Prepare to be amazed! Here at ESP Magazine we appreciate ambition. And the one word that sums up Peterborough Arts Fest 2013 is ambitious. In partnership with seven major English and French festivals through the ZEPA 2 network and funded in part by the European Union, this year’s festival will take place across the city throughout August and into September. And it’s virtually 100% FREE for everyone!

Photo: F. Raynaud

It’s not so much a few select activities but a barrage of artistic flair in locations you’d never expect. One event that immediately draws the eye when reading through the acts is Les Studios De Cirque and their performance on the Wheel of Death. Not something you’d normally see on the Embankment. Festival manager Lisa Helin filled us in on this particular act...

last year’s finished and have managed to accumulate a strong programme of performers.” Along with the Wheel of Death the Britten Sinfonia will be performing an outdoor classical concert on the Embankment, there’ll be a spectacular giant lantern parade which will fill Cathedral Square and Britain's Got Talent stars Faces of Disco will be whipping up a frenzy in Central Park. So with a new format, a host of acclaimed entertainers and a whole city full of venues to prepare will the festival be ready in time? “Well there's lots of work still to do,” says Lisa, “but the acts are all booked so now its all about infrastructure and contractors to arrange, the less glamorous side of things.”

“It’s a large rotating structure which has performers climbing and throwing themselves about, both inside the wheel and on the outside. There are three performances a day and they’re each chapters to an over arching story, with the last show performed blind folded… the risk assessment wasn’t much fun for that one!”

The Peterborough Arts Fest will bring us great entertainment throughout August and will be gearing up for its big final weekend which runs from Friday September 6 to Sunday September 8. So go on – indulge in the doolally and join in the festivities this summer!

Lisa has been up and down both England and France scouting specific acts for the festival and has compiled an impressive line up of performers ready to unleash their talents on the city.

We’ll be keeping you well informed on all the exciting events online at www.espmag.co.uk and right here in the magazine, but to find out more about the festival and its many, many events visit www.peterboroughfestival.co.uk.

ROOTZ FESTIVAL IS BACK After several years on hold, the much-loved Randall Rootz Festival is making a return to Charters over the weekend of August 17 & 18. Having merged with the historic Peterborough Folk Festival, the two events now become one and make their return to the city as Peterborough Folk Rootz Festival.

The free two-day family festival will feature the best of acoustic-roots, world music and modern folk and looks to bring the usual ray of sunshine to Charters beer garden over the two day event – featuring the best of local talent and acts from further afield, as well as fun for the kids too. The line-up remains under wraps until mid-July, but will be announced on Facebook and confirmed in the August edition of ESP and, as usual, will be helping to raise funds for Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough.

CROWLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL The Crowland music festival and family day is taking place at The Crowland Abbey Hotel in Crowland on Saturday July 6. This free to enter music festival and family fun day starts at 3pm and includes performances by Seventh Sence, Woodbridge, Keep it Secret, Death Valley Pile Driver, The Soundinjectors, Kindred and Derecho. There will also be a barbecue, bouncy castle and Joe Da Disco to compare the whole event.

“The welcome return of The Willow Festival to the city has given us the confidence to bring back our own small and relaxed festival”, said Folk Rootz Festival organiser Mike Harris, “in fact, Mark Ringer from The Willow has been very supportive in helping us find the right acts to ensure we’re not too diddley-diddley!” Definitely one to put in the diary! To be kept in touch, grab the August edition of ESP or join the festival fan page on www.Facebook.com/FolkRootz

REGIONAL COLLEGE FASHION SHOW While potential students took a look around Peterborough Regional College at its recent open day, existing students put on a fantastic hair and fashion show on the theme of Through The Ages.

The night also launched the new part-time and evening course guide for courses starting this September which includes parttime courses from accounting to photography and complementary therapies to health & social care. Full-time course options such as travel, hospitality, construction and hairdressing were busy with more full-time applications coming in for September.

The event was a big success with in excess of 300 visitors estimated to have visited and The Hair & Makeup End of Year Show went without a hitch. The hairdressing and makeup students had been working all day on their models creating their chosen look. The theme being through the ages saw looks from Madonna in her 80’s style through to Lady Gaga and back to Prehistoric and Edwardian looks.

Peterborough Regional College are enrolling now and throughout the summer. For more info log onto www.peterborough.ac.uk or contact the Information Centre on 0845 8728722.

Digs up Some Summer Surprises

It’s been described as one of the most important Bronze Age sites in the UK and has just unveiled one of the biggest archaeological discoveries of recent years, so why haven’t you been to Flag Fen recently?

The boats can be viewed in a special cold storage facility but will eventually form a major display at Flag Fen. Some of the other finds are already on show. Other than this, the park is getting ready for its great summer programme with events happening across July and August.

A

ll too often, when tourist attractions are right on your doorstep you lose the urge to visit them, which has never made much sense to us here at ESP. Along with our awe inspiring cathedral, Flag Fen can sometimes be overlooked because it’s not going anywhere, and besides nothing’s going on over there anyway right? Wrong! This summer the archaeological park has a host of excellent attractions that’ll have you cursing yourself for not visiting sooner. First off let’s talk about the recent discovery of the eight 3,000 year-old boats which have been found in stunningly well preserved condition. These boats are relics which are of international importance and they’re right here in our city!

12

“This is going to be hugely significant, archaeologists used to look to the Swiss lakes for finds like these now they’re going to be coming here. This is not only going to be of interest to historians and scientists, this is a profound story for Peterborough which could put itself on the map.”

www.espmag.co.uk

The Vikings will be invading the park on Saturday July 6 and Sunday July 7. Watch a full-scale battle between hundreds of warriors, visit living history camps to experience life a thousand years ago and indulge in plenty of family friendly activities for a perfect summer weekend of historical fun!

Have you discovered an artefact and want to know more about it? Head down to the park on Friday July 19 to have Cambridgeshire's Finds Liaison Officer expertly identify it for free! Who knows you may have dug up a fortune. Then on the final weekend of July join Hollywood's most famous archaeologist to explore the ancient secrets in Raiders of the Lost Park! On Saturday July 27 and Sunday July 28 you can search for treasure in the dig tent, brave the creepy crawlies that will be encountered during the adventure and face the ‘obstacle course of doom’! A must for any young explorers. Special event entry to the park is £6 for adults, children, students and seniors £4 and there’s a family ticket available for £15. Admission for under 5's and Heritage Pass holders is free. For more info on what’s going on at Flag Fen visit www.vivacitypeterborough.com or email flag.fen@vivacitypeterborough.com. Alex Jones

NEW BEEMER IS ADVENTURE FOR SIMONA Attempting to climb onto a motorbike was a bit of an adventure for our Simona. We’re used to grace and elegance when it comes to our lovely Face of ESP but watching Simona fumble her leg over the tank of BMW’s new F800 GS Adventure brought back visions of Ann Widdecombe on Strictly. Determined to get into the saddle, our Simona wasn’t to be beaten and on the third attempt (with no help needed) she perched herself onto one of the best off-road bikes ever made. In Simona’s defence, the Adventure isn’t the smallest bike in production and yours truly needed a bit of a leg up to mount its comfy seat but thankfully for us short folk, there’s a lowered seat option available. The Adventure is a step up from a standard F800 GS. It has a strengthened rear subframe designed to handle the increased loads of off-road riding and a larger fuel tank, windscreen and more comfortable bench seat to make the bike ultra pleasant on long days in the saddle. Other additions include wider footpegs, an adjustable foot brake lever, a pannier rack that also protects the tank and a tubular protection bar for the engine. All in all the Adventure is a top drawer bit of kit and this one’s ready to be ridden from the Balderston showroom. Give the guys a call on 01733 565470 to book a test ride.

PEP’S LOCAL HEROES This is a new feature in my column, as I thought it was about time I drew attention to the people who’ve made a positive difference to our city. Every month I’ll be name-checking Peterborians from all walks of life who I think we need to be reminded about from time to time. To kick us off I’d like to salute Peter Boizot for, among many things, establishing Pizza Express. I’m sure he’s as proud as I am to see his portrait in our local Pizza Express. The man is cultured and has class. He’s also a gentleman – now there’s a word you don’t hear a lot nowadays.

CLASSIC CAR SHOW. GOOD CALL! No two brothers are the same as pub landlords Andy and Stuart Simmonds will testify. While Andy likes to let his (what’s left of it) hair down with a can of Fosters, brother Stuart prefers to unwind by showing his beautiful Escort RS 2000 at last month’s excellent Bourne Classic Car & Bike Show. Stuart and I were impressed with the turnout of people, cars and bikes at the event but we were both perplexed as to why we had to travel to Bourne to enjoy our passion. Why haven’t we got an annual classic car show in Peterborough?

HOTELS WOULD CLEAN UP IN FOOD POLL Peterborough’s hotels are the fourth cleanest in the UK according to new research from online hotel reservation service hotel.info. Hotel users were asked to rate the condition of sheets, towels and showers and comment on how staff were presented. I’m sure if food at our hotels was taken into account then we’d top the list. Some of the best meals I’ve ever had in the city have been at the Park Inn, Great Northern, Bull and Marriott hotels. Yum... I feel a food review coming on...

WILLOW AND LEVITY HERE I COME! Music, comedy and beer, yep I’ve got a pack of three (batteries) ready for an epic couple of weekends with my camera at The Willow Festival and Levity Festival this month. Thousands of people will be flocking to our Embankment for The Willow Festival on July 12 – 14 and a good few thousand of us will be watching the very best of live comedy at the Levity the following weekend. I’ll be taking photos of what summer’s all about – sunburn, cider and sickie pullers on the Monday morning. For Levity tickets, visit www.levityfestival.co.uk

ome came in fancy dress. Some came after months of training. Some came with friends. Some came to remember a loved one. But everyone who tackled this year’s Starlight Hike had something in common – they wanted to raise money for Thorpe Hall Hospice. This year’s event, once again supported by ESP Magazine, was even more important coming at the start of the two year appeal to raise the £6 million needed to build a new state-of-the-art hospice at Thorpe Hall. Everyone did the campaign proud and there was a poignant moment as silence fell on the start line and walkers took a minute to remember those they’ve known and lost, many of whom were cared for at the hospice.

Regional fundraiser Alison Toomey told ESP – “We were delighted to see so many people turn out on the night to support the Starlight Hike. As ever, it was a very emotional evening with so many people opening their hearts and sharing their reasons for taking part. But it was also really good fun – the marshalls were fantastic, cheering every single walker along and the atmosphere as people walked was buzzing.”

Then, on the dot of 8pm, walkers streamed out of the Greyhound Stadium at the start of the 10 kilometre route.

TO THE JOKE CAVE AND DON'T SPARE THE HORSES The story so far: A few months ago you may remember as well as alerting people about all the brilliant live comedy gigs going on in the city (swivel your eyeballs to the right for the latest) I emerged from my joke cave to unveil 'My pure genius plan for Peterborough'. To build a brewery on the Embankment and make a drink similar to 'Guinness' that'll help fuel our nightlife economy and make my brewery a tourist attraction. Made using water from the River Nene, I'm going to call it 'GUINENESS'.

I've also been inspired by Javier Bardem's Bond baddie in Skyfall and am thinking of growing my hair long and dying it blonde like his. I'll have to remember not to wear a tracksuit though, otherwise I'll end up looking like Jimmy Saville and no one wants that. All of which brings me onto the news story that the rest of the country’s been joking about for months – horse

A general admission ticket for £40 now also includes the headline acts Al Murray, Lee Nelson and Omid Djalli appearing each night. This comedy fest runs from Friday July 19 to Sunday July 21 on the Peterborough Embankment and even more names have been added to what must be one of the biggest line-ups of comedy acts EVER! Sean Hughes joins the fun on the Saturday and other names

JULY

5

The Bottle Rocket Comedy Club has two great comedy nights at the Key Theatre Studio in July. First up on July 5 it’s Gary Delaney fresh from his appearances on shows like Mock The Week, testing out a rough and ready bag of new born jokes. Support comes from Edinburgh Festival sell out Iain Stirling. Tickets are £8 JULY

19

The second comedy night of the month is on July 19 at the Key Theatre Studio when Phil Nichol, acclaimed actor, award winning comedian, presenter, writer and musician graces the stage! He’s ably supported by carl Donnelly another TV regular on comedy panels who joins us to hone is new Edinburgh show. Tickets are £8. Box office: 01733 207239.

COMING UP... It seems Peterborough just loves Jimmy Carr and he’s sold out five times now at the Cresset. They now tell us they’re looking ahead to dates for 2014! meat in food. The last time Britain was subjected to this number of jokes via social media on a single subject was when Michael Jackson died, which caused an outbreak of 'shamoneheeheeitis'. As food scandals go, the horse meat crisis may have seemed like a big thing, but it's got a long way to go in my mind to beat the 'Great Twiglet Crisis' of 1995! What do you mean you don't remember it?! It was major news at the time... or at least it was in Oundle where I grew up. Both supermarkets ran out of them in the lead-up to Christmas '95 and there was widespread panic that stretched from Blackpot Lane to Tilly Hill Close. You couldn't get a packet of them for love nor money, let alone one of the circular tins.

THE LEVITY LAUGH-A-THON IS HERE AT LAST! It's not long to go now until the Levity Festival and DAY TICKETS have now been released for £25!

BOTTLE ROCKET COMEDY CLUB

BOTTLE ROCKET COMEDY CLUB

A few people suggested this was just the latest in a long line of my mostly funny, yet ultimately flawed ideas that go no further. Who can forget my first ever page for ESP in 2005? It featured 'Elton Towers' – a theme park idea of mine dedicated to Elton John as replacement for his cancelled gig on the Embankment. It even had a helter skelter for people to slide down on brown mats in the shape of his wig! But I have high hopes for 'GUINENESS'. It's a grand vision that starts with me commandeering my father-inlaws home brew kit, and ends with me making enough cash to build an underwater lair in the lake at Ferry Meadows. (A great way to avoid paying council tax). Originally it was going to be like the Bond villain’s lair Atlantis in The Spy Who Loved Me but I've been watching a lot of the Octonauts on Cbeebies with my 3 year-old son lately, so I have a feeling it'll look more like their undersea Octopod.

COMEDY GIGS

recently booked are Dominic Holland and Mitch Benn. There are around 150 comedy acts taking part and I can highly recommend on Friday seeing Doc Brown and Alun Cochrane, on Saturday Richard Herring and Hayley Ellis and on Sunday two of my favourite stand up comedians, Paul Foot and Brendon Burns are well worth seeing. There will also be a comedy competition on site, music, kids stuff with Ed Petrie from CBBC and the Wildcats team, as well as fairground rides, stalls and more.

It’s also good to see that Shine, the Peterborough charity supporting everyone affected by spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus, have been chosen as the Levity Festival’s official charity. For all the latest ticket details and information on all the comedy and entertainment that'll be going on head for www.levityfestival.co.uk It promises to be a huge weekend of comedy so if you're around – get involved!

Another big name who’ll be gracing the stage in Bretton is Jason Manford and tickets for his comedy show on March 27 2014 are now on sale for £24 on 01733 265705.

The news of horse meat being found in food has also ruined one of the greatest scenes in film history. The Godfather's ‘horse head on the pillow’ scene now looks more like a buffet than a murder. In fact the only way to add the surprise back to that scene is to put on a Michael Caine voice when you watch it and shout – "YOU WERE ONLY SUPPOSED TO BLOW THE BLOODY HOOVES OFF!"

The sun has a habit of making us feel full of joy and sending our sprits high as a kite so fingers crossed for some summer sun! Dressing for our climate is very hard as we leave our houses in the morning to sunshine and near enough come home to snow. Something I've never invested in is a play suit but this season they're everywhere and I actually think these are probably the best things right now for our changeable climate. They look amazing on their own or layered up with cardigans, denim jackets or blazers and if it is less than summery (or you don’t like to flash your legs) just wear over a pair of tights. Prints are still huge this season from Aztec to floral and I've picked out some of my favourite prints and styles from the high street at the moment, modelled by Simona our lovely Face of ESP. paparazzi Caught in the act? SIMONA CHEERS ON THE DRAGONS! The Dragon Boat Festival is always a sight worth seeing as the Embankment comes alive with cheers and the beat of drums as the racing takes place. The ESP Paparazzi crew were there to join in the fun and Face of ESP Simona Bajorinaite helped cheer on the teams and enjoyed a laugh or two with many of the competitors who seemed to be having a brilliant time. Carol Lester of Festival organisers, Gable Events, told ESP – “It was great to see so many new teams at the Dragon Boat Festival this year and fortunately the weather stayed fine which brought a large number of spectators down to The Embankment to join in the fun. As well as some very close races throughout the day which ended with the Hotpoint Service team from new champions, Indesit, raising the trophy, other highlights included spectacular flypasts by a Lancaster of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and the Red Arrows! “We received a lot of enquiries from visitors on the day, keen to take part in next year’s event. If you or your company would like to be on the starting line in 2014 please call 01780 470718 or visit www.dragonboatfestivals.co.uk.” For more pictures visit www.espmag.co.uk or our facebook page.

Michelle’s a jean genie for charity... We all know that lovely Michelle Keegan would look great in anything but she’s wearing this t-shirt and her jeans for a good reason. The popular Coronation Street star has been voted Sexiest Female at the British Soap Awards several times and certainly makes this charity gear look great as she lends her support to the Jeans for Genes Day appeal. This new t-shirt design has just gone on sale in advance of the big fundraising day on Friday September 20 when we’re all encouraged to don our jeans. It’s all to raise awareness and funds for Genetic Disorders UK who aim to change the world for children with genetic disorders. “There are so many genetic disorders that people don’t know exist,” says Michelle “and I love that I’m able to help raise awareness and make a difference.” Jeans for Genes Day is the well-known annual fundraising event when you wear jeans for the day and make a £1 / £2 donation. Jeans for Genes Day funds the care and support of children with genetic disorders through its grant programme. In 2013, 23 charities will benefit from the funds raised on Jeans for Genes Day. It’s a campaign Michelle, best known as Corrie’s Tina McIntyre, is keen to back – “I will definitely be wearing my jeans on Jeans for Genes Day and would love everyone to join me.” This year’s t-shirt was created in collaboration with the Edinburgh College of Art and was designed by 22 year-old student Milly Wood. Milly’s design draws on the current oriental trend whilst incorporating identical twins and the double helix that exist in genetics. This t-shirt will be showcased throughout the summer by Tallia Storm and other top UK celebrities who are supporting Jeans for Genes Day this year. Lots of other celebrities have already pledged their support including Mel C, Louise Thompson, Sophia Sassoon, Lauren Goodger and Amy Childs. While they all look great in the jeans and the new t-shirt design, there’ll be a treat for the girls when a topless male celebrity will have his jeans spray painted on with body paint to promote the campaign! Look out for that on their website very soon to see who this year’s gorgeous guy will be. The t-shirt's RRP is £20 and you can get yours to wear with your favourite denim through the website. So folks, jeans at the ready, grab your fundraising pack and get your workmates or friends geared up for a dress down day with style this September! www.jeansforgenesday.org

12 Director: Dan Scanlon. Voice cast: Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Helen Mirren Since teaming up on a permanent basis with The House of Mouse, Pixar may have lost some of their morals – primarily foregoing their ‘general’ policy of not doing sequels – but this is arguably one you wanted to see.

All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.

This time one of their most highlyacclaimed animations gets the

prequel treatment, as we see the fledgling years of Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sulley’s (John Goodman) friendship at university – when they simply couldn’t stand each other – before they became the best of pals we know and love from the 2001 film. That in itself provides some

problems, as we know where this ‘origin’ story will end up, but if done well it could be one of Pixar’s best – in comedic terms at least. One thing’s for sure, it’s going to be a hell of a box-office battle to see who wins the summer animation war, with Despicable Me 2 out as you read this very page...

This ‘magical’ thriller sees a superteam of the world’s greatest illusionists – including The Social Network’s Jesse Eisenberg – pull off a series of daring heists during their performances, showering the stolen profits on their audiences while staying one step ahead of the law. Co-stars Morgan Freeman, Mark Ruffalo and Michael Caine.

Comedy buddies Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn try and emulate the runaway success they had with 2005’s Wedding Crashers – by reteaming for this effort from the director of Date Night. They star as two old-school salesmen who try to prove they’re not obsolete, by battling brilliant students to earn a coveted internship at Google.

This will undoubtedly be this summer’s ‘Marmite’ blockbuster – you’re either going to love it or hate it. From acclaimed Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro, there’s no doubting the film’s production values, as massive robots – aided by Brit star Idris Elba (Prometheus) – take on monstrous sea creatures to prevent an apocalyptic event.

The third instalment in Edgar Wright’s trilogy of comedies starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost – after Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz – sees five friends reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from twenty years earlier. But as they attempt to reach the end of their drinking marathon, they unwittingly become humankind’s only hope for survival.

After Hugh Jackman’s mixed first outing as X-Men’s most famous son, this sequel is set after the original trilogy – taking inspiration from Frank Miller’s Japan-based adventures. Under the guidance of 3:10 to Yuma director James Mangold, he takes on samuraiwielding ninjas – as he ponders a life without his adamantiumclawed abilities.

THE LAST OF US (PS3) Out now Few games arrive with the hype of this blockbuster PlayStation exclusive – and Uncharted creators Naughty Dog have smashed it out of the park again.

#####

Set 20 years after a catastrophic pandemic, this gripping adventure follows the journey of Joel, Tess and curious teenager Ellie, across a much-changed America that’s rife with zombie-like abominations and ruthless human survivors. Amazingly, Naughty Dog takes storytelling and character development to the next level in this bona-fide contender for game of the year. In fact this masterpiece should win that title hands down.

GRID 2 (360/PS3/PC) Out now After a five-year spell in the wilderness, the Grid series makes an eyecatching return to the track. Veering much closer to an arcade racer than Codemasters’ usual simulation offering, Grid’s vast online options and single player ‘World Series Racing’ is a clever take on the tried and tested career mode.

#####

Although a shortage of tracks is hugely disappointing, petrol heads looking for a racing fix before the next-gen consoles launch won’t be disappointed. Start your engines!

REMEMBER ME (PS3/360/PC) Out now

Traditional warm welcoming atmosphere • Fully licensed bar and restaurant • Bar opens 12 noon – 12am Karaoke in bar every Friday • Hotel rooms available • Heated smoke shelter • Function rooms available – Weddings – Christenings – Birthday parties and special occasions • Live entertainment last Saturday of every month

The end of a console generation is a brave time to release a new IP – but Capcom’s Remember Me certainly doesn’t deserve to be forgotten about. Playing as fugitive memory hunter Nilin in futuristic Neo Paris, you’ll have to steal and change many a memory en-route to getting yours back.

#####

Although the control system is a tad basic, it’s the emotional story and unique memory remix scenes that are likely to make this a cult hit to remember.

RESIDENT EVIL: REVELATIONS

Why not try our new discount card this year? Pay only £10 and receive a 10% discount off all future drinks and food at the Falcon for the year. Terms and conditions apply.

1 London Street, Whittlesey, Peterborough, PE7 1BH Phone number 01733 351001

(360/PS3/WIIU/PC) Out now

Released last year as a 3DS title, Revelations took the plaudits for bringing back the ‘old school’ Resident Evil experience. And that certainly hasn’t changed in this HD port to the big screen, with the Queen Zenobia setting still rivalling the original mansion for horror and tension.

#####

Although the graphics and clunky controls aren’t as good as they should be, die-hard Resi fans that missed the handheld version should lap this up.

RUGBY CHALLENGE 2: THE LIONS TOUR (PS3/360/PC) Out now Battling the Wallabies as the British Lions is definitely the highlight, with the game nicely honed into a more enjoyable experience from the previous version – despite some obvious flaws that prevent it from greatness.

#####

Despite the lack of home nation licenses, this is the best gaming experience yet for fans.

TOUR DE FRANCE 2013 (360/PS3) Out now One game that sadly hasn’t improved much year-on-year is this latest version of the world’s most famous cycling race.

#####

Even playing as Braulio Waggons and Chris Vroome – yes, this is another game lacking licensing issues – it is a bit of a slog biking through all 21 official stages, particularly with a feel that still never gets above last gen. Simply for the hardcore fan only.

ARCANIA: THE COMPLETE TALE (PS3/360) Out now Popular fantasy RPG ArcaniA finally gets the special edition treatment by combining the well-received Gothic IV game with the ten-hour plus Fall of Setarrif expansion. This tries to add Elder Scrolls-esque elements in an attempt to be a deeper role-playing experience, but comes somewhere inbetween – leaving it as a middling entry in the genre.

#####

‘Solidly generic’ sums up this worthwhile effort.

Thanks to Andy Clucas for reviews of Call of Duty: Black Ops II & Assassin’s Creed 3.

Thanks to Andy Clucas for reviewing The Last of Us; GRID 2; Remember Me and Resident Evil: Revelations.

This is undoubtedly the best rugby incarnation yet on a home console – with more official licenses than ever before.

Joe was also well known from his time at Club Dissident which he part owned and helped manage for some years. His sister Vicki told ESP – “Myself, Mark O'Brien, Justin Stanford and Chris Cooper have got together to put on a night in his memory. City’s heart skips a beat as Olly wows the crowds… The X-Factor star was also joined by support acts Ed Drewett, Tich, Stooshe and Diana Vickers, who together made this a day to remember. With Olly having graced our city and with JLS performing on the Embankment in 2010, who knows which big names could be next.

There’s nothing better than having a couple of cold drinks in the sunshine, with live music being performed in front of you. That’s exactly what thousands of us did in June at the Peterborough Embankment. Around 15,000 people turned up to watch Olly Murs performing his hits. Were you one of the fans there? See if you can spot yourself in our pictures. I was there myself, singing along to songs such as, Heart Skips a Beat, Troublemaker and Dear Darlin – which was No.6 in the UK charts on the day he performed.

32

www.espmag.co.uk

Annette Joyce, Head of Commercial Operations at Peterborough City Council told ESP – “The concert was a great example of the potential commercial events can bring to our fantastic Embankment venue. Residents can enjoy some of the very best entertainment, which in turn generates an income that allows the city council’s noncommercial events to operate. “The Olly Murs concert and similar largely attended events we stage on the Embankment can also have a positive economic effect on the business community. People will often spend their time before or after events in our cafes, bars and restaurants and those who make long journeys to be here will book overnight stays. All of this activity really does contribute to putting Peterborough on the map and we will be looking to stage similar concerts of the same size and calibre in 2014.”

I spoke to various people at the Olly concert about who’d they’d like to see perform here in 2014. Shelley Brown from Werrington, told me – “My kids and I would love to see One Direction. The acts in Peterborough have been getting better and better year on year. Eventually they’ve got to come here, surely?” Andrew Laing added – “I think the Embankment is big enough for acts such as Take That. With the Broadway closed down, we need to use the Embankment more, and give the city a better reputation with the entertainment industry.” As soon as other names are announced for the city, you can be sure to read about them right here in ESP Magazine! Take a look at my review and video from the day on www.espmag.co.uk which is always packed with extra leisure and lifestyle news in-between issues. Mikey Clarke

HEALTH & VITALITY with Karen Devine

karen.devine@espmag.co.uk

Need a holiday to recover from your holiday? ESP’s Karen Devine explores how to truly recharge... Summertime tends to be the most popular time for recharging your batteries as you escape for your yearly holiday. Often when you come back from those weeks away the first thing you need is a holiday to ‘get over’ the holiday after the travelling, the adventure, or the running around after the kids has taken it out of you when it’s supposed to be ‘your’ rest.

How often do you want to say no but do it anyway? There are of course some things we do need to do such as go to work, organise the kids, elderly parents or others who are dependent. But we can all still at some point during our week take time to listen to ourselves and say ‘no’ when saying ‘yes’ is just not serving us.

“How often do you want to say no but do it anyway?” We don’t always have to wait for our planned major holiday to recharge our batteries, just once or twice we can pull back some of our vitality on a weekly or even monthly basis just by becoming aware of the state of where our energy/vitality is in the moment. Learning to check in with ourselves is important to be able to feel how much reserves we have or don’t have. Many people are basically running on empty and keep going until one day life forces them to stop, or they may suffer health issues such as infections, colds/flu/gut issues, or they may experience feeling low or depressed, sleep deprived or sleep hours and hours each day and still never feel recharged. Of course as I’ve written over the past months, good nutrition, hydration, sleep, detox etc is crucial for good vitality but so too is learning to say NO!

34

www.espmag.co.uk

Here are some examples – • Going out when you just want to stay in because it causes too many issues for the OTHER person so you just give in to their needs! • Giving up your time constantly to go out of your way to support others. It could be your friend who always seems to attract more and more dramas into their lives which you have to sort out or listen to! • Spending time with a person or group of people you really may have outgrown in terms of emotions, or mental stimulus or general interests. • You may also have so much negative self – talk or beliefs and perceptions you have of yourself and the world around you. This is a strong vitality robber, our thoughts and how we use them have a

direct effect on our body. Think about something amazing that happened that made you feel great, alive and excited, then change it to something that is worrying, stressful or negative around you and you instantly notice a shift in your energy! • You may also be around people that are constantly in what I call the ‘moan zone’ and pull you right down. If this is happening to you question if you have to keep contact with this person, if so, can you limit the time spent with them? The energy around us changes, (even with our thoughts we can direct it), it’s not solid it’s fluid so we can go from feeling totally low and crappy about ourselves to feeling confident, uplifted or excited very quickly by becoming more aware of it. Once you get into the ‘feeling’ of where your energy is at in the moment, you can then choose to do something about it. It could be simple things such as spending time on your own for a few hours, or a day, or whatever suits and use it as your day, a day or evening (or bit of time) to switch off the phone and computer so you can get to do things that make you feel good such as: • Listen to more uplifting sounds. • Walk in nature. • Watch an uplifting film. • Catch up when you can with some sleep.

• Spend time with a person or group that are of like minds or those people that make you feel great about who you are. • Listen to inspirational people. • Laughter – spend time with people who make you laugh or find a good film that makes you laugh. Laughter increases oxygen and reduces stress and muscle tension and importantly lifts your energy. • Get a massage, facial etc or have a spa day/weekend. • Clear out that room or cupboard that every time you look at it you feel your energy drain out! You are worth spending time with or taking time out for, so why not give it a try?! I have just spent the weekend in Liverpool with some extra special girlfriends to celebrate my birthday – it was non stop laughter for the whole weekend, so therapeutic, thanks to my fab friends for making my special birthday so much fun. SIMONA HELPS LAUNCH NEW LOOK BUSHFIELD LEISURE

There have been some fantastic improvements over at Bushfield Leisure Centre and our Face of ESP Simona Bajorinaite popped along to join the official launch. Vivacity Sports and Leisure announced the official re-opening of Bushfield Leisure Centre, as part of the Orton Summer Fayre. The official ribbon was cut by new Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor June Stokes who then took a tour of the facilities which include a fantastic new gym suite, which Simona tried out, a new reception area, 3G pitch, cricket wicket and tennis centre. Alison Hall, a Vivacity gym member was the lucky winner of £1,000 worth of vouchers from GreenWheel Cycles. The prize was presented by Jon Marsden, Vivacity Head of Sports and Recreation

and Iain Crighton, Chairman of GreenWheel Cycles to Simona who collected the voucher on behalf of winner Alison Hall. Jon Marsden, Vivacity Head of Sports and Recreation told ESP – “We hope that Alison enjoys the fantastic voucher she won through joining Vivacity gyms, and we are pleased to be able to work with GreenWheel Cycles in presenting such a great prize. It’s great that so many people attended this event, and we hope that many of those here today come along and use some of the great indoor and outdoor facilities here at Bushfield Leisure Centre.” For more information call the centre on 01733 864656 or visit www.vivacity-peterborough.com/sport-and-leisure

Free training sessions for the Perkins Great Eastern Run… Whenever you talk to a Perkins Great Eastern Run participant, it’s likely that the fantastic atmosphere on the day will come up in the conversation. Local people flood the streets to offer their support, and quite often, hand out the occasional jelly bean here and there. And with over 2,500 runners already signed up, the atmosphere looks set to be the best yet! I will also be taking part in this year’s half marathon and once again running in aid of Arthritis Research UK. Check out May’s edition of ESP Magazine online (www.espmag.co.uk) to read up on my training tips, while advice on dieting when running can be found in June’s copy. Hopefully your training is now in full swing. Remember, you don’t have to join a gym or pay for exercise classes to get fit. Peterborough has some beautiful areas for a run. Ferry Meadows and Thorpe Wood’s boating lake are a couple of my favourites. If you’d like something a bit more structured, but again, don’t want to pay anything… the latest on the PGER is that the council and Advance Performance are offering free training sessions on Wednesday nights. You’ll find the info here www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk/free-trainingsessions with the first ones being held on Wednesday July 10 and July 24 at the Peterborough Athletics Track at 7pm. So, I’m afraid lack of money is no longer an excuse for why you can’t take part in the run! I hope to see you there. Passing through that finishing line is an amazing experience you won’t forget so keep up with the training! Mikey Clarke

MEET LOUIS THE AUTHOR Here at ESP Magazine, we’ve long since championed our local hero, Eye gymnast Louis Smith MBE. We were behind him when he won his Olympic medals, there with him for his open top bus homecoming parade, with him all the way when he won Strictly Come Dancing, there when he switched on the Christmas Lights at Serpentine Green and we’ll sure as hell be there when he launches his brand new book My Story So Far with a signing session at Tesco at Hampton. Documenting his amazing journey (so X Factor!) from being diagnosed with ADHD and starting gymnastics classes aged four as an outlet for his excess energy, winning his first medal aged 14 through to his triumphs as the first Briton in over 100 years to win an Olympic medal in individual gymnastics and, of course his crowning as Strictly Come Dancing champion 2012 with his dance partner Flavia, the book promises to be a fantastically inspirational read. Jam packed with beautiful illustrations and exclusive never seen before photographs of Louis in the gym and in the dance studio, the book promises to be a must read for all fans of Louis and those who love an inspirational story of triumph and success against all the odds; we’re already turning the phone off and putting the kettle on ready for a mammoth cover to cover reading session! Whilst the book documents Louis’ story over the last 24 years, so much has happened to Louis in the past year since the Olympics that we can only summise that this will be the first of many books documenting chapters in our local boy’s career. Better make some room on those bookshelves girls! Louis Smith MBE will be signing copies of his new book on Thursday July 4 at Tesco, Serpentine Green from 4-6pm – but we have FIVE signed copies to give away just head to www.espmag.co.uk for details. GET KISSING, IT’S LUSH!

and beauty ESP’s Charlotte Jolly has all the latest health and beauty news…

What’s that I hear you ask – when’s World Kissing Day? Well I can inform you lovely people that it’s on Saturday July 6 and Lush are hosting a Guinness World Record attempt.

charlotte.jolly@espmag.co.uk

Their aim is to smash the current world record by achieving the most kisses in a 12-hour period. On the day you can head in-store from 11am, kiss a postcard wearing Lush’s liquid lips (100% vegan) and upload the photo to Twitter, Facebook or Instagram to be entered into the world record attempt. Be sure to use the #crueltyfreekisses in your tweet to spread the word that no Lush products or ingredients are tested on animals. You can even prep your lips for their big moment beforehand in the store – start by ridding them of any dry skin with a Lip Scrub which gently exfoliates thanks to a base of caster sugar – Sweet! Follow by moisturising them with Lush’s new preservative free and aerated Lip Balms. So pucker up and get kissing this July!

TANDEmONIUm You may remember that on May 28 – 31 I, along with 19 other brave cyclists, took on the challenge of cycling to Brussels for charity (on a tandem!). Well here I am to tell the tale and I even managed to come back from the 326 mile challenge in one piece! Day 1 involved us cycling from the Posh Football ground to London via the old A1 in, yes you’ve guessed it, the pouring rain! Although our enthusiasm and excitement seemed to get us through... We arrived at the City of London Travelodge wet, weary and wanting some ‘proper food’ as opposed to Jelly Babies. The hard work for Day 1 was not over though as Edward and I grappled to fit in the lift with the tandem, but we did it – hurrah! We then faced LOTS of hills, early starts, more rain, a missed ferry at Folkestone and a desperate need for something substantial to eat! The last day was kind to us with the sun coming out to play and NO RAIN! A leisurely 25 miles from Bruges

FRAGRANCE THROUGH THE DECADES WITH JOHN LEWIS On Thursday July 18 John Lewis in Queensgate is holding an evening of ‘Fragrance Through the Decades’ (No, that doesn’t mean you’ll come home smelling old) and would love you to attend. Fragrance expert Sarah Binns will be giving an insightful talk explaining how fragrance has evolved over the years, allowing you to try fragrances as well as find out more about the designers. The event starts at 6pm with tickets just £5 which are redeemable against any purchase from the Kenneth Green Associates fragrance portfolio. Make sure you book in for this exciting event at the beauty counter in John Lewis. There’ll be refreshments served on arrival with all guests receiving a luxury goody bag!

saw us arrive in the picturesque town of Gent where we deservedly devoured cheese and ham toasties and admired the stunning Gravensteen Castle. After about another 40 miles we’d arrived at our destination (via a quick stop at the Atomium on the site of the 1958 Brussels World Fair) – Grande Place Brussels! For the few days after, this tremendous tandem trip was somewhat of a blur, but I can definitely say it was an amazing experience and one that I’ll never forget. I’d like to congratulate everyone who took part but mostly thanks to Edward who was an exceptional tandem captain and who I literally couldn’t have done it without... ‘It takes two baby, it takes two baby, me and you, it just takes two’. We managed to raise a whopping £15k in total for the Freekicks Foundation which is an outstanding effort! Well done guys and thank you everyone for your support. See www.espmag.co.uk for my full report.

With hair demonstrations, free consultations and a free raffle with top prizes of a Brazilian Blow-dry or total hair make-over, re-style and finish you’d be mad not to attend.

FESTIVAL OF

COLOUR

With festival season about to kick off, here’s my pick of the best make-up fit for a field. For the 2nd year running Revlon were the Official Backstage Nail & Makeup Partner for the Isle of Wight Festival, keeping performers, celebrities and guests looking flawless. Ensure you look ‘Festival Chic’, fresh and flawless all weekend long with their amazing ‘Festival Beauty’ specials – swoon! This collection includes Revlon PhotoReady BB Cream, ColorBurst Lip Butter, Lash Potion Mascara, Baby Sticks, ColorStay 16hr Eyeshadow Quad in Sea Mist and a selection of core Revlon nail enamels. What better way to stay looking glam during a festival than with statement lips?! Make up favourite M.A.C .have collaborated with pop sensation Rihanna to create an online-exclusive colour-collection you’ll fall in love with this summer. The retro matte ‘red lipsticks’ (true Rihanna fans will appreciate that!) are a sure way to update your look with Heaux (matte berry) being my personal fave. Dark fuchsia lipsticks are set to be big this summer being the ideal shade for remaining sexy throughout long, hot festival nights. Team with Barbados Girl lustre drops (£17.50) for a ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ effect. It’d be rude of me not to mention Stila’s fabulous Countless Colour Pigments, which instantly add a pop of colour to eyes or cheeks. The vibrant pigments are created using a unique pressing and baking process. What I love about these is the variety and creativity they allow you to have; use each of the three shades individually or if you’re feeling a bit adventurous try mixing two colours together for a custom made shade. Swirl a brush in a circular motion or swipe over the entire pan for a unique streaked effect. My last piece of advice for any of you heading to a festival this year is take a good deodorant (Sure compressed Clear Aqua Crystal is a great size to pop in your handbag) and plenty of face wipes or wet wipes, they really do prove invaluable.

CLARKES OPENS IN NEW LOCATION Clarkes restaurant has joined the new dining quarter around Cathedral Square and has moved to what was formerly The Grapevine pub. at Clarkes, the same great modern British cuisine but this new location and venue really enables us to push forward. We’re confident it’s going to make a real impact right from the start – we’ve stripped out the building and really gone to town on the interior design! We’ve installed a brand new kitchen, flooring, lighting and added a new wine bar to our offer with a great selection of wines, cocktails and bottled beers, so now people can just pop in and join us for a drink if they prefer.”

After what we’re told is going to be a stunning refit with some fabulous interiors, Clarkes is due to re-open on Monday July 8 offering more fine dining in the city and we can’t wait to see it! The team behind Clarkes and the Banyan Tree have joined forces and are having a busy time of it having recently launched Café Clarkes at the Key Theatre to great reviews. Head chef Lee Clarke told ESP – “It’s the same team

There are now three dining areas for different size parties and you can hire out rooms for private functions. That’s not all – Lee tells us there’ll be a ‘chef’s dining room’ where you can watch them prepare the food and they’ll be starting a cookery school in August so you can learn some of his skills! “We’re really excited,” says Lee. “It’s definitely a real step forward – a much better venue with far more flexibility. Without the support from Dinesh O’dedra and his sister from the Banyan Tree I really couldn’t do it without them.” We’ll keep you posted with more about the opening on www.espmag.co.uk but keep an eye on www.clarkespeterborough.co.uk

Foodie fans should head to Oundle this month as the fabulous Food Festival returns from July 15 – 20.

Christian also happens to sell premium Peruvian chilli sauces Rico Picante made in the UK, which are sold in the likes of Fortnum and Mason and Partridges and we can verify these are HOT! Christian told ESP – “This is a project that me and my partner Kristina started a few months ago following the great success of Peruvian restaurants in London. Photos: Neil Golding

“Kristina has worked for seven years as a head chef in a prestigious Italian restaurant, now she dedicates all her time to learning and creating Peruvian dishes using unique Peruvian ingredients.”

RICO PERU POP UP RESTAURANT Peruvian food seems to have become a real talking point and the new trendy food choice, so it’s been great to see a Peruvian ‘pop up restaurant’ make its mark here in Peterborough. The ESP team were invited along to try it out at the second pop up night at Club Caliente in Parnwell and had a great time sampling various dishes. Run by Christian Castillo and his partner Kristina, a talented chef – the two have come up with the idea of one night only Peruvian dining – but we hope it’s set to return soon!

They’ve selected the most popular and traditional dishes and twisted them into their own style of modern cuisine. We were lucky enough to try a range of starters, including delicious flounder cerviche and golden fried potato dough stuffed with beef which was particularly good. Our favourite main course was a spicy paella type dish – with prawns, giant mussels, calamari and Peruvian style rice. It was great to sample something really different so if you like new food experiences keep an eye on the website for details of the next pop up night which will hopefully take place later this month. www.ricoperu.co.uk

The popular Street Market on Saturday July 20 will feature over 70 stalls selling everything from herbs to honey, gin, real ales and wine, fresh meat and fish, handmade chocolates, oils and vinegars, cheese, fresh fruit and veg. It’s on from 8.30am – 4pm and there will also be lots of stalls selling delicious foods for your lunch, whilst you enjoy music , learn to juggle or watch willow fruits being created. There’s plenty of off-street parking close to the town centre, with a Park & Ride facility. There are various events taking place around the area throughout the festival with everything from wine tasting to bread making workshops. On Thursday July 18 at 4pm in The Talbot there’s an opportunity to have tea with well known author, mother and granny, Jane Fearnley-Whittingstall! She’ll be giving an illustrated talk about cooking, rationing and food, as well as signing copies of The Good Granny. From July 15-19 and July 22- 25 there’s the ‘Aroundle’ a special four course menu on offer at The Falcon in Fotheringhay and the gin tasting has taken our eye on Wednesday July 17 at Amps Fine Wines in Oundle where you can learn about and taste (yes please!) different gins with various mixers. There’s plenty for the kids too including a Teddy Bears Picnic at Barnwell Park on Wednesday July 17. For details and bookings for the events visit www.oundlefestival.org.uk

THE AROMA OF ROMA... perfect, light and crusty base and means it isn’t left to bloat inside your stomach. We’ve tried it and it’s crispy and delicious! The sauces and ingredients are all made fresh and the dishes made to order – and all of course are Roman specialities such as arrabiatta and carbonara.

If you can’t visit Rome, just head for Pizza Roma on Bridge Street and you’re promised a genuine flavour of this amazing Italian city.

Talk to Carmine and his passion for the traditional Roman style dishes is clear and is the backbone to his vision for this new addition to the city’s dining out scene. Peterborough people have always enjoyed a taste of Italy but Pizza Roma offers a unique take on one of our favourite foods.

Owner Carmine Pacca was born in Peterborough and spent 20 years living in Rome where he and his cousin Leonardo Caputo shared a dream of wanting to bring an authentic restaurant to Peterborough. Now they’ve realised that ambition and want to share the taste and style of real Roman pizzas with people here.

For real authenticity their Roman chef Mauro Patarini – trained by one of the leading pizza chefs in Rome – ensures the techniques and ingredients are just as they should be. A combination of flours are used and the dough is left to rise for at least 36 hours, sometimes 4872 hours, to allow the yeast to really work. This gives a

Whether it’s intimate candlelit dining in the evenings, a quick lunchtime panini (try the new porchetta roast pork) or their new takeaway service there are plenty of opportunities to give this independent restaurant your support. This month there are two fabulous ESP offers at Pizza Roma – you can buy one pizza/pasta main course (per couple) in the evenings and get one free, or try their evening takeaway service (6pm-10.30pm) and buy one 12” pizza and get one half price – what better reason do you need to get a real taste of Rome? Just quote ESP when ordering or booking. Pizza Roma is open 11.30am – 4pm and 6pm –10.30pm Tuesday – Saturday and 11.30am – 4pm on Sundays. Tel: 01733 898111.

PIZZA ROMA – bringing you a taste of Rome in every bite

At Pizza Roma we prepare your pizza as it is done in Italy. Our Roman chef carefully combines a mix of Italian flours for our pizzas and these are left to rise for a minimum of 36 hours to create a light and crispy base. Dining at Pizza Roma means enjoying the flavors of Rome right here in Peterborough. Book a table for this evening, have lunch or why not try our take-away service.

THE BIG FAIRY PICNIC IN THE PARK Every time a child says 'I don't believe in fairies' there is a little fairy somewhere that falls down dead. The words of author J.M Barrie who got the idea for the quote when he saw last year’s 'Big Fairy Picnic in the Park'. Probably. Anyway this year it's back and on Sunday August 18 and everybody’s urged to put on their fairy dresses, take a picnic and head down to Burghley Park for an afternoon of magic. It's totally free and there’ll be activities such as a treasure trail, face painting, story telling and even a best dressed teddy bear competition. The event was inspired by Anna Olivia Hughes who sadly passed away from a brain tumour aged just 3-years-old. This year’s event will be in support of her charity Anna's Hope who’ll be accepting donations at the picnic. The picnic will start at 12pm and will finish at 4pm, for more information on the event and the Alex Jones charity visit www.annashope.co.uk.

fter the massive success of The Willow Festival last year and what was just about the only sunny weekend of the year it’s back in all its predestined glory. A change of date has scuppered my plans to be there but it won’t need me there to make it the party weekend of the year. Keep July 12 –14 free and stock up on suntan lotion as the hot sunny weather is also booked as it was last year. With its ethos in live music from the lass with a guitar just starting out on the road to seasoned professionals and old hands The Willow Festival is not about commercialism but live music. No, you won’t find a dance tent but you will find six stages and around 160 bands playing just about everything you can imagine really. There’ll be the extreme ride

fairground, art and craft display, exotic market (Ooer!) and of course the food village. Organiser Mark Ringer told me he’s looking forward to a cracking weekend – “We've had a bumper year when it comes to interest in The Willow Festival. Over 4,000 bands applied to appear at the festival and public support for the event has never been so strong. “In the past few weeks we’ve signed up sponsors New College Stamford, Rocket Park Studios and University Centre Peterborough. This has enabled the festival to showcase more acts than in previous years, the total now being 160, and with generous help from GL Events Snowdens, the infrastructure is more impressive than ever too. The Sun have

sponsored an entire area of the festival as has GP Print and Peterborough City Council have been a pleasure to work with all year. “The campsite looks as though it will be full and all of the concessions are sold out, so all that remains is for the public to come enjoy the event!” So to the bands… as I said there are dozens to see which is impossible for one person to see in one weekend but perfect for the expected 50,000 punters, so all I can do is pick out some that I would be checking were I there! So in no particular order… Fridays must-see is Empress of Fur fronted by the exquisite Venus Raygun! They play mad, off the wall, surf swamp rock’n’roll… if you like the Cramps and

horror B movies you’ll love this band. Venus is a great lead singer and quite the showgirl – think Betty Paige and Grace Slick and you’re about there, oh and a great growling yet purring voice. Guitarist Mark Vincent, described as a cool stick insect-a-billy of a guitarist, knocks out great reverberated licks out of a regulation Gretch and the rhythm section knock out beats and runs in all the right places. Having supported the legend that was Link Wray on a tour of Holland and played prestigious festivals like Boomtown Fair they have the pedigree to match the style and swagger. Check ‘em out – you will walk away smiling if not a little disturbed. Another disturbingly good band are Let’s Meet Jesus, having been around since 2011 yet the member parts being around

for an age. Expect powerhouse, dark riff-driven songs clattered out by Spike Pwoison. Again another great frontman to watch he’ll be rollin’, sweating, falling and may even be a little bit sick – but you know he will show up for you. Sam Warren on bass and Matt Glennie on drums will shovel out a bone crushing rhythm to back the crazy antics of Spike. Think a hybrid stew of Henry Rollins, King Crimson and James Brown and you’re kinda on the way. Find them on Saturday, it will assault your senses but it’ll be one from the weekend you will definitely remember. For a lazy Sunday track down Destroy DC. I wrote a bit about them a while back but now’s your chance to see them live in their first home gig. Featuring local heroes Spike T Smith and Gav King and Si ‘The Resonator’ Turner they bring you a unique fusion of ‘progressive punk’ and ‘roots & dub’ and are regarded as one of the most forward thinking and exciting bands on the current punk circuit. You know with that pedigree it’s going to be hard, loud and off the shelf of perfection. I have listened to the CD and it’s the dogs, I know live it will be better, I know it, you know it. A lazy Sunday indeed!

KARAOKE every Tuesday with Mighty Mouth - Trevor Smith

Others to watch out for on a gentler note, track down Fred’s House on Saturday – beautiful vocals and harmonies delivered with passion and skill, a great antidote to the mayhem that I’ve described before. They’ve been played on Six Music a bit and are sniffing around the next level of fame so catch them here whilst they’re free, they won’t be this time next year the way they are progressing.

REAL ALES, CASK MARQUE APPROVED, CAMRA GOLD AWARD • Proper food at proper prices served daily, Mon-Thur 11.30am-2pm and 6pm-9pm. Fri 11.30am-2pm • Sunday lunches 12.00-4pm • Function room available for private parties • See Gig Guide for bands

Rattleshack will also be worth a watch. Hillbilly farmcore country is how I describe it. Based loosely around the work of Hank Williams 3, the band spin their own take on life in the deep south with no money, no girl, no job and very little luck and it sounds a great place to be when you listen to them play it! Again they take the stage Saturday. As you can see I’ve picked out some weird and wonderful stuff for you to try out. If I have one message for the weekend it’s this – go see some different bands! You will be able to see and support the usual pub bands all year round and you do that. They deserve your support, they are warriors of live music each and every one of them. However this weekend is your chance to see something different, something new… don’t waste it.

FAREWELL… Finally, after over 10 years writing for ESP Magazine, this will be my last column. I’ve enjoyed my sentence (although I committed no crime) but it’s time to let a fresh pair of eyes and ears take on the job. Over the years I’ve met some wonderful people and I consider myself to have been fortunate to meet them. It’s been a privilege and an honour to spend time with each and every one of you. The city has, and has had some very talented and very fine musicians, promoters and venue owners and when you hear people knock it please slap them around the face with the nearest damp flip flop or wellington boot. These days I spend most of my weekends out of the city especially in

spring and summer and it’s really one of the main reasons for moving on, the job needs someone who’s out and about in the city watching local live music a lot more than I. I could write reams about the bands I see out at festivals but it’s the local bands that need the profile in the magazine. That's not to say I will have disappeared completely, if you see me come say hello and have a chat. Thanks to my wife and family for supporting my antics and thanks to the editor for putting up with my miserable typing skills and late copy. Last but not least thanks to all of you who have read the column and offered kind words in compliment and support over the years. So, that's it! Keep on rockin’ in a free world folks... keep on rockin’! Andy

The ethos of ESP Magazine has always been to push the positive about Peterborough and all our columnists have a passion for the city. Andy Slater’s been a good friend and part of our ESP family for years and we would all like to thank him for his musical musings over the last decade. Andy’s done a great job promoting local artists and the music scene and we will miss his wit and wisdom. And as for the occasional late copy… I can forgive that as it was always worth waiting for. Thanks Andy… see you at the bar, I owe you a pint! Sharon McAllister, Editor.

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…

I went to Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium a couple of weeks ago to see American rockers, Green Day supported by the Kaiser Chiefs, and although tickets cost a fair bit, it proved to me once again that the stadium rock concept is a wonderful one. A great deal of the cost is spent on the set design and the technicalities of sound and vision to bring a show to a 65,000 strong audience. The show is what it’s all about. Green Day were stunning and personally, I think the Emirates Stadium is a great venue – quite atmospheric. I know that a lot of bands are looking forward to the festival season because the open air nature of events like The Willow Festival are a real buzz with a big stage appearance. However, I still think the local pub scene is as exciting for a different reason. It can bring a really intimate atmosphere for the band and the audience alike which can’t be achieved by the vast stadiums.

HOOKER’S 20 FABULOUS YEARS

Hooker are celebrating their 20th Anniversary in July. So how much can they remember about those early days?

WOOFSTOCK – IT’S THE DOG’S! The 5th annual Woofstock festival is taking place at The Angel Inn Yarwell on Saturday and Sunday July 27/28. Woofstock is the brainchild of the Angel’s owners, Nick and Diane Lander who’ve raised massive funds for The Retired Greyhounds Trust. Nick and Diane have given a home to five retired greyhounds as pets themselves, so they’re obviously passionate about the cause. Over the two days, local musicians and bands will be playing live in the pub’s beer garden, accompanied by a real ale and cider festival and a barbecue. Although the complete list of bands awaits final confirmation, those already scheduled for the event include Recreation Ground Road (RGR), Kickback, Smashdown, Richard Gombault, Ignition, The Steradents, 101 Proof, Petrology, Lexie Green and Four Wheel Drive. It’s always good fun and a well worth a visit. For more info log on to www.woofstock.co.uk

I asked singer Trev and drummer Rob, two of the remaining original members how Hooker were formed. Rob told me – “To be precise, the original line up formed from a jam/rehearsal in a warehouse in Peterborough on July 4 1993 (which we always regard as our birthday). We spent many months just jamming and enjoying ourselves.” Trev adds – “And then someone offered us our first gig . It was at The Snooker Club in Orton Southgate. So we had to rehearse a set list of 35 numbers in eight weeks.” The band endured a few line up changes in the early years but the current members have been together for quite some time now. Rob and Trev are joined by Sean on bass, Steve on lead guitar and Pasq on keyboards. There’s always a great atmosphere at a Hooker gig and Rob told me – “We really appreciate the following we have locally and are lucky to have some great local venues to play. We have honed a set of classic rock covers over the years, with the emphasis on putting the fun factor into our show.”

“Plus there are no prima donnas in Hooker,” adds Trev. “With no egos we can just relax and enjoy the gig.”

So to what do they believe is the reason they’ve been together for 20 years? Trev – “It is the fun element and the fact that we don’t gig too often which keeps us fresh for our audience but also we look forward to performing with each other.”

Rob – “We made the conscious decision not to overplay the local area so when we meet up it’s not just another gig, it’s looking forward to gigging with each other.”

When I ask for memorable moments, most are unprintable but they remember their BMF Rally gigs and the Peterborough Beer Festival in 2003 as big moments. Hooker are booked again for the Friday night at the Beer Festival this August, but before that they have The Willow Festival and the little matter of their 20th anniversary celebration at the Ploughman’s beer festival in Werrington Centre on July 5. If you want to join the fun and celebrations you’d be most welcome.

PUB GUIDE s New

Ketton is a lovely part of this area and there’s an ancient area of heathland extending to the north of Ketton towards Empingham called Witchley Warren. This is where a large festival of community music, arts and crafts is being held on Sunday July 14. The venue is the Northwick Arms on the High Street in Ketton. Starting at 1pm the day features live folk, jazz, blues, world music and, for those who would like to join in the festivities, and maybe show or develop new talents, you have the opportunity to perform and take part in workshops of different skills. The festival, conveniently named Witchley Warren Festival, combines an open air stage occupying a small field at the rear of the Northwick Arms, with an indoor arena in the pub. The outdoor stage features performances from one of the greatest Celtic music bands in the UK, Govannen, who blend jigs and reels with traditional and contemporary Irish songs. For those, who like me, miss the Stamford Riverside Festival you’ll get the chance to see

Festival regulars Paspatou who’ll bring their world music fusion to the stage at Whitchley Warren. Also confirmed for the main stage are The Tin Pigeons who are a young, exciting up-and-coming folk act from Rutland. To add to the fun, there’s a beer and cider festival, a busker's stage which will feature a wealth of local singer/ songwriting talent as well as stalls and kids entertainments. The event is part of the 'Big Gig' a nationwide initiative to promote music activities over that weekend, and is organised by Ketton Showtime a voluntary community organisation which promotes music and the arts in the village. It organises regular folk events, theatre and dance performances at the Northwick Arms. Witchley Warren Festival is a charity event which aims to raise important funds for providing opportunities for the children at Ketton School. Looks like a very civilized way to spend a Sunday afternoon. For more information go to www.witchleywarren.co.uk

WITCHLEY WARREN FESTIVAL BEXAR COUNTY BREWERY I’ve learnt two things. The first was despite all the stories of doom and gloom and pub closures, traditional brewing is one of the few growth industries of this country right now. The second, and forgive me, I don’t mean to be blasphemous, but there is an American who can make beer! When ESP Magazine first heard of this ‘heresy’ I had to investigate. Very quietly, and unknown to most people Steven Saldana of Bexar (pronounced bear) County Brewery has been brewing ale right under our noses here in Peterborough, and it’s not your usual beer. Steven’s beer is different, aggressively and intentionally different. He incorporates flavours that challenge the taste buds, stops you dead in your tracks and makes you think. It is intelligent beer, that once drank will not

be forgotten in a hurry. Beers to savour and discuss, like ‘Chocolate Covered Banana’, made with real high quality chocolate, and ‘Humo’ flavoured with black tea, smoked over pine needles, just to name two. I’ve sampled many fine British ales and to be honest, although very nice and eminently drinkable one beer merges into the next, the breweries all walking the same path. Steven Saldana is challenging people’s expectations and taking risks. He’s not taking the easy way, but then the best is never an easy road to take. You can currently sample Bexar County Ales at Charters and The Hand & Heart in Millfield. www.bexarcountybrewery.com Mike Harris

READY TO ROCK OUT @ THE WILLOW FESTIVAL? Not long to go now until The Willow Festival. The three day event returned last year to huge acclaim and once again takes place this year on the Embankment in a purpose built arena on the weekend of July 12 – 14. Andy Slater is giving you all the TWF news in a special feature elsewhere in this edition of ESP so I won’t repeat it all here, but if you look on the TWF website you’ll see the latest list of those booked to appear over the weekend, and it’s difficult to think of a local live music name who ISN’T appearing. Add to that, the fact that there’s comedy, arts and crafts, fairground rides , and plenty of food and drink on sale inside the arena there’s something for the whole family. It’s going to be a tremendous event and the entire weekend is FREE! www.thewillowfestival.org.uk
