for a long while. As it takes place in the intimate atmosphere of Stamford Arts Centre, it would be best to book as quickly as possible if you’re keen on seeing a great night of blues. The Box Office is 01780 763203.

THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN

One of the hardest working bands in the UK return to the area on Saturday January 9. That’s when Limehouse Lizzy appear at The Stamford Corn Exchange. Anyone who’s seen them in their previous visits will know that they are renowned for an action-packed pyrotechnic explosion of a show.

The band continue to keep the spirit and music of Celtic rock icon Phil Lynott and his band Thin Lizzy alive. The original twin guitar sound of the band inspired groups like The Eagles and Limehouse replicate the blending of lead guitars in a spectacular way. Limehouse have latterly added a tribute into their show to ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist and solo bluesman,

Gary Moore, who was a great influence in the history of the originals.

It’s difficult to know whether the Stamford visit is part of an official tour because, quite frankly, the band never stops touring the UK. In fact a few years ago Billboard Magazine revealed that Limehouse Lizzy had topped The Performing Rights Society list for music’s hardest working UK band. Likely then that you’ll get another chance to see them in the future but the Corn Exchange is a fine venue for live music so well worth a visit. The Box Office is on www.stamfordcornexchange.co.uk
