Inspire an artist's work about life in Peterborough's Italian community over a cup of espresso! The Italian Community Arts Project is hosting creative workshops for children aged 6 – 12 to explore their Italian identities on July 28 and July 30 at The Fleet Complex, Fletton. Peterborough-born artist Giuseppina Santoro-Ellwood (Pina) often tackles topics concerning her identity through her art and hopes to create a sculpture for the Italian community that will be exhibited throughout the city in 2015. The creative activities and conversation in these fun workshops will help Pina's research in creating the art work. “At all the events I'm really very interested in engaging using various creativities and having a relaxed informal chat with the children, teens, adults and elders about themselves, their Italian culture and connections,” Pina said.

STAMFORD CAKE CLUB SUPPORTS NEW COMMUNITY SHOP
Stamford’s Cake Club met for its June clandestine gathering at Love Stamford, on Broad Street, the town’s newest and most exciting shopping and community area. Love Stamford is part of the campaign for independent business, and supports a range of arts and crafts sellers in its openplan space, with a coffee bar (complete with half a Mini car), fabric shop, children’s play area, art and much more. This was the perfect venue for Stamford Cake Club – all about community, independent success, and lovely, lovely cake! Sixteen members shared 11 cakes, baked to the theme of ‘Love Stamford, love cake’ – either a cake you love to bake, or a cake inspired by Stamford itself. Regular member and star of TV’s ‘Great British Bake Off’ Deborah Manger brought two cakes – a coconut creation and a coffee and walnut cake that melted in the mouth. The setting, surrounded by unique works of art, lovely scarves to buy from The Little Scarf Co that several members treated themselves to, and really comfy sofas and armchairs, was perfect for this group of home bakers who meet once a month. New members are always welcome. For more info about Stamford Cake Club visit www.clandestinecakeclub.co.uk or email the organiser Sophie Douglas on stamfordccc@gmail.com

The crews raced the thirty foot brightly painted Chinese dragon boats three at a time over the 200m course on Peterborough Rowing Lake at Thorpe Meadows, watched by several thousand spectators. Races took place every 10 minutes and at the end of the afternoon, trophies were presented to the winning crew Every Rower Helps (Tesco Distribution), 2nd place went to Hotpoint Service (Indesit Company) and 3rd place to Roythornes Raiders (Roythornes Solicitors). ESP’s Susan Saunders chats to The Saturdays… If it's not rumours of romance with Prince Harry; links to hot-to-trot David Gandhi or having a baby with the undeniably handsome Marvin from JLS – life could be seen as pretty boring... That is, unless you've had 13 top 10 hits, sold 5 million records and performed at Wembley Susan Saunders stadium, which, along with many other feats, is exactly what this month's featured popstar sensations have done. Step up and take a bow, The Saturdays – you've done us proud!
T
his month, I spent some time chatting to The Saturdays’ very own Mollie and Vanessa in-between dog walking and the like, to get up to speed on the release of the forthcoming Greatest Hits album and tour (more on that later) and other important topics – such as twerking! Not one to beat around the bush, I had to ask what most of us think of when told a Greatest Hits album is on the way. Are The Saturday's breaking up? Do the band secretly hate/love each other? Worry not dear reader, Vanessa was thankfully quick to reassure me; “We have heard this quite a bit before but we’re not splitting up. We’ve been together for seven years so we just felt like it was a celebration of all of the hits – it’s crazy. We’ve been around a long time now and enjoyed some great hits and we’d like to enjoy quite a few more.
14
www.espmag.co.uk
“We want to carry on performing and bringing out singles and albums – I think we’ve got a good few years left performing as a band. We’re definitely not breaking up!” Phew. As Vanessa reminded me, the girls had already been together for a long time – most girl bands just don't last that long! I was therefore interested to find out from Mollie what the key was to longevity nowadays... And after watching two series of The Big Reunion (where it turns out the bands you used to love being together, actually hated each other) whether the girls actually get on. Mollie enthused: “We’re all really close because we’ve been working so closely for seven years – we’re all totally inseparable. I do live really close to Frankie so we hang out quite a lot outside of work, she feels just like my sister.
“I think it’s just the fact that we all have the same goal, we want to achieve the same thing and we’ve never stopped each other with our individual stuff that we’ve done aside from The Saturdays. It’s nice to be able to do The Saturdays fulltime but dip in and out of our other things – we’ve always supported each other through that so that’s definitely a big reason as to why we’ve stayed happily together – we all love being in The Saturdays too, which helps! We’ve really got it in a good place right now.” Vanessa, who has treaded the pavement like the rest of us Peterborough posse, was here in the city last year hosting a fashion show in Queensgate, shared her highlights since joining the group. “Performing in Wembley was definitely a highlight – just being able to say ‘hello Wembley’ was one of the most amazing feelings in the world, second of all was getting the number one with ‘What About Us’ because we’d waited for that for so long and worked so hard that it was amazing to get that finally.”
“Obviously we’re not in rehearsals yet but this tour is going to be bigger and better than ever.” Mollie chipped in with – “We’re really looking forward to the tour. I love seeing all the fans and I love planning all the costumes too – with all the costume changes, special effects – will we pop out of the stage, won’t we? There’s just so much to be planned for the tour, we love doing a big show, we don’t do anything by halves. We really go full out – so loads to look out for!” Now, I shouldn't have my favourites, both ladies were equally lovely, however, chatting to Mollie was especially nice considering we both met at X Factor Bootcamp in 2007, when she was in girl band Fallen Angelz (made up of Nikki, Bobbi, Rachelle and Mollie) and I was in a girl band called Blush. On throwing this historic nugget into the mix Mollie
So what's in store with this Greatest Hits tour I wondered? Vanessa: “With the forthcoming tour, I’m looking forward to the rehearsal and learning all of our new routines – it’s going to be really, really fun and performing with all the bands. Rehearsals kick off the beginning of August – every single day – it’s so exciting.
Susan in girl band Blush
exclaimed – “Oh my gosh – amazing! Such a small world. It was the year after bootcamp that The Saturdays released our first single and here we are talking again – that’s so funny!” Maybe this is where I was going to get the Big Reunion style dirt. Had her former band mates stopped talking to her after she left the band to join The Saturdays? Mollie in Fallen Angelz
“They were really supportive actually. They’ve been supportive the whole time, which made it easier – they’ve been great and really happy for me.” Ah bless – how could you be mad with Mollie? She’s just delightful! I had heard the same sentiments from one of Mollie’s former band mates, Rachelle Glover, who I met a few years ago on a music video shoot.
Vanessa in Queensgate
“She’s so lovely isn’t she? I heard from her the other day because it was my birthday so I only spoke to her a few days ago which was nice [happy belated birthday Mollie] – it’s great that we’ve stayed in touch.” Not strictly on topic but if you're anything like me, you can't get enough info on the Royals, their whereabouts and the like, so you would have read about her links with now eligible bachelor Prince Harry. What was that time and attention like?
“It was really weird – I don’t think you can ever really get used to the attention about things like that. It’s kind of just an odd thing, though I know when I was The Saturdays growing up, I just wanted to know all of these things so I don’t blame people for wanting to know the same about me. It’s strange that so many people had interest in it. I think that’s why someone like Taylor Swift has got it so well because she includes it in her songs. We love her songs but even more so, we love hearing about her love life – people just have an interest in it.” Harry’s loss was certainly Mollie’s LA-based, top US music producer boyfriend’s gain. “I’m now in a relationship with a lovely guy called Jordan Omley who I’ve been with for a year and a half. He lives in LA so it’s kind of a long-distance relationship – you just kind of get used to it after a while. We’re really happy.” If a Greatest Hits album and tour weren’t enough to look forward to from The Saturdays this year, worry not, there’s plenty more in store – watch this space! The Saturday’s Greatest Hits album (bursting at the seams with must have tunes) is released on August 11. From September 7, The Saturdays will take their new album on the road, performing to fans in cities across the UK, kicking off in Glasgow then Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham and Cardiff amongst others. The Saturdays also proudly present their ‘Greatest Hits Live!’ tour in partnership with Garnier’s Ultimate Blends, a new haircare range that’s been blended for Britain for gorgeous hair that’s full of life – just like our girls! BACK IN THE DAY...
...THE ACADEMY Hitting the town at the weekend back in the day you were either one of the masses (a ‘townie’) or one of the minority (‘alternative’).
T
his divide has barely changed over the generations and when I was in my prime 20 years ago you were either a trendy / popular bar and nightclub reveller or you went to the Sugar Club, which has been held at several different venues over the years. As far as trendiness was concerned, The Bar and Toho were undoubtedly the places to be seen in but they peaked and faded and sadly aren’t operating today. But when it comes to standing the test of time and consistency, The Academy (now Edward’s) has to be one of the best. The Solstice and Yates’s are also survivors of the last millennium but for me at least, The Academy edged it as a perfect pre-nightclub stop-off. It’s still brimming with young people today under it’s new guise of Edward’s and the reason this venue remains so popular is because it doesn’t try over complicate its offering. At the time The Academy sat like a fork in the road that

headed to different nightclubs. Across the road was Rinaldo’s and further along to the left was Quo Vadis. To the right of The Academy you could make your way to 5th Avenue or Liquid.
be seen though any of the large window panes and for upstairs you were able to have an intimate conversation at a table while strategically placing your hand on her knee.
There’s no doubt its location has always been a contributing factor to its success. Equally, its music policy made the venue non-offensive and one I’d recommend to visiting out of town friends. The Academy didn’t do cheese. Instead it served as a starter before the big event main course nightclub dish that awaited you.
Another nice touch was the balcony. There’s something settling about being able to lean over a balcony and in a bar it means you can monitor who’s coming in and who’s leaving and this advantage, before everyone had mobiles to text on, was an added bonus.
There always seemed to be a queue too and this meant it was a place everybody wanted to be seen in. Once inside The Academy was big enough to mingle from one group of chicks to another without the worry of having to wear your Southern Comfort and lemonade down the front of your Ben Sherman. What the venue also did very well was to provide ample seating on both floors. For downstairs this meant you’d
Today Edward’s has diversified its offering somewhat but the core vibe it gives off is very much the same as it’s always been. The venue’s always been an inviting one and a place where the majority of revellers think well of it. I suspect if we were ever to lose Edward’s then we’d lose the very essence of what makes hitting the town on a Friday or Saturday night such a great release. Long live Edward’s and the hundreds of stories I’m sure it can tell…

PEP’S LOCAL HEROES:
MEET ‘HANDS OF STONE’ IN SEPTEMBER
PHIL ELMER Regular readers will know that I reserve this section of my column for people who have influenced me in some way, for people I respect and for people I admire.
Fight fans will get the chance to meet one of the best middleweight boxers of all time when ‘hands of stone’ Roberto Duran graces us with his fearsome presence at The Solstice on Thursday September 11. Duran is the latest in a long line of boxing greats brought to us by promoter Kevin Sanders. The Panamanian fighter held four titles at four different weights and was the second boxer to have fought the span of five decades, the first being Jack Johnson. Some of Duran’s finest moments came during the 1980s when the middleweight division was blessed with opponents such as Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns. This is sure to be a night for avid boxing followers not to miss. For tickets call: 07872 601467.
It’s for these reasons that I’m beginning to wonder why I’ve singled out Phil Elmer for such an accolade to be one of my local heroes! Only joking Phil… And it’s Phil’s sense of humour and his ability to drink copious amounts of red wine without falling over that deserve hero billing. Oh, and I guess it’s important to also mention Phil’s long standing commitment to Peterborough Rugby Club and support of local sport in general. Phil’s always been good to me. He kept me busy and motivated by letting me contribute to the rugby club match day programme while I was out of work. He also understood at the time how important maintaining my profile and networking was to me and invited me to numerous club lunches. I can’t quite place where or when we met but I would guess it may have been in one of the executive areas at Posh back in the late 1990s and it may have involved a glass or two of Chilean red. Either way if there’s one thing I have Phil to thank for it’s my love of running. I was becoming bored with the gym and was tempted to give competition running a go but needed a confidence booster – someone to tell me I could do it – and Phil became that someone. He convinced me to enter my first 10k where he would act as my pacer. I remember turning up on a moderately cool but cloudy day looking completely out of place with my attire. The temperature was probably around 10 to 12c but I was worried about feeling cold and was wearing a base layer top, vest, thin running jacket, leggings and shorts – plus a stupid headband like the one John Travolta wore in Staying Alive. I clearly looked like a t*t but Phil – who was probably in stitches inside – didn’t mock me. Instead he suggested I might want to run with my jacket tied around my waist, so I took his advice and I did. Looking back I wish he told me to lose the headband but he didn’t. Phil could see I was nervous but he was brilliant with me as we waited for the start. It was at this point in our relationship that I really began to appreciate his sense of humour. Like all of us Phil’s had his ups and downs but I’ve rarely been around him when he’s not smiling, laughing and joking. He has the right attitude towards life and being around Phil is always an uplifting experience. That 10k in the end felt like a walk in the park for me and it was all
thanks to Phil’s constant chatter to get me round. I clocked a time of just under an hour and the running bug had got me. After that I regularly finished 10k’s around the 45 minute mark and it was Phil’s pearls of wisdom that gave me the confidence to tackle every race. I saw Phil recently (drinking red wine strangely enough) and I reminded him of how he got me into running. I’ve practically stopped competition running today because of one injury excuse after another but Phil did suggest cycling. Knowing how Phil will be there to guide me all the way, I’m tempted even if his water bottle will probably be full of the red stuff! Jesus drank red win Phil, so as far as I’m concerned it’s a sin not to. See you in a few weeks – you supply the Chilean and I’ll get the pizzas.
With the summer now well underway there’s plenty of two-wheeled fun to be had not too far away from home and BMW dealership Balderston is leading the ride-outs. The first is Boston Bike Night on Thursday July 3, which is organised by the Boston Motorcycle Riders Association. The event is now in its 17th year and will see riders of motorcycles, scooters, trikes and sidecars descend on Boston town centre where they’ll fill car parks with an array of machinery covering all types of makes and models from sports bikes, tourers and classics to custom machines. Not only is the event a Mecca for riders and fans of motorcycles, it’s also a great family night out. Last year more than a thousand bikes and three thousand people visited Bike Night. For more info go to www.bostonbikenight.co.uk The second of July’s motorcycle events where riders are welcome to cruise with the Balderston crew is the Charity Bike Night held at the Lifeboat Station, Tower Esplanade in Skegness on Friday July 18. Here you’ll get guided tours of the lifeboats, there’s plenty of refreshments on offer and of course loads of bikes to have a look at. Is your training for the Perkins Great Eastern Run hotting up? around 3pm, so try and avoid this time – and get yourself a running hat if possible to reduce risk of heat stroke. 3) It’s tempting to get the energy drinks out in full force to give you that boost, but nothing beats good old fashioned water, especially in this heat. Try and resist the temptation and stick to the Evian (other brands also available!). 4) Try different forms of exercise outside too! Skipping, weight lifting, boxing – whatever you feel like to get you in shape and handling the heat.
I’ve been looking forward to the summer since, well, last summer. But one thing I didn’t count on was the recent mini heatwave, and as it is now summer let’s hope there’ll be more! However, as I ran my third mile on one of the sunniest days yet and approached the daunting ascending vision of the ‘Castor hill’, I suddenly realised that 24 degree heat can feel on par with the Sahara Desert. Myself and Dinomite (my training partner and Perkins Great Eastern Run mascot, who also happens to be a dinosaur) needed to know more about how to handle the heat. So here’s our ‘official’ research: 1) Get training outside now. It might be tempting to get on the treadmill in the nicely air conditioned gym – but there’s nothing like training on the surface you’ll actually be running in. And you never know, it could be a very warm day in October. 2) Start off running in the mornings or evenings if you can, when it’s a bit cooler, to try and get yourself adjusted to the higher temperatures. Temperatures usually peak
18
www.espmag.co.uk
5) Use a heart rate monitor if possible. If you’re worried about overdoing it in the heat, a heart monitor can help you keep on track. You can purchase one from as little as £7. Your maximum recommended heart rate changes with age, so check Google (other search engines also available!) to see what your limit is. I’m trying to follow my own advice and swap sunbathing, BBQ’s and Pimms for running shorts and cereal bars. Let me know how you’re getting on yourself via the ESP Twitter and Facebook pages. Also, maybe you have some running tips of your own? Give us your comments and you might just get a mention in next month’s ESP! And no worries if you haven’t signed up to the Perkins Great Eastern Run, or started training ‘properly’ yet – BUPA have an official 12 week training plan for half marathons, so there’s still plenty of time, even for beginners. The race takes place on Sunday October 12. Sign up now by visiting www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk and keep checking ESP Magazine for more training tips from myself and Dinomite. Mikey Clarke

So, with our friends celebrating Independence Day across the big pond I thought it was only fair we celebrate some of our beautiful independent retailers that are on offer to us. I love to visit independent shops where I can, not just for the fact they can offer something different but also for the more personal service you receive from them. In Peterborough I’ve pulled together a collection from the newly refurbished Clues Menswear who have some fantastic men’s labels in and Tahlias Closet who have now branched out into women’s clothing alongside their stunning jewellery range. Both situated in the Westgate Arcade in Queensgate Shopping Centre, this little arcade has become a hive of activity and home to a few independents making it a definite point of call on your shopping days. I also visited Faze 4 on Long Causeway where they stock some big names in the jewellery world but still offer that attention to detail in service. My travels then took me into Stamford to 23seven situated on Stamford Walk to see their beautiful collection of summery brights for both men and women.

Fear no more, Project Denim is coming to Queensgate on Friday September 5 to help you avoid a denim disaster! No matter what your body shape is – whether you're a gorgeous classic hour glass or high fashion model thin – get scanned by the high tech body scanner that will help you discover the denim diva within. The scan is private and confidential so if you're feeling shy there’s no need to worry. Talk with stylists afterwards about your results and they’ll help you look fabulous based around what jeans flatter your body shape and the shoes to top off your look. “Project Denim is really exciting. With the body scanner and the professional stylists, our customers will receive a thorough consultation and I’m sure they’ll leave with some great new style ideas,” said Queensgate's Centre Director Sam Eastwood. If you'd like to get styled at Project Denim, book online Sharna Ridge from August at www.queensgate-shopping.co.uk.
MEET QUEENSGATE’S NEW FASHION BLOGGER…. “Hi! I’m Cindy – Queensgate’s new fashion blogger and I’ll be at Project Denim to trial the body scanner for myself and find out what style of jeans I should be wearing for my shape. Be sure to follow the blog to see a fun video of my scanning experience, as well as to keep up to date on the hottest trends from around Queensgate. I’ll be sharing my pick of the best fashion finds from about the centre, style-spotting customers and showing you how to style items to stay on trend each season.”

Top 5 Tips To Make The Most Of Your Holiday 5) Unfortunately some reps would rather persuade you to go on an excursion that gets them more commission. For a completely honest opinion on trips that are best for you, ask the locals. 4) Drink plenty of water and add a little more salt to your food. You’ll be sweating a lot and will need both to avoid feeling very ill and dehydrated. 3) ALWAYS apply lotion. Do not think that a cloudy day means not having to protect your skin. The sun’s rays still get through and even the cloudiest of days can leave you sunburnt.
Confessions of a ...
HOLIDAY REP
Booking your holiday? Mikey Clarke reveals what really goes on behind the scenes…
In my three years of working abroad, the most common question I’d be asked by holidaymakers is “What happens behind the scenes?” As it’s now that time of year when we all start to head off on our summer holidays, I thought I’d fill you in on a few things your representatives could be getting up to instead of being tucked up nicely in bed. Being a former rep myself, I can see right through the overly smiley ‘family friendly’ image the hotel staff portray. Don’t get me wrong, during working hours most reps are professional but when the uniforms are off, it’s often a completely different story.
bar, around 100 drunken people actually went back to their jobs. It was soon made quite clear to the holidaymakers that staff training did not actually take place. In one hotel a professional family show was taking place where a friend of mine named Andy had the simple task of pressing play on a CD player from the DJ booth. As he leant across to the sound system, he fell over and knocked his head quite badly. Meanwhile, a Take That tribute band was standing awkwardly on stage with no music and the focus firmly on Andy lying on the floor – barely conscious. He was too drunk to press ONE button. Around the same time, at a different hotel, and also under the influence of a considerable amount of booze, one family entertainer blurted out the ‘F’ word over the microphone during a game of Bingo – after dropping the bingo balls all over the stage. There’s nothing quite like a hundred children asking their parents “What does that word mean?” to spoil a family night out. And elsewhere on the island, another Rep was running for his life from the guy whose wife he’d just tried to snog. All this (and much more!) was all happening around the same time. Don’t quote me, but I believe the company I worked for received more complaints in that one night than they did throughout the whole summer season.
“...another Rep was running for his life from the guy whose wife he’d just tried to snog.” Firstly I should confess what really happened when the company I worked for in Ibiza announced at all their hotels on the island – “There’ll be no representative present today between the hours of 10am and 4pm.” All the reps were supposedly on ‘training’. In reality this was a rare team bonding day taking place for all the staff. We were having a great time. We were treated to private entry into a top Ibiza nightclub with a free bar! But things eventually turned bad. After 4pm, many of the team members were unbelievably asked to return back to work. Yes, after six hours of taking full advantage of a free
One particularly embarrassing night abroad for me is the time I offered to fill in for a singer who’d called in sick at the last minute. I printed off the lyrics to one of his songs that I didn’t know too well and attached the paper to the back of the speaker I was standing next to. The plan was that whenever I needed to know what the next line of the song was, I’d take a sneaky look at the lyrics. It would seem that one bratty child had caught onto my plan. I was two lines into my song when the boy ran past the stage and snatched the piece of paper. I didn’t know
what to do. I perhaps should have stopped the music and been honest with the audience but instead, I continued singing… the most uniquely wrong version of ‘Uptown Girl’ ever. My made-up on the spot lyrics went something like, “Uptown Girl, she’s been purchasing a Halzelnut Whirl, as long as anyone with hot tin can, she’s been living like a proper batman.” The lyrics made no sense at all – leaving the backing singers standing silently bemused. Although there are lots of laughs and larking about, there was the odd person who went too far and found themselves on a plane home. One holidaymaker decided to buy a video of his stay showing beach volleyball and silly drinking games. The rep putting it together thought it would be funny to give the guest footage of something else! Picture the scene... an eighteen year-old gets the family together to show them what a great time he had on holiday. He switches on the DVD player, presses play and suddenly the screen displays what can only be described as… err… hardcore blue material. I don’t think his Nan would have approved.
2) Tell your waiters you want to try something new, and see what they recommend. 1) Happy kids result in a happy holiday. Always be prepared for delays on trips or in restaurants. Having a couple of magazines or crayons in your bag for your children could save you a lot of unnecessary stress.
Top 5 Tips To Becoming A Holiday Rep 5) Be specific! You can apply for different roles such as entertainer, customer service, kids club, etc. If you say you’re happy to do anything, you will not get the job as it just looks like your applying for a free holiday. 4) Be yourself. I’ve seen people applying to be an entertainer and literally dance into the interview room. Don’t be stereotypical of the role you’re applying for. 3) Don’t think that just because the summer season’s started that it’s too late to be hired. When people decide to leave the company, a replacement’s often needed at short notice. Also, summer’s the perfect time to apply for a winter season job. 2) You’re never too old! Not all reps are 18 – 21 as they show on all these TV shows. In reality, people of all ages are working abroad. 1) Give it a chance. If you’re employed as a rep, the first six weeks are always the hardest. After all, you’re in a new home, a new job, a new country, etc. Most people don’t know till after the six weeks whether the job is really for them or not.

The life and times of an estate agent…

righting house selling wrongs. E
state agents are about as well thought of as politicians, bankers and journalists in some circles… all thanks to a small minority who’ve tarnished their image. We can see it now – that 80s image of a mobile phone wielding wise guy in a sharp suit you’d cross the road to avoid. Similar to the stereotypical image of the journalist camping out in your bins! All you want to do is buy, sell or rent – does it have to be that hard?! This is where the guys at Woodcock Holmes step in as your local independent estate agent superheroes – thankfully not wearing their pants over their trousers! Back in 2002 over a pint down the pub Adrian Woodcock and Neil Holmes knew they had to rescue the image of the estate agent and decided to use
their extensive experience to set up their own business and right some house selling wrongs! “We looked long and hard at what we could do differently and what we felt was missing from the market. We quickly gained an image of a young, dynamic Estate Agent and we were determined to provide an unrivalled service.” Since then the team have been on a mission to clean up the industry’s image – “More often than not, people's perception is that all Estate Agents are the same. We pride ourselves on being different. Firstly we’re independent – this means we have the flexibility to offer a marketing package to suit our client’s needs. We’re able to make decisions quickly without going through a chain of people or unnecessary red tape. We use all the major portals including
Rightmove and Zoopla. We’re members of Move With Us, the largest group of independent Estate Agents in the UK. Membership is very sought after and we are consistently reviewed to ensure we meet their high expectations. “There has been talk of licensing all Estate Agents which we’d whole heartedly support. This we believe would increase the credibility of our industry and make sure all Estate Agents work with the same ethics as Woodcock Holmes.”
Adrian Woodcock
So no capes and super powers – just passion and enthusiasm for doing a good job and dare we say it… ethics! Perhaps it’s safe to go back on to the streets folks and start looking for a new home.

Melissa McCarthy continues her rise into one of Hollywood’s most bankable female stars – and her latest comedy jaunt should solidify that. After the success of Bridesmaids, Identity Thief and The Heat, she stars as a luckless woman on an out-of-control downward spiral: she’s broke after being fired from her job at a greasy burger joint, which leaves her with no money to pay for her battered car, and to make things worse, has just found her husband cheating with the next door neighbour. But hitting the road with her harddrinking grandma (Susan Sarandon) – who turns out to be her only source of cash – could be just the thing she needs to escape her troubles, and get her hapless life back on track.
TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION
THE DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
Second trilogies usually struggle to match the first set – but this is all of a sudden tracking to potentially be the biggest film of the summer.
After the surprising success of the ‘Rise’ reboot of the franchise, Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his growing nation of genetically evolved apes are back – and threatening to be the planet’s most dominant species.
Mark Wahlberg replaces Shia LeBeouf as the male lead, starring as a mechanic who discovers a deactivated Optimus Prime (again voiced by Peter Cullen) – technology which is being sought by shady outside agencies – in Michael Bay’s fourth instalment, which is set four years after Dark of the Moon. Bates Motel’s Nicola Peltz and Irish heartthrob Jack Reynor are the young stars, with Dinobots – including fanfavourite Grimlock – being introduced to the mix. Fingers-crossed this is as good as the original, because the second and third film were an absolute mess Mr Bay.

HERCULES This big-budget re-telling of the legendary Greek demigod is going to be a tough sell – but with Dwayne Johnson headlining it always has a chance.
Set ten years after the first film – where a devastating virus has wiped out a lot of the world’s population – a small band of human survivors try to make peace with the apes, but that proves to be short-lived, and both sides are brought to the brink of war.
He’s one of the most popular movie stars around at the moment, and his presence as the powerful lead character – alongside the veteran presence of John Hurt and Ian McShane – may just make this a hit. After surviving the infamous twelve labours, his life as a sword-for-hire is tested when the King of Thrace and his daughter seek his aid in defeating a tyrannical warlord.
Zero Dark Thirty’s Jason Clarke takes over male lead duties from James Franco – who is rumoured to appear in a posthumous cameo – with Gary Oldman and Brit star Toby Kebbell (who will soon play Dr Doom in the Fantastic Four reboot) co-starring, and Cloverfield director Matt Reeves helming.
The only problem is there’s already been one movie based on the character out earlier this year – the Kellan Lutz-starring flop Legend of Hercules – and it’s directed by the much-maligned X-Men: The Last Stand helmer Brett Ratner, so in blockbuster terms this is an unknown quantity.

This is a bit like Ubisoft’s inaugural Assassin’s Creed game – a fantastic first effort which will undoubtedly grow the series into a flourishing franchise. Offering a gripping open world experience – as you star as brilliant hacker Aiden Pearce in a technologically controlled city – this is a genuinely astonishing next-gen game at times, only hampered by tedious car chases and a few minor niggles. But the hacking abilities and stealth options add great weight to a generally exceptional all-round experience – particularly when you factor in some great side quests – leading to a gleefully dark and meaty campaign. With truly outstanding production values – this dog really has plenty of bite.

You star as an American war hero who wakes up after a 14year coma to find an alternative fictional world of the sixties – one in which the Nazis rule the globe with an iron fist after winning World War II. While the shooting mechanics don’t offer anything truly groundbreaking, the alternate historical story – which takes twelve hours plus with some exploration thrown in – compelling characters and high production values, makes this one of the better shooters to hit new consoles so far.

This excitingly-premised original game sadly fails to deliver on its huge potential – despite showing flashes of ingenuity. The central concept is fairly enticing – in gaming terms at least! – solving your own murder from the afterlife after being brutally murdered by a masked killer in the infamous Massachusetts town of Salem. But while this dark, detective thriller offers some nice supernatural twists – including interrogating ghosts of the slain citizens – it feels too scripted, with sometimes quite uninteresting lulls, to fully utilise its intriguing ideas. Fortunately though, for these ideas alone, it’s well worth a look.

LONE SURVIVOR (15) Mark Wahlberg headlines this ‘based on a true story’ action-drama, as a part of a Navy SEALs team’s ill-fated 2005 mission to neutralise a high-level Taliban operative in deepest Afghanistan. He’s joined by some of Hollywood’s hottest young actors, Taylor Kitsch (John Carter), Emile Hirsch (The Girl Next Door) and Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma) – along

with Hulk star Eric Bana – as the unit are ambushed and left to fight for their lives alone with absolutely no outside support. Despite generic storytelling and a touch of self-importance, this is a genuinely gutwrenching film that captures the intensity of combat under fire – and is a worthy slice of home entertainment.

I’m no mechanic but they’re really simple to work on they’re like Meccano, you just need basic skills… and help from a few friends!” So does Trevor have a nickname for his wheels? “Only when it breaks down!” he laughs. As any classic Lambretta owner will no doubt appreciate they’re temperamental little beauties and Trevor has the scars to prove it! Trevor’s regularly out an about on his Lambretta, attending rallies and getting out on the local scooter scene. So why does he love it so much?

“I just think the sleek Italian styling of a scooter from the 60s made in Milan is just the business really, it ties in with the band I’m in, and the Ska scene I got into when I was 11 years-old, probably due to Quadrophenia being released at the same time. I was too young to ride one then but have always loved the scene.” And would he ever part with her? “Only if I get another one – I really enjoyed the restoration process.”

She was a wreck when he first took her on but just look at her now!
Trevor’s equally enthusiastic about the local scooter scene which seems to be thriving with the Peterborough Lambretta and Scooter Club, the Whittlesey Scooter Club and soon Trevor’s own club he’s getting together – the Flatlanders Scooter Club. As a Vespa rider myself I can totally see the appeal and it’s great to see such a buzz around the scene.
“I bought her back in March 2011. I’ve always been into the scene and have had a scooter before. It was a total wreck needing renovation so I was able to tailor make it to my design. It’s quite traditional but with a modern edge with

With World Cup fever as hot as the players’ dressing room in Brazil you’ll no doubt be celebrating/drowning your sorrows (delete as appropriate) with a few bevies, but don’t forget if you downed a few the night before, you might still not be OK to hit the road the morning after! The Safer Peterborough Partnership’s reminding drivers of the legal and personal consequences of drinking and driving during the summer months as it takes a lot longer than most people think for alcohol to pass through the body. On average it takes around one hour per unit of alcohol, though this can vary depending on a number of factors. So there’s a real risk that even if you’re one of those good people who’d never dream of driving after drinking you might still unwittingly end up over the limit the next day
We’ve been asking you to get in touch and tell us about your Pride & Joy – a vehicle you love now or have owned and loved in the past. This month Trevor Hart, well known as bass player with successful local soul band the Motor City Vipers has made my day with this sexy little beast.
DON’T GET A RED CARD ON THE ROADS THIS SUMMER
This includes people going about everyday activities such as driving to work, doing the school run, or popping to the shops or to see friends. If you drive at twice the legal alcohol limit you are at least 30 times more likely to cause a road crash than a driver who hasn’t been drinking. Any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive so don’t risk getting a red card on this one! www.think.direct.gov.uk/video-morningafter

CALLUM’S GOT SKILLS! A quick shout out to local student Callum Byrne who’s proved he IS the sharpest tool in the box! He’s shown that he has got what it takes to be the best, as he qualifies for the National World Skills Competition in Mechanical Engineering. Prospective mechanic, Callum is studying the Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair qualification at Peterborough Regional College, and recently competed against the top 25 students from across the nation in heats held at the Jaguar Land Rover Academy in Warwick. Out of the 26 students that competed, only six were selected to progress on to the National World Skills competition in Birmingham in November. Callum successfully made it into the top six, by qualifying first in the competition! As part of the heats, Callum, who’s employed as an apprentice at Chapel Motor Repairs in Baston, had to complete six tasks that covered different areas of a vehicle ranging from inspecting a vehicle, to diagnosing and repairing its faults. Each task lasted up to 45 minutes and was marked for competence and skill. If successful in the next round Callum will go on to compete in the prestigious World Skills final competition, representing the UK in Rio De Janeiro in Brazil!

HolIday HeroeS Worried about how to survive the holiday season without any hair faux pas or beauty blunders? Worry not, as our much loved local hair and beauty experts have revealed their top holiday survival tips as well as their ‘can’t leave behind’ products. Michael John’s top summer hair care product is Straighten Out by BedHead TIGI which helps to protect up to 98% humidity and keeps hair straight for a whopping 48 hours! Perfect for hot summer days in this country but even better if you’re going abroad as no one wants to do a ‘Monica’ from Friends. The one bad thing about going on holiday is that if you have coloured hair, it fades very easily so Michael John’s can’t leave behind product would be a good colour shampoo and conditioner such as SP Colour Save. Jannette at Ego Beauty advises to opt for trouble free lashes for your holiday by having an LVL lash lift. This treatment helps to lift the lashes so that they’re all visible before they’re tinted to add that extra wow factor. At £40 this treatment is well worth the pennies and will save you buying your normal waterproof mascara as there’s simply no need for it! Melanie Richard’s Hair Boutique’s top tip for your tresses if you’re going away is to make sure you have a trim before you go and to use an intensive hydrating hair masque both before and after your holiday. Richard tells us that Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask is one of the best out there. What wouldn’t they leave behind? Definitely not their Wella Hair & Skin hydrator spray which helps keep sunbleached locks moisturised. Girls take note! Our local skin experts My Body Essentials top skincare advice is to be prepared for the sun by regularly using a body brush or loofah in the bath or shower to exfoliate the whole body 2-3 times a week. This might sound like a lot of effort but it will stimulate blood flow to give your skin a healthy glow as well as boosting collagen to give skin a smoother look, and you know what that means don’t you? Yes, less cellulite! Their ‘can’t leave behind’ product just has to be Image Prevention + Ultra Sheer Spray with SPF45 protection to protect skin from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays. So if you weren’t sure what hair and beauty products to take away with you this summer, now you do thanks to our lovely local experts. Just save enough room for them in your suitcase as they’re sure to save you from any holiday mishaps that can so easily happen to the best of us.

I’m lovINg... Clinique Super City Block SPF40.
This product really is a skin saver! I take it with me on holiday every year and this year was no different. Not only can you use it daily to protect your skin from the elements and free radicals but it contains an SPF 40 so is great for protecting your face when soaking up some rays abroad and is perfect for even the most sensitive of skins. You can wear this alone (which is what I do when I go away) or use it as an invisible under makeup primer year round. After cleaning skin, simply apply to cheeks, forehead, nose, chin and blend!

WELL
BEING with Karen Devine

TIME TO GET YOUR BODY IN BALANCE Well it looks like summer has arrived at last as I write this and that means it’s time to enjoy the benefits of tasty fresh fruits and veggies! Naturally in the summer, seasonal foods have more water content to help us hydrate amongst other things. Nature has so much of our best health interest held in her hands – fibre, nutrients, minerals, vitamins, enzymes and life force. Summertime is probably the best time to enjoy high water content foods such as delicate lettuce leaves, cucumber, celery, strawberries, raspberries, rocket, tomatoes, watercress and more. Generally we do gravitate towards these foods in the summer anyway, although for some that means a slice of cucumber underneath the BBQ burger or you might count your dollop of tomato ketchup as your veg, but really you need to work a little harder than that folks to get real benefits and to brim with vitality and glow. A term you may have heard of is the acid and alkaline balance. This balance describes the Ph balance that the body needs to have and what we eat is the main contributor to this dynamic balance. Many people feel so much better in the summer which may be due to being outdoors and getting more fresh air and exercise, but it may also be due to the increase in the ‘alkaline’ foods namely veggies and fruits in our diet, eating them in their raw form and generally consuming more of them (just a note, lemons may be acidic to taste but they promote alkalinity in the body where it’s meant to be). In the main, apart from vegetables and fruits everything else is classed as acidic, however we do need some acidic foods for all round nutrition. That said, we eat too much of the acidic, mucous forming, heavy dense foods such as excess animal proteins and dairy, too much processed food, excess grains, sugar and the like. Add to that our toxic/chemical filled world with the increase in our stress levels all of which create an acidic environment – none of that is going to make us feel vibrant and well overall! Our body’s remarkably resilient and will work very hard to keep this delicate balance as it should but we need to support it by putting in the best foods we can. Whilst you may feel that your small side salad is enough you could consider more ways of increasing alkaline fruits and vegetables into your diet by – • Juicing – I know this has been my no.1 advice for 14 years but today with the amount of chemicals and toxicity we’re exposed to we need to add in more concentrated nutrients particularly as the soil is now so much more depleted. • Smoothies – if you prefer a smoothie then you can be more adventurous and get some greens in there too. • More raw veg – if you’re not keen to sit down to a large salad then why not chomp on a few carrots sticks, celery or cucumber whilst cooking. • Using veg as a base in place of some grains, i.e. cauliflower mash, cauliflower rice, courgette spaghetti and so on. There is no end to what you can do to make vegetables look and taste truly amazing, Mother Nature has provided us with the tools of her trade, it’s up to us to use them. There is nothing that replaces this power, even the best supplement in the world. It’s all about nature first, what we think we know about the power of plants to heal our body is far less than what we have yet to discover. In ‘balance’ and in health. Karen www.karendevine.co.uk Congratulations to Kyle and Gav, by the time you read this you will be the new Mr and Mrs Harrison, now to rush off and find a wedding outfit to wear, I have only three days to go!

coming 2014/15 season, as the disappointment from the last will only add to the Chairman’s determination to correct the wrong.
Over 18,000 Posh fans were London bound, destination Wembley to watch us beat Chesterfield 3-1 and lift the trophy for the first time in the club’s history, but not even this carrot was enough for the season to be deemed a success, such is the expectation of the fans, chairman and everyone connected with the club. Defeat to Leyton Orient in the play-off semi-final spelt disaster and no piece of silverware on the side was going to paper over the cracks. The Posh are known throughout the game as the entertainers, gone are the days of being happy to stabilise within a league, with the partnership of MacAnthony and Ferguson there will always be expectation, the pair demand it equally as much as the fans. Peterborough gymnast Louis Smith MBE is getting back in the saddle this month… for the Commonwealth Games. Sharon McAllister catches up with our local Olympian… ouis has rarely been off our TV screens and out of national magazines since the Olympics and winning Strictly Come Dancing. I’m wondering how difficult it’s been to switch back to being a sportsman from becoming quite the showbiz celeb.
L
press – but judging by the latest photos of him, he’s certainly achieved it!
“Haha I wouldn't go that far! The showbiz world is definitely different from the gym and I enjoy both. But I'm a sportsperson first and foremost and when I'm in the gym, my focus is purely on being the best gymnast I can be.”
After his double medal winning success at the 2012 Olympics and his increased profile afterwards, it wasn’t clear if he’d called it a day as far as the gym was concerned but since announcing he’d go for the Commonwealth Games and his subsequent qualification for the team Louis says his focus on sporting success is back 100%.
The showbiz scene has seen his profile raised considerably with our boy from Eye featuring in everything from modelling shoots and magazines to TV appearances and strutting the red carpet at premieres in one of his cool suits. All very different to long days sweating it out in the gym, so has he been enjoying this glamorous side of life or has he been longing to get back on the pommel horse? “I think when you compete at the top of any sport, you want to do it for as long as your body lets you. I needed the break from the sport but I'm happy to be back and mixing with the best in the world.”
“Gymnastics is hard, period. So to get back to the shape I was has taken a huge amount of effort and there's still more to go.”
“I'm as determined as I've ever been. As always my focus is on going there and doing my routine clean. The rest is out of my hands but I know I'm going there with a routine as good as any other in the world.” When asked who he sees as his biggest rival, Louis is full of praise for the homegrown talent nipping at his heels. “I'm really happy to say the biggest rivalry will come from the guys in this country. My teammate Max Whitlock and Dan

“Well straight after I'm done in Glasgow it's on to filming the new BBC show, Tumble, which I'm really excited to be a judge on. It's amazing for the sport to have the platform on a prime-time Saturday night TV show and I literally can't wait to be involved and judge as opposed to be judged!” Tumble will be hosted by The One Show’s Alex Jones, overseeing show-stopping performances based on gymnastic skills and performed by 10 celebrities. This new, live six-part television show kicks off soon with Louis joined by world-renowned

Of course a higher profile can also mean being in the limelight sometimes when you’d rather not be, but Louis seems to be keeping a handle on it. “It definitely changes the shape of things in that your private life is no longer as private as you'd maybe want it to be,” he acknowledges. “But that's something you just have to adjust to. Other than that, I just carry on being me and try to not let anything affect that.” You might think all this attention might turn his head from the gym but when asked if his love for the sport is still strong he doesn’t hesitate – “Yep and it always will be. It's been a part of my life since I was 4 years-old so that doesn't change.” After taking a break from the gruelling training schedule he’d been a part of for so many years Louis admits he’s had to adopt a “very” rigorous training programme to get back into shape after pics of him looking less toned started to appear in the

Signing his autobiography at Serpentine Green Keatings, who will be competing for Scotland, are both performing routines which are capable of pushing for gold.” And what’s he looking forward to about it the most? “Just being back amongst it. I thrive at top level competition and multisport events like the Commonwealths are such an amazing thing to be a part of.” There’s been lots of speculation about whether this would be his last big competition but he’s also raised Rio 2016 as a possibility in recent interviews and seems to be keeping an open mind as to whether this is it… “I thought the London Olympics was! So we'll see,” says Louis. “For now I'm just enjoying my gymnastics and we'll see where that takes me.” Despite refocusing on his sporting ambitions, he’s still keeping his TV career alive and told me he has another exciting project due to air in the next few weeks which he’s clearly chuffed with.

Memories of Ma yall Remembering a comedy genius The sudden death last month of Rik Mayall, one of the greatest comedy actors this country has ever produced prompted so many reminders of what made him so brilliant. Everyone reading will have their own favourite memory of something he said or did that still makes them laugh years later and that's because good comedy makes you laugh, but great comedy like the type he created stays with you forever. The Dangerous Brothers, The Young Ones, Kevin Turvey Investigates, Filthy Rich & Catflap, Blackadder, Bottom, The New Statesman or Drop Dead Fred. It's impossible to imagine how the comedy world would be without these things in it. The Young Ones in the 80's on BBC2 was the first glimpse people got outside of London clubs of alternative comedy and there being more to sitcoms than the conventional format delivered by shows like The Good Life or Last of the Summer Wine. The puerile and over-the-top slapstick that he and Ade Edmonson created in Bottom is still a joy to behold every time it's re-shown on TV and there isn't a Christmas that passes without me wanting to get a bottle of 'Grrr' aftershave. Meanwhile the live tours they did together as Richie & Eddie are the stuff of legend. Hunt them out on DVD if you've never seen their anarchic genius and
Drop Dead Fred is one of the forgotten film gems of the 90's. A cult classic and a role only Mayall could play. As well as leaving behind an incredible legacy of work for people to enjoy, there have also been countless comedians who’ve been inspired by him. For years while on the stand up circuit Greg Davies used to do a joke about how he looked like a fat Rik Mayall. It was a joke that came full circle last year when Davies wrote and starred in C4 sitcom Man Down and Mayall agreed to be Greg Davies 'Dad' with superb prank-playing one-upman-ship. Another memory that will endure from everything he was in is the way he said the word 'b*stard'. No one has ever made that particular word sound so funny as when it was spoken by Rik Mayall. I also doubt there's ever been a scene-stealing cameo in any comedy show quite as funny as that of the erotically charged charmer 'Lord Flashheart' in a few episodes of Blackadder. I'd like to think that rather than float up to heaven, he crashed through the pearly gates, grabbed hold of a blonde angel yelled “Woof! - Let's do-oo-oo it” before a puff of smoke and an explosion expelled him downwards. Goodbye Rik and thanks for all the memories, you utterly, utterly funny b*stard.
FUTURE COMEDY… The Cresset keeps lining up the big comedy names so get these dates down and book your tickets now… old school favourite Jim Davidson’s back on the circuit after winning Celebrity Big Brother and stops off here on October 12, TV’s Alan Davies appears on November 6 and Ross Noble brings his tour here on Novemebr 16. One of our favourites, Omid Djalili, film star and stand up, is already in the diary for January 29. Call 01733 265705 for tickets.

BAVARIAN BEERFEST @ THE NAGS HEAD
BLUEBELL @ HELPSTON IS BACK!
Fancy something a little different to your usual pint?
Welcome to Lesley Newitt who’s recently taken over the Bluebell in Helpston.
Head to the Nag’s Head in Bourne on August 16 for their Bavarian Beerfest. It’ll certainly be a high spirited and entertaining evening of foot stomping, thigh slapping and audience participation! They’ll have a live German Oompah Band (as featured on BBC Radio & Channel 4) playing a range of traditional and non-traditional music. You’ll receive a 1 litre stein of beer upon entry and there’ll be a Bavarian style buffet. Tickets (which are limited), are on sale now at £15 on 01778 393644, or simply purchase tickets from the bar in the Nags Head!
The pub’s been shut for a while and has undergone a refurbishment and opened up again on Saturday June 21. They tell us they have lots planned for the summer, and are also asking locals for their ideas and views so drop in and share your thoughts over a pint! It’s great to see a local pub back in business so show them your support folks.

SHAKEDOWN TO CASTOR FOR TOP BLUES ACTS! The latest in the Shakedown series of live blues jams takes place at the Castor village hall on Friday July 4. That’s American Independence Day and it’s rather appropriate therefore that promoter, Gerard Homan, brings Tennessee born blues singer Earl Thomas and his seven piece band The Royal Guard, to the area. They visit Castor as one of only five dates in the UK this year, having toured Europe and the USA extensively in 2013.
ARCONNA RETURN!
Earl’s parents and grandparents were musical and so he was raised with a wealth of music, blues, R&B, Gospel and soul. However, he was also sent to University where he trained classical voice. The late Frank Zappa signed Thomas to his first recording contract. The resultant debut album was entitled ‘Blue Not Blues’ and was released in April 1991. Since then Earl’s live performances show what a versatile performer he’s developed into with songs ranging from raw blues to funky soul with The
Royal Guard. If you want to sample the live performance of the band then go to the web on www.youtube.com/watch?v=micXyj5h9PE. In its earlier days Shakedown Blues was held mainly at the Halcyon in Netherton and brought us great talents from America like Champion Jack Dupree and Lighting Slim as well as British talent such as Ronnie Scott, Alexis Korner, Marc Almond and Chicken Shack. Nowadays its home is in Castor, but the aim is still the same. That’s to bring the Blues talent of the world to the Peterborough area. And long may it continue. Earl Thomas and The Royal Guard are at Castor Village Hall on July 4 and whilst you can pay on the door, you can book your tickets on www.shakedownblues.co.uk
Peterborough-based four-piece rock band Arconna aren’t just back with a bang. They’re back with a brand new EP full of them – plus intricate percussion, infectiously complex rhythm guitar and vocals ranging from lulling harmonies to belting crescendos – all on the four-track Dispositions EP. Dispositions was recorded at Regal House Studios by Deaf Havana’s producer Lee Batuik. It’s great to see them back and Luke from Arconna told ESP – “I can’t remember feeling as excited as when we heard the songs we’ve been crafting for the past few months come into life in the studio. Lee Batuik really understood what we were after in terms of sound and size. It’s been a long process, but so rewarding. “Now we’re gig-ready and want to get out there as much as possible. We’ve got strong songs that people really need to hear.” Arconna are no strangers to the progressive rock scene, having played with Biffy Clyro, My Code Name is Milo, Frank Turner’s Million Dead, Rueben, Oceansize and Queen Adreena to name a few. And upon unleashing their new sounds in spring, the band – comprising singersongwriter Luke Danks, guitarist Pete Unwin, drummer Chris Drewery, plus new bass player Greg Rawlinson – immediately had the first two releases from Dispositions chosen as tracks of the week on the BBC Introducing Show. Live debuts of the new tracks have pricked up ears of fans new and old, with a loud and proud near sell-out headline slot at the Met Lounge at the end of May and a well-received softer unplugged performance at Attica’s Open Mic Night in June. The resurgence shows no signs of stopping – a roster of new songs will join the Dispositions tracks at The North Street Bar on August 1.

WOOFSTOCK FESTIVAL IS HERE The sixth annual Woofstock Festival is taking place at The Angel Inn Yarwell on Saturday July 26 and Sunday July 27. Woofstock is the brainchild of the Angel’s owners, Nick and Diane Lander who’ve raised massive funds for the charity, The Retired Greyhounds Trust. Nick and Diane have given a home to five retired racing greyhounds as pets themselves, so are obviously passionate about the cause. Over the two days, local musicians and bands will be playing live in the pub’s beer garden, accompanied by a real ale and cider festival and BBQ. Although the complete list of bands awaits final confirmation, those already scheduled for the event include The Steradents, 101 Proof, Lexie Green, The Yarwell & Nassington Brass Band, The Helix, Lloyd Watson and The Rocket Dogs – plus open mic opportunities between 12.00 and 3pm each day. For more information please call Nick: 01780 782582. Always great fun and for a really good cause. If previous years are anything to go by, it’s worth a visit on either day. For more information log on to www.woofstock.co.uk
DON’T MISS OUT ON CHARITY CD Congratulations to all those involved with the live launch of the ‘Hearts in Harmony’ CD at North Street Bar back in May as covered previously here in ESP. As predicted, although it was a CD launch for the Peterborough based charity Little Miracles, 16 performers turned up and most did live performances on the night, which, I am reliably informed, ran very late! The organisers told ESP that they have, from the sales so far, covered all the costs expended to produce the original production batch of CD's and everything involved in the launch with a small surplus to go to Little Miracles. They’re now concentrating on selling the remaining CD's for which they are charging £5 including postage to any UK mainland postcode, and all the profits will go to Little Miracles. If you want a copy of the CD ‘Hearts in Harmony’ before the limited stock runs out then contact David on 07526 320336.

KING KOOL’S SCUZZ BOMBE ALBUM IS GREAT ROCK ‘N’ ROLL Anyone who’s seen Peterborough band King Kool in action will know that Dan Donovan (guitar) and Pas Struthers (drums) deliver hard driving rock ’n’ rollin’ at all their live performances and their albums never disappoint. July sees the release of the fourth album by the duo. It’s got a great title ‘Scuzz Bombe’ and as usual it’s hard to stop the head moving to the power of the tracks. The single ‘Talk About’ has received popular acclaim, and I particularly like ‘Skin Teeth’ which, to me, is what rock ’n’ roll is all about, heavy riffs with changes in pace that make it irresistible to get the Air Guitar out! The band recently played a launch gig at The Voodoo Lounge and another one in Belgium but keep an eye on the Gig Guide in the mag and online for all the latest on www.espmag.co.uk for their local appearances – they’re well worth checking out.
SUPERHOWL RELEASE NEW ALBUM A new album has recently been released by Superhowl who are a duo from Peterborough, and the album of the same name is the work of long time friends and musical collaborators Stuart Wallis and Barry Warburton. They formed the band in 2012 after working in other local groups, and the guys admit that they’re obsessed with buying musical gear and, “spend most of what is supposed to be our studio time gazing at equipment we don't know how to use and guitars we can’t really afford.” Nevertheless they’ve managed to build up a substantial guitar and equipment collection
between them and this shows on some of the tracks, because for a duo the production sound on the album achieves a pounding heavy beat. They’re also supported on a number of tracks by the powerful backing vocals and talented songwriting of Fyzz Wallis, (who they’re also working with to record her own debut album, ‘Room’, which is expected to be available very soon.) You can hear a compilation of the eleven tracks on the Superhowl album on Soundcloud.com. and you can download it on www.superhowl.com.
For more info about the band and the album go to www.kingkool.co.uk
FLASHBACK PHOTOGRAPH HIT THE PREMIER LEAGUE Congratulations also to Flashback Photograph, the acoustic duo from Peterborough, who are Gary Lee Ward (vocals, guitar, percussion) and Matt Worthington (bass, banjo, harmonica, percussion). They were recently invited to perform at the official Premier League sponsors’ end of season party at the Oxo Tower in London and it was for the top bods at the Premier League (including the man in the news, CEO Richard Scudamore) and to executives of the Premiers’ sponsors, including Barclays, Sky, BT and Nike. Matt told ESP – “We had a fantastic time playing at the Premier League's end of season sponsors party; the Oxo Tower was a stunning venue and we loved playing against the backdrop of the River Thames, Big Ben and Blackfriars Bridge. Gary and I are both footy fans so in a way it was nice to entertain the people behind the Premier League, because we get so much entertainment from that ourselves throughout the season.” You have a couple of opportunities to see for free, what the Premiership paid a lot of money for when Flashback Photograph play an acoustic 'live lounge' style set in Costa Coffee in Hampton on August 6 at 7.30pm. The photo is a rare image of the duo prior to the gig during which there was a strict no photography rule. Ironic really when you consider the band’s name!
THE SUBWAYS HEAD FOR THE BORO!
The Subways are back! They’ve announced their first full UK and Irish tour for two years. Tickets are sure to be in demand and particularly in this area because the band return to the scene of their first ever Peterborough show at The Met Lounge on Tuesday October 28. The band, renowned for their raucous live performances, are set for a 23 date tour of intimate venues to kick-start their return to the live stage. The new one-off summer single ‘My Heart is Pumping to a Brand New Beat’ has just been released via the band’s own label YFE Records. The new single is written, produced
and mixed by the band’s singer Billy Lunn who told ESP – “I wrote this track after I recently resolved a difficulty in my life as I was surrounded by the pulsing beats of my favourite songs and a throng of complete strangers crashing around the dance floor. Music has a wonderful power to heal wounds.” There’ll be more information in ESP as the gig gets nearer but if you want to see The Subways later this year go to www.thesubways.net for all ticketing details.
