RETRO RAILWAY IN THE LIMELIGHT Step back in time at the Nene Valley Railway Vintage and Rail Mail weekend on July 10 and 11. There’ll be plenty of old-school engines running all weekend, and you’ll get the chance to examine how the railway helped the postal system back in the day. For more info call 01780 784444 or visit www.nvr.org.uk.
The Lime Tree in Walton will be busier than ever on July 31 as they’re hosting a Family Fun Day to raise funds for Sue Ryder Care. Starting at midday there’ll be a bouncy castle, assault course, face painting, merry-go-round, fun boxing, a karate display and a BBQ and cake stall, for when all of that has worn you out! The fun continues into the evening for the adults, with the Mighty Quinn playing live and a raffle with a fantastic prize – a week in Marbella, plus £100 towards the flight. Entry to the evening’s £3, which includes a free hog roast roll.
THOMAS’ BIG WEEKEND Stuck for things to do with the youngsters this summer holiday? Take them down to the Nene Valley Railway on July 31 – August 1 for Thomas’ Big Weekend. The famous blue engine will be pulling carriages along the line to Wansford and while there you can have a tractor ride, take part in games and see the stalls at the Fete. For more information, call 01780 784444 or visit www.nvr.org.uk
the city LIVE NIGHTS @ MAMA’S Mama Liz’s have another packed month of live music throughout July – as their licence is under threat, get down there and support the venue! First up is Vince Ray on July 2 – the legendary artist comes to Stamford with his ghoulish, breakneck rockabilly that takes inspiration from 50’s American counter-culture and adds zombies, bad girls, fast cars and a fair amount of booze. On July 9 is Girl.Kill.Smile, a mysterious London electro shock trio with a very big secret, then on July 15, the Folkwit Tour 2010 calls in and features Jezz Hall, Andy Whittle and Daniel Carlson playing the best in acoustic folk. Jail Guitar Doors, mentored by Billy Bragg, play at Mama Liz’s on July 17. The charity and band were inspired by the death of Joe Strummer, all money raised buys acoustic guitars for prisoners and helps them learn a new skill and express their anger in a more constructive way. For more information, visit www.mamaliz.co.uk
JAZZING IT UP IN CATHEDRAL SQUARE A series of free weekly summer jazz has kicked off a great summer vibe in Cathedral Square and will continue through until mid-September. Each week, a band will perform a two-hour set from 2pm to 4pm with a short break so you can chill to some tunes by the fountains, hopefully in the sun. It’s great to see live entertainment in the Square – let’s have more of it! Look out this month for the CSD Brass Band on July 4, The Soham Comrades Brass Band on July 11, The Wississippi Jazz Band on July 18, Dog House Dixie Band on July 25 and Savoy Jazz on August 1.
FENLAND FAMILY FUN Take the kids along to one of the Family Fun Days, either at St. Guthlac’s School, Crowland on July 23 or at Sutton Bridge Children’s Centre on August 4. As they’re part of the South Holland Food Festival, there’ll be loads of tasty treats for you to try while you watch cooking demonstrations. Once you’ve stuffed yourselves, the kids can take part in loads of activities including the Yogabugs, Magical Movers and Tiggerz. For more information, call Holbeach Children's Centre on 01406 426064, Sutton Bridge Children's Centre on 01406 359327 or Spalding Children's Centre on 01775 712071.
GET READY FOR RANDALL ROOTZ MK4 Festival season is most definitely upon us and one of Peterborough’s best is set for a return next month on August 20 / 21 / 22. Once again ESP is proud to support this fantastic event. The Pogues tribute act The Dead Rabbits will kick the festival off in style on Friday August 20 at the Brewery Tap. These guys launched the first ever Randall Rootz back in 2007 which was set up in memory of well-known local percussionist and promoter Mark Randall who sadly lost his battle with cancer that year. Every single penny raised goes to Sue Ryder Care at Thorpe Hall, where Mark was cared for in his final months. He spent most of his life either playing music or getting bands to come to the city, and this festival organised by his friends and family aims to continue his love of music, diversity and community, meaning it has a vibe unlike any other. The full list of artists both local and international will be announced in the coming weeks but expect a rollicking good line-up to rock Charters’ beer garden as well as entertainment for the kids. The Dead Rabbits gig is ticket only but the weekend festival at Charters is free and ESP will be down there to capture the action. We’ll have full details next month. www.fandallrootz.org

‘THE BAR’ RESURRECTED WITH A HALO New Year’s Eve 2005 was a sad time for me. I’ll take you back. It was midnight. All of a sudden the girl I was playing tonsil tennis with decided to throw up over my new shoes (I can still smell the peas and carrots to this day). She left me with no choice. I had to go home – and with no cab booked – I walked the four miles.
BMWS TWO-WHEELED ANSWER TO THE M3 It’s just a few hours after test riding BMW’s brilliant S 1000 RR and I’m still grinning from ear to ear. This awesome bike has finally given BMW a competitive advantage in the heavyweight division and its Japanese and European rivals don’t know where to look. In short, this is BMW’s two-wheeled answer to its successful M3 car. It’s easier for me to start with the two things I didn’t like. The colour has a lot to answer for – acid metallic green. The best option is silver (so you can see its ‘fins’) or BMW’s famous white, red and blue racing livery. Secondly – and this is arguably down to my inexperience with sports bikes – there was a tad too much vibration through the bike when accelerating hard, but I’ll let the experts tell me “that’s sports bikes”. There is, however, so much that’s good. I was really impressed with its brakes. This bike is capable of 186 mph and reaches the speed limit quicker than it takes me to type this sentence. It sounds obvious but good brakes on a motorbike are as important as a good rack on a Page 3 girl.
My memories of a crusty pair of Diesel jeans (they dried out during the walk) and a ruined pair of shoes took the shine off what was supposed to be a celebration. Or was it a time of sadness? I was spending my New Year’s Eve in The Bar. It was the closing night – a celebration of good times but on reflection it was a sad time. The closure of The Bar has left a ‘feel-good atmosphere’ void in the city centre night scene ever since. But hopefully that’s all about to change with the re-birth of the venue under the name of Halo. In theory this place should be a gem. The operations manager, Dave Keetley (pictured), knows how to run a successful venue and the owners behind this new project are proven businessmen with considerable experience in the city’s leisure and entertainment circles. Halo will be different things to different people. At lunchtime it's a place to eat and drink. After work it's a place to wind down and relax. As the night draws in it becomes a vibrant venue with a sophisticated club feel. It's a one-stop-shop of entertainment – you can eat, drink, dine and dance. It’s open from noon Monday to Friday and from 7pm Saturday and Sunday. The daytime offering includes coffee, snacks and lunch with noodles and sushi on the menu too. Plus there’s free WIFI. Cocktails are half price from 5pm to 8pm every night and all night Sunday to Wednesday. Some of the best DJs in the UK are playing from 9pm every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There’s an over 20s policy after 9pm and the dress code is smart / casual. Best of all there’s no entrance free… yet (is that me being realistic or cynical?) Halo has 10 booths (not the Angels kind) located with a choice of away from, or close to the dance floor where you’ll get table service. Booths are secured on a first come first served basis for groups of six or more by calling 01733 555555. You can also book them by texting Halo Booth to 87202 or by visiting www.halo-peterborough.co.uk I like this place. It’s brave, stylish, different and just what the city needs. If the people of Peterborough don’t embrace it then we might as well turn out the night scene lights for good. See you there.
Then there’s the handling. The RR sucks you into bends so quickly and confidently that you just want to turn around and do it all over again and faster. And the noise – one word: orgasmic. I’d never grow tired of the noise this bike makes in full flow.
way of using his mouth by tucking into some specially prepared baps for the World Cup! BBC Radio Cambridgeshire’s Peterborough Breakfast Show presenter took listeners’ suggestions of fillings they thought should go in a World Cup bap to Swivells sandwich shop in Westgate Arcade who put them on sale.
The technology is typically BMW. There’s rain, sport, race or slick mode to ride in. Sport mode provides full engine output and race mode offers even livelier engine response. Thankfully I was able to hold on to my driver’s license by staying in sport mode on a bike that Balderston restricted to 9,000 rpm. This machine normally redlines at 14,000 rpm and has a massive 193 bhp on tap. Another trick-bit is the HP Gearshift Assist. This allows for clutchless up shifts! The result (once you get used to not grabbing the clutch lever) is supreme speed and pure unadulterated riding enjoyment. The S 1000 RR has set a benchmark. Anyone with their eye on buying a brand new top of the range sports bike should be looking no further than Balderston on Lincoln Road. Call 01733 565470 or visit www.balderston.net to test ride this addictive machine. Read my full review on www.espmag.co.uk www.es p m ag .co.u k ( July )
Paul’s own ‘creative’ concoction of condensed milk and strawberry jam (how cultured) was put on the menu with three other options:
LOVELY BAPS TO GET YOUR MOUTH AROUND Like most DJs we all know how much they like the sound of their own voices so it was great to see a patriotic Paul Stainton find an alternative
• Fish, crisps and peas (my favourite) • Vindaloo chicken • Peanut butter and jam (to mark England’s opening game with USA) If they’d asked me, I’d have definitely put a portion of salami in between one of those baps…
JOE AVATI AT KEY THEATRE IN SEPTEMBER You’ll be at the Key Theatre on September 19 at 7pm if you’re a fan of brilliant Italo-Australian comedian Joe Avati. Joe returns to the city with a show boasting new material drawn from his experiences of life around his Italian family. His unique observational brand of comedy delighted hundreds of us last time he came to Peterborough. This time he promises even more laughter at his bigger and better show based on the character and traits of Italians. Joe told me: “I’ve written lots of new material about living in an Italian family with more stories about NONNO and NONNA. I’ll also be recounting my recent visit CAUGHT IN THE ACT! to Italy from the Italians’ view and Curious about how she ep’s milk is describing the realisation I’m extracted? Go to a Roundtable event. Italo-Australian and not an Italian. I’m also going to address the differences more deeply about Italian culture compared to others including English culture. To top it off I’m joined by a brand new support act that is amazing so make sure you don’t miss it!” To book call 01733 207239 or visit www.peterboroughkeytheatre.co.uk Check out more about Joe at www.joeavati.com
MY WORD OF THE MONTH
Summer
We all love ‘summer’ in the UK and here’s why: sweat, flies, horny, cider, rain, cold, rancid armpits, thong, skin cancer, beer, algae, stress, midges, stings, sticky, flesh, close, storm, hormones, commando, dirty beaches, green water, affair and divorce.
BURN CALORIES SALSA STYLE All of the below exercises will burn around 10 calories a minute. • • • • • •
Running one mile Skipping Stepping Cycling at 13 mph High-impact aerobics Running up stairs
This is fine if you enjoy sweating like a pair of mating baboons and risk injury doing it (not the mating). A better, controlled and classy way to shed the pounds is to learn how to dance Latin style.

something my mum would make from tomatoes and store in used jam jars on the top shelf of the garden shed. But I soon discovered my two left feet were adapting well to this new pastime. The results to date are: a) I can nearly ‘dance’, b) I can burn calories with a woman in an intimate position… c) I get to wear heels like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever without being accused of having a heel fetish. Hour-long starter classes with everybodysalsa.com are on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in Fletton, March and the city centre respectively. Trust me you don’t have to know how to dance, it’s sociable, you’re keeping fit and best of all the instructors are brilliant. The Face of ESP’10
OK girls, are you ready to step out and make your mark on the world? Fancy bagging yourself some fantastic prizes and becoming a ‘face’ about town? It’s time to take the plunge and enter this year’s Face of ESP. It’s not a beauty contest, we’re looking for a girl who looks after herself but who also has the personality and that magic something. We want someone to represent ESP Magazine for a year promoting all that we have to offer and have a fantastic time while doing it. The current Face of ESP Tori Bradshaw is a great example of how an ordinary girl has been transformed by the competition. Schoolgirl one day – local celebrity the next! Gown: Swanky Rags
“Being the Face is such an achievement for me,” says Tori. “It’s meant I’ve got to experience a lifestyle which I would never have had. “It’s definitely changed me. Before the competition talking to strangers was a no no for me but now I feel I have the confidence to engage in conversation with people from all different backgrounds with many different opinions. It has done wonders for my confidence which is what I wanted to achieve when I first entered.
Over
“My best experiences so far have been The Golden Ball and meeting Hollyoaks star Ricky Whittle! I would encourage girls to enter because I’ve had the best time, and I believe it’s because this competition isn’t about beauty or talents or how you look in a swimsuit... it’s about WHO you are and what you’re about.” So come on girls – this year it really could be you living the life and bagging those fabulous prizes!

RECYCLED FASHION One person’s trash is indeed another person’s treasure as the recent Green Festival Trashion Show proved. The show in Queensgate supported by ESP aimed to show you how you can breathe new life into old clothes, recycle and refashion items into new looks. The Trashion Show was staged and organised by the City College Peterborough (formerly the Adult Education College) and featured a range of vintage items that are part of their collection, clothes from local charity shops as well as outfits created by college students. The show was compered by our own Sarah Tempest while Face of ESP Tori Bradshaw and ESP’s Becca Evans and Mikey Clarke took to the catwalk and had a great time showing just how good you can look in items that have been revamped. There was more fashion recycling at the Swish clothes swap at Thorpe Hall which was another huge success at this year’s Green Festival.

In this age of disposal fashion do the decent thing and give charity shops a chance – you’ll be surprised what you can find for a decent price! The Vintage And Retro shop on Bridge Street has some great pieces and raises cash for Sue Ryder Care so you can feel doubly good about shopping there.
If you’d like to learn about dress making and refashioning your own pieces there are loads of courses available at the City College and the new prospectus is out now. If you’d like to get involved in the next Trashion Show contact organiser Lindsey Holmes on lholmes@citycollegepeterborough.ac.uk. www.es p m ag .co.u k ( July )

SUMMER DRESSING AT ITS BEST OK so you didn’t win our competition but don’t despair, the summer sales are here and with stores like Miss Selfridge, Oasis, Burton and Next as well as all the independent stores in the Westgate Arcade you can still boost your wardrobe. Summer dressing can be a bit of a nightmare – all that exposed flesh – so let ESP style guru Sue Donnelly share a few tips on the latest trends and how to wear them...
TRIBAL/PRINT: Think of swirly, colourful abstracts or animal print. The dress or top is the showstopper so minimum jewellery is needed. Like all bright colours, these look better when the sun is shining. Warehouse, Oasis and Monsoon are great for colour. Evans for animal prints.
T-SHIRT: Comfortable and versatile. Wear as a dress, over jeans/leggings or add a jacket / waistcoat / scarf. Choose to showcase your best bits – legs, cleavage, arms and camouflage the ‘bad’. These can be dressy as well as casual. Try Top Shop, Jane Norman and River Island.
TEA DRESSES: Fifties frocks are back. Choose knee length and sleeveless and cover with a shrug if required. Team with kitten heels and a belt to get that Doris Day look. New Look and John Lewis both have a great selection. Use to showcase a tiny waist and hide heavy thighs.
Don’t like dresses?
MAXI: Most flatter the tall, slim, small busted as spaghetti straps don’t support a heavier bust. Wear flat gladiator or jewelled sandals NEVER heels. Just be careful you don’t trip. Visit Wallis, Warehouse and Miss Selfridge.
W ar eh
se
SHORTS: Available in every length from micro mini to mid calf. They can look fabulous or ghastly. Don’t look frumpy by wearing the hem on the fattest part of your leg. Unless your legs are terrific, steer clear of micro mini. Try Ted Baker and Evans for knee length denim shorts which are ultra flattering.
Don’t like your legs? TROUSERS are your friend. Available in every shape and style. Try Harem Pants for a fashionable edge mixed with comfort. Top Shop, Dorothy Perkins and H&M have them in every fabric imaginable to take you from beach to evening glamour. Linen never dates, is cool and can be dressed up or down. Try Ann Harvey and H&M for these classic staples. Cargo Pants have been reinvented, now skinnier and worn tight. Stocked by Dorothy Perkins and Topshop. If all else fails, try Utility Wear. This is a track suit bottom to you and me but narrower and worn with a tailored jacket or smarter top. Visit Topshop and Next.

SUMMER HOLIDAY WARDROBEwinners WITH ESP AND QUEENSGATE
Here are the two people we’re most jealous of at the moment – Heather Woolley and Tom Plumridge – the winners of the fabulous fashion give-away with ESP and Queensgate Shopping Centre. They won a £500 gift card each and shopped till they dropped accompanied by ESP’s style guru Sue Donnelly who gave some great advice on what would suit them best. With dozens of fashion outlets in the centre they were spoilt for choice and Tom was soon spending his prize getting some great new gear from John Lewis and Burton – “This was great timing as I’m just off on holiday. Sue’s been helpful about what colours I should go for and I’ve enjoyed it a lot.” The lucky winners: Tom Plumridge and Heather Woolley
Heather was just as delighted with her prize and added – “I love accessories and could buy everything from Style in Westgate Arcade but I’ve chosen some dresses and bags to match. I’m petite so Sue’s advice on trousers was useful. I’m having great fun spending it all!”
guys CLASSIC: The blazer and flannels combo gives the 21st century twist. The Blazer is edged with piping, single breasted and easy to wear. Visit Topman, H & M and River Island. Wear with a waistcoat if you dare. Team with jeans or trousers. CHECKS: Gingham is everywhere, adding colour to the wardrobe. Wear a short sleeved, fitted shirt over a T-shirt (logo’d or plain) with shorts for an ultra cool look. Try Next, Topman and H & M.
SHORTS: A British staple but not with socks and sandals! Revolution, Next, New Look and H&M all stock a wide variety. Think lean and tailored rather than big and baggy. If you can’t part with jeans, visit Clues or Arcadia. POLO SHIRTS: More classic, and flattering, than a round necked T-shirt. Fred Perry, tennis hero and style icon, has colours and sizes to suit everyone. Try Arcadia, John Lewis or Burton for their own brand. Horizontal stripes widen the chest area so can flatter but not for those with a beer belly though.

Men are never sensible when it comes to sun protection so the trilby is a god send. Wear with open fitted shirt / T-shirt combination, shorts, jeans or linen trousers. Also a trend for ladies. Try Claires, M & S and New Look for gals and Topman for guys.

STAMFORD PUB BEER GARDENS Summer’s always the time to enjoy a few drinks in a sunny beer garden and with the World Cup on this summer I couldn’t think of anything better! Stamford prides itself on being a town full of great pubs with beer gardens so I thought I’d name check a few of my favourites in town.
Firstly The Green Man, fresh with its new owners and summer BBQs is definitely a top spot! The Lord Burghley – great with
Fact Of The Month The George Hotel in Stamford has played host to many celebrities recently including Jonathan Ross, fashion guru Gok Wan (spotted by our former Face of ESP Claire Smith no less!) and Radio One’s breakfast star Chris Moyles!
Q&A ...with Andy Goodacre from March To The Grave
RIVERSIDE FESTIVAL MY TOP 3 BANDS OF THE FESTIVAL! This year’s Riverside Festival line-up has been announced and I’ve picked my three must see bands. Don’t miss the Festival after-party on the Sunday July 4 at The Toreador pub where I’ll be finishing off the Festival weekend in style with my band The Meizters!
This month I tip my hat to one of Stamford’s most loved punks, Andy Goodacre from March To The Grave. For 30 years he’s been thrilling crowds in this town and maybe it’s about time I give praise to a geezer who was tearing it up when I was merely a sperm!
The Brays
The Brays take to the Riverside stage on Saturday July 3 and I can’t praise my good friends enough. They’ve had chart success and released two fantastic singles along with a great video (with little cameos from ESP’s own Pep Cipriano and Zilchy!) Don’t miss them!
Andy started a band with his mate Rick aka Rocky Starr in the summer of ’79, both were punks on the streets of Stamford and Peterborough growing up with local bands like The Destructors and Kiosk 2. March To the Grave soon became more than just a band – it was a way of life, an attitude of mind. They always tried to entertain audiences not just with music but with a stage show as well. Andy says – “If people leave a Grave gig in a better mood than they came to it then my job is done. Thirty years on these principles still stand true. The band have always written their own music and will carry on doing so, this has the great advantage that if you make a mistake nobody will notice! Thanks to all who came to our 30 year party – you guys make it. We started off as the people’s band and that’s where we intend to stay.”

host some great DJs over the summer including Steve McGurk on July 3, Riverside Festival weekend!
www.es p m ag .co.u k ( July )
The UK’s only Pogues tribute band are closing the Riverside Festival on Sunday July 4 on the Acoustic stage. The Rabbits successfully recreate the energy and aura of the legendary folk/punk band. They’ve built up an enviable reputation for their raucous gigs, which are invariably packed to the rafters with fans young and old singing along to MacGowan’s classic, anthemic songs!
“We once played three different counties on the same day. We started at Cambridge nurses’ home, then a punk fest in Huntingdon in the afternoon and finished with a gig at The Royal Mail pub Leicester. We left a trail of broken hearts across the Midlands… or was it broken tables?” What five bands would be in your dream festival line up? “Sex Pistols, The Damned, Ian Dury And The Blockheads, The Rubber Band and UK Subs.” What’s your favourite thing about being in Stamford’s longest running punk band? “The screaming fans and the endless hours of adoration buying THEM drinks. Grave world never changes, come and join it – if you dare.”
THE NO.1 VENUE FOR STAMFORD, PETERBOROUGH & SURROUNDING AREAS
NEW OWNERS @ GREEN MAN A big Stamford Calling welcome goes out to the new folk who’ve taken over at The Green Man; James Pallash and Asia Rdzawska (pictured). James is an original Stamford lad and has spent the last few years up north training in mixology and managing a Michelin rated restaurant. James’ approach to taking on the pub is quite simple – if it’s not broken don’t fix it – he wants to keep the vibe of a village pub in a town centre and keep a nice family atmosphere. They’re offering a free BBQ during England games and their beer festival in September will include live bands, a selection of world beers, real ales and ciders. Look out for a new fresh lunchtime menu coming soon!

Confessions... Susan Saunders
(What a…) Carry On Cleo… On the tenth day of uninterrupted, all-inclusive bliss on my summer holiday last month in Egypt I sat sipping cocktails, dangling my toes in the Mediterranean sea and wondered if this was the life that Cleopatra had been accustomed to. The cocktail I was enjoying was the sixth drink that had been delivered to me on the beach, without me having to move a muscle. I’d enjoyed my spot on a secluded private paradise beach after I’d finished my breakfast of whatever I’d fancied. I was lying on my complementary beach towel, freshly laundered and pressed that morning. I knew that when my boyfriend had had enough of my “it’s too hot” whimpers he’d insist we return to our upgraded room, which would’ve been cleaned top to bottom, with a new ‘towel animal’ created by our cleaner, Kaled.
susan.saunders@espmag.co.uk
Tucking the towel into my larger smalls (the bottom half of the body smalls) he moved on to my back. It was a full-body massage like I’d never had before – seriously amazing. His etiquette was impeccable, which was a relief because I’d been slightly concerned about having a male masseur, rather than a female. He undid the back of my bra as all masseurs do to properly massage my back. I turned on to my back as he shielded my bottom half with the towel to protect my modesty and I settled on to the bed again. Just as I was almost drifting off to sleep I was rudely awoken. I felt quite exposed all of a sudden. That was because he’d only gone and whipped my bra off – the cheeky bumsker! Forget the tucking the towel in to protect my modesty because this was protect-your-modestyI-think-not! I, obviously sat up like a shot, completely alarmed and he looked at me funny as if I was the one not acting normal!
Anyway, enough of all that, you get the general idea – it was heaven!
He asked what the problem was and as the bra was halfway across the other side of the room I couldn’t just grab it back. He insisted it was a classic Egyptian massage. I insisted that I be covered up immediately with a small towel as he’d seen more than enough!
In the spirit of things I decided that I’d go for the ultimate in relaxation by booking myself in for a massage.
The massage ended not long afterwards, thankfully. I just couldn’t relax any longer and I rushed back to my sun lounger to recall my Adam and Eve tale.
My legs were quite tired because the day before we had travelled five hours into Cairo to see all of the sights and Pyramids, which was incredible but included a lot of walking, which as you may have gathered, was something on this holiday we hadn’t been used to!
Massages and holidays are supposed to be enjoyed, not endured, so I figured I’d stick to the previous formula to really enjoy my holiday. Relaxation, sun, fun and cocktails. Be warned my friends. If you ever fancy a massage on holiday – you may get more than you bargained for!
Taking my position at the pearly gates, otherwise known as the massage room, I was feeling very much like the cat that got the cream. Ignoring the masseur’s googly eyes, I stripped down to my smalls and hoisted myself up (derriere facing away from him) on to the massage bed. Up the legs, down the legs, up the legs, down the legs his hands went, paying attention to my long-neglected feet and toes. It was absolutely blissful. The masseur was very good and friendly enough without talking too much as I was enjoying the whale music a lot more.

HOT HOLIDAY HAIR Summer’s here so whether you want a new summery look or tips on how to cope with holiday hair problems look no further…
MAKE-OVER MAGIC AT STYLISTICS HAIR SALON Lucky Emma Branch was the winner of ESP’s recent make-over competition, courtesy of the Stylistics Hair Salon at the Westgate Department Store in Peterborough. To start their new look, Emma and her friend were treated to St Tropez spray tans ensuring that essential glowing summer look. Both girls received manicures for that polished look and to finish the make-over, both girls received a cut and colour treatment.
I’ve had a chat to a couple of our local hair experts to get their tips for making you look beach gorgeous in no time! Sunny days often mean you fancy a lighter look but if you want to be a beach blonde getting the right blonde for your colouring is the key to success. Kris from Michael John told me – “If you’re naturally a soft blonde going the whole hog should be fairly simple but a word of caution, if you’ve never done it before the general rule is start gently. Less is often better until you get used to it. It’s much easier to add more than to have to tone it down and much less traumatic. “Having said this if you have done it before or if you are the braver type of person then the all over blonde gives a much more striking look that stands out in a crowd like Lady Gaga or Pixie Lott. If you are a little darker, say dark blonde to light brown, then the more subtle looking blondes using different tones creating movement and light are very fashionable, as seen on Gwyneth Paltrow. There are also golden blondes for darker bases to create warmth as seen on Eva Mendes and Jennifer Lopez which can look absolutely fabulous on dark hair.” Jetting off on holiday this summer = good times, but battling against dry, frizzy hair = bad times. With the humidity and heat to contend with it’s often a nightmare to style your hair. Hair Xclusive’s Tony Manganiello advises you wear a hat to protect your hair from the sun’s harmful rays and although it can be hard, especially if, like me, you manage to get suntan lotion in your hair, you should try to shampoo your hair less on holiday to allow it to absorb its natural oils which will stop it from getting so dry. Tony also recommends applying a deep conditioning treatment to hair (dry or damp) and wrap it in cling film or a shower cap, allowing it to really soak into damaged hair. Try leaving it overnight if you can for extra moisturising benefits. Control frizzy hair by popping it back into a pony tail, plait or even a chic bun and depending on your hair type, you could spritz with a shine spray to tame frizz too but don’t use too much or hair will end up looking greasy and flat. Try to drink plenty of water too to keep your hair moisturised from the inside out. Finally, Tony advises you give your hair a break from hairdryers and straighteners by leaving your hair to dry naturally or plait it whilst still damp to create soft curls as it dries, giving you the perfect beach babe look. If you can’t survive without straightening your hair though make sure you use a heat protection spray and only run them through your hair once.

Emma told ESP – “I have never won anything before, so this experience has been very exciting. The Stylistics team recommended a full head of highlights and a stylish cut to complement my face shape. I am thrilled with my new look.” Emma’s friend, Julie Lynch added – “I had a complete re-style and colour, with a flash technique using 2 colours and then a full head of colour to create a stunning mix of shades. I am ecstatic with the transformation and have even booked my next appointment with Stylistics!” The Stylistics Salon is located on the first floor of the Westgate Store, next to the electrical department. They’re open Monday to Friday, 9am – 5.30pm, with a late night Thursday until 8pm. For more info call 01733 565622.

GET BRONZED AT BANNATYNE The team over at Bannatyne Spa in Werrington tell me they’ve launched their very own spray tan range – an odourless spray tan which lasts up to seven days. Although there are some fabulous products out there that can help us achieve a sun-kissed glow there’s always one downside to them – the smell! Smelling like digestive biscuits for days after you’ve applied it is never nice and is a tell -tale sign that you’ve ‘faked’ your tan. The Bannatyne Spray Tan is the perfect tan for the summer as it doesn’t give off the biscuit odour and only takes 15 minutes. It’s airbrushed on by a specialist in their relaxing spa facilities, lasts up to seven days and I’m told it’s streak free. Costing just £15 why not treat yourself? It’s cheaper than a holiday but you’ll still have the healthy glow that goes hand in hand with jetting off to a paradise island. Call 0845 434 8466 or visit www.bannatynespa.com

HEREWARD’S 30 YEARS
ESP Editor Sharon McAllister celebrates the 30th anniversary of Hereward Radio… I can still remember the excitement we all felt when my friends made their Hereward Radio debut and as we listened back to ourselves on the cassette tapes our families had recorded us on! The city’s new local radio station had set down its roadshow at Werrington Community Centre and my friends were picked out by DJ Stewart Francis to take part in an on-air competition. OK so it wasn’t the Radio One Big Weekend or anything but this was BIG… well for us anyway! It was the first time we had a local radio station broadcasting just for us and little did I ever imagine that one day I’d be working there, let alone reading the news.
Hereward Radio in the former pub Rose and Crown
This month I’ll be celebrating the 30th anniversary of Hereward Radio at a reunion on July 10 and reminiscing about the days when commercial radio exploded into our living rooms and a new broadcasting era began. The station was named after the legendary 11th century Anglo Saxon rebel Hereward the Wake and broadcast round-the-clock programming as part of the nationwide emergence of independent radio. Soon cars around the city sported ‘I go to bed with Hereward’ stickers and listeners were taking part in quizzes like Pick Your Poison. Hereward Radio began life in a former Bridge Street pub – The Rose and Crown but seven years later it relocated to brand new purpose-built studios on the top floor of the new Queensgate Centre. It was in the late 80s that I joined the team originally answering the phones on the Hereward Helpine and eventually joining the news team. Former news editor at the station and BBC and Anglia TV
Rob Jones
Kev Lawrence
freelance journalist Pat Beasley, now retired and living in Spain told ESP – “I have many happy memories of the time I once spent with Hereward. Apart from its entertainment value it provided a launch pad for many young journalists and presenters who went on to make their mark in the wider world of radio and television entertainment.” Many local presenters like Rob Jones, Simon Potter, John Bradley, Steve Allen and Kev Lawrence remain in the city, of course Kev fronts what’s now become Heart as Hereward was bought out and renamed. Former Hereward presenter Paul Stainton now hosts the BBC’s Peterborough breakfast show and many others from Hereward went on to establish Lite FM, now relaunched as Connect. Former Hereward breakfast show presenter, and ESP’s Wickedly Perceptive columnist Sarah Tempest hosted the show for three years with Matt Jarvis and says it was a great era – “They were some of the maddest but best times of my life and many a time he and the listeners made me laugh ’til I cried. It was a dream job and we met so many amazing people during that time, including the people we ended up marrying!”

A NEW VOICE FOR PETERBOROUGH This month a new radio station takes to the airwaves in the city broadcasting throughout the Peterborough Festival and hoping to gain a full time license. Radio Peterborough is a new, not-for-profit community station broadcasting for one month on 102.2FM. It’ll initially include everything you need to know about the Festival but after that it’ll include all local news and views with a Radio 2 style music policy.
Keith and Claire
The faces behind the project are Wayne Fitzgerald and Peter Tibbs who both have significant experience in broadcasting with Wayne originally launching Lite FM.
Wayne told ESP – “We want this to be a truly community station for Peterborough and need to hear from anybody who wants to be involved in this exciting project.” The station sees a return to the airwaves for the popular Keith & Claire show which ran for ten years on Lite FM and Keith Dalton, now also a writer for ESP, told us – “It’s wonderful to see a move to bring real local radio back to Peterborough. I’m looking forward to locking horns with my regular Saturday adversary once again!”
www.es p m ag .co.u k ( July )
Wayne Fitzgerald and Peter Tibbs
In the longer term, Radio Peterborough has ambitions to establish a Radio Academy which will train local people of any age who have an interest in broadcasting and the media.
Peter Tibbs told ESP – “It’s been a personal aim of mine to bring a training academy to the city to help give young people some direction. I’ve been involved in one in Corby which has been a great success. It feels good to put something back into the community.” If you’d like to be involved in Radio Peterborough email info@radiopeterborough.co.uk or call 01733 704123 (Monday to Friday 9am till 4pm).
Weekday Schedule on 102.2FM 7am – 9am Chris Holland 9am – 12pm Keith Dalton 12pm – 2pm Wayne Fitzgerald 2pm – 5pm Tom Hooper 5pm – 7pm Dave King Pete T’s 70’s show runs in the evenings

ASTON’S BACK ON HOME TURF! This is it, the month Peterborough popstar Aston Merrygold returns home a boyband hero. The Brit Award winner and his JLS band mates will perform live for city fans and he told ESP he can’t wait… “To come back and perform in Peterborough will be great, absolutely amazing. It’ll be everyone who’s seen you grow up, and such a crazy vibe – it’ll be so much fun.” The concert on the Embankment on Sunday July 18 is set to be the biggest Peterborough has seen. The former Jack Hunt School pupil, JB, Marvin and Oritsé will headline the show supported by X Factor co-star and last month’s ESP cover girl Diana Vickers as well as Diversity from Britain’s Got Talent among others.
there’s a lot going on,” Aston told ESP, “and I’m not afraid to throw a back flip or two but we’ve got some new tricks up our sleeves. The tour’s incredible, we’ve had really good reviews. I think we’ve surprised a lot of people. “It’s a very exciting time for us, it’s all new and we’re trying out new stuff and experimenting.”
While it’s getting harder and harder for Aston to show his face in Peterborough these days, he’s working at keeping his links with his home town – “I try and get home even if just for an hour, but mum’s more than happy to come and see me. I speak to her every day anyway. “I’d hope to stick around after the show, but I very much doubt it. I used to have time to go out but with the tour and our profile now it’s pretty much impossible. We wouldn’t change anything for the world though – when performing we’re at our happiest.” The Peterborough gig will come hot off the heels of JLS’ latest single release – the first from their second album. The enormous club track, The Club Is Alive, will be released on July 5. The single is a change in direction for the boys, mixing dance beats with soulful melodies and a hook many would recognise. Sounding like you’ve never heard them before, the single shows why everybody’s in love with JLS. The as-yet untitled second album will be released on November 22. The guys are currently in America recording more tracks for the album ahead of its autumn release date. Then they’ll embark on a massive arena tour in December / January 2010 / 11 that will see them play over 35 venues throughout the UK and Ireland. Before then though, we get to see JLS on Aston’s home turf! “Anyone who’s seen our tour will know www.es p m ag .co.u k ( July )
The gig is being promoted by Heart radio and breakfast presenter Kev Lawrence told ESP – "Having followed the boys since before they were famous, it's so good to see them coming back for such a massive show in Peterborough. Since they walked into our studios as four unknowns, way before the bootcamp stages of X Factor, we always knew they had both the talent and the drive to make a success of themselves. They sang some acapella stuff and blew us away with how great they sounded, and how together they seemed as a band. “The Peterborough connection with Aston just adds to the interest, and we can’t wait for the gig. The best thing of all about JLS for us, is how nice they are as people – humble, grounded, and appreciative of all their support." Tickets are £28.50 for JLS on 08712 200 260 or at www.gigantic.com, HMV on Cathedral Square and the Destination Centre, Bridge Street, Peterborough. www.JLSofficial.com PARKING… There’s limited parking around the Embankment so Queensgate will be opening all four of their car parks extra late, until 11.30pm, on Saturday July 17 for the Back To The 80s concert and on Sunday July 18 for JLS concert goers. As the JLS concert falls on a Sunday fans can park all day at Queensgate for just £1.

THE ESP PAPARAZZI CREW TAKE A VOYAGE TO HOLLYWOOD AND THE RIVER… This month we made a ‘Voyage to Hollywood’ for the launch of the city’s new community cinema at Voyager School in Walton. We didn’t want to be late for this very important date as they were screening Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and had made it a red carpet affair. Our very own Alice, former Face of ESP and columnist Susan Saunders joined Miss Peterborough and the Heart Angels to judge the fancy dress and to meet and greet the crowds. They’d made a real effort with the whole thing so congratulations to Louise Hill and all the team for a great night. The next screening will be Clash of the Titans on Friday July 30, Iron Man 2 on Friday August 27 and Street Dance on Friday September 24. Our thanks to Harlequin in Fengate for supplying Susan’s fantastic Alice costume – if you need a costume for any event pop in to St David’s Square or give them a call on 01733 896758. Next up the ESP Paparazzi team hit the Dragon Boat Race on the Embankment with Mike Harris behind the lens. Thirty five crews took part as the sun shone and around 6,000 people enjoyed the action and the bankside entertainment including a fabulous Chinese Lion Dance. BBC Radio’s Peterborough breakfast team fronted by presenter Paul Stainton put in a noble performance but it was Sawtry Community College who were eventually crowned 2010 champions and Tulip Ltd the runners up. A big well done to the Charity Champions, Accent Nene/Fosters who raised over £3,360 out of a total raised on the day of more than £10,000 for the official charity, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, plus a further £5,000+ for other local charities. Crown Packaging UK Plc & Premier Foods were the 2010 Mixed Champions with the Joint Nature Conservation Committee the runners up.

Katie’s back and receiving higher praise than ever. ESP’s Susan Saunders chats to Miss Melua about her new album… Most 25 year-olds are either finding their feet as a junior in their chosen profession, keeping at bay dreams of superstardom, or they have no idea what they want to be ‘when they grow up’. The dreams of most are a reality for Katie Melua who can boast a CV almost as impressive as building the Great Wall Of China (which Katie’s walked), including being the UK’s bestselling female artist in 2006. Years later, after dining at Buckingham Palace with the Queen, performing for Nelson Mandela and now on her fourth album, The House, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Katie hasn’t got a great deal left to achieve. I caught up with her to talk life and to find out what her new album and forthcoming track are all about. “The House is my fourth album and it’s the first time that I’m not working in the same way as I did with my first three,” Katie explained. “It was time for me to try something a bit different. The main theme of the album, if there was one, is about exploring the imagination and going really far into my head and seeing how far I can take my mind.” The next single to be released from her chart topping album is called A Happy Place, which is out this month. “It’s lyrically in the same family as the first single (from the album The House), The Flood,” said Katie. “The Flood was inspired by some of the Georgian folk music that I know and lyrically it was about all of the lessons I’ve learnt in life and everything I’ve believed about life and how I’ve perceived the world. A Happy Place is a different approach to the same theme.” Some musical greats worked on Katie’s most recent material, all of which was written or cowritten by her. Is there anyone else Katie would like to work with? “I never say never to anything. I’m a real believer in trying everything out of life.” Now, if you’re anything like me you’d have listened to many a Katie Melua track such as Nine Million Bicycles, and if you are anything like me, you’d have thought somewhere along the line, as beautiful as this song is, what does it mean? “Ultimately it’s a love song,” Katie explains, “but it’s put in the context of this incredible world that www.es p m ag .co.u k ( July )
we live in and how all the quirky and unusual things that are going on in it and how underlying it all is love. “I’m a bit dubious about messages in songs. Songs are just songs. I do believe in their magic but the reason why they’re magical is that it’s the most interactive piece of art you could have. When you listen to a song, it’s about the listener putting their relationship into that song and associating it with how they felt.”

Katie Melua has a unique style, which could be attributed to the many musical influences in her life – Queen (who Katie once performed with), Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Kenneth Cohen. As Katie is currently single – “I’m telling myself I’m happy about it,” – her pet dog Ripley (name inspired by Sigourney Weaver from Alien) keeps her company when she’s at home. As much as many of us might dream of her level of success, Katie tells me she would be a scuba diver if she wasn’t a multi-million selling singing sensation. In fact Katie had a near-death experience last November when trying to gain her dry-suit certificate after choking when practising taking her mask off under water. Surprisingly it didn’t put her off! Aside from the close call underwater Katie says her biggest obstacle to overcome is her own mind. “Every time something’s happened where I’ve had a horrific experience, like not being confident enough in my work or as a writer or the scuba diving, it’s been because my mind hasn’t been clear and calm. Whereas when I feel completely at peace and I’ve found true clarity, everything seems to be so much easier.” I got the impression from speaking to Katie that despite her successes, she’s still very much down to earth. Her spare time’s spent catching up with friends (she was going to lunch with her best friend Polly after our interview), who would describe her as – “stupidly fearless, a bit weird and obsessed with music.” On the one hand, you see an established pop princess and on the other, just a normal, charming young woman. Katie didn’t chase dreams of superstardom, instead focusing her energies on not wanting to lose that “butterfly feeling” that she felt when hearing her mother playing Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and trying to “keep that feeling alive.” Despite just trying to not ‘lose that feeling’, with number ones in the UK and Europe, selling millions of albums and performing a gig under the sea, it’s clear to see, Katie’s achieved a whole lot more. www.katiemelua.com

IRON MIKE HITS THE BORO! It's happening! Sporting legend Mike Tyson is coming to Peterborough on July 15 for a special one-off event in the city where you can spend a rare evening in the company of the 'baddest man on the planet'. Tyson has just started a 40 date tour and the Peterborough show’s being held at the fantastic new EXEC exhibition centre on the East of England Showground and ESP will be there to capture the action. Stewart Howe, spokesman for Boxing Promotions Ltd told ESP interest in the night has been incredible – “Our allocation of VIP tickets sold out within the space of 24 hours but we have a number of theatre-style tickets left for £30. There’ll also be an opportunity for a meet and greet session with Tyson and to buy a photo of you with the big guy himself for an additional charge of £40. It’ll be a night you won’t forget!” It’s a major event for the city and the night includes Tyson giving a talk on his life and career. Some of his fights will be shown on the big screen so you can relive those amazing moments, other top boxers will be in attendance like two time heavyweight champ Tim Witherspoon as well as boxing presenter Steve Bunce and there’ll be a unique oil painting completed on the night which you can bid for. If you’re the lucky one it will feature you as the referee in the picture depicting Tyson taking on Ali, plus Mike Tyson will sign it too!
Mike – “Mike Tyson is one of the most controversial and charismatic sportsmen of our age. We think it’s a real coup to get him to Peterborough as the city hasn’t seen an event of this magnitude before. It’s an opportunity for people to see him in person for a lot less money than it would usually cost.”
Stewart Howe says the buzz about the night is building and hundreds of boxing fans can’t wait to meet Iron
It’ll be a fantastic night like no other and the £30 tickets are available on 01733 311549 or see www.tysonpeterborough.com.
BEST OF THE BEER FEST Peterborough Beer Festival is one of the highlights of the city’s summer calendar and this year it’s set to be even better! Running from August 24 – 28, the layout of the site has been revamped to make life easier for visitors and staff alike – this includes a covered walkway and that festival essential, more toilets. As well as literally hundreds of beers, perries and ciders for you to sample, there’ll be live music every night from acts such as Shake Hands Eric, Lime Shark, the League of Mentalmen and The Who tribute, Who’s Who, as well of lots of other bands.
IN THE DEEP(ING) END The Deeping Raft Race returns on August 8 as its reintroduction last year was a massive success. Sticking to the new format, this year’s event will be even better, with Keith Dalton compering, live music from Spirit, Hooker, The Replicas, The Guards and Mauricky Collins. There will also be a visit from Peterborough Lambretta and Vespa Scooter Club, funfair rides and stalls up and down the high street. Of course, you could just watch people fall into the river as all the rafts are home-made by competitors and every year, a few disintegrate! All money raised goes to local charities and Help For Heroes, which is why this year’s fancy dress theme is uniforms – think soldiers, police, maybe even nurses. Organiser Nick Ash told ESP – “Everybody’s really excited about the Raft Race. It’s going to be a great day so come and support our heroes – last year’s race went down a storm!” Make a weekend of it, with the Raft Race Dance at Deeping School on August 6 – headlining is one of the UK’s best party bands, Crazy Ape and there’ll also be a disco. Tickets are selling fast, so book now! To enter the Raft Race, call 07989 367052 or visit Liv Slater www.deepingsraftrace.co.uk.

The Beer Festival is the perfect chance to try new real ales, but there are a few different tasting tactics. The best is to grab a programme and read the descriptions – if the bar isn’t busy, the volunteer staff will usually let you taste a few beers before you buy a pint. Other methods include going for the strongest brews, which ALWAYS ends badly (ESP’s Andy Slater still bears the scars) or going for the ones with rude names – last year’s Festival had such delights as Slag lager and Golden Shower Ale. ESP will again be hosting the lunchtime quiz with Ian Gray. They’re always looking fro volunteers to help so if you want to get involved email info@beer-fest.org.uk or call 01733 896555 / 07900 056940. Liv Slater
80S STARS IN THE BORO It’s time to relive the 80s and get those headbands, legwarmers, face paint and shoulder pads on for a fantastic concert on the Embankment! The Riverford Travelling Field Kitchen is about giving people the chance to taste veg at its very best and get some practical help in how to cook at home. Are you getting your sunshine drug? Just as I write this it’s cold, grey and pouring with rain, so let’s hope by the time you read this we have a return to those rays of sunshine that elevate our mood, lift our spirits, make us feel a whole lot healthier and give us a bit of get up and go!
Vitamin D is made in high doses from sunlight under skin but we also have mechanisms built in which stop us getting Vitamin D toxicity from the sun.
The sunshine also brings a vital fatsoluble nutrient called Vitamin D which we all need from birth, but you just might not be getting enough of it!
The age old advice is that we need Vitamin D to help build strong teeth and bones which is true but over the past few years more information continues to show that it may have much more potent benefits for helping to prevent chronic diseases such as –
We find Vitamin D in very few foods but the main sources would be oily fish, milk, some mushrooms, some soya produce, egg yolks and cod liver oil. You also find Vitamin D added to cereals etc. but many of these are refined cereals or heavily manufactured produce so I wouldn’t always recommend them.
Autoimmune disease Some cancers Diabetes High blood pressure Autism M.E. Depression Bone and muscle pains Skin diseases... and more
“The sunshine also brings a vital fatsoluble nutrient called Vitamin D” So that leaves the most important source of our Vitamin D coming from none other than our sun. The UVB rays hit the skin and stimulate the production of Vitamin D (which is actually a hormone), it then continues to be converted by your liver, kidneys and also on every cell of the body.
All of these types of disease have increased and low Vitamin D levels may play a role in their development! We have to look at how this can be happening. You may think that if the sun is out we get plenty. But if you think about it,
through the winter months we get very little sunshine, or in the summer when the sun is out we slap on the sunscreen and hats – which is extremely good advice to prevent sun damage – but the UVB rays can’t get to the skin to make the vital vitamin. Or you may cover up completely so the sun can’t get to you. Skin protection is very important but during the summer months to boost our Vitamin D levels we ideally should allow 20-30 mins exposure around midday when the sun is at its highest peak, showing as much skin as possible (I don’t mean skinny bathing in the garden here!) to allow nature to takes its course and produce the health giving Vitamin D. After this then cover up and/or put on the sun protection needed. Other factors that can cause low Vitamin D status Where we live (i.e. the northern hemisphere gets less sun) Size – the more fat cells the less Vitamin D available Fat free diets Celiac disease Skin colour Age We also need what we call co-factors to help use Vitamin D such as magnesium, zinc and Vitamin K. Old guidelines say we only need 200iu-
400iu but this may prove to be extremely low levels and that the recommended amounts may increase to a much higher level, and that acknowledging the different variables in people have to be considered!! Having studied Vitamin D levels for some time, I’ve seen tests returning with a high percentage of people having low levels. Supplementing this vitamin can help but always take advice before supplementing your diet with higher levels of Vitamin D, taken orally it can be toxic in high doses. If you have kidney disease please discuss with your GP first. Enjoy the sunshine, try to get your daily dose but look after your skin with some healthy (non toxic) sun screen. Karen For more information on Vitamin D ask your GP for his/her advice or you can get in touch with me via my website www.karendevine.co.uk or www.devinedetox.co.uk for further information.

Traditional pub with a warm, welcoming atmosphere
The Wheatsheaf staff promote Shrek 4... sorry, I mean the World Cup!
Peterborough’s been going
FOOTBALL CRAZY! While everyone seems to have gone World Cup mad, ESP’s Mikey Clarke wonders if he’s the only guy who doesn’t get footy… I’ve had many awkward conversations down my local pub. There’s an unwritten rule that guys should be able to be in a bar and know everything about women, beer and football. Unfortunately I know nothing about footy (and not much about women either). Despite not understanding the excitement of watching a ball get kicked around for 90 minutes, I decided to make an effort with the World Cup... after all; I’d like to see my home country doing well although sadly that didn’t last long! After Googling ‘footy chanting songs’ and learning a few of the players’ names, I headed off to town and watched my first proper game of footy. For me, just being in an England shirt and watching an entire match while they were in was extreme, however, this is nothing compared to the way that other locals supported the World Cup. You don’t have to be a huge football fan to notice how over the last few weeks, Peterborough went football crazy. Firstly, co-owner of local restaurant Toscanini, Paolo Bianchi, was absolutely convinced that his beloved Italian team could easily out do England this year! So when local Posh player Craig Mackail-Smith dropped by for some dinner, he made a wager with him. The agreement was that if England progressed further than Italy, he had to clean Craig’s boots for him all next season. But, if Italy did better than England, Craig would have to work ten shifts in the restaurant kitchen! Like good sports, they also agreed that if the two teams were knocked out at the same stage they’d both take their forfeits. But with Italy making an early exit I’m not sure if Paolo will be sobbing more about the performance of his team or the fact he’ll now be washing those boots alongside the dishes for quite some time.
BBC Peterborough's breakfast show presenter Paul Stainton orders his lunch at Swivels in Westgate Arcade... surely that's not all his!
You may also have heard that local taxi firm Peterborough Cars decided to express their passion for the World Cup in a generous way. For every England goal scored, the staff made a pact to make a donation to the local charity, Sue Ryder Care. OK, so that wasn’t many for England but every donation makes a difference! It’s a good job I was starting to adjust to this World Cup idea, as everywhere I went someone had a flag
www.es p m ag .co.u k ( July )
Craig discovered the hard way what happens when you don't pay the bill.
hanging from their car or their homes. Some (normal) people decided one flag was acceptable, whereas others I noticed had taken it to the extreme! Take my mate Robert Hardingham for example. The local club DJ intended putting up just the one Fabio banned players from flag, but was then having WAGs at the game... this rule obviously didn't apply infected by footy to himself. madness and covered the house with ten of them! Shame it didn’t bring England better luck. And this was one of my favourite World Cup ideas to come out of the Boro... Staff at The Wheatsheaf pub on Eastfield Road changed their names by deed poll to Wayne Rooney. Yep, I’m not kidding. Eleven of the staff decided to keep the name Rooney until England got knocked out. It didn’t seem to inspire Wayne though, who didn’t bang in the goals at his usual rate – (This is a comment I may use in the pub. I’m getting better!). So whether it’s because of all the madness around me, I don’t know, but I can honestly say finally became a fan of the World Cup despite England not getting through. I’ll also admit that I’ll look forward to the next one in four years time... actually... I’ll be thirty that year! I’m suddenly not looking forward to it that much.

DON’T DO A FERDINAND! Avoid a drink driving own goal…
‘GET ON’ FOR A FREE RIDE IN NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE WEEK As it’s National Motorcycle Week from July 18 – 24 it could be time to take the plunge and ‘Get On’ a bike… just like ESP’s Man About Town, Pep Cipriano.
You may not be aware but back in 1997 Rio Ferdinand joined an exclusive group of footballers, but this is one club you want to avoid. In ’97 Ferdinand joined the 18% of drink drivers who get caught unintentionally drink driving the morning after the night before. His ‘own goal’ got him dropped from the England squad playing Moldova in the same year, meaning he lost out on the chance to become the youngest ever England international at 18 years and 10 months of age. So whether you’re the next 18 year old England International or the star striker in the Dog and Sprocket’s pub team you don’t want to do a Ferdinand! So, how easy is it to be over the limit the following morning? Here are the facts:
He’s turned into a real bike enthusiast since passing his test with CAMRider and recently plucked up courage to take out the new BMW S 1000 RR for a spin.
• If you’ve drunk more than three pints of beer or three large glasses of wine in the evening you could be over the limit the next day.
Now it’s your turn. This month’s campaign is creating the opportunity for non-riders with a desire to get their first taste of freedom to give it a try using the free service being offered by over 150 training schools all around the country through www.geton.co.uk including CAMRider in Werrington.
• Drinking coffee, sleeping, slapping yourself round the face or taking a cold shower won’t make you sober up any quicker. Neither will hanging around with footie legend Gazza.
• If you’ve got a cold or are under the weather the time it takes to process alcohol could almost double, meaning you stay under the influence for longer than usual.
Pep out and about on the BMW S 1000 RR
National Motorcycle Week celebrates all that’s fun about riding, including freedom, friends, thrills and adventure. Riding a bike or scooter to work also offers a practical, convenient and flexible alternative for commuters. It takes away the hassle of relying on infrequent public transport and sitting in traffic queues in busy urban areas, while also often being cheaper and greener. During the week local events will take place with support from motorcycle dealers, the police and Bikesafe, rider’s groups, social networks and individuals. New and existing bikers will also be able to win amazing prizes ranging from iPads and digital cameras to biking holidays and full sets of kit as part of the national Get On competition simply by visiting participating dealers throughout the country.
YOUR TOYOTA… WITH 5 YEAR WARRANTY Toyota is bouncing back with a fantastic new five-year warranty deal that should win them new customers. The extended cover is now provided as standard on all new Toyota cars purchased in the UK. Its introduction follows on from the success of Toyota’s ‘Your Choice, Our Promise’ campaign back in the spring, which offered customers the choice of an extended warranty or three years’ free servicing on their new car. www.es p m ag .co.u k ( July )
“Our new five-year warranty is tangible evidence of our commitment to quality and to our customers – both those who are loyal to the brand, and those who are considering switching to Toyota for their next car,” said Miguel Fonseca, Toyota GB managing director. “By taking this major initiative we are giving our customers complete peace of mind. We want to reassure them that, in choosing a Toyota, they are getting the best in quality, reliability and durability.” You can find out more from Marshall Toyota in Peterborough or take a look at www.toyota.co.uk.
• Not having a hangover doesn’t mean the alcohol’s left your system • Don’t risk it – getting caught is a minimum 12 month ban! So, allow at least one hour for every unit of alcohol you drink to pass through your body before you drive but ideally 1.2 hour per unit. Your pub will be able to tell you how many units are in your drink but a main brand pint of beer will have anything between two units *(Fosters) and three units *(Stella) . Calculate the time like this: Units consumed x 1 hour = hours until I’m clear So if I drank four pints of Stella it would be: 4 pints x 3 units x 1 hour = 12 hours If I stopped drinking at midnight, I would only just clear the alcohol from my system by 2pm the next day! What if I lose track of what I had or don’t know how many units I’ve drunk? Use a pocket sized breathalyzer like AlcoSense (available from www.alcosense.co.uk or Halfords and Maplin) to tell when you’re OK to drive the next day. Ranging from £24.99 to £59.99 they’ll quickly and accurately tell you when you’re under the limit and can be used again and again. You can use them between your mates too so you’ll always be safe.

PLAYING WITH FIRE As temperatures hot up calls to the fire service will be red hot too. It’s holiday time and we’re all out to play, especially kids who’ll soon be getting ready for the six weeks of boredom while school’s out. Summer is a time when the number of fires in Peterborough rise. If it's not us setting fire to the hedge with our barbecues, it could be something more serious like younger people playing with fire. So, school might be out soon but teaching the fire safety lessons must go on – whether its parents or the Fire Service. “Parents need to realise that young people do have a fascination with fire – it’s just part of growing up, but it can have really awful results and a significant impact on your life,” says Wendy Coleman, the Community Prevention Advisor at Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service. “They need to take responsibility so that youngsters stay safe and that means not teaching them how to light barbecues or cigarettes and not leaving matches and lighters within reach. Fire needs to be a purely adult responsibility.” Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service has been doing its best to get the right messages across and staff have been trailblazers in working with a company to create and design leaflets and teaching tools which are now shared with other counties.
Wendy Colman showing the range of advice leaflets available
www.es p m ag .co.u k ( July )
“We use the Heart Kids illustrations which help young people understand how to behave better and we’ve modified this specifically to cover fire related topics,” explains Wendy. “These teaching aids use the Heart Kids cartoon characters and a traffic light system to illustrate behaviour patterns – green is good behaviour, yellow is about accepting you need to change
your behaviour and red is a danger zone for any bad behaviour that might be dangerous to them or others.” Using these tools in schools and on its website is really helping to get the messages across to school children and they’re readily available for any groups or parents who want to use them. “We’ll work with schools,” says Wendy, “you can even text us if you think your friends might be playing with fire. We can even do one to ones, so if parents think their kids need a little advice they can contact us through the website or give us a call and we’ll pop round.” Hoax calls also increase at this time of year and these can mean limited resources are stretched and lives put at risk. It’s never a smart move but it’s worth noting that all calls are now recorded, the fire service actively prosecutes and some people have been sent to prison. If a hoax call’s made from a mobile the sim card can be locked until they find out who’s to blame. So, let’s make sure this summer sizzles for all the right reasons. Take a look at www.cambsfire.gov.uk for all the advice you need and play interactive games with the Heart Kids characters. If you are worried about a young person who is playing with fire, text the fire service on 07733 362 640. Texts will be charged at the subscribers normal network rate. Misuse of this service could result in your sim card being locked.

THE MOSTLY FENNY WALK OF FAME With thousands of visitors expected in the city this month to attend JLS' concert on the Embankment, I've put together 'The Mostly Fenny Walk Of Fame', a leisurely stroll around the city centre that takes in some of the places associated with the careers of Peterborough's most famous residents, various visiting celebrities and one genuine American legend. It's guaranteed to be an hour of your life you'll never get back...sorry I mean never forget. Allow: 1 hour
Gateway of the Cathedral

1.
Peterborough Cathedral
Waterstones office window, Bridge St.
START
Above the bookshop entrance is the the office window where many a visiting celeb has gazed out at the crowds assembled below for a book signing. Who can forget the the day in 2007 when Peter Andre lent out the window and waved to his adoring public ? Not me that's for sure - I shook his hand in that office, and just think that hand of his would've been all over Katie Price earlier that day. Man, I didn't wash my hand for at least half an hour.
The city's most celebrated and visited building (if you exclude McDonalds – which I do). The cathedral has a unique link with popular culture. William Westwood, father of Radio 1 rap DJ Tim 'Big Dawg' Westwood was the 36th Bishop of Peterborough from 1984-1996. 'Bishop Bill' was also a radio personality himself through his broadcasts on Radio 4's 'Thought of the day' becoming the first Bishop to broadcast his thoughts live on air. Contrary to popular belief he never introduced his thoughts with the phrase 'Bish, bash bosh, It's me Bishop Bill, so get ready to chill'.
The arch that looks onto Cathedral Square was used in a series of TV commercials in the late 70's and early 80's called 'The Peterborough effect'. Designed to encourage businesses to relocate to the city the ads featured a popular comedy actor of the time Roy Kinnear (kids, ask your parents) dressed as a Roman centurion. A street on the city outskirts was named 'Kinnears Walk' in his honour and Roy's son Rory has continued in his late father's footsteps as an actor, most recently in the 2008 James Bond film 'Quantum of Solace'.
3. 4. The phantom fountains of Cathedral Square
Back in the long-not-so-hot summer of 2009, while the rest of the country was panicking about swine flu, Peterborough was gripped by 'fountain fever' when the council decided that the best way to make the city centre more appealing would be the sight of water squirting up in the air from nozzles hidden below the pavements. Sadly the council's expectations proved premature as work was delayed and the excuses kept piling up. Last month when the hoardings were taken down, many locals were suitably unimpressed as the council couldn't even be bothered to have an official switch-on or get the story covered by BBC Look East. It was quite possibly the biggest anti-climax in Peterborough city centre history. Either that or the time Martin Fowler from Eastenders turned on the Christmas lights in 2003.

6. Queensgate shopping centre
The corner of where Long Causeway meets Westgate
Opened in 1982, Queensgate will be of particular interest to JLS fans as last summer the band launched their first single 'Beat Again' inside the centre's HMV store. Growing up in Peterborough as a teenager Aston did most of his music buying at the shop and would also have travelled up and down on the escalators. Why not follow in his footsteps if you have time. (No backflips please).
This is the spot where wannabe punk rocker Donny Tourette (of Celebrity Big Brother fame) was filmed by TV cameras punching a local painter and decorator in 2006. It was during a documentary on 'Bravo' about his band and the punch-up occurred after the unknown local accused Donny's guitarist 'Rev' of having "chicken legs". This was a reference to the appearance of his skinny legs and not a reference to him eating chicken legs which of course are available from many fine takeaway establishments around the city.

This is the first local landmark that greets visitors arriving to the city by train. It was also where comedian Ernie Wise and his wife Doreen held their wedding reception after being married at Park Road Baptist Church in the city with Eric Morecambe as best man. Doreen, who was originally from Peterborough and Ernie lived here together until the mid 70's and Ernie's connection with the city was frequently joked about on 'M&W' shows. On Boxing Day 2009 BBC2 showed a repeat of an old Christmas special from the 70's where Eric read out the New Years honours list and announced that the Queen had bestowed upon Ernie the title "Lord Ern of Peterborough".

The Broadway Theatre Before it was closed by a fire in 2009, the venue saw many memorable shows. Who can forget the time Rob Brydon was on stage joking about his lack of height only to be heckled by a member of the audience who shouted "I bet you're not as small as me !". When Brydon went to investigate he discovered the heckler was 3ft 6 actor Warwick Davis (from the Star Wars and Harry Potter films) who lives locally and the pair had an imaginary light-saber duel. Then there was the time in Nov 2005 when Bob Geldof walked on stage to perform and told the audience "I use to live here, did you know that ? Had my first English shag in this city". Sadly Geldof didn't elaborate on the identity of the woman involved, however, keep your eyes open for any old dears walking around the city whistling "Tell me why I don't like Mondays".
9. The Lido Peterborough's open air swimming pool which was opened in 1936 has the dubious honour of being Adolf Hitler's least favourite swimming pool. In June 1940 as World War II was raging it was bombed during an air-raid on the city by the Nazi Luftwaffe who destroyed part of the building. (I know what you're thinking cheeky b**tards!) Thankfully it was able to be rebuilt, and 70 years on the only 'bombing' that goes on is from people jumping in the pool.

This month it’s Andy White, a Brummie who escaped from a call centre to become a stand up comic. He combines silly voices and a mad afro to devastating comic effect. Also on the bill is Jason Patterson who’s performed at comedy clubs all over the UK and won the Comedy Store Gong show (March 2008) and has been nominated for Best Newcomer at the Black Entertainment Comedy Awards 2008. In 2009 he reached The Hackney Empire New Act Of The Year Final and delivered a storming set - definitely one to watch out for. Dave Dinsdale and resident compere Adam Tempest complete the bill. Tickets are £10 in advance, £12 on the door. Loyalty card available giving £2 off the price. Box office: 07890 062371.

The Embankment
10.
Over the years many famous musicians have performed at what is locally never called 'The Hyde Park of Peterborough'. UB40, Will Young, McFly, and now JLS. But perhaps the most celebrated performance was when American legend Johnny Cash, yes THE Johnny Cash played on the banks of the River Nene on 30 August 1987 when he headlined the 'Peterborough Country & Western Festival' - a three day Bank holiday extravaganza that was a regular event in the mid 80s. Cash proved so popular that he returndc for a second time in Sept 1988 at the East of England showground. If JLS are looking to tip their hats at the Embankments musical heritage then they could do a lot worse than a rendition of 'Ring of Fire'. I can just picture Aston doing a back-flip through a fiery ring.

TOY STORY 3 Released: July 19 Voice cast: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Michael Keaton. Director: Lee Unkrich
For anyone who reads my film page on a monthly basis, you’ll know I made a bold statement in the last issue that little known action-comedy MacGruber was possibly going to be this year’s The Hangover. It has currently made $8m compared to The Hangover’s $467m, and bombed so badly it didn’t even make it to the Showcase in Peterborough.
all-time in 1999’s Toy Story 2 could possibly even better it – particularly with sensational early reviews Stateside. This time Woody (Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Allen) and co. are accidentally dumped at a day care centre with now 17 year-old Andy heading to college.
Their initial elation is soon thrown into turmoil as devious Lotso bear (Ned Beatty) rules with an iron fist So to regain what little integrity I – and the gang have to hatch an have left, I’m going to make escape plan to get back to Andy’s another bold statement: this will be house. the biggest animation of the year. I usually hate a ‘license to print Okay, so that’s pretty much a money’, but when it’s expected to ‘gimme’, but this sequel to (in my be this good (and in 3D too) I don’t opinion) the greatest animation of really care…
SHREK FOREVER AFTER
THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE
Released: July 2
Released: July 9
It was featured last month, and as the second major animation release in July deserves another mention, even though Shrek’s (Mike Myers) fourth outing – which I hate saying is also in 3D – has underperformed in the States compared to the previous instalments.
This deserves a bigger mention, but I’ve just got roped into taking my mum to a special first screening and have therefore thrown my toys out of the pram – as Bella (Kristen Stewart) chooses between Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Jacob (Taylor Lautner), or something like that.

PREDATORS Released: July 8 Cast: Adrien Brody, Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace. Director: Nimrod Antal
Under the production guidance of Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) hopefully this franchise will be successfully re-ignited after the god-awful Aliens vs Predator: Requiem. Early trailers look promising as Adrien Brody’s (King Kong) mercenary leads a team of cold-blooded killers – including Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix), Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3) and Danny
Trejo (Desperado) – to an alien planet. Unfortunately the you-knowwhat hits the proverbial fan, as they’ve been duped into coming to the home world of the Predators – as prey being hunted for sport. At the time of writing I’m not sure if that is still worse than watching England in the World Cup. If they’ve won it, I’ll gladly take that back with euphoric glee…
INCEPTION
THE KARATE KID
THE A-TEAM
Released: July 16
Released: July 28
Released: July 28
This thriller from The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan could quite conceivably be the best original film of the summer, particularly with skilled dream-catching thief Leonardo DiCaprio headlining a cast that also boasts Michael Caine, Cillian ‘Scarecrow’ Murphy and Ellen ‘Juno’ Page.
This remake of the muchloved 1984 original spanked The A-Team when they were released together Stateside, but will this family-friendly flick – which sees Will Smith’s son Jaden and Jackie Chan fill the Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita roles – do the same over here?
Still keeping my fingerscrossed despite this re-imaging of the classic TV series only garnering mixed reviews across the Atlantic, as Liam Neeson, The Hangover’s Bradley Cooper and UFC fighter Rampage Jackson star respectively as the legendary Hannibal, Face and B.A. Baracus.
All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.

(X360/PS3/PSP) Out now
If you ever wanted to play Grand Theft Auto IV on horseback – now’s your chance with one of the standout games of the year. Next-gen consoles have been crying out for a decent western-based game, and now we’ve got it within this expansive world which sees former outlaw John Marston trying to bury his bloodstained past. Despite poor saving points, this is nigh on flawless, with great combat intertwined within a compelling story – that makes this the Clint Eastwood of its ilk. #####
BLUR
(X360/PS3/PC) Out now
Brock Lesnar, Rampage Jackson and co. initially seemed to have dramatically bettered last year’s first entry – improved graphics and more fighters – but with a repetitive career mode and complicated controls, it’s still only a strong contender and not yet champion.
Utilise an arsenal of power-ups – like nitro speed boosts – with more than fifty photo-realistic licensed cars at your disposal within intense racing environments.
You could argue it has taken a slight step back after the more artistic direction of the last effort – particularly with more simplistic controls – but with beautiful settings and hoardes of enemies this ticks all the right boxes.
Still the best at what it does – and comes hugely recommended – but falls just short, much like Jackson’s loss to Rashad Evans.
It may not be king with the overall design looking a tad stale – but this still has princely qualities.

ALPHA PROTOCOL
MODNATION RACERS
Despite this self sub-titled espionage role player offering originality – sadly the end result is distinctly last-gen.
What do you get if you cross LittleBigPlanet with Mario Kart? This little gem of a game.
(X360/PS3/PC) Out now
No, not the official video game of the hit indie band – but an exhilarating Mario Kart-esque take on racing.
Fans of the franchise before the recent 2008 incarnation should lap-up this game.
(PS3/PSP) Out now
It does provide a noteworthy Mass Effect-style power of choice and a very decent script, but sub-standard graphics, unexciting combat and tedious glitches make this instantly forgettable – even though there are a few decent ideas.
It would’ve been easy for Sony to take Sega’s blatantly unoriginal route on kart racing with their recent Sonic effort, but this humorously customisable take is refreshingly fun and hugely playable.
Let’s hope the same developers don’t mess up Fallout: New Vegas – as this is one protocol you won’t want to stick to.
Innovative twists – like a Burnout-style boost meter – and great online features, means this game has plenty of gas left in the tank well after the chequered flag.

INTERNATIONAL
GREEN DAY: ROCK BAND
ALL STAR KARATE
Let’s be fair, there’s been some ‘rip off’ band spin-offs in both the Rock Band and Guitar Hero franchises – but fortunately this is one of the best.
If you ever wanted to have a bash at karate but couldn’t be bothered to get off your backside – here’s the best alternative.
It owes a lot to Project Gotham, and even though it can’t better the all-round experience of Forza 3, this sits nicely towards the top of the genre’s second tier – and boasts the all important ingredient of fun.
CRICKET 2010 (X360/PS3) Out now
(X360/PS3/Wii) Out now
If you want to imitate England’s recent T20 World Cup, this is the most enjoyable effort yet to replicate the notoriously nonconsole friendly sport. Publisher Codemasters build on solid grounding made with last year’s The Ashes, by enhancing batting – with closer camera perspective and 360 degree power stick controls – to a Kevin Pietersen ‘hitting a six’ level. Sadly bowling has been made slightly more tedious, but that’s one minor gripe in this ECB-endorsed game which is arguably the best cricket game ever. #####
(Wii) Out now
Some prior packages have simply been glorified DLC, but with more than 45 songs – and for once it includes the band’s very best – this is a polished product.
Utilising the Wii remote and nunchuk, this linear jaunt is karate-lite as you’re guided by an old-time sensei to gain all the coloured belts – right through to black.
Sadly the lyrics are understandably censored, but you definitely won’t feel like an American Idiot riffing to one of the most popular bands of this generation.
This will generally appeal to novices of the sport, but with the obvious fitness benefits thrown in, it’s hard not to recommend a game that gets you on your feet.

It’s a bit of a malarkey this festival lark, no sooner have you got home and recovered from the last one than you’re packing the cool box for the next one. Fortunately beer is easy to pack and doesn’t take very long! The Bugs
Last month saw the annual gathering of the festival crew at Glastonbudget, and what a weekend that was. Tracy and her sis and mum, ably assisted by Lola Docherty dressed up as various bugs and won third prize in the fancy dress competition. Apparently Jesus was first which left me wondering if religion is back in fashion. Musically the Rubber Plants (Led Zep) rocked the place again; they generate so much noise for a three piece and put on a great show. They also hung out with us for most of the weekend which was pretty cool. Local shock swampers Empress Of Fur played a sultry, angry, two song set in protest at having their set shortened. I didn’t see it but apparently it was electric. Again the band got slightly smashed with us afterwards; the word ‘wreck’ was definitely mentioned on the Sunday. On the main stage Madness tribute One Step Beyond had the crowd bouncing and were probably the most fun so got my vote as best main stage act. Until next year Glastonbudget... thanks for a great weekend. We popped over to the Bourne Festival this year – that was a good crack. Thanks to Digga for the use of his drive and to Caroline and Chris for introducing us to the Marquis Of Granby… that pub will kill someone some day... in a good kind of way... it’s a party pub and too much partying is bad for you! It
was good to see the League Of Mentalmen and Greendate on stage, one for the calendar next year definately. The highlight of the month though was Rage Against The Machine at Finsbury Park. Yes, I bought the download and yes, I have their albums and yes I got a free ticket. Rage were awesome, they’ll go down as one of the greatest live bands in history. So good I put my back out… still suffering two weeks later! Anyway July is here so where to now? Shock of all shocks Cambridge Folk Kris Kristofferson Festival is on sale still. It usually sells out in a day or so but no, four weeks on and still selling. Take a look at www.cambridgefolkfestival.co.uk if you want to go. Kris Kristofferson headlines, it’s always good to see a great, no matter what the age, a great is a great. You can also catch Natalie Merchant, Seasick Steve, Imelda May and local

hero Ezio. They play Thursday night and are bound to kick off the festival in style. You’ve never had a better chance to get to this great festival on your door step, give it a go it’s one of the best weekends of the year. Over in Suffolk on the weekend of July 2 – 4 the Maverick Festival is a rare treat if you’re into your alternative country and Americana music. Headlined by Chris Difford of Squeeze fame this cracking little festival will transport you to the Midwest, down to Texarkana and back up the smoky mountains without leaving the country. They have four stages and tickets at a maximum of £55 include the gospel brunch session on Sunday. Were we not at power drinker Pete’s 60th we would be there, maybe next year. Chris Difford is supported by Hank Wangford amongst others, check out www.maverickfestival.co.uk for more info. Locally don’t forget Stamford’s Riverside Festival on July 3 – 4 our Man About Stamford, Zilcho, has more info on that for you, turn back a few pages to p.20 and you’ll find him there.. See you when the cool box is empty again…
Vibe from the underground... "Not only do The Cellar bar dish up some of the finest music in the city, Gio now has his own Bistro too. It's also open 11am - 3pm for English café style grub and by ringing through on 07775 841239 you can pre order and pick up food to go, whatever next Gio? A drive through Daiquiri bar??? LIVE MUSIC
Keith Dalton joins the ESP writing team with a round-up of the news from the local live music scene…
UNDER THE INFLUENCE Another new name on the local band scene is The Influence. New band but some familiar names in a strong line up: Lou Bryant – bass/vocals, Lindsay Barn – drums, Steve Boyd – guitar and Bob Banks – vocals. Names you may remember from Renegade, Tut and Time-Out.
KISSMET’S HEADLINE HOMECOMING Q – What’s the connection between Glastonbury and the Stamford Riverside Festival? A – Kissmet
The name ‘The Influence’, derives simply from the fact that they’ve decided to play music from artists who’ve influenced each of them. Rory Ghallagher, Led Zeppelin, Dylan and The Stones. A special treat at their gigs is an acoustic set of classic songs. This seems to be an exciting new trend at live performances and I’d like to think that the Keith & Claire radio show, which featured live acoustic performances by local bands had a part to play in this development. Or should I say an INFLUENCE! By the way, Saturday With Keith & Claire returns on the new Radio Peterborough on 106.2 FM so tune in this month.
ADDING FUEL TO THEIR FIRE After battling it out in live heats across the country, Fuel For The Fire from Chatteris and Whittlesey have just made it through to the National Grand Final of Live And Unsigned! They’re now getting set to take to the stage at the IndigO2 in London on July 10! After initially auditioning against thousands of other acts across the UK and impressing the judging panel with their originality, they went on to perform live on stage at the Midlands final at Bedford. They dazzled the crowd with their winning performance and they’re now set to perform at the Grand Final – which is staged at the Live And Unsigned Festival at the IndigO2. Fuel For The Fire will be performing on the main stage of the Festival, in front of a live crowd and judging panel and lead singer Steve Chapman told me - "We are all on such a high after learning we reached the final at the o2 arena.” Some of the biggest names in the industry will be there to cast their eye over the unsigned talent. Live And Unsigned is the biggest original music competition in the UK for unsigned bands and artists, attracting over 30,000 entries in the past three years There’s a £100,000 prize package for the winners including equipment, a recording contract and the opportunity to develop their own clothing brand to sell online. Let’s hope that yet more talent from this area becomes a well known name in the music world. The initial signs are that they’re doing well on the internet voting but they need your support. You can get more information and tickets on www.liveandunsigned.uk.com Good luck to Fuel For The Fire for July 10.
FEAST AT GRASSROOTS The Grassroots Feastival returns this September at a secret location between Saffron Walden and Cambridge on September 3 – 5. With eight stages and four separate areas, this festival is set to be bigger than anything they’ve done before and finishes in a massive communal meal on the Sunday – which is why it’s got the Feastival name. Over the four areas, the organizers have got pretty much everyone’s musical tastes covered – The Muddy Field will feature live music, cabaret and poetry, while the Electronic www.es p m ag .co.u k ( July )
The bhangra rock fusion band from Peterborough play both festivals this year. They’ve just returned from another hugely successful appearance on the Croissant Neuf Stage at Glasto, at midnight, in front of a crowd of over 2,000 revellers. They’ve appeared there every year since 2004. Not only that, but Kissmet chose Glastonbury to launch their new album, Trippin' The Life Fantastic! It’s earned fantastic reviews, from the likes of influential world music magazine Songlines. Founder member Ron Singh told me that the album, which consists of some studio recordings together with powerful live tracks, was recorded here in Peterborough using a studio created by Kissmet themselves. He said that because the band perform a fusion between western rock and bhangra, they need a studio to suit ‘west meets east’. Their studio’s been custom designed to achieve that and of course allows the band the luxury of spending as much time as is needed to perfect the mixing, without worrying about the cost of expensive studio time. The resulting album demonstrates the quality. The album and more info is available online from the band's website – www.kissmet.co.uk. No doubt some of the album material will feature locally at the Riverside Festival in Stamford on Saturday July 3. That’s when Kissmet headline the main stage at the Stamford Riverside Festival. You won’t want to miss this because it’s the band’s only local appearance this summer. The power of a Kissmet performance is simply awesome. The Stamford Riverside Festival runs from just after midday to late in the Meadows on Saturday and Sunday July 3-4 and features a host of bands of all genres of music playing on three stages. Music for all tastes will be there along with the ESP Paparazzi team and ESP Dance Crew. Food and liquid lunches are available and a great atmosphere as always.
Pastures covers all things digital, roots and a little bit of spoken word. Antics Swamp will be run by the Antic Establishment, who run an area at Secret Garden Party and the Antic Banquet Festival will be teaming up with the Magpie’s Nest, an influential London folk club to bring you world, folk, hip-hop and ska, plus jugglers. Dreamer’s Common is a communal area with bonfires, adult-sized kid’s games like pass-the-parcel and a fairy bar where the giant feast will take place. NON STOP ANDY RELEASES NEW SOLO ALBUM
SHED WEEKEND SCOOTER RALLY 16th - 18th July
Before Aston and JLS, Andy Bell from Erasure was Peterborough’s claim to fame. ESP’s Keith Dalton grabs a word with Andy about his latest solo release…
ORGANIC SOUNDS 6th - 8th August
One of Peterborough’s most famous musical sons, Erasure front man Andy Bell has released a new solo album. It’s Andy’s second solo venture, the first being Electric Blue in 2005. The gap between the two is because of the massive workload that Andy and Vince Clark have endured with the hugely successful Erasure – the band that’s been going strong since the 80s.
THE FENLAND RIDEOUT BIKE RALLY 3rd - 4th September
“Erasure have been together for 21 years,” Andy told me, “and I calculated that we’ve performed 755 live shows and released 13 albums, and after that massive workload I just felt the time was right for a break. So I persuaded Vince that a little time out was necessary. Fortunately he agreed!” Hence the release of Non-Stop, a collaboration with Pascal Gabriel (formerly S-Express and Peach). There’s a good mix in the ten tracks on Non-Stop including Andy’s favourites Touch and the ballad Slow Release, to my personal choice Will You Be There which was the initial single from the album (Andy under the pseudonym Mimo). So with a second solo project, will there be more Erasure? “For sure,” Andy reassures me. “This is just a break, and Vince and I are planning some more Erasure sessions while I’m DJ-ing in New York next month.” Since hitting the big time in the 80s Andy and Erasure have remained close to our hearts having helped put Peterborough on the map. Like Boy George he’s made another name for himself as a DJ and I wonder if he still gets a buzz from the DJ-ing side of his career? “I do. It gives me a chance to play some of my favourite music. There’s some really great remixes of 80s electro music which I’m a big fan of. At the moment I’m into Digital Dog, Robyn’s new album and can’t wait for the new Kylie release! It’s long overdue.” During our chat, we reminisced about his younger days in Peterborough. He went to Kings. I went to Deacons. Always a bit of rivalry between the two. But as Andy said it was always good natured. “I lived in Dogsthorpe and had to walk past Deacons every morning to get to Kings and I never had any trouble.” His favourite drinking haunts were The Still and The Gladstone Arms. Both “divey pubs” according to Mr Bell. But I know exactly what he meant. Quality beer in a unique atmosphere and usually some music mixed in. He comes back to Peterborough to visit Mum and Dad regularly, but says it’s not to stay, it’s for just a day visit because he only lives an hour away. Andy Bell is a busy guy. From what I gathered from our conversation, he took a break from his busy Erasure schedule in order to work hard at DJ-ing, co-write and produce a new solo album, set off around America to promote that album whilst doing more DJ-ing work and visiting Erasure partner Vince Clark for two weeks recording new material. Some break, but then Andy Bell loves what he does! I guess you could say he’s Non-Stop. Non-Stop by Andy Bell is now available on Mute Records.

RIVERSIDE PARTY JON DASILVA @ MAMA’S Awakening presents Back To The Beats on July 24 at Mama Liz’s, Stamford with Jon DaSilva, one of the residents at the legendary Hacienda. He was regarded as ahead of his time even in the early 80s, and is one of the most influential House DJs around – catch him while you can! Support on the night comes from Rob Soulfood and Matty T. Entry £6.
BREAKCORE IN THE BORO Amen 2 Anarchy, Peterborough’s brand new breakcore night had a successful debut last month so this time around on July 2 at Club Dissident, they’ve got an even better line-up for us all. Joining the residents is their first guest DJ, Ketamax. Ketamax hails from Reading and has been on the scene for four years, making a big impression with the BassBinge Camp. Residents playing on the night are Komplex, TDM, Urb and Funky Green – all well respected on the local scene and finally joining together to play some of the darkest electronica around. Entry £3.
COCO’S URBAN AFFAIR A new night kicks off at Coco’s on Broadway this month, which means every Friday, starting July 2, will see DJs Tee and Supa T spin urban selections from the past and present. The flyer also promises tunes from the future, but we’re not quite sure how that works – definitely one reason to check it out! It’s a 9pm start through till 3am. Entry’s free.

GROOVERIDER @ DISSIDENT After Fabio’s massive set at Club Dissident a few months ago, 4 Cross are now bringing you his partner in crime, Grooverider, along with the Ragga Twins on July 23. One of the pioneers of the D‘n’B scene, his 12 years behind the decks have changed the face of UK electronic music. Through his show with Fabio on BBC Radio One, he’s inspired countless people to go into clubs and get on the decks. The Ragga Twins hail from Hackney and are a jungle group starring London UNITY sound system veteran MCs Deman Rockers and Flinty Badman, starting off in the early 90s rave scene and still recording and rhyming to this day.
BIG, BAD BASSLINES Dubstep returns to Club Dissident, Lincoln Road on July 9, when Crunked Up and Submerge play hosts to the Bobby Bitz album launch and the second round of the King of the Mic MC competition, featuring a battle between Mixy and The Counte. With two rooms of dubstep and hip hop, this is going to be one heavy night. Entry £4.
THINK GLOBALLY, DANCE LOCALLY Try something different and get into the summer vibe with the new Afro Latin night on July 24 at Club Dissident. Featuring DJ KO playing Afro beats, ragga, R‘n’B, kizomba (sensual, African rhythms from Angola) and funana (upbeat, accordion based dance music from Cape Verde) alongside DJ Cubana playing funky house, soca (like calypso, but with a better beat), Reggaeton (reggae with heavy Latin influences) and Afro Latin beats. There aren’t many nights playing this kind of music so it’s definitely worth checking out.
DEEP DOWN AND DIRTY DUB Stamford will get shaken on July 16 thanks to the Dub Presents night at Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge. The bass will be turned up to max and sounds played will include reggae, dub, D‘n’B and dub step. Entry £3. There’s more D‘n’B on July 30 including a live act – details had yet to be released at time of going to print. Entry £3.
TIM WESTWOOD @ CENTRAL BBC Radio One’s Tim Westwood will be gracing the decks at Central nightclub in Stamford on August 7. He’ll be playing out all the hottest tracks and we’re assured this is not a night to be missed! Later this month on July 29 Central’s also hosting Mr Get Your Rocks Wet – the name says it all! Cash prizes are to be won so lads make sure you’re there toned and ready! Girls also have the chance to take part in the saucy Miss Wet T-shirt 2010 on August 5 and 12.

But he’s back for the toughest part of the season – as the race to finish in the top four and get through to the title play-offs really hots up. Neils said – “I’ve never been out as long as that and it was a frustrating time, particularly when we lost. “I looked at some of the results and I’m sure they would’ve been different if I’d been fit and scoring points so I owe everyone at the club.” While Peterborough maintained their 100% home record in Puk’s absence they missed him badly on their travels. They failed to pick up a point in the six away matches he missed and that left them hovering around the playoff cut-off position. Photo: Kevin Goodacre

PANTHERS SKIPPER AIMING FOR THE TOP
“We have a fairly quiet July so that will give me a chance to get fully race fit again,” said Niels, “but then we have a make-or-break August.” “I’m sure the team we’ve got is good enough to win the Elite League title this year – we just have to make sure we make the top four and we all start again.” Panthers have only four meetings in July and three of them are at the East of England Showground. But it’s a tough spell with runaway league leaders Poole and defending champions Wolverhampton among the visitors.
Skipper Niels-Kristian Iversen has set his sights on a league title – to make up for the longest lay-off of his career. And the Denmark star has vowed to make up for lost time as Peterborough go into the second half of their Elite League campaign.
Friday, July 16 v Swindon, Elite League, 7.30pm Monday, July 19 v Poole, Elite League, 7.30pm Thursday, July 22 v Wolverhampton, Elite League, 7.30pm. Log on to www.peterboroughspeedway.co.uk for confirmation of all fixtures.

Iversen, who lives with his partner Laura at their new home in Hampton, missed more than seven weeks of Panthers’ season with a shattered shoulder blade.
SPEEDWAY FIXTURES
CYCLISTS ON TOUR atmosphere and brilliant to see it on the tele on ITV4 later.
It was great to see the city centre buzzing with music and crowds when the Halfords Tour Series cycling race hit Peterborough. Ten professional teams took part racing through the city streets and Cathedral Square at high speed. It’s just the sort of thing we need to create a bit of after hours www.es p m ag .co.u k ( July )
Peterborough cyclist Ben Price competed with the Cycle Premier team and told ESP – “I found the circuit tough and the speed was very high. There was a great turn out from the local people and they really created a great atmosphere.” One of the organisers from the city council, Stuart Hamilton estimated there were up to 10,000 people there throughout the day
as the events kicked off at 2pm. “It was a great success and made the city centre very vibrant,” said Stuart. “The more events like this we can have the better as it helps put Peterborough on the map. It was a lot of work but well worth it.” The good news is it should be back next year – the organisers and the cycling teams all want to return to Peterborough but as ever things will depend on sponsorship so fingers crossed.

BRIBE AND GROOM
At the time of writing July 3 was the apparent date set for the non-event of the year - Jordan’s money making photo opportunity, sorry I mean wedding, to Alex Reid. Rumours abounded that anyone who’s anyone was snubbing the bash and Jordan was getting so worried about the lack of famous faces that she was considering resorting to paying ‘stars’ to attend her nuptials, particularly as the event is, surprise surpris e, being filmed for her ITV2 show.
At one point it was claimed, the most famous person to accept was Michelle Heaton, yikes! It was also reported in a magazine that she’d been trying to do a deal to get the champ agne supplied free – but been turned down. So you’d think that that would send out a very clear message to both Jordan and the world, that her star is most definitely not on the ascendancy. So why was it then that, in the same press that reported how nobody famous wanted to attend the wedding under the headline ‘Jordan’s in the I do-do ’, we were told in another article that she was planning to desert ITV2 to head to Living TV where a proposed mega-bucks deal would see her TV earnings more than double to £5m over two years. What?! How low does someone’s popularity have to sink before these reality TV people realise WE DON’T CARE, stop wasting your cash! Mind you, having said that, look what happened to Richar d and Judy when they left Channel 4 for the supposedly more lucrative deal over at Watch – the show sank without a trace. So, working on that principal, maybe it will be money well spent after all.

PETERBOROUGH’S RAY OF SUNSHINE It’s only taken until the final series but finally, Peterborough’s been represented in the Big Brother house. And who from our fair city should have received the honour? None other than “beautiful and intelligent” (her words, not mine) medical student Sunshine, whose real name is actually Yvette. Now, it’s very easy to take the mick out of Sunshine/Yvette, the rubbish vegan who lives on crisps and bread and drives a car with the logo ‘powered by fairy dust’ (away with the fairy dust more like) but I have to say, there’s something about her that I really quite like. Unfortunately though, it doesn’t appea r that too many people agree with me at the mome nt so whether or not she remains in the house (as she is at the time of going to press) or has been boote d out by her fairy wings, you can be sure she’s bound to appear in a local panto (Fairy Godmother?!) opening a supermarket or switching on some Christmas lights near us very soon. So here, for anyone who hasn’t come across her yet, are a few important facts about our very own Peterborian ray of Sunshine: • After losing her Mum to cancer when she was 17, Sunshine vowed to work extra hard to become a doctor to try and help stop other people having to feel like she did. • She’s a Tory through and through and wants to become Prime Minister one day – despite admitting she knows chuff all about politics. • She lives with her pet Chihuahua Tinkerbell (didn’t see that one coming - much) and a friend.
SEXY, RICH, FABULOUS – AND SINGLE According to a survey by Fitness First, Kelly Brook has been voted as having the best celebrity body. That’s all very well but, having just split with her latest fella, rugby player Danny Cipriani, it just goes to show that having the best body in the world doesn’t help you keep a man. So girls, let’s raise a glass, say Amen to that, sit back – and pass the Pringles round! www.es p m ag .co.u k ( July )
• She auditioned for Big Bro to prove that “beau ty and brains do mix”. • She fancies Ronaldo but reckons she’d be a rubbish WAG. • She’s had three near death experiences, including one when she accidentally overdosed on anti-malarial drugs in India. So, I’m all prepared to get behind her and encourage the whole of Peterborough to vote to keep our girl in (unless she’s already out, in which case, save your pennies), I just won’t be asking her to prescribe me any medicine (particularly antimalarial ones) any time soon.
