WELCOME TO PIZZABOROUGH! Many moons ago Pizza and Pasta Magazine wrote a feature on pizza restaurant and delivery services in our city and suggested it be renamed ‘Pizzaborough’ due to the sheer number of pizza businesses operating from here.

These establishments baked delicious Neapolitan pizza (before health and safety requirements restricted the use of wood-fire / log ovens) and it seems The Pizza Parlour could be set for a return subject to planning being granted.

The article was published back in the early 1990s and at the time you could get pizza in approximately 20 businesses. That figure has probably more than doubled since then and our love for pizza shows no signs of waning.

If the application is given a green light, we could see the former Tanning Shop on Cowgate – just two doors away from The Pizza House and up the road from Topo Gigio’s – become The Pizza Parlour.

Pizza delivery was born in Peterborough. In 1983 Papa Luigi began to deliver pizzas to doorsteps and in doing so became the country’s first pizza restaurant to transport piping hot pizza to our homes and businesses. America’s Dominos arrived a year later. Before then, in the late 1970s, the city’s first pizzeria was established. The Pizza House is still going strong from its original location on Cowgate. Both businesses have their roots in Italian ownership and it’s because of this we’re still able to enjoy quality pizzas made with passion, authenticity and tradition. Over the years I can remember other Italian-run pizzerias and restaurants serving pizza like Topo Gigio, Da Mario and The Pizza Parlour.

Pete Fierro, founder of city estate agent City & County, is the man behind the vision to bring another pizza place to Cowgate, which by then will be renamed ‘Pizzagate’ by Pizza and Pasta Magazine. Pete wants (pun coming up) a pizza the action and who can blame him. We adore pizza in Peterborough and more of the proper stuff instead of the tasteless rubber served up by the chains is what we need. Of course, this view isn’t one necessarily shared by owners of The Pizza House and Topo Gigio but as American singer Willie Nelson once said: “The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.” With the worm and cheese already catered for, maybe The Pizza Parlour will get the mozzarella…

REUNITED IN REUNIONS THIS AUTUMN

His first book New England takes pride of place on my bookshelf and street photographer Chris Porsz is putting the finishing touches to his second collection of Peterborough images from back in the day with Reunions. The book is out later this year and Chris has been inundated with social media responses to his photos, as he bids to recreate images he captured during the 1970s and 1980s. I’m one of Chris’s biggest fans and was only too pleased to help reunite him with one of his subjects Vito Todisco. I’ve known Vito for more than 30 years (his son Ando who sadly passed away was one of my closest friends) and instantly recognised him in one of Chris’s photos taken in the 1980s. He’s pictured chatting with another man I knew well, Sebastiano Gaeta of Orchard Street in Woodston. Sebastiano was good friends with my granddad, he was a lovely man and I remember the sadness I felt when he passed away.

ABAX LADS IN 180-MILE CYCLE SUCCESS FOR FREE KICKS Cycling is something I’ve been threatening to get into for a while now and I think I’ve just found my inspiration. ABAX employees Asif Rashid, Matt Walsh and Guy Sharpe helped to raise approximately £3,500 with the company’s UK chief executive and ABAX’s Dutch chief executive when they pedalled from Peterborough to Amsterdam in just two days.

The 180-mile ride set off from Posh’s ABAX Stadium and finished at AFC Ajax’s football ground. The quartet joined 22 others in raising money for The Free Kicks Foundation, a charity that provides days out as football team mascots for ill, bereaved and disadvantaged children. None of them owned a bike before they agreed to take part, which is why they can be doubly proud of helping to exceed the £10k mark with the rest of the group.

Vito, now 90 years-old, is probably the oldest person to feature in Chris’s Reunions book but he’s still on the hunt for several more people to try and reunite. One example is the man and woman (likely to be Italian) pictured on Taverners Road. If anyone from the Italian community recognises them, Chris would love to hear from you. Chris told me: “When I took the photograph of Vito and Sebastiano on Bridge Street over 30 years ago I couldn’t have imagined that you’d help me recreate it! Sadly, Sebastiano, who worked at Christian Salvesen died a few years ago. But I was amazed and delighted when you said Vito, now 90, still rides his bike every day and was happy to be re-photographed. He was a bit wobbly to start with but fortunately I didn’t have to step into paramedic mode! Chris has published dozens of photos that he’d like to put names to on his Facebook page and you can also view them at www.chrisporsz.com

BUMBLE EVERYONE INN We’ve obviously got our priorities right. When it was a pharmacy l barely saw more than one person in there at any one time. Now a micropub it was standing room only at 6pm on a Friday evening. I was immediately impressed with the Bumble Inn, simply because it’s not out to impress. If you want a nononsense beer without the music, TV or any other unnecessary distractions then the Bumble is the place for you. It does what it says on the tin. Landlord Tom Beran (of the Coalheavers Arms in Woodston) runs it with wife Michelle. They were very welcoming as all good landlords should be and talked me into half a pint of ‘A World Without Dave’, which was stout with a hint of mint chocolate. I sat next to regular customer Andy (pictured with me) who was on his second pint of Czech larger Liska. If beer doesn’t pull your pilsner then there’s a range of wines, spirits, soft drinks and hot drinks available too. The Bumble Inn is open every day from 12 noon. Check it out.

The new trampoline park in Wedgwood Way consists of a main arena with wall-to-wall interconnected trampolines, as well as a dodgeball court, a worldstandard foam pit, slam dunk hoops, a gladiator pit, fitness challenge zone, Louis, the Bounce mascot and owner Gary Knill gymnastics runways, and specialist softplay zone for children 2 to 5 yearsold. Bounce has created the revolutionary Reboot Fitness programme, a bootcamp style exercise class incorporating drills only possible on trampolines.

Who better to officially open the new Bounce Indoor Trampoline Park in Bretton than Olympic gymnast Louis Smith? The Olympian and TV star from Peterborough did the honours and put the kit to the test trying out everything from the trampolines to the obstacles and even doing battle in the gladiator pit as dozens of kids gathered for selfies with our local hero. Louis told ESP that as a hyperactive child he would’ve loved something like Bounce, “This is definitely right up my street – obviously when I was younger I was literally bouncing off the walls. My mum took me to every kind of after school club and different thing and this is exactly the sort of thing that would’ve challenged my mind, kept me focused while having tons of fun at the same time. It’s exactly the type of thing I’d love – the type of thing I still love! “There’s been a real buzz around this Bounce so I think it’s incredible, it’s exactly what we needed. The last time I ever saw anything like this was Activity World and Big Sky – this is new, it’s fresh and vibrant, it’s incredible.”

For the kids though, Louis believes it’s a great way to foster their interest in sport and fitness – “Even for kids that do gymnastics and then realise it’s not quite what they want to do full time they can come here at weekends and still carry on what they love about the sport without taking it as seriously. It’s brilliant. “If sport is something you’ve never really done then as you start to get older it almost becomes more important and if it’s alien to you it’s that much harder to do. If you’ve been an active kid I think you’re going to find it easier to keep that active balanced lifestyle as you get older.”

Louis and Kev from Heart

Everyone was certainly enjoying it at the opening and it looks the ideal place to wear the kids out or even to hold a kids’ party but adults can also enjoy it. It looks great for team building, fitness or even a hen do! Now it’s fingers crossed that Louis makes it through to the Rio Olympics so we’ll keep you posted! CAN THE ZOMBIES SAVE THA HOOD? Get ready for a Zombie takeover at the Key Theatre in Peterborough on Monday July 4 and Tuesday July 5 as the new Peterborough based film Zombies in Tha Hood takes to the screen. A British indie comedy directed by Leon Mitchell, written by Ross Strowthers and shot in the city of Peterborough, Zombies in Tha Hood tells the tale of a nasty government plan to rid society of benefit scroungers and those nuisance ghetto kids but bad luck for them as their cunning plan doesn’t quite work out. Expect a mad, mad, mad scientist, lots of positivity in the form of beats, irony and plenty of jokes from this cool British production showcasing raw and local talent. ESP’s Anna Ruggiero caught up with the film’s director Leon Mitchell to find out more. How did you fund the film? “In total the film and project cost around £50,000 and was independently funded with some

sponsorship from UCA (Uniting Creative Arts) and a donation from Henley Festival.” Do you think this will pave the way for other projects of this nature? “I really hope so! There are a lot of talented people in the city and a lot of scope for filming so I’d encourage all up and coming film makers to get out there and create something. “I think it means a lot to Peterborough as it’s the first time a feature film has been shot entirely in the city using a large amount of local cast and talent.” Just how much effort goes into producing a film like this? Will there be a sequel? “The idea of a sequel is fun and very appealing and

we learnt so much about making a comedy through this process, so if we did one, I feel we could actually make it even better. Although this year we are starting a new film, it’ll be a much more complex narrative based around social breakdown and survival. As an author and film maker my passion lies within a more dynamic storyline. “The effort that goes into a film is just incredible and sometimes overwhelming which is often down to financial pressures and limitations. On low budgets you have to constantly compromise and have a team and cast who are committed to the end.” Tell me about Louis Smith’s cameo appearance. “Louis is a good friend of the film writer (Ross Strowthers) and he agreed to do a cameo and play a small part. This was great for the film as it’s bringing together success from the city and helps open up new opportunities for others.” We can check the film out at the Key Theatre in Peterborough and where after that? “The Key Theatre premiere is more for the city and the cast/crew. Following on from that, it will go out to the film festivals and be entered into the BAFTAS. We can’t do a full release until that process has happened. Once it has we will then do a release edit for the film and send it out for general release and the likes of Netflix and iTunes.” Read our full feature on www.espmag.co.uk. It appears that summer has finally landed, well at the time of me writing this column at least, and what better way to enjoy the summer months than with some seriously scrumptious ice cream and desserts! So here’s my round up of tasty places to visit this summer…

Creations Dessert Lounge on Burghley Road in Peterborough is the new sweet place to be this summer where you can enjoy a delicious range of waffles, crepes, cookie dough, shakes, cakes, gelato and more! I caught up with Zaid Mahmood, the owner of Creations who told me: “The inspiration behind Creations is my sweet tooth and my love for food! I would often travel miles from Peterborough to enjoy an evening dining with friends, which would always end up with dessert. “In more recent years, I started noticing a trend in the larger cities where people would go out just for dessert. After some months of travelling all over the country, me and my brothers decided that Peterborough needed its very own dessert lounge and it was time for me to give back to the city where I have spent most of my childhood and professional career. This was the beginning of a very challenging, eventful, rewarding and fulfilling journey.” Like Creations on Facebook and keep up to date with offers.

Kaspas are a chain of family orientated dessert parlours which are now planning to come to Peterborough city centre. They told me that they can’t wait to serve up their desserts in a great place with superb people and be part of the Peterborough community, and aim to be the place where friends and families can come and enjoy time together over great desserts. Waffles, crepes, sundaes, smoothies, milkshakes, cakes and cookie dough are just some of the amazing desserts they’ll be bringing to Peterborough. All their products are no GM, suitable for vegetarians, handmade and imported from the heart of Italy, with no artificial preservatives. Well that all sounds rather delicious to me. I’ll keep you posted on when they’re due to open and I’ll probably see you there!

CREATIONS DESSERT LOUNGE

KASPAS IS COMING TO PETERBOROUGH

TOBY’S DESSERTS ARE HOT TOO! We all know they’re famous for cooking a cracking roast dinner, but the Toby Carvery in Hampton launched a new pudding menu this summer. It well and truly caters for those with a sweet

tooth with an amazing range of puddings, sundaes, sweets and specials. You can enjoy them after a roast (if you have room!) or just pop in and indulge in a dessert whenever you like.

CHAI - THE COMMUNITY CAFÉ

So whether you fancy a Munchies Sundae with milk chocolate, soft caramel, biscuit, dairy ice cream, toffee fudge, Belgian chocolate sauce and a crisp wafer – yes that pudding really does exist – or prefer a more traditional dessert there’s something for everyone. Go wild and indulge in a Toby Summer Special, diving into a magnificent strawberry sundae with all the extras!

Chai on Eastfield Road is the place to be for all things quirky, community, cool and most of all tasty so head to Chai, a family run coffee shop and ice cream parlour, to enjoy some seriously good sweet things!

CREAMS COMING SOON Hopefully coming soon will be another dessert venue to add to the sudden rise in all too tempting eateries in the city. Creams is just awaiting approval and if it’s given the go ahead by the city council, we’re likely to see it throw open its doors in the former North Street Bar building around August time. We’ll keep you posted!

TASTY TAMU The recently opened TAMU in the city centre, has gone down a treat so make sure you make a date with a mate and head there for some seriously naughty sweet things. You can enjoy freshly made crepes and waffles, exotic fruit smoothies, creamy milkshakes, soothing hot desserts, a selection of sinful cakes and cheesecakes, classic sundaes, tempting frozen yoghurt and award winning gelato ice cream!

THE PUDDING PALACE NOW OPEN! The very latest new tasty addition to Queensgate Shopping Centre is The Pudding Palace (next to Handmade Burger Co) which has just been opened by popstar Kavana in the Westgate Arcade. It’s full of gorgeous cakes, wedding cakes, choccies, smoothies and much more!

SALAMIS IS A GREEK LOVE AFFAIR IN PETERBOROUGH

G R E E K R E S TA U R A N T

doing when it comes to great food and good service.

It’s was a real pleasure to dine at the traditional Greek Salamis restaurant in Peterborough and enjoy a tasty Greek meal. Now run by Milaim Zenelaj, the restaurant has kept its original charm and quality of food – the previous owner is now the head chef!

I had the Salamis Speciality a meze which is priced at £19.50 per person and is based mainly on the Greek part of the menu and includes different fish, meat and vegetable dishes for you to share with your dining companion. You can enjoy traditional Greek dishes such as mousakka, kebabs and kleftiko (a big piece of lamb on the bone cooked in the oven it its own juices with spices and herbs).

Everything that you eat at Salamis is fresh, good quality food that is sourced locally where possible including the local butchers and the local market for their fruit and vegetables dishes. You really do feel like you’ve been transported to the beautiful Greece as you’re welcomed warmly and the waiter was extremely attentive as the service was second to none. Salamis has actually been in Peterborough for 28 years now so they obviously know what they’re

SURVIVAL

GUIDE Festivals are a once-in-a-lifetime event, where you get to experience seeing your favourite artists, just metres in front of you. But you need to plan ahead if you’re not going to look like a festival novice.

O

k, so first things first, you must be prepared for any outcome. Our weather can go from sunshine to torrential rain in seconds. So make sure you pack for whatever the weather, this includes raincoats as well as shorts. You may even need an umbrella or two! Chances are the ground’s going to be muddy so remember to take trainers or shoes that you don’t mind getting filthy or even wellies. On the other hand, if it’s a scorcher you will need sun cream (don’t forget all your other toiletries) and make sure you keep hydrated. You’re more than likely going to be drinking, but keeping hydrated with non-alcoholic drinks is extremely important, especially if it is hot and you’re raving. We also recommend taking a backpack and bumbag. A portable phone charger is handy. And make sure you fully charge your phone before leaving. Obviously if you’re going for the whole weekend and camping, you’ll take tents, sleeping bags, a torch (the wind-up ones are good) and other camping essentials. Buying a cheap tent will be sufficient and will save any heartbreak when it inevitably gets ruined. And make sure to get a good sleep the night before – you’re gonna need it! It is important you arrive early so you can get a good spot for your tent. Arriving early also means you don’t miss the best bits of the festival.

If you’re short of cash, take enough food and drink for your stay. Obviously there’ll be lots of places that sell food and drink, but it can be very expensive. Do take photos – you’ll want to remember your experience with more than just memories, but think before posting them on social media. If you’ve told work that you’re ill (not that we recommend telling porkies to your employers) your bosses will not be amused when they see you on Facebook or Instagram giving it large. In fact, don’t post anything on social media you wouldn’t want your mum and dad seeing! Leave your valuables at home. Just imagine getting home after a long weekend of parties and live music, just to find that you have damaged, lost or had stolen your most expensive jewellery or that you’re favourite clothes are completely trashed and ruined. Finally don’t say ‘yes’ if you don’t know what you’re saying ‘yes’ to (aka drugs). Although it may seem like a fun idea at the time, there could be some serious consequences. You have no idea what these strangers are really selling to you, don’t take the risk. Oh and don’t be the fool who thinks stage diving is cool – it’s never going to work. Have fun and stay safe. Guide compiled by festival goers Beth Nottage, Megan Stone, Lauren Killingworth and Nathan Caine.

ESP’s Darren Grigas says make this the year you get off the couch and give Peterborough’s half marathon a go… because you CAN do it!

Joining a Parkrun is a great way to get started

It’s not long now until Peterborough’s flagship running event the Perkins Great Eastern Run half marathon. On Sunday October 9 thousands of people will be flowing through the city, chasing times, raising money and achieving their own personal goals. This fantastic event has been going for years now and it’s always great to see people from all walks of life, ages, shapes and sizes setting out to cross that finish line and make themselves and their loved ones proud. I’m always inspired by every runner on a course chasing a goal, whether they’re the fastest or the

slowest doesn’t matter, they’re still out there doing it for their own reasons and I love that.

For anyone who likes the idea of a half-marathon but has never got around to it I’d suggest just biting the bullet and getting involved. Put an end to the hindsight of ‘shoulda woulda coulda’ and just crack on, make this the year. If you think you don’t ‘have’ time then ‘make’ time, if you think it’s out of your league well you’ve got a few months left to get ready. If you can already run 1-2 miles or a Parkrun (5km at Ferry Meadows and Rutland Water every Saturday at 9am) then there are plenty of free 10-12 week training plans online which you could use to take you to halfmarathon level. And hey, if you’re an absolute beginner and still don’t feel ready by October well you’ll still be a whole lot fitter by then so it certainly won’t be time wasted. A quote I like says; “You don’t have to be great to start but you have to start to be great” and in my opinion being great doesn’t have to mean being the fastest or the best, being great is relative to you and your own personal goals, being a better you, making yourself and others proud. If your best is an hour slower than an elite athlete then so what? It’s YOUR best and YOUR goal nailed, so bloody good for you, wear that medal with pride!

For even more purpose and motivation you could raise money for charity and be spurred on knowing your efforts and the support of others are making a life changing difference to others. This year the PGER’s official charity is the Jane Tomlinson Appeal and for the fun run it’s Anna’s Hope, making a difference to children battling cancer, they’d all welcome support but if there are other causes close to your heart then I’m sure they’d love to have you running for them. It adds such purpose to your efforts and can really help push you on and feel focused during training and the event itself.

FREE Training sessions From July 13 on every other Wednesday evening there are free training sessions for runners of all abilities down at the Peterborough Embankment Athletics Track, it’s run by experienced runners and coaches and is well worth a visit. I went last year and got some great benefit from it as did my children and everyone there from elite to beginner. Definitely recommended! www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk/fre e-training-sessions

Audi has the tablet to cure your car buying headache… It can feel a bumpy ride buying a car but Peterborough Audi, as part of the Vindis Group, has innovated in both technology and customer service to ease your car buying journey. The result has seen a dramatic rise in the centre’s latest customer satisfaction survey rankings. General Sales Manager, David Gough says; “We’ve aimed to bring every element of the customer experience in line with their expectations from start to finish and I’m pleased to say we really are premium in every way, but we’re constantly reviewing everything to ensure it is the best it can be. We’re now in the top 20 in the network and over 47% of customers return and buy from us again.”

iPads and Apple TV to help you choose the exact new or used offer that’s right for you. “We can manage the whole interaction live and give a much more streamlined response” says David. “We no longer have to leave customers hanging about while we go behind the scenes to look up information or fill in paperwork.”

“We’re now in the top 20 in the network and over 47% of customers return and buy from us again.” Vindis Group has made buying a car from all dealerships a premium experience in every way and tweaked everything from the bottom up, especially in the development of an application to enhance customer experience. Buying a car’s a big purchase and a big decision. These days of course many of us wisely do our research online first but Vindis Group sales teams are also making use of

Anyone from the sales team can now look up all you need to know; from configuring your car to checking offers, and this can be done anywhere from the showroom to one of Peterborough Audi’s private consultation rooms. It’s quicker, easier and there’s no hanging about while sales executives leave you to look things up behind closed doors. Ultimately, as much as you’ve looked online, the time will come when you need that first hand experience of seeing and experiencing the car you have your eye on. Pop into Peterborough Audi’s showroom and you’ll get the full meet and greet treatment from front of house manager, Charles Strange, who’ll soon delight you with one of his delicious coffees and introduce you to the best person to help.

Thanks to the internet we can all know just about as much as a sales executive can so it’s less about being in the know and now more about the overall experience. The staff can discuss your needs, arrange a test drive and help you understand all the technical features of your chosen model, then let you go away to make an informed decision. The Peterborough Audi team is now much larger and the 12 sales staff have all come from customer focussed backgrounds rather than purely car sales, plus both Vindis Group and Audi invest heavily in training. There are three contact centre executives available to deal with your enquiries on the telephone so there’s no hanging on to get put through to a department to help, they can deal with most enquiries. Everyone has busy lives and weekends are precious, and for most of us that’s prime shopping time, but most dealerships tend to shut on a Sunday. A revised rota at Peterborough Audi means there’s always full cover on a Sunday so you have plenty of time to make a considered decision. Once you do purchase an Audi the after sales experience is equally important and David meets every customer to hand over their new car to make sure they drive away happy and satisfied with the service they’ve received. You’re going to be hearing a lot about Izzy Bizu. This 22 year-old who’s been rocking the festivals, has toured with Sam Smith and is the voice behind the theme to the BBC’s Euros coverage (a modern version of Edith Piaf's classic French song La Foule) and is now about to release her debut album. She’s been getting support since 2013 from the likes of 1Xtra and BBC Radio 1 and this year was a BRITs Critics Choice finalist and has just played her biggest headline show to date at London’s Koko as part of a European tour. Izzy’s first official single Adam & Eve is out now and her highly anticipated debut album A Moment of Madness is released on July 22. She recently partnered up with HONNE to release the track Someone That Loves You, a simmering cut of electro-soul. Izzy and HONNE first met over Twitter (where else?) and soon set to work on a track – “It’s a song all about how we want what we can't have and how the grass is always greener."

Being voted the ‘#1 Freshest Faces for 2016’ by the Evening Standard, and tipped as ‘One To Watch’ in the Guardian, Independent, The Times, Daily Mail, The Sun, Grazia, and Noisey, the South London born singer and songwriter is quickly proving herself as one of the most exciting breakthrough British artists of 2016. Born to an Ethiopian mother and English father, Izzy’s rich cultural tapestry has informed her soulful indie soundscape. Izzy says, “When I supported Sam Smith – the vocals, his heartbreak, his soul, the energy, it was so inspiring. Being able to get on stage and lay yourself out so openly, ultimately that’s what I’m ready for.” With several festival appearances already under her belt, including Glastonbury, this month will see Izzy on stage at Lovebox and Longitude Festival with Bestival rounding things off in September. One of the highlights on her forthcoming album is the track White Tiger. “That was my risk-

taking track,” says Izzy. “I wrote it ages ago, I had a lot of trust issues, was sceptical, anxious… My ex-boyfriend was the white tiger who made me trust again. New relationships are like a rollercoaster; scary but fun.” The track Floating Lamps was written last year while chilling in her mother’s native Ethiopia. “I went there a lot when I was younger so I’m really familiar with the culture; it’s changed so much over the years. It’s a lot better than it used to be. Everyone thinks it’s poverty land but it’s so much more. It is truly amazing.” Another track, Skinny, an ode to the type of guy she goes for (skinny), is as sexy as it gets, “When I go out I’m larger than life, I let myself go, I feel free and I don’t care who’s watching. I’m not even a good dancer but just letting go feels really good. I wanted to capture that in a track.” Catch her latest videos on YouTube and find out more on www.izzybizu.com.

Voice cast: Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks, Hayden Rolence, Idris Elba Directors: Andrew Stanton & Angus MacLane After smashing the opening weekend cume for an animated movie in the States – amassing $135m to beat Shrek the Third’s accomplishment and topping Disney/Pixar’s record set by Toy Story 3 – this looks like it could drown the competition through the competitive month of July. With the help of her clownfish friends Nemo (Hayden Rolence) and Marlin (Albert Brooks), they all embark on an epic journey across the oceans to try and find her Mum and Dad.

And with sensational reviews Stateside that tags it as ‘funny, poignant and thought-provoking’ it looks like this sequel is going to add an entertaining chapter to Finding Nemo’s much-loved story – and provide another massive hit for Disney/Pixar in the process.

THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS: THE MOVIE

CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE

The makers of Despicable Me provide us with this colourful comedy animation about the lives our pets lead when we leave for work each day. In one bustling Manhattan building, pets of every creed and colour trade humiliating stories about their owners – but quick-witted terrier Max finds his pampered life rocked when sloppy and classless mongrel Duke enters his domain.

Patsy (Joanna Lumley) and Edina (Jennifer Saunders) star in their own feature length movie – as the cult British comedy series (which started in 1992) gets the big-screen treatment. The duo hatch a plan to permanently live the high life in the French Riviera, fleeing the country after being blamed for the disappearance of supermodel Kate Moss at a fashion launch party.

Mild-mannered accountant Calvin Joyner (Ride Along’s Kevin Hart) is lured into the world of international espionage after reuniting with an old pal, Dwayne Johnson’s Bob Stone, through Facebook. Oscar nominee Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone), Jason Bateman (Horrible Bosses) and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul co-star in this buddy action comedy from the director of We’re The Millers.

Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine co-star in this sequel.

ICE AGE: COLLISION COURSE

STAR TREK: BEYOND

THE BFG

More than 30 years after the cult supernatural comedy classic took the world by storm, Bridesmaids director Paul Feig has rebooted it with female leads – including Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy – to internet vitriol from hardcore fans. So for that reason let’s hope these talented ladies do the franchise justice – with Chris ‘Thor’ Hemsworth also along for the ride.

Scrat’s epic pursuit of his elusive acorn catapults him outside of Earth’s atmosphere – where he inadvertently sets off a series of cosmic events that threaten the planet. To save themselves from peril, Manny, Sid, Diego and co leave their homestead and embark on a quest full of thrills and spills that fans will have become accustomed to from the previous four animated instalments.

The recent accidental death of young Chekov star Anton Yelchin (R.I.P.) will undoubtedly overshadow the film’s release, as Fast Five director Justin Lin takes over the sci-fi reigns. As the USS Enterprise crew – led by Chris Pine’s Kirk – explore the furthest reaches of space, they encounter a mysterious new enemy – Idris Elba’s Krall – who pushes the Federation to the limits.

Steven Spielberg re-teams with his Bridge of Spies Oscar-winning star Mark Rylance as Roald Dahl’s classic tale is turned into a blockbuster spectacle. Tenyear-old Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) has the adventure of her lifetime when she befriends a 24-foot behemoth (Rylance) who proves to be gentle and charming – and together they team-up to rid the lands of the bad giants once and for all.

MIRROR’S EDGE: CATALYST (X1/PS4/PC)

This sequel to the cult breakout hit freerunning game stumbles a couple of times – but generally stays on its feet to provide a visually engaging first-person adventure. You play as Faith, a brave ‘runner’ who uncovers dark secrets behind the beautiful #### façade of the city of Glass, and throughout the expanse of this open world – from pristine skyscrapers to gloomy tunnels – you must master combat through the sometimes stunning parkour-inspired environments. Some minor glitches, graphical texturing problems and a sometimes underwhelming story do undo some of the good work, but this follow-up – despite maybe not quite hitting the heights that some were expecting – proves to be a noteworthy catalyst for potentially greater things to come.

OVERWATCH (PS4/X1/PC)

This team-based multiplayer shooter has virtually come from nowhere to raise the bar in sub-genre – as this oozes ingenuity from every pore. This slick and charmingly crafted world (which pays homage to the likes of Team Fortress 2) ##### pits a unique international task force of heroes – each with differing abilities and weaponry – who must band together to restore peace across this war-torn arena, and by combining forces with teammates exciting rewards are unlocked. Some may argue that the lack of modes doesn’t warrant a full retail price, but if you put in the time the tactical depth shines through with every intense multiplayer showdown – which makes this just about the best at what it does.

This remastered version – which nicely improves the graphics but still suffers with framerate issues – probably doesn’t do enough to entice back anyone but the most hardcore of Dead Island enthusiasts, as the structural issues of the main games a few years on become hard to ignore, despite the undisputed open-world fun that still ensues. Alongside the original game and the semi-sequel Riptide there’s also a fun 16bit game thrown in called Retro Revenge set within the same universe – as this 40 hours plus package gives you plenty of blood splatter for your buck.

For the second of the Key Theatre’s Edinburgh previews, they welcome this great Edinburgh Comedy Award winner and a TV and radio regular. Box office: 01733 207239.

16 TAPE FACE IS COMING!

Comedy act Tape Face is currently wowing audiences across the pond in this year’s America’s Got Talent and we’ll soon get the chance to see his unique brand of silent comedy for ourselves, here at the Key Studio in Peterborough, so don’t miss out! Tickets are £17 (£15 concessions) on 01733 207239.

It didn't take long for him to find out. Stepping out in front of the 2,000 strong audience he looked around the venue and jokingly christened it "the shed of despair" commenting that it looked like the kind of place people were taken to after a natural disaster and given blankets and soup! Another highlight was a routine in the first half about the expression, ‘Not too bad’. It's one we've all used when someone asks us how we are, and the sentence is often accompanied by ‘all things considered’. Nearly two hours later as Bill is shrugging his shoulders unsure how exactly to leave the stage he says, "Well this has been an experience if nothing else," and a lone voice in the audience to his left yells "Not too bad...” followed up by someone in the middle section who shouts back "All things considered." It was either a witty moment of spontaneity or a carefully planned heckle from a couple of fans who've seen the show before. Either way, it's a perfect illustration of the response a man who looks like ‘Princess Leia's wizard uncle’ (his words) can elicit from a crowd. There's lots more great live comedy coming our way over the next few months, and with any luck Bill will be back on his next live tour.

ADIE OF THE ROVERS

If you're a football fan and haven't been watching Sky One's new sitcom ‘Rovers’ then it's well worth a watch. Its main stars are Craig Cash and Sue Johnston (from The Royle Family) but is set in the clubhouse of a down on their luck non-league footy team. Local football fans in Peterborough may recognise the voice of the local sports phone in presenter as he's played by local guy, life-long Posh fan and TalkSport presenter Adrian Durham. His character is called Owen Niblock who the writers of the show named after a jobbing comedian they're friends with and who coincidentally performed many years ago at a comedy night at Ebeneezers I was at, anyway Adie is in episodes 1 & 4 and told us... "Working with someone like Craig Cash was a no brainer, he's a funny guy, very talented and a big listener to my radio shows. Rovers is a great comedy and it's an honour to be part of it. I'm just hoping they ask me back for the second series!" For details log onto www.sky.com/watch/channel/sky-1/rovers

DRIVING UP STANDARDS

FESTIVALS OF FOUR WHEELS ( We’re well into festival season and this means festivals of music, food, dance and all sorts of other excuses for a good time. Thankfully there’s a festival or two coming up for yours truly and other likeminded petrol heads to get excited about. The car and motorbike show season is well underway and there are still some gems well worth a visit. Here’s a rundown of some of the best days out for lovers of anything motoring…

SUNDAY

Classic Retro Car & Bike Show:This is held in the grounds of Elton Hall and features live music as well as lots of stalls selling everything from retro fashions to spare car parts. Expect to see custom bikes and cars as well as classic Americana. For tickets visit www.activeshows.co.uk

SUNDAY

JULY 3

Festival of Aston Martins: Admission to this event at Burghley House is free, which is a bit of a result considering the calibre of cars on show. You’ll be able to get up close and personal with some of the most beautiful Astons ever built and wonder when your numbers will come up on a Saturday evening, so that you can afford one. For more information, email edwind.cunningham@btinternet.com

JULY 3

JULY 3

You’ll see an enormous variety of vehicles from vintage and classics all mingling with the latest models at this popular show – and anyone with a V6, flat six or a straight six engine will take pride of place in a special display area. As well as the cars and bikes, you can enjoy live bands, a good range of food, a picnic area and a full bar with real ales. There’s plenty to keep kids of all ages entertained too, from climbing walls to fairground rides and the ever popular ‘Crayon Car’. Best of all, this year organisers are running a show programme raffle where one lucky winner plus three friends will have the chance to visit the Bloodhound project facility in Avonmouth, Bristol. Here they’ll be able to find out all about a UK-led, global project to build a supersonic car that will not only beat the current land speed world record but also smash the 1,000mph barrier! The ULTIMATE Combat Gaming Experience

In 2015 more than 3,000 visitors came from all over the region and further afield. This time even larger crowds are expected, as Vivacity’s arts festival is taking place at the Key Theatre the same weekend.

Airsoft is a military simulation game similar to paintball. It costs a lot less to play, it hurts less and uses realistic looking replica weapons.

The show will feature classic and vintage cars, motorcycles, scooters, commercial vehicles, agricultural vehicles, buses and military vehicles. There’s plenty to keep the family occupied including children’s rides, retail stalls, hot food and other entertainment. Proceeds from the sale of the show’s programme will be split between charities Magpas Air Ambulance and Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. Fiona Castle, the wife of former Record Breakers presenter Roy Castle, will be officially opening the event on Saturday. To register your vehicle, go to www.peterborough.gov.uk/classicvehicle

2. Trace the upper lash line with a soft black pencil, then gently smudge with your fingertip.

Biolage SunSorialS We all know that feeling when you come back from your summer hols and your hair has ‘been through the mill a bit…’ Well, I tried the Biolage Sunsorials after-sun shampoo and sun repair treatment together (there’s a mega cute free gift bag as well!) during the few sunny days we had last month. I also took a long dip in the local pool for good measure. So I can confirm these products do help repair sun damaged, chlorine exposed hair. After using these easy products, my hair was so soft it brushed through with ease. The secret is they contain sunflower seed extracts which are full of vitamins A, C, D and E. I’d definitely recommend these as a must have in your holiday suitcase. Ask your hairdresser or local beauty spa for more details.

3. With a smaller, firm-bristle brush, press a gunmetal shade into the lower lash line. 4. Apply a pale silver powder to the inner corners of the eyes to lighten the overall effect. 5. Pile on the mascara!

BABY TALK… A few fellow beauty geeks out there might have read about a new trend started by former Miss Asia, Tanya Mann. She says baby products are crucial to her beauty regime! So this month I’m going to get a few of my friends with little ones at home to try out some of her suggestions. Read next month’s column to see how we get on!

BEING

IT’S TIME TO ‘GREEN UP’! HERE’S HOW TO LEARN TO LOVE YOUR GREENS… 2. Kale is the popular green of the last few years, (personally not my favourite), it’s good to have a little but quit going overboard with it, it’s highly concentrated and can make you feel nauseous if taken in high doses. You can add a few leaves to a salad and make it easier to eat by massaging it with avocado and a little sea salt first, or you can dry it out in the oven or dehydrator, pop into a blender and blend dry until it’s like a powder, pop into a tight jar or container with a lid, then sprinkle over a salad or other food.

W

e all know that we should eat our greens but we rarely think about the benefits of why. Our edible green plants transfer so much goodness from the plant into our body whilst being so versatile in how we eat them. From the darkest greens such as spring greens to the lightest iceberg lettuce (little nutrient value but great for diluting any stronger taste you dislike) – all our edible greens are ready to serve us. The green colour comes from the chlorophyll which is the pigment found in the green plants (it’s our primordial nutrient that sustains life). At the centre of the chlorophyll you’ll find the mineral magnesium so therefore, no magnesium no life, that is how important magnesium is. Chlorophyll may support the prevention of various cancers as well as supporting healing, digestive health and detoxification of toxins such as heavy metals. However, over cooking our greens depletes the chlorophyll – remember those watery veg that looked grey and unappealing – that’s green veg that’s had its health giving pigment stripped! Greening up our diet couldn’t be simpler with all the new kitchen gadgets like blenders and smoothie makers, spiralizers, juicers, mandolins or even the old fashioned food grater that can grate things down so fine you can literally sneak some greens into foods. Why are eating our greens so good? Apart from the chlorophyll there are so many other reasons too… 1. Excellent source of calcium and magnesium to support healthy bones, energy production and more. 2. High in fibre – keeps you feeling fuller for longer, supports bowel regularity as well as cholesterol and blood sugar levels. 3. Leafy greens contain Vitamin K which

38

www.espmag.co.uk

supports normal blood clotting, bone health and prevents cell damage (n.b. if you’re on any blood thinning drugs you need to discuss this with your GP). 4. Leafy greens are highly alkaline which helps to support acid/alkaline balance. Today most of what we are putting in our system and that which surrounds us is acidic, so we need to increase our alkaline reserves through our plant foods, especially greens. 5. High in beta-carotene (think of the fallen leaves in the autumn that are yellow/orange) which supports eye health, cellular protection and much more. 6. Greens are high in folate which is needed for cardiovascular health, red blood cell production and skin cell production. 7. Also high in Vitamin C, greens can help with wound healing, aiding iron absorption, cell protection, help collagen production and liver detoxification to name a few. 8. Green plant foods (as well as other veggies) contain natural high levels of water helping us to keep hydrated. So, how do we get them into our diet? Many people use liquid, capsules or tablet supplements but this shouldn’t be instead of actually eating more greens. Depending on the individual, some struggle with raw veggies if there is gut inflammation, so slightly steaming, juicing or enjoying them in soups and smoothies can help. Otherwise enjoying some of our green veggies raw gives us the life giving enzymes from the plant. Here are just a few ways to ‘green up’… 1. Green smoothies – adding some leafy greens, cucumber or avocado to a little fruit (not too much fruit) can introduce a good concentrated dose each day.

3. Soften leafy greens (or sweat them) and serve poached eggs over the top for breakfast. 4. Use the ever popular spiralizer to make veggie spaghetti as a base for chicken, or other meat dishes or even mixed into a salad. I like mine with tasty tomato sauce over the top, olives and a sprinkle of goats cheese for a taste of Italian style veggies. 5. Use little gem lettuces as cracker style boats, you can add a little cheese with red onion, mustard etc and take this as a snack or even lunch. It’s really filling but not clogging. 6. Sweat down greens and mix up into scrambled eggs or as a frittata. 7. Simply steam broccoli or other veg, add a little tomato sauce and a sprinkle of goats cheese to enjoy. If you add some small flavouring on top this way you might find you get to start enjoying the greens without it. 8. Juicing – one of my favourite ways to top up my greens! It’s easy to add in some cucumber, leafy greens such as spinach, romaine lettuce with a little green apple and/or lemon and enjoy as part of your diet. Eating raw veggies keeps the enzymes so therefore eating some raw salad before a meal or enjoying it in a smoothie or juice or making imaginative salads with our kitchen gadgets will go a long way to support health. Adding tasty salad dressing will allow you to enjoy a large green leafy salad for sure. Ask yourself each day – what shall I eat with my greens today? In health, Karen

Wonderwall

This month ESP’s Darren Grigas turns Spiderman and takes the kids to try out the climbing tower… We started on the easiest route which very slightly leans away from you with plenty of holds to use, me and the kids all reached the top of this first wall with relative ease. From the top you then just have to lean back and let go of the wall (when prompted) and casually abseil back down.

One of my earliest memories is of me and my brother Rich climbing on our bedroom furniture and at the overconfident age of 3 or 4 I got stuck on top of the wardrobe. When asked by my parents how I got up there I told them in a sobbing voice "I fell up here." They had to leave the room to secretly laugh it off before coming back to help me down. Despite this rocky start I've always loved climbing anything I can and it’s the same now with my own kids Ethan and Oonagh-Mae. Like me they love a climbing challenge so we were very excited to test our nerve on the brilliant 15 metre climbing tower at Tallington Lakes. From the foot of the tower looking up it's a daunting but inviting structure, the four sides vary in difficulty getting progressively more challenging as your confidence grows and abilities improve. On each side of the tower the amount of holds become more sparse and the angles of the walls along with overhangs and protrusions become more challenging.

Once we'd nailed the first wall we each tried the more difficult sides working up to the hardest wall facing an overhang when you're already about 7m up, at this point you realise it's not as easy as it looks from the ground. There are a select few holds to choose from and those you can reach don't offer much for you to grip easily. Once you're leaning back on yourself your bodyweight seems to double and you realise how tired your arms are getting whilst you balance on tip toes and pinch a small hold between your fingers. There’s certainly enough to challenge climbers of varied strength and ability. From the top of the tower you can see across lots of Tallington Lakes; the dry ski slopes and Pro Shop neighbouring the tower, holiday homes, lakes and woodland off into the distance showing just how big the place is. We didn't quite complete the toughest side of the tower so will have to go back for another go and get that job done.

Photos: Emma Bothamley

My eager spiderkids were raring to go but as I was the biggest kid I got to go first, (that's fair right?). We put on our harnesses and helmets and an instructor checked we were strapped in and hooked up so she could ‘belay’ us up and down. A rope runs from the instructor up to the fixture at the top of the tower and back down to you at the other end. Belaying means feeding the rope through as you ascend so it's always tight, therefore if you were to slip you'd only ever fall a few centimetres at most. You can also belay each other if confident enough which means larger groups getting up and down more quickly and practising skills at both ends of the rope.

THE POSH PAGE ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United… I am writing this column in the last few days of June and it seems mad to be saying it, but the fixtures for the new EPL Sky Bet League One season (that is a bit of a mouthful) have been released and for the third successive season, Peterborough United get a trip to Spotland to face Rochdale on the opening day. “It’s vital that the players get the fitness into their legs at this point...” Gillingham did bring a smile to my face.

Photo: theposh.com

Of course, Northampton Town and MK Dons provide a bit of local interest this season and the clash with the Cobblers (both home and away) are both before December. You can view a full fixture list at the club’s website, www.theposh.com and in the next few weeks, you’ll be able to obtain a handy fixture card for your wallet from the Club Shop.

The fixture computer has a random element to it but there has to be a glitch somewhere to send us to the same location three years in a row, however, as the old saying goes, you have to face everyone twice at some point in the campaign.

I am like most supporters, my eyes headed for the opening day fixture, the final day fixture and the Christmas and New Year matches. It’s always nice to be able to spend the festive period as close to home as possible so a Boxing Day home clash with

The players spent the last few days of June and the first few days of July in Portugal as they were put through their paces by new Head of Sports Science Ben Mackenzie. The first few weeks of pre-season are always brutal. I’ve seen players throw up (no names mentioned), I’ve seen players struggle so badly they were beaten in a race by the then manager and I’ve been tied up by a whole squad (that is a story for another column).

It’s vital that the players get the fitness into their legs at this point ahead of the first pre-season friendly which takes place on Saturday August 9 at Boston United. We have home friendly games to look forward to against Norwich City, West Ham United XI, Barnsley and Leeds United so check out www.theposh.com for ticket prices. Away from the ABAX, myself and a few work colleagues spent seven days in France with thousands of England fans and I know there were some awful scenes across the tournament, but I can thankfully say, we witnessed no trouble whatsoever. Both England fans and supporters of other countries were mingling and singing together throughout the three cities we visited and hopefully that will continue until the conclusion of the competition. Enjoy the rest of the summer! Phil Adlam

The team at ESP Magazine love to find any excuse to have cake in the office. This month’s reason was the fact that we were celebrating local band Children of the Revolution reaching their 10th year of gigging in Peterborough and beyond. Mikey Clarke grabbed a word…

Photos: Olivia Johnston Photography

As a fan of the local music scene, I’ve witnessed a lot of bands come and go – with some only lasting a few months. Rob explained that the secret to lasting so long is, “Always have fun! I feel very lucky to do what I do. I don’t want it to ever feel like a normal job because it’s not. That high energy you see on stage is for real – I love it.”

Children of the Revolution are one of our favourite bands to catch on the local circuit and are made up of Tom Clarke (bass guitar), Kevin Bull Jnr (lead guitar), Dave Smith (drums and backing vocals) and Rob Bull (lead vocals/bass guitar). I recently caught up with Rob to discuss the band and the last 10 years. He told me, “We’re mostly a function band these days – playing a lot of weddings and parties, but also a lot of local venues. We play with a lot of energy. By the end of a gig we’re very sweaty and very tired, but we love it. We like to think people walk away from our gigs having had a great night of singing and dancing. We play a lot of popular songs that people know but try to put our own spin on them.” To clarify, Children of the Revolution have been performing professionally in the Peterborough music scene in pubs and clubs for 10 years, but they’ve actually been a band for much longer. Rob told me, “We started playing 15 years ago for friends and people our friends knew. I never expected that it would one day be a full-time thing – my livelihood. I couldn’t be happier that it’s worked out that way. The time has gone so quick. In fact, the only reason I realised we’d been playing professionally for 10 years is because we recently played at the Prince of Wales Pub in Castor for their 10th year anniversary, and I knew that we were one of the first bands to perform there.”

46

www.espmag.co.uk

Having been on the scene for such a long time, they’ve played a lot of different venues. I wondered if Rob had a favourite. “It’s hard to say. We’re playing at a lot of the same venues now that we played in when we first started out. The people of Castor have always been extremely kind to us from day one. I’d also have to say the Summer Sundays at Charters and the Willow Festival are definitely right up there as favourites.” And what about a favourite moment in general? “There’s a few. For example I couldn’t be happier with the band’s popularity and following. We have some great fans,” he said. “A moment that stands out for me is the fact that in 60 years of New Year’s Eve parties in Blackpool, we were the only band to be booked in for a second year in a row. There were thousands of people – none of which knew us, and yet they all responded to us like they’d known us for years. At that moment I knew we were doing something right. If you were to ask the other guys, they’d probably tell you that their highlight was playing the opening night on the outside stage at the return of the Willow Festival four years ago. We reminisce about that particular gig a lot.” It seems like Rob and the band aren’t leaving the music scene any time soon. Where do they hope to be in another 10 years time? “We’re at full capacity with our gigs and can’t squeeze in any more. Hopefully that will continue. Also, let me tell you about a dream of mine. I really want the band to perform in Vegas – even if only for a few nights. From being a school band to playing there would

be amazing. I’ve been there a lot and made a few contacts so hopefully it will happen.” At this point I offered my services to report on their Vegas adventures – because I’m a dedicated pro. This may not be the first time you’ve read about Rob in ESP Magazine. In fact, he and Dave (drums and backing vocals) were both in a band called ACER and were one of the very first bands ESP interviewed when starting out. Rob remembers that moment. “I don’t remember what was said but I remember feeling excited about chatting to this local magazine. Nothing else like that was around locally at the time. I’ve been a fan of ESP ever since and often see the mag at the venues we play at so I’ll give it a read.” Finally, I asked Rob if there were any final thoughts he’d like to share before we went our separate ways. He said, “I’d like to thank the fans. When we first started out I thought we may get a few supporting us, so to have a large number of people stand by us since day one is incredible. I hope they continue to see us for many more years to come.” You can see Children of the Revolution in action this month just check out ESP’s Gig Guide in the magazine or visit the band’s website www.childrenoftherev.com

GREEN MEADOWS FESTIVAL IS COMING!

Summer means music festivals and for the fifth year we have a great local one to look forward to! have our most enjoyable shows. We heard great things about the huge igloo stage and have already started working on a few things to make sure our show is special."

Green Meadows Festival is a gathering of friends and family in the beautiful countryside of Elton Hall Estate near Peterborough. It’s coming up on August 12 to 14 and boasts a huge line up of internationally acclaimed artists and DJs across multiple stages. These include Britpop icons Space, BBC Radio’s Craig Charles, dance royalty Utah Saints, chap hop hero Mr.B The Gentleman Rhymer, A.Skillz, local legends Shades of Rhythm and many, many more! Utah Saints tell us they’re looking forward to it – "We're really happy to be playing at a festival such as Green Meadows. It’s at festivals like this, where everyone puts their heart and soul into putting on the event that we

Green Meadows has always prided itself on having strong ties with the local area. Whether it’s through raising funds for Teenage Cancer Trust’s Addenbrookes ward or offering support to local artists and performers. This year they’ve gone even further by teaming up with BBC Introducing Cambridgeshire for a stage takeover set to feature the best up and coming acts our region has to offer including The Rose Affair, The Candle Thieves, Melody Causton and more. BBC Radio Cambs will also be broadcasting live from the site.

BBC Radio Cambridgeshire presenter Nick Carter can’t wait to get involved –

"We're really excited to take our radio show to the Green Meadows Festival this summer. We'll be bringing some excellent local musicians with us too. It's great to support a festival, with a real community feel, and to be able to share it with the rest of Cambridgeshire." Alongside the musical entertainment there’ll be plenty more to see and do with a full itinerary of free children’s activities, handpicked food vendors and crafts stalls. The fun doesn’t stop there either, Saturday will be the fancy dress day. And with this year’s theme Enchanted Woods & Magical Creatures, it’s time to dust of those fairy wings, elfin bows, foxes tails, maybe even that panto horse Pegasus?

WOOFSTOCK IS BACK!

Once again it’s packed with all kinds of live music to suit eveyrone from the Rocket Dogs to Scumbus, The Wayfarers to Royal Monster, The Palmerston Ukulele Band through to Gone to the Dogs and many more. Plus there’ll be a large range of ales and ciders to keep you merry! It’s free entry but please do donate to the cause and for the full line-up take a look at www.woofstock.co.uk.

Nick and Diane over at the Angel Inn at Yarwell know how to throw a party and I’m pleased to see their great charity festival, the wonderfully named Woofstock, is back once again on the weekend of Saturday July 30 and Sunday July 31. It’s the eighth year they’ve run this lively event in aid of the Retired Greyhounds Trust – so far they’ve collectively raised over £14.5k for the Trust – and this one promises to be just as good as previous Woofstock festivals.

Elton Hall is a new venue for the guys behind it and festival founder Ollie Sharp says it’s really opened up the event – "Moving to a beautiful new site at Elton Hall and extending to three full days (and nights) we have the opportunity to bring more music and culture to the area, not only with big name acts but also continuing to support local artists. It's going to be our best year yet. We have so many exciting things planned for the new site!" Green Meadows 2016 is set to be a fantastic three days! Check the website for the full line up, more information and tickets www.greenmeadowsfestival.org.

ANDY WARRINGTON EXPERIENCE CHARITY GIG A charity gig at Deeping Sports & Social Club on Friday July 29 gives you a good chance to see The Andy Warrington Experience. The gig is raising funds in order to support Breast Cancer Research, and the band, which consists of Andy Warrington, vocals and guitar, Phil Cox guitar, Rick Welsh on bass and Argentinian Carlos Parlato on drums, are promising a great evening of classic rock including material from The Stones to Springsteen and David Bowie to Joy Division . The Andy Warrington Experience always entertain and you can get your tickets from the bar at the Deeping Sports & Social Club on Outgang Road.

TRIBUTE STARS @ SAUSAGE AND CIDER FESTIVAL The beautiful setting of Elton Hall just off the A605 is a tempting venue to spend the weekend of July 29 to 31. This is where the Peterborough Sausage and Cider Music Festival 2016 is due to take place. It’s a weekend aimed at the whole family with free children’s entertainment craft and arts stalls and a funfair. We have a pair of tickets up for grabs to see Canadian rocker Bryan Adams at his concert on the Embankment on Friday August 5. The legendary star is heading to Peterborough as part of his Get Up tour and will take to the stage to perform tracks from his latest album, Get Up, as well as some of his greatest hits. Bryan released his latest studio album Get Up in October to much acclaim. It was produced by famed ELO frontman Jeff Lynne and features nine new songs and four acoustic versions, highlighting Adams’ unique voice and depth.

PARTY AT THE WHARF WITH THE BEAT

Some of the original members have revived the band and have announced the release of new studio album Bounce this September. This month sees the release of the first single from that album, called Walking on the Wrong Side.

The very popular Oundle Festival returns from July 8 to 16 but I’m concentrating on a gig on Saturday July 9 which will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the Festival and which will certainly pull in one of the largest crowds – The Party at The Wharf. It features The Beat and Tin Pigeons – two contrasting styles of music. The Beat were of course famous at the

They’re joined by The Tin Pigeons. The band hail from Rutland and have earned rave reviews at the Peterborough Beer Festival and many other local and nationwide appearances with their own brand of very popular indie folk. Their new single, Sparks was recently featured on the BBC Radio 1 playlist. The venue is in Station Road and gates will open at 5pm for what the organisers claim is going to be Oundle’s ‘Party of the Year’. There’s a bar well stocked with local Nene Valley Brewery beers and a variety of food stalls. Alternatively you can take your own picnic to the Party. Tickets are available from the Box Office of Oundle Music Trust on 01832 274734.

start of the eighties with their 2tone songs fusing ska, pop, soul, reggae and punk rock. Big hits with songs like Mirror in the Bathroom, Hands Off She’s Mine and Can't Get Used To Losing You earned them a massive reputation here and in America before their split in the mideighties.

Read our ESP interview with Bryan in the next issue who says – “I’m delighted to be back on the road. It will give me an opportunity to perform tracks from my latest album, Get Up, as well as some of my earlier classics. It’s going to be a special show, performing outdoors in Peterborough and I hope my fans can join me.” Tickets are priced from £49, and are available to buy online at www.ticketline.co.uk or by phone 0844 888 9991.
